The Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe horse race is a Group One Flat race held usually at Longchamp racecourse in France on the first Sunday of October each year. The contest is for horses aged three or over and is run over about 1½ miles. It is regarded as Europe’s most prestigious “all-aged” race and the winners are often considered champions.

The first running of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe

The famous race was first run on Sunday, 3 October 1920. The inaugural running was won by Comrade, a three-year-old colt owned by Evremond de Saint-Alary.

A monument

The top-class contest is named after the famous monument standing in Paris, the Arc de Triomphe. In a promotional poster for the big race in 2003, a slogan in French claimed: “It’s not a race, it’s a monument.”

Relocated

The Arc was cancelled twice during World War II, in 1939 and 1940, and it was run at Le Tremblay in 1943 and 1944. Due to renovations at Longchamp, the 2016 and 2017 editions of the Arc took place at Chantilly.

A healthy purse

Qatar Racing currently sponsors the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and the winning prize-pot is an impressive £1,452,712.

Can Enable do it?

A total of 15 horses will battle it out on Sunday (4 October) for the prestigious title, but on “very soft” ground this year. Ground concerns resulted in the withdrawal of the Aidan O’Brien-trained Love.

Race favourite Enable, who is trained by Britain’s John Gosden, will be attempting to race into the history books by being the only horse to win the Arc three times – before she retires to the breeding shed.

Eight horses have won the Arc twice; Ksar (1921, 1922), Motrico (1930, 1932), Corrida (1936, 1937), Tantieme (1950, 1951), Ribot (1955, 1956), Alleged (1977 — pictured top with Lester Piggott in this year — and 1978), Treve (2013, 2014), Enable (2017, 2018).

H&H finds out more about the superstar filly, who was recently crowned Cartier Horse of the Year...

Enable has captured the hearts of racing fans across not only the country, but also Europe and not least the heart of her jockey Frankie Dettori. She is a freak of nature, she has girl power in abundance, and for her owner and trainer, she is a “filly of a lifetime”.

The phenomenal three-year-old filly was bred by her owner Khalid Abdullah’s Juddmonte Farm and therefore runs in the famous silks carried by the mighty Frankel.

The daughter of Nathaniel is in training with Newmarket-based John Gosden and has been ridden in all but two of her races by the brilliant Frankie Dettori.

She made her first appearance on a racecourse in November 2016 as a two-year-old. It was a comfortable winning debut in the one-mile maiden race on the all-weather at Newcastle and propelled her into an unforgettable 2017.

A form that speaks for itself

Enable’s three-year-old campaign kicked off in April when she switched to the turf for the first time at Newbury — she stayed on to finish third behind stable companion Shutter Speed.

This week, she was crowned the Cartier Horse of the Year at racing’s equivalent of the ‘Oscars’, the Cartier Racing Awards (pictured, below). She was also the deserved recipient of the Cartier three-year-old filly in 2017.

Her 2017 form speaks for itself (3 1 1 1 1 1 1) and this year she created history when winning an outstanding five Group One victories.

Winning in the rain

The wonder filly’s flurry of Group One triumphs began when she headed to Epsom for the Investec Oaks, where she was up against eight fillies headed by red-hot favourite Rhododendron, runner-up in the 1,000 Guineas.

It was a dramatic renewal of the 12-furlong Classic and was run in driving rain when a thunderstorm broke shortly beforehand. However, Enable quickening clear of the field inside the final furlong to score by five lengths.

She became the first filly in seven years to follow up victory in the Investec Oaks with success in the Group One Darley Irish Oaks at the Curragh in Ireland — Frankie hurried back from a shoulder injury to partner the superstar.

Taking on the boys

When she went to Ascot for the Group One King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes, it was the first time she had come up against older horses and colts. Frankie got down to his near-minimum weight of 8st 7lb to partner her again.

She had a formidable challenge with the likes of Highland Reel, Jack Hobbs and Ulysses in the mix. However, in her usual fashion she cruised up, powering away from her rivals.

Breaking records

Her final hurrah of the season saw her become the first three-year-old filly trained in Britain to win the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. She is also the seventh horse to capture the race after winning the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes in the same season — emulating greats such as Ribot, Mill Reef and Dancing Brave.

The best news for Enable fans is that she is set to be back in training for the 2018 Flat season (the breeding shed can wait a bit longer) and may even head back to France to defend her Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe title.

The outstanding racing mare Treve has given birth to her first foal.

The French racehorse, who took back-to-back victories in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in 2013 and 2014, safely delivered a bay colt at noon yesterday (1 February).

Mare and foal, who is the son of Dubawi, are at Al Shaqab Racing’s Haras de Bouquetot stud in Normandy, France.

“Treve has produced a good first foal,” said stud manager Benoy Jeffroy.

“Everything went well and after being a few days overdue, she decided to foal at lunchtime.

“Treve and her foal are doing really well. The next chapter to the story starts now, and we can only hope this colt will be as fast as his parents!”

A statement from the stud added the seven-year-old mare is due to visit Haras de Bouquetot’s new stallion Shalaa this year.

Trained by Criquette Head-Maarek, Treve’s earnings topped £6 million during her racing career.

She won nine out of her 13 starts and in 2014 became the first dual winner of the Arc since Alleged in 1977/78.

Treve, who is by Motivator, was originally retired after her second Arc victory in 2014, but owner Sheikh Joaan al Thani then decided to go for a third shot in 2015, where she finished fourth.

“There is no disgrace in being beaten by Golden Horn [winner of the 2015 race]. He was the Derby winner and there are no excuses,” said trainer Criquette-Head at the time.

“She deserves to go to stud and enjoy herself now. She has been unforgettable.”

The 15-year-old stallion Dubawi has sired dozens of Group One winners, including Postponed and Dodging Bullets.

In his career on the track, Dubawi was undefeated as a four-year-old and claimed victories at Goodwood and in Group races at Newmarket and Curragh.

Treve’s next match — multiple Group One winner Shalaa — is standing at stud for the first time this year.

“He’s probably the best horse that I’ve ridden,” declared jockey Frankie Dettori after Golden Horn took the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe yesterday (Sunday 4 October).

Popular mare Treve was going for a historic third win in the Paris race, but it was the John Gosden-trained Derby winner that triumphed at Longchamp.

The son of Cape Cross won by two lengths to Flintshire, who was also second in the race last year. A neck back was New Bay, with Treve just a nose behind in fourth.

It was Golden Horn’s fourth Group One win of the year — following success at Epsom, then in the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown and finally in the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown.

He has won seven from eight starts, only finishing second once in the Juddmonte at York.

Ridden by Frankie Dettori, the pair raced wide of the field for the first furlong, before settling and pulling clear to win by two lengths.

”My tactics were good but his performance was unbelievable,” said Frankie.

“Today you saw the real Golden Horn. He put to bed a great Arc field like a true champion. Over the last furlong and a half it would have been impossible for any horse to get near me.

“I pressed the button and he flew. Think of the horses he has beaten and beaten well. I spent the last furlong enjoying myself. He has given me some tremendous pleasure and is probably the best horse that I’ve ridden.”

Frankie now shares the record for a jockey winning the race for the fourth time with six others. His other wins came aboard Lammtarra, Sakhee and Marienbard.

Owner and breeder Anthony Oppenheimer is now considering one final race at the Breeders’ Cup in Keeneland, before Golden Horn takes up his stud duties at Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket.

Last year Treve became the first dual winner of the world’s richest turf race since Alleged in 1977/78. The win also escalated her to Europe’s highest-earning mare.

Treve was retired after the 2014 race, however, owned Sheikh Joaan al Thani decided to go for a third attempt at the Arc.

The five-year-old, by Motivator, has now been retired to stud.

Trainer Criquette Head-said: “There is no disgrace in being beaten by Golden Horn. He was the Derby winner and there are no excuses.

“She deserves to go to stud and enjoy herself now. She has been unforgettable.”

French racehorse Treve (pictured) proved she was queen of Longchamp at the weekend (Sunday 5 October) — taking the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe for the second year running.

Treve became the first dual winner of the world’s richest turf race since Alleged in 1977/78. The win also escalated her to Europe’s highest-earning female, having now won £5,391,948.

Credit was given to her trainer Criquette Head-Maarek, who was one of the few that hadn’t written the four-year-old off after disappointing performances this summer.

The filly finished third at Royal Ascot and fourth in the Prix Vermeille last month. After Ascot it was found she had problems with a hoof, but following veterinary treatment Criquette insisted on having a second shot at the Arc. Treve rewarded her trainer’s faith, as well as her supporters, winning at 11-1.

“The only thing I can say is that it is the best race I’ve ever won — when you have to prepare a horse with problems and you win,” she said.

Last year Treve stormed to victory in the Arc, winning by five lengths. This year she won by two lengths ahead of Flintshire and Oaks winner Taghrooda — trained by John Gosden, who was sent off favourite.

“She’s some horse,” jockey Paul Hanagan remarked of Treve after the race.

Another British raider, the Roger Varian-trained St Leger winner Kingston Hill, finished fourth.

In the build up to the race jockey Frankie Dettori was controversially replaced by French rider Thierry Jarnet, who won in 2013 aboard the filly.

Frankie, as owner Sheikh Joaan’s retained rider, was due to partner Treve in 2013 but was on the sidelines with a broken ankle. And a year later Criquette was insistent Thierry took the ride.

“It was very important for me to have Thierry on board,” said Criquette. “I know him, he knows the filly, he knows her turn of foot, he knows what gaps she will go through.”

It was a fourth win in the race for the 47-year-old Frenchman — he also won in 1992 with Subotica and in 1994 with Carnegie.

“The fact that she had all those niggling problems meant it was a different kind of performance and the fact is the Vermeille facilitated the run. Obviously I feel a huge part of history — so few horses have won the Arc twice,” he said.

Treve was retired after the race, and looks set to head to owner Sheikh Joaan al Thani’s stud. Early indications suggest she will go to Galileo.

Workforce, the Sir Michael Stoute-trained three-year-old, won the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe yesterday (Sunday 3 October) at Longchamp, Paris.

The record-breaking 2010 Derby winner gave trainer Sir Michael Stoute his first Arc win, after 38 years of trying.

Workforce became only the sixth horse to have won both the Derby and the Arc in the same year.

Following some bumping between runners back in the field, though Workforce wasn’t involved, connections had to wait almost half an hour before the result was confirmed.

After a 7-length victory in the Derby in June, Workforce put in a disappointing performance in the King George at Ascot.

The horse was not confirmed to run in the Arc until Thursday morning (30 September).

But Workforce, ridden by Ryan Moore, settled back in the field before winding his way through to beat the Japanese horse Nakayama Festa by a head.

Earlier in the day five-year-old Goldikova made history with a record-breaking 11th victory in a Group/Grade One race winning the Prix de la Foret.

The Freddie Head-trained Goldikova has now won more Group/Grade One races than any other European trained horse.

Ridden by Olivier Peslier Goldikova beat the Richard Hannon-trained colts Paco Boy and Dick Turpin into second and third respectively.

She now heads to California trying for a third consecutive Breeders’ Cup Mile win.

Sea The Stars has made racing history by becoming the first horse to win the 2000 Guineas, The Derby and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

The John Oxx-trained three-year-old won at Longchamp racecourse in Paris yesterday (Sunday 4 October) leaving Youmzain, ridden by Kieren Fallon and trained by Mick Channon, taking the runner up spot for the third consecutive year.

Although fighting hard for his head in the early stages of the race and being trapped behind other horses, Sea The Stars found a gap and ran on to win by two lengths.

Sea The Stars’s dam Urban Sea won the race in 1993.

Winning trainer John Oxx, who also saddled the 2000 Arc winner Sinndar, said: “It’s a great relief. We thought we had the best horse in the race and that he deserved to win but it’s the Arc. It’s the end of the year and it’s easy to get beaten in the Arc.”

“He did enough when he hit the front and he’s a great, great horse to keep on winning. This horse has the gears and if a horse has speed and gears, he’ll get himself out of trouble.”

Jockey Mick Kinane added: “He’s exceptional — he’s just a phenomenal, rare horse. They were going a nice pace and I knew I would need a bit of luck in the straight, no matter what happened, but I knew I had the pace to go anywhere I wanted.”

The son of Cape Cross has now won six group one races in a row this summer and connections are considering whether Sea The Stars will head to the Breeders’ Cup in California on 7 November — but so far no decisions have been made.

“He’s done a lot this year and we take it race by race with him. We will let the dust settle and now is not the time to make a decision about the Breeders’ Cup,” said Oxx.

“We will see how the horse is and then decide. To have got as far as the Arc is a lot to be thankful for. I can’t see him staying in training next year, but we haven’t discussed it.”

The Aga Khan’s brilliant filly Zarkava was named Cartier Horse of the Year at the 2008 Cartier Racing Awards last night (Monday 17 November).

The unbeaten three-year-old,retired to stud, counted the French 1000 Guineas, the French Oaks and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe among her five victories this year.

She beat Breeders’ Cup Classic hero Raven’s Pass, four-time Group One winner Henrythenavigator, King George and Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Duke Of Marmalade and Derby, Juddmonte International and Champion Stakes victor New Approach to the prize.

Zarkava, who was trained by Alain de Royer-Dupre, also took the three-year-old fillies’ title, while the equivalent colts’ prize went to the Jim Bolger trained New Approach.

The John Gosden-trained Rainbow View was best two-year-old filly for owner George Strawbridge, and David Wachman’s Mastercraftsman was best two-year-old colt.

Aidan O’Brien’s Ballydoyle stable won the Cartier prizes for older horses and stayers with Duke Of Marmalade and Yeats respectively, who took his third Ascot Gold Cup in June, while the Freddy Head-trained Marchand D’Or, winner of the July Cup, Prix de l’Abbaye and Prix Maurice de Gheest at the top level in 2008, took the sprinter’s award home to France.

The Cartier/Daily Telegraph Award of Merit went to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum for his vast contribution to racing and breeding around the world.

Sheikh Mohammed said: “I am delighted by this award. I love racing and I will always be involved in the sport. Thank you very much.”

Zarkava, winner of the 2008 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, has been retired to stud.

Unbeaten in seven starts, the 3-year-old filly has been retired by her owner the Aga Khan. She will be covered by his 2003 Arc winner Dalakhani next year.

The super filly, who is trained in France by Alain de Royer-Dupre, has won five Group 1 horse races including the Arc, the Prix Marcel Boussac, Poule d’Essai des Pouliches, Prix de Diane and Prix Vermeille.

Super filly Zarkava flew the flag for her sex last weekend in Paris when she became the first filly in 15 years to win the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, one of the world’s most prestigious races.

With the French 1,000 Guineas, French Oaks and Prix de Vermeille all under her belt already this season, the Aga Khan’s filly maintained her unbeaten record in fine style when adding the world’s richest turf race to her list of achievements on Sunday (5 October) at Longchamp.

Despite starting the 13-8 favourite, the odds seemed against her. The filly was drawn in stall one, an unfavourable berth that no Arc winner has raced from since 1964, and the last time a filly won the 1m 4f contest was Urban Sea in 1993.

Ridden by the supremely confident Belgian jockey Christophe Soumillon, the race was almost over before it begun for Zarkava, after a bump at the start nearly unseated Christophe.

But the three-year-old soon settled and the pair travelled at the rear for most of the race before storming through in the final furlong to win by 2 lengths.

Her French trainer Alain de Royer-Dupre described the race as “perfect”. But there are currently discussions about whether the filly will go on to race next year as a four-year-old, or whether after her seven straight wins she will be retired.

Runner up — for the second year in a row — was Britain’s Youmzain, trained by Mick Channon and ridden by Richard Hills. Youmzain did not have the best luck in running, but it is doubtful that he would ever have got to the impressive winner.

Mick is currently recovering from car crash on the M1 in August that killed his friend and bloodstock agent Tim Corby.

It’s Gino and Soldier Of Fortune were declared joint-third in a dead heat.

But Aidan O’Brien’s hotly tipped Duke Of Marmalade never looked like winning his 6th Group One of the season. Ridden by Johnny Murtagh, he never really got into the race and finished in 7th place.

Dylan Thomas survived a 35min enquiry to win the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe and cement his place as Europe’s best middle-distance horse on Sunday 7 October.

Ridden by Kieren Fallon (pictured), for whom this was a second Arc triumph, the four-year-old son of Danehill held off a fast-finishing Youmzain to give his trainer, Aiden O’Brien, a first Arc victory.

The team were perhaps lucky to keep the race — French rules concerning interference during a race are far stricter than in Britain — but there can be no doubt that the best horse won.

For Dylan Thomas, who has won all his six outings under Kieren Fallon, this was a sixth Group One triumph, and this year he has also won the Prix Ganay at Longchamp, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot and a second successive Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown.

He is likely to finish his racing career in the Breeders’ Cup Turf later this month at Monmouth Park, New Jersey, but he will not be ridden by Fallon, whose trial starts at the Old Bailey today.

He, along with five others, are accused of conspiracy to defraud betting exchange punters.

Authorized, the Epsom Derby winner, pulled hard and never looked comfortable under Frankie Dettori. The best British finisher was Youmzain, who came within a head of giving former England footballer Mick Channon a first Arc winner.

Rail Link – a relative outsider at 24-1 – clinched the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamps on Sunday, ahead of a world-renowned triumvirate of runners. The three-year old colt overcame Hurricane Run (defending Arc champion), Shirocco and Japanese favourite Deep Impact to take France’s most prestigious race and notch up a seventh Arc win for his trainer André Fabre.

In his pink and blue silks, jockey Stephane Pasquier left the three racing giants in his wake as he navigated Rail Link over the finish line to score his second ever Group 1 win. The result marked a huge disappointment for the 3000 Japanese racing enthusiasts who had flown over from Japan to give 1-2 favourite Deep Impact and jockey Yutaka Take the support they deserved.

Pasquier hung behind Deep Impact, waiting for him to make the run and then followed suit. Rail Link overtook almost immediately, coming neck and neck with the mare Pride before winning by a neck. Pride took second leaving Deep Impact third by half a length – his second defeat in 12 starts. Hurricane Run finished fourth and Shirocco, who was in second place as the runners turned for home, in last position.

Rail Link’s trainer Andre Fabre did not doubt the colt’s ability but was unsure whether he would beat the older horses. Winning owner Khalid Abdullah received $1.45 million of the Arc’s $2.55 million prize pot. The Saudi prince, who bred Rail Link himself for Juddmonte Farm, has won at Longchamps on three previous occasions: a double in 1985 with Rainbow Quest and a year later with Dancing Brave.
