Equine and human members of the Household Cavalry have escaped London to enjoy their annual trip to Norfolk.

Horses and soldiers from the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment (HCMR) have been letting off steam on one of the highlights of the summer training camp, the ride on Holkham beach.

“The beach ride is excellent for both soldier and horse in many respects, particularly for horse welfare as the salt water is hugely beneficial for any nicks and cuts the horses may have picked up,” said Life Guards Squadron Leader, Major Tom Seccombe.

“The soldiers build on their skills in a new environment and take on a challenge where they ride without saddles and improve their balance.

“The drills that we learn for The Queen’s birthday parade are put into action here when we go from trot to canter, ensuring we remain a cohesive unit.

“Riding on the beach improves the confidence of the rider in a wide open space, which has tangible, notable benefits for our horses when we are on duty in London at Horse Guards.”

A special staircase suitable for horses has been built to open up a bridleway that had become unusable.

The bridleway runs along Little Ouse Path in the heart of the Brecks on the border between Norfolk and Suffolk, near Santon Downham and Brandon.

Norfolk County Council collaborated with the British Horse Society (BHS) to make the former towpath suitable for riders.

“The formerly muddy path was sadly steadily slipping into the river and due to the steep concrete steps (pictured, above) was completely inaccessible as a bridle route,” said Martin Wilby, chairman of Norfolk County Council’s environment, development and transport committee.

“This is the first time I’ve seen horse steps and they are certainly impressive and a very simple and logical solution to making this beautiful section of bridleway usable in the future.”

The council also levelled and resurfaced a 550m section of the path to help stabilise the popular route, which had become narrow, slippery and uneven.

Contractors used gabion baskets filled with rocks and stones — a method often used in coastal areas to prevent erosion and collapse.

The creation of the steps cost £22,000 and the resurfacing came to £40,000, which was paid for though the Heritage Lottery Fund and section 106 money as part of a local landscape conservation scheme.

Mark Weston, BHS director of access, said it is “fantastic” the steps have opened to allow riders safe access to the bridleway.

“We campaign to protect and extend safe off-road routes for riders, and it’s fantastic to work in collaboration with Norfolk County Council to ensure riders can continue to enjoy this bridleway,” he added.

The work was all carried out without disturbing the wildlife habitats near the river, as the route runs through the heart of a site of special scientific interest and special protection area.

The owner of three horses found “severely underweight”, with worm damage and ragwort poisoning, has been given a 10-year ban and suspended prison sentence.

Gordon Perkis, 62, of Low Common Road, Norwich, was given a 12-week sentence, suspended for a year, and forbidden from keeping horses for 10 years.

He was also ordered to pay £2,080 costs in the sentencing at Ipswich Magistrates’ Court on Monday (27 June).

In January, three emaciated mares — with body condition scores between 0 and 0.5 —were discovered at a location in Diss, Norfolk, by RSPCA and Redwings officers.

The horses were seized on welfare grounds and taken to a nearby Redwings centre, where they were given immediate veterinary treatment.

Despite intensive care, one of the horses — a piebald cob named Fanny — had to be put down due to severe worm damage to her digestive system.

“Although she had received some treatment for worms it was not appropriately prescribed or administered,” said Redwings vet Nicola Berryman.

“A lack of pasture rotation also contributed to the problem.

“Sadly we have seen several cases recently of young horses succumbing to redworm infestation due to inadequate parasite control and we would always recommend getting a vet’s advice on your horse’s worm prevention regime.”

The other horses, a 20-year-old black cob named Baby and a four-year-old skewbald called Cookie, are making progress.

“The road ahead in their recovery is rocky as the damage caused by their neglect has already taken hold,” added Ms Berryman.

“Both are displaying signs of liver damage as a result of ragwort poisoning, but our team is doing all they can to keep them happy and healthy for as long as we can.

“We want all horse owners to be aware of the severe and lasting damage that ragwort toxicity can cause.”

The prosecution was brought by the RSPCA and Perkis had admitted charges under the Animal Welfare Act at a hearing on 31 May.

RSPCA inspector Nicola Thorne said the case “serves as a reminder” that horse owners have a duty of care and “absolutely must” seek professional advice and veterinary treatment when their animals are unwell.

Following the sentencing, Redwings’ senior field officer Julie Harding said she was “pleased justice for these three poor mares has been served”.

“Their owner’s punishment does not bring Fanny back, but she did not die in vain and I hope other owners take note of the severity of this situation and the importance of their responsibility to their horses.”

A mare and foal have been rescued in Norfolk after being found in a field needing “urgent” veterinary attention.

Redwings was called to a field near Haddiscoe on Monday (11 January).

Senior field officer Julie Harding, Redwings’ vet Nic de Brauwere and RSPCA Inspector Ben Kirby, found a piebald cob mare with a foal at foot that needed immediate veterinary care.

Both horses were removed from the field and taken to Redwings.

“It was essential that the foal was taken to a safe environment for treatment,” said Julie.

“We couldn’t have done this without nearby welfare charity Horse Rescue Fund who we called upon for help in transporting the horses to our Reception Centre

“They helped us load the two relatively unhandled horses, drove them to our centre and even stayed to assist our vets in setting up the treatment for the horses. Their help with this urgent case was invaluable and we cannot thank them enough”.

Nic and vet Nicola Berryman provided care to the mare and foal through the night. It is not yet clear whether the foal will survive.

“We’re very concerned about this young foal and diagnosis for his current condition is underway,” said Nic.

Investigations into the rescue are ongoing.

This case comes just months after a similar mare and foal rescue by Redwings late last year.

In October 2015, the charity rescued a mare with a six-week-old foal at foot found on farmland near Harleston.

The pair — named Star and Rocket by Redwings — were both extremely thin. Star was in such a severe state of neglect that she sadly died less than two weeks after her rescue.

A foal is recovering after being found abandoned on a Christmas tree farm with leg and eye injuries.

The chestnut colt has been named “Rudolph” by charity World Horse Welfare, which has taken him in.

He was found in a field near Great Melton, Norfolk, by a member of the public on Friday (18 December) who called the RSPCA and World Horse Welfare.

Rudolph is receiving veterinary treatment for his injuries at World Horse Welfare’s Hall Farm rescue and rehoming centre, which is also in Norfolk.

“This poor little foal was in a sorry state — he was found alone in a field and was clearly injured,” said Ben Kirby of the RSPCA.

“One of his eyes was badly ulcerated and he had a nasty leg injury.

“It’s so sad to think somebody could have cruelly left Rudolph like this with such painful injuries, and just before Christmas too.”

Mr Kirby added it is “a relief” to know that at least one more horse in need of rescue is safe in time for Christmas.

World Horse Welfare is now appealing for information to try and find the foal’s owner.

Jacko Jackson, from the charity, is urging people to get in touch with them or the RSPCA.

“Rudolph has no microchip so we have no way of identifying his owner,” he said.

“This is sadly not an unusual case of a horse being dumped and left to fend for himself.

“Thankfully Rudolph was discovered and he is now in a safe place receiving the treatment he so desperately needed for his injuries.”

He added that it is fortunate the weather has been so mild recently or it could have been a “very different story”.

“Thankfully Rudolph is now in safe hands,” he said. “Christmas has come early for this little pony.”

The RSPCA is appealing for information after a horse was put down after being found emaciated and collapsed in a Norfolk field.

The horse was found in a paddock just off a public footpath in Doe Lane, Old Buckenham, earlier this month (3 December).

“The poor mare had been left tethered in the enclosed field with two other horses, but due to her emaciated condition had become so weak she had collapsed,” said RSPCA inspector Laura Sayer.

“Unfortunately we are seeing more and more heartbreaking incidents involving neglected horses like this and it is extremely distressing for anyone to see.”

Redwings Horse Sanctuary field officer Julie Harding and Welfare Veterinary Surgeon Nicola Berryman attended.

Inspector Sayer, who was off-duty at the time, noticed the van at the side of the road and went to help.

“Julie and I attended the mare following a call to our welfare line about a horse that was struggling to stand,” said Nicola.

“When arriving at the site, the mare was down and with her tether trapped beneath her leg; she was very emaciated and therefore didn’t have the strength to free herself.

“Distressingly, her lengthy struggle to stand was evident from the deep trenches she’s dug into the ground with her hooves. She must have been down for several hours.

“Our attempts to help her up sadly failed and it was clear it was too late for this poor mare, so upsettingly the kindest option was to put her to sleep.”

The mare is estimated to be around four years old and was not microchipped.

Julie added: “I dread to think what further suffering this mare would have endured if we hadn’t found her. Left to continue her struggle in the cold and dark, she wouldn’t have made it through the night so at least we could give her a peaceful passing.”

A lifeboat crew is warning riders of the dangers of hacking on the beach after three horses and their riders stranded by the tide yesterday (13 October).

Wells lifeboat was called out to the riders who were cut off by the tide and were stuck on an island off Burnham Overy Staithe, on Holkham beach in Norfolk.

The crew are trained to tackle difficult rescues, but this one they had to undertake on foot.

The riders had taken their horses out to the beach and had crossed over to Scolt Head Island on the other side of the harbour at low water. While there, they miscalculated the time of the tide and ended up being cut off and unable to return across the channel.

The lifeboat was called at around 6pm on Monday (12 October), however, the rescue wasn’t complete until 2am.

“Even though they were advised not to, by both the RNLI crew and the coastguard that it would be too dangerous for them to return at low water in the dark, the three women decided they wanted re-cross the channel at the earliest opportunity,” said a spokesman.

“They were dissuaded from making the crossing late last night, which would have meant wading through a dangerous ebbing tide, instead they were persuaded to wait until low water at 2am.”

The crew, using their transporter tractor to light the way, guided the group back to safety on foot as there was now no water in the channel.

Lifeboat spokesman, Chris Hardy added: “The crew are trained for most eventualities, but it not often you rescue people and animals on foot. Thankfully all ended well and no one was hurt.”

Peter Rainsford of the lifeboat crew urged other riders to take care while riding on Holkham beach.

“The beach looks beautiful to ride on, which it is, but there are some areas where it becomes dangerous,” he told H&H.

“These are avoidable dangers. It’s a lovely sandy beach but when the tide comes in there are areas that you might have crossed a channel. You are then stuck in impassable water.

“Seek local advice and understand the tide times. And always carry a mobile phone.”

Competitors have had headcollars, rugs and shavings stolen from the on-site stables at the Royal Norfolk Show.

The thieves struck in the middle of the night yesterday (Tuesday 24 June).

Lauren Roberts, a freelance groom working at the show, said her owner wasn’t affected as she had padlocked her stable, but neighbouring horses had headcollars and hoods taken off them.

One owner had 20 bales of shavings stolen, and many lost lead ropes that had been tied by doors.

The losses were all reported to the police today (Wednesday 25 June) in the early hours of the opening day of the 2-day show.

Pete Joyner, press officer for the show, said: “We are aware of a small number of incidents on the site. We take security extremely seriously and are working with the police to resolve the issues.”

Around 10 people reported thefts to the police, who are carrying out further investigations.

The stables are covered by the showground’s onsite security said Mr Joyner.

The Royal Norfolk has 1,600 horses competing across the 2 days.

“We have several Horse of the Year Show qualifiers — horses are a very important part of the show,” added Mr Joyner.

A man from Norfolk has been ordered to pay costs of more than £4,000 after two of his donkeys were found emaciated.

David Lucas of Bushy Common, Gressenhall, appeared before King’s Lynn Magistrates Court on Thursday 6 October and pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to the animals.

He also pleaded guilty to two charges of failing to produce a equine passport when required.

He was given a two-year conditional discharge and ordered to pay £1,600 in costs to Norfolk County Council trading standards department and £2,800 to World Horse Welfare.

World Horse Welfare received a call from a concerned member of the public on the 7 February about two donkeys in a field off Litcham Road in Gressenhall.

Field officers found three-year-old Hermione and two-year-old Dumbledore very underweight, with poor feet and no shelter.

The donkeys were removed on 9 February and taken into care by World Horse Welfare.

World Horse Welfare’s Jacko Jackson said: “These donkeys were in a terrible condition and if it had not been for a member of the public noticing how poor they looked and contacted us, their outcome could have been much worse. It shows that the Animal Welfare Act works and gives a signal that all animals have a right to proper and correct care.”

Norfolk Polo Club is to host a new weekend festival (June 18-19) at Langley Abbey Estate.

Saturday will feature four matches, an exhibition game and evening entertainment, including live six-piece band, for those in the VIP area until around 1am.

Confirmed for the exhibition match so far are England arena internationals Tim Brown, Mark Holmes and ex Black Bear high-goal player Fabio Lavinia.

Sunday’s entertainment includes another three matches including the grand final and trophy presentation.

Chris Townsend, owner of the Langley Abbey estate, said: “The weekend in June will provide a very new and exciting event with an action packed two days for players and spectators alike.

“We are expecting teams from around the country to come to Norfolk and compete for the title event.

“The exhibition match will feature some major names from the world of polo and this will give people the chance to see the speed and agility demanded at that level of the game.”

The club came into existence in 2010 and is growing in numbers following interest from people in the local area.

The festival will be sponsored by Coutts & Co and the Eastern Daily Press.

Mark Noble, senior private banker at the Norwich branch of Coutts & Co, said: “Polo is regarded as the sport of kings and is always well attended by many of our clients from landowners to entrepreneurs.

“We looks forward to seeing some familiar faces at this year’s festival at the historic Langley Abbey Estate.”

A horse is recovering after being hit “deliberately” by a car pulling a trailer while being ridden in a country lane.

The right side of Nigel’s body was slashed from “hind leg to head” when the horse was hit near Mattishall in Norfolk.

The eight-year-old Westfalen, who has appeared in advertising for Allen & Page horse feed, was hospitalised for a week and faces eight weeks of box rest following the incident on 19 September.

His owner, Lisa McQuiston, of Mattishall, said: “We were out walking. Then we heard a 4×4 with a trailer on the back coming really fast.

“My friend Natasha who was on Nigel — I was on another horse — she put her arm out to slow the driver down.

“But he put his hand on the horn repeatedly and drove faster.

“He knocked Nigel literally to his knees. I couldn’t say how fast he was going. Natasha stayed on.”

Nigel was tended by a vet, who stapled and bandaged the horse at the scene. He was then transferred to Rossdale and partners equine hospital in Newmarket.

Miss McQuiston said: “He is extremely traumatised; I didn’t expect him to be this bad. He has to stay in the stable, resting for eight weeks. He’s extremely sore and very cut up.

“The trailer hit Nigel all the way along the right side of his body from his hind legs, to his shoulder, to his head, his knee and even cut through his double bridle.

“We are dealing with the obvious problems. But we don’t know if there’s any internal or psychological damage.

A Norfolk police spokesman confirmed a man was helping them with their inquiries.

Two stables have been burnt down in a suspected arson attack in Norfolk.

During the attack 3 horses were whipped and a 4th had its mane cut off.

The attack happened between 11pm on Thursday 7 August and 8.40pm on Friday 8 August at Bungalow Lane in Norwich.

Police are now calling for witnesses to come forward.

Sergeant Rachel Cork from Norfolk police said: “This was an apparently unprovoked attack and our enquiries are continuing.

“Any incident involving cruelty to animals will be taken seriously. Anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity prior to or after the incident should please get in touch with us.”

A disabled carriage-driver has been voted Norfolk’s “inspirational sports person of the year” at the county’s inaugural sports awards ceremony last Sunday.

Lindsey Tyas, who suffered a near-fatal car accident at the age of four, was on the silver medal-winning British team at the FEI Para-Equestrian World Carriage Driving Championships 2006.

Former Anglia TV sports presenter Kevin Piper hosted the ceremony, with double Olympic gold medalist Dame Kelly Holmes as special guest.

THE International League for the Protection of Horses (ILPH) has appointed Sue Hodgkins as the new centre manager for its Hall Farm rescue centre in Snetterton, Norfolk.

Sue, 40, joined the ILPH in 1997 following teaching work in commercial yards and training international driving teams.

The ILPH is one of the world’s leading equine welfare charities and is currently trying to increase public activities and education at its centres.
