Pros and cons: what the under-16s social media ban could mean for the horse world

The forthcoming ban on young people using social media has pros and cons for the equestrian world, it is believed – and there will be opportunities as a result.

The Government announced on 15 June that the ban for under-16s would come into force next spring, with the aim to “give kids their childhoods back”.

Ministers cited evidence that social media is linked to mental health issues, and said the ban would combat exposure to dangerous content, block “addictive” activities and help prevent online bullying and grooming.

Sylvia Bruce, charity Riders Minds mental health consultant, told H&H the ban has positives and negatives for equestrians.

“Social media can create unrealistic expectations, for example about riding ability, apparel, success, body image and horse ownership,” she said. “A ban could reduce anxiety, pressure, and stress to seem perfect, and avoid harmful ‘comparison traps’.

She said a ban could help young riders focus on learning more from qualified professionals rather than copying unsuitable viral trends, adding: “Developing horsemanship skills builds confidence and resilience, supports growth, development and overall wellbeing, a win-win for both horse and rider welfare.

“A ban could help protect against pressure to take sponsorships, secure brand deals, post constantly, be exploited for profit and avoid ‘comparison traps’ with others online. Equestrian content can fuel negative comparison, online criticism and pressure for followers and likes. A ban would remove contributory factors to poor mental health, such as seeking online validation and avoiding cyberbullying.”

But, Ms Bruce added, lack of access to social media could limit community engagement, support and communication; sites can help young riders connect, and a ban could “increase isolation, loneliness and disconnection”, as well as reducing education and inclusion

“Many riders learn from online demonstrations, welfare advice, tack reviews, training ideas and event coverage,” she said. “A ban would remove valuable access to knowledge, inspiration, learning and participation opportunities, especially of marginalised groups.

“And comparison inspires and motivates too. A ban removes access to the positive, informative and encouraging voices in the equestrian community. The ban limits access to education, knowledge, growth opportunities and personal development, all vital for better mental health.”

One of the original equestrian influencers is Esme Higgs, who started sharing videos of her pony on YouTube aged 15. Ten years on, she has 1.12m subscribers.

Esme told H&H only 10% of her viewers will be affected as the rest are over 16.

“I’ve always made my content wholesome, so anyone of any age can watch it, but also, I edit and film my own videos and I’ve got to find them entertaining as well at 25!” she said.

“I find there are a lot of families that watch my videos together, which I think is so lovely; it’s something the whole family can sit down and watch and enjoy.”

Esme added that most of her videos are long-format; she said she understands the desire to ban the short-format TikTok-style clips that can be addictive but hers are more like episodes of a television show. Hers are also all on YouTube Kids, which was designed to be safer and suitable for children and is not covered by the ban.

She also pointed out Instagram already has accounts specifically for teenagers, which have more restrictions and parental control.

Unregulated alternatives

“The thing that worries me is that all these kids will probably find some alternative to talk on or post videos on, which isn’t regulated and doesn’t have these protections,” she said.

“I agree something was needed; maybe a time limit as people spend so many hours on social media rather than the real world but we’re in a cost-of-living crisis and doing things is expensive.

“I feel very conflicted; I understand how social media can be such a community for some people. For some people, they might be having a bad day or have a bad home life, and my world of ponies that they can go to after school is a safe place and educational.”

Esme added that her videos are on Spotify, and she is considering a standalone website.

PR professional and social media expert Rhea Freeman agreed that some influencers may want to consider other options.

“People who are or have a target audience under 16 need to actively look at ways to keep their audience engaged without encouraging anyone to break the law,” she told H&H. “There are plenty of ways but they’re all very different to social media because it’s likely to involve platforms such as websites owned by the influencer, which will require marketing to promote, as well as development of features people want to see, rather than posting on a busy platform to an established audience.

“For the industry in general, the same applies; brands need to start developing other areas of their marketing strategy that allow them to engage this younger audience. There’s massive opportunity here for those who do it well, through experiential marketing or hubs and safe, online spaces developed just for their audience. I think we’re also likely to see more traditional media options used by brands, because a magazine aimed at people inside this age bracket is likely to get a lot more relevant attention than posting on a platform where, legally, those people shouldn’t be anyway.”

Ms Freeman added that for brands and influencers that rely solely on social media, this is a wake-up call.

“We don’t control social media, and building an entire business and revenue stream on something that could be taken away overnight with no explanation is not a good idea,” she said. “At least with the ban, there’s a warning, so now is the time to put those plans in place and build while you can still use social media to promote what you’re doing and growing somewhere else.”

‘There’s always someone to listen’: trainer takes on epic challenge for rider who died aged 20

An instructor at the National Horseracing College (NHC) has raised over £1,000 in memory of a former student – and to help other young people realise “there is always someone there to listen”.

Natalie Dunning completed the Yorkshire three peaks challenge on 10 May in aid of men’s mental health charity Andy’s Man Club. She was inspired by the memory of former student and stable lad Billy Moffatt, who died aged 20 a year ago.

“Billy was a valued member of staff within the racing industry,” said Natalie. “He was a likeable character and his loss has been felt deeply by members of the racing community and instructors here at the college.”

“By raising funds for Andy’s Man Club, I hope to honour Billy’s memory and make sure other young people in racing know there is always someone there to listen.”

Natalie completed the challenge in five hours and 45 minutes.

“It was incredibly hard,” she said “I wasn’t naive to the fact it would be, but it was nothing in comparison to what Billy and his family went through and that kept me going when I really started to struggle.

“Working with learners every day, you remember them long after they have graduated from the NHC. I still think about Billy a lot and it’s a reminder how important my job is and the impact we can make at the college, to care and support young people in racing.

“I hope it’s a reminder to students that we are always here to listen and support them, and that doesn’t stop when they graduate.”

The JustGiving donation page will be open until Sunday 31 May.

The NHC also reminded those in the industry of charity Racing Welfare, which offers support and guidance in all areas, including finance, housing and mental health.

We shouldn’t take riding horses for granted and we should tell others why we love it, says Pammy Hutton

Pammy Hutton shares her thoughts on the true value of horses and riding in the modern world

“There’s nothing so good for the inside of a man as the outside of a horse.”

Often attributed to Winston Churchill or former US president Ronald Reagan, this truism is in fact from Sir John Lubbock’s book The Use of Life, published in 1894.

Lubbock was a liberal politician and banker, a contemporary of Charles Darwin, and an influential scientist and thinker. He is credited with helping to establish archaeology as a discipline and later purchased the land at Avebury, Wiltshire, to protect the historic stones that stand there today.

The human condition, and how best to make use of it, fascinated Lubbock. His astute observations on the value of horses to people, made at a time when equines were part of everyday life, feel more relevant than ever in today’s changed world.

I’m lucky enough to meet lots of people of all ages and from different walks of life at Talland School of Equitation, our family’s riding school. “Why do you ride?” I love to ask the unsuspecting.

Many clearly have not really thought about it.

But when they do, the floodgates open…

“I just love horses.”“They make me happy.”“I love the way they make me feel.”“It’s the best part of my day,”“It’s the only place I can find quiet peace.”“It’s discipline and a challenge!”

Google tells me that enjoyable activities – including overcoming the difficult – cause your body to release “happy” neurotransmitters and hormones, leading to both physical and emotional reactions. The responses can be immediate and mood-enhancing as well as contributing to long-term health benefits.

In equestrian terms, that lovely endorphin rush doesn’t necessarily come from winning Badminton, a dressage championship, show or race. Its root lies in the physical and emotional connection that is our love for horses.

The modern version of Lubbock’s “inside of a man” is truly “a person’s physical and mental health and happiness”.

We have several riders at our riding school who are past their best – it’s not just me – and for whom riding once or twice a week helps with mobility issues and even dementia.

The lucky ones

Sometimes we take riding for granted. A friend in the north, who’d been snow-bound and unable to ride for a week, expressed sheer joy at the chance of a steady hack. “Never again will I complain about having to exercise my horse in all weathers. I’m the lucky one,” she declared.

A ride I had the other day gave me a high for a week. The feel, the togetherness, ease, harmony and fun. No wonder horses are addictive!

Equestrianism could be so much better marketed to the public with a focus on the benefits of riding for everyone. Let’s not make it too complicated. Let’s just say “I love riding” to as many as will listen.

Yes, the industry needs to look outside itself more. I saw on TV a 93-year-old woman giving dance classes. She looked as fit as a fiddle, and her pupils were ecstatically brimming with all the benefits. I wanted to join in…

Not only should we promote riding to children, but also to the life-begins-at-whatever-age-you-choose brigade. They’re the ones with disposable income, time and health consciousness.

So, are our governing bodies’ marketing departments working on this? Or was I the only person watching early-morning TV?

Don’t worry, though, I won’t be sitting in that chair for long. I’m off for a ride – “I love riding.”

Preserving peace

On another note, are equestrian establishments becoming easy targets for property developers and councils to grab land for house building?

Talland and The Kiln Equestrian Centre in Surrey know all about this. With 660 houses due to appear on our Gloucestershire doorstep, our peaceful hacking could become less peaceful.

However, if I really believe all the above, I can’t afford to be a NIMBY. The incoming residents could be good for business. So I’ll hack down there with the horse I love – and sell riding to them.

Your horse is living in your nervous system – how your mental health struggles can impact your partnership

Equestrian sport has always prized grit and resilience. But more riders are realising mental health isn’t something you can leave at the stable door. The pressures of work, relationships, finances or top-level competition follow us into the saddle and flow straight into our horses.

“It’s a misconception that mental strength is about ignoring how you feel,” says equestrian psychology coach Charlie Unwin, who has worked with elite riders and now shares the tools used with them with grassroots equestrians, via Peak Rider’s bank of practical resources. “Real resilience is about awareness – knowing when your internal world is helping or hindering you, and having tools to shift it.”

Horses, he explains, are emotional barometers.

“They don’t listen to words – they read your body language, micro tensions, even your breathing. You might think you’re hiding stress, but the horse has already picked it up. They’re in effect living in your nervous system.”

He adds that this connection is measurable. Scientists can track how a horse’s heart rate variability mirrors the rider’s, revealing the state of both nervous systems.

“When we become dysregulated,” Charlie says, “the horse also becomes dysregulated. We breathe differently, we think differently, and we make more threat-oriented decisions – fixating on what the horse might shy at, instead of the task we’re trying to do.”

It’s a message echoed by Linnea Aarflot, who runs Mind.Body.Dressage and has spent more than two decades helping riders, from amateurs to Olympic hopefuls.

“We behave about 5% from our conscious mind and 95% from our subconscious,” she explains.

“If you’re carrying tension from work or old emotional wounds, your horse feels it, even if you’re smiling on the outside. They respond not to your intentions, but to your true internal state.”

And that, Charlie and Linnea agree, can change everything – not just for performance in the arena, but also for the wellbeing of our horses.

Mental health in riders: the constant struggle of life’s demands

Nicola Bell, a grand prix dressage rider, knows how personal turmoil can slip into the saddle.

“It was the year I turned 40 – my annus horribilis. Divorce, my parents’ ill health, and more,” she says.

“At the same time, I had an Oldenburg stallion I loved and thought he’d keep me going. But the relationship soured, which makes me so emotional because we’d had such a strong bond. I wish I’d sent him to someone else for a while.”

Nicola’s story is personal – but far from unique. Many riders find that everyday life quietly spills into their time with horses, sometimes with heartbreaking consequences.

Megan Lane, a doctoral candidate at Liverpool John Moores University, found nearly half the dual-career equestrians in her study were experiencing high levels of burnout, far above the 5-10% typical in other sports.

Riders described the constant struggle to balance the demands of work, family life, and caring for their horses, leaving them exhausted.

“Sometimes you just want to go home after work, but you can’t. And the enjoyment level goes out of it,” Megan adds.

Equestrian sport’s cultural mindset can also make riders hesitant to seek help.

“It’s ingrained from when you’re young that if you fall off, you get back on, even if you’re hurt,” Megan explains. “People feel they have to carry on no matter what.”

Yet the consequences can be serious, ranging from physical exhaustion to mental health struggles such as depression.

“I wish people weren’t scared to ask for help, because that’s when it can get a lot worse,” she says.

“I felt like I was living two lives”

If that paints a rather bleak picture of equestrian sport, Megan’s research also highlighted something many riders instinctively know: that horses can also offer protection against stress and provide an escape from life’s worries.

For five-star event rider Mollie Summerland – who won the CCI5*-L at Luhmühlen Horse Trials in 2021 at just 22 and has since spoken with remarkable openness about her mental health struggles – this has certainly been true.

“When everyone thought I’d come home from Luhmühlen celebrating, I was actually back in hospital,” Mollie shares. “No amount of good results took away the sadness. I felt like I was living two lives: pretending everything was fine at shows, while privately struggling.

“At one point, hospital admissions became routine. I’d be discharged, then soon be back at high-level competitions.”

Yet even in her darkest moments, Mollie’s horses kept her tethered to hope.

“My horses were my saviours during that time. Knowing I had them waiting for me at home, and big competitions drawing closer while I was in the hospital, gave me the strength and focus I needed to get better and go home to them. I felt I was letting them down if I went to a show lacking preparation.”

It’s a sentiment many riders echo: horses are both a lifeline and, sometimes, an additional source of pressure. Because while horses can soothe and heal, they also demand our very best – and that expectation can become overwhelming for some when life gets heavy.

Amateur rider Rhiannon Davies balances a corporate job with life alongside her seven-year-old Irish Draught, Harley, sharing their journey on social media and through her podcasts – The Equestrian Money Diaries and This Equestrian Life, which she co-hosts with horse trainer Miri Hackett.

“He’s the part of my day I look forward to the most,” Rhiannon says, “but that also means I attach an emotional element to riding.

“I want to show up well for him, which adds pressure. And horses are so intelligent, it makes total sense that they’d pick up on how we’re feeling and respond accordingly. It’s important we’re aware of that.

“I wish I’d reminded myself more that this is supposed to be fun, for both of us.”

Mollie’s story shows that even riders who keep performing at the highest level can carry a heavy emotional load behind the scenes. For others, like Rhiannon, the desire to “show up well” can sometimes turn a beloved hobby into an added source of pressure.

How to handle our mental health as riders

That’s where sports psychologists and mental health coaches step in, helping riders handle not just performance demands but the hidden emotional weight of caring for horses.

“If we know that horses’ heart rates can sync with their riders – and that a rider’s spikes with anxiety, even if nothing external is happening – it’s clear why learning to regulate your own state is one of the most powerful skills any rider can develop,” explains Charlie.

“We’re not trying to avoid stress, we’re trying to get better at handling it.”

The first step, both Charlie and Linnea agree, is self-awareness.

“Before you even approach your horse, check in with yourself,” Charlie says. “Ask: how am I feeling right now? Am I anxious, angry, or distracted? That’s not weakness – it’s crucial data.”

He gives a powerful analogy: “It’s like walking on the edge of a pavement. You can do it all day, one foot in front of the other, but if the pavement were three stories high, you’d walk completely differently. Yet people blame their walking. They go away and practise walking, but it’s not the walking that’s the issue. It’s how you manage your mental state in that situation.”

It’s a reminder that riding more or drilling technique won’t fix an out-of-balance mental state.

Linnea frames it this way: “If your nervous system is already close to its limit, adding the demands of riding can push you over into fight-or-flight. It’s then your subconscious takes over, and you lose the ability to problem-solve calmly.”

Signs that you’re nearing your limit might include:

Feeling impatient or frustrated over small mistakes
Fixating on things that could go wrong
Shallow breathing
Holding tension in your shoulders, jaw or hands

The good news, Charlie stresses, is that riders have tools to regain balance.

“Breathwork is your fastest route to shifting state,” he says. “It’s how we move from threat mode to connection mode.”

His go-to technique is the 4-7-8 breath: inhale for four seconds, hold for seven, exhale for eight.

“That lengthens the exhale, which activates the parasympathetic nervous system – your body’s calm-down system.”

Meanwhile, Linnea focuses on helping riders identify emotional patterns and train their nervous systems.

“The nervous system is like a muscle,” she explains. “You can train it to tolerate more pressure without tipping into stress. It’s not a quick fix, though – it’s like going to the gym or improving your diet. One day won’t change your life.”

Miri, Rhiannon’s podcast co-host and founder of Hackett Equine, a holistic, horse-first training centre, says: “A lot of the work I do is uncovering unconscious motivations and emotional patterns – and that can have a transformative effect on how we ride.”

“Being brave is stepping back”

But sometimes, the most powerful choice is simply to stay on the ground.

“There are times I decide that riding isn’t the right thing to do,” Miri adds.

She’s also been open about balancing mental health with life around horses.

“If I’m not feeling my best, I try to bring the pressure down and ask, ‘What can I do in this situation that will be a positive experience for both horse and rider?’

“Slowing down is one of the best ways we can regulate our nervous systems – rushing is so chronic, people don’t even notice how fast they’re going. It’s also important to remember that a horse’s behaviour is never personal – they’re just responding to what’s happening around them or within you.”

Nicola has learned a similar lesson. “These days, I’d step back instead of pushing through. The horse doesn’t need to go out and do 20-metre circles if I’m in bits inside.

“Being brave can mean stepping back. You’re not weak if you decide not to ride. You’re being intelligent. I’d tell any rider now: listen to your gut. It’s the best horseman you’ll ever meet.”

Mental health in riders: let’s talk!

Everyone we spoke to agreed: talking about mental health matters. Staying silent only makes struggles feel heavier, while opening up can be the first step toward real change for riders and their horses.

“I struggled with feeling a lot of shame for a long time – it felt taboo to me,” Mollie says. “But now I’m so passionate about normalising open conversations around mental health. I’ve come to a place where I feel no shame at all in being transparent if it can help others.”

She adds: “Everyone has things going on behind closed doors. Helping people feel they can speak openly – even to trainers – means we can support each other and factor that into how we work with our horses.”

Rhiannon’s advice for other amateurs juggling life and horses is simple but powerful: “Learn to recognise your emotions and limits, and figure out what helps in tough moments. Surround yourself with people who encourage you and call you out when you’re too hard on yourself or your horse.

“Reframing my ‘why’ has helped. I love competing, but enjoying my horse as a whole means not putting too much weight on riding alone.”

Miri also emphasises the value of speaking up: “Don’t be alone – because you aren’t. When we are feeling overwhelmed or struggling, reaching out to a friend and acknowledging that things are hard can be healing.”

For riders like Miri, Rhiannon, Mollie and Nicola, mental health has become part of good horsemanship itself.

As Rhiannon puts it: “There’s so much more to time with our horses than being in the saddle. Some days, a cuddle is enough – and your horse might thank you for it.”

Because in the end, our horses care not about our competitive record but rather how gently we show up for them each day. And perhaps that’s the truest definition of success.

Riders encouraged to ‘take a half-halt’ on World Mental Health Day

Riders Minds is encouraging equestrians to “take a half-halt to pause, rebalance and reset” on World Mental Health Day today (10 October).

The charity, which provides free confidential mental health support for riders 24 hours a day, has reminded the horse world that “looking after and protecting your mental health is just as important as caring for your physical wellbeing”.

“We understand that the pressures of life, both in and out of the saddle, can sometimes feel overwhelming. As equestrians, we are often excellent at looking after our horses first, and then putting everyone else before ourselves,” said Sylvia Bruce, mental health expert and Riders Minds website content creator.

“That’s why we’re urging everyone to take a half-halt today to pause, rebalance, reset and refocus on making your own mental health and wellbeing a priority.”

A spokesperson for charity Mind said “mental health is more than a small part of our lives – it’s every moment of every day”.

“It’s a hard day’s work and a catch-up with friends. It’s when you become a parent and the day you lose someone you love. It’s the times you reach out for support and the years you spend on a waiting list. It’s the fight for a mental health system that works and hospitals that are safe,” said the spokesperson.

“Mental health matters on the days when everything happens and the days when nothing happens. When life is busy and unpredictable and when it’s quiet and ordinary too. That’s why we fight every day, to support more people tomorrow.

“10 October is World Mental Health Day, but we want everyone to understand that mental health is important every day. Together we can make sure everyone sees it that way.”

Mindfulness with horses is one of the most powerful training tools you have… and it doesn’t cost a thing

Riding instructor and founder of The Power of Walk, Diana Waters, explains the benefits that can be enjoyed by you – and your horse – by slowing down and learning to be fully present in this article on how to introduce mindfulness into your equestrian life

As horse people, we often have two things in common: a deep love for horses and extremely full lives. Whether it’s juggling work, mucking out stables, or preparing for the next outing, slowing down can feel hard, almost impossible. But adding mindfulness techniques when you are with your horses can have a profound effect on both of you.

When time is tight and stress levels are high, it’s understandable that a sense of urgency seeps into our time with our horses. It might show up as a lack of patience during grooming, tension during schooling, or simply a feeling of being mentally elsewhere while tackling yard jobs. We all have those days.

But even a short pause can help us reset. Taking a moment to notice your horse’s movement, the sound of their breath, or the feel of their coat under your hand creates a small window of calm and connection. Mindful moments like these have proven health benefits, reducing stress, improving clarity and focus and helping us feel more grounded and calm.

The benefits can extend to your horse too. Horses are highly sensitive to human energy and the more calm, clear, and grounded you are, the safer and more settled your horse is likely to feel. It’s one of the most powerful training tools you have, and it doesn’t cost a thing.

How to introduce mindfulness with horses

Here are three exercises to help you become more present with your horse in your mind, as well as your body.

Breathe with your horse

Breathing is a simple yet powerful way to calm the nervous system and bring ourselves into the present moment. Horses breathe more slowly and deeply than we do, making them natural guides for regulating our own breath. By tuning into your horse’s breathing, you not only calm your body and mind, but this can also strengthen the sense of connection between you.

What you need: Your horse, a headcollar and leadrope, and a quiet spot where your horse feels relaxed and is free from distractions or food.

Time: 3 minutes (or longer if you like)

1. Begin with stillness. Stand beside your horse and place a hand gently on your own chest. Take a few moments to let your body settle and your mind slow down.

2. Tune into your horse. If your horse is comfortable with you doing so, place your hands gently on their ribcage. Pause and feel the gentle rise and fall of their breath beneath your hands. If your horse prefers not to be touched in that area, simply watch the movement of their flank instead.

3. Match your breathing. Let your own breathing begin to follow the rhythm of your horse’s breath, inhaling as they inhale, exhaling as they exhale. Keep the breath soft and relaxed.

4. Notice the shift. As your breath begins to align, you may notice a sense of calm spreading through your body. You may also find your horse becoming more settled and still. Allow yourself to stay with the rhythm for a few minutes, simply enjoying the shared quiet.

Mindful grazing

Spending quiet time beside your horse as they graze can be surprisingly calming. Horses naturally move slowly and deliberately when grazing, and this simple rhythm can help settle your nervous system too. Mirroring your horse’s movements is a gentle way to tune in and feel more present.

What you need: Your horse, a grassy area, and a headcollar and leadrope. Alternatively you can do this with your horse loose in the field if it’s safe to do so.

Time: 3–5 minutes

Instructions

1. Stand beside your horse while they graze. Take a few calm, steady breaths. Let your shoulders drop and soften your focus.

2. Watch their front feet. Try to match your steps with theirs—when they take a step forward, you do too. You might find they step in a rhythm that’s easy to follow.

3. Notice their grazing pattern. Do they eat in an arc? Favour one side? Try gently moving your head as they do. This soft mirroring helps you stay connected to the moment.

4. Stay relaxed. There’s no pressure to “get it right”. If your horse walks away, either follow at their pace or let them be. You can always try again later.

5. Reflect on how you feel. After a few minutes, pause and notice any changes in your own body or state of mind – is your breathing calmer? Are you feeling less tension in your body? Or have you felt a shift in focus? Don’t place judgement on these changes, simply notice and acknowledge them.

Mindful grooming

Grooming can be a valuable opportunity to slow down, connect, and tune in with your horse. Mindful grooming is about shifting your focus from getting the job done to being fully present, observing your horse’s responses, noticing their body, and allowing both of you to settle into a calmer state together.

What you need: A grooming kit, your horse in a safe space and ideally a quiet environment without too many distractions.

Time: 10 minutes (or longer if you can)

Instructions

1. Take a moment before you start. Stand quietly by your horse for around 20 seconds. Notice your breath, soften your shoulders, and let go of any tendency to rush or tension in your body. This helps you arrive fully in the moment.

2. Begin with intention. As you reach for the brush, remind yourself this isn’t just about getting the job done. It’s a chance to check in with your horse and yourself.

3. Focus on the physical connection. As you groom, pay attention to the feel of the brush in your hand, the texture of the coat, and how your horse responds. Notice areas where they lean in, twitch or flinch. Take your time.

4. Match your breathing to the rhythm of your grooming. Try to breathe slowly and evenly. Let your breathing guide your strokes. If you catch your thoughts drifting, gently return your focus to the present moment.

5. Stay observant. Use this time to scan your horse’s body for any changes—tight muscles, heat, swelling, or signs of soreness. This can help you spot issues early and adapt your training accordingly.

6. Finish softly. When you’re done, take another slow breath. You might place your hand gently on your horse’s neck or shoulder and just stand with them for a few seconds before moving on.

Horse world celebrates our sense of community during Mental Health Awareness Week

The equestrian world has been praised as somewhere that can offer a safe space for riders struggling with mental health.

The theme of this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week (12–18 May) is community, and UK charity the Mental Health Foundation said being a part of a safe, positive community is “vital for our mental health and wellbeing”.

“We thrive when we have strong connections with other people and supportive communities that remind us we are not alone. Communities can provide a sense of belonging, safety, support in hard times and give us a sense of purpose,” said a spokesperson for the foundation.

Katie Turner, yard manager of Brookhouse Farm Riding School in the West Midlands, told H&H riding schools can provide a “safe space” for adults and children to be themselves.

“After Covid, a lot of people were struggling and we found that they would come here and talk to us because it is their happy place, there’s no stress here. They get to be with the animals they love and talk to people they get along with,” she said, adding that a group of teenagers at the yard has taken part in a new “ice bucket challenge”, the #SpeakYourMIND campaign, launched by the University of South Carolina’s Mental Illness Needs Discussion club.

“We’ve seen a change in young people over the years, too,” she said. “More are struggling with their mental health, but when they come here they can be children again. We’re an outlet from the pressures of school and social media. When they come to the riding school, they don’t need to look a certain way – they’re with their friends and their favourite ponies, and you hear them laughing and joking and enjoying each other’s company.”

British Dressage (BD) is supporting Mental Health Awareness Week and has been running Be Kind Month (16 April–18 May), to encourage members to “be there for one another, win, lose or draw”.

“Mental health is inextricably linked to kindness, so this topic has been prominent throughout the Be Kind Month campaign,” BD chief executive Jason Brautigam told H&H.

“Throughout Mental Health Awareness Week, we will be sharing information to provide advice on dealing with the stresses, pressures and anxieties of everyday life, alongside caring for and competing horses.”

BD is supporting the Mental Health Foundation’s Wear it Green Day on 15 May, an initiative to raise funds and awareness for the charity.

“Mental health is high on our agenda, not just throughout Be Kind Month, but all year round. Riders are encouraged to access the BD learning hub, where we’ve launched a mental health module, produced in collaboration with Riders Minds,” said Mr Brautigam.

“We will be adding further development and learning content over coming months, as well as continuing to spread the message about how small acts of kindness can have a massive impact on mental health.”

In a new Riders Minds survey, the charity reported that 93.3% of 210 respondents have experienced kindness in the equestrian community, and 66.5% have felt positively supported. But “more concerningly”, 80.5% have experienced poor mental health in the last three years and only 35.4% sought professional support for this.

“Seeing that people do feel positively supported, and the high levels of kindness experienced within the equestrian community, is super-encouraging given we often anecdotally hear how challenging the industry and its community can be,” said Riders Minds mental health consultant Sylvia Bruce.

“However, those results for people experiencing poor mental health are high, exceeding the commonly cited one-in-four statistic. While that’s worrying, what’s intriguing is that only a minority of those sought professional support and that warrants further exploration.”

Is helping people through horses ‘quirky and eccentric or part of the answer’?

A 10-year-old boy stood up in front of hundreds of people to explain how horses have changed his life and “helped me in so many ways”.

James Brooks, and his father Andrew, spoke at the National Equine Forum on 6 March, as part of a session on the value of equine-assisted services.

“I love horses,” James said. “Riding is my favourite thing to do. When I was younger, school was really hard for me. I have dyslexia, which makes it difficult to read and write, but when I’m on a horse, everything changes. They don’t care if I have trouble reading, they judge me for who I am.”

James said riding makes him feel strong, and that he enjoys caring for horses and has made friends at the yard.

“Horses have helped me in so many ways,” he said. “I’m confident, I don’t get as anxious. I’m really grateful for the Changing Lives Through Horses (CLTH) programme. It has helped me discover my passion for horses and learn so much about myself.”

Mr Brooks told guests he wanted to share the family’s “remarkable journey” with horses and the “transformative power” of equine-facilitated learning.

“The decision [to embark on the CLTH programme] opened up a world of possibilities and witnessing James’s growth has been incredible,” he said. “We’ve seen examples where other people within James’s tribe and support mechanism have been able to point out to us sometimes stressors that we wouldn’t be aware of. We could be advised that there were some issues we needed to look at, and see what we could do about.

“Today, I stand before you as an advocate for equine-facilitated learning. I’ve seen first-hand how horses help people like James overcome challenges, and I’ve seen the way it’s built his confidence and developed essential life skills. We’re here to share our story and inspire you to support this incredible field.”

Mr Brooks said James has learnt to set goals, work towards them and withstand setbacks, as well as building relationships and a strong work ethic – and a plan for his future.

“He wants a career in the industry, perhaps as a riding instructor, stable manager, Olympic showjumper!” he said. “We’re committed to supporting whatever aspirations he has.

“James’s journey highlights not only the individual benefits, but the potential for wider social and economic impact. It’s testament to the power of horses – how they will transform lives and inspire people.

“This is a legacy we can create together, a legacy of empowerment, connection and hope.”

Ed Bracher, chair of the Equine Assisted Services Partnership, the sector’s membership body, discussed the growing contribution and importance of such projects.

“Why is this important? Why is it needed?” he said. “It’s well reported that there’s a crisis in social care in the UK; mental health care, dementia, depression. [There are] ever-decreasing, in my view, opportunities for people with different needs to access contact with animals or the outside, the general benefits those bring, and a lack of opportunity for many people to get the support they need.

“We’re doing some work in Oxford and currently the waiting list for an 18-year-old with a mental health condition in Oxford is roughly 18 months, which doesn’t provide much help. I think horses are not the only answer, but they’re very definitely a part of the answer.”

Mr Bracher said horses not only provide support and allow engagement, they facilitate routes for people into other areas.

“When I asked the health secretary, a few years ago, about how to get this more accepted, he said the problem is, what you do is quite quirky and eccentric,”he said. “So there’s a job for all of us to make people realise it’s not quirky and eccentric. It’s effective, it’s sensible and it really works.”

Horses ‘restore boy’s faith in human kindness’ – and save his life

The life of a young man called Charlie has been saved, and his future changed thanks to a rescued horse called Alfie, his “best friend”.

Alfie is one of the equine participants in welfare charity HorseWorld’s Discovery programme, which involves rescued horses and vulnerable young people.

During children’s mental health week (3-9 February), the Bristol charity is “shining a light on the transformative power of horses in supporting young people’s mental well-being”.

“For 12-year-old Charlie, this unique programme has been nothing short of life-saving,” a HorseWorld spokesperson said. “After being out of school for three years due to the challenges of autism and ADHD, Charlie was struggling with his mental health and had even felt suicidal. But that all changed when he began attending Discovery sessions at HorseWorld in January 2024.”

Charlie’s mother Rachel said the programme had “given him his life back”.

“He was really poorly from lots of trauma and unmet SEND needs in school. He had been failed time and time again by adults and therapists, but since coming here, he’s gained confidence, a purpose, and a reason to be alive. He has developed an absolute love for horses and animals, and he’s formed a great bond with Kayleigh and the other facilitators. It has restored his faith in human kindness.”

Charlie has a particularly close relationship with Archie, the spokesperson said.

“Archie is my best friend,” said Charlie. “He understands people, I think. And he loves hugs.

“At first, I was a bit scared of horses, but then I found a love for them. One day, I let go of Archie’s lead rope, and he just followed me without me calling him. It was amazing!”

Charlie is now preparing to move to an independent specialist school, which Rachel had never thought would be possible.

“There is a farm at his new school, and everything he has learned at HorseWorld will help him settle in,” she said. “This programme has completely changed his future.”

Some 300 young people take part in the Discovery programme every year. The aim is to provide a “safe, non-judgmental space where they can develop confidence, build relationships, and improve their mental well-being”.

“The programme is particularly vital for those struggling with social, emotional, and mental health challenges or at risk of exclusion,” the spokesperson said.

Kayleigh Sivier, a Discovery facilitator who has worked closely with Charlie, was recently nominated by him for a SEND (special educational needs and disabilities) superstar award, for education professionals who make a profound difference.

“I nominated Kayleigh because she is one of the kindest and funniest people I know,” Charlie said. “She helps me feel confident, independent, and she believes in me.”

The struggles of balancing work, horses and family – more awareness needed as riders experience burnout

More awareness of burnout in those who work full-time and have horses outside their jobs is needed – as many riders will not seek help for fear of being judged.

These are the conclusions of Megan Lane, who studied burnout in a small sample of women who work at least 30 hours per week and kept horses on DIY or part livery, for her dissertation in sport and exercise psychology.

Equestrian mental health charity Riders Minds helped find the 20 participants in Megan’s study, who took part in interviews and completed a questionnaire, in an area she intends to take further.

“I would love for this to be accessible and seen by others,” she told H&H. “A key finding was that more knowledge is needed around burnout to challenge the negative perception of it in the industry, which reduced help-seeking for fear of being seen as weak or being judged.”

In her dissertation, Megan explains that sports burnout is seen as a “multidimensional cognitive affective syndrome, characterised by emotional and physical exhaustion, reduced accomplishment, and sport devaluation”, and that it can lead to “performance decrements, decreased motivation, sport dropout, social issues, anxiety, depression, illness, and substance abuse”.

Add to that the need to cater for horses’ needs as well as their own, and the time and money involved in owning horses, the demands on equestrian athletes are high.

“The analysis revealed that many of the participants were struggling with the stress from balancing equestrian demands, work, and family commitments with the financial burden of horse ownership adding stress and contributing to burnout,” a Riders Minds spokesperson said.

“One of the more alarming observations from the survey was the negative perception of burnout within the equestrian industry, which reduced any help-seeking, for fear of being judged or seen as weak.”

There has been little research into burnout in “dual-career” equestrians, who keep horses as well as working full-time. This study found over 47% of the riders were experiencing it.

“The study aims to highlight the awareness and identification of burnout and reduce the negative stigma to increase the number of people willing to ask for help,” the spokesperson said.

“Burnout can cause a range of physical and emotional clinic signs, including a lack of motivation and energy, feelings of overwhelm, procrastinating, withdrawing from social circles and changes in sleep patterns.”

Megan, who is also a rider, said she has seen riders struggling, especially those who also work.

“I myself have struggled with burnout, so it made sense for me to use the opportunity I had to conduct research into an area I am passionate about,” she said.

“I want to thank every participant for being so open and honest with me about a difficult topic during the interviews. It was really eye-opening for me, and I hope that my dissertation is the start of greater awareness of burnout for equestrians, to which I hope to contribute through further research.”

Some participants in the study said greater awareness would help riders as some had not realised they were experiencing burnout at the time. They also “highlighted a want for professional and well-known equestrians to be more open about their mental health, to show individuals that struggles and burnout are common in the industry, and reduce the negative stigma around burnout”.

Why do you lack confidence when riding or handling horses? Five questions to ask yourself

Equestrianism is a wonderful, all-round hobby. Not only does it facilitate outdoor exercise and offer you a number of opportunities to expand your skills, but it also allows you to bond with horses. We could go on about the health benefits of horse riding, and the many boosts it can bring to your mental wellbeing, too. However, if you’re lacking confidence around horses, you might be struggling to find the positives in your equestrian life. What’s more, low confidence doesn’t just affect how we ride – it could hinder horse handling skills, too.

We’re here to say “that’s ok”. It’s perfectly natural to feel worried, frustrated or deflated if your confidence is at a low ebb. To move past these feelings, it could help to dig deeper to understand why your confidence has taken a hit. That way, you can surround yourself with the best support and environment to build yourself back up again.

Are you lacking confidence around horses? Five questions to ask yourself

1. Are you plagued by self-doubt?

Nervous horse riders often question their own ability and stop trusting their skills. This might be in response to a performance setback or achieving an uncharacteristically poor result, a facet of your horse’s management that slipped past your notice or perhaps a habit such as napping creeping in.

It’s important to remember that no one holds all the answers – that’s why there are so many specialist equine professions that each require years of training – and in all likelihood you need a little intervention, reassurance or to brush up on your knowledge. That could be via a veterinary examination of your horse, booking some extra lessons or even enrolling on a management course. Anything that helps empower you in your equestrian life will enhance your self-belief and confidence.

2. Have you had a fearful experience?

A nasty fall, having a horse run away with you or being kicked – these are all frightening, painful and very real experiences that can leave you lacking confidence around horses. It’s natural to be fearful after a frightening episode with a horse, and feeling reluctant to try again is entirely reasonable. It’s hard to fight self-preservation instincts. After all, we have them for very good reasons.

Spending time in your comfort zone will help you find the fun again. It could help remind you that, most of the time, horse riding and ownership go well. This could mean a break from jumping or schooling or indeed riding generally. Why not try some groundwork instead, or find out how to show in-hand?

If you’ve had a frightening experience with your horse on the ground, ensure you’re setting yourself up for handling with a hard hat, gloves and suitable footwear. You can ask for help from an expert or a knowledgeable, confident friend on the yard. Disclose any undesired behaviour your horse exhibits to fully inform the person helping you.

3. Are you feeling the effects of broader personal issues?

While there are countless reported mental health benefits of horse riding, it can feel impossible to appreciate them if things aren’t right elsewhere in life. This could be due to stress at work or home, low mood or perhaps health-related. In fact, British Equestrian has covered the health of female riders extensively and how common menopause symptoms can affect mental and physical health.

Those who have recently undergone a significant life change such as having children, or suffered a close family bereavement, may also find this affects their confidence. In cases like these, identifying the trigger and then sharing your experiences with others and working with experts to help you get back on track may be the best way forward.

4. Is your horse the best match?

It can be really hard to admit things aren’t working out with a horse. Owners put so much time, effort and finances in to their horses, all of which serves to form a close emotional bond in many cases.

It’s never easy to part ways with a horse. But, if you’ve never quite gelled, it can be extremely satisfying to place a horse in a home where he’ll thrive. Then, you can return to finding your perfect partner with renewed vigour – check out our ultimate guide to buying a horse.

On the flipside, if you decide to sell a horse you really like but isn’t your match under saddle, you can be left feeling dispirited that you were unable to make it work. However, it’s not a reflection on you – the two of you simply weren’t a match. If you don’t feel ready to begin searching for another horse, it’s perfectly sensible to take a break, regroup and find your way back to enjoying horses again without the pressure of finding “the one”.

5. Does your yard provide a positive environment?

Just as some horses aren’t the right fit for you, so too with some livery yards. It might be that the way the yard is managed doesn’t suit you or your horse, you struggle to get on with the owner or manager, or there are fellow liveries that you find disagreeable.

Truth is, a bad vibe can throw anyone off. If you find yourself feeling especially relieved if you arrive at the yard to discover you’re the only one there – or start avoiding peak times – it might be a sign things aren’t right. It may be that a frank conversation or two could put get things on the right track. If not, a yard move might be your best bet.

Try not to rush into a move. Make a list of priorities and questions, do your research and ensure you visit the yards when you are looking for your ideal livery yard. Word-of-mouth recommendations are helpful when you are trying to get a feel for a place. Better to take your time and move once than do so in haste and end up in another uncomfortable situation.

Can horses help reduce anxiety? Yes – plus four other ways riding benefits mental health

When we discuss the health benefits of horse riding, we hear a lot about how time spent in the saddle improves physical wellbeing, but another major positive are the mental health benefits of horse riding

Multiple studies have shown interaction with horses can help with mental health conditions. For instance, horses can help reduce anxiety, and symptoms of depression, and could even assist in long-term mental fitness. According to the British Horse Society (BHS), horse riding could potentially lower the chance of suffering from dementia by up to 30%.

It’s not unusual for equestrians to refer to their horse as their therapist. And, with a bank of research showing that horses and horse riding benefit mental health, they might be on to something. But how specifically do horses help us? Well, the list is practically endless, and it can depend on the individual. For example, for adults with complex needs the mental health benefits of horse riding can range from increased self-confidence to aiding independence and organisational skills. As such, the power of horses to transform lives should not be underestimated.

5 mental health benefits of horse riding

1. Horses reduce anxiety

Anyone who has ridden or cared for an equine knows doing so leaves little room to dwell on anything else. This practice of being in the moment has another name: mindfulness. It involves being aware of what you can see, hear and feel in that moment – something that comes naturally on horseback. The NHS recommends practising mindfulness to reduce stress and anxiety – and some NHS nurses even enlist the help of donkeys to practise mindfulness.

Other studies have found that riding can reduce heart rates, guiding riders in to a more tranquil state of being. One study found that 30 minutes of horse trekking helped riders shift in to parasympathetic nervous system control – leaving the “fight or flight” state and entering a state of relaxation and lowered anxiety. Additionally, Hoagwood et al. (2022) found that equine-assisted therapy can help boost oxytocin (a “feel-good hormone”) and lower cortisol, which is associated with stress and anxiety.

2. Horses help us regulate emotions

Sometimes, big and uncomfortable feelings are difficult to sit with. However, horses require us to operate clearly and calmly around them to help maintain their level-headedness. It’s something exposure to horses teaches you over time, and a skill that can be transformative in all life settings.

Multiple studies have shown that equine activities lead to the development of better coping skills and the ability to self-regulate emotions. What’s more, a qualitative study by Højgaard-Bøytler & Argentzell (2023) found that victims of abuse were better able to connect with their emotions through bodily awareness while riding, and handle these emotions more effectively.

3. Horses help with depression

Exercise is well-documented as a positive way to combat depression. A study by Farmer et al. (1998) indicated that physical inactivity may be a risk factor in symptoms of depression. Meanwhile, Dimeo et al. (2001) found that aerobic exercise led to an improvement in mood for patients with major depressive disorders.

But exercise with horses has another layer of meaning. Riding benefits both horse and rider with healthy exercise, but so too do physical equine activities such as grooming and leading. For example, Frederick et al. (2015), found that a five-week equine-assisted learning programme lead to reduced levels of depression and increased hope in ‘at-risk’ adolescents. In the saddle or out of it, active exercise around horses is a real mood-booster.

4. Horses help reduce negative thoughts

We already know horses improve anxiety, but they also help banish negative thought patterns. A recent survey questionnaire from the BHS showed that for 80% of respondents, riding makes them feel either ‘quite a lot’ or ‘extremely’ cheerful, happy and relaxed. Furthermore, a 2019 study that asked participants to use a single word to describe their experience of leading a horse through an obstacle course received 98% positive responses.

Another study found that negative thoughts associated with PTSD were significantly reduced for military veterans participating in equine-assisted psychotherapy.

5. People who ride horses are happier overall

The far-reaching benefits of horse riding and horse care contribute to a happier life on many levels. One way this is evidenced is in the satisfaction gained from equine responses to owners’ care decisions. Another study showed an increase in overall satisfaction and happiness in participants who took part in a three-day hippotherapy course.

Not only do horses improve anxiety and depression, but they also allow us to harness a stronger connection with nature. Numerous studies have shown that time spent in the natural world buttresses human mental health, and horses help us make that meaningful link with green spaces. This gives horse riders an emotional attachment to their surroundings, and BHS research shows connection with nature is a motivator for riders.

Humans are social animals and this study on individuals with complex needs shows that horses can facilitate improved social connectedness. We see this played out on livery yards and at competition and equestrian centres – every day, horses enrich our social lives by helping us form bonds with like-minded people.

Calls for riders to talk to – not about – each other on World Mental Health Day

Mental health in the workplace has come into the spotlight again, as equestrians are encouraged to seek support and talk to each other.

Workplace mental health is the theme of the World Federation for Mental Health’s annual World Mental Health Day today (10 October). The charity said that 15% of UK workers are estimated to have a mental health condition, 875,000 suffered from work-related stress, depression and anxiety in 2022/23 and the fifth most common reason for sickness absence from work is mental health.

“There are many things that contribute to a mentally healthy workplace, from providing staff training on mental health to tackling discrimination and bullying. Importantly, a mentally healthy workplace supports open conversations about mental health,” said a spokesperson for the charity.

Equestrian Employers Association president Tullis Matson told H&H that ensuring workplaces meet good employment requirements not only provides compliance with legal obligations, but can help in managing mental health issues at work.

“By following good employment practice, such as providing employees with contracts and adhering to national minimum wage amounts, stress and anxiety at work can be reduced for both employees and employers,” he said.

“As an employer, you also have a responsibility to operate with an open door and listening management approach. I ensure that my team understand who their line manager is, as well as how seriously we take mental wellbeing, and within our staff handbook our processes are clear in relation to this.

“Both these actions significantly benefit the atmosphere at our establishment and assist with creating a calmer and happier environment.”

Mental health is a key talking point in the veterinary industry, and the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) has updated its mental health online resources, which include podcasts, continuing professional development resources and advice on preventing injuries at work and eating healthily.

BEVA council member Sophie Eaden told H&H vets can experience “big extremes, emotionally and mentally” during their working day.

“You can go from putting down an elderly pony to a vetting. Ultimately, you’re in the car on your own, so you really have to have quite a lot of resilience to navigate those emotionally and mentally challenging situations and then be able to compose yourself and be prepared for the next call,” she said.

“I think we dismiss that quite a lot as a profession because it’s just what we’ve always done and what we always do, and sometimes we don’t necessarily recognise the toll it’s taking. We hope that by sharing these resources, BEVA members have got things they can turn to when things are feeling a bit challenging and piling up.”

Mental health charity Riders Minds is encouraging the equestrian community to “share a cup of tea and talk” on World Mental Health Day, in a campaign to “inspire to ask, care and talk to those around them”.

Riders Minds chair and founder Victoria Wright said: “There is so much time in the horse world spent talking about one another rather than to each other. It’s time to change that and unite. Let’s have conversations on the yard that discuss ideas and are positive.

“Take the time to ask how others are doing today and be the reason they smile and you smile too. Life is too short to waste time with negativity, it’s down to us personally to create positivity.”

The charity also encourages people to “ask twice”, if they suspect someone might be struggling with their mental health.

“The simple act of asking again, with interest, can help someone to open up for the first time,” added a Riders Minds spokesperson.

‘A smile can hide a thousand wounds’: riders urged to unite in support of each other

Equestrians all over the world are being encouraged to unite on the first Riders Minds Day on 9 August, to “break down barriers and show each other support”.

Mental health charity Riders Minds would like as many people as possible to wear something purple and ACT (ask, care, talk), to promote positivity throughout the equestrian community.

Victoria Wright, founder and chair of Riders Minds, said: “It’s time to unite, it’s time to stop talking about one another and start talking to each other. Always be humble, always be understanding and always be kind.

“The brightest smiles can hide a thousand wounds and people can be fighting inner battles you know absolutely nothing about.”

Mrs Wright added that everyone is unique and “we weren’t born to be the same”.

“On 9 August we’re asking all equestrians to come together from all walks of life and ACT on that day,” she said. “Start a conversation on a yard, smile at someone you wouldn’t normally talk to, wear something purple, and for once let us all be united by the same passion. We all have the power to be that leg up that somebody might desperately need.”

The charity is also looking for fundraisers throughout August to help bring equestrians together, and for people to get involved with the charity’s work.

This includes “sharing the message”, that it is ok to talk mental health, to seek support when you need it, and not to be ok. Riders are encouraged to know others’ signs of stress and behaviour changes, as they do with their horses, to share their stories and help reduce the stigma around mental health, and to listen if someone opens up.

Adam Cromarty discusses supporting mental health with the knowledge that neurodivergent people can thrive in a sporting environment

The theme for this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week, running from 13 May, is “Moving more for our mental health’. In our sport we move a lot, so maybe it’s a good opportunity to stop, take a breath and see how we and those around us are doing.

Showjumping has a sense of community, but it can also be lonely. Travelling, whether locally or internationally takes you away from family and a sense of stability. It’s an emotionally challenging sport and while the top end may look glamorous, even the best riders in the world are under immense pressure to continually produce good results.

Losing an owner or sponsor could take you from the top to the bottom. The odds are stacked against you and the statistics show that you lose more than you win. Add in the financial stress with the cost of competing and showjumping is definitely an at-risk sport for anxiety. The training, mental build-up and warm-up is substantial. We’ve all felt that 200-word-a-minute inner dialogue at the in-gate.

Other sports offer a chance to settle in once in the competition arena, whether it be during a eight-minute dressage test or a 90-minute football match. Showjumping offers us about a 75-second release. Then there’s the internal debrief after you cross the finish line.

Over the years, the taboo around mental health has dissipated. Many of the world’s top riders now look to professionals to help learn techniques and mechanisms. From skills used to stay positive during less successful periods to performance-enhancing tools.

I’ve always had an interest in the human brain and how it works. My time at school was pretty terrible. It wasn’t until I was at university that I found out I had dyslexia. Then, during lockdown, I was recording something with comedian, impressionist and horse show dad Rory Bremner. We ended up discussing attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and I could relate to many of his symptoms. He suggested I get tested. A couple of weeks later, I had a diagnosis, a large amount of clarity and something in common with Justin Timberlake.

Seeing ADHA as a superpower

Given the work I do, I see my ADHD as something of a superpower. It allows me to think outside the box, and offers me sharpness, humour and creativity. There are some downsides though. I am constantly looking for my keys, wallet and phone. Some social situations can be draining and focusing on anything mundane can be a challenge.

Studies have shown that neurodivergent people tend to drift towards careers that suit their brains and sport is definitely on that list. A testament to this is world number 12, Daniel Coyle. When you watch him you can see an unlimited amount of natural feel, skill and a real hunger to win. You wouldn’t know that he is dyslexic.

If a related distance walks as a very short six strides and the plan is to ride it on five, most people would remember the number and maybe even count the five. For Daniel, he remembers to land and move forward and the five arrives for him. He can be reactive and not worry about the numbers.

Shane Breen is also in the club and writes endless lists as a coping mechanism.

For those who think their children may be neurodivergent, please get them tested. There are so many role models in our sport and a diagnosis can help you support them to achieve their ambitions. The same applies for adults too. Sadly, the wait for an ADHD assessment on the NHS can be over a year but there are private options readily available.

I would like our national federation to do more to support mental health at all levels. Online content and workshops would be well received. At a show, course plans could be published online at the start of the day, with more time to learn them.

Whether it be the state of the world, keyboard warriors or social media commentary, things can seem dark. Let’s remember the importance of empathy and kindness.

16-year-old autistic rider overcomes mental health struggles to impress at Area Festival Championships

Although national titles were on the line at the 2024 Petplan Winter Area Festival Championships – and riders were doing all they could to vie for top honours – the supportive and encouraging environment really re-focussed attention for this writer on why we compete in dressage, and what draws us to the sport.

Namely, that deep connection and trust with the horse that riders can feel between the boards – which, at its best, allows us to set aside our real-world struggles.

This sentiment was perfectly encapsulated by 16-year-old Ruby Kelly and her palomino gelding Sir Nunn’s Just Rudi, who finished eighth in the under-21 novice bronze on 66.59%. The class was won by Lydia Holmes on Caramelle with 71.59%.

Ruby and her family originally bought Rudi in November 2020 to help with the severe anxiety and mental health struggles Ruby was experiencing relating to school and social situations.

“I later received an autism diagnosis, which explained a lot of my struggles with day-to-day life,” says Ruby. “High school is rough enough at the best of times but I found it incredibly hard so I’m now homeschooled, which allows me more time to spend with Rudi.

“Without Rudi, I don’t know how I’d cope – when I’m around him all my worries fade and I’m in the zone with him. I love him to absolute bits. Whether grooming, riding, sitting in the field with him or even mucking out his stable, it’s like a form of therapy.”

Ruby adds that she and the now 13-year-old Rudi tried showjumping, cross-country and showing before realising dressage is where their passion was.

“We started with introductory unaffiliated dressage in April 2021 – it wasn’t the prettiest test but after I had that thrill of trotting down the centre line, I couldn’t stop,” explains Ruby.

Since then the combination has gone on to be prelim dressage to music champions at The Midway Championships at Hartpury and are regular Team Quest under-21 competitors with the West Midlands Dressage Group Bluebirds.

“It’s been a rollercoaster,” says Ruby, who has been helped along the way by Kirsty Imm at Bromyard Equestrian.

“It took a while for me to get used to his little quirks and for both of us to adjust to the gaps in our experience, but we both understand each other. He needs a quiet and patient rider and he has a gentle persona, which helps calm me down when I’m stressed out.”

2024 Winter Area Festival Championships: “To have fun together is our main goal”

“Saying that, the day before the test Rudi was wild – throwing numerous shapes in the exercise ring, which was a bit off-putting but no way was I going to let it take over our achievement of getting there.

“The stewards were lovely helping us have multiple quiet exercise slots to calm us both down and although it wasn’t our best test, we went down the centre line and halted at the end, and that was all I ever wanted.”

Ruby now has her sights set on the Summer Petplan Area Festival Championships – that is once her GCSEs are out of the way – but is keen to keep the experience as fun as possible.

“Although I’m competitive I need to remember where we’ve come from, it’s so easy to get ahead of yourself so I want to stop pressurising myself. To have fun together is our main goal in the long run.”

Ruby’s mum Charlotte adds how proud it makes her to watch Ruby compete: “The incredible bond they have, creates a low-stress, non-judgemental interaction which provides Ruby with a huge amount of self-confidence and belief.

“We never imagined they’d have this magnetic silent connection so in tune with each other’s emotions – it’s captivating to watch.”

‘I’ve never experienced anything like it’: police ‘uplifted’ by spending time with donkeys

A group of police officers came away “uplifted” and relaxed from a wellbeing session with a herd of donkeys.

Residents of The Donkey Sanctuary’s Leeds centre met officers from West Yorkshire Police. The visit was arranged thanks to former police officer Kate Edwards, who joined the Leeds team as an equine assistant this year, and “saw the positive benefit the donkeys could have on the welfare of her former police colleagues”.

Kate, who was a police officer for nearly 20 years, “found that like many of her colleagues, she had sometimes disregarded the importance of her wellbeing and self-care”, a spokesman for the charity said.

Kate added: “From my time in the police, I had first-hand experience of how pressured and mentally draining daily life can become.

“In the dictionary, wellbeing is defined as being comfortable, healthy and happy, and far too often we neglect our mental wellbeing. We can often overlook and fail to recognise our thoughts and feelings, making us miss opportunities to manage the pressures of daily life.

“Now in my new role, I am lucky enough to be able to champion donkeys and the beneficial donkey-assisted activity programmes available at our Leeds sanctuary.”

The officers came in two groups of six, to enjoy a “showcase presentation”, after which they met the herd.

“The groups went on to prepare and take part in elements of a donkey-assisted activity session, followed by some donkey enrichment, allowing everyone to gain an understanding of how valuable a good mental state is to both donkeys and humans,” the spokesman said.

“The morning concluded with each participant taking a donkey on a group mindful walk around the sanctuary’s sensory track.”

One of the officers said this walk was the highlight of the day, as it was “peaceful and allowed me to take in the moment”. Another said: “I was quite nervous and sceptical about our visit, though I quickly realised that donkeys are not the animals I believed them to be. They are so intelligent and emotive.”

A third officer added: “I have never experienced anything like it, it was a delight and it left me feeling uplifted.”

Kate said the sanctuary lives up to its name.

“The Donkey Sanctuary is just that – a safe welcoming place for discovery, learning and empowerment,” she said.” In a high stress job like the police, it can be very difficult for officers to regulate their own mental health, often pouring all their time into helping others and forgetting to look after themselves.

“My friends at West Yorkshire Police gave overwhelmingly positive feedback about how visiting the donkeys helped them find some needed relaxation, and I’m so pleased we were able to offer them the opportunity to take time out from their busy frontline roles.”

‘I didn’t want it to end’: mum walks from Wales to London in late daughter’s memory

The mother of a young rider who took her own life aged 16 has completed a 170-mile walk to London to raise money for and awareness of mental health issues.

Emma Webb towed the almost life-size resin horse aptly named Miles from the David Broome Event Centre in Wales to the ExCeL, where the London International Horse Show (LIHS) is under way.

H&H reported last summer that since Brodie died, in March 2020, Emma had dedicated her life to raising money for charities and trying to help others.

“After losing my beautiful girl I realised that I had two choices; to lie down and admit defeat or to stand up, carry on and fight on to help others,” she said at the time.

Emma wanted to take on a challenge that was relevant to Brodie, so decided to walk to the LIHS, which she and her daughter had visited every year at Olympia, towing Miles.

She left Chepstow on 25 November and arrived at the ExCeL yesterday (13 December), and has already raised over £51,000 for Papyrus Prevention of Young Suicide and Riders Minds.

“It’s more than I ever could have dreamed of,” she told H&H. “It’s just amazing.”

Emma and Miles have faced plenty of challenges en route, not least organisational.

“It’s been so much more complicated than I thought to organise,” she said. “Because of Miles and planning the journey; you can’t just walk 10 miles a day because you can’t get in a taxi to a hotel after that, and trying to get my luggage transferred from one place to the next – but people have been so lovely.”

As horses tend to do, Miles went “lame” twice on the road but once a woman in the area asked her in for coffee, and her engineer husband mended Miles. The second time, a member of the LIHS team was walking with Emma when Miles’ T-bar broke. So Emma’s companion called her husband, who came to the rescue.

“It seems like every barrier we’ve faced, there’s been an angel there, so say ‘It’s ok. We’ll sort it out’,” Emma said. “It feels like two minutes ago that I left, but it also feels like a lifetime.”

Another standout moment of the journey was meeting Prince William, on day 13 of the walk.

“We’d heard he’d seen what we were doing on the news and that he wanted to support it in some way but he literally just jumped out at me on the streets of Slough!” Emma said. “He walked with us for about 25 minutes, and it was an experience I’ll remember forever.

“He was so nice; I didn’t know how to address him and sort of jumped back and said, ‘Oh my gosh’, but he put me at ease straight away and gave me the biggest hug. He said how much mental health means to him, and how glad he was to be able to support what I was doing. It was lovely.”

Other challenges included navigating narrow towpaths, and walking backwards on the narrow path next to parts of the A4 to ensure Miles did not fall into the traffic.

“But I didn’t want it to end,” Emma said. “I feel like Forrest Gump, like I could just go on and on, walking and walking to raise awareness.”

Emma had a break in her walk on 10 December, which would have been Brodie’s 20th birthday; she went back to Wales to raise a glass of Brodie’s favourite prosecco in her memory.

She and Miles will be on a stand at the ExCeL for the duration of the show.

“It makes it a bit easier that it’s not at the same venue, but it is still difficult to go back there,” she said. “The LIHS team has been amazing; they’ve pulled out all the stops. Miles will be on the stand, which is lovely, and I hope people will come and take information and just chat to me about the journey.

“This is has been more than I could have hoped for, to keep Brodie’s memory alive, and keep pushing to make a positive difference to mental health. We have to break down those barriers and I think Miles does that; so many people have come up to talk about their own mental health and I think he’s a lovely conversation starter, and lots of people give him a pat, like he’s a real horse, then start talking. Everyone has low mental wellbeing and it’s OK to reach out and ask for help.”

Jodie Hall McAteer: ‘The glitz and glamour of elite showjumping may appeal on Instagram, but logistically it can prove exhausting’

British showjumper Jodie Hall McAteer is a young star of the sport, regularly competing at five-star level. She rides for GCL team New York Empire. In her latest H&H column, she discusses rider mental health and a change of base for her and her horses

I have just returned from competing in the Global Champions League (GCL) Super Cup Final at the Global Champions Prague Playoffs, where I was the under-25s rider for Georgina Bloomberg’s New York Empire team.

It’s one of the calendar’s most spectacular events, held in a sold-out O2 Arena, and the atmosphere is one of a kind. Being part of the “Walk of Champions” parade alongside some of the best riders in the world is an unforgettable feeling and although I can still feel out of place besides them, it’s remarkable.

It was my third year at the playoffs – I guess you could say I am becoming a veteran! The competition did not quite go our way as my team was knocked out in the quarter finals but I was delighted to take second in Saturday’s feature class with Hardessa, who continued her strong form from Horse of the Year Show.

It’s a rewarding feeling when it all comes together on one of the most prestigious stages in the world and even more so when a partnership starts to be consistent.

It’s not all glitz and glamour

Equestrianism is an all-consuming lifestyle and in showjumping there is no off season. It is not as simple as just putting the racket away. In the last month alone I have travelled to seven different countries, competed at three international shows, two national shows and had about one day to myself to recover from it all!

The glitz and glamour may appeal on Instagram, but logistically it can prove exhausting, not only for me but for everyone else helping to keep the show on the road.

As showjumpers the most common question we ask one another is, “Where are you off to next?” The majority will then reel off a long list of shows they’ve lined up. Sometimes I feel myself getting caught up in the hustle culture of the industry, worrying about where I should be rather than appreciating where I am.

Equestrians can have a long career if we look after ourselves, it is a marathon not a sprint, so it’s essential to go at your own pace.

I was interviewed recently by Horse & Country TV for the Mollie Summerland: Mental Health Awareness programme to discuss how I handle the sport’s inevitable highs and lows. Mental wellbeing is extremely important, and it is refreshing to see more riders sharing their own experience of setbacks and how they overcome them.

In my calendar I like to have some breathing space to train without a countdown to a start bell for a particular class on a particular day. Spending so much time constantly travelling can also induce a severe case of “show sickness”, so it’s nice to refresh and live a life with more to it than just horses.

No place like home

With GCL commitments finished for the year and no World Cups to target, I have made the decision to move my horses back to the UK and work more closely with my family’s stables.

I’ve spent the past three years based with my trainer Ben Schröder at BWG Stables in the Netherlands, and while we’ll continue working together, I’m excited to take on the challenge of thinking for myself more. Alongside learning a system, management and riding, I’ve come away from BWG with the knowledge that it’s more than acceptable to eat cake for breakfast, especially when someone has won or fallen off!

Many British riders have moved to Europe in recent years to work, train and compete overseas but speaking from experience there really is no place like home. Britain is a horse-orientated country with strong professional and upcoming riders. It’s unfortunate that many feel obliged to leave their lives here in attempts to better themselves. I hope this is something that can change and the opportunity to develop becomes more accessible on home soil, but that is a subject for next time!

Riders speak out as bullying affects three in four people in the horse world

We must come together as bullying has no place in equestrianism.

This is the message in response to research that found 76% of people in the industry have been bullied – and 85% have witnessed it.

Mental health charity Riders Minds has released the results of its survey in conjunction with anti-bullying week (13-17 November). The theme of the week this year is “Make a noise about bullying”.

“With the launch of our anti-bullying campaign, we hope to target the issues [in person] or over the internet, by creating a movement that the industry can follow.”

In response to the research findings, Riders Minds has created a resource on its website including information on what bullying is, advice on what to do if you or someone else is being bullied, and support for anyone affected.

Mental health coach and Riders Minds consultant Sylvia Bruce said: “The effect of bullying on mental health is more far-reaching than many realise.

“It’s not only the direct effect on the bullied, who can experience emotional, physical, physiological thoughts and behavioural change, often with devastating effects including suicide, but also the ripple effect on those loved ones supporting the person being bullied, the witnesses, those handling bullying cases, and even the equines if the bullied person’s behaviour and responses change.

“We must come together – bullying has no place in equestrianism.”

Mrs Wright added that as “people need mental health support more than ever”, Riders Minds has extended its services. Equestrians can benefit from instant online counselling support, one-to-one sessions and the continuation of the 24/7 helpline.

“We are proud to be one of the few mental health charities to be able to offer this service,” she said.

Retired equine vet takes on mammoth marathon challenge to support mental health

A retired equine vet ran 38 marathons in 38 days to raise awareness for mental health and suicide prevention in the veterinary profession.

Alice Sheldon took on the mammoth challenge for worldwide charity Not One More Vet (NOMV), which aims to “transform the status of mental wellness within the profession”. She has so far raised $5,257 (£4,332) and created a lasting impact through initiating annual runs to ensure the message and awareness continues to spread for years to come.

She crossed the finish line of her 38th consecutive marathon at Onley Grounds Equestrian Complex on Sunday.

“Physically, I’m fine – mentally, I’m exhausted!” Alice told H&H on Wednesday (11 October).

She said she was inspired by the charity’s “race around the world” challenge, which encourages people to get active, and many people joined her for part of her own mammoth challenge.

“It became a very inclusive thing, which was great – I didn’t want it to be just about my marathons,” she said.

Alice worked in equine practice for 17 years and retired after developing Ménière’s disease, a condition that affects balance. The profession remains close to her heart and she works closely with many vets and vet nurses through her new health and fitness career.

“I wanted to get people talking about it, rather than just sweeping it under the carpet and thinking ‘it will be ok’, until it’s not,” said Alice, who previously practised at Towcester Vets, where her husband, Mike, is a partner.

H&H has previously reported on research showing that vets are at a greater risk than the average population of some mental health issues and suicide.

Alice ran at locations all over the country, including alongside top ultra-runner Jasmin Paris in Edinburgh – where Alice studied veterinary medicine – at Liverpool vet school, and between veterinary practices.

Alice said she was “overwhelmed” with the support she received. As well as donations, friends, family and supporters pulled together to help in other ways – planning routes, running stints alongside her and making dinners to support her in every way they could.

She has already left a lasting legacy at the Royal Dick School in Edinburgh, as the event will return as an annual fun run in future.

“I did a lot of local running as well – there’s a local point-to-point trainer and I would see him on each of his lots!” she said.

“Ultimately, the reason to do this is to inspire humans to be kinder to other humans. Being that listening ear or that person that reaches out to ask, ‘are you ok?’.”

Why riders can be susceptible to mental health problems — and how to take action

Today is World Mental Health Day (10 October) and Andrea Oakes finds out why riders can be particularly susceptible to problems — and how to combat the problem...

1. Winning is rare

According to sport psychologist Michael Caulfield, a former PJA chief executive and a director of Sporting Edge, winning is rare in any equestrian discipline. Ros Canter has triumphed at Badminton, but how often does an eventer take a top title? Even AP McCoy’s record 4,000-plus racing winners came from four or five times as many starts.

“It’s a losing sport,” explains Michael. “You get beaten a lot and you start to question everything: ‘Am I doing it right?’, ‘Am I good enough?’

2. A demanding lifestyle

“The lifestyle is incredibly demanding,” Michael adds. “In other walks of life, you have a pattern, a forecast, but, with horses, it can all so easily go wrong. So much is out of your control — you can put three years into preparing for one day and then on the morning the horse treads on a stone. It’s exhaustingly draining.”

3. You can be relying on luck

Tina Cook, whose international career spanned three decades, knows only too well the dramatic highs and lows of eventing.

“The longer you do it, the more you realise that you need a bit of luck for things to go your way,” she says. “It’s difficult to get to the top and stay there. There are a multitude of things you can get depressed about, such as your riding ability, the quality of your horses, financial support — these things could really get you down. Then there’s the element of your own bravery and what people expect of you. I’m sure many eventers have had frustrating, dark days and asked themselves: ‘Will I ever succeed, or make a living?’

“I’ve been lucky, as I’ve fathomed out a system that works for me,” adds Tina. “There are people out there who will help and there’s a supportive environment at the top. People shouldn’t suffer in silence.”

4. A feeling of isolation

Feelings of isolation are common, according to performance psychologist  Charlie Unwin.

“We are phenomenally social animals,  yet equestrianism is the only sport where people don’t congregate in performance centres to learn, talk and support one another,” he says, adding that sense of progress can soon become distorted with too long working at home alone. “I always encourage top riders to spend a couple of weeks a year in someone else’s yard, even if they stick to their own routine. Just being with other people stimulates release of the hormone oxytocin  and positivity in the brain.”

Another key area that can contribute to negative mood is confusion about our identity — often brought about by the apparently perfect lives of fellow competitors.

“We’ve always known that social comparison is a factor in increased anxiety,” says Charlie. “The difference now is that social media provides a distorted view of others’ achievements and can create a twisted perception of their realities. There’s a normality to what these people experience that is not depicted on Facebook and Twitter.”

6. Financial pressure

“Many dressage riders don’t own their horses, so there’s always the possibility of losing them,” says dressage rider Emile Faurie. “Then there’s the sheer financial pressure. I’ve seen people sell their house to buy a horse, only to lose everything when the horse goes lame.”

When the bad days outnumber the good, where can you turn for help? Here’s how to take action:

Notice the change

“Depression is not a fleeting feeling — you will typically experience a sustained change in emotions or behaviour,” says Dr Philip Hopley of Cognacity, a team of psychiatrists and psychologists offering expertise in high-pressure organisations and sporting environments. “Feeling sad, low, demotivated or anxious for at least two weeks could indicate a problem.”

Try to find a good listening ear such as a trainer, colleague, friend or relative with whom you can discuss your feelings and worries.

Seek professional help

If sessions with a sport psychologist fail to help, you may be suffering from something more than a performance-related issue. Approach your GP, or access professional services if you have private health insurance.

Phone a helpline

It may be easier to speak to an expert in confidence. The new Riders Minds hotline is available, as is the BGA’s Grooms Minds and EEA’s Employers Minds. Racing Welfare also offers an extensive range of services for those seeking help and advice. PJA members can call the Cognacity helpline (www.thepja.co.uk). ‘Even in the darkest times, there is hope’: top riders carry Baton of Hope to support suicide prevention

Top British riders and representatives of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment have thrown their weight behind the “biggest suicide awareness and prevention initiative the UK has ever seen”.

Oliver Townend, Mollie Summerland and Lewis Carrier, along with British Equestrian (BEF) eventing performance manager Dickie Waygood, joined mounted soldiers to carry the Baton of Hope on its last leg.

The unique baton has travelled the UK since 25 June as a “unifying symbol” aimed at reducing any stigma related to mental health issues, encourage conversation and “help people get better at asking questions”. Yesterday (6 July), it arrived in London, and the riders formed a guard of honour along Constitution Hill, The Mall and Horse Guards Parade.

Riders Minds partnered with the Baton of Hope; the equestrian mental health charity’s founder Victoria Wright said it was something “we knew we had to get involved with”.

“The mission of the baton is to bring about change in how we approach the subject of suicide, how we talk about it and how we support those affected by it,” she said.

“It is an honour to have a mounted section of the tour, in which the baton was carried on horseback from Hyde Park into Horse Guards Parade thanks to help of Richard Waygood. This is an important moment for the equestrian industry and we’re proud that Riders Minds and British Equestrian are able to work together to deliver a very important message.”

The baton, and the message it represents, was delivered to the Houses of Parliament that evening.

‘This is my purpose now’: mum of young rider who took her own life to walk 170 miles towing resin horse

The mother of a talented young rider who ended her own life is to walk 170 miles with a resin horse for company – as her purpose now is to help save others.

Emma Webb’s daughter Brodie died aged 16, on 10 March 2020. Since then, Emma has raised thousands in aid of suicide prevention and awareness. She hopes to do the same by walking from the David Broome Event Centre in Wales to the ExCeL in the Docklands, home of the London International Horse Show.

“This is all I want to do now, it keeps me going,” Emma told H&H.

“As a parent nothing can prepare you for such tragedy. For your whole world and everything you live for to be gone within the space of a few hours is beyond comprehensible. At 7pm on 10 March 2020 I still had my beautiful girl by my side, laughing and joking, and by 9.30pm she was gone. My purpose for living, my role of being a mum was just ripped away in a heartbeat and being replaced with only a huge void.

“After losing my beautiful girl I realised that I had two choices; to lie down and admit defeat or to stand up, carry on and fight on to help others.”

Emma and Brodie had spent most of their time together; at the yard and travelling to shows.

“She was very passionate about horses and showjumping and I backed it as much as I could,” Emma said. “We were so, so close; it was just the two of us. What happened was totally unexpected.”

In 2021, Emma walked 285 miles to mark the 285 lives lost to suicide in Wales the previous year, Brodie’s among them.

“That raised thousands, and I also make ‘Horseshoes of hope’. I decorate them, and they’re taken to places where hopefully if people who are struggling see them, they can get support,” she said.

The shoes bear a message telling the finder “You are not alone”, and along with the #DoItForBrodie hashtag, they have QR codes directing the finder to the Do it for Brodie website, with signposts and links to available help and support.

“I thought for ages about what else I could do,” Emma said. “I wanted a challenge, something poignant for Brodie, and the idea came to me to walk to the ExCeL. We used to go to Olympia every year; her birthday was in December and it was the start of the whole Christmas period. December was a lovely month for us, so I thought ‘I’ll walk to London’.

“But then I thought if I walked alone, it wouldn’t raise as much awareness, and that’s when the idea came; I thought I’d drag a big plastic horse with me. I think I may have turned a bit bonkers!”

“She loved going there, and they’re always amazing,” Emma said.

The horse will wear an Equiport rug, as just before Brodie died, she had saved for a “beautiful” show rug made by the company, and this will bear the names of sponsors. The horse will be mounted on wheels to make its journey to London easier.

The details of the Leg on to London walk are yet to be confirmed, as Emma plans to find out how many miles per day she will be able to walk with the horse, and then time her leaving so she will arrive during the London International Horse Show.

“I’ve got a good relationship with the 3 Dads Walking [whose daughters also took their own lives], and when they walked through Wales, they asked for people’s help along the way,” Emma said. “I thought some of the equestrian community might help out and let me stay along the route, and that some people might join me to walk some of the way.

“I hope the horse will survive the journey! It’s heavier than I expected but I’m going to do it. This is my purpose now.”

The walk will raise funds for Riders Minds, and Papyrus (Prevention of Young Suicide).

“There’s still such a stigma around mental health and I want to raise awareness of the barriers, particularly among riders,” Emma said.

“Brodie had quite a following on Instagram and I get messages through it from people who are struggling, and I signpost them to the right places. It’s so sad and I want to help everyone, but I can’t. I just hope this can help; it would mean the world.”

Carl Hester on what can cause poor mental health in dressage riders – and how to tell if you’re affected

We are more aware than ever of the impact of riders’ mental health in dressage and other equestrian sports. Increased awareness and openness around mental health in the horse world is a sign of great progress, but the reality is that many riders are still negatively affected, sometimes without even realising.

No equestrian discipline is immune, but dressage in particular seems to elicit certain mental health struggles among riders, in part due to its nature as a subjective, “judged” sport. Then there is the fact that dressage naturally attracts many people with perfectionist tendencies, all striving to achieve something no one has yet accomplished.

With modern dressage training principles under intense scrutiny, often via social media, and the social licence of horse sport being more precarious than ever, it’s no surprise that emotions run high, and can be damaging.

“Dressage is so particular that its participants tend to attract more criticism, very often from the people inside the sport,” says six-time Olympian Carl Hester. “I think most of us would say that we have been negatively criticised.

“Dressage riders also tend to be more isolated in their training [compared to showjumpers or eventers],” adds Carl, “and a lot of people ride and train on their own, so they don’t have anybody there when things go wrong. I find being a trainer also means being able to listen to riders’ fears and worries around training and competing; what might go wrong, and what others say.

“My plea to everyone in this sport we love is simply to support one another,” he says.

Mental health coach and rider Sylvia Bruce has worked extensively with Riders Minds, the online resource launched in early 2020 by the late eventer and mental health campaigner Matthew Wright and his wife Victoria. Sylvia explains that she has witnessed differing cultures across the equestrian sports that contribute to riders’ experiences, and that it can be hard to detach yourself from the inevitable judgement that dressage demands.

“When it is your performance being judged by another person – as opposed to a showjumping fence being up or down – it all comes down to perception and opinion. But it’s important to separate the person from the performance; it is the performance that is being judged, not the rider – the person – themselves,” she says.

“Mental health is a continuum: positive at one end and poor at the other,” she adds. “Mental health involves all sorts of skills we need, like decision-making and the ability to learn, and can be fantastic when applied positively. But dressage seems to demand that drive for perfection, that perfect 10, when it can feel as though anything else is not good enough. Over time, that can nibble away at a person’s psyche.”

Mental health in equestrian sport: spotting the signs

Sometimes, it can be hard to recognise the creeping signs that your mental health is not optimum, and it’s a fact that most riders spend a lot more time considering their horse’s well-being than they do their own. So, what should we be looking out for?

Sylvia advises riders to learn their own personal “clues” that something is not as it should be. These could involve changes in:

The way you think, for example constant worrying, difficulty concentrating, or becoming increasingly critical of yourself or others
Your mood, such as increased irritability, difficulty relaxing or a lack of energy
Your behaviours – eating more or less than usual, struggling to sleep, developing nervous habits or isolating yourself from others
Your physical health, for example aches and pains, nausea, headaches or palpitations

She also recommends paying close attention to the type of language you use, and how this might change:

Words like “should, ought, must, got to” creeping in – these are limiters that can add negative pressure
Changes in self-talk tone, from encouraging to harsh and angry
Pay attention to the times when you think or say, “Give me a break; I need a moment; my mind’s not on the job.” These thoughts are usually telling you something

Sylvia is also keen to point out that it is important to differentiate between experiencing occasions when our mental health is not where we’d like it to be, which is normal, and signs of a mental illness, such as depression.

“We all have bad days, but these can tip into something more and it’s important to be honest with yourself if this is the case, to ask yourself how long the bad days have been going on for, and importantly, what to do about it,” she says.

Major step forward as riders’ minds to be supported at Badminton

Riders and grooms at Badminton Horse Trials (4–8 May) will benefit from on-site access to mental health and wellbeing support in a “pioneering” step forward.

Riders Minds will provide a hub with a counsellor, and an out-of-hours number to call, for the duration of the event.

Victoria Wright, founder and chair of the mental health charity, said: “This is the first time this has happened in equestrian sport, and it is fantastic the FEI has recognised the importance of facilitating this service and that it is being pioneered by Badminton.

“It’s a huge step forwards to have the acknowledgement from the International Olympic Committee and the FEI, and for the sport to recognise that there is a need for mental health support within all of the equestrian disciplines.”

Badminton final scores

Anna-Louise Mackinnon, British Equestrian’s chief medical officer, said mental health promotion is high on the agenda of the FEI medical committee, of which she is a member.

“Riders Minds and the introduction of mental health support at equestrian events, starting with Badminton, is a great step towards raising awareness and helping to deliver the support that many riders may require.”

There will be set times riders and grooms can access the counsellor, or they can use the hub as a “quiet space”.

Badminton event director Jane Tuckwell said, “We are looking forward to Riders Minds having a presence at Badminton and we are pleased to be supporting their work.”

An FEI spokesman told H&H its medical committee aims to guide national federations (NFs) and event organising committees (OCs) on the need to include mental health first aid in medical coverage plans.

“Some NFs and OCs (such as GBR and Badminton) are already working along these lines,” she said. “The medical committee has assessed the service offered by Riders Minds and considers this organisation as an excellent resource for OCs in the UK.”

Mrs Wright added: “As we approach our third birthday, it is a great testament to the excellent work Riders Minds has been doing and we hope it will encourage even more equestrians to utilise our free resources.”

‘It helps to know that others struggle, too’: Abi Lyle on the power of social media in dressage

It’s fair to say that social media has a mixed reputation when it comes to its use within sport, and especially in horse sport. But there is no denying it has its place, and can bring huge benefits to the equestrian community. One top rider who has amassed an impressive following on social media is Irish international dressage rider Abi Lyle, who is based in Wiltshire.

Abi currently boasts more than 24,000 followers on Instagram, and 53,000 on Facebook. She says she feels “blessed” that social media has always been a positive in her life, and has never become too much for her to handle alongside her riding and competing.

So how can social media be used for positive impact within the equestrian world?

“Where the positives of social media come in is from people sharing, not only their good times, but also the bad. Whenever I heard that other riders struggled with things too, it made me feel so much better,” said Abi on episode 131 of The Horse & Hound Podcast.

“For me, it started because I was feeling a bit lonely, riding on my own. I just started chatting into the camera one day, and saying things about how my rides were going, and it built from there. People seemed to enjoy it.”

Abi points out that the sport of dressage in particular brings with it a sense of perfection, which can have a negative impact on up-and-coming riders in particular, or indeed any rider aspiring to be more like those at the very top of the sport.

“The idea is that you go into the ring and you make it look easy,” she explains. “The essence of dressage is that your horse is supposed to be happy and willing and everything is supposed to look easy. If you watch that representation of it, in someone doing a very good test, it can be easy to assume that’s what it looks like all the time, and it’s very unlikely that it does.”

Abi is one of Ireland’s most successful international riders, who competed at the World Dressage Championships earlier this year with her top horse Giraldo, and she is keen to present an honest image of her life online.

“I get on some days and I feel like my legs are everywhere and I can’t sit. But we all have days like that,” she says.

‘Coaching for change’: trainers asked to come together to support mental health

Equestrian coaches are being asked to come together for a new campaign to raise awareness of the importance of speaking about mental health.

Riders Minds is seeking 1,000 trainers to take part in the “coaching for change” campaign next month. Each is asked to donate an amount of time of their choice, by organising a training clinic, with the proceeds going to the charity.

Riders Minds was founded in 2019 by the late eventer Matthew Wright and his wife Victoria, with support from a number of companies, and with the British Grooms Association and Equestrian Employers Association acting as consultants. The award-winning organisation, which gained charitable status in February 2022, provides a free online resource designed to improve and support the mental health and wellbeing of equestrians across the sport.

A Riders Minds spokesman said the new campaign, which coincides with World Mental Health Day on 10 October, will also raise awareness of the importance of speaking about mental health, and the support available through the charity’s website, text line and free confidential phone service.

“We are incredibly proud of the work that Riders Minds has done so far, but we know that there are still some equestrians who either don’t know about us, or feel that they can’t reach out,” he said.

“Coaches are quite often a centre point in their own community, and with their help we can continue to and let even more people know about the resources that are available to all.”

The charity asks that coaches are fully insured – and the sessions can take place at any point during October, ridden, on the ground, or via online learning, in any equestrian sphere.

Government urged to invest in riding along with walking and cycling

Calls have been made for equestrian activities to be included in “social prescribing”, as new funding is announced for walking and cycling.

The Government’s Department for Transport (DfT) announced last month that 11 local authorities in England will benefit from £12.7m funding, which will be used for pilot projects including cycle training, bike loans and walking groups. The pilot is part of the Government’s aim to “evaluate the impact of cycling and walking on an individual’s health, such as reduced GP appointments and reliance on mediation due to more physical activity”.

Transport, active travel and health officials will work together towards a “whole systems approach to health improvement and tackling health disparities”.

Equestrian activities are not included in the pilot projects, but a spokesman for the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) told H&H the charity “welcomes” the funding and is “encouraged” to see social prescribing being invested in. As part of the RDA’s new strategy (news, 31 March) the charity announced plans to recognise the role the RDA could play in social prescribing.

“The concept is definitely gathering pace in England, with recent pilot schemes to connect people with the natural environment, and this latest investment in prescribing walking and cycling to benefit mental health and wellbeing,” said the spokesman.

“In terms of our participants, we would urge the government to look at the benefits of RDA activities and consider including riding in any expansion of this pilot project. In the immediate term, the biggest opportunity we have identified would involve GPs effectively ‘prescribing’ volunteering with RDA, to help tackle elements of mental and physical wellbeing that might otherwise involve the use of medication. Our report, Horses, Health and Happiness demonstrated that volunteering with RDA delivers a range of benefits: overcoming isolation, boosting mental health, improving physical health and developing knowledge and skills.”

The British Horse Society runs the Changing Lives through Horses scheme, aimed at helping young people expand skills and knowledge in an “alternative education setting”.

“Working with horses can hold a real benefit and can be a great way to connect people with their community. Their non-judgemental nature makes them the perfect companion, not to mention the opportunity they provide to help boost a person’s mental and physical wellbeing,” said the scheme’s head Alison Blackmore.

Rediscovering the love: rider who survived mental illness saves horse written off by vets

An eventer who returned from the brink, describing his mental illness as “death with a heartbeat”, has come full circle to rediscover his fundamental love of horses, and save one who was written off the same way he was.

Tom Robinson, who won the 1996 national junior championship when he was 17, and was on the gold medal-winning British team at the junior European Championships the same year, spoke to H&H last year about his desire to help others, and prevent anyone else going through such debilitating illness.

He writes a blog and is working towards publication of the book he has written about his experiences, Dying to Stay Alive! But in the past 18 months, he has recovered still further, to the point he has been reunited with a horse from his past.

“I went into horses from a young age because I loved them,” he said. “But, and I think this happens to a lot of competitors, I became so fixed on the business; earning money, keeping owners, winning medals, that I lost the love for it.

“I lost sight of the reason I’d gone into it, the love for horses, but now I’ve gone full circle. I adore looking after them.”

Tom said Something Funny (Ed), who won a bronze medal in the seven-year-old championships at Le Lion nearly 20 years ago, is still with him, and one of the horses he loves taking care of.

“He had a terrible tendon injury, at the same time my life was falling apart,” he said. “We retired him but always kept him because we loved him and he’s part of the family. Then he had colic surgery, and was given a 30% chance of survival, but he’s still here, and incredibly well.”

Another horse Tom has at home is Buddy, an “amazing” hunter who had been on loan for some years.

“I got to the point where I had no interest in horses or riding, or anything,” he said. “I didn’t think I’d survive. When I was really ill, I had to give up eventing as I couldn’t get out of bed, so guttingly, I loaned him out. But this year, they said he’d been having nosebleeds, it was a horrendous picture that was painted, and that the vet said he’d have to be put down.

“I rushed over to see him and he looked amazing. I said ‘No way are you putting this horse down’. So I brought him home.”

Tom said vets told him Buddy had heart issues, and his prognosis was not good. But after a few months, vet checks showed he had improved.

“I was written off by the medical profession; the NHS told me there was nothing more they could do for me, and if I hadn’t found one amazing private doctor, there’s no way I’d be here now,” he said. “So when I heard my horse had to be shot, and the medical profession had given up on him too, it affected me very personally.”

Tom said that now, seeing Buddy well and happy, is the source of great happiness.

He added that he wants to make clear the difference between mental health and mental illness, and although as has been shown countless times, horses can be of huge benefit to mental health, when he had a serious mental illness, “nothing was enough”.

“I was never this person when I was eventing,” he said. “I saw the stable management as a necessary evil; I didn’t enjoy it particularly, it was all about riding, training, getting better. Now, I love getting up at 6.30am, going out there, mucking out; I’m that person now, not even a happy hacker but I just adore looking after them.”

Tom added that although he will “never say never” about eventing again, he has other priorities, such as getting his book published, and trying to help other aspiring writers through the maze of that process.

“Losing my career felt like a terrible loss but it was an opportunity to go in a different direction,” he said. “There’s no shame in taking a break or a step away, and you can always go back. There’s nothing worse than suffering like that but you can learn from these disasters, and change is often a good thing. There are a ton of people suffering who need to know that it is worth holding on.

“I’ve come full circle and rediscovered the love of the horse, and of life itself.”

Former England footballer Michael Owen will be behind the wheel in the ride and drive competition at Bolesworth International Horse Show (29 June to 3 July) as part of a new partnership agreement.

The former England striker turned racehorse owner/breeder has signed a deal with Bolesworth Estate to attend a number of events in the Cheshire venue’s calendar in 2022.

Michael will be the “headline name” at Bolesworth International. He will join 20-time champion jockey AP McCoy and other celebrities from the sport and entertainment worlds competing in the ride and drive on “speed and style day” (30 June).

“Bolesworth is a fabulous location with a superb event calendar running across the year – where there really is something for everyone to enjoy,” said Michael.

“I am looking forward to the partnership and to be taking part in the first big event at Bolesworth this summer.

“There is real synergy between Bolesworth and [my] Manor House Stables and I hope through this partnership there will be the opportunity to showcase horse racing and racehorse ownership to a new and interested audience.”

Bolesworth Estate managing director Nina Barbour said that Michael, owner of nearby Manor House Stables, is a “familiar face” at Bolesworth.

“It is wonderful that we have now taken this a step further,” said Nina, who added that Michael’s daughter, dressage rider Gemma Owen – who has recently entered the Love Island villa – has competed at Bolesworth in the past.

“I am really looking forward to welcoming Michael to a host of events throughout the year ahead – and to be competing with him too in our big season launch event.”

Riding a Dream Academy secures funding and expansion

The Riding a Dream Academy has secured three years’ seed funding by the Racing Foundation to expand its programmes following a successful pilot year.

The academy supports young riders aged 14 to 18 from diverse ethnic backgrounds, under-represented communities and urban equestrian centres get involved in racing.

It currently runs the year-long Khadijah Mellah Scholarship for riders, plus a riding-based residential week at the British Racing School (BRS).

A parent of one of the academy students said that the positive impact it has had on her daughter’s life is “immeasurable”.

“Her lifelong dream of training as a jockey has been made possible by this opportunity and I hope she can continue to work towards her goals now that this door has opened,” the parent said. “It has literally changed her life in ways I could not have made possible – I am for ever grateful.”

To date, 60% of the academy’s applicants, and 73% of students in the pilot year, are from diverse ethnic backgrounds. This compares to just 2% of jockeys and between 3 and 5% of individuals who currently go on the industry’s entry-level foundation course.

The academy has also announced that it will add a non-riding residential week to its rosta, catering for large numbers applying who lacked access to horses and sufficient riding experience, as well as regional weeks to take the academy out into communities. All programmes will be delivered by the BRS team.

“Being able to provide amazing opportunities to talented riders and young people with an interest in horse racing from a wide range of communities is at the heart of the academy,” said co-founder Naomi Lawson, who will move from her role of director of communications at Great British Racing to lead the academy.

“We are excited to be able to expand our programmes and reach many more individuals thanks to the Racing Foundation’s funding. The pilot has demonstrated the impact that the academy can have in making racing more diverse and inclusive with our students already working in the industry, applying for the foundation course and taking up other opportunities within the sport.”

ITV Racing’s Oli Bell, who co-founded the academy, said they are “incredibly grateful” to the Racing Foundation for its “enduring support” of the academy and sharing their vision of a more diverse and inclusive sport.

“The foundation has been with us from the start when they helped to fund the original Riding A Dream documentary, which followed Khadijah Mellah’s incredible story [to become the first Muslim woman to participate – and win – a horse race in Britain], through to our pilot year,” he said.

“For us to be in the position to support many other young people from diverse and under-represented backgrounds through their funding is a fitting legacy to all that Khadijah achieved and will help racing identify and support diverse talent from across the country.”

Boodles extends Gold Cup sponsorship after ‘epic’ 2022

Jeweller Boodles is extending its sponsorship of the Cheltenham Gold Cup at the Cheltenham Festival to 2023 and 2024.

Boodles managing director Michael Wainwright said the company’s board had “no hesitation” in extending its association following the success of the 2022 Gold Cup.

“After an epic build-up to this year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup and then a wonderful day for the race itself, capped by the charismatic Rachael Blackmore being the first female jockey to win it, the Boodles board had no hesitation in extending our association by another two years,” he said.

‘Think before you type’: new figures highlight online abuse directed at vets – as suicide prevention study begins

Online abuse directed at vets has been highlighted by new figures – as a study looking at suicide preventive measures in the veterinary workplace is launched.

New figures released by the British Veterinary Association (BVA) have highlighted that online abuse remains a concern across the veterinary industry. Of 99 equine vets who took part in a BVA survey, 30% said they had received online abuse, and 47% of 104 equine vets surveyed had felt intimidated by a client’s language. BVA has since launched the “Respect your vet team – end abuse” campaign, encouraging all animal owners to “think before you type” and consider the impact harassment, trolling and unfair reviews can have.

Mental health campaigner and Equicall equine vet Danny Chambers runs the Facebook support group Veterinary Voices UK – a private group for vets founded in 2017 with fellow vet and mental health advocate Sarah Brown who died later that year – and told H&H online abuse of vets happens “all the time”.

“Online abuse is a double whammy; for many being a vet is not just a job, it’s sort of their whole identity. When you’re getting complained about it’s not just a case of ‘you’ve done a bad job’, they see it as an attack on their very being. And the other side is that feeling of how many people saw the post, or how many agreed? If you’re nervous or lose your confidence you’re not going to do as good a job and it can generate anxiety of being called out to that client again”.

Mr Chambers, who is also a Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons council member and a trustee of charity Vetlife, added that this does not mean genuine client complaints should not be made.

“If there’s a genuine complaint then we can take it on board and improve,” he said. “But there’s a difference between that and someone saying you’ve deliberately done a terrible job and ripped them off, and then a load of people you’ve never met piling on and agreeing.

“Once something goes on social media, often the whole story has changed and a vet can’t go on and reply because we’re not allowed to break GDPR rules and we can’t share clinical notes, so you’ve got to sit there and let it play out. It’s hard to get away from, especially if it’s directly on your own social media.”

IN 2020 H&H reported that mental health in the veterinary industry was “getting worse”, as depression and suicide remained major concerns (news, 19 Nov 2020), and studies have shown vets are at higher risk of serious psychological stress and suicide.

Mr Chambers said suicide in the profession is mutifactorial, but it is important to be clear that client complaints are not being blamed for vets committing suicide. But he said some owners could be more understanding.

“If someone rings at 11pm and you haven’t been to them before and they become angry because you don’t know where their place is or they say another vet usually sees their horse and ‘it’s not good enough’, how are they going to get the best out of someone who might be a new graduate, or doesn’t know the area? It’s that kind of thing that can make what is already a stressful job more stressful,” he said.

Former British Equine Veterinary Association president and Rossdales vet Lucy Grieve agreed with Mr Chambers and said it is about people “being human, and being kind”.

“I don’t think we as vets deserve special treatment, everybody is spinning 10 plates in all walks of life, but it’s just appreciating there’s a lot going on in this kind of job and we’re all human beings,” she told H&H.

“I can think of vets who have been intimidated in person, and I would say that goes on more with equine vets because we’re often on a yard on our own with no one around us on our side.”

Ms Grieves added that because of the nature of the job, equine vets do not get much time to process incidents between calls.

“You can’t just go and have a cup of tea and someone else will take your next consult for you. You’ve got to get back in the car and put on a brave face for the next person,” she said.

“It’s nice when someone appreciates you might be having a bad day or you’re running late, and asks, ‘Are you ok?’ That could make a huge difference to somebody. Showing a bit of kindness and someone recognising you as a human with feelings is all it takes sometimes to pick you back out of that frame of mind.”

THE University of Edinburgh has launched a new project, funded by the university’s business school and veterinary employers across the UK, looking into suicide preventive measures within veterinary workplaces. The work will involve interviewing people who have been affected by veterinary suicide with the aim of understanding how it can be prevented, following which findings will be used to suggest and implement new safety regulations.

Lead researcher Rosie Allister, who is also the Vetlife helpline manager, told H&H when discussing veterinary suicide, an important factor to consider when an occupation has elevated suicide rate is “access to means”; workplace access to methods of suicide. This factor will be looked at in depth in the study.

“This is important to understand because while we know that generally in suicide prevention doing things to make access to means more difficult is effective and reduces deaths, there are things that make that more complicated in vets, including animal welfare considerations and unintended consequences of restriction which might in themselves increase risk,” she told H&H.

“To better understand this we are trying to explore things that influence methods used in suicide attempts, and also how people feel about restrictions of access to means in veterinary workplaces.”

The project will also look at the experiences of those who have lost a veterinary professional to suicide, which have not been included in research before – and the experiences of veterinary professionals who have been suicidal and come back from this. The research is expected to conclude in December, following which the results will be published.

Dr Allister said there are many factors that can influence mental health among vets. These can include unsociable working hours and working on call making home life difficult, burnout, compassion fatigue, the impact of disciplinary procedures, staffing pressures, and the change of expectations on vets.

“We know it can be really difficult for vets to ask for help, and like many people working in rural areas or working in jobs with long hours, it can sometimes be really hard to access help too,” she said.

“Vetlife helpline provides confidential support to everyone in the veterinary community. It is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year. When vets and vet nurses haven’t been able to get help for their mental health we can refer them to our professional Vetlife health support service which can do an assessment with them within five working days, and can help make a plan.”

‘Not just a bang on the head’: mental health campaign encourages riders to ‘re-think concussion’

Riders are being encouraged to “re-think” concussion – and the effects it can have on mental health — in a new awareness campaign.

During national Mental Health Awareness Week (9-13 May), equestrian mental health charity Riders Minds has revealed its new “Head First” campaign.

A Riders Minds spokesman said the project had been launched following the “concerning” results of a study by Charles Owen, which revealed six in 10 riders suffer from depression after a concussion. More than 1,000 riders took part in the study, carried out last year by University of Sussex MSc student Charlotte Ricca, which also found that 30% of riders who suffered from depression went on to continue to suffer from prolonged mental health problems.

As part of the campaign Riders Minds has created the “Head First checker”, a comprehensive tool to allow people to identify any signs of change, including to brain function and mental health, and the early warning signs to look out for. The tool incorporates four key areas; cognitive changes, mood/behaviour, physical signs and altered sleep pattern.

“More than 25% of riders have suffered from depression, and riders who have experienced five or more concussions are twice as likely to suffer from a mental health condition as a result. The importance of protecting our heads and monitoring signs of concussion/mental health is vital,” said Riders Minds chair Victoria Wright.

“We also know that a mental health condition following a head injury does not necessarily occur immediately afterwards, it can take six months to a year after the incident to take effect. The objective of Riders Minds has always been to support the mental health and well-being of all equestrian people and we feel extremely proud that the connection between mental health and head injury has finally been brought to light in the equestrian industry like it has in rugby, American football and other high-impact sports.”

Mental health specialist Sylvia Bruce, who is responsible for the Riders Minds’ website content, added that the campaign aims to get equestrians to “re-think” concussion in horse riders as not “just a bang on the head”.

“It’s a brain injury. And, if our brain is injured, our mind can be injured too, with potential far-reaching implications on our mental health and wellbeing,” she said.

Dark clouds or a bright future? Why the sport must work together on mental health

IT is down to the whole sport to ensure that there is a “bright future” rather than “dark clouds” on the horizon for jockeys’ mental health.

Experts Duncan Law and Cíara Losty spoke at the Injured Jockeys Fund (IJF) conference at Newbury (26 April) about supporting jockeys’ wellbeing and how the industry and those around them have parts to play.

“We are interested in how we can work with the whole system to prevent problems in the first place,” said Dr Law, a consultant clinical psychologist with experience across elite sport and who has worked in partnership with the IJF since 2019.

Dr Losty, who works with all licensed jockeys in Ireland as sport psychologist for the Jockey Pathway and also provided on-site support to the Irish eventing team in Tokyo, shared concerning statistics from a 2020 study into Irish jockeys.

The research found nearly 80% of those surveyed met the criteria for at least one mental health disorder, that 61% reported alcohol misuse, 35% depression, 27% anxiety and 19% psychological disorders.

This compares to between 5% and 35% of Olympic athletes reporting mental health difficulties.

Dr Losty said barriers to jockeys reporting problems include negative perceptions, concern over stigma and career implications, plus not recognising symptoms and not knowing where to seek help.

She added that educating jockeys at a younger age and making it a part of the support structure available, as well as support from friends and family, are all part of removing those barriers and improving mental wellbeing.

“The public discourse of mental health around elite athletes has really changed,” said Dr Losty, a lecturer in applied sport and exercise psychology at Waterford Institute of Technology.

“It really is an area that is in its infancy in comparison to other areas in sport,” she said, giving examples of how much more is known about subjects such as physiology and strength by comparison.

The conference heard that media campaigns and openness from other jockeys also encouraged people to seek help.

Dr Law said elite sport is seeking to move away from the “tear and repair” attitude, where someone is sent off to a professional to be “fixed”, then back into the same environment that contributed or exacerbated their issues. He explained the four-pillar strategy for mental wellbeing among jockeys is: promoting positive wellbeing, early identification, understanding jockeys’ needs in context and appropriate and safe response.

“For a large number of jockeys, racing is a coping strategy as well as a stresser,” he said, giving the example of how injury or disciplinary action have a two-sided impact on wellbeing, being both stressful in themselves and taking away how the jockeys cope.

Looking at statistics, the prevalence of current jockeys experiencing anxiety and depression was far greater than those on the licensing courses coming into the sport.

“But it does leave us with some questions,” said Dr Law.

He queried whether perhaps the industry is selecting fewer jockeys with mental wellbeing problems, or perhaps it is self-selecting, and whether the industry is creating mental health problems or supporting people experiencing these to be able to carry on with the sport they “love and enjoy”, while the Olympic system perhaps does not.

“I think we can allow some cautious optimism,” he said. “The new cohort are really open to talking about mental wellbeing issues and open to help-seeking.”

He added that better, earlier support available – and an improved understanding across the industry of mental wellbeing – are also reasons for that optimism.

“Stigma, we think, is reducing, but we are not absolutely sure about this,” he said, adding that as more people speak out about mental wellbeing, that helps reduce stigma and encourages people to accept help.

“But we suspect there are certain pockets where stigma is still high and strong.

“There may be this brighter future and we are optimistic there is, but we have to be cautious. We have to keep mental wellbeing at the forefront of the agenda in racing in the same way as physical health,” he said, adding that these both need to be prioritised together.

“It is down to all of us to make sure that the future is bright.”

‘I was ready to end it all’: Derby-winning jockey reveals struggle with alcoholism in eye-opening ITV documentary

An eye-opening ITV documentary set to air next week (5 May) charts the story of three-time Derby-winning jockey Johnny Murtagh, now a successful trainer in his native Ireland, who reveals his struggles with alcoholism during a glittering career in the saddle.

At his lowest point, the Irish champion Flat jockey admits he stood on a balcony after drinking heavily abroad and contemplated jumping: “I was ready to end it all,” he says starkly.

It’s a shocking revelation from one of the most charismatic members of the weighing room, but one he says he hopes will encourage others facing similar demons to seek help.

“I was hoping something like this would come along so I could tell my story,” says 51-year-old Johnny of the film that has been three years in the making. “I’d like to think someone will watch this and it might inspire them to reach out.”

Johnny won the Derby three times, in 2000 on Sinndar, 2002 on High Chaparral and 2005 on Motivator, as well as the Guineas and the Prix De L’Arc De Triomphe before turning his hand to training. But away from the racecourse, Johnny’s alcoholism consumed him and he was sacked by trainer John Oxx early on in his riding career.

“After the event we’re all sorry, but you have to help these people before something happens to them,” he says. “The signs should be there.”

Johnny credits his “superwoman” wife Orla and a strong support network of friends for helping to turn his life around and he quit drinking 20 years ago. The mental health of those involved in racing is a subject much more openly discussed nowadays and Johnny hopes that telling his story may help any jockeys or their families in a similar situation to him.

“When I think back to that night [when he wanted to end it all], I wonder how could I have been thinking like that? Imagine all I would have missed,” he says. “My thinking was completely gone by then. So whether it’s a parent or someone you really trust, I’d hope they’d put a hand out and say ‘Listen, this is going on in my life…’

“In your mind you may have built it up to be so bad and often one big thing you can deal with, but it’s the five or six little things that bother you and make you go and do something stupid. So just speaking to someone might change their thinking from where they were to where they need to be.

“There are plenty of bad days [in racing] and it’s not a nice place to be sometimes, sitting at home afterwards.”

In the film, Johnny also talks about how selfish he had to be as a jockey and the dieting he endured, but he’s also seen cheerfully greeting all his staff in his new role as trainer at his Co. Kildare stables, where he’s sent out the winner of the Ebor, the Irish St Leger and the Sandringham Stakes at Royal Ascot. He’s a whirlwind of positivity – his philosophy is “When you meet someone in the street, try to improve their day”.

“Every morning I go to the yard and I say to myself, there’s 21 people working for you and how you are with them, how you greet them, is how they’re going to perform for you in the next five hours of work. So I check myself every morning – be on top of your game, be upbeat, be positive, but don’t worry about the response you get, because maybe they’ve come from an argument with their wife or the kids didn’t sleep – you are the leader so it has to emanate from you. Treat everyone well,” says Johnny. “I like to be busy, stuck in the middle of things. If anyone says you can’t do something I’m on it straight away – I’d say that’s my biggest flaw, I just want to prove you wrong!

“I’ve been lucky – I’ve been around the world, I’ve seen a lot of great things, met great people and rode a lot of winners. The first time I ever saw a horse race was in 1981, a Wednesday, when my uncle and I went in to watch the Derby – Walter Swinburn riding Shergar. I was 11 and I remember seeing this 19-year-old winning the Derby on this super horse, so the Derby is special to me. I rode in the same colours many years later.

“[As a trainer] I just want to be competitive in Ireland and to bring our horses over and be competitive on the big stage in England.”

Young riders’ mental health comes into the spotlight

THE importance of educating young people more about mental health has been discussed, as the Pony Club announces an increased focus on mental health and wellbeing.

Since the pandemic, youth mental health charity Beyond has reported a 173% increase in mental health issues in children aged 16 and under. An NHS England survey published in March 2021 reported that 39.2% of six- to 16-year-olds and 52.5% of 17- to 23-year-olds had experienced deterioration in their mental health since 2017.

Riders Minds, which recently secured charitable status, can now offer support to people of all ages via its resources, including a live chat and text service. Victoria Wright, who co-founded the charity with her husband Matthew, who took his own life in February 2021, told H&H it’s “so important” to educate people of all ages about mental health and wellbeing and described the Beyond figure as “disturbing and shocking”.

She believes more could be done in schools, especially in physical education classes, which she says should cover the mental health aspect of sport.

“If someone is struggling with their mental health, it is important to take that first really brave step and tell someone how they are feeling. If they can’t speak to a friend or their family, Riders Minds is there to help and support,” she said.

“We know it’s not always easy to talk, but our chat and text service is safe to use from behind a screen so a young person can speak to a trained professional anonymously without having to tell anyone. If they can’t say it verbally, they can write a letter or leave a note to a parent. Sometimes it’s easier than having a face-to-face.”

Victoria said that this year Riders Minds will be campaigning for more mental health education in colleges and through the apprenticeship scheme, as well looking to work “much more closely” with the Pony Club and governing bodies to support them in providing mental health support for members.

Pony Club chief executive Marcus Capel told H&H that this year the organisation is increasing its focus on mental health and wellbeing. The Pony Club is designing mental health-specific achievement badges, to add to its existing wellbeing badge, and is reviewing its tests to include increased awareness of mental health.

“We are being very open in the Pony Club about addressing mental health from all ages. With all the pressures on young people from school exams and peer pressure, we know being around horses and ponies can be a lifeline for them,” he said.“I think you can’t be too young to talk about it, but with younger children it might be discussing what makes them happy and that it’s OK to talk and who they can talk to. With increased focus on horse and pony welfare and what is needed to keep them happy, it gives a natural pathway to talk about our needs as humans.

“Schools are very good, but often the leisure time might be when a young person has that relationship with a person who’s not across a desk. It sometimes can be easier to talk to a friend in the Pony Club, an instructor or another parent and these things can’t be overestimated in their value to a young person’s life.”

Sylvia Bruce, a mental health counsellor who works with Riders Minds, told H&H any organisation that deals with young people has a part to play in educating them on mental health. And she said it was “brilliant” to hear about the Pony Club’s plans.

“If a child goes to a school that doesn’t have the resources or the manpower to provide that education, then if they’re getting it from the Pony Club or any other club they belong to, then that’s fantastic and they’re not missing out,” she said.

“The kids of today are our future, let’s educate them so as they grow up, we change the culture around mental health. There are a lot of issues around fear and the more we know about things, the less fearful we are, so by educating young people we might stand a chance of people speaking up sooner.”

Ms Bruce added that people need to understand the difference between the definition of mental health and mental ill-health and that the use of language around the topic is important.

“Mental ill-health, such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD [Post-traumatic stress disorder], are treatable so they’re not to be feared. We need to raise our own awareness of what ‘my’ experience of being OK is. Then we can recognise when we’re not having a good day – or whether it’s something else and what we can do for that.

“We need to recognise signs earlier and speak out earlier, so people don’t plummet to a place where they think there is no way out.”

A spokesman for The Tomorrow Project, which provides a suicide crisis service and support to anyone who has been bereaved or affected by suicide, told H&H suicide rates among young women are among the fastest growing in recent years.“Research is showing us the mental health of women and young people has been particularly affected during the pandemic,” she said.“These groups need to be prioritised to ensure that they receive the appropriate and tailored support that will meet their specific needs.

“Life can be difficult for everyone at times, but with the right support it can get better. No matter how big or small you think your problems are, it is OK to ask for help. We can help.”

‘The fear of mistakes knocked on my door every day’: Jessica von Bredow-Werndl on the ‘mental toolbox’ that helped her win Olympic gold

2021 was a year of dreams for Jessica von Bredow-Werndl, Olympic champion and European triple gold medallist. Riding the Trakehner mare TSF Dalera BB, the German rider proved invincible – leading her team to gold at the Tokyo Olympics, before winning the individual gold medal. Less than two months later, she repeated the feat at the European Championships, back on home soil in Hagen, Germany, winning team gold and two individual golds.

Tokyo was far from being Jessica’s first championships – she has been a stalwart of the German national team for several years, formerly with Gribaldi stallion Unee BB – but it was her first Olympic Games. And, having dominated the European show circuit during the early part of 2021, she and Dalera arrived in Japan as favourites for the gold – as long as they could find a way to beat the indomitable Isabell Werth with Bella Rose.

“I knew I had the chance to win [gold] but I didn’t expect it,” Jessica revealed to H&H dressage editor Polly Bryan on episode 86 of The Horse & Hound Podcast. “To win at an Olympic Games, everything has to work out and be on point. You have to keep your nerves under control.

“Dalera was amazing; she tried her heart out for me and gave me the feeling every day that everything was going to be alright. It was a real fairytale, actually.”

The individual final in Tokyo played out in dramatic fashion, with Jessica setting a sky-high target of 91.73% ahead of her compatriot and closest rival Isabell entering the arena.

“I remember the feeling when I realised that I could be individual Olympic champion, even though it wasn’t sure yet, and that feeling was so emotional,” said Jessica, describing the moment she watched Isabell’s score of 89.6% flash up on the screen and realised she was still holding the top spot with just two riders left to go.

“I didn’t expect it to be that emotional, but it showed me how much I really wanted it actually,” she continued. “I always tried to tell myself, ‘you can’t do more than giving your best’, but the moment you know you might achieve your dream is so incredible. There was a lot of pressure inside myself and at that moment everything just fell down. It was unbelievable.”

Jessica admitted that she felt considerable pressure in the run-up to the Games, but mostly stemming from her own hopes and expectations rather than from other people.

“I always told myself that Dalera doesn’t know the difference between the German championships and the Olympics, so why should I make there be a difference, and that all we can do is our best. But the fear of not performing knocked on my door every day.

“Luckily I could prepare myself over other championships and several years of experience now at this top level. Over the years I have created a mental toolbox that I can grab from, for example meditation or breathing techniques.

“It helps me handle the pressure but also the fear to make mistakes, because on one hand to make mistakes is very normal, but on the other hand it’s stupid if it happens [at an Olympics],” she said.

Jessica also revealed that a comment in an article written by H&H’s dressage editor shortly before the Olympics had quite a profound effect on her going into the Games.

“Reading that sentence [suggesting she could become the next Olympic champion] was the first time I really confronted myself with this topic and thought, ‘Wow, there are people who really believe it’s possible’. I read it and it really touched me and was a big motivation for me actually,” said Jessica.

New scheme to boost wellbeing through horse-human connection

An equine rescue charity is helping to bring the power of the horse-human connection to more people with a new wellbeing programme.

The Mare and Foal Sanctuary, near Newton Abbot, has launched a new equine assisted wellbeing initiative, funded by Sport England as part of the This Girl Can campaign, called “Exercise with Equines”.

The saying goes that the “outside of a horse good for the inside of a man”, and improving mental wellbeing and a return to activity after the challenges of the pandemic and repeated lockdowns are big parts of the scheme’s aim. There is also the “win-win factor” of supporting a charity and horses’ welfare, as well as the mental and physical pluses for humans that come with caring for horses.

“Although many women are active in equestrian sports already, we wanted to attract women and girls who may never have had the opportunity to interact with equines before and introduce them to the physical and mental benefits,” said Dawn Neil, head of education at the Mare and Foal Sanctuary.

“Since Covid, many people have struggled with their mental wellbeing and are less active than they used to be. We can offer a safe, supportive space that allows participants to recharge mentally while also being active.”

The initiative involves up to 36 women and girls (aged 16 and above) spending time outdoors learning the basics of horse care and actively working with rescued horses and ponies, who have been carefully selected to work with people.

“The equines come from a range of backgrounds, but all enjoy spending time with humans. Both people and horses are supported in the sessions by members of staff dedicated to their wellbeing,” said a spokesman for the charity.

“Each session involves physical activities, which help to care for the rescued horses and ponies. [The participants] will learn about basic stable and field management, grooming and filling haynets.

“Sessions also include focused time working with the rescued horses and ponies through gentle activity supported by an accredited professional coach. This might involve in-hand walks around the site, basic leading and agility work or long-reining in the indoor arena.”

Sessions will run in blocks of six weeks until October 2022.

Riders urged to give ‘one kind word’ and beat the bullies

The equestrian world has been encouraged to continue to speak up about negative behaviour in the industry during national anti-bullying week (15–19 November).

The theme of this year’s week is “One Kind Word”, with the Anti-Bullying Alliance – which is spearheading the campaign – stating that “kindness is more important today than it ever has been”.

“The isolation of the last year has underlined how little acts of consideration and charity can break down barriers and brighten the lives of the people around us,” said an Anti-Bullying Alliance spokesman.

Event rider Jake Tarrant, who launched the “Good Sport Initiative” in 2019 which aimed to promote positivity in the equestrian community using the hashtag #buddydontbully, said the lockdowns highlighted that bullying is “still rife” in the horse world.

“Riders were being judged for what they were or weren’t doing during lockdown. There was an awful lot of belittling and heckling going on and it’s proved that bullying is still a very valid concern,” he said. “A wrong word at the wrong time can ruin someone, but a kind word at the right time when you need it can be enough to put you back on the right track and give you hope.

“We need more people who are prepared to lift others up, and I think we need the governing bodies to be stepping in, with repercussions such as temporary bans if bullying is seen at shows. It’s so important people are encouraged to speak out and know they’re not on their own.”

Riders Minds offers an online resource dedicated to supporting the mental health of equestrians, including those who are being affected by bullying.

“It’s a tricky and uncomfortable topic but it’s one that needs addressing because it has a huge impact on people,” a Riders Minds spokesman told H&H.

“The horse world can be very emotive because people are so invested in their horses and the sport. Bullying can stem from a range of emotions; sometimes from insecurities or jealousy, but other times it’s not necessarily out of spite or malice – people sometimes don’t think how their words might affect somebody. But if that somebody is already having a bad day, one more thing can be enough to trigger that person towards a place they don’t want to be in.”

British Equestrian member bodies have safeguarding policies on their websites including details of who to report bullying to, and chief executive Jim Eyre told H&H the federation feels “very strongly” that bullying should not be tolerated.

“No one should hesitate to report a concern, either as a victim or witness, using the channels in place,” he said.

“We work with our member bodies to ensure everyone in equestrian sport is safeguarded from bullying, harassment and abuse and has an enjoyable experience. We will be supporting anti-bullying week and encourage everyone in the equestrian community to do so too.”

The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) said it is working with industry participants to develop a code of conduct that will be designed to endorse the “many positive” behaviours in the sport.

“It will also be designed to deter any negative behaviours that may arise, ensuring anyone who witnesses or is on the receiving end of poor conduct, feels confident and comfortable in calling it out,” said a BHA spokesman, adding that concerns about behaviour can be raised via representative bodies, the BHA or the confidential RaceWISE reporting service.

“Any complaints raised through these routes can be made in the knowledge that they will be taken seriously and that appropriate action will be taken.”

Employers are encouraged to have a “zero tolerance” policy against bullying in yards, with documented disciplinary action if required.

“There is no excuse for bullying in the industry and we all have a duty of care to eradicate it. Bullying has a direct correlation to mental health and wellbeing issues, and employers have a moral responsibility to provide a safe working environment,” a spokesman for the Equestrian Employers Association (EEA) told H&H.

“Employers must lead by example and can get support on safeguarding policies and best practices from the EEA.”

Opinion: The Fall – a film as powerful in its silences as in its words

The Fall is a masterful film, and one I wish never had to be made. I mean that only as a credit to its creators. The delicate and sensitive handling of a painful subject matter, personal to a number of those involved, was expertly done.

Equine Productions’ striking 22-minute feature has sat with me all week, since the early premier at Ascot racecourse on Saturday.

The film, co-directed by Cold Feet star Robert Bathurst, focuses on a jockey’s car journey home after a high-profile fall at the final fence. While the jockey, Tom, and his story are fiction, every social media message used was real. It is raw, painful, believable and hard to watch.

Nathan Horrocks’ script is as powerful in its silences as it is in its words. The unsaid is left hanging loudly in the air – the space between what someone feels, what they say and what they mean orbiting in every scene.

The simplicity of taking one snapshot of one person’s day and the gaps in the story the audience is left to fill is what makes The Fall so effective in its message. That is made possible by the excellent directing and casting in particular of Daniel Thrace as Tom and Chloe Wade as his girlfriend Emily. The mirroring of their stories – their own battles they are facing and the masks they use both as a shield against themselves and to face the outside world – is again as powerful in what the audience can see as what is left undisclosed.

I wish it was a story that didn’t have to be told. The important thing is that it has been, paving the way for more conversations, more changes and a better future.

The discussion that followed at Ascot, hosted by Nick Luck, was cause for hope, too, highlighting the impact and want to talk the film had inspired in just one room. When this film premieres tonight, that will take those challenging discussions far beyond the racecourse’s gates.

Held to account

On the subject of hope, a year ago, I wrote of hope from the industry’s collective push for change. One year on and that hope is still there, mixed with anger – no longer anger at the sport. Anger at the faceless social media powerhouses that choose not to do more to protect their users.

I’m a passionate believer in free speech – I’d be in the wrong job if I wasn’t – but there is unbearable ignorance surrounding what that means. There is a 477 page book on my desk, giving a light summary. To sum-up, freedom of expression categorically does not mean you can say or print what you like, when you like and expect the world to say “oh ok, it’s a free country, as you were…”

“Don’t read the comments”, is a phrase people in certain industries and in the public eye, among others, will be all too familiar with. How about “don’t make the comments”? Even better, combine that with social media giants taking proper action – that they very well can take – and it becomes “be held accountable for your comments”.

There needs to be a shift-change to stop the perpetrators, rather than pushing the onus onto those on the receiving end. I’m not just talking about social media or sport here. It’s bigger than that, and I wish I had the answers.

I don’t have those, sadly. What I do have is faith that growing numbers of people care enough to make that change happen.

The Fall, funded by the Peter O’Sullevan Charitable Trust, the Professional Jockeys Association, and the Even Keel Foundation, premieres at 10pm tonight (7 October) on Sky Sports Racing. It will also available on catch-up.

‘Don’t ever think they won’t do it’: Matthew Wright’s wife speaks out on World Suicide Prevention Day

IF efforts being made to support riders’ mental health can save even one person’s life, it will be worth everything.

Support service Riders Minds released a documentary on World Suicide Prevention Day, on 10 September, almost seven months after co-founder Matthew Wright took his own life.

Presented by journalist Lizzie Greenwood-Hughes, the film included an interview with Matthew’s wife Victoria, who set up Riders Minds with her husband.

“Whenever anyone’s saying they’re going to take their own life, or it becomes normal living with someone with a mental illness, don’t ever think they’re not going to do it,” Victoria said.

She had told Lizzie she had met Matthew through horses, how her husband was a great father to their three children, who had achieved so much in eventing. She said he might have appeared tough but was insecure, taking comments to heart, and that he had attempted to take his own life several times.

“We’d got help for him and he improved for a couple of years,” Victoria said, adding that before his death, Matthew seemed “probably the happiest he’d ever been”.

“Whether he’d planned it and had decided the time was right, I don’t know,” she said. “He sent me a message that morning that said ‘Today is the perfect day’. I look back now and think, the perfect day for what?”

Matthew spent the morning with the children on Valentine’s Day, then cooked Victoria dinner. She said he seemed normal, if reminiscing about good times, when she put the children to bed.

“I read them a story, then flicked on Facebook, all normal things you do. I came back upstairs and he was dead. He was dead. I found him, and you kick yourself; why was I on my phone, why did I not go upstairs 10 minutes earlier. I could have stopped him.”

Victoria said telling her children Daddy had died was the hardest thing she had ever done, and probably will ever do.

She explained how Matthew’s blogs on HorseandHound.co.uk, in which he was very open about his mental health, had led to many other riders’ getting in touch to relate similar stories. The British Grooms Association (BGA) then asked him to write a similar blog, and Matthew, seeing the Grooms Minds and Employers Minds services provided by the BGA, proposed a similar resource for riders.

“He was really passionate that there should be a Riders Minds,” Victoria said. A meeting with the BGA followed and Riders Minds was set up.

“We set it up and funded the start of it, because the equestrian world needed this service,” she said. “We’re adding services, so there are more things there to help people.”

Matthew’s best friend Matthew Heath, another top eventer, said the phone call about Matthew’s death was “one I won’t forget”.

He said professional riders are lucky enough to do their hobby for a living, but that while the riding itself is “the best job in the world”, the added pressure of its being a career, and “everything that goes with it”, is tough.

Clinical psychologist Duncan Law, who works with the Injured Jockeys Fund, said studies have shown almost twice as many people within racing suffer from mental health issues than the general population.

Asked why riders may be more susceptible, he said: “That’s a really important question, but a hard one.”

He added that the industry is a tough one, and a “losing one”; even stellar successes like AP McCoy have lost more times than they have won.

“The earlier we can get to people, the better we can do,” he said. “But also to start the conversation, at the start of their careers, so mental health is on the agenda. It’s a good thing for you to do, but also for your career.”

Equestrian influencer Kate Lewis, who shared her mental health issues online — she was bullied at school, then home-schooled – had reached a point where she was having “nasty thoughts about doing things to myself”. She called her GP, received the help she needed, and is now a “different person”.

“It’s nice to realise it’s possible to get to the other side,” she said. “I’d encourage anyone else to do the same as me; speak to someone and start that journey because you never know where you are in that dark tunnel; you could just have one corner left till you see the light.”

Riders Minds director Sylvia Bruce, a former very successful banker who had tried to take her own life more than once, also went to her GP and has since been “transformed”.

She said horses had always been her therapy, as did Lizzie, who asked whether, for equestrian professionals, the fact horses are not then an escape has an impact.

“I think there is an element of that,” Sylvia said. “Even when something is your passion, there’s a balance, and a tipping point, where it can go into something else and loses the passion.”

Sylvia added that she wishes Matthew could see how well Riders Minds has done, “and the fact we’re still pushing forwards for him”.

“I want Riders Minds to be the go-to for all equestrians,” she said. “If we can stop one person doing what Matthew did, then wow.”

‘Inspirational’ horse relay featuring thousands of riders raises £10,000 by halfway point

A horse relay featuring thousands of riders has reached the halfway point, and already raised more than £10,000 for charity.

The Great Horses for Health Relay 2021 started in Yorkshire in May and will have covered 11 regions across UK over six months. Participants choose their own routes in their local areas, which are recorded on a map, and the relay “baton” is passed to the next regions at a pre-arranged Covid-safe event.

The fundraising event, created by rider Sophie Gifford, aims to boost participants’ mental health and highlight how horses can help with wellbeing. It is raising funds for seven charities: the Riding for the Disabled Association, Redwings, Bransby Horses, North Wales Horse Watch, HorseWorld, Hope Pastures and Horseback UK.

A spokesman for the relay said many “life stories” have emerged since the start of the event including that of Jayne Watson and her horse Stanley, whom she rescued in 2006 as a neglected five-year-old.

“Jayne suffered a marriage breakdown and was going through a difficult time in her life. The pair built an inseparable bond that was tested to the limit when in 2017 Jayne and Stanley suffered a horrific road accident,” he said.

“Through Jayne’s devotion and determination, Stanley and Jayne returned to health and were able to carry a baton for the relay during the North West region stage.”

Sophie said so many “heartbreaking but inspirational” personal stories have come out of the relay.

“For many people horses have helped them through extremely difficult periods of their life including lockdown and hugely improved their mental health and wellbeing. We started to fundraise in May and as of the beginning of July we’ve passed the halfway mark in our journey across the UK, and raised more than £10,000 for our charities,” she said.

The relay garnered royal backing in the form of the Duchess of Cornwall as patron, while mounted police forces, top riders and footballers have shown support including Carl Hester, Laura Tomlinson, Dickie Waygood, Rio Ferdinand and Glen Hoddles.

Participants can still register to take part in the relay at www.horses4health.co.uk. People can ride, carriage drive, or take part in-hand. Individuals can also cycle or walk.

DESPITE suffering from crippling anxiety, Cally Humphrey’s held her nerve to qualify her coloured pony Fouche’s Wizard of Oz for the BSPA Small traditional/native pony class at the Royal International Horse Show in their first affiliated season.

“I suffer with health anxiety, and during the pandemic, I spent the majority of the time isolating, and wouldn’t even go to the shops,” explained Cally. “A lot of my anxiety is to do with food and touching surfaces and being near people, but when I’m on ‘Ozzie’ I forget everything and am focused and happy. He is my confidence and he distracts me from my anxiety.”

Cally has owned Ozzie since he was an unbroken three-year-old, backing and producing him herself.

“He’s been nothing but a little devil,” she said. “I’ve had years of battles with him from grade four ulcers which we now manage through his diet, to being cold backed. He also retained a testicle as a youngster and had to be operated on by Redwing’s surgeons; the list is endless.

“He was so naughty we had him investigated for kissing spines, but the vet basically told me a lot of his issues were in his mind.”

Cally spent a lot of time gaining the pony’s trust, and he is now confident and happy.

This year, she decided to take Ozzie affiliated showing for the first time and despite everything, they qualified for the RIHS.

“In the last year he’s finally turned his hoof the right way,” she said. “I absolutely adore this pony and he’s made a dream come true. Although we weren’t placed in our class on Tuesday, I was over the moon just to be there and cried the whole way round the ring. It was an amazing achievement for both of us.”

Cally hopes to continue showing Ozzie for years to come and aim for Horse of the Year Show qualifiers.

“He’s my godsend and has been my therapy over the last year or so,” said Cally. “He is the happiest of ponies now and is worth his weight in gold to me.”

Ponies go into north London school to help vulnerable pupils

A north London school has drafted in horses to help provide post-Covid mental health support.

East Finchley’s Archer Academy, a community secondary school, has been trialling equine-assisted therapy for vulnerable pupils.

The school funded three sessions with equine therapist Lotte Carlebach, who brought in ponies to help students interact in a “mindful way” and help develop their self-awareness, communication skills and empathy.

A spokesman for the school said it takes students’ mental health “incredibly seriously” and has successfully applied for grants to supply a number of initiatives, which also included broadening school counselling provision, running art therapy sessions, training senior students to become peer mentors and training staff to become mental health first-aiders.

The school believes the equine therapy has already had an impact on pupils’ wellbeing, and is now hoping to raise money to fund more sessions.

Senior assistant headteacher Jo Mahoney, who is spearheading the programme, said: “Covid-19 has been hard for everyone, but it’s fair to say that some of our students, particularly those with learning difficulties or complex emotional needs, have struggled more than others.

“We are determined to do everything we possibly can to help them settle back into school life, and overcome the trauma of the last 18 months, and equine therapy is a brilliant solution.”

Jo added that it had been “wonderful to watch the students interacting with the ponies” at the 800-pupil academy.

“It has a truly calming effect on them, which is just what they need after the upheaval of the last year or so,” she said. “But it’s more than that; Lotte is also teaching them about the ponies’ herd dynamics which supports them to navigate the group dynamics they encounter at school. For students who don’t find this easy or instinctive, and who have spent too much time isolated at home, this is a brilliant way to learn.”

Body image a significant issue for riders, study finds

Riders’ negative opinions of their own body shape is a significant issue, a prizewinning study has indicated — while many people believe a larger physical size has a detrimental effect on competition judging.

Sofia Forino, a student of BSC equestrian performance management at University Centre Sparsholt (UCS), won the undergraduate prize at the 2021 virtual Equine Science Symposium (1-4 June) for her abstract An investigation into self-perception of body image in female equestrians in the United Kingdom.

Sofia’s research, which is part of her dissertation, is being conducted with British Horse Foundation (BHF) lecturer bursary funding, and was written with UCS lecturers Lorna Cameron, Natalie Stones and Marianne Freeman. The aim was to look at self-perception of body image and the potential impact on wellbeing and performance in the equine industry, something that is being investigated at UCS as part of the BHF lecturer bursary.

Sofia told H&H her research involved a questionnaire, to which she had 493 responses from competitive and non-competitive riders.

Participants were asked which of 10 body images, scaled from small to large, they felt was the most ideal shape for a rider.

Nearly half, 46%, chose the second-thinnest image, 25% the thinnest and 26% the third-smallest frame, so only 3% felt any bigger was the ideal shape.

“There was almost no impact on the answer from [the respondent’s] age, whether they were competitive or not, or what sort of riding they did,” Sofia said. “I’d expected people in different areas maybe to say different things; maybe people who just hacked or rode once a month to say you can be a bit bigger than someone competing but there was no difference at all, it was really surprising.”

Respondents were also asked to rate their own body shape, and a significant number put themselves larger than the frame they thought was ideal. Those who rated themselves two sizes or more above their ideal were seen as having body dissatisfaction.

“We found these people to be more self-conscious when riding than those who put themselves closer to their ideal shape,” Sofia said. “We asked how people felt riding in a group or in front of others, and there was a correlation between those classified as body dissatisfied and feeling more self-conscious.”

Almost half of the riders surveyed, 49%, felt that competition judges favour riders with smaller frames, again with no effect from the respondents’ own situations, something Sofia said she would like to look into further.

“If I can look at that, it will allow more practical application [of the study results],” she said. “If it can be disproved, hopefully people will feel more confident to participate; this opens the door for more research that I hope will have more application for the industry.”

The survey also looked at breast size, and found those with larger breasts not only suffered breast pain related to riding, but also felt more self-conscious while riding and competing.

Sofia, who is to start a master’s degree in equine behaviour, performance and training at USC in September, added: “I am absolutely thrilled to have won the undergraduate competition and I would like to thank UCS lectures for their help and support throughout.”

‘Beyond a dream come true’: Riders Minds wins at global awards

A mental health organisation set up to support equestrians has won two prestigious global awards.

Mental health support organisation This Can Happen held its annual awards yesterday (24 June) during which charities and organisations were recognised for “excellence in their approach towards positive mental health for employees and colleagues”.

Riders Minds won the best targeted mental health initiative category, which celebrates mental health campaigns and initiatives that workforces have implemented for either a specific group of employees or a specialist initiative to solve a particular workplace challenge.

Speaking about Riders Minds, one judge said: “This feels like an industry that may not have been addressed before and a gap that needed to be filled with support. Fantastic strategy, well thought out, very inclusive.”

The organisation also took the grand prix award, given to the “most outstanding” award entry.

Riders Minds, which celebrated its first birthday in May, was founded by the late event rider Matthew Wright and his wife, Victoria, with support from a number of companies, and with the British Grooms Association and Equestrian Employers Association acting as consultants.

Victoria said it had not sunk in yet what the organisation had achieved in such a short space of time.

“We are only a small team of six, but six brilliant people with drive and passion can make a huge amount of difference,” she said.

Boost for riders’ mental health support services, plus the latest equestrian partnership news

Newly launched equestrian wellness company The Conscious Equestrian has announced an affiliation with Riders Minds.

Riders Minds is an online resource, dedicated to supporting and improving the mental health and wellbeing of everyone in the equestrian industry, and also provides a free, confidential, 24-hour helpline.

The new affiliation means five percent of all sales made by The Conscious Equestrian will be donated to Riders Minds.

“The entire team at The Conscious Equestrian is delighted to be able to give back to the equestrian community, in the form of regular donations to Riders Minds,” said Ali Dane, director at The Conscious Equestrian.

“We are acutely aware of the ongoing need for mental health support within the equestrian community and are keen to help riders overcome psychological hurdles they may encounter, be it through donating funds for the Riders Minds support line, or by raising awareness via our free online content.”

Liz Daniels, of Riders Minds, added the organisation is delighted to be supported by The Conscious Equestrian.

“[This is] an organisation which shares the same passion for wanting to help and support the equestrian industry,” she said. “By working together we can continue to promote the importance of positive mental health and well-being, and provide a safe place for those who need support through our online resources and free helpline. The Conscious Equestrian is an exciting new venture and one we are excited to be aligned with.”

Racing League

The new team racing series has announced a two-year partnership with sports mental health charity Sporting Chance.

Sporting Chance, which carries the title of the series’ official charity, will work with Racing League on a number of initiatives, with a specific focus on the Sporting Chance Benevolent Fund, which supports current and retired athletes with mental health issues.

“I am very proud of the work that Sporting Chance has done in the world of horseracing and very excited to be involved in the Racing League,” said Sporting Chance founder Tony Adams.

“Together, the opportunity to put some focus on mental health in sport – and help others that may not be looked after as well as the Professional Jockeys Association look after jockeys – is amazing.”

Racing League chief executive Jeremy Wray added: “One of the key drivers behind the creation of the Racing League is the desire to showcase the human stories that go hand in hand with the equine stories.

“Sporting Chance is a great fit for the Racing League in terms of its focus on the mental health of professional athletes, and its pioneering work with jockeys in particular. We look forward to helping it deliver more programmes over the next two years, and hope that the awareness it strives to bring to issues surrounding mental health will grow as a result of the partnership with the Racing League.”

Baileys Horse Feeds

The feed company is the new title sponsor of the British Eventing youth regional championships at Bishop Burton College (28 July to 1 August).

This is the first year Bishop Burton has held the championships, which will run alongside its junior and young rider CCI2*-L classes.

The youth regional championships have been extended to include riders under the age of 19 this year, owing to the loss of last year’s championships to coronavirus.

“We’re excited to get the opportunity to sponsor the youth regional championships this year and are really looking forward to being present to experience the event first-hand,” said Baileys marketing manager, Jane Buchan.

“Baileys have worked, regionally, with a number of young riders and it will be great to see their hard work come to fruition at the championships.”

Robinson Animal Health Care

The animal first aid product company has welcomed international para showjumper Laura Goodall to its team of sponsored riders.

The Shropshire-based 27-year-old has ridden since she was six and competed in British Showjumping competitions from the age of 13, before life took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2015.

Laura gave up riding for a year as her condition had progressed to such an extent that she could no longer ride.

But she got back in the saddle and retrained her “new” body to ride. In 2018 Laura was classified for para showjumping and began to compete in para competitions in 2019.

Laura now competes in both para showjumping and British Showjumping competitions with her top horse Guusje.

“To be sponsored by such a high-profile equestrian healthcare company that is one of the leaders in this field is brilliant,” said Laura, who won a competition to be sponsored by the brand.

“I have always used various products from Robinson Animal Healthcare, in particular veterinary gamgee and animalintex as and when required. I’m really looking forward to see what the coming year has in store.”

The equine arena surface specialist is celebrating its sixth year in partnership with British Dressage (BD).

The company has committed to support BD for a sixth year, with a new contract to cover 2021 as the organisation’s official surface supplier and partner.

The agreement continues the company’s support of the “nationals pavilion” at the LeMieux National Championships (dates TBC) and extends its sponsorship to include the 2021 advanced medium championships.

Coldstream Equestrian

Equestrian performance clothing brand Coldstream has joined Hickstead’s portfolio of 2021 sponsors.

The brand, whose name is inspired by the legendary showjumper and eventer Hydrophane Coldstream, has signed a three-year sponsorship deal of ring four at the iconic West Sussex venue.

Ring four classes in the summer season range from 1m to 1.35m, as well as arena eventing, and a total of 14,418 competitive rounds took place in there during the 2019 season.

From October to May, the newly titled Coldstream Equestrian Ring Four combines with ring three to offer a huge all-weather cross-country schooling facility. In its first winter, close to 4,500 horses visited for training.

Rider who hit ‘rock bottom’ and was ready to give up found life and love thanks to her horse

“The best way to describe it is that I hit rock bottom — and then found out rock bottom had a basement. Just when I thought things couldn’t get worse, they did.

“I remember looking at Monty, heaving a massive sigh and saying ‘I can’t keep going for me; I can’t do this. But maybe I can try for you’.

“If it wasn’t for this horse, I wouldn’t be here. I know that with every fibre of my being.”

Jess Day had planned for that evening to be her last. Having suffered frequent falls and pain, she was diagnosed with connective tissue disorder Ehlers Danlos syndrome (EDS) as a teenager.

“I was always dislocating things; I assumed all children felt that pain, and it was normal,” Jess told H&H.

“I was referred to a specialist, who said it was a really severe case of EDS type three. She said. ‘I’m really sorry but this is one of the worst cases I’ve seen in 20 years in such a young person’.

“She asked what I wanted to do and I explained about the horses. She said: ‘Stop now. You’ll really hurt yourself and make it worse; give up’.

“It was such a harsh way of saying it. She said I’d be in a wheelchair at the age of 25.”

Jess “followed her dream” by studying equestrian behaviour and management at Myerscough College but her condition deteriorated rapidly and by the age of 19, she was a full-time wheelchair user.

Before this point, she had suffered serious injuries when a horse she was riding fell backwards on to a fence so she lost confidence, and “as soon as I stopped riding, I deteriorated like you wouldn’t believe”.

She bought Monty, a four-year-old part-bred Irish draught, in an attempt to regain her confidence.

“I had to explain to sellers that I was getting weaker and needed something steady,” she said. “I never expected to buy a four-year-old but saw his photo and something said ‘You need to look at him’.

“The seller, Emily, was lovely, and it was the strangest thing; when I looked at him, it was like I knew him. I was so nervous after the accident but he stood by the mounting block for 20 minutes as I was crying and shaking. I walked him round and something said ‘This what you’re looking for’. I took him home and the rest is history.”

Jess turned Monty away for six weeks, as she felt his multiple changes of home had worried him, and he came back better. But by this time mainly in her chair, she had to work with him sitting down.

“I was planning to take my life at this time; I didn’t see a future for me without horses,” she said. “Being in that chair took everything away. One night, I’d planned it to be my last but I was looking at him, and thought ‘What happens to you, if something happens to me?’ He’s a bit strong and full of character, and in the wrong hands, he could have become dangerous. I hung on for him.”

So Jess decided to live. She took steps to lose the weight she had gained, and started groundwork with Monty. She could take a few steps, but suffered constant dislocations, and when she was helped on to Monty for the first time, three years ago this week, “it was the most painful thing I’ve ever done in my lifetime”.

“Everything in my body started to spasm,” Jess said. “My legs were shaking, and I was frightened, but he was like a rock, it was like he was saying ‘I’ve got you, what are you worried about?’ I cried and cried.

“I got off him and into my chair and thought ‘I’ve got to keep doing this’. It was excruciating for months but I thought ‘I’m going to do this for you, because I can’t let you go, and I can’t let me go’.”

Over the next months and years, Jess doggedly built back her strength — her condition means she builds muscle far more slowly than normal, and loses it more quickly — and her confidence.

She now rides five times a week, for 45 minutes, which she says is her mental and physical therapy.

“There’s no better healer than an animal,” she said. “I truly believe I was given Monty for this purpose. The pain is still there; I’ve got back the strength to walk but suffer with chronic pain daily. But even if I’m having a bad day, riding takes my mind off it, and on to what I’m doing.

“This condition has no cure, no fix, but I hope that as long as I keep riding, I’ll be ok.

“The wheelchair is always looming over me, like a black cloud, saying ‘Eventually, I’ll come back to you’. It’s a big anxiety but anxiety wants you to be afraid and isolate yourself. I just sit up a bit straighter and say to it: ‘Just watch me. I can do this’.

“That’s the mindset I got on this journey and it’s what’s kept me going.”

Jess started a Facebook page, Here Comes Monty, on which she hopes to help other people by sharing her experiences.

“I get incredible messages and stories; people saying they’ve started riding again because they saw me and Monty, or their horses have got them through; it’s overwhelming, and it lifts me like nothing else.

“The love of our horses is like a silver thread that connects us all. These people support me, and I can say: ‘Look at this. This is how bad things were, but this is where we are, and where we’re happy, and we keep going’.

“I’ve got things so many people can relate to; I’m a novice rider, a nervous rider, a disabled rider, my mental health, and I’m a mad equestrian who loves everything to do with horses. I’m passionate about trying to take away different stigmas.

“I’m writing a book too, and I hope the light I try to shine for other people in the dark can broaden the beam, to say to people: you can get through this.”

Jess thanked her “amazing” friends; instructor Cheryl Addison and her daughter Becky Walsh, as well as her “Cockney farmer” boyfriend Martin.

But most of all, she is grateful to Monty.

“That horse gave me life when nothing else could,” she said. “I owe him everything, and more. I’m convinced he knows that too; he’s so cocky.

“He came out of nowhere and saved my life; I knew exactly what I was going to do that night; I’d even written to my mum and friends. But I believe this journey was given to me because I could handle it, and I feel I was given it to help others, and that’s all I want to do.”

Jess, who has already won a dressage competition on Monty, intends to compete more, in dressage and showing, and also continue proving her doctor wrong.

“I went back to the specialist last January and her jaw dropped when she saw me walk in.” she said. “She prodded and poked and asked what I’d been doing. I said riding, and she said she’d never seen a recovery like it.

“But then she said ‘You know this will catch up with you’. I said ‘Just let it try’.

During 2021 Mental Health Awareness Week (10-16 May) plans for a new vital resource to help riders get more support have been revealed.

Mental health organisation Riders Minds, which celebrates its first birthday this week, will launch a new text and web chat service in the near future. The charity was founded by the late event rider Matthew Wright and his wife, Victoria, with support from a number of companies, and with the British Grooms Association and Equestrian Employers Association acting as consultants.

Following 38-year-old Matthew’s death on 15 February, supporters donated thousands of pounds to the organisation, which has been used to fund the new service.

“Adding a live chat and text service to the Riders Minds helpline was critically important and it is because of the generosity of other people that this became possible,” said Victoria.

“Matthew always said to me ‘men can’t just pick up the phone and talk to someone they don’t even know’, and after everything that’s happened I couldn’t get this out of my mind. We had to do something and something that Matt would be proud of.”

Victoria added that the organisation will continue to work hard to improve the service provided by Riders Minds and in doing so “hopefully save more lives”.

“We will work hard to remove the stigma of suicide. No bereaved person should ever have to read that word on a death certificate. It’s not suicide, it’s an illness,” she said.

“Riders Minds wants to ensure that we improve the mental wellbeing of all equestrian people and that with our help and the services provided, you can and will get better.”

At the start of May the organisation launched the 100 Miles for Riders Minds virtual challenge encouraging people to ride, walk, run or cycle 100 miles to raise awareness of the mental health support available to the equestrian industry. Individuals or teams can take part and the challenge is still welcoming new participants: https://ridersminds.org/news/26/100-miles-for-riders-minds.

Other initiatives by the organisation launching this week include a small selection of branded clothing, with all profits going to the organisation’s work, and a new section on the Riders Minds website for those supporting others struggling with mental health.

Racing Welfare, a charity supporting the workforce of British horseracing, is also supporting Mental Health Awareness Week. This year’s theme is nature and the racing charity has launched a digital campaign highlighting the importance of engaging with the natural world to benefit mental health. A video produced in conjunction with Equine Productions and the staff at trainer Andrew Balding’s Kingsclere training operation will be released this week.

The charity is also highlighting a survey, launched by the Industry Wellbeing Committee, a committee made up of industry-wide professionals, to gather “crucial baseline data” on the wellbeing of the sport’s entire workforce. Personal trainer’s solo marathon effort in memory of lost riders

A personal trainer who specialises in working with riders is setting out on a solo marathon next weekend (May 1-2) to raise money for two equestrian charities.

Former eventer and freelance groom Katie Bleekman will be tackling the 26-mile run for mental health charity Riders’ Minds and the Injured Jockeys’ Fund (IJF).

While many marathons have been cancelled because of the pandemic, Abbotts World Marathon Majors, which runs the world’s “big six” marathons, have been encouraging people to undertake “virtual” marathons, where they run individually wherever in the world they might be.

Katie, who is based near Cullompton in Devon, plans to run a route taking in portions of the coastal path between Dawlish and Exeter, setting off on either 1 or 2 May.

“I was meant to be running the Manchester marathon but because of Covid it changed to the autumn,” said Katie, who has already run several marathons including Amsterdam and London. “I will be doing this one as part of an Abbots World race — they give you a race number and you submit your time, which helps with keeping accountable.”

Katie was inspired to raise money for mental health charity Riders’ Minds, and the IJF (who have recently launched an initiative with clinical psychologist group Changing Minds) following the deaths of former jockey James Banks and Riders’ Minds founder Matthew Wright.

“I met James once or twice through having some of the same circles of friends and the news [of his death] hit me quite hard, it’s very sad to lose someone at a young age,” Katie said. “Then there was also Matthew’s passing, as well as Liam Treadwell last year.

“While everyone struggles, I particularly wanted to do this to raise awareness of men’s mental health — it seems men in their 20s and 30s find it difficult to talk about what they’re going through. It’s a huge issue in the equestrian world.”

She added that she also felt the charities were good choices as they worked directly with governing bodies of the sport.

“Horsey people have a habit of plugging on without stopping to think about themselves and they don’t always realise how bad a place they’re in,” she said. “I like to do things that challenge me and takes me out of my comfort zone. I don’t enjoy running marathons while I am doing them but running 26 miles alone is nothing compared to someone who is really struggling through mental health problems.”

Katie has already been on one 20-mile training run and although she has suffered a “bit of a knee niggle”, hopes to be on target for the marathon next week.

“I’m hoping I can persuade a couple of people to run a few miles with me for a bit of support,” she said. “When I did Amsterdam and London the atmosphere was incredible, so it’s going to be a very different experience.”

Katie is hoping to raise £5,000 for the charities, which will be divided 50/50. Donations can be made via JustGiving.

2024 Winter Area Festival Championships: “To have fun together is our main goal”

Reflecting on her experience at the championships, Ruby adds: “The atmosphere was next level. What I liked about it was that I got to be social in a way that I feel comfortable with – we’re all there to compete so there’s no room to feel out of place.

“Saying that, the day before the test Rudi was wild – throwing numerous shapes in the exercise ring, which was a bit off-putting but no way was I going to let it take over our achievement of getting there.

“The stewards were lovely helping us have multiple quiet exercise slots to calm us both down and although it wasn’t our best test, we went down the centre line and halted at the end, and that was all I ever wanted.”

Ruby now has her sights set on the Summer Petplan Area Festival Championships – that is once her GCSEs are out of the way – but is keen to keep the experience as fun as possible.

“Although I’m competitive I need to remember where we’ve come from, it’s so easy to get ahead of yourself so I want to stop pressurising myself. To have fun together is our main goal in the long run.”

Ruby’s mum Charlotte adds how proud it makes her to watch Ruby compete: “The incredible bond they have, creates a low-stress, non-judgemental interaction which provides Ruby with a huge amount of self-confidence and belief.

“We never imagined they’d have this magnetic silent connection so in tune with each other’s emotions – it’s captivating to watch.”

Kate, who was a police officer for nearly 20 years, “found that like many of her colleagues, she had sometimes disregarded the importance of her wellbeing and self-care”, a spokesman for the charity said.

Kate added: “From my time in the police, I had first-hand experience of how pressured and mentally draining daily life can become.

“In the dictionary, wellbeing is defined as being comfortable, healthy and happy, and far too often we neglect our mental wellbeing. We can often overlook and fail to recognise our thoughts and feelings, making us miss opportunities to manage the pressures of daily life.

“Now in my new role, I am lucky enough to be able to champion donkeys and the beneficial donkey-assisted activity programmes available at our Leeds sanctuary.”

The officers came in two groups of six, to enjoy a “showcase presentation”, after which they met the herd.

“The groups went on to prepare and take part in elements of a donkey-assisted activity session, followed by some donkey enrichment, allowing everyone to gain an understanding of how valuable a good mental state is to both donkeys and humans,” the spokesman said.

“The morning concluded with each participant taking a donkey on a group mindful walk around the sanctuary’s sensory track.”

A third officer added: “I have never experienced anything like it, it was a delight and it left me feeling uplifted.”

Kate said the sanctuary lives up to its name.

“My friends at West Yorkshire Police gave overwhelmingly positive feedback about how visiting the donkeys helped them find some needed relaxation, and I’m so pleased we were able to offer them the opportunity to take time out from their busy frontline roles.”
