‘An absolute privilege’: equestrians recognised for ‘extraordinary contributions’ by The King

Members of the equestrian community who have gone above and beyond in their sectors have been recognised in the The King’s Birthday Honours list.

A riding school yard manager, Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) volunteers and a top jockey are among those named in the honours, which “mark the extraordinary contributions and service of people across the UK”.

Tower Farm Riding School yard manager Debbie Henderson was appointed MBE for services to equestrianism and the community of Edinburgh and the south of Scotland.

Debbie grew up riding at Tower Farm, Edinburgh, then went to work at the Royal Mews in London as a groom. She returned to work at Tower Farm in 1987 and has been there since, teaching generations to ride.

Debbie and Tower Farm are involved in a variety of parades, including the People’s Procession, the Edinburgh Riding of the Marches and the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, providing horses for the Army and members of the royal family to ride.

Debbie, who was nominated by the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, told H&H the MBE “is something you never expect”.

“I had no idea I’d been put forward,” she said. “Horses are such nice characters and I just enjoy helping people to enjoy them. From the little four-year-olds coming for their weekly fix to teaching the Lord Provost, to see them all enjoying it, it’s been amazing.”

RDA volunteer Doug Smith and South Bucks RDA group chair Di Redfern were appointed MBEs for services to disabled riders.

Doug is a former mounted police officer but his career was cut short by a double spinal fracture in 1995. He has since dedicated more than 35 years to the RDA; playing “a key role in shaping” the charity’s national championships, contributing to national steering groups and championing equine welfare.

“To receive this award for doing something I love, and that is also so worthwhile, is an absolute privilege,” said Doug, who is also a big supporter of para equestrian sport.

“RDA was my salvation after my accident, and I have found great purpose in giving back, sharing what is possible and helping others discover what they can achieve.”

Di has volunteered with the RDA since the 1960s. She has made a “lasting contribution” to the South Bucks group and wider RDA movement alongside significant contribution to the development of para equestrian sport. Her work has focused on ensuring disabled people can access the “highest quality coaching and support, carefully tailored to their individual needs”.

“I am honoured to receive an MBE and would like to thank everyone associated with South Bucks RDA and RDA UK. The work we do is a true team effort,” she said.

RDA UK chief executive Michael Bishop said the charity is delighted to see the “outstanding” recognitions and that Doug and Di’s commitment to the RDA has made a “lasting difference to disabled people”.

“We offer our warmest congratulations,” he said.

Ryan Moore appointed MBE in The King’s Birthday Honours list

Three-time British champion Flat jockey Ryan Moore was appointed MBE for services to racing and British sport. Trainer Aidan O’Brien told At The Races “nobody deserves it more”.

“It’s very special. I’m delighted for him and all his family,” said Aidan.

Lanwades Stud owner Kirsten Rausing, founder of the Alborada Trust that funds medical and veterinary causes, was appointed CBE for services to charity, animal welfare, horseracing and bloodstock. Former Downpatrick racecourse manager Richard Lyttle was appointed MBE for services to the racing industry and Angela Tattersall of St John Ambulance, who has worked at York racecourse for almost 50 years, was appointed MBE for her services to the charity.

Medal-winning rider back in the saddle after second child – on a mechanical horse, as she considers her future in the sport

Multiple para dressage gold medallist Natasha Baker has been back in the saddle for the first time since she had her second son – on a mechanical horse, as she considers her future in the sport.

Natasha and her husband Marc Jaconelli welcomed their son Oliver last June, a brother to then two-year-old Joshua, less than a year after she won bronze at the Paris Paralympics with Keystone Dawn Chorus (Lottie).

Natasha had not ridden for 16 months, as Lottie was sold to Irish rider Katie Reilly, until she went back to the South Bucks Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) branch, where she started riding aged nine, for a session on “Mickey”.

“Returning to riding has been very different after Oliver’s birth to how it was after my first pregnancy,” said Natasha. “That time I had Lottie waiting at home and the Paris Paralympics on my radar. This time I don’t and I haven’t ridden since November 2024.”

Natasha said a return to her sport will mean finding a new horse, which is always hard, adding: “Also, my mum wants to take more of a back seat now and enjoy being a nan rather than a full-time groom, so management at home will have to look a bit different.

“Riding and competing has been my entire life for 26 years – I don’t know what my life looks like without it. I know coming back will be a challenge, juggling it with two small children, so I need to ask myself the difficult questions and try to work out how and if I can make it work. What I do know is I need to get back on a horse to help me figure it all out.”

Next steps

Natasha said she enjoyed her first session on Mickey, with coach Lizzie Ragg. She plans to ride him this spring, then hopes to move on to real horses while she “decides her next steps”.

RDA chief executive Michael Bishop said: “RDA is very proud of our long connection with Natasha and all the equestrian Paralympians who began their journey with us.

“Across the UK, nearly 450 local RDA groups provide inclusive opportunities for 39,000 disabled people to take part in equine activities that improve health and wellbeing, build skills and confidence, and open pathways to elite sport. Natasha is a shining example of this.

“We are delighted she is returning to South Bucks RDA and getting back in the saddle on Mickey, with the expert support of Lizzie Ragg.”

‘The absolute best of grassroots sport’: horsewoman who changes lives wins Sunday Times award

The founder of Park Lane Stables Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) group has been named Sunday Times grassroots sportswoman of the year, in recognition of her work that “exemplifies the absolute best of grassroots sport”.

Natalie O’Rourke, who has been running the RDA centre in Teddington, London, for over 15 years, won the title at the Sunday Times sportswomen of the year awards ceremony in London last night (4 February).

“I’m totally overwhelmed to have won,” said Natalie. “The other nominees are incredible women carrying out amazing roles in their communities. This award is really for my team and for all the women within RDA who show up every day for others. I’m so grateful my dad could be with me; he was the first to put me on a pony and has supported my passion for horses my whole life.”

Natalie said the Park Lane RDA sessions are not just about learning skills.

“They’re about creating moments of connection and confidence, and a bit of pony magic that changes lives,” she said. “Huge thanks to everyone who voted for me, and special thanks to those who believed in me from day one and continue to support me.”

Park Lane Stables faced losing its home in 2021 but thanks to a large-scale campaign, managed to raise over £1m to protect its future for the local community.

“Natalie’s achievement is thoroughly deserved and a credit to her leadership at Park Lane Stables RDA,” said RDA chief executive Michael Bishop.

“Her work exemplifies the absolute best of grassroots sport – high-quality, inclusive delivery rooted in safe, supportive community environments where the human–horse connection helps people build confidence, independence and social connection.

“This Sunday Times grassroots sportswoman of the year award recognises not only Natalie’s dedication, but the real difference she, her team and nearly 14,000 RDA volunteers make to the lives of disabled people and their families.

“Across the UK, RDA supports 39,000 disabled people every year, and this recognition highlights how national impact is driven by skilled grassroots leaders, like Natalie, who bring our mission to life in local communities every day.”

Sunday Times editor Ben Taylor said 2025 had been a “thrilling” year for women’s sport.

“Natalie O’Rourke is a worthy winner of our grassroots sportswoman of the year award,” he said. “She founded Park Lane Stables, a riding school for disabled children in Teddington, and through it is changing young lives for the better.”

New study confirms – and champions – the life-changing power of horses

A major report into the “life-changing” impact of the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) on thousands of people not only demonstrates the charity’s worth but “champions the role of the horse in society”.

The research, published this week, found that between 80% and 90% of participants have improved physical wellbeing and confidence, and feel more socially connected thanks to the RDA. More than 70% have improved mental wellbeing and almost two thirds are more settled.

Charity CEO Michael Bishop told H&H that he, and many of the RDA team, have wanted to carry out the research since his appointment last year.

“It has two real purposes,” he said. “The first is that RDA is brilliantly humble. And humble for me, has two meanings. One is that great compliment of a pragmatism of making it happen, getting on and quietly achieving remarkable things. But the risk of being brilliantly humble is that you can be quiet and lack self-confidence.

“I really wanted to understand the impact we created, and to be able to shout about it.”

Mr Bishop said there were statistics on how many people the charity reached, but these did not “articulate clearly how transformational that is”.

“So there was an RDA angle, to champion our cause, do all the things that sustain it,” he said. “The second purpose is about the social relevance of horses and that connection with society. It’s not enough to say, ‘This works, it’s great and we reach 39,000 people a year.’ We’ve got to be able to articulate how we reach them and why that’s relevant to their lives.

“I’m delighted this report really sets out how this impacts people in education or struggling with a connection to the education system. This articulates their connection to health and wellbeing through activity, and fleshes out an argument on behalf of the horse.”

Mr Bishop has previously said that horses’ social relevance is key to equestrianism thriving in future; the more people are involved with them, who feel they are relevant, the more advocates there are.

“We’ve got to be able to champion the role of the horse, and that means aligning what the horse achieves to things the rest of society would recognise,” he said.

The work was carried out by independent researchers, who analysed existing data and spoke to 1,200 representative participants.

Mr Bishop said one key statistic is that although the national percentage of people with disabilities who rate life satisfaction “very high” is only 5%, for those engaged with the RDA, it is 32%.

“That’s massive,” he said. That feels like a huge change we’re creating in those lives. And that typifies that depth of impact. The report found 80% of changes to lives quoted happen because of RDA activity, connection to horses provided by our groups.”

H&H reported on the British Equestrian research that found the social value of equestrianism is £1.2bn annually, which could help the industry thrive as others see its impact.

“That’s about the audiences you want to reach,” Mr Bishop said. “I don’t need to convince [riders] that time with the horse is really powerful, or probably that our volunteers have a remarkable ability to make that relationship come alive, but I do need to reach audiences who can support our work. And the horse, the whole sector on behalf of the horse, has to be able to reach those audiences for our survival.

“For both purposes, the numbers matter. And whether you’re a numbers or an emotive story person, you’ve got to have both.

“We’re not proud enough as an industry, perhaps, of the remarkable change we can create in society through horses. We need to articulate it better.”

Mr Bishop hopes the report will show people, health and education providers the good RDA does, and encourage others to support the work, whether by volunteering, donating – or just sharing the story, for their own benefit as well.

“The future of horses in sport depends on social relevance,” he said. “Last year, we didn’t have the evidence to back it up, but now through research, we know the social importance of horse sport to society is the strongest driver of trust for the UK public. The greater the perception of the social value of horses, the more likely they are to trust and accept them. I rest my case.”

RDA president the Princess Royal added: “This report celebrates the incredible work of every RDA community and gives voice to those at the heart of our organisation – our participants, their families, and carers. It shows the vital role RDA plays in creating opportunities that might otherwise remain out of reach.”

At-risk riding centre given six-month lifeline as its future ‘relies on local leadership and support’

A centre that has been “a special place where disabled children and adults have found freedom, happiness and confidence” will keep its doors open for at least another six months – but its “future depends on local leadership and support”.

Earlier this month H&H reported the Riding for the Disabled Association’s (RDA) Unicorn Centre, Middlesbrough, was at risk of closure owing to “growing financial pressures”. The centre’s trustees said that following “the outpouring of support” received, avenues were being explored to save the facility.

In an update yesterday (20 October) the trustees confirmed that with support from RDA UK, the centre will remain open for “at least another six months”.

“We want to thank everyone connected with the centre for your patience, kindness and amazing support during this challenging time,” read the statement.

“For more than 25 years, the RDA Unicorn Centre has been a special place where disabled children and adults have found freedom, happiness and confidence through the power of horses. However our running costs have risen sharply. Feed, bedding, vet care, insurance and energy bills are all much higher, making it harder to keep the centre and our horses in good shape. Even so, our commitment to our riders and our work remains strong.”

The statement added that the six months will give the centre “time to build a clear, sustainable plan for the future – one that helps the centre grow and thrive.”

“The Unicorn Centre’s future depends on local leadership and community support. We are asking individuals, businesses and supporters to come forward and help us,” it said.

“We’re forming a project board and are especially looking for people with skills in business, finance, fundraising or strategy. We also urgently need donations to help keep the centre open while we plan for the future.”

RDA UK chief executive Michael Bishop said the Unicorn Centre has “long been a vital and influential part of the RDA community, providing life-changing opportunities for disabled people and their families”.

“Its impact over nearly three decades is a direct result of the dedication and leadership shown by local trustees, staff, volunteers and supporters. While the scale and importance of the centre compel RDA UK to act, our national team’s role is to provide short-term stability, not long-term management,” he said.

“The centre’s future must be led and secured by the local community. We can only create a sustainable future if new trustees, volunteers and donors step forward now to build on this proud legacy and ensure the Unicorn Centre continues its vital work for generations to come.”

Mr Bishop added that “now more than ever, we need people with business experience to join as trustees including forming a short-term project board, volunteers with time to give, and donors who can contribute financially”.

“Our role is to steady the ship, but its long-term direction must come from the community it serves,” he said.

“The future of the Unicorn Centre, and the health and wellbeing of those who rely on it, will only be secured through local commitment, leadership, and collective effort.”

An RDA UK spokesperson added that the immediate support from RDA UK is ensuring continuity of sessions for participants and volunteers while work continues to appoint a permanent operations manager, recruit additional trustees and “develop a long-term recovery plan”.

“RDA UK is grateful to the local trustees who have remained during this difficult time, acknowledging their dedication and the many volunteer hours given to help keep the centre going. RDA UK also thanks FRP Advisory for their vital assistance during this process,” he said.

Much-loved RDA centre at risk of closure after 27 years as ‘rescue proposals’ being explored

“Potential rescue proposals” are being explored in an attempt to save a long-standing Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) centre.

On 1 October the trustees of the RDA Unicorn Centre in Middlesbrough announced the “incredibly difficult decision” that the centre would be closing, owing to “growing financial pressures”.

The RDA Unicorn Centre was established in 1998 and offers activities including riding, equine therapy and volunteering for young people and adults with additional needs. The centre is not linked to the Unicorn Equestrian Centre, a registered charity in Stow-on-the-Wold, Gloucestershire.

In an update on Friday (10 October) the trustees of the RDA Unicorn Centre said that following the “outpouring of support” received following the closure announcement, avenues are being explored to save the facility.

“The announcement has inspired new potential rescue proposals which we are exploring. With the support of FRP Advisory, the remaining trustees, alongside the staff, volunteers and local supporters, continue to explore turnaround options to keep the centre open,” read the statement.

“If the centre is to survive, it needs an immediate injection of funding. The centre has relaunched its Facebook page and restored the donation button to the Just Giving page.”

The statement said further announcements will be made “as the situation develops”.

“This has been a very challenging time for all involved with the centre and we thank everyone for their support and patience”.

RDA UK chief executive Michael Bishop told H&H the charity is “deeply concerned” about the challenges facing the centre.

“We recognise the significant impact its potential closure would have on the local community and the disabled people it supports. The RDA Unicorn Centre, like many charities and commercial centres operating in the equine sector, is facing increasingly tough financial and operational conditions, and this situation is sadly not unique,” he said.

“We are working closely with the trustees of the Unicorn Centre, and other local interested parties, to explore all possible options to safeguard its future. While we are not in a position to share further detail at this stage, our focus is on finding a sustainable way forward.

“The future of centres like the Unicorn is vital to ensure that RDA can continue to deliver the life-changing benefits of therapeutic riding, driving and equestrian activity to disabled people across the UK.”

‘She touched so many people’s hearts’: farewell to RDA pony who brought joy to others for more than 20 years

Tributes have been paid to a much-loved Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) pony who “touched so many people’s hearts”, after her death aged 27.

Fudge, a 13.2hh skewbald mare, joined The Diamond Centre as a green six-year-old in 2004.

Claire Pickergill, who was head groom at the time, remembers going to view Fudge, and said: “She was handed to me with a knot holding the bridle together. The yard manager and I glanced at each other in disbelief and I said something like, ‘Well I assume that means she’s pretty safe!’ I got on and knew straight away she’d be a super little pony for the Diamond.”

She was right, and Fudge served faithfully for nearly 21 years.

The Diamond Centre manager Maz Ray told H&H: “At 27 years old, she was the centre’s longest-serving pony and a true favourite among riders and volunteers alike.

“Known for her calm, kind and laid-back nature, Fudge was a steady and reliable presence, especially valued in hippotherapy sessions and for helping nervous or first-time riders.

“She played a vital role in teaching children to ride and volunteers to lead, always offering comfort and confidence with her gentle spirit.

“Fudge also loved being part of ‘tea with a pony’ and grooming sessions, where her affectionate personality shone through.”

Maz added that Fudge was “the most gentle, sweet natured horse you could ever meet”.

“She seemed to know exactly who was on her back and adapted seamlessly to each individual rider,” she said.

“Fudge was a true superstar and enjoyed taking part in lead-rein lessons, musical rides, games and hippotherapy.

“During her 20 happy years at Diamond, Fudge patiently taught so many people not only to ride, but to groom, tack up, clip and lead. Fudge touched so many people’s hearts and we will miss her.

“Her legacy lives on in the hearts of all of her forever lifelong friends at Diamond.”

‘It’s a lifeline’: how Riding for the Disabled changed the lives of a teenager and his mother

The mother of a teenager who sustained brain damage as a child has spoken about how Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) has been a “lifeline”.

Joshua Brooks, 16, was two years old when a rare complication of chickenpox led to brain damage. After struggling with mobility and speech in his early years, Joshua felt increasingly isolated and faced challenges when socialising.

His mum, Judy, wanted to find an activity that suited his needs and granted him independence, confidence, and the ability to socialise with other young people. Joshua loves animals and so the RDA was perfect, and he started riding at West Suffolk RDA in Barrow when he was eight.

“When Joshua started riding he instantly became happier and calmer, feeling a huge sense of belonging and being part of a team,” said Judy.

“When he grew too tall to continue riding the ponies, we knew it was essential that he still attended the RDA and continued to build on the incredible relationships and confidence he found there.”

Joshua is now a valued volunteer with West Suffolk RDA and spends time at the charity each week, helping lead horses during riding lessons, tacking and untacking, and mucking out.

Judy added that as a parent of a child with special educational needs and disabilities, life can be very difficult, full of battles and often lonely.

“The West Suffolk RDA has given me a place where I see my child achieving, where he is content and empowered and where life makes sense. The RDA and horse riding aren’t just hobbies, they are a lifeline for so many and funding and volunteering are imperative to keeping the RDA operating,” she said.

RDA UK chief executive Michael Bishop said that Joshua’s story “is just one example of how connecting with horses can enrich lives”.

“The RDA is the only major charity in the UK specifically focused on the health and wellbeing benefits of connecting people with horses, even if they have never been around equines before,” he said.

“We look forward to seeing Joshua continue his remarkable volunteering journey with us.”

The RDA is Harry Hall’s charity partner for 2025 and the equestrian business has so far raised more than £5,000 for it through the partnership. Joshua has also been organising his own fundraisers, including presentations about his local RDA centre for Beaver and Cub Scouts, which have raised £130.

Harry Hall managing director Liz Hopper said: “Joshua’s experience with the RDA illustrates why we collaborate with remarkable charities each year, enabling us to support our incredible community.

“It’s incredible to witness Joshua thrive in his volunteering role, and vital funding is essential to continue supporting the RDA’s incredible services.”

Remarkable horses, extraordinary service: three equines who spent years helping people retire to their forever home

Three “remarkable” horses who have spent years transforming people’s lives have arrived at their final home to enjoy a well-earned retirement.

The Horse Trust said it was delighted to welcome Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) stars Jezz, Vella and Bill after their “extraordinary” service.

“These special horses have spent their working lives transforming the lives of people with disabilities, and we are honoured to offer them the rest, care and companionship they now so richly deserve,” a spokesperson for the charity said. “Only a limited number of RDA ponies and horses retire here each year, so we are always especially pleased when these wonderful animals come through our gates.”

Jezz, 22, is a gentle part-bred Arab with a “curious spirit”, who spent 13 years with Beechley RDA in Liverpool.

“Loved by volunteers and riders alike, she took part in therapy sessions, taught vet students equine care skills, and competed at the RDA National Championships,” the spokesperson said, adding that Jezz also helped deliver therapy sessions and took part in events at Aintree with the Jockey Club.

Vella, a 20-year-old Irish Sport Horse/cob, “brought confidence and joy to riders at Barrow Farm RDA in Essex for more than seven years”. She supported students with additional educational needs, was trained as a hoist pony for those with physical disabilities and had success in competition.

“With her gentle nature and springy trot, she was the perfect balance of calmness and challenge,” the spokesperson said. “She’s now making the most of her retirement – with a muddy roll never far off!”

Skewbald Bill, 26, spent six years with Gaddesden Place RDA in Hemel Hempstead.

“Known for his intelligence and sweet temperament, Bill was a vital part of hippotherapy sessions for children with complex needs, always patient and dependable even in emotional or challenging circumstances,” the spokesperson said. “Although now retired due to arthritis, he remains full of character and continues to bring joy to those who meet him.”

Horse Trust chief executive Jeanette Allen said the team was “incredibly proud” to welcome the three horses to their well-earned retirement.

“These exceptional horses have spent their lives supporting people with disabilities through equine-assisted therapy, and now it’s our turn to give back to them,” she said. “Every horse that joins our Home of Rest is given the highest standard of care, comfort and companionship, and we’re honoured to offer them a peaceful home for the rest of their days.”

The Horse Trust is appealing for supporters to contribute to an appeal, to allow the charity to care for more horses in need.

‘Emotional goodbye’ to elderly RDA pony who was a ‘best friend’ to many

Tributes have been paid to a long-standing Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) pony who was a “best friend” to many.

Bank Farm RDA group in Chesham said an “emotional goodbye” to beloved 23-year-old Bella, who was put down on 10 June owing to ongoing health concerns.

Bella had been with the centre for 14 years, and had been on loan to RDA volunteer Denise Voon for the last 12 months for her son who has autism.

“The RDA community has been wonderful for my 14-year-old son, and because he was getting so much from riding, we were lucky enough to loan Bella so he could do more riding outside his sessions,” Denise told H&H.

“They were a great team. He doesn’t talk an awful lot but sometimes you would hear him talking to Bella and it was just lovely. When he is riding, that’s when I or some of the other volunteers have the best conversations with him.”

Denise said everyone at the centre is heartbroken.

“She was my son’s best friend. She gave confidence to children and taught so many to ride or just to be able to interact with ponies. She was just wonderful,” said Denise.

“It was horrible that we had to make the decision, but it was the right thing. All the ponies are big parts of the family, and especially with Bella having been here so long, she was part of the furniture and now she’s not, and it’s just heartbreaking.”

Bank Farm RDA has a new pony, 14-year-old Fell gelding Hero, arriving next week and the centre is raising money to help cover his cost. Hero has been an RDA pony at Church Farm Equestrian and Pony Club Accessibility Mark Centre in Bristol.

“It sounds corny but I’m hoping Hero will sort of help heal some of the sadness. He’s going to make such an impact on our stables and we’re really looking forward to welcoming him,” said Denise.

“Finding the right RDA pony is no small task, and we’re limited as a centre as to what we can do by the number of ponies. We know it’s difficult with the cost of living and everything, but if anybody could give even just £2 it would make such a difference to what we’re trying to do. We’re really hoping people can share our JustGiving page and help us raise awareness of what we do.”

‘Thank you for giving us a future’: at-risk riding centre that changes lives saved by supporters

A riding centre that has changed lives but was facing closure has “achieved the extraordinary” – thanks to its many supporters.

H&H reported that Clwyd Special Riding Centre, north Wales, which offers riding, driving, hippotherapy and access to horses for people with additional needs and their families, was facing closure unless £365,000 could be found. The centre was then given a “vital lifeline” that allowed it to extend its fundraising deadline to this week, but it was not out of the woods at that point.

“What once seemed impossible has now become a reality, thanks to the kindness, support and hard work of so many,” a spokesperson for the centre said..

“The much-loved centre, which has provided life-changing equine therapy and activities for people with disabilities and additional needs for 43 years, launched a Crowdfunder campaign on 24 April to secure its future. Now, with a remarkable recent pledge from a local businessperson securing the reduced target of £300,000, they are delighted to confirm that the future of the centre is secure.”

Trustee Victoria Everall, daughter of centre founder Anne Sopwith said all at the school are “overwhelmed”.

“What felt impossible just a few weeks ago has become reality thanks to the kindness, belief and generosity of so many,” she said. “The support has been humbling, from single donations to major pledges, sharing our story or simply talking about Clwyd Special Riding Centre, every act of kindness has made the difference. Words will never be enough to express our gratitude to you all. We also owe huge thanks to the team behind the scenes who have helped steer this campaign with professionalism, passion and care.”

The centre has 12 equines, and hosts three Riding for the Disabled Association groups. It is also part of the British Horse Society’s Changing Lives Through Horses scheme, but rising costs means its ability to provide its services was in doubt.

Ed Reeves from Cariad Investments and Moneypenny, who helped “close the final gap in funding”, said: “As locals with deep ties to Wrexham and north Wales and a lifelong love of horses, this cause resonated strongly with us. But it’s the dedication of the staff and volunteers, and the impact they have on so many lives, that truly inspired us to act. We are delighted to give money as we recognise the time and commitment that everyone gives at the centre. That time is the most valuable, expensive and irreplaceable gift of all. So we are proud to play a small role in helping you continue this incredible mission.”

The spokesperson added, to supporters: “Thank you for giving us a future.”

RDA centre given £5,000 for new ‘unicorn’, and more partnership news

The Riding for the Disabled Association’s (RDA) Unicorn Centre has received £5,000 to put towards a new horse.

The donation was given by members of Ferrum Masonic Lodge 1848, in collaboration with Freemasons Charity Yorkshire North and East Riding and the Masonic Charitable Foundation.

The Unicorn Centre’s chair of trustees Jackie Rubin said the money will be used towards “buying another ‘unicorn’” to add to its equine team.

“Finding exactly the right horse with a suitable size, temperament and age for our participants is paramount, so we will be starting the search right away so that we can take more riders from our long waiting list,” she said.

The Ferrum Lodge is a long-standing supporter of the Unicorn Centre. In 2019, it gave money towards the venue’s mechanical horse, Blackberry, and the Conway room, where he is kept.

Martin Eggermont, assistant provincial master of Yorkshire North and East Ridings Freemasons said: “The centre is an integral part of the local community. We fully support the work they do and hope this new horse will allow its further expansion of their activities.”

A presentation will be made when a suitable “unicorn” is found.

New approach to sponsorship

The organisers behind this year’s Agria Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials – host of the European Eventing Championships – is embracing a novel approach to sponsorship for 2025.

Sponsorship packages will be available via an interactive online auction for the 2025 fixture (18 to 21 September). It will include cross-country fences, hospitality lodges, and more.

A press release from organiser Stable Events said its team came up with the idea as “a fairer way to bring a wider range of brands and businesses on board to support the event and benefit their company”.

Auction lots will be available to view from 1 March. Bidding will run from 17 to 28 March.

Stable Events managing director James Gower said: “The task of organising the horse trials, particularly with the Agria FEI Eventing European Championship element of it, is vast.

“We want it to be as fair as possible and there may be businesses in Europe who we don’t know but who want to be involved. We are excited to be bringing this initiative to the equestrian world and to increase the chances of reaching a wider market to give them the opportunity to be part of this iconic event.

“We hope this is something that other events are able to adopt in the future to enhance the sponsorship opportunities and ultimately, the visitor experience.”

Five-figure sum to support menopause research

Online gambling operator Kindred Group has furthered its support of Women in Racing’s “Racing Home” initiative with a £50,000 investment towards menopause research.

The Racing Home project, which started in 2019, aims to make meaningful changes to the lives of working parents in the racing industry.

The menopause study involves working with those in the industry to gauge understanding of how it affects the female workforce, and what steps can be taken to support people at this stage of their life.

Dr Kate Clayton-Hathway, in affiliation with Oxford Brookes University’s business school, will create a working group this year. She will also look to work with Womenkind, Kindred’s employee network of women.

Lucy Gurney, chair of Women in Racing, said: “The Women in Racing team is proud of our partnership with Kindred and both grateful and delighted to be part of their unique approach to sport sponsorship through Racing Home. The number of working parents supported by Racing Home continues to increase its reach through its portal, grassroots ambassadors, podcasts, videos and groundbreaking post-pregnancy rehabilitation and support programme.”

She added: “Kindred’s generous support alongside the Racing Foundation, has enabled us to continue to make an impact in supporting parents and women of all ages. The impact of menopause now needs addressing in the racing industry and with Kindred’s funding, we can produce research that will meaningfully start the conversation.”

Kindred Group has now given a total of £100,000 to Racing Home since the project started in 2019.

Lycetts renews long-standing sponsorship

Insurance broker Lycetts has renewed its sponsorship of the Grantham Cup at the Eventing Spring Carnival at Thoresby International (27 to 30 March).

The Lycetts Grantham Cup is the feature CCI4*-S section at the fixture, and has been sponsored by the firm since 2013. The broker will also present a £1,000 prize to the highest-ranked Lycetts-insured rider.

Zoe Wood, equine insurance divisional director at Lycetts, said: “We are delighted to continue our support of the Grantham Cup, an event that has become an essential stepping stone for elite riders ahead of the international five-star season.

“The introduction of our exclusive £1,000 prize last year was a great success, and we look forward to once again rewarding the highest-placed Lycetts-insured rider.”

Last year, Lycetts’ additional support of the equestrian community included donating £15,630 to the British Eventing Support Trust, as part of the Benefact Group’s Movement for Good awards.

Red Horse Products pledges commitment to charity

UK-based manufacturer Red Horse Products Ltd has committed to support equine charity HorseWorld in 2025.

Red Horse Productions made an initial £500 donation and will give 20p for every website order to the Bristol charity. It is also giving HorseWorld hoof care, skincare and wound support products, and there are a number of fundraising initiatives planned for the year.

HorseWorld chief executive Jo Coombs said: “Partnerships like this are absolutely essential to our work, especially today.

“The cost-of-living crisis has meant we’ve seen a massive increase in the number of horses in need and in the cost of providing those horses with the expert care they need, so this support from Red Horse Products is going to make a huge difference and will directly impact the lives of the horses and donkeys who need us most. We are so grateful to Louise and the whole team and look forward to working with them this year.”

Red Horse Products has also donated £250 and a supply of products to both Munchkins Miniature Shetland Rescue and Hampshire Spirit Horse Rescue.

‘It was his time’: sad farewell to 30-year-old pony who brought joy to so many

Tributes have been paid to a “cherished” pony who “touched the lives of many” during his 20 years with the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA), who has died aged 30.

Rupert, who retired to the Horse Trust in 2023, had spent two decades at the RDA’s Elisabeth Curtis Centre helping riders of all abilities gain “confidence, skills, and joy”.

“His gentle nature made him a source of comfort through difficult times, and his playful personality ensured there was always laughter in the yard,” said a Horse Trust spokesperson.

“Rupert was a firm favourite at the centre, known not just for his steadfast work ethic but also for his ability to entertain; he had a way of making every moment memorable.”

In 2016 Rupert was honoured with a special award at the Elisabeth Curtis Centre’s 40th anniversary party, in “testament to his years of dedication”.

He retired after “one final ride with dear friends”, and settled “beautifully”.

“Though his time with us was short, Rupert made a lasting impact. He was a gentle soul, easy to care for, and much loved by all who knew him,” said the spokesperson.

“More recently, we shared a video of Rupert’s herd enjoying their new field. While the younger horses galloped in excitement, Rupert took one look and decided he had more important things to do, heading straight for the fresh grass instead. Ever the wise old man, he knew what he liked, and he was never one to waste energy when a good meal was waiting!”

The spokesperson added that although the charity may “never know the exact cause of his passing”, they take comfort in knowing it was “simply his time”.

“Rupert spent his final days in peace, surrounded by friends, in a place where he was truly cherished,” he said.

“Rest easy, Rupert. You will always be remembered for your kindness, your wisdom, and the joy you brought to so many.”

‘Growing recognition’ of shared responsibility for horses’ lives leads to increased funding, plus more partnership news

British racecourses have committed to more than double their regular contributions to aftercare of former racehorses.

All 59 British racecourses have agreed to increase their donations to Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) from £100, to £270 per fixture.

“The increased contributions from British racecourses to RoR is a monumental step forward for the aftercare of former racehorses. This increase reflects the racing industry’s growing recognition of the responsibility it holds to its horses, not just during their careers but for the rest of their lives,” said RoR managing director David Catlow.

“RoR is actively engaging with other major stakeholders to explore how they can also increase their contributions to aftercare. Discussions are ongoing with key partners to secure additional support. It is only through full industry-wide support that the goals outlined in RoR’s strategy can be fully realised, benefiting all former racehorses.

“While the decision to increase contributions was the result of individual decisions by each racecourse, RoR is grateful to the Racecourse Association (RCA) for its facilitation in helping secure this important boost to the welfare of retired racehorses.”

On behalf of all racecourses, RCA chief executive David Armstrong said: “We are pleased to see all 59 British racecourses come together to support the future of former racehorses.

“The aftercare of these horses is a shared responsibility within the industry, and the increased funding is a clear signal of our commitment to ensuring that every racehorse is well cared for after its racing career.

“The collaboration between racecourses and RoR is vital in maintaining the integrity of the sport and ensuring a successful transition for horses once they retire from racing.”

Boost for Riding for the Disabled Association

The Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) has been named charity of the year by Agria Blenheim Palace Horse Trials – host of the 2025 European Eventing Championships – and also by Harry Hall.

“The work that RDA does to provide transformative opportunities for individuals with disabilities through horses is truly inspiring,” said Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials event director, Katrina Midgley.

“We are proud to support their mission and look forward to raising awareness and funds for such a worthy cause during this prestigious event.”

RDA chief executive Michael Bishop said the charity is “delighted” to have been chosen by both the horse trials and Harry Hall.

“The demand for our services continues to grow. Nearly one in four of the UK population are disabled with a physical, mental health condition, or long-term illness that impacts their daily life, and despite the many benefits of physical activity and sport, disabled people still face significant barriers when trying to be active,” he said.

“RDA uses the unique connection with horses to provide riding, carriage driving, equestrian sport, equine therapy and non-ridden equine-assisted programmes that deliver life-changing impact.”

He added that RDA is “incredibly grateful” for the opportunities the partnerships will bring, to promote its mission and “raise vital funds so we can make an even greater impact”.

Harry Hall has raised more than £45,000 for equine charities and good causes over the past six years.

Harry Hall supports former thoroughbreds

Harry Hall has also joined the Howden Way Thoroughbred Aftercare Programme (TAP) as an official supporting partner.

The aftercare programme is designed to support owners and riders through every step of the way when taking on a former racehorses.

Ms Hopper said the company is “thrilled” to partner with the aftercare programme.

“The comprehensive nature of TAP, from expert coaching to welfare support, aligns perfectly with our mission to serve the equestrian community and help play a vital role in supporting riders who take on an ex-racehorse,” she said. “We look forward to supporting the programme in every way that we can to not only meet but exceed its objectives.”

Maria Haig, head of marketing and communications for The Howden Way, added: “We are delighted to be welcoming Harry Hall as a programme partner and are looking forward to working alongside them to ensure the care and future of these incredible horses that leave racing each year.

“By working collaboratively we can make an even greater lasting impact and we feel extremely fortunate to have them not only supporting the programme but also the participating riders that are taking on ex-racehorses as their horse of choice.

Agria extends sponsorship

Insurer Agria has further expanded its extensive support of equestrian sport by taking on title sponsorship of Oasby’s affiliated eventing fixtures in 2025.

There are three Agria Oasby fixtures in the British Eventing (BE) calendar – 6 to 7 March, 18 to 19 April, and 18 to 19 October.

Agria will also continue its support of the Agria Lifetime Equine BE100 league, for which competitors can collect “points” at BEDE-organised events – plus some other supporting fixtures – and which culminates at Aspen Cooling Osberton International Horse Trials (2 to 5 October).

“We are proud to be continuing our support of the Agria 100 League for a fantastic third year,” said Agria UK chief executive Vicki Wentworth.

“As horse lovers ourselves, we recognise the dedication and hard work amateur riders put into eventing, and we wish all of the partnerships taking part in the series the best of luck. We’re also delighted to be kicking off the new season as title sponsors of Agria Oasby (1), (2) and (3).”

Showing our love of horses – what we can all do to help secure equestrian sport’s future

Go back 10 years and had anyone mentioned the words “social licence” in relation to equestrianism, there would have been blank looks all round. Today, most of the industry has come or is starting to come round to the fact that this is an issue that isn’t going to go away.

So what is social licence to operate?

“Most societies regulate human activities using laws that state clearly what is, and is not, legally permissible,” Roly Owers, Madeleine Campbell and Janet Douglas state in their 2022 published study on the topic. “However, there is a second layer of permission that is granted – or revoked – by the public.”

This “second layer” is social licence, which, the authors explain, “represents an intangible, implicit agreement between the public and an industry or group”.

“The public may approve of an activity, in which case it can proceed with minimal formalised restrictions, or it may disapprove, and this may herald legal restrictions, or even an outright ban.”

If this seems an extreme or negative view, or scaremongering, think back less than two years, to the protests at the Grand National. Animal Rising, the group behind the demonstrations, wanted to highlight the “broken relationship” between humans and animals.

Protestors, people who want horse sport banned, are in the minority, but they are vocal and capable of influencing others. Three years running, World Horse Welfare has conducted research to find out what the public thinks of horse sport and the figures have stayed at roughly the same levels; about 20% do not support it in any circumstances, and another 40% would only support it if horse welfare is improved. If these 40% can be convinced that horse welfare is, as it should always be, the highest priority of all in the sport, we carry on.

So how to convince those people? How do we get more of the public on side?

Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) CEO Michael Bishop, an amateur event rider, believes horses’ social relevance is key. The more people who have horses in their lives, the more supporters equestrianism has.

“A core part of this is a societal connection with horses,” Michael told H&H. “We have to find ways of reaching out to people and engaging them with horses so they understand what we’re trying to do and how powerful that bond and relationship is.

“All of us can have a role in that, because all of us might be able to contribute something to the local RDA group, riding school, BHS centre, whatever endeavour that connects people to horses. We have a duty and responsibility, I think, to make sure there’s a social relevance connection that brings horses to the attention and positive interest of wider society.”

Michael does not believe this can be done by sitting in our ivory tower – or tack room – and showing the wider world what we do and how good it is.

“We have to do it by saying ‘Here are the challenges that society faces’,” he said. “Be that loneliness, or access to physical exercise for disabled people; here’s a way where horses are well placed and equipped to support those challenges. Everyone who’s engaged in horses understands some of those societal challenges, because we’re all facing them. Exploring the role of hosting that and supporting the groups, of course like RDA, who deliver on that, I think is paramount.”

So this is something everyone can do; if every horse owner has an opportunity to engage a non-horsey member of the public, perhaps this is not a duty, but an opportunity, to bring someone new on board.

Michael mentioned Park Lane RDA in Teddington, London, which has a stable with a window overlooking the street. Whichever horse is in there can look over the “cuddle door”, allowing city passers-by a quick glimpse into the equestrian world.

“You watch kids going to school, people on their way to work, taking a diversion down this unassuming suburban street to pat the pony,” Michael said. “It’s a really good example of a small bit of practice change that is engaging more people with horses, and I think it’s a really powerful story. It’s made a horse relevant.”

Everyone in the industry has connections with people outside it, and so all of us are advocates; we have a responsibility, Michael believes, to share the power of horses in a way that’s relevant to others. If each of us can convince one person, the cumulative effect would be huge.

Changing minds

Equestrianism is far from the first industry to experience the pressure of public opinion, and many others have turned things round.

Charlie Arnot, who grew up in agriculture, founded Look East as he had realised that “attacking those who attacked us wasn’t effective”, and he wanted to help agriculture businesses build public trust.

He told H&H one of the most important things any industry can do to secure support is to be transparent.

“Generally, people like the concept, but then they quickly are concerned about reckless oversharing and decide to do nothing because they’re not sure what to share and with whom,” he said. “So it’s a matter of going through a structured process to say ‘Here are the stakeholders that are important to our sector. What’s important to them? What do they want to know, and how do we engage with them in a way that will meet their information needs? It’s not sharing everything with everyone, it’s identifying who are the stakeholders who are interested.”

The second key is to welcome criticism and scepticism as an opportunity to engage.

“Often, when people say ‘I don’t like what you’re doing, I don’t like the way you treat those horses, I don’t think they should be used in competition’, our first response tends to be defensive, as opposed to listening and finding a place where we can make a connection,” Charlie said.

But when the connection is made, both people become “someone like me”. Look East’s shared values communication training has been taken up by thousands of people.

“Generally, when someone raises a concern about what’s happening in the equestrian world, what they’re saying is, ‘I care about animals. I’m not sure you do’,” Charlie said. “That’s the fundamental claim. So rather than becoming defensive in providing data on why this is the ‘right thing to do’, we can embrace that concern, and say ‘I really appreciate you raising that concern; I can tell you care a great deal about animals and horses. I respect that because I care a great deal about horses as well. What specific questions do you have and how can I provide information that’s important to you?’ Rather than doing a data dump to say ‘I’m right and you’re stupid’, we invite the conversation. ‘We have something in common, we both care about horses, so I welcome the conversation to better understand your concerns’.”

Once people feel acknowledged, Charlie said, they allow you to give them the information. But people have to listen, listen and listen; appreciate concerns, ask more about them and the questioner’s experiences that have shaped their opinion, understand, make the connection and then share their thoughts.

“That’s something everyone in the equestrian world can do,” he said. “Whatever your role, you have the opportunity to lean in.”

People have to resist the temptation to be defensive; a natural reaction if someone is attacking something that is so much a part of all of us.

“Most people want permission to believe these elegant animals are being well cared for,” Charlie said. “If you can give them enough information to give them permission to believe that, you’ve accomplished what you need. That won’t happen with a data dump, it’s by engaging them because you want them to trust you.”

Another key, Charlie says, is that if someone in the industry shows practices that are not acceptable, to the public or insiders, this has to be condemned – the action, not the person.

“You can say ‘What happened is completely unacceptable. It’s unacceptable to you. It’s unacceptable to us. We look forward to working with this individual to help him or her come back into the standards that we’ve established for our industry and that we know you expect of us,” he said.

“You can condemn what happened without condemning the person. We’ve done that with a lot of other sectors; when there’s been an undercover video related to animal abuse on a farm, industry bodies now are much more comfortable coming forward to say it’s not acceptable. The retailers used to say they were going to ban that farm from their supply chain. Now they say: ‘We’re going to put that farm on suspension until we have assurance they’ve got their program back in place’.”

Other riders can take a similar approach in such instances; condemning the action but not the perpetrator, as not doing so could imply that the behaviour is accepted and widespread. But often, many of us do not know what to say to try to help in a sticky situation.

Be part of the solution

“This is something that, in my opinion, has been really neglected,” equestrian PR expert Rhea Freeman told H&H. “The thing that’s been terrifying, is this silence, which doesn’t give people any guidance about how to help.

“Then denial about there being a problem when there clearly is something amiss, but we all need to be part of the solution.”

Rhea said she has heard from top riders who are worried about posting on social media for fear of sharing the “wrong thing”, so as a result don’t share anything.

“But we need to be putting more stuff out, showing behind the scenes, the love and the affection we feel for our horses,” she said. “Them winning at a competition is great, but actually, that’s such a small amount of their day.

“Ros Canter and Carl Hester do some of that, horses in the field together, and I think that’s what we need more of. Not just the shiny bits, we need more of the real life, day-to-day, love, affection and care of these horses and the relationships. That’s why we traipse across the field, rain coming in sideways, hanging on to a torch, getting soaked to check they’re ok. No sane person is doing that. But you do it because you love them, it’s that relationship, isn’t it?”

One rider Rhea cited as being very good at boosting public acceptance is Paris dressage team bronze medallist Becky Moody, who shares blogs “written by” her medal-winning home-bred Jagerbomb on social media.

Conveying the love

“A lot of horses genuinely do love doing it, and I think that’s a really hard thing to get across,” Becky told H&H. “I think we have to look at how we can do that. We have a bit of an issue within the equestrian community to improve the image. At the moment it’s dressage, but my feeling is that although it is dressage at the moment, we all have to come together, because it’s not going to remain just dressage.”

Becky said she has been struggling with some of the negative attention to the sport and has been doing what she can to change this.

“We have to be more open,” she said. “We have to learn to be better communicators. We have to make other equestrian people realise that although we’re competitors and competitive, we love our horses so much, and they’re so important to us. And the fact horses love doing it.

“There are people who think horses love hacking, and being turned out in the field, and that’s about it; they shouldn’t be ‘made’ to do other things. But I think it’s so good for their bodies, and their minds, and we have to try to find a way of communicating that.”

Becky has sought advice on trying to change perceptions but has had no “particularly insightful” answers.

“So through my own social media, I try as much as possible to get across the love we have for our horses, how much they do enjoy doing it,” she said. “And when I’m writing Bomb’s blog, there’s maybe some literary licence there! But his reaction to atmospheres, to people, his excitement, it’s all genuine. That is what he feels.”

Jagerbomb is a public equine figure who is clearly happy in his work, but Becky pointed out that she has other horses trained and managed in the same way but who are not at the same level, and the picture they present is not perfect. And in those cases, she says, we have to show that we know it is not yet perfect, but we are trying our best to get there.

“We just need to be trying to do the right thing,” she said. “Our sport is in trouble, but unless we start working together, it’s going to really be in trouble. There is no other way to look at it. We have to be more open and we have to be more communicative.”

Listening and communicating

Communication is key, within and emanating from the industry, and those with concerns need to know they are being listened to. Gemma Pearson, an equine vet, behaviour specialist and racing fan, is the co-author of a study published after last year’s Grand National demonstrations, looking at what the industry said in response. The main findings from that were that although the protestors’ aim was to prevent equine fatalities, the replies from the industry were mainly about how well they are looked after off the course.

“Trust, as we know, is one of the cornerstones of social licence, and transparency comes from that,” Gemma told H&H. “So we shouldn’t try to downplay things. We shouldn’t try to normalise when there are problems. And the more we can be honest and say ‘Yes, this is not where we would want to be in the industry, but we are working hard to change it’, people will trust us far more than if we try to say either it doesn’t occur or ‘That’s just normal for horses, and it’s not something we need to worry about, let’s focus on the positives instead’.

“If someone challenges and says, ‘I think horse racing is cruel’, the worst thing you can do is say ‘They’re looked after like kings’. The best thing is to say, ‘Why do you think it’s cruel?’ Then if people say, because of the number of horses killed on race tracks, you can say, ‘We are aware that’s a problem, and there’s work being undertaken by the British Horseracing Authority, among many other organisations, and we’re showing a reduction in that over time. ‘We know we’re not where we need to be; we have to do a lot better, but we’re working towards that.”

Gemma backed much of what Charlie said about digging into and understanding people’s specific concerns. One issue raised is that it is “not natural” for horses to be ridden.

‘To that, you could say ‘That’s a fair point, horses were not designed for people to ride them, but at the same time, dogs didn’t evolve as a species to be owned as pets by people. That’s ok, providing the animal has a good experience.

“We’re not just looking for a life worth living, but a good life. I think you can make an argument that if a horse is looked after according to its basic needs; friends, forage and freedom, it is sound and comfortable when ridden, training can actually increase little spikes of dopamine in the brain, which is the motivation and reward neurotransmitter.

“So actually, we know we can produce happiness through training and riding horses. And I think you could argue that taking a horse for a hack has some similarities to taking a dog for a walk; they get the opportunity to have environmental enrichment and see more of the world that they wouldn’t do otherwise.”

And a “natural” life is not necessarily the best one for an animal, it is worth pointing out. If they lived natural, wild lives, horses would have no access to veterinary care if injured or ill, or optimal nutrients, and they would be at risk of being hunted by predators. But on the other hand, horses are not necessarily better off, and no one opposed to equestrian sport would be convinced otherwise, by trumpeting about the amount of money spent on stables or rugs.

The biggest thing of course, Gemma said, is that even if the majority of the public did support horse sport, and believe welfare is the top priority, this is no good if the trust is misplaced, with which World Horse Welfare CEO Roly firmly agrees.

The real focus

“This may sound a very odd thing to say, but as this journey evolves, and we are clearly on the journey, I would almost encourage people to stop thinking about social licence or public acceptance,” Roly told H&H. “Because if there’s any indication that we’re doing anything just for how it looks, that will certainly not benefit our horses. And equally, it will not benefit building public trust, which is a key driver for acceptance.”

So despite everything all of us can do to increase support and relevance of horses, the biggest, most important thing is for each of us to ensure we are doing our utmost to give our horses a good life at all times.

“What we can all do is reflect back on what we are doing in our own world, with our own horses, or whatever association we have with the equine world, and constantly challenge ourselves,” Roly said. “Are we truly putting the horses as the number one stakeholder?

“I think a good measure is to think of the decisions we are making about our horses through the horses’ eyes. We don’t live in a perfect world, and you can’t always do what you believe is best for the horse, but we can always, or in most situations, do what’s better.

“If we constantly challenge ourselves to really show ourselves that’s what we’re doing, putting the horse at the centre and doing what’s in their best interests, that will relate to a narrative, a story, that will build trust, and public acceptance. Although we, of course, are delighted people are talking about it because it is an issue, you’ve got to get the sequencing of it right. And there is a danger of putting the cart before the horse in this regard.”

Key is, Roly added, at all times weighing up the potential risks and benefits to horses of all actions, and if the former outweigh the latter, to consider whether it is the right thing to do. And if a welfare issue is spotted, take the official paths; submit the issue and the evidence for investigation and official sanction – “as the standard you walk past is the standard you accept,” Roly said – rather than plastering accusations online for social media to be judge, jury and executioner.

We must all constantly be questioning and challenging ourselves and the status quo, be open to learning from trusted sources and taking new scientific evidence on board. And if we are truly doing everything we can to do what is genuinely best for our horses, that will be evident to all.

“Like everything in life, you can be an optimist and you can be a pessimist,” Roly said.

“I’m an eternal optimist, but I do honestly think that this is an exciting journey to be on. And if people aren’t excited to be on that journey, you possibly question whether horse ownership is right for them now. You need to have a real appetite for that, for both you and your horse.”

Tributes have been paid to a retired Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) pony who “gave laughter and smiles to all he met”.

Bramble, who retired to the Horse Trust after 10 years with the Gaddesden Place RDA, died last month aged 25, following a bout of colic.

A Horse Trust spokesperson described 13.2hh Bramble as “a pony with a heart of gold”.

“He was a gentle soul who gave laughter and smiles to all he met throughout his career,” he said, adding that Bramble would stand for riders to mount via electric ramps and hoists.

“To Bramble riding was more than work; it was a calling.”

The gelding took part in sponsored rides, open days, and dressage competitions. He retired last year following a final ride at the RDA dressage regionals.

“Bramble gave his all in his years with Gaddesden Place RDA and he leaves a legacy of love, strength, and compassion,” said the Horse Trust spokesperson, adding that he was welcomed into a “richly earned retirement” at the charity.

“In the time he had with us he enjoyed the peace and quiet he was more than worthy of, knowing he had made a difference in more lives than words could ever capture. Bramble was popular with all, making him a perfect candidate for our sponsorship scheme and we would like to thank those who supported him during his retirement.”

The spokesperson added: “Rest peacefully now, sweet Bramble. You gave your all and more, and you leave us with hearts full of gratitude. May you roam free and happy across boundless fields, knowing your legacy of love, courage, and kindness will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved you.”

‘Just by having him, I’d won’: horse who ‘touched countless lives’ wins national award aged 26

A horse who touched “countless lives with his unwavering dedication and boundless spirit” has been given a national award as he enjoys his retirement.

Patrick, owned by Hayleigh Blissett, was named British Horse Society (BHS) equine personality of the year at the annual BHS awards last month. The 26-year-old has been a much-loved part of the team at the Nantwich and District Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) group based at Reaseheath Equestrian Centre.

Hayleigh told H&H she took Patrick with her when she went to Reaseheath College, and he stayed on to benefit children and adults with disabilities.

“When I first watched him in an RDA session, I couldn’t stop crying,” she said. “I had no doubt he’d be great at it but it hadn’t crossed my mind. He was amazing.”

Kayliegh has owned Patrick since she was 10, 11 years ago.

“I used to go out for hours with a packed lunch,” she said. “When I first got him, I was quite little and he was big and strong and hadn’t really been handled by kids so he used to take me for a ride! But by the time I was 11 or 12, we’d be hacking up the main road, massive lorries coming past, and he always kept me so safe.”

Hayleigh said Patrick is a laid-back character who looks after everyone.

“He’s so chilled,” she said. “He loves attention and would happily stand to be stroked all day, and he’s really thoughtful. When I’m on him, he can be quite cheeky but for the RDA, he’s perfect, doesn’t put a foot wrong.”

Hayleigh left college after a year but started work near the college so she could still see Patrick, and she brought him home a few months ago.

“He’s not fully retired; the group wanted me still to have time with him, which is really sweet,” she said. “He hadn’t been home for four or five years and the first hack we went on, he was like a four-year-old; it was so good to see him so full of life and excited.”

Liz Cleghorn, a volunteer with Nantwich and District RDA, wrote Patrick’s citation for the award.

“It is with a mix of deep gratitude and bittersweet emotion that we nominate Patrick, our extraordinary RDA horse, for the equine personality of the year award,” it read. “As Patrick embarks on a well-deserved retirement, we reflect on his remarkable journey and the countless lives he has touched with his unwavering dedication and boundless spirit.

“Patrick has been the heart and soul of our RDA team providing transformative therapeutic riding sessions to children and adults with disabilities. Witnessing the sheer joy and sense of achievement on a rider’s face as they bond with Patrick is nothing short of magical. His patience and gentle nature have empowered individuals to surpass their physical limitations and discover newfound confidence and independence.

“His legacy is a shining example of the transformative power of equine therapy and the deep, unbreakable bond between humans and horses. Thank you, Patrick, for your years of service, love, and unwavering dedication. Enjoy your retirement—you have more than earned it.”

Ms Cleghorn told H&H that everyone loved Patrick.

“If you could have a perfect horse, he was it,” she said. “He deserves the award; he stands out. He had the temperament and ability to adapt to all riders, environments and situations. Everyone who met him or had the chance to ride him will say he’s an amazing horse.”

The RDA group has secured a grant for a new horse, but has to match-fund it; donations are open online.

Hayleigh added that she did not know about Patrick’s nomination the day before he won.

“I cried again!” she said. “I’d never competed with him or anything; just by having him, I’d already won. But to see him appreciated by so many people was really heartwarming, amazing. He’s one in a million, for sure.”

‘Her expertise and passion were inspirational’ farewell to dedicated trainer and group leader

Inspirational Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) leader Sarah Baker died at her Hertfordshire home on 21 September, aged 84 years young.

Sarah’s love of horses started from a very young age and permeated all aspects of her life. Aged five, Sarah yearned for a horse but as family ownership was not an option she simply improvised by tethering herself to a water butt and standing for ages in her garden pretending to be a pony.

When that palled she would put a string leading-rein on one of her sisters and get them on all fours to graze on the lawn. Eventually the family had an extended free loan of ponies from a local family – Sarah was delighted and her siblings much relieved…

Sarah passed on her love of horses to her own children and to many others. For years she ran the Standon Pony Show, which served as a lovely introduction for children (and parents) before they joined the Pony Club.

Sarah joined RDA in 1976, as a helper then an instructor. She was a founding member and trustee of one local group and a trustee and chair of another.

She was passionate about every aspect of the work – desperately concerned to ensure the continued existence of small RDA groups like hers, solicitous of all her helpers, determined to avoid box-ticking and to keep the sessions fun and, above all, relentlessly watchful of the children’s welfare.

Sarah’s many years of RDA service meant she was justly presented with the President’s Award in 2017.

Throughout her life Sarah demonstrated extraordinary leadership, drive, compassion and public service. She personally recruited vast numbers of volunteers to help with various local events and RDA groups – if Sarah asked you to help it was quite impossible to say no!

She also continued to serve as both chair and head coach of her RDA group until her passing. Her expertise, passion, enthusiasm and commitment were inspirational and she is remembered with deep fondness by those she leaves behind.

Sarah is survived by her devoted husband of 51 years Michael, her daughters Helen and Hannah, and her two grandchildren.

‘We always need more’: what makes a good therapy horse, and could yours help the RDA?

Being safe and steady is a huge part of what makes a good therapy horse; an equine who is handled or ridden by someone with a physical or learning disability needs to be ultra-trustworthy. However, according to Emma Briggs, head of coaching at the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA), this doesn’t mean a therapy equine is a one-size-fits-all stamp.

“People assume the RDA just does therapeutic riding – in reality, there’s so much more on offer,” she tells Horse & Hound. “We offer carriage driving and vaulting, as well as competitive equestrian disciplines like para dressage and showjumping. In the middle, we have an increasing program of non-ridden, equine-assisted activities. This includes Tea with a Pony, a sensory activity designed for people with disabilities or long-term health conditions like dementia.”

Emma adds that equestrian activity of all kinds has the power to unlock a never-ending list of benefits to participants. “I’ve only been in post a few months and I have witnessed improvements in communication skills in non-verbal participants, right through to increased confidence in socially anxious people who have come out of their shell. And for wheelchair users, carriage driving is an accessible physical activity, and a great way to enjoy the countryside.”

The RDA currently has 2,500 equines in use across the country who are owned, loaned or hired by the nearly 400 charities that make up the RDA federation. However, the RDA has a problem: 2,500 equines are insufficient to meet demand. What’s more, furnishing the charity with horses is becoming increasingly cost-prohibitive.

“Horses are key to our mission and without a supply of high-quality equines we can’t continue to deliver our life-changing impact,” Emma continues. “Our challenge is there’s a massive under-met demand for our service, and we always need more. However, finding those good RDA horses has got harder, and the cost of buying them has spiraled.”

Saxon, the RDA riding horse

When Kady Chatman, coach and trustee at Saxon RDA, Wiltshire, went to try a green but calm and willing black Irish cob for the group, she knew she’d found something special. When she found out his name was also Saxon, taking him home was written in the stars.

Kady tells us temperament, steadiness and reliability are what makes a good therapy horse – all things that Saxon has in spades, and qualities that helped him win the charity’s equine of the year award in 2023. He didn’t come to the group ready-made, but it wasn’t just the then-seven-year-old gelding’s eagerness to learn that made him perfect for the RDA. According to Kady, often what makes a good therapy horse is being young in years.

“A common misconception is that people think RDA horses are old and slow,” she says. “In fact, they need to be able to switch between so many different roles and have the right brain. So, while they need to be calm and predictable for therapeutic sessions, we also do para dressage, endurance and showjumping, so they need to be alert and lively too.”

Kady says Saxon couldn’t canter a 20m circle when he first came to the group, but he became fitter and stronger quickly through riding school use before stepping up to provide sessions for riders with disabilities. RDA horses have to be comfortable with being led and what the charity calls sidewalkers – volunteers who walk next to the rider, on one or both sides, to assure the rider’s safety, or explain the teacher’s instructions. While this can be quite an adjustment, according to Kady, Saxon took it in his stride.

“He’s a gem of a horse who can switch and do absolutely everything,” continues Kady. “He’ll do a therapy session with a wheelchair user riding him, and then an hour later he’s taking our autistic level four showjumping teenager over a course of 70cm jumps. And then in the afternoon, he might be stood being groomed by children.”

It wasn’t completely smooth sailing for Saxon. He tended to toss his head, and an equine dental technician confirmed it stemmed from wolf teeth fragments embedded in his gum, which were removed. Saxon was given ample time off to recuperate and Kady enlisted a loriner to recommend a suitable bit.

“I ended up going to a tack shop to buy a bit for him that cost over £100,” she explains. “When I paid and said it was for an RDA horse, I was asked why I was wasting my money. It makes me angry because it shows people don’t consider it important. Ultimately, he deserves the best equipment we can afford.”

Sam, the RDA carriage horse

From Wales to the streets of London, carriage horse Sam adapted well to life in Park Lane Stables in Teddington. “We didn’t actually go to see Sam, we bought him on a recommendation,” explains Park Lane RDA manager Natalie O’Rourke. “I did wonder how he’d adapt, but he came off the lorry straight into the stable and started munching on hay, which was great.”

Natalie says Sam, who is the RDA Horse of the Year for 2024, has a consistent, even temper and a loving personality – he loves people and is patient with them. “Blind people drive him, which is a massive thing,” Natalie tells us. “When we’re loading a wheelchair onto the carriage, you have to be able to trust the horse completely. We have a wheelchair user with epilepsy who comes from 40 miles away every week. Sam gives him all this freedom and sensory input.”

Natalie says it’s important that the relationship with RDA horses is two-way. “We’ve got a duty of care to ensure our horses have a good life,” says Natalie, “and we want them to be like willing team members. We choose to be part of RDA, but at the end of the day, horses don’t make that conscious choice. We strive to make sure they are all happy in their work and have enough time in the field and chilling out.”

How horses are matched to the RDA

“RDA groups vary in terms of what they offer, and their participants. So groups will choose horses based on the specific activities they run, and the people they are working with,” explains Emma, when asked what makes a good therapy horse. “We don’t take horses under five. Horses at the end of their working life are unsuitable because they need to be fit and sound.

“Many participants have reduced or restricted mobility, so the horses need to be responsive to aids – including voice aids.”

Natalie adds that horses with high-octane former careers can be the perfect fit. “We were given some ex-polo ponies, who are just amazing. They are really responsive and great for riders with limited dexterity, and they’re so patient. They’re used to doing one chukka and then waiting around, so they’re happy to stand.”

Emma explains that training is vital to ensure participants can mount safely. “A lot of horses aren’t taught to stand at the mounting block properly,” says Emma. “Riders without disabilities often just put one foot in the stirrup and go, so the horse starts moving off. Our horses have to stand well for their riders to safely mount, especially where hoists and hydraulic lifts are used.”

The act of riding can be an incredible form of physical therapy. Emma describes a young rider with cerebral palsy who has such improved core strength that she no longer needs sidewalkers. “Her physical strength has improved so dramatically just from walking on a horse, that she’s now competing in para dressage,” she says. “For this reason, an active walk is really important for our participants.”

Additionally, Emma says that horses need to be both people-orientated and willing to adapt because their experience in a ridden session will differ vastly from able-bodied riding lessons. “There’ll be more people in an arena and we might use things like soft toys in a session,” she explains. “We also use bending poles and hoops on the floor and horses need to be resilient enough to tackle this calmly.”

Emma says that new horses are never over faced and receive training, but they need to be innately adaptable. “We offer such a broad range of activities and the scope of participants is very broad. This means we’re delivering therapeutic riding while also helping people train to compete in our regional and national championships.

“There isn’t just one type of RDA participant, and there isn’t just one type of RDA horse to fit all – we need a range, from lead-rein ponies, to ex-competition horses.”

What makes a good therapy horse? How to get your horse involved

Suitable horses can be sold, gifted, loaned or hired out to RDA groups. “Anyone who thinks they have a suitable equine can get in touch with us, fill out a form and their details will be shared with the RDA network,” says Emma. “Any interested groups will be put in touch with you. Some people reach out directly to their local RDA group and loan their horses session by session – there are lots of ways to help.”

Potential RDA horses are assessed by an experienced RDA coach, or equine advisor to ascertain suitability. Horses who are gifted, purchased or long-term loaned are checked by a vet too.

“Any horse participating in RDA activity gets free vaccinations and free worm egg counts,” adds Emma. “All our horses enjoy hugely varied working lives, downtime and the very best care. We do everything possible to ensure RDA horses have excellent lives. They’re at the heart of what we do.”

Emma’s ultimate message to owners is that if they think they have an animal that might make a good therapy horse, just reach out. “Come and speak to us. We can’t deliver equestrian activity to our 25,000 participants without enough fit, healthy, and adaptable equines,” she says.

“Your horse could be instrumental in delivering a huge amount of positive impact. He’ll have a great life and be fantastically well cared for. If you think your horse would thrive in the RDA, we can put you in touch with a group where he can make a world of difference to people. He’ll be adored by those people in return.”

Why horses’ relevance to the public is key to our sport’s survival

The new chief executive of the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) believes horses’ social relevance is as key to the industry’s future as social licence.

Michael Bishop, who took on the job in April, said he is passionate about ensuring equestrianism is accessible, and about sharing the stories of how horses change human lives.

Mr Bishop told H&H a major thread he took from his previous job, director of corporate strategy and business improvement at Historic England, was the way to take a vehicle – in that case heritage – make it relevant to people and use it to improve their lives.

“The chance to connect those two things at RDA was an opportunity I couldn’t at least try throwing my hat in the ring for,” he said.

Michael, an amateur eventer, is a trustee of the British Racing School; what got him involved there was the ability of such an institution to “open up horses and equestrian sport to more people”.

“I’d seen the RDA as this incredible vehicle to tell a narrative about the connection horses have with people’s lives and how that can address some of society’s major challenges and the challenges people face,” he said.

Mr Bishop said his starting point is that the RDA is not a charity focused on equine care or welfare; these are of course very important but “first and foremost, we’re a health and wellbeing charity interested in improving the lives of disabled people in the UK”.

While finding his feet over the past four months, he said, he has been struck by the diversity of the 400 or so RDA groups, and the need to tell the stories of their work, from supporting riders and drivers with physical disabilities to, for example, the non-ridden work supporting people experiencing mental health crises.

“I really want to emphasise and share the incredible work RDA groups are doing because I think that can be undersold, or at least not well enough represented for the scale of impact,” he said. “RDA, by the number of volunteers, and participants we reach, is a major national charity, and I don’t think we’re good enough at telling that story and therefore seeking the support we critically need. I’d like us to have more data to be able to support that story and so be able to focus our resources and attention on supporting those people who are most in need of our support, and I hope that’s something data will help us achieve.”

Another of Mr Bishop’s key focuses is one that affects the whole industry.

“Clearly the social licence conversation is of critical importance, and I don’t think anyone involved in horses can underestimate the scale of that challenge,” he said. “But I think there’s an even bigger conversation we ought to be having, about the social relevance of horses. And I really want to use the RDA stories; there are lots of others too, to demonstrate how socially relevant horses can be to all of our lives.”

He explained that many of the public may not engage in a welfare-led or social licence debate but that the industry must show those people that horses are relevant and accessible to them.

“One thing I was struck by was people who wrote to me and said, ‘Fantastic you’re doing this. Here’s a picture of a niece or nephew who’s been to six sessions with their local RDA group, and here they are with confidence; one colleague sent me a picture of her niece now doing ballet, having gained the confidence through an RDA group.

“And why is that relevant to this conversation? Because there’s a family who had no previous connection with horses, and this message was, ‘I now get why you’re interested in this horse thing; I thought this was a bit odd, but, but now it’s relevant to me’. Those people can be passionate advocates for an active use of horses in our society, and without that connection, it just wouldn’t have been something that was on their radar.”

Mr Bishop said he believes the sector, including racing, has “a common responsibility to maintain that social relevance, while we have the really important conversation about social licence”.

“If we don’t look after relevance, how do we speak to different communities? How do we encourage them to engage with horses?” he said. “How do we demonstrate that horses are relevant to their lives? There’s a worse thing than losing licence, which is just becoming irrelevant.”

Mr Bishop said that of course the need for horse welfare to be at the forefront is crucial, but without social relevance, there will not be the opportunity to attract people into the industry.

He added that owing to a broken foot, he has not had as much time at the yard lately as he would like.

“I miss the bit at the end of the day, when there’s contented munching and all the jobs are done; that’s always the moment I come back to as my ‘this is the power of horses’,” he said. “That’s when I feel most settled in my life and content.

“That feeling has stayed with me from a kid in riding schools and that might be something we all take for granted, but that connection is something that we all have a responsibility to maintain.”

‘Her impact is immense’: volunteer honoured after half a century’s service

A Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) volunteer who has been given an award for 25 years’ service has actually completed twice that time.

Anna Power, of the Unicorn Centre in Hemlington, Middlesbrough, was praised for her “enormous” contribution to the charity, with which she has been involved since, and just before, its inception.

“Anna, now from near Stokesley, North Yorkshire, was one of the pioneering volunteers when RDA started in 1969, and even before that,” a spokesman for the centre said.

“Her contribution to RDA over the years has been enormous, and she still continues in a fundraising capacity today.”

Anna said she first became interested in RDA as she had a cousin with severe disabilities.

“In the 1960s they were kept hidden away,” she said. “I and some other friends were persuaded to go carol singing on our ponies to raise money for an experiment at Winford Orthopaedic Hospital near Bristol where a physio was convinced there were benefits from using ponies for therapy. This was considered sufficiently unusual that we ended up with our photo on the front of Horse & Hound! This was all before RDA was even thought of.”

Anna was working in London in the mid-1970s, and found there was an RDA group at Knightsbridge barracks.

“By this time RDA had been going for a few years and there was a bit of framework to what we were doing,” she said. “The bonus to this group was that we got to have a free ride as the ponies had to be collected from stables in Bayswater and ridden across Hyde Park. One week when there was a hiccup and no ponies, one of the guardsmen volunteers got permission from his commanding officer for us to have a conducted tour round the stables and other facilities at the barracks. Another memory was muck disposal; everything got swept or barrowed to a spot where heavy doors were lifted up and you just tipped into a skip underneath. The loose boxes for the drum horses were massive and had extra reinforcement.”

Anna moved with her family to North Yorkshire in the 1980s and joined the Gt Ayton & District RDA group, where she “played a leading role helping with lessons and on the committee until it amalgamated into the Unicorn Centre group in 1998”. She continued at the Unicorn Centre as a coach for many years, and is an “enthusiastic fundraiser”.

Pat White, chair of the Unicorn Centre trustees said: “Anna’s contribution to RDA generally, and in particular to the Unicorn Centre, has been outstanding. We’re so grateful for her hard work and commitment and the impact she has made on people using our services has been immense.”

Calling all ‘reindeer’: equestrian charity needs your help – and your pets’

The Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) is seeking your “reindeer” to help support its vital work in 2024 and beyond.

The charity has launched its Christmas appeal and has called on the aid of its supporters – and their pets.

“For our Christmas appeal, we are raising money to support our work up and down the country,” said an RDA spokesman.

“At RDA our horses and volunteers benefit the lives of 20,000 children and adults with disabilities, long-term health conditions, and mental health issues.

“Through fun activities including riding, carriage driving and unmounted sessions, we provide therapy, skills development and opportunities for achievement – all supported by 13,000 amazing volunteers and qualified coaches at over 400 RDA centres across the UK. We’ve been enriching lives through horses for nearly 55 years and our services have never been more in demand.

“At RDA we believe it’s what you can do that counts, and with more support, we can do even more.”

The RDA is also encouraging people to donate and to point to its campaign donation page.

‘My dreams are the same as everyone else’: calls for more para showing opportunities

Discussions have taken place around para showing – and whether more opportunities could be offered to give riders a platform to progress.

Although there are showing opportunities through the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA), and some grassroots shows, and people with disabilities can compete in able-bodied classes, riders have told H&H they would like to see more para-specific opportunities at county level and upwards.

Vicky Howarth, who is registered blind, told H&H she feels that “disabled riders don’t get a platform in showing”. She hopes to qualify for Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) via the SEIB Search for a Star Series in able-bodied classes, but said that if HOYS offered para-specific finals, she would aim for these instead.

“It feels like if you have a disability, you get pigeonholed into doing para dressage, but that’s not what I want to do,” she said.

“My dreams are the same as everyone else; I want to ride through the purple curtains at HOYS. The first thing you hear when you have a disability is you can go to RDA, and RDA provides brilliant opportunities, but there are lots of riders who want to do more in terms of county shows and qualifiers. There’s a bigger picture here and we have an opportunity to make a change.”

Michelle Hennessy, who has decreased mobility and fibromyalgia, agreed that she would like to see para-specific opportunities.“I wouldn’t go to a county show at the moment because I know that I wouldn’t get anywhere competing against able-bodied riders because of the weakness in my legs,” she told H&H.

“You always want to aim for more. It’s not so much that I’ve dreamt of getting to HOYS, but it would be lovely if I could.”

An RDA spokesman told H&H that the association provides a “wide range of opportunities for riders to compete, including showing”. This year the RDA national championships held three showing classes, which had more entries than ever before.

“Our classes are open to competitors with all disabilities, from RDA groups or as independent RDA riders, and they are direct entry with no qualification required,” said the spokesman.

“We put a greater emphasis on the horse/rider partnership, and how they perform together, over traditional showing and the conformation of the horse. We know that many RDA riders go on to compete at a very high level and it’s important that onward pathways continue to be developed across the sector and across all disciplines.”

Showing rider Heather Howe told H&H that in the past her mother Lesley Marshall had been prevented from doing some agricultural shows, as she is physically unable to run with her ponies in in-hand classes, and the shows did not allow a change of handler during the class to run her ponies for her. Heather said when they challenged this at the time, they were told “no”.

“In showing, there isn’t much opportunity for people with disabilities,” said Heather. “It would be nice to have a level platform for those with additional needs because within showing there’s still very much a traditional approach, and I think there’s room for thought.”

H&H found that some showing societies and organisations have disability policies and accept dispensation cards that allow assistance or a change of rider/handler under certain circumstances, including the British Show Pony Society, the National Pony Society, and The Showing Register. Competitors are encouraged to check with the relevant society before entering.

SEIB ran a RDA Search for a Star class until 2023, which offered qualification for the British Show Horse Association championships.“Although the SEIB Search for a Star series does not have a specific RDA class at this time, RDA riders are welcome to come to the qualifiers for HOYS and Your Horse Live, as long as they are able to compete on a level playing field with able-bodied riders and that includes working in,” SEIB marketing manager Nicolina MacKenzie told H&H.

“If a competitor is unable to trot a horse up, after explanation to the judge we are happy for a groom to undertake this part of the show. What will not be compromised is the safety of all competitors at the event. We have had disabled riders take part over the years and they have been welcomed into the Search for a Star family with open arms.”

A Grandstand spokesman told H&H that HOYS welcomes riders with disabilities at its qualifiers and at the show itself.

“We work with the relevant showing societies accordingly to allow riders to apply for a dispensation card if they are unable to complete all phases,” said the spokesman.

A spokesman for HPower, organisers of Royal Windsor Horse Show and London International, told H&H they are “very supportive of para showing”.

“The timetables for both events are extremely busy, and at present they are unable to accommodate any more classes over and above those they already have,” said the spokesman.

“They are however always open to discussion for new ideas and would be pleased to consider para opportunities in future.”

Dee Castellano is the organiser of grassroots show Supreme Showdown, which has always included classes for disabled riders and handlers, but she told H&H she can see challenges for show organisers running “traditional” showing classes split by horse type for para riders, as she believes classes would not get enough entries.

“We would love to put on separate disability classes for mountain and moorlands, cobs, hunters, but you just don’t get the numbers. But if some of the county shows decided to hold a championship for disabled riders, we would be happy to hold qualifiers for them. Showing should be for everybody,” she said.

‘He inspires me every day’: eight-year-old diagnosed with bone cancer to ride at national championships

An eight-year-old boy who was diagnosed with bone cancer last year has qualified for the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) National Championships.

Dylan Ward and Chanele Dandridge’s Welsh section A gelding Inki won their qualifier to earn their ticket to the championships, which are running at Hartpury this weekend (15-17 July). He had support from the team at Keysoe International – and a Paralympic legend.

“Dylan shows tremendous courage, strength and resilience every day – having undertaken almost a year of draining chemotherapy treatments,” a spokesman for Keysoe International said. “The cancer has left him with lifelong disabilities affecting his left side.

“We first met Dylan last September when he came along to our Keysoe Cuddle Therapy Centre to meet the Keysoe ponies, and we’ve been good friends ever since!”

The spokesman said throughout his illness, Dylan has “pushed through” to be able to ride Inki, including in the RDA regional qualifiers.

“Seeing how determined Dylan was to do well, we asked his mum Jessica how we could help,” the spokesman said.

“We got in touch with Natalie Banks from Peak Performance Horses and set up some private sessions for Dylan at Keysoe International to help perfect Dylan’s already great technique in preparation for his RDA qualifiers.”

As a surprise, the Keysoe team organised a meeting with multiple medal-winning para dressage rider Lee Pearson, who said: “Dylan’s bravery and commitment inspires me to try harder and enjoy every day.”

Dylan’s mother Jessica added: “It was just so beautiful. When we arrived Dylan got to meet Sir Lee Pearson and even got to wear one of his Tokyo gold medals. I can’t thank everyone involved for making it so, so special for Dylan – absolutely amazing.”

Dylan and Inki scored 77.05% to win their qualifier.

Keysoe International CEO Sarah Stoute said: “Due to how impressed we were with Dylan’s determination, and his obvious love and care for his pony Inki, we were more than happy to invest in Dylan, to make sure he is as prepared as he could be for the RDA National Championships. Good luck, Dylan!”

Wimbledon invites inspiring rider to perform coin-toss for ladies’ singles final

An “inspiring” Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) participant will perform the ladies’ singles final coin-toss on Wimbledon’s Centre Court.

Park Lane Stables RDA rider and volunteer Philippa George, 27, will toss the coin for the final between Ons Jabeur and Marketa Vondrousova tomorrow (15 July).

“I just can’t believe it still and I can’t wait for it. It’s going to be amazing,” said Philippa, who will enjoy a tour of the clubhouse and have lunch in the competitors’ restaurant before the match. She will be assisted with her on-court duties by championships referee Gerry Armstrong.

“Philippa is amazing. She is a great ambassador because a parent of a child with additional needs looks at Philippa and just sees that the future’s so bright,” said Park Lane founder and manager Natalie O’Rourke.

“We’re so lucky to have her as part of our family.”

The charity was nominated by Jenifer Hewitt, wife of All England Club chairman Ian Hewitt.

“In recognition of Ian Hewitt’s role in establishing the Wimbledon Foundation 10 years ago, we invited Ian and Jenifer to nominate two charities important to them for this year’s coin toss,” said Paige Murphy, head of the Wimbledon Foundation, a charity that “champions opportunity for all using the collective strength of Wimbledon to make a positive difference to people’s lives”.

“We’re delighted that through Jenifer nominating RDA we are able to give Philippa and Park Lane Stables RDA the recognition they deserve through this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to step out onto Centre Court and perform the coin toss at the ladies’ singles final.”

‘Long may they continue’: Britain’s best equestrian yards celebrated

The six top establishments in the country have been named, at the fifth SEIB Yard of the Year Awards 2023 in association with British Equestrian (BEF) and Horse & Hound.

The winners and runners-up in each of the six categories – DIY and full livery yards, small and large riding schools, competition venue and Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) centre – were announced at a celebratory lunch on 4 July.

H&H editor-in-chief Sarah Jenkins said: “H&H is happy to support these awards again, such is the support for yards nominated. It is a great opportunity to recognise excellence, and client appreciation of all the hard work and business acumen that goes in to running a truly successful yard. It is also wonderful to see what a difference each yard is making to the lives of riders. I hope all those nominated are rightly proud of the positive impact they have had – and huge congratulations to all this year’s winners.”

Arrow Riding Centre in Kent took the RDA centre of the year title, and Chard Equestrian Centre the competition venue award. Mill Farm DIY Livery Yard and Hurston Eventing and Dressage took the DIY and full livery yard awards respectively, and Hemps Green Riding Stables and Pinkmead Farm Equestrian Centre were the small and large riding schools of the year respectively.

SEIB marketing and events manager Nicolina MacKenzie said: “What a celebration of excellence in yards from Scotland through to Kent we have had. So many grateful customers, owners and riders have put time and thought into their nominations for the yards they love. To celebrate with and speak to our winners is so encouraging and long may they continue their hard work and the fabulous services they offer at this worrying time when many riding schools are facing closure.

“We were delighted to welcome the support of British Equestrian this year and to have Horse & Hound on board for the second time. The awards are growing and this extra support from leading industry names reflects this.”

‘Memories to last a lifetime’: medals galore for British riders at Special Olympics World Games

British riders shone at the Special Olympics World Games – winning 11 medals and building “memories that will last a lifetime”.

The Special Olympics World Games, which run every four years, provide training and competition opportunities to children and adults with intellectual disabilities, in 26 sports. This year’s Games took place in Berlin, where riders competed on horses provided by the host country.

In the A level category (walk, trot and canter), Christopher Bradley won gold in dressage, equitation, and working trails, and Phillip Palmer won silver in these events. In the B level (walk and trot), Millie Boult won gold in dressage, bronze in working trails and she was fourth in equitation. Lauren White won silver in dressage and gold in equitation and working trails.

British team head coach Julia Gourley told H&H the team rode “so well” and it was a “huge honour” to coach them.

“Special Olympics give opportunities for people with learning difficulties to compete in a level playing field, and to be a valued member of a team. They are able to show the world their ability rather than their disability,” she said.

Veronica Bradley, Christopher’s mother, told H&H the whole family has been on an “amazing adventure”, and she cannot thank Special Olympics Great Britain enough.

“Chris has memories to last a lifetime and all the team and their parents have forged lasting friendships,” she said.

“To bring home a medal of any description for his country would have been marvellous, but to win the first gold had us in tears, and the second made us speechless. Chris was under pressure to deliver the third, as we knew how much it meant to him to have the ‘full house’ – it’s still sinking in. We hope that Chris’s success will inspire others to get involved with Special Olympics. It’s a wonderful experience.”

Phillip said competing at the Games was a “dream come true”.

“The whole experience was breathtaking – from the opening ceremony to competing against other countries,” he said, adding that the team could not have done it without the support of Julia, and coach Bridget Mackwood.

“I’ve always seen us as a strong team from the beginning. We are unbeatable together”

Sharon Boult, Millie’s mother, said the Games had given Millie “enormous pride” in herself and her abilities as a horsewoman. Esther White, Lauren’s mother, said it was an “honour” to be at the Games, watching her daughter represent her country.

A Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) spokesman told H&H the association is “so proud” of the team.

“The competitors have excelled taking home a host of medals, and demonstrating everything the Special Olympics and RDA stand for in celebrating the inclusion and achievement of athletes with intellectual disabilities,” she said.

“Christopher, Phillip, Millie and Lauren represent RDA groups from across the UK and came together for the first time in Berlin, and plan to reunite at the RDA National Championships at Hartpury next month. We can’t wait to welcome them there.”

Multiple medal-winning German eventer Bettina Hoy attended the Special Olympics as an equestrian ambassador and told H&H the experience was “mind-blowing”, and “very humbling”.

“If you think how difficult it must be in some cases to ride a horse that you know, but to do it on a borrowed horse and build a partnership in a short space of time, I found that fascinating,” she said.

Bettina added that as a coach in Germany, she would like to see more workshops made available to coaches to give them the experience of teaching riders with intellectual disabilities.

“There was one rider on the podium who was autistic, and I know as an instructor I wouldn’t know how to approach this. We have therapeutic riding here, but it’s really in the bigger cities and is quite expensive, but if more centres have specially trained coaches, this would open more opportunities. The effect horses have on these riders is undeniable.”

Strengthening the horse-human bond: The King’s top honour for equine boss

World Horse Welfare chief executive Roly Owers has been recognised for his “unceasing hard work, leadership and drive” as he is appointed OBE for services to equine welfare.

Mr Owers is one of a number of equestrians named in the first King’s birthday honours list.

World Horse Welfare chairman Michael Baines said: “I am delighted that Roly has been recognised for his unceasing hard work, leadership and drive, which have been instrumental to the success of World Horse Welfare. He has embodied the compassionate, pragmatic approach to improving the lives of horses that has inspired the charity since it was founded by Ada Cole and continues to make us so relevant today.”

A spokesman for the charity said Mr Owers leads its work to improve equine welfare by “strengthening the horse-human relationship”, including the charity’s work with governments and institutions in the UK and EU, the World Organisation for Animal Health, the Food and Agriculture Organisation and the United Nations. He also advises the FEI, the International Horse Sports Confederation and the British Horseracing Authority on welfare.

Mr Owers said: “It is a privilege to be entrusted with leading the work of World Horse Welfare, and I am hugely thankful to my team and my family as this is as much for them as for me.

“What I find inspiring is that recognition at this level demonstrates the continued relevance of horses to society and the part we all play in protecting their welfare for future generations.”

Jane Barker, founder of the Perry Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) group and the Cavalier Centre, was appointed MBE, as was Snydale RDA founder Karen Bullock, RDA coach developer and volunteer and Catherine McCully who is also trustee of the Cobbes Meadow RDA group, all for services to charity and people with disabilities.

An RDA spokesman told H&H: “RDA is powered by an army of 13,000 amazing volunteers, without whom we could not deliver our life-changing activities. We are therefore proud and delighted that the dedication of some of our volunteers has been recognised in the 2023 King’s birthday honours list, and we send our thanks and congratulations to all of them.”

Rosalind Slinger, chair of the Pony Club’s centre membership committee, was appointed MBE for services to equestrianism and to charity, and Jennifer Pugh, chief medical officer of the Irish Horse Racing Regulatory Board, was appointed MBE for services to horse racing in Northern Ireland.

Celebrating excellence: shortlist announced for yard of the year awards

The finalists have been announced in the 2023 SEIB Yard of the Year Awards, in association with H&H and British Equestrian.

A panel of judges has decided on two finalists in each of the six categories; small and large riding schools, DIY and full livery yards, Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) centre and competition venue. The winners will be announced at an awards lunch in July.

The awards were set up by SEIB to celebrate excellence in teaching, training and horse care in yards across Britain. Horse & Hound came on board to support them in 2022 and this year British Equestrian has added its support by “rewarding and recognising the vital services provided to the equestrian industry by livery yards, riding schools, RDA centres and competition venues”.

The winners will be announced at a lunch at Dorney Lake, Berkshire, next month, to which the owners of the finalist yards have been invited.

SEIB marketing manager Nicolina Mackenzie said: “Our judges have done a brilliant job in going through all the many wonderful yards people have put forward. At SEIB, we know there are many livery yards, riding schools, RDA centres and competition venues that provide outstanding service and through these awards we are determined to put something back by recognising and highlighting their professionalism, skill and commitment to the industry.”

Yards were nominated by clients and the public and judged by a panel including H&H editor-in-chief Sarah Jenkins, Winnie Murphy of the BEF and Cheryl Johns, founder of Livery List. Shortlisted yards sent videos detailing their highlights and what they offer, after which the finalists were decided upon.

Sarah Jenkins said: “It was a pleasure to be invited to judge these awards again. I’m always blown away by the depth of support for all those yards nominated and the clear excellence shown in terms of both best practice and building wonderful communities that offer tremendous support to participants.

“The impact a great yard can have on riders’ lives is significant – and in many instances quite moving, too. I particularly enjoyed seeing those yards that give strong consideration to providing for and supporting all children and adults while recognising we are a neurodiverse society, as well as those yards adapting to be more sustainable and environmentally conscious – taking positive actions that put them a step ahead.”

‘A lady by nature and demeanour’: farewell to British gold medal-winning chef d’équipe

Ann Cutcliffe OBE, the honorary vice-president of the British Paralympic Association and influential figure in para dressage, died on 20 April, aged 80.

Mrs Cutcliffe joined the South Bucks Riding for the Disabled Association group in 1977, and soon became an instructor. She was an inspiration and joy to all the riders she taught.

She went on to hold central roles in the para equestrian world. From those riding for therapy through the RDA to athletes competing on the world stage, countless riders flourished under her support and leadership. In 2000 she was chef d’équipe for the gold medal-winning British team at the Sydney Games, and in 2004 was the chief selector for Athens, where the team again won gold.

Mrs Cutcliffe was a British Paralympic Association board member from 2001 until 2013, and was involved in charities including WheelPower and Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. She was an RDA board member, a member of the International Paralympic Equestrian Committee, and served on the British Dressage (BD) committee for numerous years.

She was appointed OBE for services to para equestrian sport in the 2011 new year honours list and the next year was involved with the London 2012 International Inspiration programme, having been part of the committee during the bid process for the London Games.

Chris Porterfield, BD judge and FEI para judge and steward, said Mrs Cutcliffe was a “lady by nature and in her demeanour”.

“She was always gracious, and very good at persuading people and getting the very best out of them. It was Ann, with Inger Bryant and Jonquil Solt who really pushed the para movement forward, eventually leading to para dressage becoming an FEI discipline in 2006,” she said. “She was an inspiration to so many and we owe her a huge debt of gratitude.”

A BD spokesman said the board and staff offer sincerest condolences to Mrs Cutcliffe’s husband Peter and her family and friends: “She will be greatly missed and warmly remembered by so many within para dressage and para sport as a whole.”

Shock and sadness as CEO and chair resign from major equestrian organisation

The Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) has “with great sadness” announced the resignations of its new chief executive and its chair.

The RDA confirmed that both Kathryn England, who had recently started as CEO, and Rachel Medill, who had been in her role for nearly two years, are both stepping down.

“We know that this news will come as a shock to many of you, particularly given Kathryn’s recent appointment and it clearly creates a challenge for all of us within RDA,” a spokesman for the charity said.

The spokesman added that over the past few months, “a significant difference of opinion and concern around changes that have been made and the approach to change taken within RDA over the past couple of years” had become apparent. She said that for “varying reasons”, it was this difference in opinion that had led to Ms England’s decision last week, and Ms Medill’s this week.

“The board is committed to understanding this challenge in full and to learn any lessons about how we take RDA forward,” the spokesman said. “We will keep everyone informed of developments.”

The charity is looking to appoint Neil Goldie-Scot as interim chair and Lincoln Clarke has been asked to “pick up leadership responsibility in the meantime”. The RDA is holding a board meeting today (30 March) and will give an update tomorrow.

Mr Goldie-Scot said: “This is a very difficult day for RDA and it is incredibly sad that we are losing Kathryn England and Rachel Medill. We want to recognise the incredible work and commitment of our staff and volunteers and we want to apologise to all of you for the concern this is causing. As a board we are absolutely committed to resolving our differences and building solid foundations for the future, and we will learn from any issues raised. RDA remains an incredible organisation and we will get through this difficult period to ensure we can continue to deliver our mission and support so many people who benefit from the work we do.”

Ms England said she had resigned “with huge regret”.

“You all know that I took up this role with real pride and enthusiasm,” she said. “However, I have decided that I am not the person to take the organisation forward at this time. I have met with the board who, whilst deeply saddened by my decision, have listened at length and taken my feedback seriously and I am pleased to hear that they are taking forward an action plan.”

Ms Medill said she told the board of her decision with “great sadness”.

“I joined at a time of great challenge in the aftermath of the pandemic but also of great opportunity as the organisation looked to increase its number of participants,” she said.

“I’m proud of the steps we took to build a foundation for its long-term future and I hope that the forward-looking approach the board has taken will continue.

“I want to pay tribute to the extraordinary nature of RDA – it improves the lives of thousands of people every day through the efforts of over 13,000 people. It has been a privilege and a pleasure to meet so many of these inspiring people and I wish the organisation every success in the future.”

‘The unifying power of sport’: four riders to represent Britain at the Special Olympics World Games

Four riders will represent Britain at the Special Olympics World Games in Berlin this summer.

The Special Olympics, which run every four years and are recognised by the International Olympic Committee, provide training and competition opportunities to children and adults with intellectual disabilities. This year’s Games (17–25 June) will welcome 7,000 athletes across 26 sports – including equestrian, with riders taking part in dressage, jumping, English equitation and working trails (an obstacle-based competition similar to Trec), on horses provided by the host country.

The riders selected to represent Britain are Phillip Palmer, 37, Christopher Bradley, 36, Millie Boult, 36, and 17-year-old Lauren White, who will all be taking part in dressage, jumping and working trails.

Head coach Julia Gourley, who helped the British equestrian team to 17 medals at the 2019 Special Olympics in Abu Dhabi, told H&H the Games give athletes with learning disabilities an opportunity to compete on a worldwide basis.

“You really see the athletes’ sense of confidence and independence grow throughout the process. I’m hugely proud of the riders, to be selected and to go and compete for their country on strange horses is a huge achievement,” she said.

“The Games are not for everybody, because for some going to another country, being away from home, and competing, can be a little bit too much out of their comfort zone. For the selection process, everyone had to have qualified by already competing at a national competition.

“We’ve had a training weekend with the riders at Sparsholt College, where they also used the mechanical horse which is really useful for working on their positions and use of aid, and we also had a session in Birmingham where the riders got together with athletes from other sports too.”

Phillip Palmer told H&H he was “really excited and proud” to be selected.

“I have always wanted to be a part of Special Olympics Great Britain to compete internationally and it feels amazing to be a part of them,” he said. “I’m looking forward to the rest of the training weekends and can’t wait to compete in Berlin to show them what an amazing team we are and what we can do.”

Lauren White said riding horses had “helped me so much”, and her mother Esther added that the Special Olympics is a “wonderful opportunity”.

“While there is so much good going on with increasing inclusiveness, there are still so many areas in life that exclude or judge or struggle to know how to respond to a lively ADHD young lady and all the challenges that brings for her in life,” Esther told H&H.

“The Games will help not only her with more equestrian experience, but also help her to be more confident and independent as she grows up into the wonderful human being she is.”

Philip and Sharon Boult, Millie’s parents, said their daughter has “worked so hard and come such a long way” in confidence and independence since she started riding – and Geoff and Veronica Bradley, parents of Christopher, said their son’s selection was the start of an “epic adventure”.

All four riders are members of Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) groups, and an RDA spokesman told H&H the charity is “delighted” that equestrian sport is still “such an integral part” of the Special Olympics World Games.

“The games are a tangible demonstration of the unifying power of sport, and a fantastic opportunity to showcase the skills and accomplishments of athletes with intellectual disabilities on the world stage,” he said.

A British Equestrian spokesman told H&H the organisation is “very proud” of the athletes competing under the British flag.

“We wish them and their supporters the best of luck and hope all their hard work and dedication is successful,” said the spokesman.

‘Her passion was evident’: farewell to ‘central figure’ of para equestrian sport

Lynn Lawford, the former chair of the Dyffryn Ceiriog Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) group and international para classifier died on 18 December, aged 72.

Born in Camberwell, south London, Mrs Lawford studied remedial gymnastics and became a chartered physiotherapist, working in cities around the UK.

She took up a position at Barnet Hospital in north London and during this time, met her husband Kyran. In 1973, they moved to Ceiriog Valley, Wales, when Mrs Lawford started working on the spinal unit of an orthopaedic hospital.

During the 1970s, Mrs Lawford “fell in love with the equestrian world” and bought her first horse. Through her work and ambition to help others and her love of horses, she became a long-term supporter of the RDA. She started a lifelong friendship with Anne Sopwith and helped Anne form the Dyffryn Ceiriog RDA group. Mrs Lawford later became chair of the group and was a great supporter of the Clwyd Special Riding Centre. She was also a regional physio for north Wales and sat on the RDA dressage committee.

Following Mrs Lawford’s retirement from her full-time role as a community physio, she became a para equestrian classifier and was a “central figure” for British Equestrian’s (BEF) para classification system. She was a leading representative on the FEI national classification panel and compensating aids working group, and in her role as FEI classifier she travelled to major para equestrian competitions around the world, including several Paralympic Games, before her retirement last year.

In November 2022, Mrs Lawford was awarded the BEF medal of honour for her “immeasurable contribution” to para equestrian sport, and her support of the development of the para equestrian classification system.

“Lynn’s passion for para classification and equestrian sport was evident from the work which she has done for us,” said Lynn Bailey, BEF head of integrity and HR.

“Her energy, commitment and selfless attitude resulted in many athletes both nationally and internationally being able to enjoy para equestrian competition in a way that would not be possible without people like Lynn to support them.”

She is survived by her husband Kyran, and their sons Liam and Nick.

Heartfelt final farewell to Sam, the cob who saved and changed lives

The heartbroken owners and riders of Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) stalwart Sam have paid tribute to his “lifesaving” contribution.

The 15.2hh cob, who won the hearts of staff and participants at Parklands RDA in Staffordshire, had to be put down in the autumn, after six years with the charity.

Parklands’ Alison Ramseier told H&H that horses such as Sam are “like gold dust”.

“He played a massively significant role in people’s lives,” she said. “His riders felt so safe on him; his riders were adults and a lot of them were able to come off the lead rein when they rode him; for some people with disabilities, it’s a huge thing to be off the lead rein and feel safe.

“He knew he could change gears; one minute he might be with a rider who was never going to trot, then his next rider could be learning to pop a cross-pole. He had a natural ability to pick up the pace and slow it down, and could be a bit cheeky on the ground; always nuzzling pockets but never nasty.”

Sam was found suffering with colic in October and there was nothing that could be done to save him. And after the heartbreak of losing him, Alison said, “The first thing we thought was about his riders”.

“Emily, who rode him, was in a dark place when she came to us,” she said. “And for Josh, Sam was a lifeline when things were tough. He wasn’t just their therapy when they were here, the horses help them manage other areas of their lives. He was a support for them, and now that’s been taken away.”

Sam’s riders are too big to ride the Parklands ponies and although they have been able to spend time grooming and on groundwork, it is not the same.

Parklands is trying to raise £10,000 for a new horse to allow riders like Josh and Emily to be able to do what they love. Alison said the difference this would make is unmeasurable.

“I don’t know if you can really explain the difference, but it would literally save lives,” she said. “We were the last chance for one rider – horses like this really, really do change people’s lives.”

‘The best £1k I’ve ever spent’: equine personality of the year retires aged 30

A pony who “has won the hearts of all who have ridden or worked with her”, and has just retired aged 30, is the 2022 British Horse Society (BHS) equine personality of the year.

The title, one of a number given every year by the BHS at its annual awards, goes to the horse or pony who has done the most for people.

Bonny, of Old Mill Stables in Cornwall, has been a riding school and Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) pony for over 20 years.

“She is such a kind, gentle pony and has taught multiple children to ride,” her citation reads.

“Bonny is honest, willing, dependable and a joy to ride, groom and tack. She has won the hearts of all who have ridden or worked with her from giving tiny tots confidence and a love of riding, through to opportunities for RDA riders to develop skills and widen their experience – and not least to embed in riders of all ages a love of horses and riding that will last a lifetime. She has given countless riders their first canter, their first hack, their first jump.”

Old Mill stables owner Lou Ridge told H&H Bonny will stay in the routine she has been in for the past 21 years.

“She’ll live in the field she’s been in ever since she came off the ramp,” she said. “She won’t go out in any other field; that one’s hers and as horses have come and gone, they’ve gone in with her and she’s nannied them and brought them up properly.

“She still comes in every morning with her gang, the ones she’s mentoring, and has her feed and a groom. We retired her as we didn’t want her to have the weight on her any more, and we wanted her to have a good retirement, being a horse. That’s what we try to do for all our horses. At the moment, she’s still happy to have a groom, but if she isn’t, that will be fine too.”

Old Mill Stables, which celebrated its 60th anniversary this year, is also home to the Southwest Cornwall RDA, in which Bonny has played a huge part.

“She’s been so many children’s teddy bear, and I’ve found children giving her a hug and having a weep about something that might be going on and she takes it for them,” she said. “She’s an absolute treasure.”

Lou added that Bonny cost about £1,000 to buy.

“The best thousand pounds I’ve ever spent,” she said.

Pioneering coach of disabled riders dies aged 86

Peter Felgate, one of the pioneers of the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) died on 27 September, aged 86.

Born in Chiswick in 1936, Mr Felgate started riding at Westerham Riding School, while fulfilling his national service at Biggin Hill airport. In the early days of married life, he lived in Knockholt, Kent, where he built some stables and started teaching people to ride. He was then approached by the local doctor who asked if he would teach some disabled children.

In 1965, he established Bradbourne Riding and Training Centre, in Sevenoaks, Kent, and started teaching full-time. He also enjoyed hunting and eventing, with his horse Seaweed. He was an active member of the local riding club and helped push forward the notion of greater coordination between the riding clubs, including inter-club competitions.

He was passionate about providing equal opportunities for all to enjoy riding and was one of the first in the country to offer lessons to disabled children and adults, recognising the benefits horses offer physically and mentally.

Bradbourne first began to take students from Delarue School in Tonbridge, Kent, Dorton House and Dean Park schools. Mr Felgate was always a lateral thinker and where there was a will, he would find a way. He had people who were blind riding around the arena with others calling out the markers, long before technology existed for audible letters, and riders with poor hip movement riding side-saddle or carriage driving. He never accepted something could not be done and found the biggest reward was the smiles and laughter on the faces of those he was coaching.

Princess Anne visited Bradbourne RDA Centre twice, the first time in 1989 when the centre had reopened following an arson attack. With the support of his family and coaches, Mr Felgate was determined to get the centre back up and running. He was incredibly proud of the work the charity did and the exceptional quality of the coaches and volunteers who continue his early work. Many of these coaches have worked with him for over 30 years.

Today, the centre continues to offer riding and driving to more than 100 people per week and has a network of coaches and volunteers of all ages, and this is the legacy Mr Felgate leaves behind.

He is deeply missed by his wife Liz, daughter Sara, grand-daughter Phillipa and great-grandchildren.

A Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) pony who brought joy to thousands of children and helped ignite the passion for riding in some of horse sport’s top competitors has died aged 29.

Tributes have been paid to Forester, who spent more than two decades at South Bucks RDA, brightening and changing the lives of those he touched every day.

“In his life, he did more good than some humans that try to do good, because he did it every day of the week,” Di Redfern of South Bucks RDA told H&H.

“Horses are incredible, and he was more incredible than most.”

Medal-winning para dressage riders Natasha Baker, Ricky Balshaw and Ireland’s Michael Murphy were among those to ride Forester.

Natasha, who rode him when he was a “cheeky” young pony, won her first trophy on the 13.2hh New Forest and credited him as the horse who gave her the belief she could “go on and achieve my dreams”.

“I was one of the first para riders to ride him,” Natasha told H&H. “He was so cheeky, I got bucked off him so many times! But he gave me so much.”

Natasha added that Forester was the first pony who gave her a taste of what dressage was about.

“He had a brilliant Scottish dressage to music soundtrack, which he loved. He was such a special pony, the first one I learnt to ride in an outline – he really taught me everything and I did so many ‘firsts’ with him. I know he wasn’t my own pony, but he was a pony of a lifetime. I can’t believe how many riders he has given those opportunities to,” she said.

“All RDA horses are special, he just had something extra special about him and the most incredible attitude towards work. He really looked after his riders – he had a bit of sass about him as well, but that’s what makes a good rider. He was an absolute star.”

Di remembered how Forester came to join the RDA group.

“He was advertised in the local paper – I called up and it turned out he was Lara Griffith’s pony. We bought him as a five- or six-year-old, and he has had the most amazing career,” she said.

“He attended the RDA championships for more than 20 years and always won something.

“He was a monkey, too! I remember in his early days helpers saying ‘he won’t let me tack him up’. I’d go in there and he would act as if butter wouldn’t melt.”

British Dressage judge Rachel Hillier helped school Forester, and he worked up to around elementary level. He was still being ridden, although his duties were in keeping with his veteran status.

“He would have helped thousands of children in those 20-odd years, he was very, very popular,” added Di.

“There are helpers here that can’t ever remember not having Forester around. He is very much missed.

“Thank you, Forester, for your lifetime of service. No pony has ever given more.”

Action planned on supply, demand, costs and licensing issues faced by our riding schools

“A SUPPLY and demand predicament”, licensing and rising costs are among the issues faced by riding schools, as action is planned to protect their future.

British Equestrian (BEF) worked with the British Horse Society (BHS), the Association of British Riding Schools (ABRS), the Pony Club and the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) on “ground-breaking” research on the sector, and has now revealed its results.

A survey was sent to nearly 1,700 centres in March, and 311 responded.

“The standout message was they are in the midst of a supply and demand predicament, which is both a positive and negative,” a BEF spokesman said. “Interest in riding remains buoyant, but over two thirds of centres are struggling to keep up with enquiries and take on new clients, creating a barrier to increasing participation.

“Conversely, on average, centres are running at 75% capacity due to issues around workforce, paid and volunteer, suitable and affordable horsepower, and skyrocketing costs. Over 70% reported that these issues have been further exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic, compounded by an average of 62% reduction of income since the lockdowns of 2020 and 2021.”

Licensing is also having an impact; the “costs, complexity and time involved are considerable”, which is frustrating for some respondents.

“This research data will help us better understand the current challenges, which we can use to work towards a viable future for our riding centres, and I’d like to thank all those who took time to facilitate and complete the survey, which has given us incredible insight,” said BEF head of participation Mandana Mehran Pour.

“It’s been an incredibly challenging time for our riding centres, who have shown remarkable resilience, and there is a degree of optimism. This study has highlighted the diversity of riding centres across the UK landscape, and the struggles they face to adapt and grow to meet challenges.

“British Equestrian, along with member bodies, is determined to support these centres to help equestrianism remain popular and accessible for all. We now need to identify and execute plans to best support these centres and make sure they can convert interest into income through what will be another highly turbulent year as the cost-of-living challenges intensify existing issues.”

BEF, with the other organisations involved, has pulled six key findings, from which short-, medium- and long-term projects will be developed. These are: workforce, horsepower, licensing, capacity demands, growth and costs. Plans include addressing the staff shortage, investigating options for sourcing horses, looking at licensing requirements and funding opportunities and monitoring rising costs.

The BEF has already made progress, and is working with Sport England to deliver the £195,000 Together Fund, to which centres can apply for grants.

Andy Holden, who owns Longfield Equestrian Centre in Lancashire with his wife Christine Farnaby, and responded to the survey, told H&H staffing is an issue.

“Everyone I’ve spoken to seems to be struggling to get staff,” he said. “That’s a problem, but rising costs are a big problem too.

“Electricity, feed; we’ve been in business over 40 years and have never known costs rise so much in such a short time. It’s good there are people trying to do something; the BHS helped us through Covid, which was really appreciated, and anything that could help in any way now will also be much appreciated.”

BHS CEO James Hick told H&H the society had given over £1.2m to schools during Covid, and that its careers fund and rehoming project with the RSPCA should help address staffing and horse-sourcing issues.

“This survey confirms that we must all play our part to support the industry so it can thrive,” he said. “Without this support, it could impact equestrianism for future generations”

Government urged to invest in riding along with walking and cycling

Calls have been made for equestrian activities to be included in “social prescribing”, as new funding is announced for walking and cycling.

The Government’s Department for Transport (DfT) announced last month that 11 local authorities in England will benefit from £12.7m funding, which will be used for pilot projects including cycle training, bike loans and walking groups. The pilot is part of the Government’s aim to “evaluate the impact of cycling and walking on an individual’s health, such as reduced GP appointments and reliance on mediation due to more physical activity”.

Transport, active travel and health officials will work together towards a “whole systems approach to health improvement and tackling health disparities”.

Equestrian activities are not included in the pilot projects, but a spokesman for the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) told H&H the charity “welcomes” the funding and is “encouraged” to see social prescribing being invested in. As part of the RDA’s new strategy (news, 31 March) the charity announced plans to recognise the role the RDA could play in social prescribing.

“The concept is definitely gathering pace in England, with recent pilot schemes to connect people with the natural environment, and this latest investment in prescribing walking and cycling to benefit mental health and wellbeing,” said the spokesman.

“In terms of our participants, we would urge the government to look at the benefits of RDA activities and consider including riding in any expansion of this pilot project. In the immediate term, the biggest opportunity we have identified would involve GPs effectively ‘prescribing’ volunteering with RDA, to help tackle elements of mental and physical wellbeing that might otherwise involve the use of medication. Our report, Horses, Health and Happiness demonstrated that volunteering with RDA delivers a range of benefits: overcoming isolation, boosting mental health, improving physical health and developing knowledge and skills.”

The British Horse Society runs the Changing Lives through Horses scheme, aimed at helping young people expand skills and knowledge in an “alternative education setting”.

“Working with horses can hold a real benefit and can be a great way to connect people with their community. Their non-judgemental nature makes them the perfect companion, not to mention the opportunity they provide to help boost a person’s mental and physical wellbeing,” said the scheme’s head Alison Blackmore.

Six Shetlands among those honoured in annual awards

SIX Shetland ponies were among those honoured for their contribution to the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) this year.

Chelsea (pictured), Crunchie, Hector, Smartie, Star and Freddo, of Wellow RDA group, were joint winners of the RDA horse or pony of the year award. Theirs were among the names announced as award winners at the 2022 RDA national championships at Hartpury (15–16 July).

Interim RDA chief executive Paul Ringer said: “These lovely ponies engage with every adult and child. They love the attention, and the patience they display is outstanding.”

Wellow RDA founder and head coach Anne Allen, who accepted the award and sash on the ponies’ behalf, said: “They’re a wonderful breed. They’re just the right height for grooming, and children and adults have had so much joy from them.”

Annie Horshaw, of Throstle Nest RDA, was named young volunteer of the year.

Mr Ringer said Annie has “played a key role in establishing a youth group at the centre, as well as developing fundraisers”.

“She has developed personally and shown resilience and determination,” he added. “As well as her volunteering, Annie has had successes at the national championships.”

The participant of the year award went to Mia Prowse, who has been at Abingdon group for 14 years. During this time, she has had success at the RDA virtual championships and was selected to represent Britain at the virtual para dressage World Championships, in which she took a win and a second.

“Her sportsmanship is second to none as she has become a role model and inspiration to younger members of her group,” said Mr Ringer, adding that Mia is also a keen fundraiser. Abingdon said of Mia that “it is rare to meet a participant who has such an acute, gracious understanding of the wider picture of what it means to be part of an RDA group.”

The RDA UK volunteer of the year is Pauline Harrison, north regional chair, who has “an incredibly positive and thoughtful attitude and outlook. Never shying away from a challenge, the support she gives to others is something to be admired and proud of.”

Ms Harrison added: “The only reason I’m here is because I’ve got a wonderful team behind me and fantastic groups. I’m so proud of all of them.”

Every year, the Worshipful Company of Saddlers donates a bespoke “jubilee” saddle to a group, this year to Keswick (Calvert Trust) RDA.

“This is a wonderful gift that’s always gratefully received,” Mr Ringer said.

Riders shine at SFAS Riding for the Disabled national championships

The first Riding for the Disabled (RDA) Search for a Star (SFAS) showing competition since 2019 was held at the RDA national championships (15-16 July) at Hartpury College in Gloucestershire.

RDA centres from across the country were represented in the SFAS competition with competitors traveling from as far as Devon (Erme Valley RDA), Middlesborough (Tyne and Wear RDA) and Cambridgeshire (Cambridgeshire College RDA).

Richard Ramsay judged alongside Katie Jerram-Hunnable, and Chris Jerram-Hunnable stewarded the horses and riders to and from the arena and clearly explained the procedure while in the ring.

“In this class, we look for a very mannerly horse or pony that is straightforward for the rider. The horse or pony must enjoy the job and while conformation comes into it, manners and suitability are crucial,” said Katie.

Four champions were presented with sashes, plaques, rosettes and advice from the judges.

The overall championship title went to Tara Redfern and My Last Bob, owned by Dawn Whitmore from the Wenlo RDA group. Kirsty Mabin’s skewbald, Doylan Bodacious Gift from Erme Valley RDA, was judged the best pony and they won the class.

Chris Bradley and his own MBF Harley Rebel took the best rider title for Cambridgeshire College RDA, and Catriona McCartney and Axholme Thor took the championship for best combination for the Avon RDA Group.

“I’ve only been riding Bob for five or six weeks,” said Tara, who has been a carriage driving volunteer at Wenlo RDA and Carriage Driving Group. “I’ve never been to the RDA championships before and it’s been a great experience. It’s very kind of Dawn, Bob’s owner, to say we should have a go.”

Kirsty Mabin, best horse or pony champion with Erme Valley RDA’s Doylan Bodacious Gift, has competed in RDA SFAS before with placings in 2018 and in virtual SFAS during lockdown. Kirsty, who is 16 and a pupil at Coombe Pafford school in Torquay said: “My pony is just great. I really enjoyed the class.”

In 2019 Kirsty was diagnosed with scoliosis and had to spend two years without riding. This was her first competition back. Kirsty’s father said: “Kirsty has been back riding for the last six months. The team at Erme Valley are just great. Peggy Douglas who is in charge at the yard has organised for six horses and ponies to come to the championship with a total of 14 riders.”

Chris Bradley, who has also evented, competed in dressage and ridden at previous SFAS competitions, won the best rider title.

“I just knew that Harley was the horse for me when I first sat on him,” said Chris. “I’m so pleased with him. He jumps, too, and we are planning to start practising for the special Olympics.”

Chris has had a tough time, as his mother explained: “Chris’s former horse Quintus very sadly got a tumour and died. Chris thought he might not get another horse at one point. We started looking and sat on loads of horses before finding Harley. We’ve only had him since the end of April.”

The best combination winner, Catriona McCartney Kitson, was delighted with her five-year-old Axholme Thor, a throroughbred/Oldenburg gelding:

“He was backed when I bought him 18 months ago and I have brought him on. We have competed in dressage and jumping, but this was our first showing class together,” she said.

Catriona competes as an independent participant for the Avon RDA group. She continued: “I am hoping that we can go and do some eventing. It will be a big leap for us. I had a head injury in a riding accident which left me with a disability. I never thought I would be able to think about jumping again.”

Marketing manager at SEIB, Nicolina MacKenzie said: “We have run SFAS RDA for many years now and every time we are so impressed with the lovely horses and riders that come forward. Our judges are pleased to be able to offer help and encouragement all of which is appreciated – we are all very grateful for our busy judges and steward making the time to come along. Thank you to the RDA championships team for making us feel so welcome.”

The owners of what is thought to be the oldest riding school in the country are celebrating its 81st anniversary this weekend.

Bowlers Riding School, Merseyside, is holding an open day on 17 July to mark the milestone. It would have been an 80th anniversary celebration last year but Covid forced a postponement.

Holly Charnock, who works part-time at Bowlers, told H&H the story started when Tom Bowler bought a pony called Titch for his daughter Mary to ride, in 1941. Locals noticed and asked Tom to teach their children.

“From teaching other children, he was able to buy another pony, and it grew from there,” Holly said. “Mary took over when she was 16 — and ran the stables till about 16 years ago.”

Holly said Mary passed the business on to Karen Southeran, Holly’s mother, and Pat Armfield, adding “At 86, she’s earned her retirement!”

Bowlers has 28 school horses and ponies and 41 liveries, and Holly said “business is booming since Covid”.

“We’ve had to close our waiting list!” she said. “We’re the only five-star licensed riding school in the area but I think it’s also because we’ve been around so long. We’ve got great-grandchildren here now, of those who rode here; we’ve definitely gone through the generations.”

Bowlers is also home to the Formby & Southport Branch of the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA), and welcomed RDA president Princess Anne last year for a visit.

The open day will feature pony rides and displays, live music and stalls, from noon to 5pm and “anyone who would like to come is welcome”, Holly said.

“My mum and Pat have been at the stables 40 to 50 years,” she added. “I’ve been here since I was born.

“We feel really honoured. The number of people who have rung or messaged and if they can’t come on Saturday, have said how sorry they are [to miss it]; it just proves how much impact Bowlers has had on so many lives. Everyone who comes down here says what a lovely place it is.”

What a celebration of excellence’: top yards of 2022 honoured

FROM more than 650 nominations, and after an intensive judging process, the winners of the SEIB Yard of the Year Awards, in association with H&H, have been confirmed.

Titles were handed out for the best Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) centre, the best small and large riding schools and the top DIY and full livery yards, at a ceremony at Eton College on 6 July.

This is the first year the awards were run with the support of H&H. Editor-in-chief Sarah Jenkins said: “Over the past few years we have reported the challenges facing riding schools, competition centres and livery yards – exacerbated by the pandemic. Those who run and work at these centres put blood, sweat and tears into doing so, but never more so than since 2020. For those reasons I was happy to be involved in this year’s awards, to help celebrate and recognise those who have gone above and beyond, in particularly difficult times, to do the best for those riders who benefit from their expertise.

“The number and calibre of entries was high, and it was heart-warming to see the appreciation and support behind every nomination, to read some incredible stories of triumph against the odds, and to learn just how much of a difference all of those yards shortlisted are making. Their teams should be hugely proud of the job they are doing and the service they are providing – their clients and participants clearly think a great deal of them.”

The RDA centre of the year was Erme Valley, with Penniwells RDA highly commended.

“It is fantastic, much appreciated support,” said Erme Valley founder Peggy Douglas. “Everyone on our team knows they are part of the award – staff, volunteers and participants. It is because of them we have received this award.”

Mill Farm won the DIY livery yard, with Whincover Farm Livery Stables highly commended. Julia Banwell, who owns the yard with her husband Robert, said: “Our lovely liveries nominated us and they all wanted to be in our video submission for the awards. They put forward what the yard means to them. It is really nice to be recognised for the effort we all put in.”

Country Treks Equestrian Centre won the small riding school title, with Stonelea Riding School highly commended. Country Treks owner Stephanie Eddies-Davies said: “This is just magic! We have been running for 34 years and to get this recognition is such a boost for us and our staff and customers. It feels like we are finally reaping the benefits of the blood, sweat and tears we have put in over the years.”

Mount Mascal Stables won the large riding school title, with Summerfield Stables, Horses in the Community, highly commended.

Mount Mascal owner Alison Window said: “The Mount Mascal Stables team – human and horse — are our true heros and make it all possible. Thanks also to our lovely clients for their nominations and to SEIB for the award.”

The full livery yard award went to Mark Walters and Nicholas Lawson of Corvedale Equestrian (pictured), with OSH Dressage highly commended. Mr Walters said: “It was a genuine surprise to have been nominated by our wonderful liveries, they kept it very quiet! Our focus is on providing a non-judgmental, supportive environment where we coach, guide and help our clients.”

The new competition venue of the year title went to Colraine Equestrian Centre, with Chard and Netherton equestrian centres highly commended. Colraine general manager Helena Ellery said: “This means everything to us. Both Becky [King, of Colraine] and I have young children and we give up our family time each weekend to be there so to achieve this recognition is amazing. This award shows that we are going in the right direction.”

SEIB marketing manager Nicolina MacKenzie said: “What a celebration of excellence we have had. So many grateful customers, owners and riders have put time and thought into their nominations for the yards they love. To celebrate with and speak to our winners is so encouraging and long may they continue their hard work and the fabulous services they offer.”

Shows take steps to support competitors and horses, as Met Office issues ‘extreme heat’ warning

Event organisers are taking extra steps to support horses and riders, as the Met Office issues an amber “extreme heat” warning for the weekend.

The Met Office has issued the warning in England and Wales for Sunday (17 July) and Monday, as temperatures are expected to reach over 35C in the southwest, and more widely around 32C in other areas. Further north, and in Scotland, temperatures are expected to be in the mid- to high 20s.

With equestrian sport scheduled across the disciplines this week organisers and venues have been taking steps to help riders and horses stay cool.

Lauren Fogg of Arena UK, which is running a four-day British Showjumping competition from tomorrow (13 July) incorporating second-round classes, told H&H they have sold 500 stables but some competitors based further afield have withdrawn. The centre has announced measures including early starts, revised timetables, and extra staff on hand to make course changes quicker.

“We are starting at 7am every day and making sure there is plenty of water everywhere for horses as they need it. We’re trying to make things quicker for everyone, and we’re also allowing people to arrive earlier than usual and we won’t close until 11pm, to allow people to travel at slightly cooler times,” she said, adding riders can compete without jackets but must have their shoulders covered for all classes – except for Horse of the Year Show qualifiers, which will be decided by the judges on the day.

“We are a bit concerned about the heat but we want to do everything we possibly can to make sure it runs smoothly.”

Extra watering has been taking place at Oxfordshire’s Upton House ahead of its British Eventing fixture tomorrow and Thursday.

Joint organiser Jessica Thomas told H&H the ground is “amazingly good” despite the hot weather, and that it is not forecast to be as hot on either day as it is at the weekend.

“Dave Thornton, who runs the farm at Upton Estate, has made a huge effort getting the ground how we wanted it, and it wasn’t as hard as it has been in the past when we started work on it [earlier in the year] so that was really good,” she said.

“There will be extra water provision at the end of the cross-country, but it’s important that we still need people to bring their own.”

There will be donation buckets around Upton for anyone who wishes to contribute to the additional course-watering costs.

A spokesman for the Cotswold Cup, taking place at Barbury Castle (16-17 July), said they are working closely with Barbury organisers Musketeer Events to monitor the weather and put additional provisions in place “as and when the need for them arises”.

Jenny Meiklejohn of Musketeer told H&H they have “slightly adjusted” the cross-country course to make more use of flatter ground.

“We’re not sending them up the hills as much and we have upped the amount of water provision, in the lorry park, and at the start and finish, so there will be huge amounts of cold water for people to cool their horses. We are also going to have ‘mobile water’, with people like cross-country stewards and the fence repair team so if anyone gets stuck on course, there will be water available for both horse and rider.”

Jenny added they are also advising competitors to bring their own water and to make sure they “manage their own horses’ welfare”.

“It’s conditions that are unusual in this country, but horse sport is carried on around the world in much hotter temperatures, so it’s probably something we all find a bit shocking but if you’re an event rider in Australia it’s very common practice to be riding in temperatures like this. It’s not that humid so we don’t have to deal with that. People just have to be sensible and look after their horses,” she said.

Show cancellations and postponements

The Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) national championships at Hartpury will now only run two days, from 15-16 July, instead of three.

An RDA spokesman said in light of the Met Office weather warning for Sunday, the difficult decision had been taken to suspend competition that day.

“For those RDA groups and competitors due to compete on Sunday, this will obviously be a huge disappointment, but we feel it would be reckless to ignore the specific amber weather warning of extreme heat across Gloucestershire and expose both horses and people to unnecessary risk,” he said.

“The event will continue exactly as planned on Friday, with extra provision made to help ensure both horses and people can take part safely. On Saturday, changes have been made to some specific classes to help avoid the forecasted highest temperatures of the day.”

The spokesman added that the site will remain open on Saturday evening and into Sunday morning to enable groups to stayover on Saturday if they had planned to do so, and leave a time that “best suits the welfare of the horses and teams”.

Sunday entry fees will be refunded, and all accommodation fees for Saturday night will be refunded even if they decide to stay, to “allow everyone to make the best possible decision” about their leaving times.

Gloucestershire-based Rectory Farm has cancelled its BS category one show on Sunday.

“As disappointed as we are to have made this decision, as always horse welfare and safety is paramount and with the expected extreme heat we believe that the correct decision was to cancel the day’s competition,” read a statement.

“We are very sorry for the inconvenience and disappointment this may have caused and we have refunded all competitors previously entered.”

The Rectory Farm BS show scheduled on Thursday (14 July) is still going ahead.

The Malvern Highland Pony show, which was to take place on 16-17 July at Three Counties Showground, has been postponed until 3-4 September.

The British Dressage classes that were going to take place on Tuesday 19 July at the Wellington Riding Petplan Equine Area Festival have been rescheduled for Friday 22 July.

Tips for horse owners

The British Horse Society has issued a number of tips for horse owners including ensuring a constant supply of clean and fresh water is available – and reminded that horses can drink up to 50 litres per day in hot weather.

“Be aware that buckets of water in the stable can become warm and possibly unpalatable if left to stand for too long, so you may need to change them more regularly than usual to keep them fresh,” said the spokesman.

“It is ideal to have more than one water source available in the field so that certain herd members aren’t prevented from drinking, or chased away by others. Keeping the water source away from a corner will help prevent a horse being cornered into a small area by another horse.”

The spokesman said when travelling, to go as early or as late as possible to avoid the hottest part of the day and to take more water than you think you will need.

“Some horses are fussy about drinking water away from home, so it could be essential to have a familiar supply. Carrying plenty of water is also a vital part of being prepared if your vehicle were to break down with your horses on board. You could be stuck at the side of the road waiting for a recovery crew so water will be vital to help keep your horse cool and hydrated,” he said.

The spokesman added that riders should ensure horses are cooled effectively after exercise.

“This can be achieved by continuously pouring cold water all over the horse’s body. Not scraping the water off the horse does not cause the skin temperature to rise,” he said.

‘Everyone should have the chance to feel this’: para ring organiser urges other shows to follow suit

The organiser of what may be the first local show to run a dedicated ring for para equestrians said she was in tears as she realised how much it meant to those who took part.

Andrea Povey of Fawley Farm Feeds, in Alton, Hampshire, told H&H she was “absolutely blown away” by the reaction to the initiative, at the family business’s annual show on 3 July.

The event has been running for nine years, in aid of good causes, and Andrea said the idea came from last year’s show.

“A lady came who was in a wheelchair; she was desperate to come and show her pony,” she said. “She said ‘I’m sure you’re going to say no’, and I was shocked by that word. I said ‘My show is for everyone, and everyone’s included’. So we made it happen.”

Andrea said that having checked the other horses were happy with the wheelchair, and with the judges allowing the competitor into the ring first, the competitor last year was “overjoyed” to be able to show her pony in hand.

“She went in the ring and led her pony like everyone else,” she said. “She was incredible, and it got me thinking.”

Realising no shows in the area had a para ring, Andrea contacted Nigel Hoppitt, chair of the local Broadlands Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) group, one of the 2022 show’s chosen charities.

“And we pulled it off,” she said. “I hadn’t realised that it just wasn’t out there; I didn’t realise people felt they couldn’t go to shows. I announced on Facebook that we were going to have a para ring, once we’d ticked every box, and I was blown away by the support.”

Andrea said one of the shop’s clients gave up her day to pick up the Broadlands RDA ponies, take them to the show and take them home again. Others entered a variety of classes on their own horses.

“I’ve had so many emails,” she said. “People were telling me their children had autism or ADHD, or other things, and they had ponies but had never thought about taking them to shows in case the child had an episode. With the stigma that goes along with it, it just wasn’t worth doing. But they came to this show.

“We had spectators crying at the ringside, people with no connection to the competitors, they were just blown away by watching them have the time of their lives.”

Andrea cited one girl, Libby Thorne, who made a TikTok video of her experience with her pony Poppy at the show.

“It meant so much to me to be included and enjoy showing my pony like everybody else,” Libby wrote. “We WILL be back next year.”

“I was sobbing when I saw her video,” Andrea said. “They were fantastic, and I shared it because I want to show everyone this is why we did it. The ring will always be at the show now.”

Andrea would like to see other shows following suit; one, booked on her land for a local bloodhound pack this summer, will also run a para ring.

“Someone posted it on another show’s page and the organiser said she’d think about it, but what is there to think about? Other shows need to be doing this,” she said.

“Everyone deserves to be treated equally. One lady at the show had been in Afghanistan and couldn’t walk far, but she wanted to be in that ring. Everyone should have the chance to feel what we feel when we enter a show; the buzz, the way you feel when you win a rosette. Reading the emails from people saying thank you for giving them or their children something they’d never been able to give; I was in tears all week.”

Mr Hoppitt told H&H: ‘The initial call from Andrea, our local feed supplier, to include a para ring was a breath of fresh air. The chance to be involved at the beginning of a much-needed change in the grass roots of the equestrian world. A first step that will make a difference for the disabled community who love horses.

“From the feedback and enquires Andrea has received, the decision was right. After this first one we can help with our riders’ anxiety issues and enter more riders next year. Maybe we can talk Andrea into an RDA carriage driving competition too, another great leveller.”

Celebrating excellence: shortlist of Britain’s top yards announced

The finalists in the SEIB Yard of the Year Awards 2022, in association with Horse & Hound, have been announced.

Following nominations and voting, the judges have decided on a shortlist in each of the six categories, covering livery yards, riding schools, competition venues and Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) centres.

The awards were set up to celebrate excellence in British yards, and support those that deserve recognition for their vital services to the industry. H&H is supporting the initiative, and the many yards that deserve recognition for the vital services they provide to the equestrian industry.

The winners will be announced at the SEIB Yard of the Year Awards lunch at Dorney Lake, Berkshire, on 6 July, to which the owners of the yards concerned have been invited.

Yards were nominated by clients and the public, then judged by a panel. Each shortlisted yard was asked to submit a video of its highlights and what it offers to clients.

SEIB marketing manager Nicolina Mackenzie said: “Our judges have done a brilliant job in going through all the many wonderful yards that people have put forward and evaluating the video content they have submitted. At SEIB, we know that there are many livery yards and riding schools that provide an outstanding service and through these awards we are determined to put something back by recognising and highlighting their professionalism, skill and commitment to the equestrian industry.”

H&H editor-in-chief Sarah Jenkins said it was “extremely difficult” to decide on the shortlist.

“It was heartwarming to be involved in judging these awards, to see so many people holding their nominated centres in such high regard and to see the spread of excellence across the country,” she said.

“It was particularly wonderful to see the excellent work being done by riding schools and RDA centres to give more riders who might not otherwise have the opportunity to get involved with horses that chance, and to see all riders benefit to such a degree. For that alone it was wonderful to be invited to help judge these awards. Similarly, following such a difficult time during Covid for all equestrian centres, it has been incredible to see the phenomenal hard work and goodwill that has gone into making those centres shortlisted thrive today against the odds.”

The judges are Richard Ramsay (Team Ramsay Horton), Sarah Jenkins (Horse & Hound), Emma Bedford (Your Horse Live), Petra Ingram (Horseworld), Katie Oswald (SEIB) and Georgina Dewar (SEIB).

Jonquil Solt, the former chair of the International Paralympic Equestrian Committee, who paved the way for disabled riders around the world, died on 11 June aged 88 following a long illness with dementia.

“She touched so many people and changed so many peoples’ lives, always for the better,” said her son Quentin Solt.

Born in 1933, Mrs Solt (née Denham-Davis) attended school in Gloucestershire. She worked for the family mail-order business J A Davis & Son, before working in travel around the world, including New York and San Francisco, in the late 1950s.

On her return to the UK she followed her passion for horses and studied at Porlock Vale Riding School, where she gained her British Horse Society instructor certificate. She later studied at St James’s Secretarial College and in 1961 became personal secretary to Lord McAlpine of the Alpine construction group. Around the same time she met her husband Bobby, and the couple married three months later. The couple had two sons, Timothy and Quentin, however Timothy died aged 13.

Mrs Solt became involved with the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) in 1965, and in 1980 became chair of the first RDA dressage committee. She travelled the world raising the profile of para dressage and played a pivotal role in setting up the infrastructure to support national and international para dressage competitions, including the first World Championships in 1987. This led to the inclusion of para dressage in the Paralympic Games for the first time in 1996, and Mrs Solt was in Atlanta as president of the ground jury.

In 1991 she was made vice-chairman of the International Paralympic Equestrian Committee, and became chair in 1995. She was also involved in the cooperation agreement that led to para dressage becoming an FEI discipline in 2006 – the first Paralympic sport to leave the International Paralympic Committee and join an international governing body, alongside able-bodied athletes.

Mrs Solt was awarded a number of accolades for her continuous work and dedication to para sport. In 1999 she won the humanitarian category at the European Women of Achievement Awards and in 2003 was appointed OBE for her services to disabled riding. In 2013 she received the Paralympic Order for her contribution to the Paralympic movement.

An RDA spokesman said the RDA family owes Mrs Solt a “huge debt of gratitude”.

“Her development of para dressage and her absolute dedication to opening up the world of competition to our riders is a legacy that will remain embedded in RDA forever. We have lost a true great, a trailblazer for disability sport who has made so much possible for so many people,” she said.

Mrs Solt was predeceased by Bobby in 2020. She is survived by Quentin, her daughter-in-law Susannah, and her granddaughters Lexi, Jemima and Zara.

Inspirational young rider who ‘wants to walk like other kids’ wins award for her courage

A young rider who has “resilience, courage and tenacity in spades” despite her disability hopes one day to showjump and ride along the beach.

Nine-year-old Kelsey Power, who has type three spinal muscular atrophy, was given the Maggis Tansley Award by Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) regional chairman John Chuter and county chair Cass O’Brien, on 2 April.

The Richmond & Catterick Riding for Disabled group nominated Kelsey, and the North Yorkshire and Cleveland committee felt she was the outstanding candidate. Ms O’Brien said: “She displayed all the criteria that this award is all about.”

Kelsey’s mother Hayley told H&H she had no idea the award was coming until Kelsey’s usual Saturday afternoon ride at Catterick Garrison Saddle Club.

“I had to hide and cry!” she said. “I’m so proud of her, she’s amazing.”

Hayley said Kelsey’s is the least severe form of the condition, but that many of those living with it are unable to walk by the age of 14. Kelsey uses a wheelchair, as if she walks for long distances, her legs give way, but does her best to walk as much as she can despite her weakness.

Hayley said Kelsey says she wants to “walk like other kids”.

“It breaks my heart,” she said. “She sees people her age running and she can’t.”

But four years ago, inspired by Hayley and one of her brothers, who both ride, Kelsey started with the RDA.

“She couldn’t wait,” Hayley said. “She loves horses so she was excited. She was nervous to start with but she absolutely loves it.”

Kelsey has two side-walkers to support her but has progressed from slow walking to trotting and steering her own pony. She has passed her stage one and two proficiency tests in riding and horse care and, Hayley says, has benefited physically.

“She couldn’t take her feet out of the stirrups when she started; now she can, and she can use her legs,” Hayley said. “She used to have to have someone’s hand on her back when she started but not now; she’s had lots of benefits.

“When she trots, we have to hold her as she goes floppy, bless her, but as soon as she gets on, she says ‘Are we trotting today?’ She was once left dangling off the side because my husband didn’t quite know how to hold her and I was having heart failure but she just said ‘Can we do it again?’! She wants to showjump when she’s older and it wouldn’t surprise me at all if she did.”

Kelsey is on a new drug that will slow the progress of her condition, and Hayley hopes she will be able to fulfil her dream of riding on the beach with her mother and brother.

“We might have to get a couple of side-walkers but we’re determined,” she said. “I have scoliosis and I have bad days but I look at her and think she’s still smiling.

RDA announces plans to support 10,000 more participants in new strategy

The Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) has announced an “ambitious” new strategy, with plans to support an additional 10,000 children and adults by 2025.

The charity has set out a three-year plan focusing on key areas; growth, resources for groups, structure, participants and volunteers, brand and sustainability. Plans include opening 40 new groups and 30 new accessibility mark centres (commercial riding schools trained by the RDA), developing new activities and expanding non-ridden activities, including programmes to support mental health, and recognising the part RDA can play in “social prescribing”.

New interim chief executive Paul Ringer, who replaces Ed Bracher next month when he leaves the charity after 17 years at the helm, told H&H the charity needs to “get ambitious” in what can be achieved.

“We are an organisation with an army of passionate and highly skilled volunteers – that’s the lifeblood of the charity,” he said. “The reality is we were hit by the pandemic in terms of numbers of riders and volunteers, and that’s not going to suddenly just bounce back, but there’s every hope with the right support our groups can really start to thrive again.

“Growth will need to be led and owned by groups locally, and supported centrally in a way that makes sense. There are some locations where we’d like to see more centres, and we’re here to do some hand-holding with groups trying to get back to pre-Covid levels.

“We’re trying to take a broader view about the widest range of people who can benefit from the RDA family or being around horses, and that’s where some of the new activities will come into play. Riding isn’t for everyone, but there’s also benefits from non-ridden activities that we can offer beyond the obvious and traditional.”

Mr Ringer said there are some “challenges” to overcome, including sourcing suitable horses which has been a major issue for the charity (news, 6 May).

“We know this continues to be a battle, and we are working on an equine plan looking at different solutions, from training young horses to raising more funds for buying horses,” he said.

“We’ve got to look at all options because if we’re just waiting for a single-solution response we’ll be waiting a long time and missing an opportunity to help more riders – and that’s not OK.”

RDA president the Princess Royal said the new strategy signals “a moment of change and opportunity”.

“United by our goal to bring the benefits of horses to as many disabled people as possible, we have a chance to make even more of a difference to communities all over the UK,” she said.

“During my visits to RDA groups I have seen first-hand the life-changing impact of our activities, brought about by that unique combination of participant, horse and volunteer. Now as we look to strengthen our groups and grow our reach, we will explore new ways for people to benefit – with horses at the heart of everything we do.”

New equine-assisted therapy register launches with Paralympian as patron

A register of practitioners offering equine-assisted therapy goes live next week, with the aim of providing “credibility and meaningful standards” for the industry.

In March 2021 H&H reported that a steering group had been formed involving organisations including the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA), Hartpury University, HorseBack UK and Sirona Therapeutic Horsemanship, with the aim of creating the voluntary Human Equine Interaction Register (HEIR). A consultation followed, with which more than 200 organisations engaged, including providers, funders and clients, and showed a “clear demand” for the register.

Operating under the umbrella of the Federation of Horses in Education and Therapy International, HEIR will launch on 31 March and provide a place where clients, service commissioners and funders can get “information and reassurance” that the organisation offering human-equine interaction services is “credible” and works to minimum standards.

A spokesman for the steering group said the number of human-equine interaction programmes available in the UK had increased significantly over the last decade, and the scope, size and professional backgrounds of these services “vary greatly, with “little coordination” as to standards of practice.

To join the register practitioners and organisations must submit documents and evidence to confirm that they align with and meet five criteria: professionalism, equine welfare, service provision and service user engagement, benefits and impact, and governance.

“The development of the register is a huge step forward in getting the field of human-equine interaction in the UK working together, building credibility with those that matter and making sure that we are all working to sensible and meaningful standards. It will take the industry forward with a giant leap,” said Ed Bracher, outgoing chief executive of RDA UK and chair of the HEIR steering group.

Paralympic medallist Natasha Baker, who has been appointed patron of the register, said she was “excited” to watch it grow.

“I think that coming up through RDA and benefiting not just physically, but through friendships, mixing with people with similar interests, and meeting people with different disabilities and challenges, has given me so much and without it, I wouldn’t have six gold medals to my name,” she said.

“There are so many individuals and organisations out there that provide these services and people need to be able to find them to access the service that best suits their needs.”

Nigel Payne of the Sir Peter O’Sullevan Trust said the organisation receives an “enormous” amount of applications for funding in which charities suggest they are “experts” in equine-assisted therapy, but said it was vital the trust knows the organisation is recognised through a form of “kitemark”.

“This register is perfect because we would like to be able to access a database, know what they do, where they are located and that they are safe to practise,” he said.

“This is so important as it avoids potential harm to service users and horses. As a grantmaker we need to know that they have been endorsed to be on the register.”

“Anna, now from near Stokesley, North Yorkshire, was one of the pioneering volunteers when RDA started in 1969, and even before that,” a spokesman for the centre said.

“Her contribution to RDA over the years has been enormous, and she still continues in a fundraising capacity today.”

Anna said she first became interested in RDA as she had a cousin with severe disabilities.

Pat White, chair of the Unicorn Centre trustees said: “Anna’s contribution to RDA generally, and in particular to the Unicorn Centre, has been outstanding. We’re so grateful for her hard work and commitment and the impact she has made on people using our services has been immense.”
