Vizirider Hi Vis Vest

Anything to improve your visibility on the road is great – whether that’s additional hi viz for the rider or hi viz for horses – so I was keen to try out the Vizirider Hi Vis Vest, which is complete with LEDs to the front and rear.

The vest has a front zip, which has held up really well. I often find the fastening is where my hi viz jackets have failed previously, whether the zips have broken or the Velcro loses its stick. However, this zip feels of good quality and I haven’t had any problems so far despite wearing it regularly over the last few months.

There are six white LED lights on the front, in addition to six red on the back. I like the differentiation of white and red on the front and back, as other road users will instinctively know if you’re approaching them or heading away. I suspect this is most useful in the dark – it’s highly unlikely that I’ll be hacking in the dark, but if I had to lead my horse down a road close to dark, for example, I would be glad to have it with me.

The lights have three modes – static, fast flash and slow flash – and it was very easy to change between them using the button that’s located by your left hip. I had expected a more fiddly switch, so this was a great discovery.

It was easy to charge and you could do this via USB, so using a standard plug, on your laptop or even in the car. The battery sits neatly in a little pocket so that it stays in place and it’s quite easy to remove and reconnect for charging. The actual charge didn’t last as long as I expected (static up to 10 hours, slow flash up to 14 hours, fast flash up to 20 hours), but I was fiddling about with it a lot at first to test all the modes. I found I needed to charge it once a week – for context, I hack out four or five times a week.

I wore it in the fog – and the lights added more visibility than the photos suggest. I did think as I was trotting along the edge of a large field that it would likely give other riders and dog walkers an extra few seconds to spot me, even if they weren’t sure exactly what was coming.

The size guide recommendations suggested that I size up to fit my winter riding coat underneath, which was necessary. I’m an average UK 10 and the vest I tested was a medium. The medium a bit big for me to wear without a coat, but as it’s got the LED lights I’m more likely to save this hi viz vest for winter riding.

The main issue I had with this vest is that it was too long for me. When worn over my winter riding coat, I found it bunched up over my hips and not only was this quite annoying, but it meant that sometimes the lowest lights could not be seen at all as the vest did not sit flat against my back. Although it was still too long without a coat, the bunching didn’t happen so much. While this may be a good length for walkers, cyclists or long-bodied horse riders, I found it too long.

The RRP is currently £39. You can get hi vis vests much cheaper, albeit usually without the LEDs, but some equestrian brands come close to this price. I expect this jacket will last a few years, but I will need to wash it regularly to keep it looking bright. I washed it on a handwash cycle and it came out much cleaner.

Verdict

This LED vest is really handy when the weather’s bad. I probably won’t use it as a replacement for my usual hi viz jacket on an everyday basis because of the fit, but it will be my first choice when the visibility is reduced.

Uvex Tocsen Crash Sensor

The Uvex Tocsen Crash Sensor is a small device that attaches to your riding hat – or other sports helmet – behind the ear. It works in conjunction with an app that stores your emergency contacts and, in the event of a fall, can send them an alert.

The sensor arrived in a small box that contained the sensor (which is available in black or pink), a charging lead, attaching sticker, instruction sheet and two decorative stickers. The sensor needs charging for two hours before you can use it. This was easy enough as it connects to a standard USB charger. When I plugged it in I did expect a little light to appear to say it was on, so at first I wasn’t sure it was charging. Then after fiddling about with it I realised it made a jingle noise once it was plugged in and charging, which was helpful.

Once charged, I set about attaching it to my hat. This was probably the easiest part of the setup process. All I had to do was use the double-sided sticker provided to position and secure it. I have a leather-look helmet and was worried it might damage the covering, but I’ve removed it to check and you’d never have known it was there.

The app can be downloaded for free onto any iOS or Android device and this was simple. Setting it up was a little more complicated and there weren’t detailed instructions in English. I filled in my details – I had to add my emergency contacts manually, as although the app picked up my contact list I seemed to be unable to select them – and then connected to the sensor via Bluetooth.

When you add an emergency contact, it sends them a text but doesn’t say who it’s from. I hadn’t pre-warned my colleague, Sophie Cheeseman, I was adding her, so at first she thought the text was spam, so I’d advise giving your contacts a heads-up before you start. Contacts can download the app, too, but this isn‘t essential and we tested using the text feature.

The app allows you to simulate a fall, so that you and your contacts can see what to expect. It took me quite a few tries to successfully run the simulation, but I think this was user error as I’ve ran multiple since to show friends at the yard with less problems. This time the message did explain who it was from and that I was running a simulation. When you fall, the app will give you 30 seconds to say you’re OK and cancel the alert before sending a message to your contacts. If in that time you’re getting yourself up and catching your horse, you can notify them after but it allows you to prevent the worry if you’re quick. If you don’t have mobile signal where you ride, there is also a feature that alerts your contacts if you haven’t logged your return by your expected return time.

The sensor is small but quite noticeable. I forgot it was there, but everyone I rode out with noticed it and asked what it was. Once it’s attached, you can’t take it off without replacing the sticker and only one is provided. This means you couldn’t take it off for competing or to charge the device if you attached it directly to your hat so I would recommend attaching it to a hi-vis hat band (I used this one from Equisafety) rather than your hat. I leave my hat at the yard, so this saves me bringing the whole thing home when I want to charge it – I can just bring the band – but it also means that I can lend the Tocsen to friends and take it off for competing.

To use the device when you’re riding, all you need to do is turn on your Bluetooth and connect to the device. I also run the Equilab app while I’m hacking, so I was worried about the two draining my battery, but it doesn’t use as much battery as I anticipated. So far the Tocsen’s battery has lasted really well – it claims to last three months with average use, although I’ve found it’s run down a little quicker so I may use it more than average.

I haven’t fallen off while using the sensor, but the simulation has given me reassurance that it will work. I did, however, also drop the Tocsen on the floor at home once I’d finished setting it up and it activated immediately, began to alarm and sent Sophie an alert, which was really good to see.

The text message includes a link, which allowed Sophie to see my exact location – she was relieved to see I was at home – and gave her the option to Google Map to me or call me, which was a really smooth transition. I was pleased with the map as if I fell off in the woods and had one of my fellow liveries as my emergency contact, they would know exactly where to find me – and if it was a local friend, they would be able to use Google Maps very easily.

Although I had a few teething problems setting it up and using the app, I can really see how the Uvex Tocsen Crash Sensor would be handy to have – plus most importantly it was easy for my emergency contact to use. I mostly hack, live alone and am often one of the last to leave the yard in the evening during the summer. If I didn’t return from a hack it’s quite possible that no one would notice for a good while, so for someone like me it could be a life-saver. Equally, if you have a child hacking out it can give you peace of mind.

It retails at £79.99, which is a lot for a small device, but when you consider what it could do it’s harder to put a price on it. Plus, it’s good to note that the app is free – and you do not need to pay a subscription for it to work. It looks like it will last a long time and although it was easy enough to remove, I think it’s unlikely to fall off. Plus, now that I’ve found a way to detach it from my hat by using the hat band, the value has really increased for me.

Verdict

*H&H Approved* A great bit of kit if you regularly hack alone.

Equetech Storm waterproof riding gloves

The Equetech storm waterproof riding gloves are a very practical-looking winter glove with a plain stylish finish. They are a chunky-looking glove with a bulky top. At £39.50 they are at the more expensive end of the market, but if you are looking for the ultimate warm, waterproof pair of gloves look no further.

These gloves fit true to size. I thought at first that they may not offer enough contact as they are a thicker glove, but when tested them I felt able to grip the reins well and had good grip. That said, I would feel more comfortable schooling in a thinner glove.

The gloves have a band of elastic around the wrist, which offers a nice level of support. After using the gloves for a few weeks, the elastic continued to feel as strong and the Velcro just as secure.

These Equetech gloves are made up of multiple layers offering a waterproof and windproof outer shell, a mid-layer waterproof membrane and an inner micro fleece lining. The combination of these materials offers a very warm glove even on the coldest windiest day whilst keeping your hands nice and dry.

The touch-screen finger feature for use with smartphones worked most of the time. This feature is really handy on cold days when you don’t want to remove your gloves.

Woof Wear Precision thermal gloves

The Woof Wear Precision thermal gloves are really stylish modern-looking winter riding gloves. Available in navy or black, I tested the navy version – it is a really nice colour that styles perfectly with the black padded areas.

I found these gloves to be true to size. They’re a nice, snug fit that allows you to really mould your fingers around the reins while still allowing plenty of movement. They were great for schooling as I could really feel the reins.

The gloves have a slightly thicker material around the wrist, which makes them feel really supported, with a wide, strong Velcro fastening on the back of the wrist. After testing the product for a few weeks, they continued to have the same level of support and the Velcro felt just as strong.

These gloves were breathable – they kept my hands warm enough without them getting sweaty. They are water-resistant, so perfect for use in light rain. I also used these gloves for leading in and out of the field and they had a really good grip, but again you could still feel the leadrope and hold it easily.

These gloves are suitable for machine washing at 30°C and have washed well. I think these gloves are fairly priced and look like they’re going to last well.

Ariat Tek grip insulated gloves

The Ariat Tek grip insulated gloves are a very classy, traditional pair of winter riding gloves. They are available in both black and brown, with a very plain finish with a subtle checked detail, which makes them perfect for all disciplines. At £40 these gloves are at the more expensive end of the market, but they’re a product that feel quality and will last.

The gloves fit true to size, I found them slightly long on the fingers but it doesn’t affect the way they feel when ridden in. They offer a lightweight feel allowing plenty of movement but offering plenty of support around the wrist and padding in the areas needed. The gloves took a few uses to wear in and lose their ‘new glove’ stiffness but once they had they moulded around the hands very comfortably.

The gloves have a band of elastic around the wrist that offers a nice level of support – and after using the gloves for a few weeks, the elastic continued to feel as strong and the velcro just as secure.

The gloves are make with a Polartec stretch fleece which makes them lovely and warm, and also very soft to touch, with a hardface coating making them stronger and water resistant. I found the gloves really warm, even on a cold day when hacking slowly. They are not completely waterproof but perfect for use in light rain and kept my hands nice and dry.

The gloves offer a lovely amount of movement and grip, making them perfect for both hacking and school where more contact and flexibility is needed. I also tested the gloves for leading in and out of the field and they offer a good amount of grip.

Uvex CRX700 riding gloves

The Uvex CRX700 gloves offer a very modern, stylish look with a simple reflective pattern on the top that gives them a unique finish. At £41.99 they are at the more expensive end of the market, but with the high durability offering of these gloves, you should get your moneys worth.

The fit of these gloves is true to size. At first I thought that they may not offer enough contact as they are a thicker glove but upon testing I found them to be incredibly grippy and extremely comfortable. The stretchy material allows a nice amount of movement and enough contact to school and jump in as well and hacking.

The gloves have a band of elastic around the wrist that offers a nice level of support – and after using the products for a few weeks the elastic continued to feel as strong and the Velcro just as secure.

These gloves are made up of multiple layers offering moisture control, heat retention and wind- and water-repellency. The gloves are made of a Schoeller softshell material with an inner fleece lining. I found the gloves to be a really good winter riding glove – I found they did a good job of keeping my hands warm and it was only when temperatures really dropped that my hands felt cold.

I really like the reflective print on the backs of the gloves, which offers a bit of extra visibility when doing hand signals on the roads.

First impressions

I couldn’t get this one over my shoulders – I had a medium – so Sian tested this one for me. Our first observation was that you wouldn’t be able to wear this one under a competition shirt without a jacket due to the colour.

Overview of performance

This fitted Sian really well – so we’d say it comes up slightly smaller and is more suited to someone with narrower shoulders. It was comfortable and really stretchy, which made it easier to put on. It wore well and the colour stayed strong through plenty of washes.

Sian’s likes and dislikes

I liked the design and the underband. The padding in the front of the bra moved around in the wash and there was no way of accessing the lining to sort them out easily, which is a bit of a headache. Overall, this sports bra is fantastic value for money.

Sam’s first impressions

I gave this one to Sian because it was an over-the-head style and I couldn’t get it on, despite it being a medium, which is what I’d normally wear.

Sian’s overview of performance

This bra had no padding, but it fitted me well and I felt secure. It was comfortable and had a good level of stretch so, although Sam struggled, I found it easy to put on. It washed well and stayed the same shape, but it did suffer a small bit of wear over time.

Sian’s likes and dislikes

I absolutely love that it’s made of recycled nets – it’s really cool and the material actually feels lovely. The design was plain but that was fine because it made it great for wearing under a white competition shirt. You can’t go wrong with such a basic style – I wear it with everything.

This one came in a size L, but as it was an over-the-head one and I have broad shoulders I struggled to get it on, so I gave it to Sian.

Sian’s overview of performance

As it was a bit big it was difficult to assess the support, but I think it was a really flattering shape and style. It washed fine and wore really well. I wore it all day and it was comfortable – if it had been my size I’m confident I would have really loved this bra.

I loved the overall style, really liked the cross design and I liked the fun range of colours.

First impressions

I had a medium, which is the size I would normally order but I couldn’t get it on over my shoulders. I gave it to Sian to test as she would normally order a small/medium.

Overview of performance

This bra came up smaller than expected, but it fitted Sian well – she found it secure and really comfortable, so was happy wearing it all day. It was lightweight, so it felt like you weren’t wearing one – in a good way as it wasn’t restricting. Sian loved the design and felt well supported. Having narrow shoulders, she found it much easier to put on over her head than I did. It wore really well and the detailing is still in tact after plenty of washes, which was a pleasant surprise to both of us.

Sian’s likes and dislikes

We loved the colour and the wide underband, which Sian found really stretchy and comfortable. It’s the sort of style she really likes, but would recommend going up a size, especially if you have broader shoulders, because they come up quite small.

First impressions

I thought this looked quite strange and quite awkward, but I could see the inspiration behind it and where the design has evolved from.

Overview of performance

I had a medium, but it was a little on the large side so I probably would have been better with a small. It was well packaged and the instructions were really helpful. It was easy to put on but took a while to get used to. It felt a bit restrictive, especially at first, but as I got used to it I found it more useful. I wore it at boot camp and it did stop my boobs moving. It washed well, although the elastic did stretch a bit.

Sam’s likes and dislikes

The colour wasn’t the most practical, but it was fun and you could get it in a range of other colours if you preferred another. It was a nice concept, but I don’t think I would use it in the future. However, if you’re struggling with your sports bra this could help as an added extra.

First impressions

These gloves looked very well made, the material felt of high quality and they felt like they were made to last. I really liked the style of this glove in general.

Overview of performance

I felt these gloves came up just a little on the small side, I am usually an 8 and felt I could have comfortably gone up half a size, possibly because of the extra winter lining in these. They were, however, extremely comfortable and they did not feel bulky to ride in, even with the winter lining. I wore them for riding, teaching in and general use around the yard. They provided plenty of protection in the cooler weather, particularly from the wind, and kept my hands really warm. They also had really good grip. They dried quickly if they got wet without any change to the glove itself, and they’ve worn well, too. They aren’t waterproof, but I didn’t feel I had to avoid getting them wet at all cost.

Wild Farm’s likes and dislikes

The design and comfort provided by these gloves was excellent — they look both sporty and stylish. I would recommend taking a second look at your normal sizing and consider going up by half a glove size.

First impressions

The gloves looked really smart and I immediately thought they looked of good quality for the price. I prefer this style to other winter gloves as some are too thick to work in and too puffy. These gloves are great as you can move your fingers and hold yard tools easier.

Overview of performance

These gloves were really comfortable and they kept my hands really warm, so I wore them for both riding and yard work. I had a small, but I could have done with an extra-small — they were OK to ride in, but I think they would have been even better if I had a smaller size. They stood up to regular wear really well and still look smart.

First impressions

My first impressions were very positive — the gloves looked expensive and of good quality. I also really liked the style, especially the silicone badge on the front.

Overview of performance

They fitted perfectly and were very comfortable — I had no issues wearing them all day around the yard and lungeing. Sadly, however, I found them too chunky to ride in and I occasionally had to take them off to do something fiddly. But, importantly, they were amazing at keeping my hands warm. I washed these gloves weekly and every time they came up beautifully with no signs of wear.

Wild Farm’s likes and dislikes

They were extremely comfortable to wear and I think they’re great value for money. It would be great if they came in a water-resistant version.

First impressions

These gloves appeared to be very well made, nice to look and and very light to hold.

Overview of performance

The gloves fitted nicely and were generally very comfortable to wear. I found them too bulky to ride in as it was difficult to get an effective grip on the reins. However, they were great for wearing on the yard and kept my hands really warm even when it was really cold. They washed and dried very well and stayed looking new even after a lot of use.

Wild Farm’s likes and dislikes

It was so useful to be able to use a touch-screen phone without taking the gloves off — this was great! I also found the grip on the gloves very useful. The only thing I’d change would be to make them more suited to regular ridden use. I will definitely keep wearing them next winter!

Verdict

I would recommend these for wearing on the yard.

First impressions

These gloves looked well made. They are fairly plain with a distinctive emblem on the wrist tab — I think you will either like it or not, depending on your personal tastes.

Overview of performance

I tested an extra-large pair, which is bigger than I would normally wear, so it was a little difficult for me to judge the fit and sizing, but I would expect they were probably sized to normal expectations. They were comfortable to wear and were thin enough enough to keep a good feel while riding. I wore them for riding, lungeing and general yard duties — they definitely helped to keep the wind out, but I did feel a little compromised on really cold days. They dried well after use in the rain and have stood up to the use they’ve had so far.

Wild Farm’s likes and dislikes

I really liked the silicone grip to the fingers and thumbs. I would be tempted to increase the lining for warmth but, as ever, it’s a trade off for bulk over functionality.

Verdict

Could have been warmer, but this would have been a trade off for comfort while riding.

I liked the style and thought they were made of a good quality material. They were also very tight.

Overview of performance

These gloves were comfortable but I got hot in them very quickly as they weren’t very breathable. I wore them for yard work and hacking — they were particularly handy in dull/dark conditions as they are reflective. The material was strong and they stood up to regular wear, but it was quite thick, which made gripping some things tricky. They were waterproof, though, which was great!

I loved the style of these gloves, but it would be great if they were more breathable.

They were just so handy to have over the winter for doing things like bathing for competitions — my hands were always warm and dry. The only thing they weren’t so great for was tacking up and changing rugs, so it would be great if they could be thinner without compromising on warmth to make fiddly jobs easier.

They also washed well but took a long time to dry.

I thought the material and fit were great. The only thing I’d change is to make them waterproof because you often can’t avoid the rain in the winter.

These gloves looked like they were really good quality, and they had quite a snug fit.

Overview of performance

The gloves were quite tight to begin with, but they stretched after I’d worn them a few times. They were really comfortable to wear and the material was really soft on my hands. I didn’t really find them to be water-resistant or breathable enough — my hands got quite hot wearing them, even when it was cold. They washed well, but were slow to dry, but they stood up to regular wear very well. I wore them for riding mostly as they were difficult to wear for some things, such as tacking up.

I love that it stands really well in the rain, and that you can wear it on and off the yard. It’s not bright, but it reflects really well on the road. It was also flattering, which was an added bonus. The hood can’t be zipped tighter so sometimes the wind blows it off. Overall, I love it and would definitely recommend it — but maybe more for off the yard, dog walking or other outdoor activities, because it looses its USP during the day!

This jacket came up quite large — I am a size 10 and the small was too big. However, it was very comfortable, the fleece was cosy and the coat keeps you warm and dry. I felt like I could be seen and it was bright enough without being too much. It was very durable.

I loved the fleece lining as it made it very comfortable and would recommend this for the winter.

The jacket is well made and very equestrian appropriate, it serves its purpose very well.

Overview of performance

This jacket definitely serves its purpose to make you highly visible! It fits well in a sense that is more of a loose fit, which makes it comfortable and easy to move in. It works well in rainy and windy weather and it can be worn in most temperatures with or without a jumper. I mostly used it for hacking or walking horses in-hand down the road, but I you could use it for any type of walking or work on more exposed areas where visibility is crucial.

Tamsin’s likes and dislikes

I like that it’s not too thick and I can wear it even in warmer weather, but that it also works really well in rainy and windy weather. The zippers on the sides that make riding more comfortable are a great feature.

Verdict

I would definitely recommend it because I think it is a good product for a reasonable price.

This jacket fitted perfectly. It was comfortable and good for most weathers as it wasn’t too warm, but kept the wind and light rain off. It stood up to regular wear, but I was worried it could be easily ripped or torn. I didn’t feel like I was seen very well in this jacket as it only reflects when headlights are shone on it.

Tamsin’s likes and dislikes

I loved how lightweight and comfortable this jacket was, but it was a shame that it wasn’t very effective in daylight or at dusk, which meant I didn’t really like wearing it on the road.

Verdict

A flattering lightweight and comfortable jacket, but not the most visible.

First impressions

I thought this was a really attractive hat and I liked the nice subtle tiny branded badge at front.

Overview of performance

I found this hat really warm and comfortable. It fitted really well well on my head and covered my ears well. I also felt really smart and stylish in it and I could wear it around the yard as well as out and about town.

Likes and dislikes

My favourite thing about this hat is how well lined it is on the inside. If I had to have a dislike, it would be that the turned up stitching doesn’t look that hard-wearing, although it hasn’t shown any wear yet.

Verdict

I'd recommend this to a friend even if they weren't horsey — it's a really warm, stylish hat

I received so many comments on how smart these chaps look while in the saddle. Not only were they extremely comfortable while riding, but also were great for doing yard work off the horse. They proved to be very tough and hard wearing plus they maintained their fit while being worn everyday. Although they are on the more expensive side, they are worth the investment.

Likes and dislikes

I really like the leather they are made out of as it looks very stylish, is soft but also so tough and hardwearing, plus didn’t need any wearing in.

Verdict

I would highly recommend these chaps. Many people who have seen me in them are planning to buy them.

They slipped on really well first time, while being snug and flattering on my calf. The material looked really easy to clean, hard wearing and flexible.

Overview of performance

These half chaps were very lightweight and breathable – so much so that you barely felt like you had them on. The zip stayed securely fastened while riding and they didn’t pinch or rub at all. They were very breathable so my legs didn’t get sweaty. I also liked how fitted they were without needing any wearing in.

Likes and dislikes

I loved how easy they are to clean, just needed a single wipe over, which was a real time saver. I would normally got for a more traditional look and these are quite modern in design so their appearance might not be to everyone’s taste.

Verdict

A good choice for a rider who wants a pair of half chaps that are modern, low maintenance and flexible.

These half chaps fitted well over a pair of boots and I liked the design at the top and the bottom. I was interested to see how they would stand up to me riding multiple horses a day as the leather seemed quite thin.

Overview of performance

These looked really smart and were worn on the yard, at competitions and out hunting. I was impressed at how well they stood up to work as they didn’t show any sign of giving. The zips were easy to use, didn’t slip and have lasted, but I did find that the popper at the top came undone at random times.

Likes and dislikes

The leather is soft and flexible, while also being hard wearing. I did find them a little baggy at the top and could sometimes feel my stirrup leathers pinching me when used my leg hard.

Verdict

These half chaps are very attractive, durable and good value for money.

These gaiters were soft, easy to put on straight away and didn’t require any breaking in. They worked well with jodphur boots and were smart enough to wear at competitions. Unfortunately the zip did clog up with mud and became difficult to use after a while.

Likes and dislikes

I like the soft and flexible leather, plus their overall style and look. I found they were quite baggy around the knee area, which I wasn’t keen on. I’d suggest you try them on to check the fit before buying them.

Verdict

They wouldn’t be my first choice, but if you wanted a pair just for competitions then they are worth trying on.

These gloves were lightweight, very comfortable to wear, breathable and with plenty of grip. I wore them during hunter trials and cross-country and never once lost the grip on my reins, even when the horses were very sweaty.

Likes and dislikes

I really like everything about these gloves, especially how they perform. My only criticism would be that a brown pair is missing from the collection! They are good value for how well they performed and they are very multi-purpose.

I loved theses gloves at first sight: the colour, feel and the fit.

These gloves are very smart to look at and I have worn this pair the most of all that were on test. As well as being stylish and smart, they are also lightweight, very breathable and offer plenty of grip. My only criticism is that the palm side of the gloves is beginning to deteriorate and look fairly worn.

Likes and dislikes

I LOVE the colour, fit and style so have been autumn hunting in them most mornings. I have also competed in them and had a few people comment on how smart they look. They are touch screen compatible. I would have liked a slightly tougher material on the palm.

These gloves felt lightweight, with plenty of air vents and were smart in appearance. I like the synthetic suede palm and mesh top layer. They felt like a quality product.

Overview of performance

These gloves offered very close contact with good airflow, but I found them slightly on the small side. They gave me a good range of movement and the reinforced synthetic suede panels on the inside of the glove where you would normally hold your reins have helped prevent wear and tear. The stitching has held up really well and still look brand new after lots of use.

Likes and dislikes

I really like the style as they smart, yet very practical. My only minor dislike was that they came up slightly small and I would have preferred if they fitted further up my wrist.

Verdict

Smart enough for summer competing, with plenty of grip, yet lightweight and breathable. I would suggest going up a size.

While testing these gloves, I found my hands were quite warm while wearing them in the hotter weather, but since it has cooled down to more normal British temperatures, they have been very comfortable and useful. They are lacking in airflow in comparison to the other gloves on test, but they have been smart and robust enough to wear for competition and autumn hunting. They don’t quite offer the same amount of grip as some, but they have still been very useful.

Likes and dislikes

I like the simple appearance and minimal detailing. I would have preferred more grip and better breathability. I’ve found they are not as touch screen compatible as the others.

Verdict

A smart all-round, affordable glove for competing in.

First impressions

At first I thought they looked like golf gloves, but once I had read the description I understood why they had an alternative appearance!

Overview of performance

These gloves are extremely lightweight and you barely even notice they are on. They have been particularly useful this summer on the very hot days we have had. They are very breathable with plenty of airflow. They had an excellent grip on the reins and are touchscreen compatible. These gloves came up fairly small on me, so would recommend ordering a size up. They also prevent tan lines on the front of your hands and wrists.

Likes and dislikes

I really liked how close they are to your skin and I never got too hot while wearing them. I found them rather tight around my wrists.

Verdict

A brilliant choice for a very hot summer or if you struggle with hot hands.

Smart in appearance, good all-round practical-looking glove.

Overview of performance

I found these gloves were slightly tight on the cuff, but did offer a close-contact feel on the reins. The mesh back ensured there was plenty of airflow, but I found the fingers weren’t quite long enough, making them shallow in fit. These glove were good on very hot days as I didn’t get warm hands at all, and they offered plenty of grip.

Likes and dislikes

I like the colour of these gloves with the suede palm. They did offer a good range of movement and a close-contact feel. It was just a shame that they weren’t a little bigger. They are also quite expensive.

Verdict

A good all-round training and competition glove, but order a size bigger than normal

Overview of performance

These gloves fitted well and are more traditionally-styled compared to the others in the group test. I did not find they were very touch screen compatible and didn’t offer a real close-contact feel. They had relatively good airflow, so may hands didn’t overheat, but the stitching has come loose on the inside where you hold your reins.

Likes and dislikes

I like the sizing, appearance and lightweight feel of the glove, plus the fact that they are not too expensive, but I was disappointed that the stitching came loose on the inside.

Verdict

A good value, smart pair of gloves, but they aren't very hard wearing.

While I would recommend these gloves to others, they aren’t my favourites in the group test

The fit wasn’t great, and they weren’t particularly durable for intense riding. One of the fingers split at the seam during the testing period. The touch screen ability, which is one of their big selling points, is intermittent.

Rob’s likes and dislikes

While I liked the neoprene material, I didn’t find them comfortable to wear and they were not a generous fit.

Verdict

These are the most breathable socks I have used and were very comfy to wear. If I had to be critical, they did fall down a wee bit (but not that was noticeable) and the foot shape could be a little bit more contoured.

I would absolutely recommend these socks 100%. I really loved them.

Back on Track Socks are extremely comfortable to wear throughout the day or even while asleep. Because the fabric reflects more heat when you are moving around, it is wise, initially, to get accustomed to the product during your active daylight hours. If you have a sprained or damaged your ankle, we recommend the use of an ankle brace in preference to the socks, because it also provides some degree of support.
