A top Spanish equestrian centre will play home to the world’s largest “removable” indoor arena.

Vejer de la Frontera-based centre the Dehesa Montenmedio, host of the Sunshine Tour, has invested 750,000 euros (£640,000) into building a new 90x45m indoor arena. The arena, which is a tent-like structure rather than fixed, will add to the 20 grass and sand arenas on the site.

A spokesman for the centre said the arena, which will be first used in January 2022, will allow competitions to be held when weather conditions are not favourable and it offers “great versatility and functionality” owing to its “dismountable nature”.

“It has a two-layer roof of polyester textile membrane coated in PVC with high-frequency welded keder. The two layers form an air chamber that provides high thermal insulation and wind resistance,” said the spokesman, who told H&H that the centre does not have a building permit so they cannot build an arena with a fixed structure.

Sunshine Tour director Teresa Blazquez said the new arena is the “icing on the cake” for the centre.

“One of the keys to the success of the Sunshine Tour is that when in the rest of the world it is impossible to compete on outdoor tracks [all year round] due to the climate, we are the oasis of Europe. Everyone knows with us they are guaranteed to be able to compete outdoors, which is essential for young horses. Inexperienced horses come to the circuit and leave Montenmedio in good shape. Now with the new indoor we give them the possibility to alternate the indoor arena with the others.

The spokesman added that the president of the Spanish equestrian federation Javier Revuelta “checked first-hand” the execution of the project and was “very satisfied” Spanish equestrian sport has a new facility of this “magnitude and scope”, providing a “definitive boost” for the circuit to establish itself among the world elite of equestrian facilities.

New legislation that sets a legal, industry standard for how waste carpet can be used in arena surfaces has come into force. H&H speaks to lawmakers and industry figures to find out what this will mean

A major step has been made towards ensuring arena surfaces are safe and not harmful to the wider environment.

The Environment Agency (EA) is steadily cracking down on materials used in equestrian surfaces, and this new move comes with strict criteria.

New legislation that sets a legal, industry standard – known as a “regulatory position statement” – for how waste carpet can be used in arena surfaces has come into force.

“This regulatory position statement only applies to waste carpet that has been shredded or is in fibre form before it is used,” states the EA.

It adds that this covers discarded carpet fibres and offcuts from new carpets manufactured in the UK and the EU that are classed as waste, and treated post-consumer waste carpet with all physical contaminants including, but not limited to metal, carpet grippers and non-carpet based plastics removed.

The strict new rules include set limits on the amount of carpet fibre in new all-weather arenas and surface top-ups, what sort of waste carpet can be used and the treatment it receives, and the distance between a new surface and watercourses as well as other protected sites (50m).

The EA must also be informed before it is used, and records kept for at least two years.

The industry knew these rules were coming and has been working with the EA to shape them.

A Defra spokesman confirmed to H&H that the new regulations only apply for new surfaces and top-ups of existing surfaces, and that it does not apply retrospectively, so there is no need for existing surfaces to be removed.

Carpet Gallop managing director Mark Gilbert told H&H the new regulation is a “great outcome”.

“The industry has worked hard behind the scenes with the project driven by Carpet Recycling UK (CRUK) and brought together a range of suppliers who on a day-to-day basis compete,” he said.

He added that the new regulation is “not so much a victory for our sector, but a start of a process” for a final “end-of-waste” position for carpet fibre to be achieved.

“In addition, we collectively showed how arenas and gallops should be built – regardless of the surface chosen – to avoid any impact on the environment. Planning permission should be gained by anyone building a gallop or an arena, and they should build it with correct drainage and surface containment,” he said.

Mr Gilbert added that concerns over other types of surface were also highlighted to the EA, and reminded equestrians that the use of PVC granulate is banned (news, 16 August 2018).

“[Carpet Gallop is] committed to making improvements in line with the regulations and will continue as a major contributor to the efforts of CRUK and our competitors as together we are making huge inroads that ultimately benefit all who have a deep-rooted love of all things equine,” he said.

Justin Chittenden, managing director of Equine Health Centre whose brands include Equivia Equestrian Surface, told H&H: “There has always been some concern, both on an environmental and user front, about the use of waste carpet in equestrian surfaces due to the level of contaminants, such as metal and plastics, that find their way into the surface.”

He added that the company has always used clean, post-industrial fibres that are permitted under the new regulations, rather than post-consumer fibres.

“This provides many benefits in so much as we are using a by-product of manufacturing. We use clean and traceable components and we can be certain of using fibres that are both safe for the environment and for the horses that use the surface,” he said.

“We’re pleased to see the Government and the Environment Agency taking this issue seriously by issuing the regulations and further clarification on what constitutes waste carpet.”

As summer ends, our thoughts turn to coping with whatever wintry weather is in store. Hannah Lemieux finds out what you need to consider if investing in an indoor school

Every rider will have most likely dreamt about access to an indoor arena at some point. Whether it is during the heat of high summer or the lashings of rain and unbearable cold of the winter, an indoor arena will be on many riders’ wishlists.

Should this dream become a reality, deciding where to start with constructing an indoor arena can be a minefield of information – where to put it, installation of the correct base and drainage, and, of course, what surface to put down.

If you have an existing building that you think would make a perfect indoor school, the best place to start is by contacting your local council and establishing if and what planning permission is required; then you can move on to the practicalities.

“If the building has a good, hard and level floor already, for example heavily compacted dirt or a concrete floor, a surface can be laid straight on to it. We usually have to do some internal levelling anyway, and in the past we have dropped an existing floor to provide more height above the surface,” says Linda Wright, the co-directer of Charles Britton Equestrian Construction, and Charles’ partner.

The company, which has built up a large portfolio over the past 41 years, converted an agricultural building into an indoor work area for Olympic gold medal-winning showjumper Nick Skelton.

“Planning consent is required when there is a change of use,” she adds. “Similarly, if you are wanting to add a roof on to an outdoor arena, this is achievable but permission is needed.

“If you are putting a roof on an uncoated surface [without a wax coating], it is necessary to introduce a means of watering. Surface water accumulated by the roof will need to be dealt with, however, and this could be captured and used to water the surface with.”

If starting from scratch with an indoor school, what is the most important aspect to consider after planning permission?

Linda references giving yourself enough time and the importance of the groundworks as top of the essentials list.

“The groundworks involved in an indoor arena are different to an outdoor because the foundations must properly support the steel or a glulam [laminated] timber portal frame. The base structure must be supportive but, unlike an outdoor arena, it is not necessary to be free-draining,” adds Linda. “You also need to think about if there is a sufficient power supply or if a new supply is needed.”

With the additional cost of the building, roofing, delivery of materials, erection and lighting, it is no surprise that an indoor arena will cost considerably more than an outdoor arena. However, in the long run, having an indoor arena can be more beneficial. Not being exposed to bad weather conditions means that surfaces indoors can last that bit longer. So while not a cheap option, an indoor arena is arguably more convenient, especially in our unpredictable climate.

Individual needs

What surface to put down in your new indoor arena can present another hurdle. Approaching a specialist surfacing company and asking for advice based on your individual needs is the best way to decipher what is best for you and your budget.

Martin Collins innovated the concept of the wax-coated surface around 40 years ago, having founded his eponymous arena surface company. The business is responsible for surfacing multiple top competition venues, including the London International Horse Show at Olympia.

“A wax-coated surface is better suited for an indoor arena with no irrigation required, and it is easier to maintain. If you opt for a sand and fibre surface it would need an irrigation system in place,” explains Martin’s son Nicholas Collins, director of the Martin Collins Group.

“You have to consider potential dust and airflow in an indoor arena, as they require good ventilation – a wax-coated surface is much cleaner.

“People are guided by budget, but regardless of what surface you choose, the base underneath it is very important and needs to be laser levelled. In an indoor arena, the base doesn’t need to drain, therefore we recommend an MOT type one or similar with a blind-off layer – compacted and well rolled to provide a solid foundation.”

The Martin Collins Group offers clients two distinct surfaces, the Ecotrack and Activ-Track. Both are dust-free, do not require irrigation and can be installed indoors or outdoors.

Described as “the superior arena surface for show venues and professional riders” by the company, Ecotrack is a blend of mixed fibres, high-grade industrial washed silica sand and PVC granules, blended with a wax coating and designed with the competition horse in mind.

The Activ-Track surface is the more affordable option and is suitable for all disciplines. It is not designed for heavy use like the Ecotrack, but instead for the smaller professional yard or rider wanting to enjoy all the benefits of a wax-coated surface.

‘Renewed moisture and bounce’

The industry of arena surfaces is forever evolving, and if a full wax surface is not within your budget, Equimulsion – where a wax coating is incorporated with an existing surface – could be a viable option.

“Equimulsion can be used as a repair product, sprayed and mixed into a tired waxed or non-waxed surface,” says Colin Ellison, the general manager at Combi-Ride. “It gives a surface renewed moisture and bounce with a consistent stable footing. It can also be mixed with a dry surface to create an entirely new waxed surface. We can supply this from £6.90 plus VAT per square metre – if necessary we can test how much wax a surface already contains, to advise the quantity of Equimulsion required, and this saves the expense of having to replace the whole surface.

Combi-Ride also offers a “dual stabiliser”, which is a combination of nylon-based polymer fibres and fine rubber crumb.

“When the dual stabiliser is combined with silica sand, a consistent and stable riding surface is created, to provide the support you and your horse require,” adds Colin.

If choosing a non-waxed sand-and-fibre surface, a water irrigation system could be required to keep the surface at its optimum. Combi-Ride can install a sub-surface irrigation system. The “leaky pipe system” comprises many pipes releasing water automatically into the sand surface – you can then control how much water is released.

While creating your own indoor arena may initially feel overwhelming, the best first step is to approach an arena and surfacing company that can explain the options based on your budget and help bring your dream indoor arena to fruition.

An indoor transformation

When Anfisa Ershova purchased an old riding school six years ago, she went about not only transforming the stables but also the existing indoor arena with the help of local builders.

“First of all we had to strip the asbestos cladding on the indoor arena and dispose of that safely, then remove the dirt that was being used as a surface,” explains Anfisa, who runs a livery yard in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, and owns dressage horses.

“We sandblasted the frame and painted it, then used perforated cladding for the walls and insulated roof panels. I am really proud of the new cladding because it keeps it cool while also allowing plenty of airflow. We sourced curved plastic kickboards, adding an Andrews Bowen Prowax surface and Equestrian Reflections mirrors.”

Anfisa was hoping to keep the existing roof before it became apparent it would need to be replaced. It was the most costly addition, at £50,000 including the lighting. The surface set her back around £30,000 and the kickboards were £15,000.

The transformation took five months to complete and Anfisa is delighted with the outcome, despite having to stretch her budget because of the roof.

Equestrian Direct offer their best tips for anyone considering building a sand school for the first time. From location to surface options, here’s everything you need to think about before getting started...

The perfect spot

Firstly, you will have to contact your local council and obtain planning permission.

The location for your new arena would ideally be on a level and well-draining area in a beautiful location. However, we don’t all have that option, so work with an experienced arena contractor to guide you through the process and avoid any pit-falls — they will advise you on the most suitable location.

Talk to the experts

There are many surface options these days suited to different requirements, disciplines and budgets. Reputable arena surface companies will be able to recommend their surfaces local to you and arrange a site visit. They will also be able to recommend the best surface options for you, provide samples, information and quotes.

Is there enough room?

Access to the building site is very important before work commences. The majority of loads are delivered by large Artic lorries, which are most cost effective. Beforehand, check and measure all access and turning points to be sure you can accommodate the size of delivery vehicle and avoid unnecessary charges. Your materials provider and contractor will be able to assist you with this.

Do your research

We all like to save money but, in a project like building a sand school, we must be realistic from the start and budget accordingly. It is essential to get it right from the construction to laying your chosen surface – trying to fix a bad job can be very costly and uneconomical in the long run, not to mention the possibility of causing injury to your horse. It is worth doing your research, all good companies will be happy to advise and give you a number of options to suit.

Try before you buy

Any well-established arena company will have access to a number of arenas across the country and can offer you the opportunity to visit these sites to check out the arenas beforehand. It is always beneficial to include a site visit in your research prior to buying. Some companies have their own research facilities, which you and your horse can visit, try a number of surfaces and meet with your advisor face to face to discuss your options.

Build it right

The construction of your arena is vital to its longevity. Getting advice from experienced arena manufacturers and suppliers at this stage could save you time and money in the future.

The best grade

The quality of sand varies considerably and the different grades and grain particle size do affect the performance of any arena. Equestrian grade Silica sand is essential for new builds, aiding drainage and firmness.

So you’ve decided to build your own arena. To avoid the common pitfalls, we have spoken to the expects to find out how to build a riding arena and what are the key points you need to consider before taking the plunge.

1. Location

If building a riding arena will be part of a bigger equestrian project, consider the whole layout upfront.

“You don’t want to compromise on the best solution,” advises Charles Britton, who runs the 40-year-old equestrian facilities company of the same name.

“Authorities are typically not keen for facilities to sprawl over too large an area, so putting it nearer to existing facilities will always make it easier to secure support,” he says.

While hedgerows and trees can provide shelter from prevailing wind, most installers advise steering clear because of the problems created by falling leaves and roots — while planners also object to the impact on mature trees.

Soil conditions can also be a consideration.

“An arena can be built on almost any ground, but if there are difficult conditions — for example if it’s rocky or boggy — then it is going to need more investment in either equipment or materials, so if there is an alternative position, consider it,” advises Charles. “Similarly, if you can’t get at least eight-wheel tipper lorries to the site, costs will be greater for smaller lorries or re-handling of materials.”

“Don’t worry too much about earthworks,” notes Total Equestrian Construction’s Steve Keen. “People are concerned if they have a slope that it will be expensive, but usually it’s the cheapest part.”

2. Size

The most popular arena size is 40x20m, while those dedicated to dressage may opt for a 60x20m layout. For jumping arenas, extra width is recommended.

“Even 40x25m makes a difference to where you can site jumps, so I always advise people to go for the extra five metres if they can,” says Steve.

Charles Britton also suggests being clear on how the arena will be used.

“Some uses are better served by another, separate facility. If you do a lot of lungeing, the arena can potentially be harmed by intense, concentrated activity. You may be better off having a separate lungeing arena, perhaps making the main arena a bit smaller to fund it.”

3. Base and drainage

The base is unquestionably the most important aspect of an arena build. If it isn’t constructed properly, the arena surface will never perform as intended and pooling water and soft spots will result.

“When you build an arena, only the surface and the fencing should need changing when they reach the end of their life expectancy, nothing else,” says Jackson Arena’s James Alford.

Different installers have different approaches to the structure of drainage — and it is an area for the expert to advise — but don’t skimp on stone or membranes.

“The key issue is hard limestone for the drainage network. It’s clean and it keeps the drains clean,” says James.

Leisure Ride’s chief executive officer Ross Hemming agrees: “You want the stone to be as hard as possible — limestone or granite work best, and it needs to be evenly compacted.” Having a suitable top membrane is also important to prevent puncturing.

“We recommend a minimum of 300g per square metre Newton tear strength,” Ross adds.

4. Surfaces

With such a wide range on offer — and many differing opinions as to what works best — choosing a surface can be a minefield.

Should you opt for woodchip, PVC, rubber-mix or sand and fibre?

“It is the one question that everyone gets hooked up on, yet it’s just a part of the whole decision process,” says Charles. “We would always stress though, don’t compromise on the rest of the structure to install a top-price surface — it won’t work.”

For most people, the primary factors influencing surface choice are budget and the level and type of use.

If you want to get a feel for the type of ride you are looking for and what would best suit the requirements of your discipline, try to see a surface in work rather than just viewing samples.

Most people installing an outdoor arena opt for a sand-based surface, and Ross has some basic advice: “The sand is most important thing. The surface will always ride deep if it’s wrong. You need angular, high-quality silica sand, not round grains. Damp binds the angular grains together.”

“Good” going on natural turf is considered the best surface for a horse, and this is what additives to sand are trying to mimic.

“Fibres of the right consistency will emulate turf’s root structure,” Ross explains.

Sand and rubber is a popular budget surface, whereas at the other end of the spectrum there is wax.

Wax surfaces were pioneered by Martin Collins Enterprises more than 30 years ago and are designed to provide the most consistent ride — although with greater capital outlay.

“Wax makes a surface behave as though it’s wet and minimises dust. It also repels water, which makes the arena less likely to freeze,” says Martin’s son Nicholas.

“It gives you finer control to create the ride you want — a surface should have controlled movement, balancing hoof stability and support with ‘give’.”

It is wise to remember that the “perfect” surface arguably does not exist and that maintenance will always be key.

“Everybody wants a surface that you don’t have to maintain, that doesn’t freeze in winter or need watering in summer,” adds Ross. “You can’t have a very low maintenance surface without giving up something else — usually performance.”

5. Planning permission

Most arena installation companies offer a “turn key” solution that includes handling the process for you. However, if you are going it alone, it’s useful to be aware of the issues that are most likely to concern your county council. The planning permission process can take up to three months.

“For equestrian builds, it’s worth contacting your local planning authority before doing anything else. They can tell you what is more likely to be acceptable,” says Gill Davies from Martin Collins.

One of the most common areas of compromise is lighting, which can pose aesthetic considerations as well as troubling neighbours.

“When siting an arena, it’s worth considering if there is traffic passing on a nearby highway that might prevent you installing lighting,” says Charles.

Modern LED lights mounted on the fencing rather than a pole can provide a work-around.

The location of drains is also important.

“Some councils want to know where the outfall is — it may be going into a ditch adjacent to a road or impacting a neighbour’s land,” says Ross.

When building in an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB), aesthetic considerations can be of high importance.

“We currently have a build in Malvern where the client wanted light coloured sand but the council wanted the surface toned down,” says Ross.

“They didn’t want bright white in the middle of a green field. We managed to source sand from a different region — it was still silica sand but darker.”

6. Finishing touches

Fences

If you are installing the fencing yourself, do the job properly to ensure longevity.

“We always concrete the fencing in because if you don’t, within a couple of years it will bow out and look horrible,” explains Ross. “We also re-treat the bottom of our fence posts with bitumin before putting them in the ground.”

Ross also advises not skimping on kickboards.

“We have stone that comes under the kickboard as they are more likely to rot in contact with soil. You need a height of 13-15in of timber to prevent surface loss,” he adds.

Charles Britton cautions against pitting budget against safety.

“Fence height is important — a flimsy fence that is too low can actually be a danger. We

recommend 4ft 6in above the top of the riding surface, which is about 5ft 6in out of the ground,” he says.

Gates

If you want to practise dressage test riding, a central entrance on a kickboard arena might be the option for you. Otherwise, Ross advises that gates are best located offset or in the middle of a long side.

“We will never put a gate on the centre line. If a gate is left open, a naughty horse on the centre line will be out of the gate and gone. We also try not to put them in a corner for the same reason,” he says.

Mirrors

Universal advice for installing mirrors is that in order to avoid glare, you should check the direction of the sun at the time of day when you are most likely to be riding.

They should be angled towards the ground and attached to a framework rather than directly to fencing.

7. The cost

Unsurprisingly a number of factors will impact the cost, but as an example, Jackson Arenas quotes £19,500 plus VAT for a “budget” arena.

Most arena installation companies strongly caution against cutting corners, as many lower-cost fixes will only shorten the lifespan of the arena or take additional expense to remedy later on.

For those on a tight budget, there are some areas where you might make savings.

“Cut your size, not your budget,” suggests Charles.

“If you want a big arena but can’t afford it yet, and it is a site requiring cut and fill, have it levelled ready for a big arena and extend later.”

James Alford believes some savings can be made on the finishing details.

“The only place where you can really save money is fencing,” he says. “Sometimes it’s an option to use round machine posts, which are quicker to put in. A fence isn’t essential — you could just have kickboards.”

While it is better to install your chosen arena surface from the beginning — as taking up and replacing a surface results in added costs later on — if you are building on a budget, having a long-term plan to upgrade is a possibility.

“It might be worth putting up with a surface that isn’t your first choice for a couple of years,” advises Ross. “If you buy good quality angular silica sand to begin with, surfaces can be improved with the right fibre.”

Before installing floodlights in your riding arena or yard, you will need to submit a planning application to your local authority — and it’s not always a simple process. The individual case for lighting an arena has to be very well made, says Lottie Butler...

“Lighting is always the most controversial part of the planning permisson process,” says Bruce Clark, director of construction company Elmtree Equestrian.

“It’s usually due to light pollution — people in the countryside will always worry it will look like a football pitch. You really need to do your research, and make sure you get a good design that shows you will be containing the light.”

What does the planning application involve?

“To secure planning permission, you need to submit a full planning application form, a site location that allows the officers to identify where your property is, a layout plan showing exactly where the lights will be positioned around the arena and a cross section of the posts and lights proposed, all of these to suitable scales,” says Linda Wright, co-director of Charles Britton Equestrian Construction.

“We would also offer a light diagram including predicted light spillage outside of the arena, technical information about the sort of light proposed and a Design and Access Statement, in which it is explained why the lights are required and the likely operation times.”

What should I consider before applying?

Environmental factors

Acknowledging environmental factors in your application is important. It does not necessarily mean refusal, but mitigating steps may be necessary. For example, consider whether there are bats or other animals that could be affected by the lighting. “If you have trees and old buildings at the property, it is very likely you will need to have a suitably licenced independent party carry out a bat survey,” advises Linda.

Your neighbours

It is always worth discussing plans with your neighbours. A planning application can only be refused for valid planning reasons, but consulting those near you in advance could help deflect any formal objections. Be sure to let them know how much you will be using the lights.

“In reality, lights are only going to be needed for a very small portion of the year, and for a small number of hours within that time of the year — no one will choose to work under lights if they can possibly avoid it,” says Linda. “Hence, they are not really the intrusion that non-riding neighbours sometimes tend to assume.”

The type of lights

Consider carefully how much light you will need and don’t be tempted to overlight. The level of lighting required very much depends on what activity is intended — there’s one level of lighting for private flat work, another for commercial jumping and everything between.

“Sodium and white metal halide have been very common lights in the past, but LED lighting is improving rapidly,” says Linda. “The initial installation cost is significantly more expensive, but it is much cheaper to run.”

An alternative for those who will only be doing flatwork is to use low-level lights — an option that may please the neighbours. Note that, whatever lighting you opt for, all have to be properly rated, weatherproof fittings.

The style of posts

“The cheapest posts to use are scaffold poles, but these won’t accommodate anything but a simple single lap and can bend in the wind,” says Linda. “Other options include telegraph posts and purpose-made lamp stands, which come in all shapes and sizes.”

All posts must be well secured, which often means concreted into the floor. It’s a job to consider undertaking when you actually build the arena. Similarly, it is also worth thinking about the colour of the posts and trying to make them blend in to the backdrop — “grey against the sky and green against the trees are the most common options,” advises Linda.

Are there any alternatives?

If it is the physical appearance of the lighting that causes a problem, there are varieties of fold-down and wind-down poles. While they might be hard work to put up and down every time you want to ride, they can be a good negotiating point if needed. Similarly, if planning permission is refused, these type of lights can be a good option.

Be aware that a full survey for planning permission can only be carried out at certain times of the year. If you want lights for next winter, now would be a good time to start the application.

Riders at this summer’s Royal Highland Show are to benefit from an “Olympic-standard” surface in a new upgraded ring.

Organisers, the Royal Highland & Agricultural Society of Scotland (RHASS) has confirmed a £500,000 investment to upgrade its equestrian ring —ring 6 — to Olympic standard in time for this year’s show in June (18-21).

Around 3,000 horses take part at the Royal Highland Show, held at the Royal Highland Centre, Ingliston, Edinburgh, and organisers hope the investment will attract “the finest riders” to the show.

The all-weather arena and Equaflow water capture system, supplied by Andrews Bowen, aims to provide a “quality jumping surface whatever the weather”.

The surface will use a similar “crate” drainage system to that used at Greenwich for London 2012 and that racehorse trainer Dan Skelton has at his Warwickshire yard.

Work will take around six weeks

At the show, showjumping classes including the International Stairway, grade C, Foxhunter and grade A and B class will all take place in the ring as well as all the working hunters and the Retraining of Racehorse classes.

“The investment in a new all-weather surface will enhance the show’s reputation in the eyes of equestrian exhibitors, visitors and trade stand holders alike,” said RHASS director and RHS showjumping chief steward, Anne Logan.

“It will provide a wonderful facility for all equestrian disciplines in Scotland, but most importantly, it will ensure that the Royal Highland Show remains at the very forefront of top end county showjumping for years to come.“

The show’s course designer, Mark McGowan, said it was “fantastic news”.

“RHASS’ forward-thinking ensures that horses from every discipline are guaranteed the best footing from start to finish, not only for the 2015 show, but for many years to come,” he said.

RHASS chairman, Willie Gill, said: “This decision to install such a state-of-the-art jumping surface is a reflection of the Society’s support of equestrianism in Scotland.

“Our motivation is clear: to protect the reputation and sustainability of Scotland’s premier equine event and showcase the finest riding talent, many of whom are homegrown.”

The new ring will also be used for the Scottish Foxhunter second round at the Scottish Summer Extravaganza Show (17-19 July) and the Scottish Horse Show (21 July).

It will also be available to hire for other events.

Local residents are protesting against a new equestrian centre in Hampshire claiming that its manège lights are causing “light pollution”.

Claire Steel, who set up Blackwater Equestrian in Wellow with her father, argues that the lighting is necessary and that they are switched off at 8.30pm.

“While our professional riders are able to ride during the day, most of our amateur clients work commitments mean that they need to have access to the yard during the early evening,” Ms Steel said.

“This, of course, would not be a problem for some two thirds of the year but during the winter months the arena needs lighting and we have eight removable low level lights.

“We fully understand that this is a sensitive area and we have not sought planning permission for all night security lighting,” she said.

Livery Lucienne Elms, who events to three-star level, also agrees that the lights are “a necessity.”

“You cannot train horses to an international level without a decent school and lights. It’s ridiculous to have a facility like this without the ability to use the lights,” she told H&H.

Local resident Paul Feeney argues the light produced from the centre, which opened in December, is “unacceptable”.

He is now mounting a campaign to get local planning bosses to turn down retrospective planning permission for the lights and other modifications to the stables.

“This eyesore is blighting the lives of all those living around it with 24-hour daylight,” he told local press.

“I urge everyone to sign a petition to ensure that the owners are forced to comply with the permission granted and not allowed to cynically apply for retrospective permission to keep the illegal building work already completed.”

Ms Steel argues that the complaints are only coming from a “couple of neighbours who don’t like change”.

Test Valley borough council will decide on the retrospective planning application for the lights and extra isolation stables on 18 April.

Plenty of private manèges are hired out on a casual basis, with users leaving a fiver in a box at the gate. It’s just a bit of extra cash, and the idea of licences and insurance is off the radar. But is that wise?

Lottie Goldstone, equine law specialist at Harrison Clark Rickerbys, says: “Anyone can hire out their school, but it is rife with litigious risk.”

Cover all eventualities

Whether on a large or small scale, Lottie strongly advises having a licence in place for each user that covers all eventualities.

“This protects the landlord and provides the user with an element of security, as well as ensuring the school is in a suitable state,” she says.

“The licence would specify the parties, payment procedure, booking criteria, hours of usage, damage to school or jumps and exclusion of the Occupiers’ Liability Act.

“There is also a common law duty of care, which needs to be addressed.”

Lottie recommends using a solicitor to draft the licence and agreeing a fee upfront.

“Stay clear of online templates, as these are too general to give the landlord any protection,” she says. “Once the licence is drafted, you can insert a new name on each licence per user.

“I would suggest emailing it to the new user for them to read through, sign and bring with them the first time. Then they would be free to use the school under the agreed terms without signing each time. The landlord should keep a copy — a scan is fine.”

Protect yourself

Lottie says insurance is essential to protect the landlord in the case of any negligence claims. Anyone teaching in the school should also have their own insurance.

Anna Goodley, account executive at Lycetts insurance broker, emphasises that even between friends, appropriate cover should be in place.

“If a pothole in the school causes your friend to fall and become paralysed, they could sue you for damages,” she said.

“And when someone makes a spurious claim, you need the financial protection to defend yourself.”

Anna advises first approaching your household insurer.

“They may extend to cover for ‘hiring the school for reward’ at no extra cost if it’s just a fiver here and there,” she says.

“If it’s on a bigger scale, you would need a stand-alone policy — which I would estimate at around £250 per year.”

Owners need to assess whether they would be earning enough to justify the cost of insurance and licensing.

But if the school is being used more than twice a week at £5 a time, you could start to make a profit. Just bear in mind the extra labour and cost entailed in maintenance due to increased usage.

This all assumes that you’re looking to hire out the school on a small scale, but if it’s on a more serious basis — for competitions or as a riding school — then you need to discuss with your local authority.

You should also check that your original planning approval permits the commercial use you require.

An all-weather arena dedicated to research has been opened at the Royal Agricultural University (RAU, previously known as the Royal Agricultural College), near Cirencester, Gloucestershire.

The 60m X 30m Martin Collins Ecotrack manege will be used for curriculum topics such as gait analysis, research into causes of lameness and to provide a safe environment for equine behavioural studies.

Students and other liveries will be able to use the facility, but unlike other colleges, the RAU will not be using it intensively for shows or competitions.

RAU principal, Professor Chris Gaskell, said: “The RAU is very pleased to be working with Martin Collins; the high quality arena we now have is a mark of the leadership we both provide in the equine world, and we look forward to working together in the future.”

Martin Collins added: “Research and development has been integral to the growth of our company throughout the 35 years we have been in business. The new arena further emphasises our commitment to this, giving us the chance to both assist with and benefit from the academic excellence associated with the RAU.”

The varied uses of the arena were demonstrated at the opening. Event rider Michael Jackson gave a performance of flatwork and equine lecturer Dr Andrew Hemmings showed how the arena will be used in future for research, with an equine behaviour demonstration.

Fancy resurfacing your arena or gallops with an Olympic-grade surface or Polytrak? Then bargains may be had – but you need to move fast.

The 10,000tonnes of Andrews Bowen surface used during the Olympics at Greenwich is being sold off after the Games.

And Lingfield racecourse is selling off its Martin Collins surface in September.

Andrews Bowen and Lingfield say they have had a large number of enquiries already, so anyone hoping to invest needs to be quick.

Speaking before the first day of the equestrian competition at Greenwich, David Andrews of Andrews Bowen said: “We have two surfaces at Greenwich, our Prowax surface and the 2012, which we developed for the Games and have used in the main arena.

“We have had a lot of interest from people who want to buy what will be an almost brand-new surface, but some is left.”

Both surfaces will cost £100 per tonne second-hand.

The 2012 surface – which FEI expert Professor Lars Roepstorff described as the “most consistent” he has ever tested – will be added to the Andrews Bowen range.

Mr Andrews said he was not concerned that selling the second-hand surface would have an impact on new orders.

The other used surface on the market is 9,000tonnes of Martin Collins Polytrak installed at Lingfield Park in 2001.

The all-weather track is getting a new Polytrak surface – costing around £3million – so the 11-year-old track, which could also be used in an arena, is being sold off.

Lingfield spokesman Kate Hills said: “A significant portion will be used on gallops and schools locally, but we are still looking for buyers for the remainder.”

She said it will cost around £40 plus vat per tonne, with discounts for quantity.

“The surface is still in super condition,” added Ms Hills.

Martin Collins said: “We were obviously aware that there would be an increase in second-hand material on the market around September.

“However, new sales don’t appear to be adversely affected. We have increased production at our Lambourn and Cheshire plants to meet demand.”

The arena surface at Greenwich has been given the thumbs-up by International Equestrian Federation (FEI) this morning.

Sports director for the organisers, LOCOG, Debbie Jevans said: “With support from the FEI, the contractors and our own team have done a great job to get the make-up of the surface right, and we now believe this will be a world class surface for the equestrian athletes in a stunning Olympic venue.”

The surface for the test event last summer caused some complaints from riders, with showjumpers describing it as “puddingy”.

The specification of the surface was changed and an assessment recently took place on the main arena, involving two high-level competition horses that worked on the surface and jumped fences.

LOCOG said the surface, a mixture of sand and fibre, has been further improved by the addition of a binder.

Approximately 8500 tonnes of surface will be used at Greenwich Park.

Lars Roepstorff, professor in equine functional anatomy at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, has also assessed the surface.

Mr Roepstorff is carrying out research on the properties of equestrian surfaces around the world as part of a long-term scientific footing study for the FEI.

He measured properties including surface firmness, elasticity and the dampening capacity of the footing and grip.

He considers the London 2012 footing to be among the best and particularly the most consistent that he has worked on, a view supported by attending FEI representatives.

FEI secretary-general Ingmar De Vos, who was also present at the assessment, said: “It is the first time that there has been such a scientific approach to footing and hopefully this will be part of the long-term legacy.

“It helps us to determine the parameters that can be used in the future to establish scientifically approved criteria for optimal footing.”

He said the cross-country course is also unaffected by the recent wet weather.

When building an arena, choosing the right surface is vital. Here is a summary of some of the most common surfaces available and what they are pros and cons of each

Wood chip and fibre chip

Wood fibre is produced especially for equestrian surfaces and usually consists of smaller particles, whereas wood chip can be anything out of a timber merchant’s chipper. The particle size of wood chip is important. If the pieces are too large it will not settle and can become lodged in hooves; if the pieces are too small and lightweight they may blow around in the wind. Wood-based surfaces are eco-friendly if not treated with chemicals or colourings. Recycled wood, however, should be treated with caution since it could contain old nails, wire or staples from a previous life as a kitchen unit, door, window frame or pallet. Don’t be tempted to do a DIY job. Cheap timber offcuts will break down quickly, can block drainage, splinter or become slippery. A wood-based surface is less prone to freezing than sand, depending on the quality of wood and bark content. A surface that doesn’t contain bark will last longer and will not absorb as much water.

Best for: wood chip and wood fibre can be used for indoor or outdoor arenas as well as other equestrian surfaces — gallops, lungeing rings, turn-out paddocks and horse-walkers. They are also suitable for all disciplines.

What you should know: of all the arena surfaces, wood chip and wood fibre are the least durable and have the shortest lifespan. Another disadvantage of wood chip is that it can become slippery when it dries out, so it needs regular watering. If the drainage conditions are not good, the arena can also become waterlogged.

Life expectancy: a good quality wood fibre outdoor arena, given correct maintenance, should have a life expectancy of between four and 10 years, depending on usage. In a busy riding school the surface would not be expected to last more than eight years. Wood chip has a similar life expectancy, depending on the type of wood. However, it is not necessary to buy a new surface every few years; a top-up layer can be added.

Rubber chips

A longer lasting alternative to wood chip or fibre is small pieces of rubber chip. A rubber-based surface requires less maintenance, and is less likely to become waterlogged or dry out. A big advantage of rubber surfaces is that they do not freeze: frozen arenas can be a major problem for owners, who often want to ride early on winter mornings and could lose valuable riding time for days. Rubber is dust-free and is unlikely to blow around in a strong wind. But while it’s good for outdoor arenas it is not generally recommended for indoor use. In hot summers, the surface can heat up, producing an unwelcome odour. The most important point about rubber surfaces is they cannot be used entirely on their own. They need a base, and sand, ideally silica sand, is best. Finally, rubber is probably the most comfortable surface to fall off on to.

Best for: outdoor arenas, particularly for jumping, since it is less likely to result in skidding when horses land or concussion injuries.

What you should know: if you want to change your arena surface in the future, rubber is not biodegradable and may be expensive to get rid of.

Life expectancy: pretty much indestructible if maintained according to manufacturers’ guidelines, such as keeping the surface levelled.

Sand and sand mixes

Sand was traditionally very popular, but nowadays more people are using a combination, such as sand with a topping of rubber or a sand-mixed product. Sand used for arenas is silica sand, which is natural but more durable than most. Europe is leading the field in developing new sand mixes and UK companies have picked up on the trend for more equine friendly substances. Among the latest products are those that mimic the binding ability of topsoil to improve the surface quality and minimise kickback. Horses can travel on top of this type of surface rather than moving through it.

Best for: good for galloping. Many all-weather racetracks are sand-based.

What you should know: sand starts the “emery board effect” as soon as it is laid, with the natural process of grinding against itself. Through the action of hooves, it gradually gets finer, becoming progressively deeper. Also, sand alone is not an all-weather surface and can freeze in winter. If your surface is unwaxed, it will need to be watered during dry weather for optimum performance.

Life expectancy: usually a minimum of five years.

Price range: you could cover a 20x40m arena with silica sand for a few hundred pounds.

Waxed surfaces and coatings

Surfaces that have been treated with a wax coating, usually sand mixed with synthetic fibres, have particles that bind together more effectively and there is less surface movement. They need less maintenance than their unwaxed counterparts.

The more sophisticated products have been developed to emulate turf as closely as possible, allowing for “bounce” and absorption of impact.

Securing planning permission for a new arena or stables could get harder under the government’s Localism Bill.

The bill, which is expected to be passed later this year, will fundamentally change the planning process and give communities a greater say in the development of their area.

And neighbourhood plans — where new developments can be voted on by locals — could be introduced from 2012.

“Giving more people a greater say will offer those people a chance to say no without considering the importance of an application,” said Country Land and Business Association planning specialist Fenella Collins.

She advised those in rural communities to get involved if a neighbourhood plan is proposed in their area.

But one H&H reader, who asked not to be named, said she would welcome the chance to get involved in equestrian development policy.

“We have nine manèges within one mile of us, and an array of stables, tatty containers, caravans and muck heaps — it is ruining the local area.

“We need a new approach that gives consideration to local people.”

Andy Woodward, of Equine Design planning consultants, said it was too early to tell whether the new rules would impede equestrian development.

“There might be an issue in areas with an existing high volume of equestrian developments and, frankly, there’s good reason then for the planning process to be tough,” said Mr Woodward.

Malvern Showground, home of the Three Counties Agricultural Society (TCAS), has added an Olympic size arena to its facilities.

The new Ledbury Ring, which replaces the old Ring 5 at the Worcestershire venue, measures 6,500 sq m and is the largest of its kind in the region.

The showground also has four grass rings, 240 permanent stables, a lunging ring and a warm-up area.

Sharon Gilbert of TCAS said: “The Malvern Showground is becoming known as the best equine venue in the area, and we are keen to maintain that reputation, by continually investing in, and developing our facilities.

“Ring 5 was previously separate from our other competition rings, and not very convenient.

“We decided to open up more land at the back of our stables, to create a bigger and better arena.”

The first equestrians to benefit from the new facility will be those competing at the Three Counties Show (17-19 June).

The 2011 Three Counties Show will host in excess of 250 classes and several HOYS qualifiers, including the Cuddy Supreme In-Hand, and is set to attract around 2,800 entries — one of the highest tallies on the show circuit.

Equestrian surface manufacturer Softrack Surfaces is under new ownership.

Hugh Daly, who owns Oxfordshire-based building company Equibuild, took over the company in September, from founder Robert Brazil.

He says the first three weeks of business have yielded orders for 3,000 tonnes of Softrack Surfaces.

“Softrack is still in business and should be your first port of call if you have one of the company’s surfaces,” said Mr Daly.

He said previous problems, which led to surfaces failing, had been resolved.

A dressage rider plans to appeal after being told she must pay almost £2,000 in rates on her manège.

Carole Stewart, who lives near Burley in the New Forest, was surprised when the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) — part of HM Revenue and Customs — said she must pay a £1,200 annual levy on her 60x20m sand school.

This has been reduced to £280 a year, but backdated five years, so she must pay nearly £1,800 within the month.

“The VOA contacted me out of the blue. The arena is 36m from the house, falls within the curtilage of the property and is for my use alone,” she said.

Mrs Stewart asked the VOA officer for evidence of other manège users being charged and was told that commercial arenas were already subject to the levy, but she was to be the first private user. She was told the VOA is looking at four more properties in Hampshire.

She added:“If we don’t win the VOA will be able to demand rates on every other manège in the country.”

“The implications are huge, I know of 10 private arenas in this village alone.”

A VOA spokesman said: “Manèges, whether used as part of stables or separately, are liable for business rates unless occupied as part of the domestic use of the house and included in council tax.”

If a ratepayer is unhappy, they can appeal to the local valuation officer and then a valuation tribunal.

David Parker of estate agents Savills said: “If a yard adjoining a residential property is close to the accommodation, shares access and is not run as a business, there is a strong argument to say it should be incorporated within the council tax assessment of the home.”

Speaking on behalf of the British Horse Society, surveyor Dominic Knollys added: “The VOA should not discriminate between equestrian facilities and other facilities, such as pools or tennis courts.”

Q: I am finally in a position to have a sand school, but need to do so on a budget. What are my best options?

Unfortunately, arena experts agree that there are no short cuts. The best way to save money in the long term is to have the original work done properly using the best materials you can afford.

Jonathan Leam of Maple Arenas advises: “We see people time and time again trying to save money using bad sands or recycled stone.”

He recommends that you start with a basic sand arena, to which you can add a different surface product in the years to come and Joanne Dawson of Equestrian Direct agrees.

“We would recommend that you purchase the best grade of sand with the highest amount of silica content that your budget allows.

“This will ensure good compaction and a consistent ride,” she says.

Hickstead’s International Arena is to undergo improvement work this summer.

The venue has appointed turfgrass experts Sports Turf Research to monitor the arena over the next two months to measure factors including hardness, traction, drainage, grass cover and hoof penetration.

Last year the venue was criticised when the footing failed to hold up after severe weather conditions.

All drainage and irrigation systems will be updated and the new turf will be grown from seed, to improve strength and durability.

Zara Phillips has recently installed the first outdoor manege at Gatcombe Park.

The world three-day event champion chose a Martin Collins Enterprises (MCE) Ecotrack arena, like the one used at the European show jumping and dressage championships at Windsor last year.

Zara said: “My father has a Martin Collins surface and I have jumped on it many times,” said Zara. “I like the way it gives but does not move under the hoof, which gives a lot of confidence and security.

“I have heard showjumpers say that Ecotrack gives you a bit more ‘jump’ — let’s hope my horses feel the effects!

“The horses love the new manege and already I have seen a difference in their outlook, by not being hemmed in by the walls of the school.”

Zara Phillips has recently taken delivery of a Martin Collins Enterprises (MCE) Ecotrack arena. This is the first outdoor manege at Gatcombe Park.

The world three-day event champion joins a long list of MCE customers including her father Captain Mark Phillips, showjumpers Michael and William Whitaker, Rodrigo Pessoa and Ben Maher, and dressage rider Emile Faurie.

The wax-coated Ecotrack was used at the European show jumping and dressage championships at Windsor last year.

Zara selected Ecotrack for her own dual-purpose use and has learned how to create optimum conditions for both disciplines using a purpose-made Martin Collins arena-master maintenance machine.

Equestrian surface supplier Martin Collins International is heading for a High Court showdown with one of its former employees, Christopher Perks.

Mr Perks, who earned £80,000 a year when he joined as finance, strategy and operations manager in 2003, is demanding payment of a termination bonus of £169,822.

Martin Collins’ surfaces are considered by many to be among the best and are used by top names including National Hunt trainer Paul Nicholls and show jumpers David Broome and Billy Twomey, as well as major equestrian events such as the European dressage and show jumping championships at Windsor in 2009.

Mr Perks claims in a High Court writ that he became increasingly dissatisfied at his treatment by the company and proprietor Martin Collins and resigned as a company director in January 2009.

Mr Perks says he resigned as an employee in April and accuses the company of breach of contract by failing to pay his termination bonus and his annual bonus based on pre-tax profits.

Martin Collins, who lives at Tarlton, Glos, had guaranteed that his company would meet its obligations towards Perks, but failed to do so, it is alleged.

Neither Mr Collins nor Mr Perks wished to comment.

A date has yet to be set for the hearing.

Forest Edge Arena, near Swaffham in Norfolk, is investing in its indoor and outdoor arenas to provide riders in East Anglia with an improved competition experience.

The peat-based surface in the 75 x 35m indoor arena is being upgraded to a new Andrews Bowen Pro-wax surface, while the addition of a new outdoor surfaced practice arena will enable the venue to hold long-arena dressage competitions and make the most of its large indoor arena for show jumping shows for the first time.

Owner Penny Garrett explains: “We want Forest Edge to be a credible and professional venue that can host competitions at the highest level, so we are investing the time, money and effort to make it happen.”

The new indoor surface is being installed on 27 July, while work on the outdoor practise arena will begin in the next couple of weeks.

“In the past we have had to use a section of the indoor arena as a warm-up and collecting ring, where as the new outdoor warm-up will allow us to use the whole of the indoor arena for competition,” continues Penny.

The centre also has two new fenced grass arenas, with a purpose-built grass arena, incorporating a Derby bank and water jump, due to be added next year.

Other recent developments include a new café, seating up to 60; a new snug area with woodburner and leather sofas, overlooking the indoor arena; and electric hook-up points and new showers for those wishing to stay overnight.

A £500,000 all-weather arena is being built at Windsor in time for both the May show and the European Jumping and Dressage Championships in the summer (25-30 August).

The 68x80m Ecotrack arena will make Windsor “as weather-proof as it can be”, said event director Simon Brooks-Ward.

“We want the European Jumping and Dressage Championships to be a formidable, world-class event,” he said. “We needed a new arena to achieve this goal.”

Work began earlier this month and will be complete for the Royal Windsor Show (13-17 May).

The new arena will sit next to the existing all-weather main ring, and the two will hold around 70% of competition at the show.

The ground at Windsor faced criticism in 2005 after horses appeared lame while in the ring.

Mr Brooks-Ward said: “The improvements are good news for all competitors.”

Q: Can you tell me why the standard A, K, E, H, C, M, B, and F markers are used in a dressage arena?

NB, Essex

While dressage is thought to have been practised for hundreds of years, arena markers were not introduced formally into competition until the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, using a 60x20m arena.

Although there are several theories regarding the origins of the arena letters, including that they represent the initials of horses in the stable yard of the 17th century’s first Duke of Newcastle, William Cavendish, the most common theory is that the letters date back to the 18th-century kingdom of Prussia.

At this time, stable grooms at the Imperial Palace are said to have waited for their masters with their equine charges next to the letter that related to their master’s position or role, in German; for example, K for kaiser or king, R for ritter or knight, F for fürst or prince, and so on.

Various information sources are able to suggest sufficient German dignitary titles for the letters K, E, H, M, B, F, although it appears that the centre line letters, A, X and C, are absent.

There is no definitive answer as to why these centre line letters were introduced, other than to fill the gaps!

For standard-sized arenas, four further letters are used around the outside of the arena; V, S, R and P; and D, L, X, I and G are used down the centre line.

Again, there is no concrete answer as to why these letters were selected, although one theory is that they were introduced by 20th-century German cavalry officers.

Q: At the livery yard where I keep my horse we have an arena with a five-year-old silica sand and rubber surface. The drains have been down for 15 years.

The arena used to be usable all year, but recently soft patches have started to appear, which become holes when a horse treads on them. Do we just need a top-up of sand? Or is the problem likely to be the drainage? What would you recommend to improve the surface?

A: We spoke to two arena experts, who both agreed that, although it is difficult to give a precise answer without seeing the arena, your first step should be to check the school is draining properly.

“It sounds like the surface is becoming waterlogged, which leads to soft patches initially and eventually to the whole surface flooding,” says David Lovatt Smith, who has been the British Horse Society’s independent expert on arenas for the past 20 years.

“It becomes soft and deep to ride in because an excess of water acts as a lubricant and the particles of sand become like quicksand. It is probably caused by the drainage system underneath the riding surface becoming blocked or clogged and this will require the removal of the sand and the testing of the drains.

“More drains may have to be inserted or even an entire new drainage bed. If the sand is still serviceable, it may be re-used.”

Ross Jackson of Jackson Arenas explains how to check if the school is draining: “During the next rains, find the run-off drainage pipe and check that water is coming out.

“Next, scrape the surface back from over the problem area, pour a bucket of water on to the base and see if it drains; if the water doesn’t drain away it’s likely that the drainage layer is failing.

“As this arena has drained long-term, the problem is likely to be damaged membrane. Take back the stone base to expose the base membrane. This membrane keeps the drainage layer separate from the soil — particularly vital if you’re in a clay area. If the membrane is damaged and clay is oozing through, dig out the clay, lay new geotextile membrane, overlapping the existing good membrane and down into the dip, and fill back up to base level with stone.

“Occasionally a surface can hold water if it is very worn and has become compacted; another cause is a high organic content in the surface, caused by droppings being worked into it.

“To keep your arena draining to its best possible capacity, avoid turning horses out on the manège, as they can dig down and damage the base, pick up droppings immediately, rake the surface, although in hot weather only level the surface, as harrowing it will dry it out more quickly — and keep run-off pipes clear.”

Q: Please can you tell me how to go about installing a manege at home? I need one for schooling my 15.2hh horse, although not for jumping. Please could you tell me what is the best type of surface to use?

Yard manager Kate Skirrow replies: Installing an outdoor riding arena is a very exciting project, and there are many considerations to take into account when deciding on its design.

The standard size for a manege is 20mx40m, but this may vary depending upon the amount of land and money you have at your disposal.

I suggest you contact a selection of specialists in building arenas, many of whom advertise in the equestrian press. They will be able to provide you with quotes and offer specific advice.

Consider the following points:

• Planning permission will be needed and this may or may not extend to floodlighting, depending on your needs.
• A good drainage system is vital, as water lying on the surface can turn your arena into an ice rink in cold weather. The aim is to ensure that water flows around your arena and that any water landing on it can drain away quickly. A specialist can advise you on drainage.
• There are many types of surface to choose from including sand, woodfibre, rubber and wax-coated surfaces. Some people use a combination, such as sand with a rubber topping. Prices do vary and your budget may limit your choice, but try to choose a surface that doesn’t freeze. Bear in mind that a surface of sand alone will freeze when wet.
• Don’t forget to find out how to maintain your chosen surface, as the purchase of a levelling device must be included in your total budget.
• Finally, when you contact the arena specialists, ask for a list of local arenas they have built, and go and see them for yourself. Often, the best advice comes from people who have already gone through the experience.
