Scott Brash is crowned world number one: ‘Success comes from the time you invest in your horses’

British showjumper Scott Brash has become the number one ranked rider in the world, according to the latest edition of the Longines Rankings for showjumping.

The double Olympic gold medallist had been hovering in second place behind US rider Kent Farrington in recent months. But a historic run of grand prix successes throughout January has helped propel the 40-year-old to the top spot in the world rankings for the third time in his illustrious career.

“I’m incredibly proud to be world number one again,” said Scott Brash.

“More than anything, it’s a reflection of the extraordinary team around me – the people who work tirelessly every single day, caring for our horses with such love and dedication. They are the ones who make sure the horses are as happy and healthy as they can possibly be, allowing us to do what we do and who keep everything moving forward.”

Scott leads the global standings with 3,459 points, ahead of Kent Farrington in second with 3,415 points. Scott’s Olympic team-mate Ben Maher moves up to third position.

“For me, reaching number one is never about just a few recent results,” said Scott, who racked up an outstanding fifth grand prix success in as many weeks in Doha, Qatar, on Saturday (31 January). He even landed two grands prix in one day, twice.

“It’s something that is built quietly and patiently over many years.”

“This feels so special”: Scott pays tribute to “remarkable” horses

“With horses, success comes from the time you invest in them, the trust you develop, and knowing it’s a long-term journey,” Scott said. “That’s why it feels so special to stand here with such remarkable horses, all of whom feel at the very top of their game.”

In December, Scott topped the prestigious Rolex IJRC Top 10 Final with Hello Chadora Lady and followed up with a historic hat-trick of five-star grands prix – two with Hello Jefferson and one with Hello Mango. He also triumphed in a brace of CSI3* grands prix riding H&H‘s showjumping horse of the year 2025, Hello Folie, and Hello Chadora Lady, all of whom are owned by his great supporters Lady Pauline Harris and Lady Pauline Kirkham.

“This is also a moment to say thank you to my owners, who have supported me for so many years with trust and belief, and to our partners, whose support makes so much possible,” said Scott, who held the world number one position on two separate occasions between 2013 and 2015.

“My focus now remains simple – to keep the horses as fit, healthy and happy as they can be. Everything else follows from that.”

‘Yesterday, I fell off!’: 14-year-old rider turns luck around to win on LGCT debut

Fourteen-year-old Annie Salthouse had the full gambit of experience on her Longines Global Champions Tour (LGCT) debut in London when she fell off her ride Fame in Saturday’s CSI2* 1.15m class, only to turn her luck around with an accomplished victory in Sunday’s final.

“I had a really bad show to start with, I had poles and I fell off him in the ring, so I needed to redeem myself,” said Annie, who is lives in Hertfordshire but trains with Richard Howley in Yorkshire.

“Yesterday I just didn’t trust him, I can go so negative on him, but he’s incredible. He reminds me of a pet Labrador or something, he’s the sweetest thing.”

Annie started riding the 14-year-old gelding, one of Richard’s former CSI5* speed horses, in September but they didn’t quite gel until this summer, when they claimed a victory in the amateur 1.10m final at Bolesworth.

“It was a bit sticky at the start,” said Annie, who is home schooled so she can be flexible with her riding commitments. “He’s a sensitive horse and difficult at times but when we got to Bolesworth it all clicked.

“He’s a very quick horse but he feels like he has a pony stride.”

‘You don’t get time to think’

This CSI2* 1.15m final was held under the unusual “immediate jump off format” — similar to a two-phase, except there is a gap and a bell between rounds, and the second half of the course is then jumped again.

First-to-go Grace Wallace set a long-standing lead with Eau Claire V, before she was usurped in the final throes by Imogen Beecroft (Chablis).

Four riders from the end of the class, Annie cut a swathe through the leaderboard, storming into a 2sec lead.

“The format isn’t quite as good as a normal jump off but you can jump round and see where you need to go, and then you stop and let them have a breather,” she said. “I was very nervous but the best thing about it is you don’t get time to think about going into a jump off and going fast, you just have to go for it!”

Former Quorn field master and pair of home-bred hunters dominate lineup at London LGCT

All-round horsewoman Nicky Hanbury’s journey from the hunting field to the showjumping ring hit a new level when she finished first and fifth in the Hyde Park Stables CSI2* 1.15m on her London Longines Global Champions Tour debut.

Nicky switched disciplines three years ago with her home-bred hunters Two To Tango and Park Polo, who she says have “always had to be careful jumpers as I cut a dash hopping gates as field master of the Quorn!”

She set an early lead in this table A class on seven-year-old Tango, only for three riders to bump her down the rankings. But she snatched back her advantage jumping from final draw on Tango’s half brother, 12-year-old Park Polo, to beat Ireland’s Aisling Byrne to the win with 0.88sec to spare.

“Tango was born with his neck bent backwards and he later developed arthritis, he throws the most amazing jump and never touches a pole but he’s not so quick at turning, as he’s a bit like riding a plank. He has shockwave, injections, a massage rug, a heat rug and physio once a week and he’s worth it!” Nicky said.

“Polo is out of the same dam but he is very different, he’s like riding a pony, and I knew I could do really tight turns on him.”

‘I wanted a real jumping machine’

Both horses were out of a mare Nicky bought for her husband, who was a field master of the Quorn for 35 years, after he broke his neck on the hunting field.

“I wanted a real jumping machine to make sure he was safe and I found her,” Nicky said. “She was only 15.3hh and he’s 6’3” but he field mastered off her for three years.

“Malcolm Pyrah, who I rode for 20 years ago, said to me one day that he had some semen from Talan I could have if I had a mare who was good enough, which she was as she was a grade A by Quidam. I had to say to my husband that I was taking the mare back!

“These two are what I bred [Tango is by Esteban]. I am a very lucky girl, I love them, they are like my children!”

‘Di Lampard has made a tweak here and there’

Nicky’s transition to the show jumping arena has been made smoother as she’s had some “very good guidance” over the years from both Malcolm and her close neighbour, British team manager Di Lampard.

“I’ve known her all my life and she’s helped me with a tweak here and there,” she said. “I’ve had a message from both of them since winning!”

This year Nicky made her British team debut when she took Tango to Italy as part of the veteran European squad, returning home with a team silver medal.

“We were jumping in 40 degrees and he got heatstroke and I had Covid, although I didn’t know it at the time, we had two down in the final round which was uncharacteristic,” she said.

“He came back quite poorly and it’s taken six weeks to recover, although he’s back on fire now, he nearly smacked me off in the collecting ring!”

Fifty-six-year-old Nicky decided to make the trip from Leicestershire to London for the LGCT on the recommendation of Judy Pyrah.

“She said it’s got your name written all over it, have some fun,” she said. “It’s very beautiful here and a bit surreal!”

Leading equestrians call for key horse sport sponsor to help drive ‘new era for equestrian sport’

Leading riders, coaches and veterinary professionals have joined forces to campaign for one of the industry’s biggest sponsors to help bring about “a new era for equestrian sport”.

A Change.org petition, to Longines CEO Matthias Breschan states: “Equestrian sports have several severe welfare issues. Question is, do their sponsors know what they are paying for?”

The petition, started by Norwegian author and podcaster Live Bonnevie, was signed at creation by FEI vet Svein H Bakke and former three-star FEI dressage judge Hege Trulsen, as well as other vets, musculoskeletal practitioners, riders and trainers.

It cites the fact that in 2012, Longines signed a long-term deal with the FEI, as the federation’s “top partner”.

“This was a moment that was described as the beginning of a new era for both equestrian sports and the FEI,” it states. “But what the equestrian sports really needed 10 years ago, and still need today, is a new era with a significantly stronger focus on horse welfare, not only written on documents but practised and implemented in real life.”

The text cites the undercover documentary filmed at the base of top Danish dressage rider Andreas Helgstrand, during which “highly questionable” conditions caused “global outrage” (news, 30 November), “mainly because it is regarded as a symptom, not a unique case”.

The signatories say they start with international events and grand prix dressage, asking Longines to question the FEI on issues including why double bridles are mandatory at grand prix, why “a horse showing clear signs of discomfort and stress” can be scored highly, and why 20 seconds of equine resistance is acceptable before elimination.

They also urge Longines to “question what we teach future generations of riders, if their role models fail to ensure the public that they can protect their horses from harm”.

Sue Dyson, former head of clinical orthopaedics at the Animal Health Trust, was also among the named, founder signatories.

She told H&H most of her co-signers are from Scandinavian countries, where the Helgstrand documentary was more widely viewed.

“I was at a meeting in Germany where everyone was talking about it,” she said. “It was very clear people were disappointed the FEI hadn’t been more proactive in showing they have a role in protecting equine welfare; their statement was pretty low-key.”

Dr Dyson added that she believes the petition is a good idea to raise awareness of the issues, and hopes Longines will put pressure on the FEI.

She cited the fact the FEI has not adopted recommendations, such as one to make double bridles optional in top-level dressage, made by the equine ethics and wellbeing commission.

“Why appoint the commission if you’re not going to listen to it?” she asked. “They worked hard to produce recommendations, which the FEI has chosen to ignore.”

Dr Dyson said she believes “not dissimilar” practices to those shown in the Helgstrand documentary could be found at many yards.

“Which was why the British Dressage convention last month was so refreshing,” she said. “What was on display was lovely, which shows it can be done well, and should be. If the FEI said ‘This is how it must be done’, and what judges must reward, it would encourage much better training, across the board.”

An FEI spokesman told H&H the FEI is “unwavering in its commitment to safeguarding the health and wellbeing of all horses participating in FEI events, and we approach this responsibility with the utmost seriousness”.

“We acknowledge the frustration, particularly when distressing images come to light,” he said. “Despite this, we remain steadfast in our dedication, actively addressing perceived or genuine welfare concerns within the scope of our legislative authority. Additionally, we are proactive in community education initiatives to ensure horses receive optimal care even beyond our jurisdiction. We recognise the importance of transparency and continually strive to enhance our efforts in promoting the welfare of all horses involved in FEI events.”

The spokesman added that horse welfare is “at the core of our values and regulations”, and that “any action or omission which causes or is likely to cause pain or unnecessary discomfort to a horse constitutes a violation of our rules”.

“We are committed to ensuring horses involved in sport experience positive welfare throughout their lives, and that the FEI’s regulations, policies and practices, as well as the wider community’s actions, reflect these principles, and we will continue to address actions and behaviours that are in contradiction with our values,” he said.

The spokesman said all the resources and measures used by the FEI to “proactively address and mitigate welfare risks for horses” are not always widely known, but “it is important to stress that this is the driving factor behind the FEI’s decision-making process and planning”.

“The equine ethics and wellbeing commission delivered their final report to the FEI board in Mexico last month; the final recommendations are being carefully reviewed to establish actionable items and an implementation plan,” he said. “These are high on the FEI’s agenda, with a roadmap for discussion and implementation to be presented at the FEI sports forum 2024. It is important to highlight that some of the recommendations have already been put into play.

“As for the FEI position on the use of the double bridle in grand prix dressage, the FEI is committed to fact-based decision-making and remains open to future rule changes founded on meaningful scientific evidence that would indicate any welfare shortcomings based on its use.

“The FEI encourages all acts of free speech, and especially the opportunity for individuals to express their views and concerns in relation to horse welfare, and remains committed to addressing the concerns raised, and optimising the systems in place to proactively promote equine welfare, mitigate any risks to welfare and raise awareness around the community’s role and the existing processes, mechanisms and systems already in place to safeguard the wellbeing of horses in our sport.”

New stunning venue for glitzy elite showjumping series

A swanky new venue has been added to the line-up for one of international showjumping’s top series.

Lausanne in Switzerland will host a leg of the Longines Masters this summer (20 to 23 June) on the shore of Lake Geneva — the first and only outdoor venue in the series.

It joins Paris, Hong Kong and New York in the now four-strong series.

“The unique Longines Masters’ signature concept combining top sport and lifestyle goes outdoor for the first time and will showcase four days of competition including the iconic Longines speed challenge, the Masters power and the Longines grand prix,” said a Longines Masters spokesman.

“With prestigious partner brands, celebrity guests, unique shopping experiences, fine dining and family activities, the Longines Masters of Lausanne is set to become a unique rendezvous on the sporting and social calendar.”

The series is inspired by the tennis grand slam and features a €1 million prize for three successive grand prix wins across two seasons.

The super grand slam offers a €2.25 million bonus for three consecutive indoor Longines grand prix victories in the same season.

The 2019 Longines Masters kicked-off with Hong Kong in February, where Ireland’s Denis Lynch and new ride 12-year-old Chablis took a convincing grand prix win in a time of 39.35, close to eight seconds clear of Frenchman Simon Delestre and Uccello De Will. Pius Schwizer and About A Dream were third.

The inter-continental series moves to New York next (25 to 28 April) at the newly renovated NYCB LIVE, before heading to Lausanne in June and finally Paris from 5 to 8 December.

Ireland through, GB out ahead of Nations Cup final showdown in Barcelona

Ireland’s showjumpers have made it through to the final eight of the Longines FEI Nations Cup final and will contest Sunday’s showdown for top honours in Barcelona.

In a tense competition on Friday evening (5 October), Great Britain finished 12^th of the 15 teams so will instead contest Saturday’s Challenge Cup alongside Germany, world champions USA, Canada, Brazil, UAE and host nations Spain.

Pathfinder William Funnell cruised round for four faults on Denise Stamp’s Billy McCain, while Harriet Nuttall (A Touch Imperious) ended up as the drop score with 10. The star performance came from Amanda Derbyshire, who jumped clear on Roulette BH, with final rider Holly Smith and her WEG partner Hearts Destiny completing on eight faults, for a team total of 12.

Two countries shared top honours in the opening round of the season finale — Italy and Austria — and they will be joined in the one-round decider by Sweden, Belgium, title-holders the Netherlands, Ireland, Switzerland and France.

Ireland posted a five penalty total, with a clear round from anchorman Darragh Kenny (Balou Du Reventon), just a time-fault for Anthony Condon and SFS Aristio, and Billy Twomey (Kimba Flamenco) coming home on four. The drop score was Shane Breen’s 12-fault round on Ipswich Van De Wolfsakker.

“We wanted to be competitive and all our horses jumped really well,” said Ireland’s chef d’equipe Rodrigo Pessoa. “We are looking forward to Sunday’s final where everything is to play for with everyone starting on a zero score.”

Austria and Italy headed the table with just one fault apiece.

“For us to be in the final already is perfect — now we just need to focus like we did today and let’s see what we can do,” said the Austrian team manager Marcus Wallishauser.

But Italian team rider Lorenzo De Luca added caution: “There’s still a big day ahead — Sunday is going to be huge!”

Saturday’s Challenge Cup kicks off at 21.00 local time (8pm BST) with the final on Sunday afternoon. The full results can be found here.

Top 10 highlights from day one at the London GCT

British success, a flying Dutchman and a very glamorous supermodel — the Longines Global Champions Tour of London has kicked off in tremendous style

Friday dawned and it was the moment we’d all been waiting for — the return of the Longines Global Champions Tour to London. With British success in the ring, a flying Dutchman thrilling the crowds, a stunning location and a super atmosphere, it’s no wonder the riders, crowds and guests were all giving the show a big thumbs up from the Royal Hospital Chelsea. Here are our highlights from day one of the three-day competition…

1. Performance of the day goes to the flying Dutchman Harrie Smolders, who currently heads the rankings in the Global Champions Tour series. He and the 13-year-old mare Zinius (above) scorched round the 1.45m two-phase in top gear to beat a brilliant round from William Funnell and Billy Angelo by just half a second.

2. There were two British successes on day one, so well done to Polly Gredley (Unex Clintan B) and Emily Moffitt (Tipsy Du Terral) for whom the national anthem rang out in the CSI2* classes.

3. Model / petrolhead Jodie Kidd was spotted mingling with the VIP guests. “My dad was a show jumper and I wanted to follow in his footsteps,” said Jodie. “I started modelling to pay for a bigger horse box – the rest is history, but I could have been here!”

4. Of the 202 horses in action at the show this weekend, one of our favourites so far is the bay stallion Aikido Z, who Belgium’s Nicola Philippaerts rode to victory in the 1.50m jump-off class on Friday evening, worth over 30,000euro to the winner. Deceptively quick, careful and willing — we like this horse a lot.

5. Unbelievably, John Whitaker turns 62 tomorrow (Saturday) but the celebrations started early when he and Argento finished fifth in the opening CSI5* of the show. Go Archie!

6. The backdrop of the Royal Hospital Chelsea is simply stunning. One USA rider was heard to comment that it felt like being on the set of Downton Abbey. The arenas have been constructed from scratch on the South Grounds using 1,300 tonnes of sand and it’s lucky we’re not competing this weekend as we’d be too busy looking at the views…

7. Enjoying a busman’s holiday from his team training duties with the Ireland team, Brazilian Olympic gold medallist Rodrigo Pessoa was happy to return to the saddle in the five-star classes, while his daughter Alexa contested the CSI2*: “It’s great to be back in London in this beautiful location,” he said. “Great Britain is real horse country and I am sure the crowd will be behind this event 100%.”

8. Olympic cycling gold medallist Victoria Pendleton, now a keen amateur jockey, also attended the first day of the show in London. “I’m retraining one of my racehorses, so I had a jumping lesson a couple of days ago but I feel quite embarrassed looking at the height I was jumping compared to this!” she said. “Making half a tonne of horse look as light as air is incredible to watch.”

9. The London-themed fences had everyone talking. Course-builder Uliano Vezzani has helped design the set of jumps that include the Underground to the London Eye and a whopping great Big Ben set of wings.

10. And finally… Who would have believed it… the sun finally shone! So what are you waiting for? Grandstand tickets are sold out for Saturday but Sunday’s set to be another thriller so hop on the tube and head on down to the show!

“He makes everything possible”: GCT champion pays tribute to wonder stallion Casall

Rolf-Goran Bengtsson produced a fairytale finish to the 2016 Longines Global Champions Tour in Doha, Qatar. On Saturday evening (5 November) in front of a buzzing crowd, the Swede took a resounding victory in the final grand prix of the season and was crowned champion of champions for 2016 by heading the overall points table.

“It was an evening you can dream of, but for it to come true you never think it is possible,” said Rolf, who secured the lion’s share of a one million euro bonus fund as title-holder, as well as nearly 150,000 euro for his grand prix win.

His closest rival in the overall standings, Edwina Tops-Alexander of Australia, finished in the runner-up spot after clocking a surprise eight faults in the opening round of the grand prix, with Germay’s Christian Ahlmann finishing third on the podium.

“I made it easy for you!” said Edwina.

With this coveted accolade in the bag, Rolf and the imposing 17-year-old Caretino stallion Casall ASK went on to jump a double clear before outsmarting six riders in a tactical jump-off to clinch grand prix victory from final draw.

“Casall still loves the job – he’s so competitive in every ring,” said Rolf. “He makes everything possible.”

German riders Daniel Deusser (First Class Van Eeckelghem) and Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum (Fibonacci) took second and third respectively in this final grand prix of the 2016 season.

We bid farewell to a strong British and Irish contingent in round one, none of whom finished in the top 18. Michael Whitaker felt Cassionato simply wasn’t firing in the Qatar heat and retired. John Whitaker, who enjoyed an otherwise hugely successful show, did well to stay in the saddle after meeting the final vertical on no stride at all with his grand prix ride Ornellaia and Scott Brash just missed the cut for round two, finishing on four faults with Hello M’Lady. Ireland’s Cian O’Connor (Good Luck), Denis Lynch (Campino 344) and Bertram Allen (Hector Van D’Abdijhoeve) all came away with a rail or two down.

Scott Brash crowned world number one

Great Britain’s leading showjumper Scott Brash has returned to the top spot in the latest Longines world rankings.

The 29-year-old Scotsman had held the position as world number one for 16 months from December 2013. However, he lost his position last month to Germany’s Daniel Deusser, dropping to number two in the world. Some good results recently, including dual victory at the Longines Global Champions Tour of Miami, have helped push Scott back up to the top spot in the latest rankings issued today (7 May 2015).

Scott can now proudly display two armbands — one as the Longines world rankings leader and one for heading the Longines Global Champions Tour 2015 series.

Daniel Deusser drops to the number two spot with the reigning Olympic champion and newly crowned winner of the World Cup final in Las Vegas, Steve Guerdat, soaring up to number three in the world. Ludger Beerbaum, who was previously ranked number three, drops to seventh.

Nineteen-year-old Bertram Allen of Ireland just drops out of the top 10, now ranked 11th. Ben Maher (24th) is the next highest placed British rider, with John Whitaker elevating one spot to 34th and Michael Whitaker in 49th. William Whitaker sits just outside the top 50 in 53rd.

Scott Brash heads Global Champions Tour leader board

Scott Brash has returned to the top of the Longines Global Champions Tour leader board after finishing fourth in an unusual competition to decide the third leg of the 2015 series in Spain.

For the first time since Monaco in 2011, the Madrid leg of the Longines Global Champions Tour on Saturday 2 May was won without the need for a jump-off.

This usually three-round competition was sealed when Luciana Diniz of Portugal and her great partner, the 16-year-old stallion Winningmood, produced the sole double clear of the competition to collect the 105,600euro top prize.

“This is a dream for me,” she said. “I had so much confidence today.”

A time-fault in round two meant that Frenchman Philippe Rozier (Rahotep De Toscane) finished in the runner-up spot with the remaining podium place going to Spain’s Manuel Fernandez Saro, competing in his first LGCT Grand Prix, riding the brilliantly named Enriques Of The Lowlands. He jumped two clears but adding a time-fault in each round.

“I’m very proud, especially to win in front of my home crowd,” he said.

Great Britain’s Scott Brash took fourth on Hello Sanctos after succumbing to a first fence stumble in round one but jumping clear thereafter. This result returns him to the top of the 2015 Longines Global Champions Tour standings after his victory in Miami at the start of the season.

“It’s fantastic to be leading once again,” said the former world number one.

Irish riders filled the fifth and sixth places courtesy of Bertram Allen riding the 17-year-old stallion Romanov and Darragh Kenny with the exciting prospect Sans Souci. Both finished with four faults in round one but returned for second round clears to leapfrog up the leader board and in to the serious prize-money.

Bertram Allen: ‘I love the atmosphere and so does Molly’ [H&H VIP]

This was my first time in America. Normally I’m not mad about travelling so far for one competition in case it doesn’t go my way, but for the World Cup final you have to go wherever it’s taking place. Molly Malone V has only flown once before — to Shanghai last year, which was even further away, but it doesn’t bother her.

I expected it to be different and for the arena to be small, and I was right on both counts. But the arena size is the same for everyone and the tented stables — which were cool despite the heat — and warm-up all worked well.

I love atmosphere and so does Molly. A lot of shows in Europe could learn from this — things

like the music between rounds were great.

The format here is different to anything I’ve experienced before, but it’s definitely exciting and means there is everything to play for on the final day.

I didn’t change my approach after the win on the first day — I knew coming out here I’d take each class at a time and do my best in each one.

I don’t think much about the age difference between me and the other jockeys or about competing against the legends. I know most of them quite well now and I don’t get wound up about it. But at the press conference I did feel honoured to be sitting with these riders at such a young age.

Molly will return to my base in Germany now and have an easy time. This week, I go to Antwerp with some other horses — it’s the busy part of the season and I’m not sure when I next have a week off, but I’m looking forward to it.

Scott Brash lands £160k winning double in Miami

World number one showjumper Scott Brash landed a big-money double at the Longines Global Champions Tour (LGCT) in Miami Beach, Florida (2-4 April).

On Friday, he and new ride Hello Forever took top spot in the prestigious annual American Invitational. The Scotsman followed up on Saturday evening by taking the inaugural Miami Beach grand prix with top ride Hello Sanctos, producing one of only two triple clears in the competition.

“It’s just a joy to be here in Miami, but to win the American Invitational and the Global Champions Tour is fantastic,” said Scott, the title-holder of the past two LGCT championships. ““It’s a fantastic start to win the first leg but there’s a long way to go – it’s a tough tour to win.”

The Tour celebrates its 10th anniversary this year and this stunning Miami Beach location proved a popular venue for this season’s series to be launched. Saturday’s $600,000 grand prix attracted a huge throng of spectators.

“We never thought my horses could win both,” said Scott, who collected nearly $200,000 for his win in this 2015 season opener – he landed a record-breaking three LGCT grands prix in the 2014 series. “Sanctos is a legend, he’s magnificent, he’s the horse of a lifetime.”

Second place went to Qatar rider Bassem Hassan Mohammed riding a slightly slower clear on the big-jumping chestnut Palloubet D’Halong and the final spot on the podium went to Belgian rider Pieter Devos (Candy), who collected four faults in the four-rider jump-off. Frenchman Roger Yves Bost took fourth after Nippon D’Elle glanced off on a tight turn back to a vertical, finishing on five faults. Denis Lynch was the best placed Irishman in 12th on Ho Go Van De Padenborre.

Scott Brash wins the 2014 Longines Global Champions Tour

Scott Brash has retained his title as the Longines Global Champion Tour winner for the second year in a row.

Sweden’s Rolf-Goran Bengtsson and Casall Ask won the grand prix of Doha, Qatar on Saturday night (15 November) under the spotlights of the Al Shaqab stadium and finished the 2014 Tour with 243 points. Scott Brash finished fourth in this three-round season finale – which rumbled into the most nailbiting of competitions – with the 12-year-gelding Hello Sanctos, to complete the season on equal points with Rolf. However, Scott’s three wins over the season versus Rolf’s two, meant that the overall title went to the world number one. He collected a cheque for 294,500euro for his win, plus 45,000euro for his grand prix fourth.

“He’s a winner, a horse in a lifetime,” said Scott, who jumped a double clear but picked up an uncharacteristic time-fault in the opening round. “I could have slapped myself for that!

“I often wonder if he’s been jumping a lot, but his strike rate is phenomenal.”

Ludger Beerbaum came in to the final round as the Tour leader but, when his top mare Chiara had to be stood down after a mild bout of colic, the German rider had to rely on number two string Zinedine. A hefty 17 faults in round one meant Ludger had to sit back and await his fate while his two rivals Rolf and Scott progressed and he was resigned to finish third in the standings.

“Everyone can understand my disappointment, but what these two [Rolf and Scott] did today was world class,” he said.

Hello Sanctos’s owners Lady Harris and Lady Kirkham travelled to Qatar to witness their gelding help Scott to a second GCT championship, just a week after Scott celebrated holding the world number one spot for a whole year. Scott’s wins on the 2014 tour came in Cannes, Estoril and in front of his home crowd at the London leg of the Global Champions Tour.

Teenage showjumper wins big in LA

Belgian teenager Jos Verlooy (pictured) picked up the top spoils of $156,000 at the Los Angeles Masters at the weekend (25-28 September).

Riding Domino, the 18-year-old son of showjumper and dealer Axel triumphed over 2012 Olympic champion Steve Guerdat and Albfuehren’s Paille in the Longines Grand Prix of Los Angeles yesterday (Sunday 28 September).

“My horse jumped super. I had already a good feeling in the first round. The jump-off worked out exactly as I wanted,” said Jos.

“The idea was actually to put the pressure on the rest of the field. But when Steve (Guerdat) came in, I was very nervous. He’s one of the best riders in the world and it’s super for me that I could be first and he second… Sorry Steve!”

Steve praised Jos’s ride. “Jos did a great job and he absolutely deserved the win. I am satisfied with my second place and I am not thinking about what I could have done differently, but just about how to work and make it different next time. “Albfuehren’s Paille is very new — it was only our fourth big class,” he added.

US rider Georgina Bloomberg finished third on Juvina.

Scott Brash was best of the Brits with eight-year-old Hello M’Lady, after his intended ride, Hello Annie, knocked herself on the flight over. He finished 8th, not having made the jump off.

Horses touch down in California for LA Masters [VIDEO]

The Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC) on the west coast of USA has been transformed into a five-star showjumping venue this week for the Longines LA Masters (25-28 September).

Thirty six riders, including Great Britain’s world number one rider Scott Brash and Michael Whitaker, world individual silver medallist Patrice Delaveau, 2012 Olympic champion Steve Guerdat, Dutch team gold medallist Gerco Schroder and USA rider Jessica Springsteen will take part in four days of indoor jumping, competing for a prize-fund of over $1million.

On Sunday (21 September), 51 horses touched down in California on a chartered Emirates flight from Liege, Belgium, ahead of the first class on Thursday (see video top).

Vande Capelle of European Horse Services explained: “We think we are making history, or at least equestrian history in Los Angeles, with the arrival of 51 horses for the Longines LA Masters.

“It takes a lot of preparation. We have been working for two months trying to co-ordinate everything and the preparation is 80% of the work. This flight took off from Leige airport in Belgium, which is a specialist airport for horse traffic. They do a lot of these horse charters. We also set up a centre in Leige of the horses so they can relax before they go on the flight.

“Quarantine will be done here in California. Unlike normal imports, who are done at the official USCA import centre, these horses can come straight to LACC to the show stables where they will be held in quarantine until Monday at least.”

The horses were transported from the airport to LACC in massive horse transport trucks.

Vande was relieved when the final batch of horses arrived: “Thank god we are here with the last group of horses. The last two trucks have just arrived. We are so excited to be making history here in downtown Los Angeles.

“It was a long trip, the flight took just under 11 hours, but we had our vet on board. We had our flight professional — a guy who is only flying horses, that’s his daily job. As far as it looks, all horses are well. We have no injuries and no sick horses. That’s the aim.”

Scott Brash triumphs in London GCT thriller

Scott Brash and Hello Sanctos jumped a sensational triple clear in front of the home crowd in London to win the Longines Global Champions Tour grand prix and pocket a cool €148,500.

“I feel like the luckiest person right now,” said Scott, 28, who heads to the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in France as part of the Great Britain team at the start of September.

Last year, it was his British team-mate Ben Maher and Cella who triumphed in the inaugural London GCT at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, in one of the greatest jump-offs of the series. This year, it was Scott who soared round 5sec faster than Ludger Beerbaum and Zinedine, demoting the legendary German rider to the runner-up spot.

“Jumping in front of our home crowd gives us all a real lift,” added Scott, who received a standing ovation and rapturous applaud from the packed grandstands in the Horse Guards Parade Ground in central London.

Taking third was Dutchman Maikel Van Der Vleuten riding VDL Groep Verdi who faulted against the clock with last-drawn rider Katherine Dinan of USA unfortunately hitting the deck when her horse refused at the double in this four-rider jump-off.

World’s top riders head to Horse Guards

Nine of the top 10 showjumpers in the world head to central London later this month (14–16 August) for the Longines Global Champions Tour (LGCT) five–star show at Horse Guards Parade.

World number one Scott Brash and number two Ben Maher will line up against top names including Germany’s Ludger Beerbaum and Marcus Ehning, French riders Kevin Staut, Penelope Leprevost and Patrice Delaveau, USA’s Jessica Springsteen, McLain Ward and Laura Kraut and Canada’s Eric Lamaze.

LGCT Tour leader Edwina Tops-Alexander, Olympic champion Steve Guerdat and recent Aachen grand prix winner Christian Ahlmann will also be in action.

Other British showjumpers competing at the three-day show include Michael Whitaker, Peter Charles, Mark Armstrong, Jessica Mendoza and Alexandra Thornton. Ireland will be represented by Cameron Hanley, Mark McAuley and Conor Swail.

Scott Brash (pictured) is the reigning LGCT champion and has already won two legs in the 2014 season in Cannes, France, and Estoril, Portugal, and finished third in the German leg in Hamburg.

“It is great to be at such a fantastic venue. This is a very important international event for British showjumping and all credit to everyone involved in organising and supporting it,” said Scott, who is on the shortlist to represent Great Britain at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG) in France next month (2-7 September).

This is the second time the LGCT heads to London. Ben Maher and Cella thrilled the crowds with their grand prix-winning round at the Olympic Park last year, but this is the first time that Horse Guards in London hosts an international equestrian event.

“It is a huge privilege to bring the tour to London again this year,” said event organiser Peter Phillips.

“After the success of the inaugural event in 2013 at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, we wanted to build on that and it doesn’t get much better than the iconic setting of Horse Guards Parade to host the Diamond League of showjumping. We once again welcome back the best riders and horses in the world in what will be their final appearance before heading off to WEG.”

Princess Haya will not seek a third term as FEI President

In a surprise announcement, Princess Haya has said that she will not seek a third term as FEI President.

Earlier this year, proposals were put forward to change the rules to allow the FEI President to stand for a third four-year term.

But today Princess Haya, who was elected in 2006, announced that she would not seek to extend her presidency beyond November 2014.

“After my election in 2006, I proposed limiting FEI Presidents to two four-year terms… because it is essential to ensure fresh thinking and avoid a sense of entitlement,” she said.

“I cannot in good conscience put aside my beliefs and the commitment I made seven years ago now that the term limit I supported applies to me,” she added.

According to the FEI, the third term proposal was put forward by FEI regional group chairs and national federations.

Princess Haya said she was “honoured” by their efforts, but was “confident” they would understand “why I feel I must keep my word when my current term ends next year”.

Princess Haya has been instrumental in brokering a number of lucrative sponorship deals for horse sport — including a nine-figure deal with watchmaker Longines and £13.4m from the Saudi Equestrian Fund to help shore up the showjumping Nations Cup.

But some national federations have said they would oppose any attempt by Princess Haya to serve a third term as FEI President.

They have pointed to an alleged “conflict of interest” between her role as the arbiter of clean sport and her marriage to Sheikh Mohammed, whose endurance and racing interests have been caught up in recent doping scandals.

In my first meeting in Lausanne with the FEI Bureau after my election in 2006, I proposed limiting FEI Presidents to two four-year terms. I suggested that reform, which was later adopted as an FEI Statute, because it is essential to ensure fresh thinking and avoid a sense of entitlement within the leadership of an International Sport Federation.

Whilst I very much appreciate and am honoured by efforts of the FEI Regional Group Chairpersons and the National Federations to amend the FEI Statutes to permit me, or any FEI President to seek a third term, my views on the benefits of a two-term limit have not changed since the day I was elected. I love being FEI President. I am passionate about the work and our sport. I love the people I work with at the National Federations and at headquarters.

However, I cannot in good conscience put aside my beliefs and the commitment I made seven years ago now that the term limit I supported applies to me. I am deeply grateful to all the National Federations that favour changing the Statutes to allow me a third term. I am confident they will understand why I feel I must keep my word when my current term ends next year.

I was first elected to this job seven years ago because our National Federations wanted transparency, good governance and change and I promised a transformational presidency. Together, through thick and thin, we have achieved more than 80% of all pledges laid down in my manifesto and programme in an open, democratic and transparent manner. I am so very proud of the people who worked together with me to achieve this.

My focus in my final year in office is on delivering the remaining pledges. I will complete this shared mission with respect, determination and energy — and with the support of the entire community and above all the help from 132 National Federations.

I intend to leave the FEI in November 2014 knowing that our International Federation is fit for the future. I will work as hard as ever towards that goal until my final day in office. And then I will step aside, confident that I have done the right thing.

Michael Whitaker wins £91,000 at Hong Kong Masters

Michael Whitaker made the trip to Hong Kong a lucrative one by winning €106,000 (£91,100) in the Longines Masters Grand Prix on Saturday 

In the first round 27 competitors, from 12 nations jumped the 1.6m course.

Fifteen went clear to compete in the second round and French rider Patrice Delaveau, on Lacrimoso 3 HDC, was the fastest, to win this CSI***** in just 43.06sec.

Close behind were Michael and his 11-year-old chestnut gelding Viking V, who completed in 48.56sec.

Patrice’s countryman, Kevin Staut, was third aboard his young horse, Estoy Aqui de Muze.

Michael paid homage to Delaveau, who won four of the six competitions held during the inaugural Hong Kong Masters (28 February-2 March).

“It is incredible what he has done over the past three days. I just wish he could have been here next week instead,” said Michael.

New deal shores up UK’s showjumping Nations Cup leg

Hickstead has confirmed that Britain’s Nations Cup leg will go ahead, following reassurances from the series’ new sponsor that it will receive enough money.

In November, horse sport’s global governing body the FEI announced a new-look Nations Cup series, with a four-year sponsorship package worth £13.4million from the Saudi Equestrian Fund.

As Europe’s Nations Cup shows are obliged to offer prize-funds totalling £168,000, Hickstead told H&H that it might not be able to afford to put on the class as it faced a shortfall of around £150,000.

But a new agreement between the FEI and luxury watchmaker Longines has put paid to those doubts.

The deal — the largest struck by the federation — makes Longines the FEI’s “top partner” and official timekeeper, pushing out long-term sponsor Rolex.

An FEI spokesman told H&H that Nations Cups organisers would “benefit substantially” from the Longines partnership.

Hickstead director Edward Bunn confirmed that “increased funding” from Longines and the FEI meant they had been able to preserve the Nations Cup.

The Longines-FEI partnership is worth a nine-figure sum over 10 years.

It means that the FEI Nations Cup, FEI World Cup jumping series, the World Equestrian Games, endurance World Championships and the world rankings will all run under the Longines name.

Rolex, which was title sponsor of the World Cup and the rankings, has been edged out.

In a rather terse statement, Rolex said it was “disappointed”, but would continue to be involved with horse sport.

But H&H has learnt that the FEI’s deal with Longines has thrown up certain anomalies.

Although Rolex can still sponsor individual FEI-sanctioned events — such as the Rolex Kentucky Horse Trials — it was not clear whether it could still be the event’s official timekeeper.

For FEI-named series, there will be “a short transitional period” to phase out other sponsors. At the end of that period, “no events with sponsors in the same brand sector as Longines can be part of the series”.

This appeared to come as a surprise to Aachen; the showground has a long relationship with Rolex.

“Aachen has a long-term contract with Rolex and it is clear that Rolex will have all timekeeping rights here,” said a spokesman.

Longines to sponsor World Cup jumping series

Longines will take over from Rolex as sponsor of the FEI World Cup jumping series from October 2013.

A long-term sponsorship deal — the biggest ever to be struck with the federation — makes Longines the FEI’s “top partner” and official timekeeper.

“This is the beginning of a new era for our sport and the FEI,” said FEI president Princess Haya.

Longines is owned by Swatch, which was taken over in 1985 by the late Lebanese entrepreneur Nicolas G Hayek.

His son Nick Hayek Jnr is now the chief executive.

An official “signing ceremony” to mark the deal will take place in Lausanne on 15 January.

Rolex was unavailable for comment, but had been the World Cup jumping series sponsor since 2007.

Nicky’s transition to the show jumping arena has been made smoother as she’s had some “very good guidance” over the years from both Malcolm and her close neighbour, British team manager Di Lampard.

“I’ve known her all my life and she’s helped me with a tweak here and there,” she said. “I’ve had a message from both of them since winning!”

This year Nicky made her British team debut when she took Tango to Italy as part of the veteran European squad, returning home with a team silver medal.

“We were jumping in 40 degrees and he got heatstroke and I had Covid, although I didn’t know it at the time, we had two down in the final round which was uncharacteristic,” she said.

“He came back quite poorly and it’s taken six weeks to recover, although he’s back on fire now, he nearly smacked me off in the collecting ring!”

Fifty-six-year-old Nicky decided to make the trip from Leicestershire to London for the LGCT on the recommendation of Judy Pyrah.

“She said it’s got your name written all over it, have some fun,” she said. “It’s very beautiful here and a bit surreal!”

It cites the fact that in 2012, Longines signed a long-term deal with the FEI, as the federation’s “top partner”.

“The problems are not unique to dressage, but embrace the other sports as well, and we fear the horse industry itself is at the tipping point of losing its social licence to operate,” the petition states.

They also urge Longines to “question what we teach future generations of riders, if their role models fail to ensure the public that they can protect their horses from harm”.

Sue Dyson, former head of clinical orthopaedics at the Animal Health Trust, was also among the named, founder signatories.

She told H&H most of her co-signers are from Scandinavian countries, where the Helgstrand documentary was more widely viewed.

“I was at a meeting in Germany where everyone was talking about it,” she said. “It was very clear people were disappointed the FEI hadn’t been more proactive in showing they have a role in protecting equine welfare; their statement was pretty low-key.”

Dr Dyson added that she believes the petition is a good idea to raise awareness of the issues, and hopes Longines will put pressure on the FEI.

“Why appoint the commission if you’re not going to listen to it?” she asked. “They worked hard to produce recommendations, which the FEI has chosen to ignore.”

Dr Dyson said she believes “not dissimilar” practices to those shown in the Helgstrand documentary could be found at many yards.

An FEI spokesman told H&H the FEI is “unwavering in its commitment to safeguarding the health and wellbeing of all horses participating in FEI events, and we approach this responsibility with the utmost seriousness”.

The spokesman added that horse welfare is “at the core of our values and regulations”, and that “any action or omission which causes or is likely to cause pain or unnecessary discomfort to a horse constitutes a violation of our rules”.

The spokesman said all the resources and measures used by the FEI to “proactively address and mitigate welfare risks for horses” are not always widely known, but “it is important to stress that this is the driving factor behind the FEI’s decision-making process and planning”.

“As for the FEI position on the use of the double bridle in grand prix dressage, the FEI is committed to fact-based decision-making and remains open to future rule changes founded on meaningful scientific evidence that would indicate any welfare shortcomings based on its use.
