How to choose a winter riding coat

When choosing a new winter riding jacket, consider its intended use and, therefore, what style might suit you best. Water resistance is key if it doubles as a yard jacket; check for waterproof ratings. It’s also worth weighing up the benefits that one of the best long riding coats will bring – extra warmth and coverage against the elements while not getting in the way of riding or whatever you’re doing.

Look for technical materials for comfort and movement, and note any sustainable options. Features like taped seams, storm cuffs, plackets, rear vents, two-way zips, and leg straps (for long coats) enhance protection and comfort in the saddle.

Decide if you prefer a removable hood (on-ground use vs. riding safety) and ensure it has essential features like zipped pockets. The jacket’s look is also important for confidence while riding.

Who tested the best winter riding coats?

Our team of experienced testers, all of whom are regular riders and horse owners, rigorously tested a selection of riding coats. These coats were put through their paces in all weather conditions. The testing wasn’t limited to riding; our team also wore the coats while carrying out daily yard duties, and some even had them on during dog walks. This comprehensive approach ensures these winter riding coats were thoroughly evaluated both on and off the horse, giving us confidence in their performance during cold and wet weather adventures.

Waterproof ratings explained

A waterproof coat will give you protection from rain for a significant period of time, while a water-resistant material will prevent water penetration, but only to a certain level. If you’re a fair-weather rider who avoids riding in the rain then a water-resistant coat may be sufficient, but if you envisage yourself riding out or spending time at the yard in all weathers, a fully waterproof coat is the way to go.

Many manufacturers will provide waterproof ratings – and we’ve listed all the ratings we can get our hands on.

Waterproof ratings explained:

• 0–1,500mm = water resistant, suitable for very light rain
• 1,500–5000mm = waterproof, suitable for light to average rain
• Over 5,000mm = very waterproof, suitable for moderate to heavy rain
• Over 10,000mm = highly waterproof, suitable for heavy rain
• Over 20,000mm = extremely waterproof, suitable for torrential downpours

How can you tell when your waterproofing is wearing off?

If you notice the fabric of your coat is absorbing that water rather than repelling, it’s time to reproof it.

How to reproof a waterproof coat

Regular reproofing is essential for optimal performance as more recent waterproof jackets made without the environmentally harmful PFC chemicals, may saturate more quickly. Ariat Tempest Waterproof Insulated Parka

My first impressions of the Ariat Tempest long waterproof jacket were overwhelmingly positive, and they remain so after wearing it for a couple of months, including during a full week of sub-zero temperatures, which is unusual here in the UK. It has become my first-choice coat to wear to the stables during cold winter weather and I’ve received complements from friends on its appearance.

I particularly like the soft snug cuffs at the wrists, which prevent drafts going up the arms and help keep hands warm, while the outer arms are of sufficient length to protect the cuffs from getting wet in the rain. I’m also a big fan of the plush and quilted lining, which is really warm. I’ve rarely needed to put on a thicker jumper underneath it to deal with the cold.

The double-vented rear can be easily opened and shut with zips, making it equally suitable for riding as wearing around the yard. This coat is very comfortable to wear both in and out of the saddle, although I’ve found it is too warm for wear for a full schooling or jumping session. However, it is ideal for wearing out hacking on cold, inclement winter days, especially as it easily covers the top of two-thirds of my thighs, as well as the back of my saddle, while I am riding.

The jacket has plenty of pockets, which is always a plus for an equestrian jacket. On the outside there is one with a zip on the left chest, which I find useful for my phone, then two lower down on either side – one that opens at the top and secures with two press studs and then a diagonal one over the top of that with a zip.

I’ve found the diagonal ones a little awkward to open and close with one hand, while I’m always concerned about things falling out of pockets that are only secured with a flap and press studs. Also, because the pockets overlay each other, it’s not easy to know which pocket the item you are looking for is in, which can be annoying when you dive into one to get something and then realise it is in the other, however my ability to remember what I’ve put in each pocket has improved with time. There is also a pocket on the inside over the left chest, which is secured with a zip fastening.

The jacket comes with a removable and adjustable hood, which is secured with hidden press studs to maintain a stylish appearance and has the same plush lining as the body of the jacket. Once removed, there is a clever flap that covers the studs, which is secured via hook and loop fastenings to maintain the sleek appearance of the jacket. The size of the hood can be adjusted via a hidden toggle fastening at the rear of the hood. I can confirm the robustness of this elastic and toggle fastening after my horse got hold of said toggle and decided to tow me around the stable as a source of his own entertainment! Much to my relief, everything emerged unscathed as I had images of said toggle disappearing down his throat, never to be seen again…

I am a UK size 8, have the small size jacket on test and it is a good fit with room to wear a thick jumper underneath if needed. If you prefer your jacket to be nipped in around the waist, there is an internal elastic adjustment (shown above) so you can tailor the fit to your preference.

The jacket has washed well on a cold delicate cycle in my washing machine, coming out looking as good as new.

We also tested the AW24 version

Our products editor Franchesca Slack, also tested this jacket she is a UK size 12/14 and tested a size large, which gave her plenty of room to wear a thicker layer underneath if needed – which is rarely needed with the warm lining.

The features that she really loved included the faux-fur lined hood, neck and upper body, which kept her super cosy. She also liked that the hood can be adjusted by a toggle to prevent it falling down and this has proved to work even during gale-force winds.

Franchesca felt the coat offers good coverage in the saddle and was pleased that it doesn’t flap. This is the coat she grabs when she knows she’s going to be outside for long periods of time and the temperature is going to be low. It has also kept her dry dry during heavy downpours.

It is an expensive coat but it is worth the investment as it is designed to last and it really does keep you protected from the elements.

Verdict

*H&H Approved* With a RRP of £310, this isn’t the cheapest long winter riding jacket on the market, but is it stylish, really warm, with clever design elements and it currently looks as good as when it first arrived, so I would say it was worth the investment if your budget will stretch to it.

Aubrion Halcyon Mid Length Coat

This coat is very warm, so I’ve had to wait until colder UK winter temperatures arrived in order to test it properly, as I quickly overheated when wearing it on milder days, despite its high breathability rating of 5000g/m². It has an official waterproof rating of 5000mm and has kept me warm and dry in both heavy rain and early winter snow.

I am a UK size 8/10 and the small is a good fit.

The bottom half of the coat is lined with a non-plush material and the whole coat is lightly quilted for warmth. The robust outer material is more bulky than some other winter coats I’ve tried, which makes it less practical for wearing during doing active yard tasks like mucking out and grooming. But it has kept me warm and dry while poo picking fields, checking field horses, turning horses out, etc.

I have hacked out in rain and snow while wearing it and I stayed warm and dry on my body with the soft plush material on the collar making it comfortable to wear when the zip is fully fastened at the top. I was concerned that the two-way plastic zip, which has no external protection in the form of a storm flap, might leak, but I’m pleased to say that hasn’t been the case so far.

While it is designed to wear both in and out of the saddle, thanks to the single rear riding vent that is easy to open and a two-way zip in front, the length of the coat means it only covers the top of thighs in the saddle so my knees did get wet, but it did a good job protecting the rear of the saddle.

There is a longer version of this coat available, which may be a better choice for riding out in inclement winter weather if you want to keep your legs and the front of the saddle dry. Although I have done some very quiet schooling in the arena while wearing this coat, I’ve found it too warm for doing anything more active than this in the saddle.

The hood is lined with the same plush material as the collar and body of the coat and attached via a zip, which makes it easy to remove. While it is adjustable via an elasticated drawstring, it isn’t big enough to put over your riding hat so I would recommend separating it from the coat when you are riding to remove any risk of it getting caught on something.

The wrist cuffs are quite large and thick and aren’t very close fitting around my narrow wrists, plus there is no additional adjustment option here, unlike the Mountain Horse Flash Deluxe Parka I’ve also been testing. The cuffs also poke out beyond the sleeve. I was concerned that the cuffs might allow drafts in or get wet, but when it is cold enough to wear this coat, I am also wearing a pair of winter gloves over the cuffs, so that hasn’t been an issue.

This coat has an inside chest pocket on the left, which is ideal for keep a mobile phone secure and dry, and is particularly convenient if you are right-handed. There are also two outer pockets with zip fastenings, that are of a good size and easy to use one-handed. The external branding is just a subtle rubberised logo on the left sleeve.

With a RRP of £129.99, this is one of the more economically priced winter riding coats on the market and I’ve found it to be a very functional item for doing essential horse care tasks during the winter.

I personally prefer the Ariat Tempest Waterproof Insulated Parka that I tested two years ago, which has a more stylish appearance and still going strong after two winters of regular wear, but it is in a very different price category at +£300. Now that I have options, I’m tending to wear the Ariat Insulated Parka when attending shows or training, walking dogs with friends and other similar public outings, and wearing the Aubrion Halcyon coat to do daily jobs around the stables.

I haven’t yet washed the Aubrion Halcyon coat, but it is described as machine washable at 30 degrees. I’ll report back once I’ve done that, but as yet, I haven’t had the need as any dirt has been easy to sponge off.

Verdict

A practical coat at a very reasonable price for doing outside tasks around the yard as well as hacking in cold and wet winter weather.

If you’re looking for something to keep you warm while you’re riding, then a quilted jacket is a great option. The best short quilted riding jackets are more comfortable than a bulky waterproof yard jacket, and are really easy to move in — ideal for when you’re in the saddle. Many aren’t waterproof, so if you hack or ride in an outdoor arena, this is something to consider when you’re making a choice. “This jacket was quite plain in design, although the back vent made it flattering. This jacket did come up quite small, but I found it flexible, so it was easy to ride in as well as doing everyday jobs in. It was water resistant in light showers, but I did get quite damp in anything more than that. However, it was very wind resistant. I like the navy colour, but I think more colour on the jacket would make it more appealing. The red zip is a nice touch, but it can’t easily be seen. I really liked the fold-away hood as it means you can easily put it away when riding. I would advise buying this jacket in a size up from usual.”

This coat looked elegant and light, but I was concerned it might not be that waterproof.

Overview of performance

I was proved completely wrong on the waterproof front as it kept the rain at bay. I found it lovely to wear and lived up to what the description promised. I found it was too smart to wear around the yard and kept it for teaching and for watching at ringside instead.

Likes and dislikes

I liked how comfortable and smart it is and that it kept me warm and dry, although I did not find the fit particularly flattering.

Verdict

This is a really lovely, quality coat to add over the top of your normal clothing.

I am a fan of the style and fit, but it is expensive so more of an investment piece, but it looks like it will last.

First impressions

When I first tried this jacket on the fit was comfortable and stylish, but slightly generous in size. I liked the simple yet quality feel of the garment.

Overview of performance

This jacket kept me really warm and protected me really well against the wind. It was shower proof and great for dealing with the varying English weather. Although it was good to ride in, I tended to keep it for teaching, wearing around the yard and at shows.

Likes and dislikes

I really like that the hood is generously sized, covering my ears and all the top of my head at all times. I also love that the fact that is can be put away easily when not in use. The pockets are really big without being too bulky.

Verdict

*Best in Test* This is a really comfortable jacket, which is fashionable while not being ‘over the top’. If you prefer a more tailored fit, I would suggest that you go down a size.

The pockets could be slightly deeper, but I like that it was very breathable and waterproof, and the added reflective features on the jacket are a bonus.

This jacket was warm, waterproof, lightweight and it fitted very well off a horse. It was true to size and I loved all its features, particularly the hood and neck when the wind picked up.

Rob’s likes/dislikes:

I like how this jacket was true to size, fitted well, and all the features it came with, such as the hood, the pockets and the cuffs, but it is better suited to wearing off the horse then it is for riding in.

Verdict

I would recommend this as a sporty jacket for general wear, rather than for riding.

This jacket is super smart. I liked the tan stitches, quilted pattern across shoulders and matching taped seams inside. It was also a lovely fit.

Overview of performance:

I found this jacket very robust and comfortable to wear all day. The fabric it was made out of meant that I never felt restricted, but as the same time I felt nice and cosy. The pockets were secure and overall I felt very stylish without being too over the top.

Tamsin’s likes/dislikes:

I particularly liked the fit, plus the zips on the sleeves stops the jacket from falling down over your hands when doing jobs such as picking out hooves. I did, however, dislike the popper attachment for the hood as I found that the hood flapped when riding unless I removed it completely, which meant it then wasn’t available quickly if I was caught in a shower.

Verdict

A very smart jacket that I would recommend to a horsey or non-horsey friend.

The Toggi Novak is a stylish jacket that has a flattering silhouette and is super practical with taped seams and a durable water repellent finish. Tamsin’s first impressions:

This jacket was quite plain in design, with a back vent making it look flattering and unique. It did seem quite lightweight so I thought it would be good for riding in, but that it may not the warmest.

Overview of performance:

This jacket did come up quite small, but I found it flexible, so it was easy to ride in as well as doing everyday jobs in. It was water resistant in light showers, but I did get quite damp in anything more than that. However, it was very wind resistant.

Tamsin’s likes/dislikes:

I like the navy, but I think more colour on the jacket would make it more interesting. The red zip is a nice touch but unfortunately it can’t easily be seen. I really liked the fold-away hood as it means you can easily put it away when riding. I would advise buying this jacket in a size up from usual.

Tamsin’s first impressions:

This jacket is made of a very lightweight material, and I found it an interesting colour choice as it was almost translucent and what you are wearing underneath shows through the jacket.

Overview of performance:

This jacket sustained heavy rain and I was still dry at the end of the day. It was extremely lightweight and therefore easy to wear. It was very thin, so I found myself wearing a coat underneath if it was chilly, but on warmer showery days it was useful as a waterproof layer that didn’t cause me to overheat.

Tamsin’s likes/dislikes:

I like that additional layers can be worn underneath, which can then removed as required. I am not a fan of the colour or look of this jacket, as it is not particularly flattering, but it does the basic job of keeping the wearer dry very well. It’s not the one to buy if you’re hoping to look glamorous, and I do think it is quite expensive.

A smart, functional jacket which looks very practical for both working around the yard and riding in.

Overview of performance

This jacket performed really well when used working in the yard. It has elastic cuffs which prevent the sleeves from getting in the way when cleaning and filling water buckets etc. It has very useful pockets – a small inside pocket perfect for a mobile phone and two normal outside pockets which were really useful for keeping gloves in. It was waterproof and warm in rainy and windy conditions.

Likes and dislikes

I really like how lightweight and practical this jacket is while remaining warm and waterproof. The zip is very easy to use, pockets very useful and generally it is a very well thought through jacket for practical use. I would have liked it to have a tucked away hood, and the sizing is generous, which is probably due to it being unisex.

Verdict

A very practical and durable jacket, which offers great value for money at a very reasonable price.

The best softshell jackets for horse riders are designed to cope with those cool and showery days that are so common in Britain during spring, summer and autumn. A great softshell jacket will be lightweight, but able to cope with a blustery shower, keeping the wearing warm and dry without overheating. Some jackets come with hoods, which may be removable, or designed so they can be tucked away when not needed. Other nice touches include good size pockets, preferably with zips so you don’t find you’ve lost a glove or pair of keys when you need them.

I personally don’t like the extra hand warmers attached to the sleeves as it doesn’t really suit the elegant style of the jacket and they got in the way of my gloves. I really like the rose gold detailing, which looks stylish with the pale grey fabric, and the fact that the rose gold zip was double ended so it didn’t gather up when sat down.

Verdict

I would recommend this jacket to a friend, but the sizing is generous so you might want to order a size down from normal

I found it an essential piece of equipment for daily training as it is windproof and waterproof. It is really comfortable and stretchy while riding or working around the yard. It is a very lightweight jacket with a nice appearance. The jacket that I tested was navy blue with white details around the zips, which gives a stylish and professional look.

The fabric is as described, you can certainly feel its benefits from wearing it. I tested it in heavy rain and it kept me completely dry and warm. I really like the style. It’s a great mid-season jacket.

I definitely recommend this jacket to anyone from professionals to leisure horse riders.

Our reviewer liked all the elements of this smart waterproof jacket and found very little to dislike about it... apart from the price

When I first saw this jacket I absolutely fell in love with the bright Kingfisher blue colour and the black detailing around the pockets. When I picked it up it felt very lightweight and I was concerned that it wouldn’t live up to its ‘waterproof’ claims – very few jackets do in my experience, with leaking across the shoulders and in the crease of the arms being typical problem areas.

However after wearing it during an hour-long jumping lesson in rain that varied from drizzle to downpour, neither of these areas were a problem. The outside material was soaking wet and I did feel a little damp when I took the jacket off, but I think that was partly because the rain had worked itself way down the inside of the collar at the back of my neck, and partly because I had been working hard and had got rather warm, despite its breathable properties.

The stylish softshell outer is combined with a microfleece inner, which is both warm and windproof, making it an ideal choice for autumn and spring. I wouldn’t describe it as warm enough for the depths of winter, although it is warmer than I first expected it to be, but it’s ideal for the changing seasons and has become my go-to jacket of choice when it’s damp or windy, but not icy cold.

There is a warning not to use the outer pockets for items you want to keep dry. However there is a pocket with a vertical zip on the inside chest area, so you do have somewhere safe and dry to store your phone. I’ve found the outer pockets fine for keys and the like.

The jacket is a size 8 and I’m an 8/10 so I would say it’s fairly generously sized as I could comfortably wear a t-shirt plus a fitted jumper/sweater underneath. Because of the microfleece lining, I found tops with some ‘slip’ were most comfortable to wear underneath and helped avoided bunching of the microfleece lining around the wrists. The wrists have adjustable Velcro fastening with good quality rubber tabs, that haven’t got clogged with hay and shavings.

The material is quite stretchy, making it very comfortable to ride and do yard work in. When it first gets wet the outer puckers slightly, which looks quite unusual (see pic below), but it is quick to dry from damp, which is another benefit.

I typically do not like wearing a hood, however this jacket has challenged my views on this. The thin hood is very easy to pull out of its pocket within the collar and has a clever stiffened peak, which helps keep the water off your face. The elastic can also be adjusted via toggles ensuring that it doesn’t blow off at the first gust of wind – I guess that’s Musto’s sailing experience coming to the fore there. Equally, you don’t have to remove the jacket to tuck it securely back into the collar, which is another bonus.

It have found this jacket has washed well, although I should warn you that it does look very strange (think screwed up dish rag) when you get it out of the washing machine! Don’t panic (as I did the first time) – it will look fine once it’s dried out, although it does take quite a while to do so. Washing following the instructions doesn’t appear to have affected the waterproof qualities of the jacket.

So do I think this jacket is worth it’s price tag? I think it’s fair to say that it isn’t cheap. But you’re paying for Musto’s knowledge and experience in using technical fabrics to combat the worst the weather can throw at you, as well as the fit and the label. It’s worn well during a six-month testing period, and still looks like new. So yes I think it is (and if you can find it somewhere to buy it discounted in a sale, then I’d recommend you snap it up before it sells out…)

The best waterproof riding jackets will deal with whatever the weather can throw at you, whether you’re hacking over the hills, teaching in an outdoor school or walking a cross-country course. From persistent drizzle to driving rain, the wet stuff will be more bearable with an effective outer layer.

The equation of warm + dry = happy is easy enough to understand when it comes to choosing a jacket, but technical jargon and endless options can soon cloud your judgement. Our handy buyer’s guide outlines some of the key features to keep in mind, detailing all you need to know to keep yourself well-covered.

Is it waterproof?

It sounds obvious, but your jacket must be waterproof to keep you dry. If it says ‘showerproof’ or ‘water resistant’ on the label, it may not cut the mustard in heavy or prolonged downpours.

Waterproofing is generally achieved in one of two ways – a membrane system on the inside of the material, or a water-repellent treatment on the outside. The inner membrane tends to offer the best balance between being waterproof and breathable, with lightweight membranes such as Gore-Tex keeping rain out while allowing vapours to escape. Look for taped seams to avoid water penetration through vulnerable areas, particularly around the shoulders.

Treated outers will also do a pretty good job at keeping rain out. Waxed or oiled cottons do tend to be a little heavier to wear, however.

Waterproof and breathable coats will eventually need re-proofing, which is easy enough with specialist products that can be put in the washing machine. Re-waxing a coat is a messier and more time-consuming job, but should restore its waterproof properties.

With a waterproof outer shell sorted, it’s time to think about the inner layer. A simple mesh lining may be sufficient for warmer seasons, keeping the shell away from your skin and enhancing the breathability of the jacket. For chillier days you’ll need an insulating inner layer. Lining options include fleece or microfleece (its softer, thinner counterpart), cotton or quilted polyfill. Removable inner layers that can be changed with the seasons will allow you greatest flexibility.

It can be difficult to judge just how warm a jacket will be. The level of insulation is one factor, while the wind-resistance of the outer is another. Don’t judge a jacket by its weight, however, as some of the warmest and most effect modern materials are the lightest.

Your need for warmth will largely be dictated by your level of physical activity and the conditions you’ll be out in. There’s no doubt that being dry is the key to comfort. Fabrics can be rated for their waterproofing and breathability, so it may be worth looking into these technical aspects if you’re out in all weathers. Otherwise, make quality materials and construction your priority to keep rain out and warmth in.

The long and the short of it

Coat length deserves serious consideration, as this will affect not just your comfort level but your ability to carry out certain activities.

Yard work will be easier in a short-cut model, which allows more freedom to bend and flex, but a longer style can be a winner on rainy rides. The fuller ‘skirt’ effect will keep the miserable drip-drip of water away from your saddle, so your lower half will stay considerably drier. Thighs can become surprisingly cold, too, in frost or wind, so keeping them covered can boost your internal heating.

If you’re really putting in the miles you might benefit from a stockman-style full-length coat that’s cut to accommodate your saddle. Good models will offer sufficient coverage without acres of flapping fabric, with thoughtful design points such as straps to keep the coat close to your legs and a storm cape across your shoulders for foul weather protection.

Whatever the length, think about fit – will the coat restrict your movement in the yard or saddle? Four-way stretch materials are worth considering, along with riding-specific designs cut for fast canterwork or jumping. Gussets, panels and rear vents will all allow extra freedom to move.

The overall shape is down to personal taste. Belted waist or blouson-style, classic or fashion forward – the choice is yours. While a sack-like effect is never flattering, something too tight can sometimes ride up – plus a slightly more generous fit will create room for warm body air to circulate.

Picking pockets

Now for the all-important fastenings, which can make life so much easier if cleverly designed.

Zips are usually hardwearing and easy to use, especially the chunkier ones, but should ideally be sealed, covered or water-resistant. Two-way zips are a handy feature if you’re riding, allowing you to open up the coat at the bottom – just check that the zip won’t scratch the pommel of your saddle. Velcro fastenings tend to be fuss-free, but can become clogged with hay and horsehair if neglected and lose their ‘stick’.

Useful design extras include a high collar for draught exclusion, wrist and waist adjusters for a snug fit, and a drip strip at the hem to guide water away from the lining. Try to visualise the worst weather scenario when choosing a coat – knitted cuffs may be cosy in the dry, for example, but will they soak up water like a sponge in the wet?

A hood is handy, as long as it’s adjustable and well-shaped with a stiffened peak. Some will even fit over a helmet, or detach or roll away if conditions are too windy. Pockets can be deep and voluminous or fleece-lined to warm hands, as long as they’re protected from rain and easy to access. Pockets that fasten securely closed are a godsend when it comes to keeping phones and keys where you need them. A few tasteful reflective strips aren’t a bad idea, either, for the dark nights.

Before you buy, check the jacket’s care instructions. The ability to put it through the washing machine might be a bonus if you plan to wear it anywhere else than at the yard.

A final point worth considering is the ‘rustle-factor’ of your intended purchase. A crackly finish could be the undoing of a nervous horse – bringing you home from a hack far quicker than planned. Noiseless fabrics are available!

Our reviewer liked this stylish and comfortable jacket and found herself wearing it both on and off the horse

I have tested the Ariat Ladies Cloud 9 Jacket in black. This type of jacket is not normally what I would go for, the soft arms and the quilted body is more of a sporty look that I am used to. Although, I was excited to try this well-made, quality product.

When on, this jacket is flattering and stylish but very comfortable and doesn’t restrict your movement at all. It is short and therefore feels great in the saddle. The jersey sleeves meant that I have complete freedom of my arms. I felt very comfortable when doing dressage, showjumping and cross-country training.

There is a secure, robust zip up the middle and two perfect-sized zip-up pockets for your phone. In the past when riding, I have struggled to find a place for my phone that isn’t impossible to retrieve or risks it falling out — however, there is no such problem with this jacket.

I also loved the flexibility of this product. I can wear it during the summer, with the benefit of a long sleeve and good pockets, without getting hot. It also has performed as a great layer under a larger coat due to the non-restrictive jersey arms and lightweight but warm body.

I feel that this product will be most helpful to me during the winter as a layer. I have also wearing it off the horse, especially when I have gone on a rare run

I have thoroughly enjoyed testing this jacket for the past seven months. It has steadily become one of my favorites and the most used out of all of my jackets.

Upon receiving and inspecting the jacket, I was dubious as to whether the jacket would live up to its claims and keep me warm, however the 120 gram polyester insulated lining and Jersey lined pockets meant that it excelled at keeping me warm. The 100% polyester water repellent finish, sealed seams and fully detachable, peaked hood ensure that you are kept dry even in heavy rain.

The colour (navy) is smart and stylish. I also like the discreet branding (metal badge on sleeve). The jacket length is ideal for riding and the high quality YKK® 2-way front zipper allows you to unzip front the top or bottom of the jacket at ease while mounted. The jacket also features an internal media pocket with a rubber outlet for headphones.

I found that the sizing was accurate. I had chosen an XS and found it was comparative to a UK 8-10. The jacket has been designed to offer both a relaxed and tailored fit achievable by adjusting the waist cinch inside the jacket.

It’s incredibly lightweight, comfortable to wear. I was thrilled to find the storm cuffs, a tighter lycra layer inside the sleeve cuffs that keeps out wind and rain For me this is a highly desirable feature. I feel that this jacket is a great all-rounder and wouldn’t look out of place either at a competition or everyday on the yard.

It is machine washable which is a valuable feature for equestrian clothing.

Finally, I would highly recommend this jacket, it’s smart, lightweight, warm, waterproof and comfortable. With the brands and jackets available on the market currently the product is good value for money, however the price would make this jacket less affordable for those with a smaller budget.

After using the jacket I feel that the overall quality of the jacket is excellent and increasing the hood size would improve the performance of the jacket even further.

This large sized softshell jacket is stylishly cut, roomy and comfortable. It has a good zip and good closure around the cuffs. The jacket is well made and has a premium product feel about it. It is excellent to wear on its own with a t-shirt when the weather is mild, but needs a fleece or pullover when the temperature on the thermometer drops, making it a good basis for a layering system.

It will keep you dry in a quick shower but not in any prolonged rain and you would be wise to take a lightweight waterproof with you as well. The material is very flexible and moves along with you so it is great to wear for anything a little energetic, like being dragged along by your naughty horse!

A very useful feature of this jacket is the little inner buttonhole, which allows you to thread your headphones into the pocket keeping your Mp3 player safely zipped up. Another useful feature is the wallet pocket handily along the zip. It has elastic pulls inside the two main pockets that tighten the bottom edge of the jacket to keep the wind out. The positioning of these elastic pulls is particularly good, as you don’t have loops of elastic flapping around the bottom of your jacket.

I have used the jacket while cycling. It’s good but not quite long enough at the back for anything other than popping to the shops or the pub. There are no real downsides to this product, apart from the need for another layer when it gets chilly, if the manufacturers added a zip-out fleece liner it would be perfect.

Our reviewer found the jacket useful for mild, dry weather

I love the appearance of this jacket and it is very comfortable to wear for long periods of time. However, it is not very warm so is best for use in autumn/spring or on summer evenings.

I once made the mistake of wearing the jacket during a heavy downpour and got soaked. It is described as showerproof, but I would only wear it in very light rain. However, it dries quickly and has stayed pretty clean despite wearing to muck out as well as ride.

It’s practically fluorescent (I sampled the coat in “fire orange” but it also comes in black) and has a reflective Musto logo and stripe detailing, so is a good alternative to a high-vis tabard for hacking. The jacket was also very comfortable and breathable for schooling.

The jacket features two useful zipped pockets and a central zip closure. It has Neoprene cuffs that prevent cold draughts going up the sleeves. However, the scooped hem can leave you feeling a little chilly.

I tested the coat in a size 10. This is my usual dress size and it fitted well and wasn’t at all bulky.

Verdict

I would recommend this jacket as a useful addition to your riding wardrobe if you're not short of cash

The Hac Tac long ladies jacket is great for those frosty mornings and chilly evenings. The parka style coat features a cosy faux fur trim around the hood and a buttoned storm flap to help keep out the cold. I love the faux fur trim – it looks very luxurious. The jacket also has a double zip fastening, two zipped front pockets that are great for keeping your valuables safe, a soft brushed lining on the neck and reflective Hac Tac branding and piping. This makes it a good coat to wear throughout winter, especially on the roads or when you need to be seen.

The coat is very good value and is warm and comfortable. I have worn it on the coldest of days and it’s like taking your duvet out with you, as it’s so snug. I especially like the elasticated cuffs as you can pull them over your thumbs to keep the cold out. The coat is a good length and comes to just above the knees, so I am truly well wrapped up.

I feel that the coat is a bit too nice to wear at the yard and the length may restrict movement when you’re trying to bend down and fill your haynets etc. I think the coat is better suited for dog walks etc. The reflective strips and branding gives the coat a sporty look and the coat has a subtle shine that adds to this. This puts me off wearing it out to smarter non-sporting events, however it’s perfect to take to a horse show when I’m stuck standing around watching. My only criticism is that this doesn’t look the most expensive of materials, but then it is a great value coat so I can’t complain.

The coat comes up true to size, if not a little bit on the larger size. I am a UK size 10-12 and have this coat in a size 10. It fits me well, however it is a little tight around the chest, but I have this problem with most clothing!

One thing to watch out for is feathers poking out of the seams. This has happened with all down filled coats that I have owned, but I’d recommend keeping an eye open for it and pulling them out so that it doesn’t look untidy. If I were to recommend any feedback it would be nice to see the jacket in a matte-finish and perhaps an option without the white branding if preferred.

Overall I would recommend this jacket to a friend looking for a great value, snug coat to keep them toasty when battling the elements.

If you have any warm winter coats hanging unused in your hallway, then the organisers of a charitable appeal would like to hear from you.

Country Coats To Syria was set up by Richard Walton and former master of the Fitzwilliam George Bowyer with the aim of sending the piles of unused coats in people’s homes to those in need.

According to the International Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC), there were an estimated 7.6million people internally displaced within Syria in July 2015. Half of these are thought to be children.

According to the BBC, the average minimum temperature in the country in January is 2C.

“I was coming back from the Midland Game Fair and listening to the news — every day we hear about Syria,” Richard told H&H.

“I knew winter was coming in Syria, it has a very similar climate to our own hard winter, coupled with that I know all my friends have spare winter coats.

“So I thought ‘how can I get the two together?’”

Following his “eureka” moment, Richard and H&H hunting correspondent George contacted the charity Syria Relief.

“They have a proven, tried and tested pipeline to get equipment and clothing to Syria,” Richard added.

The pair sort and bag the coats before passing them onto the charity, which then arranges for them to be delivered to those in need.

Coats of all shapes and sizes in good condition are needed.

“We are specifically looking for outdoor winter coats — the sort of coat that if it was your family, you would want them to wear,” said Richard.

He added they have been speaking to hunts about having collections at their Boxing Day meets as well as racecourses and would also like to hear from individuals interested in running collections.

“It has been very well received,” he said. “We are humbled by the generosity of the rural community.”

Balios rider tracking device

Balios is a connected device that attaches to the girth of the saddle. It automatically tracks the intensity of a training session and the horse’s movement. The data is then sent to a free smartphone app via Bluetooth, allowing the rider to train more effectively. The app creates a report summarizing all of the collected data, which can be shared with your coach or vet, allowing all parties to adapt their training or treatment to the needs of the horse. The data from the app can also alert to the first signs of injury or fatigue to the horse, contributing to a more horse-friendly training.

New jacket regulations are among the rule changes that will come into force at British Dressage (BD) competitions.

Under current rules it is up to the organiser or judge to decide whether riders may go jacket- less in extreme heat. However the new rule leaves the decision down to the rider.

“In regular competitions, riders may choose to ride without jackets and wear a fitted, plain, conservative-coloured waistcoat,” the new rule states.

“If no jacket is worn a suitable long/short-sleeved shirt that fastens at the neck (white or cream, and not bright or multi-coloured) with a tie, American collar or correctly fastened stock must be worn.”

Paul Graham from BD confirmed that riders can ride without a jacket or waistcoat if they feel it is that hot.

Competing without a jacket at championships, regionals, Area Festivals, Premier Leagues and High Profile shows must still be approved by the organiser and judge.

The organisation’s jacket rules were debated on the BD online forum this summer.

The “boil in the bag” thread received more than five pages of comments.

One member said they had had enough of “peeling” their jacket off between classes, then putting it back on again.

Another questioned how many other sports require competitors to “dress up quite this much” in hot weather.

The rules, which come into effect on 1 December, also cover the colour of jackets.

Jackets can now be in “any conservative colour in muted tones”. Before jackets had to be a “dark colour”, such as black, navy, bottle green, charcoal grey or brown.

But jackets must not be “distracting” for the judge and cannot be of bright, fluorescent or garish colour.

As well as the hat safety regulations, headwear must also comply with altered colour guidelines.

Extreme heat planning

The rule change will come as a relief to many, as this summer competitors were warned to take precautions if riding in the heat. Charlotte Fry suffered in extreme temperatures at the European Young Rider Dressage Championships in Vidauban, France (1-5 July).

“It was between 35 and 40°C and after the individual test on the hottest day, I got off my horse and collapsed,” said Charlotte, 19.

“Normally I am fine in heat, but during a test you give it everything and then when you stop, your adrenalin dips and it really hit me. I had been a bit wobbly after the team test, as had other people.”

For the kür the following day, Charlotte made sure she was better prepared.

“I drank water all day and Dad put my jacket in the freezer with cold packs on it to keep it cool until just before I went into the arena,” she said. “It wasn’t as hot anyway, and I went earlier in the day as well. I definitely learnt from the experience.”

This showjumping jacket looks the part but may be a little warm for the hottest of summer days

This jacket is only available in a navy blue with lighter blue collar and patches on the elbows, in sizes 34 to 42in chest. While it’s described as navy, I’d say it’s closer to royal blue. It’s certainly a lot brighter than my navy jacket I use for dressage.

I really liked the fit of this jacket. It was flattering, without being restrictive and the length was fashionable without being so short that I felt was constantly flashing my backside at all and sundry. The arms were a good length and the stretch in the material made it very comfortable to wear.

I am fairly conservative in my choice of competition clothing and although I liked the light blue collar, I wasn’t totally convinced by the elbow patches. However, every time I’ve worn it to go showjumping I’ve received positive comments from others at the show, which has served to convince me that it’s ideal for its target audience.

The zip pockets serve to aid the slimline appearance, while also ensuring that your lorry keys/phone/cash remain where you put them! And the black and silver horsehead buttons are a further stylish touch.

My only complaint about this jacket is its breathability, or lack of it. Admittedly I have worn it showjumping on some of the warmest days of the summer, but every time I took the jacket off I felt wet across the top of my back/shoulders and my arms were clammy, although I didn’t feel like I was overheating while I was riding.

I’m not sure if the washing instructions label is missing from my jacket, but I couldn’t find one anywhere. So without any guidelines I washed the jacket on a 30-degree coloured cycle in my washing machine with my standard detergent. I was please and relieved when it came out looking like new.

I like this jacket. On first impressions I thought it’s really stylish and very lightweight for a winter jacket, and something I would wear at an event rather than every day at the yard.

This black padded jacket is a limited edition line from the Horseware Platinum collection, its 100% nylon and filled with duck down. The branding is discreet with a HP badge on the sleeve and a small badge on the back. It has a zip that runs to the top of the collar to keep the wind out and two outside pockets with stud fastenings and an inside pocket. It comes in a range of sizes from XS to XXL and the sizing is accurate with XS being a UK 8 – 10. It also has an adjustable waistband to create a more fitted look. Its machine washable but better tumble

dried due to the duck down fill.

It’s very lightweight, comfortable to wear and kept me warm riding in the cold, however it’s not suitable for wet weather due to the down fill, and also I don’t think it would be that hard wearing if worn every day for general stable duties.

In summary I would recommend this jacket, it’s stylish, lightweight, warm and comfortable, however being part of the Platinum collection it does come with a slightly higher price tag!

A suggestion to improve the product would be to have a least one zipped internal pocket.

If you are looking for a stylish ladies jacket to keep you warm this winter the Belvedere jacket is a good choice

I loved the electric blue colour of this jacket (it also comes in black or sunrise pink) and has a tailored feminine cut – it is a touch longer than other winter jackets I have had previously but is still short enough to comfortably ride in. The soft down fill keeps you lovely and warm without being overly bulky.

The jacket features a generous size removable hood with faux fur trim to keep the wind out on cold days. I would have liked it if there had been one or two more fastenings to keep the faux fur on the hood as on windy days the removable fur felt slightly insecure. However I really liked the fact that both elements of the hood could be removed as I preferred to ride without the hood on windy days and the faux fur wouldn’t be to everybody’s taste. The jacket has good sized pockets which are perfect to keep your mobile phone, keys etc. safe while you’re at the yard. One feature I particularly liked was the extra high fleece lined collar which really helps keep the cold wind out. The jacket also has Lycra cuffs to make sure you have no gap from the sleeve of your jacket to your gloves. There are also magnets on the front panel that goes over the two way zip, these are much more stylish that traditionally popper fastenings.

I throughly tested this jacket by standing out in a field for three hours on a cold Saturday in January to try to find out how my horse was escaping from his field. This jacket kept me nice and warm and I especially appreciated the hood! I have also regularly ridden in this jacket and also wore it to a jumping clinic it is perfectly comfortable to ride in.

The medium sizing came up as I expected and I would say would equate to a UK 12-14.

This jacket is machine washable and on the whole has washed well however a few threads have appeared on the seems but nothing that would hinder the effectiveness of the jacket.

In summary if you are looking for a stylish ladies jacket to keep you warm this winter the Belvedere jacket is a good choice. It may be priced at the slightly higher end of the market but I feel the jacket has enough additional features like the lovely extra high fleece collar, the cut and overall look to justified its price.

Good comfortable fit with good arm length, which is a bonus for tall people. The brown colour is good for country pursuits as not everyone is a fan of garish shades.

Waterproofing and breathability are excellent it has kept my dry through many heavy downpours.

The plethora of pockets (there are 14) is a great feature and the large inside pocket is designed to take a full sized OS map, but I found it will also nicely accommodate a 7” kindle Fire or an ipad mini.

The draw-cord bottom is a good feature and can be pulled tight to stop the wind blowing underneath. Although it is designed as a field jacket the addition of expandable side vents would turn it into a fantastic riding jacket for long winter and spring hacks, as it stands it is perfect for visiting a show or a competition. It’s much too nice to muck out in though.

Overall it is an excellent outdoor jacket, and my first choice for a long walk. I would definatly consider the brand again.

I’ve always liked the look of soft shell jackets but never owned one, so I was excited to receive this one for testing. Mine was in steel, with red trimmings, but there is also a navy version — with emerald trimmings — available on the website, which is perhaps even smarter.

My only criticism of the appearance is that some people might prefer not to have Harry Hall written so large down their arm, although this didn’t bother me.

I found the jacket really useful. The coat I wear in wet weather is not particularly thick and warm, so I’m always trying to cram layers under it in the winter. As it’s also not large, this often results in me looking like a stuffed turkey, with thick fleece showing at the cuffs and bottom.

This jacket completely solved this problem, as I was able to wear it over a T-shirt and sweatshirt, then put the waterproof coat over the top. It served as a fantastic layer for warmth, while the snug fit meant I was more comfortable than previously.

When it was not so cold or wet, I also wore it as a top layer for riding, either over a T-shirt or a T-shirt and sweatshirt. And for in-between days, I sometimes topped it with a gilet.

The fit of the jacket was very good overall, but it was a little tight on the lower arms, below the elbow. Although it was fine when I was only wearing a T-shirt under it, as soon as I had a sweatshirt on, if felt a little close there.

My first impressions of this product was that it was a natty, lightweight, fitted jacket with covered sturdy-looking zips and discreet pockets. Harry Hall boasts versatility: this looks as though it could be worn out sailing, in town, around the yard and out hacking.

It was a snug fit, with great details: a broad shoulder vent and bum flap. There’s an elasticated waist band at the back with fastenings to tighten or loosen, depending on what you’re wearing underneath, and soft lining to the collar, which can be zipped and snapper fastened up to the chin – good for chilly mornings. Great detail: a two-way zip to fasten the jacket at the front, and neat plackets to cover the zips, plus the cleverly cut collar that allows room for shoulder movement while staying snug. Outer shell and lining is made from 100% polyester and can be machine washed.

It’s a great fit and easy to wear. I really liked the shaped elbows and velcro-fittings to the wrists, which allow for maximum arm movement without the sleeves riding up. It survived a muckheap workout (the most testing activity for jackets) with flying colours.

Ideal as a jacket to wear around the yard, as it looks and feels great, the closest to chic an everyday

jacket comes. Surprisingly wind-resistant and warmer than its weight suggests. It is not as rain-proof as I would have liked (after half an hour in late spring rain I began to feel distinctly damp, and switched to my wax overcoat).

The cobalt blue is a little bright and shows the dirt – the navy/emerald is more discreet (although out of stock when I checked the Harry Hall website).

The jacket was a beautiful fit; I am a size 10 but the 12 allows for a jumper underneath; it also allows for movement across the back.

I would recommend to anyone who likes a good choice of outerwear and has cash to spare; and for anyone who has a smart yard.

The toggle that join the drawstring around the hood is fiddly; I found it kept popping open; I’d like more choice of colours; does one really need five pockets?

Overall this jacket is lightweight and stylish, well-made and looks good; colour and small quibbles aside, this is a great looking jacket for spring and autumn, but not quite all-weather enough for this reviewer.

This is a smart navy blue winter jacket with a hood. My first impression of this jacket was that it would be a snug fit although it I am normally a size 12 to 14 (I was testing a size 14). However once on, this did fit perfectly well.

and found it extremely light and easy to work in.

With a light padded lining and a detachable hood, it proved itself waterproof and practical for keeping warm and dry whilst working on the yard. In addition to two external pockets, there is an inside pocket which is very handy for keeping a mobile phone safe from the elements.

Smart and washable, this jacket kept its colour and shape after washing while being practical and lightweight to work in.

My recommendations are that the size is relatively snug so if the intention is to wear this with heavy layers underneath, go for a larger size. The pockets are not huge but big enough for a mobile phone and keys which keep the jacket light.
