Foal! Tiny colt born to rescued mare and named after Harry Kane has already won hearts

A newborn foal born to a rescued mare just before England’s World Cup opener has been named Kane after national football captain Harry.

The tiny colt’s name is also a nod to his dam Sugar, who was found aged two and in foal by welfare charity HAPPA, which took her in early this year.

Kane the colt arrived on 15 June, two days before his namesake scored twice in England’s first championship fixture against Croatia.

“With his wobbly legs, bright personality and early hints of a victory lap, Kane has quickly become the yard’s newest little star,” a HAPPA spokesperson said. “The football-inspired name was chosen as a cheerful tribute to his mum, Sugar, and to the excitement surrounding England’s summer on the world stage.”

Sugar arrived with another two-year-old who was also in foal, both had been abandoned unhandled and were wary of people.

“Her story makes his safe arrival even more special, marking a hopeful new chapter for both mare and foal after a difficult start,” the spokesperson said.

“Kane is already proving popular with visitors and supporters, who have been delighted by his timely arrival, his proud mum’s story, and the feel-good football connection. His name has brought smiles across the yard and added an extra reason to cheer during World Cup fever, although, for now, his main goal is staying upright.”

HAPPA head of equine operations Amanda Berry said the team wanted a name to reflect the national excitement during the World Cup, and having consulted supporters on social media, Kane was the choice, which “matched his mum perfectly”.

“After everything Sugar has been through, seeing her safely care for her foal is incredibly moving,” she added. “He is a strong, lively colt with lots of character, and while we cannot promise he will score any goals, he has certainly won everyone over already.”

The original Kane is joint third top scorer in the World Cup so far, having also scored against Panama in England’s final group game, and twice in the 2-1 round of 32 win against the Democratic Republic of Congo on 1 July.

The spokesperson added that equine Kane’s arrival is an opportunity to highlight the care and work that goes into supporting rescued mares and foals.

“Staff will continue to monitor Sugar and Kane closely as he grows, develops, and takes his first careful steps towards a healthy future, no offside decisions required,” she said.

‘She is still fighting – and so are we’: next hours critical for neglected pony ‘left to die’ in field

An equine charity has said “the coming hours are critical” for a severely neglected and underweight pony who is having urgent veterinary care after she was “left to die” alone in a field.

Annie, an 11.2hh mare thought to be around three or four years old, was taken in by the Horse Trust after she was rescued from a field near Basingstoke by World Horse Welfare. She was found weighing 157kg and had a body score of 0.5 out of five.

“She was identified by colleagues at World Horse Welfare as the thinnest in the herd. Before they could return with police support, she was moved. The team believes she was deliberately dumped nearby to evade investigation,” said a Horse Trust spokesperson.

The spokesperson said Annie, named after the charity’s founder Ann Lindo, is “fighting for her survival”. She has a heavy lice infestation and suspected significant worm burden, and there are “concerns about further gastrointestinal disease”.

“Treating Annie is a delicate balance. Intervening too aggressively could overwhelm her system; moving too slowly could cost her life,” said the spokesperson, adding that the mare is on a 24-hour trickle feeding plan, but shows “very little appetite”.

Horse Trust veterinary director Nicola Housby-Skeggs said Annie is in “very poor condition” – and the team needs to establish whether this is owing to neglect or disease.

“Despite initial concerns, Annie’s first blood tests show she is not in foal. Early indications suggest she may already have had a foal, having likely been kept in a mixed herd with stallions from very early on,” said the spokesperson.

Horse Trust chief executive Jeanette Allen added that Annie had “clearly suffered horrific neglect and abandonment” – and was “so covered in lice that she had become severely anaemic”.

“During her first veterinary examination she was so itchy that as the vet ran their hands over her skin, Annie started nuzzling the handler in relief. Even the lightest touch caused clumps of hair to come away,” said Ms Allen.

“What struck us most is just how utterly exhausted she is. She is now somewhere quiet and comfortable with another pony nearby for company, and we are hoping she can finally begin to rest before the life-saving treatments ahead.

“She is in a dangerously bad state, but we are doing everything we can for her. Right now, hope and positivity are playing a very big part in her care.”

Annie remains under “constant supervision” and the Horse Trust team will do “everything in their power” for her, but the charity “estimates a low chance of survival”.

“She is lying down for periods and has already needed help to stand again. At this stage, the team is monitoring her moment by moment, as even small changes could signal rapid deterioration,” said the spokesperson. “The coming hours are critical.”

Jeanne said if Annie does not make it, “she will at least have known care, comfort and kindness”.

“That matters. But we are not there yet. She is still fighting – and so are we,” said Ms Allen.

Should horse rescues be licensed? MPs debate as Government to ask the question

Equine welfare charities have welcomed a forthcoming Government consultation on mandatory licensing for animal rescue centres – if managed and enforced appropriately.

On 26 January, MPs debated a petition calling for licensing and regulation of dog and cat rescues, which had been signed by almost 110,000 people. The petition stated that by introducing “clear legal requirements, the Government can safeguard animal welfare”.

MPs discussed animal rescues more broadly and highlighted that although many do “great work”, there are some operating “without clear legal oversight, creating opportunities for unethical practices”.

MP Richard Holden said anyone, “regardless of their experience or intention”, can say they have an animal rescue or rehoming centre and not be subject to inspection or monitoring – and this has “resulted in animals suffering, not only dogs and cats but horses and other animals”.

The Government acknowledged the “need to crack down on poor practices” of some rescues in its animal welfare strategy, published in December – and committed to a consultation on licensing rescue and rehoming organisations.

Defra minister Angela Eagle referenced this consultation during the debate and said it will be used “to come to an appropriate decision about the best way to license and regulate” – and to ensure that any new framework is “proportionate”.

Defra told H&H the consultation will take place “in due course”.

Licensing for animal rescue centres: charities have their say

Equine charities have long called for the licensing of rescues, and H&H has reported on high-profile welfare cases involving sanctuaries in recent years.

World Horse Welfare head of public affairs Kim Ayling told H&H licensing “should improve animal welfare, if implemented and enforced appropriately” and the charity would welcome working with the Government, via the National Equine Welfare Council and British Horse Council.

“However, laws are not worth the paper they are written on unless they are effectively implemented and enforced by trained inspectors,” she said.

“The Government’s promise to work with local authorities to improve enforcement of the existing regulations for licensing of riding establishments, for instance, is welcome. Currently enforcement varies significantly from area to area and this must be improved before any further types of activities are licensed, including rescue centres.”

Redwings “welcomes” a consultation – having “been involved in multiple cases where serious welfare concerns have been identified in establishments presenting as sanctuaries”.

“The commitment, knowledge and resources needed to care for neglected, often challenging rescue cases should not be underestimated,” said Redwings campaigns and policy manager Helen Whitelegg.

“This needs to be reflected in a framework that acknowledges the work of those establishments who offer a lifeline to animals, while preventing those unable to meet the needs of animals from causing further suffering, and securing public donations without appropriate accountability.”

How it works in Wales and Scotland

In 2020 the Welsh Government launched a voluntary code of practice for animal welfare establishments, and in 2021 the Scottish Government went a step further by introducing mandatory licensing.

Redwings head of welfare Nic de Brauwere, who was involved in the work in Wales through his position of chair of the Animal Welfare Network for Wales, told H&H the voluntary code was “helpful because it underwent the safe process of drafting, consulting and Government checks as if it had been a statutory code”.

“We believe this set a new standard but, as expected, without the licensing framework to back it up, in particular to ensure access to all animal welfare establishments to check standards, the voluntary code was not, by itself, enough to raise standards across the board,” he said.

“The broad-ranging consultation by the Welsh Government in 2024 led to a high volume of responses and in 2025 the Welsh Government indicated it would develop proposals to consider regulation, to include a possible licensing scheme.”

Pony dumped in London ‘on the brink of death’ spends first Christmas in new home

A pony dumped in a field in London “on the brink of death” has “beaten the odds to survive” and will spend Christmas in his new home.

Ronnie, thought to be a part-bred Hackney, was rescued from Cranford Park, Hillingdon, in March, by council staff, who contacted the RSPCA.

Ronnie was emaciated and was the weight of a pony half his size, the RSPCA said. He was suffering from equine flu and had a heavy worm burden, and blood tests showed a weak immune system.

“Despite being only two or three years old it is thought that he had been used as a driving pony and abandoned because he was too weak to carry on,” said an RSPCA spokesperson.

“He was brought into the care of the RSPCA Millbrook Animal Centre who worked as a team to bring Ronnie back from the brink of death.”

The centre’s yard supervisor Charlotte Neary said Ronnie had a body score of 0.5.

“The whole picture was quite shocking. Not only was he so young and underweight, but he’d obviously been expected to work as well and when he couldn’t, he was dumped,” she said.

“Ronnie has been the sweetest pony from the first day – everyone who spends time with him instantly falls in love. He was really shut down and very quiet but was still such a gentleman and let everybody treat him; the farrier, vet, dentist and the staff. It was like he wanted to take all the help because he knew he needed it.”

Ronnie was carefully managed back to health. After six weeks, he made enough progress to go into a bigger paddock with a pony called Frodo.

“As Ronnie grew stronger he became happier and started playing with other horses. But his mannerism never really changed, he was the perfect little gentleman. It’s the only way to describe him,” said Charlotte.

“He would give us a happy little whinny every morning and it was just so heartwarming to see him not only get better physically, but mentally as well. He put on 32kg in four weeks and this shows how incredibly underweight he had been.”

After four months in the care of the RSPCA Ronnie reached his ideal weight of 225kg.

“He proved to have quite the following on our Facebook page and our supporters were just incredible, they donated so many items for him such as rugs, fly masks, treats, enrichments and salt licks. We are incredibly grateful to our community for their donations and want to say a huge thank you to them,” said Charlotte.

“He had a massage kindly donated by Mary at Vitality Equine, who said some of his muscles were quite tight which would collaborate with the fact he was likely used as a driving pony, despite his young age.”

Ronnie was adopted by Kera Hodson and her mum Claire Preston, who have three other RSPCA rescue ponies.

“We saw Ronnie’s heartbreaking story on Facebook and knew we needed to help him. Kera set her heart on him and said ‘He’s coming home’,” said Claire.

“He has got a home for life and has slotted straight in. There’s always something very special about taking on a rescue and they know they have found their people. When we go to the field they all come running. To be abandoned and left – it breaks our heart to think what had happened.”

Claire said the family “can’t wait to celebrate Christmas” with Ronnie.

“He will be very spoiled just like his ‘siblings’ George, Splash and Shelly. They will have a special breakfast and lots of love,” she said.

Equine welfare charities reflect on the challenges of 2025 – as the number of owners giving up their horses increases

Financial challenges continue for horse owners, as equine welfare charities come under pressure too.

As 2025 comes to a close, charities have reflected on the year, citing rising costs across the board as an ongoing concern.

World Horse Welfare chief field officer Claire Gordon told H&H it had been a “challenging year”, exacerbated by the summer drought and its impact on forage yields.

“Charities are not immune from these challenges and the worrying impact we’re starting to feel is the resilience of the welfare sector shrinking – at a time when demand for our services is increasing,” she said.

“We’ve seen charities having to shut some of their centres, make redundancies, close to new intakes or decrease stocking levels to reduce running costs. Sadly, we’ve lost some charities who have closed permanently, finding the ever-increasing costs unsustainable.”

World Horse Welfare had rehomed 302 equines and taken in 200 by 30 November. Of the charity’s 2,200-plus rehomed horses and ponies, 155 were returned this year.

Ms Gordon reported that welfare cases involving large numbers of horses “continue to further deplete” rescue centres’ capacity.

“Some of the big operations have involved horses who have been sold or passed on by their owners to unknown fates, many later rescued from dealers and hoarding situations,” she said.

“We’ve also seen cases where owners and breeders have passed away or become very ill with no succession plan, leaving charities to pick up the pieces.”

This year Blue Cross launched a strategy, “designed to support private horse owners in times of need”. The charity took in 434 equines compared to 212 in 2024, the majority from private homes.

“There are many reasons owners are reluctantly having to relinquish their horses, but financial strain is the most common. Rising veterinary costs, combined with this year’s sharp increases in hay and straw prices, have placed significant pressure on households,” a Blue Cross spokesperson told H&H.

“To meet demand, the charity brings horses in for rehabilitation and rehoming, while also expanding its Home Direct scheme, which allows horses to remain in their homes while Blue Cross helps match them with new owners.”

Blue Cross reported a “dip” in rehoming figures, from 250 last year to 231 this year – thought to be “linked to the rising costs of hay, feed and winter care”.

By 30 November, Redwings had taken in 51 equines, down from 98 last year.

“While this is a big drop on recent years, this is unfortunately all the space we’ve had available. With around 1,200 existing residents, we must ensure we don’t compromise their continuing care over new intakes, and that has meant space has been very limited this year,” Redwings chief executive Lynn Cutress told H&H.

Redwings rehomed 93 horses and ponies by the end of November, compared to 88 in 2024.

“We are pleased these numbers have held steady and encourage anyone looking to take on a horse to consider Redwings, or another equine charity,” said Ms Cutress.

The RSPCA admitted 546 equines by 30 November and rehomed more than 200.

“2025 has been a challenging year for the RSPCA and other equine charities, as rising costs for hay, veterinary care and other essentials have driven up the cost of caring for horses. This comes at a time when the cost-of-living crisis continues to impact horse carers,” said RSPCA equine expert Mark Kennedy.

Hope after heartbreak as pony rescued with 70 other horses from ‘appalling conditions‘ finds his lifelong home for Christmas

A pony who was rescued from “appalling” conditions, with some 70 equids and 450 animals in total, has a new home in time for Christmas – and for good.

Will, whose problem with his jaw means he needed a specialist home, arrived at Redwings’ Caldecott centre in Norfolk this month, where he has a home for life. He was one of hundreds of animals removed from a large farm in November 2023, in a rescue operation involving more than 100 people from eight charities, with vets and police.

“There were 455 animals of 19 different species removed from appalling conditions in two fields, barns, outbuildings, sheds and filthy hutches,” a Redwings spokesperson said.

“Virtually all the animals had not received veterinary care, and several had to be put to sleep to end their suffering.

“Donkeys and horses were suffering from rotting feet without attention from a vet or a farrier, one donkey was so lame, she was put to sleep to end her suffering. Some were underweight, others had not received treatment for parasites or proper dental care.

“Over half the equines seized were in poor body condition. The floors of barns and enclosures were deep in faeces and stinking, mouldy forage. Most of the mares had mixed with stallions and were pregnant.”

A 52-year-old man from Nottinghamshire was jailed and banned from keeping animals for life in September, having pleaded guilty to 25 animal welfare offences. A 33-year-old woman from Nottinghamshire was given a suspended prison sentence and banned from keeping dogs for five years, having pleaded guilty to two offences.

Redwings’ head of welfare and behaviour Nic de Brauwere took part in the rescue.

“This was a very challenging two days working with often nervous and unhandled ponies and donkeys who were trapped in horrible living conditions,” he said.

“It was heartbreaking to see just how poor their quality of life was but being able to help them by supporting the humane catching, vet assessments and loading on to the many horseboxes, knowing they were heading to a much brighter future, was very rewarding.

“I’m pleased that one of the ponies I got to work with has his forever home with us here at Redwings.”

Mr de Brauwere explained that part of Will’s jaw is shorter than the other and his teeth do not meet as they should.

“He will therefore need close monitoring, regular dental check-ups and regular dental maintenance to live a happy and healthy life, all things which we are able to provide for him here at Redwings thanks to the generosity of our supporters,” he said.

“I’m happy to say that he’s settling in well at Redwings Caldecott where he’s sharing a field with another pony, Tyson, over the winter. He’ll be introduced to a bigger herd in the spring.”

Always the bridesmaid: rescued cob who watched others be rehomed stars at her new owner’s wedding

A rescued cob who may have felt she was always the bridesmaid as she repeatedly missed out on rehoming has performed just that duty for her new, loving owner.

Pumpkin, who was rescued in 2023 aged 15, spent more than 500 days at Blue Cross’s Burford rehoming centre “watching other horses get rehomed while she waited patiently for someone to fall in love with her”.

But last Christmas, Natalie King contacted the charity as her cob Domino had lost his best friend and was “struggling” on his own.

“Domino was absolutely miserable – he needed a friend and fast,” Natalie said. “I contacted Blue Cross and they matched us with Pumpkin who was looking for a home as a non-ridden companion. ‘She’s super-cool and just happy to be involved!’ they told me. Perfect!”

Natalie lives on 11 acres with a sheep, two pigmy goats and Domino, and plenty of room for Pumpkin.

“When they told me how long she’d been in their care, my heart went out to her,” Natalie said.

“Five days later Pumpkin arrived. I put her next door to Domino and after a quarantine period, they joined each other in the paddock. Happy days – they really liked each other. I was very relieved it was all so easy and that Domino was content again.”

Natalie said Pumpkin is an “angel pony”, who has not put a hoof wrong.

“When I call her name from the paddock gate, she trots over to me,” she said. “I’ve had Domino 15 years and he’s never once come when called! Pumpkin is so easy-going and polite. She’s a joy to have around.”

A few months later, Blue Cross Burford’s Bradley Moore-Taylor went to visit Pumpkin and Natalie, and “realising how happy Pumpkin was”, asked Natalie whether she would like to own her.

“And that wasn’t the only ‘Yes’ Natalie was saying,” a Blue Cross spokesperson said. “The following week she got married; Pumpkin’s legal ownership paperwork arrived the day before the wedding.”

Natalie explained that she and her husband Ben married in the village church and had the reception at home.

“The horses were very much part of the day, watching the goings-on from the paddock, and Pumpkin becoming officially mine just made it more special,” she said.

“Then my bridesmaid Siân said: ‘Pumpkin wondered if she could be a bridesmaid too.’ Sian had got her bridesmaid’s dress taken up and used the spare fabric to tie a bow in Pumpkin’s forelock.

“It was such a lovely gesture and Pumpkin looked gorgeous. So Siân and I had some official wedding photos taken with Pumpkin – girls together. Then my husband Ben and I had pictures with Pumpkin, Domino and ex-racehorse Benji (Old Beginnings), who had returned home from his retraining yard. The boys love their little sister!”

Ponies rescued ‘in bad shape’ given best possible care – but ‘not out of the woods’ yet

A group of ponies being treated for liver disease following their rescue are “not out of the woods yet” but continue to make progress at Redwings.

Two mares and their foals, along with another colt foal, were removed from Gelligaer Common in South Wales as part of a multi-agency operation between equine welfare charities.

A Redwings spokesperson said concerns had been raised about the ponies, and that in partnership with the Gelligaer and Merthyr Commons Association, they were removed as part of an ongoing project to “improve the welfare of the common’s herd”.

“Three-year-old mare Bonnie was in poor body condition and had separated from the rest of the herd along with her foal at foot, filly Tyler,” said the spokesperson.

“Colt Jones and his mother, who was very underweight, was with them. Very sadly after their arrival at Redwings, she had to be put down when her condition went downhill. Tom, another colt rescued on the same day, is a very similar age and the two have become firm friends.”

Nic de Brauwere, Redwings head of welfare and behaviour, said all the ponies have “a degree of liver disease”, and damage caused by worm burdens, which was “the main contributor to their poor condition”.

“Bonnie’s condition has improved thanks to veterinary treatment and care. Now they have responded enough to leave our arrival centre, all are benefiting from being out on our grass pastures,” he said.

“They’re not out of the woods and are receiving ongoing medication and close monitoring, but happily their prognosis is more positive.”

The ponies are living in their own herd at Redwings’ Hapton site, the charity’s headquarters.

“We have become skilled in dealing with feral ponies like this group in the 20-plus years we’ve been working at the common. This is something we can only do because of our amazing supporters whose donations are vital in us being able to offer a forever home to ponies like these,” said Mr de Brauwere.

“We’ve seen big improvements in how Bonnie, Tyler, Tom and Jones respond to us, but no matter how much or little progress they make in this respect, their future is secure, thanks to you.”

Severely neglected Friesian mule has ‘promise of a bright future’ after rescue

A severely neglected mule, the result of a Friesian bred with a donkey, has “the promise of a bright future” after undergoing life-saving surgery thanks to his rescuers.

This week the Horse Trust welcomed four-year-old mule Frank, who was rescued by Communities for Horses in Swansea.

A spokesperson for the Horse Trust said Frank was found in “an appalling condition”.

“Thanks to the compassion of a good samaritan and the swift action of Communities for Horses in Swansea, Frank was rescued from severe neglect, and the Horse Trust was asked to step in and take him into their ownership,” he said.

“His most urgent medical issue, a shocking and painful mass thought to have been likely caused by a botched and illegal castration attempt – or was potentially a tumour that had become dangerously infected. The nature of the injury and mass was deeply distressing and must have been causing him excruciating pain.”

Frank underwent surgery at Cotts Equine Hospital in Wales.

“The surgeon found he had two sarcoids in that site and a third on his face, so these were removed,” said the Horse Trust spokesperson.

“His secondary infection is responding well to antibiotics and the threat of a cancer that may have spread has been alleviated to the immense relief of all involved. If it had been such a cancer, Frank would have had to be euthanised.”

The spokesperson added that “despite his painful past, Frank has responded to kindness with gentleness”.

“He has bright white scars from inappropriate tethering, likely inflicted when he was very young, and overgrown hooves – both signs of prolonged neglect. And yet, he remains trusting, resilient, and affectionate,” he said.

Horse Trust chief executive Jeanette Allen said Frank’s story “is one of the most heartbreaking” the charity has encountered in recent years.

“No animal should ever suffer as he has,” she said. “He had us all extremely stressed waiting to hear if he had made it through surgery and to find out what the surgeon had discovered. It was awful knowing during that time we might lose him before we even got to meet him.

“We’re so grateful to everyone who has already supported young Frank’s journey and been part of his story so far. At only four years old, he needed to be given the life-saving chance of treatment and the guarantee of a safe home afterwards. Thanks to our wonderful donors, we can do that.”

A Communities for Horses spokesperson said: “We’re incredibly proud to be working alongside the Horse Trust to give Frank the very best chance at life. His ordeal was horrific, but thanks to swift, collaborative action, he now has hope, healing, and the promise of a brighter future.”

The Horse Trust has launched an emergency appeal to cover the £20,000 needed for Frank’s surgery, hospitalisation and long-term care.

“Thanks to our supporters we have already raised over £6,500, but there is still a long way to go,” said the Horse Trust spokesperson.

Second chances: horses rescued from neglect and abandonment bring joy as much-loved riding school members

A cob who was found abandoned in a stranger’s garden and is now a much-loved riding school horse is just one of 18 neglected equines thriving owing to a new partnership.

Bransby Horses has joined forces with the British Horse Society (BHS) as part of the latter’s Second Chance project. The scheme, which has already benefited 130 horses in collaboration with the RSPCA, involves rehoming rescued horses to BHS approved riding centres.

Since the launch of the Bransby partnership last November, 18 horses rescued by the charity have been rehomed to centres, and six more are awaiting transfer to their new homes. One of these is five-year-old Rex, who was found “severely neglected” in a garden, rescued and rehabilitated by Bransby, and is now part of the family at Peers Clough Packhorses in Lancashire.

The centre’s owner Chris Thomas said: “Rex settled down immediately. He has proved to be an instant hit with our wide age range of clientele and has comfortably taken to our Saturday groups of children.

“The collaboration between Bransby and the BHS has proved very successful for us as an approved centre, for Rex, who is happily settled, and for our clients who think he’s so cute.”

A BHS spokesperson said there has “never been more need” for this project, owing to the numbers of neglected and abandoned horses, and the challenges faced by riding schools. Rescued equines are carefully rehabilitated and assessed to ensure they are suitable for this pathway.

BHS head of business support Sarah Dale said: “Rex’s story perfectly captures why the Second Chance project is so important. Horses and ponies like Rex deserve a future where they are safe, loved and valued – and that’s exactly what this partnership makes possible. We are incredibly proud to be working alongside Bransby Horses and the RSPCA to give these wonderful animals the second chance they truly deserve.”

Bransby rehoming manager Natasha Brocklehurst added that the charity is delighted to be working on the project – and very proud of Rex.

“We’re so thankful to Peers Clough Packhorses for giving Rex a truly wonderful home where he can continue to thrive and bring joy and confidence to young riders,” she said.

Elderly mare ‘overlooked for her looks and age’ gets second chance in loving home

An elderly mare who had been “overlooked for her unique looks and age” has started her new life in a loving home.

Autumn came into the care of the Blue Cross rehoming centre in Burford in January 2024 after her owner was prosecuted by the RSPCA for neglect.

A Blue Cross spokesperson said Autumn, now 23, was found in a field in “very poor body condition with rain scald, and her spine, ribs and shoulders clearly visible through winter coat”.

Following the prosecution, Autumn joined Blue Cross to find the “loving new home she deserved”.

“Autumn was understandably a bit nervous when she arrived in our care. She was more people-oriented and not very horse-oriented initially – she didn’t know how to be a horse, and it’s clear she had spent more time around people than other horses,” said Lauren Bush, adoptions coordinator at the Blue Cross Burford centre.

“She was a favourite here as she’s such a sweet mare, and we especially liked the way her blaze falls, so it makes her face look wonky. She needed a lot of physiotherapy from the team as she was tight in her back. This could be due to poor breeding or could have been caused if she was used in harness in her previous home. The team used carrot stretches along with plenty of massages, stretches and exercises to help.”

After six months Autumn was transferred to a volunteer foster yard where she “blossomed” in a home environment with other horses.

“She thrived on routine and being in a good home environment in her foster yard but despite her sweet personality, Autumn was overlooked as a companion, most likely due to her size and age,” said Lauren.

This changed when Angharad Hadley-Stone and her sister Rhinannon were looking for a companion horse.

“We originally rehomed Autumn as we were looking for a quiet companion for our other older mare Perdy after she sadly lost her two field mates,” said Miss Stone.

“Autumn needed some time and space to settle but since she’s found her feet she’s really come out of her shell, and she is so lovely to have around. She is such a sweet-natured girl and watching her cheeky personality come out has been so nice to see. Autumn and Perdy have become two peas in a pod and we’re so grateful we could offer Autumn a place to call home with us.”

RSPCA head equine vet Roxane Kirton added that the charity is “delighted” to hear that Autumn has found a loving home.

“We are grateful to the team at Blue Cross for taking such wonderful care of her since her rescue,” said Ms Kirton.

“Her story is a great example of partnership working and how we can all do our bit for every kind, by working together for animal welfare.”

The perfect teacher: tiny pony rescued from neglect finds his niche training vet students

A rescued pony who is helping train vet students while enjoying life with his herd is being celebrated this World Veterinary Day today (26 April).

The theme of the day is “animal health takes a team”, and 14-year-old Welsh section A Redwings Zeus, who has a heart murmur, is part of the team at the University of Cambridge department of veterinary medicine.

“Zeus was rehomed to the department in January last year, after they approached Redwings looking for a friendly and safe-to-handle horse with a heart murmur to join their teaching herd,” a Redwings spokesperson said. “Zeus helps students learn to detect the condition, as well as provide general equine behaviour and handling experience.”

Zeus was rescued in 2014 with a donkey called Rio. Zeus had a large and untreated sarcoid and Rio such overgrown hooves, he could hardly walk, the spokesperson said. The owner was prosecuted and banned from keeping animals, and Rio and Zeus settled into their new home at Redwings’ Caldecott centre in Norfolk.

Rachel Angell, who leads the charity’s rehoming scheme, said: “When we heard what sort of pony the team at Cambridge were looking for, we thought Zeus was just the chap for the job!

“Although a pony with his health issue would have a home for life in the sanctuary, we knew the department of veterinary medicine would be perfectly placed to manage his condition.

“We are super proud of Zeus for his unique contribution to their team, and the role he is playing to help educate vets of the future.”

The spokesperson said Zeus has been a hit in his new home, with staff and students.

Samantha Stevens, large animal skills coordinator at the department, added: “We’re delighted to celebrate Zeus and what he brings to our team this World Veterinary Day. He settled into life here well and won us over quickly with his cheeky and kind personality.

“As well as helping to teach the diagnosis of heart murmurs, he helps students learn how to perform clinical examinations, as well as trot-ups, which are used to assess any possible lameness.

“When he’s not working in his teaching role, he is a much-loved member of our herd and enjoys spending time in the paddocks alongside his new friends.”

Meet the neglected mare turned ‘rocket pony’ who’s become part of the family

A mare who was rescued in a “significantly malnourished” state with an uncertain future has become a “rocket pony” who loves jumping and has become a family member.

As reported by Horse Network, Ulyssa was seized by law enforcement officers in the US in March 2023, from a home where she had been living alone in “less than ideal” conditions. Concerns had been raised about her welfare, and when her condition deteriorated, a vet examined her and gave her a body condition score of two out of nine.

The 13-year-old coloured mare went to Days End Farm Horse Rescue (DEFHR) in Woodbine, Maryland, where she “quickly thrived under DEFHR’s expert care and blossomed into a bright, engaging, and personable pony”.

DEFHR trainer Leigha Schrader said 13.2hh Ulyssa had little to no experience under saddle so she restarted her from the beginning.

“I loved working with Ulyssa and nicknamed her ‘Rocket Pony’,” Leigha said. “She was keen and always down for adventures and learning new skills.

“She was forward-thinking, and whenever I start ponies under saddle, I have kids in mind. Safety is my priority, and I always want to give ponies a solid foundation to help them succeed as safe, fun mounts for younger riders.”

Leigha worked with Ulyssa, slowly introducing her to jumping.

“She had scope and a knack for the work over fences,” she said. “I knew she would make a great pony jumper, eventer, or Pony Club mount. I started taking her offsite as much as I could to get her used to different environments. From schooling shows to cross-country to trail rides, I wanted to prepare Ulyssa for a competitive home and find a junior rider or small adult that was as bold as she was; someone looking for their next adventure.”

Teenager Samantha Everett and her mother Amy spotted Ulyssa’s adoption listing titled “Meet Rocket Pony” online, and “fell in love with her right off the bat”. They drove five hours to meet her, in December 2023.

“The search for a perfect horse was a challenge as we looked at many,” said Amy. “When Samantha rode Ulyssa, it was like they were meant to be together. Her size, markings, and disposition were what sold us; she was the perfect pony for our family.”

Leigha said she was proud to have handed over Ulyssa’s reins to Samantha, 14, in January 2024, adding: “They have been having a blast together!”

Samantha said Ulyssa is a very forward pony, who “loves her job”, and her favourite thing is jumping but she also likes hacking out.

“Ulyssa also loves her home and her herd, as well as jumping, eating, and rolling,” she added. “She has made an impact on our family with her friendly hugs and fist bumps with her muzzle. We thoroughly enjoy her company and look forward to spending many more years with her.

“DEFHR is an amazing organization that really cares about its horses. I would recommend them to anyone looking to adopt.”

‘By the way, clean your teeth!’ Dental practice welcomes rare twin donkey foals

When Mark and Tina Boulcott agreed to take in some rescued donkeys to add to their menagerie, they thought they were getting four of them.

But it soon appeared that two were pregnant – and one popped out twin foals, within half an hour.

Twins are very rare in donkeys than in horses, and there is a low rate of survival. But Cocoa’s colt and filly, Eddie and Edith, are doing very well at a fortnight old, dentist Dr Boulcott told H&H this week. Both are about the same size as Mocha’s filly Elenor, who was born two days later as a single foal.

“I’m quite a good midwife of horses now!” he said. “We’d been watching the donkeys on cameras for ages, and she looked like a pig on stilts; she was so huge, we thought it must be any time. Then that night, we checked the cameras, and there were two things next to her; it had only been half an hour.

“We rushed out, and saw the two foals, and thought maybe they’d both given birth at the same time.”

But Mocha was still pregnant, and there was only one placenta.

“So obviously it was just one birth, but two donkeys,” Dr Boulcott said.

“We thought ‘Fair enough, we’ve got twins’. Then the vet came the next day, and said ‘Oh my god, you’ve got twin donkeys; I’ve never heard of such a thing’, we didn’t realise the significance of it. He contacted the local paper and it’s gone ballistic.”

The twins’ story has been shared across the internet and social media, and Dr Boulcott said he was surprised by the huge interest.

“But they are cute,” he said. “Technically they’re triplets now, because the other donkey, two days later, gave birth to her single foal. They were best friends, the two mothers; we had to separate them during the birth but now they’re out in the fields in the daytime and all three of them foals are skipping around together, then they come back in and go to their respective stables at night.”

Dr Boulcott explained that his dental practice funds the couple’s menagerie of rescued animals at their 100-acre Bunkers Hill Farm in Pembrokeshire, where Mrs Boulcott also produces Clydesdales with their Oakenfold prefix.

As well as the donkeys, there are 19 horses, six dogs, seven pigs and three cows, not to mention the peacock, and the eight emus – “although the males are sitting on their eggs at the moment so ask me that again in a few days’ time” – Dr Boulcott said.

And what better way could there be to persuade people to visit the dentist, if said dentist has all these animals?

“We write newsletters to our patients; about what you need to do to get clean teeth, and nobody bothers opening it,” Dr Boulcott said. “But when you put a picture of a snowman with a set of dentures, or of the two small sausage dogs that live in the practice, people see it.

“So we talk about the animals, then they engage, and we can add ‘And by the way, clean your teeth’. They’ll open up and engage with the animals, and you have to sneak in the teeth thing. And that’s fine, to be honest. I’d rather write about animals in any case, as teeth are rather boring!”

‘You can’t put it into words’: rescue pony who shone at dressage wins at first driving show

A rescue pony and a young boy who have taken the dressage world by storm have turned their focus to driving – and won at their first competition together.

H&H has previously reported on RSPCA George, who was born in RSPCA care, and Theo Charnley, who have won countless classes and championships together between the white boards.

But as Theo will grow and 12hh George will not, the plan had long been to try driving once Theo got too big to ride him.

And this has proved a success; although Theo is yet to grow too tall; the pair won their first competition, at Chester Driving Trials on 8 March.

“They love it,” Theo’s dad Paul Charnley told H&H. “Theo was a bit nervous at first but then realised they had the same partnership – their partnership is amazing – and I think they almost feel more together driving than riding.

“You’ve still got feel, down the reins, but you’re seeing the horse from a different perspective. He loves that, and the fact he can trust George and have fun with him.”

Paul said the idea first came when the family went to the London International Horse Show a couple of years ago and saw the World Cup driving.

“Last year, Theo was lent a driving pony for a couple of competitions and someone mentioned that next summer is the junior driving European Championships in Romania,” Paul said. “We thought that was crazy; who takes a dressage pony, turns it into a driving pony and then takes it to the Europeans?”

But the plan took root. Paul said he and his wife Sarah had thought Theo would have outgrown George by the end of last year, which would have given them 18 months before the championships.

“We knew his dressage would be good enough but that he’d need time to get used to the cones and marathon phases,” Paul said. “So we thought we’d stop dressage and concentrate on driving – but Theo hasn’t grown!”

And, Paul added, as George and Theo have been enjoying and succeeding in dressage so much, they changed plans to do both at the same time.

“You’d think they’re totally different sports but the dressage phase is the same, you’re just sitting behind them instead of on top,” he said. “Just before Christmas, we started the process. You start with them pulling a tyre, then we moved on to a carriage. And typical George, he did it all; if he hadn’t been born in RSPCA care, you’d have been sure he’d done it before.”

With practice, and help from international driver Frank Campbell, who lives nearby, George was soon driving well, and Paul took him to his first competition, where they came second.

“He was awesome,” he said. “He was a bit too slow in the cones and marathon as we took it steady but he won the dressage phase. Then with Theo last week, he was fabulous. To no surprise, George’s dressage training was put to good use as they took the award for the best score of the day. In the cones section, the twisty course suited George wonderfully, picking up 10 penalties for going too fast. Come the obstacles phase, they motored around, finishing 83 points ahead of second place.”

And as well as the dressage benefiting the driving, Paul said, it was put into action in its traditional sense between the two competitions, as Theo and George went to the British Dressage Winter Regional Championship at Little Mill EC, where they won in the prelim silver and came third in the novice silver freestyle, securing their tickets to the British Dressage NAF Five Star Winter Championships next month.

“So between the two driving shows, he won at the regionals, then in three weeks he’s off to Addington for the winter championships,” said Paul. “That’s pretty cool.

“We got George as a pony for Theo to hack and pet, no intention of doing any competing. When we were backing him people said ‘You’ll never get anything out of that pony’ as Theo would outgrow him too quickly.”

The aim is for George and Theo to enjoy both disciplines this year, while Theo’s bigger pony Jerry, also an RSPCA rescue, does some in-hand showing as he matures.

Asked to sum George up, Paul said: “Without crying? You can’t put it into words, can you?

“People say ‘pony of a lifetime’ too often, I think. But he is very special.”

Horses ‘restore boy’s faith in human kindness’ – and save his life

The life of a young man called Charlie has been saved, and his future changed thanks to a rescued horse called Alfie, his “best friend”.

Alfie is one of the equine participants in welfare charity HorseWorld’s Discovery programme, which involves rescued horses and vulnerable young people.

During children’s mental health week (3-9 February), the Bristol charity is “shining a light on the transformative power of horses in supporting young people’s mental well-being”.

“For 12-year-old Charlie, this unique programme has been nothing short of life-saving,” a HorseWorld spokesperson said. “After being out of school for three years due to the challenges of autism and ADHD, Charlie was struggling with his mental health and had even felt suicidal. But that all changed when he began attending Discovery sessions at HorseWorld in January 2024.”

Charlie’s mother Rachel said the programme had “given him his life back”.

“He was really poorly from lots of trauma and unmet SEND needs in school. He had been failed time and time again by adults and therapists, but since coming here, he’s gained confidence, a purpose, and a reason to be alive. He has developed an absolute love for horses and animals, and he’s formed a great bond with Kayleigh and the other facilitators. It has restored his faith in human kindness.”

Charlie has a particularly close relationship with Archie, the spokesperson said.

“Archie is my best friend,” said Charlie. “He understands people, I think. And he loves hugs.

“At first, I was a bit scared of horses, but then I found a love for them. One day, I let go of Archie’s lead rope, and he just followed me without me calling him. It was amazing!”

Charlie is now preparing to move to an independent specialist school, which Rachel had never thought would be possible.

“There is a farm at his new school, and everything he has learned at HorseWorld will help him settle in,” she said. “This programme has completely changed his future.”

Some 300 young people take part in the Discovery programme every year. The aim is to provide a “safe, non-judgmental space where they can develop confidence, build relationships, and improve their mental well-being”.

“The programme is particularly vital for those struggling with social, emotional, and mental health challenges or at risk of exclusion,” the spokesperson said.

Kayleigh Sivier, a Discovery facilitator who has worked closely with Charlie, was recently nominated by him for a SEND (special educational needs and disabilities) superstar award, for education professionals who make a profound difference.

“I nominated Kayleigh because she is one of the kindest and funniest people I know,” Charlie said. “She helps me feel confident, independent, and she believes in me.”

Making memories: foal of mare rescued from Wellingborough thrives as child’s loved pony

The foal of a mare who was rescued in a “sorry state” and terrified of people is thriving and “making amazing memories” as a child’s pony in her forever home.

Clover, formerly known as Rainbow, was born to Dove, one of 43 ponies rescued from flooded fields in Wellingborough in a multi-agency operation nearly five years ago.

H&H reported on the major rescue in 2020; the ponies, mainly mares and foals, were in poor condition and much of the land was under water. Blue Cross took in 11 of them, whom they named after rivers as they were rescued from floods by the river Nene.

When Blythe, Arun, Dove, Soar, Tweed, Eden, Nidd, Ribble, Hipper, Cole and Nene arrived at Blue Cross, a spokesperson for the charity said, they were all blood-tested and screened for strangles.

“This was no mean feat because the ponies were unhandled and fearful,” she added.

“They were particularly worried about Dove, who was in a sorry state, petrified of human contact and heavily in foal, so they ran a full blood profile on her just to be sure. Luckily, she had no significant health issues, but they recognised she needed more training so they could provide the necessary veterinary care for her and her foal when the time came.”

The spokesperson said some of the ponies were emaciated and “riddled with lice”. They were treated, wormed and vaccinated and as “it appeared that none of them had had any foot care or dental work in their lifetimes, these procedures were carried out as soon as it was safe to do so”.

Dove gave birth to a foal, Rainbow, who “grew into a lovely filly”. Once she was weaned, the mare went to a new private home as a companion, “which is perfect for her”. Rainbow went on a private short-term loan until she was four, when she came back to Blue Cross to be rehomed permanently as a riding pony.

“In January 2025, Rainbow found her new forever home with a loving family who were wanting to take her through the backing process for their children, and have renamed her Clover,” the spokesperson said.

“Clover’s new home fell in love with her character and she has a lovely bond with their daughter, who will be riding her. Clover is showing she will be a great child’s riding pony. Her new owner, Laura Jane, said: ‘Clover has fitted in extremely well. She loves her new best friend Aria and is making loads of amazing memories.’”

Blue Cross horse adoptions coordinator Verity Anderton-Johnson said she was there when Rainbow was born.

“To see the little foal whose mum came to us extremely nervous and in poor condition, to now being a great child’s pony and thriving in her new home is just wonderful and makes our job so rewarding.”

Two ‘forgotten’ cobs prompt rescue team to speak out about rise in horse abandonments

Two coloured cobs “left behind and forgotten” have been given the second chance they deserve – as welfare charity warns horse abandonments are on the rise.

Geldings Maximus and Bruno were being kept on rented land when their owners “vanished without a trace”. The pair have since been taken in by HAPPA.

“For some time, the kind landowners did their best to look after them, but as time passed, it became clear they began to struggle to meet the horses’ needs,” said a HAPPA spokesperson.

“A caring neighbour stepped in and contacted us and as soon as the cry for help was received our equine inspectors came to the aid of the two neglected horses.”

HAPPA’s head of equine operations Amanda Berry said what the inspectors found was “heartbreaking”, and Maximus and Bruno were in “desperate need of professional care”.

“Using the Control of Horses Act 2015, we were able to step in and bring them both to safety. Their hooves were overgrown, their teeth needed urgent attention and they were both overweight from a poor diet,” she said.

“But despite everything they had been through, their spirits remained strong. Now they’re beginning their journey to recovery with our expert care team looking after them every step of the way.”

Ms Berry added that the team believe that Maximus and Bruno, both thought to be 12, will make a full recovery and find forever homes through HAPPA’s rehoming scheme.

“Their story is a powerful reminder of the responsibility that comes with owning horses. Abandoning animals not only leaves them vulnerable but also places a heavy burden on those left to care for them. At HAPPA, we’re here to make sure no horse is forgotten, but we can’t do it alone,” she said.

The spokesperson added that horse abandonment is on the rise.

“HAPPA is facing an abandonment epidemic; and the charity will continue to be a safety net for those that need us the most.”

Shetland pony who ‘bears the scars of her past’ begins happy new year

A Shetland pony who “still bears the scars of her past” has started the new year happy and healthy.

Marjorie, thought to be around 11, was rescued by police in December 2023, when she was found roaming close to a busy area of Harlow, Essex.

Police were unable to find Marjorie’s owner, and after she was treated by a vet at a holding yard, she was taken in by Redwings.

“She was very nervous, had injuries from improper tethering – the scars from which she still bears today – and a painful mouth caused by problems with her teeth,” said a Redwings spokesperson.

Marjorie joined two other Shetlands, Matty and Tiny, who had also recently arrived at Redwings, and the three became “fast friends”.

“Marjorie needed somewhere she could recover from her injuries and receive the ongoing dental care she needed, and with our amazing in-house horse hospital we knew we could help,” said Jo Franklin, Redwings senior field officer and the charity’s Ada Cole Centre manager.

“Over the weeks, Marjorie became used to being checked and cared for and when she was vaccinated for equine flu and tetanus, she showed signs that she was overcoming her nerves around people, which was amazing to see.”

Last September Redwings staff noticed Marjorie had nasal discharge, and an X-ray and dental examination showed her “problem teeth” were the likely source of a sinus infection.

“A diseased tooth was extracted from the back of her jaw and over the following weeks regular treatment from our wonderful vet nursing team also helped to clear the infection,” said Redwings head of veterinary and care Nicky Jarvis.

“Marjorie was relaxed about the whole experience and has made a good recovery from treatment.”

The spokesman said that Marjorie has started 2025 “happy and healthy”.

“She is back with her friends at Ada Cole, thanks to the specialist sanctuary care provided by Redwings and donations from the charity’s supporters, which make it all possible,” he said.

Rescued ponies ‘terrified of humans’ given ‘a second chance at a happy life’

Two rescue ponies have been given a second chance at a happy life after finding a home in time for Christmas.

Pretzel and Peanut were rescued as part of a multi-agency operation involving 25 ponies from Gelligaer Common, in Wales, in July 2023.

HorseWorld, who took Pretzel and Peanut in, said the pair were “completely unhandled, terrified of humans, and in terrible condition”.

“This group of ponies really was one of the most challenging our team have dealt with,” said HorseWorld’s head of equine welfare Sarah Hollister.

“The ponies were so scared of people; they would literally try to climb the walls to get away from you. Sometimes we doubted if we’d ever be able to get them happy with even the gentlest of human touch.”

Pretzel and Peanut lived in a field close to the charity’s rehab yard where they could become accustomed to “comings and goings”, and feel more comfortable with “normal life”. With time and careful training sessions, they became trusting of the HorseWorld grooms.

In November this year two-year-old Pretzel and three-year-old Peanut were rehomed together to start their “new chapter”.

“This story is the epitome of what HorseWorld is all about. We believe every horse deserves a second chance at a happy life,” said Jo Coombs, HorseWorld chief executive.

“There were times when the future of these ponies was in doubt, but our horse-centred rehabilitation and retraining programme and the skills, expertise, patience and dedication of our teams means Peanut and Pretzel are now facing a future even brighter than we could have hoped.

“We wish them and their new family a very happy Christmas.”

Mare ‘flies the flag’ for rescue ponies and creates ‘everlasting friendship’ with young rider

As 2024 comes to an end, equine welfare charity HorseWorld has shone the light on one of its successful rehoming cases, who went on to wow in the show ring this year with her young rider.

Aura was taken in by HorseWorld in 2020 following one of the biggest multi-agency operations in the UK ever, involving 130 neglected horses and ponies rescued from “appalling conditions”.

A HorseWorld spokesperson said Aura was very nervous, severely underweight and suffering from a worm burden and lice infestation. But thanks to expert care from the charity’s team she went on to make a full recovery.

“During her rehabilitation the team identified that the sweet-natured Aura could be suited to work with vulnerable young people as an equine-assisted learning horse, so they started her training to help children cope with social, mental and emotional challenges,” said the spokesperson.

“At the same time they started looking for a suitable foster home where Aura would reach her full potential and help a young person to reach theirs too.”

This home was found with Elizabeth Hembrow and her daughter Coco.

“Since she came to live with us, Aura and Coco have formed a beautiful bond and an everlasting friendship,” said Elizabeth.

“Coco suffers from obsessive compulsive disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and struggles with mainstream education. Aura helps her cope and face life’s challenges.”

Coco and Aura have attended Pony Club rallies, competed in dressage and enjoyed fun rides and gallops across the Mendips “where they love unwinding together”.

This summer they “wowed the crowds and judges” at the Royal Bath and West Show (30 May-1 June).

“Going to the Royal Bath and West show was a big step up for Coco and Aura. The show had a real buzz about it and I was very nervous for them both but every time I checked in with Coco to see how she was feeling she just said ‘I’m fine Mum, I know Aura is the best pony here and I trust her 100%’. She was incredible and I am so proud of them both,” said Elizabeth.

“Aura has stolen our hearts. She is simply perfect and we couldn’t love her any more or imagine life without her.”

HorseWorld chief executive Jo Coombs said the charity loves seeing its rescued horses and ponies thriving in new homes.

“We’re thrilled that Aura has found her perfect home with Coco and that the pair are so successfully flying the flag for HorseWorld rescued horses and others around the UK,” she said.

“We feel an enormous amount of pride in the work we do at HorseWorld seeing these horses, who often have a very sad past, flourish in their new homes.”

‘Living her best life now’: pony who jumped through fire in a circus has brighter future

A pony who is believed to have jumped through rings of fire in a circus is one of those who has a home for life at the Mare and Foal Sanctuary.

The welfare charity’s Christmas appeal focuses on one of its core aims, to provide lifelong care for horses in need. Many of those taken in are rehomed with knowledgeable carers but some have complex needs, so stay at the sanctuary.

One of these is Chesney, a 21-year-old Dartmoor hill pony who came into the charity’s care in 2018.

“Very little is known about her past, but the sanctuary was told that she was once a circus pony who jumped through hoops of fire, indicating a traumatic history,” a spokesperson for the charity said.

“Her handlers say Chesney is an anxious pony who is frightened by sudden movements or noises, and she doesn’t like anything to be close behind her. For these reasons they feel Chesney can never be rehomed. She will remain with the sanctuary for the rest of her life with ponies she has bonded with and will receive all the specialist care she needs.”

In 2020, two sarcoids were found on Chesney’s hindquarters, and she needed laser surgery twice to remove them. Both times, she has made a good recovery.

Chesney’s handler Mhaya Holloway said she loves seeing Chesney enjoying life at the sanctuary’s Yelverton Moorland Rescue facility on Dartmoor.

“Fire for horses is particularly scary,” she said. “We feel, because of her reactions around her hind end, she was very much pushed into it. [We suspect] she had a job, and she had to get it done.

“She loves it here. All her care is met, all her needs. She’s got her best mates here with her, and just knowing she’s always going to be in a safe place, for us, it puts your mind at ease. It’s so nice to know that every day you come in she’s going to have the same people looking after her. You’re never going to worry about what she is or isn’t doing because she’s here with us all the time. She’s living her best life really, she’s really happy.”

Mhaya added that what makes the sanctuary special is the lifelong and year-round care it provides.

“We do little surprises for them obviously at Christmas, but we just try to make their life as enriched and as full as we can, so that they can go on to live a long, healthy, happy life. They’ll always be in our hearts and on our minds no matter what.”

The charity’s director of fundraising and communications Dawn Vincent said all the Mare and Foal Sanctuary’s work is possible thanks to supporters’ generosity.

“It’s important to make life worth living for these horses and ponies who were once frightened and unloved. They have a safe and peaceful home this Christmas thanks to the kindness and generosity of our fantastic supporters.”

‘Stars in their own right’ Taylor and Swift are reunited in a loving home

As their namesake comes to the end of her global tour, rescued mother and daughter Taylor and Swift have been reunited in a “happy herd”.

The Redwings pair are living together in Hertfordshire with Sally Jones, who took in Taylor in 2022 and has now rehomed Swift.

“Their famous namesake even played a crucial part in their reunion, as Redwings shared a Taylor Swift-themed rehoming post across social media platforms,” a spokesperson for the charity said. “The post called on ‘Swifties’ to help Redwings Swift, a nine-year-old cob mare, find her new Love Story and Speak Now by filling in the Blank Space on her rehoming application form.

“The post was spotted by Sally Jones, who was already guardian of Redwings Taylor, Swift’s mum, and she reached out to reunite mother and daughter.”

Taylor was rescued and taken to Redwings as a five-year-old in 2015, having been found very underweight and “in urgent need of treatment”, the spokesperson said.

The charity’s vet Nicola Berryman, who cared for Taylor at the time, said: “Taylor was extremely dull and lethargic. She was emaciated and her ribs, spine and hip bones were prominent. Her skin was rubbed raw in places and her coat was falling out due to a severe lice infestation. Tests also revealed that she was pregnant.

“Taylor Swift had just performed at BBC Radio 1’s One Big Weekend down the road in Norwich, so they were deliberately named after the singer!”

Four months after her rescue, Taylor gave birth to Swift and the pair were rehomed separately two years ago but Swift’s guardian’s circumstances changed and the charity sought a new home for her.

Sally said: “Swift has settled in well in her new home and seems to be loving being back with her mum. After losing my elderly horse, our herd had space for another, and I was delighted to be able to reunite Taylor and Swift. Between them they are both excellent companions for my 30-year-old Harry, and together they make a very happy herd.”

Redwings head of Norfolk operations Rachel Angell added: “It’s a pleasure to see Taylor and Swift happily reunited and being fantastic companion ponies. Whilst not all our ponies share their names with global superstars like Taylor Swift, we know they are all stars in their own right.”

He loves it’: neglected yearling rescued by RSPCA wins prestigious eventing title 10 years later

“Rescue horses can”, is the message from the rider of a horse who was found as a malnourished, wounded yearling, and who won the 2024 Cotswold Cup 90cm championship.

RSPCA Kastone and Bethan-May Greave finished on their dressage score on 30 September to take the series final. Bethan-May told H&H that had she been told what Kastone would go on to do, when she collected him as an 18-month-old, “I never would have believed it”.

Bethan-May first heard of Kastone when she bumped into the head of rehoming for the RSPCA.

“He said ‘I’ve got the perfect horse for you’; I went to see him and he was lovely,” she said. “But then I broke my ankle and couldn’t take him on. Three or four months later, he was still available but they said they were saving him for a TV show.

“He appeared on ITV’s Give a Pet a Home so I had to go on TV but I got him. After a six-month trial, they signed him over to me and I’ve had him ever since.”

Bethan-May said Kastone was found shut in a barn with other youngsters, skinny, wounded and “living in poo”.

“When I took him on, they thought he’d get to about 14.2/15hh and be maybe a companion or a happy hacker,” she said. “We thought he could hack or nanny the babies but he just grew and grew – and he’s turned out to be a little superstar.”

Kastone’s delayed growth may have been owing to his lack of appropriate nutrition early on, Bethan-May said, and may have caused other issues.

“He had to have tendon surgery a few years ago,” she said. “He was about 1/10 lame and we investigated but couldn’t get to the bottom of it so they went in with a camera and found a tiny longitudinal tear. They repaired it and he did a year of rehab and hacking, and came back better.”

Kastone, who eventually grew to 17hh and is now 11, did not do too much as a youngster but it soon became apparent what he enjoyed.

“He absolutely loves jumping,” Bethan-May said. “We just thought we’d see what he could do. He qualified for the Cotswold Cup in limited outings and I knew he had the potential to win but it was whether he and I could hold it together on the day.

“He normally does a good dressage test, if he doesn’t get excited and do a random flying change or buck because he’s having a good time, and he can go a bit green across country. He’s absolutely brilliant showjumping but with all the marquees and distractions, sometimes his concentration goes to them rather than the fences, and the pressure was unreal.

“It was so exciting to win; I cried and cried because I was so proud of him. He loves being in front; I talk to him and had said ‘We’re in the lead and if you want to lead the lap of honour, you need to jump clear’. I think he listened because he loved doing the lap of honour! That was his favourite part of the day as he loves a crowd.”

Bethan-May said she hopes Kastone’s story might show what rescue horses and ponies can do.

“Even though he had such a poor start in life, such a hard time, it hasn’t limited him,” she said. “He’s able to go out and do all this, and he loves it. That’s why I do it.”

‘He’s a bit famous’ – rescue pony steps in to help young rider take national title

A rescued pony stepped in at the last minute to help a young rider to a dream win in the national para endurance championship.

Alfie-Jay Errington won the 23km Endurance GB Emerald Championship with Redwings Milky Way, a 20-year-old Welsh pony who has been taking part in endurance rides for over a decade with his rehomers Niamh and Sarah Richardson.

“Niamh Richardson, 16, and her mum Sarah were attending the Lion’s Tail Endurance Ride in Leicestershire on 24 September when they heard that Alfie-Jay was sadly unable to take part in Endurance GB’s para endurance national championships because his pony was lame,” a spokesperson for Redwings said.

“Not wanting Alfie to miss his shot at the championship, Niamh offered Alfie the ride on Redwings Milky Way.”

Sarah rode alongside Alfie-Jay and Milky Way, who were victorious.

Alfie-Jay’s mother Sophie Errington said: “Alfie has learning difficulties that make life a little hard to handle for him at times, but he has found his sport in endurance as everyone is so kind and understanding. All he had talked about for a month was the para championships, and we are so grateful for the kindness of Niamh and Sarah, and Redwings Milky Way, who is such a beautiful and understanding pony, for the fact he was still able to take part. For them to win was just a bonus.”

Milky Way was one of a large group of ponies rescued by Redwings from common land in Wales in 2004.

“Due to problems with indiscriminate breeding, overpopulation, disease and malnutrition, the ponies faced a challenging future on the commons,” the spokesperson said, adding that Redwings and others rescued all the ponies in need.

Sarah Richardson said Milky Way is very experienced, so she and Niamh knew he would look after Alfie-Jay.

“Lots of riders passing us were calling out to Milky Way, and Alfie asked me why,” she said.

“I explained that he’s a bit famous after his long and successful endurance career and Alfie loved that! Alfie regularly competes in Superman or Batman colours, and it was Superman that day – which felt especially apt as Redwings Milky Way saved the day!”

The Richardsons also rehomed Redwings Heron, a 30-year-old pony who has been part of the family since 2010.

‘She won our hearts’: severely neglected rescue pony put down after two years of love

A “sweet, courageous” Shetland who was rescued from one of the worst cases of neglect a charity has ever seen has died after a final two years of love and care.

The Mare and Foal Sanctuary announced that Poppy had to be put down owing to serious dental issues.

Poppy was one of 13 horses and ponies rescued from a community interest company in summer 2022.

“Many of the equines were in a very poor state,” a spokesperson for the charity said. “Their bones showed through their skin. Some ponies were showing signs of severe depression and sadly, one thoroughbred cross, Mollie, didn’t survive.”

H&H reported on the case early this year when those responsible were sentenced in court.

“When Poppy came to us, she was extremely underweight, scoring just one out of five as her body condition score,” the spokesperson said. “She was suffering from lice and worms, which were causing chronic internal inflammation. She also had cuts and scabs, and seriously overgrown hooves that meant she was wobbly when she walked. She had suffered long-term neglect, and her basic needs had not been met for a long time.

“Poppy was extremely timid and although our sanctuary care team worked hard to reassure her and build her confidence around dental treatment, she remained nervous. A full dental examination revealed many issues that would have been causing Poppy pain, and our expert vets set to work correcting Poppy’s teeth, removing several earlier this year. After further serious problems with her remaining teeth, we made the very difficult decision that it was kinder not to continue treatment.”

Sanctuary manager Saskia Joesbury said the team was devastated to lose Poppy.

“She was such a sweet and courageous girl who completely won our hearts,” she said.

“There were times we could see the effort she was making to be brave, and we’re so proud of her for showing so much courage after what must have been a terrible existence. She would often run to the gate to wait for us because she loved cuddles and scratches, and she gave us many signs that she enjoyed her time in the fields with her companions Sherbert and Lola.

“We’re glad to have been able to give Poppy a great deal of love and care in the last two years of her life. Every horse or pony in our care leaves a hoofprint in our hearts and we all hope Poppy felt loved and valued at the end.”

Mare and Foal Sanctuary director of fundraising and communications Dawn Vincent said Poppy’s story had captured the hearts of many.

“I’ve been working with equines for more than 25 years and have seen some shocking welfare cases, but the Family Nest rescue affected us deeply,” she said.

“Some of our senior welfare advisors described it as the worst example of neglect they had ever experienced. The sanctuary’s care team and vets worked around the clock to treat and rehabilitate all the horses and ponies that we rescued and spent a lot of time getting to understand their needs. We’ll always work in the best interests of each individual pony, and it was clear that the extensive dental work Poppy needed due to years of neglect would have been extremely distressing for her.

“We know that Poppy’s final two years with us were filled with the best care at our peaceful Honeysuckle Sanctuary in Newton Abbot.”

The spokesperson said it is owing to supporters’ generosity that horses and ponies like Poppy can be rescued and given “the love, dignity, and respect they deserve”.

“Thank you for making a difference to Poppy’s life,” she said.

How RSPCA George is proving rescue ponies can with his multi-faceted career

Standing at just 12hh, RSPCA George may be small but he certainly is mighty – especially when he’s sharing the LeMieux National Dressage Championships collecting ring with horses of a far bigger stature.

The diminutive piebald cob, whose dam was rescued from the roadside while she was pregnant with him, continues to make waves on the national dressage scene alongside his 11-year-old pilot, Theo Charnley.

The duo attended no less than nine championships last year. As well as adding two intro titles to their trophy cabinet, Theo and George also made the step up to novice. A trip to the unaffiliated Carnival of Dressage at Aintree this year paid off, as they came home with the novice sash.

Speaking at the National Dressage Championships on Thursday (12 September), where Theo and George scored a respectable 69.14% in the The Centre Line preliminary silver championship, dad Paul Charnley told H&H it’s been a race against the clock to reach Theo’s dressage milestones.

“We thought Theo was going to grow out of George at the end of last year and he wouldn’t go much beyond intro. But then we realised Theo wasn’t growing too much and kind of hit the reset button. We said ‘OK, we are actually going to do novice next year. We needed to put a lot of work in. You really have to step up.’ A lot of hard work has gone on behind the success.”

At home, Theo’s been working on getting George “more supple and active” in his way of going. The young rider once again impressed all three judges with his riding position, achieving his highest scores in those collective marks.

After he took the National Dressage Championships centre line today, Theo told H&H he “wasn’t worried”.

“It was nice to ride down there and to achieve coming here – we’ve been very busy,” he said.

Having gone further in dressage than they thought possible, Theo and Paul have been looking ahead to the future with George and are gunning for success in an entirely different discipline – driving.

“Theo started driving with the British squad and did a couple of camps at the start of this year,” explained Paul. “At some point we’ll have to say Theo is too big, so it is time to come off George. The European Driving Championships are in Romania in two years time, so we’re really hoping to qualify, but we’ll see.

“I don’t know if anyone’s ever been mad enough to go from dressage to driving. But Theo’s represented England in the British Dressage Youth Home Nations Championships – I certainly think he’d be the only one to go on to represent Great Britain in driving too.

“So, let the amazing story continue!”

Pony found in ‘shocking state’ beside dead companion makes full recovery

A starved pony found in a “shocking state” beside his dead field companion has made a full recovery – and their owner has been banned from keeping equines.

Shane Paul Sims, 36, of Gilpin Close, Kingswood, Bristol, was sentenced at Bristol Magistrates’ Court on 5 August, after pleading guilty to two animal welfare offences

Between 2 November and 4 December 2023 Sims caused unnecessary suffering to ponies Soul and Denz, and between 2 October and 4 December 2023 he failed to meet the ponies’ needs.

An RSPCA spokesperson said concerns were raised about the two ponies to the charity by callers, who reported that one pony was dead and the other “very underweight”, on land in Westerleigh, Gloucestershire.

When RSPCA officers arrived they found Denz dead, and Soul with his “bones visible”. There was no evidence of supplementary feeding or hay in the muddy field.

A vet report stated that Soul’s poor body condition score showed he “may have been on an unacceptable diet, especially for a young horse”.

“This will have led to hunger, muscle breakdown, lethargy and potentially poor development. It is estimated that this weight loss and associated suffering caused by the aforementioned will have occurred over a period of approximately two months,” the report said.

The vet found that Soul had thrush, caused by standing in wet conditions and lack of routine hoof care. He had a worm burden, but “showed nothing abnormal to account for the body condition aside from prolonged starvation”.

The RSPCA spokesman said a post-mortem exam showed that Denz “was starved and had a high worm burden”.

The vet said that it was their opinion that Denz “had suffered”.

“Although it is impossible to say a specific time, I do not believe an animal could have reached a state of such emaciation within less than one month. In terms of what suffering Denz would have felt, I am confident that this would not have been a comfortable experience,” they said.

RSPCA inspector Dan Hatfield, who investigated the case, thanked the members of the public who raised concerns about Soul’s welfare, “enabling his rescue”.

“There is never an excuse to leave animals to suffer. Owners have a duty and responsibility to ensure the needs of their animals are met, this includes making sure they have a suitable diet and the care they need to stay healthy,” he said.

“When Soul was rescued he was in a shocking state. It was heartbreaking to see him in such an awful condition alongside his dead friend. Thankfully he’s now recovered and looking amazing after getting the help and care he needed.”

In mitigation, it was said that “this was not deliberate cruelty” by Sims. He had no knowledge of horses and knew he should have done more.

Sims was banned from keeping equines for 10 years, and this cannot be appealed for eight years. He was given an 18-week prison sentence, suspended by 24 months, and ordered to pay £200.

Abandoned pony who followed the postman rescued from children’s playground

An abandoned pony who would follow a postman on his rounds – and was later found by children in a playground – will now have a “safe and loving” home for life.

Residents in West Pinchbeck, Lincolnshire, contacted the police after repeatedly finding a skewbald pony in their gardens, and walking along busy roads.

Equine welfare charity Bransby Horses stepped in when the pony, who has been named “Spitfire”, turned up in the playground of a children’s home.

“Oblivious to the mayhem he was causing, we recently took in the pony, following reports of him frequently escaping from his tether and even following the postman on his rounds,” said a Bransby spokesperson.

“When we arrived the pony was relaxed and munching on some flowers in the school playground. He was very straight forward to catch and happily loaded onto our trailer.

“As we are not allowed by law to take any animal without the owner’s consent, the police placed an abandonment notice where he was found, and he boarded with us for the duration.”

The spokesperson said Spitfire was not microchipped and despite numerous appeals for his owner to come forward, he was not claimed. As no owner responded to the abandonment notice within the necessary timeframe, he is now in the charity’s ownership, where he will be “cared for in a safe and loving environment for the rest of his life”.

“Spitfire will complete a short quarantine period during which his individual needs will be assessed by a vet and care team, who will ensure he gets the medication, treatment, nutrition, companionship and exercise he needs,” said the spokesperson.

The manager of the children’s home said the children “loved Spitfire and are sad that he’s gone”, but they had been “so worried about him”.

“He was tethered to a post where he had no shelter and would be there in all weathers,” they said. “He was great at escaping and would often be in our garden. In fact, one day I’m sure he was trying to get on a swing.

“We were so pleased when Bransby Horses came to help. We were sad to see him go, but glad he is not on his own anymore.”

Young rider who excelled in dressage on RSPCA rescue takes on pony saved from shipping container – and wins

A young rider who has been excelling in dressage with a rescue pony rehomed from the RSPCA has a second mount – who was rescued from a shipping container, and has already won at his first show.

H&H has reported on Theo Charnley, who started riding in lockdown and within three years was a multiple national dressage champion with RSPCA George, whom the family rehomed as a “scruffy” three-year-old.

The pair have since won a host of dressage titles, but Theo’s time in George’s saddle was limited as he is now 12, and growing. His father Paul put the decision on his next mount to his son.

“We were looking at buying or loaning him one with a bit more experience, but Theo didn’t want to do that,” Paul told H&H. “The dressage world is full of amazing riders but you can get a bit caught up in getting the next horse. But Theo was given that option; we asked if he’d like a pony to take him to the next level, or to start again, and he chose the rescue.”

“Jerry’s was a weird case,” he said. “There was a complaint about dogs barking in a field and the inspectors found two shipping containers. They opened the first one and found about 20 dogs, then in the other one, they found two ponies. It was pretty awful.”

Jerry was in “pretty poor condition” when he was rescued, Paul said.

“The other pony, called Tom, sadly didn’t make it,” Paul said. “We adopted Jerry after some fabulous work by the RSPCA rehabilitating him, and he looked pretty good when we got him.”

Jerry’s passport puts him as a four-year-old but Paul suspects he is younger, and as he was not chipped when he was found, his age has to be estimated. He has done some long-reining and Theo has sat on him but the family thought it best to let him mature a bit before he is backed.

But he has been out in hand, showing at Reaseheath Equestrian Centre a few weeks after his arrival with the Charnleys.

“We thought we’d do that to get him out and about; we’ve never done showing but we thought we’d give it a bash,” Paul said. “We asked some friends who show what to do and they said we’d need all these lotions and potions so we bought them all – I realised that lot cost us more than the pony did!”

The family put in some work on the ground with Jerry, who Paul said took to it with alacrity, then went to the show, where Jerry won the newcomers’ and the cob class, then stood reserve champion.

“I didn’t have a clue what was going on!” Paul said. “When we got pulled in, I thought it was another part of showing, I didn’t realise he’d won. But the judge said afterwards we need to do some bigger qualifiers. Whoever bred him knew what they were doing. And now he’s in the field, growing up a bit.”

The plan is for Theo to move on to Jerry once he outgrows George. The Charnleys then plan to drive George, and see where Jerry takes them.

“Theo’s riding for England in the home nations in a couple of weeks, then we’ve got Area Festivals, regionals, Trailblazers – it’s incredible but we’re looking forward to coming away from it a bit next year, retraining George, and Jerry,” Paul said. “And Theo’s happy whatever happens; if he achieves anything, great, but his motto is that every day he wants to help them be better than the day before, that’s what he loves.”

Paul added that Theo paid Jerry’s adoption fee himself.

“We said he could put his Area Festivals championship prize money towards buying a new pony or a rescue, and that’s what he did with it,” he said. “It’s lovely that that one competition’s prize paid for Jerry.”

‘Incredible pride’ as foal found emaciated and covered with maggots crowned champion

A pony who was found collapsed, emaciated and covered in maggots has stood champion at the Royal Norfolk Show.

Redwings Horse Sanctuary’s Matty took the overall rescue title at the event on Thursday (27 June).

The charity took Matty in with maggot-infested wounds 11 years ago; he had been found dehydrated and covered in lice and sores, lying in a field. He recovered fully at Redwings and now lives with rehomer Sarah, one of the charity’s vets.

Six of Redwings’ equids competed in the rescue classes and the charity’s vet Nicola Berryman was there to watch, having also been present at their rescues.

“To see them all do so well has made me so incredibly proud,” she said. “I remember all their rescues, but Matty’s story does stick in my mind, and it was me who introduced Sarah to Matty. It was Sarah’s first day working at Redwings, and he was a tiny and weak young foal. Sarah fell absolutely in love and then patiently waited to rehome him when he was older – and the rest, as they say, is history!”

The reserve champion was also a rehomed Redwings horse, Redwings Edward who lives with guardian Claire.

“In a brilliant day for Redwings, the largest horse welfare charity in the UK, Redwings Jerome and Guardian Milly took second in the in-hand rescue class after Matty came first, and Redwings Honey and guardian Elli-May came second in the veteran rescue class behind Edward,” a spokesperson for the charity said. “Redwings Yarn and Redwings Destiny, who had been attending the show’s rescue village to help promote rehoming a rescued horse, came fourth and fifth in the in-hand class respectively.”

Redwings CEO Lynn Cuttress said she felt “incredible pride”.

“These horses came to us from such terrible backgrounds, some of them in utterly awful condition like Matty,” she said.

“To see them as they are today, well, it’s like a dream and the reason we do the hard work that we do. Their guardians of course deserve so much credit, and it’s wonderful to see the love they have for their guardian horses.”

Tiny ‘critically neglected’ pony is seeking special new home after loving rehab – could you help?

A Shetland called Sherbert who was “one of the most critically neglected ponies” rescued from an equine therapy centre is ready for her next chapter after her “terrible ordeal”.

The mare was one of 13 taken in by the Mare and Foal Sanctuary after a multi-agency rescue operation in 2022.

“Many of the equines were in a very poor state with severe malnourishment, conjunctivitis, lice, worm burden, overgrown hooves, heart conditions, alopecia, anaemia and chronic inflammation,” a spokesman for the charity said. “Their bones showed through their skin, and some ponies were showing signs of severe depression.”

Those responsible have been prosecuted; the sanctuary said sentencing judge Simon Carr described the situation as “one of the worst cases of animal neglect he had ever seen”.

The Mare and Foal Sanctuary has spent over a year carefully nursing the ponies and horses back to health, with individual recovery plans and extensive training.

“Having fully regained her health, Sherbert has lifelong sanctuary with the Mare and Foal Sanctuary and is thriving,” the spokesman said. ”But sanctuary staff at Newton Abbot in Devon, where she’s based, now feel she would benefit from one-to-one care with an experienced pony handler as part of the charity’s ‘Sanctuary at Home’ loan scheme.”

Syra Bowden, head of welfare outreach and advice added: “Although we will miss seeing her each day, everyone at the sanctuary would love to see Sherbert happily settled in a special new home after her terrible ordeal.

“Our team has been so impressed with Sherbert’s progress. It took a great deal of loving care, support and rehabilitation, but her character and spirit has finally emerged, and she has captured the hearts of everyone who has worked with her.

“At the age of three she’s a sweet-natured, affectionate young pony in good health and we would love for her to find a new home where she can continue to learn and develop in a safe and loving environment. She would make a wonderful companion pony and is sociable in her herd, so she will need other equine company. We think Sherbert will do well with someone who has worked with small ponies before and can give her lots of attention and enrichment exercises.”

The Mare and Foal Sanctuary would like to hear from anyone with experience of equine care who is interested in finding out more about Sherbert or any of its horses or ponies available for rehoming.

‘She was so loved’: rainbow shines out as ‘golden’ mare dies aged 46

A rainbow shone out above Redwings’ equine hospital as the sanctuary’s oldest resident died at the age of 46.

H&H reported that Willow, who had lived at the sanctuary for over 20 years, was in fine health and condition as staff celebrated her birthday in January. The charity said “countless” supporters sent birthday messages, and BBS Radio Norfolk put together a playlist for the occasion.

But on 15 March, the Welsh mare experienced a “sudden and severe” episode of colic.

“Though the charity’s expert teams rushed to help and did everything possible for her, staff had to let her go to prevent her from suffering,” a Redwings spokesman said.

Willow arrived at Redwings in 2003 after an RSPCA prosecution. She was initially wary of people as she had had very little handling but settled in to become a “friendly and much-loved girl and a favourite of all those who met her”.

Redwings vet Dawn Trayhorn said: “While Willow’s grand age was rare, the specialist care we were able to provide her, thanks to our supporters, played a massive role in her enjoying such a long and healthy life, and I’m so proud to have been a part of that.

“She was so loved by so many, and I feel for everyone who is grieving at this news. I’ve never known so many people come to say goodbye to a pony.”

Ms Trayhorn added that it was the first time since the death of Phoenix, the foal who was badly burned in a stable fire, that a rainbow could be seen over the hospital.

“Willow was our most golden of golden oldies and truly one of a kind,” she said. “We won’t forget her.”

‘Opportunity to shine’: new showing society for rescued horses and ponies

A new showing society for rescued horses and ponies is being set up to encourage people to consider taking on a rescued equine, while showcasing how horses and ponies who have suffered from cruelty and neglect can go on to lead happy, healthy and active lives and excel in many equestrian disciplines.

Rescue Equine Showing Society (RESS) founder Cathy Hyde, who has worked in frontline animal welfare since 2001, said: “We really want RESS to give these rescues the opportunity to shine and to demonstrate how successful they can be, while highlighting the work of the rescuers and those that take on the task of rehabilitating the equines that have been subjected to cruelty and neglect.

“Ideally, it will also encourage people to consider adopting from the equine charities – for every equine that is rehomed, this makes space for another to be brought into a rescue charity where it can undergo rehabilitation and go on to find a kind and loving home.”

RESS will have its official launch event at Equifest on 3 August 2024. Qualifiers for the RESS Rescue horse and pony of the year championship at Equifest will take place throughout the season. Classes for in-hand and ridden rescues have been held at Equifest since 2012.

“I had the pleasure of judging at Equifest on a couple of occasions and the show seemed to be the perfect event for these classes,” Cathy said. “And since their inception, the classes have grown in numbers and popularity.”

RESS will also be looking to provide training and bursaries for members from 2025, and a series of competitions culminating in the championships at Equifest. There is no membership required for 2024 and no affiliation fees for shows that want to run classes.

Showing commentator Carey Knox who was commentated at all major shows including Horse of the Year Show and London International is the society president. She added: “Through the first-hand experience of seeing and reading horrific stories, I really want to help highlight what has gone and is going on, and also encourage people to look into perhaps owning and loving a rescue horse or pony.”

A rescue village will also be held at Equifest, supported by NEDZ Beds, where leading equine charities will bring horses and ponies to the show.

A senior miniature Shetland who was “about as thin as an animal gets” is now living a transformed life – and will never want for anything again.

Charlie, now 26, was emaciated when he was taken into Redwings’ care after his rescue in 2022. His owner has been prosecuted by the RSPCA. Rewings said his spine, ribs and hips were clearly visible.

“Charlie was a shocking sight, he was about as thin as an animal gets,” said Redwings senior field officer Jo Franklin. “He came to Redwings after a period of veterinary care at House & Jackson, who did an amazing job with him for which we’re very grateful.

“In order to continue treatment, and for Charlie to live his happiest life, he needed to be in a sanctuary environment, so Redwings offered to give him a forever home.”

Redings staff hope that they will soon be able to introduce 8hh Charlie into a small herd of other Shetlands.

“Since coming to us here at Redwings we’ve seen him totally transform into a healthy, happy pony,” Jo said.

“He’s now out on grass and loves the company of his neighbours. He’s a very friendly boy and enjoys a scritch and a nuzzle from his carers.

Redwings, which took in 104 horses and ponies last year and rehomed 101 to “carefully matched guardian homes”, has launched an appeal for Charlie. The charity is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

A special fuss for a special lady: rescued mare celebrates her 46th birthday in style

Redwings’ oldest equine resident wore a special rosette and enjoyed a big party as she and those who care for her celebrated her 46th birthday in fine style.

H&H reported on Willow’s 45th birthday in 2023, and the team held another party on 22 January this year.

Redwings vet Sarah Prior said: “It was a pleasure to celebrate Willow’s big day; our special lady deserves a special fuss!

“Her carers made her a birthday cake, out of soaked feed, perfect for a lady whose teeth are now decidedly worn.”

Willow was 25 when she arrived at Redwings in 2003, one of two ponies who had been rescued as part of an RSPCA operation. Both had been broodmares on the Welsh commons and had had very little handling.

The mares were initially nervous of people but Willow has become a “sweet and gentle” pony who enjoys a fuss, and has thrived to become the oldest Redwings resident.

Staff from the charity’s equine centre and veterinary teams were guests at the party, having made her a special cake, and all sang Happy Birthday as Willow sported her special rosette.

“As Willow has got older we keep a very close eye on her teeth, and her weight, as well as managing her arthritis – but she is always a pleasure to treat!” Sarah said.

“Part of what I love most about my job here at Redwings is the ability to offer such care to our wonderful veterans.”

Foal found upside-down on rubble pile recovers to support fellow rescued youngster

The life of a pony who was found upside-down on a pile of rubble has been “transformed” – as has that of another young pony he has helped on his own road to recovery.

Redwings is marking a year since months-old Barney was found, partially covered by an old mattress, emaciated and covered in pressure sores.

Barney spent the early part of this year at Redwings’ quarantine facility, where he was treated for his wounds and fed and cared for carefully so he could gain weight safely. He then moved to the charity’s Hapton headquarters in Norfolk, where he has recently become a “crucial companion” to another youngster, Mason, who was rescued this year.

“Mason, a Welsh cross, was one of three ponies who came to Redwings in February, after a joint rescue operation on Gelligaer common in South Wales with RSPCA Cymru, Caerphilly County Borough Council and World Horse Welfare,” a Redwings spokesman said. “He was an orphan foal, thought to be around three months old, and without his mother he was struggling for survival and was severely emaciated.

“On arrival at the sanctuary [pictured, top], Mason was so weak he had to be helped off the horsebox by the Redwings team and placed on round-the-clock care. He was subdued and although he was eating, he took very little interest in his surroundings. Test results showed the level of protein in Mason’s blood was extremely low.”

Redwings vet Dawn Trayhorn said Mason was “effectively a feral pony”.

“But he did not show any fear when I examined him or even when we took those first blood samples,” she said.” He’d never been handled but he was too weak to show that he was frightened of us.”

Tests showed Mason had a significant worm burden, and his intestinal wall was damaged. He needed lifesaving plasma transfusions, antibiotics to treat a bacterial infection of his intestine, wormers, anti-inflammatories and steroids.

“There were so many things going against Mason from the day he was found and rescued but as he had barely survived, we were desperate to make sure he wasn’t going to just fade away,” said Dawn.

Mason gradually recovered, and Redwings staff wanted to find him a suitable friend so he could “have the chance to live like a normal young pony”.

“Fellow youngster Barney was a clear fit, and after a careful integration Barney and Mason are now happily living together, playing and interacting as young ponies should,” the spokesman said.

Redwings welfare vet Nicola Berryman, who cared for Barney when he first arrived, added: “Twelve months after we were all so shocked by the discovery of Barney, who was found discarded like rubbish on a pile of rubble, it is heartwarming to see him flourishing so much that he is even lending a helping hoof to a fellow rescued youngster.

“Mason’s future on the common was very uncertain, and it is likely that without being rescued he would have died. Instead, this Christmas both ponies have a safe and secure future at Redwings, and each other for company! None of this would be possible with the kindness of our supporters, whose donations truly save lives – all year round.”

‘A great outcome’ for more than 70 donkeys as complex rescue case concludes

A “complex” multi-agency rescue case has concluded, with more than 70 donkeys signed into the care of The Donkey Sanctuary before Christmas.

In February 2021 the RSPCA led the rescue operation at a farm in Wales, with support from The Donkey Sanctuary, Redwings, World Horse Welfare, the British Horse Society and Bransby Horses.

The case was the largest in The Donkey Sanctuary’s history, and a spokesman said the donkeys were in “varying degrees of distress”, many suffering from issues relating to “badly overgrown hooves and unsanitary living conditions”.

“Many in the group, which included 20 pregnant mares, required urgent veterinary, farriery and dental care – all of which were provided by The Donkey Sanctuary,” a spokesman for the charity said.

This month the transfer of legal ownership to The Donkey Sanctuary has concluded following three years of legal proceedings. This means all the donkeys, including the foals born since the rescue, “can now be assured of a safe home for life”.

“Those that require specialist, lifelong treatment will remain at The Donkey Sanctuary while for the others, this legal milestone means they can now begin in earnest their journey toward finding forever homes through the charity’s rehoming scheme,” said the spokesman.

Hannah Bryers, head of welfare at The Donkey Sanctuary, said the case is a “fantastic example” of multiple organisations working together to ensure the “best long-term outcome” for the donkeys.

“Accommodating such a large number of donkeys at short notice was not an easy task but teams from across The Donkey Sanctuary came together without question to ensure we could offer a place of safety when these donkeys needed us most,” she said.

Faith Burden, the charity’s executive director of equine operations, added: “This is a great outcome for the donkeys involved in what is the largest UK rescue The Donkey Sanctuary has undertaken in its 54-year history.

“Although they have been in our care since the day of the rescue, protracted legal proceedings meant the future of many of the donkeys was in limbo. The court ruling that all donkeys involved should remain in our care is a huge relief to our staff and supporters. To have secured a safe future for these donkeys is thanks to the close collaboration of a number of agencies, who came together at a time of utmost urgency.

“Of course, it wouldn’t have been possible without the unwavering support of the people who enable The Donkey Sanctuary to carry out the work that we do, so we can be there for donkeys who are most in need.”

Rescue pony who needed years of veterinary care to enjoy first Christmas in new home

A pony rescued from “horrific conditions” who needed years of veterinary treatment is spending Christmas in her new home.

In 2014 cob mare Audrey was rescued from a site in Wales where “where hundreds of horses were found stranded deep in mud without any food, suffering from malnutrition, worm burdens and infectious diseases”.

A Redwings spokesman said that shortly after taking Audrey in, she was diagnosed with the hoof condition canker. The charity’s veterinary team worked with farriers to remove as much infected tissue as possible, but the condition returned.

“In August 2015 Audrey underwent a procedure under general anaesthetic to strip back her hoof tissue even further, and her stay as an in-patient in the horse hospital began,” said the spokesman.

“Six months later, the vets had to remove more abnormal tissue and sadly in 2016, with treatment options exhausted, the veterinary team considered whether Audrey would ever fully recover, or if she may need to be put down due to the impact it was having on her quality of life.”

Redwings vet Sarah Prior, who cared for Audrey, said canker is a “very frustrating disease” as some cases fail to respond to surgical or medical treatment.

“We had to review how it would affect Audrey in the long term. We decided to give her one last summer, and we dressed her hooves every day, treated them with iodine, put her in some protective boots and kept an eye on her. Then, to our surprise, her condition started to stabilise,” said Ms Prior.

“Due to the possible contagious nature of canker, she had her own special care paddock right next to our hospital and adjacent to other ponies who she could groom over the fence, and she became our hospital mascot, and go-to place if we wanted a cuddle. We also worked with our behaviour team to devise enrichment activities for her, and she learnt tricks and games she would do with the nurses.

“As she seemed so content, we decided to keep monitoring her and that’s what we continued to do for the next few years.”

In 2020 Audrey’s canker improved enough that she was discharged from the hospital to join one of the charity’s herds, with the vets continuing to monitor her and bring her into a woodchip paddock or stable in wet weather.

Then in 2023 the Redwings rehoming team had a request from Lucy White to rehome a non-ridden companion.

“Lucy, a veterinary nurse, was looking for a companion for her cob Fleur. She was able to offer a home with an all-weather turnout area, and was happy to take on a pony who might need a little extra special care. The team immediately thought that Lucy’s home sounded like the perfect fit for Audrey,” said the Redwings spokesman.

“In a sign of just how much Audrey meant to teams across Redwings, her carers came together to throw her a good luck and goodbye party. Redwings nursing manager Louise Gedge, who had been a key part of Audrey’s recovery, even packed a small suitcase of all Audrey’s favourite things to take to her new home.”

Audrey is now “happily settled in” and will be spending her first Christmas with her new guardian family.

“Audrey has been a great addition to our family and does an important job of keeping Fleur company. When I take Fleur out for a ride, Audrey gets a special upgrade and goes into our garden, and because of this has built an extra special relationship with my Alaskan malamute Elsie,” said Lucy.

“She has been brilliant to do all the treatment to her feet, and I think it is a real testament to all the staff at Redwings for making her association with humans so positive despite everything she went through. We feel really lucky to have her, and she is worth her weight in gold.”

Redwings chief executive Lynn Cuttress added that the charity “prides itself on its dedication to sanctuary care”.

“Audrey’s case is an exceptional example of the lengths our teams will go to for the rescued equines in our care,” she said.

“When Audrey was eventually discharged from our horse hospital we were all delighted that their dedication had paid off, and what more could we have wished for for Christmas than to see her so settled in a guardian home so perfectly matched to her needs.”

Young girl given just 50% chance of life at birth and fostered rescue pony crowned lead rein champions

A little girl who weighed less than a bag of sugar when she was born is looking forward to spending Christmas with her rescue pony following a “wonderful” first summer together.

Peyton Keir was given a less than 50% chance of survival when she was born prematurely at 24 weeks old, but the seven-year-old has “not let it stop her from fulfilling her horsey-dreams” with her pony Skip.

Rebecca Cutts, Peyton’s mum, decided it was time to get her daughter a pony after spending a year shielding during the initial Covid outbreak. She approached Bransby Horses where they met Skip, who had been born at the charity to a rescued pregnant mare.

“I just thought it might be something nice for us both to do together so we

applied to foster a rescue pony from Bransby Horses,” said Rebecca, who had owned horses previously.

“We took Skip on just to have some fun with and he has just been incredible. What he has brought to mine and Peyton’s life is hard to put into words. But he brings me sanity, he makes us laugh every day, he calms Peyton and he’s so cheeky, we love him to bits.”

Peyton and Skip attended their first show together this summer, a month after Skip’s arrival with the family, and they won their class.

“I was in tears. I was so proud of them both. It wasn’t something we ever expected when we decided to get a pony,” said Rebecca.

“At the end of the summer we decided to go bigger and have a go at the Traditional of the Year Show. On the day we were up at 4am, at the stables for 5am and arrived at the showground in Olney for 8.30am.”

Peyton and Skip won their 10-strong class, which put them forward for the championship in the evening.

“I just looked at it as an amazing experience for him and Peyton and never thought for a minute we would get placed,” said Rebecca, adding that as they walked into the arena for the championship Queen’s We Are the Champions was being played.

“It felt emotional from the start. I looked around at the competition and thought we had no chance but after we trotted him round and lined up, the man called over the speaker; ‘Champion and the traditional best lead rein of 2023 goes to Peyton and Bransby Skip’.

“I couldn’t believe it. I had tears streaming down my face and poor Peyton was just in

shock – she couldn’t believe it either. It was one of the best and proudest moments of my life. Peyton and Skip were utterly amazing. Skip was the best boy ever, he acted like a professional all day.”

Rebecca added that the family is “so grateful” to Bransby Horses for giving them “such an amazing opportunity”.

A Bransby spokesman added that Skip has been “spoiled rotten” with treats and hugs ever since.

“Peyton is now looking forward to spending Christmas with her favourite pony,” said the spokesman.

Abandoned mare and foal ‘saved in time for Christmas’

An abandoned mare and foal were “saved in time for Christmas” thanks to Bransby Horses.

Snow Bunting and her foal Puffin were spotted by Humberside Police officers, who contacted the charity with concerns that no one had visited the horses “for months”.

A Bransby spokesman said that at the time another seven ponies were “often escaping” from the field where they were being illegally fly-grazed, but when Bransby field officer Kris Walker attended the field the others had been taken away before the team arrived.

“When I arrived there were just two in the field, a mare and foal. I was quite concerned about the foal, as he was very lethargic and depressed. I wasn’t sure if he was suckling either, so there was a concern that he might not even be Snow Bunting’s foal,” said Kris.

“I monitored them daily and it soon became clear they were on their own so we would need to do something if these ponies were going to have any chance of survival.”

Bransby worked with the police, RSPCA and a vet to obtain permission to take Snow Bunting and Puffin into their care. While this process was ongoing Kris continued to monitor the ponies.

Bransby welfare manager Rachel Jenkinson said: “We are very grateful to everyone who called us, ultimately saving the lives of these two lovely ponies who would not have lasted through the winter without help. They were both very thin, poor and in need of food and veterinary attention.”

Puffin, thought to be around six months old, now weighs just over 57kg and has “improved daily”.

“He is still very thin but now suckling from his mother,” said a Bransby spokesman, who added that Puffin and Snow Bunting are being treated for very high worm burdens and malnourishment, but it is “hoped that they will make a full recovery”.

“All efforts were made to trace an owner but as no one came forward to claim the ponies they have now been signed over into the care of Bransby Horses.”

‘Inspirational’ mare rescued emaciated and pregnant takes on orphaned foal as well as her own

An “inspirational” mare who was rescued in such a weak condition she was unable to feed her newborn foal has now taken on another colt who lost his dam when he was three months old.

Moose, who was taken in by World Horse Welfare’s Norfolk rescue and rehoming centre six months ago, has “gone from an extremely poorly and skinny mum-to-be to a mother that the caring staff at Hall Farm couldn’t be more proud of: raising her own foal alongside another who sadly lost his own mum”.

Holly Roe, Moose’s groom at Hall Farm, said: “She came into us at the beginning of May. She was very skinny, heavily pregnant, had really bad moulting and a large collection of fluid and blood under her stomach. Because she was so malnourished, we slowly integrated feed, trying to get her to have a bit more milk production.”

Moose gave birth to her colt, named Goose, soon after her arrival. But as she was not producing enough milk, he became ill, developing life-threatening sepsis.

“He needed intensive veterinary care but, despite the odds being stacked against him, and with Moose staying patiently by his side, he was able to recover,” a World Horse Welfare spokesman said.

Mare and foal recovered enough to be turned out, with another foal, Cancan, and his dam Snowy. But Snowy had ongoing health issues and despite the best efforts of all involved, the farm’s vet advised that she needed to be put down, orphaning her foal.

“Brave, patient and kind Moose stepped up to the challenge and has taken on the role of adoptive mother to Cancan,” the spokesman said.

Moose and both foals are thriving, and the mare has become the face of World Horse Welfare’s Christmas appeal.

“We’d never be able to do the work that we do without the support of the public,” said the charity’s field officer Chris Shaw, who found Moose in her emaciated state.

“With your support, Moose, Goose and Cancan have bright futures ahead of them, rehomed into loving homes when they are strong enough and ready and enjoying a Christmas in the meantime here at Hall Farm.”

He added: “To see a horse that we’ve been able to help, and get back to full health, this is one of the best things about my job. Honestly, the way it makes me feel, it’s just incredible.”

‘Team talks’ help rescue pony and young rider win host of national titles

A young rider and his rescue pony have continued their trailblazing progress through the dressage world – winning a title and two other podium places in one championship.

H&H reported in August of the success of Theo Charnley and RSPCA George at the SEIB Trailblazers Championships. The combination went on to win at the Carnival of Dressage at Aintree, at the National Schools Equestrian Association (NSEA) finals, and then at the British Dressage (BD) Quest championships on 4-5 November.

Theo and George won the intro title, and came third in the individual prelim and the team finals.

“He’s the first person to finish on the podium in all three classes, which is pretty cool,” Theo’s father Paul told H&H. “Then to top off the weekend of wonderfulness, Theo was crowned the BD North and West youth rider skills champions. It’s been one hell of a year!”

Paul said one thing Theo does before every championship test is to have a “team talk” with George, to go through their test.

“It obviously works, that picture was taken before the one they won!” Paul said.

“They have their team talk; Theo goes through it saying ‘This will set up the canter here, and if you don’t get it, we’ll come back to trot here;, because George is a bit weaker on one canter lead, and George sits there watching it all. It helps Theo remember it, and it’s cute.”

Paul said Theo has learned that some things he cannot control, but others such as riding accurately to markers and using corners properly, he can control to maximise his performance and score.

“But he’s not bothered about winning,” Paul said. “Next year, I wanted him to progress to Area Festivals but he wants to do regionals, because he wants to go to the national championships. I took him to Somerford to watch and they had prelim, novice and elementary, and next door Carl Hester was doing the grand prix.

“Fair play to Carl, he came out and had photos with Theo, and Theo said: ‘I want to ride here next year’. I said he wouldn’t have a chance of winning and he said he didn’t care, he just wants to ride there; he wants to be in the arena next to Carl.”

Theo is now 11 and Paul said next year will be his last on George, but that the pony will be going nowhere.

“I’ve been offered a lot of money for him – the RSPCA signs over ownership when you take them on – but I just can’t do it,” he said. “I’ve had to fight off a lot of people asking what we’ll do with him; everyone thinks we’re mad because he’s worth a lot but you have to put your hands in your pockets and walk away. He’s not going anywhere.”

Paul said the aim is to train George to be driven; he has been long-reined since they took him on, and compete with Theo in British Carriagedriving events.

“Theo will have his first driving lessons in December, then hopefully they can stay together,” he said.

Abandoned pony found tied to gates on busy industrial estate

A “very friendly” pony found tied to gates at a busy industrial estate has been rescued and is “doing well” at his new charity home.

Workers arrived at S.I.M Warehouse and Logistics in Doncaster’s Shaw Lane Industrial Estate to find the 12hh grey looking “bewildered, but otherwise calm”. They gave him a bucket of water and made him a holding pen, before calling equine welfare charity Bransby Horses.

“When we arrived we knew we would have to remove him from where he was as it was not a safe environment for him to remain in, mainly due to the high volume of lorries and trucks entering and leaving the facility,” said Bransby Horses’ welfare manager Rachel Jenkinson.

“This meant that the police were then able to grant us the authority to take the pony to Bransby Horses for the duration of the notice in the hope an owner would come forward and claim him.”

The pony, who was named Simmy after the company, was not microchipped and his owner could not be traced before the abandonment notice expired, so he has been signed over into the care of Bransby Horses.

“Simmy is enjoying life in a securely fenced grass paddock – a far cry from the industrial estate he was found on,” said a statement from the charity.

“Overall, he has settled well into life at Bransby Horses and it is hoped he may be rehomed through the charity’s Perfect Partner rehoming scheme once he is ready.”

‘Hard work and patience trump buying success’: RSPCA pony and child who started riding in lockdown take national title

A child who started riding three years ago and a pony who was rehomed unbacked from the RSPCA months later have become national dressage champions.

Theo Charnley and RSPCA George won the intro dressage title at the SEIB Trailblazers Championships at Addington Equestrian last weekend with a final-test score of 83.04%. In total at the event, the combination achieved four wins, a second and a 10th place, at intro and prelim level.

This came after they won at the National Schools Equestrian Association winter dressage championships last year, and came eighth at the British Dressage (BD) Quest nationals. They are leading the BD Quest leaderboard at intro and prelim, and represented the BD northwest squad at the youth inter-regional championships.

Theo’s father Paul told H&H he was “holding back tears” at Addington last weekend.

“I don’t want to take credit as it’s about Theo and George and what they did,” he said.

“What’s most impressive is Theo was the first to sit on George, and backed him with us. Don’t mix young children and ponies – but they very much buck the trend!”

Paul used to ride but stopped after his marriage to Claire, and had thought Theo might take it up one day.

“But he was terrified of horses and never wanted to go anywhere near them,” he said. “I volunteer a lot with British Eventing so he used to go fence-judging with me, then when he was eight, for some reason he decided he wanted a pony. This was in lockdown when everyone was charging £7,000 for a dog, so you can imagine my response!

“We decided he’d have lessons, and I thought if he was, I would too, to see if I still had it! Three months later, I had a horse and he had his pony.”

Paul said he has always preferred taking on young horses, and as he could not find anything suitable for sale for Theo, he looked on the RSPCA website at ponies for rehoming.

“They had this scruffy George, rising three,” he said.

The Charnleys took George, whose dam was pregnant with him when she was taken in by the RSPCA, and Paul spent a long time long-reining him on the lanes, with Theo helping, and eventually Theo was on board. George was turned away for a holiday and brought back into work the following year aged four.

“It was lovely that Theo was the first – and only – person on him, and he’s done all the work,” said Paul. “He’d never been involved with ponies but he’s taken to it like a duck to water.”

Paul added that although Theo and George competed in a few lead-rein jumping classes as well as dressage – “And a lead-rein event, which meant I had to run round the cross-country!” – “it quickly became apparent that Theo’s main joy was dressage; he absolutely loves it.”

“George is like a little human,” he said. “If he’s tired, he puts his head on you and if he wants a scratch, he starts grooming you, and he’s brilliant at competitions as he’s the most relaxed pony there.

“He’s a pony who wants to give you everything and there aren’t many who will do that. He’s got a home with us for life.”

Jacqui Wilson, senior equine manager at the RSPCA, told H&H: “We are absolutely over the moon to see Theo and George accomplishing so much together – we always look forward to each update as it’s so exciting to see what they’ve achieved next.

“George was born in the RSPCA’s care after his mum was found in a sorry state, neglected and forgotten. George was lucky to survive – but even luckier that he landed on his hooves and was adopted by such a wonderful new family two years later. Theo and George’s story proves that if you give these little rescue ponies – who are so often overlooked – a chance, they really can shine.”

‘She’s a headstrong mare’: former Blue Cross resident set for Royal International debut

Coloured mare Blue Cross Kalice, who was born at a rescue centre, has booked her first ticket to the Royal International (RIHS) during her debut open show season.

Blue Cross Kalice, who is known as Kali at home, is owned by Carol Lodge. Kali is home-produced and ridden by Carol’s friend, Rosie White.

Kali was sourced from the Blue Cross in Oxford in 2018 as an unbroken four-year-old.

“Never in a million years did I think we could affiliate and actually qualify for something like the RIHS,” says Dental nurse Rosie, who has ambitions of qualifying for the SEIB Search For A Star finals later in the season.

Kali was born at the Blue Cross centre as her dam had been rescued while she was in foal.

“Kali had gone to a couple of homes, but due to her massive attitude she’d landed back at the centre,” explains Rosie. “She was a pretty bolshy four-year-old when we got her.”

Kali was originally competed locally, though disaster struck during towards the end of one show day, as Rosie explains: “Carol fell ill while we were at the show, so much so that we dropped her off at the hospital on the way back. She was very ill and she didn’t come out of hospital for six months. In 2021, after the pandemic, we also sadly lost Carol’s husband to cancer. Everything considered, Kali and I didn’t show for a long while.”

Towards the end of 2021, Kali and Rosie were all set to attend the CHAPS championships held at Arena UK. However, a week before the show Kali caught an infection in her tail.

“We had to shave her tail off,” says Rosie. “The vets thought we might have to amputate it, but thankfully we got on top of the infection quickly. We nursed her back to health, but unfortunately she could only be shown at local level the following year as she had no tail!

“Kali is now nine and she’s come into her prime,” Rosie adds. “She’s really grown up this year and we’ve finessed our craft together. She’s been worth the wait.”

Rosie and Kali booked their RIHS ticket at Shard Equestrian.

“It was an amazing experience and we got some lovely comments from the judges,” says Rosie. “Kali is a mare who is headstrong with her own unique attitude. Many people comment that she has the presence of a stallion. But, this has made it so much more rewarding. I’m so excited to ride at Hickstead next month.”

Man who was living in his car offered home and job after helping seriously ill rescue pony

A man who was living in his car and came to the aid of a seriously ill rescue pony has since been offered a home and a job.

Roberta Bartington of registered charity Woodfield Animal Sanctuary in South Wales was notified about an emaciated pony, thought to be a foal, wandering near a beach in the Rhossili area at the end of March. Roberta went searching for him in the dark and was given permission by the authorities to take him in.

“He was very sick, and when we got him home and our vets checked him they thought he was about two years old,” she said.

“He was the most emaciated pony they had seen and he needed a 24-hour drip. He couldn’t stand up and was just a bag of bones. We had to carry him on to the trailer to take him to the vet hospital.”

The colt, who has been named O’Grady after the late entertainer Paul O’Grady, was eventually allowed to return to Woodfield Animal Sanctuary, but needed round-the-clock care.

“He couldn’t get up by himself and the vet said someone had to be with him through the night to get him up every hour and a half,” said Roberta.

“When I became unwell and was off my feet for a few days I panicked thinking ‘How are we going to manage?’”

Roberta posted on Facebook looking for help, and when Karl Allen heard about O’Grady, he offered his services.

“Karl went into the stable and within minutes built up a rapport with O’Grady,” said Roberta.

“He has spent every night with O’Grady in the stable, and really does just have a way with all the animals here. He’s very knowledgeable.

“O’Grady is only halfway out of the woods, but the vets can’t get over the difference in him. He’s put on some weight and is a different, and happy horse.”

Karl is now living in a static caravan at Woodfield with his dog Tilly, and Roberta said she will offer him a job at the sanctuary.

“It’s been a dream to work in a sanctuary, and when I heard about O’Grady I knew it was something I could help with. I’ve worked with livestock and as a groom,” Karl told H&H, adding that he had been living in his car after “life had given him a kick”.

“I spend every night with O’Grady, I talk to him and help him up. Every day he’s getting stronger. I know he’ll make it, because I won’t let him not.”

‘Not for the faint-hearted’: could you be the right person for this equine challenge?

Four Arabs described as “not for the faint-hearted” are in need of homes with knowledgable individuals who are experienced with the breed.

The Horses & Ponies Protection Association (HAPPA) is looking for those with the skills and resources to take on one of its intelligent and sensitive, beautiful but quirky herd, as it desperately seeks to free up space.

The charity is gearing up to drive rehoming, as it fears its rescue centre will be “overrun” owing to the cost-of-living crisis. Some of its residents are still in rehabilitation and could be rehomed as projects, to “those that have got the experience to continue with their recovery and support them with behavioural issues”.

“The charity has a group of Arabs that would thrive from one-to-one [relationships] with someone that has the skill and expertise to deal with the breed and is looking for a challenge,” a HAPPA spokesman said. “The ideal people will be those with financial stability, time, patience, commitment, and dedication to build a trusting relationship.

“The Arabs at HAPPA are very high-maintenance and not for the faint-hearted; they are intelligent and sensitive, typical of the breed. The geldings were castrated late in life and have stallion-like behaviours, the mares are sensitive and highly strung with quirky personalities.

“They definitely pose a challenge, but with the right person, they will come on leaps and bounds. Arabs can be very sociable with people they trust and if you love the breed, then you will love the challenge.”

HAPPA wants to free up space to be ready to intervene; it expects to be “inundated” with requests to take in horses as the cost-of-living crisis continues.

“If people are struggling to feed themselves, the charity worries that people will be looking at downsizing other costs, such as keeping their horses,” the spokesman said.

The Arabs looking for homes are HAPPA Yelena, HAPPA Oaken, HAPPA Iduna and HAPPA Elsa.

Amanda Berry, head of equine operations at HAPPA, said: “We urge people with the know-how to come forward and offer a home to one of our special Arabs; we have three spirited mares and one boisterous gelding looking for their forever homes. We also have an abundance of coloured cobs and many others looking for that special someone.

‘One in a million’: rescued Spindles Farm yearling’s journey to showing stardom

A yearling who was part of “one of the most horrific cases of animal cruelty in the UK” has gone on to become a “one in a million” pony – and last year made his London International Horse Show debut.

In 2008 Dazzle was one of more than 100 equines rescued from Spindles Farm, in Amersham, Buckinghamshire. The case was one of the largest equine rescues in the UK, involving a number of welfare charities, who took in animals. There were 32 equines found dead at the scene.

The Horse Trust took in 14 horses and ponies, including yearling Dazzle, who was underweight and suffering from a salmonella infection. He was rehabilitated, and when he was old enough he began his training, during which time he was described by charity staff as “an absolute sweetheart”.

Dazzle found a home with Claire and her son Tom, who “jumped at the chance” to have him. Since then he has gone from “strength to strength”. Now 16, Dazzle has competed at novice level dressage and represented the Old Berkeley Hunt branch of the Pony Club in team competitions with Tom. The pair were second in the Senior Showing and Dressage (SSADL) veteran class at Royal Windsor and at the SSADL championships the pair qualified for the 2022 London International Horse Show, where they finished 12th.

The 2023 season is off to a “flying start”, with Tom and Dazzle qualifying for the Pony Club spring festival (11-12 February).

“If I had £1 for every time someone asked if they could have him, I would be a millionaire!” said Claire.

“He’s such a saint; he never puts a foot wrong, he’s so safe to hack and foot-perfect. Dazzle is truly a one in a million horse and considering his extremely neglected start, it’s amazing how much he gives.”

A Horse Trust spokesman said prior to joining Claire and Tom, Dazzle was in the care of another family and was particularly loved by his “dad” Jerry.

“When Jerry unfortunately became extremely poorly, he had one last wish to see his old friend Dazzle. Claire, knowing what a special horse Dazzle is and fully aware of the therapeutic benefits horses have on people, decided the right and best thing to do would be to hack the two hours to this gentleman’s home to grant him this final wish,” he said.

“They rode through the garden to the window where Jerry was waiting. They didn’t know then, but this would be the last time he was able to stand, he put that final burst of energy into saying goodbye to this truly special horse that has given so much to so many.”

The spokesman added the charity is “honoured” to have been part of Dazzle’s journey.

“It has been amazing to see Dazzle continue to spread his wings with Claire and Tom. It goes to show what dedicated time, specialist care, love and patience can really do for rescue ponies,” he said.

“Dazzle is a shining example of why we work so hard and do what we do. We couldn’t do it without donations from our incredible supporters.”

Fears rise in ‘unwanted’ horses will overwhelm charities this winter

Charity rehoming figures remained steady in 2022 – but concerns have been shared that an “increase in unwanted horses could be just around the corner”, as the cost-of-living crisis remains a major worry.

As inflation, fuel, and energy costs soared across the UK this year, there are few who have not been affected, including in the equestrian industry. Statistics from the RSPCA’s Animal Kindness Index 2022, a UK-wide survey, showed the cost of living crisis is potentially “one of the biggest threats to the welfare of animals across the country”.

The RSPCA took in 365 horses by December, and a charity spokesman told H&H the RSPCA is “extremely concerned” about the impact of the ongoing crisis on owners’ finance, and consequently their equines.

“A worrying trend we saw at the end of summer is that the condition of some equines entering our care was very poor – often around 0.5 body condition score,” he said, adding that this was a “huge red flag”.

“There are other signs of the crisis starting to impact equines, with charities which accept them from the general public reporting more approaches from owners regarding potential surrender of their horses or asking for advice about care costs.”

The RSPCA rehomed 186 equines last year, which left the charity in a “better position at the beginning of winter than it might have been”, but the spokesman said capacity issues at RSPCA centres mean it is continuing to seek horse fosterers to help look after the equines in its care.

Bransby Horses took in a similar amount of equines to previous years, with 155 admissions between January and November. But in the same period it had 50 calls from owners looking to sign their horses over owing to financial difficulties. The charity is concerned an “increase of unwanted horses could be just around the corner”.

“We think the number of requests to charities to take in equines from private homes is steadily increasing across the board and we are concerned routine care could lessen as people struggle financially – which in turn will be compromising welfare short- and long-term,” said Rachel Jenkinson, Bransby welfare manager.

“We understand the current financial situation is putting increased strain on owners. All we would say is please do not lose hope – give Bransby Horses a call if you are struggling, we are here to help and can signpost you to possible solutions.

“While it is sadly not possible for us to say yes to all private intake requests, we will always respond to welfare concerns, abandonments and those in immediate danger.”

A Bransby spokesman added that ”demand continues to be high” for rehoming, with 109 equines placed in foster homes during 2022.

Redwings chief executive Lynn Cuttress told H&H it had been “a year of consolidation” for the charity, given the cost-of-living challenges.

“We’ve had to be shrewd and negotiate the best terms we can get on everything we purchase and are still facing huge increases in feed and hay bills plus electricity and other utilities,” she said, adding that despite the “ongoing difficult circumstances” the charity was able to take in 109 horses and ponies this year up to December.

“We’ve worked hard to find homes for 147 equines between January and November. We hope people will continue to support the important rehoming work of registered charities next year but would urge people to think carefully about taking on a horse at this time,” she said.

A World Horse Welfare spokesman told H&H at the end of 2022 its four centres were at around 75% capacity, and the “strong demand” for rehoming had helped keep space going into winter.
