Hayley Turner, a successful Flat jockey, continues to forge out a winning riding career, with hundreds of victories to her name, and counting.

In 2008, Hayley became the first woman to ride 100 UK Flat race winners during a calendar year. She retired from racing in 2015 and became a regular contributor to ITV Racing but she came out of retirement in 2018 and since then has ridden two winners at Royal Ascot.

Tonight (14 February), Judy Murray (mother of Grand Slam-winning tennis player, Andy) meets Hayley to find out more about her career in a TV programme called Driving Force, which is a series that focuses on successful women in sport.

“You go out on the track and you don’t do anyone any favours – you gain their respect,” Hayley says on the programme with regards to how it is lining up against men in racing.

AP McCoy also appears on the show and when asked about women in racing he says: “Not just Hayley, but lots of the other girls too, are proving that they are just as good as the men.”

“If you’re worried about what they [men] think of you then you might be in the wrong game – you’ve got to be a bit tough,” explains hugely successful Flat jockey Hollie Doyle.

“Racing is quite behind with the support and help that we’ve had since I started [race riding] – it’s quite a gruelling sport and although we talk about all the highs, I had a winner yesterday, but today is a new day,” says Hayley. “On TV you see the glamorous side of things with champagne spraying and trophies, but there’s a lot that goes on before that.”

Hayley Turner became only the second female jockey in history to ride a winner at Royal Ascot today (21 June).

The 36-year-old steered 33/1 shot Thanks Be — a three-year-old daughter of Mukhadram who is owned by Emma Capon — to victory in the Sandringham Stakes for trainer Charlie Fellowes.

It has been 32 years since Gay Kelleway became the first lady rider to win on the hallowed turf at the Royal meeting in Berkshire aboard Sprowston Boy.

Hayley announced her retirement from the saddle on 31 August 2015 before making her comeback in 2018. During her spell in retirement she joined the ITV Racing team on television.

After her win today, Hayley revealed she had phoned up the winning trainer to ask whether she could come and ride out at his yard.

“Charlie was quite confident [about the horse’s chances], he said everything was A1, including the ground and the trip. He said the only negative was the draw,” explained a delighted Hayley on ITV Racing.

“Thanks Be just sliced through the field easily. When a gap half comes and you’re going well, it makes it easier to take them. Only having eight stone on her back helped too.

“The standard [of female jockeys] is so high now and they all deserve to be here riding at Royal Ascot. The number of girls riding winners is rising and will only snowball.”

The winning pair beat the William Haggas-trained Magnetic Charm, who is owned by The Queen, by a neck.

Look at the start list for any of the three Olympic equestrian disciplines and men and women appear to be on equal footing. The same can’t be said for a racecard, but over the past 45 years there have been some major milestones for female jockeys.

On the eve of International Women’s Day (8 March 2017), and with the launch of The Silk Series — a pioneering new ￡100,000 race series for female jockeys — we celebrate some of the big moments.

1972The first ever race for female jockeys took place at Kempton Park, and was won by Meriel Tufnell.

1972Meriel Tufnell became Britain’s first female Champion Jockey.

1973Meriel Tufnell became European female Champion Jockey.

1976Diana Thorne became the first woman to ride a winner under National Hunt rules.

1982Geraldine Rees became the first female jockey to complete in the Grand National, finishing eighth on Cheers.

1987Gee Armytage became the first female jockey to win at the Cheltenham Festival winning the Kim Muir Challenge Cup and Mildmay of Flete Challenge Cup in the same year.

1987Gay Kelleway was the first woman to win at Royal Ascot on board Sprowston Boy in the Queen Alexandra Stakes.

1993Julie Krone was the first female jockey to win an American Classic at the Breeders’ Cup on board Colonial Affair in the Belmont Stakes.

1997Alex Greaves became the first woman to win a Group One, when dead-heating in the Nunthorpe Stakes at York on board Ya Malak.

Former top Flat jockey Hayley Turner has spoken of her gratitude towards The Queen for the opportunities she gave her during her career.

Hayley, who retired from race riding in November 2015, was presented with her OBE for services to horseracing by Her Majesty at Buckingham Palace on 24 October.

“It was brilliant, really good fun,” Hayley told H&H.

“Managing to get my two sisters, my mum and my nan into London all at once was quite a military operation!

“It was a fantastic day and the fact that Her Majesty The Queen was giving them out was a massive bonus.”

One of the most successful female jockeys of all time, Hayley’s race-riding career spanned 15 years.

In 2008, she rode 100 winners and became the first lady rider to achieve the century in a calendar year.

She was the first lady to ride an outright Group One winner, taking the July Cup in Newmarket with Dream Ahead in 2011. That year she scored another milestone when she won the Nunthorpe Stakes at the York Ebor Festival aboard Margot Did, becoming the first woman to win two Group Ones in a season.

Although she officially retired from race riding last year, Hayley made a competitive return to the saddle to take part in the Shergar Cup at Ascot in August as a substitute for injured Michelle Payne.

Hayley also rode a number of winners for The Queen.

“I had a brief chat with her [when she presented me with the OBE],” she said.

“We chatted about when I rode at the Shergar Cup this year.

“My mum has rehomed former racehorses and Her Majesty has sent a couple to her — I think she is quite keen to send us some more.

“I have had a fantastic career, it is people like Her Majesty The Queen who have given me the opportunities.”

She added that when people saw The Queen was giving her rides, other people followed suit.

The 33-year-old has now been confirmed as part of the presenting line-up for ITV when the channel takes over racing coverage from Channel 4 in January.

She told H&H she is “really looking forward to it”.

“I have a lot of work to do — I have spent the last 15 years riding horses, this is completely different,” she said.

Hayley Turner has made a return to the racecourse in a “warm-up” for the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup next month.

The former top British female Flat jockey retired from racing in November last year.

But Hayley was back in action at Newmarket on Friday evening (15 July) as she prepares to help defend her title in the team event at Ascot on 6 August.

The Shergar Cup involves teams of jockeys — The Girls, Europe and The Rest of the World — go head-to-head in five races across the afternoon.

The Girls — Hayley, Sammy Jo Bell and Emma-Jayne Wilson — were victorious last year.

Australian jockey Michelle Payne had been set to compete alongside Emma-Jayne and Cathy Gannon at the 2016 event, but is out of action due to injury.

Hayley had three rides at Newmarket on Friday, finishing fifth on her first, Yankee Mail, trained by Gay Kelleway.

Her other two rides were the Marco Botti-trained Clenymistra in the Colchester Cancer Centre Campaign maiden fillies’ stakes and He’s My Boy, trained by James Fanshawe, in the Maritime Cargo Services handicap, with whom she finished third.

One of the most successful female jockeys of all time, in 2008 Hayley became the first lady rider to achieve 100 wins in a calendar year.

During her glittering 15-year career, she rode more than 760 British winners and became the first lady to score a victory for The Queen.

She was named champion apprentice in 2005, the same year she rode 44 winners.

Former jockey Hayley Turner and the founder of an equestrian charity have been named in the Queen’s 90th Birthday Honours list.

Hayley, one of the most successful British female jockeys of all time, has been appointed OBE for services to horseracing.

“Wow! Some lovely messages to wake up to. Thank you all. OBE! Check me out,” she tweeted.

Originally from Nottingham, Hayley made her racing debut in March 2000 at Southwell.

She was named champion apprentice in 2005, the same year she rode 44 winners.

Her numerous top-level wins over the years include the Nunthorpe Stakes at York, Beverley D. Stakes at Arlington Park and the July Cup at Newmarket.

In 2008, she became the first lady rider to secure 100 wins in a year and in 2011, she became the only female jockey to ride two Group Ones in the same season.

Hayley retired from race riding in 2015.

Meanwhile, former four-star eventer Rachel Medill (below) has been appointed MBE for services to young people through her charity Ride High.

The aim of the charity is to change the prospects of Milton Keynes’ most disadvantaged children through contact with horses.

Since she founded the charity seven years ago, it has helped more than 1,000 children and currently works with 80 young people a week.

Rachel said she sees the “extraordinary” calming and healing effect that being around horses can have every day at Ride High.

“One of the young people, who has been coming to us for six months having been suicidal, said to me recently, ‘when things are bad, I know I just have to wait till Wednesday and I’ll come to Ride High and everything will be all right’,” she said.

“We are making a huge difference to these children’s lives.”

She added her ultimate ambition is to set up an equestrian and training centre to provide apprenticeships and jobs for Ride High members.

As the most successful British female jockey Hayley Turner says farewell to the weighing room, we celebrate the 32-year-old’s colourful 15-year career with some interesting facts:

1. Her final ride in Britain was on 7 November at Doncaster, she finished second aboard Buonarrati. She heads to South Africa this week for her last ever as a jockey in the International Jockeys Challenge.

2. She has ridden all over the world, in countries including Germany, France, Italy, Japan, USA, Mauritius, South Africa and Dubai.

3. She was a member of the winning Girls team at this year’s Shergar Cup at Ascot (pictured below).

4. She is a boxing fan and also enjoys going to watch the snooker and darts.

5. She was the first female jockey to ride an outright Group One winner aboard David Simock’s Dream Ahead in the July Cup at Newmarket in 2011.

6. She grew up in Nottinghamshire.

7. She first decided she wanted to be a jockey after attending a day at the Northern Racing College.

8. She has a dog called Dave.

9. She was taught to ride by her mother who is a riding instructor and started off showjumping.

10. Her jockey career started as apprentice to Michael Bell in Newmarket.

12. Her first win came three months later at Pontefract riding Generate — it was only her eighth ride of her career.

14. She was the first woman to ride 100 winners in a year in Britain.

15. She was the first lady jockey to be crowned champion apprentice in 2005 — sharing the title with Saleem Golam.

16. She was only the fourth woman to ride out her claim after Alex Greaves, Emma O’Gorman and Lisa Jones (pictured below with Alex).

17. In March 2009, an accident on the gallops left her with a serious head injury. She was suspended on medical grounds for a year — later reduced after a successful appeal.

18. She became the first female jockey to ride a winner for The Queen, passing the post first on Tactician at Newbury in April 2010.

19. At 5ft3in, she rode Robert Oliver’s 17.2hh heavyweight hunter Loughkeen Dancing Lord for H&H’s gift rides. She described him as “one in a million, an absolute star”.

Top British female Flat jockey Hayley Turner is to retire at the end of the season.

Hayley has been race-riding for 15 years and confirmed the news today (Tuesday, 1 September).

As one of the most successful female jockeys of all time, Hayley secured 100 wins in 2008, the first lady rider to achieve the century.

In 2011 she became the only female jockey to ride two Group Ones in the same season with Margot Did and Dream Ahead.

“I have loved every second of my career as a jockey and I am incredibly grateful to all those that have supported me over the years especially my agent, Guy Jewell, Michael Bell, Conor Dore and James Fanshawe,” said Hayley.

“I am really excited to be starting a new chapter in my life and am very much looking forward to the new challenges ahead. I will continue to stay as focused as ever on my riding until the end of this season and will be hoping to ride as many winners as possible until then.”

Hayley, who is from Nottingham originally, started off in Pony Club and showjumping. She made her racing debut in March 2000 at Southwell and recorded her first winner at Pontefract aboard Generate.

In 2005 Hayley Turner joined the yard of Derby-winning trainer and former H&H columnist Michael Bell as an apprentice. The same year she rode 44 winners and was named champion apprentice.

Hayley has had many numerous top-level successes over the years. Her most notable wins include her victory in the Nunthorpe Stakes at York, Beverley D. Stakes at Arlington Park and July Cup on Dream Ahead at her home track at Newmarket.

She revealed on At The Races today (Tuesday 1 September) that she was “ready to leave on a high” but that she had lost her confidence following a fall on Seal Of Approval at Doncaster in 2013 which left her with back and pelvic injuries.

“I get plenty of rides and pay my mortgage, but being a jockey isn’t just a job — it’s lifestyle and it’s difficult to have a work-life balance,” she told the channel.

“I’ve done an awful lot over the past 15 years and really enjoyed it, but I feel ready to start something new. To get my teeth stuck into something else.”

She now looks set to join the At The Races team.

Hayley Turner has been released from hospital after suffering a crashing fall on Seal Of Approval at Doncaster yesterday (12 September).

Britain’s leading female jockey only returned to racing 12 days ago having broken her ankle in a fall at Yarmouth earlier this summer (26 July).

She fell with Seal of Approval when the horse clipped heels with another horse.

Hayley received immediately treatment on the course before being transferred to Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

She was kept in overnight but was released this morning after all her scans came back clear.

Hayley’s agent, Guy Jewell, said: “Hayley has been released from hospital. She’s now at home with her mum and is just battered and bruised.

“She is fine despite suffering significant soft tissue injuries.

“The CT scan and X-rays all came back clear so she just has to receive from the bruising. Hopefully, she’ll be back sooner than later.”

In 2012 Hayley became the first female jockey to win a Group One race outright, when she won the July Cup aboard Dream Ahead. She then followed it up with a second Group One win in the Nunthorpe with Margot Did.

Top female jockey Hayley Turner celebrated on Tuesday night (29 May) when she was named sportswoman of the year at the Glamour awards.

The awards, which are voted for by readers of the national magazine – indicates her growing recognition outside the racing and equestrian spheres.

Other winners at the Glamour awards included Kylie Minogue, Jessie J, Eva Longoria and Ferne Cotton.

Hayley was presented with her award by cricketer Andrew Flintoff and fought off competition from Olympic gold-medal winning swimmer Rebecca Addlington and last year’s winner, heptathlete Jessica Ennis.

Last year Hayley became the first female jockey to win a Group One race outright, when she partnered Dream Ahead in the July Cup. She followed it up with a second Group One win in the Nunthorpe aboard Margot Did.

She also won the most inspirational sportswoman gong at the Jaguar Academy of Sport Awards last summer.

And on Saturday (2 June) she will be only the second ever female to ride in the Derby, when she rides the Marcus Tregoning-trained Cavaleiro.

There will be an all-female jockey team for the first time in the Shergar Cup at Ascot this summer (11 August).

Britain’s top female jockey Hayley Turner will be joined by US jockeys Chantal Sutherland and Emma-Jayne Wilson.

They will ride against three male teams – representing Great Britain and Ireland, Europe and the “Rest of the World”.

Hayley has taking part in the Shergar Cup since 2006. She captained the Great Britain team from 2008-2010.

“The Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup has regularly reinvented itself and we thought that the time was right to break new ground by seeing how three of the most successful female riders of all time can fare against three teams made up of some of world’s top male jockeys,” said Nick Smith of Ascot.

Hayley Turner, who will captain the female team, added: “The three of us rode against each other in the Pimlico Female Jockey Challenge in the USA last year and I told Ascot straight afterwards that if there was ever an all girls’ team at the Shergar Cup, we’d definitely be keen to take part.

“I’m thrilled that it’s going ahead and having been with Chantal in Dubai last week, I can tell you that we’re both really up for putting one over on the boys!”

The format of the event stays the same, with four teams of three jockeys taking part across six races, each with ten runners.

Every jockey has five rides and points are awarded on a 15-10-7-5-3 basis to the first five jockeys to finish in each race.

The team with the highest total after the sixth race lifts the Shergar Cup and the jockeywith the highest individual score wins the Silver Saddle trophy.

Top female jockey Hayley Turner looks set to be out several weeks after breaking her left ankle at Bath racecourse yesterday (Wednesday, 31 August).

Hayley, who has been enjoying a successful season including winning two Group 1s, fell after Rose Aurora reared on the way to the start and landed on her.

Inititally she thought it was just brusing but X-rays at the Royal United Hospital in Bath showed a break.

She wrote on her website today: “What a disaster. I was riding at Bath yesterday when my first mount Rose Aurora decided to be a diva, as I got led on to the track, she reared over and landed on my leg. Ouch!!

“I was in a lot of pain and felt very sick and the ambulance team was there immediately, I then started to be a bit of a diva myself, the gas and air soon put a stop to that.

“I have now pulled myself together, it could have been so much worse, just my ankle, no head or spin injury. It’s simply part of our job, you have to cherish the highs and brush off the lows. I’ve had an amazing season and at least now I have time to celebrate it.”

She is due to have an operation today (Thursday 1 September)

And last week (Wednesday 24 August) 16-year-old jump jockey Willy Twiston-Davies also broke his left ankle, on just his second ride back after months out with a broken left femur.

Willy tweeted to Hayley yesterday “Hope you get better soon, you can come join me watching Bargain Hunt and Jeremy Kyle!”

Girls take centre stage at Carlisle racecourse next month — for the world’s first race meeting for lady jockeys.

All six races on the card on Monday 1 August are for female-only professionals, amateurs and apprentices.

The concept — thought up by Jockey Club Racecourses’ John Baker — is designed to promote the girls’ skills to the wider public and raise money for Breast Cancer Care and the Breast Cancer Campaign.

Leading Flat jockeys Hayley Turner, Sophie Doyle and Laura Pike will be riding.

Hayley said: “I hope this unique night will encourage more women into racing.”

And Sophie added: “Hopefully, some big-name trainers will fill the entries and help towards a great cause.”

Racing will be followed by a concert by X Factor winner Alexandra Burke. Tickets are priced from £13.60.

Hayley Turner became only the second female jockey in Britain ever to win a Group One race today, taking the Darley July Cup aboard Dream Ahead.

“I can’t take much credit as I haven’t sat on the horse before, but I’m delighted – absolutely delighted,” said an ecstatic Turner.

Turner was a late call-up for Dream Ahead as both regular jockey William Buick and Jamie Spencer, who often rides for the horse’s trainer David Simcock, were unavailable.

The only other female jockey to ride a Group One winner in Britain is Alex Greaves, who dead-heated in the Nunthorpe Stakes at York on Ya Malak in 1997.

Dream Ahead was a brilliant two-year-old last season, but could only finish fifth in both his starts this year – the 2000 Guineas and the St James’s Palace Stakes. This drop back in distance from a mile to six furlongs proved successful as the Diktat colt came to the front inside the final furlong and won comfortably.

Britain’s leading female jockey, Hayley Turner, returns to action at Ascot today after winning her appeal against the British Horseracing Authority’s 12-month suspension for medical reasons.

Turner suffered a bad fall on the gallops in Newmarket in March, causing her a variety of injuries and memory loss.

The BHA’s chief medical advisor, Dr Michael Turner, decided not to let her raceride for a year but the jockey, backed by trainer and Horse & Hound columnist Michael Bell and her neurosurgeon, appealed the ban.

She said: “I’m absolutely delighted. I can’t wait to get back in the saddle and I am very grateful to Dr Peter Kirkpatrick, my neurosurgeon, for all his help and support in a difficult time.”

Hayley’s comeback ride will be on Michael Bell’s Prompter in the 3.35pm at Ascot, and she also rides Great Charm for Bell in the 4.10pm.

Ffos Las, the first new racecourse to open in Wales since Chepstow 82 years ago, hosts its inaugural race meeting today (18 June).

A sell-out crowd of 10,000 is expected at the opening fixture, which is a jumps card with the first race off at 6.20pm.

Tim Long, clerk of the course, said: “We’re very happy with all the preparations and are looking forward to opening.

“The track has undergone rigorous examinations and we’ve had some great feedback from jockeys and trainers.”

Last week, the 1m 4f course, which cost almost £30million and took two and a half years to build was praised by jockeys.

National Hunt jockeys AP McCoy, Paddy Brennan and Mark Bradburne tried out the jumps track on Thursday, 4 June.

“The surface exceeded my expectations,” said Mark. “It seems to ride really well and is a lovely galloping oval track. Their first priority was definitely getting the ground right.”

Top female jockey Hayley Turner, who is currently sidelined from race riding following a fall in March, was the first jockey to test out the Flat course.

“It’s a really nice track, it’s very fair and I think it will be popular with jockeys,” she told H&H. “The bends ride well and it seems very safe — I don’t think trainers will be worried to take their top horses there. Plus the view from the grandstand is brilliant.”

Ffos Las, meaning blue ditch in English, is built on the 600 acre site of the former largest opencast mine in Europe.

The land was bought seven years ago by racehorse owner and local businessman Dai Walters and last September Northern Racing announced it would be running the course.

Nearly 800 people have already applied for annual membership, costing £100, far exceeding expectations.

The track, situated between Llanelli and Carmarthen, has nine fixtures this year — a combination of both Flat and National Hunt.

It will host 12 Flat and 16 National Hunt fixtures next year and there are currently talks of resurrecting the Welsh Champion Hurdle there.

Leading female jockey Hayley Turner will be back at the racecourse today (Wednesday 6 May) — as part of Channel 4 Racing’s team.

Hayley will be working alongside Jim McGrath and John Francome in her new role as paddock-side commentator during the 3-day Chester May meeting — which starts today.

Denise Large, programme director of Channel 4 Racing, said: “We value Hayley’s professional views on horses and are very pleased to have her on board and part of the team for the three-day Chester meeting.”

Earlier this week Hayley announced she will be lodging an appeal against her one year suspension from racing.

Last month she was stood down for a year by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) after a fall at Newmarket gallops on 3 March left her with head injuries and memory loss.

But she has recovered well saying: ““I’m feeling fine — I can’t see or feel my injuries so it’s very frustrating”.

Doctors have now permitted her to ride work and she has been riding out for the past two weeks for Newmarket trainer and H&H columnist Michael Bell.

“She’s incredibly frustrated as she feels so well — she’s determined to ride as soon as she’s given the all clear,” he said.

She will make her appeal to a medical panel chaired by Prof David Silk alongside a member of the licensing committee and an independent medical expert.

Britain’s leading female jockey, Hayley Turner, has been stood down from race-riding for a year.

Hayley, 26, was knocked unconscious in an accident on Newmarket’s gallops on 3 March.

Today she met the British Horseracing Authority’s chief medical adviser, Dr Michael Turner, to discuss when she could return to the saddle.

Dr Turner said: “Having carefully studied the results of recent tests and consulted expert opinion, I was unable to recommend that her licence be renewed until 12 months from the date of the accident.

“Hayley has recovered well from her injuries but you cannot take any chances in cases like this.”

In a statement, Hayley said: “I am absolutely devastated. I know I am very lucky to be in one piece and I will be back riding, but a year is long time.”

Hayley Turner became the first female jockey to ride 100 winners in a calendar year in 2008, and was joint-champion apprentice in 2005.

She regularly rides for H&H racing columnist Michael Bell, and is “the face of the Derby” for 2009.

An accident on the gallops in Newmarket this morning (Tuesday 3 March) has led to the death of a racehorse and the hospitalisation of a jockey.

Top female jockey Hayley Turner’s mount Old Sarum suffered a fatal injury while jumping out the stalls at Racecourse Side — the Jockey Club Estate’s training gallops in Newmarket.

The horse broke his shoulder and was put down.

Hayley, who was knocked unconscious and had facial injuries, was able to walk to the ambulance. She was taken to Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge for head x-rays.

Jockey Hayley Turner has ridden her way into the record books this week becoming the first woman in Britain to ride 100 winners in a calendar year.

The 25-year-old’s 100th win of the year came aboard 7-1 shot Mullitovermaurice in a claiming race at Wolverhampton yesterday (Tuesday 30 December).

Earlier in the afternoon she won her 99th race on Newlyn Art at Lingfield before heading to the Midlands to complete her century.
