LeMieux MIMsafe XC Boots

These high-performance cross-country boots are designed in collaboration with MIMsafe, creators of the MIMclip. Engineered for ultimate protection and stability, they are made of materials that radiate shock away from an impact, which is new for equestrian sport. They are made from an ultra-strong outer shell that is a one-piece TPU mould to ensure maximum flexibility and freedom of movement, and offer 360° leg protection and support. The V-cut front profile is designed to reduce friction and drag upon contact with a fence.

First impressions

These boots look really smart, felt super-lightweight, and appear to be well designed with protection in all the right places. I found them a bit fiddly to fit to begin with – to ensure the V-cut front was in the correct position – but after a few attempts I was more confident.

Overview of performance

These boots are seriously impressive, proving themselves to be tough and hard-wearing. I’ve used them for nearly a year on the cross-country course, for fast work on the gallops, and even in the sea.

I tested both the front and hind boots in size medium on a 15.2hh Irish Draught mare, and they were a great fit. My mare is super-sensitive but didn’t experience any rubs or slipping, and I believe her legs stayed cooler than in her previous cross-country boots. They were very secure and didn’t move at all.

Being so lightweight and having plenty of features to prevent them hindering movement, combined with the level of protection offered, gave me peace of mind whatever discipline we were doing.

I liked how they offered all-round protection while staying so lightweight. They didn’t hold water and have cleaned up really well even with regular, long-term use.

You can’t get away from the fact that these boots are expensive, so if you’re not planning to use them frequently you might be better off with a more affordable option – however, they’re excellent quality, definitely one of the best cross-country boots I’ve tried, and if you’ll get the use out of them they are a great investment.

Verdict

Super smart boots with plenty of technical features and materials that gave me peace of mind as they really keep my horse’s legs protected and cool. These boots are pricey, but a worthwhile investment for the competitive rider.

Woof Wear UV Fly Mask With Ears review

The first thing I noticed when I unboxed the Woof Wear UV fly mask was that it felt more cushioned and spongy than the other fly masks I was testing of a similar style. On looking at the product description, I found this was “soft and stretchy 3D Spacer Fabric” that eliminates rubbing. I can really see how it will work – and it appears to be very breathable, too.

The nose is available to purchase separately from the mask, which means you don’t have to opt for one, but if you do it’s detachable so you can always change your mind. The nose attaches with Velcro quite simply and there’s a cushioned flap that folds over the join to prevent rubbing. I would say you need to be careful that this is folded down as I only realised mine wasn’t when I came to look at my first batch of pictures for the review.

The nose, like the rest of the mask, offers 60% UV protection. This is a nice addition, especially if your horse has a pink-skinned nose. I found this to be the perfect length for Utah – it covered as much as possible without be too long that it dragged on the ground.

When I came to get him in, the nose had bent up because Utah had been eating from his hay box. It occurred to me that because of the way the fabric holds its shape, it wouldn’t be able to right itself. This wouldn’t cause a problem, but you would lose the protection until you returned to fix it. I did think, however, that if you were to feed your horse in the field, to avoid removing the mask you could bend the nose up to prevent it getting dirty and then fold it back down once he’s finished.

The mesh that covers the eyes is really fine and offers UV protection. Being so fine, it appears to be easy to see through and it will keep out even the smallest of midges. Although fine, it feels robust and your horse would have quite a job to cause damage to it.

I had a size medium – I usually select cob-sized items – and it fits well. Utah did manage to remove it, however, as did his fellow livery (Patrick, the Highland pony). I suspect if a horse who was more gentle wore it, they’d easily keep it on.

It is at the more expensive end of the market as fly masks go, but it lasted really well, has a nice fit and appears to be really comfortable, which makes it worth the extra money. It would think it would definitely last the average horse more than one summer at least.

Verdict

H&H Approved – This fly mask is really well designed – the materials are high quality and feel like they’ll be really comfortable. I’d definitely recommend this mask.

I liked the overall look of this Hy Mesh Half Mask – it’s quite similar in style and colour to the WeatherBeeta Fine Mesh Mask and the Woof Wear UV mask. The Hy mask is also available without ears, with just ears (no nose/fringe), or with ears and a nose – so there is plenty of choice to find the right combination for your horse.

I tried the Hy Mesh Half Mask in a cob size. My pony, Utah, is 13.3hh but has quite a chunky head. I tested all the fly masks in cob or medium sizes and found this one ran the smallest. It didn’t quite meet under the chin and it fitted quite close to his face. It is slightly elasticated at the poll to help aid fit, which was good to see.

Of all the fly masks I tested, I think this one had the closest fit to the face – although the mesh was darted, I found that Utah’s eyelashes kept poking through the mesh when he blinked. I tried the same mask on my friend’s Morgan horse and this wasn’t the case due to a different head shape – I’d say this mask is more suited to the finer head, rather than a cob with a broad or chunky head. The ears are soft and unlikely to cause any rubbing, but may be damaged if caught in a hedge.

I really like the detachable nose fringe. While it doesn’t offer full coverage, there’s no danger of it becoming bent up and it’s less likely to be damaged than a nose that’s too long.

This fly mask doesn’t have a forelock hole – and with such a big forelock Utah could really do with one – so this is something to note if you prefer the forelock to be out.

I put this mask through the washing machine and it came up clean aside from hair stuck in the Velcro and brow padding, which prevents rubbing.

Utah did manage to get this mask off quite quickly, but so far the Morgan hasn’t managed this.

Verdict

This was a good fly mask although it’s suited to a horse with a finer head. Having a nose fringe is a great option for horses with a shorter nose, too, as it’s less likely to become damaged.

WeatherBeeta Deluxe Stretch Bug Eye Saver With Ears

This WeatherBeeta Lycra fly mask fared much better than I first expected. Before trying this mask, I never would have considered this style of mask, but I am totally converted (as is my friend I’ve since lent it to). As with the Premier Equine Lycra fly mask, I just didn’t think this style would live up to my horse’s field antics – for example, Utah uses his head to roll his large hay box across the field every day without fail. However, I’ve been proved wrong so far.

This mask is quite smart to look at. I really like the navy and it comes in seven other colours (grey, red, royal blue, turquoise, green, black or purple) as well as a cute bee print, which is rather fun. It offers 98+% UV protection in the Lycra areas, which is the highest of all the fly masks we’ve tested.

This fly mask is different to the Premier Equine Lycra fly mask in that it has a zip. Utah isn’t fussy around his head so I found it easy to put on, but if you feel the method of fastening will be considerably easier or more difficult for your horse it could be a game changer. There is also a Velcro tab that covers the top of the zip, preventing it from getting caught or coming undone, and there is a slightly padded guard on the inside to prevent any rubbing.

The eye areas offered good clearance, which I find is a real benefit of these Lycra style masks. The mesh holes are quite big, but if you don’t have a problem with tiny midges (we don’t here) then this isn’t an issue. It also has a forelock hole, which is certainly advantageous if your horse has a forelock even half the size of this one.

I had a cob size, which fitted well. I would say it was very slightly larger than the similar Premier Equine mask. Despite only being 13.2hh, Utah has a comparably large head. The ears were a rather large, but I expect most horses who wear cob size will have larger ears than him and fill them much better.

This mask was the only one with a handy tab to hang it up. It’s not an essential fly mask feature, but definitely handy if you wanted to leave it outside your stable for someone else to put on in the morning, for example, so I thought it was worth a mention. It also washed well and dried very quickly. Because of the material, hair doesn’t get stuck to it, which was a real bonus for me.

Utah did have a go at getting this fly mask off and eventually succeeded. The only reason I can think of that he got this one off but not the other, which is a similar design is that this one is slightly larger.

When you compare this WeatherBeeta fly mask to the Premier Equine fly mask, the WeatherBeeta offers more UV protection but has a higher price point. If the UV rating is important to you or you think the zip will be advantageous then it’s worth the extra money. They also have different hems – the WeatherBeeta has an overlock hem, while the Premier Equine one has a double-rolled hem.

I leant this fly mask to my friend with a Highland to make sure it was given a thorough test over the summer – and it’s lasted fairly well, staying on longer than the WoofWear fly mask that they also tried, which was a very different style. It did get ripped around the eye thanks to a playful field-mate, but was easily sewn up and hasn’t caused a problem since. It also seems to have kept its shape and stretch.

Verdict

This WeatherBeeta Lycra fly mask is a great option. It kept the flies off my horse’s eyes and he appeared to be really comfortable in it. I’d definitely recommend it.

WeatherBeeta ComFiTec Deluxe fine mesh fly mask with ears and nose H&H Approved

This fly mask from WeatherBeeta is available with a variety of ear and nose combinations, which allows you to find the perfect option for your horse.

The mesh is very fine and much smaller-holed than the WeatherBeeta Lycra fly mask. While the ears are made of a soft material to prevent rubbing, the remainder of the mask (aside from the ears and eye mesh) is made of a tougher material that I think will be more resistant to damage if it’s caught on a branch, for example.

The poll is elasticated – more so than the Hy Half Mesh Mask, which is of similar design – and this aids the fit. There is soft padding around the brow, too, which prevents rubbing. It also has a forelock hole, which I think is a real bonus. It doesn’t quite sit closed on top of the forelock, however, if you don’t use it.

The Velcro fastenings are strong without being difficult to detach, and they have small tabs on the end to make removal easier. These are a small detail, but I really like them – especially if the mask fits so that the whole of the Velcro is attached.

As soon as I put the mask on, Utah unsuccessfully attempted to remove it. This is the only mask in this style that he hasn’t yet removed at least once.

My friend’s mare continued to test this mask to see how it lasted over the summer. You can see here that the nose is a great length – it covers just enough without dragging on the ground. The ears are too large for both horses but this is preferable to them being too small.

The mask is priced in the mid-high end of the market, but it’s well designed and if it lasts – and it looks like it will – I think it’s good value.

Verdict

H&H Approved – This WeatherBeeta ComFiTec fly mask fits well and has a few handy details that put it a step ahead of many of the other fly masks we’ve tested. And it hasn’t come off once. I’d recommend this to anyone who wants their horse’s forelock to be out.

The Equilibrium fly mask came in a handy clear packet with a zip that can be used for storage. I tested the version with ears, but it’s also available without ears if you prefer.

I liked the fact it included a page of instructions for fitting the mask, including familiarising the horse with it as I can understand that a horse who had not worn a mask before might be frightened by one suddenly being put on.

Our horse, Alfie, has worn a similar mask to this for many years so we were able to pop it on easily without lengthy familiarisation.

The mask is made of black gauze, with orange trim (there is also a grey option with yellow trim available). There is a hole for the horse’s forelock. It fastens at the back of the throat with a hook and loop strap and the part that goes over the poll is also an openable strap, which isn’t a feature of any other fly masks we’ve tried. As Alfie isn’t worried about having a mask put on, opening this is unnecessary and we left it shut after the first time, but it does open up options for a horse who is more nervous.

The mask feels lightweight and fitted well when we tried it on. There are thick strips of padding across the forehead and nose, which should make the mask comfortable and also serve to hold the mask well away from the horse’s eyes. Alfie, a 15.1hh Connemara, tried a medium size.

Alfie seemed comfortable wearing it and carried on as normal in his field, including lying down.

We found two downsides within a week of starting to use it. The first was that Alfie got one of his ears out of it twice.

The second downside was that on the fifth day of use, we noticed a hole had developed on the cheek.

This fly mask does, however, have 70+% UV protection, which is certainly a positive and about average of the brands that declare their rating.

After eight weeks use, there is a larger hole in the mask on the cheek. The other negative is that the velcro over the poll has rubbed Alfie’s mane a bit, which isn’t much of a problem as he has a thick mane and we cut a bridle path, but it might be more of an issue on a horse with a thinner mane. On the upside, the mask has washed well and the ear escaping has proved to be an infrequent problem.

Verdict

This is a lightweight mask which fits and washes well and the horse seems comfortable wearing it. It is not the most hard-wearing as a hole developed on the cheek after only a few days’ use and a larger hole was evident after eight weeks of wear, plus it did rub the horse’s mane slightly over the poll.

Premier Equine Comfort Tech Lycra fly mask

The Premier Equine Lycra fly mask was the first of this style I’ve tried on my horse, Utah – he’s known for rolling his hay box around the field and putting his head through fences that he shouldn’t do, so I always thought they wouldn’t be tough enough. However, of the fly masks I’ve been testing recently, this one is my favourite – and I’m sure Utah likes it, too, because he’s not put as much effort into removing this one as he has others.

After I bit of fiddling and adjusting the first time putting it on, I found it to be quick and easy. Utah isn’t fussy at all round his head but as it has no fastenings you should be able to slip it on quite quickly if your horse is. No fastenings means it’s not adjustable, but as the mask is Lycra and naturally close fitting this is no problem. It’s most similar to the WeatherBeeta Deluxe Stretch Bug Eye Saver – the main difference is that the WeatherBeeta mask fastens with a zip under the chin.

When I put it on, I immediately noticed how much room he had around the eye – and I was really quite impressed. While some fly masks tend to sit just away from the head, this one stood away from his face and really gave him space. The mesh holes are larger than the other style of fly mask, which I found had a finer mesh in general. The holes are exactly the same size as the WeatherBeeta Lycra mask. I would say this is plenty large enough to keep out all flies – it might only be a problem for you if you’re in an area with the really tiny midges.

Utah has quite a large head considering he’s only 13.2hh, so I tried a medium size. This seemed to fit well – the Lycra was stretchy and I think I could have squeezed him into a smaller size if I wanted to, but this seemed comfortable. It has a forelock hole, which is great news if your horse’s forelock is anything like Utah’s. The ears were a bit long for him, but I expect most horses wearing a cob-sized mask will have larger ears than him.

The mask is lightweight, but tougher than I expected – similar in thickness to a standard single-layer swimsuit. The seams inside are flatlock and haven’t rubbed him – he’s got quite a thick coat and isn’t very sensitive, but I would feel confident using this on a more sensitive horse. It also offers 70% UV protection (on the Lycra parts), which is about average for brands that declare the UV protection.

Another real benefit of a Lycra-style fly mask is that it fits on nicely under a grazing muzzle or turnout headcollar.

The Premier Equine Lycra fly mask is available in six colours – green, blue, navy, red, grey or wine. I loved the light blue as it really suited him and was easy to find in my box of turnout rugs and bits I keep in his field. It has washed well, especially considering how filthy it was – and it dried quickly.

Considering that Utah rolls his hay box from one side of the field to the other every day, I am pleased to say that this fly mask has remained in tact throughout the test. He also hasn’t managed to get it off once – this is probably a combination of him feeling comfortable and it being tricky to remove as I can tell he’s been rolling around in it.

When you compare this fly mask to the similar WeatherBeeta fly mask, the WeatherBeeta offers more UV protection but has a higher price point. If the UV rating isn’t so important to you or you don’t think the zip will be advantageous then it’s not worth the extra money for you. They also has different hems – the WeatherBeeta has an overlock hem, while the Premier Equine one has a double-rolled hem.

Premier Equine products usually tend to have a higher price point compared to many other brands, but this particular fly mask was one of the cheapest we tested – so I’d say this is great value for money.

Verdict

H&H Approved – This has become my go-to fly mask and Utah will be wearing it for the rest of the summer. I’d recommend this to anyone who struggles to keep a fly mask on.

QHP Q-Cross Technical Eventing Boots

I was really impressed with the vibrant and diverse colours the QHP cross-country boots were available in – perfect for matching to cross-country colours.

On first impressions I thought these boots looked quite basic – so I was surprised by the higher price point especially in comparison to some other boots on the market. They felt more like a brushing boot than a more substantial and technical cross-country boot – I would have expected slightly sturdier fastenings and more breathable material.

However, the boots fitted well, provided ample protection to the tendons and remained firmly in place while out on course. While they didn’t hold any water, they gathered a fair bit of dirt from a sandy course but this brushed off well.

They survived wear and wash really well, staying bright and vibrant. They stored neatly in pairs, too.

I used a medium front and back on a 16.3hh Irish Sport Horse. I think they measured up well and I wouldn’t have wanted them any longer or shorter.

Verdict

These boots performed really well and did their job effectively. They protected my horse’s legs while looking smart and remaining firmly in place. I would recommend these to someone who was looking for a pair of cross-country boots available in a range of colours.

Equilibrium Tri-Zone Impact Sports Boots

On first impressions, I wasn’t overly keen on the honeycomb aesthetic of these boots and the owner of the horse I was using to test the boots mentioned she had previously had trouble fitting a pair of Equilibrium boots on the gelding. However, as soon as we put them on, we was pleasantly surprised with the fit, quality and how lightweight they were. They are similar to the Tri-Zone All Sports boots, but offer much more protection.

When out eventing, the straps were strong and durable, so I didn’t feel the need to tape them, which I often would do to ensure they don’t come undone. After completing the course, the boots hadn’t moved, slipped, rotated or rubbed my horses legs at all and they still felt nice and snug. They also didn’t hold any water, which I was really pleased about because I wouldn’t want a boot that holds extra weight. The vinyl strike pad felt like it would provide ample protection to the tendons, whilst being supple enough not to restrict her movement. This isn’t solid in the same way that other boots are, but it definitely felt protective.

The boots washed very well at 30° and dried looking as new. They store neatly in pairs. There is a small colour selection for these boots (black, white, red or blue), which worked for me as my colours are blue and black. The boots were £150 for a full set, which are the most expensive of all the boots I’ve tested, but I would say they are worth the money and lived up to their price point.

I used a medium front and back on a 16.3hh Irish Sport Horse – they were the perfect length to protect his tendons and the Velcro did up neatly around the leg.

Verdict

Overall I really liked the Tri-Zone Impact Sports boots. I couldn’t really find any faults with them and would highly recommend to anyone wanting a higher budget smart, protective boot for cross-country or other activities where the legs needs protecting.

On first look at the LeMieux Carbon Air XC boots, I found them to already be soft and supple, which meant I was less worried about the likelihood of them rubbing my sensitive horse’s legs.

They are very lightweight and I found them easy to put on, and the middle strap is elasticated to help with this. The strike pad sits neatly against the leg and the boot offers full tendon protection. I liked their simple design – the discreet black, grey and red detailing is smart and clean looking. I also liked the design of the vent panel. The Velcro straps are single layer, which made me think they might not be as strong as others that had leather uppers, such as the Mark Todd cross-country boots. However, they were really easy to do up/undo as they weren’t too sticky, which is great for taking them off quickly at the end of a round. I didn’t feel the need to tape the boots either, which I would normally do.

After completing a cross-country round, the boots had remained in place – not slipping or twisting at all – and were still protecting all the key areas. They hadn’t retained much water and weren’t too dirty, either. I was worried that sand or dirt would stick to the vented areas or go into the gaps, but this didn’t seem to happen too much, which was good.

They washed very well at 30° and have come out looking really smart. They also store extremely neatly in pairs. The boots are only available in black, however this wouldn’t bother me as they look really smart. The total price for a set was around £105, which is mid-market and for the quality, protection and feel of the boots I think is a very reasonable price point.

I used a medium front and back on a 16.3hh Irish Sport Horse – they were the perfect length to protect his legs correctly and the Velcro did up neatly around the leg with no gaps.

Verdict

I felt these boots were great value for money. I would love it if they were slightly more breathable all round rather than only where the vented detail is, but I expect this would compromise their level of protection. I would recommend these boots for people wanting a smart set of XC boots, with a good level of protection and a sensible budget.

This headcollar has a really lovely soft and padded headpiece and noseband.

Overview of performance

We had a full size, which was adjustable and fitted all the horses. This was a nice headcollar and did its job, lasting really well. It looks smart, but I prefer leather for shows so this made it a go-to at-home headcollar. It had good catches — previously I’ve found some this style before to break, but these ones have stood the test of time so far. Despite continued daily use, it has stayed looking good and the stitching has remained in good condition.

This headcollar did its job, has stayed in great condition and was fantastic value for money — it’s hard to fault.

This headcollar looks really smart and has a really nice padded headpiece. I thought the part-leather and part-nylon style was interesting — it’s a good way to compromise on the expense of a fully leather headcollar — but it looks very nice.

Overview of performance

This headcollar was suited to wearing to competitions as it’s so smart, and I found it good to use when tying horses in lorry for long time. All the leather areas are padded, which is great, and it has a very wide headpiece, which looks really comfortable. It fitted all the horses well and has lovely detailing. It wore well and is really well made. The clip rotates, which for me is really important.

First impressions

I liked the style of this headcollar — it was subtle with no branding and it looked really smart. Parts of the headcollar look like leather but aren’t, which isn’t a bad thing as I think it helps keep the price down and maintain good value.

Overview of performance

It had a lovely headpiece with padding almost like a poll guard. It’s not a traditional shape, but I thought it looked kind and the horses seemed happy in it. I have used this headcollar a lot for travelling and will definitely continue to do so.

Overview of performance

This headcollar was great for everyday use. The padding was not overly thick, but it was still cushioned, which was a good happy medium. It was slightly larger than I was expecting for the size, but it fitted well and was adjustable. This would be great for a horse with a sensitive poll. Overall, it’s a good, nice-looking headcollar, but I can’t say I noticed any difference with the Welltex fabric.

I liked that the clip swivels so you can put to outside as that’s the way I prefer it.

I was confused by the style at first as the clip doesn’t clip on to leather bits, but I have since learned that the leather loop on the ring is a replacement in case the leather loop that attaches to the headpiece breaks. This is handy in that you don’t have to replace the whole headcollar, but I was still a bit confused about how it all worked.

Overview of performance

The headcollar fitted nicely and had good squidgy padding inside the whole way around. It’s smart to look at and I liked the colour contrast. This headcollar was used daily and stayed looking smart. I don’t like to turn out with headcollars on, so I can’t comment on how well it works in the field.

I didn’t like that the clip goes to the inside unless you twist throatlash.

Verdict

Handy if your horse has a tendency to break his headcollar or wears it in the field.

This saddle pad was forward cut, lightweight and straightforward — it looked to be a useful all-purpose pad.

Overview of performance

This product performed very well throughout the time I tested it. The smaller D-ring straps are perfect for a close-contact saddle or a mono flap. It’s a nice shape and fitted all of the saddles I tried it with. It wicked any moisture away quickly, had a lovely high wither and provided enough cushioning.

I liked the simplicity and all-round purpose of this saddle pad. It has a good shape and I liked the mono-flap D-ring attachment. It’s a really great value saddle pad.

It was smart yet practical, and performed really well. I liked that it’s suitable to wear for best as well as every day. It was one of the more expensive in the test, but it’s great performance makes it really good value.

My only concern was that it didn’t have an attachment loop at the very front of it – but it never slipped so it may not be necessary. It washed well, too.

Overview of performance

This saddlecloth had good clearance at the withers. It didn’t offer much cushioning underneath the saddle, but assuming you have a well-fitting saddle this shouldn’t be a problem. It wicked away any moisture, making it very straightforward when coming to brush or wash the horse off after exercise. It moulded well to each horse and never slipped or moved while in use. It is, however, quite thin and I felt it could have provided more cushioning.

I liked how quickly it wicked away moisture. It was, however, quite expensive in comparison to the others in test.

Verdict

I would recommend this as an everyday thin saddle pad.

First impressions

It looked lightweight, had good clearance for the horses withers and plenty of grip for the saddle to stay on.

Overview of performance

I found that this saddlecloth was quite fixed on the horse — it never moved or slipped. It had good aeration and was really breathable, but did leave marks on the horses coat that were consistent with the shape of the dimples underneath the saddlecloth. I thought it may be slightly uncomfortable on the horses’ backs for long periods of time, but I tested this saddlecloth over a few months on different horses and they never showed any signs of discomfort. It was very hard wearing and washed very well, never losing its shape or condition.

Harriet’s likes and dislikes

I liked how secure the saddle pad was, but did feel it created uneven pressure underneath the saddle with the grips as it wasn’t a smooth, flat surface.

Verdict

This wasn’t my favourite of the saddle pads I tested, but it was really secure and lasted well.

This headcollar fitted well — it was full size, but plenty large enough for my horses’ with bigger heads. It was easy to adjust, with buckles on both sides of the headpiece, and it came up really nice when cleaned.

First impressions

I thought this one was very smart and I really liked the style — I couldn’t wait to use it and actually used it a few times before the pictures were taken. It was by far the most expensive headcollar I tested, but I thought it looked well made and robust.

Overview of performance

It fitted my horses well and was easy to adjust. However, the patent on the noseband quickly became scuffed — of course, cleaning does not resolve this — and so it looks old before its time.

Tamsin’s likes and dislikes

It’s beautiful, but not practical to use on a day-to-day basis if you want it to staying looking new.

I would only recommend this for special occassions.

The headcollar fitted well from the start, but was better after use when the leather softened — I think it probably got more comfortable with time and conditioning, too. It could be adjusted on both sides, which was really handy, and it stayed looking new and smart.

This headcollar was beautifully stitched and the simple design made it really easy to use.

Overview of performance

I had a full size, which was a little bit small for some of my horses, but they are all big warmbloods. The headcollar had an adjustable noseband, which was handy. It wasn’t padded or shaped, but I don’t think it was uncomfortable. It aged with use, but not too much and was still smart.

First impressions

This headcollar looked smart and I liked padded noseband and headpiece, but I did find that the horses sweated more in this one.

Overview of performance

This headcollar fitted well and was easy for day-to-day use. It was easy to adjust at the headpiece and noseband. This one didn’t stay looking new for as long as some of the others tested.

Tamsin’s likes and dislikes

I found the trigger throat clip useful for some horses as it was quick and easy to release. I wouldn’t use this in hot weather as they horses tended to sweat under the padding.

Verdict

It was a good shape, fitted very well and had plenty of adjustment space. It was easy to put on and take off — the Velcro was very strong, but this meant very secure. It offered good protection and kept tails very clean. It was good quality, washed well and stayed looking new.

I liked the simple, easy-to-apply design and it did exactly the job intended. It fitted the tail really well and was great value for money. I can’t think of any way to improve it — I would definitely recommend it as it was the best I tested.

It looked very well cushioned and like it would offer good protection, although I was worried that it may slip down.

Overview of performance

The guard fitted well and was a good shape, but was bulkier than the others in test. It was very well padded and cushioned. The elastic on the straps was ample and enabled a good, secure fitting for all shapes and sizes, plus it was easy to take on and off. This tail guard did not include a tail bag — if it did, it would have certainly received full performance marks if it kept the tail clean — but it did keep the top part of the tail clean and protected. The tail guard washed well every time and stayed looking new.

Harriet’s likes and dislikes

I liked how cushioned and padded it was and that, despite this, it never slipped or moved while being worn. It’s very well made, is extremely good value for money and offers a no fuss, basic level of protection. It’s a shame a tail bag isn’t included in the design, but for the bargain price of the guard, you can’t go wrong.

Verdict

It fitted well and was a very good shape — it fitted very neatly and was a smooth, streamlined fit. In general it offered good protection and the tail guard kept their tails very neat and tidy — my only criticism was that it didn’t go as far down the tail bone as others I tested had. It was very good quality and had plenty of adjustment available in the straps. It washed very well and stayed looking new.

Harriet’s likes and dislikes

I really liked how neat it kept their tails, alongside offering very good protection. The slightly shorter tail bag kept their tails up and out of the way of their legs, which was great if they were particularly messy while travelling. If I was being fussy I would make the tail guard marginally longer at the top. I would definitely buy this again and would recommend it — it’s an excellent product that offers great protection and kept tails very clean.

I thought it looked robust, simple and easy to apply. It looked well made and like it would offer good protection, although I was slightly worried that the guard would not be long enough on the tail bone.

Overview of performance

It fitted well in general, although it’s quite short on the tailbone as I expected. It was a good shape but I wasn’t able to adjust the size very much. It was easy to put on and take off. It offered good protection and had a lovely fleecy lining, but I would have preferred the guard at the top to have been longer. It kept tails very clean and I really preferred having a shorter tail bag, as it created less mess around their hocks. It washed well.

Harriet’s likes and dislikes

I really liked the shorter style tail bag — it kept one of my particularly filthy greys very clean and his tail surprisingly white! If I could tweak the design I would lengthen the tail guard. I liked that it was a simple design that did the job, kept their tails out of the way and clean, while being great value for money.

The tail bag is also great, but does have a split down the side, which resulted in one of the horses getting a stained tail while travelling — in an ideal world I would remove the split from the side of the tail bag and keep it all enclosed. Overall, this is good value for money and I would certainly use it again.

This tail guard looked straightforward, adjustable, slim and breathable — very positive.

Overview of performance

It fitted very well and the straps were a really good length, meaning there were no restrictions to adjusting the fit. It was also long enough to cover and protect both the top and bottom of the tail bone properly. It offered good protection and was made of a lightweight and breathable material. It kept the top half of the tail clean — a matching tail bag is sold separately (£7), which made the item become quite expensive in comparison to the others I tested. It washed well.

Harriet’s likes and dislikes

I liked the fit, shape and style of the guard, but it would have been so much better if the tail bag was included in the price and as part of the same product. I think there are good alternatives at a similar price point that include a removable bag, but if you only want a very well-fitting tail guard (without the bag), then this is one of the best I tested, in terms of size, fit and protection.

It was easy to take on and off, but the Velcro is very strong. The top of the tail was well kept, but as there was no tail bag, the tail got dirty very easily. It washed well.

Harriet’s likes and dislikes

I liked the length of the tail guard as it covered the tail bone from top to bottom — it offered great protection at the top of the tail and it laid flat with minimal interference. If a tail bag was included with it, it would have been even better — but if you only want a tail guard then this is a good choice, despite being quite expensive.

Verdict

This simple tail guard without a bag does a good job, but isn’t cheap.

This fly hood came into its own when we were at a three-star competition and, due to the weather conditions, the freestyle music was just played from one corner of the area. My horse was upset by moving from very quiet music in one corner to blasting music in the opposite diagonal corner. This fly hood was really good at muffling the sound and I think it really helped!

Tamsin’s likes and dislikes

I liked how well the fly hood fitted and how comfortable my horse seemed to be when wearing it. Although it looks bulky, it did the job really well.

First impressions

I really liked the shape and how well it sat on the horse. I thought the design and trim looked smart and it looked like it would be really hard wearing.

Overview of performance

I really put this numnah through the mill by using it multiple times a day in many different scenarios and it proved very hard wearing and never lost its shape. It looked very smart on my horses and although the fabric is thick, it wasn’t rigid. I also found that it never picked up any hair even just before the horse was due to be clipped. It also never slipped and was used with all types of jumping saddles.

Likes and dislikes

I really like how well made this numnah is and how well it went through the wash. I also found the Velcro straps at the girth very handy and, although I rarely used the top straps as it never moved, they are of a good length to not be restricting in any way.

Verdict

*BEST IN TEST & BEST VALUE* A great choice for amateurs and and professionals as it is really good value and will last for a long time.

This numnah is a bit more square in the shape at the back than the others on test, but shaped for jumping at the front.

Overview of performance

I like how it is built up at the withers and it doesn’t have loops for the girth straps to go through, instead they attach onto the D-ring, which is functional. However, the girth straps are fixed rather than Velcro, which makes it a bit trickier to get the numnah off quickly.

There is an extra panel where the girth is secured for added strength. It is hard wearing and isn’t showing any scuff marks, which is great considering I’ve used it daily. It stays in place well, although it did come up quite short in length for a full size. It picked up a little bit of hair but nothing major.

Sam’s likes and dislikes

I prefer Velcro girth straps for ease of use, but it is a good shape, is hard wearing and washes well.

Verdict

It’s a good shape, made of a nice material and it washes well — I’d recommend it to a friend.

It doesn’t look as smart as some others in the test, but that’s because it has anti-slip features. It hasn’t got any straps at the top, which I quite liked as I usually cut them off anyway.

Overview of performance

It’s quilted but doesn’t really hold its own shape. It does have a shape to the wither, but overall I found it a bit flimsy. It hasn’t worn or washed very well and some of the stitching is starting to go. There is quite a lot of natural padding, so I can see why it is used for cross-country, and it stayed in place well when in use. I like the fact that it has anti-slip between the saddle and numnah, rather than the numnah and horse.

Sam’s likes and dislikes

I’m not keen on the shape as I prefer squarer-shaped numnahs, but it does have anti-slip features and I like the cushioning effect.

Verdict

It’s a good price and a nice numnah overall. I can see what they are trying to achieve, but it’s not as hard wearing as I’d like.

The Felix Bühler Breeze Pro saddle pad has two decorative cords, a big synthetic leather badge with felt border and contrast-coloured guards on the girth loops. The underside is made of breathable and moisture absorbing air mesh.

First impressions

I’m not keen on the branding all over the numnah — I prefer them to be a little less branded. It is cut for jumping, but is a lot squarer at the front than some.

Overview of performance

It’s quite padded and the horses have got a little bit warm under it. Being slightly thicker can be a bonus if you want to use just one numnah without any extra pads, but if you do want to use a saddle pad underneath, it is probably that bit too thick and would make your horse too warm.

The girth straps are Velcro, which is a bonus for me but there isn’t as much Velcro on the strap so it’s not as flexible as some others on test that have longer Velcro straps. It’s also not as high cut at the wither as some of the other numnahs and it is slightly shaped at the front, but not as much as others.

It washed OK, but is not particularly hard wearing as there is some stitching that is coming undone on the binding. It has a non-scratch panel by the girth, which is a bonus.

Sam’s likes and dislikes

It comes up slightly shorter in length than others of the same size, and is a little too thick for my preference.

Verdict

It’s not as hard wearing as others at a similar price, but good if you don’t want to use any extra pads.

The Eskadron Brilliant saddlecloth is made of a very high-quality cotton/polyester mix with exclusive quilting. The underneath material is made of skin-friendly cotton with a stabilising foam insert and soft padding. It is embellished with cord edging.

First impressions

It is definitely more of a dressage shape than a classic jumping cut, as it’s only slightly shaped at the front and a bit squarer behind, but I quite like that.

Overview of performance

It doesn’t have Velcro girth straps, which is disappointing, but the top straps are well positioned and would give ample flexibility. It’s not cut as high as I’d like around the wither, but it’s adequate and it sits well. It’s soft to touch with soft binding, and it’s not overly thick. It stayed in place and didn’t rub, and it has washed and worn well. The stitching is also of good quality.

Sam’s likes and dislikes

It’s made of a softer material so is very flexible, but it is quite expensive.

Verdict

It is very expensive, but I did not find it superior in quality to other numnahs of lesser value.

The Tri-Zone overreach boots from Equilibrium are extremely hard-wearing boots that offers safe protection from over-reach injuries. They are ideal for high impact sports or providing extra protection during turnout. They are made from robust EVA with a super tough TPU strike guard to protect the heel area, plus anti-spin heel button for the perfect fit.

First impressions

These boots looked simply designed and the block at the back looked like it would keep them in place. The strike pad on the heel made me feel that they would give good protection from overreaches.

Overview of performance

These boots didn’t come down so low that there was a risk of them being trodden on, but came down low enough to protect the bulbs of the heel against over-reaching, which is the ideal position. The Velcro was strong, secure and made them easy to take on and off. The boots stayed in position well and had enough padding to give good protection while still being lightweight. They didn’t make any noise on the hoof and I felt that the horse’s movement wasn’t affected at all. I’m sure they would also be great for turn-out, but I almost think they are too smart for that!

Likes and dislikes

I really like how the soft top doesn’t rub, how well they sit around the hoof and what good value for money they are. However, I do think that they may not work quite as well on a horse with particularly upright, boxy front hooves.
