New city could be on the cards for popular new year show

Liverpool International Horse Show will not go ahead this year, as organisers continue the search for its new home – which could include a new city.

In a statement today (10 November) organisers said the 2022/3 show will not run as “despite every effort, securing a suitable date with the venue was not possible”.

The new year show has been held at the M&S Bank Arena Liverpool since its launch in 2016. It last took place in 2019 as the 2020 and 2021 editions were cancelled owing to the coronavirus pandemic.

Managing director Nina Barbour told H&H that the 2022/3 event had not been confirmed and this was “not a cancellation, because it was never planned”.

“We haven’t found the perfect formula of date, venue and location. Now that we’ve had a chance to take stock since Covid, it’s all up in the air as to what the perfect combination is. It’s not that we had ever published a concrete plan for this year. The dates haven’t been in the FEI calendar now for a while because we took the provisional dates out when we were looking through the options,” she said.

“We were looking at potentially moving the date to February because the trouble is with the new year dates; Liverpool gets full and the hotels run out, so there were a few fundamental issues there. We were then struggling to find a date in February with the venue, and during that time the whole commercial conversation changed significantly,” she said.

“The commercial arrangement that Liverpool Arena was able to do pre-Covid changed massively post-Covid. It’s not in a negative way, it’s just their circumstances and model changed. This was one of the triggers to re-evaluating the whole thing, including the availability of the dates and whether we are putting the product in the right location in the country. We’re taking stock and looking at all those different factors because when we land it again, we want to land it big.”

Ms Barbour confirmed to H&H that the Liverpool International Horse Show could move to a new city.

“All the time we’re actively working through what the best plan is for it,” she said.

“We’re very conscious that we had Covid and we’ve had a few stop-starts with it, so when we run it again it needs to be absolutely right and in the place where it finds its home, location and date, for good.”

Ms Barbour added that expansion plans are also under way for Bolesworth International in June.

“We’re fully committed to what we do within the sport. We’ve got big plans to expand the footprint of the international and have big ambitions,” she said.

“We’ve gone through the consolidation stage of Covid and we’re now ready to make that event much bigger for 2023, with a new lifestyle shopping area planned, and other plans we will announce in the next month or so.”

#Throwback: Liverpool puissance win is ‘best buzz ever’

In the week that historically hosts the Liverpool International Horse Show, we take a trip down memory lane to the year when four riders shared puissance honours and set a new show record height

Four riders shared the honours at 2.21m — a record height for the show — in the Hope Valley Saddlery Puissance at the TheraPlate UK Liverpool International Horse Show.

They included the joint Olympia winners — William Whitaker with RMF Charly and Mikey Pender with his Hickstead Derby hero Hearton Du Bois Halleux — and Guy Williams with his puissance specialist Mr Blue Sky UK, who took the Olympia puissance in 2018 and the Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) class this year.

But they were joined by a new face, Harry Whall. The 28-year-old, competing in his first puissance competition with new ride Quality Old Joker, came close to tipping off on landing in the first round, but grew in confidence as the five rounds went on.

“That was the best buzz ever!” exclaimed the 28-year-old from Market Rasen. “It is a dream come true. I didn’t expect him to jump so high in the first round, but once I got on the right spot it was great.”

Harry bought 11-year-old Quality Old Joker, who won this class at Liverpool in 2017 and the puissance at Olympia in 2016 with former rider Holly Smith, a couple of months ago.

Holly won last night’s big class, the Horseware Ireland-sponsored 1.50m competition, on former event horse Denver, owned by Ian Dowie. The 11-year-old competed up to CCI4* level with Emilie Chandler and Constance Copestake before turning to showjumping with Holly this summer.

Tabitha Kyle’s outstanding year continued with victories in both the Wicks Group 128cm championship and the P Gowans Civil Engineering 138cm final.

BSPS supreme M&M final moves again after Liverpool cancellation

The British Show Pony Society (BSPS) LeMieux supreme Heritage Mountain and Moorland (M&M) ridden championship is to return to the London International Horse Show following the cancellation of the Liverpool International Horse Show.

The prestigious final, which was set to be held on New Year’s Day at Liverpool for the very first time, was left without a home after the show announced it was not to run owing to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The BSPS supreme M&M final will now return to the London International Horse Show, formerly known as Olympia, to be held at the ExCel, on Monday 20 December.

The format of the competition will remain similar and members will be able to buy discounted tickets.

The majority of the finalists qualified for the BSPS supreme M&M final at the BSPS Heritage championships last month, while some were awarded direct tickets for lifting championships at respective shows. There were also four combinations who had qualified for the 2020 final but had their qualifications moved to this year as the show did not run.

BSPS chairman Pat Pattinson said: “I am delighted and thankful that the organisers of the London International Horse Show have welcomed us back, especially at short notice, and we can’t wait to be part of this prestigious and fun show just before Christmas.”

“The London International Horse Show is an iconic show and one that the BSPS is proud to be a part of.”

Competitors will compete for the top 10 placings as well as the coveted best of breed awards.

The 2019 champion was Emma Burrow and her own Welsh section D gelding Dyffryngwy Sir Picasso, with the reserve spot going to Melanie and Gemma Stanford’s Highland stallion Benbreac Of Croila ridden by Matthew Cooper.

‘The risk is just too high’: Liverpool International Horse Show cancelled

The organisers of the Voltaire Design Liverpool International Horse Show say they are “devastated” to have to cancel the 2021-22 event, but that it is the “only responsible thing to do”.

The event was due to run at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool from New Year’s Eve to 3 January. But organisers have announced, with “huge regret”, that they have made the “very difficult decision” to cancel.

“With the ever-changing Covid-19 environment and with the recent announcements made by the Government and the Liverpool Health Protection Board, which oversees the city’s response to the pandemic, as event organisers the risk associated with responsibly staging an indoor event of this kind after Christmas, with respect to members of the public, and the knock-on implication of this risk to our loyal partners, suppliers, retailers, riders and their guests, is just too high at this time,” a statement released last night (25 October) read.

Show founder Nina Barbour said the team was “naturally devastated”.

“We can only hope that our loyal supporters understand our genuine reasons for being forced to cancel this year’s event,” she said.

“The reality of the situation is that we have to measure the risks of moving forward with an indoor event in early January, with the facts and concerns that we currently face whilst having to carefully negotiate the ongoing uncertainty relating to this pandemic.

“We feel that the only responsible thing to do is to make this decision now, and it goes without saying that we remain fully committed to supporting equestrian sport moving forwards and we will be throwing our energy into making all the exciting events that we have planned for 2022 truly the best experiences that we can for everyone involved.”

All Liverpool International Horse Show ticket buyers will be contacted, and all will be eligible for full refunds.

Britain’s top ridden native ponies move from Olympia to new venue

The British Show Pony Society’s (BSPS) Le Mieux Mountain and Moorland Supreme Championship will not take place at Olympia, the London International Horse Show this year.

In a statement today (5 February) BSPS confirmed the final will be held at Liverpool International Horse Show, on 1 January 2022.

“We are saddened not to be able to hold our Le Mieux Mountain and Moorland Supreme Championship at Olympia, due to development work [at the venue] and our thanks go to that committee for all their support,” said a spokesman.

The championship has taken place at Olympia since 2011, and BSPS executive council member Simon Richardson told H&H the organisation had had a “super time” there.

“We had to look for an alternative venue and it’s very hard to emulate Olympia so we had to put our thinking caps on,” he said.

“We had discussions with Nina Barbour, managing director of Liverpool International Horse Show. There have never been showing classes at Liverpool but they were keen to host us, the show has a great reputation and we’re looking forward to it.”

Simon said the format for the championship will remain the same, with individual shows in the morning followed by a presentation in the afternoon.

“We will still have 40 ponies to qualify, but we did have four qualify in 2020 so they will automatically be going,“ he said.

“We will have a mix of direct qualifiers, our heritage show in October where we will have six classes, and our 12 separate breed classes, so it means we will get a minimum of one of each of the 12 native breeds qualifying.”

Simon added that a direct qualifier will also be held at Bolesworth International Horse Show (20-23 May).

“It’s all quite exciting,” he said. “People who have never been to Bolesworth will have a great experience, the facilities there are absolutely second to none.

#Throwback: when Carl Hester took Liverpool dressage crown on Nip Tuck

In the week that is historically the week of the Liverpool International Horse Show, we take a trip down memory lane to last year’s action, when the master of British dressage posted another impressive win on his Olympic partner Nip Tuck

Carl Hester and Jane De La Mare’s Nip Tuck trounced the opposition in the Equitop GLME dressage class at the TheraPlate UK Liverpool International Horse Show.

The illustrious pair, team silver medallists for Britain at the 2016 Olympics and the 2014 World Equestrian Games, scored 83.063% for a victory of more than 6% over Henriette Andersen and Flavio.

“That was great!” said Carl. “He’s a pretty clever old thing — this is his first show since the nationals [where they won the overall grand prix title] in September, and we just do half an hour’s warm-up and go for it.”

Fifteen-year-old Nip Tuck counts wins in the World Cup class at Olympia among his many successes.

Henriette scored 76.938% on her own 13-year-old Flavio to take the runner-up spot a fraction ahead of Louise Bell and Into The Blue (76.25%).

She said: “Coming second to Carl is like winning anyway — I’ll take that! It was quite hard work, though — Flavio hasn’t really done indoor shows and it is quite intense and bright in here. It’s so lovely to be here, though.”

There were 10 competitors in the mixed intermediate I/grand prix freestyle class. Of the three intermediate I tests, Jessica Dunn and Alicante Valley scored the highest with 75.25% and took overall fourth place in the competition.

British team veteran Emma Hindle was fifth on the exuberant chestnut 11-year-old Diesel 8, a son of Vivaldi, with a mark of 73.688%, while Sarah Higgins was sixth with 73.15% aboard Alfranco.

‘Great sadness’ as Liverpool International cancelled, but hope some competition may still run

It is with “great sadness and regret” that this year’s Liverpool International Horse Show has been cancelled — although a lower-level event may still run behind closed doors.

Bolesworth Events announced today (18 September) that the event, which should have run from New Year’s Eve until 3 January 2021, would not go ahead.

The organising team had been working with the M&S Bank Arena for months, hoping to find a way to run a viable indoor show under the “current challenging circumstances”.

“With the health and safety, as well as the welfare, of the equestrian community at the heart of our decision-making, we must act responsibly,” a spokesman said.

“As a result, given the commercial implications and current government guidance regarding social distancing and mass gatherings, it is clear an event of this scale poses far too great a risk to host in what has already been a challenging year.

“We appreciate that many riders and supporters will be disappointed by this news and would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone directly involved with the event; our sponsors, visitors, competitors, exhibitors, officials and contractors for their continued support.”

Managing director Nina Barbour said that, having run successful competitions at Bolesworth this summer, including the NAF Five Star British Showjumping National Championships, the Al Shira’aa Bolesworth Young Horse Championships and the Al Shira’aa Training Show Summer Series, the team knows it is possible to host competition safely behind closed doors at an outdoor venue.

“The key challenge has been to transfer this model into an indoor environment with the public in attendance; it simply hasn’t been feasible from a health and safety or commercial point of view,” she said.

“Earlier this year, we hosted ‘Equestrian Relief’; bringing together the equestrian community to raise money in support of our NHS heroes. Having raised over £300,000, we very much hoped that Liverpool would be a celebration of this campaign and herald the end of what has been a challenging year for so many, and we are currently scoping alternative ways of achieving this.

“As with all our events this year; we are keen to support the UK equestrian industry back into competition at the top level and it feels only right we continue this work and support our elite riders as they prepare for Tokyo 2021. We aim to better understand the viability of running this event by the start of October, with further information released as soon as possible.

Carl Hester, Scott Brash and Zara Tindall among host of stars baking, planking and painting for NHS

Carl Hester, Frankie Dettori and Scott Brash are among the equestrian sporting stars who have signed up for a new team fundraising campaign in aid of the NHS.

The organisers behind Bolesworth and Liverpool international horse shows have launched “Equestrian Relief”, with money raised going to NHS Charities Together.

Between Monday 6 April and Monday 13 April, two members of every team (see below) will take part in a challenge each day, with highlights shown across social media at 7pm.

The challenges include: on the gallops, plankety plank, horse drawn, showstopper and dark horse, which aim to “test riders’ skills physically, creatively and artistically”.

“Our priority is to unite the horse world to support our health workers and our goal is to raise a sum of money that will make a real difference,” said Bolesworth managing director, Nina Barbour.

“All donations will go directly to NHS Charities Together Covid-19 Crisis Fund — supporting NHS staff and volunteers on the front line as they work under pressure and in the most challenging of circumstances.

“We’ve already got some fabulous sponsors on board, including long-standing Bolesworth supporters Equerry, Equitop and Horse Scout, who have all made generous contributions to get us started.”

A charity auction will also be launched on 6 April, featuring “money can’t buy” experiences, such as going behind the scenes with ITV Racing, a round of golf with Oli Bell and AP McCoy, plus the paintings produced by the teams in the “horse drawn” challenge.

Zara Tindall said she is looking forward to seeing how much they can raise.

“It’s a very challenging time for the equestrian community, with so many people affected in so many ways,” she said.

“Being a high-risk activity, we also have a responsibility to minimise the impact on the NHS who are valiantly working to support the nation and save lives. Taking part in Equestrian Relief and knowing that donations are going directly to help NHS workers on the front line makes it a no-brainer for me.”

Frankie Dettori added he is “super excited” to take part in the plankety plank and the bake-off Easter showstopper challenges.

“It’s going to be great fun, but we are all very competitive so I can’t wait to get started – so please make sure you support us!” he said.

Scott Brash said:“As a strong equestrian community we must stay united in the battle against Covid-19 and we are hopeful Equestrian Relief can make a huge impact in raising funds directly to support those who are putting their own lives at risk to help others.”

Twomey takes Liverpool grand prix for third time

Ireland’s Billy Twomey claimed the TheraPlate UK Grand Prix on New Year’s Eve at the TheraPlate UK Liverpool International Horse Show for the third time in the five-year history of the show.

Having won Liverpool’s premier class in 2015 and 2016 aboard Diaghilev, the Irish rider rode Kim Barzilay’s Kimba Flamenco this time.

The pair jumped one of only five first-round clears over Alan Wade’s track, which featured tall, airy verticals and some tight striding.

Billy and the 10-year-old son of Je T’Aime Flamenco were fifth to go in the jump-off, which also included the three fastest four-faulters. Jack Whitaker preceded him on Elucar VE, posting an immaculate clear, but his time of 42.87 seconds looked beatable.

Billy and Kimba Flamenco touched the oxer that formed the first part of the double, but it stayed in the cups and they raced home in 40.93 seconds.

Holly Smith and her World Equestrian Games partner Heart’s Destiny were faster, in 39.61 seconds, but they weren’t so lucky with that oxer and it fell.

Italy’s Emanuele Camilli and Jakko had two down, and it was left to Guy Williams to beat Billy. He started at the gallop, but an incredibly tight turn on Cicero II to the red “postbox” vertical was too much and down it went, leaving Billy as the winner.

“He’s a horse who’s always with you and is very fast, so you can set off and give it a go,” said Billy. “I felt I put it up to the riders who were after me in the best way I could.”

McCarthy races to eventing grand prix victory at Liverpool

Padraig McCarthy raced round the tight indoor arena at the TheraPlate UK Liverpool International Horse Show to win the John Oates Horseboxes Eventing Grand Prix.

Riding Tatiana Brent’s Rosemaber Lancuest, a 14-year-old mare by Orlando, he recorded a time of 91.37 seconds — fractionally ahead of Paul Sims, who prevented an Irish whitewash by finishing second in a time of 91.43 seconds.

“She’s a super-easy, fun mare who competed to CCI4* level but is now focusing on these classes,” said Padraig, who won the indoor eventing competition in Geneva on her last winter and finished third there this year.

Paul was riding nine-year-old Second City, owned by Hayley Mather and Mark Hogan.

“He’s cool — a really fun horse,” said Paul. “He loves this — he’s a real cross-country machine.

“This was quite a similar track to the ones [course-designer] Mark Phillips produced at Bolesworth, so I knew what to expect, but this was the first time that I have jumped the joker [the huge final fence which, if cleared, took three seconds off the riders’ times]!”

Cathal, who also jumped in the under-25 grand prix at Liverpool last night, confirmed that he was keeping the ride on Alcatraz II, who spent the final part of the season with Oliver Townend after moving from Alex Bragg.

Joseph Murphy and 18-year-old Sportsfield Othello, veterans of two European Championships for Ireland, also only tipped the final joker fence to finish fourth in a time of 95.33 seconds. Emma Hyslop-Webb and Pennlands Douglas were fifth, and Laura Collett and Cooley Again took sixth place.

‘Dream team’ wins Liverpool mini major pairs class

“We were the dream team!” said William Fletcher after winning the Glenbrook Property Mini Major Pairs in partnership with 10-year-old Alfie Diaper at the TheraPlate UK Liverpool International Horse Show.

William, who rode Di Wilson’s 11-year-old mare Tiger Bright, and Alfie, aboard 22-year-old Euro Magic, sped round in a time of 50.11 seconds.

“Alfie did an amazing job with very tight turns.”

Second were Ireland’s Mikey Pender and Saroise O’Neil in 51.91 seconds, while Eve McCoy – daughter of the legendary National Hunt jockey AP McCoy – and Anthony Condon were third in a time of 54.36.

Alfie, who lives in Dorset and is a member of the Poole and District branch of the Pony Club, is having a stellar week at Liverpool. Yesterday — the first day of the four-day show — he won the first heat of the Jones Brothers Shetland Pony Grand National.

“My dream was to win a rug,” admitted Alfie, “and now I have.”

William said: “It took me four years to win a rug here!”

There were two showjumping classes for amateur riders at TheraPlate UK Liverpool this morning. Grace Wallace won the Black Cat Building Consultancy 1.25m competition with the 10-year-old mare Eau Claire V, while Melissa Garry was second on Hotesse.

The opening 1.15m class, sponsored by Jolliffe & Co, went to Tony Pearson (Berlin). Ireland’s Carol Gee of Fernhill Sports Horses was second on Fernhill Splash.

Young British rider wins under-25 grand prix at Liverpool

James Whitaker won the Equerry Horse Feeds Under-25 Grand Prix on the first day of the TheraPlate UK Liverpool International Horse Show. Riding the Lutener family’s 11-year-old Caloro Ex Z, the 22-year-old member of showjumping’s most famous family produced one of only two double clear rounds.

Stopping the clock at 42.75 seconds in the jump-off, James overtook fellow British rider Robert Murphy and Highgrove Violet, who completed Alan Wade’s track in 43.25 seconds.

Faster than them both in a time of 42.68 was Harry Wainwright on Pinheiro Beech, but a pole down in the first round meant they could only finish third, while Ireland’s Jason Foley, the only other first-round clear with Castlefield Cass and last to go in the jump-off, hit two fences and took fourth place.

James only took over the ride on the Candillo Z gelding from Elizabeth Lutener four months ago.

He said: “We didn’t have the best of weeks at Olympa, but we’ve come back, tried harder and got stronger for it. You’ve got to learn from your mistakes, and this was just as tough a course as Olympia.

“Going second-last in the jump-off played into my hands a bit as I could put pressure on Jason in pole position. This is a great way to end the year.”

It was a British clean sweep in the showjumping classes at TheraPlate UK Liverpol today, as Harriet Nuttall took both of the first two competitions — the opening 1.40m two-phase on Night Of Glory, and the Ifor Williams Trailers Ride & Drive with Silver Lift.

Guy Williams won the Pullman Hotel 1.45m speed class on the experienced Rouge De Ravel.

“He’s probably won about 20 rankings classes this year and something like this is right up his street because he’s very fast,” said Guy. “The only person I was worried about was Lily [Attwood, who finished second] — I train her and I know her horse is really fast too.”

Whitaker dynasty among top Brits to compete at Liverpool

World-leading showjumpers are set to go head-to-head at the Theraplate UK Liverpool International Horse Show (28 to 31 December) as they battle it out in classes including in the prestigious New Year’s Eve grand prix.

Among the top riders competing, the Whitaker dynasty will be represented by John and Michael, who will be joined by Robert and Jack, Ellen and William.

“Leading British stars Holly Smith, Guy Williams, William Funnell, Louise Saywell, Matthew Sampson and Georgia Tame will be joining them to provide the very best showjumping sport in the run-up to the new year,” said a spokesman for the Liverpool International Horse Show.

“The show is always a huge draw for Irish riders with last year’s grand prix winner Shane Breen confirmed to attend. Shane will again be riding Golden Hawk – a leading stallion owned by new show supporters Old Lodge Stud. He will be joined by Daniel Coyle and Billy Twomey, a two-time Liverpool champion, Anthony Condon, Richard Howley and Mikey Pender.”

Overseas competition will come by way of riders including Angelie Von Essen for Sweden, Tobis Meyer for Germany and Italian Olympian Emanuele Guadiano.

Teddy the Shetland tours Liverpool ahead of show appearance

The countdown to the Theraplate UK Liverpool International Horse Show is under way, and the world’s most Insta-famous Shetland Teddy has been helping to build up the excitement, paying a visit to the venue for a sneak preview.

The diminutive palomino social media star dropped in on the M&S Bank Arena, where the show will be held from 28 to 31 December, before touring the city with racing commentator and former jockey Emma Spencer.

Teddy’s preview tour came ahead of his special appearance at the show on New Year’s Eve, where he will take part in an “Audience With…” segment alongside fellow internet sensation, vlogger This Esme, at 4pm.

During his tour of Liverpool, Teddy visited the Liverpool Big Wheel, the Albert Docks, horse monument and Beatles Story exhibition. He also caught a glimpse of the Mersey and took a ride on a Liverpool bus.

And although it was a long day for Teddy’s little legs, he also had a bid at the Shetland puissance world record — whether or not he succeeded will be revealed at the show.

Teddy is owned by advanced eventer Alice Goring, who originally bought him as a five-month-old foal as a companion for her horses. He turned into an Instagram sensation, with an account that has now amassed more than 130,000 followers, and has established a career as an equine “influencer”.

Fans of the fluffy Shetland will be able to enjoy a 40-minute meet-and-greet session in the Arena Theatre at Liverpool.

Liverpool International to host world premier of new horsemanship spectacle

A new show from performing artist and horseman Gilles Fortier will have its world premiere at the TheraPlate UK Liverpool International Horse Show.

The Frenchman will be showcasing his performance “Magnetism”, which involves a mix of acrobatics, dance, aerial stunts, music and a pyrotechnic display.

The choreography will feature skilled horses along with a team of talented acrobats, including members of his family, along with a high-tech light show.

“It is fantastic to be hosting such a technical and highly skilled act that will keep everyone entertained and in awe of the skill required by Gilles and his team,” said show president Nina Barbour.

The show will take place as part of the afternoon and evening performances at the show, which will be held at the M&S Bank Arena from 28 to 31 December.

“Gilles Fortier has a reputation that is unrivalled in the equestrian world,” said a spokesman for the show.

“His unique skill in schooling some of the most spectacular horses and in using them to create magnificent showpieces has resulted in an unsurpassed entertainment experience.

“During his shows Gilles awakens emotions with a mixture of ancient techniques in a mixture of distinct styles, from dance to theatre through to circus, pyrotechnics and modern special effects. He portrays horsemanship through a range of stunning visual images.”

Top riders to battle it out in ‘must-watch’ grand prix final

Top riders are set to take part in the “must-watch” final of the Cazenove Capital eventing grand prix at the Liverpool International Horse Show (28 to 31 December).

Gemma Tattersall, Emily King, Jeanette Breakwell and Polly Stockton are among the 20 riders set to contest Captain Mark Phillips’ course of showjumps and cross-country fences on the Sunday evening (29 December).

Two qualifiers were held for the event, at the Equerry Bolesworth International Horse Show (12 to 16 June) and the Equitop Bolesworth Young Horse Championship Show (14 to 18 August).

A spokesman for the Liverpool International Horse Show said: “The qualifier in June saw a great win for Gemma Tattersall riding Santiago Bay. Jay Halim and Abrisco finished second, with long-time leader Bill Levett taking third on Athleet V. The remaining three Liverpool places were filled by Emma Hyslop-Webb, Hannah Bate and Jeanette Brakewell.

“The second leg of the series produced a superlative win for Nicky Hill and Kilrodan Sailorette, fast becoming the ones to watch in eventing grand prix style competitions after their win at Hickstead this summer.”

Show president Nina Barbour said: “We were delighted with the success of the eventing grands prix at both shows and can’t wait to witness the fantastic talent of Britain’s leading event riders indoors at Liverpool.

British champions Carl and Barney are heading to Liverpool

National champions Carl Hester and Nip Tuck are among the superstars due to perform at this year’s TheraPlate UK Liverpool International Horse Show (28 to 31 December).

The multiple medal-winning combination will showcase a grand prix test in the M&S Bank Arena on Saturday, 28 December, their debut at the venue. They will also compete in the Equitop GLME freestyle competition during the Saturday evening performance.

Show president Nina Barbour said: “We are delighted to be welcoming back dressage superstar Carl. He is an inspiration to the sport at a global level and it is a privilege to have him join us at Liverpool.

“The sport of dressage has grown beyond recognition and we are looking forward to watching some of the most talented and up-and-coming dressage horses in the country as they work towards grand prix.

“The M&S Bank Arena is a fantastic venue and there will certainly be plenty of atmosphere to give the crowd a real taste of top-class dressage.”

It was a 10^th national champion title for Carl last month, and he was delighted to secure it on “Barney”.

“He deserves it for what he’s given to British dressage – he’s represented Britain at European, World and Olympic level and always been so solid – he was due the win,” he said.

Mark Phillips to design new eventing grand prix series

A new three-leg eventing grand prix series is to run at Bolesworth and Liverpool this year – with Mark Phillips confirmed as the course-designer.

Two qualifying legs will be held at the Equerry Bolesworth International Horse Show (12 to 16 June) and the Bolesworth Young Horse Championships (14 to 18 August), with the top five riders in each class qualifying for the final at the Theraplate UK Liverpool International Horse Show (28 to 31 December).

“Having visited the Liverpool International Horse Show last year on New Year’s Eve, where the production exceeded all my expectations, I am delighted to be involved with this exciting new eventing grand prix series which will give event riders a fantastic opportunity to compete in a world class environment,” Mark said.

The invitational feature class on the evening of 13 June at Bolesworth, which has a £4,000 prize fund, will be a “fast and furious” competition, providing “great entertainment”, a spokesman for the show said.

It will involve 20 leading eventers taking on a course of showjumps and cross-country fences, against the clock in the international arena. The showjumping will be a maximum height of 1.25m, with time added for each one knocked down, with an optional 1.35m joker fence. The cross-country jumps will be at British Eventing intermediate level (1.20m).

“Last year’s Cazenove Capital Eventing Grand Prix proved a fantastic competition and this year we want to build on its success and make it part of a three-event series,” said Bolesworth International promoter Nina Barbour.

Harry Charles: 2018 was more than I expected H&H VIP

Liverpool International is a super show; it gets fantastic attendance and it’s brilliant that showjumping is being brought into other areas of the country, getting more people involved in the sport.

Everything has run really well, the riders all really like it here — the arena is a fantastic size and there has been good-quality jumping, with not too many competitors, which is perfect for an indoor show as it keeps the crowd entertained. Nina Barbour has done an amazing job at putting more good shows back into the UK, which is something the sport desperately needs.

For me, Harriet Nuttall was one of the stand-out performances of the week — her win in the 1.50m with a very fast jump-off was very impressive.

To win a ranking class at Liverpool was brilliant — we have a lot of young riders in the CSI4* here, which is fantastic and the way it should be as the sport needs to keep developing the younger generation.

Graham Babes, who was on the gold medal-winning young rider Europeans team with me, is one of my best mates and a brilliant rider, so for me and him to be first and second in that class was great.

Big plans

I’m going to aim for the senior Europeans next year with ABC Quantam Cruise; we’ve made a system and plan already to build him up to that.

As well as that, I’ll be riding as part of the Miami Celtics team on the Global Champions Tour, so developing a good team of horses is my main goal — we are nearly there and I’m lucky enough to have brought my second string to Liverpool, so for them to be going as they have is extremely exciting.

One of my major milestones this year was that I bought the first horse I have ever owned myself, Doulita. She came from Rowan Willis and was already a good horse when she arrived, but I’ve put a lot of work into her over the past year and think she has the potential to go even bigger now.

Next year we will look at potentially building her into being a grand prix horse, so this is a good stepping stone for her.

What a year

My year has definitely been more than I expected. I started off on the Sunshine Tour with a win in my first ever CSI4* grand prix on Controe — a horse we never thought would be so competitive at 1.60m level, and it all went from there.

I joined the Young Riders Academy and they have given me a lot of help, including getting me an entry to Aachen. This summer I went to my first Global Champions Tour in London, jumped at Hickstead and was selected for my first few senior Nations Cups.

Then, of course, there was winning double gold at the young rider European Championships and jumping at Olympia — a show I’ve wanted to ride at since I was a child. Then to have an amazing show here, especially on Doulita, it has been the perfect way to round off an amazing year.

Super showjumping, cheering crowds and wow-factor performances: the best moments from Liverpool 2018

The Theraplate UK Liverpool International Horse Show returned to end the year with a bang, featuring world-class showjumping and dressage, plus top live music, stunt bikes, speedy ponies and a huge helping of fun. After the heartbreak of last year’s car park fire, organiser Nina Barbour vowed the show would return in 2018 as “the best show yet”, and it did. H&H takes a look at what made this year’s event so special…

1. A top-class grand prix

Shane Breen and Golden Hawk were popular winners of the 1.60m feature class on New Year’s Eve with a masterful performance. This was the 13-year-old stallion’s first grand prix win, after finishing second numerous times. Shane’s victory also continued Ireland’s unbeaten streak in the class, with Billy Twomey taking the crown on the previous two occasions (2015 and 2016).

2. The puissance

Jumping a 7ft wall takes a serious dose of courage. Jumping a 7ft wall on a horse you have never ridden before takes that to another level. King of catch rides Matt Sampson proved he has nerves of steel, wowing the crowd with his ride aboard Laura Renwick’s Top Dollar VI — who Matt had sat on for the first time less than an hour before the class. He shared the top prize with Irish teenager Mikey Pender, joint winner of the 2018 Dublin puissance, after clearing 2.20m (7ft 2.6in).

3. Dressage legends in action

VIP (or rather, VIH) Valegro made a super special trip to Liverpool with Charlotte Dujardin and Carl Hester to see his fans ahead of the Equitop Myoplast invitational inter I freestyle, which was won by Charlotte on Florentina VI. In second was Katie Bailey aboard Boccelli 6, with multiple medal-winning para dressage star Sophie Wells third on her World Equestrian Games gold and silver medallist C Fatal Attraction.

4. Harriet Nuttall’s show to remember

The Somerset-based rider capped her epic 2018 with a show to remember — standing on the podium no fewer than five times. Harriet and Galway Bay Jed won Saturday’s Voltaire Design 1.50m class and she finished the day with a third place in the Conway Land Rover ride & drive aboard her 2016 Hickstead Speed Derby winner, Silver Lift (“Mickey”). She then donned her Superwoman outfit and teamed-up with “Bumblebee” Sula von Bulow, aged eight-and-a-half, to win the Archo Developments mini major. Not done there — she ended her year with the runner-up spot in the grand prix aboard “Jed” and third in the knock-out on Mickey. Congratulations!

5. He put a ring on it

New Year’s Eve was a time for a whole host of celebrations, none more so than the member of the audience who popped the question to his surprised girlfriend in front of a crowd of thousands. She said yes!

6. The commentators

From Matt Millin helping with the marriage proposal, to Geoff Billington’s outstanding frog impression (explaining how to clear the puissance wall, obviously), the whole team had the crowds laughing and cheering throughout.

7. Future stars

The future of British showjumping looked bright, with young riders and horses rising to the top. Olympic youth silver medallist Jack Whitaker, 17, claimed the under-25 grand prix title aboard Scenletha, with 15-year-old Oliver Fletcher taking second and third aboard KBIS Caicos and Hello Disckoboy DN respectively. Young rider European double gold medallist Harry Charles won the Hope Valley Saddlery 1.45m world ranking class aboard Doulita, with his team-mate Graham Babes in second on Boucheron. Harry and Doultia also picked up a podium spot in Saturday’s 1.45m. In the grand prix, third-placed William Funnell’s scopey eight-year-old Billy Diamo looked an exciting prospect for years to come.

8. Mini heroes

Stars of the future were also in action on their whizzy ponies. Ireland’s Seanan Reape and Mickybo followed-up their viral Dublin win with first place in the 128cm championship, sponsored by Pony of the Year Show. Meanwhile, mini major winner Sula melted hearts when she told the press she loved her pony Bellfield Benjamin “with all her heart”. Eve McCoy, daughter of 20-time champion jump jockey AP, had one of the stand-out moments of the show with her lightening round in the mini major.

9. Golden Groom award

Daniel Tarpey, groom to the Charles team, was the deserving recipient of the Theraplate Golden Grooms award, winning the use of a new Toyota Aygo plus a Theraplate for his yard for the next 12 months. The award was judged on horse’s turn-out, condition and overall wellbeing.

10. Happy New Year!

With jaw-dropping performances from Phoenix — Gilles Fortier’s equestrian spectacle — as well as the ever-popular Arenacross freestyle motocross team, music from Beau Dermott and Belle Voci, plus the Shetland pony Grand National alongside the world-class equestrian sport, there was no time to be bored. Rick Parfitt Jnr and the RPJ Band had the crowds singing, cheering across the show and rang-in the New Year with a bang.

A catch ride, a teenager and one massive wall: Britain and Ireland share Liverpool puissance victory

Matt Sampson’s magnificent joint puissance win with star Irish teenager Michael Pender raised the roof at the finale to an action-packed day at Liverpool, which featured superheroes, a British one-two in the CSI4* speed class, plus the continuation of a cracking week for Polly Shaw in the amateur classes

Britain and Ireland shared the top honours in a gripping five-round puissance class on the third day of the Theraplate UK Liverpool International Horse Show (30 December).

Matt Sampson, 28, and catch ride Top Dollar VI shared the spoils with Irish teenager Michael Pender and Hearton Du Bois Halleux after both cleared 2.20m (7ft 2.6in) in the class, sponsored by Equitop GLME.

Top Dollar’s owner/rider Laura Renwick asked Matt if he would jump the horse less than an hour before the start of the class.

“Laura rang me about an hour before and asked me what I was doing, I said ‘nothing’ and she said ‘would you like to ride [Top Dollar] in the puissance?’,” said Matt, who also won the 2017 British Speed Derby on a catch ride.

“It was a bit different as I hadn’t jumped the horse before – I didn’t really know him, which was maybe wasn’t such a bad thing.

“I just tried to ride forward and give him a little bit of room as he is such a big horse and keep him confident.

“It was easier as time went on as I figured out how to ride him and trusted him a bit more.”

Matt hailed a cab as he went over the wall for a final time, before landing to huge cheers from the packed arena.

Michael, 19, finished second at Bolesworth and shared the puissance victory at Dublin earlier this year on the same horse.

The pair produced five magnificent jumps over the wall, despite needing the farrier between the final two rounds, to be crown joint winners tonight.

“The first round he was a little bit sticky, then from the second round he started to feel more confident,” said Michael.

“The last round was his best and it felt like he could even jump bigger, so I’m delighted.”

Ireland’s Shane Breen (Acorad 3), Nano Healy (KMS Clintland) and Michael Whyte (Amaretto) finished joint third after clearing 2.10m (6ft 11in), but knocking the final wall.

Need for speed

Young riders shone in the Hope Valley Saddlery CSI4* 1.45m speed class with two rising British stars filling the top spots.

Harry Charles and his own Doulita took the win, while 20-year-old Graham Babes and Boucheron claimed the runner-up spot. Both riders were on the gold medal-winning team at the 2018 European Championships for young riders this summer.

Turkey’s Derin Demirsoy and Dadjak Ter Puttenen were drawn first to go and led for most of the class, making the course look easy.

But confident and quick clears from both Harry and Graham pushed Derin down the leaderboard into third.

Harry, 19, finished third aboard Doulita in yesterday’s world ranking class and said the result was a confidence boost.

“She’s my horse — the only horse I’ve ever owned myself — so I’ve put a lot of work into her behind the scenes at home,” he explained, adding he bought her last year from Australia’s Rowan Willis.

“She felt really good and really confident, so I said I would let her have another go today — I let her off from the very start and she was even better again today.”

He added she is “not the easiest” and has found the hackamore/gag combination suits her.

“She has a very funny mouth, but the way I set her up I let her poke her nose and do her own thing — it suits her and she jumps fantastically,” he said.

“She’s naturally very quick, actually she is deceptively fast as she sometimes doesn’t look as quick as the other horses, but she has a very nice step on her and a big jump, I don’t think we have seen the best of her yet, which is exciting.”

Superheroes to the rescue…

Speed demons Harriet Nuttall and Sula von Bulow could not be caught in the Archco Developments mini major relay.

Sula, aged eight-and-a-half, and her pony Bellfield Benjamin took some breathtaking turns to jump clear. Harriet, dressed as Superwoman, and her 2016 Hickstead Speed Derby winner Silver Lift produced a speedy round to take them into the lead in a time of 48.87 seconds — even with a three-second penalty for demolishing a fence.

“He is the best pony in the world,” said Sula, adding the 17-year-old is partial to grapes as a treat.

“He can go from sleeping to galloping round in less than a second. I love him with my whole heart.”

Harriet, who won Saturday’s feature CSI4* class, was full of praise for her “mini”.

“That was so much fun, Sula is amazing,” she said.

“Those classes are great for the kids, great for the crowd and we all try really hard — we don’t want to let these guys down as they are so competitive.”

In second were “Ironman” Paul Barker and Isabella Saunders-Cook in a time of 50.14 seconds, with “The Incredible Hulk” Emily Ward and Persia Calderbank close behind in third in 50.16 seconds.

Noora von Bulow, Lilly Aspell and a lightening-fast Eve McCoy were among the many other exceptional rounds in the talented class.

Full house

A top quality list of starters came forward for the Horseware Ireland 1.50m jump-off class, won by Luxembourg’s Charlotte Bettendorf on Hope Street.

Britain’s Holly Smith and the talented Claddagh Iroko produced two superb rounds, but were pipped to the win by 0.4 seconds. Ireland’s Billy Twomey completed the international podium in third with Chat Botte E.D.

Charlotte said the atmosphere was “amazing”.

“Today was a full house and you come into the ring and the crowd are all really into it, it is incredible,” she said.

“My mare is very sensitive, when I rode her this morning she could hear them opening Champagne bottles and was getting excited, but when I went into the ring she was focused on the fences.”

Charlotte, who won the CSI2* grand prix with the mare two weeks ago in Prague, added she is hoping for a “bit of luck” for tomorrow’s grand prix.

“I haven’t had her very long, she came over from the States and I’ve been riding her for two-and-a-half months — she gets better and better.”

Catch ride wins British Speed Derby at Hickstead

This year’s speed derby winner sat on his winning ride just twice after a three year break prior to victory

Second win for Shaw

Polly Shaw won her second class of the week with a victory in the Gatehouse amateur speed class on Golden Grove Alt A.

Polly, who won a two-phase yesterday, took top honours in this class in 2017 on the same horse.

Liverpool-based Joanne Mcglory won today’s other amateur class, riding borrowed horse Triomphe Kervec.

Harriet Nuttall and her home-produced star Galway Bay Jed were popular winners of the CSI4* 1.50m jump-off class on the second day of the Theraplate UK Liverpool International Horse Show (29 December).

The 2017 Queen Elizabeth II Cup-winning combination jumped two foot-perfect rounds to win the fiercely competitive class, sponsored by Voltaire Design.

A total of 12 out of the 31 starters jumped clear over the first round of Alan Wade’s technical track, including seven Brits.

Drawn third-last to go against the clock, Harriet knew she had to beat Tobias Meyer and Queentina’s time of 35.65 seconds, which she did comfortably by a margin of 1.25 seconds. In third was Sweden’s Angelie Von Essen and Cochella.

This was Galway Bay Jed’s “first proper show back” after a four-month break over the summer.

“I got halfway round the jump-off and I think my competitiveness took over as I started off slow and I got quicker and quicker,” said Harriet.

“He was amazing, when I ask him to go, he really can go.

“He is quite hard to turn, but he covers so much ground that when I turn I know that if I put my leg on he is away again, and he can also jump from quite a slow pace — he is an amazing horse to have, he is so clever, careful and scopey.”

Harriet added the horse’s break was due to some troubles with protein in his diet, which affected his front feet.

“We are happy with him now and he feels so good, it has actually done him good to have a bit of a break — he has really grown up and really muscled out and feels really good,” she said.

Harriet added it “means the world” to have produced the horse from a five-year-old.

“My family and everyone at home works so hard, we’ve always produced our own horses,” she said, adding they are “chuffed and proud” to have him.

“It takes a long time to get here, but once you do it is so worth it.”

Harriet followed-up her trophy with a third place in the Conway Land Rover ride & drive, riding her 2016 Hickstead Speed Derby winner Silver Lift.

The fun class was won by Paul Barker riding Dalton W, with professional driver Phil House behind the wheel.

“It was very good fun, it was a good class and Phil did a good job,” said Paul. “I qualified for the class this afternoon and Phil is a professional, so straight away I thought ‘there’s my man’.”

Phil added he was “over the moon” when Paul called him earlier today.

“I’m here with my missus, who is doing the amateur classes, but to do this was mega.”

The class was not without drama — the bridle slid off one of Sameh El Dahan’s rides, startling the horse and resulting in Sameh bailing out the side. Thankfully the horse was quickly caught and both were none the worse for the mishap.

However Sameh’s luck was in earlier in the day when the Egyptian showjumper piloted new ride Miss G Tracy into first place in the Pullman Hotel CSI4* 1.45m speed class.

The Northern Ireland-based rider was drawn midway through the 34-strong field, knocking provisional leaders Tobias Meyer and Coer De Lion 22 into second by 0.02 seconds.

“I’m very pleased as this is a new horse for us, for [my wife] Joanne and I, we decided to buy her a few months ago so this is a major win for us with her,” said Sameh, who bought the 13-year-old chestnut mare from Ireland’s Michael Kearins earlier this year.

“You have to be as competitive as you can — when you see the start list there are so many really good riders and really good horses, fast as well.

“I was in the middle of the class so I had to take every risk there was and sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t, but it worked out today so I’m really pleased.”

The Irish sport horse stumbled after the second fence, but quickly recovered her balance to jump clear.

“The third jump comes really quick, but she’s a brave horse and I just had to keep my cool — my reins were a little bit longer than I would have liked for the whole course, but it worked out.

“She’s a naturally quick horse, she has a lot of thoroughbred in her breeding and she acts like it — she’s a quick horse and has a lot of quality, you don’t have to chase her, you just stay in your rhythm and she is quick by nature.

“It’s always lucky when you are sat on a horse like this in a speed class as it makes that difference which obviously worked in our favour today.”

Nineteen-year-old Harry Charles was the best of the Brits with a beautiful round aboard Doulita to finish in third.

Winning returns

Pony European 2018 team gold and individual bronze medallist Claudia Moore topped the 148cm class for a second year running with two flawless clear rounds.

Claudia (pictured, above), who was riding Katrina Moore’s Delflip (“Flipper”), was drawn second to go in the six-strong jump-off.

A well-calculated round of crisp turns and sharp angles paid off and the pair stopped the clock on 31.49 seconds, putting pressure on those left to jump.

Anoushka Mauree and Miami Moonbeam were the next fastest, but tipped the planks, dropping them into third.

Lila Bremner and the eight-year-old Lapislazuli were last to go, jumping the only other double-clear of the class to take the runner-up spot.

“I was very nervous, but I knew my pony was capable of beating the others and it was the most amazing feeling to be able to go up [on the podium] for a second time as a second-time winner,” said Claudia, who won the 2017 class on her 2018 pony European medal-winning partner Elando van de Roshoeve.

She added she has had “the most magical year” and credited her success to her owners, grooms, helpers and parents.

Claudia has been riding Flipper since she was 12 and the pony was a green seven-year-old.

“I was bucked off the first time I rode her, but I kept working and I’ve had so much help from my mum and dad as well as all those who support me that she’s become this amazing pony who tries her best and has the biggest heart,” she added.

Meanwhile, Polly Shaw and Tony Pearson proved unstoppable in the amateur classes.

Hertfordshire-based Polly won the first class of the day, the John Deere at Turner Groundscare CSI amateur two-phase 1.15m, aboard her 2017 Liverpool-winning grey mare Golden Grove Alt A.

The combination pipped Tony and Bombastic to victory by 0.08 seconds, before a reversal of fortunes in the Horse & Country TV 1.25m two-phase.

In the second class, Tony was victorious with new ride Berlin and Polly finished second on Galano Ter Klomp.

“Myself and Polly sort of do the same shows,” said Tony. “We are both quite competitive, and we both know if we are in a class, it is going to be quick.”

Top groom to win car at Liverpool, plus the latest sponsorship news

The title sponsor of Liverpool International is providing the use of a car for a year to the show’s top groom.

Theraplate UK will provide a trophy and the use of a Toyota Aygo to the groom of the best turned-out horse, judged on condition and overall wellbeing, which has tried the Theraplate at the show.

“The Golden Groom Award recognises the groom’s role within the equestrian industry,” said business owner Dominic Fox.

“Equestrian sport regardless of the discipline would not be the same without the endless hours of hard work and dedication from our grooms.

“The Golden Groom Award is a great way for TheraPlate UK to support and reward this commitment. The winning groom will receive a trophy and the use of a Toyota Aygo for a year.”

A second new prize — the Peak Performance Award — will be presented to the rider, owner or trainer of the horse from the Golden Groom prize.

They will win a trophy and the use of a Theraplate for six months.

“We hope that the Peak Performance Award and the Golden Groom Award reflects our understanding and commitment to the equestrian industry,” added Mr Fox.

“Performance and wellbeing go hand in hand and it takes a team to succeed, these awards will certainly make a difference to the winning team.”

The presentations will be made after the grand prix on New Year’s Eve.

Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials

The CCI4* (CCI5* from next year) has chosen the Jon Egging Trust as its official charity of the year for 2019.

The trust was founded in memory of Red Arrows pilot, Flt Lt Jon Egging and helps young people overcome adversity through accredited learning programmes and access to inspirational role models and life-changing opportunities.

“We are very grateful for the time and effort that so many charities put into their applications this year and are thrilled to be supporting the Jon Egging Trust,” said event director Elizabeth Inman.

“Through their pioneering work, the Jon Egging Trust is making a real difference to young people’s lives and we are looking forward to working closely with the trust throughout 2019.”

Jockey Club

Insurance broker JLT Specialty, the specialist arm of Jardine Lloyd Thompson Group, has been revealed as an official partner of the Jockey Club.

This new three-year agreement builds on JLT’s racing sponsorships with the Jockey Club, at the Cheltenham Festival and the Randox Health Grand National at Aintree, and at Ascot, Newbury and York racecourses.

JLT is already the Jockey Club’s specialist insurance broker and as part of this new agreement, it will receive digital, branding and content rights at all 15 of The Jockey Club’s racecourses, as well as access to race tickets and hospitality for key clients and staff across JLT’s UK regional offices.

In other news, the Jockey Club has announced to maintain the contribution it makes to British racing’s prize money from its own resources in 2019 at the expense of other areas of investment.

This is significant as the Jockey Club faces a multi-million pound reduction in revenues from licensed bettin office media rights following the government gambling review earlier this year.

The Jockey Club has budgeted paying £27.1 million in prize money in 2019 across 347 programmed fixtures, mirroring its planned 2018 contribution, which was across 348 scheduled fixtures.

“We’ve had some tough decisions to make and we’ve chosen to prioritise our contribution to prize money because we know how important it is to racing’s participants,” said chief executive Paul Fisher.

“We will maintain this record contribution from our resources for as long as we can, which comes at a cost to other areas of investment, such as improving our facilities.

“We already reinvest every penny we make so a reduction in revenues means less to go back into the sport.”

New rides triumph in gripping start to Liverpool International

Olympic youth silver medallist Jack Whitaker claimed the under-25 grand prix crown on the opening night of the Theraplate UK Liverpool International Horse Show (28 December).

The 17-year-old produced two smart clear rounds aboard Scenletha, a new ride for the teenager, to win by just over two seconds.

Oliver Fletcher and KBIS Caicos jumped the only other double-clear of the class to finish second, with the rider also taking third with Hello Disckoboy DN.

Jack explained he had his first show aboard the eight-year-old mare, owned by Carl Hanley Sporthorses, in October.

“I really like her, I’ve not had her that long and have just been getting to know her,” he said.

He added he is trying her in a new bit — a hackamore combination — and has been playing around with her at home to help form a partnership with the athletic mare.

His plan to go “not too quick, but smooth”, beating Oliver’s time and adding pressure to final competitor Millie Allen, paid off.

The young rider was also full of praise for the show and the organisers’ decision to hold an under-25s class, which was sponsored by Equerry Horse Feeds.

“I think it’s fantastic — it gives guys like us a chance at these kind of shows,” he said.

“The only way they are going to keep progressing the sport is to give [younger riders] the experience we need and this is the only way to be doing it.”

Course designer Alan Wade’s track proved influential, with only three combinations out of 24 starters finishing the first round on zero and the top five progressing to the jump-off.

Oliver, 15, made the save of the day aboard Lady Harris and Lady Kirkham’s agile grey Hello Disckoboy DN after a miscommunication at the water tray in the jump-off — but still jumped clear — and enjoyed a smoother final round with Graham Fletcher and Judy Peploe’s KBIS Caicos.

“It’s more than I could have hoped for to be second and third,” he said.

Millie Allen and Quinu De Pravia were unlucky to clip two fences after a foot-perfect first round to finish fourth, with Joe Tricket and One Two Watch 11 also rolling a couple of poles to finish in fifth place.

‘A great start’

A huge field came forward for the first CSI4* class of the show, which was won by James Smith and new ride Simply Splendid.

Less than a second split the top six in the 1.40m two-phase contest, sponsored by Gornall Equestrian, with James pipping Italy’s Emanuele Gaudiano and Kingston van het Eikenhof into second place by 0.02 seconds.

“It’s great to start the show like this, I hadn’t actually planned [to go for it] — I started off jumping and he was jumping nice, so I did a couple of nice turns at the end and it worked out well, he jumped fantastic,” said James.

“It was a nice course for the first day to get the horses into the ring and jumping, there were a couple of options to turn back in the jump-off, which made it a bit [of a competition].

“I’ve had him for four months now and he is getting better all the time.”

The gelding, who is owned by Elizabeth Robson, had his first international win under James at Lier two weeks ago.

“He was produced by Sammy-Jo Coffin and did well with her, he is a really nice horse and I’m lucky to have him,” added James, who spent six weeks jumping the horse in Vilamoura to build a partnership with him.

“Since we have come back from there it feels like I’ve really gelled with him.”

Dujardin shines

Charlotte Dujardin and her rising star Florentina VI topped the Equitop Myoplast inter I freestyle with a huge score of 81.94%.

“For the first time ever she was a bit spooky,” said Charlotte.

“She was a little on edge, but she’s still a young mare — she’s only eight and has not done a great deal, so I am really pleased with her.”

8 things you need to look out for at the Liverpool International Horse Show

The Liverpool International Horse Show (LIHS) takes place for the fourth consecutive year at the Echo Arena, the city’s premier entertainment venue, from 28-31 December. The four-day show has six sessions, including one on New Year’s Eve, and combines top class sport with live music and spectacular family entertainment.

Competition

1. As well as the main show jumping classes, which include the Liverpool International grand prix, the Puissance and knockout competitions, the crowd will have the chance to witness entertainment in the form of the Shetland Pony Grand National, a nail-biting display from the Arenacross UK Freestyle MX Crew and Phoenix, an equestrian acrobatic demonstration brought to you by Giles Fortier.

2. The New Year’s Eve session will have the addition of music from Rick Parfitt Jr and the RPJ Band and will also feature fireworks and pyrotechnics. Packages which include food, drink and a ticket to watch the show are available for this session.

3. Olympic champion Charlotte Dujardin will feature in the freestyle dressage to music class on the opening night, while the stars of the future will be in action throughout the week in the amateur pony show jumping classes.

4. The LIHS features myriad equestrian and lifestyle brands in its two-floor shopping village which is situated adjacent to the warm up arena. With everything from jewellery to garden furniture and clothing to herbal creams on sale there is bound to be something to suit your taste. Familiar brands from the equestrian world will also be in attendance.

Kids Zone

5. If you are attending the show with children be sure to pay a visit to the new kids zone, located on the upper galleria, which features the chance to ride an AP McCoy Equiciser, as well as offering face painting, food and drink and various other activities to keep the youngsters amused.

British riders out in force at Liverpool International Horse Show

Showjumping fans can look forward to seeing some of their favourite British riders out in force at this year’s Liverpool International Horse Show later this month (28-31 December).

Competing at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, fans can catch a glimpse of John and Michael Whitaker who will ride alongside Robert Smith, William Funnell, Harry Charles and Laura Renwick as they battle it out for a place in the hotly-anticipated grand prix taking place on New Year’s Eve. The fences stand at 1.60m with Longines world ranking points and a share of the €75,000 prize pot up for grabs.

Irish riders Billy Twomey, Shane Breen, Anthony Condon, Michael Duffy and Conor Swail are also in the lineup alongside international riders Felicie Bertrand from France, Tobias Meyer from Germany and Andrew Kocher of the United States.

The crowd-favourite puissance on Sunday (30 December) will see experienced riders David Simpson, Mikey Pender, James Smith, Nano Healy and Michael Whyte among the startlist to take on the famous big red wall. The 2017 top prize was shared by British riders Holly Smith and Louse Saywell and Irish rider Christopher Megahey, who all went the full five rounds leaving the wall intact at 2.2m.

There are plenty of ways of indulging your love of all things equestrian this December, whether you fancy having a blast on a tinsel ride or snuggling up watching Olympia on the red button…

1. Leave your own horse at home and head to Windsor Great Park, where you can snuggle up under a cosy rug and enjoy a magical Christmas carriage ride round the beautiful grounds. 2. Explore the gorgeous Cotswolds countryside on horseback. 3. Yorkshire is known as ‘God’s own country’ and there’s no better way to enjoy the view than from the back of a horse. 4. Entering its fourth year, the Liverpool International Horse Show takes place at Liverpool’s Echo Arena from 28-31 December. There’s also live music from Rick Parfitt Junior, a Shetland Grand National and much more.

At the end of each year, the Liverpool International Horse Show (28-31 December), offers world class sport live music and spectacular family entertainment. There is something for everyone, including dressage, showjumping, great shopping plus so much more and now is the time to get your Liverpool International Horse Show tickets.

A variety of tickets are available prior to the show at the Liverpool Echo Arena, details of which can be found below.

Prices of Liverpool International Horse Show tickets

Ticket prices depend on the day you wish to attend and whereabouts you would like to sit. Top price seats, which are padded with the best view and include a gallery badge, command over £35 more in cost than the lowest priced tickets, where seats are in slightly less desirable locations. Discounts are also available for children under 14 years.

The show gets underway on Saturday 28 December. Seats for this day cost between £27.50 and £65, or £16-39.50 for children.

The tickets for the remainder of the show’s afternoon and evening performances range between £12 and £79 for the lowest to top priced tickets. Afternoon performances kick off at 1pm with doors to the shopping village opening at 9am. Evening performances start at 7pm.

You can upgrade your tickets if you are interested in any of Liverpool’s ‘An Audience With’ sessions. Those taking part in these sessions include Mary King, Oliver Townend, Geoff Billington, Wocket Woy and the Pwoducer, Carl Hester and Richard Davison and This Esme. These upgrades cost £12.50 for adults and £7.50 for children. You can also upgrade your ticket if you would like to add a champagne reception to your Liverpool experience. Before every evening show at 5pm an exclusive champagne reception and meet and greet session with an official course walk will take place in the iconic arena. These are £30 for each adult and £20 for children.

Valegro to make guest appearance at major British show

Dressage world record holder Valegro will make a star appearance at the Theraplate UK Liverpool International Horse Show.

The multiple Olympic gold medallist will parade at the Echo Arena on the first evening of the show (28 December) to a commentary recalling his career highlights.

“We are thrilled that Carl [Hester], and Valegro’s joint owners Roly Luard and Anne Barrot, have agreed to bring him along, he is a legend and superstar and it is a rare chance for fans to get to see him in the flesh,” said show president Nina Barbour.

“Since Valegro’s retirement from competing around the world, Carl and the team have kept him fit and well and it will be great to see him on the night.”

Charlotte and Carl will be hosting a signing and meet and greet session before the show.

Charlotte will also be competing in the inter I freestyle class that evening, riding the talented mare Florentina VI.

“Having competed at Liverpool International last year it is great to be returning and to partner Florentina in such an electric arena will be fantastic,” said Charlotte.

Carl and Charlotte to compete and meet fans at Liverpool

Dressage stars Carl Hester and Charlotte Dujardin have been confirmed to appear at the opening night of the Theraplate UK Liverpool International Horse Show.

Charlotte will be competing in the Equitop Myoplast inter I freestyle riding her talented grey mare Florentina VI. The partnership has some strong form behind it this year, winning both the prix st georges and inter I freestyle small tour at Bolesworth International in June.

Carl will be joining Charlotte for rider signings and a meet and greet session during the show, which takes place at the Echo Arena (December 28 to 31).

“Having competed at Liverpool International last year it is great to be returning, and to partner Florentina in such an electric arena will be fantastic,” Charlotte said.

There will also be several leading para riders on the start list, including Paralympic, World and European gold medallist Sophie Wells, Nicky Barker and Lisa Marriott.

Show president Nina Barbour said: “We are delighted to have Carl and Charlotte returning to the show and to be hosting top-class dressage once again.

“We can always rely on Charlotte to provide a masterclass when it comes to competition riding.

Major UK show welcomes new title sponsor, plus other sponsorship news

TheraPlate UK has been revealed as the title sponsor of the 2018 Liverpool International Horse Show.

The company will also support the grand prix, which takes place as part of the New Year’s Eve finale at the CSI4* show.

TheraPlate is a platform that comes in a range of sizes and is designed to be stood on by horses, dogs and humans.

It uses a low-amplitude orbital motion to aid rehabilitation and sports conditioning, by causing muscles to rhythmically contract and release.

“Liverpool is still a relatively new show but in this our fourth year, having such a well-respected brand as our title sponsor continues to cement our reputation as a world class show,” said show director Nina Barbour.

“We attract many of the best riders in the world who are passionate about the wellbeing of their horses. I have trialled the TheraPlate on my own horses, and have been very impressed by the results. It’s great to have TheraPlate UK on board.”

The company will exhibit at the show and can also be found in the sponsors’ area, close to the stables, so riders can try the device.

Sir Peter O’Sullevan Charitable Trust

The trust is the first major sponsor of a new initiative to help those who have fallen on hard times find employment in the racing industry.

The Bridge of Hope (Project Racing) is a not-for-profit enterprise founded by Tory MP George Freeman and childhood friend James Fellowes.

The initiative’s aim is to “provide renewed hope to those who have taken a tumble in life through a meaningful new career in horseracing”.

Nigel Payne, administrator and trustee of the trust, added it is a “brilliant concept and one Peter would have loved to support”.

“There is little doubt that a shortage of staff will offer a major threat to our industry over the next few years, so a scheme such as this is absolutely vital for the future,” he said.

“The scheme has been well thought out and if we, as an Industry, really get behind it, who knows what could be achieved.”

Voltaire Design

The saddle manufacturer is the new title sponsor for the under-25 British showjumping championship at Olympia.

The class, which will feature 24 invited riders, will be held as part of the morning performance on 21 December.

Matt Tarrant, general manager at Voltaire Design UK, said the company is “proud and privileged” to sponsor the class.

“Supporting this prestigious championship helps to provide a unique opportunity to enable Britain’s future elite showjumpers to showcase their talent in the UK’s leading international arena,” he added.

Olympia, the London International Horse Show, runs from 17 to 23 December.

TopSpec

The feed company has signed a sponsorship deal with top German eventer Julia Krajewski.

“I am delighted to have secured sponsorship from TopSpec and am very much looking forward to promoting the brand throughout Europe,” said Julia.

“I hope to compete in the UK as much as work and training allows, the events are superb and it will be good to support TopSpec on those visits.”

TopSpec’s Katy Mickle added the company is “very pleased” Julia has joined its team of sponsored riders.

“She is very talented and also understands how horses should be fed and the results correct feeding can lead to,” added Ms Mickle.

AP McCoy’s daughter set to give the Whitakers a run for their money

If young Eve McCoy is anything like her 20-time champion jockey father Tony “AP” McCoy, the mini major showjumping class at Liverpool International Horse Show in December is set to be a high-octane affair.

The 11-year-old, who is already a keen showjumper, is to line up alongside 13 rivals, each of whom will be paired with one of the top riders in the country — John Whitaker, Laura Renwick and Matt Sampson to name a few — to compete in a relay race over the coloured fences, all riding in fancy dress. The class is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the show.

“I was told I had to be in Liverpool by 30 December — it just shows you how things change in your life when you start getting bossed around by your 11-year-old daughter!” said AP McCoy, who retired from racing in 2015 and now finds himself “being dragged to shows and mucking out ponies”.

AP rode a record 4,358 winners in his career and was crowned champion jockey 20 consecutive times, winning the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award in 2010. He was knighted in 2016.

AP, his wife Chanelle and son Archie will all be in Liverpool on the Sunday to cheer home the family’s new superstar.

“We’ve planned Christmas around it,” said Chanelle. “We have no expectations — Eve does, of course. But I think it’s a brilliant experience for kids to feel the pressure of the big day when they are young. It really prepares you for later in life and when you do go into the working world, it helps if you know these emotions already.”

How high?! 10 puissance facts you really need to know

The puissance is one of the most famous showjumping competitions in the world, designed to push both horse and rider to their ultimate limits as they clear a huge red wall.

Accuracy and power are key as there is no room for error from either the horse or rider when jumping at such vast heights. The starting height can vary and the wall is raised after each round. The winner is the horse and rider combination that clears the wall at the greatest height in the final round.

If there is more than one combination left after the final jump-off stage, then the first prize is shared.

While spectators and riders alike love the thrill of the puissance, did you know these 10 interesting facts about the famous big red wall?

1. Puissance means “power” in French, which is certainly an apt description of the brave horses who jump over such an enormous obstacle.

2. It has more than a century of tradition behind it. A puissance competition was held at the 1900 Olympic Games in Paris.

3. The wall is built out of hollow red “bricks” made out of wood. This is to make it safer for the horse and rider, as they easily fall off the wall if knocked.

4. The puissance is a development of the traditional equestrian high jump competition, which consists of a single, slightly sloping brush fence topped with wooden rails.

5. Nick Skelton and Lastic (pictured below) set the UK high jump record in 1978 (before the modern red wall design), clearing 7ft 7” (2.32m). It took three attempts but, 39 years later, Nick’s record still stands.

6. The world puissance record is held by Germany’s Franke Sloothaak, who cleared 7ft 10 1/2in (2.40m) at Chaudfontaine in Belgium in 1991 riding Optiebeurs Golo. Clearing this height, Franke broke his own previous record of 2.35m, which he set on Leonardo.

7. The youngest ever winner of the Olympia puissance is William Whitaker, who won it aged 18 in 2008, riding Insultech Leonardo.

8. Robert Whitaker holds the bareback puissance record after he and Waterstone jumped 2.12m without a saddle at the Stockholm International Horse Show in November 2011.

9. The Whitaker family have a great record at the big red wall, with John Whitaker winning the most number of puissance competitions at the Olympia Horse Show. Robert Whitaker has won over 20 puissance competitions and 13 consecutively on the impressive chestnut Finbarr

10. The world record for the highest ever jump by a horse and rider, stands at a whopping 8ft 1” (2.47m). This was set by Captain Alberto Larraguibel Morales riding Huaso ex-Faithfull, in Chile in 1949. This amazing feat of athleticism took two years of training and three attempts on the day — Captain Larraguibel and Huaso fell after hitting the top rail on their second try, but they landed the jump on their third attempt, and the record still stands to this day.

‘Equestrian art, fire, music, lights and special effects’: the performance making its world premier in the UK

While no one wants to think about December just yet, the announcement that Gilles Fortier will be performing the world premier of the equestrian spectacle “Phoenix” at Liverpool International Horse Show (28 – 31 December) might just get you in the mood.

Gilles Fortier is the creator and artistic director behind the equestrian acrobatic performance company Zarkam which he founded in 1996. The company has been bringing thrilling equestrian performances around Europe for over 20 years. The performances incorporate ancient horsemanship techniques through dance and theatre combined with special effects.

H&H spoke to Gilles Fortier’s son Thomas about the family business and how it feels to be debuting Phoenix at Liverpool International Horse Show.

“My father started riding at the age of six. He began with a classical career (jumping, cross, dressage) then he turned to the medieval show stunt work, he became a blacksmith farrier then he began his career as a self-taught equestrian artist in 1996.

“I have always followed my father, since very young, in all the shows. I really took a place in the company, as a dancer and acrobat artist and director essentially in 2008 with the creation of several shows for summer seasons in the south of France.”

All of the horses used in Gilles Fortier’s displays are either Portuguese or Spanish and live normal lives when they are not performing.

“These breeds are favourable to the performances because of their mentality, memory capacity and magnificent presence. The horses are either ridden or we take them for a walk in the forest and they are turned out in paddocks.”

The Gilles Fortier training method is based on classical riding and the horses are slowly introduced to effects used in the performances.

“Our training techniques are simple, classic training is the basis. Then, little by little, we use our personal techniques like belt reins work, to free our hands and to be able to use stage fire accessories for example. Finally, we present the special effects that we use (fire, powder, smoke) without any constraint. We give them the necessary time to understand these different elements.”

The Zarkam business places family at the forefront, which includes welcoming other artistic riders into the fold.

“We perform as a family with other artist riders. My two sisters, Virginie and Megan, are riders, and my mother, Sylvie is in charge of logistics and administration. Other artists such as Sylvain Albella or Marine Laurent are also part of the family. It’s important for us to have that team spirit there.”

The down-to-earth family have a fantastic working relationship even when there are bumps along the road.

“Even if work predominates, the good atmosphere remains the key element. We all get along very well, even if sometimes there are some storms! It’s normal. Everyone injects their own experience and their own ideas and we amalgamate the whole.”

Spectators attending Liverpool International Horse Show can expect a thrilling show.

“Phoenix will be a 15 minute performance combining equestrian art, fire, music, lights and special effects for the sole intention of awakening the emotions of the spectators. It will be a series of different scenes with an epic and lively rhythm.

“We are really happy to perform on the wonderful stage of the Liverpool International Horse Show. We will invest 100% to present a great show full of emotions. It’s a stage that will allow us to create beautiful magical moments.”

Thomas enjoys every moment he spends with horses.

“What motivates me is to highlight all the sides and knowledge that horses can have. They are magnificent creatures that are full of beauty and emotions. But galloping in the wild, I must say that it is very enjoyable and provides a real sense of freedom!”

Organisers of the Liverpool International Horse Show say they are more determined than ever to run a top-class event after the “heartbreak” of last year’s devastating fire.

Some 1,400 cars were destroyed and the final session of the 2017 show cancelled when the car park next to the Echo Arena caught fire on New Year’s Eve.

Show president Nina Barbour said the financial implications meant she and her team had to think “long and hard about the future of our show”.

“But with help from the arena, together with the tremendous support we’ve had from our spectators, the equestrian community and everyone involved from the city of Liverpool, we have been able to regroup and go ahead,” she said.

Ms Barbour added that cancelling the final session was “absolutely devastating” for organisers and supporters, many of whom “suffered a great deal of heartbreak” as they lost cars and possessions.

“We were so grateful for the tremendous work by the Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service,” she added. “The professionalism of our team and the staff at the arena meant our emergency plan was put into operation and everyone, including all 150 horses stabled on the ground floor of the car park, were safely evacuated.

“Everyone has worked so hard to establish the show and we are determined, now more than ever, that it will be one of the world’s premier equestrian events. We are looking forward to being back in Liverpool and we’re planning to make 2018 the best show yet especially as we are the climax to Liverpool 2018.

“As the show was sadly cut short before the climax of the competition, Billy Twomey remains the only rider to have won the Liverpool International grand prix and we look forward to welcoming him back to the Echo Arena this year.”

Liverpool mayor Joe Anderson said that having worked with organisers to ensure the show stayed in Liverpool, he was “delighted that Nina and the team have kept faith with the city”.

London 2012 Olympic team gold medallist Peter Charles, who was born in Liverpool and was on hand to launch the 2018 show this week, praised the support shown by the equestrian world.

Nina Barbour is one amazing organiser. Liverpool International Horse Show hosted dressage for the first time and what a success it was (I was lucky enough to win, too).

Nina’s ambition is to attract the elite of the sport. She likes to aim high, is brimming with ideas, and the arenas at both Bolesworth, which she also organises, and Liverpool lend themselves to dressage. She says there’s no lid on what they can do and while she’s not alone in aiming to glamorise our sport and grow its following, I would put money on Nina being able to achieve her ambition.

It’s great that Royal Windsor has secured a new headline sponsor, Al Shira’aa, for the CDI4* — perfect for the show’s 75th anniversary this year.

Think before typing

British Dressage (BD) has a social media policy which is part of its members’ code of conduct. It is comprehensive and the BD Rule Book makes it very clear that while BD “recognises that the internet provides everyone with the ability to participate in interactive discussions and to share information”, members should use social media responsibly and with respect.

I particularly like the clause that reads: “Only post comments about a BD person that are respectful and which the poster would say directly to that person.” This obviously does not cover posters who are not members of BD, however, and I have recently been appalled to see quite a few young riders being shredded on social media.

When will people learn that cyberbullying can be as damaging as bullying in person? The latter was highlighted in the #notonmyyard campaign launched in 2016 and taken up by the British Equestrian Federation (BEF) as well as many prominent members of the horse world. Ireland’s Abi Hutton wrote an impassioned plea on the subject of cyberbullying earlier this month, highlighting the message “think before you type”. But, on it goes.

If an offender is a BD member, the social media code kicks in. If you are the victim, you can call the office and they will take it up as they have successfully done a few times. While they can’t prevent it, they can calm things down. Knowing BD will do its best for members who are subjected to online abuse is comforting. But if the abuser is not a member, the situation is very different.

As dressage riders, we live and breathe a subjective sport and sometimes opinions are proffered, whether wanted or not. Online bullying has been responsible for deaths, as in the tragic case of Australian 14-year-old Amy “Dolly” Irving, and I know of one European young rider who was taken off social media by her family after online trolling led to, at best, her wanting to stop riding and, at worst, suicidal thoughts. This should never happen.

Banish the blues

Planning for the year ahead brings renewed optimism, so let’s look forward. The BD regional pages reveal a host of opportunities for youth, senior and para riders. Could you represent your region on a team or at the home international?

The BD regional officers do a tremendous job putting on training and social events as well, so look up your region and get involved. Let’s focus more on giving a leg up and less on putting down, and get back to loving our sport.

‘I’ve never seen a fire like it’: Liverpool display stunt rider injured in evacuation

The leader of the stunt display team who was injured as the Echo Arena car park burned has praised the response of organisers and emergency services to the incident.

Sunday evening’s (31 December) Liverpool International Horse Show performance had to be called off as a result of the blaze, in which more than 1,000 cars were destroyed.

Zana Cousins, of the Stampede Stunt Company which put on the Luminoso act every day of the show, said she and her team were still in costume from the afternoon performance when news of the fire, which is thought to have started in one vehicle, reached them.

“It escalated so quickly,” she told H&H. “It came through on the radio that there was a fire, and it was one car at first; I couldn’t believe how quickly it got out of control.”

Zana, who runs the Centre of Horseback Combat in Hemel Hempstead with her husband Karl, said the six horses who took part in the act – which involved pyrotechnics – were stabled on the dockside rather than on lower floors of the car park, unlike the showjumpers.

“We thought that would be ok,” she said.

“Some of the showjumping horses started going in those stables. We had international horses mixing with the ponies from the Shetland Pony Grand National, who were doubling up to make room, as it was raining outside too.

“But very quickly, the smoke started billowing in. We opened the back windows to let it out, then they said: ‘Get the horses out’. All the horses could hear was explosion after explosion. I’ve never seen a fire like it.”

The members of Zana’s team had been put up in a hotel very close to the arena, which was cordoned off.

“We got the horses on the lorry and were told to go,” she said.

“But I didn’t have anything; we were still in costume, I didn’t have my phone or wallet; I didn’t have hay or water for the horses; I didn’t even have my wallet, for money to buy diesel.”

Zana and one of the other riders went back to the hotel to collect their belongings, but by the time they got there and tried to return, the area was cordoned off.

“It was dark and raining and people were panicking and screaming, ‘Get back, get back!’” she said.

“It had all been closed off behind us and we couldn’t get out. We saw the big fence and climbed it but there were spikes on the top and my hand got impaled as I jumped down.”

Zana suffered damage to tendons and nerves and is due to be operated on tomorrow (3 January) but will be out of action for months.

“I had my New Year’s Eve in hospital,” she said, adding that members of the stunt team had to make numerous return journeys to Liverpool to try to recover equipment worth thousands of pounds.

“But everyone dealt with it so well,” she added. “The police and fire service were great and [show president] Nina Barbour has been brilliant. I thoroughly feel for her because it was a fantastic event and it’s not her fault, this was the car park.

“And everyone was helping everyone; people offering stables, Aintree EC taking horses in, everyone asking what was needed, it was wonderful to see.”

‘Nothing short of remarkable’

In a statement on the show’s Facebook page, Ms Barbour said yesterday: “I would like to express my immense thanks and gratitude to the emergency services, the Echo Arena staff, riders, grooms and support staff, the general public and the city of Liverpool.

“The understanding of everybody who was preparing to celebrate New Year’s Eve and was left in Liverpool with no transport was nothing short of remarkable, and the offers of help and support from people – they ran into the hundreds – for anyone who needed assistance will never be forgotten.

“All people and horses are safe and secure, and I thank spectators, riders and support teams for their understanding and co-operation.

“I am very proud of our own teams who pulled together in the most demanding of circumstances, and managed to quickly and calmly evacuate all horses from the venue in a safe and controlled manner.

“We are not going to let go of what we achieved in the first five sessions of the show, and we will be back to do it again next December.”

A major fire in a multi-storey car park close to the Echo Arena has forced the Liverpool International Horse Show to be cancelled and the venue evacuated.

This afternoon’s CSI4* 1.45m speed class was coming to a close when the decision to halt the show was made.

Horse & Hound’s show reporter Margaret Shaw said: “Louise Saywell had just come into the arena for her round when she was asked to return to the gate. Then all the horses from the collecting ring were brought into the arena.

“Some horses were stabled on the lower level of the multi-storey car park, where the fire was on the upper floors, and these were evacuated into the main arena or into the stables on the dock side.”

Merseyside Fire and Rescue said in a statement: “Firefighters are attending a fire at a multi-storey car park at Kings Dock, in Liverpool.

“Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service was called at 4.42pm and crews were on the scene at 4.50pm.

“Twelve fire engines are in attendance and crews, wearing breathing apparatus, are tackling the fire using a 52 mil hose.

“The fire is believed to involve a number of vehicles.”

A statement from the show’s organisers, issued around 7.15pm, said: “It is with considerable regret that organisers of the Liverpool International Horse Show announce that tonight’s performance at the Echo Arena has been cancelled.

“Due to a serious fire in a multi-storey car park near to the Echo Arena, and on advice from the emergency services, the show’s final session will not proceed today.

“All people and horses are safe and secure, and show organisers have thanked spectators, riders and support teams for their understanding and co-operation during this ongoing situation.”

The organisers had initially hoped they might be able to reschedule the final performance of the show to be held on Monday instead, but it was decided that this would not be possible.

Thrilling Puissance at Liverpool can’t split top three riders

Holly Smith, Louise Saywell and Chris Megahey went the full five rounds in the Equitop Myoplast Puissance at the Liverpool International Horse Show on Saturday night (30 December) to share first place when Quality Old Joker, Dassler and Seapatrick Cruise Cavalier all left the 2.2m (7’3”) wall intact.

Seven combinations jumped initial clears in the competition in front of a delighted crowd.

Ireland’s Thomas O’Brien went out in the second round when Dakarla slid a brick from the wall. The field was reduced further in the third round when French rider Daniel Delsart’s ride Lord Quidam refused the wall.

The remaining five combinations took on the 7’ wall in the fourth round where Shane Breen’s chances ended when Cycloon W nudged a couple of bricks past the point of no return.

This left four top-class combinations that seemed to improve with every effort and thrive on the electric atmosphere to contest the fifth and final round.

Holly Smith’s Quality Old Joker had produced text book clears after smooth approaches to the wall over the preceding four rounds and the Irish-bred nine-year-old was spot on again, Holly punching the air with delight after a smooth landing.

“He’s a big jumping horse in his own right and he seems to think puissance classes are quite cool.

“He gets a bit tail swishy when I try to take a steady approach, so the aim was to move on and set him up a couple of strides out,” said Holly.

Louise Saywell looked to have a more difficult task with Billy Twomey’s Dassler, whose bouncy stride got stronger and faster as each round progressed.

“It’s a bit difficult to establish a rhythm with him as he doesn’t take hold of the bridle until the final approach and then it’s a case of trying to anchor him a couple of strides out,” said Louise.

Dassler again proved fairly feisty in the final round and he left a couple of bricks teetering on the brink, but they remained intact to share first place.

The 2016 winners and the most experienced puissance combination Chris Megahey and Seapatrick Cruise Cavalier continued to impress with every round and the Irish-bred chestnut gelding fairly towed his rider into the 7’2” wall.

“That’s the way he likes to go,” said Chris.

“Usually, it’s a left handed approach to the wall, but tonight it was on the right rein and it felt easier.

“When you turn that corner, he knows what’s coming and sets sail and it’s my job to find the right (take off) spot.”

It looked as though Ireland might have another rider to share the top podium place, but after never missing a beat over the previous four rounds, Anthony Condon’s ride Cavalier Rusticana said no to the wall when it reached 7’2”. Anthony immediately tipped his hat to settle for fourth place.

Showjumper put down after ‘freak accident’ at Liverpool International

A horse has been put down after a “freak accident” in this evening’s (30 December) CSI4* class at the Liverpool International Horse Show.

Sara Galotiere, a selle francais mare ridden by the Netherlands’ Sanne Thijssen, suffered an injury in the Horseware Ireland Longines ranking class.

The 11-year-old made an awkward jump over the penultimate fence, an oxer, and on landing was unable to bear weight on her off-hind leg. Sanne dismounted immediately and screens, a horse ambulance and vets were quickly on the scene.

Sara Galotiere was given “immediate expert on-site veterinary assessment and care”, show organisers said in a statement.

“Organisers of the Liverpool International Horse Show announce with a sense of deep regret and profound sadness that Sara Galotiere has been put to sleep,” the statement read.

Show president Nina Barbour added: “We offer our heartfelt and sincere condolences to Sanne, her support team, the Thijssen family and all connections of the horse.”

Sanne had been competing Sara Galotiere since March, before which she was ridden by Spain’s Carlos Lopez-Fanjul Tariere. The combination’s most recent competition was at Samorin CSI4* at the end of November.

It is the second time a horse has been put down at the show; Ireland’s Cameron Hanley’s top ride Antello Z had to be put down two years ago (1 January 2016) after he suffered a serious injury in the ring during a 1.45m class.

For the first time this year the Liverpool International Horse Show finishes on New Year’s Eve and the organisers are determined to see out 2017 and welcome 2018 in style. Read on to find out what they have in store for spectators at the Echo Arena on the biggest party night of the year.

What happens at Liverpool Horse Show on New Year’s Eve?

The equestrian entertainment

Entertainment for the evening session starts at 7.30pm with the biggest class of the week, the Hope Valley Saddlery Liverpool International Grand Prix, which will see top riders such as John Whitaker, Robert Whitaker and Billy Twomey tackling the 1.60m course.

There is just one other showjumping class on the schedule, the Knockout, where pairs of riders race against each other round a mirror image set of show jumps. This year this class has undertaken a twist as it will see boys versus girls in a ‘battle of the sexes’ competition.

Another nail-biting competition which is bound to have the crowds on the edge of their seats is the final of the Shetland Pony Grand National, which will also take place during the evening.

Other entertainment

As if the equestrian competitions aren’t enough, the evening will also feature displays from the Arenacross Freestyle MX Crew, a group of freestyle motocross riders who perform stunts while flying 40ft through the air, Luminoso, six horses and riders from Russia who will wow the crowds with their pyrotechnics and acrobatic skills, and Laserman, who will be showcasing his 3D laser light show.

The music and dancing

Music comes from 14-year-old musical theatre singer and equestrian enthusiast Beau Dermott, who rose to fame on Britain’s Got Talent, and Rick Parfitt Jnr, the son of Status Quo guitarist Rick Parfitt. Rick Parfitt Jr and the RPJ band claim to be the best party rock event band in the world and will be playing a special set as they count the crowds down to midnight.

The food

Book a table at No.10 South Dock restaurant, which is upstairs in the arena, if you are after a sit-down meal otherwise you can purchase sandwiches, snacks and light bites from the many outlets inside the venue. There are also a selection of bistros, bars, cafes and restaurants in the Albert Dock which is just outside the arena.

The booze

Champagne will be flowing in the bar next to the warm-up arena, and throughout the venue.

On the stroke of midnight

Rick Parfitt Jnr and the RPJ band will be responsible for entertaining the crowds as we say goodbye to 2017. As the new year rolls in a spectacular indoor firework display is set to dazzle the audience.

With the third running of the Liverpool International Horse Show starting next week, we spoke to some riders and spectators to find out what they think of the event…

Louise Saywell, international showjumper

“I was really pleased when I got the call to say I was in as it’s a show I want to be competing at,” says Louise. “Over the past two years, the reputation has really built up, the variety of classes and entertainment is excellent, and you don’t get many better facilities than they have. Nina [Barbour] and her team really have thought of everything.”

Yazmin Pinchen, international showjumper

“It’s one of my favourite shows. There’s something for everyone – even non-horsey people – and there’s always something going on so you don’t sit around waiting or get bored,” says Yazmin. “The atmosphere was mega and if you win there’s a podium and fireworks which is pretty special.”

Nicole Pavitt, international showjumper

“Nina has done a fantastic job, she’s ticked every box. It’s a big stadium to fill but the crowds are amazing and there’s a great atmosphere,” says Nicole. “There’s so much to see as you can watch amateurs, ponies, professionals and all the acts too. The arena is set up perfectly and the whole event is run very efficiently.”

Fiona Morear, spectator from Cheshire

“I went to the whole show last year and thought it was absolutely fabulous,” says Fiona. “It was all-round family entertainment, there were plenty of shops and eating places and there was even a quieter area upstairs where you could go and chill out.”

“My husband and I had a VIP box for the New Year’s Eve performance and it was amazing. The views were great, the acts and competition were brilliant, and we were really well looked after. The indoor fireworks were incredible, we didn’t want the night to end.”

Tamsin Jessup, spectator from Bangor

“The first year I went with family, last year I arranged a coach trip for 30 people from my riding club and this time I am going with some girlfriends – it really does suit everyone,” says Tamsin. “The quality of the riders is fantastic and it’s great to be able to watch them warming up and see what goes on behind the scenes.”

Dressage fans can look forward to seeing Carl Hester and Charlotte Dujardin compete on two of their rising equine stars at the Liverpool International Horse Show later this month (29-31 December).

Carl will make his first competitive appearance on the horse he hopes will be his 2018 World Equestrian Games (WEG) ride, Hawtins Delicato, while Charlotte will pilot one of her up-and-coming stars, the quirky En Vogue. Both Olympic gold medallists will ride in the inter I freestyle on the Friday evening.

The nine-year-old Hawtins Delicato, whom Carl owns with Anne Cory, has already achieved international small tour success with Charlotte, winning the inter I and inter I freestyle at Hickstead CDI2* this year with a score of more than 77%.

The pair also claimed the inter II title at the BD national championships in September.

However, the Diamond Hit gelding was always intended to be Carl’s ride.

“I’ve had him since he was five and have trained him and ridden him all along,” Carl told H&H. “I’ve loved watching Charlotte ride him, but I decided it was about time I got my toe in an arena and found out what he’s like in a test. The plan is for him to start his grand prix career some time after Christmas, and I would like him to also be a second horse for Charlotte next year.”

Charlotte’s own eight-year-old En Vogue, who is by Jazz, also looks to be a future star. He finished second to Mount St John Freestyle in both the prix st georges and inter I championships at the British Dressage nationals in September. However, it hasn’t been an easy journey, with Charlotte revealing that the gelding was “wild as sin” when she bought him from Sandra Biddlecombe as a project.

“He snorted like a wild thing and you couldn’t catch him in the stable. Most people would have shot him!” Charlotte told H&H.

“It hasn’t always been easy with him, but we have formed a really special partnership now and I have such high hopes for this super horse for the future,” she added on her Facebook page.

“It’s so so exciting that we continue to have incredible shows like this [Liverpool] where we can debut our horses on the big stage in front of supportive crowds.”

Carl and Charlotte will be challenged for the inter I freestyle title by British Olympic and Europeans team reserve rider Lara Butler, who will partner the Bechtolsheimers’ exciting 12-year-old Kristjan. The Polarion gelding finished third behind Mount St John Freestyle and En Vogue in the inter I freestyle at the BD nationals.

Becky Edwards is also set to compete at Liverpool with Headmore Delegate, while Kate Cowell will ride Samba Dancer. Charlie Hutton, Nicola Buchanan, Levi Hunt and Sarah Higgins are also confirmed to compete.

Dressage stars to compete at Liverpool International this year

Top dressage riders will be competing at Liverpool International Horse Show for the first time this year.

The three-day show at the Echo Arena (29-31 December) will host an inter I freestyle class on the Friday evening (29 December).

The invitational class adds to the show’s packed schedule of international showjumping and entertainment, including a Shetland Pony Grand National, live music and motocross.

“We are really looking forward to adding dressage to our busy show schedule at the Liverpool International Horse Show,” said show president Nina Barbour.

“Dressage is now such a popular sport and the inter I freestyle will work brilliantly in what is fast becoming a much sought-after arena to ride and compete in.”

Dressage was first introduced to Bolesworth International, of which Ms Barbour is also president, in 2015, with its first CDI event taking place at this year’s show. When she announced the CDI3* in February, Ms Barbour said: “We have big ambitions for dressage at Bolesworth going forwards.

“We really feel that it is important to harness the amazing legacy from the last two Olympics which has really set the sport of dressage alight and truly inspired us as a nation.”

Robert Smith celebrates birth of Harvey Smith junior

While most of the country was gearing up for some New Year merriment, showjumper Robert Smith and his new wife Raffaelle were enjoying their own celebrations, having just welcomed the birth of their new son Harvey Robert Smith.

“We’re all doing well,” Robert told H&H this week. “I’m not really a nappy changer, but I’m sure I’ll be tricked into doing it at some point!

“We didn’t know if we were expecting a boy or a girl — of course he’s named after my Dad but it was a name we both really liked, too.”

Young Harvey made a dramatic entrance — four days late — while Robert was preparing to compete in the first day’s classes at the Equestrian.com Liverpool International Horse Show.

“It was an eventful day — I was all ready to go and jump!” said 55-year-old Robert, who, after seeing the arrival of his 8lb 1oz son just after five o’clock in the afternoon, returned to the show to finish eighth in the evening’s 1.50m speed class with his mare Bavi.

The elated Warwickshire-based rider went on to secure two runner-up spots with Cimano E and Ilton and finish fourth in Monday’s grand prix riding Bavi.

Robert already has four children — Rae, Chloe, Eliza and Archie — and the birth of baby Harvey sealed a momentous month for his parents, who also tied the knot on 1 December.

Robert’s father Harvey is one of the best known showjumpers of all time, having competed at two Olympic Games and won countless grands prix. He now trains racehorses in Yorkshire with his wife Sue, winning the Grand National with Auroras Encore in 2013.

Bouncing puddings and flying turkeys: Liverpool mini major fancy dress

The mini major showjumping competition is a brilliant class to watch, as some of the country’s top young riders team up with their heroes for some high velocity jumping.

But at the Equestrian.com Liverpool International, competitors embraced the festive spirit with gusto and we saw every fancy dress costume going, from a bouncing Christmas pudding (step forward, William Funnell) to a flying Christmas turkey (guilty as charged, Guy Williams). Here are some of our absolute favourites…

1. Santa Claus is coming to town…

While Billy Twomey dressed as a snowman, his team-mate Henry Squibb and his pony are tinsel-tastic — we’d happily wear that hat all year round, we love it!

3. Mud, mud, glorious mud!

Well this is Shane Breen as you’ve (probably) never seen him before — dressed as the very dainty Helena Hippo and making a high speed appearance.

4. He had a very shiny nose

Some would even say it glows — Harry Clarke Tomlinson has found a fantastic Rudolf hat to complete his outfit.

Santa Claus (Grace Shudall Hughes) takes time out of a busy present-delivery schedule to make a pit-stop in Liverpool, teaming up with Ireland’s Michael Kearins to finish third.

We all know turkeys can’t fly, but this one — cunningly disguised as Guy Williams — certainly makes a bold attempt.

9. Santa’s little helper

Luli Loveridge joins Guy Williams to jump the quickest round of all and win the class. Great teamwork!

10. Looking angelic

Is that a halo we see above David Simpson’s head? Those wings certainly seem to have given the Irishman a boost as he helps Noora von Bulow finish fourth.

New city could be on the cards for popular new year show

The new year show has been held at the M&S Bank Arena Liverpool since its launch in 2016. It last took place in 2019 as the 2020 and 2021 editions were cancelled owing to the coronavirus pandemic.

Managing director Nina Barbour told H&H that the 2022/3 event had not been confirmed and this was “not a cancellation, because it was never planned”.

Ms Barbour confirmed to H&H that the Liverpool International Horse Show could move to a new city.

“All the time we’re actively working through what the best plan is for it,” she said.

“We’re very conscious that we had Covid and we’ve had a few stop-starts with it, so when we run it again it needs to be absolutely right and in the place where it finds its home, location and date, for good.”

“We’re fully committed to what we do within the sport. We’ve got big plans to expand the footprint of the international and have big ambitions,” she said.

“We’ve gone through the consolidation stage of Covid and we’re now ready to make that event much bigger for 2023, with a new lifestyle shopping area planned, and other plans we will announce in the next month or so.”

But they were joined by a new face, Harry Whall. The 28-year-old, competing in his first puissance competition with new ride Quality Old Joker, came close to tipping off on landing in the first round, but grew in confidence as the five rounds went on.

“That was the best buzz ever!” exclaimed the 28-year-old from Market Rasen. “It is a dream come true. I didn’t expect him to jump so high in the first round, but once I got on the right spot it was great.”

Harry bought 11-year-old Quality Old Joker, who won this class at Liverpool in 2017 and the puissance at Olympia in 2016 with former rider Holly Smith, a couple of months ago.

Holly won last night’s big class, the Horseware Ireland-sponsored 1.50m competition, on former event horse Denver, owned by Ian Dowie. The 11-year-old competed up to CCI4* level with Emilie Chandler and Constance Copestake before turning to showjumping with Holly this summer.

Tabitha Kyle’s outstanding year continued with victories in both the Wicks Group 128cm championship and the P Gowans Civil Engineering 138cm final.

BSPS supreme M&M final moves again after Liverpool cancellation

The BSPS supreme M&M final will now return to the London International Horse Show, formerly known as Olympia, to be held at the ExCel, on Monday 20 December.

The format of the competition will remain similar and members will be able to buy discounted tickets.

BSPS chairman Pat Pattinson said: “I am delighted and thankful that the organisers of the London International Horse Show have welcomed us back, especially at short notice, and we can’t wait to be part of this prestigious and fun show just before Christmas.”

“The London International Horse Show is an iconic show and one that the BSPS is proud to be a part of.”

Competitors will compete for the top 10 placings as well as the coveted best of breed awards.

The 2019 champion was Emma Burrow and her own Welsh section D gelding Dyffryngwy Sir Picasso, with the reserve spot going to Melanie and Gemma Stanford’s Highland stallion Benbreac Of Croila ridden by Matthew Cooper.

Show founder Nina Barbour said the team was “naturally devastated”.

“We can only hope that our loyal supporters understand our genuine reasons for being forced to cancel this year’s event,” she said.

“The reality of the situation is that we have to measure the risks of moving forward with an indoor event in early January, with the facts and concerns that we currently face whilst having to carefully negotiate the ongoing uncertainty relating to this pandemic.

All Liverpool International Horse Show ticket buyers will be contacted, and all will be eligible for full refunds.
