The 20-time champion jockey Sir AP McCoy is taking on another sporting challenge in his retirement as he runs the TCS London Marathon this month (26 April).

AP will take on the 26.2 miles for the Matt Hampson Foundation, which provides advice, support, relief and treatment for people who have sustained (primarily sporting-related) serious injury or disability.

Matt launched the charity following his own life-changing spinal injury during an under-21 England rugby training session in 2005 and will also be taking part in the marathon. Matt was paralysed from the neck down in the accident and breathes using a ventilator, which his racing wheelchair has been adapted to carry.

AP said he had “no desire to do a marathon” before he understood the work of the Matt Hampson Foundation.

“My good friend Graham Lee had a very successful horseracing career before a spinal injury in 2023,” said AP.

“Alongside his wife Becky and their family, Graham had a lot to deal with after his accident but, as soon as he left hospital, he visited the Foundation’s Get Busy Living Centre in Leicestershire. Matt was there to meet him, ready to talk, ready to listen and ready to offer support.”

He added: “Matt and the team have been at Graham and Becky’s side ever since, offering physical and emotional support, showing how to ‘get busy living’ after serious injury.

“I have seen how Matt and the team help the charity’s beneficiaries and, when he announced that he was entering the 2026 London Marathon, I wanted to show my own appreciation and decided to participate too.

“Together, we are trying to raise awareness of the foundation and raise the funds required to help their work in changing lives.”

A young eventer whose mother and grandmother both suffered serious cross-country falls is taking on the London Marathon with her father to help towards a cure for paralysis.

Tabitha Taylor, 18, will be one of the youngest taking part on 26 April, in aid of charity Spinal Research. She will line up alongside her father Jeremy, 58, who has completed 53 marathons since 2007.

Tabitha’s mother Amanda, who evented to five-star level, was “lucky to walk away” after a bad fall at Highclere Castle in 2002 and her grandmother also broke her back twice in falls.

“My mum and grandmother were very lucky, but I also know Saffron Cresswell and have had lessons with Nicola Wilson so I know just what can happen,” Tabitha said. “This is definitely a cause that means a lot to me and my dad.

“He has done a lot of running before but this will be a big first for me. I do a lot of school sport and have been doing some hilly loops at home, but the distance will be a big challenge.”

Jeremy, who runs the Cricket St Thomas Estate, near Chard, will be taking part in his eighth London Marathon, but his first with his daughter.

“It will be something really special to cross the line with her, especially doing this together for a cause which is so close to both our hearts,” he said.

“Amanda’s horse landed on top of her and she suffered crushed vertebrae and a broken neck which led to major surgery to have massive bolts inserted to support her spine.

“She was incredibly lucky and Tabitha’s grandmother has also broken her back a couple of times in falls so we are both really motivated to raise as much as we can to support Spinal Research for those that have not been so fortunate.”

Spinal Research charity funds life-changing work

A spokesperson for Spinal Research said someone is paralysed owing to a spinal injury every two hours in the UK. The charity funds and supports global research into treatments and therapies.

Head of audience and community Suzanne Redding said: “With the first function-restoring treatment in history now available and more therapies coming, we really need the money to get these life-changing breakthroughs from the lab to the 105,000-plus people living every day in the UK with a devastating spinal cord injury.

“So, we are incredibly grateful to Tabitha and Jeremy for joining this year’s London Marathon TeamSpinal. Every pound raised takes us a step closer to our goal of curing paralysis”.

A young event rider is running the TCS London Marathon in support of the mountain rescue team that came to her aid after a riding accident.

Freya Donoghue, 21, was out hacking in November 2019 when she was knocked off by a tree.

“I live in a remote area in North Yorkshire and the ambulance service couldn’t access me up the hill,” she told H&H.

“The Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team used the What3Words app to find my exact location and sent a team out.

“I am so grateful to have walked out of hospital and be back doing what I know and love – riding and running – even more so knowing that others around me have not been so lucky.”

Freya’s mother, Liz, spoke to H&H at the time, to raise awareness of the location app what3words, which helps emergency services pinpoint people in difficult to reach areas.

Freya was accepted into the marathon through the ballot, which means that raising money is not a requirement of entry, but she has chosen to do so.

“I applied for the London Marathon for a personal achievement, but also to raise money for the Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team to repay them for their amazing work,” said Freya.

She added that she has been in touch with the team frequently since her fall and wants to do anything she can to help the volunteer-run group, which relies solely on donations.

“I would absolutely love to reach my target for the team as without them, I may not have been so lucky to be running this marathon,” she said.

H&H has previously reported that reigning European champion Ros Canter will take on the marathon 10 days before her tilt at reclaiming the Mars Badminton Horse Trials title.

Ros first signed up for the marathon with Saffron Cresswell, before the latter’s life-changing fall at Bramham. She is now running the marathon in support of Saffron to raise money for Spinal Research.

“Saffron is a constant source of motivation in my training,” said Ros, adding that every time she thinks about walking, “Saffron pops into my mind”.

Ros will be supported on the day by her five-year-old daughter, Ziggy.

“Ziggy and Chris, my husband, will be coming to watch. I’ve probably spent more time seeing where the best place is for a child to watch than anything else,” said Ros.

“She’ll be a bit of a handful, but she’s determined she thinks she could run with me.”

Rider Rachel Punch is raising money for The Brain Tumour Charity in memory of three family members.

“The first time I ran the London Marathon was back in 2004. Sadly my father was terminally ill with a brain tumour that year and whilst I had some village friends around me that day there was no family or friends,” she said. “I then stopped running and didn’t pick it up again for 15 years, when my sister realised that the London Marathon in 2020 would be on her 50th birthday and thought it would be fun if we did it together.”

The three sisters all entered, but only Rachel got a spot, and the others continued to support her through training.

“I eventually ran in October 2022, due to the pandemic deferrals, and it was such a special day with all my family and sisters cheering me on,” she said.

“I’ve been lucky again with another ballot place this year and can’t wait to experience the best marathon in the world on 27 April.”

Rachel was set to warm up by representing Rugby Riding Club at a dressage championships.

Rachel and her mare, Annie, were entered in an elementary class at the British Riding Clubs intermediate dressage championships earlier today (Saturday, 26 April) before zipping down to London tonight.

Student Lucy Thompson will hot-foot it from the Marathon to compete at university riding regional championships three days later.

Lucy, who is studying for an adult and mental health nursing degree at Exeter, balances her education with managing her own four horses, running, and university riding. She is running for mental health charity Mind.

“Mental health issues can affect anyone at any time,” she said. “As equestrians, we are often alone in the depths of winter and are known as being stoic, but I wanted to raise awareness for people struggling with their mental health that there is support out there.

“Training in the winter has been tough, often in the dark or in the rain but it has been a great addition to my hectic schedule. Running has given me a purpose alongside the horses, and I cannot wait to run on Sunday.”

Sarah Lintott has found riding has helped her training as she prepares to make her London Marathon debut.

“In my 50th year I decided to do what I have wanted to do since uni – run the marathon,” said Sarah.

“I managed to get a charity place running for the fantastic charity The Circulation Foundation, to help raise awareness of vascular disease.”

She added: “Riding has played a big part my training, not just by helping to build up my fitness – especially the core and leg workouts thanks to Lois Hart Dressage and LB Equestrian – but also mentally.

“My boy Jasper has been a listening ear and a shoulder to cry on many times along with loads of encouragement and support from my equestrian buddies, who also think I am nuts to be running this!”

Scottish-based rider Anna Conlon has been juggling training with caring for her two horses, competition, and working full-time. She is fundraising for Myeloma UK, which she said is a charity that has affected her family directly and she would love to give back.

A team of eight runners will take on the 26.2-miles for The Donkey Sanctuary.

Maria Vaughn, will travel from Rayne in Louisiana, US, where she has nine donkeys, along with mules, horses, and other animals. She rescued her first donkey, Molly, in 2012, and is passionate about equids.

Luke Roche from Stonehouse in Gloucestershire will be pulling on his running shoes in memory of his late grandad, who loved donkeys and the charity.

“Seeing the incredible care and dedication the teams provide every day made a lasting impression on me, and I knew I wanted to contribute to such a meaningful cause in my grandad’s memory,” said Luke.

“He always said, ‘Donkeys deserve to be loved,’ a sentiment that has stayed with our family.”

The team also includes one of the charity’s welfare advisors, Jess Bush.

Jess said: “I wanted to run the marathon for The Donkey Sanctuary, as I want to raise as much money as I can to help towards the care of the donkeys we support, both in our sanctuary and the community. Also running for the charity I work for feels amazing and close to my heart.”

Olympic gold medal-winning eventer Ros Canter is preparing to take on the London Marathon in support of her friend Saffron Cresswell, who was paralysed in a cross-country fall.

Ros and Saffron had both entered the ballot for this year’s race. And after Saffron broke her back in two places and sustained damage to her spinal cord, in the fall at Bramham last June, Ros decided to run in aid of Spinal Research, which aims to restore function and movement for people with spinal cord injuries.

Ros was a keen runner growing up and completing the London Marathon was something she had always wanted to do but one that now has special significance.

“Saffron and I both entered the ballot and wanted to run it together,” she said. “Neither of us got a ballot place but after her accident I really wanted to do something to support her and to raise money and awareness around spinal cord injuries.

“Saffron is absolutely incredible. I have nothing but admiration and respect for how she has been able to pick herself and look forward to new challenges. She’s exceptional and a real inspiration.”

Ros has been squeezing her training runs around her eventing training, preparation and competition schedule, inspired by Saffron, who was paralysed from the chest down as a result of the fall. She has already tried wheelchair racing and is looking into a new career as a presenter and inspirational speaker.

“When I instantly couldn’t feel my legs I understood straightaway what was happening and potentially how bad it was,” she said.

“I’ve feel I’ve always known Ros. Last winter I went for a two-week training stay with her and mentioned that I’d love to run the London Marathon and we decided to enter the 2025 ballot together.

“I got the news I hadn’t got in the day I arrived at Yorkshire Regional Spinal Injuries Centre to begin my rehab. Ros has been incredibly supportive throughout and it’s brilliant that she’s entered to raise funds for Spinal Research.

“It’s been really hard going from being so fit and focused on my career doing what I love to facing a very different future, but I’m positive and determined to find new goals and purpose.”

A rider who broke her neck in a cross-country fall is running the TCS London Marathon to support horse welfare.

This will be the first marathon for Ailsa Wates, who has competed to five-star with her mother Pip Wates’ Woodlands Persuasion (“Perry”).

Ailsa fractured her C4 and C5 vertebrae in a fall with Perry at Bramham Horse Trials in June 2022.

She is now running the marathon to raise money and awareness for World Horse Welfare, a charity she has worked with over the past year, in support of the work they do.

“Having that kind of fall made me really appreciate the fact that I’m able to exercise, run, and ride. I feel very fortunate that I get to ride again and run again, to properly sweat and work hard again,” she told H&H.

“I had a lot of great help. The people at Bramham were really amazing. I was about to get up and by the time I was awake, there was the paramedic. I said my neck is a bit tingly and he said ‘don’t move’ – I didn’t move once from the second I hit the floor.”

Ailsa also received help from the British Eventing Support Trust in the aftermath of her fall. She returned to competition weeks after the accident and although she had healed physically, she hadn’t realised how much it had affected her until she was back at an event.

“The British Eventing Support Trust was really helpful. I had some sessions from them with a sport psychologist, which made a big difference,” she said.

After her fall, she got in touch with World Horse Welfare and has been working with the charity in support of the work it does. This includes a webinar with Pippa Funnell last December about welfare and the competition horse, looking at how to ensure their essential needs are met. It is something she puts at the forefront of her ethos.

Ailsa and Perry are now looking ahead to jumping in the under-25s class at Royal Windsor Horse Show. But before that, there is Sunday’s 26.2-mile run to conquer.

“I haven’t had to tailor my training too much because of my neck,” said Ailsa, who has instead been putting the Equine Aqua Training water treadmill at her mother’s business to use for a niggle picked up during her marathon training.

“I got a minor stress fracture in my foot while training and so I’ve been using that. It was way harder than I thought!”

Her final preparations have gone well and Ailsa is targeting a sub four-hour run.

“I was really lucky to get a space for World Horse Welfare,” she said. “It’s such a great thing to be able to do, I’m really looking forward to the whole thing, all the people there to support and I really appreciate the fact that I’m able to do it.”

Riders are gearing up in preparation to run the 26.2 miles of the TCS London Marathon for charities next Sunday (23 April).

Elite amateur five-star event rider Max Gordon is balancing his marathon training with the eventing season and his job as a barrister. He will be hitting the capital’s streets for charity Children With Cancer UK.

He joins other five-star event riders, including Kirsty Short (pictured, top), who has had nine five-star starts with her now retired great campaigner Cossan Lad, and Xanthe Goldsack in raising money for the same charity. Kirsty, also a keen boxer, is drawn in wave one.

Other five-star names on the start list include Sam Ecroyd and Emily King as well as their head girl, Sarah Morrilly. Emily is prepared for all ground conditions, having done training runs in wellies while at Thoresby, although there is little chance of the recent heavy rain changing the going stick. All three are raising money for the Brain & Spine Foundation, which supports people affected by neurological problems.

Five-star rider Ailsa Wates is also gearing up to run the 26.2 miles for World Horse Welfare.

Will Bishop, who has had a belting season in the hunt ride calendar, is swapping hedges for trainers as he runs for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Equestrian charities also have a strong hand of runners. These include Marianne Davies, running for global working animal charity SPANA, of which she is a trustee.

“Having visited many of the countries where SPANA works, I have seen first-hand the essential role played by working animals in vulnerable communities, helping families to earn a small income and survive,” said Marianne.

“Working animals often live short, painful lives in terrible conditions, with no available veterinary care when they are sick or injured. This is why SPANA’s work is so vital – improving the welfare of working animals across the world, so they can live healthy and valued lives.”

Sylv Hull and Rebecca Walker are among those running for Brooke, another working animal charity.

After losing her own horse in 2018, Sylv wanted to tie running with her passion for animal welfare.

“Like most runners, the London Marathon is something special to tick off the bucket list but the knowledge that I’m running for such a worthy cause adds a profound dimension to my training,” said Sylv. “All the early starts and rainy long runs are for something meaningful and the fact that friends and family have sponsored me spurs me on.”

This year’s event will be Rebecca’s sixth London Marathon.

“I am running for Brooke again because having grown up with horses my whole life, I want to help these beautiful working animals along with donkeys and mules around the world,” she said. “I love raising money knowing it will change their lives for the better.”

Other runners from the equestrian world include Josh Moore, who recovered from life-threatening illness last year, and his sister, racing broadcaster Hayley Moore, who are running for Cancer Research UK. Photographer Henry Kinchin is running for the Riding for the Disabled Association, Racing Welfare has 12 runners hitting the streets, while amateur event riders Tara Keoshgerian and Lucy Cocker are respectively running for the Starlight Children’s Foundation and Newlife, the Charity for Disabled Children.

British event riders Emily King and Sam Ecroyd are swapping four legs for two to take on the TCS London Marathon this spring.

The pair are joined by head girl Sarah Morrilly, and all three are raising money for the Brain & Spine Foundation, which supports people affected by neurological problems.

“It’s something that Sam and I have wanted to do for a while – we’ve been talking about it for years and years,” Emily told H&H.

Olympic medallist Mary King, Emily’s mum, ran the London Marathon in 2021, which gave Emily the nudge to take the plunge for 2023.

“We were in the lorry, we do a lot of travelling all together, and I said ‘Let’s just do it and put our names down’. Then we were all accepted and thought, ‘Oh right, so this is happening!’” she said.

Emily added that she and Sam “are quite competitive”, so preparing for the marathon together has helped keep them motivated.

“We started training quite early over the winter, just so it wasn’t such a big shock when it came to the miles clocking up,” she said.

“We’re preparing for the eventing season, so we’ve been getting fit as the horses have been getting fit.”

All three are runners, and Sarah has done the Chester Half before, but this will be their biggest challenge yet.

One of Emily’s old school friends used to work for the charity, so Emily knew about the work it does and wanted “to give something back”.

She said the work the charity does is also a major motivating factor. Sam had a cross-country accident last year and sustained a bleed on the brain. Although he did not need the charity’s services, they were aware the support was available should he require it.

“The Brain & Spine Foundation is a fantastic charity. In our sport, injuries are scarily common. We thought it would be a very fitting charity to run for and to give something back to them. They aren’t thanked enough and are just incredible,” said Emily.

Tom McEwen, Jonty Evans and Olli Fletcher are among the elite riders swapping boots for trainers on Sunday as they take on the TCS London Marathon (2 October).

It’s a rapid turn-around for Tokyo Olympic eventing team gold and individual silver medallist Tom, who has two young horses in the three-day classes at Osberton this week before hot-footing it to the capital for the London Marathon tomorrow (Sunday).

The five-star winner has been spotted marathon training at major internationals this year, and is running the 26.2 miles to raise money for Alzheimer’s Research UK in support of his granny.

Multiple youth medal-winning showjumper Olli Fletcher is running this year’s marathon for World Horse Welfare.

Olli, 19, joins seven other runners supporting World Horse Welfare this year and he is close to achieving his £3,000 target.

Irish Olympic event rider Jonty Evans is running alongside his friend, Michael Knighty, and Hartpury’s associate professor and equine therapy centre manager Dr Kathryn Nankervis.

Jonty sustained a traumatic brain injury in a fall at Tattersalls in 2018 and the trio are running for Headway, a UK-wide brain injury support charity.

Running has formed part of Jonty’s recovery and he has been assisted by the Hartpury Sports Academy.

Presenter Rosie Tapner is taking on the marathon for Wellbeing of Women, a charity that focuses on women’s health and wellbeing through research and education.

Rosie, who the eventing fans will recognise for her appearances on Burghley TV among other presenting work in the horse world, has already raised more than £3,200 for the charity.

A former eventer who completed Badminton 52 years ago and survived horrific injuries in a 2016 fall is to run her second London Marathon this weekend at the age of 71.

Shena Kozuba-Kozubska, who said she does “not do running”, is taking on the challenge on Sunday (3 October) 30 years after her last marathon, which raised £6,000 for the Mark Davies Injured Riders Fund.

She told H&H she supported the charity as it had supported her after a bad fall at West Wilts.

“Afterwards, I said ‘never again’, but here I am!” she said.

“I had no idea how fast I should go; I did say I wouldn’t let a horse go across country unless it had done the time it had to do, so about three weeks beforehand, I ran the 26 miles, but then I had to go to Jersey to teach and couldn’t run there as it’s so narrow. So I did no training for the last two weeks but I managed. I finished in four hours, and was rather pleased with that.”

Shena, who completed Badminton aged 18 in 1969 on Lord and Lady Hugh Russell’s Irish-bred eight-year-old mare Flamingo, said she “wrote to everyone to sponsor me” for that first run.

“I remember John Oaksey and Brough Scott; one said ‘For God’s sake, make sure you train enough’, and the other said ‘For God’s sake, don’t over-train’, which I thought was marvellous,” she said.

“I did think ‘Never again’, because it was ridiculous. I went to my sister’s afterwards and had a lovely Famous Grouse and American ginger, then the next day I had to move 200 bales of hay. As you do.”

Shena went back to riding and teaching, and five years ago, had a horse in to train.

“I knew he’d been somewhere a bit dreadful to be sold and they couldn’t sell him, so I said ‘Bring him here, he’ll be fine’,” she said. “I rode him down the village and the last thing I remember is letting a car go past. A month later, I woke up in intensive care.”

Shena still does not know what caused the fall, in which she fractured her back, crushed ribs into her left lung, broke her breastbone, shoulder and wrist. She also now only has one functioning kidney as a result.

“It was a bit disastrous really,” she said. “The whole of my left side was crushed, from back to front, and I’ve got one kidney that’s just sitting there, as dead as a dodo.

“I don’t ride any more, I couldn’t put my family through it as that was terrible for them, and as I am, I wouldn’t be able to ride; I hope I used to ride well but I couldn’t like that now.

“I’m pretty smashed up, so then you’ll ask why I’m doing the marathon!”

Shena explained that without the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, she would not have survived the fall.

“As soon as I came out of hospital, I said ‘I’m going to run the London Marathon for you’, and they all laughed,” she said. “I’ve tried for the last three years and kept getting balloted out, because I wanted to run for three charities, rather than just one. Luckily, this year, I got in through the ballot.”

Shena will split her money raised between the air ambulance, which she hopes will also raise awareness of the service’s vital work, especially for riders, Horatio’s Garden, which builds gardens at NHS spinal injury centres, and the Motor Neurone Disease Association, as she lost her sister to the devastating disease a year before her fall.

“I’m very lucky,” she said. “I’m not going to do it in four hours this time, I can tell you that! I’m going to totter, not really run, but the other day I tottered 20 miles in five hours. That was a killer because the stones on the canal were terrible, so I’m actually looking forward to the marathon as surely that will be better!”

Shena said she would be delighted to equal her 1991 £6,000 fundraising total again; she has already raised over £3,000 on her Virgin Money page.

“It’ll probably take me six or seven hours this time,” she said. “I’m in no hurry.”

Determined equestrians are preparing to tackle the London Marathon for equine charities and other good causes.

The 26.2-mile challenge returns in-person on 3 October, following last year’s event being held virtually owing to the pandemic. The virtual marathon will also return, allowing runners from all over the world to take part.

Livery yard owner and coach Rachel Silcock will run in aid of charity Victa, which supports blind children and their families.

Rachel, who turned 50 this year, told H&H it had been “fairly tough” getting the long runs in while running Gamston Wood Livery, as well as teaching at camps over summer.

“Luckily I’m a member of a fab running club, the Worksop Harriers, who have been a massive support as I only took up running a few years ago,” she said.

“Running is a massive benefit for your mental health and gives me a break from the horse world that can be a little intense at times. I come back from each run more enthusiastic for my teaching and my yard. I think horse people tackle long distance running with a quiet determination, you only need a pair of running shoes and have to put one foot in front of the other – it’s so much easier than competing with horses!”

Dressage coach and rider Lili Brooksby-Dalby of Brooksby Dressage, will take on the marathon for Brooke and has raised more than £7,000 to date. Lili asked her social media followers to send videos of themselves performing dressage tests for her to judge, in return for a donation to her marathon fundraising pot.

“People from all over submitted their tests. I’m incredibly fortunate so many of my friends rallied around and donated prizes and sponsored rosettes and trophies. Their kindness has been nothing short of an inspiration to keep pushing the miles as a totally unfit, sport allergic, lazy fitness person prior to this!” said Lilii, adding she will run the marathon alongside her friend Hannah Doyle.

“Hannah has been great for me. She helped me through my first 10k and we have done all our long runs together. I find running with her so much easier than when alone.”

Also running for Brooke is Elissa Bucher, a dressage trainer and owner of Defago and Djoe Dimaggio, who are campaigned by Katie Bailey.

Elissa, who took up running in April, told H&H she nearly had to withdraw from the London Marathon with a suspected stress fracture in her pelvis but received the ok to run last week.

“A pain started around two weeks ago and it turns out I have aductor tendinopathy, which I’ve been told is even more painful than a stress fracture!” she said.

“I’m determined to complete the marathon – if I want to do it, I just have to push through. I’m not in peak condition but I just think about the horses Brooke support and the pain they have gone through – what I’m going to be going through is a miniscule of that.”

World Horse Welfare has a number of runners taking part in the London Marathon this year including Gerard Bedson and vet Katie Offer. Gerard is the husband of the charity’s field officer Becky and has had an “unusual” preparation during the past eight weeks as he trains on a treadmill while working offshore in the North Sea.

Eventing legend Mary King will take on the London Marathon next month as she ticks another item off her “bucket list”.

Mary, who turned 60 in June, will run the 26.2-mile marathon on 3 October in aid of the Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity. Mary is no stranger to taking on new challenges; in 2019 she took part in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.

“Racing across the ocean was really fantastic and hardcore through the roaring seas and after that I thought ‘what else can I do?’. I’ve always loved having challenges to aim for and now that I’m not eventing as much as I used to at the top level and I’m just doing the young horses, I thought ‘I’d love to run a marathon’,” Mary told H&H.

“With lockdown the marathon didn’t happen in 2020 and when the organisers said it was definitely happening in autumn this year I thought ‘right, let’s do it!’ so I started training in April.”

Mary used her knowledge of getting horses fit to help with her own fitness for the marathon.

“Starting from April I’ve run every third day, a bit like you would galloping horses. To start with I couldn’t really run up the road and I wasn’t very good but now I can keep on going,” she said.

“I haven’t followed a particular running programme but I suppose having got the horses fit many times, I’ve just done my own thing and used common sense. You gradually push yourself more and more, and this last month leading up to the marathon I’ve done a couple of longer runs.”

Mary said she is not aiming for an “ultra-fast time”.

“I just want to get the job done. I will be running with my former head girl Annie Corbin, who was with me for 11 years during my days with King William and Star Appeal,” she said.

“Running makes you feel great. Healthwise it keeps you fit and strong and you can eat lots! It’s a bit like galloping across country, when you finish, it feels really good. You get a real buzz from it.”

Mary said the London Marathon is likely to be her first and last marathon, but next on her bucket list is to finish sailing around the world.

“I wouldn’t ever do it all in one because it would mean being away too long but I’ve sailed across the Atlantic, and I’ve done the Indian and Southern ocean in the race. I just need to do the Pacific and through the Panama Canal, then I will have completed the around the world sail, so that’s my next plan,” she said.

Former event rider Claire Lomas is calling on the equestrian community to support an online charity auction ahead of her second London Marathon.

Claire, who was paralysed from the chest down in a cross-country fall at Osberton Horse Trials in 2007, will take on the London Marathon on 3 October pushing herself in her wheelchair while wearing full motorcycle leathers, boots and a helmet. In 2012 she completed the marathon over 16 days while wearing a bionic suit.

Claire is raising funds for disabled children’s charity Whizz-Kidz and aims to complete the 26.2 miles in one day. She had been due to take part last year but the event was cancelled owing to the pandemic.

“I was given a guaranteed place in the 2020 marathon through the London Marathon Spirit of London Award which gives 20 places to those with different stories to tell. I know how difficult it can be to get a place so I knew I couldn’t turn it down,” she told H&H.

“It’s going to be tough but I’ll definitely get there. I can get going reasonably well in training but then I put all the gear on and with the helmet it’s so heavy so I don’t know how many hours it’s going to take. I’ve been training up and down my drive which can be quite tedious going back and forth.”

As part of her fundraising for Whizz-Kids Claire will hold an online auction starting the week of the London Marathon until 4 October. Donated lots include a complete showjump with fillers, horse feed, a holiday in Austria, flying lessons, and a cross-country schooling day.

“Already the equestrian community has been so supportive, as it always is, but I’m hoping we can get some more donations. We have five weeks to drum up as many items as possible so we’re looking for some top riders to offer lessons, equestrian gear we can auction or tickets to an event,” said Claire.

“I’m raising money for this brilliant charity that helps children with disabilities and shows them they can live good lives and become confident adults. It also helps get them mobility equipment – lightweight wheelchairs can cost £4000-£5000 and these children deserve the best equipment that makes their life easier. Some children want an Xbox, but for these children they want a lightweight wheelchair.”

As well as Claire’s fundraising efforts, she holds motivational talks and two days before the London Marathon she will return to Osberton for the first time since her accident to speak at a business lunch.

“It’s going to be quite strange. I think it will make me think back to that day and how my life changed, but equally that day has led to a lot of new doors opening to me,” she said.

“I love doing the public speaking. I never would have imagined doing it before my accident, it would have been my worst nightmare. I’m also planning to visit schools to talk to disabled children about abilities; I found since my accident I have more abilities than before – I’m taking part in my second London Marathon, I‘m training to become a pilot and I ride my motorcycle on track days. I think it’s about focusing on what you can do. Hearing from the children and how they have benefited from the charity will be really nice to hear before I’m pushing round the marathon.“

Classic-winning former jockey George Baker is in training to run the London Marathon three years after a horrific fall at St Moritz.

George will be running the 26.2 miles on 26 April in aid of the Injured Jockeys Fund, of which he is a trustee, and Racing Welfare.

Three years ago, George sustained a serious head injury in a life-changing fall while racing at the 2017 White Turf meeting in St Moritz, Switzerland. His injury resulted in an end to the St Leger winning jockey’s race riding career.

“My accident led to many months of recuperation from a brain injury,” said George.

“The IJF swung into action, and the help and support of their rehabilitation teams has allowed me to lead a normal and happy life.

“I was so honoured, therefore, to be invited to become a trustee of the charity last year, as I am a simple testament to what their work achieves in supporting jockeys and their families.”

George is training for the marathon with the help of the IJF team at Oaksey House, using its gym and physio facilities, as well as the specialist Running School, London, which also helped George learn to walk again three years ago.

“I know that tackling a marathon is a challenge for everyone, but as my balance is not what it was, I have had to learn to walk and run again,” George added.

“What will keep me going is the pledge I’ve made to raise funds for both the Injured Jockeys Fund and Racing Welfare.

“My life in racing has given me first-hand insight into the amazing work both charities do to support their beneficiaries working across the sport, and not just in the saddle.”

George’s total has already topped £2,500 — including gift aid takes it to more than £3,000.

“Three years ago, George had to learn to walk again,” said IFJ president Sir AP McCoy.

“And now he’s going to run the London marathon, one of the toughest things you can ever do. He says himself that it might not be pretty, but to me it’s totally remarkable and I admire him so much for even attempting it.”

Dressage rider Alice Oppenheimer will be among the runners taking on the London Marathon in aid of equine charity Brooke.

Alice is already a committed supporter of the charity, which helps working horses and donkeys around the world, recently visiting them in India alongside global ambassador Charlotte Dujardin.

She has also backed their recent fundraising campaigns MyHackathon and Every Horse Remembered but said she was “really excited” to take on the “huge challenge” of running the 26-mile route next April.

“I was lucky enough to visit Brooke’s work in India in 2015 and I saw the difference that donations can make. As someone who is new to running, I know training will be hard but I’ll be thinking of the amazing animals and people I met on that trip and how this challenge will benefit them and many others around the world,” she said.

Alice will also be hosting an exclusive event at her yard in February, where all Brooke’s London Marathon runners can meet her and enjoy a tour. The event will include tips on nutrition, training and fundraising.

Emily Smith, who works as a rider at Redwings Horse Sanctuary helping to back and retrain abused and abandoned horses, is among the other runners taking part.

The 22-year-old said she wanted to support the charity because of the importance of its work.

“Brooke works with owners, vets and farriers of working equines abroad. Unfortunately, due to lack of education, some owners don’t know how to look after their horses or donkeys correctly, therefore the animal falls ill and they cannot make a living for their families to survive.

“Brooke works to educate the owners on basic welfare care and needs, and works with the vets and farriers to help the owners,” she said.

“Events like this are vital in raising funds to help Brooke reach working horses, donkeys and mules across the globe. Runners and riders from across the country are preparing to tackle the London Marathon for equine charities and a range of other good causes.

A world record 414,168 people applied for places in this year’s 26.2-mile challenge, on 28 April, with more than 40,000 expected to take part.

World Horse Welfare has five runners raising funds in its name.

Vet Anna Hammond from Bristol University veterinary school, who works at the charity’s Glenda Spooner farm, told H&H it will “mean a lot” to support it.

“I’ve got to know how the charity works and operates and I think it’s a fabulous organisation – I’ve been very impressed with the way it run things, the ethos and the strict moral values it applies to everything it does. I think World Horse Welfare does a splendid job,” she said.

Phil Newton, who ran for the charity last year, said he is “thirsty for more” after raising £2047 in 2018.

“I was a few minutes outside my target of a sub four-hour marathon last year and am determined to reach that goal this year. My wife, Vicki, works in the international department of the charity and we have rehomed a World Horse Welfare horse, Rana, who is very much for of the family,” said Phil.

Lottie Hing and Ruth Ellison are also running for the charity, along with World Horse Welfare design officer Matt Green.

A team of seven are raising funds for the Donkey Sanctuary.

Yvonne Moore, a 64-year-old “dedicated fundraiser” from Rochford missed out running for the sanctuary in 2018 and is “really excited” about taking part this year.

Andrea Barrett, a “loyal” supporter, was introduced to the sanctuary when she was very young when her grandmother adopted a donkey called Winston.

Shelley Hall and her partner Ashley Lloyd, Gavin Paye, Tanya Potiyenko and George Paraschou will also be part of the Donkey Sanctuary team.

Raising funds for Hannah’s Willberry Wonder Pony is secondary school biology teacher and Pony Club coach Jenny Norman, who has been riding for more than 30 years.

Jenny told H&H: “Last year a pupil in my form at school lost her fight with cancer at the age of 15. She suffered from a form of osteosarcoma, very similar to Hannah Francis. This led to me becoming involved with the charity and I have been raising money ever since by completing runs and sponsored rides.”

Jenny will also raise funds for the Jess Grant Celebration charity, set up by Jenny’s students’ parents and Queen guitarist Brian May in Jess’s memory to support young people who are ill by funding music lessons.

Eleanor Martin and Rachel Hatcher are running for international equine charity Brooke.

Eleanor’s “passion” for equine welfare took her to India in 2017 where she helped develop a retraining of racehorses programme.

“I witnessed first-hand how different things are in the poorer countries and while these thoroughbreds were not subject to the conditions of those in Egypt or Jordan, the boys caring for them still had to learn about horse welfare, management and training methods,” said Eleanor.

The Royal Veterinary College has a team of eight runners raising funds to support the college’s animal hospitals including the equine practice and referral hospital.

Kyle McCreesh, Oliver Siddons, Sophie Tilyard, Eloise Nice, Paul Berrington, Leanne Smith, Kirsty Bendon and Hannah Lacey will run.

Georgie Dickinson, who is behind the marketing and sponsorship for Bede events, including Osborne House and Osberton Horse Trials, is raising funds for baby charity Tommy’s.

Georgie, who has evented to intermediate level, told H&H it’s been tough fitting in training alongside her work commitments.

“Around the events I’ve been struggling to get the training in before and after work but because I’ve got the goal it’s kept me going. Everyone in the office have been incredibly supportive and really helped me along,” she said.

Lucy Cocker, a human physiotherapist, is raising money for Life Charity who fund equipment for disabled and terminally ill children.

Lucy, who events with her ex-racehorse General Samarski, told H&H: “I have brought him on from never jumping, up to BE novice level – he is not the easiest of horses but he has so much talent. I wanted to run the London marathon as a new challenge but I am really missing the start of the eventing season.”

A former three-star event rider is raising funds for the charity that helped her after a crashing fall.

Yorkshire-based Natasha Al-Egaily was injured when her horse reared and fell on top of her while schooling at home.

“There was no one around at the time so I rang emergency services,” she told H&H. “The next thing I knew there was an air ambulance and a paramedic in a car.

“Fortunately I was able to be assessed by the paramedic so the air ambulance wasn’t needed.”

Natasha escaped serious injury, but broke several ribs and suffered bruising to her hips.

“I was very lucky really,” she said.

Natasha made a full recovery and was able to return to the saddle, but has since shelved her ridden career to focus on a new job in mental health.

She has wanted to give something back to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance since her fall and decided that running London Marathon would be the perfect way to show her appreciation for the charity.

“I only recently realised they were self-funded,” she said. “I was one of the lucky ones but I’ve seen the air ambulance out working at events — so many people do need it and it’s life or death.”

This will be Natasha’s first marathon, although she has previously completed an Iron Man race, which includes a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile run.

“With Iron Man I was just trying to complete the run, this time I want to do it in under four hours,” she said, adding that the bad weather so far this year has made training “a struggle”.

Natasha has been fitting her training round her job and caring for her daughter, Zivah.

“I got into the marathon last year by ballot, but I was eight months’ pregnant by the time it came round,” she said.

“I have a special running pram and I take my daughter with me on the shorter runs.”

Riders from up and down the country will be swapping boots and breeches for shorts and trainers as they tackle the London Marathon for horsey charities and good causes.

This year’s 26.2-mile challenge takes place on 22 April and more than 40,000 runners will be taking part.

Welfare charity Brooke has two runners taking part to raise funds in its name.

Sixty-year-old horse lover Mike Rowe from Hungerford is running his first marathon for Brooke to mark his recent landmark birthday.

Mike has supported Brooke for over 10 years and decided to sign up after a sightseeing trip to Buckingham Palace.

“It was the day before the London Marathon, with all the flags flying along The Mall I could really feel a sense of excitement and anticipation in the air… and that was it, that was when I decided ‘that’s what I want to do to celebrate turning 60’,” he said.

Top showjumper Scott Brash’s agent Joel Birks (pictured above) is also running for Brooke.

Fellow international equine charity SPANA will be supported by its trustee, Rob Gethen Smith (pictured above).

Rob visited Ethiopia earlier this month to see SPANA’s work in person, and did some training runs while he was there.

“I had the privilege to see first-hand the work that SPANA does and the impact it has,” he said. “I can really see how far our supporters’ money goes to directly improve the welfare of working animals through veterinary treatment but also through educating owners and children how to care for and respect their animals on which they ultimately rely.”

Horse & Hound’s 2017 charity of the year, World Horse Welfare, has several runners taking part in its honour.

Brett Backstrom, Kate Burn, Phil Newton (pictured below), Susan Skea, and Brian Warden are running for World Horse Welfare.

Becky Statham, World Horse Walfare’s senior communications officer, has also signed up.

“London Marathon has always been on my bucket list and this was the perfect opportunity to tick it off as well as raising funds for a cause close to my heart both personally and professionally,” said Becky.

Worldwide runners

Seven individuals, from as far afield as Bermuda, are raising funds for the Donkey Sanctuary.

Bermuda-based Claire de ste Croix will be teaming up with her brother James Tomkinson from Cornwall to take part in the event.

Claire was caught up in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings and had just finished the race when the bombs were detonated.

The Donkey Sanctuary was the obvious choice for the pair. The charity is very close to their hearts as it came to their aid many years ago when two of their own rescued donkeys became unwell.

Kimmarie Smith, Lesley Walker, Stuart Hurcomb, Victoria Lack and George Paraschou will also be part of the Donkey Sanctuary team.

Amateur jockey Lucy Wheeler is no stranger to race days and will be taking part in London Marathon for Racing Welfare.

“This year I’m not race-riding so I’ve chosen to swap my saddle for my trainers!” she told H&H.

Emma Murray is running for the Willberry Wonder Pony Charity and will be joined by mascot “Raceberry”.

“Sadly, in 2014 my Dad died after a short battle with cancer,” the amateur eventer told H&H. “So I think any fundraising to help #kickcancersbutt. It is so worthwhile although I have never done any fundraising before.”

The Countryside Alliance Foundation has five runners this year, including eventers Katie Bleekman and Ella McEwen.

The foundation runs three main initiatives; Casting for Recovery — supporting women who have had, or have breast cancer — and Fishing for Schools and Falconry for Schools – helping children, who are often struggling, to re-engage with education and build their confidence and self-esteem.

Remarkable comebacks

Phillipa Lord (pictured above and below) had a serious riding accident in 2015 when she broke three vertebrae.

“I was originally told I wouldn’t walk again, but there was a spinal surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth hospital who thought he might be able to fix me, and he did!” she told H&H.

“I am now, just over two years later, running the London Marathon in aid of Spinal Research. I really want to help those who weren’t as lucky as me to get this second chance.”

Event rider and trainer Rae Gatland-Hanlon will also be running for Spinal Research.

“It all happened a bit by accident, one of my clients ran it for a young family member who had had a spinal stroke,” he said. “In November she messaged me to say she had another space and would I be willing to give it a go and seeing as spinal injuries are all to common for riders.

“I have had a few friends who have suffered spinal injuries so it seemed like I couldn’t say no!”

Trainer and dressage rider Justine Sole will be running the marathon for the Lymphoma Association.

Her mother was diagnosed with a brain tumour due to lymphoma three years ago, but has since recovered.

In May last year Justine broke her back in a fall.

“In October I was contacted by the Lymphoma Association to be told I had a place in the marathon,” she told H&H. “At this stage I could just about walk but decided to except the challenge.

“I knew it would be hard but also a really good goal to get me back in track. It has done exactly that and I know I would not be where I am today without this goal.”

Fellow dressage rider Olivia Oakeley is taking part in aid of the Meningitis Research Foundation.

“My grandad was an Olympic yachtsman and my ambition is to compete at the top level as a senior rider so he’s always been a huge inspiration in my life,” she told H&H.

“He passed away to septicaemia in December 2016 and my dad survived bacterial meningitis when he was young so it’s a charity I felt had helped my family.”

Horse and dog lover Justin White will be raising funds for the Greyhound Trust.

“The charity only got one place so I will be running solo for the trust,” he told H&H. “I have osteoporosis now so this is not just an ordinary challenge.”

A vital service

Rider and student Esther Anderson is tackling her first marathon for St John Ambulance

“Both on the equestrian and marathon running circuit St John’s are an integral volunteer-led team,” she said.

Louisa Stokes (pictured above) wanted to give something back to Meningitis Now.

“I have several friends who have lost family members or had their lives severely affected by this awful disease,” she said.

“I’m determined to do my bit to raise as much money as I can and raise awareness to help people that may be unfortunate enough to be affected by it in the future.

“ I’m very lucky to have had the fantastic support of the Berkeley Hunt in my fundraising and awareness campaign.”

Amateur eventer Jaide Hartridge has chosen to run for the Mental Health Foundation.

“In April last year a very close friend of mine took his life,” she said. “None of his close friends or his family were aware he was suffering any mental health issues so it was a total shock, but the Mental Health Foundation do some really great work in raising awareness of mental health and helping to reduce (and hopefully eventually eliminate completely) the stigma associated with mental health issues.”

Runners are hoping to raise thousands for equestrian causes as the London Marathon edges closer.

With just six weeks to go until the big day (23 April), runners are entering their final stretch of training.

H&H news writer and digital sub-editor Rachael Turner (pictured, top) will be among those pounding the capital’s pavements as she takes on the 26.2-mile route in aid of World Horse Welfare — which is also H&H’s charity of the year.

“I write many news stories about the charity’s often harrowing welfare cases and campaigning work, so it’s a cause close to my heart,” said Rachael.

“World Horse Welfare works tirelessly to help these animals and it’s charity I’m proud to be able to run for.

“Any funds, however big or small will help make a difference. Thank you so much for your support.”

Freddie Allen (pictured, below) is running the marathon for Brooke in memory of his mother, eventer Jo Lomas, who passed away in 2012 following an accident turning her horses out.

This will be the first marathon he has run for charity and he said that Brooke was his “first and only choice”.

Donations on his JustGiving page have already topped £2,000.

Also fundraising for Brooke are vets Carolyne Crowe and Brian Faulkner, who are taking on 10 marathons in 10 days.

They will be running in extreme locations across the British Isles, finishing with the London Marathon on 23 April, and hope to raise £10,000.

The pair start their 260-mile journey in Wahilgoe, Northern Scotland, and will take on punishing terrains including Land’s End and Galway.

“I will be 40 in 2017 and I wanted a big challenge; this seemed as good as any,” said Carolyne.

“I also believe in creating stories to tell my grandchildren and I’m sure a few good ones will come from this adventure.”

Running for the Animal Health Trust is Anysia Huggins.

This will be the first marathon for Anysia, who is hoping to raise £2,000.

The 24-year-old overcame a serious leg injury seven years ago to learn to walk, ride and eventually run again.

A fall during a gridwork lesson left her with a shattered femur. She was rushed to hospital and spent four hours in theatre having emergency surgery, where she needed blood transfusions and pins and rods were inserted into her leg.

Anysia said she is feeling “very nervous”, but is looking forward to the celebratory glass of fizz at the finish line.

Eventers, vets, beaglers and jockeys are taking part in the 2015 Virgin Money London Marathon later this month (26 April) to raise funds for charity.

Triple Badminton winner Ian Stark, 61, is taking part in his third London Marathon to raise money for Sparks, the children’s medical research charity. Sponsor him here

In 2013 he completed the 26 miles in 4hr52min, knocking 11min off the time he clocked 10 years earlier.

Professor Stuart Reid is running the London Marathon in aid of the RVC Animal Care Trust, the Veterinary Benevolent Fund (VBF) and Mind.

Professor Reid said in his role as president of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) and principal of the Royal Veterinary College he “would like to take every opportunity to help break down the stigma associated with mental health and wellbeing.”

“Most of all, I am doing it for the nine people I know personally who are no longer with us, and the many more who have found, and will find, help in time,” he added.

There are 14 runners in this year’s Racing Welfare London Marathon team including racehorse trainer Paul D’Arcy; horse transporter Bryan Elliott; equine physio Wendely Wesselink; Rod Street, chief executive of Great British Racing; Amelia Williams, stable manager at Market Rasen racecourse and apprentice jockey Paul Booth.

Each had to raise a minimum of £1,500 to take part. All the funds raised will help Racing Welfare support the industry’s stud stable staff. More information here

Racing Welfare won an award for the highest amount raised in the London Marathon last year after Pearl Bloodstock founder Sheikh Fahad took part with his racehorse trainers helping the team raise over £200k.

This year’s Countryside Alliance marathon runners include Charles Jardine, the 62 year-old director of the CA’s Fishing4Schools project; Sophie Moate, 29, a keen beagler who works in corporate PR in London and Holly Bourne-Arton, 20, a student who hunts with the Bedale.

“At the age of 62, to contemplate a marathon is an act of clinical insanity by Fishing4Schools and the Countryside Alliance Foundation are such amazing causes I could not pass up the chance,” said Charles Jardine.

The Animal Health Trust (AHT) has six marathon runners including ophthalmology vet Ben Blacklock and horse owner Rebecca Mackie.

Ben Blacklock, 30, is an ophthalmologist and has worked for the AHT since 2011. He is running the marathon with Oriol Obradors Barat, an equine vet at Isle Veterinary Group. Together they want to raise more than £3,000 for the AHT.

Ben said: “I have witnessed first-hand all of the great work that the charity does. It’s been really challenging to find time to train, especially as I am running with a friend who is also a vet, but the AHT is a cause we both feel very strongly about.”

This Sunday (13 April) brave runners from the equestrian world will be tackling the Virgin Money London Marathon for worthy causes.

These include the Qatar Racing team (pictured above) — some of which were unlikely contenders for a 26-mile run.

The team includes Qatar Racing’s Sheikh Fahad and his adviser, and Ledbury master David Redvers.

David is a marathon regular, however some of the others are not.

“I’m doing it, but on a lot of painkillers,” said Sheikh Fahad. “Every specialist in the world has told me running is not for me, but for Racing Welfare I’m prepared to give it a try.”

Trainer Richard Hannon, also not known for his running prowess, added: “My preparation has included running the Silverstone half.

“In the final mile I was overtaken by Daffy Duck, complete with webbed feet, and the Wolverhampton 2-man bobsleigh team — carrying a bobsleigh. If I finish in 7hr I’ll be happy.”

Others taking part include 7 running for the Countryside Alliance Foundation, World Horse Welfare’s deputy chief executive Tony Tyler and a “Colin” the fibreglass horse, who will be carried the 26.2 miles by 4 runners for the Chichester Poppy Appeal.

Horse charities are set to benefit from this year’s Virgin London Marathon (13 April), with several runners representing them.

7 hunt supporters have swapped their long boots for trainers in support of The Countryside Alliance Foundation (TCAF), ranging from a schoolgirl to a duo from the Portman hunt.

Countryside Alliance executive chairman Barney White-Spunner said: “Our team comes from a variety of backgrounds, but they are united in their love of the countryside and passion for hunting.

56-year-old Sharon Baldwin — secretary to national hunt trainer Fergal O’Brien — is running in her first marathon and hopes to finish in less than 3hr45min. She has ridden in point-to-points and has completed several half-marathons.

“The countryside is, and always has been, very close to my heart,” said Sharon.

Portman joint-master Charlie Gundry and kennel-huntsman Thomas Baker are also both running in their first marathons, although former serviceman Thomas is expecting to make a decent time of less than 3hr30min. They are hoping to raise £10,000 for TCAF.

World Horse Welfare’s deputy chief executive Tony Tyler and international programme officer Alana Chapman will represent their charity (pictured).

This will be Tony’s 5^th “and final” London marathon, while it is Alana’s first attempt.

“Alana made the mistake of telling me she was keen to do one too,” said Tony. “We’ve set a target of £2,000 between us, and also have 5 runners through World Horse Welfare places as well as others in the ballot fund-raising for the charity.”

The Animal Health Trust is also represented, with 3 runners for the charity. 2 ladies — Julia Baldwin and Helen Cain — have been putting on Parelli lectures around East Anglia as part of their fund-raising efforts. They have so far totted up more than £7,000.

And 8 top names from racing are raising money for Racing Welfare, including Classic-winning trainers Andrew Balding and Richard Hannon.

Qatar Racing’s Sheikh Fahad Al Thani has set up the team, and will run himself, joined by his racing and bloodstock manager David Redvers, who is also master of the Ledbury. Qatar Racing trainers Robert Cowell, Charlie Hills, David Simmock and Olly Stevens complete the team.

“The idea to field a team in the marathon raising money for Racing Welfare was entirely Sheikh Fahad’s,” said Mr Redvers. “Although I have to admit I was not 100% convinced at the outset that he was serious about running himself.”

And equestrian figure of a different kind will be lining up at the start — a fibreglass horse. “Colin the horse” will be carried the 26.2 miles by 4 runners on behalf of the Chichester Poppy Appeal.

The horse has already raised nearly £40,000 for numerous charities since 2006.

The quartet expects to take 7hrs to complete the race.

Triple Badminton winner, cross-country course-designer and grandfather, Ian Stark, ticked another box on his sporting CV when he completed last weekend’s London Marathon in 4hr52 min, knocking 11min off the time he clocked 10 years ago.

“I had hoped for a slightly faster time, but I got rather carried along with the crowd,” the 59-year-old told H&H.

“The atmosphere in London was incredible and the charity I was running for, Sparks, provided me with a massage at the end — and I’ve had another one since — so I’m feeling pretty good, actually.”

Ian has so far raised £2,150 for the charity.

Among the finishers were many stalwarts of the equestrian world and those fundraising for equine causes, but the performance of the day has to go to former H&H racing blogger National Hunt trainer Tom Symonds. Tom recorded a sensational time of 2hr38min, which left him in 138th place overall.

“I used to be a county runner and have always run to keep fit and take time out from the horses,” he said. “I wanted to beat the crush and I was aiming for a sub-2hr45min time, but I surprised even myself with my time.”

Tom has so far raised more than £3,000 for Prince Harry’s African charity, Sentebale.

Swedish event rider Anna Hilton completed the race in 4hr 20min, while showing judge Sarah Gwilliam finished in 4hr5min.

Among the thousands of runners taking to the streets of the capital for the Virgin London Marathon this weekend (Sunday 21 April) will be stalwarts of the equestrian world and those fundraising for equine causes. They all need your support.

Triple Badminton champion-turned-cross-country course designer Ian Stark, 59, is running for the charity Sparks. He is aiming to beat the time he recorded last time he tackled a marathon, 10 years ago.

“I did it in 5hr 3min then, but I had to walk the last two or three miles due to a knee problem. I said I’d never do it again, but I thought I was getting older and fatter and I needed to get fit, so I started running again and quite enjoyed it,” he said.

This will be a first marathon attempt for Swedish eventer Anna Hilton , 50. She is raising money for the children’s charity Barnardo’s. “I’ve never done anything like it before, so it’s quite nerve-racking,” she admitted.

Showing judge Sarah Gwilliam is running in aid of Kidney Research, raising money in memory of her grandmother who died at Christmas of kidney failure. Sarah has competed at Horse of the Year Show and the Royal International as well as being a British Show Horse Association ride panel judge.

Five runners will be fundraising for the Countryside Alliance — Charlie Warner, William Smyth-Osbourne, Megan Waller, Rollo Patrick and David Fitch-Peyton.

Rollo, who manages the 151 Club on the King’s Road in Chelsea, claims not to have done any exercise for 10 years before agreeing to run the Marathon last December.

David, a thoroughbred stud farm manager and drummer with the folk/rock band Billy in the Lowground, ran the race for the Alliance in 2004. The 49-year-old hopes to beat his previous time of 3hrs 13min this time out.

Seven runners are setting out to raise funds for the Animal Health Trust — Ian Marshall, Trish Callan, Raphael Silver, William Robinson, David Jenkins, Valerie Billings and Beverly Sowerby.

Four runners will be raising money for World Horse Welfare (WHW) — John Bordiss, Louise Chapman, Sarah Thompson and Tracey Smedley.

The racing industry has a strong representation this year, with 11 runners sweating out for Racing Welfare including Phil White, general manager for Kempton Park racecourse, jockey Garry Haynes and Gordon Allen, head lad for (formerly) Barry and (currently) Charlie Hills.

Open team chase rider Andrew Shipley will be raising money for the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance. He is running in memory of his former Lycetts; A Class Act team-mate Jo Rugman, who died on 6 March 2011 following a rotational fall at the VWH team chase.

Nic Van Gelder, a special constable for Haringey in North London, will be donning a giant donkey costume to raise money for international working animal charity SPANA (the Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad).

Paralysed eventer Claire Lomas has raised more than four times her initial fundraising target for running the London Marathon in a robotic suit.

Claire – who is paralysed from the waist down following an accident at Osberton in 2007 – revealed today that she has raised almost £203,000 for Spinal Research.

“Wow – thank you everyone who donated or supported in any way,” she tweeted.

Claire completed the marathon on 8 May, 16 days after she set off.

The mother of one now plans to cycle from London to Paris using a bike powered by her legs and arms next spring.

Sixteen days after she set off on her London Marathon challenge, Claire Lomas has crossed the finish line in The Mall – in front of thousands of supporters, TV cameras and a host of celebrity well-wishers.

Claire, 32, completed the 26.2 miles in a pair of special robotic legs, to raise money for Spinal Research.

She was a promising event rider when she was paralysed in a fall at Osberton Horse Trials five years ago.

“It’s amazing to actually want to sit down, after hating my chair for five years,” Claire told H&H after crossing the finish line.

Claire, supported by husband Dan (pictured), wept with the emotion of completing her challenge.

“I don’t know how I’ve lasted this long [without crying],” she told H&H.

Her husband, mother Joyce and one-year-old daughter, Maisie have accompanied her along the route, averaging about two miles each day.

“I wasn’t expecting all this,” she added, looking round at the bank of photographers and TV and radio reporters queuing up to interview her. Three members of the Household Cavalry acted as outriders, following Claire up The Mall.

“When I saw all the people and taxis at Westminster this morning [where she started her final day’s walk], I thought, ‘it’s a busy day in London’.

“Then I thought – ‘they can’t all be for me?’

“It’s lucky I didn’t know how many people would be here, or I wouldn’t have got any sleep last night,” she added.

As Claire stepped over the finishing line, runners stepped forward to hang their official Virgin London Marathon medals around her neck.

Medals are only awarded to people who complete the marathon within 24 hours. But Virgin has said it will award Claire a special trophy, in recognition of her bravery.

Olympic rower Matthew Pinsent – who has led the calls for Claire to receive official recognition – arrived with a box of “twelve to thirteen medals, all donated by runners.”

He told H&H it wasn’t fair to “bash” the organisers of the marathon.

“No marathon in the world would give her an official medal,” he said.

“But clearly people who’ve run the marathon feel differently.”

Many of the celebrities who have joined Claire during her walk were there to cheer her on, including adventurer Ben Fogle and TV presenter Dan Lobb.

Presenter Clare Balding described Claire’s marathon as “amazing”. She tweeted: “Not a dry eye on The Mall.”

Also there were six-times Badminton winner, Lucinda Green and fellow eventers Francis Whittington, Aoife Clark, Polly Stockton and Kate Lukas.

Claire will now hand back her robotic suit, but is due to take delivery of her own in September, thanks to the fundraising efforts of other riders and the Matt Hampson Foundation.

Virgin boss Sir Richard Branson has bowed to public pressure and announced that Claire Lomas will receive a special trophy for completing the London Marathon.

Claire, 32, is due to complete her “crazy challenge” – completing the London Marathon in a special robotic suit – on Tuesday, 8 May.

She is walking in aid of Spinal Research, and passed her target of raising £50,000 earlier this week. Her Just Giving page currently stands at just over £74,000.

But because Claire will have missed the 24-hour cut-off for finishing the marathon, she will not receive an official medal.

Supporters – including Olympic rower, Sir Matthew Pinsent – have called for an exception to be made.

Sir Matthew, who walked with Claire last week tweeted: “I would really like to think that someone who ran this year’s VLM would feel happy to give their medal to Claire Lomas.”

Dozens of runners plan to meet Claire at the finish line next week, to give her their medals.

Earlier today, Sir Richard Branson announced that he would present Claire with the Virgin Trophy for 2012.

He said: “We treasure amazing acts of bravery, especially ones that raise money for charity – and Claire’s marathon is certainly that.

“We launched the trophy to recognise men and women who go that extra mile, who challenge themselves beyond normal human limitations.

“We would be honoured to present Claire with the Virgin Trophy for 2012,” he added.

The past two recipients of the trophy are John Isner, the player who won the longest tennis match in the history of Wimbledon, and The Seagulls, an all-women crew who rowed unaided around Britain.

Claire Lomas has hit her £50,000 fundraising target after 10 days of walking the London marathon course.

The eventer, who is paralysed from the waist down following an accident at Osberton in 2007, has walked around 15 miles of the 26-mile route in a robotic suit.

She passed the half-way mark – Tower Bridge – yesterday.

She will be passing through London’s Docklands today, with visits from ITV Daybreak presenter Dan Lobb and Lucinda Green.

And future celebrity visitors include Dave Vitty of the Radio 1 Breakfast Show, BBC newsreaders Sophie Rayworth and Susannah Reid, Ben Fogle and Channel 4 racing commentator Alice Plunkett.

Claire hopes to cross the finishing post in the Mall next Tuesday (8 May) and so far sponsors have pledged more than £52,000 to Spinal Research through her fundraising efforts.

However when she finishes the marathon Claire will not be getting a medal and that’s annoyed many H&H readers, who flooded the Virgin London Marathon twitter account with requests for an exception to made.

The rules of the marathon were changed this year to read that anyone who takes more than 24 hours to compete the Marathon is not recognised.

Former GB rower Sir Matt Pinsent, who walked with Claire last week tweeted: “I would really like to think that someone who ran this years VLM would feel happy to give their medal to Claire Lomas.”

And Andy Fountain tweeted: “Can’t believe that @LondonMarathon won’t give @claire80lomas a finishers medal. If they don’t relent I will happily give her mine!!”

It was wet, very, very wet – but Claire Lomas (pictured right of pic) was still smiling and continued to do so all day, despite obviously being extremely weary.

H&H newswriter Amy Mathieson and I joined the paralysed eventer yesterday, on day four of her efforts to walk the London Marathon in a robotic suit.

It was probably the wettest day London has seen for five years.

And as we made our way to the reconditioned Cutty Sark in Greenwich, south east London the rain was coming down in buckets.

Earlier in the day Claire had rung to tell us she understood if we’d prefer to come on a drier day – how could we!

So we joined Claire in Nandos, where she was sheltering from the worst of the weather and waiting for BBC presenter Clare Balding, BBC World Service radio and a local BBC TV crew to join her for the next leg of her journey.

Claire is one of just two people in the UK to use the Re-Walk suit – a powered exoskeleton that allows the wearer to walk with crutches.

The Re-Walk is designed by Israeli company Argo Medical Technologies and distributed in the UK and Ireland by Yorkshire-based Cyclone Technologies.

The Cyclone team has supported Claire on her marathon effort – literally, as one of a three-strong team – today Matt – has walked behind Claire, holding onto her hips the whole way.

Also walking with Claire yesterday was eventer Gemma Tattersall (left of top pic).

Gemma told H&H: “I didn’t know Claire personally before, but last year Ruth Mathieson, who was leasing a horse from me, had a fall and seriously injured her spine.

“It brought it home to me how easily it can happen and when I heard Claire was doing this I wanted to support her.”

After four days of walking Claire passed the seven-mile mark in a walk that will take her and her support team of friends, family and staff from the Spinal Research charity more than two weeks to complete.

“It’s really difficult but my technique is improving,” said Claire, “and I hope to walk over the finish line completely unaided.

“I have been amazed by the support I have received so far – it’s been absolutely unbelievable, with people like Clare [Balding] coming along today, Tim Henman, Matt Pinsent and loads more people signed up to come out.”

Clare walked nearly a mile with Claire and declared her “amazing”.

“She never stops smiling,” she said. “Really inspirational!”

As most of the runners who took part in yesterday’s London Marathon take a well-earned rest from their labours, plucky former eventer Claire Lomas is back out on the streets.

Claire, who was paralysed in a cross-country accident at Osberton in 2007, is walking the marathon in a robotic suit.

She completed 2.25miles of the 26-mile course yesterday, and at 10am today was due to pick up from where she left off.

She is likely to be walking for more than two weeks.

This morning she tweeted: “Day 2. Not too sore. Weather looks bad though… still can’t believe yesterday – surreal. Nearly cry every time think about it!”

She was joined for the last stint of the day by Olympic rower Sir Matthew Pinsent – which she said spurred her on.

“What an end to the first day,” she said.

Paralysed eventer Claire Lomas has had a boost to her fundraising efforts with a push on the H&H forum.

Claire has been confined to a wheelchair since being injured in a fall at Osberton Horse Trials in 2007.

But on Sunday she will line up with thousands of sportsmen and women and fundraisers to tackle the London Marathon in aid of Spinal Research.

Claire is one of just two people in the UK being trained to use the Re-Walk suit – a powered exoskeleton that allows the wearer to walk with crutches.

She has been training for the past 12 weeks (see picture) and has progressed to being able to walk two-thirds of a mile in 67 minutes.

So she expects to be on the Marathon course for around three weeks.

But Claire has signed up some celebrity guests to walk with her – including BBC presenter Clare Balding, tennis star Tim Henman, Olympic rower Sir Matthew Pinsett and the Radio 1 Breakfast Show’s “Comedy Dave”.

“I am very grateful to everyone who has signed up to sponsor or walk with me,” said Claire.

“It’s along way but I shall keep on going, with a few breaks as it’s quite hard on my wrists.”

Tackling a marathon is a real undertaking.

But imagine if you have just 12 weeks preparation and also have to re-learn how to walk.

That’s what paralysed former four-star event rider Claire Lomas has in store between now and 22 April, when she will walk the London Marathon in a special robotic suit.

“The training is physically very tiring but mentally exhausting.

“I thought nothing could be as challenging as riding round Burghley five years ago, but this is much harder,” said Claire.

Claire is one of just two people in the UK being trained to use the Re-Walk suit – a powered exoskeleton that allows the wearer to walk with crutches.

And now she’s in a race with her year-old daughter Maisie to see who will be walking first.

“I’m going all out to beat her,” joked Claire. “I’ve had four sessions and managed to put 27 steps together in the last one. I don’t know how many lots of 27 steps there are a marathon…”

Claire thinks it will take her around two weeks to complete the 26-mile course.

She has been confined to a wheelchair since being injured in a fall at Osberton Horse Trials in 2007.

But she is determined to walk again, and although she will undertake the marathon in the training suit, fundraisers have helped her raise the £35,000 to buy the world’s first personal suit – due to be delivered this summer.

The Re-Walk is designed by Israeli company Argo Medical Technologies and distributed in the UK and Ireland by Yorkshire-based Cyclone Technology.

Dave Hawking of Cyclone Technology told H&H: “It’s going to be a huge challenge for Claire.

“I’d rather she had decided to do a 5K, but is anyone is going to complete the marathon in this suit it will be Claire. Her mental attitude is amazing.”

Claire has set herself a target of raising at least £50,000, for Spinal Research with the challenge.

Robin Plowman of the charity said: “It is an incredibly physical challenge for someone with a spinal injury – Claire is a real inspiration.”

Paralysed event rider Claire Lomas is in training for the London Marathon – after taking delivery of a special robotic suit.

The four-star rider, who was injured in a fall at Osberton Horse Trials in 2007, is to walk the 26-mile race in the suit, designed to allow paraplegics to walk.

Top event riders, including Mary King and Mark Todd, posed near naked for a calendar to help raise £35,000 towards the suit.

Thousands of runners will take to the streets of London this weekend (Sunday 17 April), for the 31st Virgin London Marathon.

Many come from an equestrian background or are running for an equine cause and need your support.

The 26.2mile route will take runners around London, starting in Greenwich Park, around Docklands, past Tower Hill and along the Embankment and finishing at St James’s Park.

Andy Stringer veterinary director from the Society for the Protection of Animals Abroad (SPANA) will be undertaking the run wearing an enormous donkey costume, weighing 17kg.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” said Andy. “It’s a great opportunity to raise awareness for an amazing charity. It’s going to be a tough challenge, but I can’t wait to get out on the track and help to raise awareness of SPANA. If anybody is coming along to the marathon, please look out for the donkey and give me a cheer.”

Thousands of runners took to the streets of London last Sunday (25 April) for the Virgin London Marathon and a large number of them came from an equestrian background or were running for an equine cause.

Despite being stuck in Egypt due to the volcanic ash cloud, dressage rider Andrew Gould made it back in time to take part. He completed it in 5hr 20min.

Andrew clocked up an impressive time for the first half of the course, but during the 18th mile an old injury reoccurred and Andrew’s knee ruptured and gave way.

“Having already run most of the way I wasn’t about to give up so close to the end,” said Andrew.

“The St John’s Ambulance people strapped it up for me and I gritted my teeth, tried to put the pain out of my mind and just kept on running.”

Through a demonstration in March and the marathon Andrew has raised more than £3,000 for Spinal Research’s Saddle Up Campaign.

Paul Adams, a sales executive at Lingfield Park racecourse completed the marathon in 5hr 27min and raised around £500 for the Brooke, despite a foot injury.

He said: “Prior to the run, my physio strapped my foot up so I could actually run the race. It was really tough — after running 20 miles my muscles just stopped working and my foot started throbbing so I limped the final 6 miles. I ended up crossing the finishing line with just one shoe on. But all in all it was still so worth it for the Brooke. Next time, (if there is a next time) I’ll know what to expect!”

And Iraq veteran Phil Packer, who lost the use of his legs in an attack in Basra in 2008, walked the marathon in 26 hours — in aid of 26 charities including the Riding for the Disabled Association. He has raised £1,444.

Managing editor Karen Spinner and deputy picture editor Emma McCall will be lining up for the iconic 26.2-mile London Marathon in aid of World Horse Welfare and the Spinal Injuries Association/Tristram Ricketts Appeal respectively.

It is the first time either of the running rookies has taken part in a marathon and both are feeling excited — if a little daunted — by the prospect.

“I’m both looking forward to it and dreading it at the same time,” said Karen.

“The training has been really hard and the schedule has seemed impossible at times, but knowing that I’m running for such a good cause is so inspiring.

“People have been so incredibly generous in their support and I really hope that keeps me going when the fatigue sets in at about mile four!”

And Emma, who is running as part of a 21-strong team, added: “I know on the day there will be sense of huge achievement, but currently I am petrified!

“I’ve had a few setbacks in training but am really looking forward to the atmosphere and the fact I’m running for such a worthy charity, one that is so close to my heart. I’m sure it will motivate me enough to get me through the gruelling 26 miles.

This Sunday (25 April) thousands of brave and hardy runners will take part in the 29th Virgin London Marathon.

Many come from an equestrian background or are running for an equine cause and need your support.

The 26.2mile route will take runners around London, starting in Greenwich Park, around the docklands, past Tower Hill and along the Embankment and finishing at St James’s Park.

A team of 21 are running in aid of the Spinal Injuries Association — including H&H’s deputy picture editor Emma McCall.

Emma will be joined by representatives from the British Horseracing Authority, the British Racing School, Weatherbys, The Racing Post, the Professional Jockeys Association, Racing UK and various racecourses around the country.

The team are aiming on raising £37,500 and are currently on £22,689.

Paul Adams and John Morris are running for The Brooke — the UK’s leading charity for hard working horses and donkeys in the poorest parts of the world.

Paul, who is a sales executive for Lingfield Park has been running laps round the racecourse for training.

“I’ve wanted to do something for the Brooke for years, ever since I came across their clinic in Luxor whilst holidaying in Egypt. I saw first-hand the work the Brooke does to help horses, donkeys and mules who were often working in very poor conditions,” said Paul.

Multi-marathon runner, John, 52, from Shrewsbury, has taken part in a staggering 20 marathons. 20 years ago he ran his best marathon time of just 3 hours and 7 minutes and this time around has set himself the ambitious target of 3 hours and 15 minutes. John hopes his efforts will raise over £1,000 for the Brooke.

Phil Packer — Iraq veteran and Winner of the Helen Rollanson Award at the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year — aims to walk the London Marathon in 26 hours, supporting 26 charities, including the Riding for the Disabled Association.

This is quite an undertaking as he lost the use of his legs during an attack in Basra in February 2008.

Stuart Hyson will be running for HEROS — homing ex racehorses organisation scheme.

“This is an important charity that I have supported for some time now and they need all the help fund-raising that they can get,” said Stuart. “HEROS re-trains and re-homes these former athletes, ensuring that they have a long, happy and useful life when they move onto “pastures new”.

The organisation successfully re-homed an un-raced thoroughbred for me and we then re-homed a racehorse from HEROS who we still have.

With the 2009 London Marathon fast approaching on Sunday 26 April, H&H has heard from many runners who work in the horse industry or are running the 26 miles for equestrian or country causes.

Here is a list of who is running and how you can support them.

TRICIA HURST

Endurance rider Tricia Hirst is running in aid of the Multiple Sclerosis Resource Centre.

“My brother has Multiple Sclerosis and whilst I am still able to run and ride, he is not so fortunate. The MS Resource centre can make a real difference with providing those with this illness the information they need to cope with life,” said Tricia.

“Training for the London Marathon has been going — although a 20 mile run followed by a 50 mile endurance ride the following day was just a bit exhausting and not to be recommended!

“I have been training to try for a ‘Good for age’ time i.e. less than 4hrs and hope to be able to achieve this on the day.

“I feel that having done many endurance races of 100 miles in a day has certainly helped me cope with the mental side of running long distances.”

PAULINE ROBINSON

Pauline Robinson works on Burghwood Shetland Stud in Skeyton, Norfolk and will be running the 26 miles in Le Chameau wellies.

She is running in memory of her daughter Charlotte and is aiming on raising £4,000 for BEAT — an eating disorders charity — and is already up to over £3,400.

“This year I will be running the London Marathon for BEAT in memory of my daughter Charlotte who passed away in the summer of 2007 at the tender age of 18 from Anorexia,” said Pauline.

“And to make sure it is just a little bit more difficult I will be wearing my wellies!

“I can sing Charlotte’s praises forever, my job now is not only to remember her but to raise awareness and funds to help BEAT.”

NOELLE LOWRY

Noelle is a vet at Poolhouse Equine Clinic in Lichfield. She is aiming to reach a target of £1,500 for the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Trust.

French event rider Leonard Goerens is hoping to run the 26 miles in four hours. His daily training schedule includes riding 10 horses a day and then running seven miles.

Leonard, who is based in Crudwell in Wiltshire, is running in aid of Get Kids Going! — a charity that provides lightweight wheelchairs to enable disabled children to take part in sport.

“I love sport and I think Get Kids Going! is a great charity. Preparing for the marathon has been a great way to get myself fit for riding my horses this season,” Leonard told H&H.

FRED HODGES / ADAM LEVY

Event rider Fred and his friend Adam are running for The Spinal Injuries Association. Fred has competed up to CIC** and is an equine NVQ assessor.

Charles is joint master of the West Norfolk Foxhounds and is running in his first marathon.

Terri is a supporter of the CA’s North American Chapter and lives in New York — where she has completed the New York Marathon three times.

Gareth is joint-master and huntsman of the Shropshire Beagles. Prior to this he was whipper-in for the pack for 10 seasons. As well as the London Marathon Gareth is also in training for Marathon Des Sables in Morocco, a 151 mile endurance race which he hopes to complete in 2011.

Oliver follows the Devon and Somerset Staghounds and Dulveton Farmers and has won the Devizes to Westminster 125-mile canoe race. He also holds the Guiness World record for crossing the English Channel in a canoe.

Stuart is a keen shot and enjoys nothing more than helping out at his local shoot with his non-retrieving Border Terrier ‘Bramble’. It is his first marathon

This will be Hilary’s first and last marathon. She is a regular with the North Cotswold and Heythrop hunts.

Matthew works at a wildlife park and has followed the Culmstock Minkhounds for 20 seasons. It is his first marathon.

INJURED JOCKEYS FUND STAFF

Karen Hatton and Jeremy Zielinski from the Injured Jockeys Fund in Newmarket will be running again this year in aid of the charity.

Karen is a very keen runner and has been training hard in the hope to achieve a personal best time just a week before her 50th birthday, while Jeremy, also hoping for a personal best time, has just crammed in some beach running while on holiday in Australia.

Sponsors will have the chance to win a day at the races with them and the Injured Jockeys Fund and meet jockeys, trustees and some well know racing TV presenters.

Riding 10 horses a day and then running seven miles home is the daily schedule for event rider Leonard Goerens, who is in training for next month’s Flora London Marathon.

The French rider, who is based in Crudwell, Wiltshire, hopes to complete the 26-mile run in four hours.

He will be running for the Get Kids Going! charity that provides lightweight wheelchairs to enable disabled children to take part in sport.

“I love sport and I think Get Kids Going! is a great charity,” the three-star rider told H&H.

Former Olympic event rider Ginny Elliot and racehorse trainer Charlie Edgerton head the line up for the Flora London Marathon this Sunday (13 April) on behalf of CLIC Sargent’s “Billy’s Appeal”.

They join 18 others running in a bid to raise £2million for Billy’s Appeal. Billy Greenall, son of Johnny, former amateur champion jockey and current amateur huntsman of the Meynell and South Staffordshire, was diagnosed with Wilms Tumour aged three. With the support of leading cancer charity CLIC Sargent, Billy is now in remission at the age of six.

Billy’s Mother, Laura Greenall has dedicated her time to improving the resources available to the families of other cancer sufferers.

“Time away from the hospital was crucial to have fun and re-gather the strength to provide Billy with the will to live,” said Laura.

Money raised from the Flora London Marathon will be spent on a “home from home” near the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottinghamshire, providing free accommodation and essential escape for families from the clinical environment.

Equine exercise physiologist Dr David Marlin will speak at the Marathon Medicine Conference on 21 April, the day will before the London Marathon.

Former Animal Health Trust vet Dr Marlin is the first equine specialist to speak at the marathon conference, which is open to all medical professionals, including doctors and vets. He will discuss the equine equivalent of runners: endurance horses.

Dr Marlin, who is working with the International Equestrian Federation in the lead up to the 2008 Beijing Olympics, said: “There is a great opportunity for exchange of information here as some of the problems seen in human marathon runners are also seen in endurance horses.”

The conference takes place at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London.
