“Watch riders that you admire and have an image in your mind of how you want you and your horse to look. An impression in your mind helps when you are riding on your own, as it gives you something to work on. Learning ‘feel’ is also important as it means you can make corrections without someone having to tell you.”

2. Alice Oppenheimer

“Always take your time in the initial warm up phase to ensure that your horse is physically and mentally ready to work before you start the ‘work’ phase of your session. I like to feel that they are working in front of my leg and forwards to the contact before asking for anything more demanding.”

3. Dan Greenwood

“Make time to look at your horse and assess him properly every other week. Either get someone else to sit on so you can take a look and get some feedback, or lunge him. Is he moving freely and equally? Especially in the winter, it’s too easy to take rugs off, tack up and get on and go. You’ll then have a clear picture in your head of what your horse needs to work on.”

4. Isobel Wessels

“Improve the contact. As a judge, I see people lose marks because of the contact all the time. It’s something that affects every single movement and if you have the contact better, your horse will be nicer to ride and the picture will look more correct, earning you more marks. Spend some time during the winter months really improving the contact through lots of transitions, so that you have the horse really in front of you, taking the bridle from behind.”

5. Spencer Wilton

“At home, I spend a lot of time achieving the ‘perfect’ feeling underneath me, but at a show, a limited warm up time means it’s not always possible to create that feeling before you go in the ring. The art of good training is knowing how much time to spend on waiting for that perfect moment and teaching yourself and the horse what to do when the moment isn’t perfect. That way, you have all bases covered.”

6. Lara Butler

“Training a horse is like teaching a young child — they don’t know the difference between right and wrong, so it is our job to guide them in the right direction. Always make it fun for the horse and let them know you are pleased with what they are doing, as they will try a lot harder for you.”

7. Judy Harvey

“During the winter months, make allowances for the weather and any time off your horse might have. Don’t have too high expectations and expect your horse to get straight back to the stage you left off in your last session. He needs more time to supple up in the winter and expend any excess energy from being stabled more, so allow for this when you start a session.”

Over this festive season, we are shining a light on up-and-coming talent across the equestrian disciplines. These are riders you really need to keep an eye out for during the 2021 season...

The opportunity to compete a former grand prix horse has helped put Laura Gulliver on the map as a para rider, and with an exciting young horse waiting in the wings, the 25-year-old has her sights firmly set on the Paris 2024 Paralympics.

Laura was working as an apprentice for Judy Harvey aged 16 when she was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis.

“I’m now self-employed and went down the riding and teaching route rather than working full-time on a yard,” explained Laura. “Judy and Clive Milkins both encouraged me to get classified for para dressage – at the time I didn’t have any idea about para or whether I could do it.

“I ride with looped reins as I struggle with my hands and wrists – I found dropping the reins halfway through a test wasn’t very helpful! I also ride with two whips as I don’t have much strength and range in my legs,” explains Laura, a grade IV rider, who still trains with Judy. “I struggle a lot with fatigue, as well as the pain and difficulty with my joints, so it’s always a balancing act trying not to overdo it, especially in the build-up to a show.

“I focus on giving the horses short bursts on good quality work. I ride them every day, so they’re used to me on my good days and my bad days.”

Laura took up para dressage in 2013, making her international debut in 2014 with Egegardens Dior and later Woodcroft Natalia. And then a very exciting opportunity arose.

“I worked at Lesley Peyton-Gilbert’s yard and looked after Woodcroft Garuda K while he was competing at international grand prix with her. A few years later I bumped into his owners at the nationals and they said he was stepping down from grand prix and wondered if anyone would like him as a schoolmaster. I said, ‘Do you think he would the para job?’”

Now 19, the Trakehner stallion is based with Laura and the pair have had great success together, securing top international placings and being crowned grade IV national champions in 2019. They were also reserve national winter champions in February this year.

When the coronavirus pandemic began, Laura spent months shielding by living in a tent due to her vulnerability to Covid-19.

“I had to be really careful and it was tough not knowing when it would be over,” she says. “Luckily I rent a private yard and could keep riding, which gave me something to focus on.”

A summer of training paid off when Laura won at the summer’s British Dressage Festival of Para Dressage, before scoring a trio of second places at Keysoe CPEDI in October. Now she is excited about spending the winter bringing on the eight-year-old Trakehner gelding Farok V. Singing (pictured above), who is owned by Joanna Alderton-Whitworth.

“He came to me in August and is a very blank canvas. We’re about to make our BD debut, and he needs to get out and about for some exposure,” says Laura. “I feel as though I’m a rider who is currently slightly in the shadows, but we’re working away behind the scenes, and I’m aiming for Paris 2024 with him.”

Six “exceptional” horses have been selected to represent Britain at the FEI World Breeding Federation Dressage Championships for Young Horses. These prestigious championships, originally scheduled for August, but postponed due to the pandemic, will take place at the iconic German venue of Verden on 9-13 December.

Selection trials were held earlier this month at the British Dressage (BD) National Young Horse Championships 2020.

“The standards were high and it was clear that riders had used the time away from competition wisely,” said chief selector Judy Harvey. “The six horses we’ve selected are exceptional and a credit to their riders, owners and breeders.”

Britain will field the maximum of two horses in each of the five-, six- and seven- year-old divisions, with two seven-year-old reserves named as well.

International judge and team selector Judy Harvey impressed between the white boards to claim the Equi-Trek elementary gold title on day two of the NAF Five Star Winter Dressage Championships 2020.

Judy rode the seven-year-old Benico gelding SP Bento, whom she co-owns with Jos Rosenberg, to claim her first national title since 2007.

“I should have hung up my boots years ago, but Jos told me to go out and buy a horse,” laughed Judy. “SP Bento is such an easy horse. Here, I thought the lack of an area walk might actually pay to our advantage as he is not spooky at all. I was chuffed to pieces with his way of going in the test. But then he almost launched me into outer space when he spotted a cactus after coming out of the ring.”

Judy posted 72.24% to lead the class of 16, commenting that the elementary 59 is a tough test for the level.

“SP Bento struggled doing this test last summer, but he is more mature now and actually since lockdown he has become much more through and more established. He’s such a fun horse to ride.”

‘He always says yes’

Tayley Reeve-Smith returned to the podium for the second time in as many days at the Winter Dressage Championships. She followed up her third place finish in the elementary gold freestyle yesterday with the runner-up spot in the straight elementary gold, riding Woodcroft Valentino to 71.67%.

“He has such a lovely brain and always says yes,” she said of the seven-year-old who is known as Frankie. “What you get outside the ring with him, you also get in the ring, which is nice.

“Jetta O’Cain, who owns half of him, can’t be here but she’s been watching the live stream on her phone and we’ve been sending all sorts of texts and silly pictures. It’s been really lovely.”

Alejandro Farina completed the podium, finishing third aboard Walwin with 70.42%.

Before Charlotte Dujardin’s name became synonymous with record-breaking and dressage medals, she worked for the international grand prix rider Judy Harvey for four years.

Initially, she just mucked out, but her aspiration was always to ride.

“Judy was amazing,” recalls Charlotte. “I learnt so much from her. She was strict, but very black and white. She could make you feel tiny — but my god you learned not to make mistakes.

“I didn’t ride for the first year, just mucked out, cobwebbed and tidied the muck heap.”

At the time, Charlotte owned an Irish/thoroughbred gelding. She had single-handedly taught the horse to piaffe and passage, mostly from watching DVDs of Carl Hester on Maxwell.

She recalls clearly the day that Judy put her on Richard Heley’s horse Wow Voyager so she could have the feel of an experienced horse underneath her. Impressed with Charlotte’s ability to teach horses to collect in the trot, Judy then put her on Lucaro, with whom she was having some difficulty with the piaffe.

“She said I had talent for the piaffe as I’d made the Irish/thoroughbred do fancy trot,” says Charlotte. “So I told her Lucaro could piaffe. She bet me £5 that I couldn’t make it piaffe. Within a week it piaffed,” remembers Charlotte with a proud grin.

‘I said I’d never clean the saddle again!’

The first time Charlotte met Carl in person was on a World Class viewing day. She took the then seven-year-old Fernandez (pictured), who would become her first grand prix horse.

“I’d taught ‘Dez’ piaffe and passage — but really he was just throwing his legs about,” she recalls. “I didn’t have a clue what I was doing.

“When I found out that Carl was the rider at the World Class day, I was so nervous. Ferdi [Eilberg] was there too, and I’d idolized them, and watched Carl at so many shows.

“When Carl got off Dez, he said he was lovely and sensitive, and a fun and talented horse. At the time I said I’d never clean the saddle again. That seems a bit gross now! I was so in awe of him; I was blown away.”

Charlotte’s mother Jane coaxed her shy daughter into asking Carl if she could come for a lesson.

“We killed our lorry in a flood on the way to the first lesson,” remembers Charlotte with embarrassment. “Then we had to leave Dez there and get the lorry towed.”

It was an inauspicious start to Carl and Charlotte’s relationship.

She asked about job vacancies on his yard and, sure enough, he needed cover for 10 days while his head girl was on holiday.

“I couldn’t believe it,” she says. “It was so cool. I’d never stayed away from home before and I thought I’d just be mucking out. But that’s Carl through and through and he gave me amazing opportunities: every day I’d ring my mum and tell her who I’d ridden. I lived with Lucy [Cartwright] and we had a blast. She made it easy not to panic about feeling homesick.”

The drive that Charlotte demonstrated in those crucial 10 days — which morphed into years — was also evident in her early days of ponies.

“We’d do them before and after school,” says Charlotte, who rode at the Horse of the Year Show as a tot. “I’d be out there ages and mum would drag me in.

“My sister Emma Jane would ride hers and if she’d had a problem, I’d get it back in from the field and school it, which would wind her up a treat.

“We were competitive, too, but she really suffered from nerves. She now produces show ponies, and she’s brilliant at it.”

Charlotte’s come a million miles since those days of ponies. Now, people line up in their droves just to get her signature.

“It’s incredible,” she says. “There have been people crying and shaking at signings. I tell them not to and I find it a bit strange, because I’m just me, but they see me as some sort of superhero.”

It was tears all round as Lou Wega finished his intermediate I test this afternoon with Fiona Brennan.

Many will know the horse as both Judy Harvey’s former small tour ride, and a European young rider team horse with Abigail Slater.

But ‘Louis’ is contesting his last national championships and will fully retire upon his return home to Judy’s Buckinghamshire base.

Owned by Richard Heley, who also owns Judy’s former grand prix horse Fitzcerraldo, the 18-year-old by Lamoureux II is on his thirteenth visit to Stoneleigh.

“He’s going to retire in the field now; it will be so strange not riding him,” says Fiona, who has worked for Judy for the past four-and-a-half years. She took up the ride in 2012 as there was “no one else to ride him”.

“Every day he gives me the most incredible feeling. Then at shows he steps it up another gear and there’s no stopping him. He’s so bouncy. He’s quite lazy so it was really hard to keep him forward at first,” she says.

“He’s not the most flashy, but he’s taught me how to ride a test; all about preparing and setting up. He’s shaped my whole approach.”

“We never expected him to get back up to this level after stepping down from young riders. Competing at Hartpury CDI in 2015 was definitely one of the highlights of our time together; getting the flag [awarded for representing your country] was something I always wanted to do.”

Retiring on a high

The pair scored 63.26% today, and Fiona was “delighted” with him.

“It was so emotional,” she says, with tears in her eyes again.

“I just wanted to do him justice — we have such a good partnership now. We had a couple of mistakes, but he wouldn’t be him if we didn’t. He takes charge sometimes, which is a bit embarrassing!”

He might be a total professional in the ring, but Louis is known for his bad behaviour at shows.

“He’s just fully disgraced himself hand-grazing!” Fiona sighs. “He’s getting worse as he gets older – leaping and bucking around.”

“He lights up at shows, he’s so happy. At home he’s the complete opposite; so chilled. But he’s still cheeky about everything — he’s naughty out hacking, he thinks it’s a barrel of laughs.”

“He is one of a kind,” she concludes. “He’s taught me everything.”

The list of riders nominated to compete in the FEI World Cup dressage qualifier at Olympia Horse Show (16-22 December) has been released and includes 3 of the 4 bronze medal-winning British team riders from this year’s European Championships.

World No.1 Charlotte Dujardin is nominated on both Valegro (pictured) and Uthopia, though H&H columnist Carl Hester has confirmed that Valegro is the more likely starter. Carl will ride Gemma Green’s Florestan stallion Fine Time, with whom he is the current British Dressage national champion.

A total of 9 British riders have made the starting line-up.

Lara Griffith will make her Olympia debut with Laura Tomlinson’s former ride Andretti H. Roland Tong, riding for Ireland, will also make his debut on his Europeans ride Pompidou.

Laura is not competing, but will attend Olympia with Mistral Hojris for an official retirement ceremony.

Emile Faurie partners his new grand prix horse Topolino (by Tip Top), while Michael Eilberg has the choice of either his Europeans ride Half Moon Delphi or Marakov. Judy Harvey, Nikki Crisp and Anna Ross Davies complete the strong British contingent.

Fans of the popular Dutch couple Edward Gal and Hans Peter Minderhoud will be pleased to see that both are set to compete at the popular show, though it is still uncertain which of their massive string of top level horses they will ride. Dutch rising star and Olympia debutante Danielle Heijkoop comes fresh from dual victories at the CDI4* Oldenburg earlier this month on her Gribaldi son Kingsley Siro.

Germany’s sole representative, the multi-talented Ingrid Klimke, will ride the British-owned Dresden Mann. The former breeding stallion, now gelded, is only nine.

British-based Dane Anders Dahl partners his wife Fiona Bigwood’s Wie Weltmeyer gelding Wie Atlantico, while his compatriot Nathalie zu Sayn-Wittgenstein will ride the charismatic and high-scoring Donnerhall gelding, Digby.

The grand prix takes place at 3pm on Monday, 16 December with the freestyle to music the following evening. H&H will be offering free, live, interactive written commentary from the show.

Definite entries will be announced on 6 December.

List one judge Jo Graham has replaced British Dressage (BD) senior selector Judy Harvey, who has stepped down to concentrate on her riding.

Teams director Nick Burton heads the panel, having taken over from David Trott. Both Mr Trott and Mrs Harvey remain policy advisers.

Judy Firmston-Williams is new chief junior and young riders selector and Paul Hayler has rejoined chief selector Jenny Ward and Rachel Hillier on the pony panel.

Mr Burton said: “The new selectors bring a wealth of experience and I look forward to working with them.”

Judy Harvey and Richard Heley’s Fitzcerraldo made a winning grand prix debut at Patchetts, Hertfordshire (26-27 August). In second place was World Class squad member Lisa Hopkins on Lindsay Roberts’s Nemo III.

Young rider Rebecca Bates partnered Bunjee to head the prix st georges.

In her first affiliated competition, Debby Bignell and the former advanced eventer Aztec III led the prelim qualifier on 74.5% and also won the novice restricted qualifier.

It was also a winning debut for Sara-Jane Lanning with a double at elementary on Kate Lamburn’s European Bacherus.

Alison Berman had four wins on three horses. She scored a double at novice on Donald McTaggart’s four-year-old Duchess, won an elementary qualifier on Diesel D, who is owned by Judy Firmston-Williams and Anna Ross-Davies, and then went on to take the advanced medium qualifier on her own Twister 23.

Tracey Nelson took a novice qualifier on her “sharp as a knife” Ulysses II.
