Carole Lindsay celebrated as home-bred Maybe A Reign Star led a remarkable one-two in the British Miniature Horse Society (BMHS) supreme miniature horse championship at the 2026 Agria Royal International Horse Show (RIHS).

A surprise champion, Maybe A Reign Star – by Poco De Oro Maybe Reigns out of Scott's Little Star – qualified for the championship after topping the BMHS yearling miniature horse line-up.

He’s usually led by Daniel Tarpey, but as Daniel had also qualified Carole’s stallion who stood reserve, the rein was handed over to Mia Hiscock and the youngster edged out his stablemate despite having only contested a handful of shows.

“I‘m absolutely over the moon, especially with him because he‘s only done a couple of shows,” said Carole. “I actually thought my stallion would be the one to do well, but I had no expectations for the yearling.

“He qualified at his first show in April – the Breed Show. Both his sire and dam qualified for Royal International, but neither of them ever went champion, so this is really special.

“It was so unexpected. I don‘t even know what the plans are now, but I suppose we‘d better start thinking about Horse of the Year Show qualifiers.”

Reserve supreme went to Carole‘s prolific stallion H Red Hunter Brown (Toby), the five-year-old 84cm stallion by HT Amaze Mi On The Highway out of SDZ Take Five Chanel, who qualified after winning the BMHS three-year-old and over miniature horse championship.

Toby arrived at Hickstead in outstanding form following a string of major victories.

“He‘s had a fantastic career,” said Carole. “He was champion at Three Counties, reserve at Devon and supreme at the Shire Horse Show last week.

“If any of mine had taken the top spot, I thought it would have been Toby, which is why this has come as such a shock. To have bred, owned and exhibited both the champion and reserve supreme here is just incredible.”

I’ve collated your need-to-know information for the 2026 HOYS miniature qualifiers to help fulfil your dreams of qualifying your miniature horse for Horse of the Year Show (HOYS). Finding out who’s judging which fixture takes a lot of time and effort, so this should make planning your season much easier.

While all the HOYS qualifiers have been announced for 2026, many of the hosts have not revealed their judges yet, so I’m frequently updating this page with all the new details as they are released.

Miniature horse stalwart Charlotte Leonard and her own Scotts Olympic Dream claimed the 2025 miniature horse of the year championship at Horse of the Year Show (HOYS).

Four-year-old stallion Dream was bred by Carole Lindsey, by Scott Creek Monarch Sumkinda Wiz and out of Tazaeos Unos Olympic Dream.

This was not Dream’s first success at HOYS; he won the miniature horse final here last year, and he was 2024 reserve supreme miniature horse at the Royal International Horse Show (RIHS).

“To win here two years in a row is just unbelievable,” said Charlotte, who has owned Dream since he was a two-year-old. “He just loves it in the ring.”

Charlotte – a winner here in 2022 handling Amblynn Tiramisu – is six months pregnant with her second baby, and Charlotte explained that the week has been something of a challenge. She only came out of hospital four days ago but wasn’t about to let that stop her showing.

“I’ve been quite poorly and was in hospital until Wednesday, but I was determined to be here. Just to get here was amazing, but I first showed miniature horses here 20 years ago so I had to do it.”

2025 Miniature Horse of the year reserve

Dream’s breeder owns the reserve champion, Royal Supreme H Red Hunter (Toby), another four-year-old stallion. At 84cm tall, Toby was bred by Nathalie Poels, and is by H T Amaze Mi On The Highway out of SDZ Take Five Chanel.

Toby was handled here by Mia Hiscock, who explained that this is Toby’s third visit here, and he’s been placed every year. Toby was also recently supreme at the British Miniature Horse Society show, won three HOYS qualifiers this summer and already has his ticket to the 2026 RIHS.

“He’s cheeky,” said Mia, “But he also loves a cuddle and loves showing.”

A tiny Texan import wowed to stand Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) American miniature horse champion in the inaugural running of this championship, sponsored by Pandoras Miniature Farm.

The class provided a glitzy change for onlookers from the usual showing attire, as several exhibitors donned colour and sequins to show.

DVM Trouly Its Ok To Stare, an 83cm tall American miniature horse owned by Carol Cooper and Tolga Falahat, was imported after his owners fell in love with his dam Pecan Grove Black Velvet when visiting the World American Miniature Horse Show in Texas.

Her handler that day, Mike Hlavatovic, told Carol and Tolga about the now three-year-old. They decided to visit Mike’s Texan base to view the colt, and the rest is history.

He is by DVM Unique Troubadour, and was bred by Nicole and Richard Pearsall.

Mike made the journey to the UK five days ago especially to show here for the first time.

“I’d never been to this show before. I’d heard about it, but it’s much bigger than I expected; it’s been a real eye-opener for me,” he said.

It is the friendship with Mike that has inspired and sustained Tolga’s interest in horses, let alone the breed.

“I’ve always had horses,” said Carol, “Including a HOYS winner, but Tolga met Mike, they struck it off – they’re the best of friends – and it inspired him.”

Tolga also fielded the third-placed Minstrels Rebels Hells Angels and fourth-placed SHM Westernboys Red Roses. But splitting his line-up was runner-up Hattie Miller with her own Covergirls Idols Journey.

A glittering career came to a close in style for Model Farm UK Midnight Meadow, as she claimed her third British Miniature Horse Society (BMHS) Supreme Miniature Horse Championship title at the Agria Royal International Horse Show.

Owned and exhibited by Harriet Miller, the eight-year-old by CDM Blaze of Glory out of Mountain Meadow Sweet Dreams won the same title in 2021 and 2024.

Harriet said this will be the diminutive mare’s final appearance in the show ring and she will now retire to Somerset to have her foal by Royal Supreme H Blue Moon.

“This is the third time she’s won this championship,” said Harriet. “She’s actually done very little showing overall and this is her last show. She retires today, so she’s going out with style.”

A consistent and celebrated mare, she has won her mare class here four times and has also stood champion at Horse of the Year Show (HOYS).

“She’s a once-in-a-lifetime mare,” added Harriet. “To see her win this on her final outing is really emotional – and exciting to think about what’s next for her as a broodmare.”

Reserve champion was awarded to Model Farm UK Oh Whatta Man (Haribo), a striking two-year-old chestnut colt by Rosemont Majestic Blazing Thunder out of Model Farm UK Scouts Masquerade. He is owned and exhibited by Sylvia Hook.

Haribo’s comeback this year has been nothing short of remarkable.

“He qualified last year but was so poorly he didn’t show in the later part of the year at all,” said Sylvia. “This year he’s only been to two shows; a qualifier for Royal International and a qualifier for Horse of the Year Show so to see him in the ring like this is just marvellous.”

Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) has added a new showing class for American Miniature Horses – the UKAMHS American Miniature Horse of the Year — to its 2025 schedule, in addition to the established Miniature Horse of the Year class at the show. The class will include commentary to help spectators learn more about the breed.

But before you rush to Google “American Miniature horses for sale near me,” grab your notebook as Emma Williams, from Pandoras Miniature Farm, guides us through the do’s and don’ts of buying and showing this breed…

Is the American Miniature Horse for you?

“American Miniature Horses are suitable for anyone,” says Emma, “they can be ideal for children or adults.

“Many owners discover this breed after retiring from showing or riding larger horses, but still have the passion for keeping horses. Miniature horses can be easier to care for than full-sized horses due to their smaller size, and while they still require acreage to graze and roam, they don’t need as as much as their larger counterparts.”

Accessibility is also a key factor in the breed’s appeal.

“They are easy to work with,” adds Emma, “making it possible for people with injuries or disabilities to enjoy showing; a miniature can truly open the door for anyone who wants to give it a shot!”

As well as their physical attributes, Emma explains that the American Miniature Horses have such an inquisitive nature.

“They’re incredibly friendly and love to engage with people, they’re social animals which is what makes them so good as therapy horses.”

Which American Miniature Horses are suitable for showing?

First and foremost, Emma would encourage anyone looking to buy an American Miniature Horse for the show ring to refer to the American Miniature Horse breed standard, and try to find a horse that meets its criteria.

In a nutshell, you are looking for a horse that is “conformationally correct and moves well,” Emma explains, adding that “an American Miniature Horse is a beautiful, small, well-balanced horse that, if size were not a factor, would possess the same conformational proportions of other full sized light breeds.

“In terms of breed type, the American Miniature horse is generally a scaled down version of the lighter show horse category, such an Arabian horse or hack; you’re not looking for a scaled down heavyweight hunter or cob.

“There is also a slightly heavier category for American Miniatures called the stock division. This category features horses that resemble scaled-down quarter horses. These horses are well muscled making them perfectly suited for various purposes, including driving and performance classes, showcasing their impressive skills and versatility.

“It is important to note that, regardless of type, each horse will be judged on its own merit. Any colour or coat pattern is acceptable for showing, as are blue eyes.

“If you want to access the new HOYS qualifiers, then your American Miniature Horse must stand 34 inches or less, and meet the eligibility requirements set out by the UK American Miniature Horse Society (UKAMHS). Additionally, the horse must be nominated for the show year, and you can find out more on the society’s website.”

How much should you expect to pay for an American Miniature Horse?

“Cost can vary,” says Emma. Like any show horse, factors such as breeding and previous performance can impact their price tag. It also depends where you are sourcing your horse. If you decide to import an American-bred horse, you will need to consider the import costs and taxes.

“Generally though, you’re looking to spend anything between £4,000 and £15,000 for a show horse. But of course, you might get lucky and find one for less.”

Where can you buy one?

“To find a show horse, I would suggest reaching out to the American Miniature Horse breed shows or the UK Studbook (AMHCGB) for recommendations of reputable breeders and go from there,” says Emma.

“We always recommend having horses vetted. This not only helps identify potential health issues or conformational faults but may be a requirement for your insurance company.

“Additionally, before you buy, we advise verifying the horse’s registration with the American Studbook to ensure that the horse is a purebred and has been registered correctly prior to agreeing to the purchase.”

What do you need to look the part in the show ring?

An American Miniature Horse should be shown in a simple halter similar to those used for Arabian horses, with a standard chain and leather lead as used for all in-hand showing. In stock type classes, the horses wear stock halters that resemble scaled-down versions of those used for showing Quarter Horses.

Emma adds: “American Miniature Horses are usually shown freshly clipped, as a clipped appearance tends to highlight their features, but you won’t be penalised if your horse has a full coat. Bridle paths are clipped back so that you can show off definition through the neck, although the key is that the clip needs to suit the horse. As with any show horse, you want to enhance the good bits. Tails are generally left natural, but we’d recommend that it’s not so long that the horse can stand on it.”

And what about the handler’s attire?

“The handler needs to be smartly turned out in a jacket or long sleeved shirt and smart trousers,” explains Emma, but before you reach for your tweed, American Miniatures tend to be shown with handlers in a variety of colours, depending on the colour of the horse and the handler’s personal preference.

“Many opt for a western look, featuring western shirts or jackets. Many of the jackets have embellishments and can be quite sparkly,” says Emma, adding, “cowboy hats are also allowed, though hats aren’t mandatory unless you are showing in a stock class, where you must wear a western hat, a long sleeved shirt or jacket, and western footwear. Gloves are not a requirement, and canes are not allowed.”

If, like us, tying a tie leaves knots in your stomach, don’t worry. Emma explains: “Handlers don’t typically wear traditional ties; men may choose to wear one with a jacket, but many opt for a western bolo tie instead. As for women, they typically don’t wear ties, but again, it’s down to the handler’s preference. You really have a wonderful selection of choices when it comes to what to wear.”

A three-year-old colt provided his owner and handler with a second Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) win of her career as he flicked his toes to the head of the 2024 HOYS miniature horse of the year championship.

Charlotte Leonard led out her own Scotts Olympic Dream to lead a strong field of the best miniature horses in the country. Dream was bred by Carol Lindsey by Scott Creek Monarch Sumkinda. Charlotte has bought several horses from Carol over the years.

The three-year-old colt, reserve supreme at the Royal International Horse Show back in July after winning his class for the second time, was bought by Charlotte, who works full-time as a senior nurse in the NHS, as a foal.

“He was so chilled but he absolutely loved it in that ring today,” said Charlotte, who also shows ridden ponies at top level. “When I first saw him as a foal in the field I just loved him, especially his head and front. I thought he could be very special one day.”

At HOYS last term, Dream finished fourth in this final. Charlotte last won here in 2022 handling Amblynn Tiramisu.

“When I last won here it was just after my dad died; I know he was looking down and watching over us today,” Charlotte said. “This is another dream. We’ve tried to win it for years.”

A show-stopping miniature mare strutted her stuff on day five of the Agria Royal International Horse Show (RIHS) to win the 2024 RIHS BMHS miniature horse championship for the second time in her career.

In 2021, the now seven-year-old Model Farm UK Midnight Meadow (Bexs) did the dream double when she won both miniature championships at the RIHS and at Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) later on in the season.

Her owner, Harriet Miller, has produced and handled her since she was a two-year-old.

“She’s a show girl through and through,” said Harriet. “She loves to show herself off to the best of her ability. Even at home she thinks she’s the top dog. She is a fantastic mare; she’ll never be replaced.”

Bex has been shown three times so far in 2024, and she has enjoyed three wins. She booked her trip to HOYS at Derbyshire Festival in June to vie for the return of her 2021 crown.

“I absolutely love showing her,” said Harriet. “She’s the easiest horse in the world, once you know her. She has been tricky in the past, but I know her so well now.”

Harriet works for a waste management company and fits a team of seven horses — that she co-owns with Sylvia Hook — around full-time work.

“I’ve ridden since I was two years old and since getting into the miniatures, I’ve never looked back,” Harriet added.

Any breed of horse that measures 14.2hh or under is considered a pony, but it’s those smaller than 11hh that can be considered some of the smallest horses in the world. Some of the smaller individuals of these pony breeds can measure under 1m.

Smallest horses in the world: record breakers

Did you know the smallest living male horse is shorter than a greyhound? At 56.7cm or 22.36 inches high Bombel, a nine-year-old miniature Appaloosa who lives in Poland, currently holds the record having been certified by The Guinness World Records for the smallest living male horse in 2018.

Bombel, which means bubble in English, resides at KasKada stud farm in Lodz. He spends his days in his stable and out in the field with his friends and once a month he undertakes voluntary work visiting a local children’s hospital.

There is no current record holder for the title of smallest but the shortest female horse on record was Thumbelina, a miniature brown mare who was even smaller than Bombel, measuring 44.5cm or 17.5 inches. Thumbelina lived in St Louis, Missouri, USA and passed away in 2018 at the age of 17.

While Bombel and Thumbelina are obviously extreme in size, which is affected by them both having dwarfism, there are several breeds which are naturally small or ‘miniature’.

Miniature horse breeds include the Falabella, which originates from Argentina and are less than 8hh (81cm or 32inches tall). Falabellas have just 16 or 17 vertebrae compared to a horse’s normal 18 and they have at least one less pair of ribs. Despite being so tiny, they have the same size heart as larger horses and their expected lifespan is 40-45 years.

Falabellas exist in a range of colours and are renowned for their thick, silky manes and tails. They are popular as therapy or companion animals due to their slim stature and gentle nature.

Smallest horses in other parts of the world

Other miniature horse breeds include the British Miniature (up to 87cm or 34 inches in height), the Dutch Miniature (a maximum of 91cm or 36 inches in height), the South African Miniature (stands at less than 95cm or 37 inches in height) and the American Miniature (no taller than 86cm or 34 inches). All of these have been selectively bred and therefore they have the same conformational proportions as bigger breeds.

While not classed as a miniature horse, the Shetland pony is certainly a small breed. Hailing from the Scottish Island of Shetland, these hardy ponies, which are less than 10.5hh (110cm), have existed for over 2000 years and were originally used to cultivate the land, as a form of transport and in the pits and mines.

Nowadays, Shetland ponies have an easier life and are primarily used as children’s riding ponies or for carriage driving. For their size they are the strongest of all horse breeds and their docile nature makes them a perfect mount for a child.

Another popular small breed of pony in the UK is the Welsh Pony, the smallest of which is the Welsh Mountain or Welsh section A which does not exceed 12hh (122cm). Welsh section B and section C ponies are slightly taller at between 12hh and 13hh while Welsh section D ponies are over 13.2hh.

It is believed that Welsh Mountain ponies have existed since prehistoric times and are descendants of the Celtic pony. Similarly to Shetlands, they have been used by farmers to cultivate the land and as pit ponies. Today they are predominantly used for children to learn to ride and are popular in the show ring in lead rein and first ridden classes.

Welsh Mountains are kind and gentle but tough and sturdy, they are well suited to life in the Welsh mountains and can be any colour except piebald and skewbald.

Japan has two breeds of small horses – the Noma and the Yonaguni, both of which are critically endangered species. The Noma is the smallest of the eight native breeds of Japan and stands at around 10.2hh (107cm) tall.

Noma originated from Mongolia so are hardy and strong and agile on mountain terrain. They were originally used in warfare and to work on farmland but today they are ridden by children and are a tourist attraction as the last known figures suggest less than 100 are in existence.

Yonaguni is native to Yonaguni, the westernmost island of Japan, and most of the population live semi-wild there. They were originally used to carry rice and sugarcane around the island and are well known for being strong and calm. They are typically chestnut in colour and 11.2-11.3hh (117-129 cm) in height.

China’s smallest breed of horse is called Guoxia, which when translated means “under fruit tree horse” and is a nod to their original use which was to hold the fruit baskets under the trees during harvest. Guoxia, which are also an endangered breed, are typically 9-10hh (91-102cm) tall and like the aforementioned breeds are tough and sturdy with gentle characters.

Young miniature horse enthusiast Tilly Norris is proving to children who don’t want to ride that a special connection with a horse can be achieved out of the saddle.

Tilly, 10, has been showing miniature horses since she was just seven years old. This year, she made her debut at the Royal International Horse Show (RIHS) leading her five-year-old mare Model Farm UK Pretty Little Miss (Saffy). She was the youngest handler in the class by six years.

Tilly’s mother, Vicky Norris, has been breeding miniatures for the past four years. Vicky won at last year’s RIHS final handling her own stallion, Kitana Knights Royal Reflection.

“Tilly is brilliant with the horses and the bond they have with her seems very special,” explains Vicky, who first showed miniatures some 20 years ago and now breeds her own under the Temptation prefix. “Saffy is better behaved for Tilly than she is for me!”

Like most children born into equestrian families, Tilly began riding ponies on the lead rein as soon as she could walk.

“She did all sorts on the rein, but when it was time for her to come off she just didn’t want to do it,” Vicky explains. “She didn’t have the confidence to ride in front of anyone and riding just wasn’t for her. However, she still loved horses and loved the idea of showing. So, we started her with some in-handers and it went from there.

“It’s often assumed that riding is the only avenue for children to explore, but there are many ways to enjoy horses out of the saddle. Some children feel that they have to ride if their parents want them to, but there are other things to do.”

Tilly has an Instagram page run by Vicky and she has amassed over 12,000 followers. She is also sponsored by children’s toy company Crafty Ponies and she travels across the country performing in displays with the brand.

Tilly has also been incredibly successful in young handler classes, and she recently finished reserve champion in a 27-strong young handler field at Royal Cheshire County.

“We’ve had parents come up to us and say that their children similarly don’t enjoy riding, but they hadn’t even thought about in-hand showing,” Vicky continues. “Miniatures are a great breed to get into. They’re not as strong as Shetlands and they are completely different temperament wise. They seem to bond really well with children – perhaps as they don’t feel as intimidated by their size. Plus, there are a lot of breed clubs for children to get involved with.

“Saffy is also in the process of being broken to drive; Tilly has a black and pink cart which she is so excited about.

“Tilly is so keen and she’s always out practising. To get to the RIHS was a major achievement for her.”

One of the newest recruits to the police in Ocala, Florida, has 13 years of experience in law enforcement and disaster response, and a string of awards and accolades to her name.

Officer Magic is 15, and 27” (6.3hh) tall. She comes from Gentle Carousel Miniature Therapy Horses, and is the first miniature horse to be sworn in as an honorary police officer for the US city.

“Welcome, Officer Magic!” an Ocala Police Department (PD) spokesman said, explaining that Gentle Carousel is one of the largest equine therapy programmes in the world, visiting thousands of people every year.

“We’re happy to announce this new partnership between Gentle Carousel and our police agency. Officer Magic will occasionally work on some of our outreach programs, including our Polar Patrol ice cream program, and our READ. literacy program.”

Ocala PD chief Mike Balken said Magic will help “spread goodwill and build relationships” between the force and its community.

“With her friendly personality and adorable appearance, Magic is sure to be a hit with everyone she meets,” he said.

A Gentle Carousel spokesman told H&H Magic was one of the team who went to comfort survivors after the mass shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Connecticut, in 2012, and the Pulse nightclub in Florida in 2016.

“She helped the tornado survivors of Moore, Oklahoma, victims of the fires in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, families in the aftermath of multiple hurricanes, families and first responders after the condo collapse in Surfside, Florida, and has visited thousands of patients in children’s and veterans’ hospitals across the country,” the spokesman said.

“Working indoors would be a challenge for any horse but Magic makes it look easy, even in high-rise buildings. She walks up and down steps, rides in elevators, walks on unusual floor surfaces, carefully moves around hospital and television studio equipment, works in small patient rooms and stays calm around unexpected sounds like ambulances, alarms and helicopters… and yes she is house-trained.

“Magic has visited Congress in Washington, DC, Arlington National Cemetery and the 911 Memorial in New York City. She helped teach a class at Columbia Medical School,and has been on the concert stage in Nashville, Tennessee.

“Magic is a member of Gentle Carousel Miniature Therapy Horses, an award-winning non-profit charity celebrating 25 years of service in 2022. Teams of tiny horses bring love to thousands of adults and children each year inside hospitals, hospice programs, assisted living programs, and with families, veterans and first responders who have experienced traumatic events.”

Some of Magic’s many accolades include being named one of history’s 10 most courageous animals by Time Magazine, a York distinguished service award, an American Red Cross outstanding service award and inclusion in the US Equestrian/Equus Foundation hall of fame. She is also a Breyer portrait model horse.

A young gelding triumphed on his first appearance at the Royal International Horse Show (RIHS) in the British Miniature Horse Society RIHS miniature horse supreme championship.

The showman in question was Rosaphia Royal Secret (Roy), a four-year-old by Ujeniks Extasy Dark out of Redstone Bint Royale.

The miniature classes were held during the morning in the Roger Stack Arena on day five of the show, with the championship contenders gracing the Longines International Arena.

Roy was bred by Samantha Wheatley and was shown to RIHS glory by Neville Stamford, who was also performing on Hickstead turf for the very first time.

Neville has only been involved with miniature horses for three years.

“This is our biggest win to date,” said a shocked Neville. “Roy is a true showman. He’s excited when he first comes out but as soon as he calms down he settles into the job. He is a great pony to have at home. This result is just unbelievable.”

Roy is also heading to Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) later in the year after taking champion at Stoneleigh Horse Show in May. He was also a winner at Hertfordshire County this year.

Reserve for the RIHS miniature horse supreme championship title went to Neville’s team mate Freddie Watts, who was handling his own home-bred two-year-old Windrush Trademark.

Freddie and Neville are good friends and Freddie is the owner of Roy’s sire, Ujeniks Extasy Dark, a successful show horse and former RIHS finalist himself.

A miniature horse owner whose horse was stabbed in a random violent attack is heading to the Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) at the NEC with her other beloved horse, two years on from the case being tried at crown court.

Harriet Wood has qualified for the miniature horse of the year final with her own Summerrose Little Hawk (Jasper).

Harriet’s first ever miniature horse, Sol, was bought in 2016 and Jasper was purchased soon after, becoming a multi-breed and county show supreme champion.

In April 2018, Harriet found Sol in his stable covered in blood after man had broken into this stable and stabbed him 16 times.

“I was beyond heartbroken,” Harriet says. “It really was touch and go, but against all the odds, he survived.

“I felt like my dreams of competing at HOYS were probably over, but my family encouraged me to take Jasper to the The British Miniature Horse Society (BMHS) star seeker final where he won his hardshipping rights, passing with 100%.

“I started to show him with BMHS and the following year Jasper qualified for HOYS.”

However, Harriet’s first trip to HOYS in 2019 was clouded by the fact that Sol’s crown court trial took place on the day of the miniature horse final.

She continues: “I spent the morning in court, and had phone calls from the police right up until my class. It was heartbreaking that this crime had taken so much from me and was also taking my HOYS experience. Although HOYS was amazing, it was very hard to keep my mind off Sol and it made the day very difficult.

“Sol’s case came to an end over winter and during lockdown, I concentrated on Jasper, with the aim of having my day at HOYS with nothing to distract me. We have worked as a team and this year Jasper has exceeded our expectations and was crowned gelding champion and overall reserve supreme at the Royal International, and qualified for HOYS again.

“This year’s show will be very special as I will be able to enjoy being there with Jasper who will also be showing for Sol as well as my cousin, Mel, who sadly passed away from Covid earlier this year. She was one of my biggest supporters. We talked a lot about my goals for Jasper. I’m so excited to be at the world’s best horse show with the world’s best horse. Jasper is truly the horse of a lifetime.”

Tributes have been paid to the prolific miniature horse stallion and Horse of the Year Show champion Farthingwood Romeo who has died aged 23.

The son of Sabre of Chetwynd, out of Grimpowood Charlotte Louise, was put down after developing colic on 29 August.

Sarah and Peter Howard of Snowbella Miniatures and SBM Arabians bought Farthingwood Romeo from his breeder Amanda Woof at the International Miniature Horse & Pony Society annual show auction in 1998, where he was named best foal.

Sarah told H&H it was as if Romeo “was made for them”.

“He did not have an easy start and was very unwell that autumn when he developed intestinal problems and was given only a five percent chance of survival, but he was a fighter,” she said.

“We did not really know whether he would become a show horse but we hoped so. We knew his movement and conformation were second to none and we sent him to pony producer Richard North. From then on he was very ably produced and handled throughout his showing career by Sam and Julian Quiney with Sam’s mother Di providing welcome support.”

In 1999 Romeo won his yearling class at the Royal Windsor Horse Show and stood reserve champion. The same year he took several titles including supreme at the All Miniatures Breed Show in Doncaster, and junior champion, grand champion and international reserve supreme of champion of champions at the British Miniature Horse Society (BMHS) breed and international show.

The following year Romeo became the first ever miniature horse champion at the Horse of the Year Show at Wembley.

“We shall never forget how small, confident and magnificent he looked as he participated in the grand parade of champions on the Sunday evening, alongside all the other in-hand and ridden champions and with the drum horse of the Kings Troop towering above,” said Sarah, who added Romeo took three further championships and two reserve titles that year.

In 2001 Romeo bettered his 1999 result at the BMHS breed and international show, when he took international supreme champion of champions. That year he was also a HOYS finalist. In 2002 he stood champion at the Kent County show, and his first offspring, a skewbald colt, was born who went on to qualify for HOYS in 2003.

“We rarely showed after 2002 when we took our miniatures to France where we have a property,” said Sarah, who returned to the UK in 2010 to form SBM Arabians.

“Romeo enjoyed an honourable retirement with us. He had a very determined but lovable personality. In the show ring if he was not initially pulled in at the top of the line he would look around as if to say ‘What am I doing here?’. He will be greatly missed by us and by the many people who knew him.”

A four-year-old making her Royal International Horse Show debut trotted away with the British Miniature Horse Society (BMHS) supreme miniature horse championship.

The bay pinto mare — who lit up during her performance in the Longines International Arena — was Model Farm UK Midnight Meadow, handled to perfection by her producer Harriet Miller, for breeder Lisa Taylor.

Midnight Meadow finished her 2019 season with a third at the Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) and seemed to thoroughly enjoy her chance to stand in the spotlight here at Hickstead.

“We’ve had a phenomenal season; she’s been champion or reserve every time out this year,” said miniature specialist Harriet, who works for the Environment Agency and is a regular face at Hickstead.

Harriet has produced miniatures since 2014 and has had CMD Blaze Of Glory-sired Midnight Meadow on her team for two seasons.

“She’s a bit fresh and she’s super chatty today, “ said Somerset-based Harriet, who led her to be champion at both BMHS and breed shows as well as NPS Area 13. “She’s full of herself, has a serious attitude and she thinks she’s quite important. She’s only four so she’ll continue showing her for a few years. She seems to love her job.”

“I have a full team of miniatures for Lisa; today, we also won with our two-year-old Model Farm UK Eliana.”

Both mares are off to HOYS this year.

Taking reserve was Harriet Wood leading her own eight-year-old gelding Summerrose Little Hawk.

A miniature horse who made an incredible recovery from multiple stab wounds has appeared as a Christmas gift in a stunning photoshoot.

Budding photographer Florence Wood was inspired to capture her family’s miniature horses for a project for her HND photography course.

She was given the theme “The Beautiful and the Bizarre” by her tutors, and decided to snap the “beautiful” horses in some unusual situations.

Apollo’s Sol Invictus, who was stabbed 16 times in a random attack in April 2018, appears with his owner Harriet, who is Florence’s sister.

He is seen in his full winter coat, dressed as a Christmas present with a sack full of hay.

“People have been so supportive over Sol and the way we think about it is that we are very lucky still to have him,” said Florence and Harriet’s mother Lesley.

“Florence wanted to capture the ponies doing something they wouldn’t usually be doing, so she thought it would be nice to have Sol dressed up for Christmas at this time of year.

“Sol didn’t mind at all, he is very easy. He spends half his life dressed up as a unicorn anyway as he has a unicorn onesie!” she added.

After making a final appearance at the Royal International, which he had qualified for before the attack, Sol retired from showing because of his scars, but although he is currently in his winter fluff, Lesley said he would return to the ring next year.

“Although he won’t be doing top class showing any more, we can still have fun showing him in performance classes and we might try introducing him to driving,” she said.

The pictures also feature purebred Falabella Micatos Edwardos Rainbow (Eddie), who belongs to Florence. He poses in the lounge reading a magazine with Lesley.

Florence has previously broken 16-year-old Eddie to drive, as well as showing him, and this year they have been contesting SSADL (veterans) classes and have qualified for the championship final at Olympia.

“Florence is autistic and used to ride Shetlands, but when she outgrew them and went on to large breeds, she didn’t like the noise they made,” Lesley explained.

“She said she wanted a miniature and we bought Eddie just as a pet, but within six to eight weeks she had qualified him for Horse of the Year Show (HOYS).

“Don’t ever mess with an autistic kid as they will prove you wrong!” Lesley added. “She said she wanted to do SSADL and we said he’d never compete with the plaited horses, but told her if she filled in the forms we would take her. He went champion in the first round and qualified so easily.

“We’re very excited for next week now, it’s one big show we’ve never done before, so it’s a dream come true to have got him to Olympia.”

Lesley added that while Florence’s tutors had loved the project, and thought it was very unusual, it wasn’t in fact all that uncommon for Eddie to make an appearance in her lounge.

“As you can tell, he is quite used to it!” she said.

A miniature breeder whose horse survived a violent stabbing attack is set to return to the Royal International Horse Show (HOYS) to try and better the second place she achieved with her miracle horse.

Harriet Wood will be contending the final with her new miniature star, Jasper (Summerrose Little Hawk).

Harriet described how the heartbreaking attack left her horse Sol’s future in jeopardy and she believed that he would never show again, despite miraculously surviving the ordeal, when a man broke into his stable and stabbed him.

“I got Sol in 2016 from breeder Wendy Edgar,” says Harriet. “Wendy is the breeder of my sister’s HOYS champion, Apollo’s Secret Agent, and she offered me Agent’s half-brother, Sol.”

Harriet’s family have shown miniatures for nearly a decade, but the up and coming handler didn’t get into the scene until she got Sol.

“He was successful from the start,” continues Harriet. “In our first year together (2017) we qualified for the RIHS and came second in the final.

“I was incredibly excited about the possibility of taking him back for a second year with more experience. I was over the moon when he qualified and took champion at the first qualifier of 2018.

“After his qualifying championship I was on such a high. However, last April this all came crashing down when I found Sol covered in blood in his stable after a man had broken into his stable and stabbed him.”

Sol had been stabbed 16 times; 12 on his rear and four times in his jugular. Harriet spent the next few weeks sleeping in his stable and washing his wounds with saline to prevent infection. Against the odds, Sol survived but Harriet was convinced his showing days were over.

Charlotte continues: “After a huge amount of encouragement from my family and the horse community, I persevered with Sol who still went to RIHS last year and again placed second even with 16 scars. I was happy to end his RIHS journey there.”

Charlotte explains: “Before Sol’s attack I bought American miniature Jasper from Yvonne McAlister in Ireland.

“After what I’d gone through with Sol my family encouraged me to take Jasper to the The British Miniature Horse Society (BMHS) Star Seeker final. This is a championship where non-BMHS miniatures can compete to win society hardshipping rights. He passed with 100% and won his rights.

“Jasper was now BMHS eligible for the 2019 season and at his first show he qualified for the RIHS, later going on to win his HOYS ticket at his first ever county show.

“Jasper has been by rock over the last year. RIHS has always been my special show where Sol made an amateurs dreams come true, taking me into the championship and standing in the top two. I cannot wait to take Jasper for his first ever Hickstead appearance and fly the flag for Sol.”

A video of a miniature horse showing off his dressage moves has taken the internet by storm, amassing 1.5m views.

Izzy, a five-year-old registered Dutch miniature horse “with attitude”, was caught on camera trotting alongside an arena in which a dressage horse was being worked — showing some impressive elevation.

Owner Margot Thomas, from Doorwerth in the Netherlands, told H&H: “I bought Izzy to keep my dressage stallion Eston company. Eston is a 16.2hh Dutch warmblood and Izzy is only 33.5 inches but still has attitude. His full name is Izzy Grey of Saman Stables because of his silver dapple colour.

“Eston wasn’t very sure of him at first but they now get along very well. Most people keep their stallions alone but I wanted Eston to have a friend, Eston is a softie and Izzy is the bossy one. On the day of the video my friend was training her dressage horse Vanquish and Izzy started having fun wanting to join in and show off. He did this about five times. ”

Margot, who has owned Izzy for a month, plans to train him in liberty work.

The main objective when breeding a miniature horse is to produce a tiny but proportionate horse. Registration as a British miniature horse requires a height of 87cm (8.2hh) or below at four years of age, so they’re certainly small — but are they always perfectly formed?

Owners should be aware that these diminutive equines can develop the same health conditions as larger breeds. Some conditions are more prevalent in miniatures, however, and often more problematic than in other horses.

With an average life expectancy of 30 to 40 years, a miniature can have a long and useful career in showing or driving, or as a companion animal. The key is to understand his unique physiology and adapt his care accordingly.

Potential problems

Miniatures have a degree of insulin insensitivity, which leads to poorer control of sugar and fat metabolism. This leaves them at greater risk of developing hyperlipaemia, a condition caused by a negative energy balance in the body. The resulting disturbance in the body’s fat metabolism leads to a build-up of triglycerides (fat products) in the blood.

In primary hyperlipaemia, this negative energy balance can be due to the increased demands of pregnancy and lactation, or by feed restriction — or even triggered by abnormal stress, such as losing a companion.

Secondary hyperlipaemia occurs as a consequence of anorexia, due to underlying disease that causes appetite loss.

Early detection of subtle clinical signs, which include lack of appetite, dullness and depression, can improve the prognosis. Even with intensive care, however, survival chances can be as low as 50%.

Prevention of hyperlipaemia is based on providing miniatures with appropriate nutrition all year round, paying special attention to pregnant and lactating mares or horses thought to require a restricted diet.

Dental care goes hand-in-hand with good diet. Overcrowding of cheek and incisor teeth is a major problem. This predominantly manifests itself between three and five years of age, due to the disproportionately small head and mouth compared to the size of the teeth at the time of eruption. Regular routine dental checks are, therefore, important from an early age.

Overcrowding of teeth can lead to tooth root problems, food impaction, gum disease and sometimes sinusitis. Early signs of potential problems in young animals are large, persistent and painful eruption bumps.

These hard swellings appear along the lower edge of the jaw, underneath the lower cheek teeth, and on the side of the face just above where the upper teeth would be. Offending teeth may need to be removed.

While miniatures are reported to be no more susceptible to colic than larger breeds, the type of colic they tend to develop is often different. Around 60% of cases are due to impaction and rock-hard faecal balls known as faecoliths.

This is thought to be related to the high incidence of dental problems and a relatively narrow portion of the intestines called the lumen.

Miniatures are inherently stoic, so early recognition of colic can be difficult. Rectal examination, an important diagnostic technique, is usually not possible due to size restraints, although ultrasound and radiographic examinations of the abdomen are relatively easier than in larger breeds.

Delayed diagnosis of faecoliths can be life-threatening, due to gut wall erosion and even rupture.

Exploratory laparotomy involving an incision in the abdomen wall may be required.

Current research seeks to determine how the diet and management of miniatures can be modified to minimise the occurrence of faecoliths and also enteroliths — accumulations of salts and minerals in the intestines.

Physical issues

Miniatures appear to be prone to primary osteoarthritis of the scapulohumeral (shoulder) joint, which may be associated with flattening of both the head of the humerus and the shallow depression it sits in.

Lameness typically results, with a characteristic low foot-flight, a shortened stride as the horse steps under his body, or both.

Manipulating the joint may cause obvious pain and muscle wastage may be evident. Treatment regimes currently available do not give a good outlook for a return to even paddock soundness and, in severe cases, euthanasia may need to be considered.

Another potential problem is hip dislocation, correctly termed coxofemoral luxation, which is rarely seen other than in miniatures. This can also occur in association with genetically predisposed lateral patella luxation (locking stifle). The small size of miniatures makes them good candidates for canine surgical techniques, with variable success and a guarded outlook for future soundness.

Miniature breeds also have increased incidence of tracheal collapse, which affects the windpipe and causes narrowing of the airway. This can happen in miniatures of all ages, often without any other respiratory disease, and is characterised by a respiratory noise that sounds like a goose honk.

Mild tracheal collapse may cause problems when the horse is exercised or stressed. In more severe cases, he may struggle to breathe at rest and his tongue and gums may turn blue due to lack of oxygen. In addition to rest and treatment of any lower airway disease, another option is to place a stent in the collapsed trachea — although this carries potential complications.

Breeding miniatures can be challenging. Early pregnancy diagnosis by ultrasound scanning via the rectum is often hard to achieve, which makes accurate prediction of foaling dates and early detection of twin pregnancies difficult. Fortunately, twinning rates in miniatures are

relatively low.

Because of an increased risk of dystocia (birthing difficulties), miniature broodmares should be monitored closely by CCTV at the time of foaling. An assisted birth may well be required.

Appropriate care, hoof trimming and regular exercise such as lungeing, long-reining or driving can head off other health issues. If he is stabled, a miniature will need a space measuring at least 8x8ft with a bottom door of a height that he can look over.

Take care that he is not bullied by bigger fieldmates by providing a low-railed area so he can have his own space. Ideally, graze him with other miniatures to allow him to interact with this own kind.

Defects and dwarfism

Very few figures are available on the prevalence and characterisation of congenital defects in miniature horses — a problem currently in the spotlight in the dog world.

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) works with the Kennel Club to identify and classify the severity of certain inherited conditions in dogs that are detrimental to their health. These include hip and elbow dysplasia and hereditary eye problems.

More recently, the BVA has launched a campaign associated with health and welfare concerns in brachycephalic dogs such as pugs, which feature a shortened skull shape.

These programmes are based on recognition of a real problem and an increase in its occurrence or severity, followed by the development of techniques for diagnostic testing.

Should the same happen for miniatures horses?

Flagging up and recording health problems could play a vital role in assisting research into the possible genetic links, ultimately leading to breeding programmes to address these issues.

Selection for small size can sometimes go wrong, resulting in the undesirable genetic trait of dwarfism and the associated limb deformities. Many miniature breed societies try to avoid accepting horses with known dwarfism breeding lines. Studies are currently being carried out with the aim of developing genetic testing for some types of dwarfism, to facilitate miniature horse breeding in the future.

Two pint-sized rescue ponies are the adorable mascots of this summer’s World Equestrian Games (WEG) in Tryon, United States.

Star and Huck were adopted by the managers of Tryon Equestrian Partners, Mark and Katherine Bellissimo, in 2016.

The Bellissimos rehomed the pair of ponies from the Peeps Foundation, an organisation dedicated to rescuing miniature horses and giving them a permanent home.

The pair have been inseparable since they were adopted, and have become a popular feature of the Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC), where WEG is being held in September.

“We are delighted that two of our four-legged family members will be able to partake in the Games,” said Katherine.

“We’ve brought them to a few events here at TIEC and down in Wellington, and every time I am impressed at how they touch people’s lives. Their size and personalities make them so approachable, and they thoroughly enjoy interacting with the crowds.

“It will be fantastic to have the two of them here for the fans to engage with during WEG.”

Star and Huck are set to have a full calendar of public appearances as the newly-appointed mascots.

Part of their training includes practising the skills needed for each of the eight FEI disciplines, as they strive to emulate their equine role models. They will sport discipline-specific outfits, as well as mini coolers to match the official WEG coolers, designed by Horseware Ireland.

When you have to crouch down to pat a pony, they like to roll over for a tummy tickle or need a hole cutting in the bottom of the stable door, you'd be forgiven for thinking you have a dog on your hands. To celebrate this week's 'mini marvels' special of Horse & Hound magazine (1 June 2017), we meet some of Britain's tiniest ponies and miniature horses

1. Tulisa, 32″

My little three-year-old 32″ Falabella-cross Tulisa is often mistaken as a dog, due to her love of belly rubs and walks with all my other dogs. Tulisa is a very cheeky little girl, has a big character and everybody adores her. She is also known as the greyhound on the yard due to the speed she runs around her paddock. Shirley Clift

This is my little miniature Shetland Zebedee who has had a hole made in his stable door so he can see what everyone else is up to. Sue Sleightholm

3. Stepley Pride

This is our miniature Shetland pony Stepley Pride (Priddles) and also affectionately known as The Big Dog. Priddles has more of a dog/human personality and is very clever and can escape from pretty much anywhere. She is pictured here with my daughter Lacey. Vikki Bray

4. Hermits Dainty Damsel, 26″

This is Hermits Dainty Damsel. She comes on hacks with us and is definitely the boss. She also likes coming into the house! Sarah Beattie

5. Broomells Sun Up, 34″

This is my 34″ miniature British spotted pony stallion, Broomells Sun Up (Tigger). I show him in hand and he has won many accolades including titles at Horse of the Year Show, the Royal Internatonal Horse Show and the British Spotted Pony Society to name but a few. I have harlequin Great Danes and when they are out together they tend to get a lot of double takes. Ronnie Jones

6. Fudge

This is our miniature Shetland Fudge. He joined the family as a companion for my thoroughbred-cross mare Annie as she suffered from separation anxiety when I rode my other horse and left her at home. Fudge is a real character who likes to come into the kitchen if the door is left open and enjoys walkies with the dogs on summer evenings. Nia Jones

7. Rio, 36″

This is Rio who is about 36″ but 17hh of attitude! He’s a lovely character but definitely the boss. Lucinda Morgan

8. Cartier, 28″

This is Cartier who is an American Miniature Horse meeting children while doing pony therapy. His temperament is very calm and well behaved. He sometimes goes into care homes to visit residents and even goes in lifts to see people in their rooms. Katy Smith

9. Pebbles, 89cms

Pebbles has the most perfect temperament and genuinely hasn’t put one hoof wrong in the three-and-a-bit years we have had her. We do a lot of fancy dress as she will not bat an eye at anything! She had a three foot sail on her last time when we dressed her as a pirate ship. She is a pony in a million and has looked after our children so well. Whenever we go out it’s always met with ooos and ahhhs — Pebbles is the wonder pony! Gayle King

10. Slaneyrose Kiss of Fire (Finn), 19″ as a foal

This foal was the size of a Spaniel in this photo at a few weeks old. His temperament is extremely friendly — in fact he wants to be with people more than other horses and it’s impossible to keep him out of the house when he grazes in the garden. I leave the back door open for the dogs in the summer and woke one night with him staring at me in bed! Kim Jackman

11. Bambi and Crunchie

I have a dog that’s always mistaken for a pony — if I had a quid for every time people threaten to put a saddle on him I would be rich by now. Here is Bambi, Crusoe and Crunchie. The miniature Shetlands belong to Tumpy Green Equestrian Centre and are retired now. Crusoe the Leonberger is chief carrot, apple and water tester at Tumpy and owned by myself. Debbie Church

This is my son Oscar’s tiny pony Nugget. I’m not sure how tiny Nugget is but you can see from the picture — at Oscar and Nugget’s first meet — that she’s not much taller than the hounds! Charlotte Adams

13. Poppy, 33″

This is Poppy, my rescue mini Shetland. She’s 33″ and has turned her hooves to everything. She’s cheeky with a bit of feistiness in her but has never bitten or kicked anyone. She’s a true pony for life. Adel Bowes

Silver is the same size as a greyhound but thinks she’s a Rottweiler. It’s her way or not at all! She’s extremely cheeky and thinks nothing of mugging you. She likes to roll on feed buckets and climbs on top of a bale of straw like a goat. Melissa matthews

15. Twizzlelina, 5hh

This is Twizzlelina. She is 5hh. She used to be used as a comfort blanket for my thoroughbred mare Luna when she was younger and they shared a stable. Now she makes guest appearances at nursery groups and various other charity and horse related events. She is very willful and definitely has small person syndrome — she won’t be told that she can’t do something. Rachel Purkis

A video of a miniature horse in training on long reins has gone viral on social media.

The clip has been watched by more than 500,000 people and attracted thousands of likes, comments and shares.

Spectacle of the Ark (Spectacle) is the pony featured in the clip.

The four-year-old stallion was bred by Marianne Kloosterman and has been in training at Special Tiny Trotters in the Netherlands since November.

The yard specialises in single pleasure driving and breeding miniature horses.

“He’s really a happy horse and full of life!” Spectacle’s trainer Charlotte Van Gurp told H&H.

“We have been teaching him the Spanish paso, which I learnt from Thamar Gotthjalpsen. She is one of the best instructors I know and together we have spent a few years training miniature horses in high dressage.

“Every day Spectacle gave us more and more steps so we started asking him to do it in trot. He gave us big high movements and in the beginning his legs were everywhere and it was really funny.

“But after a few weeks of training he got it — his balance improved and the carriage of his body went to his back legs.

“With Spectacle it was like he was built like a little bodybuilder at first, but after a couple of weeks training he was progressing and he started to dance.

“Every day he is improving but it takes time, patience and a lot of kisses and compliments.

“He loves the work and comes out his stable every day with the Spanish walk, like, ‘Ok, I am ready!’”

Charlotte trains Spectacle in a tennis court, which provides consistent ground all year round.

While the majority of comments on the video of Spectacle were positive, some questioned the training techniques being used.

A handful of Facebook users asked whether he was wearing weighted boots and others suggested he was being ‘strapped down’ with equipment.

Spectacle was in fact just wearing bandages on his front legs.

Charlotte added that he was not being forced into a certain carriage, but carrying himself freely.

“Some horses are built to do certain things, just like some people are built to do or not do certain things,” she added.

“Once you establish that it is natural, true training makes the horse responsible for their movements.

A miniature Shetland named Pudding has been revealed as one of the most unusual items left behind by Travelodge guests last year.

Pudding’s owners had been staying at the Ayr branch of the hotel chain last summer.

They asked staff to look after the pony while they ran some errands around the town, but they ended up being much longer than they expected.

“The team looked after the pony and fed and watered him,” a Travelodge spokesman told H&H.

“They pony was absolutely fine and was a massive hit with guests and staff.”

Pudding is not the only extraordinary thing to have been left at Travelodges in 2015.

A Chewbacca costume, diamond tiara and a politician’s speech are among the other finds that have made their way to lost and found.

Pudding is also not the only Shetland to have hit the headlines this week for making into “lost property”.

In Trowbridge, Wilts, a miniature Shetland, known as Harvey (pictured, top), escaped and made his way to the town’s fire station.

Bradford on Avon’s community policing team described it as “Hot Fuzz moment number one of 2016”.

A concerned member of the public called police to report a Shetland pony “galloping” towards the fire station.

PCSO Andrew Maclachlan found the equine escapee grazing on the grass verge between the fire and ambulance stations.

“Concerned that he might return to the road, the pony was shepherded into the fire [station] car park. A superb multi agency approach between fire and police using carrots, apples and polo mints (other brands are available) resulted in successful capture of said pony,” said a post on the neighbourhood team’s Facebook page on Monday (4 January).

Meanwhile, firefighters from Trowbridge Fire Station took to Twitter to try and find the pony’s owner.

“I have seen some weird things in my time but coming face to face with a pony on the way to work just about takes the biscuit,” they tweeted.

Shortly after, Harvey’s owner was found and the pair were reunited.

“Apparently he has recently learned to open the gate to his paddock,” said a fire service spokesman.

A pint-sized pony has caused delight among horse lovers starring in a new TV advert for Amazon Prime.

The advert aired last week and has sparked an emotional reaction on social media with people stating the pony was “melting” their hearts.

The advert features a lonely little pony who is unable to make friends with the horses at his farm.

“Luckily his owner comes to the rescue with a clever new purchase using Amazon Prime’s One-Day Delivery. Remember, whatever the situation you find yourself in, there are “Millions of ways to save the day, delivered in one day”,” said a spokesman for Amazon.

He’s not the only Shetland to cause a storm online either.

in 2013, Socks moonwalked his way into the public’s hearts. The dancing Shetland pony became an internet phenomenon.

The video, an advert for mobile phone company Three, has been a hit on the television as well as online.

The dancing pony throws some shapes, thanks to a little CGI help, on the cliffs of Eshaness, to “Everywhere” by Fleetwood Mac.

In the first weekend it had more than 1million views on YouTube.

And he was back delight his fans around the world with a festive version last Christmas.

A tiny American miniature foal who has become an internet sensation has partnered up with an equally small companion.

Minuscule colt Microdave picked up countless fans when his birth was reported on horseandhound.co.uk last month (23 June). He stood at just 10-inches-tall when he was three days old.

However, Microdave was feeling lonely since he was so much smaller than his fieldmates in Haysden, Kent.

His owner Jen Baldwin Murphy decided that the now 18-inch foal needed a friend of his own size.

Microdave now shares his stable with a dwarf micropig named Bean from a neighbouring farm.

“Microdave was in desperate need of a friend,” said Mrs Baldwin Murphy.

“Up until meeting Bean, he was quite confused about the world and his place in it — so it’s great to see Bean seems to have made him happy”.

Mircodave has been causing plenty of mischief and enjoys galloping between fields — no area is off limit for the tiny foal since he can fit under fences

The overo colt with blue eyes is by Little Dave, a British Show Pony Association graded American miniature stallion.

“He’s doing very well and is getting naughtier and naughtier,” Mrs Baldwin Murphy told H&H.

“He’s been so popular — it’s been absolutely non-stop with visitors. I have to check people’s pockets as they leave to check they haven’t stolen him.”

Mrs Baldwin Murphy also owns Microdave’s dam, Looking Glass Rustys Red Ribbon (Barbie), who is also an American miniature.

“I’ve only kept miniatures for two years — they’re my relaxation from the big guys,” said the showing and dressage rider who runs Haysden Liveries.

“They [American miniatures] are getting more and more popular. People import them from the US and they are getting quite a following. Some people just have them as pets.”

An orphaned foal has formed “a real bond” with his foster mother and new sister to the delight of staff at the Miniature Pony Centre in Devon.

The black colt called Phoenix lost his own mother when he was just eight weeks old.

The mare, called Ladybrook, had developed colic and despite the vet’s attempts to save her she died on 2 June.

Another mare at the centre Sisken had given birth to a chestnut filly named Aziza on 27 April, 23 days after Phoenix was born.

“Sisken has one of the most caring natures out of all of our mares so we introduced Phoenix to her,” said Joanna Ginsberg, the centre’s manager.

“In reality you cannot expect a mare with her own foal to just accept another foal, but in a short time they were standing next to each other.”

Staff watched “with fingers crossed” waiting for the kick or the nip to shoo Phoenix away but it never happened.

Phoenix wasn’t too keen on the goats milk-filled bottles given to him by the centre’s staff but went straight in when given the chance to suckle from his new foster mother.

“As we would expect Sisken was not entirely convinced about this new situation but all she did was swish her tail and look a little put out,” said Ms Ginsberg.

“She soon adopted Phoenix as one of her own.”

The two foals have become close friends and Phoenix has been seen sleeping with his head on Aziza with Sisken watching over.

Sisken has been given extra food so she can produce enough milk for both foals and Phoenix is given foal creep pellets to make sure he has all the vitamins he needs.

The new foals join five others born this year including one miniature donkey.

Phoenix will go out with the main herd of 59 miniature ponies later this summer and will be sold next February as a yearling.

He may be minuscule, but American miniature Microdave has been causing plenty of mischief since his birth earlier this month (11 June).

The overo colt with blue eyes is by Little Dave, a British Show Pony Association graded American miniature stallion.

He stood at just 12-inches-tall when he was pictured at three days old, and is destined for a career in the showring.

Microdave has already settled into his yard at Upper Haysden, Kent, and enjoys galloping between fields — no area is off-limit for the tiny foal since he can fit under the fences.

“He’s doing very well and is getting naughtier and naughtier,” his owner Jen Baldwin Murphy told H&H.

“He gallops in and out of the field under the fence with his mum going frantic. I need to put fencing underneath so he can’t escape.

“I have converted a hay barn into miniature stables with low enough doors.

“People can’t believe how small he is, when you stand next to him his withers are below your knee.

“He’s been so popular — it’s been absolutely non-stop with visitors. I have to check people’s pockets as they leave to check they haven’t stolen him.”

Mrs Baldwin Murphy also owns Microdave’s dam, Looking Glass Rustys Red Ribbon (Barbie), who is also an American miniature.

“I’ve only kept miniatures for two years — they’re my relaxation from the big guys,” said the showing and dressage rider who runs Haysden Liveries.

“They [American miniatures] are getting more and more popular. People import them from the US and they are getting quite a following. Some people just have them as pets.”

Mrs Baldwin Murphy had originally planned to sell on the foal but when she saw Microdave’s unusual colouring and blue eyes she was determined to keep him.

“I hope to show him in the future,” she added.

Two miniature ponies that were rescued by the Horses and Ponies Protection Association (HAPPA) have been successful in the show ring.

HAPPA Little John was found tied to a tree in a remote forest in November. He had strangles and had been abandoned.

HAPPA Gandalf was found emaciated in September 2013. A member of the public alerted the charity when they found him abandoned on wasteland tethered with a chain without food or water.

After rehabilitation by the charity the ponies were both found loan homes.

And now HAPPA Foula Orlando (Little John) and HAPPA Liscombe Park Jim Hawkin (Gandalf) have embarked on a showing career.

The pair competed at the Red Rose Shetland Show at Crow Wood Equestrian Centre earlier this month (7 June), which is affiliated to the Shetland Pony Stud Book Society. Both ponies came home with ribbons and Little John secured a first place in the coloured section for best gelding.

“It was wonderful to get the boys together and they became ‘stablemates’ for the day. Their manners were impeccable with each other for a first time meeting,” said Louise Bleasdale, borrower of Little John.

“We are going to get together in the future to show them again and help promote the wonderful work HAPPA do. People were amazed when speaking to us about the ponies to be told their stories of how they came to be rescued from such terrible circumstances. We had so many wonderful comments about the fantastic condition both ponies are in.”

Natalie Lofthouse, borrower of Gandalf, added: “Gandalf has been doing really well this year, securing placings in mountain and moorland classes. He has lots of accolades including two trophies and a sash. He is a real character and loves to gallop around the fields at home keeping up with the bigger horses. He is also the boss and most definitely rules the roost; his favourite pastime is eating grass and having a little buck. He is a tiny pony with a big personality and has captured our hearts — he is a little superstar and we love him dearly.”

As the ponies were microchipped, when they were rescued HAPPA could trace their parentage and obtain passports for the ponies, enabling them to enter affiliated shows. Their owners, however, have not been traced.

A man had been charged with killing 6 prize-winning miniature horses near Adelaide, Australia last month (21 December).

The 2 colts and 4 fillies were found dead in their stables by staff with their throats slit. 3 other miniatures were left unharmed.

A 50-year-old man was arrested on 27 December and charged with aggravated serious criminal trespass, property damage and ill-treatment of animals.

The arrested man was bailed and is due to appear in the Victor Harbor Magistrates Court in March.

A statement from owners Julie and Mel Jackson on their Facebook page said that they were “disappointed” that the suspect had been bailed.

“We want the monster who committed this heinous crime to face court and to receive the maximum penalty the justice system can provide,” the statement said.

“We need to hear what possible reason he could have for carrying out this horrendous act.”

Police are continuing to investigate, but it is believed that it was a targeted rather than a random attack.

A small group of American Miniature Horses are bringing smiles to disabled children and the elderly in the North East of England.

After a quick roll around in the field every morning, Mr.P, Wish and Monet set off to work visiting nursing homes and disabled children.

Their owner Katy Smith believes that the ponies, which are roughly the same size as a golden retriever, are a great form of therapy.

“The horses evoke emotions and help people that are normally very withdrawn and find it difficult to communicate with people,” Katy told H&H.

“I have had patients that won’t talk to people either having a silent conversation or talking away to these little horses.”

No one misses out on visits from the ponies as they do bedroom visits and even take the lift see patients.

In his spare time Mr.P is also a successful show pony and has qualified for the Horse of the Year Show (9-13 October)

The ponies have also been nominated for the Animal Hero Awards.

Police are appealing for information after two miniature ponies belonging to a disabled man were stolen from stables in Charlton, Middlesex.

Bailey, a skewbald eight-month-old filly with four white socks (pictured above right), and Tinkerbell, a two-year-old, appaloosa filly (pictured below), were both taken from Manor Farm Stables between 7pm and 7am on 29 December.

Tinkerbell measures 33 inches high, and Bailey, who is microchipped, measures 30 inches. When stolen, they were wearing matching blue combo rugs, made by Dinky Rugs.

Owner Daniel Nicholls, who is wheelchair-bound following a serious riding accident three years ago, had only owned the ponies for four weeks.

“We think that they were led down the road and put into a van,” Daniel told H&H. “Two fences had been knocked down and the padlock had been broken off the gate.

“There are 13 horses at the yard but only those two were taken. We think that they were being watched as the last person at the stables noticed a van waiting nearby in the lane, but it drove off when it was approached.”

Both fillies were well-bred: Bailey’s grandfather was the champion at Horse of the Year Show for three consecutive years and Tinkerbell has bloodlines from the Toy Horse Stud.

Daniel has been distributing posters and has launched a Facebook group called “Find my miniature ponies” to appeal for information.

“I got these ponies as they are small enough for me to handle. My other horse is just too big and clumsy,” explained Daniel.

“They are the first ponies I have had any interaction with without being squashed since my accident. It is terrible that they have been stolen like this.”

Miniature ponies are to get their own stud book in Ireland from February, following the recognition of the Miniature Horse and Pony Society of Ireland by the Irish department of agriculture.

Until now Irish horses had to be affiliated to foreign societies if they were to be registered as miniatures.

Chairman of the society Joan Hawkins said from January they will be able to issue passports to the 4,000 miniature ponies estimated to live in Ireland.

The first fully registered Irish miniature foals will be born from 2010.

A full investigation has been launched after two miniature horses died in a suspicious fire at stables near Rochester.

Police were called to Binney Road, Allhallows in Kent, at around 2.20pm on Friday 22 February after fire fighters had stemmed the blaze.

The two American 27inch ponies were bequeathed to Sarah Farrow last October.

Sarah told H&H: “I have known them all their lives, I was there when they were born. My sister-in-law passed away in October and left them to me in her will.”

Three stables and her tack room were destroyed along with the two ponies.

“I was left with just the hoof pick in my pocket. My horses have come across the worst of humanity, but there have been some wonderful people who have come to my rescue,” she added. “I would like to thank the two strangers who have sent me rugs and other equipment for the other horses I own.

“I would also like to thank all those that tried to save the lives of my ponies.”

Detective constable Steve Goldsmith from Medway police said: “This is a cruel and malicious act and a full investigation has been launched.”

Throughout the past year, owners of other horses in the yard had been receiving threatening letters and had their horse’s mane and tail hacked off in the night. It is not known if these events are linked to the arson attack.

Sarah had five other horses stabled at Binney Road, which were moved to safer lodgings within an hour of the attack. She hopes someone may be able to help the police in their investigation.

“These people need to be tracked down before a tragedy like this happens again,” said Sarah.

Police are appealing for two 12-year-old boys to come forward who were seen nearby at the time of the attack and could be key witnesses.

A nine-year-old boy suffering from leukaemia is looking forward to being reunited with his pet miniature ponies that disappeared just before Christmas.

The two ponies, and two others grazing with them, went missing while Izaak Nunney, of Bradford, was receiving treatment in hospital.

His family feared they had been stolen as a Christmas present and reported their disappearance to the police.

But now the ponies have been found, grazing in the garden of a home five miles away.

Izaak’s step-father John Wilcock said: “We were so relieved. Izaak has not seen them yet because he’s been back in hospital but we are hoping he will be out by the end of the week.”

The ponies were given to Izaak by his grandmother when he was diagnosed with leukaemia in August and are kept at a local farm.

Scottish police have launched a hunt for a miniature Shetland pony, which was stolen from a field in Clackmannanshire.

Six-month-old Dulcie, who stands just 7hh, was taken sometime between 2pm and 6pm on Tuesday 23 October from a field at Shavelhaugh Loan, between Alva and Fishcross.

Central Scotland Police say the thief could have just carried Dulcie off.

Dulcie is grey with a peach coloured muzzle and a faint star.

Owners of small ponies are being warned to be extra vigilant following a recent spate of thefts.

“About 20 small ponies have been stolen nationwide over the past three months,” said Helen Evans, Thames Valley Horsewatch co-ordinator.

In late September, two miniature horses were taken overnight from a field in Crowhurst, Surrey, and in a separate incident two Welsh ponies were taken from a field near Farringdon in Oxfordshire. The miniatures were found last weekend, but the owners of the Welsh ponies are still offering a substantial reward for the return of their ponies and conviction of the perpetrators.

Crowhurst-based Hazel Evans, who bought her two miniatures just three weeks before they were stolen, said: “We put a lot of posters up and I’ve since found out small pony theft is rife at this time of year. A lot of the thefts seem opportunistic, but these people must walk the fields at night.”

As H&H went to press on Monday, Hazel found her ponies. She received an anonymous call and found them “in an out of the way place”.

Maryoth Goodwin from Oakfield Riding School near Farringdon has not been so lucky. She owns one of the Welsh ponies stolen last month.

“Jade is about 25 — she doesn’t need that kind of trauma,” she said. “The gates were locked, so whoever took them cut the wire at the end of the paddock, dragged them through a ditch and cut another wire fence.”

Horsewatch co-ordinator Helen Evans explained why small ponies are such a target.

“Little ponies are not freezemarked because vets advise against it, and they are very easy to pinch. Someone goes past the field, comes back later when it’s quiet, lifts the pony over the fence and into the back of a car.

“The cars in these cases are often untraceable,” she said, adding: “If people have small ponies we tell them to get neighbours to keep an eye out; and keep up-to-date identity details.”

But Evans and Hampshire police equine liaison office Colin Pickworth are hugely enthusiastic about the current flow of information between police forces and Horsewatch.

“A lot of other forces are letting us know what’s going on,” said PC Pickworth. “Police work by gaining intelligence from the public — the more information we get, the better. We see crimes in Hampshire with the same modus operandi as those in Surrey — and it’s possible the same gangs are doing it.”
