Celebrity dressage trio Carl Hester, Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro will star in a new documentary on Horse & Country TV next week (Wednesday 14 May).

Carl and Charlotte: Going Dutch follows the two London 2012 gold medallists as they travel to the Netherlands in search of a new equine superstar.

The show coincides with the KWPN stallion show, features footage of Carl riding a fiery 5-year-old stallion and celebrates Valegro being crowned KWPN horse of the year in front of an adoring crowd.

Carl also treats viewers to an insight into his own breeding programme, introducing home-bred future champions such as Euphoria — who is related to both Valegro and Uthopia.

H&C head of programming Jonathan Rippon said that while Carl and Charlotte became household names after London 2012, horse lovers want to discover the secrets behind their success.

“We know there’s a real appetite for finding out more about the lives and work of the pair,” he said. “Carl proved his credentials as a horse scout by seeing the potential in a young Valegro while in Holland 10 years ago, and bring him over to Britain to train.

“So when we heard he was planning another foray to the Netherlands with Charlotte we knew it would make great TV.”

Businessmen behind plans for an equine theme park and a service live-streaming action from top horse events have won a case for breach of trust against the boss of Horse & Country TV, Heather Killen.

A judge at the High Court in London ruled on 27 February that Ms Killen should compensate Toby Vintcent and Richard Worrall of Horseworld Ltd and Horseworld UK Ltd for “poaching” broadcast rights to Badminton Horse Trials.

Ms Killen took a leading role in both Horseworld companies before leaving in August 2008.

She took a controlling interest in H&C TV in December of that year.

Ms Killen later dropped a case against Mr Worrall and Mr Vintcent for non-payment of £430,000 expenses and fees.

The amount of compensation she must pay is still to be decided. They declined to comment.

A spokesman for Ms Killen said: “These matters date from July 2006 to August 2008 and are very remote from Ms Killen’s current activities.”

The winner of Channel 4’s Playing It Straight series, farrier Dean Dibsdall, is to get his own show on Horse & Country TV.

The hour-long show, Dean Dibsdall: Model Farrier, which will be broadcast in April, will follow Dean as he deals with his new found fame while working as a full-time farrier.

Dean, 28, from Leighton Buzzard, also works as a part-time model, winning the title of Mr Bedfordshire last year and representing the county in the final of the Mr England competition.

“I’m very excited to be doing this show with Horse & Country TV,” said Dean, “being a farrier and working with horses is the most important thing in my life.”

Dean has been a farrier for four years, following in a family tradition that has seen three of his cousins become farriers too.

“I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do when I left school so one day went out with one of my cousins who was already a farrier and I took to it straight away,” he said.

“It’s a physical job and you get to work with animals outdoors in the fresh air – plus you’re your own boss.”

E4 viewers saw Dean win the reality TV series Playing It Straight, in which straight and gay guys competed to win the heart of female contestant Cara.

If one of the gay contestants had successfully deceived Cara and been picked by her he would have won the show’s £50,000 cash prize.

But as she chose Dean, one of the genuinely straight contestants, they split the prize, receiving £25,000 each.

A new international equestrian TV network has been set up, which will provide sponsorship opportunities to horse businesses across Europe.

Horse & Country TV, Equidia, and Class Horse TV – from the UK, France and Italy – have set up a new entity, to be known as the Equestrian Sports Network (ESN).

The network will reach more than 35 million households across the UK, Ireland, France, Belgium, Switzerland and Italy.

The stations aim to make content available to each other through the network, and co-produce shows that will appeal to all viewers.

Equestrian Sports Network will offer sponsors of equestrian sports a platform to reach a large, targeted audience.

“The creation of an international network of specialist channels is a powerful step towards realizing the value inherent in the large and attractive audience for horse sports and leisure,” said Horse & Country TV chairman Heather Killen.

“Our three channels together represent a superior consumer proposition and an enhanced commercial opportunity compared with our stand-alone efforts.”

Desi Dillingham MBE, former president of the British Horse Society and vice-president of British Dressage, will join the board of H&C TV Ltd, on 1 October.

Ms Dillingham joins former governor of the BBC and former chairman of the Welsh Development Agency Sir Roger Jones and British Showjumping treasurer Tim Forrest as non-executive directors of H&C TV Ltd.

H&C TV’s chairman, Heather Killen, said: “Desi’s enthusiasm and energy for the equestrian sector are legend. She is a champion of the sport, an advocate for the industry, and a forceful agent for change.

“I am delighted she has agreed to join us in our project to create an international network of specialist channels dedicated to horse sports and leisure.”

A new show on Horse & Country TV, on 12 August at 7.30pm, will give viewers unique insights into the world of Western riding.

“Tales of a Yorkshire Cowgirl” will feature Lou Talintyre, experienced western rider and co-founder of The Pure Feed Company, as she offers insight into the trials and tribulations of breeding, training and competing western style.

This 30-minute one off show will also feature leading Chinese event, and Pure Feed sponsored, rider Alex Hua Tian as he turns his hand to western riding.

Lou Talintyre said: “There is something for everyone in western riding and it was a real experience to see Alex trade his breeches and body protector for western chaps, with surprising results.”

The show has been filmed at various intervals over the last four months at the Mendip Stud in Somerset.

Horse & Country TV has won the “best specialist channel” at the Broadcast Digital Awards.

The channel was short-listed in the category for the second year running and this year fought off tough competition from the Food Network UK and the Horror Channel.

The Broadcast Digital Awards, run by Broadcast magazine, are held every year to celebrate the best in digital television.

In the best specialist channel category entrants are required to demonstrate innovation, creative programming and scheduling, as well as a clear appeal to the specialist audience.

The award was presented on 15 June in London.

The final stages of the 2011 Polocrosse World Cup will be broadcast on Sky Sports and H&C TV after the organisers announced a deal to film and broadcast matches from the competition series.

The Polocrosse World Cup takes place at Onley Grounds Equestrian Centre in Warwickshire (8-17 July).

Sky aims to premiere matches in early September and Horse & Country TV, will broadcast extra coverage from the World Cup on Sky 280.

The competition series will be filmed by the production company Playback Sports, the company that will bring British Eventing competitions to Sky this year.

Joe Metcalfe, Playback Sports said, “We are really excited to be covering the World Polocrosse Championships this year. It’s a great opportunity to highlight what an exhilarating sport Polocrosse is”.

The UK PoloCrosse Association’s Iain Heaton said: “The World Cup is the biggest and best competition of them all, so the polocrosse will be absolutely top class and having TV cameras there will just add to the occasion.

“Obviously it will be best to come and watch the competition live in July but if people can’t make it then it is great that they will have a chance to see the highlights on TV at a later date.”

The competition will also be put onto DVD so that fans can also buy all the action to watch over and over again.

Horse & Country TV has been shortlisted for “best specialist channel” at the Broadcast Digital Awards.

It is the second year running the channel has been shorlisted at the annual awards, run by Broadcast magazine to celebrate the best in digital television.

For the Best Specialist Channel category entrants are required to demonstrate innovation, creative programming and scheduling, as well as a clear appeal to the specialist audience.

The other channels shortlisted in the category are Food Network UK and the Horror Channel. The winner will be announced on 15 June.

Jonathan Rippon, Head of Programming at H&C TV said “Our mix of world-class sport, instructional “how to” formats, and behind the scenes lifestyle programming such as our “At Home with Carl Hester” series is resonating with Britain’s two million horse riders.

“It’s great to receive further recognition of this from our peers and to be in contention with channels run by one of the world’s largest media companies.”

In the same week as the shortlist announcement the Broadcasters Audience Research board released figures showing that during the first quarter of 2011 the channel secured more than one million viewers. This is 20.5% up from the last quarter of 2010.

And 257,000 viewers tuned in during Badminton Horse Trials (21-25 April).

“The BARB data and our nomination for Best Specialist Channel are great news for H&C and reflect the momentum we’re building as we develop a media property for a highly valuable audience that historically has been underserved by television,” said H&C TV chairman Heather Killen.

Rural TV’s programming has been taken down from Horse & Country TV (H&C TV) after seven months of partnership.

The two companies had a broadcast deal of four-hour programming blocks a day, which included Parelli’s Natural Horsemanship.

But H&C TV’s head of programming Jonathan Rippon said that the agreement came to an end on 1 January.

“Our schedule is constantly evolving,” he said. “I’m always looking for new and exclusive sources of programming.”

This will include the UK’s greatest ever polo coverage, a 10-hour series of the Argentine Open, the return of Parelli shows and a new hunting programme, Hounds and the Huntsman, following the Chiddingfold, Leconfield and Cowdray huntsman.

But Mr Rippon did not rule out working with Rural TV in the future.

“We may work with them again, but for now we’ve got a fantastic slate of new stuff,” he said.

Rural TV’s director of international distribution Sarah Chase said that the channel is currently reorganising its business model.

It is off the air at the moment, although has secured a deal with a horse lifestyle network in The Netherlands.

“We are still in talks with H&C TV as well as other channels, and all our options are open,” she said. “In the meantime, we are still available online with 30-day complementary access.”

British Showjumping could be £100,000 out of pocket and British Eventing and British Dressage each £25,000, after Horse & Country TV (HCTV) decided to go into administration.

Each of the disciplines invested in the TV station when it set up in 2006 (news, 20 April 2006) and now that the company has gone bust they could lose their shares.

A letter sent from HCTV to shareholders on Friday (15 October) says: “Since 2009 the company has been largely funded by Hemisphere Capital, which… is owed approximately £400,000 plus accrued interest. Hemisphere has called for its immediate repayment.”

It says the company cannot pay this money to Hemisphere — which is owned by HCTV chief executive Heather Killen — and so would be put into administration.

A spokesman for the TV station told H&H: “The company is being restructured but will continue to run uninterrupted and our TV channel will continue to broadcast.”

When asked whether the disciplines would recoup their losses, she added: “None of the sports will be out of pocket but may have to renegotiate with the channel.”

She said a new company would be created to take over the key elements of the business of the old Horse & Country TV Ltd, which will be placed into administration.

“Our staff and commercial partners will also be unaffected by this move and the new company will be talking to shareholders of the old company (including British Eventing, British Dressage and British Showjumping) about their participation going forward,” said the spokesman.

British Eventing wrote off its £25,000 share in HCTV in 2007. Finance director Wendy McGowan said: “The directors at the time took the view that it was not a profitable investment and it has had no value in our books since.”

Neither British Dressage nor British Showjumping returned H&H’s calls.

But Andrew Finding, chief executive of the British Equestrian Federation, said: “The loss of Horse & Country is sad. We hope progress can be made to keep the channel going.”

HCTV lost £1.3m in the year to April 2009 (news, 28 January). More recent accounts are not available.

It was proposed that HCTV should go into administration on Friday, 15 October.

The TV station was to be taken to industrial tribunal by its former director Nick Ludlow on 18 October, but the case has been put on hold due to the administration.

Mr Ludlow, who set up HCTV, claims wrongful dismissal (news, 28 January).

Chairman of Horse & Country TV Heather Killen is suing the entrepreneurs behind ill-fated plans to create a horse theme park in Warwickshire.

A £60 million attraction, named Horseworld, was planned for Stoneleigh Park, the home of the British Equestrian Federation (BEF) (news, 16 August 2007).

But the project did not get off the ground and Ms Killen alleges she was not paid.

She is claiming £430,000 in expenses and fees from the companies Horseworld and Horseworld (UK) and their directors Toby Vincent and Richard Worrall.

According to a High Court writ, Ms Killen was employed as a consultant and chief executive of the project from February 2007 to August 2008.

Her work included a £25,000 launch at Badminton Horse Trials in 2007 and an application for the centre to be part of an FEI academy.

But she claims she was not paid her £2,000-a-day fee, nor nearly £60,000 in expenses.

Neither Ms Killen nor Messrs Worrall and Vincent wished to comment on the court case.

Horseworld remains listed at Companies House, but it is not clear if the project is still active.

The park would have been part of the BEF’s long-planned National Equine Centre at Stoneleigh, which may still go ahead, BEF chief executive Andrew Finding told H&H last month (news, 23 September).

A date for the hearing has not yet been set.

The channel is up for the award in the best specialist channel category.

Other channels shortlisted in the same category include Sky Arts, MTV Hits, Chelsea TV, Teachers TV and Xmas 24.

Former director of Horse & Country TV (H&C TV) Nick Ludlow is taking the TV station to an industrial tribunal next month, accusing the company of unfair dismissal.

H&C TV made losses of £1.3m in the year to April 2009.

Mr Ludlow, of Alvechurch, Worcs, left H&C TV in April 2009.

Mr Ludlow founded H&C TV in 2007 with help from backers including British Eventing, British Showjumping, British Dressage, Parelli Natural Horsemanship and Matchmakers.

Australian TV executive Heather Killen bought the majority stake in the company in December 2008 and Mr Ludlow was made redundant around six months later.

Matchmakers and Parelli terminated directorships of H&C TV in December 2008.

A spokesman for Mrs Killen confirmed H&C TV had made losses of more than £1m in the year to April 2009 but said figures for the current year would be better.

Neither she nor Mr Ludlow wished to comment on the tribunal, which takes place on 15 February in Birmingham.

H&C TV moved from Stoneleigh to Cwmbran last year with a £400,000 grant from the Welsh Assembly.

Horse & Country TV has hired BBC and ITV professional Jonathan Rippon as its new head of programming.

Rippon will be responsible for commissioning, acquiring and scheduling all programming on Horse & Country TV (H&C TV).

In his 15 years working in the television business, Rippon has been development executive producer for Living TV, deputy head of contect development at ITV and worked for eight years with the BBC.

He said: “I enjoy encouraging people to realise their full creative potential and having had a wealth of experience formulating new ideas, as well as working with major international brands, I intend to combine these elements to take H&C TV forward.”

H&C TV chairman Heather Killen said she hoped Rippon will take the channel to “a new level”.

But earlier this month, the London Evening Standard (4 January 2010) reported that Horse & Country made losses of £1.03m in the year to April 2009 and that advertising revenue had plunged.

Eventing fans will be able to enjoy increased television coverage throughout 2008, via the Sky channel Horse and Country TV.

The first event to be shown on the channel will be Burnham Market International, which is held on 28-30 March.

Also set to be filmed is Houghton International, the country’s newest international horse trials that runs from 22-23 May at Houghton Hall, North-west Norfolk.

The filming at these two events is part of Horse and Country TV’s plan to extend horse trials coverage over the next 12 months.

Nick Ludlow of Horse and Country TV said: “We are delighted to be covering Burnham Market International and to have Houghton International in the schedule.

“Eventing makes great viewing from the precision and elegance of the dressage arena to the accuracy of the show jumping ring and the fast excitement of cross country.”

Horse and Country TV is available on Sky Channel 280.

Horse & Country TV is now broadcasting from a new channel after experiencing problems when transmitting on Solent TV.

The UK’s first TV channel dedicated to equestrianism and the countryside was relaunched on digital satellite channel 295 on 2 July with coverage from the Royal Show.

Equestrian and country television channel Horse & Country TV (HCTV) has launched a competition for would-be programme makers.

HCTV is inviting the public to submit ideas for short documentaries on equestrian or country issues they believe to be important. Selected programme makers will then be given basic equipment and training to film their story.

After a polish by an H&C editor, the programmes will be broadcast on digital satellite and broadband, and the public will decide a winner who will receive a free camcorder (worth £3,500) or the cash equivalent.

H&C moves to Sky

HCTV will be launching on Sky in July after leaving its previous home, Solent TV.

Transmission problems at Solent led to the move and the station will start broadcasting on Sky at noon on Monday, 2 July.

HCTV founder Nick Ludlow said: “It’s been a roller-coaster ride, but to have the official launch date is a major breakthrough.”

HCTV will be free to all viewers with a basic Sky package and will be broadcasting 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
