Young rider hospitalised after pony hit by double decker bus

A pony is recovering after being hit by a double decker bus in Hertfordshire.

A group of riders were hacking on the road on Sunday (24 January) at around 12.05pm.

Kian Shuck, Suzie Ballard, Chloe Daniels, Emily Setchell, were riding in single file towards St Albans on the A4147.

A vintage bus, operated by the Amersham & District Motorbus Society, came up behind the group.

“It followed for a short while before, despite oncoming traffic and the presence of white arrows indicating to stay left, the bus pulled towards the centre of the road and began to overtake the horses,” Ms Ballard told H&H.

“My horse spooked away from the bus onto the verge, stopping just before the ditch and pulling up.

“I was immediately behind Chloe, who was riding Puzzle.

“As the bus passed me, Puzzle became aware of it coming up behind her and spooked onto the verge in exactly the same way my horse did, but Puzzle slipped slightly into the ditch.”

Puzzle jumped away from the ditch, and into the path of the bus.

“As she tried to turn back again she lost her footing and skidded approximately 2ft off the curb, into the road, and hit the side of the bus rear end first before horse and rider landed on the road,” added Ms Ballard.

Chloe, who is 14, was taken to hospital with whiplash and soft tissue damage to her knee.

Puzzle was treated for bruising and cuts.

Ms Ballard is now appealing for drivers to take more care around horses.

“It’s very important that motorists are made aware of horses, and how they should be approached and passed on public highways.

“The guidelines are 2m and 15mph for passing a horse on a road but I would be surprised if many non-horse riders know this,” she added.

Police are investigating.

Patchetts planning application withdrawn

An application to build houses on Patchetts Equestrian Centre has been withdrawn.

Patchetts closed in August and plans to replace it with a 46-house development were submitted to Hertsmere Borough Council that month.

A statement on the equestrian centre’s website said that the sad decision to shut had been made as the business had not been economically viable for some time.

It added that the centre had been supported independently by the McTaggart family for several years, but the continued personal support in the current economic situation could no longer be sustained.

The application to build on the site in Aldenham, Hertfordshire, was set to be discussed by the council’s planning committee at a meeting this evening (Thursday 10 December).

But the plans, which had been recommended for refusal by planning officers, has now been removed from the agenda at the request of the applicant.

The application had received 73 objections from members of the public and the case officer’s report gave five reasons for refusal.

The first reason was that the proposed development would have a greater impact on the openness of the greenbelt than the current buildings, which would be “inappropriate”.

The second reason given was that the number of houses and the subsequent population increase would be out of scale with the existing village.

Further reasons were also given regarding the listed buildings, that the development would not “preserve or enhance” the character of the conservation area or the settings of the listed buildings and insufficient information regarding the impact on bat roosts.

“The council has not acted pro-actively through positive engagement with the applicant as in the council’s view the proposal is unacceptable in principle and the fundamental objections cannot be overcome through dialogue,” the report concludes.

The applicant, Heronslea, declined to comment.

Special constables saddle up to fight Hertfordshire crime

Riders in Hertfordshire have taken to the streets — and fields — to try to combat rural crime.

The county’s police force has appointed 14 of its special constables to police rural areas — on horseback if they wish — to tackle crime in the countryside.

“We need to start listening to our rural communities,” said Inspector George Holland, who devised the scheme last year.

The rural special constables, whether mounted or not, have full police powers and will patrol in uniform.

They aim to provide reassurance to rural communities and help prevent crime.

While the position is voluntary, Hertfordshire Police will provide full training and pay expenses.

Kate Solomon, a housing support manager for the London borough of Barnet, has been a special constable in Hertfordshire for more than three years.

Last week, she and her horse Frankie joined the rural specials unit.

“We’ll patrol areas that we ride in already and look out for suspicious activity and anything that would be interesting to criminals. This morning, for example, I spotted a farmer had left a trailer full of fertiliser out,” she said.

“We’re able to get to places on horseback that a patrol car can’t reach. We are rural people ourselves so we understand the issues better.”

Mrs Solomon carries a radio to call for backup should she see any suspicious activity.

Hertfordshire Police would like to double the number of rural specials by the start of

next year and is urging gamekeepers, farmers and anyone with an interest in the rural community, who is in good general health, to apply.

Dead yearling found dumped in Hertfordshire lane

Police in Hertfordshire are appealing for information after a dead pony was found in a quiet country lane.

The yearling was still warm when it was found on the roadside by a farmer at about 9.30am last Friday in Grubbs Lane, Wild Hill near Welwyn.

Pc Jo Wakelin, beat officer for the area, said: “It has obviously been dragged off a trailer and can only have been dead a couple of hours.

“It had some small marks and had no horseshoes, but looked like it had been once kept in a field.”

She said it looked as though it had died of natural causes but that the owner had dumped the body rather than dispose properly of it.

At least two people must have been involved, she added, because it was quite a heavy animal.

She appealed for anyone who might have seen it being dumped from a trailer or seen people at the roadside there to come forward so they could find out what had happened.
