Equestrian brands Thermatex and Griffin NuuMed have stopped manufacturing, it is understood.

A UK stockist, Pioneer Endurance, shared the news on social media on Wednesday (12 November). H&H has attempted to contact both Thermatex and Griffin NuuMed via email and telephone, and parent company Baaj Capital. The brands’ websites are no longer live and it is understood that their factory, in Cardigan, Wales, closed on 7 November.

The news follows a rocky two years for the brands, which were originally manufactured by Vale Brothers. Thermatex is well known for its long-lasting cooler rugs, and Griffin NuuMed’s products included numnahs and saddle pads.

In September 2023 Vale Brothers announced it had gone into administration – putting 80 jobs at risk across Thermatex, Griffin NuuMed, Harry Dabbs and Jeffries Saddlery. At the time, managing director Mr Wilkes told H&H that this was owing to the effect Covid had had on the business, but also the Russia-Ukraine war; he said material costs had increased between 10 and 150% in 18 months, and on average 35%.

In March 2024 Vale Brothers was given a lifeline when it was bought by Jeffries Lifestyle Ltd – a holding company set up by Baaj Capital – and it was announced that the brands were secure and would continue to operate.

This summer, saddlery manufacturer Bliss of London acquired Jeffries Saddlery, Harry Dabbs and Vale Brothers – in a deal hoped to “give these brands the future they deserve” – but Thermatex and Griffin NuuMed were not part of this deal and continued to be owned by Jeffries Lifestyle Ltd.

Yesterday (13 November) H&H reported that manufacturer Charles Owen will stop UK production from 19 December, as a result of the lease on their Wrexham premises expiring. A Charles Owen spokesperson told H&H the decision had been “incredibly difficult” – but added that although UK production will cease, “we still have every intention to continue to sell our products to the UK and beyond”.

Showing is all about displaying your horse at his best – so the best numnahs for showing are discreet with a neat fit. Showing requires a smart appearance and, therefore when thinking about what to wear showing, less fussy designs are usually preferred – you want the judge to be looking at your horse, rather than distracted by a bulky, mismatched or ill-fitting pad. This is why numnahs are shaped to match the saddle and cover a much smaller area than GP saddle pads or dressage squares.

H&H’s showing editor Bethan Simons says that the most important thing when buying a numnah for showing is that it fits correctly.

“You want a neat, precise fit around the saddle – too small is uncomfortable and could cause pressure points on your horse’s back, while too large or bulky distracts from your horse,” she explains. Jump down for more of Bethan’s advice and tips on how to choose a numnah for showing.

How to choose the best numnah for showing

“When choosing a numnah, always opt for one that gives you a close fit rather than choosing a showing-specific numnah if it’s not the right shape and will look wrong under the saddle,” Bethan advises.

Showing saddles usually have a straighter cut than a GP saddle, which allows you to show off the shoulder, so when selecting a numnah you should consider the shape of your saddle. If you have a working hunter saddle, then select a numnah to fit.

“Once you’ve got your numnah home, make sure to practice in it prior to your competition. It could well feel quite different for your horse so make sure they are happy with it, especially with half pads and those with anti slip features,” says Bethan. “It’s also worth experimenting with the different materials if your horse is a little sensitive or ticklish.”

The best half pads for horses can be used for a variety of reasons. Some are added beneath correctly fitting saddles to add an extra layer of shock absorption and aid stability, while others can be added to account for changes in the horse’s shape and help to temporarily improve saddle fit. The best saddle pads will draw away moisture from your horse’s back, keeping him dry and comfortable even when he’s working hard in hot weather. It will also fit your saddle well, offer a good amount of cushioning and spine clearance, and it shouldn’t move while you’re riding.

The straps for attachment should be of good length – and if they’re Velcro for easy fitting this is a real bonus. Some will attach to the girth straps, while others will attach at the D-rings, which may be more convenient unless you need those D-rings to attach a breastplate to. The best saddle pads will wash and wear well as you’ll need to put it through the wash frequently to keep it clean, smart and free from sweat and hair. Some feature an extra layer of protection where the girth sits to prevent the pad suffering wear in this area.

Why do you need a saddle pad?

A saddle pad provides a little extra cushioning between you and your horse, but it’s main function is to keep your saddle clean and wick sweat away from your horse’s back. Some saddle pads are anti-slip and provide extra security, while sometimes a saddle fitter will advise you use a particular shape or thickness of pad, such as a half pad, to temporarily improve the fit of your saddle.

What’s the difference between a saddle pad and a numnah?

A numnah is roughly the same shape as your saddle, whereas a saddle pad or saddlecloth is closer to a rectangular shape and you can see much more of it when the saddle is placed on top. Numnahs are commonly used in showing.

What size saddle pad do I need?

Saddle pads come in a range of sizes, dependent on the manufacturer, but the most common divisions in the UK are pony or full. Some brands also have the option of cob, but not all. When you only have the two sizes to choose between, if your saddle is 16½in or larger you’re likely to be better with a full-sized pad, while anything smaller is will probably be better with a pony size. However, wherever possible it’s best to check the manufacturer’s size guide before purchase.

The best jump saddle pads sit nicely under your jump saddle, offer some level of protection and wick away moisture to keep your horse’s back sweat-free. Alongside a wide range of technical features, many brands have a great selection of colours and personalisation options, so it’s possible to create the perfect colour combo for competition day or a matchy-matchy Instagram-worthy shot.

Unfortunately you can’t just use your favourite GP saddle pad with a jump saddle, as the shape is very different and it won’t be very comfortable for your horse. When choosing your new jump pad, it’s important to choose a saddle pad with a cut that compliments your saddle. If you have a modern European style jump saddle, look out for saddle pads that say they’re specially designed to fit. The thickness of the pad is also an important consideration because unless your saddle fitter has suggested that you seek out a particularly thick one, it’s best to opt for one that offers shock absorption without altering the fit of your saddle.

Other things to look out for are grippy and wicking material. Anti-slip additions can be on the underside of the saddle pad next to your horse, or on the top side between the pad and your saddle, while wicking materials will help draw away sweat to keep your horse dry and comfortable. The fastenings are easy to overlook, but some saddle pads come with adjustable, elasticated or Velcro fastenings, which can make life much easier and help you make your saddle pad a great fit.

How often do you clean your horse’s saddle pads? Every time you use a saddle pad, numnah or half-pad, it will absorb a certain amount of sweat, grime and scurf. This builds up until there are dirt or grease patches, which will harden and can cause sores or rubs on the horse’s back. While the outside of the saddle pad may superficially still look clean – especially if it’s a dark-coloured one – the underside could well be a different story.

As well as keeping your horse comfortable, regular and appropriate cleaning of the saddle pad will extend its life. The salt in the horse’s sweat can break down the fibres in the pad, meaning it will wear more quickly.

Of course, there are no set rules on how often you need to clean it: some horses sweat more, some riders groom less, and it depends on the season and the amount and intensity of the work done.

How you clean your saddle pad yields another set of choices. An everyday dark-coloured cotton pad will have different instructions to a white sheepskin, so let’s aim to cover all the popular options. Most saddle pads will have washing instructions, so you will know if they can be washed in your machine, for example, or need hand-washing.

How to clean your everyday saddle pad

Many riders opt for dark saddle pads for daily use, as they show up the dirt less than lighter colours. Before you start any washing process, brush off or vacuum the hair and as much dirt as possible from the underside of the pad. Next, a washing machine works well up to a point if this is recommended by the manufacturer, but it’s best to avoid using your regular detergent as it contains a bleaching agent which will compromise the fibre and stitching. However, milder detergents may not to shift the grease and grime. Instead – or if the pad is not machine-washable – a good hand-scrub will work wonders to shift stains and stubborn grease spots. Some riders swear by hand-scrubbing with human shampoo, which gets rid of grease without compromising the fabric, with the additional benefit that it won’t fade the dark colours.

Tumble dryers are not recommended. Hang the saddle pad up and allow them to air-dry, without pegs, which can cause awkward kinks in the shape of the pad.

Keeping a saddle pad white

While in most cases you shouldn’t get any extra marks for turnout at a competition, but it certainly helps you look and feel the part to be well presented. Many riders save their white saddle pads for competition days, after which they should be kept separate from all the other, possibly muddy, items bound for the washing machine. And remember not to polish the inside of your riding boots, as black polish is extremely difficult to remove from a white fabric.

As with the dark coloured pads, try to remove as much dirt, grime and hair with a brush or vacuum, and hand-scrubbing with shampoo before using the machine – providing the manufacturer’s instructions recommend this. Remember to check for any rogue red socks in the machine’s drum that might turn your numnah pink, and then wash at the suggested temperature.

Like our own white clothing, you’ll want the saddle pad to be bright white to dazzle the judges. Bleach is a no-no, as it will weaken the fibres and may cause irritation to the horse’s skin. Some people use a traditional whitening trick of soaking their whites in a weak solution of borax for an hour, then rinse thoroughly and leave to dry.

Sheepskin and wool saddle pads

These need a bit more care to keep the wool both clean and fluffy. Check the manufacturer’s instructions, and you will find that many sheepskin saddle pads can be put in the machine, usually on a cool cycle designed for woollens or delicates. Otherwise you’ll need to roll your sleeves and hand-wash in a big sink or a bathtub.

There are several detergents designed for washing sheepskin and wool, such as Mattes Melp or Woolskin detergent. A liquid non-bio product is key as powder can clog up the fibres of the wool. One hot tip is to rub in a generous amount of human hair conditioner before washing, as this can improve the softness if the wool is matted.

Once the pad is clean, brush it with a sheepskin brush, such as the Wool Company’s bamboo one or a dog grooming brush, to revitalise its fluffiness.

Lay the pad flat to dry indoors.

There’s a lot more to cleaning your saddle pads than first meets the eye, but these tips should ensure a smart, professional turnout and a comfortable horse.

First impressions

I really liked the shape and how well it sat on the horse. I thought the design and trim looked smart and it looked like it would be really hard wearing.

Overview of performance

I really put this numnah through the mill by using it multiple times a day in many different scenarios and it proved very hard wearing and never lost its shape. It looked very smart on my horses and although the fabric is thick, it wasn’t rigid. I also found that it never picked up any hair even just before the horse was due to be clipped. It also never slipped and was used with all types of jumping saddles.

Likes and dislikes

I really like how well made this numnah is and how well it went through the wash. I also found the Velcro straps at the girth very handy and, although I rarely used the top straps as it never moved, they are of a good length to not be restricting in any way.

Verdict

First impressions

This numnah is a bit more square in the shape at the back than the others on test, but shaped for jumping at the front.

Overview of performance

I like how it is built up at the withers and it doesn’t have loops for the girth straps to go through, instead they attach onto the D-ring, which is functional. However, the girth straps are fixed rather than Velcro, which makes it a bit trickier to get the numnah off quickly.

There is an extra panel where the girth is secured for added strength. It is hard wearing and isn’t showing any scuff marks, which is great considering I’ve used it daily. It stays in place well, although it did come up quite short in length for a full size. It picked up a little bit of hair but nothing major.

I prefer Velcro girth straps for ease of use, but it is a good shape, is hard wearing and washes well.

Verdict

It’s a good shape, made of a nice material and it washes well — I’d recommend it to a friend.

The SXC High Rise Silicone saddle pad features a breathable lining to draw away moisture and a high-rise cut to allow freedom around the withers. This numnah incorporates a silicone print to provide ultimate grip, which keeps the saddle in place and removes the need for extra bulky straps.

First impressions

It doesn’t look as smart as some others in the test, but that’s because it has anti-slip features. It hasn’t got any straps at the top, which I quite liked as I usually cut them off anyway.

Overview of performance

It’s quilted but doesn’t really hold its own shape. It does have a shape to the wither, but overall I found it a bit flimsy. It hasn’t worn or washed very well and some of the stitching is starting to go. There is quite a lot of natural padding, so I can see why it is used for cross-country, and it stayed in place well when in use. I like the fact that it has anti-slip between the saddle and numnah, rather than the numnah and horse.

Sam’s likes and dislikes

I’m not keen on the shape as I prefer squarer-shaped numnahs, but it does have anti-slip features and I like the cushioning effect.

Verdict

It’s a good price and a nice numnah overall. I can see what they are trying to achieve, but it’s not as hard wearing as I’d like.

The Felix Bühler Breeze Pro saddle pad has two decorative cords, a big synthetic leather badge with felt border and contrast-coloured guards on the girth loops. The underside is made of breathable and moisture absorbing air mesh.

First impressions

I’m not keen on the branding all over the numnah — I prefer them to be a little less branded. It is cut for jumping, but is a lot squarer at the front than some.

Overview of performance

It’s quite padded and the horses have got a little bit warm under it. Being slightly thicker can be a bonus if you want to use just one numnah without any extra pads, but if you do want to use a saddle pad underneath, it is probably that bit too thick and would make your horse too warm.

The girth straps are Velcro, which is a bonus for me but there isn’t as much Velcro on the strap so it’s not as flexible as some others on test that have longer Velcro straps. It’s also not as high cut at the wither as some of the other numnahs and it is slightly shaped at the front, but not as much as others.

It washed OK, but is not particularly hard wearing as there is some stitching that is coming undone on the binding. It has a non-scratch panel by the girth, which is a bonus.

Sam’s likes and dislikes

It comes up slightly shorter in length than others of the same size, and is a little too thick for my preference.

Verdict

It’s not as hard wearing as others at a similar price, but good if you don’t want to use any extra pads.

First impressions

It is definitely more of a dressage shape than a classic jumping cut, as it’s only slightly shaped at the front and a bit squarer behind, but I quite like that.

Overview of performance

It doesn’t have Velcro girth straps, which is disappointing, but the top straps are well positioned and would give ample flexibility. It’s not cut as high as I’d like around the wither, but it’s adequate and it sits well. It’s soft to touch with soft binding, and it’s not overly thick. It stayed in place and didn’t rub, and it has washed and worn well. The stitching is also of good quality.

It’s made of a softer material so is very flexible, but it is quite expensive.

Verdict

It is very expensive, but I did not find it superior in quality to other numnahs of lesser value.

While it was really hard wearing and washed very well, it was also soft on the horse. A really classic style white numnah, smart enough for all occasions or just using at home. Personally I would have liked the d-ring attachments to have been a little longer to have suited some of our dressage saddles better, but this was a small gripe.

Verdict

I would most definitely recommend this functional, smart and hard wearing saddle pad to others.

First impressions

I loved the look of this saddle pad – the silky surface and colour was so elegant. It looked a lot more expensive than its price suggests.

Overview of performance

Unfortunately the aesthetic look was this pad’s best feature. The fit wasn’t right for the 17” dressage saddle it was tested with. It was very short along the spine leaving the saddle’s rear panel very close to touching the edge of the pad, which risks causing a pressure point. Also only the rear girth strap was able to run through the girth fastening as it was positioned too far back. However, it would be fine for a smaller saddle or if used for a lunging exercise with a roller. It was a great shame as it was such a beautiful pad for such a reasonable price.

I loved the look and feel of this pad, but unfortunately the sizing was wrong for our saddles.

First impressions

A really eye-catching saddle pad because of its design and silicone underneath, but I was concerned there was no d-ring or strap fastenings.

Overview of performance

While I really wanted to like this saddle pad, I had to question its usability. All of my saddles are fitted specifically to a horse and as this numnah is really quite bulky with multiple layers of padding and gel, I felt there was a chance it may alter the saddle fit. It does, without question, keep a saddle very stable with the silicone underside, however it limits all movement and I feel there is a chance that won’t benefit all horses. I can see this coming into its own potentially for horses coming back into work that have lost some condition/topline or to stabilise a saddle temporarily but would probably not choose to use it long term.

Likes and dislikes

I like the fact the fact that it could help to stabilise a saddle temporarily if necessary, but don’t like that much bulk under my saddles.

Verdict

This would be a really good addition to the tack room for someone who has a horse that varies in weight dramatically over the year.

The Climatex Trapez Pad from Eskadron has been developed in collaboration with saddlers, osteopaths, physiotherapists and chiropractors. It is designed specifically to support development of the trapezoid muscle by stabilising the saddle and at the same time ensuring the necessary freedom of movement of this area. The pad can be placed on top of a saddlecloth or positioned directly on the horse’s back without any adverse effects.

First impressions

I liked the shape of this mini half pad and the fact that it is small and lightweight. I ride a lot of youngsters that are still growing and developing and I was excited to see how handy it would be.

Overview of performance

I found this pad very useful for when you just needed to make a little adjustment to how the saddle sits on the horse’s back. It was very quick and easy to put in place and liked how versatile it was in terms of where you could place it. The change it caused on the saddle fit was subtle, which I liked. It didn’t slip at all and washed really well. I found it the most useful pad in the group test for my yard. Because all my saddles are made-to-measure, I found some of the other pads were too thick and bulky in comparison to this one.

Likes and dislikes

I really like how well this half pad does its job without affecting the feeling between my seat and the horse’s movement. I also like how breathable and lightweight it is. It would be the most stylish look as you can barely see it, but it is excellent at doing its job.

Verdict

This mini half pad is extremely useful and can go under any saddle on all types of horses.

First impressions

This was more rigid compared to some of the others in the group test. It looked very well made and I liked the breathable-looking top surface.

Overview of performance

This pad was breathable and well ventilated, while being well cushioned and comfy. It almost acted like memory foam as it was really cushioning. I also found the placing of the straps very useful and I never felt that it would rub my horse.

Likes and dislikes

I like how ventilated, how spongy and smart it looked under a saddle. It sat particularly nicely under a dressage saddle.

Verdict

A good choice for someone whose saddle fits well and is looking to provide that extra bit of comfort to their horse’s back.

Official description

The Felix Bühler Sheepskin Sydney Saddle Pad is made of medical sheepskin with sheepskin trim. The sheepskin is shorn shorter along the spinal column to allow for optimal spinal freedom. The pad is held in place by saddle straps with Velcro fasteners. Back length measures 64cm. The quilted material is 70% polyester, 30% cotton, with the inner lining and underside made of 100% polyester. This pad should be cleaned in the washing machine on a 30°C wool wash programme only, using special detergent for sheepskin. Do not tumble dry.

First impressions

This half pad felt very soft and luxurious, plus held its shape well. It looked very similar to the Caldene one and therefore I was interested to see how it would fair in comparison.

Overview of performance

This pad was slightly larger and was a bit longer than the others. The pad was slimmer, but still maintained a good level of cushioning. I thought that the light sheepskin fluff looked really smart, particularly when competing. I found that I used it more for dressage as the cut at the front is quite straight.

Likes and dislikes

I like how reasonably priced this half pad is considering its quality and style. It is quite long and therefore was better suited to a larger seated saddle. If I was to be really critical, it may not is as breathable as some of the others in the group test.

Verdict

A good value half pad that I would recommend, particularly for dressage competitions.

A very simply designed pad that felt thick, squishy and uncomplicated.

Overview of performance

This pad has no straps, which makes is very easy to use and it fitted on any horse without moving. I felt that it distributed the weight of the rider evenly and worked really well for everyday use on the yard. It wasn’t as breathable as the others in the group test, but all my horses felt comfortable wearing it.

Likes and dislikes

I like how cushioning it is, but at the same time it kept me close to my horse. It is not as stylish or flash as some of the others in the group test, but is a great addition to my yard.

Verdict

A good value basic half pad that I’ve found very useful to have on my yard.

First impressions

This pad looked very modern and technical, so I was really looking to testing it, but it felt quite heavy in my hand compared to others in the group test.

Overview of performance

This pad was very cushioning, but I did feel quite far away from my horse’s back when using it. I was a fan of the jelly grip as it never moved without needing to be secured to the saddle. It combined the benefits of a gel pad with a riser effect and my horses felt very comfortable in it.

Likes and dislikes

I like how well made, tough and secure it is. As a general pad, it is quite thick and raises me off my horse’s back rather more than I would like, but I believe my horse is very comfortable when he is wearing it.

Verdict

This is a really neat piece of kit for a horse that has a particularly sensitive back or one that needs their back protected. However, it is expensive if you are just looking for a general half pad.

First impressions

A smart looking, well designed half pad with a good rise in front and it fitted under the saddle well.

Overview of performance

This pad gave good, all-round cushioning that raised the saddle off the wither. It was flexible, but also held its shape well. I did find that the Velcro fastenings were too low and long so therefore weren’t used. I didn’t find it as breathable as some of the others in the group test, but it did look very smart.

Likes and dislikes

I like how flexible it is and that it gives the horse’s back all-round cushioning. It isn’t as technical as some of the others, but it would be a simple, smart addition to your tack room.

Verdict

Although it is quite expensive, it is flexible, offers good levels of cushioning and I found it great for eventing in.

A “winged” saddle pad has been designed to prevent pressure on a horse’s back behind the saddle.

The HRP Equestrian wing saddle pads are designed to sit inside the gullet of the saddle and are cut to stop them touching the horse’s back behind the cantle.

The product was among the innovation award winners at the British Equestrian Trade Association’s (BETA) 2016 fair (24-26 January).

Helen Ross, of HRP Equestrian, commissioned Hartpury researchers to compare pressure behind the saddle between a conventional, square-cut saddle pad and the winged inventions.

“I had a sensitive horse with a problem — the saddle pad was rubbing behind his saddle and it was affecting his gait,” she said. “I needed to find a solution, but it did not exist.”

The study, A preliminary investigation to compare pressures behind the saddle between a conventional square cut saddle pad and a HRP pressure reducing winged saddle pad, was published in January and found that the pressure on the back was “statistically less” with a wing saddle pad.

During trot and canter, the winged saddle pad had an average reading of zero pressure behind the saddle in all test sessions. Six horses, competing at BE 100 and novice level, were used and three sets of data were collected in each gait.

A new range from Californian sheepskin saddle pad company Fleeceworks is now available in the UK, from online retailer Shadow Horse.

The “Therawool” saddle pad collection uses merino wool, weaved onto a poly-acrylic backing.

“The manufacturing process ensures that the pads are durable, breathable, easy to wash and can even be tumble dried,” said a spokesman for Shadow Horse.

“Unlike some wool pads on the market, they will not ‘felt up’ with continued use or washing.”

The collection includes dressage, showjumping, cross-country and general purpose styles.

All the pads come in white, sizes medium or large, with prices starting at £66.

German sheepskin saddle pad and numnah business Bartl is relaunching itself under a new name — Horse Pad Factory — and has appointed a UK distributor in a battle against fake products.

The family-run company has been increasingly concerned about the number of inferior goods bearing the Bartl trademark being faked by Chinese manufacturers.

Sales manager Hans Jurgen Bartl said: “UK customers were returning items, complaining that they were of poor quality or ill-fitting.

“Further investigations by our quality control team traced these goods and found they were not genuine Bartl products but were in fact copies being made in China.”

Bartl ceased deliveries to the UK in March 2009 because of these concerns.

But now it has taken a major step towards fighting the fakers and re-establishing itself in the UK market.

The company has changed its name to HPF (Horse Pad Factory) and all its products are now being produced under this new name.

They are being manufactured solely in Germany and are of the superior quality that customers have come to trust.

HPF has also appointed a single distributor for its new-label products in the UK. North Yorkshire-based Adala Ltd has been granted sole license to sell the exclusive range of HPF goods.

Adala Ltd director Amber Barnitt said: “This is a big task as the Chinese copies are easily available, especially online.

“Many other international brand names have had the same battle with imitation products — it’s a global problem. But customers can now get in touch with me directly to place orders from HPF that they know will be genuine.”

HPF is celebrating the relaunch of its company name with the arrival of a new, top-quality sheepskin line.

A new range of Merino lambskin saddlecloths has been launched by equestrian products distributor KM Elite Products.

International dressage rider and trainer Andrew Gould will endorse the range.

Andrew has worked closely with West-Sussex KM Elite Products with the design process, providing help and ideas from a rider’s prospective.

Q: I bought a numnah and the tackshop embroidered my horse’s name on to it. Back home we tried it on with the saddle, but the embroidery was covered up and it barely fitted.

We took it back, and the retailer got out a small saddle and tried it on with the numnah, claiming the problem was our fault, not theirs. The lady told us it was full size.

Are we legally entitled to have the numnah replaced?

ST, West Midlands

Alison Goodwin, director of the tackshop in question, Diamond Saddlery, recalls an adult purchasing a saddlecloth which was embroidered with the eight letters of her son’s horse’s name.

“The lady returned the cloth explaining the saddle obscured part of the embroidery,” said Alison. “This seemed unusual, as we embroider many cloths, and are aware of leaving space for the saddle flap. I asked about the make of the saddle, style and size, and put the saddlecloth under a 17in GP saddle in the store. It was OK. I also asked the customer to pop back with the cloth and her own saddle so I could assess the problem.

“We need to know whether the saddlecloth is the incorrect size for the saddle, or whether we have stitched it incorrectly,” she explained. “However, the customer has not returned to allow us to find a solution, and we have not received any correspondence regarding this.

“This situation is extremely unusual — our in-store embroidery staff are very experienced and embroider many items on a regular basis.”

Buyers have certain statutory rights under the Sale of Goods Act and the Sale and Supply of Goods to Consumers Regulations. A buyer should expect a purchased product to be of a satisfactory quality, must be “as described” on the advertising, label or in-house promotional information, and should also be “fit for purpose”.

Where a fault occurs within six months of purchase, and when the customer requests a repair or replacement, the buyer does not have to prove the fault exists. The trader must prove the goods were not faulty. However, circumstances can affect such a claim, for example if the seller believes the customer examined the item before purchase, and checked its sizing.

Executive director of the British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA), Claire Williams, says in cases of a dispute, BETA normally refers people to the Trading Standards Institute.

“If the trader in question is a BETA member, we can offer to arbitrate a solution for both parties,” said Claire.
