‘We loved him more than you can imagine’: farewell to police horse with the biggest feet, the longest wees – and a heart of gold

Merseyside Police has paid tribute to a horse with the biggest feet – and the longest wees – in the country, and who has left “the biggest hoofprints on our hearts” after his death aged 27.

PH Major served in Liverpool for 20 years, then enjoyed three “fabulous years” of retirement with mounted branch groom Claire and her veteran horse Ed. The pair were best friends until the decision had to be made to let them go.

Stable and mounted training manager Lindsay Gaven told H&H the mounted branch bought 17.2hh part-bred Shire Major as a four-year-old.

“He was the most kind, affectionate horse who loved to conserve energy between his shifts and sleep and snore really loudly,” she said, adding that Major’s hooves, at 23cm wide, were the biggest of any police horse in the UK.

“Major had a reputation for showing his excitement when any hoof touched grass; he would leap into the air and squeal, hoping his rider could stay with him and share his delight. If they didn’t manage to stay with him, he would just look down at the floor and wait for them to get to their feet and climb back on.

“This meant Major could not contain his excitement reliably enough to lead the winner in of the Grand National at Aintree. On any other surface he was a true reliable gentleman but ridden on grass, he was just way too excitable.

Ms Gaven said that when the police horses were ridden on the beach at Formby, no one wanted to be behind him as his huge feet would scoop up huge amounts of seawater and soak anyone within range.

“Major also bucked so hard with excitement one day in a musical ride, he managed to break the girth straps off both sides of the saddle,” she said. “He came to a halt with a face of glee as a musical ride was just way too exciting when you got to run around in patterns with all your favourite colleagues.

“He would always select the busiest road in Liverpool city centre to decide to have a wee. These wees usually lasted two full cycles of red/amber/green traffic light changes, much to the disgust of his equine colleagues who had to tolerate the splashback.”

But Major was also a “true leader”, policing football matches, heading numerous parades and helping train and support both equine and human colleagues.

“He held his position, helping guide the bus through the crowds at the Liverpool FC homecoming parade [after their Champions League victory] in 2005,” Ms Gaven said. “He paced the bus with his rider, who could not see ahead because of the sheer number of people lining the route. He would often be the sergeant’s horse at the football matches; he knew where to stand, and he would park up and await the fans and their Polo mints, who of course in his mind were all there to see him.”

Major was given a long service award from Merseyside Police in 2022, for his 20 years’ continuous service. He retired to live with Claire not long afterwards.

“He had very little respect for fencing of any sort and also needed his feet picking out in a specific order otherwise this confused him and he wouldn’t lift any,” Ms Gaven said. “So in Major’s best interests, we wanted to rehome him with someone who didn’t mind the old boy’s attitude to life and could understand him.

“He lived three fabulous years with more love than you can imagine, full CCTV monitoring for his fence breakage and escape attempts, he grazed in his patrol pair with his best friend Ed and every day would climb upon his muckheap to survey his kingdom.

“Every day, he was Mr Reliable, a brave strong horse with a heart of gold who leaves the biggest hoofprints on our heart.”

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police paid tribute to Major’s character and service, thanking Claire for giving him “the best retirement”.

“We loved him more than you can imagine,” the spokesperson said.

‘He’s loving the attention’: meet police horse who overcame emergency colic surgery to lead in his 10th Grand National winner

Police horse Silver is trusted with one of the most important jobs at the Grand National.

The 18-year-old gelding, who serves with Merseyside Police, marked a special milestone this year when he led in the winner of the Aintree showpiece for a 10th time. The moment was even more special as Silver was taken to veterinary hospital in August last year for emergency colic surgery.

The team at the University of Liverpool’s Philip Leverhulme Equine Hospital found a lipoma was causing the issue.

“What followed was a long road to recovery: box rest, endless cuddles, careful hand walks, hand grazing and gentle time back out in the paddock,” said a police spokesperson.

“Fast forward to now, he’s fully recovered, back on full duties and loving the attention. We’re all convinced he thought the crowd was there just for him!”

The spokesperson said the police horses “always make us proud” but Silver “really outdid himself” at Aintree.

Silver was joined by his equine colleague Owen to accompany 2026 Randox Grand National hero I Am Maximus into the winners’ enclosure on Saturday (11 April).

Reflecting on the festival as a whole, Merseyside Police chief inspector Geoff Stewart said: “Merseyside has welcomed huge crowds at Aintree this week and I would like to thank the vast majority of racegoers for enjoying themselves safely and responsibly, while helping make it another successful event for the region.

“During the course of the three days our officers have enjoyed engaging with racegoers and ensuring their safety, and we are pleased to report there was a great atmosphere throughout with a low number of incidents.

“Months of extensive planning alongside our partner agencies goes into large-scale events such as this to ensure they run as smoothly as possible.

“Given the numbers of people attending, I am delighted that once again the overwhelming majority of visitors behaved themselves responsibly and enjoyed the fantastic atmosphere.”

‘She’d give you heaven and earth’: brave police horse who famously wore sunglasses clocks off after her final shift

A police horse who wowed crowds and won hearts when sporting a fabulous pair of designer sunglasses at Royal Ascot – and who served with “unmatched bravery, professionalism, and heart” for 12 years – has clocked off from her final shift.

Police Horse Luna arrived at The Horse Trust on Tuesday (31 March) to enjoy her well-earned retirement with a herd including her former Thames Valley Police (TVP) colleague Atlas.

Luna’s rider Heidi Cornick of the TVP mounted branch went to the charity’s Buckinghamshire base to see her partner settle in, which she told H&H was an emotional occasion

“She was honestly my best friend at work,” she said. “You know they’re going to be happy, and she already was by the time we left, but I’ve walked past her stable since and it’s empty. They deserve a proper retirement but you miss them.”

Police Horse Luna, a 17-year-old Normandy cob, became Sergeant Cornick’s partner when the latter joined the TVP mounted branch some two and a half years ago.

“She was very much one of the horses newer people started on, because she’s very kind and would look after you but also you had to work hard, you had to ask her nicely to do things, because if she didn’t want to do it, she would tell you,” Sergeant Cornick said.

“I remember riding her round Portsmouth once, and she – I say, pretended because it was very much a pretence – pretended she was scared of public benches. I was saying ‘Luna, you’ve walked past no less than a million public benches in your career’. And she was ‘Not today, Heidi, nope’. She’d keep us on our toes, but genuinely always looked after her rider. She was so kind and honest.”

Sergeant Cornick said Heidi excelled in all areas of her career; she was steadfast in high-pressure situations including the violence that broke out before a Legia Warsaw v Aston Villa football match in 2023 and was part of state visits and occasions including The late Queen’s final journey and escorting the Royal Family at Royal Ascot every year.

“The horses are involved in three main things. They do community box patrols, because the horses have this phenomenal ability to go into any community and break down barriers and have positive interactions. She was wonderful for those; my little girl ended up loving Luna because she would be so kind, so soft and gentle with children.

“Luna was just so good with the children, so she used to do all our school talks and community engagement, but equally, she’d do all our higher-risk events where she kept the public safe.”

Sergeant Cornick said the relationship between police horse and officer, especially in high-pressure situations, is best described as “extreme trust”.

“I’m asking her, in sometimes quite scary situations, to go forward to keep the public safe,” she said. “She knows I’m going to look after her and equally, I know she’s going to look after me. And that sort of trust and relationship, which we spend time building, is so important because it’s what looks after you and gets both of us home safe at the end of the day.”

Luna hit headlines last year when she was photographed wearing her special sunglasses to protect her eyes as she had equine recurrent uveitis. Sergeant Cornick said people came to ask about them every day.

“We used to call them her special Neigh-Bans and people loved that,” she said. “Whenever she wore them, people came up; they were one of those extra things that broke down barriers.

“Even in quite high-risk public order situations, if you ask someone to do something while you’re on a horse, they do it. So as police, we have to use an awful lot less force when we’re on horseback because people actually comply with what we’re asking them to do. They probably seem quite an antiquated policing technique but they’re so relevant in today’s world.”

Sergeant Cornick said the decision was made to remove one of Luna’s eyes owing to the uveitis, and the surgery was carried out in February.

“It sounds silly, because I knew she’d be absolutely fine, and the day after the surgery, she was settled straight away,” Sergeant Cornick said. “It didn’t take her long to recover but I wanted her to go to the Horse Trust feeling 100% so she could be the dominant queen she is, and head of her herd. So I gave her extra long!

“She was very opinioned, always told us what she wanted. She had a heart of gold and was so honest, would do anything you asked but she’d test you. She’d make sure you asked correctly and looked after her but as long as she did, she’d give you heaven and earth. I know there may be another Luna – but I don’t think there will. She’s one of a kind.”

A TVP spokesperson added: “For 12 extraordinary years, Police Horse Luna has served Thames Valley and Hampshire Police with unmatched bravery, professionalism, and heart. As Luna completes her service and enters many happy years of retirement at The Horse Trust she leaves behind a legacy defined by exceptional courage, unwavering dedication, and a rare elegance that set her apart. It has been an honour to work alongside her.”

Horse Trust chief executive Jeanette Allen told H&H: “We’re thrilled to have local hero Luna come to us for her retirement. She’s a stunning girl who may have lost an eye but has gained a life free from goggles! We’re always proud to care for Thames Valley’s police horses when they retire and Luna has settled in beautifully already.”

‘People’s response has been phenomenal’: new police horses help educate drivers

A new mounted police unit has been helping spread important safety advice to drivers on how to pass horses on the road.

West Midlands Police’s mounted section – re-established December after a 26-year break – has had a “busy first two months” across the region. The force’s four horses have helped search for missing children in Walsall, carried out anti-drug dealing patrols in Sandwell, targeted illegal e-bike riders in Birmingham, patrolled Wolverhampton city centre, protected football fans in Coventry and more.

The unit has also supported local crime reduction initiatives and other police forces with operations in their area, generating income to help fund the horses.

Sergeant Alex Hadley of the mounted unit said “people’s response to us has been phenomenal” said sergeant Alex Hadley from the West Midlands mounted unit.

“They’ve been so happy to see the horses and to speak to our officers who’ve been explaining the ways in which we’ll be using the horses in their area,” he said.

The section has also been “reminding hundreds of motorists” what to do when they see horses on the road.

“This includes sharing safety advice with the region’s bus companies along with council gritters and bin lorry drivers,” said sergeant Hadley.

“From speaking to hundreds of drivers, it’s clear that many motorists have never seen horses on the road, so are unsure how to respond correctly.”

He added that the aim is to “engage and educate drivers first”.

“But we will always enforce the law when safety is compromised. That can be public safety or the safety of our horses and riders,” said sergeant Hadley.

“We’re thankful to those who are following the rules and doing everything they can to prevent injuries. This includes bus drivers and council staff.”

A spokesperson for the force added that mounted unit officers have the same powers and equipment as officers on foot or in cars.

“This includes personal protective equipment, incapacitant spray, bodyworn video for recording evidence and radios for tracking their location and co-ordinating their response to an incident,” he said.

British Horse Society director of safety Alan Hiscox said while the society appreciates those who follow the Highway Code guidance, “there is still significant work to be done” to ensure the safety of all road users.

“Alongside working with key stakeholders such as the new West Midlands mounted unit, which is playing a very positive role in improving safety and understanding around horses on the road, we also encourage anyone involved in or witnessing an incident to record it via the Horse i app. This helps us to build a clear picture to drive positive change,” he said.

‘Excellent for increasing trust and confidence’: police welcome horses’ return after 26 years

Police horses have returned to the West Midlands after a 26-year break, in a move aimed at creating jobs and contributing to public trust and confidence.

This month West Midlands Police launched its new mounted section as the first five horses began patrols. The unit will comprise two sergeants and 12 constables; seven other fully trained police horses have been identified and are “undergoing extensive health checks” before moving to the region.

The news follows the announcement in March that Gloucestershire Constabulary’s mounted section would close, as part of plans to save £12.3m over 12 months. One of Gloucestershire’s horses, Bruce, has transferred to West Midlands Police. H&H has asked Gloucestershire Constabulary where the remaining five horses have moved to.

West Midlands Police assistant chief constable Mike O’Hara said it is a “moment in history for West Midlands” as horses are welcomed back to the region. The unit was disbanded in 1999.

“We have been working on this project for over a year and the plans have been carefully considered. We are confident that our mounted unit will generate income from loaning the horses to other forces and in support of this work, we’re also exploring sponsorship options that could help cover food and other expenses,” he said.

Mr O’Hara added that jobs for both police officers and staff have been created as part of the plans. The horses are staying in temporary homes around the region until the unit’s new stable Tally Ho!, in Edgbaston, Birmingham, opens in spring, which will be run by an equine stable manager, police staff grooms and an apprentice groom.

The horses will be involved in routine local policing and “ultra-high visibility patrols” at major events and weekends in town centres.

“Our recent experience at football matches has shown that just six police horses can manage crowds that usually take one police support unit equalling over 20 police officers. This means those highly skilled officers can be assigned to other roles, actively preventing and investigating crime or supporting victims,” said a West Midlands Police spokesperson.

“More importantly, we have taken learning from other forces, and this has helped us to understand that horses are an excellent tool in increasing trust and confidence. They have been used to great effect when supporting victims and witnesses and for getting people to engage and talk to us.”

Mr O’Hara said West Midlands Police is “really grateful for the help and advice” from World Horse Welfare, which has helped “ensure that our working animals will be well cared for, right from the start”.

A World Horse Welfare spokesperson told H&H police horses are “one of many examples of the horse-human relationship in action”.

“We believe that their safety and wellbeing should be a top priority, so we welcomed West Midlands Police approaching us for advice when they were first looking to bring horses back into their force,” he said.

“We look forward to engaging with them further to help them ensure that their newest recruits will thrive in their new home.”

Could your horse help keep people safe? Police mounted unit is on the hunt for new recruits

Riders looking for a new home – whether selling or loaning – for horses of a certain type are asked to consider whether a future career as a police horse could be the right fit for their equines.

Following the retirement of PH Hexam, who won an award for bravery in his 13-year career (pictured), the Greater Manchester Police (GMP) mounted branch is seeking new equine recruits.

“GMP’s mounted unit is on the lookout for suitable horses to join the team – and we need your help!” a spokesperson for the force said.

“If you or someone you know has a horse that meets the criteria, we’d love to hear from you. The unit is open to purchase or loan arrangements for both operational horses and training horses.”

The unit is looking for horses aged from six to 12, depending on breed, temperament and experience; younger animals may be considered. They must be over 16.2hh, draught breeds or part-breds, preferably geldings, with experience hacking and located within 100 miles of GMP.

“We also require horses for officer training and are happy to consider short-term or long-term loans or purchase,” the spokesperson said.

These horses can be mares or geldings, aged six to 13 and over 16hh, breeding such as part-bred Irish Draught. They must be suitable for novice riders, able to walk, trot and canter in balance and jump a small fence, sound, fit and good to deal with on the ground.

Sergeant Kerry Dawson of the GMP mounted unit, told H&H a police horse and rider can do the job of 10 or more officers.

“They have such an impact,” she said. “And as riders, we come away extremely proud of what they’ve done.

“And if you’re just walking down the street, no one stops to say hello. I forget sometimes I’m not on a horse, say hi, and people just look at you. If you’re on a horse waving, everybody wants to wave back. They’ll come over and speak to you, and that’s just because of the horses. They draw people to you that wouldn’t necessarily come and speak to you normally.”

The spokesperson added: “Your help could make a huge difference in supporting our officers and keeping our mounted unit strong!”

‘Loved by everyone’: police horse who stood firm under fire and won national bravery award retires to live with his vet

A police horse who stood firm in the face of fire, won a national award for bravery – and was “loved by everyone” – is enjoying a well-earned retirement with the vet who looked after him during his service.

PH Hexam, from the Greater Manchester Police mounted branch, has retired aged 17 into the care of Simon Constable, of Simon Constable’s Equine Vets. Hexam will live with Simon’s Arabs and ponies, and enjoy hacking and time in the field.

“I’ve got two young girls, seven and four, and needed a safe horse to hack with them – and I couldn’t ask for better,” Mr Constable told H&H.

“I’ve hacked him out already; he’s brilliant, he’s loving it, and I love it. If only they could talk, and tell you what they’ve experienced.”

Hexam joined the mounted branch as a four-year-old, and sergeant Kerry Dawson knew him from the start.

“He loved his food and treats!” she told H&H. “He was a confidence giver. He was a sergeant’s horse because he was so reliable. He would introduce new mounted officers to their role, and accompany new horses in training because of how confident he was.

“He was cheeky, he loved being turned out, and he was one of the grooms’ favourites to ride. But personally, for me and Laura, the other sergeant, he was always the one you’d choose for any big event because he was so reliable.”

Sergeant Dawson said Hexam was always confident, even when confronted with scenes such as the disorder at a Manchester United-Liverpool football match at Old Trafford in 2016. At the time, mounted officer Cara Charlesworth described the “chaos” as smoke bombs and fireworks were hurled at the police and horses – but Hexam and his colleagues Tangle and Captain stood firm. The three horses were named public service animals of the year at the Animal Hero Awards that year.

“It was a an extremely high level of disorder, with bangers and firecrackers and things being thrown, and the horses went into that, and pushed them all back to prevent disorder between home and away fans,” Sergeant Dawson said.

“Hexam was very very trusting of his rider, and because of that, he would have the confidence to do what the rider would ask of him, which is to protect the public and look after us as well. You knew you were safe when you when you were riding him.”

The mounted unit also won the GMP star award that year, for the same incident, and Hexam was also invited to Horse of the Year Show in recognition.

“It was lovely,” Sergeant Dawson said.

Hexam was also on duty during the riots in Bolton last year, helped other forces in times of need and led the team bus in homecoming parades for large football clubs, such as Manchester City’s winning the treble last year. Ceremonial occasions, concerts and football matches were all part of a day’s work.

But age was creeping up, and the mounted branch decided Hexam’s 13 years’ service would come to an end.

“They deserve a good retirement, so that was the decision,” Sergeant Dawson said. “I think the list would have been endless of people watching him, but Simon can deal with his issues, he knows him, he’s treated him and he’s nearby as well. So we can always go and see him, which is nice.

“He was loved by everyone. We will greatly miss him; everyone here, but we’re just happy he’s having a good retirement, which he deserves.”

Mr Constable added: “We couldn’t ask for better, and hopefully he couldn’t ask for better than with us.”

‘He went surrounded by love’: farewell to courageous police horse who served for 12 years

A much-loved police horse who served for 12 years will be remembered for his “courage, service, and spirit” by those who looked after him in retirement.

Sports horse gelding Caton joined Lancashire Constabulary as a five-year-old in 2006. He patrolled his first football match, a premier league game between Blackburn and Manchester United, in 2008 and went on to be involved in a number of high profile parades and events including the 2012 London Olympics and the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

“He was a natural leader, often at the front during large-scale events, and his talent and versatility shone through at open days, where he would jump through fire or perform in musical rides with confidence and flair,” said a Horse Trust spokesperson.

“He was, in every way, a true ambassador for the mounted unit.”

Caton retired to the Horse Trust in 2018, where he settled into a quieter life.

“Caton loved his comforts and could often be found heading back to bed for a nap after breakfast before getting on with his day,” said the spokesperson, adding that he formed a close bond with his companion “Gozza”.

“Their friendship was a constant throughout his retirement, and the pair were a familiar sight grazing or relaxing together in the fields,” said the Horse Trust spokesperson.

In recent months Caton “began to slow down, struggling increasingly with periods of lameness”.

“When it became clear that his comfort could no longer be maintained, the kindest decision was made to let him go peacefully, on a beautiful morning, surrounded by love,” said the spokesperson.

“Caton’s legacy is one of courage, service, and spirit. He served fearlessly, retired with dignity, and left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed by Gozza, our equine care team, and all those who held him in their hearts.

“Rest easy, Caton. Thank you for your service, your companionship, and your character.”

Up to 40 police horses to go as Met Police reduces mounted section to combat £260m funding gap

The Metropolitan Police is likely to lose nearly half of its horses, and over half its mounted officers, as the result of a “tough choice” needed to resolve a £260m funding gap.

The London force is proposing to reduce its mounted section by an estimated 69 officers and 10 staff – and up to 40 of its horses will be “retired, redeployed to other forces or suitably rehomed”. The Met is also proposing to close up to five of its stables, leaving at least two open.

A spokesperson for the force told H&H: “We’re prioritising resources and putting more officers on the beat in the busiest parts of London to focus on core policing priorities to protect the public and tackle areas with high crime.

“Due to our financial constraints, we’re making tough choices and one of those is to reduce the Met’s mounted branch. The Met continues to have the largest mounted branch in the country, who will focus on policing high crime areas and high-profile public order and ceremonial events.”

The Met has been in special measures since 2022, and a report last year found it was providing an inadequate or failing service in seven of nine key areas. Reduction to the size of the mounted branch had always been part of the plan to balance the budget.

The branch currently has 93 horses and 120 officers, plus 32 staff, at its sites in Bow, Hammersmith, West Hampstead, Lewisham, Great Scotland Yard, Hyde Park and Imber Court.

“The high vantage point and versatility of mounted branch officers make them a valued police resource,” the Met website states.

The proposals are the subject of formal trade union and staff consultations and internal communication started this month on how this will happen, supporting staff, officers and horses.

Police horse wows Royal Ascot in designer sunglasses: ‘People seem to love them!’

Anyone who’s been to Royal Ascot on a hot day like this week will know how tricky it is to get one’s look just right.

Among those who have managed it with aplomb this year is Luna, who’s there every day, accessorising her mainly leather-based style with the perfect pair of equine sunglasses.

Luna is a 16-year-old Norman cob, whose home for 12 years has been the Thames Valley Police mounted section. The 17hh mare has been on duty at Royal Ascot many times but this is to be her last before she retires.

“She suffers from uveitis,” a Thames Valley Police spokesperson told H&H. “She has the specialist sunglasses to filter out the UV light to protect her eyes.

“Her sunglasses are definitely a talking point and people seem to love them. She will be wearing them every day for Ascot for her own welfare.”

The spokesperson said the glasses are made especially for Luna. Uveitis is inflammation within the eye, termed equine recurrent uveitis when two or more episodes occur. Glasses protect the eyes from UV light, dust and any other sources of irritation.

Also on patrol at Ascot yesterday were Luna’s equine colleagues Mars, another 17hh chestnut Normandy cob, Morpheus, Harper, Viktor and Trinity. The mounted section’s duties include escorting the royal family on to the racecourse and patrolling to maintain order as a visible presence.

‘We wish him the very best’: much-loved ‘towering’ police horse retires to final home aged 20

A “towering” police horse known for his size, strength and gentleness, and the “vital role” he played in maintaining public order, has been making new friends as he starts his well-earned retirement.

Former Police Scotland recruit Inverness is settling in well at The Horse Trust, his final home, and the charity said it was delighted to welcome the 20-year-old Clydesdale.

“Over his remarkable 12-year career, Inverness supported Police Scotland at some of the highest-profile events in the country,” a spokesperson for the charity said. “From the 2014 Commonwealth Games, COP26 in Glasgow, and the Open Championship, to countless Old Firm and Edinburgh derby matches, he remained a calm and commanding presence in the crowd. He also played a vital role in maintaining public order during historic moments, such as the 2016 Scottish Cup Final at Hampden Park and the 2021 title celebrations in George Square following Rangers’ Scottish Premiership victory.”

Constable Claire Knowles, instructor and assessor with the Police Scotland mounted unit, said Inverness had had a full and varied career, partnering many riders.

“As well as his frontline duties, he helped train new officers – recruits will no doubt remember how he helped tone their core muscles!” she said. “He’s affectionate and quirky – he’ll be sorely missed, and we wish him the very best in retirement.”

The spokesperson said Inverness has settled in very well and is enjoying his new life.

“In a comical twist for a horse known to dislike the rain, he’s already making the most of the warmer southern weather,” she said. “He recently had a fresh clip to help him adjust to the unseasonably warm spring, standing patiently and clearly enjoying the extra attention from our team.”

Inverness has been reunited with fellow former Police Scotland horses Kilsyth and Edinburgh in a herd that also includes retirees from the Lancashire and City of London, and former English Heritage historical reenactment star Bob, who has become Inverness’s particular friend.

Horse Trust equine care officer Steven Grice said: “At 17.2hh, he’s certainly the tallest member of the group, and the others are still getting used to his towering presence.

“Sociable and curious, Inverness often strolls over during field checks and has even been lending a hoof to groom Ed as he cleaned out the water trough. We’re thrilled to have him here and look forward to seeing how he continues to settle in over time.”

Appeal for witnesses after dog attacks and injures two police horses on patrol

The Metropolitan Police is appealing for witnesses after two of its horses were attacked by a dog while on patrol.

Police Horse Yvonne, 13, and 15-year-old Police Horse Snaffles were attacked while out with Sergeant Leon Astley and PC Grace Miller-McCormack in Shepherd’s Bush, London, last Monday (28 April) at about 11.30am.

“The dog chased the horses and repeatedly made attempts to bite their legs while the owner struggled to get the pet back under control,” a police spokesperson said. “Members of the public ultimately had to step in to help detain the dog.

“Thankfully, Yvonne and Snaffles are recovering well at their stables with minor injuries and the officers were unharmed.”

Video footage shows the dog going for the horses, as both officers tell the owner to get it under control, and PC Miller-McCormack warns that the dog might get kicked by the horses.

Sergeant Astley said it should have been a routine patrol with PH Yvonne, who has been a police horse since October 2020, and PH Snaffles, who has previously been part of the police ride display at the London International Horse Show.

“But it turned out to be unexpectedly eventful, when our hardworking police horses were sadly injured in the course of their duty,” he said. “Fortunately Yvonne and Snaffles are recovering well and being looked after.

“We know horses are not a common sight in the capital but we urge all owners to keep their dogs under control to prevent this happening again.”

The spokesperson said no arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing. The dog was seized and later given back to its owner.

Anyone whose dog is seriously out of control can be jailed for up to six months or ordered to pay an unlimited fine, or both. If a person is injured, the jail term can be up to five years.

Any witnesses to the incident are asked to call 101 or contact @MetCC on X, quoting CAD2691/28APR25.

‘Our hearts have grown one horse bigger’ as equine police recruit chooses her own name

The Lancashire Police mounted section says its “hearts have grown one horse bigger”, thanks to its latest equine recruit – who has chosen her own police name.

A six-year-old Clydesdale formerly known as Blossom has been undergoing her training with the branch, and was officially named on 4 April. Many of the branch’s horses are named after places in Lancashire, so in keeping with this, the 16.3hh mare was offered the choice of three buckets of feed. These were labelled Whalley, Langho and Cottam and she chose Cottam.

A Lancashire Police spokesperson told H&H PH Cottam, who came from a home in Yorkshire where she enjoyed hacking, is very friendly and “great to have around”.

“She is progressing well through the early stages of her police training,” she added.

PH Cottam will continue her training, visiting different places in the county, “taking in all the sights and learning the ropes from our other esteemed equines”.

“Our hearts have grown one horse bigger,” the police spokesperson said.

“As she continues her training at our mounted division, our newest recruit received her ‘police name’ yesterday and as she’s described as ‘a mare who knows what she wants’, it was only right that we let her choose it herself.”

There are 16 horses in the Lancashire Police mounted branch; previously, the public has chosen some of their official names.

Police horses to move homes and 60 jobs to go as force targets £12.3m savings

The equine members of the Gloucestershire Constabulary mounted branch are to move to the West Midlands as the unit is to close – as the force aims to save £12.3m in the next year.

H&H reported in 2021 that the branch’s future was in doubt as the office of the police and crime commissioner (PCC) Chris Nelson had commissioned a review into its future. In December 2021, Mr Nelson backed the case to keep the mounted unit, which had six horses at the time.

But on Tuesday (25 March) the force set out new plans for “financial and organisational stability”.

“In Gloucestershire, we need to save £12.3m over the next 12 months,” a spokesperson said. “The force is taking decisive action, and there will be some difficult choices ahead.”

Temporary chief constable Maggie Blyth said: “Most importantly I want to reassure people that Gloucestershire Constabulary is protecting our frontline services, meeting the needs of all our communities and keeping them safe. Today I can give you that reassurance at a time when we’re also having to make some difficult decisions about how we use our limited resources.”

She added: “In an ideal world, we’d rather not make any redundancies but as a public service we must continually review how we spend our limited funds and make objective decisions to ensure our communities get value for money. We’ve shown what we can achieve through a consistent and focused approach to our budget by making £3.3m worth of savings in this financial year.

“Unfortunately, in addition to making up to 60 police staff posts redundant over the course of the year, we have also made the decision to transfer our mounted capability to West Midlands Police.

“The practical arrangements of this transfer are still being worked through to ensure this important and specialist resource is maintained across policing and is still available to us and others when they’re needed. Our mounted officers will be redeployed elsewhere in the constabulary.”

A spokesperson for the force told H&H West Midlands Police will appoint an independent vet to conduct health checks on the horses.

“The horses and their welfare are of paramount concern to the constabulary,” he said.

Heartbroken farewell to ‘beloved equine hero’ who led royal wedding, met stars and touched hearts

A former police horse who led the procession at Prince Harry’s wedding and was thanked for his work by Ed Sheeran – and was a “beloved companion, a true equine hero” – has died aged 23.

The Horse Trust confirmed that 17.2hh Irish draught gelding Rubin had succumbed to a “sudden and severe” bout of colic, after a happy retirement.

A spokesperson for the charity said Rubin joined South Wales Police aged four and became the mounted branch’s longest-serving equine recruit, “dedicating an incredible 14 years to the force”.

“He was widely regarded as one of their best and bravest, always leading by example and offering steady guidance to younger, less experienced horses,” the spokesperson said.

“A horse of many talents, Rubin played a key role in some of the most prestigious and high-profile events in recent history. He proudly led the procession at the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan, alongside fellow Horse Trust resident Samson, basking in the attention.”

Rubin was also on duty at the London Olympics, Royal Ascot, Six Nations rugby matches and a NATO conference, as well as many other community and ceremonial events.

“He even rubbed shoulders with the stars and was thanked in person by singer Ed Sheeran for policing his four nights at the Principality Stadium,” the spokesperson said. “Whether standing guard at an art display or providing reassurance in the heart of a bustling crowd, Rubin carried out his duties with unwavering courage and grace.

“In the later years of his career, Rubin became a trusted teacher, helping new and inexperienced riders find their confidence. Always dependable, always steady, he ensured those in his care felt safe. He was a true gentle giant, known for his affectionate nature, he loved his cuddles (or ‘cwtches’ as his Welsh teammates fondly called them) and would happily stand for hours being groomed by his two and four-legged friends alike.”

Rubin arrived at the Horse Trust in 2022 for a “well-earned retirement filled with love, care, and adoration from his devoted supporters”.

“He was a firm favourite at our open days, always eager to greet visitors with his signature warmth and charm,” the spokesperson said. “His passing, after a sudden and severe bout of colic, was a heartbreaking loss. Despite the very best efforts of our veterinary team, the prognosis for recovery was very poor, and the incredibly difficult decision was made to let him go peacefully.

“Rubin was not just a remarkable police horse, he was a beloved companion, a guardian, a teacher and a true equine hero. His legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched, and he will for ever be remembered with love, gratitude, and immense respect.

“Rest in peace, Rubin. We miss you already.”

‘Thank you for keeping us safe’: brave police horse who’s ‘master of the side-eye’ retires after distinguished career

A brave and dependable police horse, known for his distinctive markings and poker face – and being the “master of the side-eye” – has retired aged 17 after a distinguished career.

The South Wales Police mounted branch has paid tribute to Police Horse Drummer, a skewbald Irish Draught gelding, who is hanging up his tabard after seven years’ service.

A spokesperson for the force said PH Drummer was “one of the stars of the yard”, and that his distinctive markings including the “trademark star” on his neck made him one of the branch’s most recognisable horses.

“Drummer joined TeamSWP in the summer of 2018, at the age of 10,” the spokesperson said.

“He instantly fitted in and looked as if he was born to be a police horse.

“Within six months, he was part of the team at large sporting events, taking it all in his stride. Drummer has since been used to escort new horses on the team, helping to teach them the ropes, along with helping new riders with their training. He was always the steady horse we could depend on.

“Throughout his career he has been there and seen it all, he has been one of the bravest horses on the yard, often leading the way into any situation.”

PH Drummer’s service to the community included primary school visits and engagement events, but also royal visits and ceremonial duties, and policing protests, riots and high-level football and rugby matches.

“One of the highlights of his career is when he worked alongside the Household Cavalry, the King’s Troop and mounted colleagues from Thames Valley Police to assist with the celebrations for The late Queen’s birthday in Windsor, 2021,” the spokesperson said.

“Drummer’s quirky personality never gave much away and was often referred to as having a ‘poker face’, however his side-eye is something else – he was certainly the master of this!

“Drummer would always remind everyone on the yard when it was dinner time; he would kick the stable door, alerting us all to the fact that dinner should be being served.

“We have all had a lot of fun with Drummer over the years on the mounted section, he was a strong police horse with a massive heart, and we all have many fond memories of his time here.

“We would like to thank Drummer for his service, keeping us and our communities safe and wish him a very happy retirement! We know he is going to be very well looked after as he joins a familiar face – Keith, our horse dentist!”

A ‘real-life unicorn’: heartbroken farewell to ‘gentle giant’ former police horse aged 24

The Horse Trust has paid tribute to a courageous “gentle giant” and “real-life unicorn” former police horse, who has died at the age of 24.

The charity said it was heartbroken to confirm that it had had to let 18.2hh Samson go, owing to health issues, after an afternoon’s grazing and “surrounded with love”.

“A towering grey gelding, Samson was a gentle giant who brought light, laughter, and unforgettable memories to all who knew him, in particular his wonderful sponsors who followed him throughout his retirement,” a spokesperson for the charity said.

Samson was originally part of a falconry display team in Hampshire, where “his calm nature and majestic presence made him a crowd favourite”.

Aged 12, he joined Thames Valley Police, where he earned a reputation for courage and reliability. Within six months, he was on duty at major football matches and escorting The late Queen at Royal Ascot. He also took part in ceremonial parades, school visits, and search patrols for missing persons.

“His courage shone during a violent demonstration in Brighton, where the horses and officers involved received a commendation for bravery,” the spokesperson said. “Despite the rigours of his duties, Samson’s charismatic side often shone through. Every morning, before patrol or a big event, he needed a thorough wash – typical of a grey, he made sure he got as muddy as possible!

“He was lovingly nicknamed Sammy Sausage by his colleagues, a name that accompanied him into retirement in 2017.”

PC Webb, who rode Samson, said at the time: “He was used to crowds and settled into the situation really quickly, he soon became one of our best horses — he was Mr Reliable.”

Samson joined Caesar, another former Thames Valley Police horse, in retirement, and found a new “girlfriend”, Rosalind.

“Samson’s most iconic friendship however, was with Alf, a former Cleveland Police horse,” the spokesperson said. “The pair were inseparable, sharing a bond and Labrador-like traits that brought endless joy to those around them. Together, they were often the source of hilarious escapades, such as dismantling a trough and flooding the barn (twice!) in what can only be described as a spirited game of mischief.

“Samson’s personality made him a firm favourite among supporters, and he regularly featured in our ‘Tongue Out Tuesday’ posts, showcasing his impressively long tongue. Over the years, he became a treasured sponsor horse, helping to connect supporters with our mission to provide gold-standard care for equine heroes. He was always a big hit with visitors.”

But Samson’s health started to decline late last year. His arthritis, which had been manageable, worsened, and as he also had PPID (Cushing’s), he did not heal as well as other horses.

“Despite the efforts of our veterinary and equine care teams, his condition sadly did not improve,” the spokesperson said. “After an afternoon spent grazing and being thoroughly spoiled by the team, the kindest decision was made to let him go peacefully, surrounded by love.”

PC Webb said the mounted section was “deeply saddened”.

“But we find comfort in the fact that he was able to enjoy a long and happy retirement with The Horse Trust who cared for him so well,” he said. “During his career, Samson and I soon built a solid partnership and he was the first to come and sniff my pockets for his favourite treat, a Bourbon biscuit! He had a cheeky personality, loved to stick his tongue out for photos and was a great escape artist. Rest in peace, Samson, you were our real-life unicorn and will be missed.”

Horse Trust chief executive Jeanette Allen said the farm already feels different without Samson.

“Life without Samson will take some big adjustments,” she said. “No other 18.2hh horse would have stood so patiently in their stable for two months as he did when recovering from a fractured leg. This is just one example of Samson’s immense kindness, patience, and gentle spirit. He will be deeply missed.

“Samson’s name, derived from the word for sun, is a fitting tribute to the warmth, strength and radiance he brought into all our lives. He was a horse of many talents, with a career of falconry displays, police work, followed by a joyful retirement filled with beautiful friendships and a lot of fun. He leaves behind a legacy of courage, kindness, and countless fond memories. We will be keeping a close eye on Alf in the coming weeks after the loss of his best pal.

“Rest in peace, Samson, our ‘big friendly giant’, You will for ever be missed but never forgotten.”

Farewell to police horse whose ‘noble spirit left a mark on all’

The Horse Trust has paid tribute to one of its long-term equine residents, described as a “true partner, friend and hero”, who has died aged 26.

Hadrian retired to the charity’s Buckinghamshire base in 2012 after eight years’ service with the Metropolitan Police.

The gelding, also known as “The Nose” owing to his “strong Roman nose”, participated in all the force’s routine tasks, including public order work, football matches and ceremonial duties. Some of Hadrian’s high-profile events included policing the G8 summit, New Year’s Eve celebrations and FA Cup finals.

A Horse Trust spokesperson said Hadrian served his community with “unwavering strength and loyalty” and was a “cherished presence”.

“Whether on duty in the city or in the quieter moments of rest, Hadrian’s calm demeanour and noble spirit left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him,” he said.

Hadrian first visited the Horse Trust for a period of rest following a lameness issue, but when it was deemed he should retire, he took up full residence at the charity in 2012.

“He enjoyed his well-earned days of peace and care, bringing joy to those around him with his gentle nature and unshakeable warmth,” said the spokesperson.

Hadrian had chronic lameness conditions which were managed by the Horse Trust’s veterinary team, but these deteriorated.

“Recently, it was noted that Hadrian was starting to struggle to get around and he was already receiving maximum pain medication and treatments. Therefore, it was the kindest decision to let Hadrian go peacefully and be free from pain,” said the spokesperson.

“Having been with us for 12 years, his loss is deeply felt by all who worked with him and loved him. He was not just a horse; he was a true partner, a friend, and a hero who will always be remembered with fondness and respect.”

‘The best boy’: 18.2hh police horse who stole hearts in TV interview arrives at his forever home

An 18.2hh police horse who loves bananas and chin scratches – and is “the best boy” – has arrived at his last home to enjoy a well-earned retirement.

H&H reported in June that Thames Valley Police (TVP) stalwart Atlas, who led The late Queen’s funeral procession, was to be on patrol at the final Royal Ascot of his seven-year career.

The 14-year-old is bowing out owing to arthritis and soundness issues, to enjoy the “love, care, and relaxation that he deserves”, a Horse Trust spokesperson said, adding: “It was an emotional day as his colleagues from TVP said their heartfelt goodbyes, while Atlas met his new companions at our Home of Rest for Horses.”

The spokesperson said Atlas had been a “towering and reassuring presence” at TVP since his arrival in 2017. He was on duty at Prince Philip’s funeral, The King’s coronation and the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, as well as “serving tirelessly at football matches, protests and on joint operations”.

“The bond between Atlas and his former team is second to none,” the charity spokesperson said. “Atlas was cared for by his former rider, James Metcalf, while awaiting a space at The Horse Trust. James, with five fellow officers who had shared the honour of riding Atlas over the years, accompanied him to his new home in Buckinghamshire, each reflecting on the special moments they shared with him.”

James said Atlas was a “true gentle giant”.

“He’s best friends with fellow TVP horse Odin,” he said. “He’s got a love for bananas, chin scratches, and his massage pad—he’s the best boy.”

Atlas won hearts this year when he featured in what should have been a “serious interview” with James – but stole the show, trying to eat the microphone and asking for attention from the officer.

“Known for his playful and curious nature, Atlas always succeeded in keeping his colleagues entertained, especially PC Metcalf, with whom he shared a heartwarming interview ahead of Ascot,” the spokesperson said. “The bloopers generated a lot of engagement from his supporters, as Atlas took a keen interest in the microphone! Despite his size, Atlas’s labrador-like affection endeared him to everyone he met, both on and off duty.”

Atlas will live with former TVP colleagues including Trojan, and Rubin and Samson, whom he knew during his career.

“We are honoured to welcome this remarkable horse into our care,” said Horse Trust CEO Jeanette Allen. “Atlas has touched the lives of so many through his dedicated service, and he has already captured the hearts of our team. We look forward to providing him with the love, care, and peaceful retirement he so deserves.”

‘He won’t go anywhere now’: former police horse reunited with owner who bottle-fed him as a foal

A one-tonne Percheron police horse who has retired after a distinguished career will spend the rest of his life with the woman who bottle-fed him as a foal – thanks to a post on Facebook.

H&H reported in February that Police Horse Putney had helped arrest a man carrying a knife, in what was to have been the last week of his 12 years with the Metropolitan Police.

The H&H article was shared in a Percheron Facebook group, where Alison Gardner saw it, and realised PH Putney was the foal she had known as Boris, 17 years ago. Having spoken to the Met, Alison finally welcomed Boris home on 31 July.

“It’s lovely, but it hasn’t quite sunk in yet,” Alison told H&H. ‘It’s awesome to have him home.”

Alison explained that she and her former partner bought Boris’s dam while she was carrying him, and his sire.

“His mum had just foaled, and everything was fine, and we left them for half an hour,” she said. “When we came back, his mum had died, she’d haemorrhaged internally.

“So we bottle-fed Boris; I used to sit up with him every night.”

Boris moved quickly on to a bucket, and at four months old, Alison and her partner tried to put him with the other mares and foals.

“But he just wouldn’t integrate with them,” she said. “He’d hear us talking and come through all the electric fence to get to us. I don’t play with bottle-fed foals but I used to sit with him so he had company. But he got used to it.”

When Boris was two, Alison was working with him on the ground, but her situation changed when she and her partner split up.

“I moved away, the horses got sold and I never knew what happened to them,” she said. “I was devastated but it was a messy situation and I just had to leave them behind.”

It was 15 years later that Anne Marshall saw the H&H post and shared it to her group. Alison did not realise PH Putney was Boris until she realised from comments that Anne had had Boris’s dam, Eltra Bella, as a young horse.

“She said ‘This is Edlingtons Boris’,” Alison said. “I hadn’t seen him, didn’t know what had happened to him; it was a real blast from the past. Anne messaged to say she’d been going to take him on as she’s got his half-brother but did I want to take him.

“I’ve got a livery yard and had three horses so I didn’t need another one but it was Boris; I couldn’t say no. And that was it; he’s come back.”

Anne contacted the Met, and the force was agreeable for Boris to go back to Alison. There were delays as he was unexpectedly called back into service, taking part in Trooping the Colour and on duty at Royal Ascot, but he was then officially retired, and delivered to Alison.

“He came in a huge great lorry, with a driver and a lady called Susie, and I told them ‘I am going to cry’, and I did!” Alison said. “It was awesome, seeing him again for the first time in so long.

“I’d forgotten how big Percherons are; he’s about 17.3hh but everything about him is just huge.”

Boris is now happily settled in the home he will spend the rest of his life in; Alison said he will come in and go out with the others and be ridden now and again.

“I took him round the village that Saturday and it was awesome,” she said. “All the sights and sounds were nothing to him after what he’s seen in the police. He enjoyed it and everyone who saw him was a bit blown away by this monstrous horse.”

Alison said Boris has already accumulated a fan club at the yard.

“It’s strange as I haven’t seen him since he was two but the things he does haven’t changed,” she said. “Little things like when he was a baby, after he’d drunk his milk, he’d lick the doorframe. I gave him some nuts the other day and afterwards, he went straight to the doorframe and started licking it. This great big walloping horse, who’s done 12 years with the Met, and nothing has changed; he’s still licking doorframes!

“I don’t know if he remembers me or not; maybe he recognises my voice, but I’d like to think he remembers me. He watches me and ‘talks’ to me, and his nostrils go so maybe he does. I was his ‘mum’, after all!

“It’s lovely to have him back and he won’t want for anything. He’s home and he won’t go anywhere now.”

‘He loves his job’: police horse hit by car back on the beat – as drivers warned about safe passing

A 17.3hh part-Clydesdale police horse who “loves his job” is back on the beat, three months after he was injured in a collision with a car while on patrol.

Police Horse Ledston, part of the West Yorkshire Police mounted section, has made a full recovery after the incident on 1 March.

Police Constable Helen Jackson said that at 19, PH Ledston is one of the unit’s longest-serving equine members, and he will retire next year.

“We’ve had him since he was four so his whole life has been the police, and he loves his job,” she said. “He loves to work, he loves to go out; he’s a very active boy for his age.”

PC Jackson said the incident in March occurred when a car passed too close and caught PH Ledston’s hindquarters. He has since had extensive physio and rehab.

“It could have been a lot worse but luckily he was just a bit stiff,” she said. “He’s been doing a bit of school work, and started going back out with another police horse, and now he’s happy to be back out on his own.”

The driver of the vehicle was required to attend a National Driver Offender Retraining Scheme educational course as a result of the collision.

Chief Inspector James Farrar said: “I’m delighted to see Ledston has made a full recovery and has returned to duty.

“The collision he was involved in could have resulted in serious injuries or even worse for Ledston, his rider and other road users and it demonstrates the caution all motorists need to take when passing horses.

“I’d urge all motorists to follow the Highway Code and slow right down and give all horses a wide berth of at least two metres when passing them. Avoid any actions likely to spook a horse such as splashing them or sounding your horn, and accelerate gently once you’ve passed.

“Remember, not all horses and riders will be as experienced in traffic as our police horse and riders are.”

‘We’re thrilled to have you’: brave police horse officially retired after ‘remarkable’ career

A police horse of “unparalleled bravery” has retired with all due ceremony after a career that was “nothing short of remarkable”.

Oliver, formerly of the Metropolitan Police mounted unit, was officially retired, aged 18, at The Horse Trust, during its annual fundraising Horses, Hounds and Heroes event. He will enjoy a “restful and relaxing retirement, full of the love he so richly deserves”.

The 17.1hh Irish draught gelding started his career with the Met in 2011.

“Oliver’s tenure with the Met Police has been nothing short of remarkable,” said a spokesperson for The Horse Trust.

“As a natural leader, he has been an integral part of numerous high-profile and prestigious events. He has been a guiding force for novice riders, providing them with the confidence and skills needed to excel. Senior officers have frequently relied on Oliver for his steadfastness and reliability, especially during public order and ceremonial events. His bravery is unparalleled, as he has fearlessly protected crowds during various football matches, rugby tournaments, music concerts, protests, and marches across Greater London.”

Oliver also took part in royal ceremonial events, including the funerals of The late Queen and Baroness Thatcher, the Notting Hill Carnival and the Commonwealth Games procession.

“Ridden by esteemed figures such as ex-commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe and senior officers during the Lord Mayor’s Show in 2023, Oliver’s presence has been a mark of honour and excellence,” the spokesperson said.

“Oliver is truly a horse full of character. His loving nature towards people and his fondness for affection make him a beloved companion. Known for his keen interest in people and exceptional ability to search for food and treats, Oliver’s personality shines brightly. His bravery is complemented by his calm demeanour, as he remains unbothered in the face of potential challenges. While he sometimes doesn’t know his own size, he remained polite and very well-mannered, making him a delight to work around.”

Horse Trust chief executive Jeanette Allen said it was a privilege to take Oliver in his retirement.

“To see him led in, looking stunning, escorted by the newest generation of Metropolitan Police horses was truly moving,” she said. “Having his saddle removed for the final time, in front of the crowd, was a very special and highly emotional moment for the Met mounted section and for all of us. He has immense presence, and we are thrilled to now going this very special boy to our herd here. Happy retirement Oliver, we are thrilled to have you.”

Meet Andy, aka Police Horse Thomson, the newest official member of the City of London Police mounted branch, who loves a scratch – and boasts some fabulous feather.

The 14-year-old Clydesdale, known as Andy to his friends, has completed his training so has been officially renamed in a special ceremony.

A spokesperson for the police told H&H PH Thomson was at an equestrian centre in Penrith that closed, after which he was turned away. He arrived at the mounted branch last February and has since undergone a full training programme including troop drill and practice in “challenging environments”.

“Andy has made great progress, is now in the peak of health and has just completed his training and is a fully fledged police horse,” the spokesperson said.

“He is a very gentle horse who adores a scratch and will pull some wonderful expressions to signify when you have got just the right spot.”

The spokesperson added that PH Thomson is unique in police horses as he has retained his feather – and that this has already won him many fans.

“They look majestic but require much maintenance and pampering,” she said. “They have been retained due to his previous life and common conditions associated with Clydesdales.

“The feathers are very popular with the public and have earned him a huge following on our mounted branch X account, @Cityhorses, with #followthefeathers.”

Andy has been officially named after former chair and current deputy of the City of London Police Authority board James Thomson; other members of the branch have been named after historically significant city sites or public figures.

Sergeant Joanna Brown of the City of London Police mounted branch said: “This is a special occasion for the mounted branch, it celebrates the hard work and determination in training the horses and the commitment from the trainers and the wider team.

“We are naming this horse PH Thomson in recognition of James Thomson, who has been a vocal supporter of our department. His interest in raising our profile and sharing what police horse bring to the Square Mile has been vitally important.”

Mr Thomson said he was “honoured and humbled” to have Andy named after him.

“The City of London Police mounted unit plays an important role in keeping the Square Mile one of the safest business districts in the world,” he said.

“I am delighted that PH Thomson will be joining the team and I look forward to seeing them out on patrol.”

‘There will never be another Parker’: brave, loving – and chip-stealing – former police horse dies aged 22

A “steadfast, loving and brave” police horse who enjoyed an “exceptional” career – and was not averse to stealing football fans’ chips – has died after a happy retirement.

Former Greater Manchester Police (GMP) mounted branch stalwart Parker has had to be put down at The Horse Trust aged 22, “giving him the dignified end that all those equines who have served the community so bravely deserve”.

A spokesperson for the charity said that Police Horse Parker, “affectionately also known as Piggy due to his high-pitched, squealing whinny”, spent over half of his life serving his community as part of the GMP mounted unit.

“Initially given to GMP in 2012 on loan for five years from his owner, Parker was an instant hit with the officers and public alike, due to his cheeky nature and eccentric, one-of-a-kind squeal,” the spokesperson said. “After those five years, he was returned to his owner but it was clear ‘civilian’ life was no longer for him, and after a mere two weeks he was gifted to GMP’s mounted unit as a permanent police horse.

“Despite being the smallest horse at the mounted unit, he made up for it in bravery and character. From the start of his career, it was obvious he was born to be a police horse and loved his job. Parker led an exceptional career, being involved in most, if not all, of the notable events that have occurred within GMP over the past decade.”

PH Parker was on duty at major football games, tournaments and parades.

“He has led masses of European football fans in walk-downs from the city centre to Old Trafford and the Etihad, on occasion with industrial fireworks crackling behind him,” the spokesperson said.

“Parker was one of the most loved and recognised horses at the GMP mounted unit. Full of character and charm, Parker had been known to steal chips from the forks of many a football fan when they came too close bearing food and regularly liked to check people’s pockets for any forgotten sweets.”

PH Parker retired to The Horse Trust in September 2022 owing to his arthritis. He settled straight in, the spokesperson said, enjoying grazing with his fieldmates.

“Last winter, Parker sustained an eye injury for which he had cutting edge treatment, including trialling a contact lens to protect his eye,” the spokesperson said. “Whilst this treatment was a success, unfortunately Parker’s arthritis continued to deteriorate and his stiffness was noted to be worsening by our wonderful grooms who keep such a close eye on all our residents. The level of stiffness Parker was exhibiting despite his daily pain relief was a serious concern for his quality of life. Therefore, after evaluation, we made the sad decision to put Parker to sleep, giving him the dignified end that all those equines who have served the community so bravely deserve.

“A wonderful horse full of zeal and charm with an amazing legacy working for Greater Manchester Police, Parker, you were an utter sweetheart, one of the friendliest we’ve ever had and we are proud to have cared for you in your final years. Goodnight, PH Parker.”

On his retirement, GMP thanked Parker for his outstanding service.

“Our cheeky, loving, steadfast, brave boy Parker,” the force said at the time. “No quote rings more true than the words ‘horse of a lifetime’ when it comes to you. Not many horses have this kind of impact on people. There will NEVER be another Parker, ever.”

‘A complete gentleman’: speedy 18.2hh police horse enjoys his last Royal Ascot before well-earned retirement

A speedy 18.2hh police horse is on duty at his last Royal Ascot this week, as he prepares to retire after seven years of “distinguished service”.

Thames Valley Police mounted section stalwart Atlas was to be part of the procession along the racecourse this week, escorting members of the royal family and their guests to the royal box. His career is being “brought to a close” this summer.

“Post-procession, he will be handing over the reins to the rest of the team, who will be carrying out high-visibility reassurance patrols in and around the areas of Ascot racecourse, throughout the day and into the evening,” a Thames Valley Police spokesperson said.

“This historic event will be PH Atlas’s last major deployment for the force before he retires.”

Atlas, who joined the force in 2017 aged seven, has helped police many historic events, including the funerals of The late Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, the coronation of King Charles and the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

“He has been on duty at countless football matches, protests and high-visibility patrol work across the Thames Valley,” the spokesperson said. “He has also been involved in many operations, jobs, events and patrols as part of our joint operations unit with Hampshire and the Isle of Wight Constabulary, ensuring the safety of communities across the county.

“Atlas’ height advantage and his exceptional speed helps to assist officers with pursuing offenders if required.”

Atlas is to start his retirement with the mounted section team while he waits for a place at The Horse Trust.

PC James Metcalf will be riding Atlas on his final duties.

“I’m incredibly lucky to have Atlas as my commander’s horse for this year’s Royal Ascot,” he said. “He is a complete gentleman who will be sorely missed by myself and the entire mounted section team when he begins his retirement.

“Atlas has definitely earned himself a well-deserved rest following his years of unflinching service.”

Final farewell to ‘courageous’ police horse with ‘distinctively big ears’

Tributes have been paid to a police horse with “distinctive big ears and loveable personality”, who has died in retirement aged 22.

Part-bred Irish draught Loxley began his police career with Nottinghamshire Constabulary mounted unit. When the unit disbanded in 2012, the 16.2hh “courageous” gelding was bought by Greater Manchester Police (GMP).

During his time with GMP Loxley worked in all aspects of the mounted unit, including at Manchester derby football matches, parades and demonstrations, and community events.

Loxley developed arthritis in his hocks and was unable to continue in patrol work, and in 2016 he was retired to the Horse Trust, Buckinghamshire.

“We were thrilled to give Loxley a place to retire in comfort after his service to two police forces,” said a Horse Trust spokesman.

“An amiable and gentle chap, Loxley fitted straight in with our herd of golden oldies and spent most of his time out in our fields enjoying grazing and hanging out with his friends.”

Horse Trust staff noticed Loxley was “not quite himself” and was showing signs indicative of pneumonia. He received veterinary care and although he responded to initial treatment, a scan showed that one of his lungs had several masses that were “unlikely to be treatable”.

“This meant that the only choice was to give Loxley a pain-free and comfortable passing to avoid him suffering,” said the spokesman.

The spokesman added that the charity “won’t feel the same” without Loxley’s “distinctively big ears and utterly loveable personality”.

“We find solace in knowing he is now galloping pain-free over the rainbow bridges, towards greener pastures. Rest in peace Loxley,” said the spokesman.

‘Not a dry eye’ as 12 ‘extraordinary’ horses retire together for rest, carrots and plenty of scratches

The rider of a Household Cavalry horse travelled with him for eight hours on their last journey together – as 12 “extraordinary” service horses made an emotional joint retirement.

The Horse Trust’s Home of Rest welcomed nine horses from the Household Cavalry, two from the police and one from the Light Dragoons on the same morning, in a “moment of heartfelt farewells as well as exciting new beginnings”.

The first three to arrive at the Buckinghamshire sanctuary were Household Cavalry horses Kilmanjaro, Jaipur and Harvester, retiring after 14, 13 and 11 years respectively.

“Kilimanjaro is fondly known as Killer, yet his nickname is no precedent for his sweet nature,” a Horse Trust spokesman said. “His previous rider accompanied him to retirement, his love for him apparent judging by the eight-hour round trip he took from Hyde Park barracks to Melton Mowbray, where the newly retired Household Cavalry horses temporarily live, and back down south to our Home of Rest, where they journeyed together one last time.”

Six more from the regiment, Odin, Legolas, Knightsbridge, Kimberly, Iago and Incognito, arrived shortly afterwards.

“Beautiful 16.3hh Kimberly was the only mare out of nine, her calm nonchalant behaviour and refined appearance winning our hearts as soon as she stepped off the lorry,” the spokesman said. “Knightsbridge stood out as the only trumpeter of the group, with a beautifully distinctive grey coat, which wasn’t so grey a couple of hours after arrival as he became acquainted with his new paddock!

“It was quite the sight witnessing the group of cavalry blacks plus Knightsbridge galloping off into acres of fresh grass after their military headcollars were removed for one final time. Their new neighbours, including Charisma and her friend Elizabeth, HRH Princess Anne’s former charger, seemingly dropped 10 years off their ages from all the excitement.”

The spokesman said that the horses had had impressive careers, taking part in major generals’ inspections, Trooping the Colour, state openings of parliament, state visits, royal weddings and The late Queen’s funeral.

A spokesman for the Household Cavalry said: “Their faithful service deserves the utmost admiration, and they are all truly the most deserving of a well-earned retirement.”

Poppy, a 17.2hh Shire, arrived the same day, from the Lancashire Police mounted section, as did former Metropolitan Police horse Yachtsman, both of whom had retired owing to lameness.

“Poppy took part in all types of police patrol work, from large football matches and events to Remembrance Day parades, which was very fitting as she was named Poppy after Armistice Day, the Platinum Jubilee parade in May 2022, leading a full military parade with a full band behind her, and much more,” said the spokesman.

“Yachtsman was described as a ‘completely and utterly lovable thug who can be boisterous and clumsy at times, and very kind, affectionate, inquisitive… with very little spatial awareness!’ according to a spokesman for the Metropolitan mounted branch.”

The last to arrive was Sky, 25, who had spent four and a half years with the Light Cavalry Honourable Artillery Company, as part of the regiment’s ceremonial team.

“Sky has been a massive part of the team here at the Light Cavalry Honourable Artillery Company, and she has a group of wonderful supporting riders that love and adore her,” a spokesman for the regiment said. “At 25 there are clear signs that she is ageing, and we are grateful to be able to give her the dignified retirement that she deserves.”

The Horse Trust spokesman said it was an emotional day.

“There wasn’t a dry eye as the horses galloped together in new pastures, marking the beginning of their retirements,” he said. “We’re overjoyed to be able to provide these magnificent animals with a well-deserved rest, plenty of carrots and of course those highly adored neck scratches.”

Horse Trust chief executive Jeanette Allen added: “We’re thrilled to be able to provide a blissful retirement to this amazing group of equine public servants. We have lots of new personalities to get to know and that’s hugely exciting. These horses deserve their ease after a life of public service and we are truly honoured to be able to provide that for them all.”

‘Like losing a friend’: colic claims the life of brilliant police horse

Officers at Avon and Somerset Police have paid tribute to the “cheeky” but brilliant police horse Blaise, who has died aged 15.

The stalwart of the Avon and Somerset mounted branch, who had been with the force since 2018, suffered a sudden bout of colic and could not be saved.

A spokesman for the force said: “PH Blaise was 15 years old when he sadly died after getting colic. He had been with Avon and Somerset Police for five years, spending three years with his rider PC Amy Glew.

“PH Blaise is described as a cheeky character who became a mentor to the younger horses in the mounted division. He was a brilliant horse who loved to play around but when he started working, he would do exactly as we trained him to do.

“He has worked a number of football games, festivals such as Glastonbury and was one of the horses deployed during the Bristol riot, which took place outside Bridewell police station in spring 2021. He was a huge part of the team and will be sorely missed by everyone.”

PC Glew told ITV news she was on maternity leave when the riot broke out in 2021, so another officer was riding Blaise, who “really showed what a brilliant police horse he was”, demonstrating his bravery as he took everything in his stride.

The Avon and Somerset Police mounted section was honoured in 2021 with the first ever Police Horse and Officer Action of the Year award, which was presented on the last night of the Horse of the Year Show that October.

“What our officers and horses experienced were levels of violence like nothing they had seen before,” said chief superintendent Claire Armes, head of operational support directorate at Avon and Somerset Police, at the time.

“The courage and resilience they displayed was a credit to their characters, their training and to the outstanding bonds of loyalty and trust that our officers have built with their horses.

“Our police horses have played a major role in every single public order incident in Avon and Somerset in the last 30 years, helping us contain and manage major incidents, protect the public and prevent injuries. They are, beyond doubt, a hugely valuable asset to our service.”

Police sergeant Hannah Clarke had said the riots were the strongest aggression she had ever experienced in her career, and that the horses – Mendip, Somerset, Windsor, Trinity, Blaise and Clevedon – were “just amazing”.

After Blaise’s death, PC Glew told ITV: “It’s like losing a friend, a partner. We’ve lost a really good police horse but we’ve also lost one of the team. It’s just really, really sad.”

Police horse recovering from injury in collision with car

A police horse is recovering from a “slight injury” sustained in a road traffic collision with a vehicle – as police appeal for witnesses or dashcam footage.

West Yorkshire Police issued an appeal for information yesterday (7 March) following the incident last Friday (1 March).

A police spokesman said the incident happened on Bradford Road, Tingley, Leeds, at 2.10pm and involved a Nissan car and Police Horse Ledston, who is based with the force’s mounted section at Carr Gate, Wakefield.

The spokesman confirmed that no people were injured in the collision. Ledston sustained a “very slight injury”, but the spokesman added that this was not anything he “won’t fully recover from”.

“Officers from the roads policing unit are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who may have dashcam footage to contact them,” said the spokesman.

British Horse Society (BHS) road statistics

The society’s annual statistics showed that three people and six horses died on the road in 2023, and 94 people and 86 horses were injured. Of the 3,383 incidents reported to the BHS 85% occurred because a vehicle passed too closely or too fast.

A BHS spokesman said the figures are a “stark reminder” that road incidents involving equestrians are continuing to happen around the UK – despite the Highway Code changes in 2022. In the Highway Code drivers are advised to pass horses at no more than 10mph, and at two metres’ distance.

Meet Trooper, Greater Manchester Police’s (GMP) newest equine recruit, an 18.2hh part-bred Shire who is settling in well to life in the mounted branch.

Trooper, 11, has passed his initial assessment with flying colours, and is now comfortably installed, enjoying turnout and his “penthouse suite” extra-large stable, as the biggest police horse in the country.

GMP stable manager Claire Hamer told H&H about Trooper, and the training all equine recruits undertake.

“He’s one of the biggest police horses nationally for a long time,” she said. “He’s a gentle giant, and he likes people.”

Trooper came from the Cumbrian Heavy Horses riding centre, from which the mounted unit has bought horses before.

“When we advertise for horses, we usually look for those aged six to 10, so they’ve been backed and ridden away,” Claire said. “With Trooper’s sort of breed, they may not have done any intensive work but they’ve hacked out and seen a bit, and the temperament is there.”

The unit recruits heavy horses such as Trooper, but not exclusively, Clare explained.

“We do have sport horses; we have to have that type for the officers to train with, walk, trot, canter and jumping, and we also have the Trooper type, who are steadier, quicker to train and more predictable, dare I say,” she said. “The sport horses tend to be quirkier, and definitely have their own opinions on a lot of things, which keeps us on our toes! And it makes us better riders.”

As is always the case with potential recruits, Trooper arrived for a long trial first. This can be an obstacle in some sales, Claire said, as the unit likes to try horses for four to eight weeks to ensure they are right for the job.

Trooper arrived in early December and the unit assessed him against various criteria. One issue was that he was “not very happy about loading”, and as the police horses travel frequently to their patrols, this was an issue. But with the unit’s approved and research-backed training techniques, he was soon happy to get on the lorry.

Lots of groundwork followed – the horses are taught to “park” as one key skill.

“The ultimate aim is to be able to park the horse in the arena, leave and go and make a coffee,” Claire said. “That’s really important if, for example, an officer is left with two horses when the other has to get off, maybe to arrest someone.”

Trooper was ridden by different trainers, and his responsiveness and reaction to different stimuli was assessed.

“We look at attitude to visual hazards, from different directions and at different heights,” Claire said. “We’re not looking for a horse who doesn’t react; they’re horses, we expect reactions, we’re looking for ones who are happier at a closer distance, and the flight instinct doesn’t kick in. There’s no magic wand, it’s about keeping the response at a low level, and keeping them relaxed.”

Trooper was taken out and about; as a former riding school horse, he had seen a lot, with many riders, but in his case the unit had to know he was also independent enough to also be on his own if needed. His relaxation at halt was assessed; Claire said this is very important for police horses.

“Everything was very positive in his first week,” she added. “Manners in the stable, handling, everything. We were a bit concerned the wagons weren’t the right size but we moved the partitions and he’s now travelling happily.”

The unit has horses on patrol every day, and has a presence at events such as football matches.

“Fundamentally, we’re a public-order unit,” Claire said. “We provide support for foot officers in public order or disorder situations, and we’re a preventative measure as spotters, as we’re high up and can see for miles.

“And it’s about public confidence too; we get a lot of people approaching us, and the horses build bridges. I’ve seen people who have had a bad experience with the police and been told they might be hostile but they’ve been friendly to us. We’ve had officers being given intel that wouldn’t be given to other officers.”

The horses also cover more ground, and areas that cars cannot reach.

Trooper will now settle into his routine, with patrols most days, turnout, and two days off a week. This summer, he will tour empty football stadiums, to get him accustomed to that environment, and may take part in some school visits.

“Hopefully he might go to some concerts at the end of the summer too,” Claire said. “He’s a very patient horse; more whoa than go, and very trusting; he might stop and look at something, but then he looks to his handler.

“We’ve had to go up a rug size, and the farrier has his work cut out! We’ve taken the walls down between some of the stables to give more room, and he’s got one of those penthouse suites.

“It’s a privilege to do this role, and there are a lot of passionate people in the unit. The horses really enjoy it too. The only problem with some is that we struggle to retire them as they love the job.”

A grey Shire police horse who led The late Queen’s funeral procession has been put down after a short but happy retirement.

The former Thames Valley Police (TVP) horse, who led Her late Majesty’s cortege on the Long Walk at Windsor Castle in September 2022, was aged 13. The 18hh mare retired to The Horse Trust after the funeral, her last deployment, owing to soundness issues.

“Although Aurora had only been with us a short while, she instantly found favour with our team and amongst our supporters who met her on the yard when visiting,” a Horse Trust spokesman said.

“Aurora served TVP valiantly throughout her career and attended all mounted deployments including football matches, demonstrations, royal escorts, neighbourhood policing patrols, school visits and music concerts. She also participated in mutual aid events, attending football matches in both Leicester and Brighton.”

The spokesman said that although she enjoyed her work and was an “exemplary” police horse, her ongoing lameness issues led to her retirement.

“Fitting straight into our herd of retirees, Aurora made many friends both equine and human due to her placid nature,” the spokesman said. “Her gentle character and striking size and beauty made hers a popular stable door for our visitors to linger at, as Aurora almost always had her head out and was ready for the strokes and adoration she so deserved in her retirement.

“A grey Shire horse standing at 18hh, Aurora could be spotted in the field easily like a glorious marble statue, both stoic and stunning.”

The spokesman said Aurora’s issues worsened, and although she was closely monitored by the charity’s vet, she then sustained a ruptured ligament.

“Due to her other diagnoses and sheer size, this severely limited her prognosis and any treatment options available would have severely impacted her quality of life,” he said.

“Therefore, it was decided to let Aurora be at peace and run pain-free across the rainbow bridge. While her time with us was shorter than some, she certainly made a massive impression on the team and our supporters. We are grateful to have been able to give her time to enjoy the fresh air, roll in plenty of mud and run freely with other horses during her time here at The Horse Trust. Rest in peace, sweet Aurora.”

A TVP spokesman added: “Aurora had such a sweet nature, she was another big gentle giant of ours who generally looked after the newer riders but always did a good job of keeping us on our toes.

“We cannot thank The Horse Trust enough for the wonderful retirement she got to enjoy and how well she was treated. Gallop pain-free sweet girl and thank you for your service.”

One-tonne police horse helps arrest man with knife in last week of distinguished career

A one-tonne Percheron police horse helped arrest a man carrying a knife in the final week of his distinguished career with the Metropolitan Police mounted branch.

Police Horse Putney, 17, and PC Lehane responded to a 999 call from Lewisham, south London, last month. On seeing PH Putney, the man “gave himself up and dropped the weapon on the floor”.

“A great result for PH Putney, who is saddled up for retirement later this week after a long and dedicated career protecting London’s communities,” the Met said.

A spokesman for the force told H&H the Met bought Putney as a five-year-old in 2012, and after his probationary training, he fitted in well.

“From day one we knew he was going to excel due to his breeding as a Percheron, size, standing at just shy of 18hh, and weighing in at just over one tonne,” the spokesman said.

“Putney’s character shone through as brave and courageous in all aspects of public order policing. Putney was often chosen as a firm favourite for an inspector’s horse, leading from the front.”

The spokesman added that PH Putney had a taste for fresh foliage, which he would often hunt out while he was on patrol.

“Having completed his probationary period, Putney would be used to show the younger horses the ropes,” the spokesman said.

“Putney was a regular feature at football grounds including Charlton, Crystal Palace, Millwall and Wembley as well as numerous ceremonial events.

“At home in his stable he was quite the character, he was well known by the night duty as in his younger days he would frequently try to escape his stable and had been found trying to eat the hay in the barn!

“Feeding times will certainly be quieter. Putney will be a huge loss at Lewisham and we wish him all the best in his retirement.”

‘I stay because of my love of horses’: mounted police officer clocks up 50 years’ service

A mounted police officer who has served for 50 years says he has no plans to retire yet, and his love of horses has kept him in the job.

Paul Brown retired from South Yorkshire Police (SYP) in 2015 but did not want to leave so returned the next day as a special constable.

“As long as SYP will have me, and I keep passing my fitness test and mounted ticket, I will stay,” he said. “I’ve stayed so long because of my love of horses, and we have an excellent team. You go to work not knowing what you’re going to do that day.”

Paul started as a cadet in 1973, and was posted to Sheffield and Rotherham Constabulary. At 19, he went to Pannal Ash Harrogate Training, after which he was posted to Rotherham as a constable, the year SYP was established. In 1975, he was sent to Barnsley, where he worked in traffic and CID, and in 1978 to Penistone. Three years later, after a “chance conversation” in the pub, Paul found himself on a suitability course to be a mounted officer.

“I took to it like a duck to water,” he said. “I took part in county shows, we had a show team as we had the time then to compete. We now have a saddle club that we do in our own time but still represent the force.

“I’ve been all over the world competing, South Africa in 1996 was my first overseas competition, I’ve been to Oman, Abu Dhabi, Australia, America and Qatar, winning numerous awards over the years. I’ve visited many mounted units across the world and helped set the LA and Florida mounted units up with public order gear.”

Paul was among the mounted officers sent to London to help police the 2012 Olympics, which Paul described as the pinnacle of his career.

During his time with the mounted unit, Paul, who was awarded the British Empire Medal in the 2016 New Year Honours List, met celebrities including the Spice Girls but was also a screen star himself, appearing in Billy Elliot and Peaky Blinders, as well as a bread advertisement.

“But they aren’t the only exciting propositions Paul had in his time as a PC,” an SYP spokesman said. “He once found himself in a cage with five tigers at a circus visiting Barnsley. They were recruiting tiger trainers and Paul was invited to have a go, which he did! They could smell the horses on him, so he made a swift exit after a scenes-of-crime photographer, who was there by chance, managed to snap him in action.”

Paul has also bought and rehomed retired police horses over the years.

“Horses can break down barriers, people want to talk to you and see the horses,” he said.

“They help build a bridge between the police and the community. I’ve always lived by ‘treat people like you want to be treated yourself’ and you can’t go wrong.”

The life of a “legendary” 18.2hh Shire police horse, who provided close security to The late Queen, has ended aged 23.

Caesar retired to the Horse Trust in 2016 from Thames Valley Police following 10 years’ “dutiful service”.

The gelding was originally named Oliver and it had been planned for him to pull carts at county shows, but his life took a “completely different turn” when he joined the force, where he was given the name Caesar.

A Horse Trust spokesman said Caesar “lived up to his new title”, and “took to police work naturally”. During his career he attended public order commitments nationwide, and he was regularly recognised.

“Caesar was often deployed to assist with various security operations involving the Government and counter-terrorism patrols at identified target locations,” said the spokesman.

“Another of his important roles each year was providing close protection security for The late Queen at Royal Ascot during the royal procession.”

PC Laura of the Thames Valley Police mounted section said she was “in awe of the huge gentle giant” when she joined the force.

“With a jet-black glossy coat and feet the size of dinner plates, his sheer size was incredibly imposing, yet underneath he was a big softie with a liking for strawberries,” she said.

“I only had the pleasure of working with this incredible horse for a couple of years but have so many fond memories of shadowing him as he looked after our then sergeant at operational events across the force.”

Laura led Caesar during his “unsaddling ceremony” at the Horse Trust in August 2016.

“With content tears in my eyes, I knew that Caesar had more than earned this relaxation after a busy career with us,” she said.

The Horse Trust spokesman said Caesar had more than seven years of “peaceful and well-deserved” retirement.

“He enjoyed continuing his celebrity lifestyle without the day job,” said the spokesman.

“Caesar was the face of our sponsorship scheme, and his many fans have supported his retirement throughout his life in Buckinghamshire. Because of his popularity, he had his own ‘Caesar Sunday’, when enthusiasts would gather at the Home of Rest for Horses to meet him.”

Caesar was put down owing to deteriorating arthritis, which had been “carefully managed” by the Horse Trust’s veterinary director.

“As Caesar’s condition deteriorated, he began to struggle to lie down and get back up, especially due to his size. The equine care team noticed that this was becoming more frequent for Caesar and after a few incidents of him needing encouragement to stand, it was decided that to protect his quality of life, the kindest thing to do was to say goodbye to Caesar for the final time,” said the spokesman.

Horse Trust chief executive Jeanette Allen said everyone at the charity is “deeply saddened by the loss of the mighty Caesar”.

“This giant of a horse, with a giant heart to match, had over seven amazingly happy years here and we are so grateful and honoured to have been able to give him such a wonderful retirement,” she said.

“I’ve known him for almost as long as I’ve been here, having first met him at the Thames Valley Police stables where he was very much the section’s glorious equine leader. I fell head over heels for him on that first meeting and although it was absolutely the time to let him rest, I’m so relieved I got to say goodbye to him with a nose rub. My heartfelt thanks go out to the team here for his amazing care and to his army of dedicated sponsors who will be as bereft as we are.

“A real-life mighty steed who leaves behind a truly mighty legacy of love and admiration.”

PC Laura added on behalf of Thames Valley Police the mounted section was “deeply saddened to learn of the loss of our dear old faithful friend”.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Horse Trust that he was able to enjoy such a happy retirement. Gallop free now Caesar and thank you for your service,” she said.

‘A Star in a Storm’: final farewell to award-winning police horse after long retirement

Tributes have been paid to an award-winning police horse who has been put down aged 28 after sustaining a tendon injury.

Sawley was part of Lancashire Police’s mounted unit for 16 years, retiring to The Horse Trust in 2017.

“Sawley was a striking presence and although he had to be tough to get the job done, in his down time he was a sweet spirit who made plenty of friends, both human and horse, in his retirement and out on the beat,” said a spokesman for The Horse Trust.

Sawley’s passport name was “Star in a Storm”.

“He certainly lived up to this name during his career, not only partaking in local patrols and public order work at football matches but also helping out other constabularies further afield, having attended Old Trafford, anti-fracking and English Defence League marches, and Appleby Horse Fair in 2010,” said the spokesman.

“During ceremonial events such as the Remembrance Sunday parade, Sawley would be in the lead and he attended the switch-on of the Blackpool illuminations on several occasions.”

Sawley had two “claims to fame”, an appearance on Crimewatch, and winning the horse of the year award at the 2010 charity Blue Lights show, for those who worked in the emergency services.

“Sawley was known as a superstar. He had a fantastic policing career and served tremendously. He was like a father figure to the younger recruits,” said the spokesman.

“Unfortunately an ongoing lameness issue meant that Sawley was ready to retire after 16 years’ service and he made his way to the grassy pasture here at The Horse Trust to live out the rest of his days in comfort.”

The spokesman said Sawley settled into retired life quickly, and he made firm friends with Stanley, a former resident of the Gaddesden Place Riding for the Disabled Association group.

“Sadly after several years of peaceful retirement, Sawley ruptured a tendon and due to the pain, it was decided to say goodnight for the final time,” he said.

“We thank Sawley for his dedicated service and are glad that we were able to give him such a restful and caring retirement here at our Home of Rest for Horses. While his loss will be greatly felt by us all, we know that he will bravely trot across the rainbow bridge to be free of pain for ever more.”

Police horses help make terminally ill child’s ‘wishes come true’

A mounted police unit has made a terminally ill child’s “wishes come true” when they invited him to visit.

South Yorkshire Police’s operational support unit welcomed three-year-old Ely Fearnley and his family to Ring Farm, Sheffield, last week. Ely has an incurable brain tumour, but “like all three-year-olds is vehicle-mad and has a love of all things police”.

“Ely was diagnosed with his brain tumour last year and has been making memories with his family. Knowing the joy that meeting our four-legged colleagues can bring to children’s faces, we invited Ely and his family to Ring Farm,” said a South Yorkshire police spokesman.

“Ely, his older brother Guy, mum Vicki and dad Steven were greeted by our mounted department and traffic officers, horses and OK9 wellbeing dog Bear.”

During the visit Ely and Guy sat in the mounted unit’s horsebox and a traffic patrol car, and met some of the force’s “different modes of transport”, police horses Foggy, Stan, Woody and Sully.

“The giant boys were extremely gentle with Ely and Guy, and mounted officer PC Phil Reed explained what the horses enjoyed and how they helped police officers with their work,” said the spokesman.

“Ely was given a warrant card to show our commitment to him being part of the South Yorkshire Police family, and officers presented him with a police teddy bear.”

Mrs Fearnley said her family had an “absolutely lovely morning”.

Sheffield sergeant Tracy Spratt, who organised the visit, said the unit feels “extremely privileged to have met Ely and welcomed him and his family to Ring Farm”.

“Seeing the joy brought to Ely’s face was heartwarming. He is such a sweet boy, whose smile and courageous charisma could light up the world. We hope he’s able to make more fond memories with his family,” she said.

Guilty: man ‘made no attempt to help’ as his dog attacked police horse

A man who “made no attempt to help” as his dog attacked an on-duty police horse causing “nasty injuries” has pleaded guilty to being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control.

Hakan Niyazi Candermir, of Campbell Road, London, admitted the offence when he appeared at Willesden Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 28 September. The 25-year-old is yet to be sentenced.

H&H reported on the incident in March; Police Horse Urbane was attacked in Victoria Park, Tower Hamlets.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: “Officers and horses were on a routine patrol in Victoria Park when they came across Candermir, who was walking his dog.

“Unprovoked, the dog began attacking the horse and Candermir was unable to control the dog or get him away from PH Urbane.”

Superintendent Martin Kirby, from the Met’s Taskforce, said it was a “very shocking event”, which “could have been easily avoided if the dog was being responsibly looked after and was on a lead”.

“Instead, Urbane was bitten by an out-of-control dog, receiving nasty injuries including tears and lacerations, while carrying out his duty,” he added.

The Met spokesman said a member of the public managed to stop the attack, by “hitting the dog multiple times and then managing to get hold of the dog and move it away from PH Urbane”.

“It was at this point, after no attempt to help during the incident, the suspect then put the dog back on the lead,” the spokesman said.

“During this attack PH Urbane sustained eight lacerations from dog bites and needed stitches to his torso and legs after receiving wounds to his front legs, chest and underbelly.”

Urbane spent time recuperating, at the Met’s Imber Court and then at the Horse Trust.

Mr Kirby said: “Urbane had to take several months off duty to recover from his injuries but thankfully he’s now fully recovered and back patrolling the streets of London.

“He is generally very comfortable around dogs and we were particularly worried that this attack would affect the way he interacts with other animals. Happily, he’s just as relaxed with dogs as he’s always been.”

“Whilst there continue to be noteworthy and sometimes tragic cases of dogs dangerously out of control in public I’m pleased to say that the majority of dog owners are responsible. This case illustrates why always having control of your dog is so important.

“I would also praise the calm actions of PS Mann who was riding PH Urbane, and who dealt with a difficult situation with professionalism and fortitude.”

Police horse and rider injured after dog runs out of house and attacks

An on-duty police horse and mounted officer were both injured after a dog ran out of a house in London and attacked.

The two members of the Metropolitan Police mounted branch were on routine duty in Maroon Street, Stepney, east London, on Friday afternoon (18 August), when “one of the police horses was bitten by a dog which ran out from a nearby house”, a spokesman for the force said.

“The rider of the horse, a police constable, was unseated and sustained a minor injury. She did not require hospital treatment.”

The spokesman said the horse sustained injuries to one leg, adding: “It bolted from the scene but was recovered by officers a short distance away with no further incident.”

The dog also sustained a minor injury “as a result of being trodden on by the horse”.

Both animals were seen by a police vet and it was found that neither was seriously hurt, the spokesman said.

The dog is still in police kennels, and an offence of a dog being dangerously out of control has been recorded but no arrests have been made.

Hero police dog who inspired law to protect service animals dies aged 14

“Fabulous Finn”, the retired police dog who helped introduce greater protection for service animals, has died aged 14.

A spokesman for Finn’s handler Dave Wardell announced “with pain and sadness” that “our beautiful, brave, hero Finn” had died in his sleep on Thursday night (28 July).

Finn and his handler PC Dave Wardell, of Hertfordshire Constabulary, were stabbed by a youth while on duty in October 2016. Dave sustained an injury to his hand and Finn needed emergency life-saving surgery for serious wounds to his chest and head. He recovered and returned to service, retiring in 2017.

Although a 16-year-old was charged with actual bodily harm for stabbing PC Wardell, the attack on Finn was classified criminal damage, and following this Finn became the inspiration behind a new law to protect service animals, including police horses.

The Animal Welfare (Service Animals) Act, known as Finn’s Law, came into force in June 2019. Under the act, it is an offence to cause unnecessary suffering to a service animal. It also allows, in certain circumstances, to disregard a defendant’s claim that they were protecting themselves and so were justified in using physical force against a service animal, therefore causing it necessary suffering.

Finn’s Law part two was then introduced in England and Wales in 2021; the Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Bill. Under this, the maximum sentence for the worst kind of animal abuse was increased to five years in prison.

In 2018 Finn was awarded the PDSA gold medal, known as the animals’ George Cross. He made it to the finals of ITV’s Britain Got Talent in 2019.

“He was so loved by everyone and will be missed incredibly,” said Gemma, Dave’s wife.

“Thank you for your service Finn, now go and rest in peace our sweet boy, until we meet again.”

‘We wish you peace’: farewell to former police horse who won award for ‘astounding bravery’

A former police horse who won an award for his “astounding bravery” during the London riots has died aged 29 after a golden retirement full of rolling, tummy rubs and galloping in the fields.

Boris, who served with the Metropolitan and Gloucestershire police, joined the former as a four-year-old and served for 20 years, retiring to The Horse Trust five years ago.

Boris passed his initial training at Imber Court with “flying colours”, and was posted to Shoreditch Police station in Hackney.

“Boris was so good he was very quickly selected to do all The Queen’s escorts, although he was so strong only a handful of officers could ride him as he would have a habit of taking off,” a Horse Trust spokesman said, adding that after several years, Boris was transferred to the stables at Kings Cross, and issued to another officer.

“During his time there he was involved in many public order incidents and policed many football matches across London, always brave and fearless, and he always he led from the front going into disorder situations,” the spokesman said. “He maintained his brave attitude and helped instil this into the other horses.”

In 2014, Boris was given the PDSA order of merit, known as the “animal OBE”, for his courage in the 2011 riots.

“Although small for a police horse, because he was so brave he led the mounted unit into the heart of the Tottenham riots after a long day of patrolling football events,” a Horse Trust spokesman said. “That day they were greeted by burning buildings, fallen debris, missiles thrown at them and foot officers in danger. On arrival, with Boris leading the way, the crowd began to back away and allowed foot officers to regain control. This astounding bravery gained Boris and the other horses the PDSA order of merit.”

Boris’s rider, Constable Paul Copeland, said he was “as brave as they come, with a lovely calm nature and willingness to work.”

Boris won another accolade in the Animals in Policing Awards 2021 for his “exemplary” service with Gloucestershire Constabulary. By that time, he was living at The Horse Trust, to which he had retired in the presence of Princess Anne, in 2018.

“The Horse Trust was honoured to have provided Boris with a well-deserved retirement after all his years loyally serving our country,” the spokesman said. “He enjoyed an incredibly peaceful retirement, during which his favourite ‘retirement’ pastimes were galloping around the pastures, rolling in the sand paddock and grabbing a good tummy rub by one of his wonderful carers.”

Boris had had navicular and arthritis for some years, which had been managed by the team to keep him comfortable and happy, the spokesman said, but the conditions progressed to a point where this was no longer possible.

“Therefore, we made the extremely heart-wrenching decision to say goodbye, accepting this was the right time for him”.

Russell Pickin, director of equine care for The Horse Trust, and former mounted branch inspector for the Met Police, said Boris was “the archetypal police horse who looked stunning, dealt bravely with any situation and gave many years of unwavering service to the Metropolitan Police and people of London.”

The spokesman added: “After all you have done for your community and those you served, we wish you peace, our brave and gallant Boris. You have touched the lives of all who knew you, both in your career and in your retirement.

“It has been both a joy and a privilege to serve you after your years of dedicated service and you will be sorely missed by everyone at The Horse Trust.”

‘Big-hearted’ police horse viciously attacked by dog returns to work

A police horse who sustained horrific injuries in a dog attack in a London park has returned to work after a successful recovery.

Urbane suffered wounds to his chest, torso and legs in the attack in Victoria Park, Tower Hamlets, while on duty with the mounted brand of the Met Police in March.

The gelding spent four weeks recuperating at The Horse Trust and the charity has said he “will be very welcome any time”, as he heads back to the capital.

“He immediately settled in and became a firm favourite of all the grooms due to his wonderful character and nature,” said Russ Pickin, director of equine care at The Horse Trust.

“Urbane seemed to love his time here and integrated seamlessly with the other horses he shared his field with, and they too, very quickly grew to like him.

“It was an absolute pleasure to have Urbane with us and look after him during his respite and it was with sadness but very fond memories that we saw him walk up the ramp of the police lorry ready to go back to his duties of serving London.”

The police horse has been on duty at events including Trooping the Colour, changing of the guard, The late Queen’s funeral, plus football matches and demonstrations.

“He suffered appalling injuries, and The Horse Trust was the right place for him to come to continue his recovery,” said the charity’s chief executive, Jeanette Allen.

Tributes have been paid to a “courageous and gentle” serving police horse, described by her human colleagues as the “best this force has ever had”.

Penelope, the first mare recruited to serve with Northumbria Police, died this month aged 14 following a “short illness”.

The 16.3hh Clydesdale joined the mounted section in 2019 and was formally named Bella.

“Penelope was without doubt the best police horse this force has ever had,” said Sergeant Stu Coates of Northumbria Police’s mounted section.

“She was brave, bold and courageous but patient and gentle when needed. While she was known for falling asleep on duty, she was always considered the leader of the section.

“When required, Penelope used to go in head first to get the job done, giving confidence to other horses.

“Her career highlights included policing various large-scale protests, attending countless football matches across the country, and proudly leading last year’s Remembrance Sunday parade in Sunderland. She was also named ‘Animal of the Year’ at the force’s annual Pride in Policing Awards in 2021.

“Penelope really was one in a million and will be sadly missed by everyone.”

Connections are also mourning retired police dog Russell, who died aged 14 in the same week. The cocker spaniel served as an operational search dog for eight years alongside his “best friend and handler”, Sergeant Gav College. After he retired from operational duties, Russell was not quite ready to hang up his harness and so returned to work in 2018 as the force’s first community support dog, serving alongside Sergeant Sally College.

He officially retired from that role in 2020, remaining with the Colleges as their ”much-loved pet”.“Russell was the most gentle-natured and loving dog – but also a manic search machine when in work mode, and he loved a tennis ball!” said Sergeant Sally College.

“A highlight for me during his role as a community engagement dog was when Russell visited a dementia café where a gentleman took a shine to him, stroking him and smiling.

“His wife started to cry, saying it was the first time in two years that her husband, who had severe dementia, had shown any emotion and she was going to buy a dog!”

She added: “Russell was so switched on to people’s emotions and feelings. He knew instinctively if someone was not well or was having trouble reaching him – if this was the case, he would gently put his paws out to help them.

“It’s fair to say that Russell was a unique character who touched the lives of so many people during his life – we will miss him so very much.”

‘Big-hearted’ police horse recovering at charity after London dog attack

A police horse who was injured in a vicious dog attack in a London park has moved to the Horse Trust to continue his recovery.

Urbane sustained multiple wounds to his chest, torso and legs when he was attacked in Victoria Park, Tower Hamlets, while on duty in March.

He is recovering at the Buckinghamshire charity; the plan is for him to spend the next four to six weeks there, and the aim is for him to return to active service.

“He suffered appalling injuries, and the Horse Trust is the right place for him to come to continue his recovery, where he will deservedly receive our world-leading veterinary care and respite,” said the charity’s chief executive, Jeanette Allen.

“Like all our horses here at the Horse Trust, Urbane is a brave, big-hearted, loveable animal. He has a wonderful character and is incredibly reliable.

“As we have specialist skills in caring for police horses, we are honoured to be entrusted with Police Horse Urbane’s ongoing recovery, which will be administered with expert care by our staff and volunteers and supported by kind donations from the public.”

Ms Allen added that Urbane has “served Londoners faultlessly” at events including Trooping the Colour, changing of the guard and The late Queen’s funeral, and has “kept the public safe” when on duty at football matches and demonstrations.

Despite the injuries Urbane suffered from the dog who attacked him, he has already been pictured befriending his vet’s Labrador, and it is hoped the horse will make a complete recovery, both psychologically and physically.

“We were all shocked and devastated by the dog attack on Police Horse Urbane, who is a remarkably dependable horse with a playful side to his character,” said Sgt Carly Harber, of the Metropolitan Police mounted section.

“We are so grateful to the Horse Trust for offering respite to this magnificent member of our equine team, and we will be watching his recovery with great affection and hope.”

‘Always happy and singing’: vocal police horse retired after 10 years’ service

A much-loved police horse who was “always happy” and would “whinny to say hello” has retired after 10 years’ service.

Lancaster joined Lancashire Constabulary’s mounted unit in 2013, as a five-year-old. During his career he took part in events across the country, and owing to his name he was a “regular” at the annual Lancaster Castle shield-hanging ceremony.

“He went to countless large football matches, and a particularly memorable English Defence League demonstration on Preston Flag Market, where he was right in the middle of it all,” said a spokesman for the force.

“He helped many riders pass their intermediate riding course in both the flat and jumping phases; he could be quite a challenging ride at times but was so rewarding when it all came together.”

The spokesman said Lancaster, who was known on the yard as Tommy, “had the honour” of being featured on the 2022 Murphy’s Army Purple Poppy Campaign, helping raise money for chosen charities.

“He featured on poppy wreaths and leaflets wearing his purple poppy with pride,” he said.

“He has always been a vocal boy, always happy and singing. Not an hour goes by where you don’t hear a whinny from him, for no reason other than just to say hello, and that is what we will miss most about him.”

Lancaster was retired from duty aged 15 owing to his PPID (Cushing’s). The spokesman said it was an “emotional day” as he went through the gates for the final time to make his way to the Horse Trust this week.

“Farewell Lancaster, thank you for all your service and say hello to your old friends Caton, Belthorn, Darwen, Sawley, Silverdale, Rivington, Elswick and Nelson who are all enjoying their retirement at the Horse Trust,” he said.

Police horse injured in vicious dog attack ‘inundated with treats and apples’ as he recovers

The police horse who suffered multiple injuries in a dog attack in London last week has been “inundated with apples and treats” as he recovers.

Footage emerged last week of the attack, in Victoria Park, Tower Hamlets, on 22 March. Two mounted officers were on duty as the dog repeatedly attacked one of the horses.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said at the time that the horse, Urbane, needed stitches to the wounds he suffered.

In an update after the incident, a spokesman for the force said the seven-year-old gelding had sustained wounds to his front legs, chest and belly, and was recuperating in the Met stables outside central London.

“He is being seen daily by a vet, who is making sure he is as comfortable as possible,” the spokesman said. “It is believed he will make a full recovery.

“Urbane has been inundated with apples and treats from concerned and kind members of the public.”

The spokesman added that the officer riding Urbane was not physically injured, and is being supported by his mounted branch colleagues.

In a further update, the spokesman thanked all those who had expressed their concern and sent good wishes to Urbane and his rider.

“The officers and horses at Bow Mounted Branch are very touched by all the kind words and support shown,” he said.

The dog was taken into police kennels after the incident.

One of Greater Manchester Police’s (GMP) newest recruits had his first taste of football and did “fantastically” at his debut game.

Nickleby, a six-year-old 16.2hh grey gelding, already a “firm favourite”, was among the six horses bought by the force on a shopping trip to Ireland last autumn.

A GMP spokesman said the team is “really excited” about his progress.

“Nickleby had done a bit of hunting and riding on the beach before coming to GMP,” he said.

“Since arriving, he has been to his first low-level football match. This means he went to one that didn’t have as many people in the crowd as some of the more well-known games. To prepare him for this, he went to the empty ground the day before, so he could familiarise himself with his surroundings.

“This meant it wasn’t strange to him when he arrived the next day and there were some small crowds there. He did fantastically and the team are really excited about his progress.

“Nickleby has also been patrolling to different divisions on the horse box and has been taking part in some low-level effects training to help prepare him for hazards he may meet when out on a patrol.”

The equine colleagues who joined at the same time include Belle, a six-year-old mare, who has made a “promising start” and staff are “delighted with her progress so far”.

“The trainers are continuing with her schooling to maintain her obedience and understanding of the rider,” said the spokesman, adding that she has started patrolling the local area with another horse to build her confidence.

“She has been taking part in some low-level effects training to help prepare her for hazards she may meet when out on a patrol. She’s got a great temperament and is really trusting of her rider, so everyone’s really excited for her future and what she can bring to the unit.”

The six recruits featured a mix of real youngsters and more established horses. The five-year-old Chuzzlewit was turned out when he arrived to give him time to mature, and has started his early training.

“Chuzzlewit has not been out on patrol yet, but he’s showing that he has the right attitude and temperament to be a great police horse,” said the spokesman.

GMP is seeking loan horses for periods of four to six months, to be used in training its novice and experienced officers.

Police horse needed stitches after vicious dog attack on duty

A police horse had to have stitches after it was attacked by a dog while on duty yesterday (22 March).

The dog was seized after the incident, in Victoria Park, Tower Hamlets.

Video shared on social media shows two mounted police officers riding bay horses, one which was the target of the attack. The dog can be seen continually leaping at the distressed horse, which spun and side-stepped as it tried to avoid the dog.

As bystanders yelled “Get hold of the dog”, and “Whose dog is it”, the horse repeatedly went down on to its knees, as it appeared the dog’s teeth were sunk into its leg.

Eventually, someone grabbed the dog and pulled it away, and the officer managed to dismount from the horse.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police told H&H: “On Wednesday, 22 March a dog was seized in Victoria Park, Tower Hamlets, after it attacked a police horse.

“The horse required stitches and is expected to return to duty following its recovery. The dog remains in police kennels and officers are in contact with its owner.

“No arrests have been made. Enquiries continue.”

‘It’s been an honour’: farewell to former police horse who led guards at Buckingham Palace

Bransby Horses has paid heartbroken tribute to a former police horse who led the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace.

The welfare charity said former Metropolitan Police mount Saratoga had to be put down aged 12, on vets’ advice, owing to a longstanding lameness issue. A spokesman said the 16.2hh gelding was a favourite with staff and visitors, and that it is an honour to be able to care for such horses.

“We are heartbroken to have lost the wonderful Saratoga,” Bransby press officer Maria Thompson told H&H. “He came to us after a short career with the police as we were able to provide the specialist care he needed. It’s credit to all those who’ve looked after him that he had so many happy years with us.”

Maria said Saratoga had a short but “illustrious” career in the police; he joined the force as a four-year-old in 2015 and enjoyed taking part in parades. He worked at football matches and leading out the changing of the guard.

His trainer and rider, PC Claudia Breen, said he took to the job quickly, and loved his work.

“He was a cracking little horse,” she said. “He was everyone’s favourite, the sergeants used to argue over who would ride him because he was so easy. Normally it takes a few years for a police horse to be able to cope with the crowds at Buckingham Palace but Saratoga was doing it within months.

“In fact he was operational within seven months, which means anyone in the force could ride him – this usually takes a couple of years to achieve. He did two years with us and then one day his hind leg locked out.”

Saratoga had veterinary treatment but investigations found a ligament tear in his stifle, and he was retired to Bransby. The charity commits to taking in up to two former service horses every year; their temperaments mean they are good “nannies” for some more anxious horses and ponies.

“Being such friendly horses, they also enjoy meeting the thousands of visitors to Bransby Horses each year,” Maria said, adding that Saratoga, with his “sweet, laid-back nature”, became a “Sponsorship Star”. This meant supporters who made regular donations in his name would be sent regular information and updates on him.

“Saratoga thoroughly enjoyed his retirement at Bransby Horses and we have many happy memories of him,” she said. “It’s an honour for us as a charity to be able to offer these beautiful working horses retirement and we are for ever grateful to our loyal supporters whose donations made this possible.”

Bransby still has one former police horse in its care, grey gelding Steele.

Wobbler syndrome forces police horse to retire aged seven

A police horse whose career was cut short owing to a neurological condition has been welcomed by a charity, with hopes of finding him a non-ridden home in the future.

Clover joined South Wales Police as a five-year-old in 2021 and showed “all the attributes to have a fantastic career”. But when it became apparent something “wasn’t quite right” with the way he was walking, the force sought veterinary advice.

Clover was diagnosed with wobbler syndrome, also known as cervical vertebrae stenotic myelopathy. Wobbler syndrome is associated with a narrowing of the spinal canal in the neck that leads to compression or the spinal cord. This can lead to neurological abnormalities, including ataxia.

It was decided that Clover was “no longer able to cope with the physical demands” of being a police horse, and he was retired to HorseWorld in Bristol.

“We’re pleased to welcome Clover. He’s a gentleman and a credit to the training he received with South Wales Police,” said Sarah Hollister, HorseWorld’s head of equine welfare.

“He’s settled in really well and has even found himself a ‘girlfriend’. He has been assessed by our vets, and other than the neurological condition which brought about his early retirement, he’s very happy and healthy.”

Sarah added that Clover will be given time to continue settling in and the team will get to know his character, before deciding “what his next chapter may be”.

“He has such a sweet nature, we’re hoping he could be rehomed as a non-ridden companion on our loan scheme and enjoy life as part of a loving family,” she said.

HorseWorld is also home to Lolly, a 17.1hh Shire mare with similar with neurological problems to Clover’s. She was taken in by the charity in 2017.

“It’s so rewarding to be able to offer a home to horses like these.” said Sarah. “In this current climate, it’s hard for horses of this size to find a good home when they cannot be ridden.

“They are costly pets and there aren’t many people who are happy to take on a responsibility like that. Here they are safe, loved and are valued members of the HorseWorld family. Their individual needs will be met and we can guarantee they’ll never know cruelty or neglect for the rest of their lives.”

Lolly arrived with Dime and elderly mare Florin as part of a multi-agency operation, when a herd of 27 Shires was abandoned by their breeder. Dime has since found a home, and Florin “lived to a good age”, but had since died. Lolly will soon be available on HorseWorld’s sponsorship scheme.

A former police horse loved by many has been put down aged 21 following a bout of colic.

Irish sports horse Jedburgh, known as Jed, retired to the Horse Trust in 2017 after a “very successful” 10-year career with the Metropolitan Police.

During his career 17hh Jed was involved in high-profile events including the 2011 London riots and Margaret Thatcher’s funeral in 2013. He also regularly worked at football matches and protest marches across London, and visited many schools.

Jed retired from the force owing to heart problems, and at the time, describing his character, his police colleagues said, “If Carlsberg made horses”. He was known for his “cheeky personality” and for “getting his own way” by tilting his head and asking for treats from officers.

His former rider Clint described Jed as the “best horse in the world”, and said they had got through some “sticky situations” together.

Around the start of October 2022 Jed suffered an eye injury, and it was thought a thorn had gone through his cornea. At first it was expected Jed might have to have his eye removed through surgery, but he responded well to treatment and was still able to see, although he remained under supervision.

“Our vet Nicky was very happy with his recovery and how nicely the eye was healing. The team were all so pleased with how well he was recovering from this, so when he suddenly developed colic, it made the decision to let him cross the rainbow bridge even more heartbreaking,” said a Horse Trust spokesman.
