She produces all of our buying guides and gift guides, as well as organising product testing and bringing you news about the latest products to hit the market. If there’s a new launch, Franchesca is the first person to hear about it. She works with Georgia Guerin to bring you the best deals and is passionate about arming Horse & Hound’s readers with honest, unbiased product reviews. Franchesca loves letting riders and horse owners know what products are coming out, how to make their lives easier and how to spend their money wisely.

Franchesca’s lifelong love of horses started from a very young age as her mother was a riding instructor. She was unbeatable in the lead-rein showjumping and gymkhana games with her pony, Muffit. They regularly attended Pony Club and, as she lives on Hayling Island, spent plenty of time riding on the beach.

After leaving school she went on to study at Sparsholt College, where she completed a National Diploma in equine management and BSc(Hons) degree in Equine Studies. She also competed on the inter-college riding team.

Once graduated, Franchesca went to work at her local tack shop and this is where her love for products really began. After working in retail she moved on to wholesale with Snowhill Trade Saddlery and worked her way up from sales advisor to office manager.

Her next challenge was working at Horse&Rider and PONY magazines as a sales executive. She then became Production Editor, which meant handling everything product related, from buying guides to product testing. She also worked on Equestrian Trade News and Endurance magazine as part of this role.

Franchesca is known at her yard as the “catalogue queen” for her extensive knowledge of brands and products, and she has made it her mission to encourage people to shop with a purpose. She loves putting products through their paces and keeping a finger on the pulse for what's new in safety, such as the best body protectors for children, and fashion. She’s clocked up hundreds of miles in her favourite Aigle wellies and tested litres of the best whitening shampoos, and now dedicates hours of her time sourcing the best products online so you don’t have to.

When she is not putting kit through its paces, she can be found riding, running around after her two miniature dachshunds or with her son making sand castles on the beach.

Franchesca owns an Irish Draught gelding “Sekonda”, and two shire horses, “Roxy” and “Sammy” who she shares with her partner. She also competes with her friend’s 15.2hh Irish Draught mare “Barbie”. Unfortunately for Franchesca, both the Irish Draughts are grey, so she spends a lot of time keeping them clean!

If you have a product you would like Franchesca to know about, please email her on franchesca.slack@futurenet.com
</dc:description>

This rug can also be used as a regular stable rug with an elasticated surcingle and a fillet string.

Equine Magnetix Magnetic rug and neck set

Type: Magnetic

Colours: Blue or navy

Sizes: 5ft – 7ft 3in

RRP: £343

This rug from Equine Magnetix is made from lightweight mesh material with more than 100 2,000 Gauss neodymium magnets – 80 magnets in the rug and 32 in the neck. When a powerful magnet is placed against the body, cellular activity is increased, which can increase the rate at which cells regenerate and repair. It can help to encourage blood flow and increases cellular activity in the body but it’s important to understand that the magnets themselves do not heal.

Magnetic therapy is reported to help…

maintain circulation

reduce muscle tension

aid recovery of muscle fatigue

improve oxygen supply to tissues

How long can you leave a magnetic rug on a horse?

Every rug is different.

</dc:description>

Looking for the best magnetic boots for horses? There’s actually quite a lot choice when it comes to therapy and magnetic boots, but as with the best therapy and magnetic rugs, it can be tricky to work out which ones are right for your horse. There are quite a few variables, which are not all necessarily easy to understand at first – but we’re here to help you compare the options and make the best choice for your horse.

First you need to decide what type of boots, bandages or wraps you’re looking for, and what you’re hoping to gain from purchasing a pair or set. Some can be worn interchangeably on the front and hind legs, while others you will need to purchase separate boots due to the shape – so this is also something to consider. The therapeutic ceramics promote warmth as a thermal barrier, enhancing blood circulation. For this reason it is particularly important to follow the manufacturer’s guidance when using your chosen therapy boots.

Although each different type of therapy boot – be it magnetic or ceramic-infused – works in a slightly different way, they all aim to improve circulation and blood flow. In turn this is thought to increase oxygen supply to the tissue, reduce muscle tension and aid recovery by removing toxins faster and reducing inflammation. Magnets and ceramic fibres are not healing, but rather are thought to create the right environment to encourage the body to heal itself.

Therapy boots or rugs that contain ceramic fibres are designed to reflect the horse’s back into the body. Whereas when magnets are incorporated within boots or rugs, the magnetic properties in the body’s cells will either attract (those that are opposite) or repel (those that are alike) them, which is thought to increase the activity of the cells. The best cooling boots, on the other hand, are designed to reduce the temperature of the internal structures in the lower leg.

When can you use magnetic boots?

Generally, therapy boots are used as part of a horse’s daily routine. Most are designed to be worn at rest in the stable, while some can be worn during exercise or in the field. Likewise, the length of time they should be worn varies – some can be worn up to 24 hours a day, but it’s advisable to test them for a shorter time under supervision to make sure your horse is used to wearing them.

What does Gauss mean?

Gauss refers to the intensity of the magnetic field. Meaning a magnet’s gauss measurement represents the number of magnetic field lines per square centimetre, emitted by the magnet. The higher a magnet is emitting this value, the more lines of magnetism.

You might also like:

9 ice boot options to cool horse’s legs effectively

9 therapeutic rugs your horse will thank you for

Subscribe to Horse & Hound magazine today – and enjoy unlimited website access all year round

Horse & Hound magazine, out every Thursday, is packed with all the latest news and reports, as well as interviews, specials, nostalgia, vet and training advice. She joined the H&H editorial team in 2018, following four years working for other national equestrian titles, including Horse&Rider and PONY magazines. Her previous roles at Horse & Hound include Sub Editor, Products Editor and Senior Content Editor, and she has also been Editor of H&H’s sister site, PetsRadar.

Georgia is now responsible for curating all the features and products-related content on the website. She also manages all the ecommerce opportunities that allow us to give you easy access to the best products at the best prices. Georgia has also writes features covering a wide range of topics in which she offers advice for horse owners and provides essential information for spectators.

Georgia also writes in-depth reviews and buying guides to help you make the best purchases. If a company is launching a new product, she is one of the first people to hear about it and get her hands on it. She has a great knowledge of a wide range of equestrian brands and their ever-evolving product lines, and has been working with them closely since she first began working in equestrian media in 2015.

Not born into an equestrian family, Georgia joined a local children’s charity that taught members how to ride and care for the ponies if they weren’t in a position to have lessons or own their own. She stayed part of the family here, teaching everything she learnt to the younger members while in her teens, until she went to Writtle College (now called ARU Writtle) to study for a degree in equine sports therapy. She graduated with a first class in 2013 and it was during her studies that she realised she wanted to work in equestrian media.

She now owns a Norwegian Fjord gelding who keeps her very busy outside of work, but enjoys assisting with product testing. “Utah” is a yard favourite and is treated like a king by Georgia’s fellow liveries.
</dc:description>

New stable boots to help horses with stiff joints have been launched by Veredus.

The Veredus Magnetick Stable EVO boots are designed to “bring relief from stiffness and support joints”.

They are aimed at older horses suffering with stiff joints – especially in the cold, damp weather – and younger horses in hard work.

The boots have a “Dry Fast Dry” interchangeable “under bandage” – which is a highly absorbent fabric that lines the inside of the boot, wicking moisture away from the leg.

It is fixed securely to the inside of the boot by velcro and can be easily removed for washing.

An elastic velcro fastening system gives support under the fetlock and securely positions the boot around the leg, while avoiding the risk of over tightening.

“The Evo boot has been designed to hug the horse’s leg giving support to tendons and helping reduce after work swellings,” said a spokesman for Veredus.

“A series of magnets is encased in padding, which sit behind the lining around the ligament and tendon area. Magneto therapy stimulates cell activity, which helps to increase the blood flow injured parts. It also speeds relaxes the muscles, reduces swelling and helps to stimulate the production of elastin and collagen.”

The boots come in front and rear design and cost £141.

They come in small, medium and large.

For more information visit: www.zebraproducts.co.uk

Stay in touch with all the news in the run-up to and throughout the major shows and events during 2026 and beyond with a Horse & Hound subscription. Subscribe today for all you need to know ahead of these major events, plus online reports on the action as it happens from our expert team of reporters and in-depth analysis in our special commemorative magazines.
MAGNETISED products are becoming increasingly popular, with leg wraps, rugs and halters now widely available for pre-exercise or rehabilitation use. But can you ride in any of them?

Why magnotherapy?

MAGNOTHERAPY is centuries old, but, like many alternative and complementary therapies, there is little scientific evidence to support its efficacy — although anecdotally it is reported to have many benefits. Some magnetic equine products are said to help prevent injury by warming-up muscle, and alleviate the symptoms of certain physiological conditions by speeding up blood supply and healing time. Magnetic products usually use bipolar systems, with static magnets fixed within the product.

Products for riding in

A recent innovation is the Barnsby FTS Magnetic Crownpiece, a leather headpiece that attaches via Velcro loops to the headpiece of a bridle or headcollar and includes a series of strong magnets. The headpiece is said to have a direct effect on the axis vertebrae at the top of the spine, helping the horse to relax and work in a calmer, softer way, and helping to loosen topline muscles, facilitating freedom of movement.

Show jumpers including Nick Skelton and Swiss rider Christina Liebherr have used a magnetic crownpiece for training and competition, while Margaret Phizacklea MRCVS, an associate at a Suffolk veterinary practice, has used one on her advanced medium dressage horse, Coole Dude, to help keep him calm and relaxed.

“As it’s separate from the bridle, it can easily be changed from one bridle to another,” she explains.

“As for whether it works or not, it’s difficult to say categorically, but I do feel that he goes a little lighter when wearing the crownpiece.”

Other products

MAGNETISED boots are proving popular, although many leg wraps are designed only for use pre- and post-exercise — check before use. There is a range of products available, including Magnet Therapy’s Tendon Boots and Bioflow’s neoprene Horse Boots, both providing brushing protection during gentle exercise.

Eventer Lucy Thompson of Kent-based Equine Sport Therapy has used a variety of magnetic products on her horses, including bell boots to improve hoof condition and magnetic rugs, which she says are particularly useful for reducing stiffness when travelling.

Aerborn produces a range of magnetic products for pre-exercise warming (although not recommended for ridden work), while Equilibrium’s Therapy Magnetic Back Pad is said to relieve stiffness and promote healing.

Ask your local retailer or saddler for details of magnetic products suitable for your horse, and always seek veterinary diagnosis for clinical equine issues.

Information

Magnetic Crownpiece costs around £73

Tel: 01922 621676 www.barnsby.com for a list of retailers.

Equine Sport Therapy Tel: 01732 700912 www.equine-sport-therapy.co.uk

This Q&A was first published in Horse & Hound (11 October, ’07)

Muscular fatigue, cramps and stiffness are the result of a pH imbalance caused by lactic acid.

At its most basic, magnotherapy has something in common with massage, but without the pressure, as it’s said to increase blood flow and assist the removal of toxins and waste products for quick recovery.

Performance can be improved and the chances of injury are dramatically reduced if muscles and joints are properly warmed up before use, and soothing those aching joints and muscles afterwards definitely speeds up the repair process.

“Magnets are a very big thing on the eventing circuit,” says international eventer Lucy Thompson, who runs Equine Sport Therapy along with sports therapist Chris Caden-Parker.

“I’ve used a wide range of them on all my horses. They’re particularly useful for travelling as you’ll find that after a long trip, the horses wearing magnetic rugs definitely come off the box less stiff.”

Connective tissue

The end result of magnetic therapy is to increase the blood circulation.

There’s no doubt that increased blood flow brings healing effects in such instances once the initial inflammation has subsided.

Sally Beves from the Equine Unit at Hartpury College, Glos, investigated the effects of magnetic tendon boots on tendon temperatures.

During her research, Sally used thermography to measure tendon temperatures after the application of Magno-Pulse tendon boots and found that there was no significant increase in tendon temperatures of the magnet-treated limb compared to the control limb after a 12-hour period.

After a 24-hour period, however, there was a significant increase of an average of 2øC of the magnet-treated limb compared to the control limb. A rise of almost 1øC remained in the “magnetised” limb even one hour after the boots had been removed, much longer than the warmth generated by the thermal properties alone of the non-magnetised boot on the control limb.

Bony tissue

Recent studies have proven that those people with fresh or delayed-union fractures do actually benefit from magno-therapy, and results from general public usage suggest that horses with arthritis may be equally as successful.

Research has shown that pulsed electromagnetic fields, as opposed to static magnets, have been successfully used in the treatment of union and non-union fractures and has been observed to healbroken bones in a greatly reduced time in humans

Soft tissue

Muscular stiffness and conditions such as filled legs (from poor circulation, not from inflammation) and windgalls should improve with the use of magnotherapy boots.

Many physiotherapists believe that the magnetic fields (particularly the pulsing fields) can penetrate soft tissue injuries where muscle damage may be too deep or too sore for manual manipulation.

However, others would argue that the static magnets sold for horseowners would never penetrate this far and nor should they in untrained hands.

Horn growth and foot conditions

It has been suggested that the increased circulation that seems to be an effect of magnetic field therapy can help the feet, both in terms of promoting good quality horn growth and easing conditions of the hooves where restricted blood flow is a factor, such as navicular and laminitis.

Event rider Lucy Thompson says she has witnessed some impressive results

“We had three horses that were hard to keep sound and just didn’t respond to the usual feed supplements or hoof dressings,” says Lucy. “One had cracked, brittle feet, one had very slow-growing horn of poor quality and the other had soft, flaky feet. Over a period of about two years, regular use of magnetic bell boots transformed them all.”

Robert Eustace FRCVS of the Laminitis Clinic in Wiltshire is not so impressed, however. “We tried a number of magnetic products some years ago without any success. Horses with laminitis need the correct drugs and good management, not gimmicks. Eighty per cent of cases will get better anyway with good management, then people place the credit with the gimmick!”

Pain relief

Along with the improved waste removal and nutrient-rich blood which is a result of magno-therapy comes drug-free pain relief – very important for athletes of all species who are likely to be tested for illegal drugs.

For horses that are constantly receiving a lot of drugs, magnetic therapy may be used in conjunction with other pain relieving therapies, such as acupuncture, in order to reduce the toxic build up in a horse’s system.

Magnets can be used to target acu-puncture points, so you can benefit from the healing and pain-relieving principles without having to endure the needles, although most therapists continue to use laser for this purpose.

Most experts admit that even where it doesn’t do any good, magnotherapy at least can do very little harm, with the following exceptions.

DO NOT USE MAGNETS:

In the first 48 hours after injury. The circulation-boosting effects will make inflammation and bleeding worse.

On an untreated infection.

On an open wound.

On an area where liniment has been applied in the last 24 hours.

While exercising your horse or if your horse has a metal pin or plate implanted in the affected area.

Before obtaining a proper diagnosis from your vet.

On a horse diagnosed with cancer.

Read about other alternative therapies:

Iridology

Light therapy

Equine sports massage

Leg injuries are the most feared injury among horse owners. Treatments normally include anti-inflammatory drugs and rest.

By following a fitness plan and learning to recognise how your horse is feeling, you can go a long way to avoiding exercise induced injuries. There is also a lot you can do post exercise, to cool and rejuvenate your horse’s legs.

Whether you have an older horse that is starting to stiffen, or a horse with an existing injury, there are plenty of products on the market designed to help relieve stiffness or reduce swelling.

Magnetic therapy boots

A natural therapy that influences the body’s own healing process by boosting circulation.

Blood is an electrical conductor and blood cells have a natural current flowing through them. When injury occurs, they are knocked out ofalignment.

Magnetic therapy can help recharge the cells and put them back in place. It can be used for a range of problems, from muscle strains and windgalls to arthritis and general stiffness. As with any alternative therapy, do check with your vet first. Do not use on open wounds or recent injuries.

There are two types of magnetic therapy: static and electromagnetic. The static type operates with either bipolar magnets working as opposing forces or one powerful magnet placed near a main artery.

Magnets should last a lifetime and there are many products available. Most can be left on overnight, but check manufacturers’ instructions.

Cooling boots

These are used to cool hot, hard-worked, bruised or strained legs.

Some contain crystals that form a gel when soaked in cold water, some use ice packs while others use a hosepipe or incorporate a water pump system.

Check the instructions for how long you need to soak them and how long they can be left on.

If you have been competing on hard ground it’s useful if you can leave them on as part of travel protection for the journey home.

Support boots

Similar in design to normal boots they give extra support. They can be used on horses whose legs are vulnerable, perhaps from a previous injury, but also as a preventative measure.

Reducing the stress on a horse’s legs, reduces stress on all the other joints too, and can also provide extra protection from knocks and strikes.

Q. I am looking for information on treating horses with magnets. Could you tell me how they work and what type of conditions they can be applied to?

Caroline Vie, Surrey

A. Magnets have been used in medicine for thousands of years. Nowadays they can trat non-union fractures, contusions, degenerative bone conditions, delayed wound healing, acute and chronic injury to bone and soft tissue, such as bowed tendons, stretched ligaments and diseases of the back and lumbar regions, as well as helping stiff horses.

There are two major types – the bipolar magnet and pulsating electromagnetic field (PEMF) systems.

The bipolar systems involve a blanket or a boot that is impregnated with magnetic neads set so that the magnetic field of eah bead is the opposite of its neighbours. When blood flows past the beads, icons (charged atoms) are buffeted towards and away from them due to the positive or negative magnetic field. This forces the blood vessels in that area to dilate, allowing better blood flow to the damaged area and speeding up healing.

Pulsating (PEMF) systems use battery power to send a current down a coil of wire housed in the boot or blanket. When electric passes along a wire, an electromagnetic field is thrown out around the wire. The wire then acts as a magnet. If the current is stopped, the field collapses.By turning the current on and off rapidly, the same buffeting effect on the tissues below can be achieved as the beads. The stronger the current, the deeper the penetration. PEMF systems tend to be stronger and have greater tissue penetration than the bipolar magnets.Nick Thompson MRCVS

There are many forms of magno-therapy available to animal owners – from simple magnets attached to collars, to battery or mains operated equine boots and blankets designed to treat specific areas.

The Chinese were the first to realise the benefits of simple magno-therapy 1,000 years ago, by carrying “lode stones”, a natural mineral that possessed a magnetic property.

Today, many people will testify that the simple watchstrap magnet does make a difference to their wellbeing. However, in order to aid the healing of specific injuries, most experts agree that, for maximum benefit, magno-therapy must have a pulsed electric field (Pulsed Electro Magnetic Field Therapy – PEMFT).

The main benefits are gained by the resulting increase in the blood circulation. The magnetic field polarises the blood cells and improves the transfer of substances through the cell membrane. This allows nutrients and oxygen to be delivered more quickly and speeds up the removal of toxins via the lymph system.

“It is also capable of correcting the balance of weak or sick cells which all helps speed up the healing process – there is nothing magical,” says David Mooney, general manager of Magneto-Pulse, which has been supplying machines tothe equine world for the past 14 years.

“This type of therapy is particularly beneficial to soft tissue injuries, as well as being effective with tendon and ligament problems. It has also proved successful in the treatment of non-union fractures. In some instances it is used as a preventative treatment, stimulating bloodflow to a potentially weak area before exercise.”

National hunt trainer John Tuck, who runs a 15-box yard near Tetbury, Glos, is one of many trainers who routinely uses an electro magnetic rug.

He discovered PEMFT when it was suggested by an equine physiotherapist to help treat a horse who was unable to use himself effectively. The blanket contains 12 padded coils which align with key areas – the loins, withers, shoulders and stifles. The coils are connected to a rechargeable battery that slots into the blanket, eliminating the worry of electric cables.

“I soon noticed a difference, but was convinced that it did work when a friend received treatment by PEMFT for a rheumatic shoulder and regained much greater movement of their arm. “There isn’t a day when we don’t use it. It is easy to use, although vital to follow the correct instructions as the wrong setting can aggravate an injury.

Sherry Scott runs the Animal Therapy Trust in Aylesbury, Bucks, an association of animal physiotherapists who work alongside vets.

“Although we use many forms of therapy, we have used PEMFT for more than 20 years and had superb results,” she says. “Magno-therapy must be pulsed to be of benefit and different frequencies have varying effects. A high frequency is brilliant for removing the initial pain and a lower frequency promotes healing. It is an easy form of therapy to use, providing the user is following the specific instructions that have been advised. We have up to 60 cases at any one time using this form of treatment, including horses, dogs, and even tortoises, snakes and birds.”

Sherry treated police horse Sefton with magno-therapy after the horrific injuries he sustained from the bomb in Hyde Park in 1982.

“We use PEMFT extensively on police horses to treat heavy bruising. It is also very good for treating wounds that have been stitched as it prevents swelling, which helps eliminate the possibility of stitches breaking.”

For more information, contact:

Magneto-Pulse (tel: 01208 78448), Medicur (tel: 01432 850396), Centurion: short-term rentals available (tel: 01291 424710),Magno-Pulse (tel: 01249 782491), Bio-Flow/Ecoflow (tel: 01752 841144), Equine Therapy (tel: 01469 530131), Therapy Systems(tel: 01340 810549), Medi-wrap (tel: 01428 658899).
