Farrier Tom Broadbridge has overseen the care of numerous barefoot horses – here’s what he has learned

Considering transitioning your horse to barefoot, but not sure how to go about it? Spend any amount of time on social media and you’ll soon find that barefoot trimming and everything surrounding it is a hot topic.

“To my mind, enabling the horse to go barefoot is the gold standard,” says Tom Broadbridge, who qualified as a farrier in 2003 and is now purely a barefoot hoofcare professional.

“There are times when a horse can’t immediately go completely barefoot. Sometimes horses that look sound with shoes on may not be free from inflammation. Consequently, their unsoundness may be more obvious when the shoes are removed.

“If a horse is not sound, they may need another form of hoof protection after removing the shoes, such as hoof boots. In such cases, immediately going completely barefoot may not be best.”

Tom advises against making the transition alone.

“Firstly, ensure you’ve built a strong team of equine professionals around you. Communication with them is key.

“Speak to your vet and your hoof care professional for their advice rather than plunging straight into taking the shoes off.”

Why transition a horse to barefoot?

Keeping horses naturally is a significant motivator in the transition from shod to barefoot. There are several other reasons owners make the change too, including:

1. Cost

With the cost-of-living crisis applying increasing financial pressures – and leaving some owners unable to make ends meet – the thought of ditching a large six-weekly bill appeals to many. However, Tom advises proceeding with caution.

“If finances are your only motivation, I’d advise you to think again,” he says. “Barefoot is not necessarily the easy or cheap option. Keeping a barefoot horse requires a holistic approach, and you may find mounting costs with equine professionals in other areas of your horse’s management to address soundness without shoes, as they may mask lameness.”

2. Performance

“A horse often gains a more natural movement without the restriction of steel shoes,” explains Tom. “Watch the horses in the dressage arena that are barefoot.”

3. Retirement or semi-retirement

Many owners reassess their horses’ lifestyle when they reduce or remove their ridden routine. As well as removing shoes, many opt for 24/7 turnout or retirement livery, too.

4. Eliminates shoe pulling

If you have a horse that regularly pulls shoes, this leads to frequent call-outs mid-shoeing cycle and risks damage to the hoof.

5. A last resort

“I specialised in remedial farriery years ago and thought it was the key to everything,” explains Tom. “Then, you’d have cases where you’d throw every specialised shoe and technique you knew to fix a lame horse, but nothing would work.

“One client sent their horse to a barefoot rehab yard, and the horse came sound. It was one of the most exciting moments of my career. In fact, it was the beginning of my transition to barefoot.”

How to transition a horse to barefoot

Consulting your hoofcare professional alongside your vet and an independent nutritionist is the best way to set your horse up for a successful barefoot life.

That said, there’s much you can do in the months ahead to ease the transition.

Feeding

Ideally consulting with an independent nutritionist, Tom recommends reviewing and reducing the amount of sugar in your horse’s diet, from bucket to haynet.

“Sugar is a focus point because it is so influential in terms of inflammation,” says Tom. “But an independent nutritionist can help you review the micronutrients your horse is receiving for overall health and ensure they are optimally fed, too.”

Workload

“If I decided to take off my trainers and immediately go for a 20-mile walk, my feet would be in a sorry state,” says Tom. “It can be the same with newly-barefoot horses.”

While some individuals adapt quickly to work on hard or stony surfaces, others need time to adjust. Tom advises looking over your horse’s workload, scaling back for a period, then building up to your usual routine.

“Groundwork can be a great place to start,” adds Tom.

“If you’ve ever walked on uneven tarmac with no shoes, you’ll know how unpleasant it can feel and the effect on your gait.

“Now carry a saddle and a person. You’ve made an uncomfortable task even more difficult.”

All at once?

If a horse is shod all round, some owners choose to remove the back shoes first.

“The front feet carry about two-thirds of a horse’s weight,” says Tom. “Some owners like to remove the hind shoes first to allow the horse to adjust how he loads and potentially ease the transition.”

However, others may argue that there is a height differential between the shod and barefoot hooves, and that can cause unintended issues.

How to support a horse while transitioning to barefoot

Tom says it’s perfectly normal for newly barefoot horses to feel sensitive on stony ground.

“Anyone who was used to wearing shoes would be,” he says.

“However, if a barefoot horse appears lame on any surface, it is a cause for concern and action needs to be taken.”

Always gain advice from a qualified equine professional.

If you regularly walk your horse on a hard, uneven track – for example, to reach his paddock – hoof boots are a useful tool.

Tom, who designs and produces his own range of hoof boots, says it helps avoid the cumulative effect of contact with sub-optimal ground.

“Newly barefoot horses who walk on stones might develop slight bruising.

“This might be pretty inconsequential as a one-off, but if it’s a daily thing you get bruising forming on top of bruising, and that can become very sore. What’s more, it can cause inflammation and affect the rest of the body due to compensatory issues.

“Using hoof boots for any activity on surfaces, such as stony tracks, can reduce issues, especially in those early stages, by protecting your horse’s soles.

“Gradually introducing different surfaces when the horse is completely barefoot allows them to adjust, and improves hoof health over time.”

Choosing and fitting hoof boots

You can find many different hoof boot styles on the market, including Tom’s own design, Pioneer Sports hoof boots, which are a self-adjusting style to accommodate natural movement and a growing hoof throughout the trim cycle.

Each company has its own fitting and measurement guidelines.

Tom recommends consulting your hoofcare professional on a style and fit to suit your horse when seeking hoof boot advice.

“Some companies, like The Hoof Boutique, will give you advice based on images and measurements you send them or provide a fit kit.”

Dealing with hoof cracks

When transitioning a horse from shod to barefoot, hoof wall cracks or wall degradation are common.

“If your horse has been shod for quite some time, you’ll have a series of nail holes,” Tom explains.

“Here, the horn is weak and will break away.”

Always seek advice from the hoof care professional. Many riders reach for hoof conditioners and moisturisers, but Tom advises it is bacterial or fungal infection within the hoof wall, not dryness, that causes low-level cracking.

“Use an anti-bacterial and anti-fungal product on the hoof horn from about a centimetre below the coronary band,” he suggests. “This permeates the horn and tackles the infection.

“New growth is imbued with the treatment and the cracking should stop. You can actually smell the product when you trim the hoof.”

He adds that the white line can stretch due to flaring, meaning small stones and other debris become lodged within.

“You need a tool sharper and thinner than a hoof pick, such as a bradle, to gently clear it,” advises Tom.

“I’d then use a packing material [like this one] to preserve the white line.”

What’s the best time of year to transition a horse to barefoot?

For Tom, there are pros and cons to a summer versus a winter transition.

“If you transition in the winter, the ground is generally softer, but so are the feet,” he says. “So, the sole is more vulnerable to bruising and potentially more sensitive to stony underfooting.

“In the summer, the feet are generally harder and the sole less flexible, but also the ground is also harder and possibly more uncomfortable underfoot.”

The time of year you choose to transition will depend on what you already know about your horse’s feet. Ultimately, Tom recommends avoiding spring and autumn when the grass flushes and its sugar content intensifies.

“At these points in the year there’s a real boost of energy and sugar in the grass,” Tom explains. “This causes an instant response in the body that might lead to inflammation. It doesn’t need to be as severe as acute laminitis – even a small amount of inflammation in the body can make horses more sensitive.

“My horse has been barefoot for nine years. When the weather changes and the grass shoots up, he’ll feel the odd stone here and there where he wouldn’t have a couple of weeks before.

“And he’s not transitioning – he’s well into barefoot life.”

Ultimately, success will come from strategising ahead of removing your horse’s shoes.

“Start planning your transition while your horse is still shod,” says Tom. “Making dietary adjustments in advance, for example, can help minimise soreness, maintain hoof wall integrity and altogether make the transition far smoother.”

Hoof boots are no longer the niche product for horses they once were. Once mainly thought of as emergency “spare pair of tyres” or therapy boots, they’re now widely used for hacking, rehabilitation and barefoot transitions – and for some horses, they’ve become an everyday part of life.

But they’re also a piece of kit where success depends heavily on understanding what you’re buying and why. Fit matters more than brand, and expectations need to be realistic. Get it right, and the best hoof boots can be transformative; get it wrong, and you can end up with rubbing, twisting, or a particularly expensive cupboard full of boots that almost worked.

Here’s an introduction to hoof boots, how they’re commonly used, and how to choose them wisely, with advice from farrier Tom Broadbridge, who is developing Pioneer Sports Hoof Boots, and hoof boot advisor Liz Hapgood of Hoof Bootique.

What are hoof boots?

Tom describes hoof boots simply as “trainers for horses’ feet”.

They’re removable hoof protection – something you put on when the horse needs it and take off again afterwards, rather than something attached permanently to the hoof. That flexibility is a big part of their appeal.

Why do people use hoof boots?

Liz says many owners first come to hoof boots when they’re struggling with a horse.

“It’s often a last port of call,” she explains – perhaps a horse with intermittent lameness, footiness, or one that hasn’t thrived in traditional shoeing. For others, boots come into play when shoes are removed, and the horse needs protection while adapting.

Common reasons for using hoof boots

• Supporting a horse through a barefoot transition
• Hacking on hard, stony or mixed terrain
• Horses with thin soles or sensitivity
• Rehabilitation cases where pads and cushioning help
• Older horses, who may feel more comfortable with shock absorption

Liz is clear that boots aren’t inherently limiting: “You should be able to do anything in hoof boots that you can do with metal shoes.” But she adds an important note of caution – the more you ask of them, the more critical correct fitting becomes.

Different types of hoof boots

Tom finds it useful to think of riding boots in two broad groups, pictured above.

More forgiving, wrap-style boots

These have a solid base with a more flexible upper. Tom compares them to wellies: they’ll accommodate a wider range of hoof shapes and can be useful when hooves are changing or when pads are needed.

More structured, close-fitting boots

These rely on close contact between the hoof wall and the inside of the boot. “This type needs to fit properly,” Tom says, because it’s the friction between hoof and boot that keeps it secure. He likens them to trainers – less forgiving, but better suited to faster or more demanding work when the fit is right.

Neither type is universally better. The right choice depends on your horse’s hooves now, what you’re doing in them, and how much change you expect over the coming months.

Fitting hoof boots

Both experts return to this repeatedly: fit matters more than anything – and length is the hard bit.

Liz says most people manage hoof width fairly well, but “measuring the length is the hardest thing to get right”. The challenge is measuring the weight-bearing surface accurately without including heel bulbs – and in hooves with underrun or compromised heels, knowing where that measurement should end can be tricky.

Why does it matter? Liz compares it to wearing shoes that are too long: your heel lifts, your foot moves, and your stability changes. In a hoof boot, that can mean twisting, rubbing or boots coming off.

Her advice is simple: if you’re unsure, ask for help. Hoof boots are a specialist product, and getting the length wrong is one of the most common reasons they fail.

When to measure for hoof boots

Liz advises measuring after a fresh trim, or within around two weeks of one. Measuring a long, flared hoof can lead to boots that distort as the hoof grows.

Tom adds that measuring at more than one point – for example, mid-cycle as well as immediately after a trim – can help owners understand the extent of variation and manage their expectations.

Hoof boot size charts

Size charts are a useful starting point, but Tom cautions that length and width alone don’t account for hoof shape.

“You might have the measurements right,” he explains, “but you don’t know how the shape of the hoof compares to the inside shape of the boot.”

Liz expands on this: the widest part of the hoof isn’t always in the same place as the widest part of the boot. Even when measurements match on paper, the hoof may not physically seat correctly inside the shell.

This is why so many nearly-new boots end up for resale.

Hoof boot fit kits and expert advice

Both Tom and Liz strongly recommend using fit kits wherever possible. These allow you to try boot shells on the hoof, helping you see what genuinely fits – not just what looks right on a chart.

Liz’s approach is to narrow options using measurements, then compare different brands and sizes side by side. Her key message will sound familiar to anyone who’s dealt with saddle fitting: choose the boot that fits your horse, not the brand you like.

“Often,” she says, “you end up buying a boot you didn’t think you wanted, because it’s the one that actually suits the hoof.”

If you can’t access fit kits in person, Liz recommends seeking advice rather than guessing. Clear photos and accurate measurements allow experienced advisors to assess factors that numbers alone can’t show – such as heel height, symmetry and hoof angle.

How to check fit at home

Liz’s go-to check is the “twist test”. With the boot fastened, pick the foot up as if you were picking it out and try to twist the boot.

You want the hoof and boot to move together. A small amount of movement can be acceptable, but if the boot twists freely, something isn’t right.

She also highlights a common misconception: twisting doesn’t always mean the boot is too big. Boots can twist when they’re too small, too – for example, if the hoof is too wide for the base and can’t sit properly down into it.

Tom adds another practical check: look at the heel bulbs and hairline when you remove the boots. Before rubbing becomes sore, you’ll often see the hair being dragged or disturbed.

Introducing hoof boots

Even with a good fit, both experts advise building up gradually.

Tom’s advice is straightforward: if you want to trot in boots, walk in them first. Let the horse adapt to the different feel underfoot and monitor how they move.

Liz notes that some horses end up with more than one pair for different jobs – for example, an easy everyday option, something more secure for long hacks, or lighter boots for schooling on hard ground.

How long do hoof boots last?

Liz stresses that lifespan depends on use, terrain and how the horse moves. As a broad guide, six to 12 months is often quoted, but many boots last up to two years or more. Some models also allow worn parts to be replaced, extending their useful life.

Can I use hoof boots in competitions?

Hoof boots are currently not permitted in British Dressage competitions. In British Showjumping, they may not be worn at any time when a horse or pony is mounted or being exercised, including during lunging. They are, however, permitted in stable and grazing areas.

Under British Eventing rules, hoof boots are allowed in exercise and lunging areas but may not be worn during any phase of competition.

At FEI level, hoof boots are only permitted for driving horses; they are not allowed for ridden competition.

Hoof boots are not specifically referenced in the 2026 British Riding Club Handbook rules for dressage, showjumping or eventing, but they are permitted in working-in areas. The Pony Club also generally restricts the use of hoof boots in competitions.

For other sports, and at unaffiliated competitions, rules can vary by discipline and venue; so it’s worth checking the relevant handbook and competition regulations in advance.

The takeaway

Hoof boots can be a genuinely useful tool, but they’re not a one-size-fits-all purchase. Accurate measurement, realistic expectations and careful fitting are what make the difference.

Take the time to understand your horse’s hooves, introduce boots gradually, and keep reassessing fit as things change. Done properly, they can offer flexibility and comfort that suits a wide range of horses and riders.

The best cross-country boots for horses are lightweight, fit well and offer excellent protection against impacts – whether it be from a fence or a strike from another leg. While the best brushing boots are sometimes seen on the cross-country course – usually when a rider does not take their horse cross-country regularly as they offer better protection than nothing – specifically designed cross-country boots offer a higher level of protection, and are often teamed with overreach boots where necessary.

Cross-country boots are an essential part of an eventer’s safety kit – in the same way that we kit ourselves out with the best riding hats and best body protectors, it’s important to offer as much protection as we can to our horses. We’ve rounded up a selection of the best cross-country boots on the market, and we’ve been testing them out, too.

These boots from Equilibrium are independently tested in the same laboratory as hats and body protectors for full confidence that they will protect against the typical knocks and strikes horses may get out on the cross-country course. They are flexible, breathable, and lightweight, as well as easy to wash. They also come with a one-year guarantee.

Sophie Cheeseman put these boots to the test and found that they didn’t move, slip, rotate or rub in any way. The vinyl strike pad isn’t solid in the same way that many other boots are, but it feels like it would provide ample protection to the tendons, whilst being supple enough not to restrict movement. They are at the higher end of the market, but we think they are worth the money and live up to their price point.

Event rider Sam Jennings tested these boots, and found them to be lightweight, extremely breathable, easy to get on and off, and didn’t slip. She said “They also didn’t collect any water, which would add extra weight, and offered great protection to the leg.”

These fully vented boots from LeMieux allow air to strategically flow through the boot to keep tendons cool. The new perforated lining is soft and non-slip, while an elasticated central locking strap keeps the boot secure.

When Sophie tested these boots she found them easy to put on, particularly as the middle strap is elasticated. The price for a full set is mid-market and for the quality, protection and feel of the boots we think is a very reasonable price point. We’d recommend these boots for people wanting a smart set of XC boots, with a good level of protection and a sensible budget.

The front boots have a strike guard that runs down the back of the boot protecting the tendons and ligaments from knocks and overreach injuries, while on the hind boots it runs down the front to protect from impact with fences.

How to choose the best XC boots

Fit is extremely important when it comes to choosing a new pair of cross-country boots as a boot that slips or twists while you’re on course could be a real problem – and you don’t want the boots to rub either. Secure fastenings are also essential for a good fit and to keep the boots in place. While you want the fastenings to be strong, they shouldn’t be difficult to remove in a hurry once you’ve completed the phase.

Some boots have a rigid strike pad, while others are more flexible but may offer less protection – this is something you’ll want to weigh up while selecting a pair. As an increase in tendon temperature in fast work can lead to fibre damage, breathability and airflow are also important features. It’s advantageous to have boots that do not absorb water, too, so as to not add unnecessary drag to your horse’s leg.

First impressions

These boots look really smart, felt super-lightweight, and appear to be well designed with protection in all the right places. I found them a bit fiddly to fit to begin with – to ensure the V-cut front was in the correct position – but after a few attempts I was more confident. 

Overview of performance

These boots are seriously impressive, proving themselves to be tough and hard-wearing. I’ve used them for nearly a year on the cross-country course, for fast work on the gallops, and even in the sea.

I tested both the front and hind boots in size medium on a 15.2hh Irish Draught mare, and they were a great fit. My mare is super-sensitive but didn’t experience any rubs or slipping, and I believe her legs stayed cooler than in her previous cross-country boots. They were very secure and didn’t move at all.

Being so lightweight and having plenty of features to prevent them hindering movement, combined with the level of protection offered, gave me peace of mind whatever discipline we were doing. 

I liked how they offered all-round protection while staying so lightweight. They didn’t hold water and have cleaned up really well even with regular, long-term use. 

You can’t get away from the fact that these boots are expensive, so if you’re not planning to use them frequently you might be better off with a more affordable option – however, they’re excellent quality, definitely one of the best cross-country boots I’ve tried, and if you’ll get the use out of them they are a great investment.

Verdict

Super smart boots with plenty of technical features and materials that gave me peace of mind as they really keep my horse’s legs protected and cool. These boots are pricey, but a worthwhile investment for the competitive rider.

There’s actually quite a lot choice when it comes to therapy and magnetic boots, but as with the best therapy and magnetic rugs, it can be tricky to work out which ones are right for your horse. There are quite a few variables, which are not all necessarily easy to understand at first – but we’re here to help you compare the options and make the best choice for your horse.

How do magnetic boots work?

It’s important to know that there is limited conclusive research into the use of magnets on horses – their efficacy has been debated for many years, but there is a lot of anecdotal evidence suggesting they can be very helpful. For this reason it is particularly important to follow the manufacturer’s guidance when using your chosen therapy boots.

Although each different type of therapy boot – be it magnetic or ceramic-infused – works in a slightly different way, they all aim to improve circulation and blood flow. In turn this is thought to increase oxygen supply to the tissue, reduce muscle tension and aid recovery by removing toxins faster and reducing inflammation. Magnets and ceramic fibres are not healing, but rather are thought to create the right environment to encourage the body to heal itself.

Therapy boots or rugs that contain ceramic fibres are designed to reflect the horse’s back into the body. Whereas when magnets are incorporated within boots or rugs, the magnetic properties in the body’s cells will either attract (those that are opposite) or repel (those that are alike) them, which is thought to increase the activity of the cells. The best cooling boots, on the other hand, are designed to reduce the temperature of the internal structures in the lower leg.

When can you use magnetic boots?

Generally, therapy boots are used as part of a horse’s daily routine. Most are designed to be worn at rest in the stable, while some can be worn during exercise or in the field. Likewise, the length of time they should be worn varies – some can be worn up to 24 hours a day, but it’s advisable to test them for a shorter time under supervision to make sure your horse is used to wearing them.

What does Gauss mean?

Gauss refers to the intensity of the magnetic field. Meaning a magnet’s gauss measurement represents the number of magnetic field lines per square centimetre, emitted by the magnet. The higher a magnet is emitting this value, the more lines of magnetism.

For some, turnout boots are an essential part of keeping their horse protected while in the field. Others, however, believe bare is best when it comes to legs. H&H weighs up the pros and cons

If you have a horse who treats his paddock like a playpen, a pair of the best turnout boots are likely to be high on your list of must-have kit. There are a wide range of turnout boots on the market, offering protection from cuts, abrasion, mud fever – and even the effects of the sun.

Shropshire-based Anna Wainwright has dressage horses and says while she is a firm believer in time at grass for all of hers, nothing goes out without brushing boots all round.

“Some of mine just get their heads down and get on with eating when they go out, but I’ve got one in particular who does the wall of death round the field! I just feel happier that they are protected against striking into themselves when they have boots on,” says Anna.

For others, the main concern is warding off mud fever in winter and the effects of the sun in summer. Jill Thorp breeds and shows Welsh ponies from her West Yorkshire base and uses breathable chaps for both situations.

“In wet winters, our land gets very muddy and lots of our ponies have white socks, with pink skin beneath which is vulnerable to mud fever. We also had a mare who developed photo dermatitis one year and the chaps were very useful in shielding her white socks from the sun,” says Jill.

The pros and cons

Clean, protected legs are the major benefit of turnout boots; there’s no doubt avoiding having to deal with legs caked in mud at bringing in time is a big plus for many people. Fitted correctly, chaps designed to sit well down over the heel and up the leg can also stop mud fever or sunburn/photo dermatitis taking hold.

But there are concerns about the effect of heating the lower leg for long periods by encasing it in boots. East Yorkshire showing rider and trainer Dean Shaw says he only uses boots for turnout where needed.

“I don’t like the idea of horses wearing boots in the field for hours. There’s always the risk that they will slip and rub the leg, or get something trapped between the boot and skin which can cause damage.

“It comes down to weighing up the added protection if you have a horse which tends to be unsettled in the field, or perhaps has been on box rest, against the risk of overheating,” says Dean.

This was a subject covered in a 2009 seminar organised by Equilibrium Products, which manufactures turnout boots, looking at the risks and benefits of boots for competition and turnout. Speakers, including the Animal Health Trust’s Dr Rachel Murray, an expert in orthopaedic veterinary medicine, and scientist and equine exercise physiology Dr David Marlin, warned that some boots could restrict movement and blood supply, as well as overheating the tendons and the surrounding structures.

Despite this, turnout boots remain a popular choice for many horse owners.

“I’m aware of the risk of overheating, but modern boot design and technology means most offer a good balance of protection and breathability. It’s just not worth the risk to go without,” adds Anna Wainwright.

Top tips for making best use of turnout boots

• Most manufacturers recommend boots/chaps should not be kept on for longer than 12 hours at a stretch.

• Ensure the boots or chaps fit correctly; sizing guides are available relating to both the length and circumference of the cannon bone.

• Make sure boots and chaps are washed and dried between uses in muddy, wet conditions to prevent chafing.

• Check the straps and attachments regularly (some horses will chew them) to ensure the boots stay in place.

The best tendon boots for horses provide the backs of your horse’s forelegs with support and protection from strikes and blows that are caused by clashing opposing legs and hind hooves. While turnout is a really important part of a horse’s management, it can be a worrying time for some horse owners – and the best turnout boots for horses could alleviate some of the concerns. Turnout boots can provide a protective barrier against mud fever, overreaching and knocks. They also keep legs cleaner and drier, which not only saves time but helps to maintain healthy skin.

Some styles offer more protection from knocks than others, so if your main concern is injury, then a tougher boot would be preferable to a pair of chaps. It’s also important to choose a water-resistant and breathable boot, as if they hold water they’ll end up doing more harm than good. It’s also advisable to wash and change the turnout boots regularly to prevent rubbing, so a pair that is easy to hose or machine washable and quick to dry is certainly beneficial.

They can be machine washed at 30°C and are quick to dry.

Made of antibacterial ventilated neoprene to avoid rubbing and sweat build-up, these boots have elasticated and angled straps to allow for movement and optimum fit. QHP Q-Cross Technical Eventing Boots

I was really impressed with the vibrant and diverse colours the QHP cross-country boots were available in – perfect for matching to cross-country colours.

On first impressions I thought these boots looked quite basic – so I was surprised by the higher price point especially in comparison to some other boots on the market. They felt more like a brushing boot than a more substantial and technical cross-country boot – I would have expected slightly sturdier fastenings and more breathable material.

However, the boots fitted well, provided ample protection to the tendons and remained firmly in place while out on course. While they didn’t hold any water, they gathered a fair bit of dirt from a sandy course but this brushed off well.

They survived wear and wash really well, staying bright and vibrant. They stored neatly in pairs, too.

I used a medium front and back on a 16.3hh Irish Sport Horse. I think they measured up well and I wouldn’t have wanted them any longer or shorter.

Verdict

These boots performed really well and did their job effectively. They protected my horse’s legs while looking smart and remaining firmly in place. I would recommend these to someone who was looking for a pair of cross-country boots available in a range of colours.

Equilibrium Tri-Zone Impact Sports Boots

On first impressions, I wasn’t overly keen on the honeycomb aesthetic of these boots and the owner of the horse I was using to test the boots mentioned she had previously had trouble fitting a pair of Equilibrium boots on the gelding. However, as soon as we put them on, we was pleasantly surprised with the fit, quality and how lightweight they were. They are similar to the Tri-Zone All Sports boots, but offer much more protection.

When out eventing, the straps were strong and durable, so I didn’t feel the need to tape them, which I often would do to ensure they don’t come undone. After completing the course, the boots hadn’t moved, slipped, rotated or rubbed my horses legs at all and they still felt nice and snug. They also didn’t hold any water, which I was really pleased about because I wouldn’t want a boot that holds extra weight. The vinyl strike pad felt like it would provide ample protection to the tendons, whilst being supple enough not to restrict her movement. This isn’t solid in the same way that other boots are, but it definitely felt protective.

The boots washed very well at 30° and dried looking as new. They store neatly in pairs. There is a small colour selection for these boots (black, white, red or blue), which worked for me as my colours are blue and black. The boots were £150 for a full set, which are the most expensive of all the boots I’ve tested, but I would say they are worth the money and lived up to their price point.

I used a medium front and back on a 16.3hh Irish Sport Horse – they were the perfect length to protect his tendons and the Velcro did up neatly around the leg.

Verdict

Overall I really liked the Tri-Zone Impact Sports boots. I couldn’t really find any faults with them and would highly recommend to anyone wanting a higher budget smart, protective boot for cross-country or other activities where the legs needs protecting.

LeMieux Carbon Air XC Boots

On first look at the LeMieux Carbon Air XC boots, I found them to already be soft and supple, which meant I was less worried about the likelihood of them rubbing my sensitive horse’s legs.

They are very lightweight and I found them easy to put on, and the middle strap is elasticated to help with this. The strike pad sits neatly against the leg and the boot offers full tendon protection. I liked their simple design – the discreet black, grey and red detailing is smart and clean looking. I also liked the design of the vent panel. The Velcro straps are single layer, which made me think they might not be as strong as others that had leather uppers, such as the Mark Todd cross-country boots. However, they were really easy to do up/undo as they weren’t too sticky, which is great for taking them off quickly at the end of a round. I didn’t feel the need to tape the boots either, which I would normally do.

After completing a cross-country round, the boots had remained in place – not slipping or twisting at all – and were still protecting all the key areas. They hadn’t retained much water and weren’t too dirty, either. I was worried that sand or dirt would stick to the vented areas or go into the gaps, but this didn’t seem to happen too much, which was good.

They washed very well at 30° and have come out looking really smart. They also store extremely neatly in pairs. The boots are only available in black, however this wouldn’t bother me as they look really smart. The total price for a set was around £105, which is mid-market and for the quality, protection and feel of the boots I think is a very reasonable price point.

Verdict

I felt these boots were great value for money. I would love it if they were slightly more breathable all round rather than only where the vented detail is, but I expect this would compromise their level of protection. I would recommend these boots for people wanting a smart set of XC boots, with a good level of protection and a sensible budget.

There is a bewildering array of types of horse boots on the market, but the choice is straightforward once you identify what you need, and your budget. Most horse boots are designed to protect your horse’s legs from injury during riding, lungeing or turnout. They provide a layer of protection from injury, damage and trauma if the horse should knock his legs or have a propensity to overreach or strike into himself, as well as absorb some impact shock from the horse’s hoof landing on the ground.

Horse boots are designed to be used in pairs, fore and hind, and some people will use just one pair – or none at all, depending on the activity and needs of the horse. Hind boots tend to be longer, and may be shaped specifically for the hindleg – such as fetlock boots. Occasionally, you might use a single boot – for example a pastern ring.

Boots are made from a variety of materials – neoprene, plastic, sheepskin, leather, for example – and with a range of fastenings. The closures are fastened on the outside of the leg, to prevent them being knocked and coming undone.

The horse’s conformation, movement and discipline will all affect whether he needs boots and which type.

Most common types of horse boots

Brushing boots

These are everyday boots designed to protect the lower part of the horse’s legs from any damage due to the opposite hoof “brushing” or knocking the leg and external knocks, while also protecting the splint bone. They are versatile – used for training, flatwork, lungeing, hacking or turnout – and can be used on fore and hindlegs.

Generally, brushing boots are made from a soft fabric, such as neoprene, which contours to the shape of a horse’s leg, and may be reinforced with PVC on the inner leg. They come in various designs and price points depending on the material and technology.

Some riders prefer to use polo wraps for everyday training, but boots are a time-saving alternative. They are not permitted in a dressage test, but may be worn for warming up.

Speedicut boots are a style of brushing boot that covers further up the inside of the horse’s hind legs, which are typically used for horses that catch themselves in this area while doing fast work.

Tendon and fetlock boots

Tendon boots go on the forelegs, fetlock boots (which are sometimes known as ankle boots) on the hinds.

Tendon boots are designed with showjumpers’ needs in mind as they are similar to a brushing boot in providing protection the inner leg, tendons and fetlocks from knocks, but are open-fronted to allow the horse to feel when he touches a pole. They are often further reinforced to protect against more serious strikes into the tendons as they are designed for jumping.

Fetlock boots just protect the fetlock joint from brushing injuries while leaving the front of the leg exposed. They are made from a variety of flexible yet shockproof materials, and many designs have ventilating properties.

Overreach/bell boots

These surround the hoof and heels to protect from over-reaches and strikes – they are sometimes called bell boots because of their shape. Over-reaching is when the hind hoof cuts into the front. Some horses have a natural propensity to move like this, while the impact is more serious in the faster paces, so they are commonly used across country. Overreach boots are used for training, flatwork, lungeing, hacking, turnout, competition (not dressage) and so on. They tend to be made from neoprene or rubber, sometimes with a fleece trim to prevent rubbing around the pastern.

Cross-country boots

These are similar in shape to brushing boots, but are specifically designed to protect your horse from the extra risk of jumping across country. As such they offer a higher level of protection, while not interfering in any way with his movement. They are made from a strong, lightweight material, with reinforcement such as strike guards to provide extra protection.

They are designed not to absorb water, so the horse isn’t weighed down after jumping into the water fence. They come in a range of technical specification (and are priced accordingly) – some have an air cooling system, with vents to allow cold air to pass through the boot and over the tendons, keeping them cool.

Travelling boots

These offer protection for a large part of the horse’s leg from any impact during travelling. The front boots will cover the knee down to the hoof, while the back boots are shaped to cover the hock and again down to the hoof, and are made of shockproof but lightweight materials. They are usually made in a wrap-around style with velcro straps on the outside of the leg. Look for a tough outer shell with a soft inside material for maximum comfort on a long journey. It’s also advisable to try a few styles to make sure the horse is comfortable as they are anatomically shaped.

Some horses take a dislike to having their full leg restricted in this way, so it is important to expose him gradually to the boot before loading him into the horsebox.

Other types of horse boots

Ring boot

This is also called a fetlock or pastern ring, and is a rubber ring designed to be worn below the fetlock to offer protection to the pastern and coronet band. It’s useful for horses with close movement low down, which can cause shod hooves to brush the opposite side. It can be worn for schooling or turnout.

A sausage boot is similar in style but is much bigger and designed to protect the stabled horses from capped elbows when lying down.

Knee boot

Knee boots used to be a common sight, particularly on racehorses working on the road, but have largely gone out of fashion. Some people still insist on using them, not because their horse trips, but because there is always a risk of slipping on a bad surface and skinning the knee. Traditionally knee boots are made of leather or suede, but now with more modern materials, and are strapped over the knee for road work and travelling.

Therapy boots

An added bonus in your tack room to help a horse heal from injuries or recover from strenuous activity. Magnetic boots increase blood flow in the horse’s leg (and therefore healing), while ice or cooling boots help to cool the legs quickly after a workout to help prevent injury. Some boots use bio-ceramic technology to promote healing.

Hoof boots

These are designed for barefoot horses who need additional protection to cross certain terrain, or when a horse has lost a shoe. There are also types for horses undergoing rehab or suffering from lower limb or hoof problems such as laminitis or abscesses.

How to estimate your horse’s boot size

Most types of horse boots are available in small, medium and large sizes, and a few manufacturers produce boots that are scaled to fit ponies and extra-large horses. Some brands also make wide versions of some sizes. Most manufacturers provide sizing charts with their product packaging.

In general, the height, weight and breed of your horse in combination with the circumference of its leg, will provide you with an estimation of the appropriate boot size to try on your horse.

If you have a small horse with refined bones, perhaps a large pony or Arab that weighs less than 500kg, you’ll probably need small-sized horse boots. Many horses require a smaller size boot on their front limbs and one size larger boot on their hind limbs.

Most thoroughbreds of average bone and an average height of about 16hh will require medium boots, while warmbloods and sport type horses may need large or even extra-large boots.

How to check the fit of horse boots

You should be able to slide one finger between the protective boot and the horse’s leg. Your finger should feel snug between the two surfaces. If the boot is too big or too loose, dirt can get inside and cause abrasions or slide downward where it may disrupt the horse’s movement. If the boot is too tight, it can damage the horse’s tendons.

The length of a boot on your horse’s leg should be checked as well. You don’t want the boot to be so long that it rises to the back of the knee and interferes with normal movement. It should, however, be long enough to cover most of the cannon bone area as well as the inside of the fetlock.

Tips:

• When fastening different types of horse boots, be sure to use even pressure on each strap as you work your way down the leg. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully for your type of boots, and be careful not to over-tighten them.
• Remove boots from your horse’s legs as soon as possible after your workout to allow any accumulated heat to escape and to allow the skin and hair to dry.
• Keep the boots clean and free of accumulated dirt, grime, and sweat, which can be irritating to a horse’s sensitive skin.

Are boots or bandages better for leg protection? Professor Roger Smith FRCVS and Professor Michael Schramme weigh up the pros and cons in this week’s Vet Clinic

Most horses are routinely booted up or bandaged for exercise. While some kind of protection is largely seen as essential, there are benefits and risks in covering or inadvertently constricting the lower limbs.

A common misapprehension is that bandages act to “support” the limb by preventing over-extension of the fetlock. A well-applied layered clinical bandage can provide some such support in foals or very small ponies, but studies have found that this is not the case with an adult horse.

Achieving this requires the application of more rigid materials, such as a splint or fibreglass cast, or orthotic boots (EqueStride or FastTrack, for example). These newer boots can be used while the horse is at pasture or even being ridden, but they are not insubstantial and are intended for injury convalescence rather than routine use.

A simple cloth bandage applied to the cannon region – a so-called “exercise bandage” – obviously provides no support to the fetlock joint, as it does not cover it. It is sometimes claimed that exercise bandages support the flexor tendons, but it is difficult to imagine how. The superficial digital flexor tendon undergoes a peak load in excess of one tonne during exercise, so surrounding it with a bandage will have no influence.

That said, an exercise bandage or boot can guard against external trauma, which typically occurs due to an over-reach – when a hind foot strikes the back of a forelimb. This blunt trauma can be massive, causing substantial tendon damage. A cloth bandage is unlikely to offer much protection other than against the lightest of blows, but rigid boots can be life-saving.

Limb coverings may also help with a horse’s proprioception. This is the part of the nervous system that tracks where the limbs are at any given point during movement, to coordinate locomotion effectively. It is thought that bandages might offer sensory “cues” to improve coordination, which can be helpful – especially when the horse is tired.

Swelling of the legs is common, especially in the hindlimbs, because of the physics related to the length of the leg, the effect of gravity and the slow movement of blood back up the limb. Bandaging legs for work will not help, since limbs tend to swell when the horse is not moving, but applying bandages in the stable can be effective in reducing or preventing puffiness.

Pressure and temperature

While a degree of pressure is needed to keep an exercise bandage in place, it is essential that this pressure is not excessive. The bandage must be applied evenly, with correct tension, overlapping each turn of the bandage by between a third and a half of its width. The addition of sufficient padding underneath can lessen the risk of over-tightening.

Otherwise, bandage sores (affecting the skin) or bandage bows (affecting the underlying tendon) can occur very quickly. This is a real risk for an exercising horse, due to the extra movement in the limb.

A bandage or boot can increase the temperature inside the flexor tendons and the suspensory ligament. The superficial digital flexor tendon in particular generates heat during exercise, because of repeated cycles of stretch and relaxation during normal locomotion. You can appreciate this effect if you rapidly stretch and release a thick elastic band before holding it to your forehead.

The temperature inside the tendon can exceed 45°C during intense periods of exercise. This rise in temperature is counteracted by the flow of blood through the tendon and the cooling effect as the limb moves through the air. A bandage will limit the cooling effect, however, and if too tight, can even reduce blood flow through the tendon.

The effects of temperature rise are not completely understood, but research in the tendon biology lab at the Royal Veterinary College has shown that short periods of hyperthermia (raised temperature) can induce apoptosis – programmed cell death – and therefore could have a deleterious effect on the tendon.

Interestingly, short spells of hypothermia (cooling) after hyperthermia have been shown to be protective against this cell death. This observation provides scientific support for the already established procedures of cooling equine limbs after periods of intense exercise.

It also makes sense to use boots that are vented to allow air to circulate around the tendons, or to remove bandages as soon as the exercise is completed so that cold water or cooling products can be applied to the limbs if necessary.

Complete removal of loading from a tendon, such as that achieved by cast immobilisation after injury, will result in bone and tendon weakening and may induce tendon laxity and some fetlock sinking after the cast is removed, particularly in young, growing animals. Because of the inability of exercise bandages or boots to “unload” a tendon, however, the benefits of normal loading – necessary for tendon health – are unlikely to be adversely affected by their use.

Assess the risk

The choice of boot or bandage should be made depending on the likely risks posed by the specific type of exercise in which the horse is engaged. Any activity that increases the potential of external trauma, such as eventing or showjumping, warrants a robust covering.

Boots can carry more weight than bandages, but are more protective because they tend to be made of thicker material. Given that physical protection would be a key property, they should be tough but also lightweight – to minimise the energetic cost to locomotion – and adequately pliant so as to avoid direct trauma to the skin and underlying structures by the boot itself.

Recent innovations in boot construction have sought to maximise protection and comfort while minimising weight and water absorbency, using materials such as Kevlar, carbon fibre and neoprene.

Although elasticity in a material might be considered important for flexibility, increasing the stretch during application can increase the risk of a boot strap or bandage becoming too tight.

It remains important to consider carefully why you are using any kind of leg protection, so that a risk-benefit assessment can be made. The application of boots and bandages may be an established and routine part of equestrian sport, but there is still much to learn about their effects.

Further research will continue to provide scientific information, helping us to make the right choices.

Smart boots

In a world of increasing miniaturisation and advancing digital technology, tack and accessories have the potential to play a proactive role in horse health.

Boots can be instrumented to provide data that may prove useful for the diagnosis, monitoring and prevention of injury. An example is the Ekico boot , which measures gait asymmetry via pressure sensors to compare fetlock function at key points of the horse’s stride: the attack phase, the swing and the push-off. The boots also record the surface temperature of the limb, which may have relevance to hyperthermia.

Since the early identification of locomotion problems tends to improve outcome, products such as these “smart boots” could be beneficial in detecting lameness before it is visible to the eye. This type of wearable technology is currently in its infancy but could eventually become part of a horse’s everyday wardrobe.

Swiss rider Martin Fuchs rocketed to a seriously impressive victory in the Longines Global Champions Tour grand prix in Cascais, Portugal, on Saturday (22 June) riding the 12-year-old Chaplin.

But on closer inspection you’ll have noticed some rather unusual boots being used on the inside of the stallion’s knees, so we asked Chaplin’s 26-year-old rider to tell us more.

“He strikes his knees sometimes when he jumps,” Martin told H&H — the horse tends to make an “O” shape with his legs over the fences. “When he came to us we were told he needed to wear protection on his legs but the boots they gave us were not a good solution and kept falling off during the course as they didn’t really fit.”

Both Martin’s mother Renata and father Thomas have been heavily involved in the producing and racing of trotting horses and it was they who suggested he try some of their specialist knee boots on Chaplin for protection.

“They already had some at home, so my dad tried them on Chaplin and they worked out really well,” said Martin, who is currently ranked number three in the world.

“I’ve never seen them on a showjumper before, but many people say to me that they need something similar, where can they get them — and I tell them you can just buy them from the trotting stores.”

They are designed so as not to interfere with Chaplin’s leg movement — and the stallion is clearly quite at ease clearing world class 1.60m tracks, despite his sometimes unorthodox leg action. The pair’s grand prix success on Saturday came barely a month after they won the Madrid leg of the LGCT and just hours after he teamed up with Ben Maher — whom he beat into second place in the grand prix — to win the GCL team competition for the London Knights.

“Chaplin has always been a very good horse and won the Globals grand prix in Mexico two years ago before he had an injury and was out for quite a while,” explains Martin of the son of Verdi he’s had for three years. “We never found out exactly what caused it but he has come back very strong.

“He’s very easy to ride, very straightforward and he doesn’t spook at anything,” he added. “He has a great mind, he’s very ambitious and a real fighter. I don’t notice what his front legs are doing at all when I’m riding him, he’s just sensational.”

A rider who was wrongfully disqualified in a dispute over jumping boot rules has successfully overturned the decision after taking the FEI to tribunal.

The FEI Tribunal ruled in Romanian eventer Viorel Bubau’s favour after it was found officials had disqualified him after taking photos of the wrong set of jumping boots and using a non-applicable rule.

Romanian eventer Viorel Bubau was competing in the CCI4*-S (previously CIC3*) in Poland (5 to 7 April), when he was told he had been disqualified as his horse, Arctic, was wearing “illegal boots on his front legs”. But the rule to which the officials were referring did not apply in this competition.

After the pair had finished their showjumping round, the chief steward brought the boots to the attention of the technical delegate (TD), believing them to be longer than the 20cm allowed.

“The TD came to the stall and photographed the cross-country boots (standard 30 cm), instead of the showjumping boots,” said Mr Viorel in his statement to the FEI Tribunal.

“In the stress of the moment I did not realise what he was photographing. A couple of minutes later, when I realised what he was looking for, I went after him and showed him the showjumping boots [which are standard and under 20 cm], but he ignored this.

“At that moment I was focused on writing my appeal’s update in English and I didn’t worry about the TD’s photograph.

“Both boots have the same colour but different lengths and are of soft neoprene materials, in compliance with the rules.

“They were in the same box at that time, and because of the fact that I am not an English language speaker, I did not understand what the steward was requesting or what was happening and I could not clarify the situation.”

The FEI responded that the outcome fell in the “narrow exception” to the field of play doctrine, which on the whole cannot be challenged after a competition has ended.

It added the rule the officials were referring to did not even apply in this competition.

“In the FEI’s view the appellant has been disqualified on the basis of a rule that does not exist in adult eventing competitions,” stated the FEI. “Therefore, the FEI submitted that the disqualification decision is a manifestly arbitrary one and should not be allowed to stand.”

The FEI’s statement added that it had been in touch with the officials concerned, who had acknowledged their error and “expressed a wish for the decision to be reversed”.

The FEI Tribunal ruled this was one of the “rare field of play decisions” that it could overturn.

Mr Bubau’s disqualification was overturned and the results amended, with him finishing 22nd overall on a score that would count as a minimum eligibility requirement.

First impressions

These boots looked simply designed and the block at the back looked like it would keep them in place. The strike pad on the heel made me feel that they would give good protection from overreaches.

Overview of performance

These boots didn’t come down so low that there was a risk of them being trodden on, but came down low enough to protect the bulbs of the heel against over-reaching, which is the ideal position. The Velcro was strong, secure and made them easy to take on and off. The boots stayed in position well and had enough padding to give good protection while still being lightweight. They didn’t make any noise on the hoof and I felt that the horse’s movement wasn’t affected at all. I’m sure they would also be great for turn-out, but I almost think they are too smart for that!

Likes and dislikes

I really like how the soft top doesn’t rub, how well they sit around the hoof and what good value for money they are. However, I do think that they may not work quite as well on a horse with particularly upright, boxy front hooves.

Verdict

First impressions

These are a lovely looking overreach boot. The Velcro was very strong and the top of the boot was very soft so they didn’t rub.

Overview of performance

The anti-strike material goes around the entire overreach boot, so even if it slipped out of position, the hoof would still be protected. They are extremely well made, have worn and washed very well. It is still a bell shape, but fits my horse’s hoof shape well. Overall, it’s a good boot.

Sam’s likes and dislikes

They are much more fitted to the shape of the hoof than some of the other boots on test, and more suited to the shorter heel, flatter-footed horse than the typical warmblood hoof. For cross-country I’d prefer them to be a little bit more shaped around the heel to ensure they don’t rotate, but I’d be confident that they’d offer adequate protection.

Verdict

I would definitely wear these boots cross-country because they stay in place and offer good all-round protection. I would recommend them to a friend.

First impressions

These are an extremely smart boot, and I love the cushioning around the top to ensure they don’t rub.

Overview of performance

They washed well, are very durable and hard wearing, and aren’t showing any scuff marks. The double Velcro is also very strong. However, I think they flare out too much at the bottom and don’t wrap around the hoof to offer the protection I’d like, especially for going cross-country. I wouldn’t choose them for cross-country for that reason and because there is no system to stop them from slipping around. They fit a more upright warmblood hoof better than a flatter traditional thoroughbred hoof.

Sam’s likes and dislikes

It’s a good-looking overreach boot and the double Velcro is a massive plus. I love the soft material around the top, too, and I found them great for turning out in.

Verdict

For big moving horses in the sand school or turnout, they are brilliant and as an overreach boot, they do the job, but I wouldn’t go cross-country in them.

These boots are made from foam, which offers limited protection, and they are very wide at the base. They weren’t finished to as high a standard as I might like.

Overview of performance

They are quite generic on size — fitting a range of hoof shapes — and are just a piece of foam wrapped round the horse’s hoof and held on with a piece of Velcro. They are very basic and absorbed water, which makes them heavy. They do have double Velcro, which is strong.

Sam’s likes and dislikes

There’s no softening at the top of the overreach boot to prevent rubbing. I’d like to see more protection on the heel.

Verdict

I felt these boots don’t offer enough protection to wear for cross-country, but I would use them for turning horses out in.

First impressions

These are a very basic pair of pull-on rubber overreach boots.

Overview of performance

They have advanced the rubber from previous years and whereas before we used to have to soak the rubber in warm water before we could pull them on, we didn’t have to with these boots. They were much easier to put on than I thought they would be, but you need a patient horse who will stand while you put them on.

They came up a little bit bigger than expected, but they stayed on and didn’t split. I wouldn’t go cross-country in them because they offer limited protection. I’d use them for turning horses out in the field.

They have a place in the market and the good thing about the rubber ones are that they won’t absorb water and they are easy to clean — they don’t have to go in the washing machine.

Sam’s likes and dislikes

They have no added protection at the top, so if you leave them on for prolonged periods and they continue to rotate on the hoof there is a risk they might rub. They fit well over the hoof and they sit down nice and low to cover the hoof.

Verdict

I’d use these boots to turn the horse out in if I had had enough time to put them on.

I really like how easily and subtly they fit my horse while protecting him. However the back boots’ straps were quite long and were not quite as secure as the front ones.

I really like these boots. I was confident that my horse’s legs were protected.

These boots never moved during warm up or rounds of jumping. I never felt that I had to do them up tight in order to secure them. They protected my horse well and never interfered with my horse’s jump. Also they kept their fluff and shape after multiple washes.

Likes and dislikes

I love how comfortable my horses feel in these boots and how stylish they look. I am a fan of the bullet fastening system, as it is so easy to get these boots on and off. However, they are expensive and the hind boots do come up quite big.

Verdict

These boots are expensive, but the quality, style and ease of use make them worth the investment if you can afford it.

A traditional design of tendon boots with an unusual colour combination. I thought they looked more suitable for every day use than as a competition pair.

Overview of performance

These boots were well designed and fitted a variety of horses well. The Velcro was secure and the way they fastened looked attractive. They went through the wash multiple times and always came out looking really smart.

Likes and dislikes

They fit really well, are easy to use and to keep clean. I am not personally a fan of the colour combination for competition purposes, but they also come in black which would be more suitable for shows.

Verdict

A very practical, well-designed pair of boots at an exceptionally reasonable price.

I thought these boots looked very smart, stylish, breathable and lightweight.

Overview of performance

These boots were flexible and fitted my horse comfortably. The Velcro was secure and the strike pad on the hinds gave my horse good protection. The tabs at the bottom of the boot meant they were really easy to take off.

Likes and dislikes

I never felt I needed to worry that these boots might pinch my horse, due to the large straps. They are lightweight and flexible, but with not as much as solid protection around the sides of fetlock as some of the others in the group test.

Verdict

These boots are good value for money, lightweight and breathable. I felt they were more suited to event horses than pure showjumpers jumping big tracks

Looked like a smart pair of good quality boots, although they did look a little small.

Overview of performance

These were a really good pair of lightweight cross-country boots that didn’t slip, were extremely breathable, very easy to get on and off, plus they looked as good as new after they had been washed. They also did not collect any water and gave great protection to the leg.

Likes and dislikes

I like how breathable they are and that they didn’t slip at all while going cross-country, plus I was confident my horse’s legs were well protected. I did, however, find they came up a bit small, but only marginally.

Verdict

Although these are expensive, I feel they are worth the money if you are able to spend that much.

They looked very smart and the material inside did not pick up any water. I did feel that the hind boots came up a little big on a lightweight eventer.

Likes and dislikes

I love how much ventilation that have and therefore kept my horses’ legs cool. I would have liked the strike pad to be a little more flexible, but it does offer good protection.

These boots had a thick lining which absorbed water and they weren’t as breathable as the some of the others on test. I thought that the bottom elastic strap worked well as they didn’t slip and were flexible while giving good pressure all-round. I felt these boots offered good protection without restricting my horse’s movement.

Likes and dislikes

I like how flexible these boots were and how they moulded to my horse’s legs while giving good protection. But they do get quite heavy when they get wet.

Verdict

Good boots for an amateur looking for an easy, multi-purpose boot with good protection without spending loads.

First impressions

These boots were not very lightweight to hold in your hand and I was interested to see how the straps would perform as the middle one was elasticated while the top and bottom ones were not.

Overview of performance

I found the inside of the boot to be very thick, which made them heavy; more so once the boot had picked up water. However, they did protect the legs well without a strike pad, which makes them really flexible. I didn’t find them true to size. I would recommend going up a size from normal.

Likes and dislikes

I don’t like the way the thick lining retained so much water and I found it difficult to get even pressure down the leg due to the middle strap being elasticated. But I liked that they didn’t slip and how flexible and durable they are.

Verdict

These would suit someone who is keen to buy a brushing boot that will also be good for going cross-country in.

The Michael Jung Event Boots for front legs offer perfect protection during eventing competitions. They are lightweight but extremely hard-wearing boots, suitable for the toughest conditions. The outer material is tear-resistant nylon with leather reinforcements at the front and strike protection at the back for maximum protection of the tendons. They are lined with shock-absorbing and waterproof EVA foam.

The Michael Jung event boots for the hind legs come with large, additional leather reinforcements on the inside and a flexible fetlock protection, which doesn’t affect the horse’s mobility. They have strike protection at the front and two wide velcro fasteners for excellent hold.

First impressions

A simple looking pair of boots, which felt very lightweight and I was interested to see how the strike protection at the back would fair.

Overview of performance

These were very lightweight and extremely easy to take on and off. They didn’t absorb water and remained very light on my horse’s legs throughout. However they were not as flexible as some of the others on test and I felt that they worked best on my more heavy-boned horses.

Likes and dislikes

I like that the neoprene inside was hardwearing, didn’t rub and molded around the leg. I also liked that they remained lightweight. I tended to use them on the same horse each time as I think they are most beneficial to mold to particular horse’s legs over a period time.

Verdict

Best suited for use on a single horse with good bone.

First impressions

These boots felt quite heavy in my hand and I wasn’t a fan of their appearance as I prefer a more simple design.

Overview of performance

These boots proved to be flexible on the horses’ legs, were true to size and fitted well. They did protect all the vital areas of my horse’s legs, but they did absorb water and got heavy. They were not particularly breathable.

Likes and dislikes

I really liked how flexible they are and that the lining didn’t rub at all. I think some of the other boots offered more protection and I dislike how much they absorbed and retained water.

Verdict

Overall, I thought they were quite expensive and I wouldn’t choose them myself.

First impressions

I thought these looked rather dated in design. I used a very similar boot nearly 10 years ago.

Overview of performance

These boots were very tough and hard wearing. They were very secure on my horse’s legs and didn’t slip at all. However, my horse’s legs did feel quite hot after going cross-country, plus they are quite rigid and didn’t allow much flexibility. They are also quite generously sized.

Likes and dislikes

I liked how robust they are and how they do give good all-round protection. However I would prefer them to be more flexible, plus I worry that the elastic straps may go baggy over time.

Verdict

These boots look rather old-fashioned, although their protective element will last a long time.

First impressions

I really liked these boots as soon as they came out of the packet. The design with the ice pack and boot itself looked really tough, well-made and easy to use.

Overview of performance

I found these boots were very effective as the ice packs came out the freezer very cold and they cooled the horses’ legs by about 6 degrees* after being worn for 20mins after strenuous exercise. They were very easy to put on, didn’t move and are great value for money.

Likes and dislikes

I like how easy they are to use and how effectively they cooled the legs all over. I can’t really fault them and would recommend them to anyone with a freezer or someone that has the time to pack a freezer bag full of ice when travelling.

Sam used an infrared non-contact digital thermometer to measure the temperature of the horses’ legs immediately after work and then again after the cool boots had been applied to the legs for 20mins. Eskadron’s Pro-Cool Boot Set is ideal for therapy in the event of strain, over-work, swelling and acute trauma, but also as an excellent form of prevention of injuries. The boots allow you to alternating between cooling and heat treatment, which makes them suitable for helping to treat tendon injuries, damaged tendon sheaths and suspensory ligaments. They can be used while the horse is standing or during exercise. The boots are available in three sizes to ensure a perfect fit.

First impressions

I really liked that they came with a cool bag, but it looked like they may need ice blocks in the bag to keep really cold. They looked very smart, well designed and strongly made.

Overview of performance

These boots were very quick and easy to put on and were very well designed so they cooled all the important areas of the horse’s legs. After around 20mins of wear, they cooled the legs by approximately five degrees after strenuous exercise*. As they were so easy to put on, they were great for horses that come off the cross-country slightly “wired”.

Likes and dislikes

The ice bag is a nice touch, but any cool bag would do the same job. I liked how easy they are to use and how proficiently they cooled the legs.

Aerochill Cooling Boots have been developed to promote recovery and cool horse’s legs after exercise. They are designed to follow the shape of the horse’s leg and fetlock so they will offer support and reduce typical post-work swelling. They use evaporative cooling to decrease recovery time, ensure the cooling of tissue and regulate outer thermal temperature. The boots can be reactivated by simply soaking in cold water and are suitable for use on front and hind legs.

First impressions

These boots only need to go in cold water, rather that a freezer, prior to use. They looked like they would cover all the vital areas of the leg and were not complicated to fit.

Overview of performance

You did need to soak them a lot longer than the instructions said and they didn’t cool the legs as much as a pair using an ice pack and freezer would (*cooled the horse’s legs by around 2 degrees when worn for 20mins after strenuous exercise). They were easy to put on, had good coverage and did cool the leg to some extent.

Likes and dislikes

I like the fact they don’t need a freezer to prepare them, making them useful to use at competition were you don’t have access to ice.

Official description

The Felix Bühler Cold Water Boots contain a special granulate which absorbs water, so you just place them in a bucket full of water to activate them. When using the boots for the first time or after longer periods of non-use, soak the boots in water for around two hours prior to use. When used regularly, the boots only need to be soaked in water for half an hour in order to be able to cool again. The cooling effect lasts for approximately 20-30 min.

First impressions

These boots didn’t look as effective as the others in terms of the mechanism used for cooling. But they did look easy and convenient to use.

Overview of performance

These cool boots did proof very easy to use, as all you needed to do is soak them in cold water and put onto the legs. They did cool the legs to some extent, but not as much as the others in the test group (by approximately 2.5 degrees after being worn by horse for 20mins after strenuous exercise*). The Velcro was very tough and hard-wearing, plus they didn’t slip. But if you have access to ice, I think you can do better for the price.

Likes and dislikes

I like that you don’t need access to a freezer to use them, which is convenient when you are out and about. They can’t be washed in the washing machine, which is a negative compared to some of the others in the group test.

Official description

The easy-to-use Icehorse Tendon Wraps provide uniform compression and coverage to reduce inflammation and heat of the tendons and ligaments following work or injury. The wraps contain unique Icehorse inserts, which stay cold for more than hours. These freeze to a snow-like consistency for easy moulding to the horse’s legs for maximum coverage. The wraps are made from a breathable non-neoprene anti-migration fabric, keeping the wraps in place and the ice compressed to the area being treated.

First impressions

I like the fact this design used ice packs that are then secured against the leg, but I found the boots were very confusing to put on and I was concerned that the ice pack was going to be placed directly on to the skin.

Overview of performance

The ice packs came out of the freezer not as cold as the other ice packs we tested. As a result they didn’t cool the legs as effectively (*cooled about 3 degrees after 20mins worn by the horse following strenuous exercise). They did also prove very complicated and took a while to put on, plus I found they didn’t evenly cool all the areas of the leg.

Likes and dislikes

Once on these boots did cool some parts of the leg, but would have preferred them to cool a larger area.

Rambo Travel Boots are luxury travel boots with reinforced panel, smooth inner and easy to use closures. They co-ordinate with the Rambo range.

The Brooms’ first impressions

These boots had a really good weight to them without being restrictive.

Overview of performance

We were really, really pleased with these boots. They didn’t move, even on our horse that wriggles a lot when travelling, they gave great protection and came up nice and high on the leg. They also washed really well.

The Brooms’ likes and dislikes

I liked everything about these boots, particularly the good big straps that you can easily get hold of. The height of the boots was generous. If your horse is under 16.2hh, you might want to try the cob size.

Verdict

I would definitely recommend these, but the full size needs to be on a 16.2hh+ horse as they do come up tall.

Equithème’s official description

Equithème Tyrex 1200D Shipping Boots are made from 1200 denier waterproof and breathable ripstop polyester with 12mm foam padding, and a 450g synthetic sheepskin lining. They are secured with three wide self-gripping straps with reflective logo in centre.

The Brooms’ first impressions

I thought these looked similar to the Eskadron ones, but with better straps.

Overview of performance

They were a great fit and were on a par with some of the more expensive boots in the group test. The straps are strong and easy to use, they offer good protection and still look as good as new after multiple uses.

The Brooms’ likes and dislikes

The straps make these boots very easy to take on and off. I put them on the youngsters as you can put them on and removed them very quickly. Very hard to fault and great value.

Eskadron Pro Traveller Travel Boots are full-height travelling boots designed to provide maximum protection and comfort. The Pro-Traveller fits superbly and comes in front and hind pairs. We really loved the look of these boots, including the fleece lining

Overview of performance

These were a really, really good set of travel boots. They fitted very well, stayed in place and offered good all-round protection. This fleece lining washed well, but the straps are quite thin and have folded a bit.

The Brooms’ likes and dislikes

These boots are good quality and our horses travelled well in them, but we think they may come up a bit snug on a big boned horse.

Verdict

I would recommend these for thoroughbreds and fine warmbloods, but not for a horse with a lot of bone

Overview of performance

These boots are very protective, but they did slip slightly when being worn which caused the plastic bottom part to get trodden on and fray. Despite this, they are well made and the straps are very strong.

The Brooms’ likes and dislikes

I really like the florescent piping, which was very good for the shows that finished in the dark. But the boots lost their shape once they had been washed, so they may be better to be cleaned with a sponge, rather than washing.

Verdict

Best suited to an owner that will only use them occasionally and is happy to sponge them to keep them clean.

Rhinegold’s official description
