While there is plenty of good hunting to be had all over the UK, property expert Carla Passino says that Leicestershire really is the crème de la crème when it comes to prime hunting country. Here, she explains why...

Why should the hunting community head to Leicestershire?

Modern hunting was born in Leicestershire, when Hugh Meynell began breeding hounds at the Quorn Hall estate. Today the local packs — the Quorn, Cottesmore (pictured), Fernie and Belvoir — are some of the best in the UK, with the hunting country nothing short of fantastic.

“Many parts of Leicestershire are designed for hunting with coverts planted at strategic points, jumpable hedges and post and rails throughout the most popular areas,” says Richard Clowes of Richard Clowes Property Search & Consultancy.

Who are the top riders you will struggle to kep up with hunting in Leicestershire?

Vere and Clea Phillipps, who live at Grange Farm in Rempstone, hunt with the Quorn and produce successful hunters, alongside showjumpers, event and National Hunt horses. While event riders Mark and Tanya Kyle are based at Queenholme Equestrian in Wymeswold, where they offer training and some livery services.

Where can you hone your jumping skills?

There’s a good choice of equestrian centres in the area — Witham Villa in Broughton Astley, Vale View in Old Dalby, Brooksby Equestrian Centre in Melton Mowbray and Markfield Equestrian Centre in Markfield.

Where can you be competitive off the hunting field?

Point-to-pointing is at Garthorpe, and across the county border at Dingley and Guilsborough in Northamptonshire, and Clifton-on-Dunsmore in Warwickshire.

The Fernie Hunt Supporters Association holds hunter trials at Illston-on-the-Hill in September, while a range of equestrian classes are available at the popular Blaston Show in Blaston, near Market Harborough.

What are the property prices like?

Richard Clowes explains: “About £150,000 for five acres with stables, at least £500,000 for a basic property with some land, over £1.25 million for a farmhouse with a few acres and some equestrian facilities.”

Melton Hunt Ride cancelled due to continued bad weather

The bad weather has claimed another high profile victim — this year’s Melton Hunt Club Ride.

The popular race — one of the highlights of the winter hunt ride calendar — had been due to run in the Quorn country, Leicestershire, on 10 February.

But organisers took the decision to cancel last week, when much of the county was under snow.

Melton Hunt Club chairman Joey Newton said the continued bad weather — with widespread flooding followed by snow — and the difficulties of preparing horses in the wintry conditions were to blame.

The race will miss a year and the Quorn event will run in February 2014, he added.

Record side saddle turnout for Quorn opening meet

Side saddle aficionados from as far afield as Ireland and Belgium made the journey to Leicestershire on Saturday (27 October) for the Quorn’s opening meet.

Organised by Emma Brown, 40 ladies hunted side saddle, which is thought to be a record in modern times.

“I was so proud to have had a hand in the proceedings, to see such elegance and history being made — and to see so many friends who enjoy riding sideways,” said Miss Brown.

Riders included the Irish side saddle high jump holder Susan Oakes and her friend Kalindi Lawrence, Heidi Ruyver — who brought her stallion, Berner over from Belgium for the occasion — and 12-year-old Lucy Burton with her pony Maria.

Lorries turned up from Yorkshire and East Anglia. Karen Bamford provided a number of hirelings for riders including Jo Hales and Julia Broadman, a Derbyshire-based side saddle judge.

Another Irish rider, Emily Meredith, looked so elegant in her habit that it prompted her boyfriend, Dermot Haniffy, to propose.

Bruce Langley McKim, who has featured in H&H riding his Irish draught stallion side saddle, lent him to Barbara Wale for the occasion. Other ladies out included Alicia Bradley on 22-year-old Skeeta Reefa — thought to be the oldest horse in the field — and Samantha Pilling from Coalville on Toby, nicknamed ‘the warhorse’, who was reported to have jumped the biggest hedges he has ever tackled sideways.

“I think you could say it’s going to be called the ‘side saddle opening meet’ from now on,” said Miss Brown.

“Monday will seem quiet hunting without them all,” she added.

Police investigate incident of assault on two-year-old pony

Police are investigating an incident where a filly was assaulted in the village of Croft, Leicestershire.

The pony’s injuries were so severe that she had to be put to sleep a few days later.

The two-year-old New Forest pony was found in her field with her legs tied together two weeks ago by her owner Matt Bryan.

Nine other horses in the field were unharmed.

“Some sick person has attacked her — we strongly believe she was also sexually assaulted,” said Mr Bryan.

“We didn’t realise the extent of the injuries at first, but the flesh on her legs rapidly deteriorated and started to fall off.

“The vet said this has all the hallmarks of previous assault cases in the area.”

The filly’s back legs had been so tightly tied that her blood circulation was cut off.

She was bought as a wild foal from the New Forest, and belonged to the Bryans’ three-year-old daughter.

Mr Bryan has 18 horses, including broodmares, at his yard and is concerned for their safety.

“The field where the filly was attacked was only 500 yards from our house, with neighbours overlooking,” he said.

“But I’ve moved them all [the horses] out. Some have gone to a friend’s fields; the others are crammed into my stables. I’d rather they were squashed and safe.”

Leicestershire Police confirmed that they are investigating the incident.

“A horse was left with its legs tied up in a field in Croft at some time between Sunday 9 January and Monday 10 January, and enquiries are ongoing,” said a spokesman.

Leicester County show cancelled until 2012

The news is not all bad for Leicester County Show, which last week announced its cancellation for 2010 and 2011.

The two-day show — traditionally held at Melton Airfield over the first May bank holiday — has an extensive equine section encompassing driving, farriery, showjumping and showing, including a number of important qualifiers.

Organiser Leicestershire Agricultural Society said the cancellation had been a difficult decision but made for “a number of reasons”.

Society chairman James Webb told H&H there had been a drop in sponsorship revenue of almost 50% over the past couple of years.

But a change of venue to a permanent, 85-acre site in Market Harborough is the main reason behind the cancellation.

“The new site won’t be ready until 2012, and we can’t run anything else at Melton Airfield after early May. So if we made losses on this year’s show we would not have been able to soak them up later in the year,” he said. “We’re just being responsible.”

The show has always been well supported by exhibitors and competitors — in particular, says Mr Webb, the equine section, which attracted around 1,200 competitors last year.

And the society hopes the new site will offer opportunities to expand.

“The new site will have a main ring, fencing and security office and so on,” he said. “After the 2012 show we want to put in an all-weather surface for the equestrian section and look at running more equine competitions year round.”
