Horse riders need hi-vis and not just for gloomy autumn and winter days – it’s one of the simplest, most effective ways to become more visible, which should help you to stay safe on the road. It helps you stand out to other road users, giving them time to see you, slow down and pass wide. It also helps when you’re hacking off road as others – dog walkers or low-flying aircraft, for example – will notice you sooner.

You really shouldn’t be on the road with a horse without hi-vis – whether you’re riding or leading. But what exactly are the best hi-vis options for horse riders – and are there any rules you have to follow? Here’s what you need to know.

Highway Code: do horse riders need high-vis?

The Highway Code (rules 49-55) advises riders to make themselves as visible as possible – and it gets specific:

• In daylight, wear fluorescent or light-coloured clothing
• In poor visibility or at night, switch to reflective gear and add lights

Hi-vis, or fluorescent, material works best in daylight. Reflective strips bounce light back to the source like headlights. To cover all bases, your hacking gear should combine both bright hi-vis material and silver reflective elements.

If you ride in low light (which the Code discourages), extra precautions include:

• Reflective bands above the fetlocks on your horse
• A white light at the front and red at the rear, attached to your right arm, leg or boot
• A fluorescent or reflective tail guard on your horse

These aren’t legal requirements, but they are considered best practice – and could affect liability in the event of an incident.

Some insurers expect riders to take “reasonable precautions”. If you’re involved in an accident and weren’t wearing any hi-vis, it could weaken your claim. In court, it might even be treated as contributory negligence.

Why both horse and rider need hi-vis

Don’t assume hi-vis on the rider is enough. Horses may be large, but they can easily blend into hedgerows, tree lines or shaded lanes – especially darker-coloured horses.

Adding reflectivity to your horse’s legs, tail, and sides with some of the best hi-vis for horses helps drivers recognise shape and movement from a distance. Motion draws attention, so reflective gear on moving parts – like legs or your arms – makes you even more noticeable in low light or headlights.

What to look for when buying hi-vis

At a minimum, the British Horse Society (BHS) recommends a hi-vis jacket or tabard for the rider, and reflective leg bands for the horse. But there are smart upgrades worth considering.

Lights make a proven difference

The BHS commissioned the Transport Research Laboratory to study rider visibility on roads. One key takeaway? Riders should wear lights wherever possible.

LEDs are an effective way to boost visibility, especially in dull or fading light. Aim to position them to show your width:

• On each shoulder
• Along your horse’s flanks
• On legs or boots to enhance motion visibility
• Whether flashing or static, the more angles you’re visible from, the better. Lights combined with reflective gear give you the best chance of being seen early and clearly.

Safety standards

Look for hi-vis gear that meets recognised standards – it’s a sign the product has been properly tested.

• EN 17353:2020 – for leisure riders
• EN ISO 20471:2013 – for professional kit (often issued by employers)

Even accessories like hat bands, armbands or harnesses should meet these standards if possible.

Colour options

Consider where you’ll be riding and what colours might show up best. For example, if you regularly ride past crop fields in summer, you’re much more likely to stand out in pink than yellow. Likewise, orange may not be the best in autumn thanks to leaves changing colour. The best way to get around this is to choose hi-vis clothing that’s made up of a combination of colours.

Hi-vis kit options

There are so many hi-vis options to choose from for both you and your horse, and really there’s never too much. While you might feel seen in a tabard and exercise sheet, if you’re on a bend, drivers are unlikely to see you until the last minute, but they might have been able to see a hi-vis hat band over the hedge on their approach. Dress to be seen from all angles and perspectives – a breastplate is helpful for those approaching from the front, but not so much from behind.

Hi-vis for horse riders might not technically be a legal requirement, but it should be a non-negotiable if you’re heading out on the road. Visibility gives other road users more time to react – and that time could save you and your horse from a close call. It will also help low flying aircraft see you earlier, which may enable them to avoid flying directly over you.

High visibility or “hi viz” for horse riders is absolutely essential for any equestrian that leaves the confines of the arena. When you’re riding on the road, it’s so important to make sure you’re visible to other road users as without specialist hi viz clothing you can be left invisible in a variety of conditions.

Every extra second that you can give another road user to spot you and slow down, makes you that bit safer – it’s all about reducing the risk. Even when you’re not on the road, hi viz can still help others – such as dog walkers and cyclists – realise your presence sooner. You can choose between hi viz jackets, waistcoats, headbands, hat silks or gloves – in reality, the brighter you can make yourself, the better.

There are a lot of basic hi viz options, such as hi viz waistcoats, but even many of the hi viz waistcoats with horse-related prints on aren’t necessarily designed to be the most functional in the saddle. Many equestrian brands, however, have taken on the challenge of designing functional, technical and stylish hi viz for horse riders, and such jackets have useful additions, such as pockets – so are usually worth the extra money.

When choosing between all the different hi viz options, think about whether you want a warm jacket to wear as an additional layer, or if you would prefer a lighter tabard that you can wear over the top come rain or shine. You might even want both – one for summer and one for winter. For your hi viz jacket to be as effective as possible, you need to keep it clean – so a machine washable jacket is a real bonus.

As well as donning some hi viz items yourself, there are also many options of hi viz for horses – for example, a hi viz exercise sheet, breastplate, boots or leg wraps – and a combination of the two is recommended.

Do horse riders have to wear hi viz?

There is no law in the UK that requires horse riders to wear hi viz clothing – or put it on their horse – but yes, horse riders still need to wear hi-viz. It’s in the best interests of all riders that they do – both on and off road – as it gives others advanced warning of their presence. The same applies if you’re leading a horse.

A driver who pushed a horse along the road with his van and hit two riders has been successfully prosecuted,

Jonathan Coleman, of Woodlands, Pethybridge, 59, was convicted of driving without reasonable consideration for other road users, and of failing to stop after an accident in which another person and an animal were injured on 18 November last year, at Barnstaple Magistrates’ Court on 10 December.

British Horse Society (BHS) stage IV coach Val Skull told H&H her son James, a stage III coach, was one of the riders hit and the young mare he was riding, who had been sent to the Skulls for backing, was the horse pushed along the road. James was riding with his girlfriend Georgia Britton and another friend and the group had just turned on to the main road, where there was a line of parked cars on the left, when the van approached from behind.

“There were cars approaching but they’d seen the riders — no one is allowed to leave our yard without fluorescent gear on — and stopped to allow them past the parked cars,” Val said.

“Then the van came up from behind and tried to overtake. Georgia was at the back and thought ‘oh my goodness’. She had a short jumping whip, which hit the van, and she was waving at him, telling him to go back. He dropped back and she turned round, getting a good view of the van and the driver on her camera, and thought ‘thank goodness’, that an accident had been prevented.

“But then she turned back round and the next moment, he was coming through.”

Val said the driver hit Georgia’s knee as he passed her, and missed the other horse and rider between Georgia and James.

“James is an amazing rider and we do a huge amount of desensitising work with the youngsters before they go on the roads but the youngster just turned to look and go ‘wow’ and the driver just whammed straight through her,” Val said. “He whacked James’s leg and pushed her up the road for a good few steps, diagonally, then he just drove off.

“He didn’t stop or look, or even falter, he just went.”

Val said James, who had to be resuscitated after he was involved in a hit and run three years ago, aged 17, made sure all horses and riders were unharmed enough to continue along the road and pull into a large lay-by.

Police were called and Val and her husband arrived on the scene, where she took a picture of the group.

“I knew something was wrong as James wouldn’t be on the side of the road like that otherwise,” she said. “We called the police and they arrived at the yard in about 20 minutes, which was great, and the first thing they asked was: ‘Were you visible?’ I’d taken the picture on purpose and he said ‘Send that to me’.”

Val and the riders were pleased with the outcome of the case, and Val added that it highlights a number of issues to be aware of.

“We need cameras; we wouldn’t have got him without Georgia’s,” she said. “Christmas is coming up and it should be number one on your list.

“Get your public liability insurance — the police officer said he knew we didn’t have to have it by law but he asked if we did and I think it’s important for riders. And have your fluorescent gear and understand it needs to be bright, not just reflective. You can see in the picture that all the riders have different colours on as in changing seasons, I think different colours show up better.”

Val also recommends desensitising horses as much as possible, to try to ensure they are as safe as possible on the roads, and encouraged riders to report any incident, using the BHS Horse i app.

“If we’re going to get anywhere as riders, we need to report everything,” she said. “If everyone reports what’s happening, we’ll get a much clearer picture.”

Val said as well as requiring everyone riding from her yard to be in fluorescent and safety gear, with no undone, flapping clothes, she also believes in being as polite as possible to drivers to keep them on side. She regularly posts in her local Facebook group to thank those who pass appropriately, and explain why some young horses may not always be able to trot out of the way, which she thinks has contributed to the fact local drivers do pass them considerately.

Asked what she would say to this convicted driver, she said: “for drivers in the countryside, maybe think about leaving earlier. This man was driving a work van and I don’t know if he’s still got the job but he could lose it, if he hasn’t already, and that could mean everything.

“But also, how would he live with himself if he’d killed one of those young riders? They were all about 19 at the time and he’d have had to live with that for the rest of his life.”

For failing to stop, the driver was fined £864 and ordered to pay costs of £600 and a £116 victim surcharge. His licence was endorsed with seven points. He was fined £300 for driving without due care.

An HGV driver who came face to face with two ridden horses on a narrow country lane has urged riders to wear high-vis hat bands or covers to help lorry drivers see them earlier.

Holly Bogucka was driving her milk tanker on a narrow lane in Lancashire on 31 October when she suddenly came across the two riders.

She told H&H she used to ride and own a horse and knows there are a number of yards in the area, so she was on the alert for horses on the road.

“I was driving really slowly, ready to stop, and keeping an eye out for cars because they come round the corners so fast — then there I was, nose to nose with these horses,” she said.

“They were immaculately turned out and in full high-vis, but I just couldn’t see them over the hedge. I thought ‘Oh my god, there’s going to be an accident here’, but the horses didn’t blink, I couldn’t believe it.”

Holly was able to reverse to allow the riders to get off the road into a driveway, then waited till the horses were happy and facing her before she drove past slowly.

But she believes that had the riders had high-vis on their hats, she would have been able to see them, and stop, earlier.

“It was dark and overcast that day, and the hedges had been cut but they’re thick,” she said. “The height I’m at in my cab, I can see over the hedges, and I think then I’d have seen them and been able to stop before the bend. These riders had done absolutely everything right, it was just bad luck.”

Holly said as a teenager, she did not like wearing high-vis, but now as a professional driver, she realises its importance.

“I wouldn’t go on the roads without it now,” she said. “You’ve got to give yourself every chance, it’s so important.”

Holly posted about the incident on the Pass Wide and slow Facebook group, to flag the benefits of high-vis hats, and said the response was very positive.

“People were saying they hadn’t realised what difference a high-vis hat band could make,” she said. “I’m so happy if I’ve made a difference. The two ladies themselves are in the group and they’ve said they’ll buy hat bands now. I said hopefully I’ll see them again — and a bit sooner next time!”

EQUESTRIANS have been reminded of their responsibilities while riding on the road – from why high-vis is useful in court cases to the importance of thanking drivers.

In a webinar hosted by the British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) on 20 August, as part of its Summer of Safety series, sergeant Zoe Billings of North Yorkshire Police and BETA chief executive Claire Williams discussed how risk on the road can be reduced for riders and drivers.

Sergeant Billings, a horse owner and former riding instructor, said she rides and carriage-drives on the road and has first-hand experience from both sides of the fence.

“I’ve been to fatalities involving horses and riders. I’m also that car driver that sees the behaviour of riders and how that can influence driver behaviour,” she said. “It gives me a little bit of concern that we as riders aren‘t necessarily doing all that we can to maximise our safety.”

The importance of being alert while riding on the roads and the use of mobile phones was discussed.

“The amount of riders in groups who are so engrossed in their conversation that the car ‘suddenly appears from nowhere’. If the first person who spots the car is your horse you should be embarrassed,” said Sgt Billings. “You should never be surprised if a car appears because they don’t appear from nowhere, and especially now with electric cars – they’re quiet. Don’t be reliant on hearing that engine sound.

“It is not an offence to use your phone when you’re riding but is it a good idea? Keep calls to a minimum or answer in emergencies, but consider a bluetooth earpiece.”

Sgt Billings said she advises against waving drivers round bends.

“Yes we have a good view in an elevated position but all it takes is for a bicycle to be coming round the corner that we haven’t seen. Let the driver make their own decision on what is safe for them,” she said, adding that riders should consider thanking all drivers.

“I hate going past horses where they don’t thank you. It’s about thinking, ‘How do we react to get the best out of the driver?’ Our action will influence their reaction, and you have to think that will influence their next action. If they haven’t slowed down enough, was it because the previous time they did they didn’t get an acknowledgement? It doesn’t help.

“If it’s safe to take your hand off the rein, brilliant. If it isn’t, use a big smile and nod. It will really make a difference and they will think about it. Obviously if they have put you in danger I’m not saying thank them, but it’s about showing that extra level of courtesy to elevate the perception of riders to being responsible, friendly and courteous on the roads.”

Sgt Billings said there are a number of myths around high-vis, including riders incorrectly believing that wearing high-vis is an admission of not being safe to be on the road.

“You want to maximise your conspicuity, stand out and smack them between the eyes in terms of ‘I am here to be seen’,” she said. “If the worst does happen, showing you are visible can assist in a criminal and civil court case. Criminally, if we can show that you were there to be seen, and still a driver didn’t see you – that could help tip the balance if that driver is prosecuted or not, if there is enough evidence.

“In a civil case, if you can show you have maximised your safety and reduced your risk as much as you can that can affect payout; it can make the difference between 100% or 50%. Suddenly a £5.99 slip-over high-vis doesn’t seem such a bad idea.”

British Horse Society director of safety Alan Hiscox, who took part in an earlier webinar to discuss the society’s road safety work and its role in the review of the Highway Code for vulnerable road users, said riders have to take their responsibilities seriously, and agreed high-vis “really does make a difference”.

“We had a report with the Transport Research Laboratory in 2017 which talks about drivers detecting horses, riders, carriage-drivers, and being able to judge their approach. We have scientific evidence now that says if you wear conscious clothing it really does increase your safety,” he said.

Ms Williams added that it is important that riders wear high-vis of the correct standard.

“A lot of people don’t realise that high-vis clothing isn’t just fluorescent clothing. It’s not just the fabric, it’s the retroreflective tape that reflects lights and as a riders you need to check when picking that high-vis it meets the appropriate standard. That means it passes tests on washability and durability. A bright orange jacket is not necessarily a piece of high-vis, though it probably helps make you be seen on the road.”

It’s not bright, but it reflects really well on the road. It was also flattering, which was an added bonus. The hood can’t be zipped tighter so sometimes the wind blows it off. Overall, I love it and would definitely recommend it — but maybe more for off the yard, dog walking or other outdoor activities, because it looses its USP during the day!

This jacket definitely serves its purpose to make you highly visible! It fits well in a sense that is more of a loose fit, which makes it comfortable and easy to move in. It works well in rainy and windy weather and it can be worn in most temperatures with or without a jumper. I mostly used it for hacking or walking horses in-hand down the road, but I you could use it for any type of walking or work on more exposed areas where visibility is crucial.

Tamsin’s likes and dislikes

I like that it’s not too thick and I can wear it even in warmer weather, but that it also works really well in rainy and windy weather. The zippers on the sides that make riding more comfortable are a great feature.

The Stierna Air reflective jacket is a modern hi-vis jacket in windproof lightweight fabric with a reflective finish. The wind resistance will keep you warm and comfortable and the reflective fabric will keep you visible. First impressions

It looked quite thin, and had a simple style — flattering and effective.

Overview of performance

This jacket fitted perfectly. It was comfortable and good for most weathers as it wasn’t too warm, but kept the wind and light rain off. It stood up to regular wear, but I was worried it could be easily ripped or torn. I didn’t feel like I was seen very well in this jacket as it only reflects when headlights are shone on it.

Tamsin’s likes and dislikes

I loved how lightweight and comfortable this jacket was, but it was a shame that it wasn’t very effective in daylight or at dusk, which meant I didn’t really like wearing it on the road.

Verdict

A flattering lightweight and comfortable jacket, but not the most visible.

One of Britian’s busiest Royal Air Force (RAF) bases has been providing riders with free high-vis gear to help keep them safe while out riding.

RAF Wittering, near Peterborough, has handed out branded day-glo tabards, hat bands and exercise sheets.

The move came as the RAF’s Chinook helicopter force was due to arrive at the base for training, which runs until early November.

“Obviously I’m very pleased that RAF Wittering can demonstrate the utility of its airfield by hosting the Chinook force,” said group captain Tony Keeling, RAF Wittering’s station commander.

“For many, Chinooks will be an unfamiliar noise in our skies. We want to make sure that our nearby equestrian communities feel informed and have an opportunity to get the equipment they need before flying commences in order to maximise their safety.”

A spokesman for the base added high-vis clothing means pilots are able to spot riders at a greater distance, giving them more time to take avoiding action.

“RAF Wittering is a busy place, we support deployed air operations and train future pilots here,” added Captain Keeling.

“We use the roads and the skies daily, so I’m keen that we reach out to the equestrian community to inform them of a change in operations and help to maximise safety.”

The British Horse Society advises riders to wear high-vis at all times while out riding — both on and off the roads — to give them the best chance of being spotted by pilots.

The Ministry of Defence also has a helpline on 0800 515544, where riders can find out more information about planned low-level flying in their area.

This is manned on weekdays between 8am-5pm from November to March; and 8am-8pm from April to October.

“Be seen – be safe” has long been the message to riders on the roads. The British Horse Society (BHS) and the Pony Club recommend that equestrian road users wear hi-viz clothing.

But is that enough to help prevent a near miss or accident?

Between 2000 and 2010, there were 1,197 accidents reported to the BHS, of which 911 involved horses being ridden.

A team of researchers from Duchy College are now looking into which factors alter the chance of having a near miss when riding on the road.

Rose Scofield, animal lecturer and tutor at the college in Cornwall, who is a rider herself, led the study.

The aim of the study was to build a “safer rider profile” that could be followed by road-using equestrians.

The academics circulated a survey via UK social media between October 2013 and January 2014, and received 353 responses.

Of the respondents, 66.2% had experienced a near miss on the roads within the past year.

The questionnaire covered the wearing of fluorescent/reflective equipment, horse colour, demographic information and the environment in which the near miss took place.

The results of the research threw up a surprising finding – coloured horses are less likely to be involved in near misses.

The academics found that piebalds and skewbalds had noticeably fewer near misses than horses of solid colours when ridden on the roads.

They also found that wearing lights helped to prevent near misses.

However, they found no “significant relationship” between wearing fluorescent/reflective equipment and the likelihood of having a near miss.

In fact, the study’s abstract states that combinations who do wear fluorescent/reflective equipment “do not seem to have any advantage in avoiding near misses than those who do not”.

Location was also not a factor, but near misses were more likely to happen in summer, and in the early morning.

Lee Hackett of the BHS said that it welcomes any research into horse and rider safety on the road and Duchy College is “to be applauded” for this study.

He added: “However, we do need to be careful when interpreting the results. In the scheme of things 350 riders is a very small number and, while the conclusions reached may well prove to be valid, at this point it would be potentially dangerous to conclude that hi-viz does not offer any real protection.

“We certainly strongly urge all riders to wear fluorescent/reflective clothing at all times when riding on the road, but we are very interested to hear of any further developments that come out of this line of work.”

Further research is set to be carried out this summer by the team, made up of Ms Scofield, Hannah Savin and Dr Hayley Randle.

They also have plans to develop some equipment for road riders, based on their research, to help improve safety.

Ms Scofield said: “This summer we are carrying out further research to back up our work, as I feel we have stumbled on something that might be of significant importance to what equipment riders and horses wear on the roads.

“We have designed and hold on patent pending a tabard and exercise sheet design that will hopefully begin to be produced this year.”

The academics will be filming clips of horses and riders wearing various fluorescent and reflective equipment, as well as their new designs.

They will then run a test programme with drivers to establish the differences in timing of their first sight of the various types of equipment.

Mr Hackett encouraged anyone who experiences a problem while riding, driving or leading a horse on the road to report it – including whether or not they were wearing hi-viz.

“It is so important that we have hard evidence when evaluating the safety of horses and riders on the road,” he said.

Riders wearing popular brands of hi-viz clothing that resemble police uniform could face prosecution, announced senior officers last week.

Police forces have been advised on the legal position, but independent lawyers think it is “very unlikely” that wearers would be taken to court. So where does this leave riders, manufacturers and retailers?

The Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) has issued guidance to manufacturers and forces, after receiving complaints by members of the public, who have mistaken riders for mounted police officers.

Assistant Chief Constable Rod Hansen, who is head of the mounted branch, said certain items of clothing had “caused concern to the police”.

Anything that gives the appearance of being police uniform based on the three characteristics of colour (yellow hi-viz), similar wording to police (in shape, format or font) and chequered banding (blue/silver) is at risk of breaking the law, he said.

The rider could be charged with the crime of impersonating a police officer.

“These complaints have been investigated and legal advice obtained. Anyone possessing such products is at risk of breaking the law, namely Section 90 of the Police Act 1996,” he added.

Prosecutions ‘unlikely’

Equestrian lawyer Jacqui Fulton believes riders are unlikely to find themselves charged for wearing these products, but that many will nevertheless now feel uncomfortable wearing them.

“In reality, I think it is very unlikely that the court would prosecute a rider for wearing clothing with the intention of slowing drivers down,” she said.

“But they do have the ability to do so and riders should therefore be aware of that risk.”

For the past couple of years, the matter has been a “grey area”, said ACPO.

As a case has never come to court, there is no precedent as to what would happen.

Proviz has launched its first range for horses and riders.

The clothing and accessories in the new equestrian range have been created with the latest light-emitting technology to help increase safety.

The company says the waterproof designs are “comfortable, lightweight and stylish” and will ensure that horses and riders are always seen in the dark.

It includes bands for hats and tack, exercise sheets, horse spats and jackets and tabards.

The range can be matched with Proviz messenger bags, rucksacks, light emitting vests and belts.

All items in the equestrian range are priced between £7.49 for hi-visibility horse necklaces, to £34.99 for exercise sheets.

If riders want to prevent accidents arising from low-flying aircraft, they must understand how invisible they are in the countryside, say pilots.

For Group Captain Dom Toriati, there is one thing riders could do to reduce the stress levels of his pilots on low-flying sorties – and ensure their horses are not spooked in the process.

“Wear high-visibility gear,” he told H&H. “Not just for riding on the roads, but every time you go out.”

Gp CaptToriati – who is station commander at RAF Odiham, Hants, home of the UK’s fleet of Chinooks – was speaking at a meeting at the base for figures from the horseworld recently. It followed concerns aired in H&H about low flying.

Last year, racehorse trainer Ann Duffield suffered what she felt was a “deliberate” attempt by a Chinook pilot to panic her horses on the gallops in North Yorkshire.

A Ministry of Defence (MoD) investigation found no offence was committed, but Mrs Duffield’s concerns prompted the National Trainers’ Federation (NTF) to ask riders to report their experiences, in an attempt to establish the scale of the problem.

Gp CaptToriati told the group – including representatives of the NTF, H&H and local yards – that his pilots were trained to avoid riders wherever possible.

“There is a terrible way of looking at flying, that it’s just a boys’ game. But we are doing a real piece of work here,” he said.

“To minimise exposure to the enemy [in Afghanistan], our crews fly at approximately 100 feet – and it takes a lot of training to do that,” he added.

Gp CaptToriati acknowledged that such training could cause problems for riders – but stressed horses were often invisible to his pilots.

“When I receive correspondence from the public, it is always, ‘Why didn’t you see me, why didn’t the crew try to avoid me?’

“But it will be because they haven’t seen them,” he added.

Delegates were then taken up in a Chinook to observe the limited visibility from the cockpit.

Doug Fowler, flight safety officer for the station, explained: “We are flying at 2 1/2 miles per minute, so you need to spot a hazard several hundred yards away to take evasive action.

“If riders are in hi-viz clothing, the crew can pick them out – and have time to act.”

Flight Lieutenant Scott Eldridge said he had managed to “box round” riders during a recent sortie, because of their attire.

“We could see two large fluorescent objects against the hedge line. As we got closer, we could see they were horses, draped in hi-viz rugs – they were so obvious, I wanted to stop and shake the riders’ hands,” he said.

Judy Crossfield of the NTF said the day had been an “eye-opener”.

“More than 40 people contacted us to complain about low-flying,” she said. “I don’t doubt that these episodes took place, but I do wonder if riders could do more to help themselves.

“But all those that did contact the MoD complained about the attitude of the personnel they’d spoken to,” she added.

Gp CaptToriati said people who complained directly to him – and were unsatisfied with his response – would be invited to come to the base.

He also agreed to look at adding Chinook movements to the forecast of daily flying activity available on the freephone number: 0800 515544.

Sheila Hardy of the British Horse Society (BHS) – who worked with the MoD to establish the low-flying guidelines – told H&H she was satisfied military personnel had “gone as far as they could”.

“I will be to talking to RAF Odiham about putting their movements on the phoneline,” she said.

“But I was astounded how invisible horses can be. There has to be some meeting halfway and we have to take responsibility for ourselves,” she added.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has upheld a complaint against an advert by Equisafety that said its Polite range of high-visibility riding wear had been “police consulted”.

Equisafety told the ASA that the words “police consulted” were not meant to imply that the police had approved the product for use.

However, the company agreed to take the wording off

future adverts.

“We have been reported to the ASA by just one person but have changed the advert,” said Nicky Fletcher of Equisafety.

The British Horse Society (BHS) has launched a national survey to discover why more horse riders and carriage drivers do not wear hi-viz clothing.

Since the launch of their dedicated safety website, www.horseaccidents.org.uk, in November they have received more than 100 reports of road accidents.

They claim that wearing hi-viz clothing can allow a driver an extra three seconds of reaction time to help avoid a potentially fatal accident.

Now that British Summer Time has begun, bringing more hours of daylight and potential hacking with it, the BHS wants to learn more about what hi-viz equipment people use.

The questions also cover the reasons, ranging from comfort to style issues, why some people choose not to use this potentially life saving equipment.

Sheila Hardy of the BHS said: “Wearing high-viz equipment will not only ensure that drivers on the road will see you up to three seconds sooner, and can therefore take avoidance; but it will also help you be found if you are lying injured following a fall.”

The short survey, which can be completed online at www.bhs.org.uk, will run until the end of May 2011 and respondents have the chance to win BHS Gold membership free for a year, plus BHS gift vouchers.

A campaign to improve the safety of horses and riders on the road has been launched in Hampshire, following the death of rider Lindy Harding.

Mrs Harding, 59, died on 8 February when her horse bolted and collided with a car.

The play worker and driver at Brookfield Community College, Hampshire, sustained serious head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Now friends of Mrs Harding have launched the Think Pony Power campaign to alert drivers to riders on the roads and encourage riders to wear hi-vis clothing and carry identification in case of an accident.

Karen Diamond, who heads the campaign, is calling for more triangle road signs in the area warning of horse activity.

She said: “We need to get the safety message across to the general public. Lindy would have wholeheartedly approved of what we are doing.”

The group also wants to highlight the need for more off-road riding and bridlepaths in the area.

A new certification scheme has been introduced to make it easier for riders to ensure they are wearing high-visibility garments that comply with British safety standards.

Under EU legislation introduced last April, high-vis garments must now conform to safety standards for colour and luminescence and meet requirements for wear.

Although horse kit is not included in the legislation, there are three high-vis standards for rider clothing — professional use, leisure use and one for accessories such as gloves and chaps.

The new certification scheme — different coloured labels and stickers —launched by the British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) aims to make identifying these three standards easier.

“There is a lot of confusion over the safety standards,” said Claire Williams, BETA executive director. “The marking system will clarify things.

“The colour-coded labels will enable customers to buy with knowledge and confidence as they know that all the checking has been done by BETA.”

Garments certified for professional use (EN471) are represented by an aqua label, those for leisure use (EN1150) by a royal blue label and accessories (EN13356) by a navy blue label.

Ms Williams added: “It is not compulsory for companies to join the scheme, but by doing so they are helping the retailer and consumer to understand.”

Sheila Hardy, safety officer for the British Horse Society, said: “Anything that makes the standards clearer, such as a colour code, has got to be a good thing.”

Airbag vests initially designed for motorcyclists are catching the eye of horse-riders.

The vests, produced by Japanese company Hit-Air, feature an internal airbag that can be activated within half a second when a pull cord attached to the saddle is dislodged.

When inflated, the bag provides protection for the rider’s neck, back, chest, sides and hips. The vests also feature fully adjustable straps to ensure a snug fit.

“We have always supplied motorcyclists with these vests,” Ian Wilson from Wild and Wicked, stockists of Hit-Air vests, told H&H, “but we live in a horsey area, and so took on the equestrian side last month.

“They are not designed for use in competitions, but would be ideal for people out hacking or horse-riding on the roads.”

Hit-Air has recently launched the Hit-Air YS Airbag Vest, a fluorescent vest that combines a high-visibility mesh outer cover with the airbag system, providing high visibility and impact absorption.

“Although they have been designed for motorcyclists, the black version of the vests have already been very popular amongst equestrians,” explained Abi Scott from Two Wheel, stockists of Hit-Air, told H&H.

“We are currently waiting for the hi-visibility version to be certified by CE safety standards for equestrian use, but we think it will be perfect for horse-riders on the roads.”

Hit Air are also developing a new range of horse jackets, specifically designed for equestrian use in competition.
