Tributes paid to team chase and hunting star

Tributes have been paid to a hunting star that died following a team chasing accident.

Dai Harrison’s popular horse, Dutch, had been a stalwart of the Boring Gorings’ open team for the past few seasons.

The 12-year-old gelding was put down after sustaining a leg injury at the Berkeley team chase on 4 October.

By Catherston Liberator, the bay gelding came to the Harrisons’ yard in the summer of 2011 on the condition that he would not be sold.

Bred to event by Jan Whitehead, the horse found his forte on the hunting field.

Dai, who retired as a master of the Monmouthshire earlier this year, also let his son’s partner Tabby Prest borrow Dutch to learn side-saddle on.

“I rode him for a whole season side-saddle,” Tabby told H&H. “We both learnt together.”

With Dutch, Tabby became the first person to tackle the Royal Welsh inter-hunt relay riding side-saddle.

They combination also took second place in the Dianas of the Chase cross-country side-saddle race in 2014.

“Primarily, he was an amazing hunter who led the field flawlessly over all sorts of obstacles,” said Tabby.

“I have never seen him refuse a fence.”

She remembered how the first hunting fence she jumped side-saddle on him was a set of 1.10 rails — which he cleared with ease.

“He was really a horse for everybody — we are all predictably devastated,” she added.

The horse was featured in H&H’s report of the Meynell and South Staffs team chase, where the team came third in the open.

“My horse actually lacks turn of foot as he is part-warmblood — his grandsire was Dutch Courage — but he makes up for it with his turning and jumping,” Dai told H&H at the time.

The sky’s the limit for Monmouthshire Hunt

Not content with the adrenlin rush of the hunting field, 8 daredevils from the Monmouthshire Hunt decided to skydive to raise money for charity.

Huntsman Matthew Hickmott and subscriber Dave Thomas came up with the novel fundraising idea last April after bad weather forced the cancellation of the Monmouthshire Hunt point-to-point.

The team soon expanded to include Andrew Harris, Llewellyn Harrison, Lucy Morgan, Olly Hopkinson, Alan Williams and British Para Dressage team vet, Rod Fisher — all hunt supporters and subscribers.

The sky dive was originally set for 28 June, but had to be postponed due to bad weather.

The 15,000ft dive was moved to 19 July when fortunately the weather allowed them to complete the jump.

Each team member spent 6min in decent – 1min of free fall followed by 5min under a parachute canopy.

All together, the team raised nearly £5000, and a contribution was given to the Society for the Welfare of Horses & Ponies at St Maughans, run by Jenny Macgregor.

Monmouthshire wins national mounted games title

Monmouthshire open mounted games team are the new British champions after stealing the title from 2010 winners Shropshire in a fast and furious run-off at Olney Park Equestrian Centre (29 August).

The highest qualifying teams from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland competed in 10 relay races to decide the top team in Britain.

The Monmouthshire team consists of Jack Capel, Mark Devitt, April Wilson, Ulrika Alexanderson and Danny Spencer.

They also claimed the jackpot prize-fund of more than £1,000 at Glanusk Horse Trials (30 June-3 July).

Andrew rides to the rescue of horses stranded by flooding

A Welsh horse owner saddled up and rode to the rescue of a group of ponies stranded by floods in their field.

There were rainstorms and heavy flooding in Usk, Monmouthshire on Tuesday, 15 January, and in a field next to the livery yard where Andrew Williams keeps his horse, seven ponies, including four pregnant mares, became trapped by the rising water.

So Andrew tacked up hunter Ben and rode into the field to herd them up cowboy style.

“There was about four feet of water in the field and the brook looked as though it was about to burst its bank,” said Andrew. “There was really no other way across except by swimming on a horse.”

“The ponies are quite wild and although I tried to get close enough to catch one and lead it I could not get near to them.”

But after around half an hour he managed to herd them onto high land away from the flooded area.

“They were not very cooperative but in the end I managed it and I understand they have all been checked over and are fine.”
