What a squad! Medal-winning veterans and rising stars feature on British showjumping World Championship shortlist

Medal-winning veterans and some new up-and-coming stars feature on the British showjumping shortlist for the Aachen World Championships (11 to 23 August).

One combination from the team that won silver at last year’s European Championships – Scott Brash and Hello Folie – is included in the list of 11 riders and 15 horses from which the final squad will be confirmed. The final squad of five combinations must be submitted to the FEI by 23 July, following a final meeting on or around 16 July.

The selection panel comprises chef d’equipe Di Lampard and non-voting chair of selectors Sarah Rowell and the aim is to select those most likely to achieve the objectives; of qualifying for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, and winning as many medals as possible.

The selection will of course take into account combination results, including in five-star Nations Cup and grands prix, this year and last.

Scott and Ben Maher, currently third and fourth in the Longines world rankings, look certain to feature in the world championships squad and both have three rides on the British showjumping shortlist. As well as Folie, with whom he also won individual silver last year, Scott has his Paris 2024 team gold medal-winning Hello Jefferson and the rising star Hello Mango, all three owned by Lady Pauline Harris and Lady Pauline Kirkham. Scott has been on flying form this year, winning five-star grands prix on all three horses.

Ben is named with his stalwarts Enjeu de Grisien and Point Break; he came fourth with the former in the Rolex Aachen grand prix this month and won the five-star grand prix in Rotterdam last week with the latter. He is also down with Catelly – owned as are the other two by Charlotte Rossetter and Pamela Wright – whom he has only been riding since May but with whom he was on the team that won the Longines League of Nations (LLN) in Rotterdam this month.

Harry Charles has with Scott and Ben been the backbone of recent British championship teams but has been rebuilding his string. He is named with another new ride; his own and wife Eve Jobs’ LT Holst Freda, whom he only started riding a month ago but with whom he jumped double clear in the Rotterdam LLN to help secure that British win, sealing the deal in a jump-off thriller.

Rising stars Adrian Whiteway and Chacco Volo have been impressing on Nations Cup teams and top-level shows since their CSI5* debut a year ago; they are also on the British showjumping shortlist for Aachen.

Joe Stockdale, who helped Britain to team bronze at the last World Championships is on the list, this time with Ebanking who has been competitive at five-star level this year. Jessica Mendoza, who shone as an individual at last year’s Europeans, is selected with Summerhouse, who was also on that winning team in Rotterdam. Matt Sampson is named with Un Secreto Z, the horse with whom he came fourth in his first five-star grand prix at Windsor last month, and won at the Hickstead Derby meeting – and whom Matt describes as the best in his string at the moment. Sienna Charles and home-bred Chawton were also on the winning team in Rotterdam, jumping clear to set up the jump-off.

Jack Whitaker, Jodie Hall McAteer and Tim Gredley are the riders who complete the British showjumping shortlist for Aachen – we will have to wait and see who makes the final cut.

Selection also takes into account results in other five-star and four-star competitions, as well as the standing of the competition, the quality of the field and reasons for any incomplete competition. Proof of ability to produce top performances on a given day and while under pressure are also important.

7 things you might not know about showjumping power couple Matt Sampson and Kara Chad

Soon after showjumping power couple Matt Sampson and Kara Chad moved into their first permanent base, in West Sussex, ready for the 2026 season, they invited H&H to pay a visit. We bring you seven facts you might not know about the pair, from what they’ve named their foals to their philosophy on jumping exercises.

1. Matt’s “horse of a lifetime” is Ebolensky (Lennie), a 17-year-old grey mare who won the London International grand prix in 2022. She has had two embryo transfer daughters, both by I’m Special De Muze, who are now six. Look out for them on the circuit – their names are Specialensky and Extralensky.

“They both have a super mentality and jump really well,” says Matt. “Lennie might have more foals – she took to it really well.”

2. Matt is a brilliant catch rider. He started riding James Davenport’s stallion Daniel, who is now 18, a couple of years ago, when he went to the Davenports for training before Hickstead.

“I didn’t have a horse for the bigger classes, so James said would I like to take Daniel,” Matt recalls. “I’d always loved that horse. So I jumped him over 1m20, then took him to the show and went on to ride him in all the big classes at places like Spruce Meadows and London with some fantastic results.” Matt still only rides Daniel at shows, an arrangement that clearly works very well indeed.

And he won the Snowball Stakes at the 2025 London International riding HMF Equestrian’s Balento CS, a horse he’d only ridden once or twice.

“I just borrowed him for the show,” Matt said. “He’s just a good horse, and good horses do special things.”

3. Matt and Kara are huge fans of turning their horses out. One of his top rides, Fabrice Dn, spends his whole winter break out in the field.

“He lives out as much as possible,” says Matt. “And at the end of the year he goes out for the winter. He loves it.”

4. The couple rarely practise jumping exercises at home, and almost never jump higher than 1m 30.

“We might use poles in front of a fence, but we don’t use specific exercises – I’ll barely ever use a grid exercise,” Matt says. “We start out with horses with a good technique and build up through good flatwork and strengthening. Sometimes I’ll build a course on the ground using poles and practise pace, adjustability and stride patterns without jumping.”

5. The name of the couple’s business, Maplepark Farms, is an amalgamation of their two backgrounds. Maple alludes to Kara’s Canadian nationality, while Matt grew up at his parents’ riding school and livery yard Parklands Equestrian Centre near Sheffield.

6. Matt left school at 12 years old – “because I was riding 17 ponies a day!”

“I’ve always been pony-mad; it’s all I’ve ever done,” he says. “I used to play ice hockey, roller hockey and rugby as well and one time when I broke my arm the only thing I really missed was riding, so Mum and Dad realised it was my thing so it’s been that ever since.”

7. The couple have two dogs. Harry is a Spanish rescue dog Matt picked up as a puppy when he was on the Sunshine Tour, who loves life in the truck on the show circuit, while French Bulldog Maple is the one who calls the shots.

And one more thing: keep an eye on Kara’s ride Chicago, who was bred by John Whitaker.

“We think he’s one of the best horses we’ve ever had the pleasure to work with,” says Matt. The LA28 Olympics beckons.

‘I’ve only sat on him once or twice!’ London roof lifted as crowd favourite wins with borrowed horse

The roof of the Excel must have been tugging at its moorings as London International Horse Show crowd favourite Matt Sampson won Saturday’s ranking class – with a horse he’d barely ridden before.

Matt and HMF Equestrian’s Balento CS put in a fabulous performance in the Snowball Stakes to pip Hickstead Derby winners Robert Whitaker and Gentlemen VH Veldhof by over a second.

After Donald Whitaker and the scopey Ulania 3 were unlucky to have four faults as first to go in the jump-off, Robert and Caroline Blatchford’s 19-year-old went round in polished, professional and super-speedy style to finish on 38.46sec.

But where Robert took out a stride on the long run from the first to the second, Matt did not, which meant he could come back tighter to the National Lottery vertical; instead taking one out to the last vertical, which no one else managed to do, finishing in 37.15sec to a huge roar from the crowd.

“I wasn’t sure about that last line!” Matt said. “I tried to go a bit wider to the oxer, then use his stride to maybe take one out, which I didn’t think many horses would be able to do. And luckily, it paid off.

“London is my favourite show, it’s amazing to win here and what we all want so to do it is a great feeling, and with a new horse like this, it’s great, for his owners and the whole team.”

This is Matt’s first show with the 14-year-old Balou Du Rouet stallion, usually ridden by up-and-coming young Brit Amelie Gachoud who trains with Matt and his fianceé Kara Chad, but they also notched up sixth place in Friday’s ranking class.

“I’ve just borrowed him for this show,” he said. “I’ve not really ridden him, sat on him once or twice, but another horse I was going to bring wasn’t feeling great so I said [Balento] is fit and well, would they like him to come. They said yes, and luckily it’s gone so well.”

Matt paid tribute to Balento’s big stride and his want to do the job but must also take credit for his own skill and horsemanship as this already looks like an established, trusting partnership.

“He’s just a good horse, and good horses do special things,” Matt said. “And that shows what heart they have and how much they love doing what they do, when you challenge them like that and they just grab the bit and go for it. He was loving it.”

Great Britain wins Spruce Meadows Nations Cup for first time in 30 years: ‘The spirit of this team is second to none’

For the first time in nearly 30 years, Great Britain’s showjumpers have triumphed in the BMO Nations Cup at the Spruce Meadows Masters, Canada.

The British quartet of Matt Sampson (Ebolensky), Ben Maher (Enjeu De Grisien), Joe Stockdale riding Ebanking and Donald Whitaker with Millfield Colette were the stand-out performers throughout the two-round competition, jumping three double clears between them.

They thrilled the crowds at this, the venue’s 50th anniversary, topping the leader board on a zero score. Great Britain’s victorious team were joined on the podium by runners-up Germany and third-placed USA, who both finished on a team score of four but were separated by cumulative time.

Great Britain’s Nations Cup showjumping victory after a 30-year hiatus

Great Britain last won the BMO Nations Cup in 1996 when the “Fab Four” of Nick Skelton (Showtime), Geoff Billington (It’s Otto), Michael Whitaker (Two Step) and John Whitaker (Welham) lifted the coveted trophy at the Calgary venue. Since its inauguration in 1977, Great Britain has now triumphed 11 times in the world famous BMO Nations Cup.

This time around, chef d’equipe Di Lampard led the next generation to victory with triple Olympic gold medallist Ben, last night’s record-breaking six bar winner Joe and European silver medal-winning rider Donald all jumping double clears. The contest was taken right to the wire, however, and victory was only sealed as the final rider of the competition, Donald Whitaker with Millfield Colette, brushed off immense pressure to produce yet another foot perfect performance and claim the €150,008 (£130,000) first prize, as well as the towering BMO silverware.

“The spirit of this team is second to none, it’s come together so well this year,” said Di Lampard. “Three members of this team [Donald, Ben and Matt] are the European silver medalists and we’ve been building, building… But to have the win here at Spruce Meadows – I’m so proud of them all.”

There was further British success on the penultimate day of the Spruce Meadows Masters, when Charlie Jones and Capitale 6 won the CSI2* grand prix. The action concludes with Sunday’s CPKC International grand prix presented by Rolex where showjumpers will be competing for the richest prize the sport has ever seen.

‘I’m ok if he’s ok’: British rider reflects on unexpected elimination at European Showjumping Championships

Great Britain’s Matt Sampson has reflected on his shock elimination on day two (17 July) of the Longines FEI European Showjumping Championships.

Matt and Medoc de Toxandria were second in for the Brits in today’s team round, after Ben Maher and Dallas Vegas Batilly got proceedings off to a great start with a clear.

Matt and the Gredley’s 13-year-old gelding set off looking confident after yesterday’s superb opening round, but the pair came into difficulty at the treble combination 8ABC.

Medoc made an awkward jump over part B and they were unable to regroup in time for part C, resulting in a run-out. On the second attempt Medoc had a repeat problem at part B, appearing to have lost some confidence, resulting in elimination.

“He was jumping fantastic and felt amazing. The warm-up was great. Then I think he just stumbled a little bit, either on take-off or landing,” said Matt.

“He kind of caught himself slightly, and it stopped us in our tracks a little bit for the oxer. He’s not a horse that ever sort of hesitates, he loves his job, so that’s the reason why I thought it would probably be okay the second time. But I think he lost his confidence a little.”

Matt said that Medoc is doing well.

“We’ve had him checked by the vet, and I’ve been with him since I jumped,” said Matt. “He’s absolutely fine and that’s the main thing for me.

“Showjumping is showjumping, it’s a sport that I like doing, but the reason I do it is because of the horses, so I’m ok if he’s ok.”

As there are four in a team, Matt’s result was the drop score for Great Britain today. The team remain in the lead overnight after Ben Maher, Donald Whitaker and Scott Brash jumped clear. All four team riders will be eligible to compete in the team final tomorrow (18 July).

Great Britain’s gold medal hopes stay alive at European Showjumping Championships – despite heart-in-the-mouth moment for one rider

Great Britain remains in the lead after day two at the Longines FEI European Showjumping Championships following a foot-perfect clear from Donald Whitaker and Millfield Colette and a fabulous – but heart-in-the-mouth – clear from Scott Brash and Hello Folie.

Donald and Colette were third to jump for Britain and the pair followed yesterday’s stunning performance (16 July) with another clear round. The pair now lie in second individually.

“I’m a bit relieved,” said Donald, after his round. “She was amazing as always, she tried her absolute best so I’m delighted. She’s in her happy place in there.”

The pressure was on Donald and Colette after Matt Sampson and Medoc de Toxandria were eliminated following issues at the treble combination. As there are four riders on a team, Matt’s round could be Great Britain’s drop score, but the three other scores had to count. And with Germany and Belgium so close behind Britain in the team rankings, anything but a clear would have dropped the British team down the order.

“I definitely needed to have some sort of a good round to keep ourselves in it. And thankfully, we did,” said Donald.

“I didn’t see Matt’s round as I was warming up, but he was very unlucky. Knowing Matt he will bounce back stronger than ever.”

Scott Brash at European Showjumping Championships: “I felt like an amateur”

The pressure continued on Scott Brash and Hello Folie when Germany posted their fourth clear of the team competition, thanks to Richard Vogel and United Touch S, who are now in the individual gold medal position. Scott also had to jump clear to keep Britain in the lead.

Although Scott is known for keeping his cool, no one expected him to lose his reins ahead of the combination, drawing a gasp from the crowd. Demonstrating their unbelievable partnership and faith in each other, Scott and Folie held it together to clear all three elements – and they came home with no penalties to add.

“I don’t know why, but I managed to lose my rein after the green oxer. I felt like an amateur in there today, but I managed just to grab it back at the right moment and asked Folie to jump the triple from where I was,” said Scott. “What an amazing attitude and fight and spirit she showed to be able to jump through that triple clear. I’m super proud of her.”

Scott said the 10-year-old mare was “incredible” in the ring.

“She felt really good. She does pull me a little bit, she’s just eager to please and get on with the job,” he said.

“I don’t really know what happened and I need to watch it back, whether she snatched and I just lost the rein. Then she didn’t really know she was going for the triple. I managed to grab the rein, but I was very deep coming in and just asked her to jump, and she responded so well.

“What was nice was that line obviously didn’t feel great, but she settled down and jumped the rest very good. So I think that shows how confident she is with me and we have a great partnership. Hopefully I will put her in a better place tomorrow.”

Scott acknowledged that Folie is green at this level – the Europeans is her first championship – but said she is feeling good ahead of the team final tomorrow (18 July). The pair are in fourth place individually; the individual medals will be decided on Sunday.

“Obviously it gets tougher each day, and they’re bigger each day. Today she warmed up fantastic, she started off really good and finished off really well, so there’s a lot of positives to take,” he said.

“She does give a lot of effort, so hopefully we still have enough energy in the tank for tomorrow, but she feels good just now. I’m very happy.”

Great Britain’s hopes are high for tomorrow.

“The team guys have been fantastic; Ben always delivers for us, through his whole career. Going first, he always puts us in a good place,” said Scott.

“It was unfortunate for Matt, I think it was just one of those things, but he’ll bounce back tomorrow. We’ll support him all we can, and I’m sure he’ll put in a result tomorrow for us. Then Don was amazing, clear when we really needed him, and Folie was just fantastic.

“It’s great team spirit. We’re all there for one another, and we’ll be fighting tomorrow, but there’s a lot still to do.”

European Showjumping Championships team standings

Great Britain holds the overnight lead on 3.96 penalties. Germany is second on 4.19, and Belgium third on 4.61. Ireland has climbed up to fourth on 8.39. The team final gets under way at 3.15pm UK time (4.15pm local time) tomorrow (Friday 18 July).

A super clear – and a heartbreaking elimination for Great Britain at the European Showjumping Championships

Ben Maher and Dallas Vegas Batilly returned to top form in today’s (17 July) team competition at the Longines FEI European Showjumping Championships – as Matt Sampson and Medoc de Toxandria suffered an uncharacteristic elimination.

Dallas Vegas Batilly, known at home as “Tilly”, looked as good as ever as she cruised round to post a textbook clear. Ben and Tilly had four-faults yesterday (16 July) and were Britain’s drop score, after Donald Whitaker, Scott Brash, and Matt posted clears.

“It was better today, not just the result, but she felt better,” said Ben.

“Yesterday it was quite late jumping for her, as it was for all the horses – she felt like she was more ready for her dinner than coming out to compete. She was very, very quiet, and uncharacteristically for her, made me work a little harder in a different respect.

“Today she had a lot more spring in her step and the jump was all there, which was great and a great start for the team. It was great to get a nice, smooth round. The combination she skipped a little bit going in, and I have to react quick with her, but other than that she jumped an excellent round, which gives me a lot of confidence.”

Next to jump for Great Britain was Matt Sampson and Medoc de Toxandria, who after yesterday’s high, faced a crushing low when the pair were eliminated at the treble combination 8ABC, just beyond the halfway stage of the course.

Medoc de Toxandria appeared to make a mistake as they jumped part B, then the pair were unable to regroup in time for part C, resulting in a run-out. When they came round to jump the combination again, Medoc de Toxandria once more struggled with part B and the pair were eliminated.

Donald Whitaker and Scott Brash are still to jump in today’s team round for Great Britain.

‘Absolutely delighted’: Britain powers into the lead at European Showjumping Championships on day one

Britain has had the best possible start to the European Showjumping Championships as the team is in the lead at the end of day one at Casas Novas Equestrian Center in A Coruña, Spain.

Matt Sampson (Medoc De Toxandria), Donald Whitaker (Millfield Colette), Scott Brash (Hello Folie) and Ben Maher (Dallas Vegas Batilly) top the 18 teams, with a total of 3.96 penalties.

“I couldn’t be more delighted with the whole squad and how they set about today,” said British Equestrian showjumping performance manager Di Lampard.

“Today is always a tricky day; when it’s a [speed class] everyone’s tempted to go fast but they all had their own plan. I’m absolutely delighted and we’re looking forward to the challenge to come.”

Donald and Reitsportanlage Dagobertshausen’s Millfield Colette were in the lead for some time; Ireland’s Daniel Coyle and Ariel Grange’s Legacy overtook them to take the individual lead, as did Richard Vogel and United Touch S for Germany, so they finish day one in third place.

Scott Brash and Hello Folie, owned by Lady Pauline Harris and Lady Pauline Kirkham, are in fifth place. Matt Sampson is 19th with Unex Competition Yard and Rachel and William Gredley’s Medoc De Toxandria, and Ben Maher 23rd with Charlotte Rossetter and Pamela Wright’s Dallas Vegas Batilly.

Germany is in second place at this early stage; Marcus Ehning (Coolio 42), Sophie Hinners (Iron Dames My Prins), Christian Kukuk (Just Be Gentle) and Richard and United are on a total of 4.19 faults. Belgium is third on 4.61 and Ireland seventh on 8.39.

The scores from today’s class have been converted into penalties so leaders Daniel Coyle and Legacy are on 0, Richard and United on 0.01 and Donald and Colette 0.67. All penalties carry through the week. The second round of jumping starts tomorrow (17 July) at 3pm local time (2pm BST).

‘I couldn’t be more happy’: British rider enters top 10 on European Championships debut with borrowed horse

Matt Sampson only took the reins on Tim Gredley’s championship ride Medoc De Toxandria in March of this year, but they opened Great Britain’s team challenge at the European Showjumping Championships in Spain with a superb clear that initially placed the duo in the top four individually.

“I couldn’t be more happy,” said Matt. “We had a good plan, and we stuck to it. Everything went our way today, so far. So I’m very, very happy with Medoc – he jumped amazing.”

Tim Gredley asked Matt to ride some of his horses while he was out with a knee injury earlier this year.

“Medoc is Tim’s horse and Tim still rides him,” said Matt, who currently sits in the top 10 on the leader board.”But it went really well riding Medoc at a few shows and then I got this opportunity for the European Showjumping Championships so I’m very grateful that Tim, who is back riding now, let me carry on riding him. So this is amazing.”

Medoc is looked after by groom Paul Drew, who travelled to Spain with the 13-year-old.

“I just ride Medoc at shows, so he lives with Tim, in the stable that he’s always lived in,” explained Matt. “So he’s kept very happy. Then I meet him at the shows and ride him there. So I’m very grateful for the team at home. They keep him good. Paul does a brilliant job.

“He’s a fantastic horse. His mindset is amazing,” continued Matt. “He’s very laid back. He gets a little bit excited when he first goes in, when he hears the bell, which is quite cool, and then he settles down and does his job, always to the best he can.”

European Showjumping Championships debut

Yorkshire-based Matt, 34, is competing at his first senior championship but was awarded the role of team pathfinder by chef d’equipe Di Lampard.

“I’m delighted to be here and for the opportunity. I’m very grateful to everyone that’s behind us,” said Matt.

The remaining riders competing in the British team are Donald Whitaker (Millfield Colette), Scott Brash (Hello Folie) and Ben Maher with Dallas Vegas Batilly.

Great Britain’s Jessica Mendoza started the day with a four-fault round on In The Air, competing as an individual.

Olympic heroes and rising stars named as first European entries list confirmed

Two of Britain’s Olympic 2024 gold medal-winning riders, and one of the horses, are on the list of nominated entries for the British European Showjumping Championships team.

Ben Maher and Dallas Vegas Batilly, who jumped clear in Versailles last year, are among the 10 combinations whose names will be submitted to the FEI for the event in Spain next month.

They are joined by Scott Brash, whose clear with Hello Jefferson secured that team gold, but who is named here with two other horses, and the Paris reserve rider Joe Stockdale, also with another horse.

Up-and-coming star Matt Sampson is included; it will be Matt’s championship debut if he starts in A Coruña, and a senior championship debut for Jessica Mendoza and Donald and Robert Whitaker, if they are selected for the final squad.

A British Equestrian spokesperson said selection decisions are subject to athlete and horse maintaining fitness and performance. The squad of five combinations who will travel to A Coruña, plus non-travelling reserves, will be announced on or around 25 June.

“The funding that the British Equestrian World Class Programme receives from the National Lottery and UK Sport is pivotal in preparing our teams for senior championships and supporting them on the ground,” she said.

“British Equestrian is also extremely grateful for the support we enjoy from our partners – Agria, Bates Saddles, D&H, NAF, SEIB and Toggi – and team suppliers – Equi-Trek and Lotus Romeo. We’re indebted for the year-round support they provide to the World Class Programme and British teams, which helps us to best prepare for senior championships.”

‘I’m a horseman before I’m a showjumper’: the horse-first mentality that underpins Matt Sampson’s success

Matt Sampson’s showjumping career is on an upwards trajectory. He has three top horses who have all had success at five-star level, and a string of up and coming rides, but there are still dreams to be realised.

Matt is gearing up for a busy summer, going back to his favourite stomping ground Spruce Meadows, while he also has his eyes on more Nations Cup team appearances.

“Dublin last year was a great experience, and we were third,” says Matt.

“There’s no better feeling than when you put the team jacket on. Somehow you just get a spring in your step, it’s a different feeling and everything changes. It’s like, ‘Right here we go, we’re doing this together.’ It’s an amazing feeling.”

Matt will also be scheduling in some time to support his home shows.

“I love the British shows; Hickstead, Windsor and London. Unfortunately Bolesworth is on when I’m in Calgary, but I love it there too,” he says.

“There’s other shows that shouldn’t be forgotten like Chepstow and Chard, it’s not super easy to get international riders to come from overseas for these internationals, but they’re doing a great job.

“There’s nothing better than riding at those shows at home, it’s the vibe and the people and the crowds and everything. I always try to come back and do those shows, no matter where I am because I think it’s super important to support them.”

“Showjumping is up and down; focus on the positives”

Matt’s upbeat personality is infectious and it’s easy to see how much he enjoys what he’s doing. But has this positive mindset always come naturally – and how does he deal with pressure?

“With showjumping it’s always a bit up and down; horses get injured or you have a few bad shows in a row, but I try to focus on the positive parts. I think it’s something that everyone has to work on a little bit with showjumping,” he explains.

“But I’ve always had the mentality that I’m a horseman before I’m a showjumper. And as long as the horses are good and healthy and everybody else is good and healthy, then it’s not the end of the world when the result doesn’t come.

“A lot of it is down to confidence, and I think it’s important for every rider to know that even riders doing five-star shows every week go through stages where you lose a bit of confidence, be it in your riding or plan – it’s human.”

But Matt admits he does enjoy the pressure and the thrill of riding in those big grand prix classes.

“It’s those butterflies when you’re at a big competition and it’s something you’ve been thinking about for a long time, then when you have the chance to actually do it, that’s when the adrenaline gets up. It’s a strange feeling, but I like it,” he laughs.

When it comes to success, Matt puts it down to the team around him and his parents Ruth and Sam.

“People ask me who taught me the most about horses and it was my parents. It’s all the small things that they told me that makes the biggest impact,” he says, adding that when it comes to horsey idols, there could only be one: John Whitaker.

“Without a doubt John is my hero, the way he manages his horses and rides them, and how they perform for him,” Matt says. “He can get out of a horse what nobody else can and I look up to not only as a rider, but as a person.

“He’s always there for advice, and normally his advice is so simple that you think it’s just not even advice, but it works.”

Looking beyond 2025, Matt still has dreams he wants to fulfil.

“I’ve not done a senior championship yet. I think the Olympics is the main goal for all of us who initially start competing seriously,” he says.

“It’s something that you dream about, especially as a kid. To do a senior championship and an Olympics are the two things that I really want to do.”

There’s also the small matter of a wedding to plan. Matt got down on one knee and proposed to Kara Chad, a Canadian showjumper, while the pair were on holiday in Canada in January.

“She said it was about time,” he laughs.

“I proposed in Whistler, which is a place Kara has been going skiing every year since she was a little kid and it’s her favourite place. It was really nice, and she said yes, so that was even better.

“We’re hoping to get married sometime next year, we’ve just got to try and fit it around shows!”

While trying to produce consistent results is naturally a big part of being an international rider, much goes on behind the scenes from a business perspective. Showjumper Matt Sampson and his fiancée Kara Chad, a successful Canadian rider who represented her country at the 2018 World Equestrian Games, run Maple Park Farms together.

“There’s quite a lot going on, but I love having the business. We have three people training with us, we have our competition horses, we’re breeding and we’re also selling,” explains Matt.

“We’re not a dealing stable by any means, but I like to produce a horse and find the right person for them. I get a real buzz out of seeing them go on to do good things together.”

And following in the footsteps of other power equestrian couples, Matt and Kara are proving to be a good team.

“We’re both striving to do the same thing, so I think it can only help to have two minds rather than one,” says Matt.

“We’re very lucky that it works, and we work well together with the horses. There’s times where I’ll have a horse and I’ll say it’s the perfect fit for Kara, and other times Kara will have a horse that’s a better fit for me, we’re not afraid to say that.”

“Good hacking and fields are our priority”

The life of a showjumper often means much time on the road, and Matt and Kara are no different, splitting time between Spain, Calgary and England.

“We’ve been based all over, but it’s worked and where we’ve been has always had good hacking and good fields – and that’s always a priority, more so than anything else,” says Matt.

“We strongly believe in keeping the horses in a place where they’re happy, and I think that shows in the ring. If they’re not happy, you can’t expect them to perform. I always say when they go in the ring they’ve got to feel like they’re the King and can conquer anything.”

The pair are now looking for a permanent base, although where home might become is still up in the air.

“It’s a hard decision and it’s about finding the right place for the business where it works, so we can do everything we still want to do,” says Matt.

Matt is a busy man, but running the business is a side that has come naturally to him.

“I’ve always had to do it to pay for my showjumping, and I’ve always bought and sold my own horses to try to then get better horses,” he explains.

“The end goal was to jump at five-star shows, so I’m used to doing the business side of things to help pay for that – it’s in my blood.”

How showjumper Matt Sampson broke through the ranks

Gaining entry to those coveted five-star shows is no mean feat and often discussed in the showjumping world, with limited entries available and a strict invitation system in place – not to mention costly entry fees.

While Matt is gaining entry to more five-star shows, admittedly it hasn’t been easy – but a trip to Spruce Meadows in 2021 became the turning point.

“It’s very difficult, especially when you’re sort of up and coming. I struggled for a couple of years; I’d have a horse going really well but then I couldn’t get into the top-level show to prove that the horse was what I thought he was, a five-star horse, so it was difficult in that sense,” he says.

“That’s why four years ago I decided to go to Spruce Meadows for the summer. I had a couple of good horses and I just felt that they were wasted at the shows that I could get into. It cost a lot of money to go to Calgary, but I could do the classes, so I went there a bit all in – I spent all my money to go, and then once I was there I had to win the money back to go home.

“But I got some ranking points, and it went really well and it opened a few doors when I got back. Luckily, it paid off in a really good way – it was a great thing, but it was risky!”

Matt went on to build up quite the affinity with the great Canadian venue. After success in 2021, he returned the following summer and racked up a phenomenal 17 wins, taking home $430,000 in prize-money, as well as being named Spruce Meadows’ Xeros rider of the year.

“I love it there, it’s a wonderful place. I grew up watching it on TV all the time and I just wanted to compete there,” says Matt.

“The first time I ever went there was when I went to visit Kara the first year we met, and seeing it in real life just made me determined to go there with horses. And the following year I did.

“It suits my style of riding, with the big arenas. I grew up hunting and doing a lot of cross-country, and I like that open space.”

“London is one of the best shows in the world”

Another show at which Matt is known to shine is London International. Every year he’s welcomed home with open arms by the crowd.

In 2022 he landed the grand prix with superstar Ebolensky, in 2023 he was named the show’s leading rider, and in 2024 he enjoyed another five-star win with Daniel – plus he made young rider Lilly McBride’s dreams come true when they stormed to victory in the mini major.

“London is 100% one of the best shows in the world,” says Matt.

“The crowd is incredible, and my horses seem to really like it there. I think everything about it is just wonderful, it’s so close to Christmas, and my family comes to watch, it’s great, I just love it.”

It’s no wonder the crowds get behind Matt – he’s personable, isn’t afraid to show a fun side, and he has a lot of time for young riders.

“I remember being that young rider going to Olympia with my Mum and Dad to watch. You can have that feeling that it’s impossible to ride there, but I remember my mum saying ‘Right, we’ve got to keep training!’ And we did,” he says.

“Stay motivated for the horses, not the results”

What is Matt’s advice for those wanting to follow in his footsteps?

“To young riders I would just say ‘work hard’. When I was young I always tried to take any opportunity, if somebody asked me to ride a horse, I didn’t even ask what he was, I was just like ‘Yep, when? I’ll do it now’. That was how I’ve always been, and I think that’s why I’ve ridden quite a lot of catch-ride horses.

“We didn’t have the means to be able to buy top horses so I worked for training when I was 16 to 18, and I was always thinking about getting better. I tried to keep that mindset that even when it’s not going great just to keep trying, and make the most of what horses you have at the time. Don’t over face a horse because you personally want to do a bigger class.

“It can be super difficult to get owners when you’re starting out, but as long as you stay motivated for the horses, rather than the results, things will pan out.”

When H&H caught up with British showjumper Matt Sampson he was taking some brief time out from his horses, hiking in Patagonia with his fiancée Kara Chad. He’d spent March on the Sunshine Tour in Vejer de La Frontera, Spain.

In recent years 34-year-old Matt has been plugging away, building an exciting string of top horses and promising rising stars, growing his and Kara’s business Maple Park Farms, and recording consistent results at the top level.

2024 was another solid year for Matt with 33 international wins – 10 of those at five-star level – plus a Nations Cup team appearance at Dublin Horse Show, where the Brits finished third.

“I think we had a great year and the horses were really good,” says Matt.

“I spent quite a bit of time building some young horses up, and we had some nice results. It’s a great feeling when you’ve been slowly producing a horse over a couple of years, and they show the belief you’ve had in them – it’s nearly the same feeling as winning a class.

“I had a great show at Windsor, and I also had some great times with Daniel. He won a five-star grand prix in Spruce Meadows, that was probably the highlight for me last year.”

Meet Matt Sampson’s top horses

Daniel is one of Matt’s three top horses, and it was a happy coincidence that brought them together.

“I’m really good friends with the Davenport family and Angelie Von Essen who own him, and it happened a bit by chance,” says Matt.

“I was going to a show in 2023, but I didn’t have a horse to jump in the bigger classes. They said he was fit and ready to go and asked if I’d like to take him. I did, and we just clicked really well.

“I rode him at a couple more shows that year, then last year I rode him more often and he was fantastic. He was double clear in the Windsor grand prix, then at Spruce Meadows I jumped in three grands prix and he was first, second and fourth. He did the whole summer series without a fence down.

“He’s just an amazing horse; he’s super easy and he’s been produced by those guys to perfection. We were third at the Nations Cup, he won at London International and he’s just been just fantastic.”

Matt’s other top-tier stars are 15-year-old Fabrice Dn (owned by Luis Alejandro Plascencia) and 16-year-old mare Ebolenksy (owned by Rachael Evison and Matt).

“Fabrice is the horse that I won my first five-star grand prix with. He’s very special,” says Matt. “He’s quite sensitive and sharp, he’s got a lot of blood and he’s a horse that spends a lot of time in the field. Every winter I’ll put him out with a friend for two or three months.

“He doesn’t do too many shows throughout the year and I try to pick the right ones for him which he’ll enjoy, which are mostly grass arenas. He’s just getting fit now and the plan is he’ll go back to Spruce Meadows again this summer.”

Ebolenksy (Lenny) is Matt’s longest partner. He took on the ride when the mare was eight.

“She’s been amazing all the way through her career,” says Matt. “She’s won so many classes, and given us so many good memories, she just always tries her best.”

“She’s similar to Fabrice in that she’s quite a sensitive, sharp horse, but she’s got a heart like a lion. When she’s in the ring she does everything she can to win or be clear.”

Ebolensky offspring

Matt has some promising up-and-coming horses including Ebolensky’s two five-year-old daughters Extralensky and Specialensky, both by stallion I’m Special De Muze.

“We’d always planned to breed from Lenny when she retires, but she had a period of time off so we decided to do it then by embryo transfer. She’s extremely well bred, so it made sense with her being such a good horse,” says Matt.

“They are just starting out in their careers. Specialensky had a foal so she was started a bit later, but Extralensky was double clear in the four-year-old championships last year. They’ve both had the winter off and are coming out again now.

“I’ve got a couple of others that I’m excited about, one is Pretty Pi’Que De’Luxe, who is a nine-year-old and she just did her first 1.50m recently.

“I also have Clayton Z, who is eight. I bought him as a five-year-old from Derek Morton. Every month he’s getting stronger and I have really big hopes that he’ll reach the top level.”

Matt Sampson’s search for a star

When it comes to picking the next star, Matt says he’s looking for a lot of character.

“For me it’s the jump and character. When I’ve bought young horses I’ve always thought if I like the feeling of the jump, then I can work on everything else,” he explains.

“That’s part of producing a good jumper. The training programme is to help them develop all the other skills that enable them to put it all together in the ring.”

Riders often talk about having a system, and while Matt says he has a base program, generally how he produces horses is very individual to each one.

“When they’re young we don’t jump them too much, and up until they’re six or seven they’ll spend more time out of the arena than in it,” he says.

“Maybe one horse won’t be ready to do the seven-year-old classes, so I do what they feel ready for,” he says. “And when I feel that they’re super comfortable with one height, we’ll move up to the next, and if they do that well we’ll maybe drop back down again for a bit.

“I really think about producing the horses on an individual plan to put them in the right place so that when they’re eight/nine they’re ready to go and do their job.

“When it comes to planning the year, I’ll play it a little bit by ear based on how the young horses are feeling.

“But with the older horses we’ll think about the bigger shows that will suit that horse, and we’ll make a good program leading up to those to give them the best chance of performing at the time, in a venue they feel at their best in.”

Now that the final curtain has fallen on this year’s London International Horse Show (18-22 December), let’s reflect on just some of the magic moments from this year’s five-day equine extravaganza.

From a fearless teenager clearing nearly 7ft to a stunning Fell stallion enjoying the spotlight and the legendary John Whitaker competing alongside his granddaughter in the international arena, we’ve loved every minute.

The world’s greatest grandfather

Young Evie Whitaker may have described her grandfather John Whitaker as “a bit slow” but in one of the most magical performances of the week at the London Horse Show, the pair teamed up to compete in Wednesday’s GS Equestrian Pony Club Mini Major Relay. “You can forget the Olympics and world championships, this is serious pressure,” reflected John of riding alongside his granddaughter.

The comeback of all comebacks at the London Horse Show

Lottie Fry and Glamourdale truly sparkled on the London International stage once again as they won back their 2022 title to top the FEI Dressage World Cup freestyle, presented by Bret Willson Dressage International Ltd and supported by Horse & Hound.

Grand prix hero makes winning return aged 21

Talking of veterans, we were delighted to see William Funnell’s former grand prix hero Billy Angelo back to his winning ways at the London International. Harry Skelton managed to completely out-horse his rivals by entering the ring for the Markel Jockeys Jumping in aid of the Injured Jockeys Fund on the super 21-year-old gelding, but as it was all for a great cause, nobody really minded. Oh, except, perhaps, for the ever-competitive Nico de Boinville: “It’s a bit like me riding Sprinter Sacre in a 0-100 handicap race [for low-level horses]!” he quipped.

‘Winning here gets better every year’: Sampson rockets to further London International success

“I’ve never met a horse who enjoys showjumping as much as me,” said a grinning Matt Sampson after extending his London International Horse Show winning steak on Thursday (19 December) with the flying grey Daniel..

The British showjumper teamed up with James Davenport’s 16-year-old stallion to win the CSI5* Christmas Pudding Stakes, building on his tremendous success in recent years and his Mini Major victory the previous day.

“We aim for the London International Horse Show all year – we’re very lucky to have this show in our country,” said Matt. “This is the best show in the world for us British riders – to get to ride here is one thing, to win a class here… Every year it gets better. I couldn’t be happier.”

Matt Sampson on winning at the London International: “Daniel makes my job easier”

Matt and Daniel rocketed round the 1.50m track set by Bernardo Costa Cabral for this speed class, soaring to the top of the leader board with a dazzling clear in 60.47sec. A high-calibre international field tried and failed to topple the British rider and in the end Matt won with a massive 3sec advantage over the runner-up, Frenchman Kevin Staut (Visconti Du Telman).

“Whether it’s 1.60m or 1.50m, Daniel always tries his heart out,” said Matt, who was joined at the ExCeL London on Thursday by his “lucky mascot”, his eight-year-old nephew Max, who hopes to follow in his successful uncle’s footsteps.

“Daniel is a pleasure to ride and he makes my job a lot easier. Today I just tried to do a round which I thought would suit him, because he’s doing the grand prix tomorrow [Friday, 20 December]. He’s not really a horse who likes to go in and do a slow, schooling round. He likes to go in and enjoy it. So I did a round I thought was comfortable for him, but without pushing too many boundaries, and luckily it was enough, it was great.

“It walked as quite an easy course but the fences came up a lot more quickly than it looked – it was a good course, there were faults in all sorts of different areas. So it ended up not being as fast a speed class as we thought it might.”

A top class showjumping horse

Daniel, a 16-year-old son of Heartbreaker, has been with owners James Davenport and Angelie von Essen since a two-year-old and Matt only started riding the flying grey last year.

“Daniel is incredible and I’m very fortunate to ride him, so thank you to James and Angelie for allowing me to have him,” said Matt.

While the flying grey is buzzy in the collecting ring and really lights up in the prize-giving with his ears pricked forward, Matt explained that he’s super easy at home and in the ring he’s just keen to get on with the job he loves.

“He gets so excited when he’s going in the ring or for the prize-giving, anything like that, but when he’s doing his job, he’s totally focussed,” revealed Matt. “He’s just a top class horse. Everything about him.

“He’s 16 years old now, so that’s just a massive credit to Davenport Stables for the way they’ve looked after him and produced him. I’m very lucky.”

Lightning quick pair win and John Whitaker jumps alongside his granddaughter in London: ‘Forget the Olympics, this is serious pressure’

The London International Horse Show showjumping classes kicked off on Wednesday (18 December) with a high-octane win for Matt Sampson and Lilly McBride in the GS Equestrian Pony Club Mini Major Relay.

Matt led with a super clear on Rachel Evison’s 12-year-old Curraghgraigue Obos Flight before handing over to 10-year-old Lilly, representing the Fermanagh branch of the Pony Club riding the buzzy little pony Poynstown Little Albert Einsten.

This super young rider, paying her first visit to the London International (LIHS) cut every corner at tremendous speed, earning a high-five from her senior counterpart after they rocketed home clear in 21.50sec – what turned out to be an unassailable lead in this super competitive contest.

Matt Sampson: “I don’t think I’ve ever tried so hard round a 1.20m course in my life!”

“I don’t think I’ve ever tried so hard round a 1.20m course in my life!” said Matt, a grand prix winner here in London in 2022. “When Lily introduced herself to me and said, ‘Hello, and don’t let me down’, I thought we were on to a winner!

“It was on my shoulders to make sure it all went well for Lilly so there was a lot more pressure. I always try to do these Mini Major classes because I was that kid at one point and there are so many others like them in the crowd – it’s important to know that anything is possible.”

Lilly has been riding since she was six and she described her first experience in the showjumping ring at the London International as “very special”, describing her lap of honour, during which she punched the air before exiting at high speed, as the absolute highlight. Having taken her family “a full 24hr” to get to central London from Northern Ireland, there was great delight at her success.

And the secret to this speedy duo’s triumph? Their matching hair colour, assessed redhead Matt.

“We’re Team Ginger,” he said.

John Whitaker teams up with granddaughter Evie in the showjumping ring at London International

Finishing just over half a second behind Matt and Lilly in second were Alex Leggott for the Zetland Pony Club, who was paired with Italy’s Lorenzo de Luca, while in third was Harry Kelly riding Paris for the North Derry Pony Club. His partner Sebastian Hughes on Colorado Volo were enjoying a slightly smaller track as a warm-up for their puissance performance on Wednesday evening.

Not far behind in sixth with a double clear between them was Evie Whitaker, daughter of Robert and Kate Whitaker, who competed with her grandfather John Whitaker at the London International.

Evie described her grandfather as “a bit slow” but paid tribute to her “special” pony Blue, who she has borrowed from her sister Millie and was beautifully bedecked with gold tinsel and stars.

“You can forget the Olympics and world championships, this is serious pressure,” reflected John.

Canadian showjumper Kara Chad and her partner, British rider Matt Sampson, are one of the sport’s favourite power couples, both equally talented and competitive, and their impressive results speak for themselves.

But while Matt has long been a familiar name to British showjumping fans, you may not be as familiar with 28-year-old Kara, currently ranked 151st in the world. She has represented her native Canada at Nations Cups, the 2018 World Equestrian Games and she was reserve rider for the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Kara grew up in Calgary, Canada, close to the world-famous Spruce Meadows venue, where she and Matt have amassed many successful results.

“The CSIO Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’ Tournament is exceptional. As a Canadian and a Calgarian, I am very proud of the show and what the organisers have put on, and the community that has been created over the years,” says Kara of the tournament, which runs from 4-8 September this year.

“This incredible event has hosted the very best international showjumping horses and riders. The calibre of the competition is very special for me, my family, and many Calgarians. Spruce Meadows is making great strides in modernising its facilities, from the course designs to the materials they use; they keep up with the showjumping trends. The International Ring is a big grass arena and requires riders to gallop and make sure their horses are responsive and confident.

“The jump-offs during the competitions are some of the best in the world,” she adds. “Riders can really get their horses going forward and galloping around the course. When competing at this level, your horse must trust you, be brave, and feel comfortable performing in such a fantastic atmosphere.

“I believe preparation comes from experience in the ring. Spruce Meadows hosts a summer circuit, and those who compete there over the summer tend to do well at the Masters Tournament because their horses are familiar with the arena and the fences. If riders can participate in those events, it serves as excellent preparation. Competing at other Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping Majors such as the CHIO Aachen, or at other big grass venues, provides great preparation for competing at Spruce Meadows.”

Talking about the legendary track set annually for the CPKC International grand prix presented by Rolex – reputed to be one of the most difficult in the world – Kara says, “Even though the grand prix isn’t until the afternoon, the course is usually set up in the morning. It’s quite interesting to watch riders walk it four or five times, analysing the best plan for themselves and their horse – it is something you don’t see often.

“Walking the course creates a really cool atmosphere with all the riders trying to approach it together, uncertain of what’s to come. It is super exciting!” she says.

Kara Chad on her partnership with “gifted horseman” Matt Sampson

Kara worked with Olympic gold medallist Eric Lamaze for several years and credits him for being “a big influence on my career”, but reveals how boyfriend of five-and-a-half years, Matt Sampson, continues to inspire her as they now run their showjumping business together.

“Matt is incredibly talented and I continue to learn from him every day,” says Kara. “He is my biggest supporter and provides constant emotional support. I love that we are able to compete together and against each other, and then at the end of the day have a debrief and plan for future competitions. While many more people have inspired me, Eric, my family, and Matt are my top three influences.

“We [Matt and I] learn something from each other every day! He is a fierce competitor and incredibly talented, I could not wish for a better partner. He knows horses so well and is a gifted horseman. We bounce ideas off each other all the time, which is extremely beneficial.

“It’s wonderful to have a committed partner by your side, going through all the ups and downs with you and someone who understands everything without needing words to explain,” she reveals. “That said, it’s not always easy to have your partner compete against you! I might have an excellent weekend while Matt doesn’t, or vice versa, which can be tough.

“Despite this, we have an incredible relationship and I’m fortunate to have Matt as a partner in life and in this sport. At times it can be very emotional, and having him to talk to is invaluable.”

A whole team striving for success

Kara also credits their “incredible team” – from the hard-working staff to owners and co-owners.

“There are so many in the equestrian community that have helped get both Matt and to where we are today,” she says. “We would not be here without our team’s hard work, dedication, and love for the horses. It sounds cliché but when things go well, it is not just mine or Matt’s success, it is our whole team’s.”

Kara’s top horse is 11-year-old five-star calibre Igor GPH (Harley x Crawford 5), with whom she recently won the CSI2* grand prix of Valkenswaard.

“You never truly know if your horse is capable of winning a Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping Major title until you are in the moment, but Igor GPH definitely has huge potential and I think he would rise to the occasion,” says Kara. “My other horse, Quidamo F, is a bit older. I have had him since he was seven years old, we}ve been together for about seven years now.

“We’ve competed in the CPKC ‘International’ grand prix presented by Rolex at the CSIO Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’ Tournament twice before, placing in one and unfortunately having a fault in the other. He is definitely capable of winning a Rolex Grand Slam Major but nowadays due to his age, we are selective about which competitions we enter him for. Spruce Meadows suits him perfectly, and he has had incredible results there, so I always plan to jump him at the venue.”

Kara Chad: “Women riders are getting stronger each year and are given more opportunities to advance”

Kara and Matt are also producing a raft of exciting younger horses for the future.

“Even when you feel you have the best plan; we are working with live animals, so anything can happen,” she says. “Regardless of all your hard work and dedication, it sometimes takes a bit of luck to win a Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping Major.

“Our sport is a lifetime sport and there is a reason for that – it takes a long time to put things together and develop horses so that they reach their best ability. There is so much involved in our sport, so I think that winning a Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping Major should be celebrated because it does not happen often during a rider’s career.

“Having been in this sport for so long, it’s easy to forget that it’s unusual for men and women to compete against each other,” says Kara. “I believe we give the men a real run for their money. Women riders are getting stronger each year and are given more opportunities to advance. I’m incredibly proud to be a female athlete in showjumping and I hope to inspire other female riders to do the same. In this sport, when working with horses, we are on an equal playing field which is great.”

So will Kara be bidding to win a Rolex Grand Slam Major of her own? She describes winning the Grand Slam, which only British showjumper Scott Brash has achieved, as “akin to winning an Olympic medal”.

“It doesn’t happen often, and when it does, riders should recognise what they have accomplished,” says Kara. “I hope to win not just one, but many. Fortunately, both Matt and I have time to reach this goal, as many riders in their sixties are still competing at the top level – so time is on our side!”

Spruce Meadows in Canada is like a second home to British showjumper Matt Sampson, and he headlines this week’s international showjumping news round-up after landing the venue’s CSI5* grand prix with great partner Daniel.

We also celebrate a landmark first LGCT win for Olivier Philippaerts in Sweden. Read on for this week’s highlights of international showjumping news and results.

Showjumping news: “If I were a horse, I would wish I was Daniel”

British showjumper Matt Sampson is enjoying another stellar season at Spruce Meadows, Canada, winning two CSI5* classes with 11-year-old mare One Whisper, but this week it was the turn of 16-year-old Dutch warmblood stallion Daniel, with whom he triumphed in Sunday’s 1.60m Pan American Cup presented by Rolex. Afterwards, Matt made an emotional tribute to “one of the most incredible horses” he has ever worked with, having teamed up together last year.

“I feel like it meant so much for Daniel to win,” said 34-year-old Matt, who immediately took congratulatory phone calls from his mother Ruth and girlfriend Kara Chad. “He deserves it. If I were a horse, I would wish I was him. He’s one of the most incredible horses I’ve ever had. I feel like, when we don’t win, it’s always my fault, so to win today feels amazing. It’s a dream come true.”

A dream comes true in Stockholm

After four seconds and two thirds during his career, Belgium showjumper Olivier Philippaerts finally landed his first Longines Global Champions Tour (LGCT) grand prix in Stockholm, Sweden, with H&M Miro. This victory also came with a ticket to the Super Grand Prix in Riyadh in November. It was also a milestone first podium for runner-up Wilma Hellström for the home side riding the one-eyed Cicci Bjn.

“This is something I’ve dreamed of,” said Olivier, following in the footsteps of his father Ludo and brother Nicola in achieving LGCT success. “I’ve been trying many, many times and finished second a few times but I have been thinking that hopefully one day I can pull it off. To do it in Stockholm, in front of all this crowd, in front of all the people from H&M that support us all the time, is something I’ve dreamed of.

“The most important thing for all of us is to work together – the people that work at home and at the show really work together to achieve these things, so today we are going to really enjoy it.”

Claiming third was Jérôme Guery riding the phenomenal 18-year-old stallion Quel Homme De Hus, back from injury and in the form of his life.

International showjumping news: a borrowed horse and a “naughty child”

At the World Equestrian Center in Ocala, Florida, the CSI4* Florida Coast Equipment grand prix went to USA rider Aaron Vale, who borrowed Gray’s Inn from his wife Mallory and won.

“I know the horse and see him every day, but she does 95% of the riding,” said Aaron, whose wife has been riding Gray’s Inn since the 10-year-old warmblood gelding was six. “It was her idea, she’s been asking me for a long time, ‘Do you want my horse?’ and I always said no.

“She’s been doing so well with him and knocking on the door. But this week, I didn’t have a horse, so she told me I was showing her horse – and the rest is history.”

Amanda Derbyshire continued her winning ways at the venue with success in the CSI2* grand prix qualifier on Cornwall BH.

“There were a couple of options to leave out, which I was a little unsure of, especially after watching the first rider,” said the US-based British rider, who also picked up placings with Renkum Oriana and new ride Vogue. “Cornwall BH is like my naughty child! It took me five years to win a class on him. He’s 16 now and I’ve had him since he was eight, but he’s been an incredible partner and always tries to leave the jumps up. Now that he’s older, we pick and choose our classes. In the past couple of weeks, he’s placed second, first and now another win. I couldn’t be prouder of him and our team – it takes a big village, and I couldn’t do it without them.”

Whitaker takes a brave route, an exciting ‘sassy little’ British prospect and former groom lands five-star grand prix

In this week’s international showjumping news round-up, we celebrate some mighty performances, particularly from cousins William Whitaker and Jack Whitaker, in the opening week of Bolesworth’s new international tour.

But we also look further afield to some notable Nations Cup podium finishes, a five-star win for a former groom ranked 1,813th in the world, and a rider winning a jump-off against herself. Read on for this week’s international showjumping news round-up and results.

Showjumping news: the big guns are out for a Bolesworth thriller

William Whitaker and Chacco’s Lando took full advantage of the slivers of opportunity left for the taking by their rivals to secure a British victory in Bolesworth’s high-class LeMieux CSI2* grand prix during week one of the inaugural Bolesworth International Equestrian Summer Festival presented by Al Shira’aa.

Ireland’s Shane Breen “knew the big guns were coming behind me” – setting the standard by taking the brave man’s route with Cato Boy over Rafael Suarez’s jump-off course. But William was braver – as last to go, he had to be – slicing across the oxer at fence five and delivering an all-round masterclass in jump-off riding to power ahead by 0.6sec.

“I was in the best position to know what everybody else did before I went in. Shane set a really good target – I knew that I had to give everything to try to beat him and luckily it paid off,” said William, of Old Lodge Stud’s talented 11-year-old Chacco-Blue son, who is looked after by Mia Allison and Sophie Price. “He’s a great horse and I feel now each month I get to know him a little bit better and exactly how he needs to be managed so that he jumps his best.”

Britain’s Christopher Smith was the first to come close to runner-up Shane’s impressive time on owner/breeder Nicola Barry’s nine-year-old mare Messarado Blue, and their performance earned them a place on the podium. Bolesworth results

Rider wins five-star jump-off against herself

In Canada, the CSI5* Spruce Meadows Continental meeting presented by Rolex hosted some of the world’s top riders and Erynn Ballard (main image) took the spotlight when achieving the rare feat of a one-two in Friday’s The Mustangs 1.55m grand prix qualifier.

The Olympic hopeful took top spot with Libido Van’t Hofken in a time of 42.86sec, finishing a fraction slower on the former Ben Maher ride Gakhir in 84.53sec. Her closest challenge came from Great Britain’s Matt Sampson on Daniel.

“My first five-star win [at Thunderbird Show Park last month] was the greatest day of my career so far. But everybody that rides a pony, whether you’re a little girl, a little boy, or a teenager, you do this to go to the Olympics. So certainly it’s in the forefront of my mind and I’ve got the horses to do it, but I still have a lot of work to do,” said Erynn, who could be part of Canada’s first-ever all-female Olympic team in Paris. “I’m always hashtagging ‘girl power’ and I think that it would be a great thing for the younger generation of the sport. But at the end of the day, no matter what, we’re all teammates.”

Matt Sampson had turned the tables the previous day, beating the Canadian to victory in the CSI5* AON Cup with new ride One Whisper.

Showjumping news: “She’s a proper horse,” says Jack Whitaker

Next in this week’s international showjumping news round-up, we’re back to Bolesworth, where a “sassy little” mare got everyone talking when winning the CSIYH1* Al Shira’aa seven-year-old final. It’s part of this sport’s magic to see a prospective future talent score that first significant win. When that success comes in the hands of one of Britain’s top rising stars, that magic is brushed with an extra sparkle. This year’s final was a real jewellery shop window, headed by the super mare Chique Rv Z in the hands of Britain’s Jack Whitaker, with Ireland’s Shane Breen and Konrad Obolensky a close second.

“We think she’s a proper one,” said Jack, who bought the Cicero Z daughter as a four-year-old with Jake Saywell. “She’s like a rubber ball – a real compact, sassy little mare. I don’t think she knows that she’s small! With her, I have to stick to my own plan, as I can’t just copy the strides that everyone else is doing. But I know that she’s quick and I know she can turn tight.”

Nations Cup thrillers: “I am proud of the team”

At the CSIO3* Longines EEF Nations Cup in Luxembourg, winners Belgium topped the podium on a zero score after a jump-off with Ireland. Great Britain finished in third.

Ireland was represented by brothers Max Wachman (Kilkenny) and Tom Wachman with Cathalina S, Michael Duffy on Clitschko 17 and Cian O’Connor producing a double clear with Fancy De Kergane before felling one pole more than Belgium representative Jeroen Appelen on Monte Blue PS against the clock.

“I suppose you could say that’s one that got away,” said Horse Sport Ireland high performance showjumping director Michael Blake. “The lads jumped great for the most part but one or two little mistakes have ultimately cost us. It is still an excellent result and, of course, congratulations to the Belgium team. When Tom and Cian, our final two riders, jumped their clears under pressure to apply pressure on the Belgians, they didn’t wilt to take us to the jump-off, where they got the job done.

“I am proud of the team. A Nations Cup runner-up finish is never to be sniffed at and it highlights the consistency we have in our programme.”

Third-placed Great Britain also secured a place in the semi-final in Deauville later this month.

“I’m delighted, it’s the first time Britain has qualified for the EEF semi-final in Deauville,” said Great Britain’s chef d’equipe Di Lampard, who led Mark Edwards (Flying Tinker II), Adrian Whiteway (Chacco Volo), Olli Fletcher (Hello William) and Robert Murphy on Kannem JA Z to the podium. “All four riders contributed with clear rounds and this squad is going to the four-star Nations Cup in Sopot, Poland, next week.

“I like the format for the EEF, where all the teams get to compete in the second round – unless they are eliminated in round one – and get to put the wrongs right. It’s in the right spirit and they gain valuable experience, whereas the standalone three-star teams only take the top eight [through to round two]. I’m looking forward to the Deauville semi-final and hopefully, the final in Warsaw.”

Great Britain and Ireland also finished fifth and sixth respectively in the Longines EEF series qualifier in Drammen, Norway, where another jump-off decided victory for Poland over hosts Norway, with Sweden third after torrential rain hit the venue during round two. It was the first time for eight years that Poland has won a Nations Cup. Each of the British quartet jumped a clear – Simon Crippen (Handsome), Leo Lamb on Gmail, Faye Sutton with Spider and Phillip Miller riding Don Royale, who went on to finish third in Sunday’s grand prix.

Showjumping news: Cannes success for Brash and Howley

We continue this week’s showjumping news round-up with the opening day of the Longines Global Champions Tour of Cannes, where Ireland’s Richard Howley and Petitfour VD Wareslage won a 1.45m speed class, toppling long-time leaders Ben Maher and Ginger-Blue.

“Heading in to beat Ben Maher always adds to the pressure,” Richard said. “Obviously he is a world-class rider, so it’s an honour to take the win over him today.”

Great Britain’s Scott Brash and Hello Valentino topped the GCL first qualifier by more than two seconds while Saturday night’s grand prix was won by Janne Friederike Meyer-Zimmermann on the appropriately named Messi Van’t Ruytershof in the city’s football stadium Stade Des Hesperides.

“I had a short second of a moment where I thought ‘now you just drop the rein and go’… and he made it, I am so thankful for this horse – what a horse,” she said.

A winning week for Amanda Derbyshire

US-based British showjumper Amanda Derbyshire sealed a spectacular week at the Tryon International with victory in the $120,000 CSI3* 1.50m grand prix on Cornwall BH. She topped a four-way jump-off to decide the honours, having also sealed victory with Otto BH in the two-phase.

A first ever grand prix success for former groom, ranked 1,813th in the world

A 29-year-old rider from Czechia made history with victory in Spruce Meadows’ five-star grand prix. Vaclav Stanek, who just two years ago was working as a groom at the venue, rode Quintin to an unexpected victory over Matt Sampson and Daniel.

“I didn’t even expect to get a clear round, let alone win my first five-star event,” said the 1,813th ranked Czech showjumper who is a former Rolex Young Riders Academy pupil. “I have watched Spruce Meadows since I was a little kid hoping one day I could ride here, but I would never even dream about winning here. I finally got my cooler in the best way possible.”

“I’m determined every day”: Kent Farrington triumphs in La Baule

Finally in this week’s showjumping news round-up, we celebrate US rider Kent Farrington’s brilliant win in the Rolex grand prix Ville de La Baule riding Greya after an exhilarating 11-way jump-off. The duo delivered the quickest of four double clears, beating fellow American Karl Cook (Caracole De La Roque), and Belgium’s Gregory Wathelet (Bond Jamesbond De Hay) took third.

“I’m determined every day,” said Kent. “Our sport has its ups and downs, because horses are animals with their own rhythm and needs. That’s what makes our sport so beautiful. You go from hero to zero very quickly, and that’s the game. I try to stay focused and not think about what might have happened or what might happen. I hadn’t really looked at Karl’s course, and this allowed me to follow my plan and secure the victory.”

Germany won the show’s CSIO5* Nations Cup and while Great Britain wasn’t involved in the team competition, individual representative at the show Lily Attwood and Karibou Horta won Saturday’s accumulator.

‘I only brought one horse here’: rider takes back-to-back Windsor Rolex grand prix wins with precision campaign

Martin Fuchs took a chance bringing only one horse to Royal Windsor but his faith in Leone Jei’s extraordinary talent was rewarded when he took home the Rolex grand prix.

It was the second consecutive year that the Swiss rider has secured the €125,000 first prize here, having piloted another exceptional horse, Connor Jei, to a 0.4sec win over Ben Maher in 2023.

“There’s usually a lot of pressure on the one class, not having any other chances, but I felt very comfortable after jumping on Friday,” Martin said. “I knew when I walked the course that the jump off would suit us very well and if I do a good job, then normally he’s going to jump two rounds clear.

“Taking back-to-back wins is obviously fantastic,” he added, “but it’s not only winning back-to-back, the whole atmosphere here is special.”

Bernardo Costa Cabral had built a delicate first round track that made subtle rather than overt demands. Poles fell throughout the course, although a vertical to oxer double on the final line, followed by a tall vertical at the final fence, elicited the most faults.

It was a testament to the quality of the 34-horse field, rather than soft course building, that 12 combinations jumped clear. Among them were three British riders: Rob Whitaker (Vermento), Matt Sampson (Daniel) and Tim Gredley (Imperial HBF).

‘Every jump came down’

“I was very happy with the course, I thought it rode very nicely — nicer than I expected,” admitted Bernardo, who had been aiming to get eight clears.

“In hindsight, I wouldn’t do anything differently, if they perform, fair dues to them. I wouldn’t do anything more to catch them because they were just very good horses with superb riders.

“The last line didn’t cause as many problems as I thought, it was a big vertical coming out on a flat five strides. We tried to get horses to jump well and catch riders on difficulties of control, not catch out the horses because they can jump.

“Every jump came down, even number one, and when that happens I am happy with the job.”

Brits take early lead

A world class jump off field of 12 was always going to provoke a dogfight against the clock and Matt Sampson’s impressive double clear on James Davenport’s 16-year-old stallion, which initially went into the lead from third draw, didn’t hold the advantage for long.

He was first toppled by Sweden’s Petronella Andersson (Odina Van Klapscheut), then Italy’s Giulia Martinengo Marquet (Delta Del’Isle) who axed almost 2sec. But her lead was wrested by Martin, who was in another league as he kept attacking on, tight, angled lines in a flawless rhythm to stop the clock in 41.40sec, 3.42sec out in front.

Both Gregory Wathelet (Bond Jamesbond De Hay) and Steve Guerdat (Dynamix de Belheme) came close, lodging 41.75sec and 41.86 sec respectively for second and third place, but couldn’t quite match Martin and the 12-year-old grey, who have strong recent form having won the CSI5* grand prix in Ocala, Florida in March.

While Rob Whitaker gave it a good try on his 11-year-old homebred King George V winner Vermento, he was way off the pace, posting 44.53sec for best of the Brits in fourth.

“I knew today it was going to be very difficult to be quicker than Martin and Steve and Gregory, so I did what I thought I could do with him,” Rob said. “He jumped very good in the jump off and if I was offered fourth place at the beginning of the week, I probably would have taken it.”

Matt’s double clear still secured him a €20,000 payout in seventh, while Tim Gredley, who executed a fluid, clear but steady round with his 11-year-old gelding, finished 6.73sec behind him in eighth, adding one time fault.

‘I finally got it!’: Brit celebrates first Royal Windsor 5* win after missing out by hundredths of a second twice

MATT Sampson had more than earned a victory lap of Royal Windsor Horse Show’s Castle Arena after coming second for two consecutive years in the show’s opening 1.45m speed class with the electric 15.2hh mare MGH Candy Girl.

After taking runner up to Victor Bettendorf by less than 1sec on his debut in the 5* here last year, history repeated itself for Matt and Candy when the combination came second to Shane Breen (Cato Boy) this time by an agonising 0.03sec margin.

But on Saturday morning they flipped their luck around to snatch a 0.04sec advantage from Laura Kraut (Calgary Tame) in a dramatic 1.50m jump off class, the CSI5* Defender Challenge Stakes.

“It was amazing to win. On my first year here I was second in one class with Candy and I was second in the same class again yesterday, so I finally got it!” said Matt, who has been riding Isabel Fox’s 11-year-old mare since taking over the ride from Gemma Stevens, who produced her, at the end of 2022.

“Yesterday I was 0.03sec off winning today I won by 0.04sec, so I suppose it works it’s way round!”

Riders fall foul of the clock

Under this class’s format, the top 10 of 28 starters make it through to the jump off and in some instances time proved more critical than rails, especially for Britain’s Sam Hutton (Desiree Dr Z), who jumped clear but didn’t make the cut after clocking five time penalties.

The eventual line up included two riders with time faults and four on four faults, with all penalties carried through to the second phase. Only four had clean sheets — Matt, Laura, Ben Maher with Enjeu De Grisien, who withdrew before the jump off, and Harrie Smolders, who earned final draw against the clock with the fastest first round clear on the brilliantly consistent Monaco N.O.P.

Harry Charles, carrying four faults through, set a bold lead from first to go after storming the long gallop to the final black vertical on his rising star, nine-year-old Bandit. It was another six riders before he was toppled from the top spot by Austrian Max Kuhner (Eic Julius Caesar), who jumped a strategic safe round to go in front on his one first round time penalty.

But the clears had the advantage, and knowing there were quick riders behind her, Laura Kraut delivered a classy performance on the 12-year-old chestnut gelding to set a brilliant lead.

‘She’s really fast but she is very small’

Matt certainly had the crowd biting their fingernails, as he scooted round on the little mare, flying boldly towards the last before briefly doubting his distance with a “woah” but still landing clean with 0.04sec in hand.

Last in Harrie had the advantage of stride and scope but perhaps with later classes, or the rest of a critical season, in mind, opted for a smooth round to finish almost 5sec slower.

“Going in, I just felt like I was against the clears, so my plan was to see what Laura did and she had an amazing round. I had to try my best to be faster and luckily I was just a little bit ahead,” Matt said.

“Candy is so careful and really fast but she is very small, so sometimes the strides that the other riders get I don’t manage to with her length of stride, but she’s fast enough that I can make up for it.

“I saw Harry [Charles] did eight big strides to the last and it walked 10. When I saw Laura do it, it looked like it got a bit long for her and I know her horse does have quite a decent stride so I thought it was going to be a bit longer for me than what it was but Candy really covered the ground. I had to shout ‘woah’ at the end to slow her down a little bit!”

Matt has two horses at the show and plans to contest Sunday’s Rolex grand prix with James Davenport and Angelie Von Essen’s stallion Daniel.

Huge-striding, ‘playful’ 17.2hh gelding lands Royal Windsor’s opening five-star: ‘I wasn’t expecting that’

Royal Windsor Horse Show’s opening CSI5* showjumping class on Friday (3 May) was won in impressive style by Ireland’s Shane Breen with 17.2hh gelding Cato Boy.

As torrential rain hit the Berkshire showground during the two-phase Pearl Stakes, Shane used the 10-year-old’s ground-devouring stride to edge a 0.03sec advantage over nippy Matt Sampson and MGH Candy Girl, who had to settle for the runner-up spot. Third went to Italy’s Lorenzo De Luca on Poden Farms’ stallion Cash Du Plessis.

“I wasn’t expecting that at all,” said Shane. “I watched Matt Sampson’s round and Cato has such a big stride, you can leave out strides on him, but I wasn’t expecting to beat Matt.

“The seven strides to the last fence was long enough, but the great thing about this horse is that when you commit, he commits with you – he never thinks ‘Oh no, this is too far’ and then not actually take you there. He’s lovely.”

Cato Boy: in the genes

Nikki Rutter Giaponne’s 10-year-old by Commissario, out of Bockmann’s Lord Pezi mare Lady Gaga, is a full brother to Martin Fuchs’ prolific winner, the year older Commissar Pezi, but Shane describes the equine brothers as “totally different”.

“Cato Boy arrived in Dubai as a three-year-old and he was shown to his owner Nikki and he was absolutely the wrong horse for her to buy just because he was far too big, but she absolutely fell in love with him,” explained Shane.

“I suggested she send him to my brother Trevor, so he produced him as a six- and seven-year-old. Then I bought out half from Nikki so we owned him together and he moved from Trevor to my yard two years ago and I’ve been trying to keep producing him since.

“He’s a lovely character, he’s a bit playful and he bounces around with me sometimes, but it’s nice that he’s enjoying himself,” said Shane.

“I had Cato Boy in Arezzo for three weeks, he jumped very well down there. He’s in great form this year. He’s 10 now and he’s maturing, he’s giving me a really good feeling.

“He’s very fresh, which is a good way to have them, so now it’s just a case of getting a bit more experience in a few more rings, just to get him crafty in the ring.

“It’s great to be here in Windsor, it’s a fantastic show. To open our account with a win is always good, we just have to hope for a couple more wins!”

Success breeds success, according to the popular sporting hypothesis, and we see it in bucketloads in this week’s international showjumping news round-up.

From Daniel Coyle’s back-to-back World Cup wins with brilliant mare Legacy, to the input of two of Great Britain’s greatest showjumpers Nick Skelton and William Funnell in other riders’ success, there’s been plenty to celebrate in the world of showjumping. Read on for a round-up of this week’s international showjumping news and results.

Showjumping news: back-to-back World Cup success for Coyle and Legacy

Fresh from their World Cup success in Leipzig last weekend, Irish showjumper Daniel Coyle and Ariel Grange’s super 14-year-old mare Legacy triumphed again with another extraordinary performance in a World Cup thriller in Amsterdam. The duo sliced nearly 3sec off the leading time set by Dutch rider Willem Greve on Highway TN NOP to take top spot.

“I’ve been doing dry January, I do it every year, but Ariel Grange said ‘Go and have a few beers’,” Daniel said. “So I had three after last Sunday’s win and I think we might have a few more tonight!”

Daniel explained that commitment and determination have been the key to his success.

“My brother Jordan won everything on ponies and I didn’t win so much, or so it seemed!” he said. “In any sport I suppose you just get stuck in and get on with it or you get left behind and give up. Thankfully it went the right way for me in the end.

“It goes back to riding those ponies at home in Ireland where it’s very competitive. I rode with my brothers and everybody else, even the likes of Richard Howley, who now also has won a few World Cups. I was always chasing those guys. It’s good to see now I can have some revenge and I guess I also had some great horses in my career in the smaller divisions that have taught me how to do jump-offs. If being competitive in a jump-off is all I can give back to Legacy then I’m happy enough with that.”

Daniel has formed a unique partnership with Dolly, as Legacy is known at home, who has now earned a few weeks off in Florida before five-star League Of Nations duty.

“For years, we weren’t really on the same page,” he explained. “She’d jump one fence very high and the next fence I’d ask her to jump – like a plank or something delicate – she’d knock it down and I’d be very confused as to why. But I feel now we are very much on the same page; we have a real understanding.

“We have a huge year ahead with the World Cup Final and the Olympics – and for sure we’ll be looking at both with her – but we have to have a conversation about it all. The main thing is to get her to the Olympic Games like she is right now and try to win a medal! She’s in the prime of her life, she’s got better, she’s got older, and maybe so have I.”

Two qualifying rounds remain in the Western European League series, after which the top 18 riders in the standings will earn a ticket to the World Cup Final in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in April.

Also enjoying a successful time in Amsterdam, British rider Matt Sampson landed a winning double of five-star speed classes with his London International winner MGH Candy Girl.

While Daniel Coyle is racking up multiple World Cup successes, amateur Mexican rider Jose Alberto Martinez Vazquez produced a career first World Cup qualifier riding Quinley in Puebla, Mexico.

“Quinley means everything to me. I’ve never had a horse like him before,” he said of the Holsteiner gelding he’s produced for 11 years from a four-year-old and with whom he represented Mexico at the 2022 World Championships. “Going to the last fence, you’re always thinking, ‘Is this enough?’ I had a bit of a miscommunication, but Quinley still went over it. I’m thankful.”

William Funnell leads UAE to first Nations Cup success, Great Britain third

Weeks after taking the helm as the new UAE chef d’equipe, William Funnell led the squad to a debut Nations Cup success at the CSIO4* Sharjah. Omar Abdul Aziz Al Marzooqi on Enjoy De La Mure, Abdullah Mohd Al Marri (BBS McGregor, formerly with Jack Ryan), Ali Hamad Al Kirbi with Jarlin De Torres and Abdullah Humaid Al Muhairi (Chacolu) didn’t hit a fence throughout two rounds, accumulating just two discarded time-faults to win on a zero score from Germany with five penalties on the card.

Great Britain finished third on 24 faults, represented by Joe Stockdale (Ebanking), Donald Whitaker on Millfield Colette, Skye Higgin riding Djordania Du Tillard and Jack Whitaker on Equine America Q Paravatti N, with Ireland finishing fifth.

British chef d’equipe Di Lampard said: “To finish on the podium was incredibly pleasing. We had two good results with young horses Ebanking and Djordania, which is encouraging for these partnerships for the future. We need to improve marginally as a team as we look forward to the first Longines League of Nations competition in Abu Dhabi. There was a slight lack of consistency, but we are looking at all the positives of yesterday.”

In more international showjumping news, Australian showjumper Rowan Willis flew to top spot of the CSI2* $100,000 Lugano Diamonds 1.45m grand prix on the Split Rock Jumping Tour at the TerraNova Equestrian Center in USA riding his home-bred mare Wellington Grey Goose (Corlensky x Grandira).

“Wellington Grey Goose is a real tryer and she’s fast,” said Rowan. ““I’ve done Split Rock shows ever since I came to America, and Derek Braun always puts on great shows. It’s really good for the competitors, has good prize money, and they have a fantastic facility here in Sarasota.”

$215,000 grand prix goes to Foster

Canadian showjumper Tiffany Foster won the Winter Equestrian Festival NetJets CSI4* grand prix riding Battlecry, a 10-year-old by Vigo D’Arsouilles x Latano, whom she owns with Artisan Farms and Kent Farrington.

“I’m really happy to finally check this one off,” said Tiffany, who was also awarded as the week’s leading international rider while Battlecry’s groom Kaytlyn Brown earned a $500 prize. “My horse has a bit of a right drift – just like every horse, he goes one way or the other – so, I thought the jump-off was actually going to suit him.”

Luciana Lossio took second for Brazil on Lady Louise Jmen, while the Nick Skelton-trained French rider Nina Mallevaey took third on Cartier SR.

“Nick told me I could have gone faster to the last, but I’m so happy with my horse,” said Nina. “He’s really trying to do everything for me. I’m going to try to have many more podiums like this.”

Great Britain’s Ben Maher took fourth on Faltic HB and Irish showjumper Cian O’Connor slotted into fifth on Maurice for owner Pat Crean.

‘I owe everything to Legacy’: World Cup podium finishers fight back to win London grand prix

Just over 24 hours after the World Cup title was snatched from them at the last minute, Daniel Coyle and Legacy fought back to take the London International Horse Show grand prix in epic style.

The Irish rider and the 13-year-old mare he owns with Ariel Grange pulled out all the stops to be crowned champions, with Ben Maher on Ginger-Blue in second and Jur Vrieling on Griffin Van De Heffinck third.

Fourth to go of eight strong jump-off contenders, Daniel threw down the gauntlet from the off, the super little Bon Ami mare showing all her scope and agility to make the awkward turns look easy, but also her ground-covering acceleration as she took a stride out to the central oxer.

They had gone into the lead, then next in was Ben, who had beaten Daniel the day before, and the mare with whom he already had one win under his belt this week. The Plot Blue 12-year-old turned like a 12.2hh, her effortless speed shouted home by the crowd – but ultimately they finished a whisker behind Daniel.

“These guys push everyone to the limits; Ben had a great win yesterday and deserved it but I really thought yesterday I’d be at least top two and ended third so I was really hungry for the win today,” Daniel said. “My mare’s jumped amazing so she deserves it.”

Daniel said the mare, with whom he represented Ireland at the 2022 World Championships, where they just missed out on team bronze, and the 2021 Europeans, is getting better with age and experience.

“She’s a horse of a lifetime,” he said, adding that the mare was fresh as she had only jumped the World Cup and grand prix in London.

“Four rounds of jumping and I couldn’t pick one over another; she gave her all, all week, and I’m just delighted to ride her,” he said. “When I went in I just wanted to nail it as I knew Ben was coming behind me and he won yesterday so I owed him one! That’s our mentality, we should be fighting in the ring, as friends, trying to do our best and trying to win.

“It’s an amazing show and I owe everything to Legacy and her owner Ariel, she’s been such a huge owner of mine and without her it wouldn’t all be possible.”

Daniel said Ben is always a threat in a jump-off, as he had proved the previous day.

“Ben’s such a fast rider; he’s an Olympic gold medallist. But I’m just delighted to be part of it and want them to know I’m here to play with them, not just be here.”

Ben sang the praises of the mare he owns with Jane Forbes Clark, with whom he had won on the opening day.

“She’s been second in this grand prix so we know she likes the ring and I rode the best round I could,” he said. “She’s a very fast horse. Daniel was able to do one less stride to the second fence, a plan that I couldn’t do. I slipped on a turnback at the top; I don’t like to blame other things but it definitely slowed me down and we have to deal with that as riders. I did my best but I just wasn’t fast enough today.

“All my horses have been great this week and it’s been fun to come here with the team of horses I have and compete and enjoy the week with my family at the same time.”

Jur was delighted with SF Equestrian BV’s 11-year-old, whom he had also jumped in the World Cup, for four faults. The big agile Castelino Van De Helle mare jumped a beautiful clear just over two seconds behind the winning time.

“I’m very, very happy,” Jur said. “She’s a young horse who doesn’t have the experience of these classes. Yesterday she jumped fantastic and then today – I’m very happy with her.

“She’s very light in the mouth; I ride her in a really soft leather bit. She’s very sensitive but getting better and better.”

Matt Sampson, who finished sixth in the World Cup and second in the snowflake stakes on his 2022 London grand prix winner Ebolensky, and notched up a win, a third and a fourth place on MGH Candy Girl, was named leading rider of the show

“It’s incredible,” he said. “This show’s amazing and to be leading rider is great for everyone; the team at home, everyone working hard, my groom, my girlfriend, my owners, it’s what we all work for. This is the best show in the world and any result we get here is great. So to have a consistent week like that and all the horses to be great is brilliant.”

Ben Maher scored an opening win at the Spruce Meadows Masters on the horse he bought after spotting him on TV at the venue last year – ahead of the Brits’ Nations Cup team appearance.

Olympic champion Ben Maher soared to victory in Calgary, Canada, with Exit Remo in the 1.50m TELUS Cup yesterday (6 September) in the Spruce Meadows international ring. 15 combinations came forward to the jump-off, where Ireland’s Denis Lynch set the pace with a speedy clear on 14-year-old gelding Brooklyn Heights on 40.82sec. But Ben held nothing back to snatch the lead on Exit Remo on 39.98sec. Ben was also fourth with nine-year-old gelding Enjeu De Grisien.

Ben said it was “amazing” to have a victory under his belt at the start of the show – especially as he had not been around to ride Exit Remo last week while he was at the Europeans in Milan with Faltic HB, where the pair finished fourth individually. He credited his groom Kirsty for riding Exit Remo in the days leading up to Spruce Meadows, and said the San Remo gelding felt in “perfect form”.

Exit Remo is no stranger to the big ring at Spruce Meadows, having been third with the Netherlands’ Patrick Lemmen in the Nations Cup event last year. This was the performance that caught Ben’s eye.

“I was at home last year watching and wanting to be here and we were looking for a horse with a bit more experience, and so we bought him just after Spruce Meadows,” said Ben, who co-owns the 14-year-old gelding with Charlotte Rossetter and Pamela Wright.

“I thought he was an older, worldly horse, but actually he’s sensitive. He’ll like this today, because it wasn’t as big as some of the competitions are going to get in the week, and he gets confidence from a round like that and he really grows into himself. So he wasn’t quite the horse I thought he was in the beginning, he has that sensitive side, but he’s a very easy horse to handle; he rides in a snaffle, and he makes my life pretty easy.”

The pair have had some notable success this summer, including being part of Britain’s historic victory at the Hickstead Nations Cup, and third at the Brussels Nations Cup leg. Ben will take Exit Remo forward to the team event on Saturday (9 September), in what will be the Brits’ first team Spruce Meadow appearance for years. They will be joined by teammates Sameh El Dahan and WKD Toronto, Matt Sampson and Equine America Ivanhoe GPH, and John Whitaker and Equine America Unick Du Francport.

Asked how it feels to be joining John Whitaker on a team at Spruce Meadows, where John holds legendary status, Ben joked that the 68-year-old “just doesn’t want to give up”.

“I think he might still be here in another 15 years,“ he said. “My son’s only just over a year old and he’ll probably be riding with John Whitaker on a team in years to come.”

Matt Sampson scored another win for the Brits in the Spruce Meadows international arena, following his phenomenal winning streak at the venue last summer, to take victory in the one-round 1.45m Cardel Homes Cup with 13-year-old gelding Fabrice DN, on 61.27sec. He also won the 1.40m Richardson Wealth Cup with 11-year-old gelding Curraghgraigue Obos Flight.

King Lepantino franked his name as one to watch with a win in the young horse grand prix at the 2023 Longines Royal International Horse Show.

This promising eight-year-old, ridden by Britain’s Matt Sampson, has not touched a pole all week and capped his first visit to Hickstead with victory in Sunday’s Clipmyhorse.tv CSIYH1* grand prix.

Runners up Nicole Lockhead Andereson and the seven-year-old Conthargos PS – who won in the Longines main arena on Friday – held the lead before the fences were raised for the eight-year-old horses. Matt and the scopey Arezzo VDL son shaved almost a second off the pair’s time, to collect their sash.

“He shows all the signs of a five-star grand prix horse,” said Matt.

“He has a lot of qualities. He’s ultra careful – he’s jumped double clear every day this week, he always jumps clear. One thing for me that really makes him special is when I ask him any questions he does everything in his body to answer those.

“Every time he jumps he gets better and his attitude is amazing. I’m very lucky to have him.”

This bay, owned by Cumberland Acres, joined Matt at the start of last year, having been successfully campaigned by Poland’s Marek Lewicki, and his FEI record is awash with clear rounds.

“He’s an incredible horse, I’m very lucky to have him. He’s so careful, that’s the biggest he’s ever done and he just takes it all in his stride,” said Matt.

“It’s so good to have this class for the up-and-coming horses, it means they are not going directly into the five-star classes, which is overwhelming for them sometimes. To have this, where they naturally progress over the week, it’s a credit to Lizzie Bunn and everyone at Hickstead – not many five-stars put on a class like that – for us as riders, it’s amazing.”

On beating two of Lizzie’s own horses in the class, Matt joked: “That was dangerous – but I’m going to buy her a bottle of champagne and hopefully she will forget about it!”

Friday morning’s 1.45m Agria Royal International Stakes resulted in a whitewash win for 26-year-old German rider Richard Vogel with a relatively new ride, 14-year-old tailless mare Evermeta (Mr Blue x Nimmerdor). The winning combination looked superb, rocketing round the corners and covering the Hickstead turf with ease, but the rider initially needed persuading to take the reins on the speedy mare.

“I’d like to say thank you to my horse – she’s a great fighter,” said Richard. “We’ve only been together for four or five months, but our partnership is going very well. Her owner, who I ride other horses for, always said we’d be a very good match and I doubted it a bit in the beginning, because I only saw videos of her. But he convinced me to give it a try. The first time I rode her I liked her very much because she’s such a fighter, with a great mind.”

Explaining about her lack of a tail, Richard said: “She’s never had one, so we don’t know what happened to it – we left it at home!”

A field of 40 lined up for the Agria International Stakes but from an early draw Richard set a target that outfoxed everyone else – second placed Matt Sampson was some 3sec adrift with Fabrice DN while Joe Stockdale took third on Equine Rescue Services Kandleford, a further second behind.

“It’s our first time here at Hickstead and it’s a really special feeling, you can feel the tradition of the show,” said Richard, who qualified for this year’s World Cup Final and has sprung up the world rankings in recent years to now sit 24th. “Yesterday we were a bit overwhelmed but today was good.

“Fences one and two came up a bit short, but then the rest of the course came up really well. She really wanted to go today so I left her to it in that rhythm. She’s generally a fast horse so we were lucky today. She doesn’t lose time anywhere, she’s not the most patient horse! But when she sees a fence, she’s like ‘Where’s the next one?’

“This is her level – I don’t think she’ll be a 1.60m horse, but at that level she always tries her best. So hopefully she can get some more good results,” Richard concluded.

The Royal International showjumping continues on Saturday, with the feature class, the Longines King George V Gold Cup on Sunday.

Keeping it natural: barefoot, bitless mare who lives out wins 5* at Royal Windsor

Royal Windsor Horse Show debutant Victor Bettendorf of Luxembourg blitzed the opening CSI5* jumping class from a late draw with his barefoot and bitless mare Big Star Des Forets, who lives out in a herd at home.

The 33-year-old rider has been hoping to jump at this show for several years and after a successful 2022, where he won 54 international classes, leaving him currently 28^th in the Longines world rankings, he was able to make his first appearance.

While some were using the Defender Stakes as a warm-up, Victor was one of those out to win this 1.45m two-phase.

Hopes of a home win had initially looked high when John Whitaker set a decent target with Paul Barker’s stallion Green Grass but the lead then changed hands in rapid succession.

Portugal’s Duarte Seabra snipped 0.04 sec with the 13-year-old Irish Sports Horse HHS Washington, before Matt Sampson and MGH Candy girl shot to a 1.58sec advantage.

Just three from the end of 32 starters, Matt’s hopes of a win were dashed by an attacking round from Victor and this keen and careful mare, who found 0.93sec of ground.

The relatively new partnership joined forces in January and got to know each other in Vilamoura. They have come to Windsor fresh from a win in the 2* grand prix in Deauville.

“I have always loved her for two years and tried to buy her but it was difficult to get her. Then we found a solution we were happy with,” Victor said.

“She has a lot of blood and suits my riding style — she’s very careful and has the right mindset, she’ll fight for you.”

The 12-year-old Selle Francais mare has slotted in well with Victor’s regime, where all his horses are kept barefoot and in small herds of five to 10.

“I feel they’re much more healthy this way,” he said. “The sport is really something not natural, so at home I try to give them the possibility to be as natural as possible and put them out in groups so they can socialise.”

Victor also prefers to ride his horses in a hackamore.

“It’s my favourite bridle, so I always try it on every horse and if it’s working, then I go with that. I think it’s to do with the feeling — ever rider has a bit they like and this is the one that suits my riding,” he explained.

Matt Sampson finished best of the Brits in the class, setting himself up for a promising week, where he will also be riding Ebolensky, who won the grand prix at the London International Horse Show last year.

He took over the ride on MGH Candy Girl from Gemma Stevens, who has produced her through the ranks, in January.

“She won a 1.50m class in Sentower Park last week and jumped really good on the Sunshine Tour which helped me get to know her. She’s brilliant, I love her.

“She’s really my type of horse so was quite easy to get used to. She’s got loads of blood and she’s feisty. She loved it out there today. Gemma did an amazing job with her so I’m now reaping the benefits,” Matt said.

Every once in a while a jump-off leaves you speechless and Sunday’s Rolex grand prix at The Dutch Masters was truly exceptional. The prospect of having another rider continuing their journey for the Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping is brilliant news for the sport.

Elsewhere, we watched Irish riders clear 1.85m in a Spanish six-bar and win a Dubai grand prix, while Great Britain’s James Smith continued his simply astounding run with grand prix victory on the Sunshine Tour. Here is your weekly round-up of international showjumping news and results.

Fifty shades of scopey

Irish showjumper Ciaran Nallon rode the nine-year-old Fifty Shades Of Grey (pictured, main image) over a 1.85m final fence to win the six-bar on the Andalucia Sunshine Tour. Thirteen combinations lined up but the Irish duo were the only faultless performers after the fourth round. At the show, British rider Matt Sampson also won a ranking class riding the 14-year-old mare Ebolensky.

Breen’s grand prix success

Trevor Breen and the super mare Germaine W sealed a brilliant run in the UAE with victory in the final CSI2* grand prix at the Emirates Equestrian Centre in Dubai. Drawn fourth in the nine-way jump-off, the pair swooped home fastest of the four double clears.

“Germaine has been in super form the whole trip so I’m delighted,” Trevor told H&H. “She did two Nations Cups really well, we finished second in one, third in the other, we capped off the five-star competitions with a third in the grand prix, then she won the two-star grand prix here. I can’t ask for more than that.

“The time allowed was quite tight in round one and there were a few riders clear with time faults, my brother Shane Breen [Can Ya Makan] was one of them, so it was a tough first round. I watched a couple go in the jump-off, but I had my plan and there were a couple of fast guys after me which made me go for it. So I did a couple of leave-out strides from fence one to two and to the last fence, so I think I really nicked it there.”

Trevor describes Mandy Hall’s mare, a five-star winner in Dublin last year, as “a great horse for me”.

“She loved Dubai,” said Trevor, who plans to target Royal Windsor next with Germaine W. “She likes the sun and she just seemed to get better and better out there.”

British grand prix riders are separated by just one hundredth of a second

The CSI4* grand prix on week five of the Andalucia Sunshine Tour resulted in a British one-two, with James Smith (Arkuga) and Karl Robins (Equine America G Camille HBF) separated by just 0.01sec. James admitted he had to look twice at the score board after his round, not least because he thought he’d knocked the first fence down in the nine-way jump-off.

“It was close! Arkuga jumped a bit to the side over the first fence and I half had it in my head that he’d knocked it down, but when I came back round everyone was shouting for me,” James told H&H. “Luckily it worked out – I had to look twice at the clock though because I still wasn’t sure!

“I’m delighted to get a big win, he’s been so consistent,” James added of the Renwicks’ 12-year-old home-bred – by Arko III out of Laura’s multi-winning mare Beluga – who was named “Messi” by their football-loving son, Jack.

“Big thanks to the Renwicks for letting me ride him, he’s naturally fast which makes everything so much easier. That’s probably the biggest grand prix track we’ve jumped so far and he just takes it in his stride. He has a great attitude – he wants to do it.”

Arkuga is looked after by Nikki Park and delighted owner Laura said: “We are so incredibly proud to have bred this superstar who has formed such a brilliant partnership with James over the last few months. Over the moon is an understatement!”

Ward keeps his Grand Slam dream alive

All roads now lead to Aachen this summer for US showjumper McLain Ward and the outstanding mare HH Azur. They won a second consecutive leg of the Rolex Grand Slam at The Dutch Masters in the Netherlands after one of the sport’s most spectacular jump-offs.

“I am so proud of my team and my horse – and a little proud of myself,” said McLain, who is the first rider since Scott Brash in 2015 to claim two consecutive Majors in the now four-event series. “The Rolex Grand Slam of Showjumping has truly raised the bar of the sport and winning a Major is one of the greatest moments in a rider’s career.”

From a stellar line-up that included eight of the top 10 riders in the world, a mammoth field of 16 jumped clear in round one of Sunday’s Rolex grand prix. The track set by Louis Konickx had championship dimensions but even in round two, these world-class combinations made light work of the challenge.

The jump-off ignited straight away with the opening riders coming out all guns blazing. Drawn fourth, McLain eclipsed the leading time set by Julien Epaillard of France riding Donatello D’Auge, rocketing home in 37.86sec. He had a few anxious moments as Simon Delestre (Cayman Jolly Jumper) scorched round in typical style and the Frenchman was up on the clock, only to hit the final Rolex oxer, dropping them to 10th behind the nine double clears. Less than a second split the top five riders, with Julien taking second and world number one Henrik von Eckermann finishing third on the incomparable King Edward.

McLain had travelled from the US, where he has been competing at Florida’s Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF), for the event and was stunned by the turn of events, which keeps his Rolex Grand Slam dream alive in this, its 10th year.

“I don’t think it has quite sunk in yet – it was a lot of stress having to watch the remaining 12 riders in the jump-off,” said McLain, who picked up a hefty €330,000 (just shy of £292,000) first prize. “The level here is so high and I think later tonight I will realise what we have achieved.”

McLain’s previous success came in the Rolex grand prix of Geneva in December, again with “Annie”.

“She is smarter than everybody else and is truly a queen,” he said. “I think she understands what is happening and really rises to the moment. She loves her job and the partnership that we have created is truly so special.

“She is 17 now, so she does not compete as often any more – instead we just aim her at the most important competitions. She has an incredible physical ability, but what makes her truly stand out is her character. She is a warrior at heart. I use the term ‘Queen’ when referring to her, as she encapsulates every aspect of that term. Two years ago, I thought that it was the end of her career as she had several injuries, but she overcame them. At the beginning of the 2022 season, she was feeling better than ever, and we made the decision to keep competing her and then assess her later on in the season. She ended up having the best year of her career so far.

“As long as she is still in love with the sport and happy, we will continue competing. I love spending time with her, whether that is hacking, training or competing – she is such a brilliant horse.”

Young British superstars Harry Charles (Balou Du Reventon) and Joe Stockdale (Equine America Cacharel) both reached the jump-off for the Rolex grand prix, finishing with eight and 12 faults respectively, and both enjoyed a string of excellent placings throughout this five-star show.

‘We live to have moments like this’

Daniel Bluman of Israel rode Ladriano Z to victory in the $425,000 Wellington Equestrian Realty CSI5* grand prix during week nine of the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) in Florida, four years after winning the same event in 2019. Shane Sweetnam took second on James Kann Cruz, with Karl Cook third on the 13-year-old mare Kalinka Van’t Zorgvliet.

“I watched Shane’s round and his horse and mine are both big and scopey, so I tried to do the same as him and edge him in a couple places,” said Daniel.

“At this time of the year, you have some of the greatest riders in the world here for the season so it’s very intense. We live to have moments like this where you’re competing against people you really admire and horses you really like. It was just the right group in the jump-off and I was really motivated to win it and when I crossed the timers I had a feeling I had.”

‘I truly thought I had no chance’: milestone 5* win for Lebanese rider

Lebanese rider Jad Dana and 13-year-old After Eight enjoyed a milestone first five-star win in WEF’s 1.50m classic, beating speedy Irish showjumper Darragh Kenny, who finished second and third with Vancouver Dreams and Chic Chic respectively.

“Even though my mare is very fast, the riders today had so much experience and they are incredibly talented,” said Jad, who trains with US Olympic team gold medallist Leslie Howard. “I truly thought I had no chance. I was happy just to be in the jump-off. This mare tried her heart out for me today.

“She does everything because of her huge heart. I love her so much. I have no words. To win a five-star is absolutely a dream come true.”

Irish success continued at WEF when Bertram Allen and Aiden McGrory’s Pacino Amiro triumphed in Thursday’s CSI5* Challenge Cup. He was up against countryman Darragh Kenny on Vlock Show Stables’ Chic Chic and US rider Schuyler Riley (Robin De Ponthual) in a three-way jump-off and, from second draw, posted the winning time of 36.94sec.

“I’ve never seen a WEF Challenge here where only three were clear in the first round, so it was a much more tactical jump-off than normal,” said Bertram. “It was a huge advantage going after Darragh because I saw one or two places in his jump-off where I could get the better of him if I left the rails up.”

Hickstead Derby victor makes winning return and London Horse Show heroes strike again

Equine golden oldies, including the 17-year-old Hickstead Derby winner Can Ya Makan, were making headlines from as far afield as Florida to the UAE and Spain as teenage horses captured grands prix, with US rider Mclain Ward stating his horses’ longevity was a “great testament” to his team.

Ebolensky and Sampson top Spanish grand prix

Competing in her first grand prix since winning the final day’s feature class at the London International, Ebolensky proved she’s back to her brilliant best when winning the CSI4* Andalucia Sunshine Tour Horseware Big Tour 1.55m grand prix with the fastest of only two double clears (pictured top).

Matt and the Evison family’s 14-year-old Clinton mare stopped the clock in 39.68sec, beating Germany’s Kendra Brinkop (In Time) in a nine-way jump-off where their rivals all faulted. Scott Brash and new ride Hello Valentino finished runners-up in the medium tour equivalent in Vejer De La Frontera.

‘He’s taken me to the Olympics and World Championships’

Bertram Allen and the brilliant 11-year-old Pacino Amiro (pictured below) landed Thursday’s five-star jump-off class at the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) in Florida. From a starting field of 54, the Irishman won over tracks set by Frank Rothenburger, where a tight time allowed in round one caught out several combinations.

“I knew going in that I had to have a good round, but I didn’t want to overdo it today with the grand prix coming up on Saturday,” explained Bertram, who beat his countryman Conor Swail (Count Me In) into the runner-up spot with Laura Kraut third on Baloutinue. “My plan was to be quick early on because I knew if I caught the first two fences well that my horse is as quick as any other.

“He has really been a fantastic horse for me; he is only 11, but he’s already been to the Olympics, the World [Championships] and won a five-star grand prix here.”

Simpson’s speedy success and the winning return of Can Ya Makan

England-based Irish showjumper David Simpson landed the CSI2* Longines Sharjah grand prix in the UAE riding the exciting eight-year-old Pjotr Van De Kruishoeve. Shane Breen was also a winner earlier in the week riding his Hickstead Derby hero Can Ya Makan.

‘Their health is a great testament to my team’

US rider Mclain Ward landed a big class double at WEF with a pair of teenage horses, crediting the longevity of his top-flight string to his team’s careful management. His first victory came in Saturday night’s grand prix riding the 15-year-old Callas, the mare’s first success at this level. He beat Ireland’s Darragh Kenny (Volnay Du Boisdeville) into second with Kent Farrington third on Landon, who he considers to have a very bright future.

“She’s been knocking on the door, so it’s nice for us to break through and get a big win,” said Mclain. “The jump-off was built for us. She cuts a little left, so at fence one to two I could take a straight line. I needed the Hermès [oxer] to show up well off that rollback. Everybody had to make a sharp turn and it was a bit awkward, but I got away with that one.”

Mclain followed up the following day in the 1.50m classic riding the 13-year-old mare Alanine De Vains, becoming the first rider since 2014 to do the big class double.

“She should have won the class earlier in the week, but I made a mistake,” said Mclain, competing in just his second class with the mare. “She’s very careful and very fast, so that plays into my hand with a jump-off like this.”

Crediting his team, Mclain added: “We’ve worked really hard to build a great string of horses and to maintain them so that they last a long time. My top horses are 17 years old, 15 and 14 – they are experienced, which gives you such an advantage, and their health is a great testament to my team. We have great owners that allow us to show these horses the right amount and not put too much pressure on them.”

Irish victory in Belgium

Irish rider Jason Foley won the CSI2* grand prix at the Flanders Horse Xpo riding the nine-year-old mare Rockwell RC. From nearly 60 starters, 10 came forward for the jump-off. Best of the Brits was Robert Whitaker and Vermento, who just picked up four faults in round one.

‘One of the hardest goodbyes’: grand prix horse moves from Olympic eventer to British five-star showjumper

Showjumper MGH Candy Girl, produced by Olympic eventer Gemma Stevens, has moved to Matt Sampson.

Gemma started riding Isobel Fox’s 10-year-old “Candy” (by Sligo Candy Boy, out of a Cruising mare) as a four-year-old and has produced her to CSI3* grand prix. The decision has now been taken for Candy to be ridden by Matt, with the bigger shows in mind.

Under FEI showjumping CSI invitation rules, based on a rider’s position in the rankings, Gemma can currently compete at international shows up to CSI3, but Matt can compete at CSI5.

Gemma told H&H it was a “really tough decision” but she is confident it is the right one.

“She is a brilliant little horse and she deserves to go to some of the bigger shows that I just can’t get into. Obviously I only have one horse at this [showjumping] level, so my ranking points aren’t high enough to be able to get into the five-star shows, and Candy’s ready now,” said Gemma.

“I always knew the feeling she gave me was very good, but I don’t think we realised perhaps this time last year quite how good she was going to be. She had a really good year and stepped up to grand prix.

“I can honestly say she is the most intelligent horse I’ve ever known, she’s freakish with her intelligence and she’s incredibly careful in every sense. She’s really feisty, but never in a nasty way; she’s just a proper sassy mare and when it comes down to it in the ring and you say, ‘Come on, let’s go girl’, she’ll fight for you.”

Matt Sampson had a phenomenal 2022; including three five-star titles among his 17 wins at Spruce Meadows, and many other top placings. He rounded off the year by winning the London International Horse Show grand prix with Ebolensky.

Gemma said when Matt tried Candy he was “buzzing”.

“That gave me a really good feeling,” she said. “He said how amazing she feels and he thinks that she can be a top horse, which is so exciting for us.

“He’s a great communicator, which is really important for us so we’ll still be able to be a part of her career. We’ve very excited to see what he can do. There’s going to be a period of time for him to get to know her, and she’s only ever been jumped by me in the ring, but we’ve told him he’s got all the time in the world. Then hopefully there will be some magic!”

Matt, who is in Spain competing but plans to return to Canada for the Spruce Meadows summer series, told H&H he is “delighted” about taking on the ride.

“I can’t wait to get going with her. I think she’s a very competitive horse with a big heart. I’ve seen Gemma riding her for a long time and I’ve always really liked her,” he said.

“I’m really grateful to be taking her on and I’d like to say a massive thanks to Gemma for doing such an amazing job with her. It shows truly what a horsewoman and rider Gemma is to be doing two disciplines at such a high level.

“The plan is to get to know Candy over the next few months and develop her up the levels and see what she’s got. We’re currently at the Sunshine Tour, so it’s a great place to get to know the newer horses and keep producing my other ones to the higher levels.”

Candy is the first showjumper Gemma has produced and she hopes to do the same with others, alongside eventing.

“I’ve always been keen on showjumping, but it’s the first time I’ve had the opportunity to compete a horse at that level,” she said. “Having her from a very sharp four-year-old, I know she’s really matured and knows her job. It’s really sparked my love for showjumping even more than before and I want to try and produce another one up the grades.

“I’ve got a really smart rising seven-year-old, Cinsey Blue, who we bought at the end of her five-year-old year. She’s nice and scopey, so we’re going to see how she turns out this year as a seven-year-old. I’ve also got the ride on Balou for Pleasure, a little stallion who was sent to me the middle of last year. It’s been exciting for me to have a couple of other owners who are keen on on the jumping.”

Gemma added that Candy has been bred from via embryo transfer; she currently has two yearlings, a two-year-old and a four-year-old, Kannan’s Lolliop. A foal by Big Star is due this year.

“Candy has been amazing at producing embryos. We’re really excited about them all. Kannan’s Lollipop will start doing some very low-key and quiet local shows towards the end of the year, there’s no plans to rush her,” said Gemma.

Gemma added that she is “definitely not” giving up eventing.

“This year it’s going to swing a little bit back towards eventing because I’ve got more this year than I did last year. I’ve got eight event horses who are super smart and exciting,” she said.

“I’d love to get to some of the bigger shows in showjumping, but I have to be realistic. I have some very nice event horses, and I’m really hoping to campaign and try to get myself on the list for Paris 2024 selection. It’s hard for us Brits because we’ve got to literally be the best in the world to get selected, but I’ve got two horses; Flash Cooley and Johan-Some, who I think are really special. I really want to focus on that for the next 18 months or so, but keep producing these nice jumping horses.”

‘To actually win here is unbelievable’: home rider celebrates epic victory in London grand prix

Lighting up the London Horse Show with the biggest smile of the week was British showjumper Matt Sampson, who clinched an epic victory in the Turkish Airlines London grand prix as the curtain came down on this year’s show on Monday night (18 December).

Riding the Evison family’s 13-year-old mare Ebolensky, Matt scored with the sole double clear of the class to lift an impressive array of silverware and the £27,300 top prize.

“It’s absolutely incredible, I can’t believe it, it’s just a dream come true,” said an emotional Matt, who is now based between Europe and Canada. “This is so special for me and the owners, the Evison family. They’ve owned “Lenny”, as we call her, from a foal and I’ve ridden her since she was seven. To win this class on her is absolutely amazing.”

Matt’s victory represented a fantastic big class double for British riders on home soil after Scott Brash’s success in the previous day’s Longines FEI World Cup qualifier.

In an intriguing class, there were plenty of shock exits in round one from some of the leading names in the sport and just four clears were produced from a field of 30. An initially tight time allowed was extended slightly but course-designer Bernardo Costa Cabral set an imposing set of questions with faults coming throughout, although a lofty vertical off a blind bend from a double right in front of the in-gate caused heartbreak for many.

Jump-off pathfinder was Matt with the talented Ebolensky (Clinton x Heartbreaker), a former Horse of the Year Show Foxhunter winner who is in the form of her life, having racked up an impressive tally of wins this year. The pair looked composed as they circled before the start, but as soon as they broke the beam, Matt was forward in the saddle and the determined pair rocketed round the shortened course with daring turns and an ambitious sprint down the final line. There were big thumbs up for the cheering crowd as Matt left the arena, having set the bar sky high with a clear in 31.88sec, but facing an anxious wait as his three rivals prepared to stake their claim.

Next in the ring was Britain-based Swedish rider Angelie von Essen with another super grey, Martin Dawes’ 17-year-old mare Cochella. The pair weren’t quite as quick through the early lines and then tipped the Liverpool vertical three from home to finish with four faults in a time of 34.87sec.

In hot pursuit came Italian rider Lorenzo De Luca, a winner the previous day at the London Horse Show. He’d survived a volley of lucky rubs in round one, dramatically wiping his brow in relief as he finished with a clear round, but his luck ran out at the double of verticals in the jump-off and the second element fell. He and the 12-year-old Curcuma Il Palazzetto slotted into second with their slightly quicker four-fault round of 34.28sec. Lorenzo was full of praise for this valuable addition to his string.

“He’s brave, doesn’t spook at anything and he always tries to give his best in the ring,” said the Italian.

London Horse Show grand prix: Matt Sampson has anxious wait

The spotlight turned to the final rider, Ireland’s Denis Lynch riding the youngest horse in the field, the eight-year-old Dark Chocolate who, like Lorenzo’s ride, is by the great stallion Casall. Unfortunately they picked up eight faults but this smart young stallion competing in his first grand prix is definitely one for the future.

Matt, who had retired in the previous day’s World Cup qualifier with the mare, celebrated his success with several laps of honour, cheered home by an appreciative crowd.

“Competing here is what we dream of growing up – to actually win here is unbelievable,” he said, explaining his plan for the jump-off with the mare. “She has a really big stride and she’s really good at turning so it suited me. We had a little bit of luck at the second last fence but it came off.

“She’s got her own character – her breeding is very much that that way inclined. So she gets quite sort of hyperactive with the atmosphere. So it’s me trying to tame her a little bit and obviously sometimes when it’s only a short distance in between the jumps, she gets a bit excited and then she starts to bounce around a bit, but I know her well enough now that she always tries to jump the fence when she gets there. So I just try to contain it as much as we can, but I think it’s what makes her so good.”

British rider Jodie Hall McAteer, competing in the five star classes at the London International Horse Show for the first time, received a magnum of champagne as the show’s leading rider, having notched up several placings throughout the week, a phenomenal achievement for this 22-year-old rising star.

A ‘special’ gelding resumes his winning ways, ‘an adrenaline kick like no other’ and Jack Whitaker scorches to a five-star double

The return of the Longines FEI World Cup jumping series in Europe signals that winter is drawing in, and Jack Whitaker secured a tremendous winning double in the five-star classes at the season opener in Norway. Conversely, it’s still shorts-and-T-shirt weather for those extending the outdoor season on the various jumping tours in Portugal and Spain, where Cian O’Connor and Kilkenny secured a notable grand prix victory.

Here is H&H’s weekly round-up of international action over the past week, plus showjumping results.

Kilkenny shows star quality – and there’s an exciting new ride for O’Connor

The Andalucia October Tour in Spain kicked off with an eye-catching grand prix victory for Irish showjumper Cian O’Connor riding Susan Magnier’s 10-year-old Kilkenny. The pair skipped round the 1.50m track, taking out a stride to the double and executing a superb turnback to the penultimate fence in the jump-off before soaring home clear, more than half a second quicker than nearest rivals Laura Kraut with Baloutinue for USA in an exciting 10-way jump-off.

“Kilkenny is a special horse,” said Cian. “He was clear in the 1.45m here the other day and he was fantastic in the grand prix. He’s not a horse I go terribly competitively on a lot, I keep him for the bigger days.”

Cian said he was “delighted” for Susan Magnier, owner of the Irish-bred son of Cardento 933.

“We put a lot of effort in to have him fit for Dublin, which was very special jumping double clear to help the team secure the win [in the Nations Cup],” Cian told H&H. “Over the past couple of weeks I’ve been busy travelling, selling horses, looking for horses, all sides of the business, so we decided to start him up here again for the winter campaign and he felt great. The difference between good horses and the really special ones is you don’t need to practise, and you don’t need to teach Kilkenny anything – he hasn’t gone against the clock for over a year yet he can just go in and take out a stride and do a turnback like that. It’s funny when you realise just how different he is to most other animals, he has a very special brain.”

“These classes are always competitive, there are no easy wins nowadays, but it’s a beautiful grass arena, the organisers do a very good job here and the fences were very impressive and big enough,” added Cian, pictured below. “It was a good start.”

Cian also debuted another new ride for Susan Magnier, the nine-year-old stallion Rock Of Cashel – previously known as Icoon VDL when ridden by Hessel Hoekstra until recently. Cian hopes this classy prospect could be his European Championship ride in 2023.

“He’s a lovely horse, it’s early days and we’ve only done small classes here, but we’re aiming to step him up to the grand prix next week,” said Cian, who was impressed by the son of VDL Bubalu’s recent performances with his previous rider; they finished third in the grand prix of Falsterbo and jumped clear in Rotterdam.

“He’s only nine years old and has all these good results behind him so I thought he was worth looking at. His previous rider Hessel has done a great job and his former owner is in touch, which is nice because if you don’t have all the keys with a new horse, you have to start from scratch, whereas if they help you with the horse, you get the manual with them.”

Nippy mare helps Whitaker to a five-star double

Jack Whitaker and the super mare Scenletha found the winning formula not once, but twice, at the Kingsland Oslo Horse Show in Norway, scorching to victory in Friday’s CSI5* 1.50m speed class and following up in Sunday’s jump-off contest.

“She’s in unbelievable form and it felt like the more we jumped the better she got, she feels tip-top,” said Jack, who beat strong performances from second-placed Daniel Deusser with Kiana Van Het Herdershof and third-placed Lily Attwood (Karibou Horta) in the 45-starter class.

In Sunday’s World Cup qualifier, Jack and Equine America Valmy De La Lande finished with four faults.

“We had the second-last fence down, which was just a normal vertical off a corner, so a really soft fence to have down, especially when Valmy is normally an unbelievable vertical jumper,” said Jack. “I was really happy with the way he jumped, so it was disappointing to have that one down – if he jumped it another 100 times I’m sure he wouldn’t have knocked it. But both he and Scenletha are pretty good indoors, so hopefully we’ll have another chance when we go to Helsinki this week.”

‘An adrenaline kick like I never experienced in my whole life!’

Following up on his 2019 success, 25-year-old Swiss rider Bryan Balsiger landed the opening leg of the Longines FEI World Cup Western European League in Oslo, Norway, this time riding the exciting mare Dubai Du Bois Pinchet (pictured below).

His victory came after a highly competitive 11-way jump-off, holding off the challenge of second-placed Victoria Gulliksen on Equine America Papa Roach, with jump-off pathfinder Ireland’s Eoin McMahon third riding Ludger Beerbaum’s Chakra.

“Since the beginning of the year, Dubai has been the number one horse in my stable and we’ve been having good results together,” said Bryan. “I knew we could do more and I was waiting for a big win, so I’m over the moon with her! She has a lot of temperament but I know her well and she gives me everything – and more.

“When we plan go to a World Cup qualifier, I always have my horses ready because it is a big opportunity to ride for your country at this level and I just want to do my best,” he said. “I needed luck today, but after three years you know how difficult it is to win at World Cup shows. It doesn’t happen every weekend and it’s a brilliant achievement that can only happen with the help of my great horse and all of my team, my sponsor and trainer and my groom – I am so grateful to them all for believing in me and my horses.”

This year’s demanding track in the compact Telenor Arena was set by Swedish course-designer Peter Lundstrom and asked plenty of questions as horses came indoors after a summer competing outside.

Runner-up Victoria Gulliksen, 30, said: “It was a crazy feeling, an adrenaline kick like I never experienced in my whole life! Without that horse I would never have jumped clear. I was missing totally to the last fence but he jumped it.”

The Norwegian rider added: “He does everything for me because he loves me and I love him, and he just knew he had to jump clear today and he was really working for it. I couldn’t be more happy to have a clear round for the first time in the World Cup on home soil!”

The World Cup rolls into Helsinki, Finland, next Sunday.

A winning double for Matt Sampson

The British showjumper Matt Sampson has returned to Europe and this week contested the CSI3* Andalucia October Tour, where he immediately resumed his winning ways, landing a brace of classes on consecutive days, with Fabrice TN (pictured above) and Curraghgraigue Obos Flight among a string of good placings. His win with the latter came in a competitive 1.45m two-phase where he beat Holly Smith with Poden Farms’ Don Vito into second position, with an in-form Niamh McEvoy third on Templepatrick Welcome Limmerick. Among the other British winners in Spain were Kayleigh Watts (Whisper Of Joy), Ellie Hall McAteer (Billy Penny), her sister Jodie (Kimosa Van Het Kritrahof) and Will Edwards (Magic Chanti).

At the CSI4* Fall Tour at Hubside Jumping Grimaud, St Tropez. France, recent Horse Of The Year Show (HOYS) puissance winner Commandant Geoff Curran landed a 1.50m two-phase riding the 10-year-old Tempo Manor, and his fellow Irishman Darragh Kenny secured a 1.45m victory against the clock on Cicomein VDL. This week’s grand prix winner was world number three Julien Epaillard of France with the nine-year-old Donatello D’Auge.

British showjumper Chloe Aston landed the CSI3* grand prix at the Villamoura Champions Tour in Portugal. She and the 11-year-old mare Flavie Van De Helle soared home quickest in a nine-way jump-off to land the €12,825 top prize. James Smith took a notable win with the Castrado seven-year-old Wicked’s Vancouver, also jumping to victory on Laura Renwick’s Arkuga in Thursday’s 1.40m two-phase while Philip Spivey landed Friday’s 1.40m speed class on the nine-year-old Billy Pearl. Laura Renwick described James’s success as a “fabulous start to our Vilamoura Champions Tour”.

Venue honours British rider for incredible streak of 17 wins

British showjumper Matt Sampson has made a huge impression since his move to North America, not least at Spruce Meadows in Canada, where he racked up an astonishing 17 wins this summer.

On Saturday (10 September) at the CSIO5* Masters Tournament, shortly after his latest victory in the Suncor Winning Round riding the great mare Ebolensky, show organisers presented Matt with some impressive silverware and a cooler rug as he was awarded the title of Spruce Meadows’ Xerox rider of the year.

“It’s an amazing venue to be at, so to win in the five-star here is every rider’s life ambition,” said Matt, who racked up $430,000 in prize-money from his 17 wins.

The 32-year-old’s first visit to the winner’s circle during the summer series came in early June with the 10-year-old Irish sport horse Curraghgraigue Obos Flight. Since then, he has ridden Evora BJX, Fabrice DN, new mare Elisa BJX and the 13-year-old Ebolensky to success in the show’s international classes, including a landmark first five-star grand prix victory.

Adding a winning hat-trick at the CSI3* at Vancouver in June stretches Matt Sampson’s list of international accomplishments in the past three months alone to 20.

“I’ve just had such an amazing year,” Matt told H&H.

Spruce Meadows president and CEO Linda Southern-Heathcott acknowledged his achievements in front of a packed house on the penultimate day of the season. “I don’t know that we’ve ever had an athlete who’s won 17 events at Spruce Meadows in one year,” she said.

Matt Sampson: ‘A life-long ambition’

Organisers and spectators alike have been charmed by this fierce competitor with his “contagious smile”, and he received rapturous applause for his winning performance in Saturday’s class on the 13-year-old mare Ebolensky, who he co-owns with the Evison family.

Drawn late in the 10-way decider, the pair soared into the lead in 58.14sec. But no class is over until Kent Farrington has jumped and with the advantage of last draw, the US rider and the buzzy chestnut Creedance pulled off a heart-stopping inside turn that Matt had spotted but had elected wouldn’t suit his mare.

The short-cut handed Kent a 3sec advantage but, as the crowd roared him home, the final oxer fell and victory went to Matt Sampson, who had finished second to Kent earlier in the week.

“I got my own back!” he said. “Ebolensky is an amazing horse, so careful. That ring is massive and the way they built the jump-off course, there were about 16 strides between fences! I’m lucky she has such a big stride and I can trust her to go at that speed to clear the fences. She really covers the ground. A lot of the time in a jump-off like that you have to slow down when you get to the fence because you’ve picked up so much speed, but with her I can put her in a rhythm and she stays in it.

“It’s not often Creedance or Kent has a fence down so we got lucky – but I’ll take it!”

Matt first jumped at Spruce Meadows in Calgary last year and returned for this year’s summer series.

“I’ve been lucky enough to win two five-star grands prix [one of which resulted in a rare dead-heat] with two different horses,” said Matt. “The horses just grow here and the facilities are the best in the world, so I’m just very grateful to be able to ride here.”

Matt contested Sunday’s CP International presented by Rolex, won by Daniel Deusser with Killer Queen VDM, with Fabrice DN, but unfortunately came unstuck at the difficult treble combination which came just a few strides after the open water in round one. It was the Luis Alejandro Plascencia-owned 12-year-old Fabrice DN who took Matt to his first five-star grand prix victory in the RBC grand prix of Canada in June.

“That was a life-long ambition, it’s what every rider strives to achieve,” said Matt.

A ‘big pony with a big heart’, a historic dead heat and a rider without a stirrup – who won showjumping ribbons this week?

The summer season is reaching a crescendo across the Atlantic, with a string of top level shows in Canada and USA at the moment with showjumping results coming thick and fast, but there’s plenty of action in Europe too. This week we saw a rare tie for top honours in a five-star grand prix, a rider having to improvise with a fast plan B after losing a stirrup in a jump-off, an oversized pony finding the winning formula and the return of Ben Maher’s World Championship star Faltic HB in a nail-biting jump-off.

Here is your weekly round-up of international sporting action from the world of showjumping over the past few days, as well as this week’s showjumping results.

Who needs two stirrups anyway?

In the final CSI5* class at the Longines Global Champions Tour (LGCT) of Rome at the Circus Maximus, Christian Ahlmann and the stallion Solid Gold Z (pictured below) triumphed – despite the rider losing a stirrup en route and having to improvise during his jump-off round. Christian executed a miraculous rollback after his foot slipped out of the stirrup at the third fence from home.

“I had to do one or two extra strides than I planned,” said the German rider, who still bolted home 0.91sec faster than runner-up Malin Baryard-Johnsson of Sweden riding the brilliantly named Harley Davidson in a six-way jump-off. “He is an unbelievable horse, an unbelievable fighter and I’m so pleased everyone can see how special he is.”

A historic dead heat and incredible winning streak for Matt Sampson

Very rarely will a top-level grand prix result in a dead heat, but at the Continental CSI5*/2* tournament at Spruce Meadows, Canada, Ireland’s Paul O’Shea and British rider Matt Sampson shared the spoils after both riders stopped the clock on exactly 38sec in Sunday’s Friends of the Meadows grand prix presented by Rolex (pictured below). A field of 20 combinations representing eight nations tackled Anthony D’Ambrosio’s track with seven making it through to the jump-off. Riding Imerald Van’t Voorhof, Paul set the lightning-quick target for Matt to chase and he and the great mare Ebolensky flew off in hot pursuit, posting the exact same time. This was the first time in Spruce Meadows history that there were two winners of a five-star grand prix.

“We love Spruce Meadows, to be able to jump in the big grass fields before next week [CSIO5* Masters tournament] and have this result builds confidence,” said Matt. Paul added: “This is a big grand prix in itself, I’m very happy to be here and to have this opportunity ahead of next week.”

This win was the icing on the cake for a jubilant Matt, who is enjoying an incredible winning streak, having also claimed victory this week in the 1.45m CSI2* grand prix with Rachel Evison’s Curraghgraigue Obos Flight, a 1.40m on Evora BJX and Thursday’s 1.50m class riding Fabrice DN, with several other placings too. The secret to one “quirky” multi-winning horse? A ‘support human’

US showjumper Kristen Vanderveen landed the speed stakes at the Hampton Classic Horse Show on a big-striding horse with “a quirky personality”, Bull Run’s Prince of Peace.

“It’s great to be back at the Hampton Classic,” she said. “My plan was actually to go all-out on my second horse, Faustino, but today it paid off to stay a little conservative. Prince of Peace is also a really fast horse, so I didn’t have to go all-out with him.”

“He’s quite the character,” she said of the 13-year-old Holsteiner gelding. “He’s taken me a bit of time to figure out. He’s got a quirky personality, so he’s a little special in the barn. He always likes to have his groom with him; we call it ‘needing his support human.’ But he’s won many classes over the years and been great. He’s done speed classes and grands prix, and it’s nice to have a horse that I can use in both divisions.”

Faltic HB is back!

One of the heroes of Great Britain’s bronze medal-winning squad from last month’s World Showjumping Championships, Ben Maher’s ride Faltic HB, was back in action this week, competing at the LGCT of Rome. Ben and the Oakingham Stud’s stallion blitzed round clear in 43.35sec to finish a very close second to victor Christian Kukuk riding the impressive stallion Mumbai in Saturday’s grand prix. The victorious German rider picked up one of the last remaining golden tickets to this year’s prestigious LGCT Super Grand Prix at the Prague Playoffs in November.

Taking third after a thrilling 12-way jump-off was Marlon Zanotelli riding Like A Diamond Van Het Schaeck, just ahead of world champion Henrik von Eckermann with his potential superstar mare Iliana. The recent LGCT London winner, Pieter Devos and Mom’s Toupie De La Roque finished fifth while another Brit, Jodie Hall McAteer rode another brilliant double clear with Salt’N Peppa (H&H‘s Spotlight star in this week’s magazine, in the shops 8 September) to finish seventh.

“This means everything to me,” said Christian, who is based at the stables of Ludger Beerbaum. “I have put enormous effort into this sport and all the horses, especially Mumbai, over the past 10 years since I started at Ludger’s and I always dream about winning one of these LGCT grands prix.

“I just realised that the breeder of Mumbai is here and it is her birthday – I think the day was just made for us. My groom has always said ‘I want to win one of these grands prix and I want to be in Prague for the Super Grand Prix’ and I said ‘I will try my best’. Today it worked out – it means a lot to us.”

“Big pony with a big heart” jumps to victory

At the 2022 Hampton Classic Horse Show at Bridgehampton, NY, Amanda Derbyshire triumphed in Friday’s CSI2* grand prix qualifier riding Gochman Sport Horse LLC’s Wonder If (main image above).

“I’ve had ‘Juicy’ since the start of Florida this year,” said Amanda of the 10-year-old British-bred Cevin Z mare, formerly produced by Emma McGlynn. “She’s the most awesome horse. She’s literally a big pony with a really big heart. She’s been nothing but perfect since we got her and is the nicest, friendliest horse. Every time you go into the ring, you know she’s going to try for you, and it’s such a good feeling to have. Even though she’s little and doesn’t have the biggest stride, she makes up for it by being really fast and economical over the jumps. The owner, Becky, was also here to watch today, and it’s just amazing. She’s my biggest supporter, and I will always be grateful to her.”

Sunday’s $410,000 Hampton Classic five-star grand prix was won by Karl Cook with Kalinka Van’t Zorgvliet.

“What a horse”

At the CSI3* Bemer Riders Tour at Lier, Belgium, Great Britain’s Robert Whitaker was in the money, claiming a victory in Friday’s 1.50m grand prix qualifier riding Caroline Blatchford’s 13-year-old Evert after a quality field of 13 jumped off against the clock.

“What a horse,” said Robert, who went on to finish 10th to Frenchman Mathieu Billot (Darling De L’Angevine) in the 1.55m feature class and also finished in the money at the show with Vermento.

London Knights win GCL of Rome

The duo of Mike Kawai and Sam Hutton helped GCL team London Knights to their first podium of the season at the Rome leg on Saturday (3 September).

“This feeling is actually amazing because I have always wanted to be on top of the podium in the GCL and to win the class feels incredible – we finally did it!” said Mike, who is trained by Jan Tops and rode Goldwin, a former mount of Laura Kraut, in Rome.

Sam, who was riding the London stallion Oak Grove’s Laith at only their second show together, added: “We really stuck together as a team. Abdel Said was there helping us and it was a great feeling. We are going to be fighting for a top-four finish that is for sure. When I walked it I thought it was quite a difficult course, and everyone was jumping it really well early on but I think it was the pressure of the teams that got to everyone.”

Berlin Eagles have now taken the lead in the GCL Championship with just two stages to go.

Auction purchase is proving profitable

Israeli showjumper Daniel Bluman took top honours in the $74,000 Hampton Classic CSI2* grand prix riding Cachemire De Braize.

“Cache has been with us for about three years,” said Daniel of the 10-year-old Selle Français gelding. “He came out of an auction a few years ago, and I’ve been working with him since. He’s got a lot of talent, and he’s definitely fast. He’s had almost 10 international wins. He’s a very good horse, very competitive, and has his own way of going.

“[Course designer] Alan Wade of course did a good job, but we don’t expect anything less from him. It was a difficult track for the two-star level, but Cachemire is a five-star horse. He’s done a lot of four-star grands prix, so he’s really at a level where he has experience and scope to spare. He gave me a really, really nice first round, then was great for the second. I knew I had to lay it out in the second round because I had some fast riders coming, and Karl Cook had already had a good jump-off. I just focused on my plan, and it worked out.”

Botham’s quick-fire treble in Rome

Fresh from success at the London leg of the LGCT, Adam Botham rode Barbara Hester’s Harvey to victory in Friday’s CSI2* two-phase at the LGCT in Rome. Warwickshire-based Adam quickly made it a winning double, jumping Barbara’s great stallion Ebanking (pictured above) to victory in the 1.40m equivalent, then the duo returned the next morning to take the red ribbons for the speed class by an incredible margin of nearly 2sec.

Another British rider who finished in the ribbons in London, Izac Ketteridge, chased home Adam and Harvey in the opening two-phase to finish second riding Z7 Caretina and then followed up with a victory double in both Saturday’s 1.30m speed class and Sunday’s jump-off class riding Carron Nicol’s impressive 11-year-old Galerius.

Ireland’s Shane Breen was another victor in Italy’s capital this week, winning the opening CSI5* two-phase with Z7 Ipswich.

There was a five-star showjumping bonanza close to home this week, with both Dublin Horse Show and the Longines Global Champions Tour of London vying for our attention. We witnessed a barefoot grand prix winner, heart-warming scenes of Irish ecstasy and heard about one mare’s miraculous comeback from serious injury.

Here is your weekly round-up of just some of the international sporting action from the world of showjumping, as well as this weekend’s showjumping results.

‘This has been a lifetime goal’

Nothing means more to Irish showjumpers than to lift the Aga Khan Cup for the Longines FEI Nations Cup of Ireland at Dublin Horse Show and on Friday (19 August) the quartet of 18-year-old Max Wachman (Berlux Z), Conor Swail (Count Me In), Cian O’Connor (Kilkenny) and Shane Sweetnam (James Kaan Cruz) bridged a seven-year gap to lift the coveted trophy amidst great scenes of jubilation. This was the nation’s 24th victory since its inception in 1926 and came after an epic duel with France to decide top honours.

“It’s been a lifetime goal and an incredible achievement to be Irish and win the FEI Nations Cup of Ireland,” said Conor, Ireland’s chosen jump-off representative, who couldn’t quite believe he’d nailed victory. “I looked up and the screen said two – I thought I wasn’t fast enough, it usually says one when you’re the quickest.” The cheering crowds soon put him right.

Anchorman Cian O’Connor, on his 16th Dublin team appearance and landing his fourth Dublin win, said after his double clear: “Kilkenny felt like he owned the ring, it was on me not to make a mistake.”

A miraculous comeback from injury for former world-beater

Nicole Lockhead Anderson and Tom Williams’ superstar mare Chilli put in a breathtaking performance to win the CSI2* Fiji Water grand prix at the London LGCT.

“She’s just an absolute legend,” said Nicole of the 10-year-old Colestus x Colorit German-bred mare, who was a big winner in young horse classes, taking the World Young Horse Breeding Championships in Lanaken as a five-year-old when ridden by Pippa Goddard and finishing runner-up there as a six-year-old with Donald Whitaker in the saddle, before going on to win the newcomers final with him in 2018.

But disaster struck two years ago in Spain when Chilli got loose in the arena and tried to jump out, resulting in injuries that have required two years of healing and recuperation, making this an emotional return for the team.

“She basically lost all the muscles in her armpit and needed two years off,” said Nicole. “It’s amazing that she’s healed and has come back to jump at this level. We brought her back very slowly. She started jumping again a couple of months ago and Tom said a long time ago that he wanted to win the grand prix in London with her and we did it! She absolutely loved it – to win here is amazing.”

Clearing 2.20m at ‘the best show in the world’

Ireland’s Mikey Pender claimed a stunning hat-trick and the leading rider award at Dublin Horse Show. Marion Hughes’ consistent home-bred Catoki x Douglas 11-year-old HHS Fortune doubled up, taking the opening day’s speed stakes with 1.38 sec to spare and the speed Derby by a clear two seconds. Mikey’s 2019 Hickstead Derby champion Hearton Du Bois Halleux stepped up in the puissance, the Nonstop 15-year-old the only one to clear 2.20m in the five-way decider.

“This is the best show in the world. My horses have been on fantastic form and the crowd was behind us all week,” said Mikey.

Barefoot one-two in London thriller

THE Brits may have been pushed off the podium for the first time since the Longines Global Champions Tour of London grand prix’s inception, but MOM’s Toupie De La Roque, the characterful chestnut mare (pictured below) who took the €100,000 (£84,830) jackpot for Belgium’s Pieter Devos, still won the admiration of the crowd. Pieter’s distinctive, white-stockinged 15-year-old, who competes barefoot and without front boots, used every ounce of athleticism and care to clear the second fence, after losing momentum on a risky, tight turnback. Her enthusiasm shone out round the rest of the track, where the split-screen analysis showed she found even more of an advantage on a brave run to the vertical at the last.

“The horse was doing absolutely everything she could to jump the fences clear,” Pieter said.

Second-placed rider Olivier Philippaerts was also riding a barefoot horse, the 10-year-old H&M Miro. Best of the Brits was fourth-placed Ellen Whitaker riding Andrew and Tilly Shaw’s 10-year-old grey Equine America Spacecake, who has “bunny-hopped” up the levels this year.

“She’s really quite inexperienced and I am so happy with her,” said Ellen, who started out jumping the mare at 1.10m and 1.20m in summer 2021 and began her five-star career in Rome this year.

Showjumping results: new mare impresses for Matt Sampson

British rider Matt Sampson has been enjoying plenty of success across the pond so far this summer, including top wins at Spruce Meadows, and he continued that streak this weekend. Matt and Elisa BJX took the 1.50m CSI3* ATCO Cup Grand Prix at Thunderbird Show Park, near Vancouver, nearly three seconds ahead of the USA’s Karrie Rufer on Stern dei Foletti.

“I thought, ‘It’s not very often you get to be in a grand prix at a show like this in the jump-off’,” Matt said. “She’s 10 years old, so she’s old enough to give it a go, and she just rose to it. That’s what good horses do.”

The mare had only jumped her first 1.50m course two days beforehand, in the “tbird” CSI3* Uryadi’s Village Cup.

“She [jumped] 1.50m on Friday, and we had two mistakes, but she just learns. She’s clever,” Matt said. “In the first round, she felt really good but a little inexperienced in places. In the jump-off, she felt amazing.”

Elisa only joined Matt’s string in June at Spruce Meadows.

“It’s difficult to get to know the horses at the show when you’re trying to compete with them, because you don’t really get that time for them to get to know you and vice versa—to create that bond where she trusts me,” he said. “I think we’ve really got that now.”

Swiss rider ‘steals’ his first five-star success from the Irish

Sunday’s Longines grand prix at Dublin Horse Show was won by Edouard Schmitz on Gamin Van’t Naastveldhof for Switzerland. Only seven of the 40 starters mastered course-designer Alan Wade’s 14-fence 1.60m track with Edouard registering his first win at this level by 0.47 sec.

“I got a good turn from fence one to two and I was cheeky on the rollback turn to the [penultimate] oxer,” said Edouard, who also executed a risky gallop to the double on the Chacco Chacco x Toulon 10-year-old. “He’s a big-striding horse with a good canter.”

Asked if he knew what it meant to win Ireland’s biggest grand prix, he replied: “I do. I’ve stolen it from two Irish riders but it couldn’t be a better place to win my first five-star grand prix.”

Conor and Count Me In came so close. “One less stride to the last would have got it but he’s jumped five clears over three days, I couldn’t ask for more,” he said, after edging ahead of third-placed teammate Shane Sweetnam on James Kann Cruz.

A speedy win on a ‘slow’ horse

Adam Botham took Saturday’s Martin Collins London Cup at the LGCT with a super round on Barbara Hester’s 10-year-old gelding Harvey. The 1.30m speed class was claimed with an innovative ride from Adam on Harvey, who he says is not naturally the quickest horse. So what was the secret to their success?

“I did one less stride everywhere basically!” said Adam, who won in 58.50sec, nearly a second faster than his closest rivals.

“Harvey’s not a fast horse, so he has to really try. When you walk the course, you have to work out how to do something different to everybody else with him in order to be fast enough, because when he jumps he doesn’t scoot through the air. He jumps high, and he’s a bit slow, but that’s why he can jump a big class. But in these speed classes, you just have to make sure you do something different.”

Wins galore for Breen and Howley

Great Britain-based Irishman Richard Howley claimed a hat-trick of wins at Dublin Horse Show while Trevor Breen soared to the top of the 1.50m Dublin Stakes riding Germaine W, jointly owned with Mandy Hall and Paul McAteer. Richard’s first win came in the Minerva 1.45m speed class on the Harley 12-year-old Fame with 2.26 sec in hand over William Whitaker’s Jalellah OL. They followed it up with a win in the pairs relay with Cliodhna McEvoy, 10, on 128cm Tynnan Tuttle Pip. Richard also took a 0.27 sec win in the Kilkea Castle 1.45m speed on Sarah Borthwick’s Chinook, a Tygo x Wellington 15-year-old at his second show since returning from injury 14 months ago. They arrived on form after a double victory at Bolesworth two-star the previous week.

“He’s been amazing these past six years. He’s won at every level, even when asking him beyond his capabilities, he never backs down from a challenge. He’s a fighter,” said Richard.

Pohl’s winning double

German rider Nicola Pohl, whose boyfriend Donald Whitaker was jumping in the five-star classes at the London LGCT, landed a winning double at the show with Jack Whitaker’s junior European Championships silver medallist, Arlo De Blondel. The pair rocketed to top spot in Friday’s Hastens 1.40m two-phase, following up in the 1.30m Martin Collins London Cup jump-off class on Sunday.

“Arlo gave me everything – he loves the speed,” said 26-year-old Nicola, who took the reins at the start of the year.

‘It’s suddenly hit me now. I owe her so much’

The opening Hyde Park Stables 1.15m two-phase at the London leg of the Longines Global Champions Tour resulted in an emotional win for Ireland’s Aisling Byrne, who was told four years ago that she would never walk again after a riding accident in which a horse fell on top of her.

“I didn’t think I’d ever see that vision looking through the ears again, so even to have that, then to get in the ring, then for her to win… it’s incredible, a dream come true,” said Aisling, who was riding her super grey mare Wellview Lucy. “She was the first horse I got back on and jumped my first 60cm again after my accident, so she’s brought me all the way. It’s suddenly hit me now. I owe her so much.”

Young British riders flew the flag this week, with Harry Charles and Matt Sampson taking top-level wins. Here is your weekly round-up of just some of the international sporting action from the world of showjumping.

God Save The Queen played in the Zoute Plage arena at Knokke Hippique, Belgium, this weekend, as Britain’s young superstar and his fantastic ride Stardust, owned by Pembroke Holdings and Stall Zet, won the CSI5* 1.55m class.

Harry and the 12-year-old Chacco-Blue mare, one of four rides with which Harry has been named on the World Championships nominated entries list, were the fastest of eight in the jump-off to take the win.

Sampson continues to impress

Hot on the heels of his first five-star win, in Spruce Meadows, Canada, on Fabrice DN, young British rider Matt Sampson scored another CCI5* victory, this time on Ebolensky.

Matt and the KWPN mare, whom he owns with Rachael Evison, took the 1.50m AKITA Drilling winning round on 9 July. This was Matt’s 10th win of the 2022 Spruce Meadows summer series.

Irish victory across the pond

Paul O’Shea won the ATCO Queen Elizabeth II Cup at Spruce Meadows on Imerald van’t Voorhof on 9 July. The combination jumped one of seven first-round clears, then clocked up just a single time-fault in the second round to clinch the win.

“He’s a great water jumper and very brave. I had a feeling if I brought him here he would excel,” said Paul.

Speedy Guy takes a win

Guy Williams and his superstar stallion Rouge De Ravel added yet another win to their impressive CV in Tops International Arena, Valkenswaard.

Guy and his lightning-fast 17-year-old stallion claimed the biggest win on the first day of action as the Tops International Arena season was officially declared open. The combination came home over two seconds faster than Emanuele Gaudiano on Nikolaj de Music, with Ireland’s Daniel Coyle in third on Ivory TCS.

The Olympic champion only needs one stirrup

The 11-time Longines Global Champions Tour grand prix winner Ben Maher returned to top flight competition with his Olympic gold medal-winning partner Explosion W and, proving why he is the best in the world, Ben rode much of his opening round for GCL team Paris Panthers with only one stirrup. The pair went on to finish fourth in Saturday’s LGCT grand prix with the extraordinary gelding producing a flawless double clear, just off the pace of the podium winners.

First five-star grand prix glory for Matt Sampson

In Spruce Meadows, Canada, British rider Matt Sampson landed a milestone and emotional first victory in a CSI5* grand prix riding Fabrice DN. The world number five, Conor Swail, finished second for Ireland.

“It’s my first five-star and for it to be at Spruce Meadows is a dream come true,” said Matt (pictured below). “I grew up watching the greats – Michael Whitaker John Whitaker and Nick Skelton – compete here. It’s what I worked for.”

Nations Cup success for Team GB

Great Britain’s Team NAF landed the CSI3* Nations Cup at Gorla Minore, Italy. The squad produced a near flawless performance to win with a zero score, thanks to double clears from Oliver Fletcher (Hello William), Amy Inglis (Wishes) and Joseph Fernyhough (Calcourt Particle) with a great performance from Joe Whitaker (Hulahupe JR). At the Nations Cup over at the CSIO3* in Prague, Czech Republic, Great Britain took fifth.

Christian Ahlmann proves dominant once again with his “superstar”

Christian Ahlmann of Germany rode the tremendous stallion Dominator 2000 Z to win their second LGCT grand prix of the season in Stockholm, Sweden. Second-placed Henrik von Eckermann (King Edward) picked up the prestigious golden ticket for the Super Grand Prix at the end-of-season Prague Playoffs.

“It was unbelievable, you can tell that all the people here are horse people and know the sport, they are behind every rider and it feels great – I am more than happy,” said Christian, who extends his lead at the top of the season rankings to 34 points clear of two-time champion Ben Maher.

The German rider also apologised to the crowd for denying a home win for their local hero Henrik.

“Dominator is an absolute superstar,” he added. “I am very pleased with my horses and my whole team who work really really hard and I really hope that everything stays sound and focused and we can make it at the end of the season.”

You snooze, you lose, in champagne fights

After finishing second with I-Cap CL Z in the CSI3* grand prix on the Split Rock Jumping Tour, USA, British rider Jessica Mendoza learned the importance of opening your celebratory champagne bottle quickly, receiving an absolute drenching when hers failed to open in time. The outright winner was US rider Molly Ashe Cawley with the 10-year-old Cappuccino (by Comme Il Faut 5), with the sole clear round in round one.

“He brought his A-game today,” said Molly. “I thought it was a tough course – there were a lot of tall verticals and the triple [combination] at the end [rode a bit like a gymnastic]. He dug in today for me.”

Turkish delight in Stockholm

Derin Demirsoy became the first Turkish rider in 16 years to win on the Longines Global Champions Tour, heading Sunday’s CSI5* 1.50m speed class riding Elzas. Local rider Henrik von Eckermann finished just 0.04sec behind on Glamour Girl, with Scott Brash and Hello Shelby just a further 0.08sec away for third place.

Bertram Allen reveals his rising star

Ireland’s Bertram Allen racked up a winning double at the LGCT of Stockholm, winning Sunday’s 1.55m class with Pacino Amiro and topping Saturday’s Future Challenge youngster jumping with the seven-year-old Karlsson (Carrera VDL x Concorde).

“It was definitely a thrilling jump-off,” said Bertram of his 1.55m victory. “It was fast and with Daniel [Deusser] and Peder [Fredricson] both having good rounds I knew I had to take a lot of risks. My horse jumped fantastic today so it was nice to come out on top.”

Irish rider Jordan Coyle and Picador landed the ATCO CSI2* grand prix in the international ring at Spruce Meadows, Canada, after an 11-way jump-off. Jordan was the pathfinder and laid down an incredibly quick clear in 43.98sec to claim victory.

Stockholm Hearts take the lead in GCL

Swedish heroes Peder Fredricson and Malin Baryard-Johnsson remained faultless for Global Champions League team Stockholm Hearts to claim victory on home soil.

“It is so nice to do the home win in front of this crowd, when you are on a horse like my fantastic Indiana she makes my life so much easier,” said Malin. “But of course, the pressure makes it harder but she is in super form and we are doing amazing at the moment.”

Ben Maher is back in the winner’s enclosure

The horse everyone’s talking about, the eight-year-old Point Break, landed the CSI2* Roelofsen Horse Trucks grand prix at Geesteren, the Netherlands, with a commanding performance under Ben Maher. The world number four piloted the stallion owned by Charlotte Rossetter and Pamela Wright to victory as the quickest of four double clears in Sunday’s eight-way jump-off. Ben’s countryman William Funnell took fourth with another up-and-coming talent, the nine-year-old Equine America Billy Marmite. Ben also brought out his Olympic gold medal-winning partner Explosion W for some very eye-catching clear rounds at the show.

Switzerland and Germany now top the leaderboard in this year’s Longines FEI Nations Cup series after the second leg in Poland over the weekend. Brilliant double clears from Janne Friederike Mayer-Zimmermann riding the 10-year-old gelding Messi Van’t Ruytershof, and European champion Andre Thieme (DSP Chakaria) helped the German team deliver their second victory in a row in Sopot. “My mare just jumped so outstanding — she made it happen,” said Andre, who had the pressure of jumping last with the result hingeing on his performance.

Janne only gave birth to her son, Friedrich Alexander, four months ago, describing her emotions as “super happy, thankful and proud” to be back in the saddle. Ireland took fourth, with Denis Lynch producing another exceptional clear with his Rome grand prix winner Brooklyn Heights. Great Britain weren’t in action this week, but will be back hoping to score more points in their second leg in Rotterdam next week (Friday 24 June).

Whitaker’s impressive six-year-old

At Gorla Minore in Italy, Joe Whitaker took top honours in the six-year-old grand prix with Dutch-bred mare Lyleine. Another Brit in flying form this week was Amy Inglis, who rode her great partner Wishes to finish runner-up to Switzerland’s Bryan Balsiger (Chelsea Z) in the CSI3* grand prix.

Saywell reigns at Keysoe

Talking of high-quality young horses progressing through the ranks, Ian Dowie’s superstar nine-year-old Kingsborough Kasper landed the CSI2* grand prix at Keysoe on Sunday, with regular rider Louise Saywell in the saddle. The pair jumped the sole double clear in the show’s feature class to collect the £8,250 top prize.

British rider on a mission beat 88 others to win at the Winter Equestrian Festival

From the outset, Britain’s Matt Sampson and Curraghgraigue Obos Flight looked like they were on a mission as they took the first fence of the jump-off at the Winter Equestrian Festival with conviction. In the largest class of the day, 89 competitors vied for the $37,000 grand prix qualifier CSI2*. Matt landed victory by thirteen-hundredths of a second, much to the delight and whistles of onlookers in the ring-side International Club.

“He is the type of horse that wants to win as much as I do,” said Matt. “He has had great rounds the rest of the season in some of the bigger five-star events, but today’s two-star was equally as difficult. Where I think the course suited us best was his smaller stride allowed us to be quick down several of the lines that other riders may have had to steady for.”

Course designer Germany’s Olaf Petersen Jr. put together a test with a tight time allowed that whittled down the entries, with 12 riders incurring time faults, and another 13 out of the running with a single rail.

“Today’s course was very difficult – you could tell that when you walked it,” said Matt. “But with the amount of entries that there were, the course designer had a lot of decisions to make. To me, it definitely rode more like a two-star grand prix than a qualifier.”

Matt and the 10-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding Curraghgraigue Obos Flight (Obos Quality 004 x Errigal Flight) have been a partnership for three years and competed successfully up to the five-star level. They have been shadowing victory at the Winter Equestrian Festival all season.

“With maybe just an unlucky rail keeping us from the top, he has had great rounds the rest of the season in some of the bigger five-star events,” said Matt. “But today’s two-star was equally as difficult.”

USA’s Caelinn Leahy and Coldplay 31 clocked in at 38.75 seconds just shy of Matt’s winning round of 38.62.

Popular British rider makes it a double in Hickstead speed derby

Matt Sampson proved last year’s Hickstead speed derby win on catch ride Top Flight True Carlo was no fluke as he made it a double, securing the win with more than 2sec to spare at the Al Shira’aa Hickstead Derby Meeting.

Paul Crago and Dawn Cooley’s 16-year-old gelding Valentino IX had set an early lead. Jumping ninth of 31 contenders, they set the bar at 98.97sec, having added a 4sec penalty for catching the troublesome gate before the Irish bank.

There were some strong contenders in the field, but each fell by the wayside leaving Paul out in front right up to the wire.

“I’d gone back to the lorry and started packing up and told them to ring me if I was placed,” confessed Paul, who has jumped the son of Andiamo in this class on five occasions, but produced his fastest round by 6sec. “It was left to my mum [Judy Crago] and Dawn [Cooley, the horse’s owner] to sit there watching them all.”

Brazilian rider Carlos Eduardo Moto Ribas were the next to break the 100sec barrier, producing a 99.69 sec round when he caught the middle element of the treble of planks with the Dutch gelding Brilexo.

The 2016 victors Harriet Nuttall and Silver Lift, who have a brilliant track record in this class, added an unexpected 12 sec in penalties, also falling foul of the gate, the Al Shira’aa fence and the first rail of the road crossing to finish with 103.91sec.

Course record holders Guy Williams and Casper De Muze were similarly off the target. The prolifically successful chestnut had four down, breaking the beam in 91.99sec [0.04 off their record time] but adding 16.

With the class running in reverse order of qualifying time — and last year’s winner jumping last — the competition always intensifies as the final few come forward to jump.

Joe Clayton has been producing competitive rounds throughout the show and set off to a blistering start here with 11-year-old Carolus K DHI, only for the gelding to duck out of descending the bank and briefly disappear down the wrong side.

As the class entered the final three, Matt’s girlfriend Chloe Winchester looked on-point with the naturally quick ex-eventer Sportsfield Our Clare but the 11-year-old mare went on to clip the red and yellow fence near the bank, also adding the gate and the first of the Hickstead planks.

Last year, Irishman Paddy O’Donnell’s grey mare Hey There Delilah had scorched round in an incredible 88.71 sec but had three rails, this time they had the gate and the miffle plank to slip into third place in 99.48sec.

Just Matt and Top Flight True Carlo stood between Paul and victory, but the chestnut gelding looked to be in his element as he ate up the first three-quarters of the track ahead on the clock.

It was a year when no one in contention produced a clear and Matt was no exception, also clipping the hard-to-see gate — that is jumped towards the crowd — with Christine Spanner’s British Warmblood.

Despite adding 4sec, they crossed the line with a total of 96.58sec to the rapturous approval of the crowd.

“I just thought I’d do a similar round to last year,” said Matt. “There were quite a lot of experienced horses having fences today and mine did as well — maybe because it was hot and it was taking energy away from them.

“[Even with one down] I thought I wasn’t too far off if I could just keep going. I tried to speed up and the faster you go, the more he tries so it paid off.”
