The role What3words can play has been emphasised after two injured riders were located thanks to the app.

Dot Cuy and Rachel Moyes were both riding alone when they fell, on 30 April and 27 June respectively.

Dot’s part-Shire Cookie was spooked at a road crossing in Ruislip Woods, near London, and reared, coming down on the road. Runner Nigel Ealand saw what happened, and called an ambulance.

“I ended up speaking with a woman in Aberdeen, who had no knowledge of the area,” Nigel said. “Describing my location on Ducks Hill road near the car park entrance was far too vague, which is when a lightbulb went off; I had downloaded What3words for emergencies.

“I gave her my What3words address and the ambulance arrived within minutes.”

Dot was taken to hospital, where it was found she had torn ligaments, dislocated a toe, and fractured her foot.

“All in all, I came out of it well, as I could have died,” she said, adding that Cookie was unhurt.

Dot is now recommending the app to as many people as possible.

“I downloaded it in hospital,” she said. “I’d heard about it and thought it was a good idea, but since the accident I completely understand the importance of having it. I’ve also shared it on Facebook so I like to think I’ve done my bit in raising awareness of how important it is.”

In the What3words app, the world is divided into 3x3m squares, each of which has a unique three-word combination. Emergency services are among those that recommend its use.

Rachel fell from a friend’s horse, Ben, whom she was riding in an arena with no one else there.

“I landed on my back, and hit a rock,” she said. “I couldn’t move, I was stuck and in excruciating pain.

“I rang the ambulance, but the phone handler wasn’t from the area. I found the name of the road on Google Maps, but even that didn’t narrow down her search enough. Just as I was giving up, she asked me if I had the What3words app.

“I gave the call handler the What3words address and she said, ‘I know exactly where you are, the ambulance will be with you soon.’ Help arrived 20 minutes later, and I was taken to hospital. I was so relieved that they found me quickly, I don’t want to think how much worse the pain would have been if I had to wait any longer.”

Rachel is recovering from her spinal fractures, and has been encouraging others to download the app.

“I was so relieved I had it; you never think that stuff like this can happen but it’s really important to have the app just in case, especially if you like to go out on adventures on your own,” she said.

The British Horse Society told H&H it recommends riders download the app, for use in breakdowns as well as riding incidents.

A new service is providing riders with a QR code that enables first responders to quickly access their vital information in the event of an accident.

The ICE-scan (in case of emergency) app and service has been aimed at equestrians, cyclists and bikers and creates individualised, extra-durable stickers that can be fixed to helmets or equipment.

It allows medical and personal information to be safely stored using up-to-date technology that is familiar to paramedics, doctors, the police and fire service, who can peel back the stickers on arrival to access the code.

ICE-scan app founder Bryn Williams, who has a background in motorsports, said the idea for the service had come from the tradition of motorcyclists storing vital information on pieces of paper inside their helmets.

“When I was a young lad tearing round on a motorbike, a local bobby, who was a police motorcyclist, told me there was an unwritten rule that motorcyclists wrote their details on paper and put it inside their helmets, and in the event of an accident the police and ambulance service would always look inside the helmet,” he said.

“But the last thing you may want to do is take someone’s helmet off after an accident, so what the ICE app is doing is introducing a modern twist to an old dilemma.”

ICE-scan charges an annual subscription that allows users to enter their personal information into the app. They are then posted a sheet of five stickers to fix on their riding equipment or phone which are activated via the app on arrival.

The subscription costs £24 a year and includes the cost of the tags, which are printed by a company specialising in durable, outdoor stickers. H&H readers can use code HAH25 for a 25% discount, to £1.50 per month.

Bryn told H&H ICE-scan pp had been in talks with the College of Paramedics and the Association of Ambulance Chief Executives, which felt the app and QR tags would be a “credible asset in their daily work of saving lives”.

They have already recommended that all ambulance crews look for the tags and have the ICE-scan app downloaded on their tablets. The QR tags do not require the app in order to be scanned however, as this can be done with the camera app on a smartphone.

“The only difference is the way the information is displayed on the mobile camera and on the app. It’s clearer to the eye in the app and when scanned by a camera looks like a Word document,” Bryn said.

“You can download the app for free and even put basic info in before paying but to put in full medical info and to physically have the ICE-scan tags requires a subscription.”

The company has also started working with locator app What3Words and is working to integrate the app, so that the precise location details of a casualty can be given.

It is hoped that as awareness of the app grows, members of the public will also know to look for the QR code and be able to give vital information, including location, to the emergency services.

“When a QR code is scanned, what comes up is year of birth, name and medical details. Once we have integrated with What3Words, location will come up first,” Bryn said

The company does not store personal addresses on the app and users are warned whenever a QR code is scanned, so they can be alerted to any attempted misuse in the event of equipment theft.

“Should a third party scan your QR code, you are sent a text and an email to tell you someone has accessed your code and you have the ability to go back onto app and block your account for a day, three days or permanently,” Bryn said. “You have full control over the information.”

A rider suffered multiple bite wounds and had an asthma attack as she tried to get away from an out-of-control dog in a terrifying attack.

Freelance trainer Ashleigh Compton was returning from a hack with a client’s pony, Sparks, on 6 September at Dapwell Lane, near Queen Charlton, Somerset, when a collie-type brown and white dog appeared.

“The dog was circling around Sparks’ feet and in the distance I could hear a man shouting for it, but I couldn’t work out where he was. Sparks started to dance around and reared so I thought I would be better off on the ground and decided to get off,” she told H&H.

“Suddenly the dog went for me over and over again. It was biting at my arms and legs and there was nothing I could do but Sparks was so good and stayed with me. I decided to run leading Sparks and the dog chased us 100 yards, then as we turned a corner it ran off. I couldn’t see the owner but I assume he was in one of the fields either side of the lane. He must have heard what was happening – there’s no way he couldn’t know.”

Ashleigh suffered an asthma attack as she made her way back to the yard.

“I took my inhaler multiple times but I wasn’t getting any better and when I got to the yard I phoned for an ambulance,” said Ashleigh.

“There was nobody on the yard but a lady was walking on the footpath that runs alongside the yard and saw me so she waited with me until the ambulance arrived. She went to the end of the driveway to see if she could see it coming and came across a couple out for a walk who happened to be doctors so they came to help too.”

Ashleigh was treated at hospital for her asthma and seven bite marks; one on her arm and the rest on her leg, including one that had gone through her boot. She has since put an appeal on Facebook to try and find the dog’s owner.

“I had no idea my post would get the response it did, it’s been shared more than 1,000 times and I’ve had a lot of supportive messages. The main reason I want to find the owner is it is clearly a very unhappy dog, and had that been a child you don’t want to think about what might have happened. I’m a real dog lover and had dogs in the past but people need to have better recall and be aware that these animals are bred to chase things – and they do,” she said.

“I also want to raise awareness of the What3Words app. With my job I go all over the place and even though I know the area reasonably well I didn’t know the road names and the yard is quite out of the way, so trying to tell someone exactly where you are when you’re panicking is difficult. I couldn’t breathe very well and couldn’t describe how to get the ambulance to me. I’ve had the app on my phone for more than a year and never opened it until that moment. I think it’s really important for riders, walkers and cyclists to have it god forbid something happens and you’re trying to get help.”

Avon & Somerset Police is appealing for information about the dog attack, which took place at around 1.30pm.

“If you have any information which could help officers to identify the dog’s owner, please call 101 quoting reference 5221207041,” said a police spokesman.

Advances in technology promise to improve horse welfare and traceability as the equestrian world moves into the digital age.

Knowing where horses are and what happens to them throughout their lives has always been inseparable from equine welfare, and traceability is in the spotlight more than ever before. Brexit travel implications, the Covid pandemic and equine herpes virus (EHV) outbreaks, plus concerning allegations raised in Panorama (news, 29 July) have heightened awareness as to why traceability is key.

The FEI’s HorseApp, Weatherbys ePassport and EquiTrace are among the latest developments improving how horses’ movements and health are monitored from paper-based systems.

From this year, all thoroughbred foals born in Britain and Ireland will be issued with a Weatherbys ePassport. In a nutshell, this is a secure place to keep all legally required details. Its vaccination and horse location records were already in use, prior to the full official launch in July, to track breeding stock and support British and Irish authorities with their pandemic “return to racing” protocols.

Weatherbys chief executive Russell Ferris told H&H that the ePassport’s launch “couldn’t be more timely”.

“Equine welfare is quite rightly the priority for anyone involved with horses and the ePassport gives them the mechanism to manage everything relating to equine identification, health, welfare, movement and ownership through a simple-to-use single, secure platform,” he said.

“As if the welfare benefits brought by the Weatherbys ePassport were not enough, many in the equine world are also looking to the ePassport to ease European horse movement post-Brexit – particularly when it comes to interoperability between it and Government systems. As many in the equine world have said, the importance of the ePassport cannot be overstated.”

The FEI updated its HorseApp in April, to monitor horse health and movements and help with a safe return to sport following EHV-1 outbreaks. This means grooms, riders and owners can easily check horses in and out from venues and upload any other health information, as required.

“[The FEI HorseApp] is a key element in ensuring a safe return to competition today and in minimising the impact of a disease outbreak in future,” said FEI veterinary director Göran Åkerström at the time.

‘What isn’t measured, isn’t done’

“Our mission is to get horse identification and health care into the digital age,” EquiTrace app co-founder and vet Jennifer Corley told H&H.

The subscription app, on which more than 19,500 horses are registered, works by securely storing a horse’s ID, location, health and medical records. Information can only be added to a horse’s record when his microchip is scanned, at which point his GPS location is also updated. It is compatible with any microchip, works with or without signal and means a groom can update the app and the horse’s owner, trainer and vets have access to up-to-date records from anywhere in the world.

“Covid has taught us all this: if you get an infectious disease, like herpes, like influenza, the first thing you have to do is trace all those movements, and yet [people aren’t] keeping those records because it’s just impossible with the current solutions,” said Ms Corley.

EquiTrace has a function to turn on alerts for medication and vaccination reminders, plus withdrawal times, and drug barcodes can be scanned by the app, so details and batch numbers are accurately recorded. This saves admin time, and also means it can be used by anyone, so literacy is not a barrier.

“The health record is linked to the microchip, so essentially the horse’s medical records can never be lost, they’re always with the animal,” she said, adding that this function could benefit all kinds of scenarios where a horse and the owner are in different places, from emergency vet visits to loaning or rehoming.

“At the moment when you rehome an animal, there’s almost no way to check up on that animal without physically going out to visit,” she said.

“Even [for a charity] just going through your list to call every single rehomed animal is going to be almost impossible. You could ask somebody who’s rehoming an animal to take a scanner, and then you have complete control on whatever you want to check up on. You could say, ‘I want the animal vaccinated once a year,’ and then we can set the system so it creates a list of anyone who’s not complying.”

She added: “Whatever we do to improve horse welfare, what isn’t measured isn’t done. And we have to have a way to easily communicate, from the people on the ground who are looking after the horses, to these organisations who are responsible for their welfare – and it has to be simple.”

What3words

This innovative app should be on every rider’s phone. What3words splits the world into a grid and assigns every 3mx3m square in that grid a unique three-word address. These randomly-assigned words, for example career.puzzle.area, are as accurate as GPS coordinates. The app makes it fast and easy to communicate exact locations, which is especially handy in rural or remote regions, and it has already helped rescue services find horses and riders in need by pinpointing their exact location. The app works offline, is available in more than 40 languages (including Welsh) and can be used anywhere in the world.

Equilab

Use this app to track and analyse your schooling sessions – simply carry your phone on your person while riding and the app will record gait distribution, speed, and strides per minute, and can even tell you how much time you have spent on each rein. It can also record your route and distance on hacks, and allows somebody else to remotely track your ride and see your location as part of the safety tracking feature. Owners can collate information about their horse and organise their diary, as well as sharing details with friends, trainers and vets.

Trackener

This app allows you to help monitor health, detect issues and prevent anxiety in your horse. The Trackener device analyses 24/7 your horse’s activity, location, movement, behaviour and heart rate. It can be placed within either an ergonomically designed horse bib, comfortable on the horse in the stable and in the field, and on a girth sleeve for when the horse is being exercised. It allows for unprecedented insights about your horse’s life via the app wherever you are and receive real time alerts in case of critical issues.

TestPro British Eventing

The newest offering from the team behind Dressage TestPro, which was launched in 2018. This app can be used in or out of the saddle to provide an easy and effective way for event riders to learn their dressage tests. Listen to the test being read out while you’re riding, or watch it being “drawn” in front of you, with the option to draw it on screen yourself to make sure it is fully ingrained in your memory before your competition. All the British Eventing dressage tests are loaded onto the app, and there is the option to add FEI tests too. All updates to tests are included in the app free of charge, so you know you’re learning the right test at the right time.

Grooms Go To

If you’re a professional groom, especially if you spend lots of time travelling, your life might be about to get a whole lot easier with this brand new app, launched by Daniel Deusser’s groom Sean Lynch. It allows you to quickly find stabling and vet clinics close to your location, as well as fill out, sign and send paperwork, book flights and ferries, and stay on top of your horse’s vaccinations, feeding routines and much more wherever you happen to be. It can even alert you to new grooming job vacancies, and help you navigate tricky cross-border Covid-19 regulations. OS Maps

Discover Britain on horseback — the official mapping app from Ordnance Survey gives you high-res access to all the Ordnance Survey maps, enabling you to find your local bridleways and plan your routes before you set out. The integrated GPS tracker will help you keep track of your current location while you’re out and about, so hopefully you’ll never get lost. This is particularly useful for long distance and endurance riders — as well as those who enjoy exploring for fun.

Emergency services are encouraging all riders to download the what3words free smart phone app

A smart phone app that can save “vital time” locating an injured person after an accident is being increasingly used by riders and emergency services.

The what3words app operates by providing three unique words for every three square metres of land around the world to identify precise locations. If a rider falls off, they simply give the operator the three words to enable emergency services to locate them.

What3words chief marketing officer Giles Rhys Jones told H&H the free app is recognised by more than 75 of approximately 120 emergency services in the UK.

“This year we’ve seen many cases of riders who have been injured and used what3words to receive help,” he said. “One of the first questions you get asked when you phone 999 is where is the emergency; that can be particularly challenging for riders. When every minute counts, vital time can be saved by providing the exact location, and not relying on landmarks or directions.

“Words are easier than reading GPS coordinates, and can be passed down the line if emergency services need to coordinate a number of different services or radio to officers on the ground.”Mr Jones said the three words will never change and riders do not need a cellular or data connection for it to work.“Our system needs a GPS signal which is pretty universal,” said Mr Jones. “You can be in the middle of nowhere and be able to find the three word address. To make it as easy to use as possible and reduce the chance of mistakes, we’ve positioned similar sounding three-word addresses very far apart. We’ve also included an auto-suggest feature, which will pick up on spelling errors and suggest a nearby three-word address.”

Rider Steph Lynch used the app after her horse fell into a ditch and had to be rescued on farmland in Newcastle on 15 October.

“I was struggling to explain to the operator where I was because we were in the middle of about six fields,” she told H&H.

“I remembered I had the app, gave the three words it showed and the operator knew exactly where I was and which fire brigades to send.”

Liz O’Donoghue, the mother of a teenage rider who fell from her pony in woodland in North Yorkshire on 29 October, told H&H the app took away the need for a “middle man”.

“As a parent, I felt helpless on the phone to the ambulance service; you tend to know the local area, but you don’t usually know the postcode of a farmer’s land or woods,” she said.

Northumberland Fire Service is one of the emergency services that uses the app.

A spokesman told H&H: “The app is so important — especially for riders. We recommend the app simply because it keeps you safe — you are never lost as we will always find you.”

A spokesman for Yorkshire Ambulance Service said the service was keen to spread the word about the app, which is being used by all emergency services in Yorkshire.

“Identifying where help is needed is critical and this can be near impossible if you are in an area with no address. The app can be effective for rural locations like farms, beaches or moorland where it can be complex to communicate location without points of reference nearby,” he said.

A free app is offering owners the opportunity to earn money in exchange for riding.

Huufe app, which launched in 2018 and allows owners to create user profiles for their horses and track their rides, has released a new feature allowing riders to turn its digital currency, HuufeCoin, into real money.

The first offer pays riders £100 in exchange for 1,000 HuufeCoins, and the second, an endurance offer, pays riders £1,000 in exchange for 5,000 HuufeCoins.

Riders can earn one HuufeCoin for every 30 minutes of riding with a maximum of three coins per day, which can be exchanged once they have accumulated enough coins. Riders can also earn a daily coin by opening the app, and by recommending it to friends and family.

Huufe founders Charlie Trietline and Richard Philips said they have been working on how to reward riders for their equine passion.

“We asked riders what they wanted from an app and it became apparent that if there was a way that technology could convert riding into something valuable, we would be on to something,” said Mr Trietline.

“Early adopters of HuufeCoin will be able to cash in soon and dedicated riders have a real challenge to go for with our £1,000 endurance offer.”

New technology launched this year could soon beam vital statistics about your horse directly to your smartphone.

Horseware Ireland has developed a temperature and humidity monitor that is designed to sit underneath a rug and sends readings to the HorsePal app.

It was revealed at the British Equestrian Trade Association’s (BETA) trade fair (24-26 January) and was highly commended in the BETA innovation awards.

The app takes information from the monitor and combines it with the weather forecast for the following three days to recommend a rug for your horse.

Users will also be able to add other information, such as their horse’s condition, age, breed and whether he is clipped or not, which will have a bearing on the choice.

“We have a vision for a whole load of sensors,” Horseware Ireland co-founder Tom MacGuinness told H&H.

“We wanted something very simple for the launch to get on the ladder.

“The exciting thing is that this is the first in a whole line of upgrades.”

The current sensor requires you to be within 15 metres of your horse, but there are plans to extend this.

Mr MacGuinness added that future features will include a memory for the previous three days, a movement sensor and alerts sent direct to your phone for any unusual equine behaviour.

The app will launch as a stand-alone next month and the monitor will be available from the autumn, when the two will be integrated.

By the end of Christmas Day, you’ll have watched so much TV you’ll be afraid your eyes have gone square and you have moulded to the sofa. You’ll be so full of turkey you will barely be able to move and the thought of another mince pie will make you want to rejoice and cry in equal measure.

Here are six activities to give you an equestrian fix over the festive period

1. Support your local hunt

Blow away the cobwebs at your local hunt’s Boxing Day meet. Whether you’re flying the hedges, following on foot or just catching up with supporters over a glass of port at the meet, enjoy the fresh air and the exhilaration of the sport.

2. Head to the races

Some of the best National Hunt racing happens over the Christmas period, so shake off that sherry hangover with a day at the track. The King George at Kempton is a highlight with top racing and is the perfect way to spend Boxing Day with the family.

Further south? Wincanton also hosts a Boxing Day fixture, meanwhile the Welsh National takes place at Chepstow on 27 December.

3. Work off that Christmas pud

A Christmas jumper will hide a multitude of sins, however, if you’re feeling a little overindulged then a long hack is the perfect remedy — add in some faster work and you’ll burn around 250 calories an hour. And for that extra fitness kick, pick up that pitchfork and get shovelling — a thorough mucking out session can burn up to 450 calories we’re told.

4. Watch some equestrian telly

After all that mucking out, riding, walking and grooming, you’re tired out. It must be time for another hot chocolate and turkey sandwich. You’ve practically forgotten what the sofa looks like it’s been so long…. Dig out those equestrian oldies for a family film-fest. National Velvet, Black Beauty or Channel 4 Racing — you’ll be fighting over the remote.

5. Relax with a good book

It’s cold outside. Granny’s asleep on the sofa and the kids are occupied with their new Xbox/train set/football. Why not settle down with one of the equestrian books you were given for Christmas? Santa didn’t bring you one?

6. There’s an app for that

Google “equestrian apps” and you are bombarded with options — everyone from vets to trainers has jumped on the app bandwagon. And unless you know what you’re looking for it can be overwhelming.

To help you navigate this exciting world we’ve picked some of our favourite apps from across the disciplines, which are currently available via iPhone/iTunes App Store (iA) and/or Android Market (AM).

Competition

CourseWalk (iA: £6.99, AM: £6.59) allows you to upload full course details and a map, plus distances, terrain, photos of fences etc, then keep records or share.

Cross-country (iA: £5.99) records cross-country courses, showing fences, waypoints and timing markers for accurate riding to time. Photos, audio and video help all riders visualise and memorise the course and you can also share the courses. Used by leading riders, trainers and course designers worldwide. Create a course map for event organisers with the CourseDesigner add-on. CrossCountry Lite is available free and provides pre-recorded course maps with photos, videos, audio and notes available to download from the CrossCountry app website. Friends can also email and share a course they have recorded. It does not require phone reception or internet once a course is downloaded.

FEI EquiTests 1 (iA, AM) lets you try out a free sample of the FEI young riders individual competition test. There is also FEI EquiTests Dressage (iA: £6.99, AM: £6.30); FEI EquiTests Eventing (iA: £6.99, AM: £6.30) and FEI EquiTests Para (iA: £6.99, AM: £6.30).

CleanSports (iA, AM) is free from FEI, designed to update riders on the FEI CleanSport prohibited substances database — boring but essential.

Training

Horse hub (iA) is free and provides access to a variety of equestrian content, including training audio and video tips provided by some of the world’s best riders and trainers.

EquiTempo (iA: £1.49) has a metronome utility that matches the tempo you want to maintain when riding, helping you develop a consistent and rhythmic tempo. Plug into an arena sound system and change tempo to suit movements.

101 Dressage (iA: £13.99, AM: £12.39) is a popular collection of dressage training exercises.

101 Schooling (iA: £13.20) gives you quick access to easy-to-follow exercises, which include all the information you need to ride the movement correctly.

Hoofa Doofa (AM: £0.99) allows you to track your ride, see how far you have gone, how fast and see your route on a map. The app also allows you to automatically send a message to your ‘ride guardian’, if you fall or get into trouble (stop) and the message will show your exact location.

Track my Hack (AM) lets you ride and record your hack and share your route with friends.

Stable management

Ask The Vet (iA: £3.99) taps in to the expertise of Horse & Hound’s experts to bring you the answers to the most demanding questions. Only available on iPads.

Horse Budget (iA, £0.69) helps you keep a track on your equestrian spending.

Stable Mate (iA, AM) is free and automatically creates a calendar of events, appointments and reminders to make it easy for you to keep your horse’s essential healthcare needs on course.

EquineVet (iA: £2.49) offers an extraordinarily extensive amount of health information, including the 10 most common equine illnesses you need to be familiar with.

Horse Side Vet Guide (AM: £3.04) offers veterinary advice.

Safety

PRP Rescue (iA, AM) is a free pay-on-use horsebox breakdown and recovery service using GSP.

Rescue Me  (£15 per year) was launched by PRP Rescue Services and is designed to help locate riders who have fallen off and may be injured.

Alert5 (iA) does what it says on the tin — it alerts up to 5 people from your contacts list with your exact location stating you need urgent assistance if you get into trouble out riding.

Racing and betting

William Hill, Betfred, Paddy Power, Coral, Victor Chandler, the Tote and Betfair (iA, AM, BlackBerry) all have mobile betting apps, but visit their websites for download details as they vary between iPhone App Store and Android.

Racing TV and Racing Post (iA, AM) both have excellent horseracing industry apps; for general racing app details visit www.attheraces.com.

Betting calculators are available from Bet Calc UK (iA: free) and Bet Compute (iA: £1.99) and are very useful for working out multiple betting. 
Oddschecker (iA) is free and one of the best-known odds comparison sites, aimed at serious punters.

Events

Badminton Horse Trials (iA, AM) keeps you up-to-date with all the news, views and gossip from one of the world’s most prestigious horse trials for free.

The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials (iA, AM) is also free and will bring you all the latest news, results and competition details direct to your iPhone — it will even keep a note of your car park row number for you.

Hickstead (iA, AM) provides live updates for competitors and visitors and includes an in-built map that gives you traffic updates and directions straight to the event for free.

Ascot (iA, AM) is designed to be your free on-course raceday guide providing you with up to the minute odds and racing information.

A product is being developed so that horse owners can remotely check the temperature, heart and respiratory rate of their equine companion from afar.

SeeHorse is a small device worn on a horse’s headcollar or bridle that can send information about the animal through Bluetooth to an owner’s phone or computer.

The SeeHorseCloud application also allows owners to remotely check the figures away from the yard.

The technology has been created in Kitchener, Canada, by Peter Mankowski.

“SeeHorse provides multiple features so you can stay connected with your horse,” Mr Mankowski told H&H.

“It is a 100% green energy device — if your horse is active, it recharges the device just by their movement.”

Mr Mankowski explained why he wanted to launch SeeHorse.

“All of us at work either actively ride or show horses or have had horses in the past,” he said. “It felt natural to design the Seehorse for ourselves and others from the industry.

“In North America people board they horses away from home and only see them one or two times a week.

“Not knowing how your beloved horse is puts stress on most of us so we designed a device that lets you stay connected worldwide.

“In addition of seeing all data in real time, users can go back to a horse’s account and retrieve historical data as well.”

The design of SeeHorse began last month (June) and is close to completion.

“We need to pre-sell 500 units to complete the design,” added Mr Mankowski.

They are three products available with varying features. Prices start at C$145 (£72).

Horse riders with iPhones can now download an app that might help in an emergency situation.

The new Health app — which is only available on iOS 8 — allows users to put emergency health information on the lock screen of their phone.

The software allows riders to enter their full name, date of birth, medical conditions, allergies, medications, blood type and more, so that first aiders can immediately access the information.

If a casualty is found with the phone anyone will be able to tap the screen, without needing to enter a passcode, to pull up the full medical card.

The app is being supported by medical professionals.

“When giving first aid in an emergency, the priority is to provide immediate care and attend to any major injuries a person may be suffering from at that time,” said Clive James from St John Ambulance.

“However, where these details would prove vital is if someone has become suddenly ill from an underlying medical condition that the person treating them needs to be made aware of, or when the patient arrives in hospital to receive ongoing or long-term treatment.”

Horse owners also think that the new app could help to improve safety, particularly if riding out alone.

“I urge riders to consider using this app,” said one H&H reader. “It could make a real difference in bad situations.”

Spectators at Aachen CHIO this weekend (17-20 July) will be able to have their say thanks to an app which allows live judging.

The audience can choose between using the app in “expert mode” — which allows the user to mark each individual movement — or a simpler “standard mode.”

During the competition, fans can compare their marks with other “audience judges” in the stadium and, at the end, the overall rankings from the crowd will be shown.

“I can’t wait to see the audience judgment,” said German dressage coach Monica Theodorescu.

“The fans at Aachen are well known for their expertise, so this is really going to be exciting.

“I’m curious if the audience ranking will be the same as that of the judges.”

An app that lets you listen to training while you ride has launched a new download.

“Simple Steps to Long and Low” is the latest addition to iRide Training, and is designed to help riders work their horses in a long and low frame.

It is recorded by dressage trainer Alison Short, who discusses straightness, the rider’s posture and correct aiding.

“With stretching being incorporated into many of the British Dressage tests, we felt that it was important for riders of all levels to understand the physical development a horse needs to work long and low correctly,” said Alison.

A new equestrian app has been launched by Kal Designs Ltd to store all your horses’ essential information on.

“Horse Box” has been designed as a reference point for insurance and passport details, important contacts, appointments and photos.

“Like all equestrians we do everything to keep our horses from harms way,” said a spokesman for the app.

A new app to help locate riders who have fallen off and may be injured is now available.

The Rescue Me app has been launched by PRP Rescue Services, a company that provides equestrian breakdown assistance.

It uses smartphone global satellite positioning to find you.

“Whether you are riding alone or in a group, an accident requires immediate help,” said Jon Phillips from PRP.

“You just press the Rescue Me button and it sends your exact latitude and longitude to us – and we can pinpoint your location within six feet.”

The service alerts the PRP 24hr specialist equine call handlers who can contact the emergency services and vets and inform next of kin.

“It works anywhere in the country – including in the ‘wilds’ such as the middle of Dartmoor,” said Mr Phillips, who added that the app was created due to public demand.

Sheila Hardy from the British Horse Society said: “It’s a really good idea and one that I hope many riders will take advantage of, a lot of research has gone into making sure that it works properly.”

There are Blackberry, iPhone and Android versions of the app and it costs £15 a year.

A new app to help riders learn their dressage tests will be launched this December by Leeds-based brand Equinox-Apps.

‘BE Dressage Tests’ will give the entire set of British Eventing (BE) tests in an easy-to-read format for small screens.

The app, which doesn’t need an internet connection to work, will also allow riders to listen to their test whilst riding, either on their iPhone or iPod.

Yorkshire mums Barbara Gibbs and Jan Birley came up with the idea after getting fed up with their daughters losing paper tests at the last minute before a competition.

Ms Gibbs told H&H: “It’s about the availability of it -now you can learn your dressage test anytime, anywhere.”

It is the only app approved by BE and includes three new tests for the 2012 season.

A handy new app has been developed to help owners spot the signs of colic in horses — and to advise on what to do if a case is suspected.

The free app for smartphone users tells owners what to do when their horse is colicky. It advises how to carry out a basic physical exam and what the different signs and behaviours mean.

The app has been developed in conjunction with American vet and colic expert Dr Keith Taraba, who has been trained at one of America’s best-known colic centres.

The All England Jumping Course at Hickstead has become the latest competition venue to launch an “app” for mobile phones and tablets.

Available for the iPhone and iPad, the free app will provide information for spectators and competitors at the British Jumping Derby Meeting (23-26 June), as well as those hoping to keep up with the action from home.

It will also feature live updates and class results from the other two main Hickstead fixtures, as well as other useful details such as weather forecasts, interactive maps and directions.

Hickstead director Daisy Bunn believes the technology will help grooms and competitors plan their show day.

“The live updates will mean grooms and riders have to do less running around to different rings, checking on class timings,” she said.

Chris Orchard, who competes in scurry driving, has already downloaded the app. “The app is a useful way for competitors to make the most of their Hickstead experience, especially the option to upload your own photos to the app,” she said.

A number of equestrian venues have previously released apps to promote their events, including Badminton Horse Trials and Ascot Racecourse.

This autumn, Burghley Horse Trials (1-4 September) will have a new iPhone app, designed to provide the latest coverage of the four-star event at your fingertips.

The app will be free to download and will include regular news bulletins, a live scoreboard and podcasts, as well as ticket information and weather forecasts.

Long distance riders and happy hackers can take advantage of a new application available for the iPhone, showing real-time positioning on Ordnance Survey maps.

Featuring a trip computer and tracklogs recorder, Memory-Map’s free app enables user to purchase specific areas of Ordnance Survey mapping, with a choice of either Landranger (1:50,000) and Explorer (1:25,000).

Both scales show footpaths, bridleways and byways open to all traffic. The maps are held on the phone’s memory so users do not have to rely on mobile reception to see their maps.

A 25,000 km2 of 1:50,000 Landranger mapping costs £12.50 — that’s enough to download all of Wales.

For riders who already use Memory-Map on their computer, a paid-for app (£9.99) enables users to transfer their existing Memory-Map V5 PC maps to their iPhone.

Three weeks after launching its iPhone app for Equine Prohibited Substances, the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) has announced that the app is available on Android smartphones.

The mobile application gives quick, searchable, access to information on substances prohibited in competition.

More than 2,000 people have downloaded the free iPhone app since its launch at the start of November.

A version for Blackberry smartphones is expected at the end of the year.

A FEI spokesperson said: “It’s free because we want as many people as possible to have access to this useful information.”

The Android version is available on Android phones with a 2.2 (or later) operating system from the Google Android Market, at www.fei.org/media/smartphones-apps.

The iPhone app is available from the iTunes Store.

The app accesses the FEI equine prohibited substances database, which has been available on the FEI website since April.

When a searchable term is entered, a short definition of the substance appears, accompanied by its FEI classification and common trade names.

A feedback function with automatic email acknowledgement allows further advice and clarification.

The database will be updated to incorporate new substances. See www.fei.org

The British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) has created an iPhone application to enable the public to find BETA retailers and members, anywhere in the UK.

BETA says the “app” may be useful away from home or at a show when an urgent tack replacement or service is needed.

The free download allows users to input their postcode or position and be linked to websites and contact details for stores or services like saddle fitting, bitting or advice on worming.

“The application is a tremendous way of further promoting BETA retail members, a great help to the consumer and an addition to member benefits,” said BETA executive director Claire Williams.
