Denim breeches are a great addition to any equestrian wardrobe as you can ride in them and then pop to the shops while still looking pretty smart and not too “yardy”.

Jodhpurs vs Breeches – what’s the difference and which should you be wearing? And what about riding tights and leggings? Of course, you can ride in a pair of jeans – but trousers specifically designed for riding are going to be more comfortable in the saddle. As such, they often have built-in reinforcement at the pressure points and no seam down the inside of the leg to prevent rubbing. Modern riding trousers are made of a stretchy fabric, to allow give as you move with the horse, and minimise chafing because the fabric stays still.

But which of the three options to choose? Riders often use the words interchangeably, but there are subtle differences between each type.

Why choose breeches

Breeches (often pronounced britches, which refers to the same item of clothing) are the shortest of riding trousers, finishing around mid-calf and certainly above the ankle. Traditionally they have velcro fastenings at the ankle so they don’t rise up the leg, although now it is more common to have elasticated inserts that do the same job, as well as reinforced knee patches to protect the skin from abrasion.

They are designed to be worn with a long riding boot, but you can use half-chaps with long riding socks and a short riding boot. They are considered the most formal of the three options. They would be the choice of the competitive rider – competition breeches are typically white, beige or canary, depending on your discipline and jacket.

Breeches originated in the cavalry for soldiers spending many hours in the saddle. The tight lower leg enabled a boot to go over the top of the trousers, while the puffed thigh of yesteryear has almost entirely given way to a more fitted design – modern fabrics allow freedom of movement even when they are close-fitting. Breeches with a pleated front are often popular with male riders as the less close fit proves additional comfort around the crotch.

The pros

Smart and considered more formal. Although they were “invented” centuries ago, modern breeches are made from stretchy fabric, so they are designed to allow freedom of movement, while giving the rider a traditional look.

The cons

Although not essential, breeches ideally need to be accompanied by a long riding boot, otherwise there is a gap between the top of the short boot and the bottom of the leg of the breeches. This makes for a more expensive outfit. Even wearing long socks and chaps, the various different lengths of materials can cause chafing.

The verdict

The preferred choice for adult competition riders and on the hunting field, as well as leisure riders who prefer to wear long riding boots.

Reasons to choose jodhpurs

Jodhpurs are very similar to breeches – with a long riding boot on, it’s hard to discern which is which. The chief difference is that jodhpurs are full-length riding trousers, extending to the ankle. They are designed to be worn with a short jodhpur boot and chaps if required. They are often worn by children, who are more likely to wear short riding boots, as they allow more flexibility in the ankle. This makes it easier to feel what they are doing with their lower leg, and to learn the correct lower-leg position.

Jodhpurs’ origins lie in India, taking their name from the city of Jodhpur. In the 19th century, Sir Pratap Singh, the son of the Maharajah of Jodhpur, played a lot of polo and developed what we know as jodhpurs based on an ancient style of Indian trousers called the churidar, which is tight round the calf and loose at the hips, to allow freedom of movement while preventing rubbing.

The pros

Like breeches, today’s jodhpurs are no longer made from a heavy cotton twill, so the rider will look the part as well as be able to stay agile on their horse, without being rubbed.

Jodhpurs usually have reinforced knee patches, which is particularly good for preventing rubs on children.

The cons

Because of the material around the ankle, jodhpurs can be uncomfortable with a long riding boot on, and are better suited to chaps or paddock boots, which have more give around the ankle.

The verdict

The ideal choice for younger riders, giving additional protection down the lower leg for those who don’t wear long riding boots.

Why leggings or riding tights may suit you best

An alternative to jodhpurs and breeches, riding tights are more similar in design to a pair of leggings you might wear at the gym. They are made from a thinner fabric than breeches or jodhpurs, which means they give the rider a closer feel with the horse. They should be lightweight, very comfortable and offer great freedom of movement. They are usually a pull-on style, and made of a four-way stretch material, making them easy to change into.

The pros

They tend to be made from technical fabrics, so are generally breathable, comfortable and offer good grip. They are also available with various trims, such as reflective panelling, mesh, seamless or flat seams.

There is a huge range of colours and patterns.

They often have an in-built phone pocket.

The cons

A less traditional look, so not the choice if you are going for a formal style. Rarely seen in the competition arena – typically a more casual option.

The verdict

Ideal for a comfortable, technical and a smart modern look. You can go from the gym straight to your horse!

Jodhpurs vs breeches vs leggings: Horse & Hound’s verdict

Dublin’s new legwear range has landed, and we’re talking something for everyone, catering for those who aren’t looking to spend more than £40 on a pair of everyday jodhpurs, and those who wouldn’t baulk at paying just over £100 for a pair of competition breeches.

Bea Meitiner, sales manager at Dublin explains: “The 2018 range is split into three clear collections offering a ‘Good, Better, Best’ structure to suit every type of rider. Riders can choose from the Momentum range for everyday wear through to the extra performance of Ascent, to the ultimate style and comfort of Distinction. The Distinction range offers a choice of two full seat breeches, designed with competition riders’ needs in mind, both of which use engineered fabrics with a dust-resistant coating to provide comfort, protection and flexibility.

The Dublin Distinction Edge Gel full seat breeches are the most expensive option at £109.99 RRP and stand out thanks to the stretchy “action panel” running down the outside of the leg from hip to ankle (pictured right). These ladies’ competition breeches are available in white or sand (sizes 8-18).

The Dublin Distinction Elite Gel full seat breeches (pictured above) are slightly cheaper at £99.99 and have a more traditional yet refined appearance in a greater choice of colours (black, navy, sand and white).

Competitively priced at £39.99 are the Dublin Momentum Supa-Fit Zip Up Euro Seat Jodhpurs that have a self-fabric knee patch and a striking contrast colour euro seat for a stand-out appearance. Colour options are blue/navy, graphite/purple, navy/pink and navy/red.

Also available in this Momentum Supa-Fit range are a choice of pull on (£34.99) or zip up (£36.99) mid-rise jodhpurs in with a self fabric knee patch. Both are available in beige, black, navy, berry, sea blue and white.

Our reviewer found these jodhpurs not only good value but also comfortable and flattering

I sampled these jodhpurs in a size 26″ (UK size 10), regular length, in black with red stitching.

On first impression, the simplistic design of the jodhpurs appealed to me. They are high-waisted with a fairly wide waistband, feature deep pockets (without a zip) and streamlined leg with self fabric seat.

They were a comfortable fit without being too baggy in my usual size. I am 5’6″ and the length was perfect.

The fabric has a high-quality feel and is the ideal thickness – not so thin that you become cold or feel unsupported, but not really thick and overly bulky. According to the product’s description on the Harry Hall website it is finished with a finish that has a high level of self cleansing oil and water repellency, as well as high abrasion resistance and wash permanence.

Indeed my pair does seem to have stayed cleaner for longer and appeared to catch less hairs than my usual black jodhpurs. They have washed well and look pretty much as good as new, bar one point which I will come to.

The jodhpurs are easy to fasten with a zip and hook and bar at the top. There is also the option to wear a belt as there are belt loops around the waistband. As it is winter I have been wearing longer tops over the high waist and this has been very comfortable and kept me warm.

My only criticism of the jodhpurs is the reflective print above the knee cracked on their first wear. They still look ok and is hardly noticeable (see picture), but stops them looking brand new. Personally I would do away with this feature if I had designed the jodhpurs as I don’t think it adds much.

Despite this small fault I would still recommend these jodhpurs to a friend. They are very good value, comfortable, flattering and offer a good quality fabric.

I tested these Elite Kynton breeches in size 32” colour blue. The sizing seemed right and the breeches were very comfortable and lightweight.

The gel knee grip is a good concept, they really do provide more grip. As I ride side-saddle, if a full seated version of these were on the market I would definitely buy them.

Although the gel grip was good while in the saddle, after a few washes the gel on the right knee started to peel off (and I religiously stuck to manufacturer guidelines). I’d only spent about ten hours in the saddle at this point. However, it didn’t affect the functionality and still had the same grip. The knee area, as a result of washing, didn’t look very good.

I do put my breeches through their paces. I spend many hours in the saddle in a variety of disciplines through any weather. I run a yard with my husband who spends a lot of time coaching other riders, leaving me with quite a lot of yard work to get done. With a three-year-old son and two part time jobs, I often don’t have much time to spare. For this reason my breeches go on in the morning and stay on all day. Although very comfortable I seem to have picked up several snags in the fabric, something that I’ve not come across with most of my other breeches.

I’d like to say good value for money as comfy everyday breeches but if I’d bought these I would return them due to the disintegration of the right knee gel patch. This was presumably a fault as the left knee is still fine.

Our reviewer loved these breeches despite them being a little warm in the summer months

I tested the Euro-Star energy fullgrip breeches in a gorgeous sea green colour called titanium.

I am usually a German 38. These are a 36 but they fit perfectly so they come up on the generous side with their sizing.

They’re heaped with great features, my favourite of which was the incredible close-contact feeling they offer when riding. It’s like wearing a second skin.

Due to the technical nature of the fabric I found them the perfect breeches for spring and autumn riding, but during the hottest of summer days, the full seat did get a bit clammy.

But they became my go-to breeches for showery days as they dry in no time.

Clammy factor aside, the fabric is sheer and flattering, covering up lumps and bumps (yes, OK, cellulite!) in a way I didn’t really think was possible from skin-tight clothing.

I liked the flex design on the ankle. I have ruined so many pieces of clothing through washing them with Velcro-bottomed breeches that I have forgotten to do up and have snagged on other things in the washing machine.

And don’t even get me started on the silly design of some breeches, where the spiky side of the Velcro digs into your leg under your socks!

Anyway, no such issues with these breeches.

They attracted lots of complements from fellow liveries, even though the waffle pattern on the full seat resembles a drain cover. But I like it.

And the false pockets on the back are a nice touch. I was a bit worried that the false zip pull would jingle — especially in sitting trot — but it didn’t.

The real pockets on the front are super handy. It’s amazing the number of times I can leave the house without a hair band and miraculously find one in the pocket.

Even though I really loved these breeches, they did develop some bobbling after a few washes. But I did test them good and proper; not just for a week or two.

Overall I’d say that these are great technical breeches, but make sure you wash them inside out and perhaps have another pair to hand in the height of summer.

Verdict

A fantastic pair of technical breeches

Despite some worries about cost our reviewer very much enjoyed using these jodhpurs

I tested the navy Balance Riding Tights in medium. My first impression was that the breeches looked extremely comfortable, as they resemble yoga pants. I really liked this about them as I love an excuse to lounge around in my breeches after riding.

When I first put the breeches on I found them to be quite high-rise, despite saying mid-rise on the website. I am 5’8’’ and found that they sit above my belly button – I wouldn’t want them to come up any higher so would think about getting the size down if I was shorter. Despite this the breeches do fit very well and are rather flattering. They are made from 76% Supplex nylon and 24% spandex jersey, which creates a great ‘recovery stretch’ fabric. They do remind me a lot of gym pants as they fit almost like a second skin and are easy to pull on and off.

Due to the feel of the material I was a bit worried that it would snag, however I

have found it to be of good quality. What especially appeals to me is that straw and horse hair doesn’t stick to the breeches – this is great news as I am allergic to both (the irony).

The breeches are lightweight and quick drying. A true benefit for those moments when you get caught in the rain! They feature opti-dry technology that wicks away moisture and I do not get hot when I ride in them. However, I am slightly concerned that when the weather gets colder they may be too thin. Perhaps a fleece lined winter version would be a good idea for the future? In addition to this I would also like to see a full seat version, as the material is a little bit slippy in the saddle. The inside of the leg has lovely Toray Ultrasuede knee patches for grip, so it would be great to see this continued up the

breeches. Another feature that I liked is the easily accessible pocket on the thigh. This is great for keeping your phone in easy reach, and avoids you having to stuff it in your waistband like some of my other breeches!

I have in fact recommended these breeches to a friend as they have become a fast favourite. My only criticism here is I think that they are a little over priced for what they are. They have more colour options available in the US so I am hoping that these will come over to the UK soon. Overall I really like these breeches as they are easy to wear, comfortable and still look good.

Harry Hall has launched a new pair of pull-on jodhpurs with a contrast colour on the seat.

The “Zoey” jodhpurs are available in navy, dewberry, bubblegum, blue and black and feature a zip pocket.

“The jodhpurs are designed for everyday riding or training at home and have proved very popular so far,” a spokesman for Harry Hall told H&H.

H&H’s Zoe Wales approached some of our male readers to find out their views and difficulties when searching for the ideal jodhpur or breeches fit.

While women have issues with hips, thighs and calves, the recurring problem for men seems to stem from not being able to find a waist size that matches the correct length.

Norfolk-based equestrian all-rounder Dave Paisley vents his frustration: “The larger waist sizes never seem to be long enough in the leg.

“For some reason, jodhpur manufacturers seem to think that a bigger waist only matches a short person. It is so difficult to find an inexpensive pair of jodhpurs which are an all-round fit.”

Most respondents explained that the only way to find a well-fitting pair of breeches or jodhpurs was to spend more on the higher-priced brands, such as Cavallo and Pikeur.

John Shears, who manages a yard in Chelsfield in Kent, favours breeches over jodhpurs when competing and many support this point of view.

“The general fit from the thigh upwards just doesn’t seem to work for me and I would describe myself as an average size,” he says.

“Pikeur is the only manufacturer that I’ve found which doesn’t make men’s breeches to women’s proportions.”

Countrywide will be adding a new pair of jodhpurs to its Kadence range later this month, designed to offer added “stickability“.

The update on the existing “stikki bum jodhpur” will be made from tough stretch black denim with a synthetic suede seat with silicon pimples.

“They help me feel more secure in my seat and give me confidence to stay in the saddle – whatever move my horse might make,” said Countrywide’s Sara Blackshaw.

The jodhpurs will be available from late September in sizes 10-18.

Equestrian clothing brand Fuller Fillies has launched a new line of jodhpurs for the spring and summer, designed to visually lengthen the leg with a stripe that runs up the side.

The “Chevron jodhpurs” have a pull on design but are cut to the same pattern as the company’s best selling “Puppi jodhpurs”.

The broad waistband is designed for anyone who prefers a lower rise waistband.

A range of riding clothes designed to fit and flatter the larger lady rider has added new items to its line.

Fuller Fillies‘ Jean Genie jodhpurs and riding jeans are now available in black.

“Our Jean Genies have been so popular in blue that when we looked to expand our range, it made sense to add a black option to this great style,” said Fuller Fillies’ Suzanne Wild.
