Advice for horse owners who are really struggling financially – where to find helpful information if you can’t make ends meet

Do you feel like you can’t afford to keep your horse? Or perhaps you know someone in this situation? Online searches for “putting horses down for financial reasons” has increased by 133% in the last year, so the sad reality is that there are many people in this situation.

Many kinds of hardship – joblessness, the cost of living crisis or unexpected vet bills – could leave horse owners struggling financially. Saving money on horse costs can help to a point, but extreme financial pressures can leave owners facing painful decisions, such as feeding themselves and their family or their horse.

“More owners are reaching out for help and advice, especially as rising hay prices and bedding costs are being passed on to the consumer and the average price of livery increases,” explains Amanda Berry, head of equine operations at HAPPA.

Although she reports that the cost of living is having a “huge impact” on owners’ circumstances, Amanda adds that calls to HAPPA cite other personal difficulties, too.

“We are currently receiving a higher-than-average number of calls and emails from owners wanting to relinquish ownership. Ill health is the top factor, whether their own or a family member’s, rather than financial difficulties.

“Divorce and redundancy are also contributory factors for owners reaching out for help.”

Anne Whitehorn, welfare operations manager at Redwings, says the charity receives between 25 and 30 requests to take in horses a month.

“Priority for our very limited sanctuary spaces is given to those who need our specialist care, so sadly Redwings is unable to offer homes on request,” she said. “However, we are available to talk through owners’ circumstances and signpost options as best we can.”

Can I get financial support?

Unfortunately, there is no fund available for owners in financial hardship, says Fran Windle, UK support officer at World Horse Welfare.

“Although we cannot directly contribute financial support, our advice line is available in office hours on 01953 497238,” explains Fran. “Our friendly team will happily discuss a situation and offer advice and guidance to anyone struggling to care for their horses.

“Owners can also request a call from one of our team using the form available on our Help for Horse Owners page.”

Anne adds that advice for horse owners struggling financially is available from Redwings’ welfare line.

“We offer a non-judgemental ear that people often say is a great help in itself. Anyone wishing to call Redwings’ welfare line can do so on 01508 481008 or 01508 505246. Or, send us an email at welfare@redwings.co.uk.”

Will a charity take my horse on?

Amanda adds that charities’ limited resources mean they cannot take every horse on, and must prioritise cases in which the Animal Welfare Act 2006 is enforced.

“Charities that belong to the National Equine Welfare Council (NEWC) each have their own intake criteria,” she explains. “It is worth contacting each one individually and finding out if they have room.”

She recommends seeking advice from an equine charity.

“For those who want to relinquish ownership of an ex-racehorse, it is worth contacting Retraining of Racehorses (RoR). They provide funding for vulnerable thoroughbreds who began in the racing industry.

“HAPPA is a registered RoR centre, and can assist anyone who wants to rehome an ex-racehorse.”

Additionally, she suggests Horses 4 Homes, which facilitates the safe rehoming of equines.

“It aims to safely and effectively rehome and loan horses via its online listing and application platform.”

Fran echoes Amanda’s advice.

“World Horse Welfare and other charities will be very happy to provide advice and support,” she tells H&H.

“The Blue Cross Home Direct Scheme can help owners find new homes for horses if they are no longer able to care for them.”

How can I rehome my horse?

Horse owners struggling financially might consider loaning out their horse.

“When rehoming privately, ensure that it is undertaken responsibly and is done with a written agreement in place to identify both parties’ responsibilities,” says Amanda.

“Remember that as the lawful owner, you have a secondary responsibility to ensure a duty of care. Ensure that you keep in touch with the loanee and can visit to evidence that the horse is cared for responsibly.

“Also consider they might ask you to take the horse back at short notice.”

The charities advise owners who wish to sell or give away their horse to consider the risks.

Amanda advises that a horse with a job is much easier to rehome.

“For a horse that has a value and is in work, or is field sound and able to be a companion, then the option to sell on the open market is a sensible choice,” she says.

When it comes to giving horses away, Fran advises extreme caution.

“Be very mindful that as soon as the horse is out of your care, you have no control over their future wellbeing,” she warns. “We would always advise researching any potential new home very carefully – especially for a non-ridden horse.”

She says if a situation sounds too good to be true, alarm bells should ring.

What if my horse is elderly, sick or injured?

Owners in financial hardship might experience the devastating situation in which their old or ill horse’s specialist care is far beyond their means.

Difficult as it might be to think about, Fran says that euthanasia may be better for some horses than an uncertain fate.

“Sadly, we see too many cases where horses who can’t be ridden are passed along until they end up in a really poor situation.”

Anne shares these sentiments. “If the horse is older and has underlying health conditions, then euthanasia might be the best choice to make for them.

“Sometimes owners need reassurance from someone else that euthanasia may be the most appropriate choice for their horse. Hearing this from us can help relieve some of the pressure they feel when considering this as the kindest option.”

The BHS Friends At The End scheme offers support horse owners when it is time to say goodbye to their beloved equine companion. They provide free, confidential support to horse owners, carers, sharers, and loaners before, during and after the death or loss of a horse so that you don’t have to go through it alone.

Pony dumped in London ‘on the brink of death’ spends first Christmas in new home

A pony dumped in a field in London “on the brink of death” has “beaten the odds to survive” and will spend Christmas in his new home.

Ronnie, thought to be a part-bred Hackney, was rescued from Cranford Park, Hillingdon, in March, by council staff, who contacted the RSPCA.

Ronnie was emaciated and was the weight of a pony half his size, the RSPCA said. He was suffering from equine flu and had a heavy worm burden, and blood tests showed a weak immune system.

“Despite being only two or three years old it is thought that he had been used as a driving pony and abandoned because he was too weak to carry on,” said an RSPCA spokesperson.

“He was brought into the care of the RSPCA Millbrook Animal Centre who worked as a team to bring Ronnie back from the brink of death.”

The centre’s yard supervisor Charlotte Neary said Ronnie had a body score of 0.5.

“The whole picture was quite shocking. Not only was he so young and underweight, but he’d obviously been expected to work as well and when he couldn’t, he was dumped,” she said.

“Ronnie has been the sweetest pony from the first day – everyone who spends time with him instantly falls in love. He was really shut down and very quiet but was still such a gentleman and let everybody treat him; the farrier, vet, dentist and the staff. It was like he wanted to take all the help because he knew he needed it.”

Ronnie was carefully managed back to health. After six weeks, he made enough progress to go into a bigger paddock with a pony called Frodo.

“As Ronnie grew stronger he became happier and started playing with other horses. But his mannerism never really changed, he was the perfect little gentleman. It’s the only way to describe him,” said Charlotte.

“He would give us a happy little whinny every morning and it was just so heartwarming to see him not only get better physically, but mentally as well. He put on 32kg in four weeks and this shows how incredibly underweight he had been.”

After four months in the care of the RSPCA Ronnie reached his ideal weight of 225kg.

“He proved to have quite the following on our Facebook page and our supporters were just incredible, they donated so many items for him such as rugs, fly masks, treats, enrichments and salt licks. We are incredibly grateful to our community for their donations and want to say a huge thank you to them,” said Charlotte.

“He had a massage kindly donated by Mary at Vitality Equine, who said some of his muscles were quite tight which would collaborate with the fact he was likely used as a driving pony, despite his young age.”

Ronnie was adopted by Kera Hodson and her mum Claire Preston, who have three other RSPCA rescue ponies.

“We saw Ronnie’s heartbreaking story on Facebook and knew we needed to help him. Kera set her heart on him and said ‘He’s coming home’,” said Claire.

“He has got a home for life and has slotted straight in. There’s always something very special about taking on a rescue and they know they have found their people. When we go to the field they all come running. To be abandoned and left – it breaks our heart to think what had happened.”

Claire said the family “can’t wait to celebrate Christmas” with Ronnie.

“He will be very spoiled just like his ‘siblings’ George, Splash and Shelly. They will have a special breakfast and lots of love,” she said.

Equine welfare charities reflect on the challenges of 2025 – as the number of owners giving up their horses increases

Financial challenges continue for horse owners, as equine welfare charities come under pressure too.

As 2025 comes to a close, charities have reflected on the year, citing rising costs across the board as an ongoing concern.

World Horse Welfare chief field officer Claire Gordon told H&H it had been a “challenging year”, exacerbated by the summer drought and its impact on forage yields.

“Charities are not immune from these challenges and the worrying impact we’re starting to feel is the resilience of the welfare sector shrinking – at a time when demand for our services is increasing,” she said.

“We’ve seen charities having to shut some of their centres, make redundancies, close to new intakes or decrease stocking levels to reduce running costs. Sadly, we’ve lost some charities who have closed permanently, finding the ever-increasing costs unsustainable.”

World Horse Welfare had rehomed 302 equines and taken in 200 by 30 November. Of the charity’s 2,200-plus rehomed horses and ponies, 155 were returned this year.

Ms Gordon reported that welfare cases involving large numbers of horses “continue to further deplete” rescue centres’ capacity.

“Some of the big operations have involved horses who have been sold or passed on by their owners to unknown fates, many later rescued from dealers and hoarding situations,” she said.

“We’ve also seen cases where owners and breeders have passed away or become very ill with no succession plan, leaving charities to pick up the pieces.”

This year Blue Cross launched a strategy, “designed to support private horse owners in times of need”. The charity took in 434 equines compared to 212 in 2024, the majority from private homes.

“There are many reasons owners are reluctantly having to relinquish their horses, but financial strain is the most common. Rising veterinary costs, combined with this year’s sharp increases in hay and straw prices, have placed significant pressure on households,” a Blue Cross spokesperson told H&H.

“To meet demand, the charity brings horses in for rehabilitation and rehoming, while also expanding its Home Direct scheme, which allows horses to remain in their homes while Blue Cross helps match them with new owners.”

Blue Cross reported a “dip” in rehoming figures, from 250 last year to 231 this year – thought to be “linked to the rising costs of hay, feed and winter care”.

By 30 November, Redwings had taken in 51 equines, down from 98 last year.

“While this is a big drop on recent years, this is unfortunately all the space we’ve had available. With around 1,200 existing residents, we must ensure we don’t compromise their continuing care over new intakes, and that has meant space has been very limited this year,” Redwings chief executive Lynn Cutress told H&H.

Redwings rehomed 93 horses and ponies by the end of November, compared to 88 in 2024.

“We are pleased these numbers have held steady and encourage anyone looking to take on a horse to consider Redwings, or another equine charity,” said Ms Cutress.

The RSPCA admitted 546 equines by 30 November and rehomed more than 200.

“2025 has been a challenging year for the RSPCA and other equine charities, as rising costs for hay, veterinary care and other essentials have driven up the cost of caring for horses. This comes at a time when the cost-of-living crisis continues to impact horse carers,” said RSPCA equine expert Mark Kennedy.

Hope after heartbreak as pony rescued with 70 other horses from ‘appalling conditions‘ finds his lifelong home for Christmas

A pony who was rescued from “appalling” conditions, with some 70 equids and 450 animals in total, has a new home in time for Christmas – and for good.

Will, whose problem with his jaw means he needed a specialist home, arrived at Redwings’ Caldecott centre in Norfolk this month, where he has a home for life. He was one of hundreds of animals removed from a large farm in November 2023, in a rescue operation involving more than 100 people from eight charities, with vets and police.

“There were 455 animals of 19 different species removed from appalling conditions in two fields, barns, outbuildings, sheds and filthy hutches,” a Redwings spokesperson said.

“Virtually all the animals had not received veterinary care, and several had to be put to sleep to end their suffering.

“Donkeys and horses were suffering from rotting feet without attention from a vet or a farrier, one donkey was so lame, she was put to sleep to end her suffering. Some were underweight, others had not received treatment for parasites or proper dental care.

“Over half the equines seized were in poor body condition. The floors of barns and enclosures were deep in faeces and stinking, mouldy forage. Most of the mares had mixed with stallions and were pregnant.”

A 52-year-old man from Nottinghamshire was jailed and banned from keeping animals for life in September, having pleaded guilty to 25 animal welfare offences. A 33-year-old woman from Nottinghamshire was given a suspended prison sentence and banned from keeping dogs for five years, having pleaded guilty to two offences.

Redwings’ head of welfare and behaviour Nic de Brauwere took part in the rescue.

“This was a very challenging two days working with often nervous and unhandled ponies and donkeys who were trapped in horrible living conditions,” he said.

“It was heartbreaking to see just how poor their quality of life was but being able to help them by supporting the humane catching, vet assessments and loading on to the many horseboxes, knowing they were heading to a much brighter future, was very rewarding.

“I’m pleased that one of the ponies I got to work with has his forever home with us here at Redwings.”

Mr de Brauwere explained that part of Will’s jaw is shorter than the other and his teeth do not meet as they should.

“He will therefore need close monitoring, regular dental check-ups and regular dental maintenance to live a happy and healthy life, all things which we are able to provide for him here at Redwings thanks to the generosity of our supporters,” he said.

“I’m happy to say that he’s settling in well at Redwings Caldecott where he’s sharing a field with another pony, Tyson, over the winter. He’ll be introduced to a bigger herd in the spring.”

Little donkeys find forever home together in time for Christmas

Two little donkeys born weeks apart at an equine rescue centre can look forward to Christmas in their new home together.

Peanut and Popcorn were born last year at World Horse Welfare’s Belwade Farm rescue and rehoming centre, in Aberdeenshire, which had taken in their heavily pregnant rescued mothers Mia and Molly.

“Donkeys bond very strongly so Peanut and Popcorn, who were born 10 weeks apart, were looking for a home together once they were old enough,” a World Horse Welfare spokesperson said. “Rehoming a pair can often be tricky, as not everyone has space to take two animals at once – but luck was on Peanut and Popcorn’s side and they found the perfect home at the end of September.”

Carol, who has welcomed the two young donkeys, said someone she knew sent her the links to their profiles on the World Horse Welfare website.

“As soon as I read their profiles, I thought this would be the ideal home for them,” she said.

“I did take time to consider it carefully before applying though, as I already had two donkeys and needed to be sure it was right for them too.

“After I applied, I was invited to the farm to meet Peanut and Popcorn and could tell it would be a great match with my two older donkeys, Duffy and Henrietta. Peanut and Popcorn have fitted right in and they’re such characters – they’re very funny. They’ve really livened Duffy and Henrietta up and it’s lovely to see them all zooming round the field together.

“All my animals have a home for life, so hopefully this is just the first of many happy Christmases with their new friends. I can’t imagine them not being here now.”

Carol added that she has always been keen on rehoming, to give animals the second chance they deserve.

“Giving Peanut and Popcorn a home has made space for two more horses or donkeys in need to be rescued,” she said. “It’s been a brilliant experience for me – the Belwade Farm team were all really friendly and helpful, as well as very efficient. I’d recommend rehoming to anyone.”

‘Out of sadness a wonderful friendship has blossomed’: abandoned donkey finds new friend in loving home

A donkey who was abandoned while pregnant and who lost her friend has found a loving new home – and a new soul mate.

Young jenny Mia was taken in, heavily in foal, by World Horse Welfare’s Belwade Farm after she was abandoned last summer. She is now living with rehomer Alicia, whose donkey Duffy had lost her friend at about the same time Mia lost her companion Molly.

“Out of sadness, a wonderful friendship has blossomed,” a World Horse Welfare spokesperson said. “Mia and Duffy bonded very quickly and are now thriving together.”

World Horse Welfare groom Jodie worked with Mia before and after the birth of her foal Peanut.

“When Mia first arrived, she was very cautious of people – it took a long time to gain her trust,” said Jodie. “To catch Mia and her friend Molly, who was abandoned with her, for the vet the first time we had to use special treats and all our powers of persuasion! Mia was also very protective of her tummy and hind end and before she had Peanut, she would kick out at anyone who went near either area.

“With a lot of time, patience, and careful training, Mia’s relationship with people has completely transformed. Seeing her go from being so apprehensive to enjoying a cuddle and being ready to rehome has been amazing. It’s been a very rewarding journey with Mia and I’m so happy that she’s found a loving home.”

Alicia, who had already rehomed a horse from the charity, took Mia in last month.

“Mia is adorable,” she said. “She and Duffy spent five minutes zooming around together when they were first introduced, then they had a bit of a chat together, and that was it: best friends immediately.

“They’d both sadly lost their friend at a similar time – I hadn’t the heart to rush straight into finding a new donkey and I knew Duffy needed time to mourn. When I felt the time was right, Mia came up for rehoming just a couple of days later.

“Having already rehomed from World Horse Welfare once, I was pleased to do my bit by rehoming again to make space for another animal in need to be rescued. I also knew that Mia would have been fully checked over and that any considerations would be disclosed. Jodie explained that I’d probably need food to catch Mia, but after a couple of weeks in her new home she’s very happy to be caught without it. The team at Belwade Farm has done a great job with her and she’s lovely to handle. She’s a very sweet, gentle little donkey and she loves a fuss. I’m so pleased she and Duffy have bonded so well.”

Elderly mare ‘overlooked for her looks and age’ gets second chance in loving home

An elderly mare who had been “overlooked for her unique looks and age” has started her new life in a loving home.

Autumn came into the care of the Blue Cross rehoming centre in Burford in January 2024 after her owner was prosecuted by the RSPCA for neglect.

A Blue Cross spokesperson said Autumn, now 23, was found in a field in “very poor body condition with rain scald, and her spine, ribs and shoulders clearly visible through winter coat”.

Following the prosecution, Autumn joined Blue Cross to find the “loving new home she deserved”.

“Autumn was understandably a bit nervous when she arrived in our care. She was more people-oriented and not very horse-oriented initially – she didn’t know how to be a horse, and it’s clear she had spent more time around people than other horses,” said Lauren Bush, adoptions coordinator at the Blue Cross Burford centre.

“She was a favourite here as she’s such a sweet mare, and we especially liked the way her blaze falls, so it makes her face look wonky. She needed a lot of physiotherapy from the team as she was tight in her back. This could be due to poor breeding or could have been caused if she was used in harness in her previous home. The team used carrot stretches along with plenty of massages, stretches and exercises to help.”

After six months Autumn was transferred to a volunteer foster yard where she “blossomed” in a home environment with other horses.

“She thrived on routine and being in a good home environment in her foster yard but despite her sweet personality, Autumn was overlooked as a companion, most likely due to her size and age,” said Lauren.

This changed when Angharad Hadley-Stone and her sister Rhinannon were looking for a companion horse.

“We originally rehomed Autumn as we were looking for a quiet companion for our other older mare Perdy after she sadly lost her two field mates,” said Miss Stone.

“Autumn needed some time and space to settle but since she’s found her feet she’s really come out of her shell, and she is so lovely to have around. She is such a sweet-natured girl and watching her cheeky personality come out has been so nice to see. Autumn and Perdy have become two peas in a pod and we’re so grateful we could offer Autumn a place to call home with us.”

RSPCA head equine vet Roxane Kirton added that the charity is “delighted” to hear that Autumn has found a loving home.

“We are grateful to the team at Blue Cross for taking such wonderful care of her since her rescue,” said Ms Kirton.

“Her story is a great example of partnership working and how we can all do our bit for every kind, by working together for animal welfare.”

Rescued ponies ‘terrified of humans’ given ‘a second chance at a happy life’

Two rescue ponies have been given a second chance at a happy life after finding a home in time for Christmas.

Pretzel and Peanut were rescued as part of a multi-agency operation involving 25 ponies from Gelligaer Common, in Wales, in July 2023.

HorseWorld, who took Pretzel and Peanut in, said the pair were “completely unhandled, terrified of humans, and in terrible condition”.

“This group of ponies really was one of the most challenging our team have dealt with,” said HorseWorld’s head of equine welfare Sarah Hollister.

“The ponies were so scared of people; they would literally try to climb the walls to get away from you. Sometimes we doubted if we’d ever be able to get them happy with even the gentlest of human touch.”

Pretzel and Peanut lived in a field close to the charity’s rehab yard where they could become accustomed to “comings and goings”, and feel more comfortable with “normal life”. With time and careful training sessions, they became trusting of the HorseWorld grooms.

In November this year two-year-old Pretzel and three-year-old Peanut were rehomed together to start their “new chapter”.

“This story is the epitome of what HorseWorld is all about. We believe every horse deserves a second chance at a happy life,” said Jo Coombs, HorseWorld chief executive.

“There were times when the future of these ponies was in doubt, but our horse-centred rehabilitation and retraining programme and the skills, expertise, patience and dedication of our teams means Peanut and Pretzel are now facing a future even brighter than we could have hoped.

“We wish them and their new family a very happy Christmas.”

Mare ‘flies the flag’ for rescue ponies and creates ‘everlasting friendship’ with young rider

As 2024 comes to an end, equine welfare charity HorseWorld has shone the light on one of its successful rehoming cases, who went on to wow in the show ring this year with her young rider.

Aura was taken in by HorseWorld in 2020 following one of the biggest multi-agency operations in the UK ever, involving 130 neglected horses and ponies rescued from “appalling conditions”.

A HorseWorld spokesperson said Aura was very nervous, severely underweight and suffering from a worm burden and lice infestation. But thanks to expert care from the charity’s team she went on to make a full recovery.

“During her rehabilitation the team identified that the sweet-natured Aura could be suited to work with vulnerable young people as an equine-assisted learning horse, so they started her training to help children cope with social, mental and emotional challenges,” said the spokesperson.

“At the same time they started looking for a suitable foster home where Aura would reach her full potential and help a young person to reach theirs too.”

This home was found with Elizabeth Hembrow and her daughter Coco.

“Since she came to live with us, Aura and Coco have formed a beautiful bond and an everlasting friendship,” said Elizabeth.

“Coco suffers from obsessive compulsive disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and struggles with mainstream education. Aura helps her cope and face life’s challenges.”

Coco and Aura have attended Pony Club rallies, competed in dressage and enjoyed fun rides and gallops across the Mendips “where they love unwinding together”.

This summer they “wowed the crowds and judges” at the Royal Bath and West Show (30 May-1 June).

“Going to the Royal Bath and West show was a big step up for Coco and Aura. The show had a real buzz about it and I was very nervous for them both but every time I checked in with Coco to see how she was feeling she just said ‘I’m fine Mum, I know Aura is the best pony here and I trust her 100%’. She was incredible and I am so proud of them both,” said Elizabeth.

“Aura has stolen our hearts. She is simply perfect and we couldn’t love her any more or imagine life without her.”

HorseWorld chief executive Jo Coombs said the charity loves seeing its rescued horses and ponies thriving in new homes.

“We’re thrilled that Aura has found her perfect home with Coco and that the pair are so successfully flying the flag for HorseWorld rescued horses and others around the UK,” she said.

“We feel an enormous amount of pride in the work we do at HorseWorld seeing these horses, who often have a very sad past, flourish in their new homes.”

Gemma Owen takes in tiny pony: from severe neglect to social media stardom

A tiny pony who was rescued in one of the worst cases an equine welfare officer had ever seen is to become a social media star with Gemma Owen, his rehomer.

The dressage rider and Love Island contestant “fell in love with” yearling Bert, who was one of a group of 19 Shetlands rescued and taken in by World Horse Welfare. His breeder was sent to prison and banned from keeping all animals for life.

Gemma became a patron of the charity last year after she visited its Penny Farm rescue and rehoming centre. It was during the visit she met Bert and offered him a home once he was ready.

“When I first met Bert, I knew he was special,” Gemma said. “His cheeky personality and spirit despite his early hardships moved me deeply. I am thrilled to welcome him into our home and to share his journey with my followers.”

Bert was a few months old when he was rescued by World Horse Welfare, with his mother Lacey, and the other Shetlands, in “one of the worst cases field officer Sarah Tucker had seen”, a spokesperson for the charity said. “Sadly, eight of the ponies needed to be euthanised due to severe health complications, but Bert was one of the lucky survivors.”

H&H reported last month that in July 2023 World Horse Welfare was contacted about concerns for ponies being kept at Wrancarr Lane, Moss, Doncaster. Field officers found 19 Shetland ponies in “varying states of neglect”, and secured the RSPCA’s help to investigate further.

A World Horse Welfare spokesperson said at the time of sentencing that “most of the ponies were overweight, many had overgrown hooves, and a number showed signs of extreme laminitis”.

“The owner had a ‘veneer of respectability’ within the showing world, with two of her ponies well looked-after and in show condition, but she allowed the others to suffer in such a dreadful way, despite having received a previous caution for identical offences,” the spokesperson said today, adding that some of the ponies showed signs of extreme laminitis. Six had to be put down on site and two more later owing to their health issues.

“One of the best parts of my job is seeing ponies like Bert thriving after rescue and knowing that they will be rehomed into loving, safe homes for the rest of their lives,” said Sarah. “I was delighted when I heard that he is going to Gemma and I look forward to finding out how they get on. Bert will certainly keep them entertained and he couldn’t ask for a better home.”

Abandoned pony’s future goes from bleak to bright: ‘I’m so glad we’ve given him a chance’

A native pony abandoned in a field following the death of his owner now has a bright future ahead of him and has brought much-needed companionship to an elderly bereaved horse.

Barley arrived in Blue Cross care after he was found in a farmer’s field in Somerset. Although he was microchipped, his original owner had died.

The 14-year-old had to be gelded, and the charity then started the education that would allow him to find his new home.

The team spent almost a year building Barley’s confidence and the pony started to thrive.

“Barley was initially highly aroused and stressed by other horses, he would spend hours pacing the fence line just to be able to see and hear other horses,” said Blue Cross horse rehoming coordinator Lauren Bush.

“He was reluctant to work with us at the start and he wasn’t opposed to trialling aggressive behaviour, understandably as he didn’t seem to be that well handled.

“Initially we thought Barley may be too tricky to rehome, being a stallion for much of his life.”

But, she said, once Barley was settled, he thrived in a quiet environment with a competent and sympathetic handler.

“He was slowly introduced to other geldings one at a time, before slowly settling in with two youngsters before heading off to his new home,” she said.

Barley has joined borrower Holly Gill and in doing so, has provided a lifeline to his new fieldmate, who had recently lost his lifelong companion.

Holly started looking for a companion for 28-year-old Buzz when she had to had her elderly pony Cassie put down.

“Cassie was also 28 when we had to say goodbye – we had her for 20 years too so it was a devastating time for us and for Buzz,” said Holly.

“I’ve owned Buzz for 20 years so he is very special to me. He is a very friendly chap but can be a little apprehensive about change whether that’s a new water bucket or a new friend!

“We have taken it really slowly with Barley and Buzz, once they were happy over a fence we put them in the field together.

“I’ve noticed them spending more time standing close to each other and grooming, which is lovely to see.”

She added that it has been rewarding to work with Barley and gain his trust.

“The first time he let me catch him, or let me put a fly mask on it felt like we had really achieved something,” added Holly.

“He is still very wary and it’s going to take a lot of time and patience for him to fully trust us, but I’m so glad we’ve given him a chance.”

‘Winter has hit the equine community hard’: cost-of-living concerns continue

Charity rehoming figures have dropped in 2023, as owners continue to feel the effects of the cost-of-living crisis.

Although inflation has eased compared to last year, families continue to face high food, fuel and energy bills. A survey run by the National Equine Welfare Council (NEWC) last winter showed that one in five of more than 8,000 owners surveyed said they were having to consider difficult decisions, such as sale, sharing or euthanasia of their horses, owing to rising costs (news, 13 July).

Redwings chief executive Lynn Cuttress told H&H with the increased cost of living the charity “anticipated an increased number of calls for help”.

“However we haven’t seen the influx of welfare cases we were expecting since then and that seems to be the consensus across the sector – it’s a waiting game and the NEWC survey will be rerun this winter to keep an eye on the state of play as the winter progresses.”

By December Redwings had taken in 104 equines this year, and rehomed 101.

“While this was less than our record 147 homes found in 2022, this is still a vital way that Redwings can continue to manage our capacity, so we are able to continue our life-saving front-line welfare work,” said Ms Cutress.

The RSPCA took in 444 equines in 2023, up 15% on 2022.

“This year we rehomed 82 horses, which is a drop of more than 50% on last year, which is a trend across the rehoming sector as the cost of living takes its toll,” RSPCA equine specialist Mark Kennedy told H&H.

World Horse Welfare had 301 admissions across its four centres, including foals born at the charity from pregnant mares taken in.

“This is around 50 horses higher than [each of] the last two years, but is a return to pre-Covid levels; we took in 369 in 2019. Our rehoming levels have dropped from the record 300 rehomed a year during the pandemic, with 279 rehomed this year, back to more normal levels,” said a World Horse Welfare spokesman.

“Sadly, we continue to see a number of welfare intakes involving large numbers of horses with multi-agency cooperation. All rehomed horses remain in our ownership for life, and we always take them back if circumstances for the rehomers change. Although the number of rehomed horses returned is slightly higher this year, when we look at the proportion of all horses currently out, the return rate has remained stable.”

Bransby Horses took in 119 equines, compared to 150 last year. The charity rehomed 83 in 2023 and 109 in 2022.

“Throughout the year we have responded to abandoned horses that have not been microchipped, this makes it very difficult for us or the authorities to trace and owner. Twenty-two equines have been signed over to the charity under the Control of Horses Act to date this year,” a Bransby spokesman told H&H.

“This winter has hit the equine community hard, so we are expecting an increase in calls for support and welfare concerns as we head into 2024.”

Rescue pony who needed years of veterinary care to enjoy first Christmas in new home

A pony rescued from “horrific conditions” who needed years of veterinary treatment is spending Christmas in her new home.

In 2014 cob mare Audrey was rescued from a site in Wales where “where hundreds of horses were found stranded deep in mud without any food, suffering from malnutrition, worm burdens and infectious diseases”.

A Redwings spokesman said that shortly after taking Audrey in, she was diagnosed with the hoof condition canker. The charity’s veterinary team worked with farriers to remove as much infected tissue as possible, but the condition returned.

“In August 2015 Audrey underwent a procedure under general anaesthetic to strip back her hoof tissue even further, and her stay as an in-patient in the horse hospital began,” said the spokesman.

“Six months later, the vets had to remove more abnormal tissue and sadly in 2016, with treatment options exhausted, the veterinary team considered whether Audrey would ever fully recover, or if she may need to be put down due to the impact it was having on her quality of life.”

Redwings vet Sarah Prior, who cared for Audrey, said canker is a “very frustrating disease” as some cases fail to respond to surgical or medical treatment.

“We had to review how it would affect Audrey in the long term. We decided to give her one last summer, and we dressed her hooves every day, treated them with iodine, put her in some protective boots and kept an eye on her. Then, to our surprise, her condition started to stabilise,” said Ms Prior.

“Due to the possible contagious nature of canker, she had her own special care paddock right next to our hospital and adjacent to other ponies who she could groom over the fence, and she became our hospital mascot, and go-to place if we wanted a cuddle. We also worked with our behaviour team to devise enrichment activities for her, and she learnt tricks and games she would do with the nurses.

“As she seemed so content, we decided to keep monitoring her and that’s what we continued to do for the next few years.”

In 2020 Audrey’s canker improved enough that she was discharged from the hospital to join one of the charity’s herds, with the vets continuing to monitor her and bring her into a woodchip paddock or stable in wet weather.

Then in 2023 the Redwings rehoming team had a request from Lucy White to rehome a non-ridden companion.

“Lucy, a veterinary nurse, was looking for a companion for her cob Fleur. She was able to offer a home with an all-weather turnout area, and was happy to take on a pony who might need a little extra special care. The team immediately thought that Lucy’s home sounded like the perfect fit for Audrey,” said the Redwings spokesman.

“In a sign of just how much Audrey meant to teams across Redwings, her carers came together to throw her a good luck and goodbye party. Redwings nursing manager Louise Gedge, who had been a key part of Audrey’s recovery, even packed a small suitcase of all Audrey’s favourite things to take to her new home.”

Audrey is now “happily settled in” and will be spending her first Christmas with her new guardian family.

“Audrey has been a great addition to our family and does an important job of keeping Fleur company. When I take Fleur out for a ride, Audrey gets a special upgrade and goes into our garden, and because of this has built an extra special relationship with my Alaskan malamute Elsie,” said Lucy.

“She has been brilliant to do all the treatment to her feet, and I think it is a real testament to all the staff at Redwings for making her association with humans so positive despite everything she went through. We feel really lucky to have her, and she is worth her weight in gold.”

Redwings chief executive Lynn Cuttress added that the charity “prides itself on its dedication to sanctuary care”.

“Audrey’s case is an exceptional example of the lengths our teams will go to for the rescued equines in our care,” she said.

“When Audrey was eventually discharged from our horse hospital we were all delighted that their dedication had paid off, and what more could we have wished for for Christmas than to see her so settled in a guardian home so perfectly matched to her needs.”

Some 50 colts of a wild and “widely misunderstood” breed will be looking for new homes – which is an “increasingly difficult task”.

After the annual round-up this autumn, the surplus colts will be removed from the herd of wild Carneddau mountain ponies, who are allowed to move freely in Snowdonia, to prevent overgrazing of the area.

Gareth Wyn Jones, secretary of the Carneddau Mountain Pony Society, said finding homes for the ponies is hard, as the “unique breed is widely misunderstood and thought to offer little opportunity to horse lovers”.

The “outspoken hill farmer” is to showcase the versatility of the breed at the GWCT Welsh Game Fair, at Vaynol Estate in Gwynedd on 9 and 10 September.

“Finding homes for all the ponies that need to be rehomed is a huge undertaking,” he said.

“Many prospective homes wrongly assume the Carneddau mountain ponies will arrive bucking, rearing and being totally unmanageable – like a wild mustang in a cowboy movie.

“Understandably people do not like the idea of taking on an undomesticated animal but these clever ponies can adapt to their new, repurposed lives in just a few days [in experienced hands]. Those that have been adopted go on to enjoy riding, driving and showing.”

All the ponies are rounded up over three weekends in November for an annual health check. Seven families of hill farmers have the right to graze ponies on the 13,500 acres of Snowdonia, and the gathering of ponies attracts visitors from across the world.

“These wild ponies date back to the Bronze Age,” said Gareth. “Some people think they are just a tourist attraction but they are integral to the ecology of the mountains. Their grazing style keeps everything in balance and even helps some species thrive such as the endangered red-billed chough and dung beetle.”

The Carneddau Mountain Pony Society will give a demo in the main arena at the Welsh Game Fair to “show visitors how versatile and easy-going the diminutive ponies are”.

“We hope that this PR exercise will help us raise awareness and prompt more families to enquire about adoption,” Gareth said. “We do not charge for the pony – new owners are only required to pay to have the animal microchipped.”

Charity rehoming figures remained steady in 2022 – but concerns have been shared that an “increase in unwanted horses could be just around the corner”, as the cost-of-living crisis remains a major worry.

As inflation, fuel, and energy costs soared across the UK this year, there are few who have not been affected, including in the equestrian industry. Statistics from the RSPCA’s Animal Kindness Index 2022, a UK-wide survey, showed the cost of living crisis is potentially “one of the biggest threats to the welfare of animals across the country”.

The RSPCA took in 365 horses by December, and a charity spokesman told H&H the RSPCA is “extremely concerned” about the impact of the ongoing crisis on owners’ finance, and consequently their equines.

“A worrying trend we saw at the end of summer is that the condition of some equines entering our care was very poor – often around 0.5 body condition score,” he said, adding that this was a “huge red flag”.

“There are other signs of the crisis starting to impact equines, with charities which accept them from the general public reporting more approaches from owners regarding potential surrender of their horses or asking for advice about care costs.”

The RSPCA rehomed 186 equines last year, which left the charity in a “better position at the beginning of winter than it might have been”, but the spokesman said capacity issues at RSPCA centres mean it is continuing to seek horse fosterers to help look after the equines in its care.

Bransby Horses took in a similar amount of equines to previous years, with 155 admissions between January and November. But in the same period it had 50 calls from owners looking to sign their horses over owing to financial difficulties. The charity is concerned an “increase of unwanted horses could be just around the corner”.

“We think the number of requests to charities to take in equines from private homes is steadily increasing across the board and we are concerned routine care could lessen as people struggle financially – which in turn will be compromising welfare short- and long-term,” said Rachel Jenkinson, Bransby welfare manager.

“We understand the current financial situation is putting increased strain on owners. All we would say is please do not lose hope – give Bransby Horses a call if you are struggling, we are here to help and can signpost you to possible solutions.

“While it is sadly not possible for us to say yes to all private intake requests, we will always respond to welfare concerns, abandonments and those in immediate danger.”

A Bransby spokesman added that ”demand continues to be high” for rehoming, with 109 equines placed in foster homes during 2022.

Redwings chief executive Lynn Cuttress told H&H it had been “a year of consolidation” for the charity, given the cost-of-living challenges.

“We’ve had to be shrewd and negotiate the best terms we can get on everything we purchase and are still facing huge increases in feed and hay bills plus electricity and other utilities,” she said, adding that despite the “ongoing difficult circumstances” the charity was able to take in 109 horses and ponies this year up to December.

“We’ve worked hard to find homes for 147 equines between January and November. We hope people will continue to support the important rehoming work of registered charities next year but would urge people to think carefully about taking on a horse at this time,” she said.

A World Horse Welfare spokesman told H&H at the end of 2022 its four centres were at around 75% capacity, and the “strong demand” for rehoming had helped keep space going into winter.

“As winter bites, we are alert to the predicted effects of increased cost of living,” he said.

The charity had rehomed 312 equids this year by mid-December and taken in 274, not including foals born at the rescue centres.

Elderly rescue gelding will ‘only know love and a full belly’ in new forever home

An elderly gelding found living without food and water will “only know love and a full belly” from now on after finding his “forever home”.

Maddison was transferred to the Blue Cross in May, having been taken in and cared for by the RSPCA. The 20-year-old gelding is now enjoying Christmas in his retirement home.

“He’s only been with us for a few months and is doing amazingly well,” said new owner Michelle.

“He’s getting on so well with our other two horses and is loving being pampered, he really is the sweetest guy in the world. He absolutely loves his food, which is not a surprise given his history, and he doesn’t have a bad bone in his body.”

Michelle added that Maddison is now in his “forever home”.

“He will only know love and a full belly from here on out. I hope others reading his story will consider taking on an older companion horse as it’s so rewarding,” she said.

“Because our other two horses live at our house and only have each other, it was a nightmare trying to ride as they would get stressed being left alone. Having Maddison has changed all that as they always have a friend with them. It’s been a game-changer.”

Clare Bevins, horse welfare supervisor at Blue Cross in Burford, said the charity regularly works with other welfare organisations to help find new homes for horses in need.

“Maddison is a sweet gentleman, and we were happy to find him a loving retirement home following his ordeal. We always urge anyone who is struggling to care for their horse to get in touch with a charity for help sooner rather than later,” she said.

“With the cost of living crisis we have never been more needed and are helping a number of owners who can no longer care for their horses. We can take horses into our rehoming centre or can also help to find new homes through our Home Direct service, where the animal stays in its home until we find a new owner.”

RSPCA inspector Tina Word added: “After such a horrible ordeal, to see Maddison thriving in his new home means the world”.

“It’s the very reason I get up every day to do my job. Caring for horses is a huge responsibility and it is never acceptable to leave an animal to suffer,” she said.

“Sadly, the worsening cost-of-living crisis means we and other welfare charities are likely going to see many more cases of neglect like this, but by continuing to work together, we will do everything we can to be a voice for animals.”

Man jailed after collapsed horse with ruptured eyeball put down in ‘harrowing case’

A man has been sent to prison after a horse found with a ruptured eyeball and unable to get to its feet had to be put down to end his suffering in a “harrowing” case.

Ben Neill, 38, of no fixed abode, was sentenced at Barnstaple Magistrates’ Court on 3 May. At a trial on 21 January, heard in his absence as he failed to attend, he was found guilty of three animal welfare offences; causing unnecessary suffering to a geldings Eddy and Tye, and failing to meet the needs of Tye, Darcy and Dorcas.

In March 2021 RSPCA inspector Claire Ryder launched an investigation after a member of the public called to report a horse collapsed in a muddy field in Landkey, near Barnstaple.

An RSPCA spokesman said a vet attended and found thoroughbred type Eddy in a “terrible state”, unable to lift his head from the mud he was lying in, “let alone stand”. The vet believed Eddy had been down for some time, she was unable to get him to his feet, and there was “no alternative” but to put him down on welfare grounds to end his suffering.

Ms Ryder said in her witness statement that Eddy’s hip bones were protruding and she could clearly see his spine and ribs. The gelding also had a ruptured eyeball.

“The horse was lying in deep, wet mud. You could clearly see where he was trying to get up as there was a build-up of wet mud around the horse’s head, neck and back,” she said.

Ponies Tye, Darcy and Dorcas were in a field next to Eddy with limited grazing and no shelter. The RSPCA spokesman said Tye was in poor condition, had severely overgrown hooves and was lame. He had difficulty walking, with a “rocking motion” as his hooves met the ground.

The vet concluded the ponies were “likely to suffer” and they were signed over to the RSPCA. They were found to have lice and parasites, and their teeth were “in need of attention” with sharp points. They required sedation before their hooves could be trimmed.

“Regardless of cause, veterinary intervention should have been sought for Eddy when faced with such extensive weight loss. Suffering unquestionably could have been prevented had they sought advice sooner,” read the vet evidence provided in court.

“I have no doubt that Eddy and Tye were suffering unreasonably and unnecessarily and that this suffering had been present for at least a month.”

In mitigation Neill told magistrates Eddy had been “jumping and bouncing around that morning”. He said he had done his best, he had not deliberately harmed the animals and he had got out of his depth.

During sentencing magistrates told Neill he had shown little remorse. They highlighted his lack of appreciation of the animals’ suffering, that he failed to adhere to previous warnings and advice from the RSPCA, and that he saw the horses every day and must have known the condition they were in – particularly Eddy. The magistrates thanked the RSPCA for bringing the case and said it was the “most harrowing” they have had to deal with in the court.

“We have listened to the case from the RSPCA and seen photos of the horse and ponies – Eddy had a ruptured eyeball, was hypothermic in a collapsed state, emaciated and unable to access food and water,” they said.

Neill was banned from keeping equines for life, and cannot appeal this for 10 years. He was sentenced to six months in prison. In April 2021, after these offences were committed, the Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Bill was made law, which increased the maximum sentence for animal welfare offences from six months to five years in prison.

A second person was sentenced on 23 November 2021 for causing unnecessary suffering to Tye and for failing to meet the needs of Tye, Darcy and Dorcus. She was disqualified from keeping equines for 10 years, and cannot apply for the ban to be lifted for five years. She was made subject to a six-month curfew and was ordered to pay £400 costs.

The RSPCA spokesman said Dorcus was later put down owing to the discovery of “untreatable” tumours. Tye and Darcy were rehomed to equine rescue charity Hugs Foundation, in Cornwall, which offers therapeutic interventions to young people, the elderly, and military personnel.

“Darcy enjoys being brushed and led by children who visit the charity and Tye is currently on loan as part of their foster scheme and is loving life being spoiled with love and care,” he said.

‘Hours from death’: remarkable recovery of pony found collapsed in filthy shed

A pony who was found “hours from death” collapsed in a cow shed has made a remarkable recovery to become a “picture of health”.

Carl, named by the RSPCA’s vet team after inspector Carl Larsson who found him, was discovered on a farm in Lancashire last summer.

The charity had been called to investigate concerns about dogs at the property and while Mr Larsson was assessing conditions at the farm, he stumbled across a cattle barn and found the young pony collapsed in filthy straw.

He called the vet team and the pony’s life was saved. The person responsible for Carl at the time of his neglect has not been traced.

“When Carl arrived with us, he was a shadow of the pony he is today,” said Emma Tallentire, equine deputy manager at RSPCA Felledge Equine Centre in Co. Durham.

“He’d been through such a lot before he was rescued. He was found collapsed, cold, lethargic and in poor condition — the inspector said he was likely just hours from death — so understandably, he wasn’t very trusting of people.

“We worked to build up Carl’s trust slowly, and allocated one groom in particular to work with him to have lots of one-to-one time. Over the following few months he grew in confidence, and now he’ll happily have his feet picked out and he enjoys being groomed.

“He’s come a long way and we’re really proud of him, he’s very sociable in the field and enjoys playing with his pony friends.”

Carl has made such a good recovery that he is now available for rehoming.

“Carl is coming up to two years old and standing at approximately 12hh, and still growing,” added Ms Tallentire.

“He is a sweet pony and easy to look after, although it’s important that potential adopters know he can still be a little spooky and headshy, so we are looking for a knowledgeable person who is competent with young inexperienced horses so they can continue his education and basic handling.”

Record year for rehoming but concerns over future of horse demand

Welfare charities have reported a record-breaking year for rehoming, but concerns have been shared on what lies ahead if current demand for horses slows down in the coming year.

The horse-buying market has continued to boom in 2021, but charities warn this could bring future welfare challenges.

World Horse Welfare chief executive Roly Owers said there is “no doubt the market remains buoyant” but that it would be “foolhardy” not to recognise the challenges that lie ahead.

“This includes our concerns around the fate of horses that might have been missold or are simply not fit for purpose, as all too often these equines enter into a downward spiral of frequently changing hands at ever-decreasing value, ending up as welfare cases,” he told H&H.

RSPCA equine welfare expert Mark Kennedy told H&H the charity shares these concerns and is worried the current high demand for horses and ponies will drop over time.

“Any economic downturn, pandemic-driven or otherwise, which reduces household incomes and ability to care properly for equines, along with the activity of irresponsible breeders believing in a perpetually buoyant market for horses, could easily return us to the situation of oversupply of horses and ponies without good homes to go to,” he said.

“This would return us to ‘Britain’s horse problem’; the abandonment, neglect and suffering which has plagued equines and welfare charities for years. One piece of good news that might help address this is Defra’s commitment to review of the equine identification regulations [news, 21 October], which might improve their effectiveness in tying abandoned and neglected horses to those responsible for them.”

The charities have reported “many positives” to come out of 2021 including court cases delayed by Covid concluding, and increased rehoming figures. World Horse Welfare has rehomed 350 equines, Redwings 126, and the RSPCA more than 300 this year.

“Our rehoming success has been thanks, in part, to the conclusion of several large prosecution cases, where we had taken in dozens of horses and ponies who were still on our farms up to two years later while the cases were resolved,” said Mr Owers, adding that World Horse Welfare is in a “good position” heading into 2022, but the charity is not seeing any “let-up” in the welfare need, including cases involving large numbers of equines.

Redwings’ Lynn Cutress said the charity is “heartened” to see that people continued to look towards charities to rehome horses during the pandemic.

“For the first time this year we are on course to rehome one horse for every horse we rescue. As a sanctuary that has been operating at capacity for many years, one of the most important ways we can help more horses is to try to make space through rehoming, so this is an exceptional achievement by our teams. We hope even more people will support the rehoming efforts of registered charities next year,” she told H&H.

‘Flying the flag for rescued horses’: final farewell to ‘very special’ rescue pony

A welfare charity is remembering a “very special” pony who “championed the cause” of rehoming rescue horses.

Redwings, which has in 2021 recorded a record-breaking year for its rehoming scheme, has paid tribute to Noel, who died in November aged 25. The part-bred Arab was rescued in 1998 by Ada Cole Memorial Stables, which merged with Redwings in 2005, alongside his companion Mistletoe.

“The pair had been left to fend for themselves while their owner was in prison. They were both underweight and infested with lice, and Noel had a significant worm burden,” said a spokesman for the charity.

In 2001 Noel was rehomed by Hayley Ward and the pair went on to enjoy success in showing and showjumping.

“Throughout their time together, Noel and Hayley won countless rosettes and trophies and were supreme champions of the Kimpton Horse Show in Hertfordshire a record-breaking three times,” said the spokesman.

Hayley said when Noel arrived, the pair “just clicked” and he had been a “superstar” ever since.

“He was an absolute cheeky monkey but was just cracking and won so much for me. Our successes always meant so much to us but were always even more of an achievement because of Noel’s background,” she said.

“Everyone knew he was a Redwings pony, and he would always be included in publicity – flying the flag for rescued horses – which always made it extra special.”

During 2021 Redwings rehomed 128 horses and ponies, more than 50% more than 2020.

“As the sanctuary has been operating at capacity for many years, this milestone is an important one, and emphasises that one of the most important ways we can continue to help more horses in need is to try to make space through rehoming,” said Rachel Angell, head of Norfolk equine operations.

“2021’s record figure is a testament to the hard work of our teams throughout the sanctuary who work tirelessly to rehabilitate our rescued horses, so they can go on to enjoy lives in guardian homes.”

‘The rest is history’: abandoned pony enjoying new life after ‘makeover’

An abandoned pony rescued from wasteland who underwent a “makeover” is enjoying life as a much-loved companion in her permanent home.

Mandy was discovered alone in 2015, and when her owner could not be identified, she was taken in by the Horses and Ponies Protection Association (HAPPA). The 12.1hh mare, thought to be around eight years old at the time, was underweight and suffering from a skin infection, mud fever, and a lice infestation.

A spokesman for the charity said Mandy was nervous of people and the rescue team was “completely in the dark” about what interaction the mare had had with humans.

“She only trusted one person in the equine care team, Lucy, and would do anything for her. Thankfully Lucy had worked with handling feral ponies like Mandy before and was a natural with her,” said a HAPPA spokesman.

The charity launched the “Mandy makeover appeal” to raise funds towards the mare’s recovery.

“The uptake to turn this little girl back into a beauty was great. She even had Miss Lancashire Galaxy visit her with gifts for her makeover,” said the spokesman.

Having completed her rehabilitation In 2017, Mandy found her home with the Singleton family, as a companion. The family had lost a horse unexpectedly and was looking for a companion for their granddaughter’s pony.

“I looked on HAPPA’s website and went to visit a sweet little pony that I thought would be suitable. However, it was suggested that I have a look at another pony while I was there.” said Mrs Singleton.

“When I first saw Mandy I thought ‘Oh no what a grump!’. She was standing at the back of her stable, with her ears back. I was given a grooming kit and asked if I would like to groom her. To my amazement, she was brilliant and let me brush her and pick out her feet with no problems. I think she had decided she wanted to come and live with us.”

The Singleton family said “the rest is history”.

“Mandy came to live with us and is an absolute star. She settled in very quickly and is a lovely pony with a big character and attitude and is so easy to look after although she does get into mischief at times,” said Mrs Singleton.

“She is a very happy pony, loves to be out in the field whatever the weather and also enjoys walking in hand with me around the estate where we live. We love her dearly and can’t think of being without her.”

‘After eight long years’ elderly rescue mare finds new home in time for Christmas

An elderly rescue pony who spent eight years in the care of a welfare charity has finally found a home, just in time for Christmas.

In 2013 Wish was rescued with three others from Manmoel Common in South Wales. The “nervous” mare, then 14 years old, was heavily pregnant and struggling with a “very painful” abscess in her jaw, which required her to have a tooth removed.

A Bransby spokesman said two weeks after her rescue, Wish gave birth to healthy colt Whisper, but the following weeks were “not easy” for the mare as she cared for him and struggled to put on weight. Whisper later found a home, but Wish remained at the charity where staff continued to work with her to build up her confidence.

“After eight long years of searching for the right home for Wish, it was love at first sight for Cat, who needed a companion pony for her mare, Pearl,” said the spokesman.

“Every team member who worked with Wish during her many years with the charity is over the moon to know she has settled in well with her new fosterer.”

Cat said the second she saw Wish’s “cheeky face” she fell in love instantly.

“Within a few days of her arrival she became best friends with Pearl and although nervous at the start, she could be persuaded to do anything for a treat,” she said.

“Wish has been with us now for just a little more than a month and has turned into a cheeky little monkey. She canters around the field with Pearl and pulls out electric fencing to have her own personal mud bath – we know it’s her from the trail of tiny hoofprints.

“She has come on leaps and bounds since we have been handling her every day. She is the sweetest, cheekiest pony we could have ever wished for and I so hope she will be with us for many years to come.”

Bransby visitor centre team leader Shell Craven added that Wish was a “very sweet” pony, who was lovely to care for.

“She would get nervous in some unknown situations but always trusted us to support her. It felt for ever waiting for her to find a home but we are so happy she’s found the perfect home and it was worth the wait.”

Spindles Farm survivor promotes rehoming with a little help from Alan Titchmarsh

Three rescue ponies, including a Spindles Farm survivor, who found their “fairytale endings” have joined television host and gardener Alan Titchmarsh on screen to help spread the world about the importance of rehoming.

Miniature Shetlands Tinkerbell and her “best friend” Miss Muffet from Redwings’ Ada Cole visitor centre featured in an episode of ITV’s Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh on 19 December. They were joined by former Redwings resident Puck, who was rehomed by Victoria Gange-Parry six years ago.

Alan can be seen meeting the ponies as he discusses the charity’s work with Redwings’ staff Jude and Hollie, and finds out more about the importance of rehoming equines.

Tinkerbell was born at the charity in 2008 when her mum Elsie was rescued from “appalling neglect” at Spindle Farm, Amersham. Elsie was part of a rescue involving more than 100 other equines, including Miss Muffett, where they had been left without basic care, food and water. Puck was rescued from the Welsh commons in 2003 when he was discovered in poor condition and “struggling to survive”. Puck now competes in showjumping and dressage with Victoria.

“It was wonderful to meet Alan and have the opportunity to introduce him to some of our rescued ponies,” said Ada Cole yard manager Hollie.

New rules ‘to stop the horror cases’: Scotland introduces licensing of rescue centres

SCOTLAND has become the first country in the UK to introduce mandatory licences for animal rescue centres in a “positive step” for welfare – but challenges have been highlighted around ensuring the appropriate training of inspectors.

The regulation, which came into force on 1 September, requires rescue centres and sanctuaries that keep five equines or more to apply for a licence from their local authority in order to operate.

SSPCA chief superintendent Mike Flynn told H&H previously anyone could start a rescue centre, but the new requirements will bring sanctuaries in line with other welfare legislation to make sure animals are being cared for by people with the relevant knowledge and facilities. Mr Flynn said while the regulations were primarily brought in owing to the issues around dog rescues, there have been “a few unfortunate cases” over the years involving equine sanctuaries which have resulted in prosecution.

“These regulations are to stop some of the horror cases seen in the past where a sanctuary fell through the net because there were no [licence] requirements,” he said.

“Often it’s people who start off with the best intentions and will take in a horse here and there, but by the time the SSPCA or any other agency gets involved some have turned into animal hoarders and don’t rehome them. When one of these sanctuaries goes wrong it tends to be a major problem. If a local authority is keeping its eye on them and not allowing them to go over their numbers, it should make a great difference. This isn’t to put a rescue or sanctuary out of business – it’s about everyone coming up to a decent standard.”

Local authorities will enforce the licences and can appoint local authority staff to inspect the premises as part of the application process. Vets or the SSPCA can also be appointed to carry out inspections, but this is not a legislative requirement.

In the World Horse Welfare Scottish equine manifesto published this month (news, 23 September) the charity urged the Scottish Government to commit to appropriate training and resourcing of enforcement bodies to ensure the success of the licences.

“The new legislation is a positive step in ensuring quality care of equines in sanctuaries and providing reassurance to the public who support these establishments that welfare comes first,” said Roly Owers, World Horse Welfare chief executive. “While we recognise the main driver of this legislation is the dog trade, it has real potential to deliver positive improvements in equine welfare. To do this, there will need to be species-specific guidance and upskilling of those appointed to inspect these establishments.

“There is a clear need for these inspectors to have prior experience of horse rehabilitation or welfare cases as, by their very nature, the horses these sanctuaries care for often have complex needs and will be at various stages of the rehabilitation process. There will be a real challenge facing inspectors to ascertain whether there is a welfare issue during inspection, and we have concerns this could lead to cases of poor welfare being overlooked or, conversely, inspectors mistaking early stage rehabilitation for poor welfare standards and establishments being closed down.”

Mr Owers added the charity looks forward to supporting this legislation and added the equine welfare sector will continue to engage with the Scottish Government to ensure any “difficulties” that arise can be addressed.

“This will also help inform our campaigns in the other UK countries, as we urge their governments to introduce similar legislation.”

A Scottish Government spokesman told H&H the Scottish Government takes animal welfare “very seriously”.

“These important new measures aim to ensure they further protect animal welfare and ensure they experience the best quality of life possible,” he said.

“We would encourage operators of animal sanctuaries and those engaging in animal rehoming to familiarise themselves with the changes to the law and, where required, ensure they apply for and obtain the relevant licence.”

In October 2020 a voluntary code of practice was launched by the Welsh Government, drafted by the Animal Welfare Network for Wales, calling for animal welfare establishments to agree to deliver “exemplary levels” of care and encourage the highest standard of husbandry (news, 15 October 2020). A two-year window was set to gauge the work of the code, before regulation is created. At the time the RSPCA told H&H the charity was working with the UK Government on guidelines for rescues in England.

Neglected pony found with maggot-infested wound enjoys showing success in new home

A pony found with a maggot-infested wound caused by an embedded headcollar has found a new home and is showing promise in the show ring.

Moses was rescued from a site in Walsall in autumn 2019 by World Horse Welfare and spent four days in a vet hospital receiving urgent treatment. The 14.1hh gelding went on to make a full recovery under the care of the staff at the charity’s Penny Farm.

Three weeks ago four-year-old Moses was rehomed by Millie Russell in Leeds.

“I’ve always had horses but it’s been a dream to rescue one and support a charity,” 18-year-old Millie told H&H.

“Initially I had enquired about another one of World Horse Welfare’s horses but he was rehomed, and I was told about Moses. I went to see him and I fell in love.”

Millie said Moses immediately settled in and was soon playing with her herd of five horses.

“It was like he’d been here years. He’s so chilled out,” she said.

“I’ve been doing lots of hacking with him and my mum, who is 50, is learning to ride on him. He doesn’t bat an eyelid at anything.”

Millie took Moses to a local unaffiliated show recently, to positive feedback.

“The judges said he could qualify for Horse of the Year Show one day,” she said. “We’ve registered with the Coloured Horse & Pony Society and hope to do some qualifiers in the future.

“We also hope to try some jumping and dressage. He’s only young so we will see what he enjoys doing.”

Millie recommends rehoming a rescue horse and pony.

“I was quite worried at first about the interviews but it was a great process to go through,” she said.

“Moses was a real farm favourite and his cheeky personality was really able to shine through as he has recovered,” said Zoe Clifford, Penny Farm centre promotion officer.

Bright future for abandoned ponies rescued from flooded Wellingborough site

A group of “emaciated, sick and nervous” abandoned ponies rescued from flooded land in Wellingborough have nearly all found homes more than a year on.

In February 2020 a large-scale multi-agency operation took place to rescue 43 ponies from the north Northamptonshire site. Of the group, 11 were taken in by the Blue Cross, five of whom were pregnant and gave birth last year.

A Blue Cross spokesman said many of the ponies were very thin, covered in lice, and had little experience of being handled. It is understood they had been dumped in the area for unauthorised grazing and the landowner was able to seize the horses with the help of the RSPCA under the Control of Horses Act. The owners could not be identified as the ponies were not microchipped.

“While at Blue Cross, the ponies all needed intensive work to help them get used to humans and being handled, and the team at Rolleston spent every day encouraging the ponies accept human touch,” said the spokesman.

“The ponies were slowly introduced to allowing handlers to put headcollars on them, be groomed and have their feet handled. For some they learnt quickly, but for others it took weeks and even months.”

Most of the group have found new homes including mares Eden and Soar who were rehomed together, with their foals River and Victory. Ribble and Nidd went to a home together in Wales, and foals Bunny and Bumblebee have been rehomed together with the hope they will become riding or driving ponies. Tweed, Bumblebee’s mother, remains under veterinary care, having arrived with severe liver damage.

The spokesman said one particularly nervous pony, Dove, is still undergoing training to have her feet picked up for the farrier and vet checks.

Blue Cross rehoming coordinator Verity Anderton-Johnson said all the ponies were in “such a sorry state” when they arrived.

“We are used to helping abandoned, nervous ponies but to have so many all at once was another level. It makes us so happy to see them come out of their shell and be able to go to their first real loving homes,” she said.

Ponies rescued from the Whispering Willows “sanctuary” are looking forward to a brighter future in new permanent homes.

Frankie, Barbie (pictured, above) and Dec (below) are just three of the 137 horses removed from Whispering Willows in November 2019. They, and all the others taken to World Horse Welfare’s Penny Farm, have now found new homes.

Frankie, now three, was underweight, with a high worm burden and “terrified of human contact” when he was rescued.

“It has taken a lot of time and experienced nursing and handling in the charity’s care to turn him into the happy, healthy and confident young horse that he now is,” a spokesman for World Horse Welfare said. Frankie was one of 137 horses and ponies rescued in a multi-agency operation, also involving the RSPCA, Redwings, the British Horse Society, the Horse Trust, Blue Cross, The Mare & Foal Sanctuary and The Donkey Sanctuary.

World Horse Welfare took 47 of the ponies. Zoe Clifford, visitor officer at Penny Farm Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Lancashire, said: “It’s always wonderful to see ponies that came to us in such a poor state reach the stage where they are ready to move on to the next phase of their lives in the care of rehomers.

“Seeing the contrast between the terrified little things that arrive and the confident, sleek animals that leave us really shows the amazing work the team does in turning these animals around. But the reality is that it’s taken a while to get to this point and that illustrates just how much effort, time and resources are needed to care for these animals properly.”

Zoe added that the Whispering Willows group was a “particular challenge for us here on the yard”.

‘To have so many feral ponies arrive at the same time took a real team effort to work with them to gain trust and begin the rehabilitation process,” she said.

“Working with ponies like this over several months creates a real bond with the yard staff and every step offers a sense of achievement as we see them develop both physically and mentally to a stage where they can be rehomed. Lots of the group, like Frankie, were all youngsters (under three years old) so it’s then really important that we can match them up with rehomers who can carry on their education. It’s always rewarding to catch up on their development and Frankie is really settled in his new home and going from strength to strength.”

Barbie and Dec were also underweight, sick and scared when they arrived at Penny Farm, but both were rehomed together just before Christmas by Heidi and her family.

Heidi said: “I was only intending to get one companion pony for our horses, but when I saw Dec and Barbie together my heart melted. They are so sweet and I cannot repeat often enough what incredibly well-mannered ponies they are.

“The team at Penny Farm have done an amazing job, the ponies are in fantastic condition and they lead in headcollars better than any of our horses do. They run to the gate to see us when we come to take them in, they are so friendly!”

The owner of the Whispering Willows sanctuary, Sandra Jane Kvaerneng Stolp, pleaded guilty to four offences under the Animal Welfare Act, on 15 February, and was banned from keeping all horses for 10 years and ordered to pay £1,000 in costs and a £90 victim surcharge. She must also serve a tagged 20-week curfew and must not leave her home between 9pm and 6am. The court heard in mitigation Stolp was struggling financially to care for the more than 100 horses in her care.

Record-breaking number of horses rehomed during pandemic

World Horse Welfare recorded a record-breaking year for rehoming in 2020, as supporters “stepped up to the plate” despite the challenges caused by the pandemic.

While the charity was unable to rehome horses during the first lockdown, and had to make adaptations to the application and rehoming processes, it rehomed 356 horses during 2020. The previous record was 350 in 2015.

Deputy chief executive Tony Tyler said it was a “truly amazing achievement”, and down to the fantastic supporters who had offered horses and ponies homes.

“It is also testament to our incredible teams at each of the farms, who have continued to care for and prepare the horses for rehoming throughout the restrictions. They have had to adapt their way of working and, in turn, we have had to make changes to the way people apply and how we process those applications. It’s definitely been the year of virtual home visits,” he said.

“World Horse Welfare is the UK’s largest equine rescue and rehoming charity, and rehoming is the ultimate aim for every horse coming into the charity’s care. Each horse that is rehomed frees up a vital space at one of the rescue centres but, sadly, there are always more horses needing help.”

A report, Britain’s Horse Problem, published in December by a number of equine welfare charities including World Horse Welfare, revealed how the pandemic affected charities, and how it is also expected to create “significantly more” welfare problems at a time when charities are least able to cope with them.

“World Horse Welfare’s newly launched rehoming website sets out the rehoming process clearly and makes applications straightforward, and an engaging animation explains the rehoming and application process,” said a charity spokesman.

“Rehomers receive an honest assessment of their chosen horse and their capabilities, as well as ongoing support and the reassurance that if their circumstances change, the rehomed horse can be returned.”

Pony found in garden shed ‘in pain with every step’ put down

A Shetland pony found in a garden shed, and “in pain with every step”, has been put down, while 16 other horses and donkeys living in filth have been rescued.

Ivan Ballantyne, 76, and Jeannie Winskill, 44, of Southwaite, Carlisle, were sentenced at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court on 11 January. The pair pleaded guilty to two charges; allowing seven donkeys to suffer and failing to meet the needs of 17 equines (a Shetland pony, two cobs and 14 donkeys) between 4 January and 4 February 2020. Winskill also pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to the Shetland pony.

An RSPCA spokesman told H&H that following concerns raised by members of the public, the Donkey Sanctuary attended the property in August 2019. Return visits were made in December 2019 and January 2020 but the pair failed to comply with welfare advice given.

An RSPCA investigation was launched after the Donkey Sanctuary found the basic welfare needs of the animals were not being met, and some of the donkeys needed urgent veterinary and farriery treatment. On 4 February 2020, the charities attended the property with a vet, and officers from Cumbria Police.

“Donkeys with overgrown hooves were seen struggling to walk through the deep mud – they seemed uncomfortable as they moved. There was a lack of shelter, hard standing and anywhere clean and dry for the animals to rest,” said RSPCA deputy chief inspector Carl Larsson.

“The sheds provided were too small and unsanitary, a dead rat was seen within the soiled straw at the back of one. Straw put down for the animals was sodden with faeces, urine and presumably rainwater – they appeared not to have been mucked out in a long time. There was also a muck heap that had hay on the top, which two horses and the donkeys were feeding from.”

Mr Larsson said a Shetland pony was found confined in a “garden shed”.

“He barely had room to turn around. It was difficult to watch as the poor animal reluctantly struggled to walk and appeared to be in pain with every step,” he said.

“An independent vet certified such was his suffering he sadly needed to be put to sleep immediately in his own interest.”

The RSPCA spokesman said when the vet examined the remaining animals, she found some of the donkeys had lice, were very lame and were struggling to walk due to overgrown hooves. The equines were removed by the police and the donkeys were taken to a Donkey Sanctuary holding base where they received farriery and veterinary care. The two cobs were taken into the care of the RSPCA and it is hoped they will be rehomed in future.

“The donkeys have since all improved considerably, but some of their journeys to full recovery will be long. Ownership of the donkeys will now be given to the Donkey Sanctuary,” said the RSPCA spokesman.

“Some will need lifelong care due to the extent of their neglect, while others may be considered for the charity’s rehoming scheme in the future.”

The Donkey Sanctuary’s head of welfare Hannah Bryer said sadly situations like this are not uncommon.

“Lack of appropriate hoof care is still one of the most common welfare issues faced by donkeys in the UK today,” she said.

“Our welfare team works throughout Britain to offer advice and information about the easy steps that can be taken to avoid this type of suffering.”

In mitigation the court heard that neither defendant had any previous convictions. Ballantye received a 16-week curfew order, and Winskill was sentenced to 15 rehabilitation activity requirement days and a 12-week curfew order. They were banned from keeping equines for 10 years and must each pay £750 costs.

Charity reports huge surge in demand from rehomers during pandemic

A major equine charity has rehomed a record number of horses this year despite challenges owing to the coronavirus pandemic.

Redwings Horse Sanctuary had an increase of 75% in the number of horses finding new homes compared to last year, rehoming more horses since May than in the whole of 2019.

New rehoming centres as well as using technology to find new ways to match rescued equines with potential rehomers, such as virtual home checks, were in part behind the increase.

“Lockdown came just as we were about to enter our busiest season for rehoming enquiries and our new rehoming centres were getting started on training their first intake of ponies, so it was a really disappointing to have to press pause on our scheme at that time,” said Rachel Angell, Redwings’ head of Norfolk equine operations who heads the charity’s rehoming scheme.

“While unfortunately there are still some restrictions around rehoming our ridden horses, thanks to the adaptions we made to our application process, we have been able to safely rehome our unbacked project ponies and non-ridden companions since lockdown. Even with the increased demand, we were careful to ensure our priority remained finding responsible guardians who could offer long-term homes and it’s been a joy to see such a record number of our horses successfully finding new families this year.

“By rehoming a rescued horse from a registered charity, they have helped to create space at the sanctuary so we can help more horses in desperate need in the future.”

Redwings Mocha was one of the first ponies to complete his training at the newly opened Oxhill centre and to then be rehomed via the virtual process.

Mocha was one of 23 horses rescued in 2011 from a site in Northern Ireland, who were found living in appalling conditions.

Once at Redwings they were named after breakfast items and the group became

known as ‘The Breakfast Club’.

He joined his rehomer, Debbie, as an unbroken project. She arranged for him to be professionally started and the pair now enjoy hacking together.

“I am so proud of him. He has learnt so much in such a short space of time. His trainer

said he was by far the best horse she had ever backed which I’m sure is down to the groundwork done at Redwings,” she added. “In our hacks around the village he is never fazed by anything, I am amazed by him and he’s a little superstar!”

Redwings’ equines rehomed ahead of the pandemic have also thrived this year.

Redwings Cookie, the sole survivor of a group of three mares rescued from a site in Norfolk in 2016, made a full recovery and marked her one-year anniversary in her new home in November.

Her rehomer, Angela, said she has “loved every moment of being Cookie’s guardian.

“She’s been such a joy to work with, from building her trust and confidence, to backing her

and then getting her out and about. Every step of the way has been packed full of rewards,” she added.

World Horse Welfare’s residents and staff have featured in the charity’s annual Christmas message as the teams thank the public for their support during 2020.

The charity’s Teddy Boy, Mrs Potts, Actuality, Waffle, Pumpkin, Opal, Fleur, Ruby, Florence, and Ernie are among those to spread the Christmas spirit.

The charity thanked supporters on behalf of the likes of Kipling, who underwent castration, dental work and veterinary treatment since coming into the charity’s care.

“Your support and donations have seen him transform from an underweight stallion to a really lovely friendly gelding who has a new home to go to this Christmas,” said the team member.

Another team member added that thanks to supporters, the charity has been able to rehabilitate horses from “all walks of life” including ex-racehorse Actuality.

World Horse Welfare chief executive Roly Owers concluded the message, stating that the team “couldn’t have put it better”.

Special ponies desperate for loving homes after months in charity’s care

Welfare charity the Blue Cross is seeking forever homes for four horses who have already spent more than a year in their care.

The organisation’s Rolleston centre in Staffordshire said it was “desperate” to find new families for the horses, who could offer them the “love and care they deserve”.

Three of the horses are only suitable as companions while one pony, three-year-old piebald cob Gus, could go on to have a ridden or driven career.

Gus, who is 12.2hh, came to Rolleston via the RSPCA in August 2019 and is looking for a home where he can be left to mature until he is at least four years old, when he can then be backed. Gus is able to live out 24/7 with shelter and company.

Fozzie, a 16-year-old bay native gelding, is looking for a companion home where he needs to live out 24/7 as he finds being stabled stressful. He was taken in by the RSPCA in 2017 and spent time in a private home before being returned to the Rolleston in 2019.

Also looking for companion homes are Karate, a 15.3hh, 11- year-old warmblood mare who has been with the Blue Cross since October 2019 and Selwyn, a nine-year-old 12.2hh chestnut gelding.

Selwyn had been kept alone in stables for most of his life and was quite nervous when he arrived. He is not used to being round other horses and the team have been working hard to socialise him and help him gain confidence. Although he is improving daily, he will need understanding owners who can help him settle into a new home.

Verity Anderton-Johnson, Horse Rehoming Coordinator at Blue Cross in Rolleston said: “These are all very special ponies who really deserve to find a home of their own and make new horse pals. Most horses prefer to be part of a group or have some company and we hope to find these four ponies homes where they will have all the love and care they deserve.”

Abandoned mare ‘left for dead’ six years ago finds happy home

The rehomer of a mare who had spent most of her life in a rescue centre said finding each other feels like “fate”.

In 2014 part-bred thoroughbred Hope was abandoned and “left for dead” at six months old, with a body score of one out of five. Having been nursed back to health by the RSPCA, the mare remained in the charity’s six years later, and an appeal was launched to find her a home. In October 2019 she was spotted online by West Yorkshire-based Lauren Barker.

Lauren, 31, who is studying towards becoming a veterinary nurse, told H&H she knew Hope was “the one” when she saw her on the RSPCA’s website.

“I’d really missed being around horses and when I stumbled across Hope it was love at first sight,” she said.

“Just her picture had me, but then when I read her profile and what she’d been through I filled up.”

Lauren, who suffers with epilepsy, said she had reservations at first as she was not working at the time.

“I wondered what my family might think because at the time; because of my medical conditions I was struggling to find work. I kept thinking “Is it realistic to get a horse just now?” but I couldn’t stop thinking about her,” she said.

“I told my mum, Gina, who supported my decision and it went from there and I made the enquiries.”

Lauren started the adoption process at the end of 2019, but owing to the pandemic the process was delayed.

“I kept reading more about Hope online, and saw the Horse & Hound story, and I just couldn’t wait to meet her,” said Lauren.

“In July I made the three and a half-hour journey to the RSPCA Southridge centre and met her for the first time. She was in a stable on the yard, when she popped her head out my heart melted. She had had a vet check and the farrier that morning so at first she seemed a bit unsure about me but then she warmed to me and put her head on my shoulder.”

Lauren visited Hope for a second time in August, and on 12 September the mare joined Lauren in West Yorkshire.

“I couldn’t sleep the night before and the day of her arrival it felt like Christmas morning,” said Lauren.

“I was so surprised at how quickly she settled. She is in the field with some friends’ horses and she’s just besotted with them. During the first week when someone said ‘your horse’ it felt so surreal thinking ‘I’ve got a horse!’ but now it feels like we’ve been together for ever.”

Lauren said finding Hope feels like “fate”.

“One of the triggers of my epilepsy can be stress but having Hope helps with my anxiety,” said Lauren.

“If any horse deserved a second chance it was Hope after what she went through. I think she realises she’s in her for-ever home, it’s so rewarding rehoming a horse – but I’m most grateful to Hope for how she’s made me feel.”

Anna White, RSPCA Southridge centre manager, said the charity “could not be happier” that Hope has found her home with Lauren.

“She is one of the most special rescue horses we have ever known and she really deserves this wonderful, happy ending. Over the years we have looked after her, all the staff have come to love her and bond with her and although it’s sad to see her leave our yard, we always held out ‘hope’ that her ideal home would come along. We will miss her terribly, but we are over the moon that she’s finally starting her new life,” she said.

Donkey ‘finishing school’ students make great strides towards new lives

The first students in the first “finishing school” for donkeys are making “great strides” towards their new lives.

While finishing schools for young ladies may teach deportment and social graces, the Donkey Sanctuary’s new unit is similar in that it aims to provide education that will benefit its students for life.

The aim is to prepare donkeys for new lives with guardians, who are supported by the charity’s welfare advisors.

Unit supervisor Kerry Layton-Hill said: “It’s a bit of a finishing school for donkeys; we will expose them to things that they would find in their new homes and can tailor the training to a home’s needs too. We help the donkeys grow in confidence.”

The “school” comprises three shelters, each housing 12 donkeys. Through specialist training and exposure to new experiences, donkeys can be “primed for graduation into their new guardian homes”.

A sanctuary spokesman said: “Most donkeys would be suitable for rehoming at some point, though they have to pass a certain set of criteria to make the grade. Grooms look at the fitness, health, behaviour and experience of donkeys to ascertain whether they are ready for a home.

“Donkeys at the unit are exposed to new experiences, from walking on tracks alongside noisy roads to meeting someone carrying an umbrella – seemingly trivial, yet potentially unnerving things they won’t have come across during life at the sanctuary.”

Ms Layton-Hill added. “It’s brilliant to see the donkeys make such great progress, from being a little nervous to gaining confidence before going out to their new homes – it’s just amazing.”

Appeal launched to find home for mare found ‘hours from death’ six years ago

An appeal has been launched to find a home for a rescue mare who was found alone and “left for dead” six years ago.

Hope, who is 14hh and thought to be a part-bred thoroughbred, has been in the care of the RSPCA for most of her life after she was found abandoned at six months old, collapsed and too weak to stand, in March 2014.

A spokesman for the charity said vets gave Hope a body score of one out of five, the “worst possible condition”.

“Poor Hope was just hours from death and her mother was nowhere to be seen – she was emaciated, dehydrated, covered in lice, full of worms and with dried diarrhoea covering her hind legs,” said the spokesman.

“After being taken to a specialist veterinary hospital Hope was given urgent treatment and slowly started to make a recovery although for several days vets were concerned that her prognosis was not good.”

Hope became strong enough to leave the hospital and was taken to an RSPCA boarding yard before being moved to the charity’s Southridge animal centre in Potters Bar in May 2014.

A spokesman for the charity said staff are “puzzled” as to why Hope has not yet been adopted – despite the fact she has featured on the charity’s “find a pet” website for almost two years.

RSPCA Southridge animal centre manager Anna White said: “When Hope arrived at our centre, she still had a way to go to put on more condition and weight, but she was doing well and we felt sure she would be snapped up quickly by someone. Sadly for her, almost five years later she is still here waiting.

“During her time here Hope has become a firm favourite with our staff and our visitors, and right from the start when she was just a tiny, scruffy little youngster, she formed a really strong bond with a chubby little rescue pony named Francie. There’s no doubt it’s down to Francie that Hope came out of her shell.

“She took her under her wing, showed her there was nothing to be fearful of and helped Hope become the wonderful horse she is. At around 40 years old Francie became a mother to Hope, it was a wonderful sight to see Hope skipping around Francie in our paddocks.”

Ms White said Hope has had a few health issues, which she has overcome, and she is not a “sickly” horse, but has been unlucky.

“Our lovely girl Hope isn’t going to be a big-time show pony, but she is the friendliest, most grateful horse we’ve known with a unique character and zest for life. If you’re looking for a project horse you can bond with, teach new things and really enjoy watching flourish, Hope really is the girl for you,” she said.

“She’ll give you back tenfold what you put in so we really would love to hear from anyone who thinks they can offer Hope her forever home. We love her here but she really deserves her chance to be loved by someone special, and not live her whole life in a rescue centre.”

Staff at the charity believe Hope developed “ballerina syndrome”, also known as contracted tendons. It is thought she developed the condition, which has been carefully treated with remedial shoeing, from a poor diet at the beginning of her life. The staff say no one would know it had ever affected her, but that if being ridden is not possible, she has “so much to offer” as a companion.

Lexie

Rescued by the Mare and Foal Sanctuary, Lexie was just four-months-old when she was hit by a car on Dartmoor and abandoned by her mum, which left her terrified of moving vehicles. Fortunately, her rehomer Mandy Hayley saw that the biggest challenges brought the best rewards.

Mandy explained: “I just knew she was misunderstood. You could see the kindness in her eyes. She just demanded respect and I suspected she would show it in return.

“It took years before Lexie could let a car pass without her shaking with fear, but with time and patience we got there in the end.

“Lexie has taught my three grandchildren to ride, it has been a wonderful experience for them.”

Redwings rescue Molly, a Thoroughbred cross, was rehomed to her guardian Jess. Together, the pair have gone from strength to strength, competing in novice level team chasing (not for the faint-hearted!), dressage and showjumping as well as representing Redwings in rescue classes at Equifest last year.

Zeus arrived at Bransby Horses with a severe lice infestation and was still entire, but his loving nature shone through and he became a firm favourite with staff and his rehomer Ellen.

Ellen said: “When I first read Stanley’s story on the Bransby Horses’ website, I instantly fell in love with him. He was looking for a relaxed retirement home and I already had Oscar, an old Shetland, who was looking for a friend.

“Stanley came to live with us in 2015 and they instantly got on very well. Oscar seemed to know that we needed to look after Stanley. They were inseparable — they enjoyed going for walks, talking to everybody that came to the yard, and more importantly eating!”

Louie

Rehomed from the RSPCA, Louie instantly caught rehomer Tommy’s eye: “It sounds crazy but I was just so sure about him, I phoned straight away and spoke to a rehoming officer, arranged to meet Louie, and that was that!

“Before I knew it he was home, and all those expensive event horses I had tried out before were out of my mind forever.”

Tommy started Louie’s in-hand training, taking him out showing and teaching him to work on the lunge.

Tommy said: “As Louie gets a little older and more confident, I will look to start backing him, and my hope is that he’ll blossom into an amazing little riding pony for my niece. I can’t wait to see what the future brings for us both!”

Lucas was discovered at just 10-months-old in a freezing field with his emaciated mother and rescued by World Horse Welfare. Fortunately, he thrived in the charity’s care and was ready for rehoming as a two-year-old, which is when he met rehomer Colleen.

She said: “To be honest, it was love at first sight! I was searching for a horse that would be a general all-rounder and happy to compete across various disciplines. I wanted a youngster who seemed bright, curious and willing to learn.”

Colleen started his education under saddle and from there they went from strength to strength.

“Lucas and I take part in everything; hes been very successful in the working hunter ring, always jumping fabulous clear rounds. We’ve made our British Eventing debut with two BE80 runs and last year he participated in his first ever TREC competition where he went on to win his section at the Scottish Championships.”

I couldn’t write this article without mentioning my very own rescue, Billy. A Quarter Horse who we rescued from slaughter while living in France, and he made the journey to the UK with us when we relocated. Now almost 22-years-old, he is still my horse of a lifetime.

Despite being unbroken when he first came home and me being a small child, he became a fantastic all-rounder, taking me to the Trailblazer finals, winning school showjumping leagues and patiently tolerating many a fancy-dress costume over the years.

Pony dumped in shocked grandmother’s back garden seeks new home

A pony who was dumped in a paved back garden is ready for rehoming after a stint at World Horse Welfare’s rescue and rehoming centre.

Mr Melvin Andrews was left in the back yard of a lady’s home in April.

It transpired that her 13-year-old granddaughter had responded to a post on a free ads site that said the pony’s owner would have the animal put down if nobody could take him in.

The RSPCA were called and the charity asked World Horse Welfare to attend as it was closer.

The 10hh yearling has been cared for at World Horse Welfare’s Penny Farm for the last six months and is now looking for a new home.

Mr Melvin Andrews’ groom Katie Grimshaw said he is an “absolutely lovely” pony.

“He is happy living out in the field and rolling in the mud at any opportunity,” she said.

“He is very inquisitive, popular with visitors and always comes over for attention when we do our daily field checks.

“He really enjoys having a groom and particularly likes to root through the contents of the grooming box if he has the opportunity.”

The charity is looking for an experienced rehomer to take him on and to give him plenty of handling.

“We’ve been doing basic handling and leading work with him which he’s taken well to and although he is unlikely to grow enough to be a ridden pony, I’m sure he would love a home with someone who wanted to do some in hand work/agility type stuff to keep him occupied,” added Ms Grimshaw.

‘My best friend’: honour for pony who saved owner’s life

A rehomed pony who rescued her owner has been awarded two prizes in World Horse Welfare’s annual competition.

Hampshire rehomer Barbara McMurray first saw rescue pony Sophie on Channel 4’s Pet Rescue in 1998 and the pair have been inseparable ever since.

Sophie has become a central part of Barbara’s family and they enjoy driving together — the pony even helped rescue Barbara after a nasty accident several years ago.

“When I rehomed Sophie, it was at a time when my children had grown up and I thought, ‘now it’s my turn to have a pony’,” said Barbara.

“My father used to drive horses and I had always wanted to give it a go as my riding days were gone so this was the ideal opportunity.”

Her friend broke Sophie to harness and the pony “took to it beautifully”.

“Sophie has taught so many in riding and driving from tots to teens,” added Barbara.

“My grandchildren have all learnt to ride thanks to Sophie and have been there, done it and got the t-shirt in all Pony Club activities from games to fancy dress.”

Barbara and her late husband would often drive out together — Barbara and Sophie would drop him off at the pub, then go for a long drive and collect him on the way home.

“One day, Sophie and I had a bad accident whilst out driving which left me stranded with a badly damaged knee and unable to call for help,” said Barbara.

“Sophie trotted off back the way we’d come, carefully crossed the main road and went to stand outside the pub where she knew we’d left my husband earlier in the day to alert him that something was wrong.

“For some time after she was very nervous but knew she needed to take care of me and we rebuilt our confidence together.”

Barbara’s husband died in 2012 and it was Sophie who helped her through.

“We talked a lot and had lots of hugs,” she said.

“Having to get up and out each day caring for Sophie and my rescue dog kept me active and gave me a purpose and reason to keep going.

“I’m now 72 and Sophie has been so good as we’ve grown old together.

“We still go out for drives although climbing onto the trap takes me a bit of time but Sophie always looks round to check I’m on and ready before she sets off.

“Sophie has been my best friend and soul mate, giving me a reason to get on with life no matter what it throws at us.”

‘I beep my horn and he trots to meet me’: rehomed pony brings joy to family

A pony rescued from miserable conditions has settled into his new family home.

Trigger was one of a group of ponies found living in a heavily waterlogged field with nothing to eat.

All the ponies were tired, weak, with overgrown feet and in serious need of care.

One of the ponies was in such poor condition that he had to be put down.

Their owner could not be found, so the RSPCA signed them over to World Horse Welfare in February 2016.

Trigger was castrated and staff at World Horse Welfare’s Penny Farm broke him to harness.

Carol Padgett rehomed the 12.1hh coloured pony in January 2017 and said it was “love at first sight”.

Trigger was advertised as a driving pony, but the family decided to try backing him to see if he would take to ridden work.

“He has taken part in our local riding school dressage series ridden by my friend’s 14-year-old daughter,” added Carol.

“Trigger is ridden every weekend by my 10- and six-year-old grandchildren — they are both novice and he looks after then very well [in the arena] and when we hack out to visit local friends.

“Trigger is loving, easy to handle, and he follows me around when I’m working on the land nuzzling my back, he is quite affectionate.

“When I come home from work, as I drive up the lane, I beep my horn and Trigger trots into the yard to meet me — what could be better than that!”

Carol found the 12-year-old pony after she lost her horse of 23 years in November 2016.

“I had always wanted to rehome so decide to look at the World Horse Welfare website and found Trigger,” she said, adding that his trust in her is “evident”.

“He has now settled and is in a good routine — he has a stable mate, Meggy Moo, a nine-year-old Welsh mare who I also own, and they are developing a good relationship.

“In the beginning he was a little cautious and shy, but this soon disappeared once he became familiar with us.”

Looking for a new project? Charity to rehome unbacked horses for the first time

A charity is seeking experienced riders to take on unbacked project horses in a first for the charity.

Noah, a three-year-old 13.2hh cob cross (pictured, below), and Roxanne, a 14.2hh two-year-old cob, have been chosen to launch the initiative.

The charity is seeking potential rehomers who have experience of backing or bringing on inexperienced horses or ponies.

All equines in the scheme will be brought to the stage where they can be caught and led, and will also be taught to stand while they are groomed and have their feet picked out.

“We have the potential to rehome over 500 horses currently living in the sanctuary who have been identified as future potential candidates as unbacked project horses,” said Rachel Angell, Redwings’ operations and rehoming manager.

“With the upcoming expansion of the Redwings guardianship scheme to include a rehoming centre at Redwings Oxhill in Warwickshire, we feel the time is right to begin to rehome our project horses.

“Even with this expansion, we only have the resources to be able to train a certain number of horses ourselves, but by rehoming unbacked project horses we will be able to give so many more the chance to live a fulfilling life outside the sanctuary.”

Noah was born at Redwings after his mother was rescued with hundreds of other horses in south Wales.

She was found stranded in deep mud and was suffering from malnutrition and worm damage.

Both ponies have shown “a love of human interaction” and are progressing well in their basic training.

“This is of huge importance to us as a charity as it will enable us to create more space to rescue those horses who desperately need our help,” added Ms Angell.

“So by rehoming an unbacked project horse, guardians will get the rewarding experience of not only bringing on a horse of their own, but also knowing they have helped give rescued horses like Noah and Roxanne the loving home they deserve and allowed us to continue our vital frontline welfare work.”

Pippa Funnell: ‘I would advise anyone thinking of buying a horse to phone World Horse Welfare first’

Eventer and World Horse Welfare patron Pippa Funnell paid a visit to the charity’s Glenda Spooner Farm in Somerset to assess the potential of some of the horses and ponies that are almost ready for rehoming.

“It’s been a huge honour to be involved with such a well-respected charity,” says Pippa.

“I’ve seen their incredible attention to detail, great care and the emotional connection the team show towards all the horses. It’s been really touching. I would advise anyone thinking of buying a horse or pony to phone World Horse Welfare first and see what they have available.”

The background story

Lucy was part of a consignment of 26 horses rescued in 2015. She was unhandled and arrived with severely cracked feet, lice and a worm burden and was mildly lame behind. Groom Nicole O’Malley has given Lucy physiotherapy and the mare has received remedial foot trimming. She is currently being long-reined over poles and backed.

The assessment

“Lucy has a great temperament; she’s friendly and trusting,” says Pippa, who believes that the mare still has some growing to do.

Glenda Spooner Farm manager Claire Dickie explains that many rescue cases carry on growing long after horses of a similar age and breed have stopped, due to having been neglected and kept short of food.

“She’s a bit overweight,” notes Pippa, who is told Lucy is on restricted grazing. “But for a rehomer, finding a good doer is a handy thing — at least she’ll be cheap to keep.

“She has good bone for her type and sturdy limbs. Her front leg leaves her shoulder in the right place, while she has good length from her hip to her hock and a sturdy back end.”

Pippa can imagine Lucy as a hack. “She has a good walk, and that’s important even for a hack. She also has a good length of stride.”

As the mare trots around on the lunge and becomes more forward, Pippa notes that she looks less stiff behind.

Nicole has been working towards backing the mare and, with Pippa holding the reins, Nicole leans over the saddle for the first time (pictured, above). Lucy remains completely calm.

“You’ve done a good job with her,” Pippa tells Nicole. “I can see that Lucy’s the sort of pony who now has trust in people and with a competent rehomer to finish the job — and keep her on a diet — she’s going to be fabulous.”

Can you give a lonely pony a home this winter?

World Horse Welfare is urgently seeking homes as half of its rehoming centres are already over capacity.

All four of the charity’s rescue and rehoming centres are particularly full, with two of these over capacity.

The charity rehomes around 300 horses and ponies each year and currently has more than 80 equines seeking new homes.

It is highlighting eight ponies who have been particularly unsuccessful in their search for a new home — Bailey, Beau, Bren, Griff, Marge, Quaver, Roxy and Ted.

“Before the winter has even started, two of our four rescue and rehoming centres are over capacity and the other two are very close to their maximum stocking levels too,” said World Horse Welfare’s deputy chief executive Tony Tyler.

“It is difficult to pinpoint any major factors which have led to the large numbers of horses and ponies currently in our care, however with a harsh winter forecast ahead, it is vital that we continue to find homes for as many equines on our rehoming scheme as possible.

“I would urge anyone thinking about getting a new horse or pony to please consider rehoming in the first instance.

“Not only can you find your ideal equine partner with a guarantee of complete honesty and transparency but you will also have the satisfaction of knowing that you are giving that particular horse or pony a second chance at the life and love they deserve.

“In addition, rehoming from World Horse Welfare offers a safety net that should things with your new horse or pony not work out or your circumstances change the equine can be returned to our care at any time.

Number of horses in RSPCA care up 56% in 12 months

The number of horses in RSPCA care has risen by 56% compared to this time last year.

The news comes as the charity launches a sponsorship scheme to help fund stabling for horses it has taken in.

As of 16 August, the RSPCA had 870 equines in its care — including 123 at its centres, 81 with fosterers and 666 in private stabling where the charity pays for their care.

This is a 56% increase on the same date last year, when the charity had 559 equines in its care.

Figures also show that the RSPCA took in 979 horses in total in 2016, which is a 55% increase on the previous year.

Equine inspector team leader Cathy Hyde warned that the situation is not improving.

“For several years now we as a charity have been picking up the pieces of the equine crisis, with our inspectors being called out to sick, injured, neglected or cruelly treated horses every single day,” she said.

“Despite our best efforts, the crisis is not getting any better.”

The RSPCA’s national call centre received more than 30,000 calls about horses last year and the charity is now rescuing an average of almost three horses a day.

“The time and work during those months is absolutely essential but extremely costly, and we now find ourselves with more than 850 horses in our care, so we desperately need the public’s help.”

The charity is warning that the impact of the recession, over-breeding, cost of vets’ bills and falling prices of horses have all contributed to the crisis — and the poor state in which many horses are coming to the charity.

Hard hitting campaigns, work across the globe and rescuing and rehoming horses and ponies on home turf — there are plenty of reasons Horse & Hound is excited to work with World Horse Welfare this year. Here are eight things you need to know about our official charity of 2017...

1. The charity is 90 years old — it was founded in 1927 as a campaigning organisation to prevent the export of live British horses for export. Ada Cole was the charity’s founder and was spurred into action after witnessing a procession of work-worn British horses unloaded at the docks of Antwerp and whipped for four miles to slaughter.

2. In 1949 World Horse Welfare opened its first rescue centre in Britain. Today there are four rescue and rehoming centres across the UK; Belwade Farm in Aberdeenshire, Glenda Spoon Farm in Somerset, Hall Farm in Norfolk and Penny Farm in Lancashire — home to horses like the filly Lola, pictured above.

4. Emergency relief is also offered in countries facing a disaster, and where the charity has a presence — working in collaboration with local governments and NGOs to protect working equines and reduce the impact of these events on whole communities.

5. The Princess Royal is the charity’s president, and Olympic dressage rider Richard Davison is one of its trustees.

6. Over 70% of the charity’s income is spent directly on helping horses.

7. Campaigns are at the heart of the charity’s work — whether it’s to make CCTV mandatory in the UK’s equine slaughterhouses or against contagious disease. Since it was founded in 1927, World Horse Welfare has helped influence over 50 pieces of legislation.

Horse found ‘almost too weak to stand’ named supreme champion

A rescue horse who was found “almost too weak to stand” has been named supreme champion by a welfare charity.

Cappuccino was one of more than 100 horses found near Exeter in 2010 struggling to survive on very little food and water.

A vet examined all the horses and Cappuccino, aged three at the time, was taken to World Horse Welfare’s Glenda Spooner Farm rescue and rehoming centre.

He was rehomed two years ago by a family from Peebles in the Scottish Borders and has now been named World Horse Welfare’s Rehomed Horse of the Year 2016.

“Cappy was quite early in his education when we took him on but he has progressed amazingly well since we got him and only ever seeks to do his best for us,” said Susan Ridley.

“At the same time as learning himself, he has taught both of my children, Ruth aged 13 and Ruby aged nine, to ride.

“He loves the attention they give him and has always been absolutely faultless with both of them, never putting a foot wrong and taking care of them.

“Ruth has grown in confidence to ride him unaided and has even begun jumping him now whilst Ruby, who looks like a pea on a mountain on him, rides unaided with me walking alongside.”

The family also rehomed another pony — Windscott Wendy — from World Horse Welfare at the same time.

“[Cappy] is such a character and we love watching him play with his field mate, Wendy,” added Susan. “He is a real treasure.”

The competition is part of the charity’s Rehome a Horse Month, supported by Dodson & Horrell, which highlights equines looking for homes and celebrates those who have been successfully rehomed.

Ruby, who wrote part of Cappy’s winning entry, said he is a “true gentleman”.

“After his horrific past, he is still a strong and incredibly gifted horse in every way,” she said.

“He loves cantering and bucking in the field when he is very happy and loves to play tug of war with Wendy using tree branches.

“We have a very bright future for Cappy and we’re so lucky to have him.”

‘Quick thinking’ rescuer reunited with ponies she saved

A caring member of the public has been reunited with two ponies that she rescued from a road.

Nellie and Napoleon were found by a farmer, abandoned and wandering on a road near Rotheram late one evening last March.

He contacted Rachel Edgerton for help and with the help of a policeman, they herded the horses into a nearby field where they would be safe overnight.

The next morning, Rachel came down to check the ponies and was shocked to see how emaciated they were.

She contacted World Horse Welfare and a field officer came out to assess the ponies.

“The ponies were clearly in a vulnerable situation, suffering from severe diarrhoea. Nellie was showing signs of colic and both desperately needed treatment for their worms and lice infestations,” said Chris Shaw of World Horse Welfare.

As no owner could be found, it was decided that the ponies should be brought to the charity’s rescue centre near Blackpool.

No horseboxes were available from the farm, so Rachel booked and paid for a horse transporter to take Nellie and Napoleon to the centre.

“Rachel’s actions were not only quick thinking and compassionate, but she absolutely went above and beyond to keep the ponies safe and give them the best possible chance of recovery,” Mr Shaw added.

“Her generosity and dedication are exceptional and I know I speak for everyone at World Horse Welfare when I say we are immensely grateful for her support.”

Six months later, Rachel was invited to see how the equines were recovering and a video of her visit was published on YouTube on 20 November.

“They look brilliant! Absolutely brilliant, I can’t believe the transformation,” said Rachel.

“They were in such a terrible condition, emaciated and infested with worms and lice and now they look amazing.

“I’m over the moon to have this opportunity to see the ponies again and so impressed with the amazing results the team at Penny Farm have achieved.”

Nellie and Napoleon have both now been rehomed as companions.

Ponies Brussel and Santa spring back to life after terrible start

Two ponies found close to death’s door have been given a new start in life.

Two-year-old piebald colt Brussel was found collapsed in a field just after Christmas in 2013.

He was cared for in equine hospital for two weeks (pictured, right) before spending some time at a private boarding establishment for further recuperation. He then moved to the RSPCA’s Felledge Equine Centre in Co. Durham at the end of April this year.

13hh dark bay colt Santa was found emaciated and alone in a field in Seaham, Co. Durham last December (pictured, right).

“He had been left alone to stray, but when I managed to find him on that very cold, very dark evening, he was in an allotment,” said inspector Helen Nedley.

“He was so thin that his hips, ribs and spine could easily be seen, and he had no access to grazing, food or water.”

The now three-year-old was taken into RSPCA care at Felledge and over the next few weeks he began to put on weight.

“Fortunately once police seized him, his owner signed him over to our care. He was so good to handle, such a quiet pony,” added Ms Nedley.

Both ponies are now ready to be rehomed.

“Brussel is good with other horses in the field, and he really loves to be handled,” said Felledge yard manager Lisa Paulin.

“We think he will grow to about 14hh and he is looking for an experienced home with someone who has the knowledge to bring him on into work when he is old enough. He could be fostered or adopted at this stage; we would just like to see him in a loving home as soon as possible.”

Santa is also hoped to make a riding pony in the future.

“We have just started bringing him into work with some in-hand exercise, and he’s been such a good boy, it looks like he’s going to be very straightforward to bring on,” added Ms Paulin.

Equine charity ‘delighted’ owners are rehoming more horses

A record-breaking number of horses have found a new home in the past two months, according to equine charity World Horse Welfare.

The organisations’ “rehome a horse month” in September helped 44 horses find somewhere new to live. In October a further 41 were rehomed — doubling the average number of around 23 rehomed each month throughout the rest of 2015.

The charity has recently launched a new website to help make the process easier. It currently has 1,700 horses out at homes around the UK.

“We are absolutely delighted to see the huge boost in the number of horses rehomed over the past two months, and would like to thank everyone who has supported us in reaching these figures,” said World Horse Welfare’s Tony Tyler.

“We’re always adding new horses and ponies to our scheme and we’ve worked hard to promote the variety and quality of our horses, as well as the advantages of rehoming over buying or breeding.

“While it is very positive to see this boost, we still need to keep this momentum going, particularly as we’ve now entered the winter when we desperately need the space in our four rescue and rehoming centres to take in more horses in need of our help.”

Case study

Spike arrived at World Horse Welfare in July 2011 as an emaciated yearling.

He was rehomed with Patricia Pomp in Suffolk in 2013.

Spike has been in work properly for around three months and has started competing in local dressage competitions and he recently won his first prelim.

“I would not hesitate in recommending rehoming to other horse owners as the charity has so many lovely horses just waiting for kind owners,” said Pat.

‘Miracle’ foal born to neglected veteran mare VIDEO

A veteran mare found emaciated and close to death has surprised her new owner by giving birth to a foal.

Connie, believed to be in her mid-20s, was rescued by the RSPCA in December in a poor state of neglect (pictured right) with a foal at foot.

The 16hh flea-bitten grey mare and her foal were rehomed separately and RSPCA animal collection officer Kate Wright took on Connie.

She had been gradually putting on weight for six months in her new home when out of the blue she began to show signs of being in foal.

The following day (16 July) she gave birth to a skewbald filly, Miracle (“Miri”).

“I thought there could be no way she could be in foal — she had a blood test carried out by a vet when she was first rescued and it came back negative,” said Bedforshire-based Kate.

“But when she started lactating six months after being rescued, and the vet came out to examine her, he confirmed he could in fact feel two little hooves!”

Kate originally thought Connie would struggle to survive another winter, but her condition has improved to the extent that she can be ridden.

“I enjoyed every minute of nursing her back to health and never intended to ride her, but she responded so well in the first few months, I tried her with a saddle and amazingly we recently started hacking,” Kate said.

“Now with the arrival of Miracle, she’s proved she is a wonder horse.”

The 14-year-old had to be gelded, and the charity then started the education that would allow him to find his new home.

The team spent almost a year building Barley’s confidence and the pony started to thrive.

“Barley was initially highly aroused and stressed by other horses, he would spend hours pacing the fence line just to be able to see and hear other horses,” said Blue Cross horse rehoming coordinator Lauren Bush.

“He was reluctant to work with us at the start and he wasn’t opposed to trialling aggressive behaviour, understandably as he didn’t seem to be that well handled.

“Initially we thought Barley may be too tricky to rehome, being a stallion for much of his life.”

But, she said, once Barley was settled, he thrived in a quiet environment with a competent and sympathetic handler.

“He was slowly introduced to other geldings one at a time, before slowly settling in with two youngsters before heading off to his new home,” she said.

Barley has joined borrower Holly Gill and in doing so, has provided a lifeline to his new fieldmate, who had recently lost his lifelong companion.

Holly started looking for a companion for 28-year-old Buzz when she had to had her elderly pony Cassie put down.

“Cassie was also 28 when we had to say goodbye – we had her for 20 years too so it was a devastating time for us and for Buzz,” said Holly.

“I’ve owned Buzz for 20 years so he is very special to me. He is a very friendly chap but can be a little apprehensive about change whether that’s a new water bucket or a new friend!

“We have taken it really slowly with Barley and Buzz, once they were happy over a fence we put them in the field together.

“I’ve noticed them spending more time standing close to each other and grooming, which is lovely to see.”

She added that it has been rewarding to work with Barley and gain his trust.

“The first time he let me catch him, or let me put a fly mask on it felt like we had really achieved something,” added Holly.

“He is still very wary and it’s going to take a lot of time and patience for him to fully trust us, but I’m so glad we’ve given him a chance.”

By December Redwings had taken in 104 equines this year, and rehomed 101.

“While this was less than our record 147 homes found in 2022, this is still a vital way that Redwings can continue to manage our capacity, so we are able to continue our life-saving front-line welfare work,” said Ms Cutress.

“This year we rehomed 82 horses, which is a drop of more than 50% on last year, which is a trend across the rehoming sector as the cost of living takes its toll,” RSPCA equine specialist Mark Kennedy told H&H.

Bransby Horses took in 119 equines, compared to 150 last year. The charity rehomed 83 in 2023 and 109 in 2022.

“This winter has hit the equine community hard, so we are expecting an increase in calls for support and welfare concerns as we head into 2024.”

“In August 2015 Audrey underwent a procedure under general anaesthetic to strip back her hoof tissue even further, and her stay as an in-patient in the horse hospital began,” said the spokesman.

“Six months later, the vets had to remove more abnormal tissue and sadly in 2016, with treatment options exhausted, the veterinary team considered whether Audrey would ever fully recover, or if she may need to be put down due to the impact it was having on her quality of life.”

Redwings vet Sarah Prior, who cared for Audrey, said canker is a “very frustrating disease” as some cases fail to respond to surgical or medical treatment.

“As she seemed so content, we decided to keep monitoring her and that’s what we continued to do for the next few years.”

In 2020 Audrey’s canker improved enough that she was discharged from the hospital to join one of the charity’s herds, with the vets continuing to monitor her and bring her into a woodchip paddock or stable in wet weather.

Then in 2023 the Redwings rehoming team had a request from Lucy White to rehome a non-ridden companion.

Audrey is now “happily settled in” and will be spending her first Christmas with her new guardian family.

“Audrey has been a great addition to our family and does an important job of keeping Fleur company. When I take Fleur out for a ride, Audrey gets a special upgrade and goes into our garden, and because of this has built an extra special relationship with my Alaskan malamute Elsie,” said Lucy.

“She has been brilliant to do all the treatment to her feet, and I think it is a real testament to all the staff at Redwings for making her association with humans so positive despite everything she went through. We feel really lucky to have her, and she is worth her weight in gold.”

Redwings chief executive Lynn Cuttress added that the charity “prides itself on its dedication to sanctuary care”.

“Audrey’s case is an exceptional example of the lengths our teams will go to for the rescued equines in our care,” she said.

“When Audrey was eventually discharged from our horse hospital we were all delighted that their dedication had paid off, and what more could we have wished for for Christmas than to see her so settled in a guardian home so perfectly matched to her needs.”

Gareth Wyn Jones, secretary of the Carneddau Mountain Pony Society, said finding homes for the ponies is hard, as the “unique breed is widely misunderstood and thought to offer little opportunity to horse lovers”.

The “outspoken hill farmer” is to showcase the versatility of the breed at the GWCT Welsh Game Fair, at Vaynol Estate in Gwynedd on 9 and 10 September.

“Finding homes for all the ponies that need to be rehomed is a huge undertaking,” he said.

“Many prospective homes wrongly assume the Carneddau mountain ponies will arrive bucking, rearing and being totally unmanageable – like a wild mustang in a cowboy movie.

“Understandably people do not like the idea of taking on an undomesticated animal but these clever ponies can adapt to their new, repurposed lives in just a few days [in experienced hands]. Those that have been adopted go on to enjoy riding, driving and showing.”

All the ponies are rounded up over three weekends in November for an annual health check. Seven families of hill farmers have the right to graze ponies on the 13,500 acres of Snowdonia, and the gathering of ponies attracts visitors from across the world.

The Carneddau Mountain Pony Society will give a demo in the main arena at the Welsh Game Fair to “show visitors how versatile and easy-going the diminutive ponies are”.

The RSPCA took in 365 horses by December, and a charity spokesman told H&H the RSPCA is “extremely concerned” about the impact of the ongoing crisis on owners’ finance, and consequently their equines.

“A worrying trend we saw at the end of summer is that the condition of some equines entering our care was very poor – often around 0.5 body condition score,” he said, adding that this was a “huge red flag”.

“There are other signs of the crisis starting to impact equines, with charities which accept them from the general public reporting more approaches from owners regarding potential surrender of their horses or asking for advice about care costs.”

The RSPCA rehomed 186 equines last year, which left the charity in a “better position at the beginning of winter than it might have been”, but the spokesman said capacity issues at RSPCA centres mean it is continuing to seek horse fosterers to help look after the equines in its care.
