Former top event horse Lenamore was put down on Saturday (28 January) at the age of 30.

New Zealand rider Caroline Powell, who rode the grey son of Sea Crest to his greatest successes, described him as “a little horse with an enormous heart”.

Lenamore completed Badminton seven times in a row with Caroline, finishing in the top 12 five times. But the partnership’s greatest day came at Burghley in 2010, when they completed on their dressage score of 38.7 to win.

The gelding, bred by National Hunt trainer Ted Walsh – father of former top jockey Ruby Walsh – in Ireland, evented with his owner Lexi Jackson up to three-star (now CCI4*-L) level. She handed the ride over to Caroline in 2004 and the partnership was an instant success.

They represented New Zealand at two Olympic Games — Hong Kong and London, winning team bronze at the latter — and the World Equestrian Games in Aachen, 2006.

During his illustrious career, the diminutive Lenamore amassed 2,321 British Eventing points. The 2012 Olympics was his final event and he was retired from eventing the following spring.

Lenamore

The 2010 Burghley winner, who also completed Badminton seven times in a row, finishing in the top 12 five times, retired to the hunting field when he finished competing prior to the 2013 eventing season. Earlier this year, US rider, Theresa Sanders, secured a day’s hunting with the Warwickshire on Lenamore (pictured) thanks to a successful bid of £1,100 in a charity auction and the generosity of his owner Lexi Jackson.

Denman and Big Buck’s

This pair of former National Hunt stars, who were both trained by Paul Nicholls, retired to the hunting field, before being fully retired earlier this year. Denman (left), the 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, was ridden by Charlotte Alexander, while Big Buck’s, a hurdling hero who won 18 races in a row, has been hunted by Lucy Tucker — the pair pictured here with the Blackmore and Sparkford Vale in 2014.

Bob’s Worth

Charlie and Tracy Vigors, who run Hillwood Stud in Wiltshire, took on former National Hunt star Bob’s Worth following his retirement from racing in 2016. The 12-year-old, who was trained by Nicky Henderson, won the Hennesy Gold Cup in 2012 and the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2013. Chance Du Roy

The Philip Hobbs-trained 2013 Becher Chase winner, who was also sixth in the 2014 Grand National, is pictured here autumn hunting a few weeks ago in Somerset with Laura Parker.

Another Breakfast

This 15-year-old was evented successfully to three-star level with H&H blogger Rosie Fry before he was retired. He is pictured autumn hunting a few weeks ago with the Cattistock.

Lebowski

This quirky horse was evented to four-star level by Beanie Sturgis. Before retiring in September, ‘Rotter’, who was bred for polo, was 11th at Badminton in 2016 and notched another two cross-country clears at this event this year and in 2013. He can now be found enjoying his second career with the Beaufort and is seen here being held by Beanie’s daughter, Ruby.

Menorah

Menorah, who was trained by Philip Hobbs, was retired from National Hunt racing in March this year. He won the Oaksey Chase at Sandown four times and can now be found hunting with his former jockey, Richard Johnson, with whom the 12-year-old also lives.

130 Beluga

After serving for many years with the King’s Troop, this mare, called 130 Beluga, is now loving her new hunting job with her loaner, Natalie Poulton

From four-star eventers to famous racehorses, here are a few of the equine celebs and other famous horses we’ve spotted on our hunting travels this season.

Lenamore

The hugely popular 2010 Burghley winner and Olympic bronze medallist has taken to hunting like a duck to water. He enjoys regular days with the Warwickshire with his owner, Lexi Jackson (not pictured).

Finian’s Rainbow

Winner of the Queen Mother Champion Chase at Cheltenham and the Melling Chase at Aintree in 2012, this big, handsome bay is enjoying hunting with the Heythrop with Becky Blandford and has had a go at a couple of hunt rides this season, piloted by Luke Morgan.

Lebowski

Beanie Sturgis’ four-star event horse, 11th at Badminton in 2016, loves his days with the Beaufort during the winter.

Annacotty

The 2015 Paddy Power Gold Cup winner loves the odd day’s hunting to freshen him up before a race. Eventer Phoebe Buckley recently had a great day hedge-hopping with the Old Berks on him, and said: “He behaves beautifully. He loves hunting and watches the hounds non-stop, and it keeps him jolly and sweet between races.”

Starry Night

Multiple HOYS winner Starry Night was recently pictured in Horse & Hound hunting with the East Kent with West Street, ridden by Shelley Stuchbury.

Don Poli

Top Irish National Hunt horse Don Poli – winner of the 2015 RSA Chase at the Cheltenham Festival and the 2015 Grade One Lexus Chase at Leopardstown – has been seen looking very happy with the Meath this season, ridden by Emily MacMahon.

Balthazar King

When trained by Philip Hobbs, Balthazar King won the 2014 Glenfarclas Cross-Country Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, as well as many other big races. Now he’s enjoying hunting with the Tedworth with Izzi Beckett, wife of Flat trainer Ralph Beckett. Izzi says: “Balthazar King has adapted really well to his new life. He has taken to hunting like a natural. He loves watching hounds work and has impeccable manners. Needless to say, his jumping is outstanding!”

Silviniaco Conti

Winner of six Grade One chases, including the King George VI Chase at Kempton in 2013 and 2014, Silviniaco Conti is one of many horses from Paul Nicholls’ Ditcheat yard who enjoy the odd day’s hunting with the Blackmore and Sparkford Vale.

Merlot’s Magic

Vittoria Panizzon’s eventer, winner of the 2016 CIC3* at Strzegom in Poland, can be seen flying over some of the Ledbury’s biggest hedges.

“He has jumped some of the biggest hedges [joint-master] David Redvers has ever led us over, always up front,” says Vittoria. “He’s a little legend – thanks to his hunting, he loves big three-star tracks in the mud, like Bramham and Chatsworth. He’s a real ‘family pony’ and anyone can ride him; he’s done open team chasing, fun rides, and been autumn hunting, all alongside his eventing career.”

A day’s hunting on Burghley winner Lenamore contributed to the Warwickshire Hunt raising a total of £5,000 for the air ambulance.

American Theresa Sanders secured the top lot with a telephone bid from the USA of £1,100. She flew over at the beginning of December and hunted the 23-year-old grey, who has been a regular with the Warwickshire with owner Lexi Jackson since he retired from eventing.

Theresa said: “I had the most fabulous time out on my fairytale ride with Lenamore. The entire day was magical.

“Immediately upon getting into the saddle, I was able to tell that he’s one in a million. His way of going, collection, breathtaking trot and beautiful gallop clearly showed why he is an adored, true Olympian. 

“I feel so very fortunate to have had this experience and will always remember, partly with disbelief that it actually happened. What an amazing day — dreams really do come true! Thank you to Lexi and the Jackson family for making ‘Ed’ available for this amazing experience.”

Theresa decided to bid on the day on Lenamore, who represented New Zealand at both the 2008 and 2012 Olympics under Caroline Powell, winning team bronze at the latter, after recovering from a broken ankle that left her out of the saddle for more than two months.

She said: “While feeling frustrated and miserable that I wasn’t able to ride, I saw the H&H piece about the auction and knew immediately I was going to go for it. I had followed Lenamore’s career over the years and could not believe that I might have the chance to ride this amazing horse. I really needed something to look forward to and thought to myself, ‘I’m going to do this!’”

Theresa describes herself as a “passionate foxhunter” and has been a member of the Shakerag hunt in Georgia, USA.

She stayed with Lexi Jackson and her husband Henry.

Lexi said: “She was charming, and we had a lovely day’s hunting. Theresa rode Ed beautifully and both horse and rider had a great time and even jumped some hedges.”

Carrie Tucker, chairman of the hunt’s auction of promises committee, and hunt chairman Sam Butler presented the £5,000 cheque to Jo Payne of the Warwickshire Air Ambulance at a meet at Honington Hall.

Jo said: “I am delighted to accept the very generous donation made by Warwickshire Hunt, who have supported the charity since its inception in 2003. The hunt members understand that because we are entirely funded by donations, this essential life-saving service is vital to the rural community.”

From time to time you have that moment when you spot someone completely out of context and can’t put a name to their face. It’s that teacher in the supermarket situation.

In an equestrian context, it may have happened to you on the hunting field — but with a horse rather than a rider. Some of our biggest equine heroes — from a double Badminton winner to a four-time Cheltenham World Hurdle winner — have taken to hunting in their retirement.

Equine superstars who’ve hunted in their retirement

1. Lenamore, eventing

The 21-year-old former eventer has been spotted out autumn hunting with the Warwickshire. “Everyone thought I was completely bonkers, but he was actually very well behaved,” said owner Lexi Jackson. “He loved it!”

2. Denman, racing

The 2008 Gold Cup winner has had a second lease of life hunting and team chasing under Charlotte Alexander. Denman had a life-threatening blood and bone infection in October 2012, but has since found a new career on the hunting field.

3. Supreme Rock, eventing

Pippa Funnell’s double Badminton winner was still seen out with the Grafton at the age of 24. A visitor famously once told his owner Emma Pitt that she should “try eventing him”.

4. Big Buck’s, racing

Andy Stewart’s four-time Cheltenham World Hurdle winner, who retired last season, was out autumn hunting with Lucy Tucker last month.

5. Little Tiger, eventing

Phoebe Buckley’s 14.3hh Little Tiger spent her life after eventing hunting and team chasing, having been retired at the age of 16. The gutsy mare even came third in the Melton Hunt Ride in 2012.

Popular eventing grey Lenamore — who won Burghley at the age of 17— has now taken to the hunting field.

The New Zealand team stalwart, who is now 21, has been out autumn hunting with the Warwickshire and his owner Lexi Jackson.

“Everyone thought I was completely bonkers but he was actually very well behaved,” Lexi told H&H. “ I think it was probably ignorance. Everyone warned me —which I already knew — that he will probably be worse next time.”

Lexi is planning to take him out again this Saturday (11 September) and will then see what the ground conditions are like before deciding whether to do anymore with him this season.

“He really enjoyed himself,” Lexi said. “We even jumped a hunt jump. It would have been very embarrassing if he had stopped, but luckily he didn’t!”

The Seacrest gelding, bred by trainer Ted Walsh in Ireland, evented with Lexi up to three-star level before Caroline Powell took on the ride in 2004.

Caroline and “Ed” represented New Zealand at two Olympic Games — Hong Kong and London, winning team bronze at the latter — and the World Equestrian Games in Aachen, 2006. They also completed Badminton seven times in a row, finishing in the top 12 five times.

“He doesn’t feel any different,” Lexi added. “He loves being out and about.”

Reaching the very top takes time, so it’s not unusual to see horses in their mid-teens riding high in the international rankings. While maturity and experience can give these older mounts a winning edge, the inevitable “miles on the clock” after years on the competition circuit can take their toll. Yet some horses — like Lenamore — just seem to keep on going. Find out how

Competitive career: Ed began eventing aged 5, completing 7 consecutive Badmintons and five Burghleys (winning in 2010). He represented New Zealand at the World Equestrian Games (WEG, 2006), the Hong Kong Olympics (2008) and 2012 Olympics — winning team bronze at London aged 19.

“When Ed arrived with us, as a 4-year-old, he looked like a hat-rack,” says owner Jane MacKinnon of the Irish draught-thoroughbred gelding.

“He had a very mixed-up brain, but he was beautifully put together and we could tell he had talent. He did two 3-day events a year, from 6 until he retired last year aged 20, and never had anything wrong with him.

“I think what helped was that we [Jane, her daughter Lexi and Ed’s rider Caroline Powell] were meticulous about getting him fit — we never took any shortcuts. He came home at the end of each season for a holiday. In mid-November we would start walking him on the road every day for up to an hour and a half, sometimes more, before he returned to Caroline in January.

“Ed was never fussy about his food and was far too good a doer, given half a chance. He was turned out every day, in all weathers, and he liked routine. The only thing he has had in latter years is a joint supplement. He was a once-in-a-lifetime horse.”

“Ed was extraordinary,” agrees Caroline. “He was such a compact little unit and he knew how to look after himself — he realised his boundaries and limitations. We never overran him and his legs were well iced after competitions, but he never saw a vet for lameness issues.”

After retiring at the age of 20, Ed is still fit, well and raring to go. He will be out hunting next season.

The vet’s view: “Lenamore was a tough horse with good conformation, strong feet and an amazing ability to recover,” says New Zealand team vet Ollie Pynn. “It is unusual for a horse to last at that level, until that age, without major injury, but he was still going strong at the London Olympics.

“He was always prepared very well for events. He and Caroline made the cross-country look easy, which I’m sure will have helped his longevity.”

At 20 years old, he’s no spring chicken, but Lenamore is not one to laze around in “retirement”.

The gutsy grey retired from eventing earlier this year, but this afternoon (1 August) from 3pm fans will see him flying round Hickstead — tackling massive obstacles, including the Devil’s Dyke — 
in the Amlin Plus Eventing Grand Prix at the Longines Royal International Horse Show. 

“He’s in great form,” his rider Caroline Powell told H&H. “I’ve been taking him out showjumping to give him a bit of fun and keep his mind busy. He’s fit, well and still loving life.”

The 2010 Burghley winner and Kiwi team stalwart has taken part once before, in 2010, when he finished 4th.

“He thoroughly enjoyed it and we’ll be giving it a good bash again this time,” added Caroline.

Competitors tackle a course of showjumps before embarking on a series of mainly knock-down cross-country style fences.

Another combination to watch is Grand National-winning jockey Robbie Power, who is hoping to escape the Galway racing festival to ride Speed Derby winner Doonaveeragh O One (pictured below).

Trevor Breen will partner Laura Collett’s Badminton ride, Noble Bestman, while she recovers from her fall.

Headley Britannia, Inonothing and Lenamore looked fabulous in their joint retirement ceremony at Badminton Horse Trials

Former Badminton Horse Trials winners Headley Britannia and Inonothing were joined by Burghley Horse Trials champion Lenamore for a public farewell in the main arena at the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials on Monday 7 May.

Accompanied by commentary from Ian Stark, the three elite eventers enjoyed a emotional lap of honour (pictured), before having their saddles removed and being led from the arena in front of their adoring fans.

All three horses looked in excellent condition and belied their ages, with 20-year-old Lenamore requiring two grooms to contain his exuberance as he left the arena.

Lenamore, one of the most popular and enduring event horses of all time, has been retired aged 20.

Owners Lexi Jackson, her mother Janie Mackinnon and rider Caroline Powell made the decision last Friday (8 March) after a routine pre-season veterinary check-up.

“He went to Rossdales in Newmarket for his yearly inspection and they discovered a little more wear and tear than we thought,” said Caroline. “He’s not lame and not injured — it’s just old age.”

Lexi said: “The difficult thing is that he looks amazing — so fit and well. We were all in floods of tears as we made the decision.”

Lenamore, the winner of the 2010 Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials with Caroline Powell, may compete for New Zealand at this summer’s London Olympics.

The popular 19-year-old grey was retired from championship selection two years ago because his owners – Lexi Jackson and her mother Janey Mackinnon – and rider Caroline did not want to subject him to further international travel.

A decision on his availability for London had been left until after the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials, where Lenamore was due to challenge to become the first horse to finish the event eight times, after seven consecutive completions.

But with the cancellation of Badminton, Equestrian Sports New Zealand have confirmed that he is now available for selection and being added to the eventing high performance 2012 squad.

Caroline Powell, a world team bronze medallist in 2010 with Mac Macdonald, said: “He will be a very good athlete for London if he is selected. He’s small and nippy enough to cope with the undulations on the cross-country course and I think he would do well.”

ESNZ high performance coach Erik Duvander added: “Lenamore has looked so great over the whole winter preparation, we were confident things would fall into place.”

Lenamore has completed 14 four-stars with eight top-10 placings. He was best of the New Zealand horses at the 2008 Olympics, when he finished 14th.

Caroline has now re-routed him to the World Cup class at Chatsworth this weekend following Badminton’s cancellation.

The New Zealand team will be announced in early July.

“I think we have the makings of a really good team for London,” said Caroline. “We just need to keep all the horses in one piece, run them in the right places and do the right thing for them all.”

Lenamore’s fourth place at Burghley Horse Trials (4 September) pushes him to the top of the all-time British Eventing points table with 2,203 points.

The veteran grey gelding picked up 150 points on Sunday, propelling him past the late Spring Along (2,183 points) and Over To You (2,170).

Standing just 15.2hh and at 18 years of age, Lenamore is one of the smallest — and oldest — horses competing at four-star level.

He won Burghley last year (2010) and represented New Zealand with Caroline at the 2006 WEG and the 2008 Olympic Games.

And Lenamore is showing no signs of slowing down.

Caroline — who took over the ride from owner Lexi Jackson in 2004 — says he’s “come out really well” after completing Captain Mark Phillips’s demanding course.

“He was really keen to get out in the field on Monday (5 September). He galloped about, as if he’d done nothing.

“He’ll have a really good holiday and we’ll get him in with next year in mind and just see what happens.

“There’s no point in stopping him when he’s having fun — but he is old and we’ll be watching for any signs that he’s not enjoying himself.”
