How to choose the best short riding boots for you

There’s more to think about than you might realise when it comes to choosing a pair of short riding boots. The first difference you might notice is the leather – nubuck leather is hard-wearing, easy to look after and clean, while full-grain leather is more formal and traditional. The sole is an important consideration and the tread should be shallow and compact, which helps to prevent your foot becoming caught. Rubber soles are more flexible and shock absorbing, while wooden or wood composite soles can offer more support. Some boots also have steel shanks to provide arch support, which encourages good posture and reduces fatigue.

Insoles have a real effect on how your boot feels to wear. Leather insoles are hard wearing but have minimal cushioning, whereas cushioned insoles offer varying levels of padding and shock absorption depending on the material. These boots are a bit of a staple among those in the know. I remember the first time I saw someone wearing a pair at a competition – they looked so smart, I added them straight to my wish list. When I finally got my hands on a pair, they didn’t disappoint.

Straight out of the box, they felt incredibly comfortable – no pinching, no stiffness, no breaking-in period. The soft calfskin leather gives them a smart, polished look, and they moulded to my feet surprisingly quickly.

What stood out to me was the insole design. It has a kind of memory foam feel, combined with built-in arch support and a cushioned heel that absorbs impact really well. The front zip style I tried looked neat and classic, and they look better with age. They’re suitable for any discipline when paired with the Tredstep Medici Air Half Chaps.

If you’re after a pair of everyday long boots that won’t break the bank, I’d recommend these boots. I got them when I needed something more flexible than my usual dressage boots – and honestly, they felt like slippers from day one. The leather is super soft, there was no breaking-in, no rubbing, no blisters. Just easy comfort, straight out of the box.

Six months on, I’m still using them regularly. They’ve seen everything from hacking to mucking out, and they’re holding up far better than I expected for the price – the zip, soles, and leather are still going strong. The fit was another win: I’ve got long legs and slim calves, and they still felt snug but not restrictive. If you’re on the shorter side or need a wider calf, they’ve got loads of size options and the stretch panel at the back helps them mould to your leg.

In the saddle, they feel more like short boots and chaps – soft, grippy, and they move really nicely with your leg. If you hate the feeling of stiff boots behind your knees, you’ll probably love these. I still reach for my stiffer boots for competitions, but for everything else, these have become my go-to.

At first glance, you might wonder if these boots have ended up in the wrong guide – they look like walking boots. Can you really ride in them? But trust me, if you want a boot that does it all – mucking out, walking the dog, long hacks, even the odd schooling session – the Ariat Telluride H2O is one I’d recommend without hesitation. I’ve worn mine through wet, muddy winters and hot summer days, and they’ve taken everything in stride.

They’re made from tough, full-grain leather with a built-in waterproof membrane, so your feet stay dry even when the yard turns into a swamp. The sole has great grip (I’ve never slipped), but they’re not clunky – I ride in mine regularly and they fit comfortably in the stirrups. The heel is defined enough for safety, and they feel secure and stable underfoot.

What stands out, though, is the comfort. The cushioned, shock-absorbing footbed and moisture-wicking lining mean they stay breathable and light, even after hours on your feet. They’re also refreshingly low-maintenance – I just brush off the mud and they’re ready for more.

What are the best horse riding boots for men?

There is no one type or style of riding boot that is better than another – it depends on how you intend to use them and what discipline you do. When choosing a pair of riding boots, consider your specific needs, riding style and personal preference.

Dressage riders tend to prefer tall, stiffer boots, whereas showjumpers or event riders generally prefer boots with more ankle flexibility. Just when you thought LeMieux, the equestrian brand best known for its matchy-matchy sets, couldn’t possibly add anything else to their massive collection – you were mistaken.

This morning (27 June) LeMieux launched its first-ever leather riding boots. Developed over two years, these new boots are designed for all-day comfort. LeMieux said the boots blend “timeless equestrian elegance with cutting-edge comfort and performance”. This addition expands LeMieux’s existing footwear range.

The first item in the new range is the LeMieux field riding boot. These premium leather riding boots are designed for all disciplines and levels of riding at home or in competition. They are leather-lined, have an elegant silhouette and an all-weather grip that provides added support in the saddle. They also feature elastic calf gussets, a YKK zip and an ergonomic footbed.

Sarah Gibson, head of product design at LeMieux, explained that the brand has drawn design inspiration from riders.

“Every detail – from the contoured ergonomic footbed to the seamless elasticated front ankle lacing – has been crafted to support riders, at every level, through every stride,” said Sarah.

I had an exclusive preview of these boots earlier this year, and can confirm they are incredibly stylish. They incorporate advanced technology for foot comfort, and the design team has prioritised support and ease of wear. The boots have a soft construction that allows them to fit snugly and flex with the rider from day one.

The LeMieux field riding boots are currently available in black, in sizes UK 4–9, with a slim, regular or full calf. They will be released in brown next summer.

Hy Equestrian Sorrento Field Riding Boots

Hy Equestrian describe these Sorrento long boots as “perfect for the competitive or everyday rider”. And they’re not wrong, but they’re also ideal for someone coming back to riding after a long break – me – and for those who have never ridden in a long boot and don’t want to spend a substantial amount of money on a pair of leather boots.

These boots are perfect for road-testing the feel of the best long leather riding boots without splashing the cash. This is because they feature a leather foot and inner calf with a synthetic leather outer that gives a great, tailored fit. I must admit I’d never had a pair of “mainly synthetic” boots before, but the super-softness of the upper eliminates all those hours of breaking in a pair of all-leather boots and gives a really close-contact feel, which really surprised me. I was very impressed.

Sizing

Because I knew that these field boots had more of a pointed toe than I’d been used to in the past – and that the width of the foot was narrower than my last pair of long boots – I opted for a size larger than I normally take. And I was glad that I did because that one size larger made all the difference in terms of a comfortable fit.

First impressions

My first impression of the boots was how smart they looked with their distinct, classic, field-boot laced fronts, and a breathable lining added to the comfort factor and would be great for extra warmth in winter. But how easy would they be to get on? I’d always struggled with the rear zip on the leather chaps I used to wear with my jodhpur boots, but with these I had no need to worry. The zip is robust and doesn’t feel as if it will let you down. And although a little “clunky” at first, all that was required was a hefty tug and a couple of “slides” up and down to get the zip running smoothly. It fastened easily at the top, thanks to the press-button stud. There’s also a useful elasticated back panel that provides a bit of “give” to help bring the edges of the zip together and each boot came with a detachable shoelace-type zip pull to facilitate easier zipping up.

Comfort

As far as hacking and schooling were concerned, they felt extremely comfortable from the get-go. The only thing I was slightly concerned about, given the fact that I’d plumped for a larger size for my wide feet, was if the ball of my foot would sit correctly in the stirrup – as the pointed-toe design of the boots can make them look quite long. But happily, there were no issues there.

The heel of the boots incorporates two rubber spur rests and there’s a push-button spur guard at the bottom of the boot to protect any scuff marks from spurs. And the soles are anti-skid, making them a great choice for competing or schooling, as the last thing you want is any slip-sliding when going over a jump. To put them to the test, I actually braved it over a small jump, the soles’ “grip-ability” passing with flying colours.

Care

What I really love about the boots is how easy-care they are. Obviously the leather foot needs more looking after with a coat of polish and maybe some waterproofing, but the synthetic uppers only need a quick wipe down to keep them clean. They come in sizes EU37–41 (UK 3–7), so are more of a ladies’ boot, in calf sizes 34.5–37cm and height sizes 43.5–46cm.

It’s worth mentioning here that the height sizes are quite generous – I’m 5ft 6in and consider myself to be of average size, but I found that the back of the upper was quite high at the back of my knee. Likewise, the front, which “crinkled” a bit. If, however, these had been all-leather boots, that digging in and crinkling would have been uncomfortable and taken a lot of wearing in, but after a few times riding in them and lots of walking around the yard in them, they soon began to feel more “broken in” and the crinkling became less of a problem.

Verdict

These boots are great value for money and the perfect starter long boot for riders who’ve never ridden in long boots. I loved that they felt light, close-contact and almost an extension of my leg. And I particularly liked the fact that I wasn’t going to be spending hours polishing and shining leather uppers until they gleamed! Cleaning was hassle-free, quick and left more time for the all-important riding!

They are one of the biggest investments in a rider’s wardrobe, so it’s vital that you know how to clean riding boots to ensure they not only look smart, but last well too. Whether you have short riding boots or long ones, keeping them clean and supple is as important as proper care of your horse’s tack.

The gleaming riding boots the cavalry wear on parade are so shiny they look patent, but it takes the soldiers four hours. Thankfully, to keep your everyday riding boots in good condition should only take 15 minutes.

How to clean riding boots: step-by-step

Before getting going, gather together everything you need to clean your riding boots: a damp cloth and a couple of dry ones, and a soft-bristled brush (as you would use to polish shoes). To keep the leather in optimal condition, only use products designed for leather. Put together a boot-cleaning kit consisting of a leather cleaner, a leather conditioner and a leather polish. A useful extra is a waterproofing spray for additional protection against the elements. Resist the temptation to use household cleaners even when the boots are caked in mud and grease.

First, remove all the mud, dirt, grease and dust with the damp cloth. Use the brush to clean the zips on long riding boots or elastic parts of the short boots, and remove caked-on dirt from any stitching. For stronger action on more stubborn dirt, apply the leather cleaner.

Don’t forget the soles – you can usually remove the mud with a stiffer brush, then wipe with the damp cloth.

It’s important to clean dirt regularly from the boots because it can dry out the boot making them increasingly prone to the leather cracking or for the stitching to rot.

Now for the polish. Apply the cream or polish to clean, dry leather with a soft dry rag, avoiding the zips or elasticated parts. Give the leather a few minutes to absorb the cream. Then it’s time for the elbow grease to make the boots shine. Use another rag or a soft brush to buff the boots until they gleam.

If the zips are getting sticky, make sure you brush out any mud, dirt and debris. You can use the old housewives’ trick of rubbing a candle up and down the zip to improve its function, or use a specifically designed lubricant, such as Zipper-Ease.

Finally, always store your riding boots in boot trees to ensure they keep their shape. You can get short boot trees or long ones to suit. These prevent wrinkles in the boot, and also help the boot to dry out. Boot bags are great way to store boots, and they keep them safe from damage while travelling, too.

Finding the best riding boots for wide calves can be tricky – especially if you’re also looking for long riding boots that are either smaller in the foot or not of regular length. Of course, short boots and half chaps or gaiters are an option in many cases – half chaps often have a larger range of wider fits, which are not limited by the size of your foot – but sometimes a pair of well-fitting long riding boots are exactly what you want.

Ill-fitting riding boots can have an effect on your safety, comfort and enjoyment while riding. It’s important to really consider what you need from a new pair of boots before you buy them.

How to choose riding boots for wider calves

Most close-fitting tall riding boots will have a full-length zip at the rear, which makes them easier to get on and off, but also ensure a snug fit. Some boots will have elasticated panelling to help improve the fit – some styles do this in a smarter way, so this may be something you want to consider. You’ll also be able to choose between field boots (with laces) and dress boots (without) – this is usually a matter of preference, but dress boots tend to be favoured by dressage riders.

Always check the size guides when choosing between different pairs of boots – each brand will have slightly different measures for regular, wide and extra-wide, and while your size might not be catered for by one, it may be by another. It’s also important to know that boots should feel tight when you first buy them as they’ll soften and drop with wear – it’s not unusual to need help from a friend or shop assistant to get you into a new pair.

The combination of half chaps or gaiters with short boots typically provides more flexibility to the rider in the ankle area and negates the need to ‘break in’ long riding boots.

Many brands produce matching sets of half chaps or gaiters and short boots, although some riders prefer to mix and match brands to suit their requirements and find the perfect fit. Half chaps are often made of leather or synthetic leather, but they can also be made of suede or suede-like materials – and you’ll find them all within this guide to help you choose.

What’s the difference between half chaps and gaiters?

Half chaps are zipped at the side, fastening downwards from the knee, which makes them easy to put on and take off. Gaiters, however, tend to have a hidden zip at the back and zip upwards – this gives a smarter look, more like a traditional long boot.

What’s the difference between half chaps and full chaps?

Half chaps are more common – they are worn with short boots, covering the lower half of your leg, protecting it and giving the illusion that you’re wearing long boots. Full chaps cover the whole leg, similar to riding trousers, and have zips down the outside of each leg so you can get them on and off easily. Unlike riding trousers, however, they stop at the top of your leg at the back, leaving your seat uncovered for a better contact with the saddle.

Every rider will remember getting their first pair of long riding boots and the feeling of putting them on for the first time. The boots of top riders are so often admired and tradestands selling new designs are always busy at events.

It’s not uncommon for riders who fall from their horse to plead and protest when the emergency services suggest cutting off their precious boots, despite being in a great deal of pain – and not just because they took a long time to save up for. But have things always been this way?

Rachel Beckham heads up product development at Dublin and has been with the business at WeatherBeeta for more than 20 years. In this time she has witnessed a real shift in both consumer behaviour and product design.

“Looking back to the 1980s and early ’90s, equestrian footwear was very basic,” Rachel explains. “The majority of riders wore pull-on leather-soled jodhpur boots, while slush-moulded boots – the long rubber riding boots – were also very common. In addition to these, most riders had a pair of wellies for the yard and whenever you needed waterproof boots, although riding in wellies wasn’t uncommon either.”

The more serious riders would also have owned a pair of tall leather boots, but “these were kept for best and certainly not worn every day,” Rachel adds. “Options were limited and only a few styles were available. Boots were almost all exclusively bought off the peg – there was usually only one calf width and if your legs were narrower or wider than the standard you would have to make it work. Nowadays, custom made-to-measure boots are so much more common.”

A major innovation, which came in the early-mid 1990s, was the introduction of zips into both long boots and jodhpur boots.

“Zips made a big difference to those with higher insteps, who struggled to put boots on easily, but it also enabled a more custom fit from tall boots,” says Rachel. “Adding a zip and an elasticated panel immediately gives a boot a much snugger fit. Zips were quite an innovation of their time, but something we really take for granted these days.”

Affordability of tall boots

Ariat’s assistant product manager for footwear, Lissy Beesley, notes that they have seen sales of tall boots increase in particular over the years.

“Consumers are able to access higher-quality styles at more affordable prices,” she says. “Now that tall boots are commonly worn as everyday boots, some riders own multiple pairs, rather than keep them back for special events and competition.”

Brands are always looking for ways to improve the comfort and fit of their riding boots, and the area of boot design that has seen the biggest evolution is comfort.

“A lot of the improvements and technologies that improve comfort can be harder to see – unless you were to look at boots from this year and 1990 side by side – but there has been a lot of investment in this area,” Rachel reveals.

“All the top brands will have their own comfort system within the boot, and the sole will be made of multiple layers, including a steel shank for stability and support. Within the heel, there is usually some sort of rebound structure for cushioning and shock absorption, and common materials include TPU [thermoplastic polyurethane] and TPR [thermoplastic rubber] rather than leather, wood or cork. These materials make all the difference when you dismount in the cold and offer much greater traction and grip.”

Not only do riding boots provide improved comfort and fit, but some winter-focused designs offer warmth and waterproofness, which has made them more suitable for wearing out of the saddle, too.

“More emphasis has also been placed on breathability – as no one wants sweaty feet,” adds Rachel. “Some boots have Gore-Tex lining, while others have waterproof and breathable membranes – these fabrics and materials are really technical and you’d notice if they were taken away.”

Long riding boots tailored to your sport

While most dress and field boots available will serve you well for a wide range of disciplines, as you climb the levels you’re more likely to want something specific. Dressage boots tend to be stiffer and straighter as they emphasise a tall, elongated figure and keep your leg still while still allowing good feel. Meanwhile boots designed for showjumpers are usually made of a close contact, soft leather and have a more contoured fit.

Along with the functionality of the cut and design, the demand and supply of aesthetic options has exploded.

Kirstie Jones has worked at Joshua Jones, the UK distributor of Italian brands DeNiro and Donadeo, for more than six years.

“You’ll have noticed the days of choosing between black and brown are over,” she says. “You can now find boots in almost any colour, with a choice of trims, while crystals and croc prints are proving to be extremely popular. This allows riders to create a truly personalised boot to finish their competition outfit.

“Showjumpers are typically all about colour co-ordination and showjumping rules allow riders to design a dream boot,” Kirstie elaborates. “It’s possible to choose between many different colours of leather, patterned top sections, types of stitching and the option for additional crystals. You can also get matching spur straps to complete the look.

“On the other hand, dressage riders tend to favour a more elegant look. Dressage boots are also available in a huge choice of colours, with the brushed, highly buffed leather being very popular.”

Many event riders will wear the same boots for all three disciplines, but the higher up the levels you look the more likely riders are to have a selection of boots they prefer to wear in each phase.

Showing remains a traditional discipline.

“The rear zip has improved fit and look, while the traditional garter strap, which was designed to keep breeches in place, is now included purely for aesthetic purpose to uphold tradition. While all the new designs are beautiful, there is something wonderful about keeping old traditions alive,” Kirstie adds.

Boots for the rider as an athlete

Rachel believes one of the drivers for all these changes is equestrianism becoming more sport focused – these days if you’re an elite rider you’re an athlete. Boots, along with the rest of your kit, have become more of a performance-enhancing product, rather than just something you wear.

“Some newer boots are particularly lightweight, which will be of benefit on the cross-country course. Higher quality leathers can provide better grip and feel, while comfort systems make them more comfortable for wearing all day,” she adds. “It all contributes to enhancing your performance as a rider.”

When it comes to choosing a new pair of boots, there are a few different things you should consider. For Rachel, once you’ve made sure your boots comply with competition rules, it’s all about comfort.

“You could be wearing these boots for a very long time, both in the hours that you’ll wear them at a time and for the years they’ll last – you’ve got to be comfortable,” she insists. “There is no point wearing the same boots as your equestrian idol if they rub your feet raw.

“Bear in mind that leather is a natural product and it will give, too – the boots will stretch and become looser over time, so you want them to be on the tighter side to begin with. Then once you’ve got them, make sure you look after them,” Rachel advises. “It’s easy to forget that leather is skin – moisturise it like you would your own skin.”

Lissy says the right boot is one that works effectively for your end use. Consider your budget, fit, comfort, styling and level of competition.

“And most importantly, do they make you smile?”

Having a proper pair of children’s riding boots is important because the soles of wellington boots, casual ankle boots and trainers aren’t appropriate for stirrups – usually because they have too much grip or don’t have a suitable heel – plus riding boots offer more protection from stray pony hooves while your child is on the ground.

When it comes to choosing between long or short boots, young riders and beginners tend to ride in jodhpur boots, while more accomplished riders tend to prefer long boots. If your child is likely to be wearing their new boots for yard chores or in muddy fields in the winter, it might be worth considering some long rubber riding boots so they stay dry and don’t ruin a smart pair of leather boots.

Aside from rubber riding boots, most boots are usually made of genuine or synthetic leather. Real leather tends to offer more grip and feel, and lasts a long time if it’s looked after. On the other hand, synthetic leather is usually cheaper and can be wiped clean without needed to add any leather cleaner or conditioner. Are tall or short boots better for horse riding?

Your choice of tall or short riding boots for your child will depend upon a number of factors.

Firstly, the popular option for beginner riders is a short boot. They are comfortable, take less wearing in and are not as much of an investment should your child decide riding isn’t for them. More experienced children who ride regularly – or perhaps loan or own their own pony – are a more obvious candidate for long boots.

Next, consider your budget. Short boots have a lower price point in general than long boots, and looking for a leather alternative boot could save you even more. Children grow rapidly, so it’s likely you’ll need to replace your son or daughter’s boots a few times if they are a committed rider over several years.

Additionally, factor in how much time you’re willing to put in caring for a pair of boots. Riding boots require frequent cleaning and conditioning to maintain their integrity. This is especially true of leather boots. Therefore, short boots are easier to care for than long.

Plus, long boots are more protective and can help mitigate rubbing and chafing from the saddle or stirrup leather. You can always buy a pair of the best half chaps to partner with your child’s short boots to address this, too.

Finally, if your child wants to compete, consider the requirements of their chosen discipline. In the show ring, young riders are expected to wear short boots with jodhpur clip. However, if your child is interested in dressage or showjumping, they might be keen to wear tall boots. If you son or daughter wants to try a bit of everything, short boots paired with chaps or gaiters could be a great compromise for all disciplines.

Bareback Footwear Kentucky boots

As someone who is fairly traditional in my choice of footwear and has always tended towards wearing very simple plain jodhpur boots in the past, I did wonder whether the Kentucky Jodhpur Riding Boots from Bareback Footwear were going to suit me. With slim legs and small narrow feet, chunkier boots can leave my feet swimming around inside and have a tendency to make me resemble a golf club (!) when viewed from the side, however I was pleasantly surprised to see that this wasn’t the case here.

I really like that the laces allow you to adjust the fit of the boots, which is ideal whether you have slim ankles like me or have been born with “a bit of bone”, while the clever zip and press stud on the side, make them quick and easy to take on and off once you’ve got the laces how you want them.

Having had the top of my left foot “remodelled” by my horse around six months ago, I did initially find the left boot a little tight to slip on initially, but within two or three wears, the leather had softened enough that both boots now slip on and off easily. I was advised that if I found them a little tight to start with, the inner sole could be removed until the leather softened up – while that hasn’t been necessary, it was useful to know.

I have found the boots are extremely comfortable to wear around the stable yard and while long-lining my horse and working him in-hand. My feet do not become sweaty in them and the tread gives a good level of grip across a variety of surfaces. While the pair I am testing are not the “waterproof” option (Kentucky Storm boots), I have not experienced damp feet after wearing the boots while walking through long wet grass to and from my horse’s turnout paddock, which was an issue in my previous pair of short boots.

While I do the vast majority of my riding in long leather riding boots, I wore my Kentucky Jodhpur Boots with a pair of half chaps during a two-day riding holiday in Wales and they were great. They were comfortably both in the saddle, and when we had to dismount and lead our horses while negotiating particularly slippery downhill sections, so I thoroughly recommend them as great all-rounders for use both in the saddle and as yard boots. I also worn them for a week’s riding holiday in Turkey during which we spent a considerable time on the trail leading our horses up and down rocky tracks – these boots were ideal for this challenging terrain.

I chose the Havana colour – these boots are also available in brown and navy – and I think they look really stylish.

Verdict

H&H Approved: I’m a huge fan of these boots – comfortable, stylish and up to the job. I would definitely recommend them to others.

Ariat has released a selection of new additions to the Palisade riding boot collection. Developed over the past three years for the European market, these riding boots are said to contain a host of advanced technology and Ariat describes the design as its “sleekest yet”.

However well you look after your kit, there will come a time when you need to look into riding boot repairs. Our boots put up with all the elements – wind, rain, mud, sun, cold and heat, as well as horse manure and sweat – so it’s no wonder that eventually they need a bit of TLC. Leather riding boots are a major investment, expensive to replace, but a well-fitting, quality pair should last for decades if properly looked-after. The good news is that many parts of a well-made boot can be fixed, so there’s no need to chuck a leather boot out for a broken zip or dodgy heel.

One alteration to consider to preserve the soles of your boots is add protective thin rubber soles to your existing ones, especially if you wear your boots in the stable a lot as manure and urine will degrade the leather fast. This protects the stitching and prolongs the life of the original sole, and is around a third of the cost to replace. Rubber soles are fitted to the metropolitan mounted police boots for health & safety reasons.

Saddlers 4 You director Pippa Terry says that “if a boot is kept well, looked after and treated every now and again to a good leather feed or protector, they can be repaired time and again”. However, they would advise a boot as beyond repair “once the uppers begin to split or break down, depending on the manufacture of the boot”.

“Genuine leather boots are always going to wear better than coated leather boots, and repairs to the uppers are more achievable with real leather,” she says. “Boots with a Goodyear welted construction [a traditional, advanced form of fixing the upper to the sole with two stitches] will enable the user to have them resoled time after time.”

Where do I get my riding boots repaired?

Find a local cobbler who specialises in riding boots. Some cobblers even offer postal repair, saving you a trip (providing you know you are happy with the level of workmanship). They should be able to offer the following services: replacing soles or heels; replacing or altering tops; rewelting around soles; fitting or replacing zips, poppers and rivets; fixing chaps; inserting panels and stretching the boot. After that, your boot will look and feel almost as good as new.

Remember to clean your boots thoroughly before you take or send them to the cobbler, or they are likely to be returned – unrepaired – to you at your cost.

How much do riding boot repairs cost?

Riding boots can be repaired at a fraction of the cost of a new pair of boots. The greater the work, the higher the cost. For instance, a replacement zip might cost under £50, while fitting a new zip to an existing boot will set you back £80 – but this may make the difference between discarding the boot which you cannot force on your leg and enjoying it anew. Full replacement soles (rubber or leather) should cost in the region of £90, while a thin rubber protective over-sole in the region of £2o.

The smaller fixes and alterations may cost as little as £30 for an ankle boot zip replacement, or stretching the boot (instep or calf) from around £15.

Consult a few cobblers to find competitive prices and judge the quality of their workmanship for yourself.

Jacket repairs

Your boots now look the part, but it might now show up the slightly shabby jacket, which could do with a trip to the mender as well. Depending on where the jacket has ripped or needs patching, you may be able to send it to your local dry cleaners or seamstress for a quick fix. However, a specialist hunt tailor will give you peace of mind and is more likely to have the specialist cloth or wool to match your jacket. You may also need special buttons.

Calcutts in Winchester, Hants, not only offer comprehensive repair services for leather boots, they are also a good port of call for hunting coats. The popular saddlers and riding outfitters provides “a complete repair service on hunting coats, and boots and all leatherwork, as well as providing they supply of all the hunt buttons and specific collars, which we also put on”.

If you had your jacket made or bought from a specialist hunting tailor, go back to them for the most appropriate advice, as they will have the right cloths to match.

In this current era of escalating prices, it’s a case of make do and mend, so you don’t have to splash out again for those much-loved, high-cost items which, with a small investment, can be made to look as good as new.

Just Chaps Saltos leather half chaps

These Just Chaps Saltos half chaps are beautiful and made of lovely supple leather – they are the best leather chaps I’ve tried.

They’re smart enough to compete in and fit beautifully; Just Chaps said they had to be tight at first wear and they were, but have given a bit since to be the perfect fit. They do up top to bottom, with a sturdy zip, and a popper at top and bottom to keep them secure. There is a panel on the leg with more give in it, for a better fit, and a similar vent-shaped panel at the front of the foot, which I think contributes to the fact you can do your spurs up over the top of the chaps with no wrinkling or folding of the chaps’ fabric.

They’re very comfortable, so you forget you’re wearing them when you’re riding, and there’s no pinching or wrinkling of the material once you’re on board.

There are lots of sizes available and they fit as expected; my calves measure 35cm at the widest part (and 42cm from floor to knee) and the small is perfect.

At £55 for quality leather chaps, these are very good value. I tested them with the Harry Hall Harrow jodhpur boots and they were a perfect match.

Verdict

These are beautiful chaps and I’d definitely recommend them.

Harry Hall Harrow zip jodhpur boots

The Harry Hall Harrow zip jodhpur boots are beautiful short boots. They’re traditionally smart, with a brass zip and lovely stitching detail on the toes, but modern in terms of comfort.

They’re smart enough to compete in, or for non-horsey activities, and although they are a bit stiff to start, they don’t need too much breaking in, and were comfortable to ride in from the start.

They do up at the front, with a sturdy-looking zip and a padded tongue that makes them feel luxurious and they fit as expected. My one personal con on these boots is that they don’t come in half-sizes. My feet are usually a 6½ and Harry Hall advised to go for the 7, which felt a bit roomy but not too big, so I’d recommend going for your usual size, or the one above if you’re between sizes.

The boots retail at £89.95, which isn’t cheap but seems good value if they last as expected. Update, March 2023: No real signs of wear or damage after a full winter of riding in them most days.

I tested these with the Just Chaps Saltos half chaps, and together they were perfect to ride in.

Verdict

Lovely boots and I’d definitely recommend them.

Ariat Palisade Tall riding boot

I was really impressed with the look and feel of the Ariat Palisade long riding boots when I opened the box. I’m not a fan of big logos or obvious branding, so I was worried that the white ‘Ariat’ on the top of the boot would put me off but I actually found it smart and discreet. The leather felt lovely and supple, with sturdy fastenings and a clever spur guard design which compared to other boots without any spur support is a really great feature.

The boots arrived loose in the box with boot trees in. The trees are a little tricky to use with no handle and so are a bit of a fiddle to get in and out but a nice addition to ensure the boots stay upright when storing. I’ve had Ariat boots before and struggled with the fit, so I was intrigued to see how this model would be. I followed the Ariat sizing guide online to get the most accurate measurements I could.

My first thought when I put them on was how comfy the soles were. The “4LR technology for support and cushioning” and “Duratread outsole with rider tested traction zones” were definitely an evident feature of the boots from the moment I took a step. They felt super-supportive on the foot and comfy to walk in. The zips went up smoothly with the boot slide, a nice feature to stop the zipper rubbing your heel as you do them up. The zip keeper at the top is also a bit fiddly to get the zip into but once secured holds it neatly in place and doesn’t move.

However, despite being the perfect fit on the foot and the the perfect height, they felt quite gappy around parts of the leg. This was my only bugbear with the boots – the leg fit from an aesthetic view. I found them too loose around the ankle, a good fit on the calf, but again too loose at the top just below the knee. I prefer a tailored boot that fits snugly around the ankle so this put me off using them for competitions.

I found that for the first few rides they dug into the top of my foot and the back of my ankle where the leather was already folding but still quite stiff. However, they have now softened up beautifully and are a really lovely, comfy fit for jumping, flatwork and hacking as well as yard chores.

I was worried that as the boots softened they would get increasingly baggy around the ankle, but the loose initial fit hasn’t become any more obvious and they are still a perfect height for me. I would recommend these boots to anyone looking for a smart, comfy and stylish boot that suits both home and competition riding, but I would suggest trying them on before you buy if you can to make sure the leg width is correct for that perfect fit.

The RRP is £290, which I think is definitely a fair price for the quality, look and durability.

Verdict

Horse & Hound Approved – While my initial concerns about the aesthetic fit of these boots are still evident, for home riding I am really happy with them and would definitely choose them over any other boots for all-day comfort and ease of use. My favourite feature is the spur rest on the leather zip guard – it supports the spur in the perfect place and prevents any pressure on the heel from having to have them too tight.

Ariat Ascent half chaps

I tested these Ariat Ascent half chaps with the matching paddock boots. Like the boots, the half chaps are unusual, in that they’re “knitted” and made of a soft fabric that helps with the fit. They’ve got a reinforced panel on the inside of the calf and are very comfortable and light, so you hardly know you’ve got them on when you’re riding, but they provide all the support you want from a pair of chaps.

In fit, I’ve always found Ariat long boots to come up on the small size in width and these chaps are the same. I’m as XS/UK8 in leggings but using the size guide I chose these in the medium and they fitted perfectly. I’d measured my calves as 35cm at the widest point, and 42cm from floor to knee. They were almost uncomfortably tight when I first tried them on but Ariat said that’s how they should be, and they seem to have given slightly after a couple of rides.

Worn with the Ascent paddock boots, these would be smart enough to wear for competing. The only downside I can see to the knitted fabric is that they might be harder to keep clean. The chaps also do up from the bottom, which means they’re awkward to get done up, especially as they have to be tight, until you get the hang of it, but the zips seem chunky and sturdy.

After full use for many months, I can confirm these are great chaps. They are of course muddy, having been ridden in all winter, but they still look smart, the fit hasn’t changed and there are no signs of wear anywhere. I would have these again but can’t see them needing to be replaced any time soon.

Verdict

Slightly unusual looking but very comfortable, durable and practical chaps.

Ariat Ascent H2O waterproof paddock boots

I’ll start by saying these Ariat Ascent paddock boots are possibly the best short boots I’ve had. They are unusual in appearance; something between jodhpur boots, trainers and muckers, and not traditionally smart boots. But this may be why they work so well.

They’re made of “mixed materials” rather than leather, which I’d hope will mean they’re not as prone to splitting as some traditional jodhpur boots, and means they can be hosed off when they get dirty. They have a close-fitting neoprene-like material at the ankle, which not only helps with how comfortable the boots are from the first wear; it feels like you’re wearing slippers when you’ve got them on, but also gives them the huge positive that you can muck out in them, including shaking up new bedding, without a single piece of straw ending up inside your boots. That would make them worth buying on their own, in my opinion.

They’re true to size; Ariat helpfully makes half sizes and my feet are between a six and a seven, and the 6½ fitted perfectly. The material they’re made of also means they’re waterproof, and coped perfectly walking across waterlogged fields. These waterproof ones are £10 more than the non-waterproof version but I think the extra is worth it for general yard boots. Ariat also makes Ascent long boots, which I’d be very keen to try given how well these work.

The boots are pricey, and more than I’d usually pay for short boots, but they seem to be worth the money They were used all last summer for riding and yard work every day and the only sign of wear is a slight hole in the top layer of the top of one boot, but as it’s the fabric bit on the top, it doesn’t affect their waterproof-ness or performance. They’re so comfortable, it’s almost like wearing slippers all day. I tested them with the Ariat Ascent half chaps – I thought they fitted well together and would be smart enough for competing.

Verdict

Pricey boots but very comfortable, durable and practical.

Brogini Trieste laced paddock boots

The Brogini Trieste boots are very, very traditionally smart short boots. They would be suitable for competing in (Brogini also makes leather gaiters) as well as wearing for non-horsey occasions, with the lacing on the front adding to the style. I didn’t have a pair of half chaps or gaiters in a matching colour to test them with, so I tested them with the Brogini Vicenza leather gaiters.

I like the fact they zip up at the back, so there’s no temptation to leave them gaping, as I’ve found before with front-zip boots, and there’s a tab with a popper to make them look tidy. The moulded soles look smart and are very comfortable.

They fit as expected; Brogini does half-sizes, which is handy as my usual 6½ fitted perfectly. They are comfortable and sturdy to ride in, and have spur rests if you need them, which actually I think also adds to the look as they’re where the logo also sits.

I found that they do take some breaking in; they were a bit stiff to start with, although that did not last long, and then felt a bit pinchy for a couple of days, on the top of the foot in one boot and near the toes in the other. Leather boots can take a while to feel comfortable so don’t plan a long dog-walk in them on the first day you’ve had them.

These are not cheap boots, but for a smart pair that could be worn to compete in, do not seem overly expensive.

Brogini Vicenza leather gaiters

The Brogini Vicenza leather gaiters are very attractive gaiters, made of lovely supple leather with a soft inside for extra comfort.

They are a different shade of brown to the Brogini Trieste boots I tested them with, which isn’t a problem for riding at home – it would look odd in competition like this, but with a matching colour boot they would definitely be smart enough.

Getting the right size was a bit tricky; I’m usually an XS in leggings but my calves measured 35cm at the widest part (and 42cm from floor to knee) so going by the size guide, I went for the medium.

They fitted, although they were quite tight over the boots, but when being ridden in they seemed to have some excess material that caused some wrinkling. They were comfortable to ride in, but there was some pinching to my leg going on in the stirrup-leather area in canter.

You can use them with spurs, but the spurs had to go on after the chaps, which meant some more wrinkling. I liked the fact they do up from the top down, which is less awkward than the other way round, and there’s a tab with a popper to keep them done up and looking smarter. They’re good value too with an RRP of £59.95.

Verdict

Initial thoughts – very smart and not expensive but the fit could have been better.

The riding boot is an essential kit for the sport, but choosing whether to wear long or short riding boots opens all sorts of doors. Advice is specific on the sole of the boot – the British Horse Society says: “Boots should preferably have a smooth, through sole and a small heel (no less than ½in high). This means there should be no break in the sole from heel to toe, so there is nothing to catch on the stirrup.” However when it comes to the actual boot, the guidance is less forthcoming. Even the Pony Club, which used to specify short (or jodhpur) boots for children, now permits short (jodhpur) boots with chaps or clips, or knee-length boots. Either can be black or brown. Most competitions permit short (with same-coloured chaps or gaiters) or long boots. So how do you decide which is right for you?

Safety and protection are key, but the style depends on your riding experience, budget, climate, fashion sense, age, preferred discipline and even body shape.

Long riding boots

Long boots are smart, traditionally more formal and the common choice for adult competition riders. The boot covers the whole calf up to the knee but the styles vary widely. The most elegant look is the high-cut dress boot – often preferred by dressage riders. Laced-front field boots are more common with riders who jump, hunt and go cross-country due to the flexibility at the ankle allowing greater freedom of movement. The more traditionally-shaped boot with a straighter top and garter straps is still found in the show ring, although an increasing number of riders in this discipline are also moving towards boots with a shaped top and no garter straps.

The more you pay, the better the technology and quality of material; leather is the most traditional, while rubber or synthetic boots are popular among leisure riders. Yard boots are an option for everyday wear. They are durable and comfortable, being less stiff than a leather boot. They are a useful boot to wear round the stables and can be used for riding, although not permitted for competition. However, choose wisely as some have a heavy tread which can get caught on the stirrup, wedging the foot, which is dangerous if you are unseated. The tread should be offset, rather than going right across the sole, and an appropriately wide stirrup used (with 1.5in gap between the stirrup and widest part of the foot).

The pros

Provided they are well cared-for, they look stunning – traditional yet professional and elegant.

Long boots prevent chafing and pinching from the stirrup leathers, as well as offering some protection from a kick or in a fall.

Some riders feel that the stability they offer can help them maintain a better lower-leg position.

They keep you warm and dry in winter.

While you can usually wear short boots and gaiters or chaps for competition, long boots look smart and traditional.

The cons

Many designs of long boot come with zippers, but the pull-on varieties can be back-breaking to take off even with a boot-jack. Some riders find long boots restrictive and cumbersome – they can take time to wear in.

Long boots require more maintenance – polishing to keep them smart and in good nick, as well as boot trees, such as Cathcart Elliot’s tall boot shapers, to maintain their shape and prevent them wrinkling round the ankle.

You’ll also need to have them correctly fitted at a tack shop as it’s not just the foot size you need to accommodate, but the length and width of calf. It’s an expensive outlay if they aren’t quite right, and the made-to-measure option is pricier still. Those with short or wide calves may find it difficult to find something suitable, although manufacturers produce a variety of sizes.

Long boots are generally more expensive than short, however you get what you pay for – a lot more material and the polished, formal look. Synthetic long boots are far cheaper, and a potential alternative for those on a budget. Many riders keep a smart pair for show days, using synthetic or short boots for everyday riding.

The verdict

Once you have found a pair of long boots that fits you well, there’s no going back. Nothing looks smarter than a beautifully made pair of tall leather riding boots, making them the quintessential purchase for many riders. They are pricey, and you might choose to wear less smart riding boots round the yard, but the leg support and protection they offer is a major advantage.

Short riding boots

These go by different names – jodhpur boots, paddock boots or short boots. They cover the ankle and allow a close contact between your leg and the horse, and are generally viewed as more informal. Children traditionally use short boots, and they remain a common choice for juniors and beginners because they allow increased flexibility and are more affordable.

Short riding boots should be teamed with jodhpurs and either half chaps that cover the lower leg, or jodhpur clips (an elastic strap connection the bottom of the jodhpurs under the arch of the sole of the boots, to prevent the jodhpurs from riding up or twisting).

As with the long boots, there is a vast range of short boot, from elasticated, zipper, lace-up and in a range of materials, from leather to synthetic.

Always check with the competition rulebook which type of riding boot is permitted.

The pros

Easy to slip on and comfortable, especially in hot weather when a long boot may be sweaty.

A general-purpose boot that is usually sturdy enough to stand up to everyday use on the yard.

A smart leather short boot can resemble a long boot when teamed with the right half-chap.

Easier for beginners and juniors to develop feel when learning to give leg aids to a horse.

The cons

Not as smart or elegant as the long boot; however, a quality leather boot paired with similar half-chaps is a good alternative.

Without the protection of the long boot on the calf, the stirrup leather can chafe of pinch.

The lower leg is not protected in the event of a fall or a kick.

The verdict

The best option for juniors, leisure riders, those on a budget or with calves that don’t fit in standard sized boots.

If you’re competing, you’re likely to need two pairs of boots anyway – a durable pair of short boots for everyday, and a smart long pair to keep clean and smart for competition.

An equestrian boot firm is raising concerns about delays in importing products after it lost products worth over £10,000 en route from Europe.

Tuffa Boots founder Michelle Girling told H&H 56 pairs of boots were stolen from a consignment that came from Portugal this month.

“They opened the boxes methodically, and took four pairs from each carton of six, then closed them, re-taped them and put all the straps back on,” she said.

“They put the shrink wrap back on and put them on the pallets so when they were delivered, everything looked intact, and the correct number of cartons, but when we opened the shrink wrap, we could see the boxes had been tampered with.”

Ms Girling said the delays on freight coming from the Continent she has been experiencing since Brexit may have allowed the thieves their opportunity.

“The freight company doesn’t seem to have any ideas, although they must have been well organised; they’d have needed a van to put the good in,” she said.

Ms Girling contacted police, then last Friday found some boots of the same type, which she believes are some of the stolen pairs, for sale on eBay.

“I’ve told the police, who have done nothing, and eBay, and they’ve done nothing,” she said.

“I’m so worried about freight coming into the country and it just being a free-for-all, and then it’s an easy route to sell them on eBay, with no one doing anything. The world is hard enough anyway, then there’s all the post-Brexit costs and delays, without wholesale theft.”

A Norfolk Constabulary spokesman told H&H: “Police had a report of riding boots worth £10,640 stolen in transit to a company in Dereham Road, Ovington, Thetford, some time between 23 January and 2 February.

“Enquiries are still ongoing and the freight companies involved are carrying out their own investigations.

“Anyone with information should contact PC Stuart Doe at Norfolk Constabulary on 101 quoting reference number 36/7392/21.”

These boots were very comfortable and hard wearing to use all day long, but were also very stylish to wear on smart occasions. There were very easy to clean and to look after and the colour didn’t fade at all after multiple cleanings. I was also very impressed at how watertight they were. They gave me 100% comfort without being flimsy.

Likes and dislikes

I really like how soft and comfy these are to wear, plus the fact that they are both practical around the yard while also being very smart for showjumping, dressage and eventing competitions as well as hunting.

Verdict

I would recommend these boots to friends for any discipline. Although not cheap, they are worth the investment.

First impressions

I really liked the style of these boots, which reminded me of a very popular brand but with a much smaller price tag. They were really comfy from the moment I tried them on and I like the single zip.

Overview of performance

These boots didn’t take long at all to wear in, had a good fit and didn’t rub anywhere. I also found that they worked really well under any type of half chaps. They were secure and comfortable in the stirrups as well as being sturdy while wearing around the yard. I have worn them all day nearly everyday, they have needed minimal looking after and have not split anywhere.

Likes and dislikes

I really like the style and the fact they are very good to wear around the yard, but also look good at competition. If I had a complaint, it is that they are not particularly warm and my feet did get quite cold on chiller days.

Verdict

These boots are very, very good value for money, and are suitable to be worn anywhere by anyone.

I was a bit skeptical at first about the two zips as this wasn’t what I have used in the past. They did look very comfortable and durable.

These boots were very comfortable as the combination of the soft sole and the flexible leather meant they didn’t need any wearing in and lasted well. The two zips made them stylish, but were as quick to take on and off as a one zip would be.

Likes and dislikes

I really like how comfortable they are from the off and yet they still tough enough to do the job. They are quite expensive though.

A smart looking boot and I was looking forward to using the duel zip design. I was also interested to find out how the leather was going to stand up to wear.

These proved to be a smart pair of boots that stood up to hard everyday use well. I did find the leather quite hard to start with but once they had been worn a few times, they broke in well. I also found the double zip fitted more comfortably than a traditionally designed single fastening would. They remained waterproof throughout the test period and kept my feet warm on the colder mornings.

I liked how comfortable and smart these boots are, plus how well they coped with everyday use. I thought they were great value.

The Paddock Boots Venezia from Felix Bühler are sporty paddock boots in full-grain Italian cowhide. First impressions

These boots looked so smart and sophisticated. I felt that they could definitely be worn at the smartest events when the rider wants to look their best.

Overview of performance

These were really comfortable, especially in the sole. They were flexible and didn’t need any wearing in. They also fitted really nicely. I did find that the laces mean they take up some time to put on, but once on they were great.

Likes and dislikes

I like how smart and comfortable these are. They were great when walking around at events. I thought they were almost too smart to use a simple yard boot.

Verdict

They are very smart and comfortable. I would suggest keeping them for competition use. They look very smart to walk around in too.

I liked how padded and comfortable they were and how well they worked with the Premier Equine half chaps. The boots I tried were quite a light brown and so might be difficult to match with a different brand of half chap that is a different shade.

I received so many comments on how smart these chaps look while in the saddle. Not only were they extremely comfortable while riding, but also were great for doing yard work off the horse. They proved to be very tough and hard wearing plus they maintained their fit while being worn everyday. Although they are on the more expensive side, they are worth the investment.

Likes and dislikes

I really like the leather they are made out of as it looks very stylish, is soft but also so tough and hardwearing, plus didn’t need any wearing in.

I would highly recommend these chaps. Many people who have seen me in them are planning to buy them.

First impressions

They slipped on really well first time, while being snug and flattering on my calf. The material looked really easy to clean, hard wearing and flexible.

Overview of performance

These half chaps were very lightweight and breathable – so much so that you barely felt like you had them on. The zip stayed securely fastened while riding and they didn’t pinch or rub at all. They were very breathable so my legs didn’t get sweaty. I also liked how fitted they were without needing any wearing in.

Likes and dislikes

I loved how easy they are to clean, just needed a single wipe over, which was a real time saver. I would normally got for a more traditional look and these are quite modern in design so their appearance might not be to everyone’s taste.

Verdict

A good choice for a rider who wants a pair of half chaps that are modern, low maintenance and flexible.

First impressions

These half chaps fitted well over a pair of boots and I liked the design at the top and the bottom. I was interested to see how they would stand up to me riding multiple horses a day as the leather seemed quite thin.

Overview of performance

These looked really smart and were worn on the yard, at competitions and out hunting. I was impressed at how well they stood up to work as they didn’t show any sign of giving. The zips were easy to use, didn’t slip and have lasted, but I did find that the popper at the top came undone at random times.

Likes and dislikes

The leather is soft and flexible, while also being hard wearing. I did find them a little baggy at the top and could sometimes feel my stirrup leathers pinching me when used my leg hard.

Verdict

These half chaps are very attractive, durable and good value for money.

These gaiters fit nicely, were easy to put on and had good elastic with plenty of give so didn’t need a lot of wearing in. I found that they fitted well and looked good with whichever black jodhpur boots I was wearing.

I like how comfortable they are and how easy they were to put on and take off. They are however quite plain in design and I feel that they are relatively expensive compared to some others on test.

Verdict

A good pair of half chaps for wearing a home, but I would choose others in the group test for competitions.

These half chaps fitted well over the Premier Equine Balmoral Leather Paddock/Riding Boots, however they were quite short and didn’t fit as snugly as some of the other half chaps on test. Although they were thin, this didn’t negatively affect their performance and it made them very flexible.

Likes and dislikes

I like the suede on the inside as it gave me a good grip on the horse, plus how flexible they are. I’m personally not a fan of the lighter colour, although they did compliment the brown Premier Equine jodhpur boots very well.

First impressions

A very smart pair of gaiters with a simple design.

Overview of performance

These gaiters were soft, easy to put on straight away and didn’t require any breaking in. They worked well with jodphur boots and were smart enough to wear at competitions. Unfortunately the zip did clog up with mud and became difficult to use after a while.

Likes and dislikes

I like the soft and flexible leather, plus their overall style and look. I found they were quite baggy around the knee area, which I wasn’t keen on. I’d suggest you try them on to check the fit before buying them.

Verdict

They wouldn’t be my first choice, but if you wanted a pair just for competitions then they are worth trying on.

Our reviewer was impressed by the look and smartness of these boots, but had issues with their shape

My first impression of these boots was that I was impressed by how smart they looked for a low cost boot. I thought that the shape of the boot was stylish and I was keen on the brogue detailing on the toe.

The soft waxy leather looked of good quality and the colour (brown) was a very pleasant shade. I wasn’t sure about the ankle shape, it looked boxy and squared off at the top and also quite tall, I thought they may rub.

After wearing these boots both around the yard and riding, various features have stood out to me. Firstly the ankle shape and elastic sides proved to be an issue when riding because it makes the boot less secure around your leg allowing your heel to lift inside the boot when your feet are pressing down in the stirrups. This is very distracting when riding and after a prolonged time would likely lead to blisters or rubs. This shape also causes the boot to gape and catch against the horse’s sides. I like the look and ease of the zip front to these boots, however it does not help with the problem I have just raised, as it does not allow you to tighten the boot. Laces like on the Rhinegold Indiana boot may minimise the problem.

The foot bed is cushioned making it comfortable but there is minimal arch support. I find arch support an important feature in any riding boot that I wear as I have high arches to my feet and lack of support in this area causes me to grip with my toes and tighten in my leg resulting in decreased riding performance and sore feet.

In summary, compared to their more pricey counterparts, the elite Detroit boots don’t quite match up but for an inexpensive boot they would hold their own in the market. The issues that I have noted to do with the shape of the boot may be helped if the boots were worn with chaps, however I do not believe any have been made to match this model yet.

The reviewer of these boots struggled to find any downside to them

The self-service made-to-measure Cavallo long horse riding boots service is pretty comprehensive. Using a chart and instructions, I measured my legs myself at home, over breeches and socks. Worried I might not have done it correctly, I measured a few times.

The form calls for many different measurements; seven in total. These include not only the standard calf height and width, but also measurements around the ankle, just under the knee, round the lower calf and a full foot drawing (which you do on the back of the form so no extra paper required – very eco friendly) to make sure the foot size you’ve given is accurate.

So I sent off the form.

Six weeks later the boots arrived. They are supplied with heel raisers; small wedges that sit under your heel to lift your leg in the boot. This is because the current fashion (which I totally subscribe to) is to have the boots come up as high as possible, both at the back of the knee and with the bow shape on the outside over the top of it.

The first impressions of the boots are that they are very well made, with smooth lines. And they fit like a glove.

The leather is quite stiff on the outside, but not as much as some other makes I’ve worn.

The starkest difference to other long leather boots I’ve had is the footbed. They are actually comfortable, with squishy soles. I’m so used to thin leather soles that this was a bit of a revelation. I didn’t even realise how uncomfortable my old boots had been until I wore these ones.

The downside was that I couldn’t really walk in the boots as they didn’t have much give at the ankle and were so tall I could barely bend my legs (going to the loo in them was an absolute no-no), but then these are riding boots, not hiking boots.

Once on the horse the soles offer a level of grip I am also not used to and I realised that I’ve been scrunching up my toes in my leather-soled boots, probably to keep my feet anchored in the stirrups. It was only when I stopped doing it, wearing these Cavallos, that I realised I’d been doing it at all.

When riding, they offer the delicate balance between sensitivity and feeling on the inside, where the leather is butter-soft, but with that sharp, stiff dressage look on the outside.

They required no breaking in and were immediately comfortable to ride in. I didn’t have to wear them around the house until the pain subsided and I do know of a number of riders who’ve had to do this with some makes.

The bow on the outside at the top is extraordinarily high. It did initially dig in a little (at what felt like about four inches above my knee!) but once the boots were worn in, it no longer caused any problems. And I love how the bow looks when mounted; it appears to lengthen even my stubby little legs.

The subtle Cavallo branding at the top of the boot shaft is sculpted into the detailing at the top of the leg. It helps emphasise how high the bow is, which I like.

I’m used to — and prefer — boots with zips at the front on the inside, and these work very well. Who needs to fiddle around with boot pulls on dressage boots, eh? These are easy to do up, don’t try to undo themselves while you’re riding and do not catch or snag when being done up. Other boots I’ve had have been fiddly to zip up, catching on the little leather skirt inside that’s supposed to shield your leg from the zip.

And I did give these boots a fairly hard time during the test, including getting them very muddy one day while out galloping in wet conditions. I was careful to give them a proper clean afterwards and was pleased to find that any residual grit didn’t affect the zip’s smooth glide.

In the eight months I’ve tested them, these boots haven’t dropped at all and I’ve had to continue to use the heel raisers. I don’t actually mind that though. It probably indicates that after years and years of use they would only drop minimally, which is ideal as nobody likes the saggy wrinkled look — especially not in a pair of competition boots.

However, it does mean that each time you put them on you have to shove your hand in to make sure the heel raiser is in the right place. But that’s not a big drama.

And, for the real divas out there, you can even order them with crystal tops. Sign me up!

My first impression of the Kinpurnie Stirling zip paddock boots was that they were stylish, with their attractive detailing across the toe, and of a narrow fit, which gives a neat appearance that is quite rare in most short riding boots. They received favourable comments from others at my livery yard, with more than one person asking me which brand they were.

My feet are fairly small (size four) and quite narrow and flat so in some jodhpur boots I’ve tried I’ve felt like my feet are swimming around in a lot of space. These boots were closer fitting than many I have worn and I particularly like that around the ankle as the lack of bulk makes wearing them with half chaps or gaiters much easier and more comfortable. I’d say these boots were true to size, but I expect that they might not suit someone with a bulk or wide foot quite so well.

The tumbled leather on the boot’s upper is soft and thin, which made the boots comfortable from the start. The boots are also leather lined. As yet the boots haven’t shown any obvious wear, although the leather has dropped slightly below the ankle (as shown in the pictures). I found that the footbed isn’t as comfortable as some other short boots I have worn, although my feet have not got sore from wearing these. I can just feel the surface/stirrup iron under my foot more clearly than in some others.

The zips are a great addition, making the boots extremely easy to put on and take off, and they have not snagged or got stuck during the trial period.

While the detailing on the toe is attractive, and the soft leather makes them comfortable, it does effect the ease with which you can easily buff them to a high shine when cleaning, but even with a slightly matte natural appearance, they still look smart.

A great pair of short riding boots for riders with slim feet

Our reviewer liked these boots for use in most equestrian disciplines but had reservations over their suitability for competitive polo

The Spanish Boot Company polo boots are a really eyecatching and functional pair of boots. The ones tested are a size eight in tan.

Although the website seems more geared to selling these to women it does state that they are unisex and were tested by a male.

First impressions were really good and I found the boots really easy to put on due to the front zip. The sizing was just right on a man but slightly baggy on the ankle. It is advised on the website that ladies should choose a smaller size.

I’ve used these boots most days from hacking out, showjumping, cross-country schooling and a bit of stick and balling. They were very comfortable but did find the soles quite slippery in the rain when used with tilting stirrup irons. There is a leather strap and popper at the top of the zip but I would like to see another to protect the zip at the ankle. The zip being on the front is vulnerably placed and I would like it to have more protection incase of impact in a game situation.

It states on the website that you should wax the leather before use to maintain water repellency. It would have been useful to have been sent some of the Spanish Boot Company wax as the stuff I used didn’t work so well.

All-round a good comfortable pair of boots but I’m not sure they would be robust enough for competitive polo.

Dressage riders are now permitted to wear a wider range of horse riding boots when competing.

At British Dressage’s (BD) latest rules and fixtures committee meeting (7 March), the team looked at a wide range of boots. Some met with the current rules and others did not.

Following the meeting, a rule change was put in place to relax the organisation’s boot rules.

“The committee was in agreement that what people wear on their feet has no bearing on their performance and regardless of personal taste that all the boots that were reviewed were acceptable,” said a BD spokesman.

“The committee therefore put forward a proposed rule change to the board to simply allow boots suitable for riding in to be worn, regardless of pattern and features, however keeping in line with the wording of the jacket and hat rule referring to conservative colours in muted tones.”

Each week the BD office receives numerous enquiries as to whether certain riding boots are permitted, with issues from style and colour to pattern and detailing.

“The equestrian market is flooded with a huge variety of boots in various styles which given the opportunity, members would like to wear,” added the spokesman.

“We are delighted to share that the board have approved the change as of immediate effect.”

Bridles and spurs

The FEI recently added into its 2016 rules that bridles with a combined noseband with no throat lash are permitted.

BD adopts the same rules as the FEI and as such has clarified which types of bridle are permitted in competition.

The organisation has also clarified its rules surrounding spurs, following confusion among members as which styles are permitted and which are not, particularly in relation to rowelled and rollerball styles.

Our reviewer adored these stylish but hardy boots

A long weekend in Germany in February is a tough test for even the hardiest of boots.

Foolishly, I packed no other shoes to take a tour round the country visiting studs and standing on freezing ground looking at stallions and youngstock and mares and more stallions. Wearing shoes or boots for the first time is frequently a painful experience; they rub here, they pinch there.

Not these boots.

Having already tried and been impressed with Fairfax & Favor’s heeled Regina boots (read the review here), I knew they’d be quality boots.

We test a lot of yard boots at Horse & Hound but no others have caused quite the stir that these did when I opened the box.

The smell of them was overwhelming; that inimitable smell of top quality leather brought my colleagues over to sniff the box and we all agreed: these boots smell fantastic.

I was pleasantly surprised by the look of them too; yard boots are often clunky affairs with wide calves which ruck up round the ankle and drop by a few inches, eventually resembling a crumpled sock sagging round the ankles.

This pair are an attractive pale fawn brown (oak) with a slight peachy finish. A bit lighter than in the photos on the Fairfax & Favor website. They’re completely waterproof; there is a membrane inside which means water can’t penetrate through the zip, which is so often the weak point of this style of boot.

The front part – all the way from the toe to the strip below the knee – is made of a single piece of leather, meaning a really smooth, elegant finish without bulky seams.

The zip means that they can be shaped for a close fit around the ankle yet still easy to get on.

What these boots achieve is a really stylish shape but a super practical boot. The sole is chunky without being lumpy and my feet never got cold – as they have in previous years on these sort of trips. The tread is grippy and I can walk on icy ground without fear of slipping.

You can also submerge your foot into puddles and not end up with a wet patch all along the zip.

The foot shape is elegant and not in any way clumpy. This is a boot combining total practicality and functionality with excellent design and finish.

My only criticism is that the inner liner underneath the foot can slip about a bit, so you have to make sure it’s positioned correctly when you first put your foot in. It also folds up when you take the boots off, so I made sure I reached back in and flattened it out straight away so that it learned to stay flat.

My stupidity in not bringing a second pair of shoes to Germany went unpunished and my feet and legs were pain-free and comfort-full for the duration.

Yes, these boots are very expensive, but if you’re looking for the complete package, look no further.

These boots are sturdy but not particularly smart due to their baggy fit

I was excited about these boots because my old Dubarrys are starting to look like they have seen better days after many years devoted service and I hoped these would work as replacement boots to wear when reporting outside in cold and wet weather.

The boots looked smart when I saw them lying in the box so the omens were good. However, trying them on brought disappointment — the boots were too big around the leg, so while I could pull them in using the straps, the leather then bowed inwards and they didn’t look very smart. I considered putting my jeans outside them and still wearing them for work on dryer days, but this didn’t really work because the straps stick out the back of the boots and so they pushed my trousers into a strange shape.

As the boots didn’t look smart, I decided they weren’t suitable for work and that I would wear them at home instead. I have found them very useful for this — in the past I would go outside before riding in my wellies because I needed to catch my horse from a wet field and hose his legs and my jodphur boots are not waterproof. I’d then have to change into jodphur boots and half chaps before I rode. Now I just go outside in these boots and wear them to get ready and to ride — this has saved time and the hassle of carrying more kit down to the field.

I have found the boots comfortable and waterproof for yard work, dog walking and riding. The fur lining means they are very warm in cold weather, which is great, but I imagine I will have to stop wearing them once spring comes as they will be too hot!

I was unsure how I would feel riding in the boots because in addition to being too big round the leg, the foot and ankle are not very close-fitting. I am used to riding in neat jodphur boots and half chaps and have never ridden in mucker boots or similar.

However, I felt perfectly comfortable riding in these boots and had no concerns about my foot getting stuck in the stirrup, even though I use quite small stirrups. My only concern about the fit comes back to the problem about the leg being too big — the boots bagged open a bit at the top so while I haven’t worn them in heavy rain, I imagine in relentless downpours I would get water inside.

Now that I have these boots, I think I will get a lot of wear out of them and find them very useful. However, I wouldn’t spend £120 on a pair of boots to wear at home only and I am too vain to wear them out anywhere smart because of the problem with the fit, so for me they do not represent value for money. I am a standard size 12 and I would say my legs are slim to normal — they are certainly not super skinny — so I would imagine this is quite a common problem.

These boots are warm, waterproof and multi-purpose making them ideal for a busy rider/groom/owner during the cold winter months. The boots have a rubber outer sole with a thick neoprene leg so are completely waterproof. This means you can slosh through deep mud/muck while mucking out, turning out and catching in, then simply hose off the dirt, jump on board and go out riding.

The pair I tested was size 4 in black and I felt they were a good fit. These boots are extremely well insulated meaning I could wear them on cold days with just my normal riding socks. According to the manufacturer they are designed to be worn in temperatures between 10 to -30 degrees C. I wouldn’t recommend wearing them in warmer weather as I tried this and found my feet did get uncomfortably warm. The coldest weather I wore them in was around -5 and my feet did not feel cold. I have not had the opportunity to test them at colder temperatures than this.

The boots are described as having a ‘fleece’ lining. This is a thin micro fleece type material rather than a wooly deep pile material. They are extremely comfortable and have not rubbed at all, even after five months of wear.

A number of people have commented positively about the appearance of these boots. With a patterned leg and fake buckle on the outside, they are more stylish that many boots of this type. I have slim legs and these boots were less fitted around my calf that similar longer ‘riding’ style boots, but were still very comfortable to wear while out hacking.

Initially the boots were a little stiff around the ankle, but it didn’t take long for them to become more flexible. I wouldn’t choose to use these boots for schooling or jumping as I prefer a closer feel of my leg against my horse’s side, but they are idea for hacking, particularly in cold weather, as well as being extremely hardwearing and ideal to wear around the stables.
