Mountain Horse Aurora long riding boots

If you are after long riding boots that fit well without shelling out for bespoke, the Mountain Horse Aurora Tall Boots may be the answer.

This smart-looking boot comes in a range of leg sizes besides the usual foot size. As well as regular/regular, you can opt for short, wide, narrow and extra narrow alternatives. It is quite rare to slip on a new boot and to find it fits like the proverbial glove – or sock – but I am an average size 8–10, with size 40 feet and the regular/regular 40 is almost spot-on. They are a touch loose on the upper calf, so I’d consider the narrow option were it not for the fact that round the ankle they are perfect. I’d always opt for slightly loose than too tight, and the slight gap doesn’t affect my leg position in the saddle, nor is it annoying walking around. However the elasticated panelling means that it makes sense to opt for the tighter fit because there is some give.

I have wide feet, and they didn’t feel squished at all, while the ankle is snug but very forgiving thanks to the elastic lacing. They also have elasticated panels for further give, which all helps ensure a great fit when the boots are not made to measure.

Mountain Horse Aurora Tall Boots: comfort and flexibility

As with all new boots, they do feel a little stiff when you first put them on. However, I quickly forgot about this once on the horse. I found they helped me to keep my lower leg in a good position, which is a definite bonus. The zip goes down the calf all the way from the back of the knee to the heel, and makes it easy to slide in the foot, and then zip yourself in, with a securing popper at the top.

They have a strongly curved top, which covers the side of the knee. I was concerned this would affect my flexibility and ability to bend the knee. However, I tried them out on the gallops with short stirrups and they didn’t cut into the back of the knee at all, and were extremely comfortable. The (fixed) elastic lacing on the front of the ankle makes it easy to flex the foot and keep your heels down!

With the advanced Vertycore 4D shock impact reduction technology in the sole, as well as a good grip, they were really comfy to wear around the yard too.

Smart and stylish

Looks-wise, this is a smart boot. I like the slight heel, as it gives a bit of extra length to the leg. They are made of full-grain leather, with a nice shine. They are easy to keep in good shape as well, because they come with inflatable trees.

Mountain Horse Aurora Paddock Boots

I loved these short boots! They were comfortable from the outset. Perhaps they feel a little stiff when you first put them on, but that is due to the quality of the leather. The zip and elasticated sides make them quick to slip on and off, and they work well with a pair of chaps for riding. Overall, they give an elegant appearance, and I’d be happy pairing them with some smart half-chaps for a clinic or grassroots show.

They are made from full-grain leather upper, with Vertycore insole and outsole. This is designed to provide “exceptional cushioning and comfort”, and I did find them extremely comfortable on the ground while dashing about the yard.

For me, this is a very smart look for a yard boot, so I would favour them for riding rather than mucking out, although they feel sturdy enough to do both jobs. They have pretty detailing around the toe area, which implies they are more aesthetic than a work boot.

However, the chunky rubber sole really does provide cushioning and feels like it would stand up to hours walking around, and is also comfortable for those who are on their feet on the yard all day long.

I haven’t tried them in the rain, but like any product made from leather, they would need protection and maintenance to keep that lovely, glossy look. Again, the rubber sole gives some protection against wet ground and muck.

They have a robust feel, very supportive around the ankle, and also in case of the horse stepping on your toe.

While the boot is sturdy, it is sufficiently narrow to be perfectly fine slipping into a stirrup, with no concerns about the width. Some yard boots are too chunky to be safe in the stirrup. A pair of short-chaps fits easily over the top with no stretching of the zipper.

The heel is fairly chunky – I’d go as far as to say it is slightly raised. This is ideal for those of us who are keen for a bit more height, but perhaps if you are already very tall a flatter heel may be preferable.

The Mountain Horse Aurora Paddock Boot is available in black or brown. I tried brown in a size 40 (UK 6½) and found them to be true to size.

Verdict

H&H Approved – Smart but functional and very comfortable, suitable particularly for riding but robust enough to stand up to yard chores too. An elegant short boot, which is both practical and looks great.

First impressions

These breeches looked well made and I liked the style. I also liked that the colour was slightly darker than the others in test, which I sometimes think is quite flattering.

Overview of performance

These breeches fitted very well — I was most surprised, as I thought they may be too low waisted for me, but actually they were a great fit. I expected them to be more rigid with the look of the fabric, but they were very comfortable. However, they weren’t as warm as I’d like for a winter-specific pair — more of a year-round pair. They also weren’t waterproof, which would be a really benefit in the winter months. They were breathable, did wash well and stood up to regular wear well.

I loved how well these fitted me — they were really flattering. I don’t like the seat design, but that is personal preference.

Verdict

I would recommend wearing these for eventing.

They looked very smart — particularly well made — and were flattering. I noticed they had a softshell look, which I’m not personally a fan of, but they looked more supportive than the other softshell breeches I tested.

Overview of performance

I can’t fault this pair of breeches as they kept me extremely warm and comfortable even on the longest days at competitions. They aren’t the most traditional, but definitely a pair to have in the wardrobe for all disciplines. They fitted really well and stayed looking really smart.

They are great quality and very smart. I loved how warm they were — they were very thick, and you are guaranteed to stay warm all day, without getting too hot as they are breathable. Personally, I would simplify the design on the seat as I prefer more simple-looking breeches, but they do exactly the job they are designed for — that’s more to do with my personal preference.

First impressions

They looked very well made and like they would be extremely warm. I was unsure of the style as I’m not a fan of the softshell look, but I expected this would be great in terms of performance.

Overview of performance

The breeches were comfortable and fitted fairly well but they were low-mid waisted, which isn’t always the warmest. They were also slightly short and lacked a little depth in the bottom area. However, they were by far the warmest pair I tested and no water got through — definitely water repellent and wind resistant as they claim. I did actually get a bit warm a few times, but we’ve had such a mild winter. They washed really well and looked brand new every time I wore them.

I loved how warm and fleecy they were. I wasn’t a fan of the the plasticy grippy seat as my tastes are more traditional, and I would have preferred a higher waist.

Verdict

Definitely worth getting a pair for the winter if you feel the cold.

The breeches look very hard wearing, practical and warm. Although the design looked very simple, they weren’t particularly flattering.

These breeches performed really well. They fitted nicely and were extremely comfortable. They were warm, while also being very waterproof and breathable. They washed well and looked brand new every time I wore them.

Harriet’s likes and dislikes

Performance-wise, I can’t find many faults with these breeches. They washed like new every time — they never got marked or looked tired. However, style-wise, I didn’t like the basic look as there wasn’t a seat, which would help to break them up, and it would be great if they could offer more support. For this reason, I think they would make a great pair of training or leisure breeches, but I’d be less likely to wear them for competition.

These looked really nice, but I was concerned that the material looked quite thin.

Overview of performance

These breeches offer a wonderfully high waist! They were really comfortable, but not very warm and not at all waterproof — which is not ideal for the winter. I didn’t wear these hunting due to the colour, but wore them to dressage and showjumping, where I felt they were very smart and stylish. They washed well and stayed looking smart.

Harriet’s likes and dislikes

They were quite thin and slightly see through, but I love the high waist. I wouldn’t label them as winter breeches, but I think they would be great in the summer.

Verdict

Not warm enough for winter, but otherwise a great pair of breeches.

This Pikeur long-sleeved competition shirt really is something different, and is ideal for someone who likes to add a little extra touch of glamour to their competition wear. Made from a stretchy, warm and very comfortable technical material, this long sleeved shirt also has small Pikeur wording on the chest and beautiful crystal buttons.

A very neat and tidy, smart, stylish shirt with all the quality you would expect from Pikeur.

Overview of performance

This shirt is really stretchy and comfortable and it worked really well under a competition jacket. It kept me warm, but was also breathable. It was stylish and gave a very nice appearance.

Likes and dislikes

I liked how stylish, yet practical it is. I also really liked the long sleeves and how the cuffs stayed in position, rather than working up your arms. Some of the other shirts were slightly warmer, but I never felt cold wearing this shirt. The fit was really good for riders of any shape.

It’s machine washable — knitted 95% polyester and 5% Lycra.

First impressions

The shirt felt really lovely — soft and like it would be really warm. I also really liked the style — it looked great.

Overview of performance

It kept me really warm without being bulky, and it was really comfortable, too. The stock sat really nicely and in general it fitted well, although the cuffs were too tight. It washed really well and stayed really white, which was a bonus.

Lisa’s likes and dislikes

I really liked how the shirt wasn’t bulky, but it still kept me really warm — it was so comfortable. The only downside was the tightness of the cuffs.

Verdict

I would definitely recommend this shirt to a friend if the cuffs fitted them comfortably.

I really liked the diamanté collar, but it did make it more difficult to get a stock on. The colour was also really smart, but it doesn’t go with a tweed jacket.

Verdict

I would recommend this for summer use for someone who doesn’t wear tweed.

The Horseware Sara competition shirt is made of a wicking nylon/spandex, with a lace back detail. It has Coolmax technology, as well as anti-bacterial properties, and is machine washable. It is available in a choice of long or short sleeves.

First impressions

It looked smart, comfortable, breathable and of good quality.

Overview of performance

It was warm, but the long-sleeved version would be better for winter. My stock sat really nicely on it, plus it fitted well and was really comfortable. It stayed looked white and new throughout the test.

There was nothing I disliked about it — the lace detail was nice if you like that style. I would have preferred to test the long sleeved version for winter use.

First impressions

These breeches looked really thick and hard-wearing and fitted well when tried on for the first time. They were a genuine size and I like the gel seat.

Overview of performance

I have worn these on multiple occasions in all types of winter weather and have appreciated how thick, warm and showerproof they have been. They have been very comfortable, looked very smart and have been very flattering. The light beige colour has meant that they have been suitable to wear with either a navy or tweed coat. When it was raining, the grip I had in the saddle never faltered.

Likes and dislikes

I found the four front pockets very useful with two being zipped and the other two being a jean-style pocket. I also liked how the material was warm without being too thick. Although, they were nether high waisted nor low cut, they fitted my personal shape well.

Verdict

A great pair of breeches that are very good for any type of winter weather whether you are competing in dressage, showjumping, arena eventing or going out hunting.

The Pikeur Candela Strass Breeches are high waisted with stud and crystal applications on the front pockets and the rear belt loop. First impressions

I have never wanted to splash out on these sort of breeches before, but when I put them on I realised how flattering they were compared to many others.

Overview of performance

As a winter breech they were quite thin, but they were very comfortable and really made me look good in and out of the saddle.

These breeches are so flattering and comfortable, although as a winter breech they could be a little warmer.

I liked that they are smart and stylish and that they wash well. But they aren’t ideally suited to winter use – seems to be more of a general all-round pair of breeches.

These looked to be a smart, professional pair of breeches, but they seemed quite thin for winter wear. I liked the design.

Overview of performance

Overall I like these breeches, they looked really neat and were comfortable. However, they were quite thin for wearing during the winter, so I needed to add extra layers on particularly cold days. They fitted really well around the ankle/mid calf and they didn’t ride up my legs. The waist was quite big compared to the knees (which were quite tight), so I did find myself wearing them with a belt.

Likes and dislikes

I really like the simple yet stylish design and the fact the very bottom of the breech doesn’t rise up under your boots. For a winter breech, they could have been a bit warmer. Also the dirt showed up quite easily.

Verdict

Not ideally suited for winter wear, but they were comfortable when worn with a belt.

I really like how simple this shirt looked from afar, but when you looked closely the material had a really smart pattern to it.

Overview of performance

This shirt was brilliant, absolutely brilliant. I really could not fault it, as it was lightweight, breathable and comfortable. I also appreciated the short sleeves as it meant that I could wear it without a jacket in competition. When I did wear it without jacket I felt very stylish, plus it proved very lucky as I’ve won loads while wearing it!

Likes and dislikes

I really like how cool it is to wear and that I didn’t get sweaty even on the very hot summer days. I am also a huge fan of its design and love how well it washes.

Verdict

I’d recommend this shirt for any discipline. It’s equally suitable to wear under a jacket or on its own.

Stierna’s official description:

This looked like a smart, practical shirt, but it was quite plain in design compared to the others on test.

Overview of performance:

This shirt proved lightweight, comfortable to wear and it kept me cool in hot weather. I liked that it had capped sleeves so can be worn without a jacket.

I like that this shirt is smart enough to wear at shows, while keeping me really cool.

I liked the lace on the back of the shirt as it added the style and looked as though it would keep me cool.

Overview of performance?

It has worn well, and kept me cool in the areas that sweat the most. I liked the ruffle around the chest as it meant it looked great without a stock. The shirt washed really well and looked as good as new after multiple washes.

Lisa’s likes/dislikes:

I really like the fit and how comfortable it was in the saddle, but unfortunately being sleeveless it can’t be worn without a jacket in competition due to the rules requiring sleeves.

Overview of performance?

The shirt fitted really well and I felt very stylish wearing it. It worked well with a stock, but also looked really great without one. But it doesn’t cover the shoulders and therefore can’t be worn without a jacket at competitions.

I like how stylish this shirt is and how good it looks without a stock. I just would have liked capped sleeves too.

A fitted and breathable show shirt, the Cavallo Katara Slim features gentle ruffles on the chest as well as crystal buttons for some added sparkle. It is quick drying, washable and incorporates active flex technology for a comfortable fit.

Lisa’s first impressions?

I thought this shirt looked really smart and stylish. It has a very feminine fit with the ruffles around the chest, which I thought was really flattering.

Overview of performance?

This shirt fitted well as I felt very comfortable, without being restricted, and it really flattered my shape. The bottoms of sleeves were quite tight though, and did ride up a bit. The shirt worked really well without a jacket, and also works best without a stock.

Lisa’s likes/dislikes:

I really loved the added sparkle to the buttons and collar.

Would recommend to those who want to look their best while in the saddle

The Aptos Vent Sleeveless Show Shirt is made from a lightweight poly and spandex blend pique and features a stock tie loop, show collar and placket with snap closures. Ariat’s moisture movement technology pulls moisture to the outside of the garment so it evaporates quickly and a special back vent design enables air flow to regulate the body temperature.

I liked the colour of the shirt: the grey was nice and light, and made a change from white. I also liked the design with the air vents at the back.

Overview of performance?

The shirt was lightweight and kept me cool when it was really hot. I liked how it was not too overly designed, but definitely still stylish. Unfortunately, it hasn’t got the sleeves required to wear without a jacket in competition, but it did perform well when worn under a jacket.

Lisa’s likes/dislikes about it?

I liked the colour, the overall style of the shirt, how cool it kept me and the fit. I would have liked it to have shoulder sleeves though, as during the hot months most venues let you ride without jackets if your shoulders are covered.

Verdict

I would recommend this shirt to a friend as overall it is very good.

Pikeur’s official description:

With pretty lace inset and concealed button band, the Malea Lace-front Competition Shirt has a subtle frill on the stand-up collar and has 24% elastane for superb comfort and fit.

Lisa’s first impressions?

This shirt looked nice to ride in. In navy, it was very much the darkest in colour of all the shirts I tried.

Overview of performance?

I found this shirt really comfortable and very cool in hot weather. I was however disappointed that the colour ran into the white collar on its first wash at 30 degrees. Plus the collar puckered up after washing — a real shame as otherwise this shirt performed really well.

Lisa’s likes/dislikes:

I liked how nice and comfortable this shirt was to wear, but found it a shame that the collar was affected after a wash.

Verdict

Slightly too pretty for myself as an event rider, but would suit a stylish dressage diva that doesn’t mind hand washing!

First impressions

These looked very smart and fit extremely well. The leather and design looked like it would be hard wearing and they didn’t look bulky when worn.

Overview of performance

I received so many comments on how smart these chaps look while in the saddle. Not only were they extremely comfortable while riding, but also were great for doing yard work off the horse. They proved to be very tough and hard wearing plus they maintained their fit while being worn everyday. Although they are on the more expensive side, they are worth the investment.

Likes and dislikes

I really like the leather they are made out of as it looks very stylish, is soft but also so tough and hardwearing, plus didn’t need any wearing in.

Verdict

I would highly recommend these chaps. Many people who have seen me in them are planning to buy them.

First impressions

They slipped on really well first time, while being snug and flattering on my calf. The material looked really easy to clean, hard wearing and flexible.

Overview of performance

These half chaps were very lightweight and breathable – so much so that you barely felt like you had them on. The zip stayed securely fastened while riding and they didn’t pinch or rub at all. They were very breathable so my legs didn’t get sweaty. I also liked how fitted they were without needing any wearing in.

Likes and dislikes

I loved how easy they are to clean, just needed a single wipe over, which was a real time saver. I would normally got for a more traditional look and these are quite modern in design so their appearance might not be to everyone’s taste.

Verdict

A good choice for a rider who wants a pair of half chaps that are modern, low maintenance and flexible.

First impressions

These half chaps fitted well over a pair of boots and I liked the design at the top and the bottom. I was interested to see how they would stand up to me riding multiple horses a day as the leather seemed quite thin.

Overview of performance

These looked really smart and were worn on the yard, at competitions and out hunting. I was impressed at how well they stood up to work as they didn’t show any sign of giving. The zips were easy to use, didn’t slip and have lasted, but I did find that the popper at the top came undone at random times.

Likes and dislikes

The leather is soft and flexible, while also being hard wearing. I did find them a little baggy at the top and could sometimes feel my stirrup leathers pinching me when used my leg hard.

Verdict

These half chaps are very attractive, durable and good value for money.

Official description

The Felix Bühler Gaiters Modena are classic gaiters made of Italian full-grain leather, which is soft and durable at the same time. Elastic inserts allow for optimum fit to the individual shape of the rider’s calf. Manufactured in Europe, these gaiters have durable OPTI zips and are lined with soft pigskin.

First impressions

A very smart pair of gaiters with a simple design.

Overview of performance

These gaiters were soft, easy to put on straight away and didn’t require any breaking in. They worked well with jodphur boots and were smart enough to wear at competitions. Unfortunately the zip did clog up with mud and became difficult to use after a while.

Likes and dislikes

I like the soft and flexible leather, plus their overall style and look. I found they were quite baggy around the knee area, which I wasn’t keen on. I’d suggest you try them on to check the fit before buying them.

Verdict

They wouldn’t be my first choice, but if you wanted a pair just for competitions then they are worth trying on.

This shirt felt very soft, looked nice and thin, but still had a good amount of weight to it.

Overview of performance

This shirt performed very well and did exactly what it says on the tin. It kept me very cool in the heat wave and was super soft to wear. I liked how stretchy the fabric was without feeling slimy and I think will be wearing this shirt all year round as well as on the sofa at home.

Likes and dislikes

My favourite thing about this shirt is how soft and comfy it is. I am really struggling to fault it.

This is a very comfortable shirt that kept me very cool even in the hottest of temperatures, but as it was sleeveless I couldn’t wear it without a jacket in affiliated competitions.

This top looked very stylish and smart, and I really liked that the zip was nice and subtle.

Overview of performance

This top was very breathable and was great to wear in the very hot weather. It was very breathable and comfortable under a jacket, but also looked very stylish and performed well without one. I really liked how the zip wasn’t obvious and overall its simple design gave a chic and clean look.

Likes and dislikes

I really liked that this shirt made me feel like I was wearing a simple t-shirt while being breathable and cool. I did however dislike the fact that it was very long and had to be tucked so firmly into my breeches. That said the fit was true to size and it looked very smart. I think the £65 price tag is a little steep.

I thought the black piping looked really smart, although it reminded me of something I’d wear on the tennis court.

Overview of performance

This shirt was worn for a first ride back after dislocating an AC (acromioclavicular) joint and it proved very comfortable against the sore and tender shoulder area. This shirt is breathable and kept very white after going through the wash.

Likes and dislikes

I liked how comfortable this shirt is, but think it falls between being too smart for everyday use, but not quite smart enough for competition wear.

This stunning competition shirt from Aztec Diamond’s latest collection features a diagonal design on both the back and the front creating a sophisticated look. Looked really comfortable, but thought that buttons maybe more suited rather than a zip to make it look that bit smarter.

Overview of performance

This shirt was very comfortable to ride in and was very breathable with a good fit. For a shirt to wear without a stock ,the zip did work well, but it meant it was more suited to the showjumping ring than the dressage arena.

As an all-round shirt suitable for every discipline, I think buttons would be more suitable but it is a very comfortable and easy to wear shirt.

The Caldene Ainwick show shirt gives you a more traditional look without sleeves to ruche up under your show jacket. It is a cream sleeveless shirt that is simple and comfortable to wear.

First impressions

A traditional shirt that looked best suited for the show ring.

Overview of performance

The crepe style material creased very easy and proved rather impractical to take to shows. This shirt did look looked very smart when freshly pressed, but it wasn’t breathable during very hot days. It is also sleeveless and therefore had to be worn under a jacket to adhere to the rules allowed in affiliated competition, which isn’t ideal on the sweltering hot days.

Likes and dislikes

This shirt is flattering, smart and not expensive. I disliked that it didn’t wash particularly well, wasn’t breathable and creased so easily. Plus it was a shame that it couldn’t be worn without a jacket. But, I would recommend it for a pure showing person, as it’s smart and traditional.

Verdict

Best suited to the show ring as it’s smart and traditional in appearance.

Official description

Pikeur Lefinia Grip breeches are a pair of beautifully fitting breeches made from stretchy 65% cotton microfibre with a broad, shaping waistband. The waist is medium height with a ¾ seat and PU-silicon grip patches, so the regular fabric is next to the skin. They have two zipped front pockets and a stretch ankle finish.

First impressions

These breeches looked stylish and true to size. I was initially a little concerned about how see through they would be as this is a problem with many lightweight, white breeches.

Overview of performance

These proved to be very comfortable to wear and fitted very well. They were easy to ride in, breathable, washed well and, to my delight, they were not see through at all!

Likes and dislikes

These breeches were very lightweight without being at all see through, which is a massive plus. I was a huge fan of the broad waistband which makes them fit really well and well as being very comfortable. Although they are among the most expensive breeches in the test, they are worth spending the money on.

If you are willing to invest, these are a top quality pair of summer breeches.

Very much designed with summer in mind, the Tottie Jasmine Lightweight breeches are stretchy, really lightweight but tough, with breathable mesh ankle panels for added ventilation. They have silicone grip knees, smart pockets and belt loops.

First impressions

A really nice pair of breeches with an interesting design on the pockets and placement of seams across the thigh.

Overview of performance

These breeches performed very well as they are lightweight and comfortable to wear all day long in the heat. The material they are made from is lightweight without being see through. They are also very comfortable and cut very well.

Likes and dislikes

I liked how flattering these breeches were and how the seam detailing is so slimming, while the mid-rise wait cuts off the torso in a flattering way.

Verdict

These are excellent value for money and fit better, with a better material, than some much more expensive brands.

Brand new for this season, these super lightweight SXC Summer Breeches are made from breathable fabric and have Gel Tech knee design with SXC signature logo in grey. The breeches come in white and have contrast grey stitching on the pockets, leg and sock.

They were a good fit, and true to size. They also looked very smart in the saddle and still looked as good as new after being washed.

I like how comfortable and lightweight these breeches are and that the pockets are a really good size. However I am not so keen in the grey stripes on the knee grip – I think they would look better in white.

I thought these breeches look particularly smart and very stylish for competitions.

Overview of performance

These breeches were very comfortable and light to ride even during the extremely hot summer we have had. They were not at all restrictive and kept me cool when I rode.

Likes and dislikes

I liked how smart these breeches are, particularly when worn with a tailcoat. There are, however, a little bit see through and so you have to be quite selective with the colour and shape of your underwear!

Made from four-way stretch Teque-Fit fabric, which is highly breathable and durable, the Premier Equine Coco Gel Riding Breeches are designed to withstand daily use. They have a full mid-weight gel seat, giving the rider a sure grip in the saddle.

First impressions

These looked very thin and lightweight with enough detailing to look smart and fashionable, without a lot of “bling”.

Overview of performance

I was very impressed with how breathable these breeches were and, although very thin, they didn’t rub in any way. I have previously found that some very thin breeches can struggle on this front. Theses fitted extremely well and were great during the heat wave. They also washed very well and the gel knee grips weren’t affected at all by the washing process.

Likes and dislikes

I really like how cool these breeches kept me and how the thin material didn’t rubs. I thought the gel knee grips were really effective and did a great job, without being noticeable in the saddle. I liked the design, but felt they were more suitable for the showjumping ring rather than a dressage arena.

Verdict

A really good pair of breeches for showjumping on very hot days.

The Equetech Men’s Kingham Breeches are a woven, hard-wearing, everyday affordable pair of breeches offering a superb fit. Being made of 62% polyester, 33% viscose and 5% Spandex, they are machine washable.

First impressions

A smart and tough looking pair of breeches.

Overview of performance

These breeches were very comfortable to ride in and fitted well. They did prove to be very tough and hard-wearing but were too thick and hot for the height of summer. Having worn them in 30°C, I can safely say that I would prefer, and look forward to, wearing them in the cooler weather.

Likes and dislikes

I liked how comfortable and well-fitting these breeches are, but for competing with a tweed coat I felt they are a little too dark in colour.

Verdict

A good value, smart, tough pair of breeches suitable for hunting, rather than mid summer wear.

A really smart and practical looking pair of breeches that looked suitable for all disciplines.

Overview of performance

These breeches were very comfortable to wear and fitted nicely. They were also very lightweight and breathable. However, I felt they were on the slightly pricier side for what is a fairly standard pair of breeches.

Likes and dislikes

These breeches are of a good length and fitted well. But, the pockets are not big enough to put much in and the gel grips did get rather sticky in the heat.

Verdict

These breeches are suitable for slightly milder summer days when you are going to be working hard.

Welcome to our group test of summer competition breeches. All of the legwear in this group test have been put through their paces by international event rider and BE coach Jo Rimmer and her team. Find out what they thought below.

Official description

The LeMieux Bascule Breeches are designed to provide today’s jumping rider with freedom to move, as flexibility is rated as the highest priority. They feature four-way stretch fabric and LeMieux’s signature X-grip knee patches that are shaped to reduce bulk and any restriction to the angle of the knee. The outer pleated fillet allows for more comfortable knee flexion when jumping or riding with shorter stirrups. This sophisticated breech is equally at home or in the competition ring.

First impressions

These breeches looked smart, but maybe a little too designed for the more conservative among us. They also looked quite short and wide in the cut.

Overview of performance

Sadly, these breeches didn’t fit me as well as some of the others on test. I found the knee very tight and the seam pressed on my kneecap. They were generous around the waist, so required a belt, but if I went to a smaller size then they would have been too tight in other areas. That said, they were very breathable and the gel knee grips worked well.

Likes and dislikes

These breeches were truly brilliant white, which made them look very smart. I also like how comfortable the bottom of the legs are – they never left a dent or a mark in my skin under my boots. It was a shame about the fit, because I did like how they performed.

Verdict

Recommend you try them on before you buy as the cut (generous waist/slim legs) won’t suit everyone

Overview of performance

These overtrousers have a very handy design for competition purposes, as they were very easy to remove without getting off the horse. I tried a white pair and they washed well and stayed white. They are made of very thin fabric, so whatever colour the breeches you are wearing underneath will show through.

A very good pair of over competition breeches when the weather is bad, but as an everyday winter pair of over trousers, they were too lightweight.

Our reviewer could find no fault with this lightweight competition jacket, which proved suitable for all seasons.

If it’s hot weather, and you have to wear a jacket, the AA Motion Lite competition jacket from Horseware is the one you want.

It’s exceptionally lightweight, made of an almost mesh-type fabric, the holes in which you would think would mean a white or pale shirt worn underneath would show through, giving an unpleasant spotty effect. But somehow, this doesn’t happen; the jacket looks as though it is made from a solid fabric, plus it’s smart, fitted and flattering.

First impressions are that this is a high quality product; it’s well made, fits as would be expected (an XS fitted a size 8) and shows real attention to detail with the trimmings, such as the AA lapel badge, the collar design and the Italian colours on one pocket edge.

It fastens with a zip under the buttons, which I think helps the fitted appearance, and is so comfortable you (cliché alert) hardly realise you’re wearing it.

I thought that I’d only be able to wear it in summer as I’m such a wuss with the cold, but a jumper (and another layer or two as needed) underneath didn’t spoil the fit and meant I could wear it all year round. The only condition it didn’t cope with was the torrential downpour I jumped in on one September day but then to be fair, the rain was so heavy I could barely see through it; little other than a tarpaulin would have coped!

I’d recommend this jacket to anyone. Compared to some others on the market, it’s reasonably priced, definitely fair for the quality, versatile, comfortable and all the rest of it. It washes well too; I did up the fastenings and removed the AA badge to do so, although neither was directed on the label, and it looks as good now as it did when I first got it. A winner.

If you’re looking for a summer competition jacket — or even during the rest of the year — look no further.

Our reviewer found this coat to be perfect for the unpredictable British weather, plus comfortable and flattering

I tested the Tredstep Solo Pro competition coat in black in a size 14. I am usually a size 12 on top, however I often find it quite difficult to find a show jacket that fits well around my chest, especially if they are fitted, hence why I opted for a size up in this jacket.

When the jacket arrived I found that it did fit well around my chest, yet looked a tiny bit big around my waist and arms. I’d therefore be tempted to try it in a size down after all, and would recommend that others go and try one on before buying, especially those of you who also find it somewhat difficult to get a show jacket to fit well. However, despite this the jacket is still very comfortable to ride in, allows freedom of movement and gives a flattering fit.

The Solo Pro competition coat is a smart, traditional looking jacket. It is made from a technical, dual-layer fabric, which has breathable, moisture-wicking, stretchable and water-repellent properties. This makes it the perfect jacket for the unpredictable British weather! In addition to this it is soft to touch and the fabric looks like it is good quality, meaning that the jacket looks more expensive than it is.

The jacket has a four-button front with a hidden zipper to prevent unsightly gapping and a double-vented back. I find this especially useful for showjumping classes as it allows for extra movement. The jacket also has an innovative interchangeable collar, which allows you to zip it off and replace it with a different coloured collar in a matter of seconds — perfect for those of us who like to mix up our look every now and again.

Verdict

Overall it is a versatile jacket, which is suitable for a variety of disciplines and is comfortable and flattering

Our reviewer liked the style of this shirt and thought it was very practical, however it was too see-through for her

I loved everything about this show shirt. There is a subtle, pretty pattern on the fabric, and it felt really soft and lightweight to the touch. It crossed the tricky bridge of being pretty, but practical — nothing about it screamed “technical fabric”, but it certainly was.

I trialled a medium and it fitted me a (usually, but sometimes optimistic) size 10 perfectly. There was no horrid bagginess; it was not so long that it created unsightly runkles when tucked in, nor too short that it would irritatingly come un-tucked when riding.

The capped sleeves are also long enough that on a very hot day, you could get away with not wearing a jacket (rules permitting, of course). Before trialling it in competition, I wore it a few times to ride in at home to give it a fair test and to justify seeing how it fared in the washing machine.

One of the things I liked about it the most was how lovely and cool it kept me. Despite eventing on a muggy day where the weather varied from drizzle, to downpour, to hot sun, I stayed cool and dry even under a hot tweed jacket followed by a body protector.

Washing wise, I popped it in the machine at 40 degrees and it came out looking as good as new and dried within seconds. If there had to be a downside, it is probably that the lovely breathableness of the fabric was a little *ahem* see-through. As much as I love a jazzy sports bra, I’m not sure everyone else needs to see it. Something to think about if you are competing “shirt-sleeve order” on a hot day.

Verdict

Overall I thought the shirt was practical, stylish and well fitted, however, I would have preferred it not to be so see through.

Our reviewer found these breeches flattering, practical and dual-purpose

I tested these low-rise breeches in white, size 30 regular. The first thing to note is that I went up a size in them, as they do come up quite small. I am a size 10-12 and the 30 fit me well, whereas I am usually a size 28 in breeches.

The breeches are quite thick, and almost resemble jeggings. They are therefore not that stretchy (which can make getting on a bit trickier if they are tight fitting!). However, the fabric is durable and has a smart appearance. I found these breeches great during the winter, as they are that bit thicker, yet still practical enough to ride in during the summer.

The breeches feature silicone knee-grips, which are great as you really feel secure in the saddle. They also have elasticated ankles, meaning that they fit well under your riding boots and are not at all bulky. Additionally the breeches also have branded waist elastic and a zip fly with hook and bar fastening, which eliminates the hassle of buttons.

They are a flattering and stylish pair of breeches for around the yard, but I have also found that they are smart enough to wear to competitions. I have worn these to regular showjumping competitions and have found that they perform well and I can notice the benefits of the knee-grips. However, one thing to be aware of is that if you have just cleaned your tack the silicone grip on the inside of the knee can pick up saddle soap or oil. It is therefore advisable that you clean your tack well in advance to prevent this from happening. The silicone grips were also rather squeaky against my tack the first time I wore them, so you may get a couple of looks in the warm-up arena!

To my surprise (due to the nature of the material), the knee-grips washed well and have not come away from the fabric, withered or melted in the washing machine, as I’ve found in the past with different silicone products.

Verdict

Overall these are a good, practical and sturdy pair of breeches that are dual-purpose.
