Teenage rider charged after horses ‘intentionally injured with a sharp object’ at show

A teenage girl was arrested in Las Vegas after three horses were “intentionally injured with a sharp object”.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) confirmed that the young girl was taken into custody in the early hours of 30 May and charged with 15 offences.

The US National Barrel Horse Association (NBHA) confirmed that the teenager was a competitor at the NBHA 2026 Professional’s Choice Vegas Super Show at the South Point Casino in Las Vegas.

In a statement, the NBHA said there was an “isolated incident during the early hours of Saturday, 30 May, involving the mistreatment of a limited number of horses by an event competitor”.

The situation was addressed immediately with police, security and the NBHA, the statement said, adding: “The individual involved has been removed and placed in the care of authorities and there is no ongoing threat of any kind.”

An LVMPD spokesperson said the department received a report that a horse had been injured at just after 2am on Saturday morning.

“Patrol officers arrived and learned that three horses had been intentionally injured with a sharp object,” he said.

“The LVMPD animal cruelty section was notified and responded to the scene. Through the course of the investigation, detectives identified a teenage girl as a possible suspect.

“The teen had access to the barn, and investigators believe she may have used a knife to inflict multiple injuries to the horses. While the injuries are not considered life-threatening, they are expected to prevent the horses from competing.”

The girl who was arrested was found by detectives at a hotel nearby and taken into custody. She was then taken to Clark County juvenile hall, where she was charged with 12 counts of wilful/malicious kill/maim/torture animal – horse, and three of felony malicious destruction of private property over $5,000.

It is understood the girl has made one court appearance and is due to appear again this week.

‘Our darkest hour’: one horse killed and seven injured in ‘evil’ stabbing attack

One horse died and another is in hospital after eight were stabbed in their own fields in Canada, in an attack described as a “terrible dream you were begging to wake up from”.

Police are appealing for information on the “disturbing act of cruelty” at Eagle Wing Ranch, in the Welland area of Niagara, Ontario, last week.

“We have no words to describe the shock and devastation our barn staff and family felt as yesterday unfolded,” Amanda Janssen of Eagle Wing said. “It felt like a terrible dream you were begging to wake up from.

“The grief is heavy as we mourn the loss of a very special horse and the injuries of seven others. We are still reeling trying to make sense of something so unnecessary and evil.”

Ms Janssen said all good wishes for the recovery of the mare in hospital are appreciated, and thanked vet Matt Nugent, who “came promptly and triaged horses as we sickeningly came to conclusions this was an act of violence”.

“Thank you to the NRP, detectives and forensics for their professionalism, attentiveness and empathy,” she said. “Thank you to my barn staff who handled the darkest hour with calmness and capability. Thank you to all the overwhelming support we have felt from our horse community near and far.

“Right now we are taking it day by day and hugging our ponies a little tighter.”

A GoFundMe page set up in support of Ms Janssen has raised nearly $50,000 (over £27,000).

A spokesperson for the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) said officers launched an investigation on 31 July.

“The incident occurred overnight at a horse boarding farm located near Buchner Road and Highway 140 in Welland,” he said. “During their morning routine, farm staff discovered that several horses had sustained injuries consistent with cuts or stab wounds.

“Tragically, one horse was found deceased on scene. Another was transported to an out-of-town veterinary hospital for emergency care. Several additional horses received treatment on site. In total, eight horses were targeted in this act of cruelty.”

NRPS forensic officers examined the scene and the investigation is ongoing.

“The NRPS takes allegations of animal cruelty very seriously,” the spokesperson said. “Investigators are appealing to the public for assistance. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Niagara Regional Police Service at 905-688-4111, option 3, extension 1009487.”

‘Traumatised’ pony collapses after youths tied string around his throat in second attack

The owner of a riding school has spoken of her heartbreak and fear after three of her ponies were targeted in their field by youths, who tied string around their heads so tightly that one collapsed.

On 26 April at around 5pm staff at Eston Equitation Centre, Middlesbrough, saw three teenage boys in the distance in their field, which borders the Eston hills. Two of the boys were riding elderly 13.2h pony Billy, and one was on pony Teena, who is recovering from lameness.

“We could see the boys smacking Billy with a stick, and when they saw us coming they got off, climbed over fencing on to the hills, and took off on quad bikes,” Laura Storey, the centre’s owner told H&H.

“They look to be around ages 14-20, and seeing them hitting Billy was awful. When we got to the ponies we found that they had string tied round their faces and through their mouths, like makeshift halters. The string had cut into Billy’s face.”

A vet attended to Billy and Teena, and police were called.

“We hoped that would be the last of it, having caught them in the act, and we increased our field checks. We didn’t see anything else, then on 5 May when we went to check the ponies at 7.30am, we realised one pony, Jingles, wasn’t with the others,” said Laura.

“We found him choking with string tied around his throat and through his mouth. It was tied like a noose, so it had pulled tighter and tighter round this throat, he couldn’t breathe and he collapsed. It was so tight we couldn’t get a finger in between, but we managed to cut it off. He got up but collapsed again”

Jingles, an 11.2hh Welsh, suffered cuts to his mouth and has been “traumatised” by the event. He was treated by a vet, and Laura contacted the police again.

“We checked the rest of the ponies and they seemed ok, but we found large sections of the field’s outer fencing had been pulled down. We have outer and inner fencing, and we think they’d have tried to take the ponies if it hadn’t been for the inner fence,” said Laura.

“Later that day, at 5.30pm, we could see another a group of boys and girls in the field again, and we chased them down but some got away on quads, and some ran on to the A174.”

Laura shared what has been happening on Facebook in the hope word would spread to help keep the horses and ponies safe.

“I just don’t understand why this group is doing this. We are taking it in shifts to watch over the ponies at all times, including through the night. We are exhausted but I don’t know what the solution is. It’s been an absolute nightmare for us but we just want to make sure the horses and ponies are ok. It’s such a worry that they will come back,” said Laura.

“At first I didn’t want to put anything about it online, but I felt if more people are aware then there will be more eyes on the horses and ponies. It’s a large 20-acre field and takes an hour to walk the perimeter, and they all live out together.

“The trouble is because the field is on a hill, the group could always see us coming from the bottom and could get away. We hope if people are out walking on the Eston hills and see something happening then they can immediately let us know or phone the police.

“We’ve had lots of support, and people in the local community have been disgusted about what’s happened,” said Laura.

“It’s just heartbreaking, we are a riding school and our horses and ponies are family. They come to us and are never sold, so we have lots of retired or older ones. They should be safe in their own field. We bought the business in 2016, and have never known anything like this.”

A Cleveland Police spokesman said officers attended Eston Equitation and provided forensic, crime prevention, and safeguarding advice and the force’s equine officer will highlight the incidents at this month’s regional equine meeting.

“In the meantime, we would appeal to parents and carers to check what their children are doing while out of the house and to stress to them that police will identify and deal with anyone causing harm or suffering to animals.

“We would also appeal for anyone with information to contact Cleveland Police on the 101 number quoting ref 076245.”

‘The worst injury the vet had seen’: owner’s devastation after youths throwing sticks and stones chase young mare through fence

The owner of a horse who suffered serious injuries when she was chased into a fence by youths throwing sticks and stones says she cannot comprehend how anyone could act in that way.

Karen Widdicks’ four-year-old American paint mare Millie broke two rails of the fence in her panicked flight from the intruders, on 11 April. The vet spent hours sewing up the gashes in her foreleg and chest, and for a while it was not certain she would pull through.

“The vet said if the fence had been any higher, she’d have died,” Karen told H&H. “She’d cut an artery too so if we hadn’t found her so soon, we’d have lost her. There was blood everywhere in the field, it was horrible.”

Karen’s son Martyn told H&H the owner of another horse alerted Karen to the fact Millie had broken out. The youths, who must have climbed into Millie’s field as there is no public right of way in it, were chasing her, throwing sticks and stones, and they were caught on CCTV.

“People have come forward since to say they saw them doing it,” he said. “Mum’s devastated. I can’t believe any parent would allow their children out without teaching them about respect, for animals and people.”

Karen said Millie faces a long road to recovery, and that the vet said she should be able to hack out eventually, but any more is unlikely.

“The vet said it was the worst injury she’d seen,” she said. “Millie’s not a horse to run easily so she must have been absolutely petrified. She broke two rails of the fence, and they would have just walked off and left her.

“What makes them think they can throw sticks and stones at a horse who’s just standing there? I can’t comprehend how a human being could want to inflict pain on a defenceless animal.”

A friend set up a fundraising page as Millie is not insured for vets’ fees and as well as the significant initial costs, she will need ongoing treatment.

“A few people said I should start a page and I wasn’t sure, it felt like begging, but I’m so grateful to everyone who’s donated,” Karen said.

“I just want to raise awareness; people need to know it’s not all right to do something like this. It could have been worse too; there’s an 11-month-old foal in the field and who knows what could have happened to him? It’s beyond words, and people need to understand.”

A spokesman for Northamptonshire Police told H&H: “The people involved have been identified and enquiries into this incident continue to be progressed.”

Elderly rescue mule stabbed in ‘vicious’ attack

An elderly rescue mule is recovering after he was stabbed in a horrific attack at a sanctuary.

Tommy, 20, was stabbed in the face while in his field at Undercliff Pony Rescue, in Rye, East Sussex, some time between Sunday evening (8 August) and the early hours of Monday morning.

The sanctuary’s owner Sharon Baker told H&H Tommy, who was in the field with five horses, was discovered by her 19-year-old daughter Madison.

“Madison went to the field and noticed blood everywhere. She found Tommy with blood on his legs and a huge wound on his face. She managed to get hold of him but he was very distressed,” said Sharon.

“At first I thought he must have caught himself on something but on cleaning the wound I thought ‘this looks like it was caused by a knife’.”

A vet arrived to treat Tommy and agreed with Sharon that the wound had been caused deliberately.

“The knife has gone from the outside of his face through to the inside of his mouth and shattered some of his teeth. He’s had stitches and is on antibiotics and lots of painkillers,” said Sharon.

“He’s going to need further vet treatment and dental work but the main thing now is making sure the wound doesn’t become infected. We want to give him the best possible care.”

Sharon said she was “devastated” by the attack.

“Tommy has been with us for three years and when he arrived he didn’t trust anyone. It’s only the last six months he’s built up a special bond with Madison and all that could be undone now. It’s just heartbreaking, this is supposed to be their safe haven,” she said.

“I’m now installing CCTV in the fields, stables and at the gates so every square inch can be monitored 24 hours a day.”

Almost £7,000 has been raised by donations towards Tommy’s vet bills, his future care, and towards the CCTV. To donate visit the sanctuary’s Just Giving Page.

“It’s such a close-knit community here. Everyone knows the horses and our work and is disgusted by what’s happened,” said Sharon.

“I’m so overwhelmed by the donations – we’ve even had some from people on the other side of the world. It restores your faith in humanity.”

Sussex Police is appealing for witnesses or anyone with information about the “vicious attack” to come forward.

“Not only has this been a cruel attack on a helpless animal, it has caused a significant cost to the rescue charity who care for Tommy,” said PC Carlo Leone of the force’s rural crime team.

“We believe this to be an isolated incident but urge all equine owners in the area to review their security and stay vigilant.”

‘Landmark day’ for animal welfare as new legislation comes into force

Animal abusers could face a maximum of five years in prison from today (29 June) in what has been described as a “landmark” day for animal welfare.

The Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Act, which passed into law in April as reported by H&H, has now come into effect. This means courts will have the flexibility to impose tougher sentences for the worst animal abusers in England and Wales under the Animal Welfare Act. The law brings the countries in line with Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Welfare charities have campaigned for a number of years for increased sentencing and in 2017 the Government pledged to reform the maximum sentence, receiving cross-party support. The Bill was brought forward by MP Chris Loder as a private member’s bill in 2019.

A spokesman for the RSPCA said the charity is “celebrating this milestone”. In the last three years the RSPCA has secured 3,753 convictions in courts in England and Wales, and 156 individuals were given immediate prison terms. More than 130 offenders successfully prosecuted by the RSPCA were sentenced to six weeks or more in prison for cruelty offences.

RSPCA chief executive Chris Sherwood said this is a “landmark day” for animals and their welfare.

“For almost 200 years the RSPCA has been investigating animal cruelty and rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming animals. While we’ve seen vast changes in the way we keep animals during that time, as well as huge advances in legislation to better protect animal welfare, our sentences for animal abusers have long been letting our animals down,” he said.

“We’re absolutely thrilled that we’ve now reached this milestone moment and that courts will now have more flexibility to hand out sentences that better reflect the severity of the crimes they are dealing with and we hope the Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Act will act as a greater deterrent and help us cancel out cruelty once and for all.”

The worst animal abusers could face five years in prison as the “milestone” Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Bill is made law this week.

In 2017 the Government pledged to reform the maximum sentence for those prosecuted under the Animal Welfare Act, receiving support from cross-party politicians. The Bill was brought forward by West Dorset MP Chris Loder in June 2019.

Today (28 April) the Bill passed its final stage in Parliament and will receive royal assent tomorrow (29 April). The Bill, which is expected to come into force this year, means courts will have the flexibility to impose tougher sentences for the worst animal abusers. The law will bring England, and Wales once the Welsh Parliament passes a legislative consent motion, into line with Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Welfare charities have campaigned for a number of years for increased sentencing and the RSPCA said the Bill was a “huge step forward” for animal welfare.

“Tougher sentences will act as a stronger deterrent to potential animal abusers and will help us in our aim to cancel out animal cruelty once and for all,” said RSPCA chief executive Chris Sherwood.

“This reform is long overdue – for many years, the most violent and horrific abuse and cruelty received a maximum penalty of just a few months. We’re proud to have some of the best standards of animal welfare in the world but custodial sentences have long been letting us down.”

Baffled owner’s warning as ponies’ forelocks and tails chopped off in field

The owner of three ponies who were tied to a tree while their forelocks and tails were hacked off says she is baffled as to who would do such a thing.

Rhianon Loader’s former Shetland Pony Grand National ride Apollo and two show ponies were targeted in their field on 17 March.

Rhianon told H&H she called the five ponies to her as she climbed the gate into the field, and the first two to approach had not been touched.

“The other two who had been cut were show types so it wasn’t hugely obvious,” she said.

“I saw their tails, and thought it was odd — then I saw the Shetland.”

Apollo’s thick forelock had been chopped short. His tail had not been touched but the others’ tails had been cut to hock length.

“My first reaction was shock,” Rhianon said. “I walked round the field into the back half, which is full of trees. I thought no one would have gone in there but then I found the hair on the ground, and a headcollar still tied to a tree. They must have got the headcollars from the gate, caught the ponies and tied them up. I got a bit emotional after that.”

Rhianon believes the incident must have occurred in daylight, for those responsible to have been able to see what they were doing.

“It’s so odd,” she said. “I live in a really lovely village, where everyone knows everyone and everything, and watches out, so for it not to have been spotted is surprising.”

Rhianon reported the incident to police, who said they would keep their eyes open, but is unsure on what else to do for the best.

“I want other people in the area to be aware, and I’ve got some in-foal brood mares not far away, who I’m keeping a close eye on,” she said.

“Thankfully, I can see a funny side but if I’d still been racing Apollo, I’m not sure I’d be able to, looking like that.”

Tougher sentences for the worst animal abusers are a step closer, as potential offenders are warned “there is no place for animal cruelty in this country”.

MPs debated the Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Bill in the House of Commons today (3 February) where it passed the committee stage. This means the Bill will now move to the report stage, followed by a third reading at the House of Commons.

In 2017 the Government pledged to reform the maximum sentence for those prosecuted under the Animal Welfare Act in England, and the Bill would mean those guilty of the most serious acts of animal cruelty will face a maximum penalty of five years in prison, up from the current six months.

A spokesman for the RSPCA said the charity is “thrilled” about today’s debate and the charity hopes MPs from across all parties will come together to pass the Bill “for the good of the animals” across England.

The Welsh government is expected to put a legislative consent motion before the Welsh parliament meaning any change in law in England would also apply in Wales. Ireland and Scotland recently increased their maximum sentences to five years.

RSPCA director of advocacy and policy Heidi Allen said: “We warmly welcome the news that the Bill has passed through this stage and is one step closer to becoming law. We believe all political parties are aligned in their desire to get the Bill on to the statute book in this parliamentary session, in other words before the next Queen’s Speech which is expected in May. MPs and peers agree with us that no suffering animal can afford to wait another minute.

“We believe the will exists to speed the Bill through the House of Commons and House of Lords if the Government allows time for it.”

Ms Allen added that every day the charity receives reports of “unimaginable” cruelty and neglect inflicted on animals.

“It’s time that the sentences imposed on individuals who cause pain and suffering to animals reflect the severity of the crimes they are committing,” she said.

Pony found bludgeoned to death in sickening attack

A pony has been discovered bludgeoned to death and mutilated in a horrific attack as the police urge horse owners to be vigilant.

The RSPCA has issued an urgent appeal for information after the pony, who had been in a field with other horses, was found dead by his owners on Sunday (10 January) morning in Normanton, West Yorkshire.

“The owners made the terrible discovery and called West Yorkshire police, who in turn contacted us,” said an RSPCA spokesman.

RSPCA inspector John Gibson said it was a “truly appalling” incident which took place in an isolated spot off Boundary Lane in Normanton.

“This must have been terribly distressing for Filbert’s owners. Sadly horse mutilation is something that we do come across in our line of work up and down the country,” he said.

Inspector Sohail Mohammed, of the Wakefield north and rural neighbourhood policing team, said: “This was a sickening attack against a defenceless animal and I would also urge anyone with information about what happened to get in contact – either with the RSPCA or the force on 101 – quoting log number 871 of Sunday 10 January.”

Tougher sentences for the worst animal abusers have moved a step closer as the Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Bill makes progress through parliament.

The Bill passed its second reading in the House of Commons on Friday (23 October), backed by the Government.

The Bill would mean those guilty of the most serious acts of animal cruelty in England and Wales will face a maximum penalty of five years in prison, up from the current six months.

It is not the first time it has started its progress through parliament; the most recent attempt was brought to a halt when the general election was called last autumn, but the Bill was reintroduced in February by West Dorset MP Chris Loder.

Mr Loder said: “It is high time as a nation that we take the lead on global standards for animal welfare and hand down tougher custodial sentences for those who inflict the worst kinds of cruelty on innocent animals.

“My Bill, which I’m pleased has cross-party support and is fully endorsed by the RSPCA and other animal welfare charities, delivers a strong message to animal abusers that their behaviour will no longer be tolerated. We need to get it on the statute book and send a clear signal to potential offenders there is no place for animal cruelty in this country.”

The Bill follows a public consultation in 2017, in which more than 7% of respondents were in favour of tougher punishments for animal abuse.

Animal welfare minister Lord Goldsmith said: “There is no place for animal cruelty in this country and this crucial piece of legislation will bring in more stringent sentences for animal abusers who commit the most heinous crimes, cementing our role as a global leader in animal welfare.

RSPCA chief executive Chris Sherwood said the charity is “thrilled” the Bill has passed this stage.

“Tougher sentencing would give courts more flexibility to impose longer prison terms on those people guilty of the most serious offences to better reflect the severity of the crimes and to act as a stronger deterrent to others,” he said.

The Bill will now go to the committee stage, then the report stage and third reading, after which it will go before the House of Lords.

A year on from a serious attack that lead to a horse being put down, fresh calls are being made for tougher sentences to be introduced for animal abuse. H&H finds out more...

A HORRIFIC attack on a horse has highlighted discrepancies in the law, and the need for tougher sentences for animal abuse.

Owner Tracy Grantham is calling for a specific law for attacks on animals, after her 17-year-old mare Sindy was put down on 29 October 2019 owing to injuries sustained when she was targeted in her field by an intruder.

Sindy’s rug had been removed and her injuries included an 11-inch long slash and a six-inch deep wound to her shoulder, believed to have been caused by a knife. Although Suffolk Police investigated the incident, no one was caught.

Tracy has launched a petition for “Sindy’s law” a year on from the incident, as police told her if anyone was caught, they would be charged with criminal damage.

The law states that an animal may be classed as property, under the Criminal Damage Act, and a charge of criminal damage may be appropriate in the event of the death or injury of an animal – with a maximum sentence available of 10 years’ imprisonment in England and Wales.

Offenders may also be prosecuted under section four (unnecessary suffering) of the Animal Welfare Act, but at present, this only carries a maximum sentence of six months. In Scotland, this was increased to five years in jail on 21 July.

“The law is confusing and it’s not clear. There is Finn’s Law for service animals; it’s black and white, and I believe there should be something similar for when someone actively and deliberately harms and kills other peoples’ animals,” Tracy told H&H.

“It won’t bring Sindy back, but we’re trying to be proactive and want Sindy to be remembered.”

The RSPCA has campaigned alongside other welfare organisations including World Horse Welfare, for the Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Bill which would increase the maximum sentence for offences under the Animal Welfare Act to five years.

The second reading of the Bill at parliament, which has cross-party support but has been postponed a number of times, is scheduled for 23 October.

“This bill has not yet become law. Our rescue teams see heartbreaking acts of animal cruelty every day, cases such as the one involving this poor horse, and we feel increased sentences would act as a proper deterrent,” said an RSPCA spokesman.

Roly Owers, chief executive for World Horse Welfare, told H&H that what happened to Sindy is a “truly horrific case”.

“It is totally understandable that the owner wants to help prevent another horse suffering such outrageous abuse,” he said.

“We believe the Animal Welfare Act is a very good piece of legislation but currently only has a maximum prison sentence of six months, which is clearly not proportionate to the horrendous crime inflicted on Sindy.

“This is why it is so important for the Government to see through their commitment to increase the maximum sentence for animal cruelty in England and Wales to five years.”

‘Somebody must know something’: pony seriously injured in brutal attack

A horse has been seriously injured in a horrific attack in his field, two weeks after his owners’ dogs were targeted in a similar incident.

Anji Sanderson arrived at her rented stables in Hambleton, Lancashire, on Saturday (26 September) morning to find her daughter Caitlin’s 13.2hh pony Solis injured.

“Solis’ leg was black with blood and he had a wound at his stifle so deep you could put your hand in it,” Anji told H&H.

“The vet came straight out and said he thought the wound was a few hours old. He couldn’t stitch it because it was so wide. Solis is now on box rest with painkillers and antibiotics.”

Anji reported the incident to the police and believes it was linked to an attack on two of her rescue dogs, Tia and Rocky, at the yard on 17 September. Rocky needed emergency surgery on multiple stab wounds including a seven-inch wound to his body and a four-inch cut to his throat, he also suffered a broken jaw. Tia was badly beaten and needed painkillers for an injured leg.

“Nothing was ever taken so it wasn’t a robbery gone wrong. Somebody somewhere must know something. This is such a rural place you almost wouldn’t know the stables were here,” said Anji. “We’ve never needed CCTV before and the animals have lived here happily for two years. I just feel terrified and my daughter has been inconsolable.

“I hope the police can catch whoever did this – these people need locking up. It’s horrific someone could do this to innocent animals, there need to be harsher sentences for people who do something like this.”

The owner of a horse who had to be put down after she was brutally attacked in her field hopes to change the law on animal related offences so the mare’s death will not have been in vain.

Tracy Grantham’s 17-year-old 15.1hh mare Sindy was attacked in her field at a privately rented yard in Suffolk on 29 October last year. Sindy, who had been bought in 2015 for Tracy’s daughter Amelia, 17, had been out during the day with another mare, Chance.

Tracy told H&H she and Amelia arrived around 6pm to get the horses in for the evening when they found Chance standing with her head down by the stable block, and no sign of Sindy.

“It was silent when we arrived and we’re usually greeted by neighing and a thundering of hooves. For Sindy not to be with Chance I knew something was wrong,” she said.

“We shone a torch and could see Sindy standing in a corner and I saw her rug on the floor. I thought she must have got caught in her rug and hurt herself.”

Tracy said as they got closer to Sindy they could see “copious amounts of blood” coming from the mare’s shoulder.

“She was reluctant to move but we got her to the stable and called the vet,” she said. “Once the vet arrived she sedated Sindy and started to get her cleaned up then asked if she had been wearing a rug and if it was torn.

“I laid the rug out and found the fillet string and surcingles had been undone but the buckles at the front had been cut off with something sharp. The vet said I should call the police; she thought Sindy had been attacked with a knife.”

Tracy said Sindy’s injuries included an 11-inch long slash, a six-inch deep wound, and a piece of muscle had been “carved away”. The mare had to be put down owing to her injuries.

“On reflection we wonder if the horses had been drugged to allow someone to do that to her. There was no evidence of a struggle. I almost hope she was drugged and wasn’t aware of the pain that had been caused to her,” said Tracy.

“The police investigated but the case was closed in February because they had nothing to go on. I believe it was a planned and orchestrated attack but the worst part is not knowing why. We don’t have any enemies, we’re an ordinary family. For Amelia to witness something like that was horrific.”

Tracy has launched a petition calling for ‘Sindy’s law’, to make attacks on animals a specific criminal offence.

“I asked the police what would happen to those involved if they were caught and the police said they would be charged with criminal damage – they could receive the same sentence for damaging a car, there is no specific offence for harming someone’s animal,” said Tracy.

“I have been in contact with my local MP’s office and the hope is to get the petition to 100,000 signatures and take it to parliament. It’s a big ask, but I hope with the power of social media and the horse community we can get there. We had a phenomenal response at the time of Sindy’s attack so I hope coming up for a year on, people will support the petition.”

“As a family we have good days and bad, but you can’t help but think about it. We speak about Sindy a lot and try to remember the funny things about her but then you can’t help but feel sad. It’s the not knowing who did it that drives you crazy and thinking who could do something like that,” she said.

“We might never know who did it but we’re trying to be proactive and want Sindy to be remembered. If Sindy’s law can prevent other people’s horses being attacked then it’s something positive to come from it.”

A spokesman for Suffolk Police told H&H despite a “thorough investigation and all leads pursued” the case has been closed.

Six-inch piece of ‘deliberately sharpened’ wood found deep in horse’s neck

An 11-year-old boy has been nursing his horse back to health after she had to have surgery to remove a “home-made projectile” that was found embedded in her neck.

Vets suspect the wooden object they removed was “deliberately sharpened” and may have been part of a javelin or fired from a crossbow.

John Howard’s 14.3hh mare Wedi (Private Expresso) was initially thought to have been kicked in the field when a small wound was discovered under her left ear on 18 April.

“I had gone to get the horses in and Wedi is usually the first to the gate but when I called them she stayed at the other end of the field,” said John’s father James, who keeps the horse with his daughter-in-law Hannah Tolley near Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire.

“When she eventually came to the gate she was standing as if she was concertinaed. We gave her a look over and there was a small hole in her head — at the time we had no idea how serious it was.”

James said Hannah rang the next day saying they needed to call the vet as the wound had become infected. Although the vet investigated, he had been unable to see anything on scans and X-rays owing to the amount of gas, dead tissue and fluid.

“She was given antibiotics and pain relief but it got to the stage where it wasn’t getting worse but it wasn’t getting better — the swelling in her neck wasn’t going down and our vet, Kieran from Patterson Equine, said the easiest thing was to refer her to the veterinary hospital,” James added.

More sensitive scanning and X-ray equipment at B&W veterinary hospital in Gloucestershire located a foreign body in Wedi’s neck that had travelled around 12” from the entry wound. She required surgery to remove the six-inch spike of wood — which had been in her neck for 10 days — and drain the infection site.

She remained at the hospital for two weeks and has recently returned home, where she is still on box rest as the wounds heal.

“She is quite perky at the minute and is lifting and dropping her head down a lot easier than she was, so she is slowly getting better although there is still dead tissue and discharge from the wound,” said James, who has faced a £6,000 bill for her treatment.

“The vets at the hospital have asked for some pictures to see how she is progressing and we are hoping she might be able to go back in the field for a few hours soon.”

James added that it had been “hard on everyone” but that John had “coped well” with the injury to his horse, who he has ridden for the past two years, and had kept the spike of wood “as a memento, although not a very nice one”.

John successfully competes Wedi at dressage, winning the NSEA grassroots intro championship at Kings Equestrian in December last year, and is a big fan of Carl Hester.

“We are hoping it is just a tissue injury and that Wedi will make a full recovery and go back to competing — initially she was holding her neck at an odd angle but now the swelling has almost gone and she seems to have movement back,” James added.

The family had not seen any suspicious activity near the field before Wedi’s injury but has now stepped up checks on the horses.

“We can’t point fingers as we weren’t there when it happened, so we can’t be certain someone did it deliberately, but the police think it’s possible,” James said.

A spokesman for West Mercia police, which was called after the wood was found, said: “We were called at just before 1pm on 7 May to a report of horse that had been found injured in Tanyard Lane, Ross-on-Wye. It was not possible to determine if the injuries were suspicious or if they occurred accidentally.

“We gave advice to the person who was caring for the horse and our local safer neighbourhood team will continue to monitor the local area.”

A horse who was found “mutilated” in its field had to be put down, after a number of reports of sheep being deliberately injured and killed in the same area.

The attack on the horse, who was turned out in a field near Newport, Shropshire, was reported to West Mercia Police at just after 5.30pm on Friday, 15 March.

“The mutilation of a dressage horse in a field at Tibberton was reported,” a spokesman for the force said.

“A vet said that the horse could not have injured itself and sadly, the animal had to be put to sleep due to injuries sustained.

“There have been recent reports in Shropshire and in Warwickshire of sheep in fields being mutilated and slaughtered.”

The spokesman urged locals to “remain vigilant around your area and report suspicious persons, vehicles or activity to the police”.

A rescue horse has been found “bludgeoned” to death in a vicious attack thought to have been carried out with a metal stake in Yeovil.

Paddy, a skewbald colt, was found tied to a metal gate by a member of the public in a quiet area off Lyde Road, near Pen Mill Industrial Estate, on Saturday morning (16 March).

A spokesman for the RSPCA said the member of public who came across the “horrific” scene alerted the police and the charity after finding Paddy with a head wound and initially thinking he had been shot.

“Further investigations suggest the poor horse was bludgeoned with a metal tethering stake which was found close to the scene – which had blood and horse hair attached to it,” said the spokesman.

Dean Reddin, Paddy’s owner, said he was “disgusted” by the attack.

“I just can’t understand why anyone would want to do something so horrific to a defenceless animal,” he said.

“Paddy was a rescue horse and when I first got him he was really thin so I fed him up and he would happily graze in a field with my partner’s horse Bailey. He was about 18 months old and so content.

“Someone must have come and untethered him and led him away to a quiet place where they carried out this terrible attack. I just hope the sick person who did this is found. I have now moved Bailey away from the area as I fear for his safety.”

RSPCA inspector John Pollock, who is investigating, said: “Someone has deliberately taken this horse from the field where it was kept and walked him down to this secluded location where this horrific and cowardly attack took place.

“It appears he has been hit to the head — possibly a number of times — with the metal stake which was used to tether him.

“The owner is obviously distraught and we are now working with Avon and Somerset Police to find who is responsible.”

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: “We are appealing for anyone who was in the area between midnight and mid-morning Saturday, who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously. A passing car driver, early morning dog walker, someone driving into work or finishing a late night shift may have information to help our enquiries.

‘Fairytale ending’ for pony injured in horrific acid attack

The pony who suffered horrific facial injuries in a suspected acid attack this summer is enjoying a “fairytale ending” to her story.

Cinders, who hit headlines in April when she was found abandoned, with extensive burns, underwent extensive surgery at the hands of leading vets at Rainbow Equine Hospital, North Yorkshire.

Having completed her treatment, she spent time recuperating near the hospital and, having returned to Rainbow last Friday (24 September) for a final check, has now moved to a permanent home.

“There is a fairytale ending,” said Rainbow’s internal equine medicine specialist Dave Rendle. “She will have a very comfortable life at a beautiful country house in North Yorkshire where she will be cared for by some amazing people who are well known to the team at Rainbow.”

Mr Rendle said Cinders has made a very good recovery.

“She has some scarring which has caused some minor distortion around her muzzle and eyelids but this doesn’t trouble her in any way,” he said.

“She is always bright and happy, and is extremely cheeky. She loves human, equine, canine and ovine company and seems to have no issues around new people despite all she has been through. She has put on weight and has no long-term effects from her ordeal.”

After Cinders’ story was first publicised, hundreds of people made donations to her care, which included the use of innovative burns dressings, while all the vets who worked on her, including a specialist who flew in from the US, donated their time and funded their travel to treat her.

Horse suffers deep knife wounds in horrific attack warning: upsetting content

A horse has sustained horrific injuries after being attacked with a knife while grazing.

Domino was slashed in his field near Milton Keynes late on Saturday afternoon (6 May) and vets believe a hammer may also have been used in the attack.

He is being treated for three severe wounds to his face, shoulder and side of his body.

All of these are deep and the facial wound is close to his sinuses.

The attack took place between 5pm and 8.30pm on Saturday, at a field in Newport Road, Woughton-on-the-Green.

“Domino’s owner is understandably devastated and can’t understand why someone would do this,” said RSPCA inspector Susan Haywood, who is investigating the attack.

“Domino is currently being cared for by a vet, who has stitched up the horrific injuries.

“The vet was of the opinion that whoever did this to Domino did so with a lot of force, and all of the wounds are clear cut, suggesting a knife was used.

“Bones in his face were broken too, which has led the vet to believe that a hammer was also used in the attack.”

She added he will take a “long time to recover”.

“Currently he is on pain relief and is being treated for tendon damage to his face, but the vet is hopeful that in time he will get better,” said inspector Haywood.

“We are very concerned that someone deliberately inflicted these injuries on an innocent animal, and we urge anyone who has any information to contact us in complete confidence on 0300 123 8018.”

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police confirmed that they are also investigating the attack.

“No arrests have yet been made,” added the spokesman.

Owner ‘devastated’ after Shetland killed in brutal attack

A Shetland pony has been mutilated and killed in an attack in Sunderland.

The gelding, Bobby, was targeted on 3 November in a field on Cleadon Lane, Cleadon.

Bobby was discovered by his owner between 7 and 8pm.

“The injuries are almost too horrific to mention,” said RSPCA inspector Heidi Cleaver.

“Bobby has been slashed, had an ear and his bottom lip cut off and his genitals severed.

“His mane has also been hacked off and left strewn all over the field.

“This was a very friendly little skewbald Shetland pony, aged around 12-14 years.

“Naturally his owner is devastated.”

Bobby was taken on by his owner four years ago. He had issues with soundness so couldn’t be ridden so was looking for a home as a companion.

“His owner describes him as a happy little pony with a cheeky character,” said inspector Cleaver.

“While he was able to run, he wasn’t as fast as the other horses in the field as a result of his condition, which may have been why he was targeted.

“It’s inconceivable that someone would want to deliberately hurt him in this way. This was a truly horrific incident.”

The RSPCA is now appealing for information.

“If you have any information about what happened to Bobby please call the RSPCA inspector appeal line immediately on 0300 123 8018 and ask to leave a message for me,” added inspector Cleaver.

Two colts slashed in deliberate knife attack

Two colts are recovering from “horrific” injuries after being slashed in their field in Nottinghamshire.

The piebald youngsters, Flash and Rio, were found with large wounds on their hindquarters.

Nottinghamshire Police is appealing for information following the attack, which took place at a yard on Newlands Road, Forest Town, between the evening of 21 August and the following morning.

Danielle Hall, daughter of Flash’s owner Audra, discovered the ponies’ injuries on 22 August when she went to feed Flash.

Other horses had escaped from their fields as gates into a central paddock had been opened overnight.

“Flash had a gash down one side of him,” said Danielle. “I noticed my friend’s horse, Rio, had also been injured.

“I thought it could have been an accident, but when I saw they both had the same injuries I knew it couldn’t be that.”

It took a vet around five hours to stitch up the large wounds of both ponies and the pair are now recovering on box rest.

“It’s a healing process and they’re doing ok,” said Danielle.

“They have been so calm despite what’s happened, but they have been jumpy on certain occasions.”

Danielle added that the help she and her mother have received since the incident has helped them cope.

Well-wishers have sent fly rugs and funds to help care for the ponies.

“We’re so grateful and we’re not taking it for granted,” added Danielle.

“It really has taken a weight off our shoulders.”

Nottinghamshire Police is appealing for anyone with information about the attack to come forward.

“This is a shocking incident, not least for the horses and their owners,” said neighbourhood policing inspector Nick Butler.

“It’s hard to imagine how anyone could be this cruel.

“The injuries caused were horrific and required the emergency treatment of a vet.

Second horse dies from knife attack: police appeal for information

A fresh call for witnesses has been made by police after the death of a second horse following a “cruel and brutal” attack.

Two horses were stabbed multiple times while grazing in a field in Haltwhistle, Northumberland, last month.

Both were treated by vets, but despite their efforts one died shortly afterwards and the second has now also died.

Inspector Kevin Oates, of Northumbria Police, said he has “never experienced anything similar” in 24 years of policing and is renewing his call for information.

“We are continuing to investigate this crime, this cowardly and awful attack on two horses,” he said.

“We have had a good response from the community and have followed up several lines of enquiry from calls received from the public but so far this has not led us to find those responsible.

“We know this senseless crime continues to cause distress to the family and concerns in the Haltwhistle community that someone could carry out an attack of this nature.”

The attack took place between 7pm on 8 July and 10am on 9 July.

Horses stabbed in ‘cruel and brutal’ attack

A horse has died and another was seriously injured in a “cruel and brutal” stabbing.

The pair were “viciously attacked” while grazing in a field in Haltwhistle, Northumberland, between 7pm on 8 July and 10am on 9 July.

Northumbria Police has launched an investigation and is appealing for witnesses.

“This was a cruel and brutal attack on two defenceless animals and we are determined to catch those responsible,” said neighbourhood inspector Kevin Oates.

“Both animals were stabbed a number of times and required two vets to work together on stitching together the wounds. They were surprised the horses were still alive.

“We suspect that whoever could be responsible for such an offence would have been in a group and would have been covered in blood following the incident.”

Despite the vets’ efforts, one of the horses died from the injuries he sustained in the upsetting attack. The other continues to be monitored by vets.

Police are carrying out enquiries to try and find those responsible.

“Anyone who saw the attack, knows those responsible or has any information that could help police should contact us,” added inspector Oates.

Police appeal

In a separate incident, police are investigating after an ex-racehorse was shot at a yard in south east London on 8 July.

Woolfall Treasure, an 11-year-old grey gelding, was found dead by staff at Kemnal Manor Stables near Chislehurst.

A memorial service for the horse is set to take place today (Saturday, 17 July).

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police told H&H earlier this week that officers attended and detectives from Bromley CID are investigating.

Partially-sighted pony seriously injured in knife attack

Police are appealing for information after a partially-blind pony was attacked with a knife in a field in South Wales last week (25 February).

South Wales Police are appealing for witnesses after the two-year-old cob “suffered serious injuries”.

The attack on the pony called Moe is thought to have taken place between 8pm on 25 February and 10am on the following morning.

The pony kept on Mill Road, Ynysybwl near Pontypridd, was out with three other horses at the time of the attack.

The pony suffered injuries to his neck and back.

“We know this incident will cause concern to the local community, in particular those people who own horses, and we would like to reassure them we are doing everything we can to indentify those responsible so that appropriate action can be taken,” said Police sergeant Ben Rowe.

“At the current time, we do not know what kind of motive any person would have to do this or what they were trying to achieve by carrying out this act, however, it is clearly very concerning.”

Man jailed for sexually assaulting horse

A man has been jailed for 14 months after he admitted sexually assaulting a horse in Redenhall, South Norfolk.

Alan Blackman, 31, of no fixed address, admitted attempted intercourse with a horse and trespass with intent to commit a sexual offence.

He was sentenced at Norwich Crown Court last week (23 October).

The court heard Blackman had filmed himself during the attack that lasted for more than an hour.

Blackman said he was high on cocaine and amphetamines and could not remember the incident. He had also consumed large amounts of alcohol.

He was caught on CCTV installed by the horse’s owner, Linda Molkenthin.

Ms Molkenthin realised something had happened to her 21-year-old Hanoverian mare, Lottie, the morning after the attack (7 August).

“There was a water container and a knife in her stable,” she told H&H.

“We checked her over and she looked ok initially. Then we looked at the CCTV and saw he had been in there. We immediately called the vet out to look at her.”

Lottie was found to have suffered severe internal and external injuries.

Ms Molkenheim has owned the mare for 11 years and the pair enjoyed doing dressage together. The Hanoverian is now semi-retired, but was being hacked out prior to the attack.

“I’m so grateful we had CCTV,” added Ms Molkenthon.

Speaking after sentencing, detective sergeant Alison Clabon said: “Crimes such as this are very rare and today’s sentencing will hopefully send out a strong message that this sort of criminality will not be tolerated and the justice system will come down hard on those who feel they can get away with such a horrifying crime.”

Donkey dies following acid attack

A donkey has died following an acid attack.

The donkey from Kent (not pictured), which was reportedly 50 years old, was put down on 19 September due to its injuries.

The RSPCA is appealing for information.

“We were called to help a donkey in Tilmanstone near Dover on Saturday afternoon (19 September),” an RSPCA spokesman told H&H.

“Sadly the donkey was in very poor condition and was put to sleep on veterinary advice with the owner’s consent.”

A JustGiving page has now been set up by campaigner Jack Jones, who used to visit the donkey with his daughter, to raise a reward for information that leads to the arrest of the attackers.

“Somebody [has] poured acid on one of the beautiful donkeys in Tilmanstone,” he said.

“The poor donkey was 50 years old. It was in so much pain it had to be put down the next day.

“Many people are devastated, including my five-year-old daughter who adored him.”

Mr Jones was hoping to raise a £200 reward — however the amount on the crowdfunding page that was set up on 23 September has already passed £730.

A spokesman for Kent Police told H&H: “Although I’m aware of the donkey story doing the rounds, we can see no reported incidents like this on our logs and have searched back from 18 September.

“We have asked the PCSOs who cover the area to see if they are aware of anything, but they are not on duty at present.”

Horse dies after suffering severe head injuries in ‘barbaric’ attack

An investigation is ongoing after a horse died after a horrific attack in Leicestershire earlier this month.

The owners found the filly, a two-year-old chestnut cob called Honey, with serious injuries in her field in Potters Lane, Syston, on Monday 7 September.

According to police the horse had her head “seriously mutilated” in the attack. She died as a result of her injuries.

Three other horses in the field were unhurt.

Owner Claire Watts, who is a McTimony practictioner, told local press that the attack was “barbaric”.

“I could not believe what I was seeing,” she said.

The horse’s right ear plus part of the right side of her face had been cut off. There were also lacerations across her body.

Although pictures of the wounds were posted on social media following the incident, H&H has decided they are too graphic to publish.

The incident is believed to have taken place sometime between 6.15pm on Sunday 6 September and 10.30am on Monday 7 September.

A 28-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday 9 September in connection with the incident, but was subsequently released with no further action taken.

A spokesman for Leicestershire police today (Friday, 18 September) confirmed to H&H that no further leads had been found, but that a joint investigation with the RSPCA was ongoing.

A spokesman for the RSPCA told H&H that a post-mortem examination was carried out and tests are continuing.

She added: “This was a very distressing incident where a horse was killed and endured a vicious attack.

“Anyone who knows or saw anything, no matter how small it might seem, is urged to contact police.

“We are assisting Leicestershire Police in investigating this incident.”

H&H contacted Ms Watts but received no response.

Man admits sexual attack on horse

A man has admitted sexually attacking a horse in Redenhall, South Norfolk.

“Police said we can’t keep her at the old stables,” said Ms Molkenthon.

“Lottie has been very stressed after being moved and has had to endure a lot of examinations as well.”

Ms Molkenheim has owned Lottie for 11 years and the pair enjoyed doing dressage together. The Hanoverian is now semi-retired, but was being hacked out prior to the attack.

“I’m so grateful we had CCTV,” added Ms Molkenthon.

Judge Stephen Holt called for a psychiatric report to be carried out before Blackman is sentenced next month (23 October).

Horrific horse attack sparks 5,000-strong petition

A petition calling for a review into sentencing for animal abusers has already gained more than 5,000 signatures.

The petition to Scotland’s cabinet secretary for justice, Michael Matheson MSP, was started by a member of the public following the news of a horrific attack on a 23-year-old horse in Scotland last week.

The horse, called Blaze, was put down on 17 August after reportedly being stabbed and sexually attacked in a field in Maud, Aberdeenshire.

Maria Lynagh-Verrecchia, who did not know the horse or his owner, set up the petition on 21 August and it received 2,000 signatures in two days.

She said the impact the news and picture of Blaze had on her moved her to act.

“I really expected to be manually sending round emails to people about the petition,” added Ms Lynagh-Verrecchia.

“I would like this to run – this is an opportunity and I don’t think we should let the chance go.”

The “Justice for Blaze” petition calls for an “urgent review” to the law and level of sentencing for animal mutilation and sexual abuse, taking into account pain and suffering to both animals and owners.

It also calls for an increase in police activity and funding for this type of crime.

Currently, the maximum prison sentence for an animal cruelty crime is 51 weeks.

Police Scotland told H&H yesterday (Wednesday, 26 August) that there are no updates on Blaze’s case yet, but enquiries are ongoing.

Last week (20 August), Detective Inspector Norman Stevenson appealed directly to residents in the area who may have seen anything unusual or suspicious to contact police.

“As a result of this cruel act a horse has died and a family have now lost a much-loved animal,” he added.

Blaze’s owner Zoe Wright has offered a £1,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest.

She said that between 9pm on 16 August and 6am on 17 August someone entered the field and stabbed Blaze twice in the chest before sexually violating her.

“My lovely Blaze was the nicest pony, she has been part of our family for 18 years,” she wrote on Facebook.

“The complete low life scum who did this to her needs to face justice for what they have done.”

Ms Wright also called for anyone in the New Pitsligo area to check their horses for suspicious cuts.

DI Stevenson added: “Patrols are carried out frequently in rural areas but we do rely on residents, land owners and people who work in the area to contact us to report anything unusual or suspicious.”

Horse dies after horrific attack in Aberdeenshire

A horse has died after reportedly being stabbed and sexually attacked in Aberdeenshire.

Police Scotland told H&H they are investigating after a 23-year-old horse was injured in the Maud area, near Peterhead.

Blaze (pictured, top) was put down on Monday night (17 August).

Owners believe the attack happened between 9pm on Sunday (16 August) and 8pm on Monday (17 August). They also suggest she had been sexually violated.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish what has happened to the horse but I would appeal directly to any neighbours or residents in the area who may have seen anything unusual or suspicious in the days before this happened,” said Detective Inspector Norman Stevenson of Police Scotland.

“As a result of this cruel act a horse has died and a family have now lost a much-loved animal.”

The pony’s owner Zoe Wright wrote on Facebook: “Someone came into my horse’s field and stabbed my beautiful old girl Blaze twice in the chest before sexually violating her. Blaze was put to sleep after succumbing to her injuries.

“My lovely Blaze was the nicest pony, she has been part of our family for 18 years, the complete low-life scum who did this to her needs to face justice for what they have done.”

She is now offering a £1,000 reward to anyone with information that leads to an arrest.

Horse put down after suspected attack in field

A horse has died in Devon, after what police suspect to be a deliberate attack.

The 16.3hh bay mare was put down after it was found lying in its field with a serious head injury on Sunday (2 August).

Police believe the 15-year-old thoroughbred had been deliberately attacked, though they are “unable to say for certain” what happened to the animal.

The owners of the horse think the attack happened between 6pm and 8.30pm at the property in Chittlehampton, near Umberleigh in North Devon.

Vets who attended the incident were forced to put the horse down due to the extent of its injuries.

However, Devon and Cornwall police told H&H the cause of injury is “still being determined”.

“One thought is that it has been struck with a blunt instrument like a hammer,” a spokesman told H&H.

The police are now appealing for information, and are urging all horse owners in the area to be on their guard.

“Due to the severity of its injuries the 15-year old thoroughbred had to be put down,” police spokesman Steve Grant told H&H.

“We are asking owners of horses and livestock in the area to remain vigilant and to report anything suspicious.

“If any member of the public has any information relating to this crime, please contact police on 101@Devonandcornwall.pnn.police.uk quoting crime reference CR/054196/15.”

Clydesdale mare recovering from ‘sickening’ attack with long sharp stake

A Clydesdale mare attacked in her field last Saturday night (9 May) is recovering from major surgery to remove a two-and-a-half feet long sharp stake.

Skye, a 16.1hh eight-year-old blue roan mare is owned by Annie Rose, who runs Cumbrian Heavy Horses.

“I thought she’d been kicked as she had blood on her hind legs when she came in for her breakfast on Sunday morning,” she told H&H.

“But when I lifted up the tail flap on her rug, I saw the end of a 2in diameter stake sticking out of her vulva.”

The vet and police were called and Skye was taken in a trailer to Frame and Swift equine practice in Penrith for an emergency operation.

“Skye was very lucky the stake didn’t hit any of her blood vessels, otherwise she would have bled to death slowly in the night,” believes Mrs Rose.

The mare is making an incredible recovery, is eating well and walking about in a small paddock.

“The vets think that providing there are no further complications there is every chance she will make a full recovery, but it’s going to be a long time before she is back into work,” said Mrs Rose.

The two other mares and a gelding who were out with Skye the night of the attack were not harmed, but are “very jumpy at the moment”.

Skye was used for lessons, hacks, beach rides and by children with learning disabilities from a local school. She is one of 17 horses kept at the BHS-approved riding centre in the Whicham Valley, in the Lake District National Park.

Mrs Rose only moved to her new base at Baystone Bank Farm in February.

She said the attack had left her “scared for her horses and any other animals this psycho chooses to target”.

RSPCA chief inspector Rob Melloy said: “This is an extremely distressing incident and a sickening attack which has left this poor mare in a bad state and with horrific internal injuries.

“The stick has been removed by vets. Thankfully the horse is still alive and she is now recovering from her ordeal.

“We would urge anyone with information as to what happened in this attack to contact the police or the RSPCA as a matter of urgency on our cruelty hotline on 0300 123 4999.”

Police are appealing for information about a pony who died following an attack with a brick.

The Shetland was hit with a breeze block overnight last week, sometime between 11pm on Tuesday 31 March and 9am on Wednesday 1 April.

The pony, called Taffee, was owned by Danielle Flisher and was the pet of her 17-month old daughter Charlene.

Ms Flisher found the pony on Wednesday morning when she went to Taffee’s paddock in Boxley near Gillingham, Kent.

Taffee had severe head injuries. Reports suggest the pony’s skull was caved in one side and her left eye had come out of its socket. The animal also had a broken leg.

She was still alive when the vet arrived, but was put down due to the extent of her injuries.

Ms Flisher told local press: “I don’t understand how anybody could be so sick. Taffee was a tiny pony. The vet said she was hit over and over again and it looks like it was by more than one person.

“I can’t believe there are people out there who would do this to a tiny, defenceless pony.”

The five-year-old Shetland had a 10-month-old foal called Biscuit, who was unharmed in the attack but according to Ms Flisher is “lost” without the mare.

Kent Police confirmed to H&H that they were investigating the incident.

“Police were called to a report of a horse that had been found dead in a field in Boxley,” said a spokesman. “The incident has been recorded as criminal damage and anyone with any information is asked to call Kent Police, quoting crime reference YY/6371/15.”

A £1,000 reward has been offered by the family for anyone who can identify those involved in the attack.

Police appeal after donkey stabbed 12 times

A donkey has been stabbed 12 times at a farm in Wales.

Cheeky, a 22-year-old donkey, was found with 12 puncture wounds to her legs, abdomen and neck on Saturday (29 November).

Police are now appealing for information to find the attacker.

She was injured overnight between 5pm on Friday (27 November) and 7.45am on Saturday morning.

The donkey was in her stable at Greenmeadow Community Farm, Cwmbran when the attack happened.

“When our staff went to check on her in the morning they immediately realised something was seriously wrong — there was blood everywhere,” Kate Holly from the centre told H&H.

“We called the vet immediately, who told us they were puncture wounds.”

The stable was checked for nails and other hazards, but none were found.

‘We’ve never had anything like this happen here before,” added Ms Holly.

“We have CCTV but we will be stepping up security now.”

Cheeky is one of three donkeys at the farm, which are used to help people to learn how to interact with animals. She has been at the Cwmbran farm since 2006.

Ms Holly told H&H that Cheeky has been “subdued” since the incident and it is not yet known how long her recovery process will be.

“The vet has been out every day, but we’re not sure the extent of her injuries yet,” said Ms Holly.

“She’s been very quiet but she’s eaten a little bit today [Tuesday 2 December] and she still comes to people, which we were surprised by. She’s coping remarkably well considering the circumstances.”

The donkey is apparently Cheeky by name and nature. And she is missing out on a starring role in the farm’s Nativity.

“We have a Nativity every day, with Father Christmas and one of the donkeys, but she’s missed that as she’s still recovering.”

Horse victim of vicious knife attack

A horse was left needing 90 stitches after it was slashed through the neck with a blade in County Durham.

Five-year-old harness racer Tommy was found in his field in Haswell on 4 September.

His owner Alison Cook has said that neither she nor her partner Andrew Blench have any idea who attacked Tommy or why.

She said: “I feel sick, the same should be done to the person who did this to a defenceless animal. I’m not a vicious person, but this is bad.”

Initial thoughts that the horse could have injured itself on barbed wire were quickly ruled out when the extent of the injuries were seen.

A vet from Dunelm Veterinary Group was called out and said had the horse not been found when it was, it could easily have died from blood loss.

“The vet could fit her hand and forearm into the wound, the muscle in his neck probably saved his life. If he had been thinner, the knife would have gone right through,” added Ms Cook.

The horse had a 10-12in horizontal cut, approximately 4in deep and was bleeding heavily on the right side of its neck.

The investigating police officer, PC Kevin Woodcock, said the wound was “horrendous and could not have been the result of an accident. We suspect something like a butcher’s knife may have been used. I have never come across anything so barbaric in my 20-plus years of police service.”

The police are appealing for information to find those behind the attack.

“If anyone has any suspicions as to who was responsible, I would urge them to contact the police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers,” added PC Woodcock.

A second horse in the east Durham area was found with a knife wound yesterday (11 September).

The trotting horse, Chanelle, was in a field about four miles away from the site of the previous attack.

Local press have reported the horse had a 3in gash on her back.

Police are investigating, but cannot say whether the two incidents are connected at this stage.

Traditional show cob attacked at Equifest

A rider whose horse had its forelock chopped off while stabled at a show has thanked the equestrian community for its support.

Samantha Perkins was “devastated” to find her 13.2hh traditional cob, Brogan (pictured top), had been targeted at Equifest on Friday (15 August) at around 3pm.

She added that the attack was “totally out of the blue”.

“I was competing my other horse, Edlington Millie, and was thrilled as she’d done so well and finished sixth,” said Ms Perkins, who has owned nine-year-old Brogan for three years.

“But when I came back to the stable and saw Brogan had no forelock I was shocked and devastated.”

The whole of the cob’s forelock had been slashed away.

“We usually plait up his mane, but as we were giving him a bath later we decided to just put a hood on him,” she added.

“He hates his ears being touched so it would have been terrible for him. Perhaps it was someone with a grudge or just someone being spiteful.”

Ms Perkins felt that tighter security should have been in place.

“He was in a stable near the in-hand rings, which were heaving. The attacker must have just gone in in front of everyone. There was security staff around, but this should never have happened.

“This was my first big show and I’m definitely put off.”

But the equestrian community rallied round — and Supreme Products even stepped in with a false hairpiece for Brogan.

Sarah Turnbull from the company told H&H she wanted to help after hearing about the incident on Facebook.

“The forelocks we had weren’t suitable for a traditional, due to the length and volume needed, so we tried a false tail,” she said. “We plaited it in and it fell perfectly — you’d never know.”

Ms Perkins said she was “so grateful” for the support.

“I actually went into the ring to compete the next day without his fake hair, as I wanted to show I’m not scared of bullies. He finished fourth and I was so pleased.”

Equifest organiser Betsy Branyan said the show had stepped up security this year, after complaints last year, installing CCTV cameras all over the showground for the first time.

“Our major concern is the security of the site and the people on it. We had roving patrols 24 hours a day,” she added.

Man who slashed horse in revenge attack fails to clear his name

A man who slashed his ex-girlfriend’s horse to the bone in a revenge attack has had an appeal against his conviction rejected.

Sebastiano Mauro, a surgical nurse, was sentenced to 5 years in prison after taking revenge on his ex-girlfriend Nathalie Kelderman by attacking her horse.

Jessie, a 10-year-old bay mare, was found bleeding heavily after being cut with a blade in July 2011.

The 45-year-old from Chatteris, Cambridgeshire, was found guilty in April 2012 of taking revenge on Miss Kelderman by attacking her horse and going to her flat equipped for burglary, intending to inflict grievous bodily harm.

Mauro launched a challenge to his conviction at the Court of Appeal in London.

During the appeal Mauro reportedly made a series of complaints about the way his trial was conducted and said that he needed an adjournment so that a potentially key witness could be found and interviewed.

But last Thursday (26 June), a panel of 3 judges ruled against his bid for an adjournment and rejected the appeal.

Judge Clement Goldstone, sitting with Lady Justice Sharp and Mr Justice Irwin, rejected the arguments and said: “This case requires finality and finality it will now get.”

He said the judges had “read and re-read a very substantial bundle of documentation”, but there was no merit in Mauro’s application.

Pony attacked with staples and cigarettes

A 16-year-old pony has been attacked while in her stable at a yard in Hooten, Wirral. She was found to have injuries, which a vet believes to be cigarette burns.

Penny, a 16-year-old Welsh Section B, was found on the morning of 20 January with 6 small, round burn marks on her body — one of which had a staple protruding from it.

When the mare’s owner, Karris Reeves, 20, discovered her, she called her vet, who suspected the wounds had been caused by cigarettes.

“When you smelt them you could smell her fur and skin were burnt,” she said.

“She’s coping remarkably well, but now the hair is starting to fall out the wounds are looking a lot bigger. Infection is a worry, but she’s started on a course of antibiotics, so we have to keep our fingers crossed.”

As there is no CCTV footage and no witnesses, police said there was nothing they could do, however the RSPCA is investigating.

Pony shot with a crossbow in Sussex

The RPSCA and police are appealing for information after a 3-year-old pony was shot with a crossbow in Sussex.

Chesney, a Welsh section A was found last Wednesday (23 October) with a bolt buried 9in deep in his chest.

The pony had been in his field, in East Preston, Littlehampton, when his owner found him with the bolt sticking out of his chest, narrowly missing his vital organs. He was treated by a vet.

Phil Roberts, whose mother-in-law owns Chesney, said it was a “huge shock”.

“Poor Chesney has had to endure so much pain,” he said. “But it is lucky that this wasn’t far worse — the bolt could have easily caused a much more serious injury.

“He is still being monitored as his heart rate is high and there is a risk of internal bleeding but we hope he will be OK.

“We desperately want to find out who did this to stop any other animals having to go through the same ordeal.”

Pony shot in head with crossbow arrow

The RSPCA is appealing for witnesses after being called to a pony with a 20-inch arrow in her face. The society believes it was a deliberate act of cruelty.

Bambi, 10, was spotted by members of the public in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, on Monday (10 June). As she was in distress and it would have caused more damage to have tried to catch her, RSPCA inspector Joanne Taylor recommended that Bambi was left in the field until the owners returned. She was then taken to Churchfield Veterinary Centre’s equine unit.

X-rays showed that the arrow had penetrated four inches deep into the sinuses, but was not fatal. The arrow was removed, and puncture wound stitched up. Bambi is now recovering at home, mostly on box-rest until the wound heals, but she was allowed out into the field yesterday.

The vet in attendance, Bill Black, said the mare was lucky to be alive as the arrow missed vital structures.

Inspector Taylor said: “This was a horrific and deliberate act of animal cruelty on a defenceless animal. The arrow had caused Bambi so much distress, every time she moved she banged it, causing her more pain. It really unnerved her — you could tell she was terrified by what had happened.

“We believe this arrow bolt is likely to have been fired from a crossbow,” she added.

Bambi’s owners, who wished to remain anonymous, told reporters that they were “horrified”.

“We are so upset to think that someone was wandering around the area brandishing a dangerous weapon,” they said.

Sickening attack on Icelandic pony in Scotland

An Icelandic pony in Scotland has had his penis surgically removed following what is thought to have been a “malicious attack”.

The 23-year-old gelding, Hrafn, was found bleeding heavily in his field at Swanston livery yard, Edinburgh, last Thursday (21 March).

His penis was hanging on by the urethra and had to be removed by a vet.

It had been cut with “a sharp metal instrument” in what the vet said appeared to be a malicious attack.

“This was a cowardly and cruel act,” said Hrafn’s owner, who found the gelding and wishes to remain anonymous.

“It is hard to understand how anyone could put an animal through this sort of pain.”

The police and welfare charity Scottish SPCA are appealing for information on the attack.

“Anyone who was in the area of Swanston Road on Wednesday night (20 March) into Thursday (21 March) morning, who noticed any suspicious activity, should contact police on 101,” said a police spokesman.

Senior SPCA inspector John Toule added: “We are urging horse owners in the area to be on guard.”

Masked men attack hunt staff and supporters

Hunts are being asked to report all incidents with antis and saboteurs following attacks by masked men in north Derbyshire and South Yorks — one of which is being treated as grievous bodily harm.

Badsworth and Bramham Moor supporter Charlie Warde-Aldam and High Peak huntsman Nigel Cox were seriously assaulted by suspected saboteurs in separate attacks.

The

15 December after masked men attempted to follow them to the meet.

On the same day three vehicles had their tyres slashed at the Barlow kennels.

“The sabs have a different remit this season,” said Badsworth and Bramham Moor joint-master Vanessa Fleming.

“They seem to be a lot more violent and hugely confrontational.”

Nigel Cox, 59, needed stitches to his head and knee after he was clubbed four times around the head with a Maglite torch and kicked while he was on the floor by two attackers at the hunt kennels on 8 December.

He told H&H: “I really worry when my wife goes to do the horses and half expect to find someone waiting every time I go outside.”

A vehicle involved in this attack was also seen when Mr Warde-Aldam was assaulted during a newcomers’ meet at his home, Frickley Park, near Doncaster, on 27 October.

Mr Warde-Aldam and his 12-year-old daughter Connie were surrounded by 10 masked people and he was repeatedly hit on the head with a heavy torch and punched.

He suffered a broken nose and cheekbone, three fractures to his skull and has lost 90% of hearing in his right ear.

“The attack was carried out in complete silence — it was no chance encounter. They were waiting for us,” said Mr Warde-Aldam.

Eight people have been arrested and bailed in connection with the incident, which is being treated as GBH.

Tim Bonner of the Countryside Alliance said: “The police have powers to ask people to remove masks and we have asked them to use them at hunt meets.”

Mare and foal killed in ‘wicked’ and ‘sick’ attack

Police are warning horse owners in Lincolnshire to be vigilant after a heavily-pregnant mare was attacked in her field – resulting in her death and that of her foal.

The mare, a 19-year-old thoroughbred cross, was discovered by her owner, Graham Worrell at 6am last Friday morning (4 May).

Mr Worrell, 67, of Gate Burton, near Gainsborough, told H&H that at first he thought the mare, called Persian Dream, had started to foal.

“She was lying down, away from the other mares, with a lot of blood around her back end,” said Mr Worrell.

“But when the vet checked the mare, he said she had been attacked. She had been cut inside, mutilated.“

It is believed that the foal died during the attack. “Persian” was taken in to the vet’s but her foal was stillborn the following day and she died soon after.

“I can’t explain how I feel,” said Mr Worrell.

“I bred her myself. It was wicked. So sick and unnecessary. I cannot get over it,” he added.

Mr Worrell, along with his son Rupert, breeds show horses, showjumpers and hunters. They bred Purdy’s Dream, owned by Paralympic hopeful, Emma Sheardown.

Persian, who was in foal to an Irish draught, bred a striking coloured foal by John Whitaker’s coloured stallion, Zilando, last year.

Rupert Worrall told H&H that he is offering a reward of £1,000 to anyone with information.

“I am hoping that in the current financial climate, it will encourage someone to come forward,” he told H&H.

Lincolnshire Police said the attack was a “terrible crime” that had been “devastating” to the owners.

A spokesman said they would like to hear from anyone who saw suspicious activity in the area.

Man slashed ex-girlfriend’s horse in revenge attack

A man who slashed his ex-girlfriend’s horse to the bone in a revenge attack after she ended their affair has been jailed for five years.

St Albans crown court heard how Sebastiano Mauro, 43 – a surgical nurse – used a sharp bladed instrument in the attack, as part of a “campaign of terror” against the mare’s owner, Nathalie Kelderman.

The court was told that Miss Kelderman, 36, ended their relationship after Mauro was charged with assaulting her.

Shortly after being released on bail in July last year, he was caught on CCTV at the livery yard at Bricket Wood, Herts, where Miss Kelderman kept her 10-year-old mare, Jessie.

A groom later found the mare “bleeding heavily” from a wound on her off-hind, which exposed the bone. A vet had to use forceps to stop the bleeding.

Miss Kelderman told the court that Mauro denied that charge, saying to her: “How can you believe that I cut your horse? You know I love animals.”

He was arrested later that day. But after being released on bail – on condition he stay away from Miss Kelderman – he turned up outside her flat, armed with a carving knife, screwdrivers, scalpel blades and empty syringes.

Fortunately, two police officers, concerned he might try to get to her, discovered Mauro yards from Miss Kelderman’s front door.

Mauro was found guilty of a charge of taking revenge on her by attacking her horse and going to her flat equipped for burglary, intending to inflict grievous bodily harm. He was jailed for five years on Wednesday (24 April).

Passing sentence, judge Stephen Gullick told Mauro: “Given that you were on police bail, to then visit the stables was particularly unpleasant.

“You had clearly with you a knife or sharp object and you took out your annoyance on that animal, which was very close to the heart of your ex-girlfriend. It was a particularly nasty offence.”

In addition to passing the five-year sentence, the judge ordered him not to go anywhere near his ex or her horse.

Speaking after the trial, Miss Kelderman said Jessie had made a full recovery from the injury.

Horse found dead with gunshot wound to head

A horse has been found dead with a gunshot wound to the head in South Wales.

The horse was discovered in a field in Markham, near Blackwood, Caerphilly, yesterday (Monday 2 April) at 11am by its owner.

There was a substantial shot wound to the left side of his face and a large amount of blood at the scene.

The RSPCA is now appealing for information about the three-year-old stallion.

“This poor horse was shot at close range, quite possibly by walking over towards someone at the field gate,” said an RSPCA spokesman.

“The owner says that this horse was particularly friendly and he probably went towards the person who shot him.

“His death would have been slow and painful and it’s imperative that we find the criminal who committed this vicious attack.”

Another stallion found dead and mutilated in third ‘attack’

The body of another dead and mutilated stallion has been found in what appears to be the third horrific attack in less than two weeks.

Sammy, an 11.2hh Welsh/Arab pony, was found dead in his field near Whitstone, Devon on Saturday (14 January).

Owner Tanya Ingram told H&H Sammy was missing his right eye, left eyelid and his tongue and genitals had been cut. He was three years old and she was intending on breeding from him.

But spokesman from the RSPCA told H&H: “No foul play is suspected and the injuries are thought to have been inflicted post mortem.”

Devon and Cornwall Police told H&H “this is not a crime” and that he died of “natural causes” – but the owners are unconvinced.

“It does not look like natural causes to me,” Ms Ingram told H&H. “He was fit and well. And the cuts were so clean it doesn’t appear to have been animals. His penis was cut off. We’re just so shocked, it’s so distressing.”

She has 12 other horses on the site. Sammy was the only stallion, and none of the others were harmed.

Last week a two-year-old stallion called Erik was found mutilated near Truro, Cornwall, and on 5 January a seven-year-old stallion Barney was found slashed in Carmarthenshire. Dyfed Powys Police have closed the case, but Barney’s owners also remain convinced it was not a natural death due to the nature of the wounds.

Rewards of £5,000 offered to help catch brutal horse killers

Rewards totaling £5,000 are being offered to help catch whoever mutilated and killed two horses in Cornwall and south Wales.

On Monday (9 January) the body of two-year old Friesian stallion, Erik was found in his field near Truro.

His genitalia had been cut off, an eye gouged out and his teeth had been removed. He had also had his tongue sliced and his mane and tail cut.

Dawn Jewell, Erik’s owner, told H&H she was devastated.

“He was my best friend, my baby,” she said.

A mare and foal in the field were unharmed, but left distressed by the attack, which happened between 4pm on Sunday 8 January and midday on Monday 9 January.

Devon and Cornwall Police are investigating – and have urged horse and livestock owners to be vigilant.

Last Thursday (5 January) a Welsh pony was found dead and mutilated in Ciffig, Carmarthenshire.

Owner Linda Vickerage found the body of seven-year-old Barney when she went to feed him and her other horse, Fella.

Barney had been subjected to a brutal assault. His eyes had been cut out, his mouth and abdomen slit and his ear cut.

Ms Vickerage is offering a £3,000 reward for “information that leads to the prosecution and conviction of whoever did this”.

She added: “Someone who does this to an animal is equally capable of doing it to a human.”

And The Sun newspaper is offering a £2,000 reward to help catch what it calls the “twisted killers” of Dawn Jewell’s mutilated stallion, Erik.

Dead and mutilated stallion found in Cornwall

A dead and mutilated stallion has been found in a field in Cornwall.

The horse’s genitalia had been cut off, his eyes gouged out and his teeth removed. He’d also had his mane and tail cut and his tongue sliced.

Devon and Cornwall Police are investigating the incident. It is thought the attack happened between 4pm on Sunday 8 January and midday on Monday 9 January in the Stithians area, near Truro.

Erik, owned by Dawn Jewell, was a two-year-old Friesian. Ms Jewell was intending on showing him and breeding from him.

“He was my perfect horse, I loved him – he was my baby,” she told H&H.

A mare and foal were left in the field unharmed.

Police and the RSPCA are carrying out enquiries and are urging people in rural areas to be vigilant.

An RSPCA spokesman told H&H: “An RSPCA officer will be meeting with a vet to examine the body and try and establish the cause of death.

“This is a shocking incident and I cannot imagine what would cause someone to carry out such a cowardly and barbaric act.”

Yesterday (Monday 9 January) H&H reported that a pony had been found dead in a field with its eyes missing and its body slashed in Carmarthenshire.

Mutilated pony found in a field in Carmarthenshire

A dead pony with slash wounds to its body has been found in Carmarthenshire.

Owner Linda Vickerage found 7-year-old Barney dead in his field in Ciffig, in the Whitland area, on Thursday (5 January) when she went to feed him.

Barney had reportedly had his eyes removed, mouth slit, ear cut and body slashed open in the attack.

“I grabbed my torch and went to look around,” Linda told local press. “I could see Barney on the ground so I rushed over to him. There was blood everywhere, pouring from his eyes and his abdomen. It was such a shock, it was unbelievable.

“The police arrived but it was dark, so I went back up there on Friday morning and it was just horrific. They had taken his eyes out and chopped part of his ear off and cut him all along his body and removed his internal organs.”

Linda’s other horse Fella was unhurt.

Dyfed Powys Police confirmed to H&H they had attended the scene and that “enquiries were continuing”. A spokesman added they were waiting for more information from the vet.

The RSPCA is investigating. Anyone with information should call 0300 1234 999.

Horse found with throat slashed in Wigan

A Friesian horse has been killed in an attack in Greater Manchester.

The three-year-old, called Arwen, was found dead early on Monday (28 November) morning by its owners in its stables in Standish, Wigan. It is thought that he had his throat slashed.

“Police were called to a farm on Arbour Lane, Standish, following reports a horse had been fatally injured,” said a spokesman for Greater Manchester Police.

“A joint investigation is being conducted by police and the RSPCA into the circumstances surrounding this incident.”

A man has been detained under the Mental Health Act following the incident.

“This was obviously very upsetting for the owner, to find their horse dead in the stables,” said an RSPCA spokesman.

“We will be pursuing this case along with the police and are now investigating the incident, to make sure we get the right outcome.”

A post mortem examination will be carried out.

“We checked the rest of the ponies and they seemed ok, but we found large sections of the field’s outer fencing had been pulled down. We have outer and inner fencing, and we think they’d have tried to take the ponies if it hadn’t been for the inner fence,” said Laura.

“Later that day, at 5.30pm, we could see another a group of boys and girls in the field again, and we chased them down but some got away on quads, and some ran on to the A174.”

Laura shared what has been happening on Facebook in the hope word would spread to help keep the horses and ponies safe.

“At first I didn’t want to put anything about it online, but I felt if more people are aware then there will be more eyes on the horses and ponies. It’s a large 20-acre field and takes an hour to walk the perimeter, and they all live out together.

“The trouble is because the field is on a hill, the group could always see us coming from the bottom and could get away. We hope if people are out walking on the Eston hills and see something happening then they can immediately let us know or phone the police.

“We’ve had lots of support, and people in the local community have been disgusted about what’s happened,” said Laura.

“It’s just heartbreaking, we are a riding school and our horses and ponies are family. They come to us and are never sold, so we have lots of retired or older ones. They should be safe in their own field. We bought the business in 2016, and have never known anything like this.”

A Cleveland Police spokesman said officers attended Eston Equitation and provided forensic, crime prevention, and safeguarding advice and the force’s equine officer will highlight the incidents at this month’s regional equine meeting.

“This is where police forces and partner agencies share information and best practice, as well as discussing problem solving approaches to equine-related crime and anti-social behaviour,” said the spokesman.

“In the meantime, we would appeal to parents and carers to check what their children are doing while out of the house and to stress to them that police will identify and deal with anyone causing harm or suffering to animals.

“We would also appeal for anyone with information to contact Cleveland Police on the 101 number quoting ref 076245.”

“The vet said if the fence had been any higher, she’d have died,” Karen told H&H. “She’d cut an artery too so if we hadn’t found her so soon, we’d have lost her. There was blood everywhere in the field, it was horrible.”

Karen’s son Martyn told H&H the owner of another horse alerted Karen to the fact Millie had broken out. The youths, who must have climbed into Millie’s field as there is no public right of way in it, were chasing her, throwing sticks and stones, and they were caught on CCTV.

“People have come forward since to say they saw them doing it,” he said. “Mum’s devastated. I can’t believe any parent would allow their children out without teaching them about respect, for animals and people.”

Karen said Millie faces a long road to recovery, and that the vet said she should be able to hack out eventually, but any more is unlikely.

“The vet said it was the worst injury she’d seen,” she said. “Millie’s not a horse to run easily so she must have been absolutely petrified. She broke two rails of the fence, and they would have just walked off and left her.

“What makes them think they can throw sticks and stones at a horse who’s just standing there? I can’t comprehend how a human being could want to inflict pain on a defenceless animal.”

“A few people said I should start a page and I wasn’t sure, it felt like begging, but I’m so grateful to everyone who’s donated,” Karen said.

“I just want to raise awareness; people need to know it’s not all right to do something like this. It could have been worse too; there’s an 11-month-old foal in the field and who knows what could have happened to him? It’s beyond words, and people need to understand.”

A spokesman for Northamptonshire Police told H&H: “The people involved have been identified and enquiries into this incident continue to be progressed.”

The sanctuary’s owner Sharon Baker told H&H Tommy, who was in the field with five horses, was discovered by her 19-year-old daughter Madison.

“Madison went to the field and noticed blood everywhere. She found Tommy with blood on his legs and a huge wound on his face. She managed to get hold of him but he was very distressed,” said Sharon.

“At first I thought he must have caught himself on something but on cleaning the wound I thought ‘this looks like it was caused by a knife’.”

A vet arrived to treat Tommy and agreed with Sharon that the wound had been caused deliberately.

“The knife has gone from the outside of his face through to the inside of his mouth and shattered some of his teeth. He’s had stitches and is on antibiotics and lots of painkillers,” said Sharon.

“He’s going to need further vet treatment and dental work but the main thing now is making sure the wound doesn’t become infected. We want to give him the best possible care.”

Sharon said she was “devastated” by the attack.

“Tommy has been with us for three years and when he arrived he didn’t trust anyone. It’s only the last six months he’s built up a special bond with Madison and all that could be undone now. It’s just heartbreaking, this is supposed to be their safe haven,” she said.

“I’m now installing CCTV in the fields, stables and at the gates so every square inch can be monitored 24 hours a day.”

“It’s such a close-knit community here. Everyone knows the horses and our work and is disgusted by what’s happened,” said Sharon.

“I’m so overwhelmed by the donations – we’ve even had some from people on the other side of the world. It restores your faith in humanity.”

Sussex Police is appealing for witnesses or anyone with information about the “vicious attack” to come forward.

“Not only has this been a cruel attack on a helpless animal, it has caused a significant cost to the rescue charity who care for Tommy,” said PC Carlo Leone of the force’s rural crime team.

“We believe this to be an isolated incident but urge all equine owners in the area to review their security and stay vigilant.”
