British Eventing’s (BE) all-weather jumping and style (JAS) competitions will not run this winter.

The organisation has published its winter series calendar, featuring arena eventing and jump training, but has also announced there will be no JAS.

“For the 2018/19 winter series BE will be running arena eventing and jump training; with the jumping and style organising team stepping down we thank Andrew Hunter, Paul Davies and Holly Farr, along with all the many volunteers, for their dedication to the JAS series over the past 17 years,” said a BE spokesman.

The JAS series had classes from BE90 to open (1.15m), with a course of showjumps followed by simulated knock-down cross-country fences, including skinnies, corners and coffin-style combinations.

BE’s winter series will start on 3 November, with arena eventing held at Epworth in South Yorkshire.

Arena eventing (pictured, top) will follow the same format as last year, with a course of showjumps followed by cross-country fences on an all-weather surface against an optimum time, finishing with a joker at 10cm higher than the rest of the course.

Jump training features a warm-up and course walk with an accredited BE coach, followed by one round of showjumping, feedback from a second coach, another round of jumps and further feedback.

Arena eventing and jump training both take place at 80cm, 90cm and 1m levels. There are 11 arena eventing fixtures and nine jump training competitions taking place throughout November, December, January and February.

The respective championship finals will be hosted at Dallas Burston in Warwickshire on 24 February and Hartpury College in Gloucestershire on 17 February.

British Eventing (BE) introduced its jumping and style (JAS) series in 2001 as a stop-gap during the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak when outdoor competition was halted. In a nutshell, it is a quick-fire arena eventing competition, without the dressage.

The style aspect of the class is judged by a panel of judges and judges for the 2018 series include Sarah Bullimore and Jeanette Brakewell.

The series culminates in a final at the end of February which competitors must qualify for.

Here’s some fast facts to help describe how these competitions work.

• Classes range from BE90 to open (1.15m) level. They consist of six to eight showjumps, followed immediately by eight to 10 simulated, knock-down cross-country fences
• You can expect to find skinnies, corners and simulated coffins even at BE90 level, albeit in a simple form
• The fences are plastic, in bright and garish colours, and can catch out young horses
• There is an optimum time for the “cross-country” phase based on metres per minute. Exceeding the optimum time incurs one penalty for every second over
• The final score will consist of the total jumping and time-penalties, plus a style mark (out of a possible 60 points) judged by a BE-accredited coach or elite rider, over both jumping phases and translated into penalties

Training tips

• If your horse is not used to narrow fences, build up slowly. Start by using poles on the floor between wings, focusing on accuracy and control
• Recreate skinnies and corners at home using bright and garish materials to create obstacles
• Plan some “despooking” sessions. Get your horse used to jumping over blue plastic and makeshift water trays
• Before you enter an arena event, take part in at least a handful showjumping classes where the jump-off follows immediately after the first round to help get your horse used to jumping a number of fences in one go
• Hire a local show centre with bright fences or take part in a few indoor eventing clinics.

British Eventing’s jumping and style (JAS) series runs in January and February, offering riders the chance to practise showjumping and indoor cross-country from BE90 up to open novice level. There are also lots of unaffiliated competitions out there, which offer a more or less similar format.

Here are 11 reasons to give JAS a go if you can make it to one of the last few competitions this season…

1. Get your showjumping eye in — the first part of a round at a JAS competition is over showjumps, so it’s a great chance to practise that phase.

2. It’s a fun way to give older horses, who may be retired from “proper eventing”, a spin without the rigours of a full horse trials or any worries about ground conditions.

3. Lots of skinny practice — JAS offers the chance to jump arrowheads and corners in a knockdown format, so it’s a fabulous way to tune up your accuracy for the season ahead.

4. There is a style element, so a British Eventing (BE) accredited coach or elite rider will be marking your performance and you can get a feel for whether you need to work on your position or technique.

5. Brain workout. JAS tends to feature lots and lots of fences in a small space and they come up seriously fast. So you need all your Mensa capabilities to make sure you tackle the jumps in the right order.

6. Classes range from 90cm up to 1.15m so there is something for many levels of capability.

7. Fun. JAS is a wonderful way to blow away any winter cobwebs and get you and your horse revved up for the season ahead. See your friends, become reacquainted with burger vans and get excited about what’s coming up.

8. Your results are recorded on your BE record, so it’s easy to keep track of your performance.

9. You get to wear your cross-country colours and the cross-country follows straight on from the showjumping. No changing or hanging about getting nervous between phases! And you receive a time, so you know when you’ll be performing and can plan your day.

10. There is a final at Hartpury on 19 February with great training voucher prizes — the value is £500 for the winner of each class. And first prize in each qualifier class is £50.

11. Non-BE members can compete too (by paying an extra £5 on their entry fee). Riders need an associate registration and horses an equine registration, which are free.

Pony team hopefuly Tom Tulloch, 14, won the Baileys Jumping & Style (JAS) novice and open titles with 14.2hh Spirit VI at Bury Farm Equestrian Centre in Bucks last Saturday (22 February).

Tom was also second in the novice on the attractive grey Welsh-Arab-Connemara Trewithian Bracken, owned by the Dixon family.

“I can’t believe it,” said Tom, who joked he rarely wins anything. “I don’t think it gets better than this. Spirit’s bravery and jump is incredible. I just have to believe in him.

“Going into the novice I felt a bit nervous, as the course was much more testing than the qualifiers, but both ponies jumped their socks off. I’m so lucky to ride such amazingly brave ponies.”

Tom completed both rounds on his style mark in the novice, making the influential left turn after the road closed bounce look easy. In the open, Spirit pecked just before the Jump 4 Joy double, taking the top pole, but that was the only dodgy moment for the pair, who were the sole partnership to complete the 1.15m track inside the time.

In addition to support from his parents, Andrew (clerk of the course at Aintree) and Jancis (who has evented to four-star), Tom is trained by Jonquil Hemming and Tracy Tomlinson.

Judge Yogi Breisner was clearly impressed, giving Tom style scores of nine in the novice and five in the open on his winning pony, who is co-owned by the Tullochs with Rob Marshall. The only other rider in these sections to score sub-10 for style was Kylie Roddy (nine in the open).

Yogi was full of praise for the winner: “Tom rode very well. He was effective, yet quiet and neat. His lower leg stayed in a very good position throughout,” he said.

Event rider Gaby Cooke, 19, has received a surprise call-up to ride in the indoor cross-country at the British Open Show Jumping Championships (7-10 April).

For the first time this year, the top two finishers in the open jumping and style (JAS) final — held last Saturday (26 February) at Addington — qualified for the indoor cross-country.

Gaby (pictured) just missed out on the ticket, finishing third, but news has come in today that second-placed David Doe has decided not to go to the British Open. He will “focus his young horse and his commitment to the Racesafe-sponsored junior squad for the 2010 season”, according to a British Eventing press release.

His qualification therefore passes to Gaby and her ride, Northcroft Frontier. Gaby still intends to take the horse to the British Open indoor cross-country qualifier at Addington on Friday, in which the top three win a ticket to the British Open.

“I’m very excited,” said Gaby. “I was really going for it to qualify and I thought I’d left it to one last chance [at Addington]. It’ll be good to get the practice and concentrate on getting things right, not trying to qualify.

“Northcroft Frontier’s got an unusual style — he goes up on all fours, but he clears everything by feet. Although he’s 17.2hh, he’s fast and agile, so I’ve always thought he’d suit competitions like this, so hopefully we’ll do quite well if I can keep everything together.”

Gaby is based in Oakham, Rutland, and has been riding full-time since 2008. She was a member of the British junior squad at Thirlestane in 2008 with Northcroft Frontier and runner-up in the national under-21 championships at Weston that year.

The second British Open qualifier from the JAS Finals was Wills Goodhew, 18, who won the open JAS final on More Luck and is also looking forward to heading to the Birmingham NEC for the British Open.

The British Open has invited the top two placed competitors from the intermediate final of British Eventing’s (BE) Baileys Jumping and Style (JAS) series to compete at next year’s event.

Those placed first or second in the intermediate section will be given the opportunity to compete against some of the most famous names in eventing — former competitors include Zara Phillips, William Fox-Pitt and Oliver Townend — in the British Open indoor cross-country championship.

As previously, the top three from a wildcard show at Addington Manor Equestrian Centre in March will also qualify for the indoor cross-country championship.

Helena Pettit, managing director of British Open organisers Grandstand Event Management, said: “We are delighted to be working with BE as it has allowed us to open up the indoor cross-country at the British Open Show Jumping Championships by promoting the competition to a wider audience.

“This is beneficial in both promoting the sport to our equestrian audience and providing up-and-coming eventers with additional experience.

Last year’s winner of the JAS final, 17-year-old Eliza Sangster (pictured), thinks inviting next year’s JAS competitors to the British Open is an “exciting opportunity”.

“To be given the opportunity to compete against the biggest names in eventing would be an amazing experience and if I had been given the chance last year I certainly would have taken it,” she said.

The JAS series runs during January and February with the final being held at Addington Manor on 27 February.

The British Open Show Jumping Championships, held at Birmingham’s NEC, takes place from 7–10 April.

British Eventing and Equistro have finalised the calendar for their Jumping and Style (JAS) series in 2009.

Starting in January, there will be 11 qualifiers at indoor centres across the country, with the final on 1 March at Addington Manor.

The competition is set up as practice for the forthcoming eventing season, with a round of show jumps preceding a timed cross-country section. An accredited trainer awards style marks, which are added to any jumping penalties incurred.

To enter, visit www.britisheventing.com/jas. Forms are also available at competition venues or from the BE office. Competitors must also register with BE (free of charge) prior to December.

As a bonus, each JAS competitor will get a 50% discount on their first day-ticket at a 2009 BE event.

The new generation showed their seniors how to do it when riders aged 21 and under took the top three classes at the British Eventing Jumping And Style (JAS) final at Addington Manor last Sunday.

Junior European Champion Laura Collett, 17, led the way with a win in the open class on Christina Lakin’s Mercator Du Ry. Laura was also seventh in this final on Rayef, as well as fourth in the pre-novice and sixth in the novice on Fine World.

Gemma Tattersall, 21, also cranked up the pace to take the novice final with the day’s best style mark — she had a penalty score of just four out of 60 — to win on the six-year-old Springwatch Jackanapes. Gaby Cooke, 16, was triumphant in the pre-novice with Queen Emery.

The only final not won by a rider aged 21 and under was the intro, which went to Lucie Turner and Lexikon, although 14-year-old Megan Howard rode Tudor Legend into third place, behind Kate Honey and Fernhill City Girl in second.
