‘People’s response has been phenomenal’: new police horses help educate drivers

A new mounted police unit has been helping spread important safety advice to drivers on how to pass horses on the road.

West Midlands Police’s mounted section – re-established December after a 26-year break – has had a “busy first two months” across the region. The force’s four horses have helped search for missing children in Walsall, carried out anti-drug dealing patrols in Sandwell, targeted illegal e-bike riders in Birmingham, patrolled Wolverhampton city centre, protected football fans in Coventry and more.

The unit has also supported local crime reduction initiatives and other police forces with operations in their area, generating income to help fund the horses.

Sergeant Alex Hadley of the mounted unit said “people’s response to us has been phenomenal” said sergeant Alex Hadley from the West Midlands mounted unit.

“They’ve been so happy to see the horses and to speak to our officers who’ve been explaining the ways in which we’ll be using the horses in their area,” he said.

The section has also been “reminding hundreds of motorists” what to do when they see horses on the road.

“This includes sharing safety advice with the region’s bus companies along with council gritters and bin lorry drivers,” said sergeant Hadley.

“From speaking to hundreds of drivers, it’s clear that many motorists have never seen horses on the road, so are unsure how to respond correctly.”

He added that the aim is to “engage and educate drivers first”.

“But we will always enforce the law when safety is compromised. That can be public safety or the safety of our horses and riders,” said sergeant Hadley.

“We’re thankful to those who are following the rules and doing everything they can to prevent injuries. This includes bus drivers and council staff.”

A spokesperson for the force added that mounted unit officers have the same powers and equipment as officers on foot or in cars.

“This includes personal protective equipment, incapacitant spray, bodyworn video for recording evidence and radios for tracking their location and co-ordinating their response to an incident,” he said.

British Horse Society director of safety Alan Hiscox said while the society appreciates those who follow the Highway Code guidance, “there is still significant work to be done” to ensure the safety of all road users.

“Alongside working with key stakeholders such as the new West Midlands mounted unit, which is playing a very positive role in improving safety and understanding around horses on the road, we also encourage anyone involved in or witnessing an incident to record it via the Horse i app. This helps us to build a clear picture to drive positive change,” he said.

‘Excellent for increasing trust and confidence’: police welcome horses’ return after 26 years

Police horses have returned to the West Midlands after a 26-year break, in a move aimed at creating jobs and contributing to public trust and confidence.

This month West Midlands Police launched its new mounted section as the first five horses began patrols. The unit will comprise two sergeants and 12 constables; seven other fully trained police horses have been identified and are “undergoing extensive health checks” before moving to the region.

The news follows the announcement in March that Gloucestershire Constabulary’s mounted section would close, as part of plans to save £12.3m over 12 months. One of Gloucestershire’s horses, Bruce, has transferred to West Midlands Police. H&H has asked Gloucestershire Constabulary where the remaining five horses have moved to.

West Midlands Police assistant chief constable Mike O’Hara said it is a “moment in history for West Midlands” as horses are welcomed back to the region. The unit was disbanded in 1999.

“We have been working on this project for over a year and the plans have been carefully considered. We are confident that our mounted unit will generate income from loaning the horses to other forces and in support of this work, we’re also exploring sponsorship options that could help cover food and other expenses,” he said.

Mr O’Hara added that jobs for both police officers and staff have been created as part of the plans. The horses are staying in temporary homes around the region until the unit’s new stable Tally Ho!, in Edgbaston, Birmingham, opens in spring, which will be run by an equine stable manager, police staff grooms and an apprentice groom.

The horses will be involved in routine local policing and “ultra-high visibility patrols” at major events and weekends in town centres.

“Our recent experience at football matches has shown that just six police horses can manage crowds that usually take one police support unit equalling over 20 police officers. This means those highly skilled officers can be assigned to other roles, actively preventing and investigating crime or supporting victims,” said a West Midlands Police spokesperson.

“More importantly, we have taken learning from other forces, and this has helped us to understand that horses are an excellent tool in increasing trust and confidence. They have been used to great effect when supporting victims and witnesses and for getting people to engage and talk to us.”

Mr O’Hara said West Midlands Police is “really grateful for the help and advice” from World Horse Welfare, which has helped “ensure that our working animals will be well cared for, right from the start”.

A World Horse Welfare spokesperson told H&H police horses are “one of many examples of the horse-human relationship in action”.

“We believe that their safety and wellbeing should be a top priority, so we welcomed West Midlands Police approaching us for advice when they were first looking to bring horses back into their force,” he said.

“We look forward to engaging with them further to help them ensure that their newest recruits will thrive in their new home.”

Police force given headcollars to help catch loose horses in forward-thinking move

Officers from a rural crime police unit will now carry donated headcollars and leadropes following 130 incidents of loose horses in the past 12 months.

Lincolnshire Police has placed the equipment in stations across the county, and in every rural crime team response vehicle. The 20 headcollars and leadropes were donated by Cobbs Country Store to Bransby Horses, but as the charity often helps the police with loose horses, Bransby donated them to the force.

The headcollars are fitted with QR codes, which when scanned with a smartphone, will provide officers with information on how to approach, catch, and lead an equine, as well as contact details for Bransby Horses and other charities.

“This was after an idea raised during a meeting with the rural crime action team about best practice when handling loose and abandoned horses,” a Lincolnshire Police spokesperson said.

“During the last 12 months we have attended more than 130 incidents where horses have been reported loose. Officers can now use the headcollars and leadropes to keep the horses safe. When a horse roams away from where they should be, they can cause a serious risk to road users with the potential of a collision causing serious harm to all involved.”

The spokesperson added that when a horse is found loose officers, who also carry microchip readers, will try to locate an owner, but if an owner cannot be contacted, the force liaises with Bransby and other local contacts to provide temporary boarding.

“As part of Bransby’s continued efforts to work collaboratively with emergency services, they approached Lincolnshire’s rural crime team to share their knowledge and experiences and to gain a better understanding of how they could best support us with equine-related incidents,” said the spokesperson.

“Bransby Horses cannot respond to loose equines on a road, only assist, as they need the services of the police to make the area safe for all road users.”

PC Karen Irving, of the rural crime action team, said: “We’ve all been to jobs where we’ve used belts or similar to hold onto a horse”.

“While crisps or a packet of Polos sometimes works, this equipment will help secure a horse and reduce the chance of things going wrong. We are very grateful to Bransby and Cobbs Country Store for kindly donating the equipment,” she said.

“We’ve talked about horse abandonment and other issues and this idea was brought up as a positive way to contain loose horses and keep our colleagues safe. The work we do in the rural crime action team is aimed at keeping our rural communities safe, preventing and investigating rural crime and protecting the welfare of animals.”

‘Traumatised’ pony collapses after youths tied string around his throat in second attack

The owner of a riding school has spoken of her heartbreak and fear after three of her ponies were targeted in their field by youths, who tied string around their heads so tightly that one collapsed.

On 26 April at around 5pm staff at Eston Equitation Centre, Middlesbrough, saw three teenage boys in the distance in their field, which borders the Eston hills. Two of the boys were riding elderly 13.2h pony Billy, and one was on pony Teena, who is recovering from lameness.

“We could see the boys smacking Billy with a stick, and when they saw us coming they got off, climbed over fencing on to the hills, and took off on quad bikes,” Laura Storey, the centre’s owner told H&H.

“They look to be around ages 14-20, and seeing them hitting Billy was awful. When we got to the ponies we found that they had string tied round their faces and through their mouths, like makeshift halters. The string had cut into Billy’s face.”

A vet attended to Billy and Teena, and police were called.

“We hoped that would be the last of it, having caught them in the act, and we increased our field checks. We didn’t see anything else, then on 5 May when we went to check the ponies at 7.30am, we realised one pony, Jingles, wasn’t with the others,” said Laura.

“We found him choking with string tied around his throat and through his mouth. It was tied like a noose, so it had pulled tighter and tighter round this throat, he couldn’t breathe and he collapsed. It was so tight we couldn’t get a finger in between, but we managed to cut it off. He got up but collapsed again”

Jingles, an 11.2hh Welsh, suffered cuts to his mouth and has been “traumatised” by the event. He was treated by a vet, and Laura contacted the police again.

“We checked the rest of the ponies and they seemed ok, but we found large sections of the field’s outer fencing had been pulled down. We have outer and inner fencing, and we think they’d have tried to take the ponies if it hadn’t been for the inner fence,” said Laura.

“Later that day, at 5.30pm, we could see another a group of boys and girls in the field again, and we chased them down but some got away on quads, and some ran on to the A174.”

Laura shared what has been happening on Facebook in the hope word would spread to help keep the horses and ponies safe.

“I just don’t understand why this group is doing this. We are taking it in shifts to watch over the ponies at all times, including through the night. We are exhausted but I don’t know what the solution is. It’s been an absolute nightmare for us but we just want to make sure the horses and ponies are ok. It’s such a worry that they will come back,” said Laura.

“At first I didn’t want to put anything about it online, but I felt if more people are aware then there will be more eyes on the horses and ponies. It’s a large 20-acre field and takes an hour to walk the perimeter, and they all live out together.

“The trouble is because the field is on a hill, the group could always see us coming from the bottom and could get away. We hope if people are out walking on the Eston hills and see something happening then they can immediately let us know or phone the police.

“We’ve had lots of support, and people in the local community have been disgusted about what’s happened,” said Laura.

“It’s just heartbreaking, we are a riding school and our horses and ponies are family. They come to us and are never sold, so we have lots of retired or older ones. They should be safe in their own field. We bought the business in 2016, and have never known anything like this.”

A Cleveland Police spokesman said officers attended Eston Equitation and provided forensic, crime prevention, and safeguarding advice and the force’s equine officer will highlight the incidents at this month’s regional equine meeting.

“In the meantime, we would appeal to parents and carers to check what their children are doing while out of the house and to stress to them that police will identify and deal with anyone causing harm or suffering to animals.

“We would also appeal for anyone with information to contact Cleveland Police on the 101 number quoting ref 076245.”

‘I burst out crying’: happy tears as owner is reunited with pony stolen eight months ago

The owner of a 16-year-old pony who was stolen last summer said it feels “unreal” to be reunited, eight months later.

Miniature Shetland mare Maisey disappeared from her field in Castle Combe, near Chippenham, Wiltshire, on 12 July. Maisey’s owner Allison Wood found “scrabble” marks, footprints and tyre tracks, and believed someone had taken Maisey away in a van.

The RSPCA attended the scene, and asked HorseWorld for assistance with “one particular pony in very poor condition”.

“We were asked if we could collect a severely underweight Shetland pony who had been abandoned,” said HorseWorld head of welfare Sarah Hollister.

“We were already at capacity, with other rescues having been taken in just a few days before, but we knew we had to help.”

A HorseWorld spokesman added that Maisey was in a “shocking state”.

“Her winter coat was very fluffy but with further inspection, it was clear the mare was severely malnourished and emaciated, covered in lice and could be pregnant,” he said.

“The RSPCA arranged for an equine vet to attend the site to examine Maisey prior to being transported to ensure she was fit to travel. The pony was rushed to the safety of HorseWorld where she was carefully settled into their emergency care unit and given the immediate lifesaving treatment by the equine welfare and veterinary team.”

When RSPCA inspector Dan Hatfield processed the data from Maisey’s microchip, it was discovered that she had been reported as stolen.

“With a little more delving it quickly transpired that HorseWorld had shared a Facebook post about Maisey’s theft in July 2023. We immediately telephoned colleagues at the RSPCA and shared the amazing news that we believed we had identified not only the pony, but where she had originally come from too.”

Maisey was reunited with Allison on Wednesday (6 March).

“It feels unreal to have Maisey home. When Dan phoned I just burst out crying; I didn’t say anything. I’ve had people in the village crying when I’ve told them,” she said.

“Holly, her fieldmate, will be over the moon. But without the microchip, and the amazing work of everyone involved, we would have never got her back.”

Mr Hatfield said it is “absolutely wonderful to be part of bringing Maisey back home so many months after she was stolen”.

“When we rescued her in such a sorry state last week, we had no idea that she would turn out to be a much-loved, missing pet,” he said.

“This is a fantastic example of how vital it is that we microchip our pets – without this, Maisey may never have found her way back home to her owners, and I am so happy to witness them being reunited today. It was a special moment for us all.”

PC Jess Swanborough of Chippenham Neighbourhood Policing Team was there when Maisey was returned to Allison.

“It was so lovely to see Maisey come home and her owner was absolutely delighted to have her back safely,” she said.

“We are extremely grateful to the member of the public who reported their concerns to Avon and Somerset Police. We are so pleased this case has had a happy ending – it shows the importance of chipping your animals so if anything like this does happen, the chances of the animal being located and returned safely are much greater.”

Police horse recovering from injury in collision with car

A police horse is recovering from a “slight injury” sustained in a road traffic collision with a vehicle – as police appeal for witnesses or dashcam footage.

West Yorkshire Police issued an appeal for information yesterday (7 March) following the incident last Friday (1 March).

A police spokesman said the incident happened on Bradford Road, Tingley, Leeds, at 2.10pm and involved a Nissan car and Police Horse Ledston, who is based with the force’s mounted section at Carr Gate, Wakefield.

The spokesman confirmed that no people were injured in the collision. Ledston sustained a “very slight injury”, but the spokesman added that this was not anything he “won’t fully recover from”.

“Officers from the roads policing unit are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who may have dashcam footage to contact them,” said the spokesman.

British Horse Society (BHS) road statistics

The society’s annual statistics showed that three people and six horses died on the road in 2023, and 94 people and 86 horses were injured. Of the 3,383 incidents reported to the BHS 85% occurred because a vehicle passed too closely or too fast.

A BHS spokesman said the figures are a “stark reminder” that road incidents involving equestrians are continuing to happen around the UK – despite the Highway Code changes in 2022. In the Highway Code drivers are advised to pass horses at no more than 10mph, and at two metres’ distance.

Police horses help make terminally ill child’s ‘wishes come true’

A mounted police unit has made a terminally ill child’s “wishes come true” when they invited him to visit.

South Yorkshire Police’s operational support unit welcomed three-year-old Ely Fearnley and his family to Ring Farm, Sheffield, last week. Ely has an incurable brain tumour, but “like all three-year-olds is vehicle-mad and has a love of all things police”.

“Ely was diagnosed with his brain tumour last year and has been making memories with his family. Knowing the joy that meeting our four-legged colleagues can bring to children’s faces, we invited Ely and his family to Ring Farm,” said a South Yorkshire police spokesman.

“Ely, his older brother Guy, mum Vicki and dad Steven were greeted by our mounted department and traffic officers, horses and OK9 wellbeing dog Bear.”

During the visit Ely and Guy sat in the mounted unit’s horsebox and a traffic patrol car, and met some of the force’s “different modes of transport”, police horses Foggy, Stan, Woody and Sully.

“The giant boys were extremely gentle with Ely and Guy, and mounted officer PC Phil Reed explained what the horses enjoyed and how they helped police officers with their work,” said the spokesman.

“Ely was given a warrant card to show our commitment to him being part of the South Yorkshire Police family, and officers presented him with a police teddy bear.”

Mrs Fearnley said her family had an “absolutely lovely morning”.

Sheffield sergeant Tracy Spratt, who organised the visit, said the unit feels “extremely privileged to have met Ely and welcomed him and his family to Ring Farm”.

“Seeing the joy brought to Ely’s face was heartwarming. He is such a sweet boy, whose smile and courageous charisma could light up the world. We hope he’s able to make more fond memories with his family,” she said.

Hero police dog who inspired law to protect service animals dies aged 14

“Fabulous Finn”, the retired police dog who helped introduce greater protection for service animals, has died aged 14.

A spokesman for Finn’s handler Dave Wardell announced “with pain and sadness” that “our beautiful, brave, hero Finn” had died in his sleep on Thursday night (28 July).

Finn and his handler PC Dave Wardell, of Hertfordshire Constabulary, were stabbed by a youth while on duty in October 2016. Dave sustained an injury to his hand and Finn needed emergency life-saving surgery for serious wounds to his chest and head. He recovered and returned to service, retiring in 2017.

Although a 16-year-old was charged with actual bodily harm for stabbing PC Wardell, the attack on Finn was classified criminal damage, and following this Finn became the inspiration behind a new law to protect service animals, including police horses.

The Animal Welfare (Service Animals) Act, known as Finn’s Law, came into force in June 2019. Under the act, it is an offence to cause unnecessary suffering to a service animal. It also allows, in certain circumstances, to disregard a defendant’s claim that they were protecting themselves and so were justified in using physical force against a service animal, therefore causing it necessary suffering.

Finn’s Law part two was then introduced in England and Wales in 2021; the Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Bill. Under this, the maximum sentence for the worst kind of animal abuse was increased to five years in prison.

In 2018 Finn was awarded the PDSA gold medal, known as the animals’ George Cross. He made it to the finals of ITV’s Britain Got Talent in 2019.

“He was so loved by everyone and will be missed incredibly,” said Gemma, Dave’s wife.

“Thank you for your service Finn, now go and rest in peace our sweet boy, until we meet again.”

Desperate appeal to find missing miniature pony believed stolen

The owner of a much-loved family pony who has been missing for more than a week, believed to be stolen, has said she will not give up trying to find her.

Allison Wood’s miniature Shetland mare Maisey disappeared from her field in Castle Combe, near Chippenham, Wiltshire, between 8pm on 11 July and 2pm on 12 July. Maisey had been grazing with Allison’s horse Holly when she disappeared.

Allison, who has owned 16-year-old Maisey for 13 years, told H&H that she believes someone may have taken her over a stone wall.

“There are scrabble marks and someone’s trainer footprints where they have skidded at the edge of the field by the wall,” she said.

“At the end of the lane we found tyre tracks. She’s only 31 inches tall and we think someone has put her in a van.”

Allison said Maisey has a history of laminitis and needs to be carefully managed.

“She’s on minimal grass, and this year she has been doing amazing. She’s probably not worth a lot of money, and she can’t be ridden, but whoever has taken her doesn’t know that,” she said.

“She’s part of our family. When we have animals we keep them for their lifetime, and I won’t give up until we find her. She wasn’t really in view, and it’s horrible thinking that someone has been checking us out.”

“We just hope to get some good news, and that someone might leave her somewhere and we can collect her,” said Allison.

“We’ve done everything we can to make her too hot to handle.”

Man jailed for driving into woman with children on ponies

A man who drove his pick-up truck into a woman who asked him to slow down as he approached children on ponies has been jailed, and banned from driving for 10 years.

Jack David Brown, 27, of Leyburn Road, Hunton, North Yorkshire, was sentenced at Teesside Crown Court yesterday (28 June). He pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving, careless driving, and breaching a restraining order.

On 15 January 2022 at around 3pm Brown was driving along Leyburn Road in his new Ford Ranger pick-up truck. The victim, a woman in her 50s, was walking at the rear of a group of children on ponies and tried to get Brown to slow down.

A North Yorkshire Police statement stated that a witness said Brown was approaching at speed with lots of engine noise.

“The victim feared he would spook the ponies and put the three children in danger of being thrown off. The woman attempted to slow Brown by waving her arms towards him,” it read.

“As the vehicle got closer to the victim, who had stepped out slightly into the road to get Brown’s attention, he started to rev the vehicle’s engine. Due to this the victim stepped back towards the side of the road. Brown then turned his vehicle towards the victim and hit her, causing the victim to fall onto her back.”

Brown continued to his home without stopping at the scene.

“When the victim attended hospital, it was confirmed she had broken a vertebra in her back. The matter was reported to the police and a collision investigation was undertaken,” read the statement.

Although Brown initially pleaded not guilty, claiming the victim had “thrown herself” at his vehicle, he changed his plea to guilty before a trial was due to get under way.

He was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison, and disqualified from driving for 10 years, which begins on his release from prison.

PC Mike McVay of the Richmondshire and Hambleton response team said “only responsible and safe drivers should have a driving licence”.

“This is a privilege that has rightly been taken away from Jack Brown for a considerable time, as well as his liberty while he serves his prison sentence,” he said.

“His aggressive and dangerous driving caused serious injury to the victim. He also could so easily have placed the three children, the ponies and the other person who was with the group at great risk of injury or worse.

“I hope he and other drivers learn from this incident and the outcome at court. Dangerous driving will not be tolerated on our roads.”

Calls for riders to keep reporting crime despite feelings of ‘waste of time’

Riders and those living in rural areas are urged to keep reporting crime – even if it feels futile – as it helps police build a clearer picture of problems and how to tackle them.

The Countryside Alliance’s (CA) annual survey, published last month, revealed that 97% of the 2,016 people who took part said that rural crime was a “significant” issue in their community. A total of 49% did not think police take rural crime seriously, and 63% of those who did not report crime they experienced to police said they did not do so because “it was a waste of time”.

“Rural communities have for a long time been resigned to the fact they will receive a poorer level of response from the police when they have a crime committed against them and this is just unacceptable,” said Sarah Lee, CA director of policy.

“However, it comes against a backdrop of increasing and competing pressures on rural police forces, who are themselves facing challenges around funding.”

She added that as the review of the police funding formula gets under way this year, the CA is “urgently” calling on the Government to “level up rural policing, by increasing funding and resources”.

Essex Police, fire and crime commissioner Roger Hirst, who is also a horse owner, spoke to H&H ahead of Friday’s (10 March) launch of the county’s 2023–2026 rural crime strategy.

He said that tackling rural crime is “really important”, nodding to the reductions in specific areas of rural crime and the doubling in size of the rural task force in recent years, and stressed that they “need people to report crime”.

He described the CA’s statistics as a “hair-tearing” moment, as he “needs to get the message across” that reporting crime “really makes a difference and is not a waste of time”.

Referring to how the phrase “no further action” can be confusing, he said: “But actually, there will be further action around dealing with the data, understanding the patterns of crime and dealing with that.

“It’s just that your particular crime isn’t going to be the one that leads to the prosecution. I know that’s a really tricky message, I’ve spent a lot of time trying to get it across – people do have that sense of despair, that it’s a waste of time, why would I bother calling the police, it’s a lot of time spent waiting on 101.

“Please use the online website, give the data that you have and keep on doing so, and that way we actually get crime down as we can put in place either preventive patrols, hotspot policing or we can successfully pursue the prosecution.”

In terms of specific advice for equestrians, he reiterated the basics of keeping tack rooms locked, CCTV and being a member of local watch groups. The strategy contains plans to expand the pilot Essex Horsewatch scheme, where riders are extra “eyes and ears”, supporting police by reporting suspicious activity or crimes.

Action is happening elsewhere, too. New rural crime task force Northumberland Partnership Against Rural Crime has “big plans in the pipeline” after Northumberland Police secured a “landmark” £250,000 Safer Streets funding.

Police Scotland and some 35 organisations are also joining forces in the North East Partnership Against Rural Crime (NEPARC), which names equestrian incidents among the crimes it will focus on.

“The effect of offences within a rural environment can often be far-reaching and impact the victim and the wider community. As a partnership, we will encourage, implement and promote initiatives to prevent and reduce opportunities for such criminality,” said chief inspector Simon Reid, NEPARC chair.

‘Great sadness’ as police horse Rocky put down five months after road collision

A police horse has been put down five months after he was seriously injured in a road traffic collision.

Avon & Somerset Police announced with “great sadness” that police horse Rocky was put down on Monday (28 November).

Rocky and his rider were involved in the collision with a blue Ford Focus at Beggars Bush Lane, Bristol, on 8 July. The five-year-old gelding sustained a “significant leg injury” and was taken to an equine hospital. Rocky’s rider and the driver, a man in his 70s, were taken to hospital, but allowed home to recover.

A week after the collision the force said Rocky had been in “good spirits and had got over the first hurdle”, but that his road to recovery would “likely be a long one”.

In a statement yesterday (30 November) an Avon & Somerset spokesman said officers and grooms had “said their final goodbyes to Rocky” and made “every effort to make him comfortable” before he was put down.

“Many of you have followed us through Rocky’s journey to recovery and we thank you for your support. Although we had hoped to return Rocky to service, we’d aimed to at least get him to a stage where retirement to a field would have been an option .

“Our officers and grooms dedicated themselves to his rehabilitation, providing him with expert care. Although one of his injuries showed signs of improvement, Rocky did not respond to treatment as we’d hoped in relation to the other injury. This severely impacted on his quality of life, meaning even retirement to the field pain-free was no longer possible.”

The spokesman added that the mounted section is “truly devastated at this outcome”.

“We ask for your understanding during this incredibly difficult time,” he said.

“Thank you for your service, Rocky.”

Cinderella and ‘extensive entourage’ travelling in horse trailer make it to the ball

Cinderella did get to the ball, along with an “extensive entourage”, despite the fact their trip there did not go entirely according to plan.

Police have shared footage of officers discovering more than 20 people travelling in the back of a horse trailer, on Saturday, 18 November.

Warwickshire Police rural crime team officers pulled over the female driver of a 4×4 towing a trailer on the A422 near Upton House. The officers had been carrying out roadside checks of trailers and plant machinery, following an increase in local thefts.

A Warwickshire Police spokesman said when officers first spoke to the woman she confirmed she was not transporting any horses or livestock, and she was travelling to a ball nearby.

“Officers headed to the trailer to make note of any security marking or vehicle identification number [vin], so that checks could be conducted. While looking at the vin, one of the officers heard some shuffling and tapping coming from inside the trailer,” he said.

“Initially the officer was concerned that a horse must have snuck itself into the trailer, without the knowledge of the driver. It turns out on opening the trailer, some 20 attendees of the ball had opted to utilise the trailer as some sort of pre-ball party wagon transport.”

The force shared footage online of the passengers exiting the trailer and the spokesman said it was “apparent from the comments made to officers, that they had no understanding of how dangerous the situation was”.

“We can only be thankful that the officers hadn’t had to attend a very serious road traffic collision involving the vehicle and trailer,” he said.

“The 39-year old-driver was reported at the scene for several offences, while other officers facilitated Cinderella getting to the ball safely with her extensive entourage.”

The police spokesman told H&H the driver was reported for driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition and having unrestrained passengers in a trailer.

Horsebox driver seriously injured and horse dies in road collision

A horse has died and a woman remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries as a result of a road traffic collision between a horsebox and a 4×4.

Norfolk Police is appealing for witnesses to the incident that occurred yesterday (21 August) on the A47 Acle New Road, known as the Acle Straight, which runs between Acle and Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.

“Officers were called to Acle New Road at approximately 3.45pm following reports of a collision involving a black Range Rover and a red Renault Master horsebox, which was carrying a horse,” the spokesman said.

“Emergency services were called to the scene and a full road closure was put in place at the location. The road was reopened shortly before 11pm.

“The driver of the Renault, a woman aged in her 40s, was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, where she remains with life-threatening injuries. Sadly, the horse died at the scene, as a result of the incident.”

The spokesman added that the driver of the Range Rover, a man in his 20s, was taken to the James Paget Hospital, Great Yarmouth, with serious injuries. A passenger in the vehicle, a woman in her 20s, suffered minor injuries.

‘We want owners and yards to get involved’: police forces come to together to tackle equine crime

Collaboration and building relationships with horse owners are high on the agenda as police forces come together to tackle equine and rural crime.

In June, the National Police Chiefs Council’s “equine priority delivery group” (EPDG) met to consider what can be done to support the equine community under its new three-year strategy. The group comprises forces across the UK, with input from organisations including the British Horse Society (BHS), World Horse Welfare, and the RSPCA.

Objectives include reducing theft, tackling fly-grazing and neglect, and improving collaboration between regions to reduce cross-border equine crime.

The group’s national lead, inspector Korine Bishop of Hampshire Constabulary, told H&H the aim is to get forces working towards the same objectives.

“We’re considering what best practice looks like and how we can collectively support the equine community,” she said.

“We have prevention, intelligence and enforcement leads and we’ve also set up a sub-group around green-yarding, because we know there are issues with loose horses in certain areas of the country.”

Inspector Bishop hopes the group will bring a national approach to equine crime recording.

“Different forces use different recording systems so it can be difficult to get figures on, for example, tack theft, but as part of this group we’re working more collaboratively,” she said.

“Over the next 12 months, I want to create some national recommendations and a national equine operation that everyone knows as a brand,” she added.

A number of forces have also relaunched horsewatch schemes this year including West Yorkshire Police, as they look to build on relationships with horse owners.

“Not only will we be concentrating on crime prevention advice, we want to focus on incident reporting, how to gather best evidence and what we can do with it. We will look at local neighbourhood policing teams and make sure we have a contact in each team that can link in with the equestrian community,” said West Yorkshire Police sergeant Terri Green.

“We want to highlight things like the Pass Wide and Slow initiative and the importance of wearing high-vis. We want to make sure people log incidents with the BHS – while we’re the ones that can take action, the BHS needs these statistics to support the work we do.”

Sergeant Green plans to engage with owners via the West Yorkshire Police horsewatch Facebook page.

The new Scottish Partnership Against Rural Crime (SPARC) strategy launched for 2022–2025 with road safety, theft, horse interference and access on the equine agenda. Led by Police Scotland, SPARC’s 22 member organisations include local partnerships and the BHS – which played a leading role in the strategy.

Police Scotland national rural crime coordinator inspector Alan Dron told H&H the strategy will build on previous work, including the force’s road safety campaign Lose the Blinkers. Work will also be done around countryside access to build on relationships between riders and other users and tackle issues such as dog attacks on horses.

“The police, along with SPARC partners, will work on the priority issues and over the three years we’ll come up with different innovations and tactics that will constantly work towards achieving what the BHS has put in as indicators of success – such as more educated drivers, fewer accidents, uptake in protective marking schemes,” said Inspector Dron.

“We want owners and livery yards to get involved; if there is a bad bit of road and you want a Lose the Blinkers operation set up or for our teams to do theft marking, then speak to your local representative. That’s what we’re here for.”

BHS director of safety Alan Hiscox told H&H the society was “delighted” to play a leading role in the SPARC strategy.

“Building strategies like this and the EDPG will provide riders and owners with greater guidance on how to confidently implement prevention steps and reduce rural crime,” he said.

‘The bravest horse we had’: police horse retires after 13 years’ faithful service

A police horse who “won everybody’s hearts” during his 13-year career is to “put his hooves up and relax” in a happy retirement.

Sam joined Lancashire Police’s mounted branch as a five-year-old in 2009. The force’s horses are named after places in the county and Sam was given his official name, Elswick.

A Lancashire police spokesman said Elswick participated in an “endless” list of events during his career, including football matches, high-profile protests and marches, mutual aid events with other forces, musical rides, and “so much more”.

“Elswick always wants to please, even if a bit nervous he would put all his trust in his rider and would take them into any situation,” said the spokesman. “He is by far the bravest horse we had.”

The spokesman said Elswick was one of the force’s “go-to” horses for any event.

“No matter how big, you could always rely on him,” he said.

“One of his biggest events was Burnley homecoming, where he led the coaches through the crowds and he took it all in his stride. He also went on the pitch at Preston North End versus Blackpool when crowds invaded the pitch.”

Elswick has also taught countless officers to ride over the years.

“He has appeared on many riding courses and more often than not has been everyone’s first horse when they have joined the branch, showing them the ropes,” said the spokesman.

“He really is a true gent and will be greatly missed by all here at the mounted branch. At 18 years of age we recently discovered his heart wasn’t quite working the way it should be so it is time for him to enjoy retirement.”

Elswick has now joined fellow retired police horses at the Horse Trust in Buckinghamshire.

“It’s safe to say he will be hugely missed, but it’s time for him to put his hooves up and relax after protecting Lancashire for 13 years,” said the spokesman.

A Horse Trust spokesman said the charity is “honoured” to welcome Elswick.

“We look forward to providing him with a long and happy retirement following his faithful service to the community and Lancashire Police,” she said.

New stickers aim to prevent trailer theft following police crackdown

A police force is cracking down on horse trailer theft with a new initiative to deter criminals.

Nottinghamshire Police is providing “tamper-proof” stickers, which can be placed on the side of trailers. The stickers are designed to help highlight when a theft might be taking place as they say “Police – stop if seen moving between 10pm and 5am”.

“As legitimate users of the boxes typically only use the trailers to transport horses and livestock during the day, seeing them being moved at night can be deemed suspicious,” said a police spokesman.

Chief inspector Heather Maelor, the force’s rural crime lead, said Nottinghamshire Police has received several reports of this type of theft taking place as supply issues make trailers “very sought after”.

“This has been recognised as an issue across the region, so our officers have been making extra efforts to combat this theft trend and deter criminals. As part of this, we’ve introduced the stickers, which can then be placed on horseboxes and are difficult for offenders to take off quickly,” she said.

“We know that most of these offences take place overnight, at a time when these trailers aren’t typically in use, so they can offer a simple but effective way of alerting officers and the wider public that a crime is taking place.”

The spokesman added this was “just one of many” tactics Nottinghamshire Police is using to combat rural crime, with a “string of enforcement activity” that has resulted in the recovery of stolen trailers and subsequent criminal investigations. Officers have been visiting farms to hand out the stickers and offer security advice.

“We know that theft of trailers is a serious issue for members of the rural community that can impact livelihoods, so we have redoubled our efforts to do whatever we can to crackdown on this type of offending,” said Ms Maelor.

“As part of this, we have also relaunched the Nottinghamshire Police Horse Watch page on Facebook, where the public can get advice and support. It’s important that anyone who spots any suspicious activity, relating to horsebox thefts or other rural crime matters, reports it to the police straight away. We’d much rather come out and find that it’s nothing to worry about than not be there at the time.”

Nottinghamshire police and crime commissioner Caroline Henry said the force hopes to deter criminals from stealing horseboxes in the first place as part of efforts to tackle rural and wildlife crime.

“Part of our response is seeking to address the concerns that rural communities tell us about, which recently was concerns over a spate of horse box thefts,” she said.

“These stickers are a direct response to these concerns and demonstrate how we are continuing to listen and respond to residents’ concerns.”

A dressage league for serving and retired police and military officers has been hailed a success, with plans to expand next year.

The South West Dressage Military League, running under the umbrella of Forces Equine, was the idea of Avon & Somerset Police mounted officer Helen du Heaume, who created the prelim-level competition to give officers a boost following Covid. Qualifiers took place at venues including Chard Equestrian, Tumpy Green, and Leyland Equestrian Centre, followed by a championship, sponsored by Blue Chip, at Hartpury on 20 March.

PC Amy Huxtable won the league with her retrained racehorse Flou Artsisique, PC Lindsey Pendleton was second with Pepito Star S and PC Helen du Heaume third with Alvescot Euphoria. PC Jenna Hastings was fourth with Hi N Dri, RAF officer Alexander Hart fifth with her Fell pony Cokey, and retired officer Sue Hocking sixth on Miss Molly Mae.

“Coming out of Covid everyone has been lacking mojo and I thought it would be nice to get officers competing in their uniforms on their own horses. We had a great selection, from officers who haven’t competed before to former racehorses and one of our former police horses, Larry,” Helen told H&H.

“We can compete in uniform at Royal Windsor Horse Show in showjumping, but there isn’t a dressage competition where you compete in uniform, so this was about making something really accessible. I compete regularly in normal clothing but it was really nice putting on our uniform, representing our forces and doing something that we love, on our own horses. Although being in uniform meant both horse and rider had to be on their best behaviour!”

The league ran in conjunction with other dressage competitions, and Helen said venues and the public were very welcoming.

“People were really supportive, and at the championship people stayed behind to watch us and give us a round of applause during the lap of honour,” said Helen.

Helen, who also events, and is aiming for the Burghley Young Event Horse qualifier at Badminton with her Selle Francais mare Alvescot Euphoria, plans to run the league next year with the addition of a novice class.

“We hope to spread the word and make it bigger next year. It’s all about supporting each other and enjoying it.”

Criminal damage conviction for hunt sab who damaged car with children inside on fun ride

An anti-hunt activist who hit and damaged a car with young children inside on a countryside fun ride has been ordered to pay £200 to the victim.

Tracey Cox, also known as Tracey Clayton, pleaded guilty to criminal damage to the Land Rover, and was sentenced at Leicester Magistrates’ Court on 21 February.

The court heard Cox was one of a number of protestors at the ride, organised by the Cottesmore hunt near Oakham on 25 April last year. The driver of the Land Rover had his two children, both under the age of four, in the car as Cox struck it, damaging the bonnet.

“Activists from three groups, some of whom reportedly wore masks and balaclavas, had been present throughout the day’s proceedings,” a spokesman for the Countryside Alliance said.

“Members of the hunt witnessed some shouting abuse at participants, who had come from across the local area to take part in the event.”

Cox was given a six-month conditional discharge by magistrates. As well as the £200 to the victim, she was ordered to pay a £22 victim surcharge and £85 costs.

A spokesman for the Cottesmore said: “ We would like to extend our gratitude to Leicestershire Police for their professionalism throughout this ordeal. We are pleased with the outcome of this trial and believe justice has been delivered.”

He added: “Fun rides are an opportunity to welcome families from across the community to enjoy a day out in our beautiful countryside. We look forward to continuing these important events and watching them continue to grow in popularity.”

Polly Portwin, Director of the Countryside Alliance’s Campaign for Hunting said that although “animal rights extremist groups” such as those who targeted the fun ride are small in numbers, they can be “violent and abusive”.

“Members of the public out enjoying a day in the countryside should never have to feel intimidated,” she said. “On this occasion, the perpetrator has been brought to justice and we thank the police for handling this matter professionally.”

‘It breaks my heart’: man sentenced for punching police horse with beer can

A man who punched a police horse with a can of beer has been banned from attending football games for three years.

Peter Mincher, 43, of Lindsay Road, Hartlepool, was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal when he appeared at Bristol Magistrates’ Court on 31 January.

PC Helen du Heaume of Avon & Somerset Police was riding 13-year-old gelding Blaise, with three other mounted officers, at the national league play-off final between Hartlepool United and Torquay United at Ashton Gate Stadium on 20 June 2021.

PC du Heaume told H&H she and her colleagues were clearing the road, moving Hartlepool football fans from the middle of the highway.

“We were riding slowly, without using force, asking people to move out of the road. People had moved to the side and as I rode past, a man took his can of beer and punched Blaise on the side of his face,” she said.

“Blaise spooked and shuffled backwards, but once I put my leg on he moved forward and kept moving the crowd back, so he handled it pretty well. It was a such a volatile situation, even though the crowds were moving back, they were throwing missiles such as cans and flags. One of my colleagues got a flare thrown at her face.”

PC du Heaume said Mincher, who claimed in court that the horses were flighty and he felt like he was protecting himself, was captured striking Blaise on her body camera. The footage was sent to football intelligence officers, who were able to identify and later arrest him.

Blaise, who has been with Avon & Somerset Police for around six years and is one of the force’s most experienced horses, was not injured and PC du Heaume said he had suffered no lasting effects.

“These horses serve the public, they’re so loyal and obedient and it’s just a disgrace that a member of the public thinks that is acceptable. It breaks my heart,” said PC du Heaume, adding that the message to the public is that these incidents will not be tolerated.

‘If we can identify them and get them to court then 100% we will. That’s where the body cam is so helpful, now officers all wear body cameras so with incidents like this it makes it much easier for us to catch and prosecute people.”

Mincher was fined and ordered to pay costs and a victim surcharge totalling £1,215. He was given a three-year football banning order, which means he must not attend games for three years.

PC Tom Williams, one of the force’s football officers, said incidents of disorder had risen nationally this season.

“I’d like to reassure both fans and other members of the public that we continue to work closely with partners, including clubs, to make matches a safe environment for all,” he said.

“There is absolutely no place for any kind of violence in football and we will deal robustly with anyone who engages in such behaviour.”

‘No excuse’: police investigating after driver drove at and abused riders

A rider has spoken out about a frightening “unprovoked attack” in which a driver nearly reversed into her, opened her window and swore at her, then deliberately drove at her mare’s legs.

Emma Falango was riding her four-year-old Friesian mare Ellie-Sue, with Rachel Frost on her veteran mare Ria, on Chipping Sodbury High Street, Bristol, on Sunday morning (23 January) when a driver reversed out of a parking space, and nearly hit Rachel and Ria.

Emma, who was behind Rachel, told H&H the driver then drove forwards and reversed out again, nearly hitting Ellie-Sue. The driver then opened her window and swore at Emma and Rachel.

“After we went past, the woman reversed out and was behind us revving her engine, inches from Ellie-Sue’s back legs. She suddenly swerved, and as she did the car touched Ellie-Sue’s tail and she spooked into the road,” Emma said.

“I managed to pull Ellie-Sue up but she was jumping up and down on the spot and was terrified. We had to ride back to the yard and it was 20 minutes of hell. I always thank drivers when they’re going past but I couldn’t take my hands off the reins; by the time we got back Ellie-Sue was a ball of sweat.”

A passer-by who witnessed the incident gave Emma the car’s registration plate and Emma has reported it to the police and the British Horse Society.

“It was a completely unprovoked attack. I have a brain condition, encephalitis [a rare condition that causes inflammation] and if I had come off I could have died. I also keep thinking what if the car had hit Ellie-Sue, she is the nicest, kindest mare and we’ve got such a good bond,” said Emma.

“We live in a horsey area and the high street was really quiet as it was a Sunday morning. Although Ellie is young we often go out by ourselves or I’ll long-rein her and she is really good in traffic but this has undone all that hard work. She’s not been the same since it happened, we’re going to need to work on rebuilding her confidence but I’m frightened to go back on the road.”

Emma would like to see more action taken against dangerous drivers and believes they should have to attend education courses about driving around horses, and that more fines should be issued.

“There is no excuse for what happened, Ellie-Sue was covered in high-vis and there is no way you couldn’t see her,” said Emma. “Drivers need to be more respectful of horse riders and cyclists, at the end of the day we’re real people – and if we fall that could be a life gone.”

A spokesman for Avon & Somerset Police said officers are investigating the incident

“Officers received an online report that a motorist reversed out of a parking bay apparently unaware of two horses which were being ridden along the High Street near to the Spar. The woman driving the silver Audi TT reportedly verbally abused the riders and drove on close to the horses causing one to spook.

“The driver, any witnesses or anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage which could help is asked to call 101 and give the collision reference 2022/381.”

Ponies living in horrific conditions may have spent their lives ‘imprisoned’

A couple have been told had it not been for their age and medical needs, they would have been going “straight to prison” for allowing ponies to suffer in “barbaric” conditions “all their lives”.

Jack Carter, 75, and his wife Barabara, 72, of Bank Bridge, Tarleton, Lancashire, who bred, showed, and kept horses for 60 years, pleaded guilty to three animal welfare offences, when they appeared at Lancashire Magistrates’ Court on 20 January.

The pair admitted to causing unnecessary suffering to four Welsh ponies by failing to provide “adequate or any” hoof care, adequate or any treatment for thrush and dermatitis, and confining the ponies in a “filthy unsanitary” environment for a prolonged period resulting in “severe prolonged psychological suffering”.

They also admitted to causing unnecessary suffering to a Welsh section A mare by providing inadequate dental care leading to ulceration to her mouth and trauma to her tongue, and failing to provide veterinary treatment to another mare’s “painful” eye condition.

An RSPCA spokesman said the charity was called in March 2021 to investigate the premises after a member of the public raised concerns about the welfare of a pony believed to be in the Carters’ care. When RSPCA inspector Vicki McDonald visited on 22 March she could see a “run-down” stable block behind the couple’s house but was unable to access this without permission.

In the following days Ms McDonald made several attempts to contact the Carters by telephone to arrange a visit, but on a number of occasions Mr Carter messaged back and said he was unable to show the inspector around the property, citing “various reasons”, or failed to make contact with her.

Ms McDonald was concerned Mr Carter was avoiding a visit so she returned to the area to view the stable from a nearby public footpath and saw that a green sheet and wire mesh now covered the doorway of the “dilapidated” stable she had seen on her first visit. She believed there was a pony inside, who Mr Carter was “trying to hide” so Ms McDonald arranged a formal visit to the property with Lancashire Police on 7 April.

During the visit Ms McDonald asked to see inside the stable at the back of the house and Mr Carter “reluctantly” agreed. Ms McDonald told the court of her “shock” at what she found in that building and three other “ramshackle” stables.

“Inside the first stable I found a grey pony in horrendous environmental and physical condition. I had never seen anything like it in my entire career,” Ms McDonald said.

“The pony was standing on top of deep rotting litter that had built up so much, it reached the top of the stable door. The pony was unable to fully stand up and its back protruded through a hole in the stable roof. In addition I saw the pony had severely overgrown feet beyond anything I had seen before. The hooves extended out and corkscrewed. Further rotting litter was piled up in front of the stable, preventing the stable door from opening.”

Ms McDonald said the next stable contained a chestnut pony, and across from that box were two more grey ponies.

“The grey ponies’ behaviour was particularly disturbing. They seemed very stressed and erratic. I noticed that all the ponies had matting to their coats. They also had patches of sore skin, most likely from having no option but to lie in their own filth,” she said.

“To say the physical and environmental conditions of these ponies was shocking is a gross understatement. They also stood on deep rotting litter piled as high as the stable doors inside and also in front of the doors, preventing any possibility of the doors opening. They all had horrendously overgrown hooves that had started to corkscrew. There was very little room for them to move around or even stand normally. Their backs reached the stable roofs.

“It was obvious that none of these ponies had been out of their stables or been seen by a farrier for a very considerable amount of time, if at all. It was my opinion that based on what I had seen, it was highly possible that these ponies had been in these stables all their lives.”

An independent vet attended but advised that the four ponies, thought to be aged between six and seven years old, should be put down to “end their suffering”. She noted in her report that the ponies were neglected in “every aspect of basic requirement”, and the conditions they were kept in were “extremely barbaric”.

“The severe lack of care and level of suffering endured by these ponies was prolonged, wholly avoidable and totally inexcusable. It was heartbreaking to find them in such a neglectful state and for them, after such an awful life, to be beyond saving,” said Ms McDonald.

“These ponies were kept stabled within a few feet of the back door to the Carters’ home address. They would have seen them daily and their plight would have been ignored daily. The extreme level of neglect I witnessed in this case is unlikely to ever be surpassed and will remain with me.

“They were imprisoned in cramped, ramshackle and rotting conditions, forced to live and lie amongst their own faecal matter. They could not stand naturally, they could not behave naturally, graze, exercise or socialise, they were not provided with any of the necessary veterinary or farrier care they urgently required and they could not escape their confines or be accessed in an emergency. In my opinion the neglect of these ponies was physically, environmentally and psychologically cruel and this had clearly been their existence for a considerable period of time.”

Mr Carter told the RSPCA the couple had more ponies stables a short walk away in Liverpool Road and when the charity visited five were found. They had access to food and water but were in a “neglected state” and had a “range” of health issues.

The ponies were signed over into the care of the RSPCA and taken for an emergency veterinary examination. Four were found to be suffering and put down. The remaining pony will be rehabilitated and rehomed.

PC Sean Dalby, a wildlife officer for Lancashire Police, said it was a “shocking case of needless cruelty” that should not have happened.

Mr and Mrs Carter were banned from keeping animals for life. They were sentenced to 12 weeks’ imprisonment, suspended for two years. They were ordered to pay £500 costs each.

During sentencing, the magistrates heard the Carters had been given the opportunity to work with the RSPCA on previous occasions but they did not seek that help. The presiding magistrate said the case was “extremely distressing.

“This crosses the custody threshold for the reason of prolonged ill-treatment and neglect which resulted in a high level of suffering. The only reason the sentence was suspended is to take into account the defendants’ medical needs and age. If it was not for these factors you would be going straight to prison,” he said.

PC Sean Dalby, a wildlife officer for Lancashire Police, said it was a “shocking case of needless cruelty” that should not have happened.

“I am happy the court took the matter so seriously and the south rural task force will continue to investigate and target animal cruelty offenders. We would like to thank the RSPCA with this case and will continue to support them,” he said.

Filly – and companion – taken to safety after mare killed on dual carriageway

A loose pony has been killed in a road traffic collision on a dual carriageway, while two others rescued from the scene uninjured are recovering in the care of a welfare charity.

A mare who was involved in a collision with a car and a lorry died on the A11 northbound at Red Lodge, Suffolk, at about 11.55pm on 10 January. No occupants of the vehicles were injured.

A Suffolk police spokesman said when the mare’s body was being recovered, two more ponies were loose on the carriageway and police made “several attempts” to lead them into a secure field during the night, and eventually achieved this at 8.20am.

Redwings was contacted by police after officers were unable to identify an owner for the ponies. Two-year-old miniature Shetland mare Mariah and cob filly Carey, who is thought to be the daughter of the mare killed in the accident, were signed over to Redwings and taken into the charity’s care.

“These poor ponies were quite distressed, in particular the youngster who lost her mother in the accident,” said Julie Harding, Redwings senior field officer. “Naturally, after such an ordeal, she didn’t want to leave her friend’s side.

They were both underweight and had lice and quite scabby skin which they’re now being treated for. However, they are doing really well and are very sweet.”

Julie added that the Shetland was named Mariah after the lead police officer at the scene.

“We are very grateful to them for getting them off the road and to safety,” she said.

A Redwings spokesman said as with all new arrivals at the charity, Mariah and Carey, will remain in quarantine for a minimum of three weeks. The pair are not available for rehoming at the moment.

‘It would have killed me’: horse and rider traumatised by terrifying dog attack

A rider who was attacked by an out-of-control dog believes he would have been killed had he not been carrying a whip.

Adam Walker was returning from a hack on his 23-year-old gelding Jaws, with Laura Evans riding rescue pony Tess, on 1 January, when they saw a man who appeared to be looking for a dog at Camp Hill, Nuneaton, in Warwickshire.

“We were at the top of the hill and eventually I saw a Staffordshire bull terrier appear beside the man and I thought he had hold of it, so we started making my way down the hill,” Adam told H&H.

“All of a sudden the dog came charging at us flat out from 30 feet away. It was completely out of control and baring its teeth.”

Adam said the dog was biting at Jaws’ legs.

“Jaws went berserk and I came off,” he said. “Then the dog turned on me while I was on the floor. I still had hold of Jaws and I hit the dog with my whip, and it went back to Jaws and was jumping up at his stomach and biting his legs. All that dog wanted to do was kill, you could see it in its eyes.

“Jaws then double-barrelled the dog, I heard a crack and the dog whimper. At first I thought Jaws had broken his leg, but I think it was the dog who was injured. It then ran towards Laura and Tess, but Laura was able to get off and had her whip in her hand and the dog ran off.”

Adam said although the dog’s owner apologised and asked if they were ok, he made no attempt to get hold of the dog during the attack, and he left the scene after it happened.

“I busted my ankle and had rip marks on my coat, but Jaws thankfully wasn’t badly injured. He had some scratches but because he was kicking out I don’t think the dog could get a proper hold of him,” he said.

“We walked the horses home and immediately reported it to the police and the British Horse Society.”

Adam and Laura have been out with Jaws and Tess since the incident, but Adam said he cannot describe how “traumatised” he was by the attack.

“I swear had I not had my whip and if that dog had got its mouth round my neck, it would have killed me. It meant what it was doing and would have shown no mercy,” he said.

“Every time Jaws hears a dog barking he jumps and he seemed really traumatised for the first few days after the incident but he’s getting better.”

Adam would like to see tougher laws surrounding out-of-control dogs.

“The Government has to do something about irresponsible dog owners and dangerous dogs. I read about France bringing in certificates to own horses, and while I think it would be great to have that for horses here, we should also be doing it for dogs,” he said.

“I’m glad Laura and Tess weren’t injured, especially after all the hard work we’ve put into Tess, but nobody should be put in that position.”

A spokesman for Warwickshire Police said the force was aware of the incident. Anyone with information should contact 101, quoting incident 207 of 1 January.

‘He loves showing off his dressage skills’: newly qualified police horse officially named

A newly qualified police horse who “loves showing off his dressage skills” has officially been named.

On 30 December, Irish draught Ben was renamed Redcliffe by Avon and Somerset Police chief constable Sarah Crew at an informal ceremony.

Redcliffe joined the police in February 2021 from Ireland aged six and underwent training with PC Helen De Heaume. He will now continue his education with PC Amy Huxtable.

The force has a tradition of naming its horses after places within Avon and Somerset. Redcliffe takes his new name after the historic area of Bristol, which is home to ancient landmarks including the medieval St Mary Redcliffe Church, where the gelding’s naming ceremony took place.

“Redcliffe shares the same colour in his coat as the red sandstone cliffs which line the southern side of the Floating Harbour,” said a police spokesman.

“A friendly and patient horse, Redcliffe has already proven himself to be excellent at interacting with the public with a love for attention from anyone willing to give him a pat while on patrol. He also loves showing off his dressage skills. He has already helped the mounted section patrol all areas of Avon and Somerset.”

The ceremony was attended by vicar Canon Dan Tyndall, PC Tristan Smith with police horse Somerset, and officers from the Bridewell neighbourhood policing team.

“Naming our horse Redcliffe is a tribute to one of our most historic and popular areas of Bristol,” said mounted section sergeant Hannah Clarke

“Having worked extremely hard during his first 10 months with us, it’s a delight to see Ben move into the new year with his official name. As he now steps forward into the next stage of his career as a police horse, we are confident he will make the area after which he is named extremely proud.”

A police force’s mounted unit whose future was in doubt will remain in operation thanks to the value it brings – but concerns have been raised about the unit’s “harmed reputation”.

In July a review of Gloucestershire Constabulary’s mounted unit was launched by the office of the police and crime commissioner (PCC), following the appointment of the new PCC Chris Nelson. During a meeting in September, the future of the unit was on the agenda; Mr Nelson said the review had found the current model was “not optimal”, and further work was requested.

This week, Mr Nelson backed the case to retain the mounted unit, which has six horses.

“I’m clear that the mounted section should continue as is and be focused more on the area of neighbourhood policing, night-time economy, [and] things like missing people – in addition to the role that people often talk to me about, which is public order, but that’s actually quite a small part of their business,” said Mr Nelson.

The force’s horses are currently used for patrolling the streets of Cheltenham and Gloucester on Friday and Saturday evenings. They were also involved in a number of high-profile operations and investigations including a mutual aid contribution at COP26, and “providing reassurance” following stabbings in Walton Cardiff in October, and other community concerns in Frampton on Severn.

But Mr Nelson said he wants to see more “tangible intelligence” emanating from the mounted unit’s patrols, and that there are no plans to expand the unit.

“I feel it has taken an unacceptably long period of time for the unit to get up to full operational strength and capability, which in my view has harmed its reputation,” he said.

Gloucestershire Constabulary chief constable Rod Hansen said it was “very good news” to know where the force stands in relation to the mounted unit.

“Mounted units and their officers are six times more visible in our communities than any other police asset. We know that they tend to draw a large crowd, in a positive way, and we also know that they are of course very useful for large gatherings of people, whether that’s a passive or hostile crowd,” he said.

“What we want is just enough of all the capabilities that help us to keep the community safe from harm; whether that’s road policing vehicles, specialist firearms teams, patrol officers or police community support officers. We have a whole range of skills and capabilities, they’re all important. The sklll is to make sure we have just the right amount so we’re not overspending on it at the expense of something else.”

Mr Hansen said were officers not on horses, they would be patrolling the community in another way.

“It just happens to be more visibly on the back of a horse opposed to a car, where quite often we hear from the public that, ‘We might see a police officer but they’re zooming by in a car and there’s no change to engage’. Yes they come at some price, but it’s more about the value that they bring.”

Riders sought to help fight crime in ‘neighbourhood watch on horseback’ scheme

A police force has launched a “neighbourhood watch on horseback” in the hope of reducing wildlife crime.

The rider volunteer scheme was launched this month by Wiltshire Police following 18 months of development by the force’s rural crime team and volunteer organisation Citizens in Policing, with input from Horse Watch and Farm Watch. The scheme aims to recruit horse owners to help report unusual or criminal activities they see while hacking out.

Citizens in Policing supervisor Sarah Holden said it was “heartening” to see the number of people who thought the scheme would be a “positive step in the fight against crime” in rural areas and were eager to be involved.

“The concept is simple. In a large rural county there are many people who own horses and hack across the bridleways and countryside in places that may not easily be accessible by a vehicle. We have asked them to volunteer as a neighbourhood watch on horseback and report back on any unusual activity they see,” she said.

“Typically, riders will be looking out for any signs of wildlife crime such as poaching or raptor persecution, general theft of livestock, feed or fertiliser, and particularly heritage crimes.”

To take part, volunteers must own a horse and be insured. In return they will be trained on what to look out for, how to report any unusual or criminal activities, and conflict management. Volunteers will wear clearly marked fluorescent tabards and bridle markings displaying “Wiltshire horse rider volunteer”.

“We have been fortunate to receive generous funding from Historic England for the fluorescent items,” said PC Emily Thomas of the rural crime team.

“This month one of our PCSOs will visit the stables and livery yards of those who have become volunteers to do a spot check and hand out the tabards. We are also training those who want to stamp tack to help protect items that could be stolen.”

Heritage England’s Nick Croxson said the organisation is excited about the introduction of the scheme.

“It will be great to have volunteers out on horseback supporting the rural community, able to keep an eye on Wiltshire’s historic places, and to recognise and report heritage crime,” he said.

Owners who want to volunteer should contact the Citizens in Policing or rural crime team, or complete the online application form.

‘An absolute soldier’: heartbreak as police horse put down following surgery

A mounted section has paid tribute to a police horse who was “perfect in every way”.

South Yorkshire Police announced 15-year-old gelding Hoober was put down on 30 November following emergency surgery at Rainbow Hospital two days prior, after he was found to have a fatty tumour in his small intestine.

A spokesman for the force said Hoober had put in a “stellar decade of service” since joining in 2011 and was happy to be ridden by all officers in the mounted unit.

“He could turn out to every occasion,” said PC Lindsay Crew. “Because of his lovely manners he could be used at the football, protests, ceremonial events and as mutual aid for other forces.

“He was an absolute soldier and did his job perfectly, in fact he was perfect in every way. He wasn’t scared of anything and as well as bringing on other young horses he helped bring on inexperienced officers who joined the unit too.”

Less than a year after joining the force Hoober worked on three legs of the Olympic torch relay and attended the capital for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. He was a veteran of Doncaster St Leger meetings, worked on a number of protests and spent time on mutual aid around Newcastle and Middlesborough.

“He was characterful, cheeky and very good with all the grooms and officers,” said Lindsay, adding it was his cheeky nature that made him one of the more mischievous members of the team at the stables in Ring Farm, Cudworth.

“He was definitely the escape artist of the stables. He was the Houdini of all horses and he could open any door.”

The spokesman added police horse Hoober will be sadly missed by all the South Yorkshire Police daily.

“We thank him for his long and loyal service,” said the spokesman.

‘Horse riders have a right to be free of dangers on the road’: police highlight footage of poor driving

Police have shared “shocking” footage of drivers including one who overtook a horse and rider too fast and close, and must sit a driver education course.

Vision Zero South West, a road safety partnership made up of organisations in Devon and Cornwall including the emergency services and councils, released videos submitted to Devon & Cornwall Police via the force’s Operation Snap initiative. This allows members of the public to submit video footage of traffic offences.

Superintendent Adrian Leisk, Alliance strategic lead for roads policing, said the examples captured on camera show some “really poor driving”.

One clip shows a driver overtaking a horse and rider at speed, on the B3285 Penhallow, Cornwall, which Mr Leisk said he was “really keen to highlight”. In this case the driver was not prosecuted but agreed to sit a driver training course instead.

“Dashcams are not the sole reserve of vehicle users – we can accept footage from vulnerable road users, including pedestrians, riders, cyclists and motorcyclists,” Mr Leisk.

“Horse riders, like cyclists, have a right to be free of the dangers posed by road users such as these. I’d like to remind drivers when overtaking cyclists or horses you must give them at least 1.5m of space and reduce your speed significantly when doing so, as the animals may react to danger and behave unpredictably, placing the rider at increased risk.

“If it isn’t safe to overtake, please wait. Is it worth risking another human life to save a few seconds? If you place someone’s life in danger, there’s a strong chance you will end up being reported to us and facing the consequences.”

“There’s no excuse for anything less,” she said. “Together with National Highways, my office has funded 170 dashcams to be distributed to companies across Devon and Cornwall that regularly travel around the region. This gives us 170 extra pairs of eyes on our roads to capture dangerous drivers and take action against them through Operation Snap.

“With more people watching, the chances of bad drivers getting caught will increase. I hope this makes motorists more alert and in turn, will make our roads safer for everyone.”

Future of mounted police unit in question pending review outcome

The future of a police force’s mounted unit re-established five years ago could depend on the outcome of a review into the section – as the “unique resource” needs to become “more cost-effective”.

The office of the police and crime commissioner (PCC) for Gloucestershire announced a review of Gloucestershire Constabulary’s mounted unit in July, following the appointment of the new PCC Chris Nelson. At the time the office said “despite considerable academic and anecdotal evidence” in support of Gloucestershire’s Constabulary’s move to revive its mounted section in 2016, “many were opposed”.

“I know there are many who are of the opinion that the money devoted to the mounted section could be better spent elsewhere, but there are at least equal numbers in favour and I have to keep an open mind,” said Mr Nelson in July.

“At first glance, there are pros and cons for both sides of the argument but I don’t believe in making decisions based on knee-jerk reactions. I much prefer to study the data and then reach an informed decision based on the facts.”

At a police and crime panel meeting last month the future of the mounted unit was on the agenda, with the PCC telling the panel that the initial review found the current model was “not optimal” and further work has been requested. The PCC was of the view that the current service was more of a “neighbourhood police service” supporting reassurance and problem-solving activity when required, but the review of the unit was “not currently a priority”.

A spokesman for the PCC’s office told H&H the review remains ongoing.

Shocking near-miss video shows dangers riders face on the roads

An owner has shared a terrifying video of a near-miss in which brakes can be heard screeching before a car mounts the verge on the wrong side of the road as it passes her horse.

Niamh Wykeham-Martin was leading eight-year-old gelding Sully, who was being ridden by her 11-year-old sister Izzy, on Callis Hill Road, Wanborough, in Swindon yesterday (22 September) as they returned to their yard.

In dashcam footage captured by Niamh’s partner Matt Lane in the car following them, a loud screech can be heard before a BMW overtakes. Sully can be seen spinning round and moving to the left as the car passes and continues along the road.

“The road goes into a dip and the car came flying down the hill behind us. The driver of the BMW started breaking as soon as he saw my partner’s car and then he had to swerve to move out of the way,” Niamh told H&H.

“Sully spooked when he heard the sound of the brakes and really panicked. I’m just so grateful there wasn’t an oncoming car because the driver had nowhere to go and somebody would have been seriously hurt.”

Niamh got Izzy off Sully, and Matt followed the BMW in order to get the driver’s details.

“A driver in front saw what happened in their rearview mirror and stopped up ahead, which made the BMW driver stop. Matt got there and asked the driver of the BMW what he was doing. The driver said sorry but he didn’t seem sympathetic or bothered, he just wanted to get on his way,” said Niamh.

“Izzy was really upset and Matt took her back to the yard. I led Sully but every car that passed us after that made him stop and spin round.”

Niamh reported the incident to the police and the British Horse Society.

“It’s such a shame as we were so close to home and cars that had passed us before slowed down and gave us space. Sully has always been so good on the road and loves hacking, but this has really panicked him and I’m still shaken up. I think we’re going to have to do a lot of work to get him comfortable around cars. Izzy has ADHD and riding Sully has been really good for her but she is really worried about getting back on,” said Niamh.

A Wiltshire Police spokesman told H&H the force is investigating the incident and will keep those involved updated as the investigation progresses.

Plans for New Forest speed cameras to save animals’ lives

Drivers are playing “Russian roulette” with animals’ lives in the New Forest, as calls are made to install average-speed cameras.

Thousands of people have signed petitions asking for the cameras to be installed at Roger Penny Way, following a number of fatal collisions involving multiple animals. The first petition, created by Gilly Jones of the New Forest Roads Awareness group, asked the New Forest District Council (NFDC) to support the installation of cameras. The petition was open to New Forest residents between January and September and received 3,557 signatures.

A second petition, open to the general public, was created by commoner Sarah Weston after her four-year-old gelding Juma was killed on Roger Penny Way in August. The petition, which is still open and can be signed here, received more than 50,000 signatures in 10 days and has been submitted to the authorities. It is hoped a feasibility study could be launched to show the need for the cameras, but this will need funding.

From 1 January to date, nine ponies and three donkeys have been killed in the New Forest; six more ponies and three donkeys have been injured and had to be put down.

“Since Juma died, there have been several more accidents and time is of the essence. Drivers are playing Russian roulette with our ponies,” Ms Weston told H&H.

“There is a lot of talk but not enough action. This is a national park and a national issue. We need the feasibility study to happen quickly and efficiently, and we need to examine the results carefully so we know what we’re up against. If the study finds the cameras will work sufficiently, then we need them on these dangerous roads.”

New Forest head agister Jonathan Gerrelli told H&H the topic of average-speed cameras has been raised by the verderers and commoners several times over the last five years. He said meetings were held with the police, but at the time infrastructure and technology were issues, such as the signal required for the cameras to operate, and the costs involved in installing and maintaining the cameras.

“We felt average-speed cameras would be a way of helping with the animal accident issue, but at the time it was not as simple as we first hoped or imagined it might be. There are a lot of different bodies and authorities that need to come together, but there is quite a push at the moment to go that next step. Technology has improved and installing cameras is something the different Forest bodies are behind,” he said, adding that the verderers have agreed to help fund the feasibility study.

A spokesman for the NFDC told H&H the council would support an initiative that reduces speed on Roger Penny Way, but added that the district council does not have the authority to administer enforcement activities on the public highway. The spokesman confirmed the council will debate Ms Jones’s petition, and will “undoubtedly feature” Ms Weston’s petition within the debate.

Councillor Russell Oppenheimer, Hampshire County Council’s executive member for highways operations, told H&H the county council is aware of Ms Weston’s petition, but that average-speed cameras would require the full support of Hampshire Constabulary, which is responsible for speed enforcement. He added that any scheme would need to be operated by the force on a full recovery cost basis.

“Should they support this, there would need to be further discussions between various agencies, and a specialist feasibility study undertaken before any final decision can be made,” he said.

Hampshire Constabulary confirmed to H&H the force has been engaged in talks with parties including the NFDC and the verderers in the past two years about average-speed cameras, but said there is currently “no policing justification” or funding opportunities to support this.

“There are a number of local partners involved in making such a decision, including the NFDC, Hampshire Constabulary and the police and crime commissioner – in consultation with the New Forest verderers. It is not the sole responsibility of Hampshire Constabulary, but a partnership approach,” said the police spokesman.

“Previously, we have worked in partnership with organisations including the National Park Authority, Forest Rangers and Commoners Defence Association to raise awareness of animals killed by collisions in the New Forest. There are a number of community speed watch groups, which operate using equipment supplied by the NFDC, and are focused on education and a visible presence in the area, allowing for the gathering of evidence of offending which may lead to consideration of enforcement action.”

Hampshire police and crime commissioner Donna Jones told H&H she had spoken with the Hampshire Constabulary rural crime team and Now Forest policing team in relation to concerns around speeding and animal road deaths.

“Any solution will need the cooperation of the highways authority and the NFDC, so it is important that all agencies work together to explore all feasible options in order to determine the right way forward,” she said.

“I am in contact with the official verderer with regards to next steps.”

A horsebox towing a makeshift trailer with a combined total of five horses on board was pulled over by police, having been spotted on one of the UK’s busiest motorways.

Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit spotted the contraption on the M1 last Thursday (2 September), sharing pictures of the get-up on social media with the hashtag “#wow”.

Images appear to show a van-style horsebox towing a flatbed trailer, which had the body of another old horsebox or trailer strapped on top.

Police said there were four horses in the front vehicle and one in the rear trailer.

Officers pulled the driver over, and a safer vehicle was called to take the party on their way.

“M1. No, an old horsebox, rachet-strapped to the bed of a trailer, is not acceptable — even more so with a total of five horses being transported. Plus a massive oil leak and an expired licence,” tweeted the Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit Twitter account.

“Not a quick job but seized, alternative transport sorted and road safety improved.”

A Derbyshire police spokesman told H&H that the driver was reported for traffic offences.

‘Someone must know something’: #findourfoal appeal to find missing filly

A desperate appeal has been launched to find a newborn foal who it is believed has been taken from her field.

Welsh section D filly Bartonhill The Prettiest Star, born on 24 August, disappeared from her field in Holsworthy, Devon, sometime between Saturday evening (28 August) and Sunday lunchtime (29 August).

Owner Nikki Tozer told H&H Star had been in the field with her mother Rhonda and Nikki’s herd of 12, including other mares and foals.

“I went to the field on Sunday and couldn’t see Star. I phoned a friend and we spent hours searching for her. We looked in hedges, ditches, and everywhere we could think of. I came to the conclusion she must have been taken,” she said.

“Rhonda is a first-time mum and I don’t think she knows what’s going on. But she’s obviously distressed, and her milk will dry up soon.”

Nikki had a professional drone pilot visit the field on Monday to help with the search but there were no signs of Star, and as of today (2 September) no information or sightings have been reported.

“I phoned the police and we’ve set up a Facebook group to try and make as many people aware as possible that she’s missing using the hashtag #findourfoal. People have been changing their profile picture to her picture and sharing the page,” said Nikki.

“I’m absolutely distraught. Someone must know something, and I can only hope they will feel guilty, do the right thing and just put her back. Time is running out and we need her home.”

Star is light chestnut with a star on her head, snip on her nose and has two white socks on her hind legs.

A spokesman for Devon & Cornwall Police said anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting crime reference CR/074893/21.

Police release video of driver who ignored rider’s hand signals to slow down

Police have released a video of a driver “hurtling” past a rider on the road in a plea for motorists to slow down for horses following a series of near misses.

Nottingham Police shared the clip which shows a driver ignoring rider Rachael Wilsey’s hand signals as she asked the vehicle to slow down on the B1403 by Misterton and Ginrley-on-the-Hill in June.

Rachael, who was riding her nine-year-old gelding Oscar, said she could tell the driver wasn’t slowing down from about 50 metres away.

“At the point of realising she wasn’t adjusting her driving at all, I put my arm out and slowly waved it up and down signalling for her to slow down. She didn’t respond and was completely oblivious,” she said.

“Drivers should pass a horse and rider at 15mph and leave at least a car’s width between their vehicle and the horse. We think this driver went past us at about 55mph. I drew breath and was just praying she would slow down. It was really frightening because you have no idea what your horse is going to do.”

Rachael added that non-horsey people don’t realise that horses can jump sideways, into the path of a vehicle or away from it.

“If a 660kg horse like Oscar jumps and lands on someone’s bonnet then it’s going to kill the driver. It was absolutely awful and I just wish drivers would slow down and be more responsible. It just takes 30 seconds to get past and I’d ask drivers not to accelerate until they have fully gone by a horse,” she said, adding it was the second bad experience she had that day.

“I have to go on the road to get to the bridleway. We had just left the yard when another driver came past too fast. James [Rachael’s husband] waved at him to slow down but he just shouted abuse out of his convertible.

“Oscar isn’t a spooky horse and he was very good on the road until last year when a truck sped up before letting us past. It went through a big puddle and the sound of that scared him. That time he leapt away from the vehicle. It took about two months with a semi-professional rider before he could go back onto a road and wouldn’t jump.”

PC Tanya Hodgkiss of Nottinghamshire Police said it is a “potentially fatal disaster” for all parties if a vehicle and horse have a collision.

“It’s important drivers are reminded that horses are allowed on the roads. The safer neighbourhood team at East Bassetlaw has received several reports of vehicles passing horses far too closely and at speed that are legitimately using the rural country roads to access bridleways.

Incidents should be reported to the police and the British Horse Society (BHS). The society uses the data to lobby the Government, support safety campaigns and identify hotspots and recurring trends.

In March this year the BHS launched the free Horse i app which enables equestrians to quickly and easily submit details of incidents that have negatively affected their safety. This includes any problems with a road or off-road user, slippery road surfaces, dogs, low-flying aircrafts, or drones. The app records details including location, date and time, injuries, vet treatment, and whether agencies such as the police or civil aviation authority are involved.

“An incident is classed as an unplanned event that has resulted in a human or horse feeling unsafe, for example road rage, or that has the potential to cause injury (a near-miss), or that has already caused injury,” said a BHS spokesman.

“An incident report can be submitted via the time-saving tool in less than three minutes, although there is also the facility for the user to add in any supporting detail if they wish.”

The app can be downloaded for free via the Apple app store, or Google Play.

Flare thrown at mounted police officer and horse struck by man before football match

A mounted police officer was injured by a thrown flare and a police horse physically struck in two incidents before a football match.

Avon & Somerset Police is investigating the incidents, which happened at around 12.40pm on 20 June in the Ashton Road area of Bristol before the national league play-off final between Hartlepool United and Torquay United.

In one incident a flare was thrown that struck a mounted police officer. The officer sustained minor facial injuries but did not need hospital treatment. In the other incident a police horse was struck by a male.

“Thankfully the horse sustained no injury,” said an Avon & Somerset police spokesman.

The police launched an appeal and today (25 June) an Avon & Somerset spokesman said two men had come forward.

“A 19-year-old and a 42-year-old man, both from Hartlepool, are assisting our ongoing enquiries with respect to separate investigations into an assault on an emergency worker and a public order incident,” said the spokesman.

“We’re grateful to everyone who has shared our appeal and provided us with information.”

Force football officer PC Mark Neal said both males were among groups of Hartlepool supporters at the time and the force worked with the football club and Cleveland Police during the enquiries.

“Four fans were also ejected from the stadium during the match and enquiries into those incidents are continuing,” he said.

PC Neal added while it was disappointing to see supporters ignore instructions not to go on to the pitch at the end of the game, the force is grateful to the majority of fans who were “well behaved” and engaged with police before and after the match.

A horse and rider narrowly escaped serious injury in a hit and run incident when a speeding car lost control and its wing mirror struck the mare.

Samantha Barker and her friend Katherine Mellow were near their yard at Dawgates Lane, Nottinghamshire, on 27 May when they heard the car approaching.

Samantha, who was riding her eight-year-old New Forest mare Millie, told H&H the black Volkswagen Golf appeared “way too fast”, braked, but lost control and skidded towards them.

“The car narrowly missed Katherine, who was in front on her horse Vean, but I couldn’t go anywhere. The wing mirror hit Millie and broke off, she bolted and I fell off,” she said.

“Millie took off back to the yard and Katherine followed her. Anything could have happened, Millie could have been hit by another car.”

Samantha said the driver of the vehicle briefly stopped and claimed he was “only doing 50-55mph” before leaving the scene.

“Two witnesses stopped and one gave me a lift back to the yard. All I could think about was Millie, I was shaking,” she said.

Millie had friction marks on her side, but was otherwise uninjured in the incident. Samantha attended hospital and suffered bad bruising to her arm.

“What happened was terrifying, I‘ve had nightmares about it since,” said Samantha.

“It’s so lucky the car missed Katherine, she told me she didn’t know what she was going to find when she looked round.”

Samantha reported the incident to the police.

“Someone must know the driver,” she said. “It’s so frustrating, I’ve only just got my confidence back after breaking my pelvis in a fall two years ago. It feels like this will have set us right back.

“Drivers need to understand we’re only pursuing our hobby. We’ve had all sorts from drivers giving us abuse – it’s disgusting. I want the council to put some horse warning signs up as there’s nothing on that road even though the yard is there. The road is a 60mph road, but that’s not a target. To some drivers it’s only a horse but to us they’re family.”

A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Police told H&H road users are being reminded to be vigilant on rural roads following reports of the hit and run.

“After the incident the driver is reported to have sped off. It’s thought the car was left without a wing mirror and had visible front-end damage,” said the spokesman.

Chief inspector Heather Sutton, rural crime lead for Nottinghamshire Police, added: “Driving off from the scene of an accident and not checking on the welfare of the rider is immoral and an offence, we will always conduct thorough enquiries wherever this has been reported to us.

“We understand how frightening this must have been for the rider, who was left extremely shaken. It was very fortunate that the horse and rider weren’t seriously injured during the incident.”

Chief inspector Sutton added that rural policing is something Nottinghamshire Police focuses heavily on, and the force has invested in projects such as new community hubs in areas to allow the police to serve those communities as effectively as possible.

Police are investigating a road rage incident in Dorset where a driver sped towards two horses, then slowed down to shout abuse.

The incident happened in Christchurch at around 11.15am on Friday, 7 May, when a woman in her 40s and another rider were heading towards a bridleway off Hawthorn Road.

They were approached at speed by a female driver in a white Ford who then slowed as she got near the horses and stuck her arm out to “gesticulate” at the riders. She also yelled abuse before she sped away.

The driver is described as white, aged between 40 and 50, and “stout” with dark, curly hair.

There was also a passenger in the front seat of the vehicle at the time.

Police community support investigator Kate Hann, of Christchurch police, said: “Our enquiries are continuing to try and locate the driver of the Ford and I am appealing to anyone who witnessed what happened to please get in touch.

“I understand there were three people a short distance away at the time of the incident who were standing near a motorbike at the side of the road. I would urge these people to come forward as they may have information to assist my investigation.

‘A sweetheart and a gentleman’: new police horse named after Prince Philip

A new police horse named in honour of the late Duke of Edinburgh and described as a “golden boy” already has officers staking their claim as he embarks on his training.

Last month 12-year-old Dutch warmblood Charlie successfully passed his trial period with Northumbria Police. The gelding has since received his official police horse name, Prince, after Prince Philip.

Prince’s trainer PC Bev Crain told H&H the force had “scoured the country” looking for a suitable horse.

“We were looking for a horse that had a bit of life experience and was already used to traffic. We went to see Prince in Alnwick after seeing him advertised and he was just a golden boy,” she said.

“He had done hacking, hunting and eventing with his owner and he was just really quiet and sensible. He came in on trial and during that time we took him out on local patrols and he wasn’t fazed by anything.”

Prince will undergo training, which PC Crain suspects could only take six months.

“If we get a five- or six-year-old it takes a bit longer because they maybe haven’t seen as much but with Prince being 12 he’s that little bit older and seen more. We’ve started introducing him to Newcastle city centre, which is our biggest city in Northumbria. In the future we will do public order training with him where he’ll join the rest of the section and learn all the tactics,” she said.

“It’s my responsibility to get him out and about seeing as much as we can and once I think he’s at a level he can be ridden by anyone on the section, he’ll be handed over to a new rider for them to take on his continued training.”

Bev said Prince is a “very friendly” horse, who is doing well in his new career.

“He’s so chilled and he loves his food; he always whinnies for his breakfast in the morning. He’s a real sweetheart and a gentleman,” she said.

“Everybody has their favourites and there’s quite a few officers bidding for Prince to be their allocated police horse.”

The force is looking to recruit one or two more horses.

“We’re always searching online, or ads on Horse & Hound to try to find new horses, as are many of the mounted sections at the moment. The problem we find is because we take them on trial for four weeks it puts a lot of people off because people can more or less sell their horse straight away in the current market,” said PC Crain.

“It takes a special horse to do our job so it’s very difficult trying to find them – they’re like hen’s teeth. They’ve to have the right temperament and personality. We’ve had horses in and you ask a question and it’s too much for them, so it’s finding something that is calm but brave and forward-going because we’re asking them to go into situations where others might turn and run. It’s a massive trust thing between the horse and rider.”

Rider ‘shaken’ and horse injured in road collision with bus

A rider was “very shaken” and a horse is receiving treatment for injuries following a collision with a bus, which reportedly failed to stop after the accident.

The rider in her 20s and her horse were involved in the collision with a white Volvo single-decker bus at around 3pm on Saturday, 8 May at Dorchester Road, near the junction with Lorton Lane, in Weymouth.

“Officers are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward following a fail-to-stop road traffic collision,” said a spokesman for Dorset Police.

“It is reported that the bus did not stop at the scene, but following enquiries it has been identified.”

The spokesman said the rider sustained bruising in the incident. The horse is receiving veterinary treatment for injuries.

Police constable Ann-Marie Lee of Weymouth Police said the incident has understandably left the rider feeling “very shaken”.

“I am carrying out enquiries to establish the full circumstances of what happened,” she said.

Former show Clydesdale to enjoy second career as police horse

A Clydesdale horse who competed in the show ring and “always wants to please” has turned her hoof to a new career with the police.

West Yorkshire Police welcomed six-year-old Millie this year and the mare has now successfully passed her trial period.

A spokesman for the force said 17.2hh Millie was born in Devon, and moved to North Yorkshire as a three-year-old where she was involved in showing, picking up a number of rosettes.

“Her trainer thought she would make an ideal police horse and contacted West Yorkshire Police,” said the spokesman.

Millie will now take her police horse name Millgarth, after the former Leeds police station.

Millie replaces 22-year-old Breeze, who retired in September last year following 11 years with the force. A spokesman said at the time of his retirement the gelding would have “very difficult shoes to fill”.

Millie’s rider, PC Steven Durrans, said the mare is “exactly” what the force needs and she “fits in perfectly”.

“She’s so friendly and always wants to please. She’s got a great temperament; she’s very polite which is important for such a big horse,” he said.

“She passed her trial period with flying colours. In that four weeks she had to learn a little bit about the job; it started off with her doing some semi-rural patrols and progressed from there with nuisances, like flags and drums, and noise and rattles in the school to see how she reacted. She takes everything in her stride.”

Charity horsebox stolen en route to collect donkey: ‘we are incredibly sad’

Crooks have stolen a welfare charity’s horsebox that was on its way to collect a donkey from a sanctuary.

Greater Manchester Police and the Donkey Sanctuary are appealing for information after the charity’s van was taken from outside a hotel overnight between yesterday (19 April) and today.

The empty vehicle was parked outside the Premier Inn hotel in Denton, Manchester, during an overnight stop to collect a donkey from the charity’s Manchester sanctuary in Abbey Hey. The donkey, who was due to be collected today, was to be taken to the Donkey Sanctuary’s headquarters in Devon.

“We’re incredibly sad that someone has chosen to target the Donkey Sanctuary like this – we are a charity that relies entirely on donations, so we can be there for donkeys in greatest need,” said the charity’s head of welfare, Hannah Bryer.

The van is a white, Peugeot Equitrek Boxer, branded with the Donkey Sanctuary logo and has the registration YJ69 EFY

The Donkey Sanctuary is an international equine welfare sanctuary and runs 10 sanctuaries in the UK and Europe, providing lifelong care to more than 7,000 donkeys and mules.

Man dies in road traffic collision between car and horse-drawn carriage

A man has died while another is receiving treatment for serious injuries, as a result of a road traffic collision between a car and a horse-drawn carriage at the weekend.

Police are appealing for information following the collision, which took place on the A177 between Thorpe Thewles and Tesco, Stockton-on-Tees, at around 10am yesterday morning (4 April), involving a white Hyundai vehicle.

“One of the males, in his 50s, on the horse and cart sadly died following the collision. Our thoughts remain with his family at this extremely difficult time,” said a spokesman for Cleveland Police.

“The other male, aged 49, on the horse and cart is in hospital receiving treatment for serious injuries.”

The police spokesman added that both horses survived the collision.

“The male driver of the Hyundai, aged in his 70s, also remains in hospital receiving treatment,” he said.

Officers are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with dash cam footage showing the incident to contact sergeant Scott Pearson on 101 quoting 052600.

‘A legend’: unflappable police horse to enjoy retirement after 12 years’ service

An unflappable police horse who was “one of the family” – and met David Beckham at the Olympics – will enjoy a quieter life in retirement.

South Yorkshire Police (SYP) said farewell to 20-year-old Burnsgreave, known as Bernie, on 25 March following 12 years of service. The 18hh Shire/thoroughbred cross joined the force on 3 December 2009 and was mainly partnered with Sergeant Dave Driver, who has also recently retired from the mounted section.

Sgt Driver said he knew he and the force had a great horse after his and Bernie’s first deployment together in Warwickshire.

“Bernie hit the ground running when he joined SYP; our first big event was an English Defence League protest,” he said.

“A lit firework was thrown underneath Bernie and exploded with a loud bang and sparks flew everywhere. Bernie did not move a hoof, he stood his ground like a pro and from that day forward I had the utmost trust in him, which we built a strong relationship on.”

Bernie and Sgt Driver travelled all over the country on mutual aid deployments in addition to their policing duties in South Yorkshire.

“The highlights of both our careers include working for three weeks in London for the Olympics, patrolling the Olympic Park each day with up to 500,000 people there each time. We even got to meet David Beckham,” he said.

“Bernie was also a favourite at our local football matches and developed a bit of a reputation with supporters as a legend.”

In December 2020, following a lameness investigation, Bernie was diagnosed with a serious tear to a ligament, and X-rays found arthritic changes. It was recommended that although he would still be able to enjoy ridden work in future, he should be taken out of police work.

“Bernie has been a fantastic horse and I am pleased I got to be partnered with him for the majority of my mounted career. He was faithful and hard-working and deserves a happy retirement where he will be loved and spoilt,” said Sgt Driver.

Bernie has retired to a private home in West Yorkshire, but will be under the care of the Horse Trust for the rest of his life.

‘How would you feel if someone fed your pet?’: Police warn against feeding others’ horses

A police force has issued a strong message urging people not to feed horses without owners’ permission, warning that their actions could kill.

Nottingham Police’s East Bassetlaw rural beat manager and wildlife officer Gareth Mitchell said he wanted to increase awareness about the risks of feeding other people’s equines.

“Throughout the last 12 months many of us have been enjoying the outdoors and when people encounter equines in fields they are tempted to feed them treats. These treats range from sweets, vegetables, fruit and even grass cuttings but I need to stress how dangerous this can be to them,” he said.

“I believe many people act with no malicious intent and are simply unaware of the risks certain foods or grass cuttings can pose to the animals but I am urging people to stop feeding any equine that does not belong to them as this can cause serious illness and be potentially life-threatening.”

PC Mitchell explained to those who do not know that horses are unable to vomit.

“This means that any food ingested has to pass through the animal and the risk of choking is high,” he said.

“The owners of these animals keep them on a diet suitable for their health and well-being, and sudden over-feeding can lead to colic, bowel obstructions and even death as well as other health complications,”

“If you do not own the animal, or have permission of the owner, then do not feed it. Most of these animals are kept as pets and used for pleasure, rather than work, and I am sure most of us have a pet at home so I request that people think about this; how would you feel if someone fed your pet something which could potentially lead to the animal being put to sleep?”

A striking police horse who always drew a crowd will enjoy a “fairytale” retirement with one of his former riders and a former equine colleague.

This week Northumberland Police waved goodbye to 17-year-old part-bred Friesian Percy, who had served with the force for seven years.

Police officer Jo Watson, who trained Percy and went on to ride him for four years, told H&H the 17.2hh gelding was a “gentle giant” on the ground but had not been the easiest to train.

“He got there eventually,” she said. “He was very proud; he would jog and prance about. If you told him off he got worse; you had to sit quietly and ignore him – if you got hold of him and put your legs on he only got bigger!

“He was a very bold horse but he also had a bit of an edge. It wasn’t just plodding round the streets with him, he gave you a bit more of a ride and I loved that about him. He used to do mini launches where he would jump like a Lipizzaner. “

During his career Percy led parades, attended Manchester and Sheffield football derbies, and was used for mutual aid where he would help other forces.

“He went to Brighton to a Hells Angels’ rally. He just did everything, he was a fantastic police horse,” said PC Watson.

“Percy always drew a crowd because he was so attractive. When he walked past people would say ‘wow’. He was jet black, shiny, held his head high and pranced everywhere. Even when he was walking he had this presence, he was just gorgeous.”

Percy was retired from the force owing to some back issues but he will now enjoy light hacking with his other former rider, retired police officer Michelle Alexander.

“I think if Percy had been going further away I’d have been a bit heartbroken but I know I’ll still get to visit him. I spoke to Michelle and he’s already settled in and is happy as larry,” said PC Watson.

“Michelle also rode police horse Peroni for six years and when she retired in January, Peroni retired with her so Percy is in the field with his old colleague. It’s really lovely, it’s like an ideal fairytale and a happy ever after.”

Police appeal: man beats horse and dog in ‘shocking and barbaric’ assault

Police are trying to identify a man who beat a horse multiple times with a whip then beat a dog in a “shocking and barbaric” assault.

Surrey Police has released CCTV images from the incident, which took place in Shepperton on 9 February, as they search for the man in connection with the animal cruelty investigation.

A spokesman for the force said officers were informed of the CCTV footage, which showed a man driving a single horse and trap “aggressively” along Laleham Road.

“Having stopped the trap and unhitched the horse, he proceeded to beat it multiple times with a riding crop. He then beat a lurcher dog in the trailer multiple times before the dog ran off,” said the spokesman.

“The horse and dog were later seized under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, and are currently receiving medical treatment for their injuries.”

The spokesman said the footage is “too upsetting” to be shown in its entirety so it has been cropped and images have been released in the hope someone recognises the man and can help the police identify him.

“He is described as a white man with a stocky build and dark hair, wearing a black jacket and dark trousers,” he said, adding that the trap is wooden with white shafts, the horse is skewbald with a white harness, and the dog is black with white patches.

PS Lee Donovan of the neighbourhood patrol team said the incident was a “shocking and barbaric assault on two helpless animals”.

“We are extremely keen to hear from anyone who witnessed this male prior to the attack on the animals riding around on local roads including any dashcam footage,“ he said.

“Surrey Police take animal cruelty extremely seriously and will be pursuing this offender.”

‘Help us bring them home’: five basset hounds stolen from kennels

The public has been urged to spread the word, to help recover five basset hounds stolen overnight from a Leicestershire kennels.

The working bassets, belonging to the Westerby Basset Hounds, were taken when their kennels were broken into on Wednesday night (17 February).

Kennel huntsman Sophie Cripps said the theft is “truly devastating for everyone involved” and appealed to the public for help in the search for their safe return.

“We urge as many people as possible to raise awareness and help us to bring these hounds back home to our kennels with the rest of the pack,” she said.

All the hounds are microchipped and staff are asking the public to alert vets to keep an eye out for them, should they be handed in.

Polly Portwin, of the Countryside Alliance, said it is incredibly sad news.

“These are working basset hounds that are part of a pack and the perpetrators of this evil crime must be brought to justice and the hounds returned home swiftly,” she said.

“This latest theft is sadly one of a number of recent thefts of dogs and working breeds that we are witnessing across the country. We urge all dog owners to be incredibly vigilant in our ongoing fight against these criminals.”

The Westerby Bassets’ country extends from Melton Mowbray to Daventry, and from Nuneaton to Uppingham. They descend from the Walhampton Basset Hounds, founded in 1889 by Christopher and Godfrey Heseltine at Lymington in the New Forest.

A teenage rider is in hospital with serious head injuries after a fall from her horse when a car passed her too quickly.

South Yorkshire Police is appealing for witnesses and information on the incident that occurred on 9 February on Joan Croft Lane, Doncaster around 5pm.

“It is reported a 13 year-old girl was riding her horse along Joan Croft Lane when a car is believed to have driven past the horse too fast, causing it to bolt,” said a spokesman for the force.

“The girl fell from her horse and was taken to Sheffield Children’s Hospital with serious head injuries.”

The spokesman said the car is reported to be a white Seat Leon with dark tinted windows and dark wheels.

“Officers are keen to speak to the driver of the car and anyone who may have witnessed the incident or live in the area and have CCTV footage,” he said.

New ‘Roman god’ joins mounted police force

A new equine recruit has become “one of the team” as he settles into life at Thames Valley Police.

Seven weeks ago the force welcomed 17.2hh Irish sport horse Neptune. Following his successful trial period under the eye of PC Laura Webb, Neptune will now begin his official police horse training.

Sergeant Leon Astley told H&H the “lovely” six-year-old gelding had fitted in well.

“Neptune is a happy horse and has become one of the team very quickly,” he said.

“We have a tradition of naming all our horses after Roman or Greek gods and Neptune seemed fitting for him.”

Sgt. Astley said over the next couple of years Neptune will be trained in various different scenarios.

“We’ll introduce him to bigger crowds and town centres, then we’ll do nuisance and public order training,” he said.

“It’s really difficult at the moment because ordinarily the new horses would get taken to football matches, music festivals and city centre night-time patrols but because none of that is going on at the moment, there is a bit of a delay in the ability to train the horses which makes it really difficult. We’re still going out patrolling and we have two of our horses currently doing public order training with the riot police.”

Neptune joins the force’s seven other horses; Odin, Aurora, Loki, Luna, Atlas, Viktor and Harper.

“We have some good characters,” said Sgt. Astley. “Loki is the Greek god of mischief and true to his name, Loki is quite mischievous – he’s cheeky to handle on the ground. Atlas is an 18.1hh part-bred Shire. He’s a softie and loves a fuss and a cuddle.

“Luna is our heaviest horse, she’s a Normandy cob and weighs about 930kg. She’s a ‘marey’ mare, she has a real attitude on the ground but to ride she’s lovely, she’s like a big armchair.”

In 2018 Thames Valley Police’s mounted section had been at risk of closure due to budget cuts, but the decision was turned around.

“At the time we weren’t replacing any horses but since it was decided to keep the unit we’ve been building the section back up again and have a good team of horses,” said Sgt. Astley.

“We checked the rest of the ponies and they seemed ok, but we found large sections of the field’s outer fencing had been pulled down. We have outer and inner fencing, and we think they’d have tried to take the ponies if it hadn’t been for the inner fence,” said Laura.

“Later that day, at 5.30pm, we could see another a group of boys and girls in the field again, and we chased them down but some got away on quads, and some ran on to the A174.”

Laura shared what has been happening on Facebook in the hope word would spread to help keep the horses and ponies safe.

“At first I didn’t want to put anything about it online, but I felt if more people are aware then there will be more eyes on the horses and ponies. It’s a large 20-acre field and takes an hour to walk the perimeter, and they all live out together.

“The trouble is because the field is on a hill, the group could always see us coming from the bottom and could get away. We hope if people are out walking on the Eston hills and see something happening then they can immediately let us know or phone the police.

“We’ve had lots of support, and people in the local community have been disgusted about what’s happened,” said Laura.

“It’s just heartbreaking, we are a riding school and our horses and ponies are family. They come to us and are never sold, so we have lots of retired or older ones. They should be safe in their own field. We bought the business in 2016, and have never known anything like this.”

A Cleveland Police spokesman said officers attended Eston Equitation and provided forensic, crime prevention, and safeguarding advice and the force’s equine officer will highlight the incidents at this month’s regional equine meeting.

“This is where police forces and partner agencies share information and best practice, as well as discussing problem solving approaches to equine-related crime and anti-social behaviour,” said the spokesman.

“In the meantime, we would appeal to parents and carers to check what their children are doing while out of the house and to stress to them that police will identify and deal with anyone causing harm or suffering to animals.

“We would also appeal for anyone with information to contact Cleveland Police on the 101 number quoting ref 076245.”

A poster with Maisey’s picture was shared thousands of times on social media but she was not found, until last week when Avon & Somerset Police received a call from a member of the public about a group of horses near the M5 in Avonmouth, Bristol.

The RSPCA attended the scene, and asked HorseWorld for assistance with “one particular pony in very poor condition”.

“We were asked if we could collect a severely underweight Shetland pony who had been abandoned,” said HorseWorld head of welfare Sarah Hollister.

“We were already at capacity, with other rescues having been taken in just a few days before, but we knew we had to help.”

A HorseWorld spokesman added that Maisey was in a “shocking state”.

“Her winter coat was very fluffy but with further inspection, it was clear the mare was severely malnourished and emaciated, covered in lice and could be pregnant,” he said.

When RSPCA inspector Dan Hatfield processed the data from Maisey’s microchip, it was discovered that she had been reported as stolen.

“Maisey has quite distinctive markings and as I was looking over photographs of the rescue, they triggered a memory of something I had seen on social media,” said HorseWorld chief executive Petra Ingram.

Maisey was reunited with Allison on Wednesday (6 March).

“It feels unreal to have Maisey home. When Dan phoned I just burst out crying; I didn’t say anything. I’ve had people in the village crying when I’ve told them,” she said.

“Holly, her fieldmate, will be over the moon. But without the microchip, and the amazing work of everyone involved, we would have never got her back.”

Mr Hatfield said it is “absolutely wonderful to be part of bringing Maisey back home so many months after she was stolen”.

“When we rescued her in such a sorry state last week, we had no idea that she would turn out to be a much-loved, missing pet,” he said.

“This is a fantastic example of how vital it is that we microchip our pets – without this, Maisey may never have found her way back home to her owners, and I am so happy to witness them being reunited today. It was a special moment for us all.”

PC Jess Swanborough of Chippenham Neighbourhood Policing Team was there when Maisey was returned to Allison.

“It was so lovely to see Maisey come home and her owner was absolutely delighted to have her back safely,” she said.

British Horse Society (BHS) road statistics

The society’s annual statistics showed that three people and six horses died on the road in 2023, and 94 people and 86 horses were injured. Of the 3,383 incidents reported to the BHS 85% occurred because a vehicle passed too closely or too fast.

A BHS spokesman said the figures are a “stark reminder” that road incidents involving equestrians are continuing to happen around the UK – despite the Highway Code changes in 2022. In the Highway Code drivers are advised to pass horses at no more than 10mph, and at two metres’ distance.

“Ely was diagnosed with his brain tumour last year and has been making memories with his family. Knowing the joy that meeting our four-legged colleagues can bring to children’s faces, we invited Ely and his family to Ring Farm,” said a South Yorkshire police spokesman.

During the visit Ely and Guy sat in the mounted unit’s horsebox and a traffic patrol car, and met some of the force’s “different modes of transport”, police horses Foggy, Stan, Woody and Sully.

“The giant boys were extremely gentle with Ely and Guy, and mounted officer PC Phil Reed explained what the horses enjoyed and how they helped police officers with their work,” said the spokesman.

“Ely was given a warrant card to show our commitment to him being part of the South Yorkshire Police family, and officers presented him with a police teddy bear.”

Mrs Fearnley said her family had an “absolutely lovely morning”.

“It really was great. Ely has really enjoyed it, particularly the car. He loved it when they put the sirens on and the blue lights as he loves anything sensory-related,” she said

Sheffield sergeant Tracy Spratt, who organised the visit, said the unit feels “extremely privileged to have met Ely and welcomed him and his family to Ring Farm”.

“Seeing the joy brought to Ely’s face was heartwarming. He is such a sweet boy, whose smile and courageous charisma could light up the world. We hope he’s able to make more fond memories with his family,” she said.

Allison, who has owned 16-year-old Maisey for 13 years, told H&H that she believes someone may have taken her over a stone wall.

“There are scrabble marks and someone’s trainer footprints where they have skidded at the edge of the field by the wall,” she said.

“At the end of the lane we found tyre tracks. She’s only 31 inches tall and we think someone has put her in a van.”

Allison said Maisey has a history of laminitis and needs to be carefully managed.

“She’s on minimal grass, and this year she has been doing amazing. She’s probably not worth a lot of money, and she can’t be ridden, but whoever has taken her doesn’t know that,” she said.

“She’s part of our family. When we have animals we keep them for their lifetime, and I won’t give up until we find her. She wasn’t really in view, and it’s horrible thinking that someone has been checking us out.”

“We just hope to get some good news, and that someone might leave her somewhere and we can collect her,” said Allison.

“We’ve done everything we can to make her too hot to handle.”

Wiltshire Police are appealing for witnesses. A police spokesman said if anyone recognises Maisey and can help locate her, to contact 101, quoting reference 54230073017.

Man jailed for driving into woman with children on ponies

On 15 January 2022 at around 3pm Brown was driving along Leyburn Road in his new Ford Ranger pick-up truck. The victim, a woman in her 50s, was walking at the rear of a group of children on ponies and tried to get Brown to slow down.

A North Yorkshire Police statement stated that a witness said Brown was approaching at speed with lots of engine noise.

“The victim feared he would spook the ponies and put the three children in danger of being thrown off. The woman attempted to slow Brown by waving her arms towards him,” it read.

Brown continued to his home without stopping at the scene.

“When the victim attended hospital, it was confirmed she had broken a vertebra in her back. The matter was reported to the police and a collision investigation was undertaken,” read the statement.

Although Brown initially pleaded not guilty, claiming the victim had “thrown herself” at his vehicle, he changed his plea to guilty before a trial was due to get under way.

He was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison, and disqualified from driving for 10 years, which begins on his release from prison.
