‘Knight in shining armour’ trucker comes to the rescue of stranded rider on main road

A lorry driver who came to the rescue of a rider stranded on a dual carriageway with a blown tyre has been hailed a “knight in shining armour”.

Coach and stud owner Karen Raine was on her own in a 3.5t lorry with one horse on board when she had a blowout on the A585 near the M55 on 28 April. She called her breakdown provider but was told it might take an hour and a half for help to arrive.

“I wasn’t very far from home,” she told H&H. “As I turned the corner at the traffic lights, I heard the bang, got a few hundred yards from the junction and had to stop, but I was in a live lane.

“The breakdown said ‘Have you got a spare tyre?’ I was only in the little wagon, and I said I wouldn’t even know where to look for it. They said they’re normally underneath but there was no way I was getting under the wagon with everyone coming flying past me.”

Karen said the driver, of an articulated lorry, pulled up in front of her and got out.

“He asked if I was all right and if I had a spare tyre and I said I didn’t know but I wasn’t going to go under the back like that, and he got back in his wagon,” she said. “I thought he was going, but he didn’t. He went back to the lights, did a U-turn and came and blocked the lane I was kind of stranded in, then got under, found the spare and managed to get it off. So by the time the breakdown got there, he was more or less done.”

Karen said the situation had felt very precarious but once the huge lorry was behind hers, she was protected from the passing traffic.

“They had to give me room then, because he had all his flashers on, he was a big artic with a machine on the back so they couldn’t miss him,” she said. “It was a bit scary before then; I think that’s why he stopped, because he realised what a vulnerable position I was in.”

Karen added that the driver, Stevo Monaghan, had trouble getting the spare off the lorry, so she will now make sure she gives it a spray of WD40 every now and then to prevent any such issues in future.

“I just couldn’t thank him enough,” she said. “He jumped in his truck and went, then I came home and thought I had to ring the company and thank him. I didn’t even get a chance to ask him his name but he was my knight in shining armour. They found out who he was, and apparently he got good remarks, but it was really nice.

“He held himself up, he didn’t have to do that, but he obviously knew how vulnerable I was, and it’s nice there are still nice people like that around.”

A spokesperson for LMP Commercials, Stevo’s employers, said they are proud to have him as part of the team.

“We are incredibly proud of Stevo and the calm, selfless way he responded in what was clearly a dangerous situation,” she told H&H. “His actions reflect exactly the kind of person he is – someone who looks out for others without hesitation – and the values we stand for as a business.

“Stevo was brought up on farms and around livestock from a young age, so he understands the potential dangers these situations can present and the importance of acting quickly but calmly to keep people and animals safe. His experience and level-headed approach undoubtedly helped prevent the situation from becoming even more serious.

Owner speaks up after horse trapped in overturned lorry for hours on motorway

The owner of a horse who was stuck in an overturned horsebox for hours after an accident has spoken up to help prevent others going through a similar ordeal.

Sue Garrard and her mare River Rise Onassis escaped serious injury on the M6 on 14 September, but Ms Garrard told H&H the situation could have been far worse. She was travelling “Sassy” back from the LeMieux National Dressage Championships, where she had come third in the six-year-old final with Sadie Smith, when her 4.5t box was hit from behind.

“It was horrendous,” she said. “We’re both pretty battered and bruised, and she’s got one quite deep wound that we have to be very careful about. But I thought she was dead.”

Ms Garrard said conditions were bad – driving rain, squally gusts and standing water. She was driving carefully, leaving a good braking distance in front.

“I saw some brake lights ahead and started to brake very gradually,” she said. “Then I felt a violent hit from behind and the horsebox started to fishtail. It veered from side to side a few times, while I attempted to straighten and also braking, but I felt it topple over.

“We skidded along on the driver’s side and came to a halt across all three lanes.”

Ms Garrard realised she was not badly hurt and climbed out of the passenger window.

“The horse was panicking and struggling violently, and I feared the worst,” she said. “I had to find some way of getting to the horse urgently without endangering my own life.”

Members of the public offered help, including another rider who called 999 and was trying to find an emergency vet.

“The horse was terrified and at first, some cars were sneaking past on the hard shoulder; each triggered a fresh panic from her,” Ms Garrard said. “It’s hard to put into words the level of distress I was feeling about my horse’s situation, but I knew staying calm for her was essential. Someone put their vehicle across the hard shoulder so no car could pass, and I dangled into the horse area, to try to hold her and soothe her.

“The fire brigade came and I asked if a vet had been called, since the horse urgently needed sedation to avoid catastrophic injury. She was standing on all four limbs and there was no extreme bleeding, but she was surrounded by sharp metal, glass and broken fibreglass and occasionally would panic and try to get out.”

Although she was told repeatedly that a vet was five to 10 minutes away, Ms Garrard spent three hours dangling, supported by a firefighter, until the vet arrived and Sassy was sedated, cut free and taken to hospital.”

“Key points that would be really valuable for the horse world are: who’s supposed to have an up-to-date list of equine vets?” Ms Garrard said. “Waiting three hours was unbearable and nobody seemed to know whose responsibility it was. And the vet was sent to the wrong place, or went to the wrong place, twice. It’s basic protocols that say, if this happens, the people who need to be prepared are prepared.”

Ms Garrard said all horse owners and emergency services should be able to find out where the nearest vets are and which are attached to a hospital, so the right person can be called immediately. She would like to see more consistent use of the what3words app, which pinpoints exact locations so it would allow vets to get there more quickly. She is also urging others to check breakdown cover.

Checking cover

“I was told, when I called my broker the next morning, my breakdown policy didn’t cover this because it was an accident, not a breakdown,” she said. “I’m challenging this, and it appears the small print says an accident is part of the cover. I had hotel and travel expenses, and the horse ambulance, which cost £3,360. Many people would struggle to cover these costs out of the blue. Being certain your cover will pick up these costs really matters.”

Another key point is safety of horseboxes. H&H has reported before on the fact that there are no minimum standards to which they must be built by law and although Ms Garrard’s Foxy was structurally only superficially damaged, not all lorries are so well made.

“I’ve never asked about safety of design and construction and I’ve bought four horseboxes,” Ms Garrard said. “I hear some have a great reputation for robust construction while others don’t. I have so many questions. What are the key questions to ask when we buy a lorry?”

Prospective buyers are urged to have horseboxes independently inspected before the sale for safety, as there are no legal standards.

Foxy Horseboxes’ Hannah Gould told H&H she is relieved that “after such a traumatic event for everyone, this young horse with such an exciting future will be able to continue her journey with Sadie and Sue”.

Mrs Gould, whose husband Andrew travels horses from youngstock to grand prix dressage horses in Foxy lorries, added that the company is continually updating and developing with safety and practicality in mind. And he urged owners to ensure all lorries are continually maintained, and buyers of second-hand horseboxes to have them inspected beforehand with safety in mind.

Vet directory

British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) CEO David Mountford told H&H that BEVA’s Safer Horse Rescues scheme supports emergency services by ensuring they can access the appropriate veterinary assistance for rescues involving horses.

“The initiative was set up more than 20 years ago by BEVA with help from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service and the British Horse Society,” he said. “BEVA’s Safer Horse Rescues practice directory is a list of equine practices by county, which have volunteered to be available for call-outs from emergency services. The directory is available online and in emergency services call centres. BEVA also manages a small emergency rescue fund to help practices with costs associated with a rescue where the owner of the horse cannot be traced.”

5 things that may ring a bell for owners of older horseboxes

Ah, the trusty old horsebox, truck or wagon, depending on what you like to call it. Older than your car (and possibly yourself, or even your parents), you can’t afford to replace it, so you look after it carefully in hopes it may last – and you wouldnÆt get much for it if you sold it. It still does you proud, though there are a few things that may be familiar…

“There’s a knack to it”

If one of the uninitiated, or the unwary, is borrowing your older wagon, this always comes with a list of things you have to do to persuade it to run as intended. “Put the key in the ignition, wait 10 seconds, turn it once, wait for that light to go out – no that one – then you can start it.” Plus, of course, when you do try to start it, you have to have one foot on the accelerator/on the clutch/out of the passenger window. Then it starts every time. Simples.

There’s also a knack involved in many other things, whether it’s opening (or closing) the groom’s door – “No, really slam it!” – or the windows in the horse area (who thought those designs were a good idea? Anyone ever managed it without breaking a nail/your fingers?) or the driver’s door (“You have to sort of lift it, then you can pull the handle”) or the bit where the isolator is hidden. Yes, it’s got an anti-theft device. No, it probably doesn’t need one.

MOT time

No owner of any horsebox ever sees the approach of plating time with joy, but when your horsebox is older than most of the people testing it, it’s more problematic (“Is that really a J-reg, or is it on a private plate?”) It’s been reported that first-time passes are possible, but this has to be taken with a pinch of salt; anyone who achieves either this, or that prized certificate without spending north of a grand (both is in the realms of fantasy) will be seen shimmying out of the test centre to buy a lottery ticket – and they’ll need a winning one, to pay for next year’s test.

Parts

It only needs a bulb/handbrake cable/fuel pump; how hard can it be? Oh, my dear, sweet summer child. No stockist is going to remember when he last saw one of those for this model, let alone be able to produce one off the shelf, and it gets tedious having to repeat “Yes, it’s a pre-2001 build” (pre-1991, to be honest). Ebay is your friend here (other online marketplaces are available).

Speed

Oh, how you laugh when other people mutter about their lorries’ being limited to 56mph, yours doesn’t have any technical limit to how fast it can fly. That may be because such technology wasn’t invented in the 1980s, and to be honest, 56mph is a dream rather than a limit, unless you’re going downhill with a following wind, but still. There are some benefits.

Built to last

And of course, there are other benefits. Those of us still proudly trucking in our veteran vehicles will expound on the joys of something that’s been built to last, even if that is through a combination of mounting credit card bills, grey (or pulled-out) hair and possibly black magic. They don’t make ‘em like they used to. Jury’s still out on whether that’s a good thing or not…

Equestrians warned sensors in Britain’s roads can flag overweight horseboxes

The holidays are in full swing and equestrians are urged to ensure they are not overloading their horsebox as they head out and about this summer.

The National Association of Racing Staff (NARS) recently shared a warning to members who drive small (3.5 tonne) boxes.

It said it is “aware of three different boxes that have been stopped recently”.

“Please ensure compliance before embarking on any journey, take necessary precautions to avoid fines and disruptions to your journey,” added the spokesperson.

NARS also referred to technology used to identify overweight vehicles on British roads; weigh-in-motion (WIM) sensors, linked to automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras.

A spokesperson for the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) told H&H it started using WIMs in June 2004, in conjunction with the Highways Agency (now National Highways).

The spokesperson added that it developed and introduced WIM sensors linked to ANPR cameras in 2007 and that there are 14 sites using this linked technology across Britain.

“The DVSA’s priority is to protect everyone from unsafe drivers and vehicles,” the spokesperson told H&H.

“Horses are precious cargo, so it’s hugely important that horsebox owners know the weights and limits of their vehicle and trailer combinations, as well as the load, to ensure that they are not exceeded.

“The vehicle or trailer needs to be properly maintained all year, not just for its annual MOT.”

Penalties for a person driving an overloaded vehicle include fines, points and prohibition notices, which means the vehicle may not be driven any further until the problem (in this case, weight) is fixed.

A vehicle’s registered weight, for example, 3.5 tonne, is the maximum it is allowed to weigh – including load – on the road. Just because a vehicle is stalled for a certain number of horses does not mean it can legally carry that many. Drivers need to know the unladen weight of the vehicle and of everything in it to ensure they are not breaking the law.

Chris Facer of Equine Rescue Services told H&H vehicle inspectors are clamping down on overloaded vehicles.

“This is a busy time, with school holidays, camps and events,” he said. “Overloading vehicles can lead to premature wear and tear of components, and worst-case scenario, can actually compromise the structure of a vehicle.”

He added that overloading can damage a vehicle’s suspension and puts greater pressure on tyres, which can overheat and blow out, and brakes.

“You’re overworking the engine by carrying so much weight and you’re also going to use more fuel,” he said. “If you’re really heavy on the back end, that can sometimes cause the steering to feel very light and that leads to instability.

“So it is important you keep the vehicle within its weight limit, not just for you, your passengers and your horses, but for other road users as well.”

Mr Facer also encouraged equestrians to make sure their vehicles are generally ready for a busy summer.

“Tyre-related problems account for around 15–20% of breakdowns we encounter,” he said. “That’s not necessarily because they’ve been unfortunate enough to have a puncture, but because the tyres have been left and started to crack, and tyres get old.

“It’s worth getting the vehicle checked over properly. It can save you a lot of stress and inconvenience. Do everything you possibly can to reduce the chance of breaking down.”

Travelling horses in the heat – and what to do if you get stuck on the motorway

Getting stuck in traffic on the motorway is a pain at the best of times, but when you’re travelling horses, it can quickly turn into every owner’s worst nightmare — especially if you add high temperatures into the mix.

Preparation is key

Before travelling anywhere, make sure you have enough supplies on board (here’s a travel kit checklist) to keep your horses safe if you end up waiting in traffic. During spells of hot weather, take more water than you need — you may need it to help cool your horses down, as well as giving them something to drink.

The British Grooms Association gives the following recommendations: “Pre-travelling, it is wise to check traffic and take plenty of water and hay. It’s best to travel during the coolest hours of early morning and when the sun has gone down, and ensure that your equine breakdown recovery is up to date.”

Do your research before leaving, and check for any diversions or pre-planned road closures on your route. Likewise, keep an eye on when you’re travelling. If you clash with notable dates like schools breaking up for holidays and sports or music events, you may end up sitting in congestion that isn’t normally there.

It’s possible to install fans in lorries and trailers too, so if you plan to do lots of travelling over the summer months, consider looking into the best set-up for your vehicle.

Worst case scenarios

If you get caught up in traffic on the motorway and you’re worried about the welfare of your horse, your first port of call is to ring 101. Get your concerns logged as soon as you can, so you have plenty of time to create a plan.

“If it’s over 25°C, and you have horses on board, you need to call 101 to alert them prior making any decisions,” says the British Grooms Association. “It is not OK to use the hard shoulder, and the police would be required to be alerted if you were in a situation where the horses were distressed.”

While it’s tempting to drive straight on to the hard shoulder and leave at the next exit, you’d be opening yourself up to prosecution and getting a fine and points. As the British Grooms Association states, “the hard shoulder is there for use in emergencies only.”

Using the hard shoulder without informing the police could also result in compromising an investigation. If you don’t know where or what the police are dealing with, you could end up driving straight into the scene. When you call 101, you can find out whether the nearest exit is clear.

If your horse is getting distressed, it becomes a personal decision as to whether you risk using the hard shoulder. No one is permitted to drive on it, so you may still leave yourself open to prosecution, even if 101 is aware of your situation and the exit is clear. So, if you do decide to take the risk, ensure you have evidence to prove the mitigating circumstances, such as a video of your distressed horse and a record of the temperature.

According to the RAC, motorists who drive on the hard shoulder could receive a £100 fine and three penalty points on their licence.

The force’s decision

Each police force will have its own protocol when it comes to assisting and helping vehicles travelling horses. Every situation is looked at on a case-by-case basis, and varying factors will influence the action taken. These may include the temperature, the length of time waiting, the state of the horses, the reason for traffic, and the incident that the police are dealing with.

Clare Blatchley was travelling her horses when she ended up waiting in traffic for over 40 minutes, on a hot day.

“We were in a jam and a police car approached us and asked if the horses were restless due to the heat and the length of time we had already been waiting. We said we were getting worried about them overheating and we didn’t have much water left on board, so they escorted us off the motorway on the hard shoulder. They were amazing!”

‘The best day ever’: bridal party arrives in horsebox for the perfect Brightling wedding

What do you do when you’ve got a bride and six bridesmaids to get to the wedding venue together? You use the horsebox, of course!

Four-star event rider Alycia Port came up with the idea, for her wedding to Hugh Brown at former international venue Brightling Park on 24 May.

“I just thought it was a good idea as it was really hard to get everyone there,” Alycia told H&H. “We had sofas and everything in there too, and the photographer came with us. And luckily one of my bridesmaids’ partners has a valeting business so it went there first. It was a bit of a shame to put a horse back in it afterward as it was so beautifully clean!”

Alycia said Hugo is completely non-horsey but easily persuaded to marry at the stunning East Sussex venue, the scene of Alycia’s best international result, fourth with Klotilde in the three-star just before Covid.

And although the weather was blustery, the rain held off all day, for the happy couple and guests including a host of other event riders – and Heidi the Browns’ dachshund.

“She came down the aisle with a bridesmaid, and sat on a throne behind us while we ate lunch, Alycia said. “And she definitely got a few mentions in the speeches! It was perfect. The best day ever.”

The Browns enjoyed a three-night honeymoon in the Cotswolds, after which Alycia got back in time to to compete at Little Downham on 31 May, where she and Eaudevi finished on their dressage score.

The ultimate guide to horsebox insurance

Deciding what horsebox insurance you need might fill you with dread, but here's everything you need to know to get you up to speed before you sign on the dotted line

Insurance for a horsebox is a legal requirement and there are a number of policy options depending on the type of vehicle you have and how you intend to use it. It’s important to pick the right policy, as if invalid, any claim will not be honoured. So the first rule is check your policy documents to make sure you have bought the policy that contains all the aspects of cover you need.

The good news is that there is plenty of information available to guide you and equestrian insurance specialists like SEIB, KBIS, Shearwater and The Insurance Emporium have dedicated experts and a range of policies. There are also comparison websites but you need to make sure that you are comparing like with like and that each quotation has the cover you need. The cheapest is not always the best value.

When you look for insurance, make sure you are clear on what category of driver will be operating the horsebox and exactly what you are using the horsebox for. Any breach of the regulations will invalidate your insurance.

DVSA (Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency) has a useful online guide that clarifies the various categories of operators’ licence. This is particularly important if you intend to use the horsebox as part of your business or for reward. This will affect the type of insurance policy you will need to buy.

Breakdown cover is an important consideration if you don’t have good back-up and someone who can come out and rescue you when you have the horse on board. If you have to pay for recovery, this can be very expensive.

What type of horsebox insurance cover?

Fully comprehensive will cover you if you have an accident and pay for your repair bills if it’s a valid claim. It is usually the most expensive but gives you the greatest cover and is the most popular. While policies vary, it will usually cover damage caused to the vehicle by the horse, vandalism and windscreen damage.

Third party fire and theft policies can be cheaper but will usually only cover the costs of the other party if you have an accident which is your fault and loss through fire or theft. You will have to pay for repairing your own vehicle.

Neither kind of policy will cover injury to the horse during transit. You will need additional horse insurance for that.

If you use your horsebox as part of your business you must declare this to your insurance company and purchase the appropriate business policy. For example, if you are a breeder showing your horse with a view to increasing its value, this may class as business use. Or if you are a professional rider transporting to shows and any winnings are part of the business, then you will need a business policy.

If you intend to transport horses for a fee or hire out the lorry, you will need a hire and reward policy.

What about horse trailer insurance?

If you have a trailer rather than a horsebox, then you will legally need to have insurance on your towing vehicle, but check the small print to see what your car policy covers in terms of towing. While it may give you some cover while the trailer is being towed, it is unlikely to cover theft of the trailer, nor cover to get your horse safely home if your towing vehicle or trailer suffers damage or a breakdown.

“As with many aspects that come with owning a horse, buying a trailer is likely to be another big investment in what already has become an expensive hobby,” says Francis Martin, CEO of The Insurance Emporium. “Nonetheless, while your vehicle insurance may cover your horse trailer for third-party liability, it’s wise to consider getting proper horse trailer insurance cover to safeguard it should something unfortunate happen to it.

“By getting specialist insurance, which is tailored to your needs, you could get cover against fire and theft, public liability, recovery, and even replacement hire – meaning if something untoward does happen you’ve got the cover to get you and your horse back on the open road before you know it.”

What are the age restrictions for cover?

Many insurance policies will have age restrictions for the driver. Most will allow drivers from 21 years upwards but it is important to check this. There are insurance companies who will cover drivers under 21, but you can expect to pay a higher premium.

Who can drive my horsebox?

“Most policies will allow you to insure more than one driver for your horsebox and have the option of adding others on for a fee. If you lend your horsebox to a friend, they would only be covered to drive the horsebox should they be named on your policy or you have an ‘any driver policy’. This can have restrictions so check your policy wording,” says a spokesperson at Shearwater Insurance.

It’s useful to have other drivers named on your policy so in the event of an injury to you, they can take your horse home. It is your responsibility to check that anybody driving the vehicle does not have any adverse driving history such as accidents, claims, losses or conviction points.

What does the excess mean?

This is the amount that you will be liable to pay if you have to make a claim. For example, if you have an excess of £150 and are making a claim for £750 to cover the cost of repairs, you will only receive £600 from your insurer as settlement.

How can I keep the costs down?

The cost of insurance is affected by the value and size of the vehicle, its age and mileage and the level of cover required. Vehicles of over 7.5 tonnes will cost significantly more. A newer vehicle will attract lower premiums because the chance of breakdown is lower.

Brokers review their products regularly and if you have a high value horsebox it may be advisable to speak to them directly to get a bespoke quote.

It will be cheaper if you are the only person allowed to drive, but this is not always practical. Make sure you do not over-estimate of the number of miles you will do each year as this can affect the cost.

Can I travel horses I don’t own in my horsebox?

If you transport other people’s horses, providing you are not making a profit, this will still be classed as social, domestic and pleasure use so you will be protected. If you wish to charge more than basic fuel or running costs, you will need to contact DVSA to see if you need a transporting licence and then review your policy with your insurers to ensure you have the correct cover. You may need a hire and reward policy.

What if the horse damages my horsebox?

Most comprehensive insurance policies will cover this, but you will need to check the policy wording.

Are the vehicle contents covered?

Not usually. If you require this, talk to your insurer about extending your cover.

Do I need breakdown/roadside assistance cover?

This is very much an individual choice and depends on how long the journeys are you make and whether you have good back up with additional transport available.

Horseboxes tend to break down more frequently than other commercial vehicles because they are not used so often and tend to be built on an older chassis. Breakdown cover, which starts at around £135, should be with a specialist equine company who can not only repair your vehicle but also recover the horse and take it home if necessary.

Note that most breakdown policies exclude cover for punctures and blowouts if the vehicle does not have a functioning spare wheel on board.

Not all breakdown policies include home start as standard. Without home start you will not be covered for breakdowns within a certain vicinity of your address.

Some insurance companies, including SEIB and KBIS, have breakdown policies which have added extras such as key cover (if lost or stolen), a replacement driver (if the driver has been signed off as medically unfit to drive ie. after a riding accident) or insurance for a replacement driver if they have the appropriate licence, and misfuelling. Standard benefits to check for are home start, roadside assistance and recovery of horse, vehicle and passengers. SEIB also includes help if the vehicle gets stuck in sand or snow, flood or mud, plus recovery.

It is crucial to maintain your horsebox (even in the off season) as failure to do so increases the likelihood of a breakdown and could therefore increase your premium.

‘All hell broke loose’: safety warning after pony’s leg goes through lorry floor

The owner of a pony who was lucky to survive after his hoof went through the lorry floor has highlighted the very real need for meticulous checking of vehicles.

Vets believe Abi and Emma Hardern’s two-year-old Buttons will make a full recovery from the incident on 5 September, when Abi was transporting him and another youngster on the Huntingdon Bypass in their 7.5t lorry. Emma hopes sharing his story will help prevent another such incident.

“The fire brigade chief told Abi they see this across the country and most of the time, the horse breaks its leg on impact and has to be put down,” Emma said.

“Our saving grace was that he’s a small pony and our lorry is high off the ground. If it had been inches lower, his foot would just have been a stump.”

Emma said she and Abi had sold Buttons and the other young horse to some friends, and they were en route to their new home when a lorry driver behind started flashing his lights and hooting, so Abi pulled over.

“The lorry driver came running up, saying ‘Your horse has gone through the bottom of the lorry’,” Emma said. “Then all hell broke loose.”

Vets, police and firefighters arrived and Buttons was taken to hospital. He had worn away half the outside of his hoof, and his sole down to the laminae, Emma said, but is home and comfortable, with a positive prognosis.

She added that the day after the accident, her horsebox was dismantled; it had had a full check when it had its MoT in July but that the rubber mats were sealed to the floor, so it could only be checked from underneath.

“We found there had been a leak at the window so water had run down and rotted the wall, and the floor, right at the edge,” she said. “An inch either side, it was completely solid. It was invisible, until the worst happened.”

Emma advised all other owners to “check, check and check again”, lifting mats frequently, and inspecting floors and ramps. She also pointed out that if people are looking for transport quotes, professionals’ boxes must be consistently checked, so legitimate operators will charge more.

“Remember, you’re paying for safety,” she said. “Don’t second-guess it because it can happen.”

Emma added that having aluminium floors is not a guarantee of safety, with which Byron John of Safety Check Horseboxes agrees.

“Often, I’ll be inspecting a box and someone says ‘It’s ok, it’s got an aluminium floor’, but it’s not,” he said. “Aluminium floors, and the framework they’re on, can corrode as quickly as wood rots.”

Mr John added, as Emma also pointed out, that MoTs do not look at floor or ramp safety.

“An MoT isn’t a service, and other than something that’s an imminent danger; sharp or falling off, this sort of thing isn’t part of it,” he said. “That’s a major misconception, I can’t emphasise it enough.

“It’s very important to address leaks as they occur, close the windows when you’re not using the vehicle, and really check the floor, even if you pay a professional to do it.”

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service, which came to Buttons’ aid, told H&H: “Make sure you carry out a thorough check of any vehicle used to transport animals and download the app what3words so that you are able to provide us with an accurate location in an emergency.”

5 reasons a horsebox is better than a car

There are times that, much as we love our trusty wagons, they can be frustrating. And it’s fair to say no rider has ever uttered the words “My lorry’s going in for its MOT” without that thousand-pound-bill shiver up the spine, and that’s if you’re lucky.

So to celebrate the humble horsebox, here are five reasons why we think a lorry is so much better than a car.

1. You can’t put a horse in your car

Dur.

2. Presence

The sight of your much-loved DAF (other lorry makes are available) hoving into view on a narrow country lane might make your average BMW driver (other inconsiderate drivers are available) think harder about barging through on your right of way than if you were in your Ford Fiesta (other car makes, etc) would. Because you’re not going to come off worse here.

3. Nosiness

Not only is there a safety plus in sitting in state high above the road, being able to see over hedges does not just allow you to spot oncoming traffic, it also gives the nosey parker passengers among us all sorts of extra things to see. Just what have they been up to at number 34?!

4. Speed

Limiters may be irritating, or at least to those of us without the more elderly wagons for whom 56mph is an aspiration rather than a ceiling. But at least you won’t get caught by 70mph speed cameras on the motorway, and you can snigger at anyone else who does.

5. Time

Your car may be ready to go as soon as you turn the engine on, without all that tedious hanging around for the whining noise to stop, meaning you can actually get your lorry moving. But then that removes the window for remembering you’ve forgotten to pack your saddle/boots/gin/horse… we know you’ve been there.

‘We’ve been very lucky’: owner’s safety warning after horsebox catches fire on A1

The owner of a lorry that caught fire on the A1 is appealing to others to take precautions, as she acknowledges how lucky she, her daughter and her ponies were.

Nikki Green has shared the things that helped in her situation, on 13 July, to raise awareness of the importance of the right safety measures.

Nikki told H&H she was travelling her ponies Val and Stu, with her nine-year-old daughter Lucy, for someone to ride Stu in practice for a competition.

“We were just north of junction 50 when someone pulled alongside us and was pointing at the wagon,” she said. “I couldn’t see anything, the dashboard looked fine and it felt ok – then I smelt burning rubber.

“I pulled over and checked the tyres, which were fine, then heard this funny noise. I thought the radiator had gone, looked underneath and saw sparks and flames.”

Nikki told her daughter to get out while she took the keys out and grabbed the ponies’ bridles.

“I thought ‘how am I going to hold two ponies on the side of the A1? We’ll have to flag someone down’,” she said. “This man stopped; he was driving a trailer with two in and he saw the little ‘un waving her arms, stopped and came over.

“I said ‘we’re on fire’, and he just grabbed the first pony and I put the bridle on the other one.”

Nikki praised the “amazing” man who came to her rescue; he not only helped get the ponies off, he put the fire out, using an extinguisher Nikki had in the lorry.

“He not only saved us, he saved the wagon,” Nikki said, explaining that the fire originated in the central bearing, and the damage was relatively minor.

“I don’t know if it would have burned itself out but it was getting close to the gas bottles,” she said.

Nikki said she has replayed the incident in her mind, asking whether or not she could have done anything differently. But her lorry was well maintained, and had passed its MoT a week before, and she had fire extinguishers on board.

What she will change is their positioning; one was on a bracket from which she could not free it and the smaller one, which did put the fire out, was in the living near the cooker.

“Have an extinguisher in the cab so you can grab it straight away,” she said. “I don’t think you can have too many.”

As well as having the extinguishers, Nikki pointed out, they need to be checked and serviced, and she is looking into fire safety sticks, which do not have to be held by a fire to extinguish it.

She also urges others to check their dashboards constantly; she always does so for warning lights and engine temperature, as overheating is a major cause of fires, and to have bridles or similar on board.

“Have bridles for every horse you’re travelling as you never know when you might have to get them out into traffic,” she said. “We’d been testing different bits for Stu so had a few on board, all with bridles, but I wouldn’t have thought of taking one for Val as he wasn’t doing anything. I thought afterwards, maybe I’ll have headpieces with bits, or a Chifney; they’re extreme but you want something to put over their head and take them straight off, and if they get a fright coming off the ramp with an artic coming towards you, you need to have hold of them.”

Nikki also recommends having high-vis on board for humans. in case of accidents.

“A lorry manufacturer said he’d put an extinguisher in the cab of every wagon he sells now, which is really good, and friends have messaged saying they’ve bought them; the message seems to be that people hadn’t thought about it before but they will now.

“We were so lucky in so many ways; the ponies behaved impeccably and they and my daughter are fine and there’s not much damage. We’ve been incredibly lucky.”

Horsebox versus horse trailer – which would suit you best?

Most horse owners at some stage will consider whether they want to invest in a horsebox or trailer. You can get by without your own transport, but whether it’s competing, hunting, fun rides or even taking the horse to the vet, at some stage it feels more practical to have your own set of wheels rather than begging lifts or hiring transport on demand.

A trailer is towed behind your car. As such, you need to have a sufficiently powerful and heavy car to match up to the trailer’s weight with a horse. Horses typically travel facing forwards in trailers, but some of the larger models now offer herringbone or rear-facing stalls, giving more options to keep horses comfortable while on the road.

The best trailers tend to be more popular with those who compete less often and therefore don’t want a horsebox taking up half the drive when it’s not in use so frequently. And if you’ve only one horse to transport, you may not need require as much space as lorry offers.

A horsebox is a lorry designed – or converted – specifically to travel horses. There are rear-facing, forward-facing and herringbone options. Like trailers, there is a big range in size from two-horse 3.5t horseboxes with minimal living area, to vast 10-horse trucks with room for a small family to camp in style. Horseboxes – also known as lorries — tend to be the preferred option for professional riders. They typically look smarter, take a string of horses, and have space to entertain owners in the living area.

Trailers: the pros

Trailers are cheaper than lorries on several levels. Their price-tag is lower as an initial investment, and their running costs are lower, because there is less to maintain, ie no engine, no MOT/plating, nor road tax
Fuel: even a diesel 4×4 car towing a load is cheaper to refuel than a horsebox
Since December 2021, the rule has been scrapped that prohibited drivers who passed their test after 1 January 1997 from driving a trailer without an additional trailer test. This cuts out the need for additional fees and time-consuming qualifications. However, driving a trailer isn’t completely straightforward so it’s advisable to undergo training before transporting horses
You can park, unhitch and drive away unencumbered when you don’t need the trailer, for instance when you are stabling your horse at a show and want to nip out to buy food
Your trailer will usually have basic cover as part of your car insurance policy. However, it is advisable to have dedicated horse trailer insurance, as well as specialist breakdown to cover recovery of your horses

Cons

You need an appropriate car for towing. This is only really a con if you have to upgrade your current vehicle. However, just because a car has a towbar does not mean it’s fit, or legal, to pull a trailer. Be aware, too, that straining the car will reduce its working life. The total weight of what you are towing (the trailer, plus the weight of everything on board) must not weigh more than the car’s maximum towing capacity (MTC), which can be found in your car’s handbook
Most trailers have stalls for only two horses, and the larger ones that have three or even four berths need a very powerful car to tow them safely
Most trailers are not designed for overnight stays, although some people are prepared to camp in the horse area if the need arises. The few that do have separate living or tack areas, tend to need a larger towing vehicle
Many drivers find them harder to drive and manoeuvre, especially reversing down a narrow country lane, but it is vital that you are confident and skilled at driving with a trailer before putting horses on board

Horsebox or trailer: ‘Running costs are next to nothing’

Kirsty Morton switched from a 7.5t lorry to a 3.9t in 2020, but when her new horse didn’t travel in the smaller (rear-facing) lorry, she switched to a trailer and Jeep, in which he travels “perfectly”.

“At first I hated the trailer; I felt like I had dropped down in the world as I absolutely loved the lorry,” says Kirsty, who competes in British Showjumping. “But a good six months in, I wouldn’t change it – there are so many pros.”

Kirsty lists running costs and cheaper fuel as key advantages: “The days of £1,000-plus per year running costs are gone. And I now have a nice Jeep for running about in, and the flexibility at a stay-away show to nip out for food.”

On the downside, she misses the space, both the living area and room to tack up.

“But with the rising costs of everything, I won’t be staying away as much, and if I were to stay away, I could get a nice B&B or Travelodge.”

Horseboxes: the pros

Most people believe horses travel better in lorries. There tends to be more space and the suspension can be better in a lorry, affording a smoother ride and minimising the effects of bumpy roads
You can drive a 3.5t horsebox on your car licence (B category) without additional qualifications
The larger the horsebox, the more horses you can transport, though this is subject to the payload, so don’t assume just because you a two-berth lorry, you can legally take two large horses. But overall, you simply have more space, for the horses, kit and people
Most lorries do have some living area, which gives the option of at least being able to shelter from the wind and rain and enjoy a cup of hot tea – or more formal hosting for riders with clients. The larger lorries have a sizeable, well-fitted room with plenty of space for a small family to camp during shows
The majority of larger lorries have access directly through from the living area to the stalls. This means that you may not need to get out of the truck if you need to check on the horses during the journey or in an emergency
Horseboxes are steadier in high winds
They look smarter, and therefore besides having the space to carry a string, are the preferred choice for the professional rider

Cons

Initial expense: horseboxes are typically much more expensive to purchase than trailers, as they are larger, with more facilities, have their own engine and are a vehicle in their own right
Ongoing expense: the running costs of a horsebox are higher than a trailer, because it is effectively like having another vehicle on the road (and you’ll also need a car for everyday use). This means it needs an MOT/plating, insurance, servicing and general maintenance/repairs
Unless you passed your regular driving test before January 1997, for a horsebox between 3.5t and 7.5t you need a C1 licence and to take a DVSA test. Above 7.5t, all drivers need the category C lorry licence for up to 32t. This takes time: you need a medical from the doctor, a two-part theory test and then HGV training, which can cost up to £3,000
You need to be really careful not to go overweight in a horsebox – especially if you are transporting more than one horse/pony in a 3.5T, but also many 7.5T lorries partitioned for three horses do not have sufficient payload to carry three along with all their associated kit. Take the lorry to the weighbridge to check you are within the limits
If you’re at a show and want to nip out to shops, your only vehicle is a horsebox, which is both unwieldy on country lanes and in car parks, as well as expensive on fuel
A trailer pulled by a strong 4×4 is easier to extract from a muddy field than a horsebox which has to wait its turn for the tractor tow

Horsebox or trailer: ‘far less stressful in the lorry’

Liz Roberts switched from a trailer to a 7.5t lorry. She has a 17hh Irish Sport Horse competing at medium and a semi-retired advanced medium 16.3hh gelding who works as a voluntary police horse, plus a rescue pony who acts as a travelling companion.

“Having two big horses we’ve found it is far less stressful in the lorry than when we towed,” Liz says. “We love the fact that when we arrive at a show or home, with a trailer you tend to explode out of it, with stuff rammed in all over the place, the car smells of sweaty saddle cloths – with a lorry, it stays in the lorry.

“We can bring a few spares, the day living is super for a quick cuppa and somewhere dry to sit.”

However, Liz does acknowledge the higher costs.

“It is more expensive – at least £1,000 to £2,000 per year to get through the annual test. The current cost of fuel is making us think twice, but to have a vehicle big enough to tow two 16.3hh horses safely would mean for everyday driving the fuel consumption would be higher. Instead, we have an economical car for everyday use. Insurance is relatively cheap for our 22-year-old lorry.”

Horsebox and trailer

Like so many things, it’s horses for courses. Some people flipflop between the two modes of transport throughout their horse-owning life depending on their needs at the time, financial situation and horsepower – others keep both, using whichever suits the day’s predicament.

Kellie Fisher has owned a 7.5t, two 3.5ts and two trailers during her eventing career, changing modes according to “cost, environmental and personal reasons”.

Her next 3.5t had living but only had the payload for one horse, which eventually proved limiting, and so she switched to an IW Eventa trailer, which includes herringbone stalls and living accommodation.

“It was amazing for eventing with lots of storage, overnight and day living, plus so economical compared to a lorry,” she says. “We had hoped to change our car for something more environmentally minded, but nothing electric in our price range could tow the Eventa, so I bit the bullet and had a 7.5t lorry built to specification.”

Now with a giant breed dog and a toddler, and plenty of experience on exactly what she wants from her horse transport, Kellie is thrilled with her Tristar non-coachbuilt (a cheaper option) lorry.

“I would prefer greater economy and less environmental impact in terms of diesel, but we have chosen to have an electric car instead. I’m hoping electric/biofuel lorries become mainstream soon!”

‘Horses are precious cargo’: owners reminded of the risks of overloading horseboxes

Owners have been warned not to risk human and equine safety, or a criminal conviction, by overloading horseboxes – as many are not aware of the importance of payload.

Kevin Parker, of Kevin Parker Horseboxes, has for years been trying to get the message out to horse owners, but he told H&H: “Most customers don’t know anything about it.”

Mr Parker said many horsebox owners will not have come across the issue of payload or vehicle weights before, but that this is one of the top factors in the search for a vehicle, and he “cannot emphasise enough how crucial this point is”.

If a horsebox is registered as a 3.5, or 7.5tonne, for example, and its total weight is over that when on the road, this is breaking the law. Vehicles that are carrying too much weight can be harder to steer and take longer to stop, as well as putting too much stress on tyres that could lead to overheating or blowouts.

Carrying excess weight can also mean up to a £300 fine, or a court summons for the worst offences, and it could mean the vehicle insurance will not cover repairs.

“Unlike buying a car, where weight is never mentioned, payload is an integral aspect of horsebox ownership,” Mr Parker said. “For many customers, staying safe and legal means learning a whole new subject.”

Mr Parker explained that the payload of a vehicle is the amount that can be added to its unladen weight without exceeding the maximum authorised mass. To calculate it, the vehicle should be taken to a weighbridge and weighed with all its integral parts but without horses, people, fuel, water or equipment, and this total subtracted from the weight at which it is registered.

“I’ve known of people who advertise boxes with a weight certificate, but they’ve had it weighed without the partitions or back doors, so it’s got a really good payload,” he said. “But then the customer drives away thinking they’re sorted, and that’s not the case.”

Mr Parker advised taking any potential purchase to a weighbridge to determine payload before buying, then loading it and weighing again, bearing in mind an average horse could weigh 600kg, a person possibly 80kg, and fuel and water 1kg per litre.

Another aspect to consider is loading. Each axle can carry a legal maximum weight, say 3.6 for the front and 5tonne for the rear. A fully loaded 7.5tonne could be legal, but removing one horse from the back could mean too much weight on the front axle.

“I have a very good friend who transports horses – her horsebox was weighed with three horses and was legal,” Mr Parker said. “It had a very large one loaded first, then two smaller ponies. After dropping off the two small ponies, the large horse was left in the front stall and when weighed, this time the front axle was overweight.

“She was lucky enough to get a warning and made to reload the large horse into a middle stall. I often use this as an explanation of horsebox payloads and positioning for customers, and it highlights perfectly how easy it is to fall foul of the law.”

Mark Pickup, CEO of Lion Equestrian Insurance, told H&H that if a lorry is overloaded and involved in an accident, it is likely the insurer will not cover the costs of repair to the vehicle.

“Because it’s breaking the law, and if the accident is caused by that, not only could you be prosecuted, your insurance will probably not cover the repairs,” he said. “It’s unlikely the insurer wouldn’t pay for third-party injury or damage, but they may take a civil prosecution against the policyholder to recover their costs.”

A DVSA spokesperson referred H&H to information on maximum weights and sanctions, adding: “The DVSA’s priority is to protect everyone from unsafe drivers and vehicles.

“Horses are precious cargo, so it’s hugely important that horsebox owners know the weights of their vehicle/trailer as well as the load, to ensure that they are not exceeded. The vehicle or trailer also needs to be properly maintained all year, not just for its annual MOT.”

Drivers must also have the correct licence and operator licence if required, and ensure vehicles are safe to be on the road, with walkaround checks before departure and maintenance.

‘So many professional riders are doing it wrong’: lorry driving rules to change again

Professional riders competing in Europe should be aware of new tachograph legislation coming into force, as calls are made for more education around “confusing” driver rules.

Under the EU “Mobility Package I” a number of changes were announced to tachograph regulation for vehicles undertaking international journeys, including horseboxes. These changes are being implemented in stages; from 21 August 2023 newly registered goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes must be fitted with a “smart tachograph 2”. From 31 December 2024 goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes that have analogue or digital tachographs must replace them with a smart tachograph 2 or transitional smart tachograph. Vehicles fitted with a “smart tachograph 1” have until 19 August 2025 to retrofit a smart tachograph 2.

A Department for Transport (DfT) spokesman told H&H the department has been “engaging closely with [the] industry to increase awareness about these new rules, phasing implementation to ensure they can bed in smoothly”.

But although the Mobility Package I was announced in 2020, gaining clarification on the rules has been difficult. The guidance on the UK Government website has still not been updated, and a spokesman for the DVLA told H&H the updates “should come soon”. A further legislation change will come into force in July 2026 whereby 2.5-3.5 tonne goods vehicles undertaking EU travel must have tachographs fitted, but confusion has arisen over whether this applies to newly registered vehicles or all vehicles, and the Department for Transport did not respond to H&H’s request for clarification on this.

Owen Evans of Essex Driver Training Ltd told H&H that the biggest concern is the retrofitting of tachographs on older vehicles from 2024 onwards, the onus of which will fall on horsebox owners who will need to be aware of the new requirement and make the change – in new vehicles the tachograph will come fitted by the manufacturer.

“It is confusing as there are so many different rules,” he said, adding that there needs to be more education among the equestrian community when it comes to driver rules.

“Even when you look something up online and think ‘That’s me’, it’s not always the case in the horse world because there are different circumstances that you can come under, for example whether you’re private or not – and that doesn’t happen with normal haulage. That’s why some people pick and choose what rules they want to abide by.”

As another example, Mr Evans cited operator licences, a topic that has come under much discussion in the horse world. H&H has reported on operator licences and the legal consequences of not complying (news, 3 September 2020), and last August the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) issued a reminder to horsebox drivers about who needs an operator licence.

This applies when a horsebox owner driver is paid money (directly or indirectly) to transport horses or uses the horsebox for a “professional activity”. Even if a horsebox is only used for commercial purposes for a short period such as one day, an operator licence is still required. A DVSA spokesman confirmed to H&H last year that even if somebody does not charge directly for transporting a horse, but instead charges them for livery or training and offers transport as part of the service, that is considered “commercial use” – and a hire and reward operator licence is is needed if the vehicle or vehicle and trailer combination is over 3.5 tonnes.

But despite continued coverage on the topic, Mr Evans said many professional riders continue to transport horses without an operator licence.

“You can get stopped when driving any time, and so many people are doing it wrong,” he said.

‘It’s damaging for business’: equestrian industry speaks out over low emission zone

Further concerns have been raised about the impact of the Government’s low-emission zones on the equestrian industry.

Expansion plans for London’s ultra low-emission zone (ULEZ) have been given the green light, so from 29 August the zone will expand across all London boroughs, with the aim to “help clear London’s air and improve health”.

Under the ULEZ scheme, some vehicles that do not meet the emission standards could face a daily charge of £12.50. Horseboxes over 3.5 tonnes do not need to pay this ULEZ charge, but do still need to pay the London-wide low-emission zone (LEZ) charge of up to £300 per day, based on vehicle size, if they do not meet the LEZ emissions standards. These LEZ charges and standards have not changed since H&H last reported on them (news, October 2020). Horseboxes up to and including 3.5 tonnes that do not meet the ULEZ standards, are subject to the daily charge.

Other cities with low-emission and clean-air zones include Bath, Bristol, Birmingham, Portsmouth, Sheffield, Edinburgh and Glasgow, and plans for Greater Manchester remain under review.

Although bigger horseboxes do not have to pay the London ULEZ charge, the expansion of the zone is still having an impact on the equestrian industry.

“While the ULEZ may not directly impact [all] motorised horseboxes, some equestrians will still have to travel in the LEZ, for competition, to reach off-road routes, or even if they need to travel with their horse to a vet,” a British Horse Society (BHS) spokesman told H&H, adding that those towing trailers could also feel the impact [if the towing vehicle is not LEZ or ULEZ compliant].

“This expansion has the potential to affect participation and equestrian businesses within the zone that are running events; not to mention how it could lead to a drop in clients for those offering livery in the area.”

The spokesman added that the society “recognises the great need” to improve air quality within Greater London, and “critically, to make sure more people can reap the benefits of being outdoors”.

“It is important to recognise that these plans could have a detrimental impact on equestrians and equine facilities. This is particularly worrying, with the BHS already reporting a loss of 250 riding schools since 2018,” he said.

“If this expansion plan is implemented, it is imperative that riding on the road is made safer for all equestrians and that more off-road access opportunities are provided within the area. Taking these steps will mean that at least some equestrians can access hacking, or riding centres and competitions under saddle, if not too far away.”

Charlie McMillan, owner of Frith Manor Equestrian Centre in north London, told H&H in 2020 that the LEZ had affected the yard and others in the area “enormously”, and that it was not just a problem for [all] horseboxes, but that deliveries were often delayed because companies would try to coordinate with their other deliveries to avoid heavy LEZ charges.

Frith Manor falls under the ULEZ expansion, and Ms McMillan told H&H the situation has continued to deteriorate, and although horseboxes are not affected by the ULEZ, many people still have cars that are not compliant.

“I’ve got client after client who can’t drive into this area [without paying the ULEZ charge],” she said. “It’s very damaging for the business, I’m losing liveries. If they can move their horses out on to the other side of the M25, it makes it a lot cheaper for them.

“It’s stopping new people bringing horses into the area as well, as they know that unless their car meets the emission standards, they can’t afford to be going out every day with a car that’s going to cost them £12.50 each visit. There are four yards in the area and before, we would all always have been pretty full, which is really not the case now.”

Rider Jaime Stubberfield, who keeps her horses in Enfield, north London, – which is in LEZ and the ULEZ expansion – told H&H she stopped competing owing to the cost with the zone charges.

“To buy a box that isn’t affected by the charges is going to cost me the best part of £20,000, and I don’t have that.”

In a statement, mayor of London Sadiq Khan said “expanding the ULEZ London-wide was a difficult decision”, but that he “remains committed to pushing ahead in order to save lives, protect children’s lungs and tackle the climate emergency”. From 21 August, the Government scrappage scheme has been increased and every London resident with a non-ULEZ-compliant car will be eligible for a £2,000 grant. Small businesses and sole traders are eligible for up to £21,000 in grants to scrap up to three vans, including horseboxes up to and including 3.5 tonnes.

“The expansion of the scrappage scheme means that the remaining minority of Londoners, who need to drive and don’t have a car that meets the standards, now have access to financial support to make the green transition,” said a Transport for London spokesman.

Family of baby blue tits stowed away in horsebox for three-hour trip

A family of baby blue tits were discovered living in the wing mirror of a horsebox – which had travelled for over three hours to an event.

Having arrived at the show in Somerset last Saturday (27 May), the drivers were alerted to their stowaways by a chorus of hungry cheeping.

“They worked out it was coming from the lorry wing mirror,” Pauline Kidner, founder of the Secret World Wildlife Rescue charity, told H&H.

“We sent out a response driver but when they got there, they said there was no way they could get in the mirror. So the lorry owners very kindly disconnected it, we promised we wouldn’t damage it, and we brought it back.”

At Secret World, wildlife carer Dan Bryant managed, very carefully, to extract the fledglings one at a time, until all eight were out and demanding food.

Ms Kidner explained that it was in the chicks’ best interest to be removed from the mirror.

“They were very young, about a week old, so they would have been being fed almost hourly,” she said. “We couldn’t have left them where they were.”

She added that in such situations, mother birds will try to look for their chicks for a certain amount of time but it would have been “very much in the lap of the gods” as to whether the adult blue tit would have returned to the nest.

All the fledglings are thriving, and Ms Kidner said the charity will follow its usual procedure with baby birds.

“Most garden birds are independent about three weeks after hatching,” she said. “Once they’re starting to feed themselves, they’ll go in an aviary to make sure they are self-feeding and doing ok, for at least two weeks. Then they’ll go to a release site, with another aviary where they can be monitored for a week while they get used to their surroundings. The aviary is open so they can fly out, but come back if they need to.

“We help more than 5,000 animals every year but it’s always been my feeling that if you’re going to put so much time and effort into orphans, sometimes feeding them every hour, day and night, you’ve got to give them the best possible start when you release them.”

Ms Kidner added that the wing mirror was returned unscathed to its owners.

“It was working when they reconnected it, and the owners were very pleased to hear that all the chicks had been saved,” she said. “A good result all round.”

Cinderella and ‘extensive entourage’ travelling in horse trailer make it to the ball

Cinderella did get to the ball, along with an “extensive entourage”, despite the fact their trip there did not go entirely according to plan.

Police have shared footage of officers discovering more than 20 people travelling in the back of a horse trailer, on Saturday, 18 November.

Warwickshire Police rural crime team officers pulled over the female driver of a 4×4 towing a trailer on the A422 near Upton House. The officers had been carrying out roadside checks of trailers and plant machinery, following an increase in local thefts.

A Warwickshire Police spokesman said when officers first spoke to the woman she confirmed she was not transporting any horses or livestock, and she was travelling to a ball nearby.

“Officers headed to the trailer to make note of any security marking or vehicle identification number [vin], so that checks could be conducted. While looking at the vin, one of the officers heard some shuffling and tapping coming from inside the trailer,” he said.

“Initially the officer was concerned that a horse must have snuck itself into the trailer, without the knowledge of the driver. It turns out on opening the trailer, some 20 attendees of the ball had opted to utilise the trailer as some sort of pre-ball party wagon transport.”

The force shared footage online of the passengers exiting the trailer and the spokesman said it was “apparent from the comments made to officers, that they had no understanding of how dangerous the situation was”.

“We can only be thankful that the officers hadn’t had to attend a very serious road traffic collision involving the vehicle and trailer,” he said.

“The 39-year old-driver was reported at the scene for several offences, while other officers facilitated Cinderella getting to the ball safely with her extensive entourage.”

The police spokesman told H&H the driver was reported for driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition and having unrestrained passengers in a trailer.

Check your horsebox tyres for safety – and to avoid ‘unlimited’ fine

Horsebox owners are being reminded to “be prepared before they travel” as winter approaches.

National Highways, formerly the Highways Agency, has called on all drivers to prepare for the change in seasons, while October is also tyre safety month.

“In an emergency, roadworthy tyres could be the difference between driving away and the unthinkable,” said Stuart Lovatt, chairman of TyreSafety, which runs the campaign.

It is also a timely reminder of the law change last year, meaning it is illegal for vehicles with a gross mass above 3.5 tonnes to use tyres over 10 years old on the front (steering) axle(s).

“There are actually unlimited fines in England and Wales, and fines of up to £5,000 in Scotland, if you are found to be in breach of that rule,” Claire Barker of PRP Rescue Services told H&H.

She added that it goes without saying that there is the safety aspect of why people should be complying with the law, which runs alongside the legal and financial implications of using unfit tyres.

“For us, tyres are by far the most common cause of breakdown of horseboxes leading to call-outs to us,” she said. “Of course there are times something unavoidable happens, but a huge amount of the time it’s due to tyres that perhaps should have been replaced before the point at which something happened.

“Because horseboxes are often not used every day, when they are parked up, the rubber can deteriorate really quickly. So it’s hugely important to regularly check the tread-depth of your tyres and the sidewalls for any kind of cracking or crazing.”

The latest Government figures show that condition of tyres was the top reason for HGV vehicles failing their MOT in January to March this year.

“Coming into winter, a lot of lorries are likely to be standing for longer periods of time, so it’s really important to keep an eye on those tyres,” added Ms Barker. “With the 10-year rule, which can only be a good thing, it’s important to realise that the spare wheel must also fall within that time period. If we attended a breakdown and were asked to fit a spare that was over 10 years old, rather than provide a new tyre, we wouldn’t be able legally to fit it and send the vehicle off on the road.”

Regardless of vehicle size – horsebox or car and trailer – roadworthiness of the vehicle and condition of all tyres is the driver’s responsibility. This also has potential insurance implications, too.

“Having a tyre blow-out can be so frightening and so dangerous, especially with horses on, as it is very difficult to control a vehicle with moving weight on the back,” she said.

Maintaining vehicles through the colder months is key and the work needed will likely depend on whether a box is used more or less frequently through the winter months.

“Even if you don’t plan on using it very frequently, make sure the fluid levels are topped up and that you’ve drained the [leisure] water tanks, keep an eye on your tyres, start it once a week or more frequently and even take it for a little drive,” she said.

“You never know when you might need to do an emergency vet run and the last thing you want is to discover the thing won’t start or the brakes are locked on.”

More people may be allowed to drive 7.5T horseboxes under new proposals

Drivers could be allowed to drive lorries up to 7.5t without taking an additional test in new Government proposals.

A return to previously held “grandfather rights”, by which those who passed the driving test before 1 January 1997 could drive larger vans and smaller lorries, including horseboxes, up to 7.5t, is among options being considered by the Department for Transport (DfT).

Under current rules, those with a standard car licence may only drive vehicles weighing up to 3.5T, which led to increased demand for small horseboxes.

The DfT is looking at “options to streamline driver licensing and support jobs” in a call for evidence to “help create new opportunities in logistics and support the UK supply chain”. An effect of this would be to give many more horse owners the right to drive a horsebox weighing up to 7.5T.

H&H reported last year on the Government’s decision to scrap the trailer test as part of plans to tackle the HGV driver shortage, so most drivers can now tow a horse trailer without an extra test.

Efforts to mitigate the “global driver shortage” continue, which the Government hopes will support new jobs and “bolster the UK’s supply chain”.

“The views submitted by members of the public and industry professionals will help answer important questions and assist the government with ongoing research into how post-Brexit freedoms are used to remove red tape and create opportunities for people across the country,” a DfT spokesman said.

“Questions around reintroducing grandfather rights explore whether the UK should allow those who hold a normal car driving licence to drive certain larger vans or smaller lorries up to 7.5 tonnes. Prior to 1 January 1997, people who passed their driving test for a normal car also obtained the right to drive heavier, larger vehicles – these entitlements were removed by the EU.

“No decisions have been made on whether these rights should be reintroduced and the Government is keen for views from a wide range of stakeholders to inform its future approach to the issue, as well as the rest of the areas under consideration in the call for evidence.”

The spokesman added that any changes would “need to ensure” safety on the roads and be “economically proportionate”, and that there could be age- or experience-based restrictions, which is covered in the questions asked in the call for evidence.

Horseboxes at risk of being seized if operator licence requirements are not followed

The DVSA has reminded horsebox drivers of when an operator licence is required for transporting horses.

A DVSA spokesman said examiners recently spoke to 20 horsebox owners at Hickstead and were “delighted” to find almost all the vehicles were well maintained, and drivers’ hours rules were being followed.

But a reminder was issued about when an operator licence is required for transporting horses. This applies when a horsebox owner driver is paid money (directly or indirectly) to transport horses or uses the horsebox for a “professional activity”. Even if a horsebox is only used for commercial purposes for a short period such as one day, an operator licence is still required.

“You might not charge somebody directly for transporting a horse but if you charge them for livery or training and offer transport as part of the service, that is considered ‘commercial use’ and you would need an ‘hire and reward’ operator licence if the vehicle or vehicle and trailer combination is over 3,500 kg,” said the spokesman.

The DVSA also states that drivers who receive payment “such as prize money as a result of transporting horses” must also have an operator licence. A spokesman told H&H at roadside checks DVSA examiners are trying to determine whether there is a “professional interest affiliated with the transaction”.

The DVSA spokesman explained: “What they are trying to assess at the roadside is, whether there is a business involved, and if this is a money-making venture – or someone who has a pastime and wants to compete with their horse in their spare time.”

The DVSA also confirmed to H&H that if an individual competes “as a hobby” and won prize money, they would not be deemed as operating as a business or for “hire and reward”.

“These individuals would be exempt, particularly if they were employed elsewhere and riding was a weekend leisure activity,” said the spokesman.

The type of operator licence needed depends on the vehicle, where it is used and who the horses belong to. A restricted licence applies for those who have a horsebox or vehicle towing a trailer, which has a maximum authorised mass of over 3,500kg and are transporting their own horses for commercial purposes. If they do not own the horses they are transporting, a standard national operator’s licence is needed for UK-based journeys. For non-UK journeys, a standard international operator’s licence is required.

Penalties for transporting a horse without the necessary operator licence include the vehicle being impounded – and scrapped after 21 days – unless an appeal is launched to the local traffic commissioner. Operators can also be fined up to £5,000.

Baler twine tied to outside of horseboxes – DVSA clarifies the rules

Horseboxes are not being stopped on the roadside specifically for travelling with baler twine attached to the outside, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has confirmed.

H&H asked the DVSA for clarification after a post on social media mentioned that horseboxes were being checked near Hickstead and that a driver had been told to remove string attached to the outside of their vehicle, as it could be a danger to cyclists.

The DVSA and police have the power to carry out roadside spot checks on vehicles and issue prohibitions – which prevent someone from driving a vehicle until the problem is fixed – or fixed penalties. Roadside checks can include ensuring a vehicle is roadworthy, including checking lights, tyres, trailer couplings, and wheel fixings. An officer can also check tachograph records and that the driver has the correct occupational driving licence, and operator licence, if necessary. For some offences, a driver can be fined between £50 and £300, receive points on their licence, or taken to court.

A DVSA spokesman told H&H there is nothing set out in legislation on baler twine or string attached to a horsebox.

“It’s not something we are actively targeting. If it was a couple of centimetres and doesn’t cause any danger then they wouldn’t be asked to remove it,” said the spokesman.

“It comes down to the risk identified by a vehicle examiner. It would be purely if we identified an immediate risk to road safety. If an examiner encountered a horsebox with a bit of string that was too long that could potentially whip round and cause a risk to any kind of vulnerable road user then we would ask them to remove it, but outside of that there is nothing fixed in terms of our enforcement policy.”

Owning versus hiring horse transport: what are the pros and cons?

If you need to take your horse out and about – whether that’s for competitions and training, a change of scenery for a relaxing ride, or an essential trip to the vets – there are a lot of options available. But should you hire or buy? And do you need a trailer or lorry? There’s a lot to think about when you are considering the pros and cons of owning versus hiring horse transport.

Cost is one of the main considerations as buying a horse lorry in particular is clearly a huge investment, but it’s not just the initial cost that needs to be taken into consideration, maintenance can be a huge factor.

Claire Dolby from Atacanter offers horsebox hire and sales, and says this is one of the main benefits of hiring a horsebox.

“When you hire, you know exactly how much you’re paying, there are no hidden costs and there’s no maintenance connected to it either,” she says.

John Barlow from Barlow Trailers sells and hires horseboxes and trailers and agrees about the maintenance side: “Our vehicles get a 60-point inspection each and every time they go out, and our 7.5 tonne horseboxes are looked after like commercial vehicles. Horseboxes aren’t turnkey solutions. They need to be looked after to keep them safe, prevent breakdowns, and keep them in good condition.”

Tom Janion, managing director of Equi-Trek and Hire-Trek, agrees that maintenance is a significant factor in owning a horsebox, and this is why long-term hire is a growing sector for his company.

“We are now seeing a growing trend for long-term hire as an alternative to purchasing as it allows you to enjoy a new vehicle or trailer without the worry of depreciation or the cost of servicing and MOTS,” he explains.

But, of course, there are downsides to hiring, the main one being that the horse lorry or trailer you want might not be available when you want it, and the time involved in picking up and returning a vehicle or trailer might be significant.

“Our experience of hiring a trailer was good,” says Katie. “The main issue was if I wanted the trailer on a Sunday, I would need to pay for full weekend hire as collection had to be Friday with it being returned on the Monday as the company I used did not open weekends. Weekend hire was a lot more than just a day’s hire.”

Owning a horsebox or trailer removes the issues of availability, but it is not without downsides. There’s the initial cost, finance and maintenance connected, but it has many perks, if you have the budget and storage.

“The convenience factor is a big one with owning a horsebox, and not just in terms of when you want to use it, but the facilities it has too. There’s far more flexibility in terms of design, living, etc, which, if you’re spending a lot of time in the horsebox is really important as it can completely change the experience of a long season,” says Claire.

It’s not just the vehicle that can be hired when it comes to horseboxes, as Ruth Chappell, who owns two horses and is based in Hampshire explains.

“My horse, Geoffrey, needed to go to Rossdales in Newmarket for tests,” she says. “I didn’t have a trailer at that time, so I opted to hire someone with a lorry who could do the whole thing for me. I couldn’t get the time off work, so it was really important to me – a freelance groom at the yard very kindly went with Geoffrey to make sure he had a friendly face.”

Ruby Pepper Butchers has an ex-racehorse who competes in dressage. She has hired both self drive and lorries with drivers and found the latter particularly useful when competing on her own.

“I have hired lorries and trailers with drivers before, especially when I was younger,” says Ruby. “It was great having one less thing to worry about with the driving being done for me. I also didn’t have to find a friend to come with me as an extra pair of hands as the driver was able to do this.”

Another reason to hire could be to try before you buy.

Ally Kelly is a keen amateur rider and blogger. She shows and competes in dressage competitions and she opted to hire a trailer on a long-term basis.

“We’d never had a trailer before, so we hired one for six months before we bought,” says Ally. “It was nice to get mine and my mum’s confidence before buying our own. We hired an Ifor Williams 506 which we felt was a bit small for Mags so when we purchased one we went for the Ifor Williams 511 so he has more room – it was great to be able to try before we bought.”

Another angle to consider with hiring is that you’re not ‘stuck’ with one type of vehicle.

“We have clients who hire different horseboxes or trailers depending on what they’re doing,” says John. “If you’re heading out with friends you might need a bigger lorry. If you’re staying away at a championship, you might want one with a big living area. Or if you’re heading on a long journey to the vets, then you might want a smaller lorry. You can do this when you hire, you can’t when you buy.”

Short-term or day hires are popular with amateur riders, and longer term hires are something that many professional riders consider during particularly busy seasons, to work alongside an owned lorry.

“The longer you hire a horsebox for, the cheaper the day rate becomes,” says Claire from Atacanter. “And it can also help to reduce costs if a professional rider doesn’t need another horsebox all the time, but doesn’t want to hire a transporter and is keen to use members of staff who can drive the horsebox too.”

Tom from Equi-Trek says Hire-Trek offer three different hire options: short, mid-term and long.

“Mid-term, which is anything from two months to 11 months, is very popular for people who don’t want to commit to owning a vehicle and is usually used for the season with six months from March to September being the most popular option,” he says. “We do long-term hire, which is 12 months to 36 months, and is very similar to contract hire with a car, where you never own the vehicle but have a fixed low monthly payment, which includes all the maintenance, warranty and running costs. This is our fastest growing market due to the security it gives people. It also doesn’t get registered on someone’s credit record so has much less of an effect on what they can borrow compared to a finance option.”

Companies will differ in their hiring process, but don’t be surprised if you need to supply ID, driving license and DVLA code, as the latter allows the company to check the details of your license (and what you’re able to drive) as well as the points you may or may not have.

“You can ask to see the MOT and the insurance documents when you hire,” says Claire. “We have self-drive insurance, which is the correct type, but there aren’t many companies that supply this type of insurance and it’s very expensive, so some hire companies may not have it. Do your research.”

When it comes to hiring horseboxes or trailers, John says that reviews from other customers can be very useful, and having a good look around and even filming the condition of the horsebox or trailer before it leaves the showroom can be wise.

“Check your position on the insurance provisions and if the company offers Collision Damage Waiver, take it. Look at the age of the vehicle too. If you’re hiring, expect to have a fairly new vehicle.”

“Make sure you choose a reputable company that has a wealth of experience so that you can discuss your requirements and ensure they are met by purchasing or hiring the right horsebox or trailer for you,” says Tom. “A reputable company will also provide insurance. Unless it is a proper hire company then you will most likely be uninsured and would have a serious issue if stopped by the police or even worse had an accident.

“Also, the safety of the vehicle is a key issue – you don’t want to be hiring an old vehicle and have problems while you are away. Finally, you need to check there is breakdown cover and horse recovery included, just in case the worst happened. Hire-Trek use vehicles that are less than three years old and they come with full equine rescue – it may be a little more expensive, but you get what you pay for!”

Money comes up a lot when horse transportation is mentioned, and it’s easy to see why with small horseboxes having the potential to cost over £40,000, but as John explains, there might be ways to manage this cost.

“A lot of our hires are to people who have bought horseboxes that are not satisfactory and are failing for a variety of reasons. We hear of people who have invested a significant amount of money and have a lovely looking box that has been built on old chassis, which has the potential to make it less reliable,” he says. “Horseboxes are expensive, but if you view it as a longer term cost, look to part exchange it regularly to keep the money in the vehicle and ensure you have something safe to drive, there are ways to manage it.”

Willberry Wonder Pony backs new Happiness Horsebox to help disabled and the seriously ill enjoy the ‘magic’ of horses

A purpose-built horsebox that will enable people with life-changing injuries and illnesses to enjoy “magical” rides with horses has launched its services around the UK.

The not-for-profit Happiness Horsebox is the brainchild of British Horse Society and Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) coach Liz Morrison. Liz came up with the idea five years ago as she had become more aware of the variety of disabilities and illnesses affecting people throughout their lives, including some of her friends.

The lorry, built by Haynes Horseboxes, has been fitted with a hydraulic platform to allow disabled riders to be lifted on to a horse, so they can enjoy rides in “special places” such as the countryside, instead of being restricted to arenas. The box also offers a warm living space, which can be overlooked by two horses, aimed at hospice and care-home visits, during which individuals can spend private time with horses. It can also be booked by para riders for competitions.

Liz started fundraising for the project, and although Covid delayed the build of the horsebox, it has now been completed and was unveiled at the Sir Peter O’Sullevan Lambourn open day in April. More than £80,000 was raised for the horsebox, including funding from the Sir Peter O’Sullevan Charitable Trust, Hannah’s Willberry Wonder Pony, the Greenham Trust, the Country Land and Business Association and Sport England – with support from WTTL driver training.

“Through my RDA coaching I became really interested in what we can do to help people with disabilities. I realised one of the biggest issues is getting people on to a horse, unless you have a lifting platform like you get in some of the bigger RDA centres,” Liz told H&H.

“Enjoying a lovely ride in the countryside is one of these magical things, but it’s the most inaccessible thing if you’ve got a disability so I said ‘Let’s put a lifting platform in the lorry’.”

Liz hopes the project can expand in the future to include more horseboxes based in different regions.

“We are interested in partnerships so we can get more funding and make the horsebox as cheap as possible for people to use when they need it,” she said. “We would like to be able to subsidise it for someone who, say, has cancer and wants to have a last magical ride with their horse somewhere beautiful and private.”

Hannah’s Willberry Wonder Pony donated £12,000 to the Happiness Horsebox.

“Before Hannah was so tragically lost to us she was invited by many leading equestrians to go and have a horsey experience riding their horses or visiting their yards, from the likes of Piggy March to many others,” Miles Toulson-Clarke, a Hannah’s Willberry Wonder Pony trustee, told H&H. “Hannah found during her darkest time those experiences gave her some light and hope, and made her forget all about her horrific illness. When Hannah set up the charity she wanted to be able to provide similar experiences under ‘Willberry’s wishes’.

“Often we’re asked by people who are extremely ill to have a horsey experience but quite often they might find the physical act of riding a horse extremely difficult, so when Liz got in touch with us we were keen to support it because it sounded like a fantastic initiative and we knew it would be very complimentary to our Willberry’s wishes programme. We always have Hannah on our shoulder, thinking whether she would approve or not, and we know she would approve of this.”

New stickers aim to prevent trailer theft following police crackdown

A police force is cracking down on horse trailer theft with a new initiative to deter criminals.

Nottinghamshire Police is providing “tamper-proof” stickers, which can be placed on the side of trailers. The stickers are designed to help highlight when a theft might be taking place as they say “Police – stop if seen moving between 10pm and 5am”.

“As legitimate users of the boxes typically only use the trailers to transport horses and livestock during the day, seeing them being moved at night can be deemed suspicious,” said a police spokesman.

Chief inspector Heather Maelor, the force’s rural crime lead, said Nottinghamshire Police has received several reports of this type of theft taking place as supply issues make trailers “very sought after”.

“This has been recognised as an issue across the region, so our officers have been making extra efforts to combat this theft trend and deter criminals. As part of this, we’ve introduced the stickers, which can then be placed on horseboxes and are difficult for offenders to take off quickly,” she said.

“We know that most of these offences take place overnight, at a time when these trailers aren’t typically in use, so they can offer a simple but effective way of alerting officers and the wider public that a crime is taking place.”

The spokesman added this was “just one of many” tactics Nottinghamshire Police is using to combat rural crime, with a “string of enforcement activity” that has resulted in the recovery of stolen trailers and subsequent criminal investigations. Officers have been visiting farms to hand out the stickers and offer security advice.

“We know that theft of trailers is a serious issue for members of the rural community that can impact livelihoods, so we have redoubled our efforts to do whatever we can to crackdown on this type of offending,” said Ms Maelor.

“As part of this, we have also relaunched the Nottinghamshire Police Horse Watch page on Facebook, where the public can get advice and support. It’s important that anyone who spots any suspicious activity, relating to horsebox thefts or other rural crime matters, reports it to the police straight away. We’d much rather come out and find that it’s nothing to worry about than not be there at the time.”

Nottinghamshire police and crime commissioner Caroline Henry said the force hopes to deter criminals from stealing horseboxes in the first place as part of efforts to tackle rural and wildlife crime.

“Part of our response is seeking to address the concerns that rural communities tell us about, which recently was concerns over a spate of horse box thefts,” she said.

“These stickers are a direct response to these concerns and demonstrate how we are continuing to listen and respond to residents’ concerns.”

Plans to launch a clean-air zone in Greater Manchester this spring have been shelved.

In October 2020 H&H reported on plans announced by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) to introduce the clean air zone, which had been due to open in May. Under the plans, non-compliant vehicles – including horseboxes – over 3.5tonnes would pay £60 per day to drive in the zone, but a discounted rate of £10 was to be available for vehicles that are privately owned. After 1 June 2023, non-compliant vehicles under 3.5 tonnes, including some small vans and flatbed trucks would pay £10 per day.

The plans were met with backlash and concerns from the public around financial hardship – and from the equestrian world including show centres, competitors, and owners who faced being charged to tend to their horses if they drove older vehicles.

But on 23 February TfGM announced the Government has agreed that the zone will not go ahead on 30 May. Greater Manchester’s clean-air leaders have deemed the current plan – developed under a legal direction to meet air quality limits by 2024 – “unworkable” and that it could have created financial hardship for people owing to changes in the availability and affordability of “cleaner vehicles”.

Greater Manchester’s clean-air leaders now have until 1 July 2022 to work with the Government to develop a new plan that will “clean up the air while protecting livelihoods”.

Clean-air signs already erected around Greater Manchester will be covered, and applications for discounts and exemptions have been paused. HGV funding remains open to support people to upgrade and help deliver improved air quality.

“ANPR cameras that have been installed will be utilised, under agreement with Government, to gather real-time data to inform the new plan, including monitoring vehicle fleet renewal trends and specific traffic mix at key locations where nitrogen dioxide levels are in breach of legal limits,” said a TfGM spokesman.

If you spend your weekends rattling down country lanes in a past-its-best car packed to the brim with horsey paraphernalia, while your equine pride and joy slums it behind in a draughty trailer, you might want to look away now.

Because when you’re a five-star showjumper, you certainly get to travel first class as Martin Fuchs’s supergroom Sean Vard reveals in this video as he takes us on a guided tour of his luxury MAN six-horse lorry, complete with jaw-dropping accommodation to rival the Shangri-La.

Starting with the exterior, Sean reveals just how much locker space has been fitted in the stunning vehicle, before going on to guide us through the other enviable features. Inside is a living area in which we would happily take up permanent residence.

“This is a very spacious lorry because it’s only got six places in the back [for the horses] with a big motor home area,” says Sean.

There are three cleverly stored beds – the traditional one above the cab, which folds down and comes with its own private TV, then another large bed over the bathroom while the sofa also transforms into a third sleeping area.

Technology is also to the fore, with several televisions, complete with satellite, a surround sound system and air conditioning

“This living has all the extras you can imagine,” says Sean.

“The bathroom is very spacious – more like a hotel room! It’s nice and comfortable when travelling abroad.”

Last, but certainly not least, the horses also get to travel business class in “the most important area” of the lorry.

“During shows we use it for a bit of storage,” explains Sean. “This truck is stalled for six horses with loads of locker space along the top, good solid separations – also nice for stallions – and a little trough on the front which is handy for giving water on long journeys. There’s good lighting, good air and good ventilation.”

Sean also gives a demonstration of the comfortable rubber floor for the horses to enjoy.

“The horses travel super well in this truck,” says Sean. “And obviously we have cameras above to keep an eye on the horses while moving.”

‘Pay or give up’: fears over plans to charge owners to visit their animals under clean-air rules

Concerns have been raised that clean air proposals could affect animal welfare if owners have to pay daily charges to check on them.

In October 2020 H&H reported on plans announced by Transport for Greater Manchester to introduce a clean air zone in Greater Manchester, which was followed by an eight-week public consultation. In July 2021 plans were finalised and put to the area’s 10 local authorities for approval.

Under the plans, from May 2022 non-compliant vehicles – including horseboxes – over 3.5tonnes must pay £60 per day to drive in the zone, but a discounted rate of £10 is available for vehicles that are privately owned. After 1 June 2023, non-compliant vehicles under 3.5 tonnes, including some small vans and flatbed trucks must pay £10 per day.

Bury-based Jade Hutchinson, who owns two horses and a small flock of sheep, told H&H under the proposals she will need to pay £10 per day to visit her animals in Bolton using her pick-up truck, her only vehicle, and she could have to give up her animals as she would not be able to afford to check them daily.

“If I had to pay £10 a day just to check on my animals it would devastate everything. We’d have no choice but to pay it – or give up. Lots of people don’t realise how many vehicles will be affected,” she said.

“There’s other ways to tackle air pollution without penalising people. It’s going to cause disruption to so many lives and it’s just not going to be manageable.”

To raise awareness of the impact of the proposals on farmers and animal owners – and to show that using public transport is not a feasible option for many – Jade took one of her sheep, Colin, on a bus and was joined by Rebecca Kay with her Shetland pony Ernie, on 11 January.

“I put a post about what I was going to do on the “Rethink the Clean Air Zone — Great Manchester” Facebook group. The first bus didn’t stop, but then an operator arrived by car and said the bus company was happy to support us and that they were going to send an empty bus for us. We were joined on the bus by other supporters who had turned up,” said Jade.

“I can’t believe how much attention it’s brought to the matter. I’ve been doing interviews with local radio stations to keep trying to raise awareness and the Facebook group, run by an admin team, have been speaking to councillors to campaign against the zone.”

A spokesman for the Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) told H&H they would not comment on the Jade’s campaigning or specific concerns, but on 13 January TfGM said the Greater Manchester’s clean air leaders will be asked to seek the Government’s permission to put the second phase of clean air zone funding on hold and ask for an “urgent and fundamental” review of the policy, including the availability and affordability of cleaner vehicles.

“A report to the Greater Manchester air quality administration committee on Thursday (20 January) will set out emerging evidence that global supply chain issues could increase the costs and reduce availability of cleaner vehicles,” said the spokesman.

“More work is needed to understand whether this could create significant financial hardship for commercial vehicle users – already facing fuel and cost of living increases on top of the impact of the pandemic. What this means for Greater Manchester local authorities, and its impact on their ability to comply on time with a legal direction from Government to tackle illegal levels of air pollution, is also to be determined.”

Calling pro riders and transporters: is your authorisation about to expire?

Those who transport horses as part of their business have been reminded to check when their transporter authorisation is up for renewal.

Defra has contacted British Equestrian to make the organisation and its member bodies aware that a “significant number” of transporter authorisations are due to expire in 2022. Transporter authorisations last for five years and apply to those who move horses on journeys of over 65km (40 miles) within Great Britain in connection with professional riding and competition, livery and stabling and transporters who move horses for charities and/or animal rescues.

People travelling their own horses, not in the course of business or trade, to a competition or for any other purpose for pleasure do not need transporter authorisation. But a professional rider, or a transporter taking a horse to a show on behalf of an owner, must have authorisation.

There are two types of transporter authorisation; type one (short journey), which are required for journeys over 65km and up to eight hours in duration, and type two (long journey), required for those transporting animals for journeys over 65km and lasting more than eight hours. A journey is defined as the time from when the first animal is loaded on to a means of transport at the premises of departure until the last animal is unloaded at the final destination. Transporters travelling more than 65km must also have a valid certificate of competence and vehicle approval certificate.

The Government website states that to comply with current welfare-in-transport regulations, animal transporters must submit an application to renew their authorisation if it has expired. Failure to do so risks heavy penalties if transporters are found to be operating without valid authorisation. A renewal application can be obtained from the Animal and Plant Health Agency.

A horsebox towing a makeshift trailer with a combined total of five horses on board was pulled over by police, having been spotted on one of the UK’s busiest motorways.

Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit spotted the contraption on the M1 last Thursday (2 September), sharing pictures of the get-up on social media with the hashtag “#wow”.

Images appear to show a van-style horsebox towing a flatbed trailer, which had the body of another old horsebox or trailer strapped on top.

Police said there were four horses in the front vehicle and one in the rear trailer.

Officers pulled the driver over, and a safer vehicle was called to take the party on their way.

“M1. No, an old horsebox, rachet-strapped to the bed of a trailer, is not acceptable — even more so with a total of five horses being transported. Plus a massive oil leak and an expired licence,” tweeted the Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit Twitter account.

“Not a quick job but seized, alternative transport sorted and road safety improved.”

A Derbyshire police spokesman told H&H that the driver was reported for traffic offences.

Staying safe after a horsebox breakdown: advice for those unsure what to do

EQUESTRIANS have been reminded what to do when faced with a broken-down horsebox on the road following recent tragic events.

On 24 August, Nick Gauntlett’s stallion Party Trick and three horses belonging to Sophie Hulme died when Nick’s broken-down horsebox was hit by a lorry on the A9. Following this, concerns have been raised on social media about what to do when a breakdown occurs – especially when this happens on a road without a hard shoulder or on a smart motorway.

Chris Facer, Equine Rescue Services’ (ERS) network and business development manager, told H&H that horsebox owners should check vehicles before setting off, and ensure they have equine-specific breakdown cover in place, but said there will always be “the unforeseen or unexpected incident”.

In the event of a breakdown, ERS recommends switching on hazard warning lights, and sidelights if it is dark or daylight is fading, and placing a warning triangle approximately 45 metres behind the vehicle to give other drivers time to react. But this guidance differs if the lorry is on a motorway or major road.

“Do not use a warning triangle on a motorway – it’s dangerous to walk along the hard shoulder and the speed of passing traffic could cause the triangle to be blown into a live lane, putting others at risk,” said Mr Facer, adding that owners should never attempt to repair horseboxes on a motorway or busy main road.

“Do not attempt to open the ramp. The noise from the road, particularly if the traffic is heavy, can spook horses.”

Mr Facer added that smart motorways are dangerous places to break down, particularly in live lanes.

“Wherever possible, leave the motorway or get to an emergency refuge area – this is the safest option. Contact Highways England and make them aware of your position, and contact your breakdown provider,” he said, adding that it is important to have sufficient phone battery and the app What3Words on a phone to pinpoint the breakdown location. Anyone in a potentially dangerous location or needs police assistance should call 101.”

Claire Barker, managing director of PRP Rescue Services Ltd, told H&H many of the company’s customers have been extremely worried following Nick Gauntlett’s accident.

“The fact that Nick and his family were able to get out and away from their vehicle is something that we are able to take from the awful accident to help keep our customers safe,” she said.

“Horse owners are often extremely reluctant to leave their horses which we really do understand, however the most important piece of safety advice we can give is to do exactly that. Certainly the last place anyone should be if a vehicle is stranded on a busy road is in the back with the horses. Traffic noise can be unsettling, and often if a vehicle has stopped and then there are people around them the horses will expect to be unloaded which may unsettle them further. A confined space with an unpredictable animal (which even the quietest horse can become under these circumstances) is not a safe place to be. We have been saying this to customers for years but sadly it is only now, following this accident that they are taking our advice.”

Highways England launched the “Go Left” campaign this year, which advises that if drivers get into trouble on a motorway, they should move into the left lane, enter the emergency area or hard shoulder, use hazard lights and leave the vehicle to stand behind a safety barrier if there is one and it is safe to do so.

Anyone who is unable to exit the vehicle, has stopped in a live traffic lane or feels in danger should stay in the vehicle with seatbelts and hazard lights on.

“We are acutely aware of the dynamic situation of horse transport. Incidents are dealt with according to their individual circumstance,” a Highways England spokesman told H&H.

“We advise to always move transporters to a place of relative safety if possible, where transfers can take place safely. If not possible, then horses may be transferred from one transport to another, usually with traffic stopped in both directions by national highways traffic officers.”

Coach and two-star eventer Tara Williams who had a broken-down horsebox with her horse on board on the A419 in April 2019, has bought reflective adhesive strips for the rear of her lorry following recent events.

“The equestrian community has felt anxious about travel after what happened to Nick, and devastated for those involved. It made me look at my lorry and I realised we had very little in the way of reflective strips or hi-vis. Although you have hazard lights, they won’t work if your battery is not working,” she said.

“I think it will be a while until people are comfortable again – and it’s no bad thing people are realising we’ve got to be prepared.”

Rider’s warning after £500 fine for straying into low-emission zone

A rider who got caught out by a £500 fine for unknowingly driving her lorry in a low-emission zone has warned others to be aware — and is shocked at the size of the penalty.

Karen Whittaker drove from her home near Rye, East Sussex, to a venue in north Kent on 3 May. A week later, the notice of the fine arrived in the post.

“It was my box and I went through the zone but I was totally ignorant of it,” she told H&H.

“I’m 41 miles from that venue and don’t normally go that way but there was nothing else on and I wanted to do a bit of dressage.

“I did live in that area when it came in, and there used to be a sign as you entered the London borough but I had a car and trailer then. However many years later, I’m driving the lorry up there and there were small signs but they just weren’t on my radar.”

Karen appealed online and six weeks later, the reply came back to say the fine stood.

“It said sorry but nothing we can say; you did it and it doesn’t matter you’ve never done it before, you have to pay up,” she said. “It’s £500 and if you don’t pay in 14 days, it goes up to £1,000.

“I’m in the legal business and no one’s above the law, and ignorance is no defence, read the Ts and Cs, I know I can’t get out of it. But my beef is with the size of the fine; you’d get less of one for mugging an old lady or vandalising a house.”

Riders’ lorry concerns as clean air proposals are finalised

How will planned low-emission zones in Greater Manchester and other areas affect riders, and what mitigation measures are in place? H&H finds out

CLEAN air zone proposals have been finalised for Greater Manchester including funding towards upgrading non-compliant vehicles – but equestrians say the support is not enough.

Following the announcement a clean air zone would be created in Greater Manchester as part of the Government’s plans to improve air quality, and subsequent public consultation (news, 8 October), Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has published its final plans which have been put to the area’s 10 local authorities for approval.

From 30 May 2022, non-compliant vehicles – including horseboxes – over 3.5 tonnes must pay £60 per day to drive in the zone. Private vehicles registered to Greater Manchester owners can apply for a discounted charge of £10 per day. Non-compliant vehicles under 3.5 tonnes must pay £10 per day, which has been delayed until 1 June 2023.

Under the plans, £87.9m of Government funding has been made available to help people upgrade non-compliant vehicles or buy replacements. Up to £7,000 is available for owners of vehicles from 7.5 to 18 tonnes, up to £5,000 for 3.5-7.5-tonne vehicles and up to £4,500 for 3.5-tonne vehicles classed as light goods vehicles by the DVLA.

A TfGM spokesman confirmed to H&H owners of horseboxes registered in Greater Manchester that meet certain criteria, based on the size and classification of the vehicle, are eligible to apply and applications are expected to open from November 2021.

Bury-based rider Helena Pixton, who took part in the consultation, told H&H the funding and discounts do not go far enough.

“I don’t think they are taking into account that you would usually expect your existing box to contribute to buying a new one, but who is going to buy your old box now if it’s not compliant? It’s worth scrap,” she said.

“You can apply for the discount if you live in Greater Manchester, but the plans are going to put off people who don’t live here from coming to use equestrian facilities so that leaves centres with a problem.”

Stephen Hague, owner of Dean Valley Equestrian Centre which hosts British Showjumping competitions, told H&H he is “very concerned”.

“We have a lot of clients that come from Yorkshire, Scotland, Derbyshire – anyone getting here will have to come through Greater Manchester, so it’s a massive problem for us,” he said.

“If it has the impact we’re expecting it will close us down. On a good day we can jump 220 horses – on a bad day we still have more than 100. If three-quarters of those people can’t come then it’s not viable to run. That’s the situation we’re in and we can’t do anything about it.”

Other cities with low-emission and clean-air zones include London and Bath, while more are planned across the UK, including in Portsmouth, Glasgow and Edinburgh. In Bath exemptions for horseboxes include a reduced charge of £9 per day instead of £100 for non-compliant vehicles over 3.5 tonne and classed as private heavy goods vehicles.

In Portsmouth non-compliant horseboxes over 3.5 tonnes are exempt from paying the daily charge for up to 10 days per year. Veterinary ambulances have a lifetime exemption and horseboxes under 3.5 tonne are not charged.

“The Government-imposed clean air zone that charges certain older, more polluting vehicles is just one of the ways we are improving air quality in Portsmouth. As part of this, it’s important that we consider the needs of all vehicle owners,” councillor Dave Ashmore, Portsmouth cabinet member for safety and environment, told H&H.

What to do if you haven’t used your horsebox for a while: your essential checklist

H&H has investigated what, if anything, you should do with your horsebox if it is parked up for a period of time to help keep them maintained, so that they will be in good working order when the time comes for you to use it again.

Graham Hutton, manager of E.H. Hutton Coachbuilders Ltd, a business that was first established in 1958, shares his tips for horsebox maintenance if it is parked up for a period of time:

Move your horsebox forwards or backwards 12 inches every now and then to help prevent your tyres from deforming or cracking after being sat on one spot for a length of time
Isolating or disconnecting your lorry batteries will help prevent them going flat
If possible start your lorry at least once a month, but don’t rev it immediately — give the oil a chance to run around the engine first, and then increase the revs. In some older lorries, the batteries won’t start charging until your lorry has been pushed over a certain number of revs. Aim to run your lorry for around 30 minutes
Don’t worry about the gearbox oil in your horsebox — it will circulate when you start the engine
Air brakes can freeze on if left for too long, so when you start your lorry and move it backwards and forwards to help maintain the tyres, make sure you use your brakes a few times as well
If the weather turns wet, check that your horsebox isn’t leaking anywhere as you can end up with serious mechanical damage if water is pooling into your lorry
Don’t leave the ramp down on your horsebox — it damages the springs
If freezing temperatures are forecast, make sure there is no water stored in your lorry as it can cause pipes to burst
If your lorry is accessible and on private land and you have the space to do so, taking it down the drive and back is a good option
If you have a generator on your lorry, you can leave that unstarted for longer than your lorry engine

SORN

You might have considered applying a SORN to your vehicle. You need to make a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) when you take a vehicle ‘off the road’ and you want to stop taxing and insuring it. Your vehicle is off the road if you don’t keep or use it on a public road, for example if it’s in a garage, on a drive or on private land. You can not SORN a vehicle if it is kept on the public highway.

You must make a SORN in any of the following situations:

your vehicle isn’t taxed
your vehicle isn’t insured (even for a short time, for example because there’s a delay renewing your policy)
you want to break a vehicle down for parts before you scrap it
you buy or receive a vehicle and want to keep it off the road (you can’t transfer a SORN from the previous keeper)

If you decide to SORN your horsebox, then legally there is no requirement to have insurance in place. However, you would be unable to use your vehicle on the road under any circumstances, even for an emergency. In addition, if the vehicle was stolen or suffered fire damage, without insurance you wouldn’t be able to claim.

Insurance points to consider

If you are trying to save money, speak to your insurance provider about whether it’s possible to downgrade your horsebox insurance based on driving fewer miles across the year, but check the small print for any charges that may apply. These may cancel out the saving you are trying to make.

While cancelling your breakdown cover might appear to be an easy win, in most cases you won’t receive a refund if you do so, but it is worth checking with your policy provider. It would also leave you without cover if you needed to transport your horse for emergency vet treatment and your lorry broke down on the way.

Firefighters save heavily pregnant mare whose leg went through horsebox wall

Firefighters stepped in to save a heavily pregnant mare whose leg had gone through a horsebox wall in their second equine rescue in three days.

Blue Watch from Alfreton Community Fire Station, Derbyshire, were called to the aid of the mare, who was being taken to York to give birth, on 3 June.

“We had a call to say the horse was stuck,” watch crew member Mick Bollands told H&H. “Her leg had gone through the side of the horsebox and was sticking out; it looked a bit horrible when we got there.

“The drivers had pulled over and undid the partition, and the horse had fallen over on to her side, and she was stuck.”

A vet was called to sedate the mare and the crew made a plan to free her.

“We cut a hole around where her leg was stuck, put a couple of strops around her and pulled her back into the lorry,” Mr Bollands said.

“Because they weren’t far away from home, we blocked the hole up so they could drive back to the farm. The vet sedated the horse again and we pulled her out of the lorry and she went into her field.

“We had a message later from the owner to say everything was ok.”

Mr Bollands said the mare suffered only grazes and minor cuts where she was stuck.

Alfreton is the base for the county’s large-animal rescue unit, with a specialist lorry-mounted crane. This had been put to good use on 1 June to save 33-year-old mare Jade, who had gone down in her field and could not get back up.

‘Do the right thing’: Police appeal after car collides with horsebox on motorway

Police are appealing for witnesses after a car collided with the back of a horsebox on the M65.

Lancashire Police are seeking the driver of a vehicle that was seen on the motorway shortly before the incident, in which one person was seriously injured, yesterday afternoon (30 May).

It is believed that the Toyota Prius involved in the collision “travelled into the same lane” as the horsebox, to avoid a small black car that had cut in front of it as the motorway narrows from three lanes to two, near junction five of the eastbound carriageway.

The driver of the Prius suffered minor injuries but his passenger, a 63-year-old woman from Blackburn, suffered a serious injury to her arm and was taken to hospital. No horses were injured in the incident.

The black car did not stop, and police “urgently” want to trace it.

Investigating officer Sergeant Dave Hurst said: “We need to find the vehicle involved, which we believe to be small and black, so we can speak to the driver.

A rider has urged others to check their horseboxes for birds’ nests after her lorry came close to catching fire on the A3.

Ruth Almond and her partner Sarah Dwyer-Coles were about five miles from home en route to Merrist Wood Equine Arena in Surrey last Friday (14 May) when they realised something was wrong.

“We could smell something that wasn’t right,” Ruth told H&H.

“We couldn’t work it out. We stopped, crawled under the lorry and couldn’t see anything. We carried on and got to the A3. There’s a bit of an uphill slog there and as we were about halfway up, smoke started filling the cab and the living.”

Ruth said they were just passing a lay-by so managed to pull over and stop.

“I pulled the fire extinguisher out but the cap and mechanism broke in my hands so it didn’t work,” she said. “I phoned the fire brigade and police, and my horsebox mechanic Barry Gray because I knew he wasn’t far away.

“He arrived before the fire brigade and tilted the cab — I didn’t have the rods to tilt it with me — and we found a smouldering bird’s nest on the turbo.”

Ruth said there was another bird’s nest on the radiator that had not caught fire. She believes the fact the turbo had to kick in to get up the hill produced more heat, making that nest catch.

“Thankfully, the nest just smouldered and eventually went out,” she said. “Because we’d stopped, it stopped heating up, so the nest had stopped burning and, thank god, we managed to get it out.

“The horse area hadn’t filled with smoke but I was really concerned about my gas bottle. I had no idea what to do as on that bit of the road, there’s a big bramble bush and a ditch; we’d have had to get the horse off on the A3.”

The lorry was undamaged and the pair were able to drive Sarah’s small tour dressage horse Casino Royale home that day.

“We were so lucky,” Ruth said. “Barry showed us a picture of another lorry [pictured, above] that had the same thing and did catch fire. He’d checked ours only the other day and said to be aware of birds’ nests; that was six days before and I’d never have thought two nests would be built in that time.”

Ruth also wanted to share the other safety principles she has learnt from the incident.

“If you’ve got a tilt cab, and don’t have the rods to tilt it and the fire’s under the cab, you’re in trouble,” she said.

Charity horsebox stolen en route to collect donkey: ‘we are incredibly sad’

Crooks have stolen a welfare charity’s horsebox that was on its way to collect a donkey from a sanctuary.

Greater Manchester Police and the Donkey Sanctuary are appealing for information after the charity’s van was taken from outside a hotel overnight between yesterday (19 April) and today.

The empty vehicle was parked outside the Premier Inn hotel in Denton, Manchester, during an overnight stop to collect a donkey from the charity’s Manchester sanctuary in Abbey Hey. The donkey, who was due to be collected today, was to be taken to the Donkey Sanctuary’s headquarters in Devon.

“We’re incredibly sad that someone has chosen to target the Donkey Sanctuary like this – we are a charity that relies entirely on donations, so we can be there for donkeys in greatest need,” said the charity’s head of welfare, Hannah Bryer.

The van is a white, Peugeot Equitrek Boxer, branded with the Donkey Sanctuary logo and has the registration YJ69 EFY

Anyone with information is urged to contact Greater Manchester Police on 101, quoting crime reference number 459 20/04/2021.

The Donkey Sanctuary is an international equine welfare sanctuary and runs 10 sanctuaries in the UK and Europe, providing lifelong care to more than 7,000 donkeys and mules.

As competition and training activity restarts this week, equestrians have been reminded about what to do in the event of a breakdown, and how to try to prevent such incidents.

Following the easing of lockdown restrictions and the resumption of competitions and arena hire from today (29 March), Highways England and the British Horse Society have advised horsebox users about vehicle checks that should be performed before setting off, and what to do in an emergency.

BHS safety team leader Des Payne said the safety of drivers, their horses and those in vehicles around them is “paramount” and the society strongly advises that all possible steps are taken to minimise the risk of a breakdown occurring.

“It’s vitally important that thorough vehicle checks are carried out before every journey, regardless of how frequently you use your mode of equine transport,” he said.

“It’s also important that trailers are professionally serviced at least once a year, like servicing a horsebox, ensuring all areas of the vehicle have been rigorously examined. Before towing, it’s crucial that all trailer components are fit for purpose. There are multiple checks that should be carried out on your mode of transport and a detailed list of these can be found at bhs.org.uk/transporting-horses.”

Mr Payne added that in the event of a breakdown on the motorway or major A road, individuals should not enter the horse compartment – and should not unload a horse, unless the police or agencies have granted permission.

“The BHS also recommends that you take out quality breakdown cover specifically for equine recovery, otherwise a rescue, particularly from a motorway, has the potential to be very expensive,” he said.

Highways England, which has launched a campaign reminding road users to “go left” in the event of a breakdown, recorded 631 breakdowns on motorways involving horseboxes in 2020.

“Safety is our top priority and we know that no one plans to break down but the unexpected does happen,” said Stuart Lovatt, Highways England head of strategic road safety.

“We also know how important animals of all shapes and sizes are to their owners which is why it is so important to know what to do in an emergency. By following simple safety advice we want all those traveling on the motorway to feel more in control and confident.”

In the event of a breakdown Highways England recommends leaving the motorway if possible. If this is not possible, road users should put their left indicator on and move into an emergency area, on to a hard shoulder, motorway service area, left-hand verge or A road lay-by. Horseboxes and towing vehicles should have their hazard warning lights on, and if it is dark, side lights should also be on.

“On a motorway without a hard shoulder, it should be possible for most vehicles experiencing a problem to reach an emergency area. These are spaced regularly, and are marked by a clearly visible orange road surface and blue signs featuring an orange SOS telephone symbol,” advises Highways England.

“If it is safe to do so, and you can get out with any passengers, exit your vehicle on the side furthest from traffic. If it is not safe to do so, stay in your vehicle and wait for help. Keep well away from moving traffic and your own vehicle. Get behind a safety barrier where there is one, and where it is safe to do so. If you’re on a verge, be aware of any unseen hazards such as uneven ground or debris.”

New law on horsebox tyres: equestrians urged to check their vehicles

Horsebox owners are urged to check their tyres after new legislation came into force on 1 February.

Tyres aged over 10 years old are no longer permitted on the front steered axles of any vehicle weighing more than 3.5 tonnes, including privately owned horseboxes.

While the new legislation refers to “HGVs”, a Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) spokesman confirmed to H&H that this means any vehicle over 3.5 tonnes.

This includes vehicles used for private use, meaning those not used under an operator’s licence must also comply with the new rules.

“This new landmark legislation will help to protect all road users against unsafe vehicles,” the spokesman told H&H.

“Drivers, owners and operators are responsible for the safety of their vehicles, so we advise them to start checking the age of their tyres to ensure they’ll meet the new requirements.”

The manufacturer’s date code must be legible on all tyres on HGVs, as well as on trailers over 3.5 tonnes, and some other vehicles.

The Countryside Alliance (CA) has urged horsebox and livestock carrier vehicle owners to check their tyres and ensure they comply.

“If tyres exceed the age limit it could come at considerable expense to vehicle owners with a dangerous fail at the annual test which means it can’t be driven away until the fault has been repaired,” said Polly Portwin, from the CA.

“It would also result in an immediate prohibition notice being issued if inspected at a DVSA enforcement check.

“We are highlighting this change in legislation in order to help ensure that our supporters are fully aware of the updated rules and can make sure their vehicles are compliant.”

Lorry maintenance: How to ensure your horsebox is fit for the road post-lockdown H&H Plus

Alex Robinson speaks to industry experts who advise on how to ensure your horsebox is fit for the road post-lockdown

Your lorry has probably spent much of this year standing in the driveway with little to no use. But as competitions gather momentum, it’s vital to ensure your vehicle is in full working order so you don’t encounter any problems on your travels.

Charles Oakley from Oakley Horseboxes recommends that all lorries have their mechanics and bodywork serviced, as many will have been left idle for the past six months.

“Horseboxes have numerous moving parts, and over time with no use they can seize up,” says Charles. “But this can be rectified with a body service. We check everything from ramp and partition operations to horse area floor safety. We check all appliance operations such as electrical, heating and hot water systems, batteries and generator. If your box is made of a higher quality material – such as stainless steel, which doesn’t corrode – things might not have deteriorated as much as they might do on a more economical build.”

Brian Burton from Essex Vehicle Inspection agrees that when a lorry has been left idle for a long period of time without maintenance, some of the parts can start to stick.

“The main things to check are the tyres, tyre sidewalls for cracking, and brakes for binding,” says Brian. “Check the handbrake, too, as this can get sticky, though moving the vehicle every couple of weeks should stop this. If you are unable to move the box then run a trickle charge on the battery to stop it going flat.

“When I go to inspect boxes, one thing I always find is that the gas appliances and pipe work have never been checked by a qualified gas engineer and have not been issued a safety certificate. Over a period of time the flexible pipes and joints can become leaky; a check is relatively inexpensive and will improve the safety of the box. The same goes for the hook-up system; I would also have this checked by an electrician who should issue a safety certificate.”

Visible issues

Chris Facer from Equine Rescue Services says that before any planned trip, the lorry needs to be checked for any visible issues. Chris calls these “walk around checks” and they involve both the interior and exterior of the vehicle.

“Start by sitting in the driver’s seat and check the driving mirrors for damage,” advises Chris. “Check the windscreen wipers and washers operate correctly; the weather might be fine when you set off but conditions may change during your journey. Check the dashboard warning lights and gauges are operating correctly, particularly the fuel gauge, making sure you have sufficient fuel for your journey. If your lorry has air brakes, start the engine and make sure the air builds up correctly and there are no leaks. Check the service brake [handbrake] is not obstructed by anything loose in the cab.

“On the outside, check all the fluid levels including engine oil, engine coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid and windscreen washer fluid, and top up where necessary. Ensure all the lights and indicators are working correctly and all the lenses are clean.

“There should be no obvious oil, water or fuel leaks from under the lorry. Check your tyre pressures are set correctly and that there is sufficient tread. Look for any damage or splits on the sidewalls of your tyres, and if you carry a spare tyre ensure it is serviceable. Finally, check exterior body panels, lockers, doors, that ramps are secure and floors are structurally sound.”

If any faults are found during the walk around check, they should be sorted before you leave the yard.

“It could save you a lot time, trouble, expense and stress as well as keeping you and others safe,” says Chris. “By far the most common single cause of a breakdown is tyre failure. Often lorries are stood in one position for long periods, sometimes in mud, particularly during winter months, and this can cause flat spots on the tread and deterioration of the sidewalls.”

Tom Janion from Equi-Trek says that horse owners should pay extra attention to the flooring in vehicles.

“This is not so important where the floor is aluminium, but if they are made from wood they can easily rot and become damaged,” he explains. “One of the most common issues with a lorry is poor flooring, and the fact it has not been driven for a while is no excuse for not keeping a close eye on bodywork and general maintenance.

“A professional service should include checks on the body, chassis, mechanics, the water system and gas. Professional checks, especially of the gas system, could mean the difference between life or death.”

When it comes to upkeep of aesthetics, Tom says that a bit of TLC goes a long way to maintain a smart horsebox you can be proud of.

“At Equi-Trek we have a team on hand to offer advice for refurbishment jobs,” he says. “But a few ideas to spruce up your lorry include new rubber flooring, new panels on the partitions, a good power wash in the horse area and polish of the windows makes a huge difference.

“On the outside, touch up any damaged paintwork, and in the living area new upholstery and blinds will help to improve the overall look enormously.”

Don’t put off the MOT

Tom Janion of Equi-Trek recommends getting your lorry checked now. “The extensions granted to HGV plating tests will start to come to an end in September,” he explains. “There are currently very long lead times on appointments so act early to keep your truck legally on the road.”

Charles Oakley of Oakley Horseboxes adds: “For the past six months, MOT stations have been closed. We see these next few quieter months as prime period in time to have your horsebox serviced ready for next year’s season.”

Time for a new lorry

A box is a big expense – how do you know when it’s really time to get a new one?

“I can look at a 25-year-old box and there is nothing wrong with it, whereas I’ve seen eight-year-old boxes that have all sorts of problems,” says Brian Burton from Essex Vehicle Inspection. “Every vehicle is an individual. Most horseboxes are in their second life after being used as a commercial vehicle, so a high mileage isn’t something to worry about.”

Chris Facer of Equine Rescue Services says: “You know it’s time [for a new lorry] when the current one becomes uneconomic to repair. If circumstances change, for example if you are now carrying larger horses which will take the lorry over its weight limit, it’s time for a change.”

Equi-Trek’s Tom Janion warns that the maintenance costs for an older vehicle can rocket: “Once a vehicle reaches 100,000 miles it is time to consider looking at a new lorry. By then servicing and maintenance bills may have increased and it can be more cost-effective to purchase a new one.”

Confusion abounds about who needs a operator’s licence when moving horses by lorry, and what additional paperwork is required for those working as a business. H&H speaks to experts to help unravel this complex issue...

Horsebox drivers must ensure they have operators’ licences if needed and comply with all requirements, or risk facing the legal consequences.

Owen Evans, director of Essex Driver Training, told H&H many equestrians either do not have the correct licences, or have them but do not fulfil the requirements.

“When you’re in a lorry, you’re not a rider any more, you’re the same as Mr Tesco; it’s the law,” he said. “If your equestrian activity is operated through a business, whether or not the horsebox is owned privately, you will need an operator’s licence.”

Mr Evans explained that operators’ licences are a must for those who transport horses, or any other goods, for hire and reward, or in the course of their trade or business, for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes.

This covers horse transporters but also professional riders, producers, sole traders and those competing above a level deemed as amateur.

There are different types of licence: restricted, which covers most riders, and standard national and international. Mr Evans advised contacting a driver trainer or the DVSA to determine which is needed.

He also stressed that in holding such a licence, the holder is bound by a contract to fulfil requirements such as ensuring vehicles are roadworthy and keeping appropriate records.

“If the DVSA turns up and you haven’t got the records you should be keeping, you can end up in a public inquiry,” he said. “They have the power to say you’re not a fit and proper person to hold the licence, or fit to be a company director. They have the power to do that.”

Lucy Katan, founder of the British Grooms Association (BGA) and Equestrian Employers Association (EEA) told H&H travelling horses is a complex issue.

“There is so much to think about with so many rules and regulations,” she said. “Employers have a responsibility to ensure things are done correctly and that they are aware of rules and regulations, including, but not limited to, having an operator’s licence.

“The BGA and EEA now have on their websites a new comprehensive guide to transporting horses for grooms, employers and owners to get all the information they need to ensure they are compliant.”

A DVSA spokesman told H&H the aim of operators’ licences is to improve safety, protect the environment and “maintain a level playing field”.

“Owners of horseboxes weighing over 3.5 tonnes need an operator licence if their activities generate a profit or are at least cost-neutral through prize money or sponsorship,” he said.

“A licence is not required if the prize money is not part of the expected income of an amateur activity and those winnings are on an incidental basis.

“We detect operator licence issues through our roadside checks and responding to reports from the public.

“Operators can be fined up £5,000 for not having an operator licence and risk having their vehicle being impounded and scrapped after 21 days.”

Self-drive horsebox hire is a perfect solution for horse owners who do not want the expense of owning and maintaining their own horsebox, but who are still keen to get their horses out and about.

Here we explain how it works…

What’s on offer?

A range of horseboxes are available to hire across the market. The most popular are 3.5T horseboxes, which can be driven on a standard driving licence. Some companies also offer 4T, 4.5T and 7.5T vehicles, should you require a little more space, or perhaps living accommodation too. Some hire companies also have even larger horseboxes available.

How much does self-drive horsebox hire cost?

The average cost for hiring a 3.5T horsebox for one weekday is around £100. Prices tend to be around £20 more for weekend hire for one day.

How does it work?

Each company has their own individual terms for self-drive horsebox hire, so you need to check those first, but it is common for them to have a lower age limit in order to hire — these vary from 21 to 25 depending on who you book with. Many companies also have an upper age limit of 75 too.

You will need a full valid driving licence (if hiring a 3.5T horsebox), and most companies require you to have held your licence for at least two years before hiring.

Additional drivers can be authorised with most companies for a little extra cost — they also must have a valid driving licence and the same terms and conditions will apply as for the main driver.

Most companies will require you to present at least one recent utility bill (some require two bills), a credit or debit card with the same name as the one shown on the driving licence of the person driving the horsebox and also a DVLA Check Code to make sure you don’t have too many points to be insured.

Horseboxes are usually hired with a full tank of diesel, and as you would when hiring a car, it is expected that you refill the vehicle before returning it. Failure to do so will incur a refuelling charge.

You will need to closely check the insurance terms for each hire company and you will need to insure your horse for travel as this will not be covered by the vehicle’s insurance. You must always carry your horse’s passport when travelling.

Each horsebox will have a specific payload depending on the lorry’s build, and it is illegal to exceed this. It is the hirer’s responsibility not to overload the vehicle they are driving, but in order to do that, you need to know what the payload is so ask the company you are hiring the vehicle from. Remember this isn’t just the weight of the horses – it also needs to include all of your kit, the driver, passengers and the fuel and water you have on board.

If the truck is stopped and found to be overweight, it is the driver who is held responsible. Penalties can include fines, or even a court appearance, while the vehicle will not be allowed to continue while it is overweight and could be impounded. Driving a vehicle that is overweight also invalidates its insurance.

Many companies have a mileage limit — charges per mile will be incurred after that. For example, one company has a 200-mile limit and you will be charged 35p per mile once you go over that limit.

Some horsebox hire companies require you to fully clean the box before returning it, others don’t, but it is always required for you to remove any droppings before returning the vehicle.

Owners have been reminded to check the small print when choosing a horsebox breakdown recovery service to ensure they are aware of what policies do and do not cover.

As demand for recovery has increased since competition restarted (news 30 July), PRP Rescue Services managing director Jon Phillips told H&H owners should choose a policy with a reliable equine breakdown provider.

“Cover should include recovery by professional agents for the lorry, and separate transport for the horses, to any destination of your choice,” he said. “Some policies will only take the lorry to the nearest garage – but bury that in the small print.”

Mr Phillips advises against policies that insist horseboxes carry spare tyres. He said because by law a tyre fitter must only fit a tyre which is in excellent condition, many owners can be caught out if the tyre on board is not in good enough condition as the fitter will refuse to use it.

Owner Jo Turner was travelling with her daughter and her horse on 8 August when, on hitting a pothole, a safety mechanism in the horsebox aimed at preventing fire when the vehicle hits something with force was triggered. This meant the fuel tank was cut off and the engine stopped.

Ms Turner contacted her breakdown agent Equine Rescue Services (ERS), via her insurer, and was told she was not covered and would be charged as it had been an accident, not a mechanical failure.

ERS has since told H&H an error was made and Ms Turner should have been covered, and has apologised for this.

“Since the incident I’ve been thinking of scenarios that could happen and whether I’m covered or not,” said Ms Turner. “I assumed when you pay for recovery you get whatever you need, and this will make me look at it more carefully.”

ERS network and business development manager Chris Facer told H&H the company covers most aspects of a breakdown, including mechanical issues such as engine failure, tyre blow-outs, electrical or ramp issues.

Incidents caused by “human error” such as leaving lights on or using the wrong fuel are not covered and are chargeable, as is a road traffic collision, which falls under the owners’ horsebox insurance.

“Where we can’t do a repair roadside, we would recover the vehicle and arrange horse transport. We never recover a horse on the back of a recovery vehicle – that’s a big no-no,” he said. “When looking for cover these are the sorts of things people should be asking because there are people who unfortunately who would recover horses on low-loaders and things like that and it’s not in the best interest of the horse.”

Mr Facer urged owners to be aware of “cheap” policies and limitations.

“You don’t always get what you think so make sure you’re getting what you really want. If someone is only travelling locally a certain policy might suit, but if they’re travelling nationally they might need more.”

On 6 July, British-based Australian event rider Andrew Hoy picked up his brand new horsebox and its accompanying trailer, and we think it’s one of the most jaw-dropping bits of kit we’ve seen.

This truck and trailer was built in close collaboration with Stefanie and Andrew Hoy, German company Roelofsen, for Hoy Eventing.

The horsebox with pop-up and pop-out offers sleeping space for five people and can travel up to five horses, with the trailer offering transport for a further three horses and has a separate room for the grooms too.

As riders are keen to get back out with their horses, a horse transport recovery provider has reported a large increase in breakdowns and is calling for owners to make sure they do essential checks before heading out with horses on board. H&H finds out more...

The current situation is a “perfect storm” for horsebox owners, according to one recovery provider, as huge numbers of lorries have been breaking down.

As competition has restarted after the coronavirus lockdown, PRP Rescue Services managing director Jon Phillips told H&H he has seen demand for recovery soar.

“It’s just gone crazy,” he said. “It’s been like we normally see in spring, but with a vengeance; everyone’s been breaking down.”

Mr Phillips said that after the enforced shutdown of activity, people have been keen to get back out, and that some may have done so without carrying out the necessary safety checks on their vehicles.

“They’ve just jumped in the lorry and gone out,” he said. “There have been silly things, like slightly flat tyres, or wiring that’s not wired up any more; all completely unnecessary things a mechanic would have picked up in a look over the vehicle.”

Mr Phillips, who also leads the Organisation of Horsebox and Trailer Owners said he understands that the vehicles’ idleness was unexpected, and then sport was restarted fairly quickly. But he urged owners to check vehicles thoroughly, or get them checked by a professional.

“Remember everything you do before you go out in the spring and please, please, do it again,” he said. “I’m sure readers have got back copies of H&H, or they can go on the website, or our website, for lists of what you need to check, or get your mechanic to.

“Also, remember to check floors and ramps; they’re the call-outs we hate the most.”

Mr Phillips added that some breakdowns may be caused by issues that would have been picked up in an MOT, had these not been extended while garages are closed.

“It’s a perfect storm for the horsebox owner,” he said.

MOTs will be compulsory again as of 1 August, but drivers are also reminded that with or without a test certificate, it is their responsibility to ensure the vehicles they drive are safe and comply with legal standards.

A DVSA spokesman told H&H: “The annual test is a once-a-year check that a vehicle is safe to drive. Drivers and operators still have a responsibility to ensure the vehicle remains safe between tests.”

British Horse Society (BHS) director of safety Alan Hiscox told H&H the BHS advises pre-travel checks to include tyre pressure and condition, on lorries, trailers and towing vehicles, lights and fastenings.

“We would also advise that you take out quality breakdown cover specifically for equine recovery, otherwise a rescue, particularly from a major road, has the potential to be very expensive,” he said.

In the event of a motorway breakdown, horses must stay in the vehicle, while drivers and passengers are advised to wait on the embankment.

“Your safety, as well as that of your horse and other road users, is paramount, so wait for experts and do not attempt any repairs yourself,” Mr Hiscox said. “If your vehicle cannot be safely repaired at the roadside, a decision will be made by the Highways Authority or police as to the best course of action. This could be to close the motorway to unbox and reload your horse on to a rescue vehicle, or they may decide to tow your vehicle.”

Horse & Hound asks experts from the British Horse Society, Organisation of Horsebox and Trailer Owners and the Driver Vehicle Standards Agency for their advice...

Owners are being reminded of the importance of frequent vehicle checks, having equine-specific breakdown cover and being prepared for unexpected delays — as more people prepare for the coming competition season.

Before travelling, the British Horse Society (BHS) recommends owners follow the anagram FLOWERS: fuel, lights, oil, water, electrics, rubber and self — urging them to consider if they are fit to drive the towing vehicle or horsebox.

BHS director of safety Alan Hiscox told H&H it is “vitally” important thorough vehicle checks are carried out before every journey, regardless of how frequently the horsebox, trailer or towing vehicle is used.

“It’s crucial all horsebox and trailer components are fit for purpose, including the main body, floor, ramp, tyres, brakes, lights and trailer hitch. The towing vehicle also needs to be fully checked,” he said. “It’s important trailers are professionally serviced at least once a year, ensuring all areas have been rigorously examined.

“The safety of owner, horse and those in vehicles around them is paramount, and we strongly advise all possible steps are taken to minimise the risk of a breakdown or incident. It’s also recommended owners take out quality breakdown cover specifically for equine recovery otherwise a rescue has the potential to be very expensive.”

Organisation of Horsebox and Trailer Owners managing director Jon Phillips agreed breakdown cover is important and told H&H he recommends owners download the What3Words app, which provides three unique words for every three square metres of land to identify precise locations.

“We use it as a rescue centre, and it means if somebody breaks down on a motorway and is are not sure which junction they are near, it helps breakdown companies locate them faster,” he said.

Mr Philips added owners must ensure they are prepared for a breakdown occurring by carrying sufficient hay and water as well as appropriate rugs.

“People don’t seem to learn — the number of people who ring us and say they have broken down and don’t have anything for their horses doesn’t improve. People need to think about their horses and what they would need if they were stranded.”

Gordon Thomson, head of vehicle testing policy for the Driver Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), told H&H the organisation is often concerned about the condition of horseboxes assessors see at MOT tests.

“The test is carried out once a year, but owners have a responsibility to maintain their vehicles throughout the year and be aware of checks they should do,” he said. “We are urging owners to make horsebox maintenance part of their regular weekly and monthly schedules.”

DVSA vehicle standards assessor Jim Bithell added that “too many” horseboxes are failed for faults that could be spotted and rectified with regular maintenance.

“Many of the defects are classified as dangerous, affecting steering, suspension or braking systems,” he said.

Help! My horse climbs on the tack locker in my horsebox — what should I do?

Q: Rearing in lorry and getting stuck on tack locker: “I have a very bad tempered and argumentative warmblood. This morning we were leaving for a show and I stopped for five minutes halfway down the drive to just run in the house. He could see his two mates in the field and went bananas, striking out, which he often does when he’s angry. He also does it in the stable when he’s left alone. He then reared up and got stuck up on the tack locker. I don’t know whether he meant to get up there or if he just struck out high and then found himself up there. He was literally tap dancing on the ceiling and pommelling the hell out of the wall. I had to get in there and try and bend his legs to get him down — it was all quite terrifying! He was up there for quite some time too. Does anyone have any suggestions on this as really don’t want to play that game again. He did it at a show once when his friend went out of sight. He was on his own in there today. Someone at the show said if it is anger, I should hobble him but if it’s panic don’t as he’ll kill himself? I’m not mad keen on hobbles to be honest. Any ideas would be great.”

A: “Hi,

“It sounds like you have your hands full with your horse! Your description of him being “argumentative and bad tempered” may mean that you have to do plenty of work on his groundwork to establish you as the one in charge and to change his behaviour when being handled. It would be interesting to know what he is like to ride.

“The problem that you have described doesn’t sound like a travelling problem, but more like an attachment issue exacerbated by being on a lorry. Your first port of call should be to address the attachment issue first, as this is the root cause.

“I do a tying up exercise called “standing on the tie”, which would be a really useful thing to do with him. It involves tying your horse safely on the yard (I use a resistance tie system) before moving your horse’s hindquarters over from right to left and back a few times, before asking them to stand and settle at a point of your choosing, through your body language and saying the word “stand” as his cue. Then, walk at a safe distance behind them to see if they stay standing. If they move off the spot, repeat the exercise until they stand without moving. This can take a lot of patience and repetition, but it is an important step in training your horse.

“If you can get him good at this exercise, whenever he gets fractious, you can take his mind of other horses, refocus him and show him where to stand to be comfortable and relaxed, by your body language and the use of the cue word, “stand”. It is also the start of establishing his respect for you; he moves and stands when you ask him to, not when he feels like it. This exercise can be seen on www.yourhorsemanship.com. I would practice this in as many different environments as possible, including when he is tied to a lorry.

“I would also use a bit of reverse psychology for developing his tolerance to being on the horsebox. When he starts kicking up a fuss and wanting to get off, allow him to do so. But as soon as he is off, turn him sharply back round and put him straight back on again. Or, if he is full of energy, lunge him in a few circles before reloading him. When he is back on the lorry, let him relax, give him a rub, and if he stands quietly where you want him to, give him a “treat” (but please make sure that is the only time you do give him any food during this process!). With repetition, he will begin to realise that when he comes off the box he has to work, and when he is on the box, he is left to stand and relax; therefore the box becomes a good place to be.

“As with most areas of horse training, there is no quick, easy fix, so you need to be prepared to put in as much work on the ground as with his ridden work to get him manageable. Lastly, you mentioned hobbles in your letter. Hobbles are used as a restraint, and horses have to be carefully trained to accept them. Growing up in rural Australia, hobbles were still used in certain situations, but you rarely see them in use now in the UK. I would steer well clear of them as I think you could end up with more problems than you started with, and you would not be addressing the root cause of the problem. Mother rescues son, pony and dog from burning horsebox

A mother who rescued her son, his pony and her dog from a burning horsebox on a dual carriageway said she is “thanking her lucky stars” they all got out safely.

Verity Perry was driving her 11-year-old son Austyn and his pony Pepi to a Pony Club rally at Chyverton Park equestrian center yesterday (10 April) when she realised something was wrong.

“I noticed something smelt weird,” she told H&H.

“My lorry’s restricted to 56mph but the car in front was going more slowly than me so I wondered if it was them – then smoke started coming in.”

Verity kept driving as there was nowhere to pull over, while smoke filled the cab.

“I made Austyn get in the back with the dog as it was so smoky in the front, but the scary thing is, I know how fast lorries can go up,” she said.

“I was desperately trying to get to somewhere where I could pull over, then there was a big grass verge. I went on to it at about 15 to 20mph, which in a lorry is terrifying.”

Austyn jumped out of the groom’s door with the dog, Flappers, while Verity ran to the back to let Pepi out, and call 999. Austyn then held pony and dog on the grass while Verity tried to save some of their kit.

“Luckily, it was the best place to break down if you had to do it as I had literally just passed the fire station,” she said. “The first fire engine was there within five minutes.

“What shocked me was that no one stopped to help. They could see thick black smoke pouring out of the lorry, and a boy with a pony and a dog on the side of the road, but no one stopped.”

Verity praised the firefighters and police, who also arrived on the scene.

“I was a bit disappointed in people but the emergency services got there so fast, it almost didn’t matter,” she said. “The dog is a rescue who we haven’t had long; he was terrified but a lovely sergeant looked after him. The police went above and beyond.”

Police closed the road and Verity was able to lead Pepi to a yard nearby, while Austyn rode his bike and a police officer walked the dog.

The lorry was recovered and Verity believes it may be salvageable, as the fire was electrical, and seems only to have caused minor damage.

“I bought it from my best friend, who died in 2012, so I’m so sentimental about it,” she said. “The lorry is the last thing I’ve got of her.

“It was shocking that it happened; everything is done on this lorry. I take it to the garage for anything and must spend £2,000 a year to make sure it’s ok. What’s odd is that it usually goes into limp mode when a sensor failed but it carried on driving beautifully when it was on fire.

“We’re very lucky, in so many ways. I’m so proud of Austyn; he was very brave, and did exactly as he was told, and if there’s any horse in the world you’d want to be the one stuck on a main road with, it would be this one; he’s so good and he was just delighted there was grass!”

Verity has since been overwhelmed by supportive messages and offers to lend trailers and lorries so she and Austyn can continue to travel to events.

Owner’s call for law change after horse’s leg goes through horsebox floor

The owner of a horse whose leg went through a lorry floor inches from a wheel wants metal floors in horseboxes to be mandatory.

Amy Poltinger’s horses were being driven by her partner Adam when her six-year-old Irish draught Daniel’s hind leg went through the floor of her horsebox on 6 March.

Amy told H&H: “I was travelling in another horsebox behind but I was told Adam heard a bang and then a second one. A friend looked through the jockey door and it looked like Daniel had gone down.

“My partner pulled straight over into a car park and a car was flashing and beeping at him. I got a phone call but I had already seen a piece of my lorry lying in the road and pulled in. Daniel’s leg had gone right through the floor and was a few inches away from the wheel.”

Crew from Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene along with vets from Corner House Equine Clinic and Walnut Hill Equine Veterinary Clinic.

“The vets and fire service were there very quickly. The other horses were removed from the box and Daniel was sedated to make sure he didn’t struggle.

“A second specialist unit animal rescue arrived from Bromyard fire station and they made a plan to get him out. The sides and roof of the lorry were cut off and hoisting equipment was used to lift him out. A local farmer came and helped with lifting him out with a tele-handler and Daniel was put on to a board and slid into a trailer.”

Daniel was taken to an equine hospital, but has since returned home.

“It was worrying because we couldn’t fully assess the damage he had done while he was in the box, we had to get him out. It took some time for him to come round at the hospital and he was very wobbly but he escaped with cuts and bruises. He’s home and he’s doing well,” said Amy.

Amy, who had recently had the floor replaced, said it should be mandatory for all horseboxes to have metal floors.

“We’ve always looked after the lorry and had the floor replaced a few months ago. We’ve received some negative comments online about what happened but it doesn’t matter if a lorry is two years old or 20. It’s not just about checking the floor, previous to having the floor replaced we had a sealed rubber floor so apart from looking underneath outside, we wouldn’t have been able to lift the matting and check the floor inside.

“As a safety principle I think it should be mandatory for all lorries to have metal floors, it would take some of the risk factor away. Going forward we will always make sure to have a metal floor and I won’t be putting my horses in anything that doesn’t have one.”

Amy said the fire service and vets were “invaluable”.

“They were amazing. They kept me updated and knew what they were doing and did it the quickest way they could. The fire service followed us to the vets to help get Daniel out of the trailer – everybody went over and beyond to help us.”

Richie Jordan, group commander of Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We are really pleased to hear that Daniel is expected to make a full recovery after his three-hour ordeal.

“It is not yet clear why the floor had failed but we would urge all horse owners to regularly check the floors of their horseboxes, especially underneath rubber matting to check for any unseen damage or weaknesses.”

Carbon monoxide alarm saves pair sleeping in horsebox

A mother and daughter who were woken by a carbon monoxide alarm as they slept in their horsebox have urged other riders to buy them, as “it could save a life”.

Nanette Aitken and her 15-year-old daughter Anneliese, who was on the Team GB Pony Nations Cup squad in 2018, were staying in their lorry while they attended training in Perthshire on 21 January and were woken at 3am by the alarm.

Nanette told H&H: “I’ve carried the carbon monoxide alarm for a few years now after a friend recommended I get one; with Anneliese competing we’re away staying in the lorry a lot.

“The problem is when you’re travelling a lot it’s the sort of thing that can be stood on or it gets knocked and will go off so it can end up being put in a cupboard. I must have been having a tidy-up a few months ago and had put ours in the cupboard under the sink and not known how long it was in there.”

Nanette’s alarm was showing a reading of 76 parts per million (ppm). 50ppm is the safety level as specified by the HSE for a maximum of 30 minutes’ exposure.

“This beep was going off and I got up to see what was going on and found the monitor. Who knows what would have happened if the alarm hadn’t gone off at 3am, with another five hours to sleep – potentially we wouldn’t have woken up,” said Nanette.

“I phoned my husband and he said it must have been the heating, it’s the only thing he thought it could be. The heating exhaust sits out just outside the side of the lorry, and it turns out it had been damaged and we didn’t know, so the fumes must have gone straight back up when I turned the heating on. Our lorry is serviced every year and we have the gas and electrics checked, but this was something you wouldn’t have thought to check.”

Nanette and Anneliese went outside and opened the door and windows to vent the lorry.

“After we aired the lorry the monitor went down gradually, my husband told us to turn the heating off and eventually after a while it cleared down to zero and we closed everything up and left the heating off,” said Nanette.

“I didn’t go back to bed, I kept thinking what if it wasn’t the heating or what if it was something else. You’re not in a frame of mind to bed back down and get snuggled up.”

Nanette had the heating exhaust repaired and moved the carbon monoxide alarm out of the cupboard.

“It won’t be moved again – it will be there as a permanent reminder. For it to have gone off when it was in a cupboard is amazing that it worked and detected it.”

Horsebox technician finds ‘minefield of disasters’ in lorries

Nanette, who wants to raise awareness about having a carbon monoxide alarm, has posted on Facebook about her experience.

“I got a fright and my daughter realises its was quite an event. My daughter said we really need to get people thinking and talking about it. Some people have said they hadn’t thought about it or it’s not something they’d considered – it could save a life,” she said.

“I think its jolted a lot of people and their initial reaction is ‘that’s awful, I’m going to get one’ but then the next day passes and they haven’t done it yet. Don’t forget about it and carry this through – that’s the message we need to get to people, because it’s easy to be alarmed at the time then for it to fizzle to the back of your memory.

“It’s a great investment. They’re not expensive, you can get them from around £10 to £20 – which isn’t a lot for something that might one day be useful to you. When it’s such a small investment for the health benefits I would say it’s an absolute must.”

“We were just north of junction 50 when someone pulled alongside us and was pointing at the wagon,” she said. “I couldn’t see anything, the dashboard looked fine and it felt ok – then I smelt burning rubber.

“I pulled over and checked the tyres, which were fine, then heard this funny noise. I thought the radiator had gone, looked underneath and saw sparks and flames.”

Nikki told her daughter to get out while she took the keys out and grabbed the ponies’ bridles.

“I thought ‘how am I going to hold two ponies on the side of the A1? We’ll have to flag someone down’,” she said. “This man stopped; he was driving a trailer with two in and he saw the little ‘un waving her arms, stopped and came over.

“I said ‘we’re on fire’, and he just grabbed the first pony and I put the bridle on the other one.”

Nikki praised the “amazing” man who came to her rescue; he not only helped get the ponies off, he put the fire out, using an extinguisher Nikki had in the lorry.

“He not only saved us, he saved the wagon,” Nikki said, explaining that the fire originated in the central bearing, and the damage was relatively minor.

“I don’t know if it would have burned itself out but it was getting close to the gas bottles,” she said.

Nikki said she has replayed the incident in her mind, asking whether or not she could have done anything differently. But her lorry was well maintained, and had passed its MoT a week before, and she had fire extinguishers on board.

What she will change is their positioning; one was on a bracket from which she could not free it and the smaller one, which did put the fire out, was in the living near the cooker.

“Have an extinguisher in the cab so you can grab it straight away,” she said. “I don’t think you can have too many.”

As well as having the extinguishers, Nikki pointed out, they need to be checked and serviced, and she is looking into fire safety sticks, which do not have to be held by a fire to extinguish it.

She also urges others to check their dashboards constantly; she always does so for warning lights and engine temperature, as overheating is a major cause of fires, and to have bridles or similar on board.

Nikki also recommends having high-vis on board for humans. in case of accidents.

She has posted about her experience on social media and said she has already had positive feedback.

“A lorry manufacturer said he’d put an extinguisher in the cab of every wagon he sells now, which is really good, and friends have messaged saying they’ve bought them; the message seems to be that people hadn’t thought about it before but they will now.

“We were so lucky in so many ways; the ponies behaved impeccably and they and my daughter are fine and there’s not much damage. We’ve been incredibly lucky.”

Like so many things, it’s horses for courses. Some people flipflop between the two modes of transport throughout their horse-owning life depending on their needs at the time, financial situation and horsepower – others keep both, using whichever suits the day’s predicament.

Kellie Fisher has owned a 7.5t, two 3.5ts and two trailers during her eventing career, changing modes according to “cost, environmental and personal reasons”.

“I started with a 3.5t because I was 18 and it was the only option I could drive legally,” she says. “My next horse had to travel herringbone after losing his footing in a trailer so I bought a 7.5t and it was wonderful having the storage space and I enjoyed sharing lifts with friends.”

Her next 3.5t had living but only had the payload for one horse, which eventually proved limiting, and so she switched to an IW Eventa trailer, which includes herringbone stalls and living accommodation.

Now with a giant breed dog and a toddler, and plenty of experience on exactly what she wants from her horse transport, Kellie is thrilled with her Tristar non-coachbuilt (a cheaper option) lorry.

“I would prefer greater economy and less environmental impact in terms of diesel, but we have chosen to have an electric car instead. I’m hoping electric/biofuel lorries become mainstream soon!”

‘Horses are precious cargo’: owners reminded of the risks of overloading horseboxes

Mr Parker said many horsebox owners will not have come across the issue of payload or vehicle weights before, but that this is one of the top factors in the search for a vehicle, and he “cannot emphasise enough how crucial this point is”.

Carrying excess weight can also mean up to a £300 fine, or a court summons for the worst offences, and it could mean the vehicle insurance will not cover repairs.

“Unlike buying a car, where weight is never mentioned, payload is an integral aspect of horsebox ownership,” Mr Parker said. “For many customers, staying safe and legal means learning a whole new subject.”

“I’ve known of people who advertise boxes with a weight certificate, but they’ve had it weighed without the partitions or back doors, so it’s got a really good payload,” he said. “But then the customer drives away thinking they’re sorted, and that’s not the case.”

Mr Parker advised taking any potential purchase to a weighbridge to determine payload before buying, then loading it and weighing again, bearing in mind an average horse could weigh 600kg, a person possibly 80kg, and fuel and water 1kg per litre.

Another aspect to consider is loading. Each axle can carry a legal maximum weight, say 3.6 for the front and 5tonne for the rear. A fully loaded 7.5tonne could be legal, but removing one horse from the back could mean too much weight on the front axle.

“She was lucky enough to get a warning and made to reload the large horse into a middle stall. I often use this as an explanation of horsebox payloads and positioning for customers, and it highlights perfectly how easy it is to fall foul of the law.”

Mark Pickup, CEO of Lion Equestrian Insurance, told H&H that if a lorry is overloaded and involved in an accident, it is likely the insurer will not cover the costs of repair to the vehicle.

A DVSA spokesperson referred H&H to information on maximum weights and sanctions, adding: “The DVSA’s priority is to protect everyone from unsafe drivers and vehicles.

“Horses are precious cargo, so it’s hugely important that horsebox owners know the weights of their vehicle/trailer as well as the load, to ensure that they are not exceeded. The vehicle or trailer also needs to be properly maintained all year, not just for its annual MOT.”

Drivers must also have the correct licence and operator licence if required, and ensure vehicles are safe to be on the road, with walkaround checks before departure and maintenance.

A Department for Transport (DfT) spokesman told H&H the department has been “engaging closely with [the] industry to increase awareness about these new rules, phasing implementation to ensure they can bed in smoothly”.

“It is confusing as there are so many different rules,” he said, adding that there needs to be more education among the equestrian community when it comes to driver rules.
