Foal! Tiny colt born to rescued mare and named after Harry Kane has already won hearts

A newborn foal born to a rescued mare just before England’s World Cup opener has been named Kane after national football captain Harry.

The tiny colt’s name is also a nod to his dam Sugar, who was found aged two and in foal by welfare charity HAPPA, which took her in early this year.

Kane the colt arrived on 15 June, two days before his namesake scored twice in England’s first championship fixture against Croatia.

“With his wobbly legs, bright personality and early hints of a victory lap, Kane has quickly become the yard’s newest little star,” a HAPPA spokesperson said. “The football-inspired name was chosen as a cheerful tribute to his mum, Sugar, and to the excitement surrounding England’s summer on the world stage.”

Sugar arrived with another two-year-old who was also in foal, both had been abandoned unhandled and were wary of people.

“Her story makes his safe arrival even more special, marking a hopeful new chapter for both mare and foal after a difficult start,” the spokesperson said.

“Kane is already proving popular with visitors and supporters, who have been delighted by his timely arrival, his proud mum’s story, and the feel-good football connection. His name has brought smiles across the yard and added an extra reason to cheer during World Cup fever, although, for now, his main goal is staying upright.”

HAPPA head of equine operations Amanda Berry said the team wanted a name to reflect the national excitement during the World Cup, and having consulted supporters on social media, Kane was the choice, which “matched his mum perfectly”.

“After everything Sugar has been through, seeing her safely care for her foal is incredibly moving,” she added. “He is a strong, lively colt with lots of character, and while we cannot promise he will score any goals, he has certainly won everyone over already.”

The original Kane is joint third top scorer in the World Cup so far, having also scored against Panama in England’s final group game, and twice in the 2-1 round of 32 win against the Democratic Republic of Congo on 1 July.

The spokesperson added that equine Kane’s arrival is an opportunity to highlight the care and work that goes into supporting rescued mares and foals.

“Staff will continue to monitor Sugar and Kane closely as he grows, develops, and takes his first careful steps towards a healthy future, no offside decisions required,” she said.

Owners urged to act before horse welfare is compromised: elderly pony dumped in ‘unrelenting pain’ highlights growing UK problem

The “heartbreaking” case of an elderly pony dumped in “unrelenting pain” with a multitude of health issues highlights a growing problem in the UK – and the need for everyone to be part of the solution.

This is the view of the Horses and Ponies Protection Association (HAPPA), which is sharing the story of Spider, who had to be put down, as it “urgently appeals for public awareness and systemic change in response to a growing crisis, the abandonment of horses across the UK”.

“The recent rescue and heartbreaking euthanasia of an elderly pony known as Spider underscores the severity of the problem, and the agonising decisions equine charities are being forced to make in the face of suffering,” a spokesperson for the charity said.

Spider, who was not microchipped, was found having been abandoned on private land, and taken to HAPPA’s Shores Hey Farm for veterinary evaluation.

“What was discovered could not be ignored,” the spokesperson said. “Spider was elderly and burdened by a cascade of severe health issues, advanced Cushing’s disease, laminitis, extreme lameness, COPD and asthma, and a thickening in his right eye that threatened total vision loss.

“The cumulative effect of these conditions meant that Spider was in unrelenting pain and respiratory distress. Each new diagnosis revealed more clearly why he may have been rejected by whoever had cared for him before.

“HAPPA’s equine team and veterinary partners initiated a stepwise care protocol, stabilisation, pain management, diagnostics and assessment of his quality of life. But it soon became tragically evident that Spider was beyond recovery.

“Over time, his laboured breathing worsened, his mobility declined further and his pain was unrelenting. No treatment could reverse or halt the combined progression of his diseases in a way that would restore comfort or dignity. The decision to euthanise was not taken lightly, but in the interest of preventing further suffering, it was ultimately the kindest, most responsible choice.”

HAPPA head of equine operations Amanda Berry said that from a horse welfare perspective, “Spider’s case was one of the most complex and heart-wrenching we have encountered”.

But the charity added that his case is far from unique; HAPPA has seen a 33% increase in horses seized from owners “unable to cope”, 40% of these cases involve abandonment.

The 2020 report Britain’s Horse Problem, published by seven equine welfare charities, found that the horse crisis at the time was the result of a “broken system”, and said more responsible ownership, rules and enforcement were needed to “break the cycle of suffering”.

“Rescue charities are still operating in crisis mode and demand is outstripping capacity,” the spokesperson said.

“These organisations stress common themes: overbreeding, insufficient regulation, weak enforcement and owners overwhelmed by escalating costs (from feed and veterinary care to general upkeep). Without intervention, they warn the crisis will deepen, stretching the limited capacity of rescue and rehabilitation charities.”

Frustrating rescue attempts

HAPPA said charities have also been frustrated by “‘rescue attempts’ by well-meaning but under-resourced individuals, which sometimes exacerbate situations rather than resolve them”

The charity is citing the need for responsible ownership; owners must plan for horses’ long-term care, including during financial hardship.

“Charities encourage early rehoming, discussions with welfare groups or adoption through sanctuary networks rather than abandonment,” the spokesperson said.

“Local authorities must be empowered and resourced to implement equine welfare laws fully; legislation is only as good as its enforcement. Donations, sponsorships, volunteering and public advocacy are critical to sustaining rescue operations and relief capacity.

“Charities often provide advice or support to owners who are struggling before neglect becomes abandonment. Early help can prevent heartbreak later.”

Not miracle workers

HAPPA CEO Sarah Arthur said welfare charities exist partly to step in when owners fail or experience crises but “we are not miracle workers”.

“Spider’s story is a painful reminder that abandonment is not a random tragedy, it is often the outcome of systemic failure,” she said. “Under-resourced owners, weak oversight and a lack of accountability. While we grieve his loss, we must also commit ourselves to preventing such tragedies in the future.”

The spokesperson added that Spider’s story is one of many that are reminders of why the welfare charities continue their work, “standing up for the horses that others have forgotten”.

“His life, though short in HAPPA’s care, was filled with compassion, warmth and the dignity he deserved all along,” she said. “By sharing his story, the charity hopes to spark reflection and change, that no horse should ever be abandoned, neglected, or left to suffer in silence again.

“HAPPA urges everyone who loves horses to be part of the solution, by reporting concerns, supporting welfare charities and promoting responsible ownership.”

Charity warns abandoned horses are ‘on the rise’ – as two mares and their foals receive ‘second chance’

Two mares and their foals have been given “second chances and a lifetime of love and happiness” – as charity warns abandonment cases are a “growing concern”.

Last winter pregnant Welsh mares 15-year-old Ariel and six-year-old Jasmine were rescued by the RSPCA in separate cases. Ariel had lice and was suffering with an eye infection, and Jasmine was found in poor condition.

Ariel welcomed a filly, named Moana, and Jasmine welcomed a filly, named Belle. This summer the four were given “a new start” at HAPPA, where they will continue their rehabilitation.

“As soon as Jasmine, Belle, Ariel and Moana stepped onto Shores Hey Farm, the team embraced them with open arms,” said Amanda Berry, HAPPA’s head of equine operations.

“It is heart-warming to see horses that have not previously experienced love begin to trust the team. Now enjoying time in the paddocks, the foursome are coming to call after a day playing out in the paddocks.”

A HAPPA spokesperson added that although Ariel and Jasmine were separate cases, they both have “similar stories”.

“It’s a reminder of how horse abandonment is a growing concern and is on the rise across the UK,” he said.

“Jasmine, Ariel, and their foals now have the chance to live the rest of their lives free from fear. Our team is taking everything at their pace to ensure they are happy, healthy and prepared for their futures.”

The ponies will be prepared for HAPPA’s fostering and rehoming scheme.

“Importantly, Jasmine and Ariel will never be bred from again. Their futures are now safe under HAPPA’s lifelong promise of care and protection. HAPPA will continue to be a safety net for abused, neglected and unwanted equines,” said the spokesperson.

‘My heart is full’: team fights for the life of tiny foal born to abandoned mare

A tiny foal born to a mare who was abandoned while she was pregnant has been fighting for her life – as a team of people has been battling to save her.

Wotsit, a feral three-year-old 11.3hh mare was taken in by the Horses and Ponies Protection Association (HAPPA) last year, having been abandoned on common land, and found to be in foal.

The team at HAPPA’s Shores Hey Farm in Burnley, Lancashire, worked hard to get the mare’s confidence so they could support her when she foaled, and in the early hours of 9 May she gave birth to a filly, named Cheeto.

The team was delighted but that afternoon, equine care supervisor Nicole Simpson realised all was not well.

“I knew we needed to act fast to save Wotsit’s newborn foal,” she said. “I called the vet and unfortunately after a blood test it was found that Wotsit had not expressed enough milk after giving birth, therefore not providing her foal with the much-needed nutrients found in colostrum.

“This was an emergency; if the little foal did not receive the nutrients needed in the next couple of hours, things would deteriorate very quickly, possibly resulting in the foal’s death.”

Aireworth Vets sourced colostrum, thanks to donor Ess Jay Arabians, which had to be given to Cheeto via a tube into her stomach.

“Then the real work began!” Nicole said; she and the vets worked throughout the night to save Cheeto, and a second blood test showed improved levels of nutrients. Wotsit was put on medication to promote milk flow, and the team guided her foal to her teats every two hours to feed, topping up her intake with formula.

“The trust and respect the team had gained with this mare is what allowed this to happen,” a HAPPA spokesperson said. “Although she was protective of her newborn foal, Wotsit knew her little one was safe in the HAPPA team’s arms.”

The team hoped that Cheeto would thrive without further veterinary intervention.

“Unfortunately, this has not been the case,” the spokesperson said. “Since Cheeto’s birth this little one has been saved by the HAPPA heroes and Aireworth Vets on countless occasions.

“Two-hourly bucket feeds of formula milk, vet visits to tube much-needed nutrients into Cheeto’s empty stomach and treatment for faecal compaction that could have led to life-threatening colic have all been needed. The whole team has battled to save Cheeto’s life.”

The charity has appealed to supporters for donations towards the foal’s care.

HAPPA CEO Sarah Arthur said: “My heart is full of how proud I am of the dedication and compassion shown by the equine care team. It has been a real team effort to pull this little one through such a terrible start. Special thanks to Aireworth Vets who have supported us every step of the way.

“Wotsit arrived in HAPPA’s care at just three years old. It is likely that Cheeto arrived early and Wotsit was just not ready. Wotsit was abandoned, in foal, but the pair now have the best chance of survival. HAPPA will continue to care for horses when they have no one. To continue this great work, we need your support and continued generosity.”

Equine Romeo and Juliet find love – but not together – ‘just in time for Valentine’s Day’

A welfare charity has shared the stories of Romeo and Juliet who have “found love and a stable future” – although not necessarily as a couple – “just in time for Valentine’s Day”.

The Horses and Ponies Protection Association (HAPPA) have taken in Juliet (pictured, below), who had “forced herself free from her tether”, and Romeo, whose previous owner had been diagnosed with a terminal illness.

Both horses now have a “second chance of a brighter future”.

“Juliet’s story is one of sorrow,” a spokesperson for the charity said. “After a report of concern for her, due to being tethered on a tight rope with an infected eye, the charity’s equine inspectors were faced with a sad situation.

“Juliet was found running loose with another pony; it was clear she had freed herself from the tether through sheer force. This poor mare was clearly distressed and needed immediate veterinary attention for the infected eye and her poor condition.”

Juliet’s owner could not be found so HAPPA took her in under the Control of Horses Act.

“It was established that her eye had dried out and sunken into the socket due to the lasting damage from an untreated eye injury,” the spokesperson said. “Thanks to a course of antibiotics and painkillers, the eye is now stable in the socket. She won’t need an operation to remove it, although she has lost all sight in the damaged eye.”

The story of Romeo (main picture) shows the way HAPPA helped a family “in need of desperate help”.

“Under extremely sad circumstances, Romeo’s loving owner was diagnosed with a terminal illness and could no longer care for him,” the spokesperson said, adding that Romeo was being rehabilitated after kissing spines surgery and that selling him would not have been in his best interests.

“The owner’s family, with no equestrian experience, were left to care for him,” the spokesperson said. “After a call for help, HAPPA came to Romeo’s aid offering a stable to complete his rehabilitation and recuperation before assessing his future under the charity’s care. His rehabilitation and associated veterinary care will be of substantial cost.”

HAPPA equine manager Rachel Smith said Juliet had been through “unimaginable trauma” by the age of three.

“No one has the right to treat an animal in this way,” she said. “Her sight in one eye has been lost due to neglect and lack of treatment, and the lasting effects of what has happened to her are evident – she is extremely head-shy. The equine care team will work to build her confidence and help her through the journey of recovery from the trauma.

“Romeo will be given the best chance of recovery and a bespoke rehabilitation plan under veterinary advice. We will carry on his late owner’s great work. With a sweet and kind temperament Romeo had begun napping and bucking whilst being ridden, which was out of character. After veterinary investigations, mild kissing spines were diagnosed, and his owner funded the operation. This worked well but when she was diagnosed with a terminal illness and could no longer give him the care he needed, we stepped in and safeguarded Romeo’s future.”

The spokesperson said the stories show some of the ways HAPPA can intervene to help horses in need.

“Ensuring every horse is given a second chance of a brighter future,” she said. “Whether recovering from trauma physically and or mentally, HAPPA is a safety net for horses that need them the most.”

Two ‘forgotten’ cobs prompt rescue team to speak out about rise in horse abandonments

Two coloured cobs “left behind and forgotten” have been given the second chance they deserve – as welfare charity warns horse abandonments are on the rise.

Geldings Maximus and Bruno were being kept on rented land when their owners “vanished without a trace”. The pair have since been taken in by HAPPA.

“For some time, the kind landowners did their best to look after them, but as time passed, it became clear they began to struggle to meet the horses’ needs,” said a HAPPA spokesperson.

“A caring neighbour stepped in and contacted us and as soon as the cry for help was received our equine inspectors came to the aid of the two neglected horses.”

HAPPA’s head of equine operations Amanda Berry said what the inspectors found was “heartbreaking”, and Maximus and Bruno were in “desperate need of professional care”.

“Using the Control of Horses Act 2015, we were able to step in and bring them both to safety. Their hooves were overgrown, their teeth needed urgent attention and they were both overweight from a poor diet,” she said.

“But despite everything they had been through, their spirits remained strong. Now they’re beginning their journey to recovery with our expert care team looking after them every step of the way.”

Ms Berry added that the team believe that Maximus and Bruno, both thought to be 12, will make a full recovery and find forever homes through HAPPA’s rehoming scheme.

“Their story is a powerful reminder of the responsibility that comes with owning horses. Abandoning animals not only leaves them vulnerable but also places a heavy burden on those left to care for them. At HAPPA, we’re here to make sure no horse is forgotten, but we can’t do it alone,” she said.

The spokesperson added that horse abandonment is on the rise.

“HAPPA is facing an abandonment epidemic; and the charity will continue to be a safety net for those that need us the most.”

Equine charities report owners’ ‘desperation’ and large-scale rescues as living cost crisis continues

The cost-of-living crisis and owners struggling to cope continue to be major concerns for equine welfare charities, which have been helping “desperate” owners and taking in large groups of horses this year.

Although some living costs have steadied in 2024, and inflation in November was 2.6% compared to 10.7% in November 2022, families around the UK continue to face high bills and financial pressures.

World Horse Welfare reported a 44% increase in welfare cases involving owners having more than 10 horses, up from 109 in 2023 to 157 in 2024. Cases involving owners with more than 50 horses have doubled.

“This is significant because not only do these rescues fill up the centres, they put pressure on the field officer team too,” a World Horse Welfare spokesperson told H&H, adding that the charity has had to invest in more equipment such as trailers and pens to accommodate these cases.

Word Horse Welfare launched its Help for Horse Owners initiative in February with the aim of preventing serious welfare cases by providing early intervention.

“We have lost count of the people we have helped when they have nowhere else to turn and are often at their lowest ebb,” said World Horse Welfare chief field officer Claire Gordon, adding that those the charity has helped usually say they wished they had known about the initiative sooner.

“We hope by highlighting this, we can reach more of the people who are struggling now, so they know a channel exists to seek help from, without judgement.”

By the end of November Redwings had taken in 98 equines, compared to 96 in 2023 – but the charity’s rehoming figures continue to decline. It rehomed 88 equines to guardian homes – who can be returned to the charity at any time – down from 101 in 2023.

“Rehoming has taken a worrying downturn with horses who would have had lots of interest in the past receiving limited interest despite our best efforts,” Redwings chief executive Lynn Cutress told H&H.

“We presume that this is yet another result of the cost-of-living crisis, which as a charity with over 2,000 equines to look after is affecting us in every way.”

Looking at the larger picture the RSPCA reported an overall decline in the past 10 years in reports of cruelty to and neglect of equines. But the number of equines taken in since 2014 “shows a less steady picture” – peaking at more than 900 in 2014, and again in 2017. The charity reported a “continuous drop” in this number between 2019 and 2021, but said the number has risen again since 2022.

“The cost-of-living crisis may explain the rising numbers of abandonments and horses taken into care in the past few years, and it is worrying that we have seen an increase in abandonments in 2022 and 2023 – although abandonments are still less than half what they were 10 years ago,” said RSPCA horse welfare expert Mark Kennedy.

“But our research suggests that there is a growing epidemic of poor welfare in the equine population of England and Wales. Often issues may not meet the legal threshold for us to take action under current animal welfare law. But it does mean that many horses may be surviving rather than thriving – and that should concern all of us.”

South Bristol-based HorseWorld reported a 143% increase in reports made to the charity from 40 in 2014 to 97 in 2024; from members of the public, other charities, landowners, and police.

“In many calls we’ve had from owners, especially in the last 12 months, we’ve heard how they have been struggling to make ends meet for some time,” said HorseWorld’s head of equine welfare Sarah Hollister.

“It’s rarely one thing which has caused them to reach out. We’ve repeatedly heard from owners for whom the rising costs of everyday life have had a massive impact on what was already a very tight budget. It just takes one thing to go wrong, or for one unforeseen cost or illness, and they’re desperate.”

The charity also reported that the total equines it estimates “are potentially at risk” in its area has increased by 38%, from 156 in 2014 to 216 in 2024.

“Since 2014 we have been involved in a number of cases involving very large numbers at one site. For example, in 2021 we saw an exceptional peak of identifying over 600 equines being potentially at risk; caused by one case involving over 300 ponies, two cases involving over 70, as well as a number of other large groups,” said Ms Hollister.

HAPPA chief executive Sarah Arthur said the type of help needed by owners has changed.

“Reports of cruelty and neglect are still being reported, however cries for help from owners trying to do the right thing are more prevalent. We are seeing an increase of owners reaching out for help due to financial and medical difficulties. Intervention is needed by way of advice and or a sign over to ensure that the welfare of the equine is not compromised,” she said.

Ms Arthur added that when the Control of Horses Act came into force in 2015 there was an overall drop in abandonment cases; prior to 2018 approximately 40% of the equines taken in annually by the charity were classed as abandonment cases. Between 2018 and 2022 this decreased to less than 5%, but in recent years 20% of HAPPA’s intake figure is attributed to abandonment.

“The change in the demographic certainly seems to be a response to the cost-of-living crisis. Demand for HAPPA’s services remains consistent, the type of help needed is changing, and intake and rehoming figures remain balanced. Will this be a trend that continues, only time will tell,” she said.

‘Not for the faint-hearted’: could you be the right person for this equine challenge?

Four Arabs described as “not for the faint-hearted” are in need of homes with knowledgable individuals who are experienced with the breed.

The Horses & Ponies Protection Association (HAPPA) is looking for those with the skills and resources to take on one of its intelligent and sensitive, beautiful but quirky herd, as it desperately seeks to free up space.

The charity is gearing up to drive rehoming, as it fears its rescue centre will be “overrun” owing to the cost-of-living crisis. Some of its residents are still in rehabilitation and could be rehomed as projects, to “those that have got the experience to continue with their recovery and support them with behavioural issues”.

“The charity has a group of Arabs that would thrive from one-to-one [relationships] with someone that has the skill and expertise to deal with the breed and is looking for a challenge,” a HAPPA spokesman said. “The ideal people will be those with financial stability, time, patience, commitment, and dedication to build a trusting relationship.

“The Arabs at HAPPA are very high-maintenance and not for the faint-hearted; they are intelligent and sensitive, typical of the breed. The geldings were castrated late in life and have stallion-like behaviours, the mares are sensitive and highly strung with quirky personalities.

“They definitely pose a challenge, but with the right person, they will come on leaps and bounds. Arabs can be very sociable with people they trust and if you love the breed, then you will love the challenge.”

HAPPA wants to free up space to be ready to intervene; it expects to be “inundated” with requests to take in horses as the cost-of-living crisis continues.

“If people are struggling to feed themselves, the charity worries that people will be looking at downsizing other costs, such as keeping their horses,” the spokesman said.

The Arabs looking for homes are HAPPA Yelena, HAPPA Oaken, HAPPA Iduna and HAPPA Elsa.

Amanda Berry, head of equine operations at HAPPA, said: “We urge people with the know-how to come forward and offer a home to one of our special Arabs; we have three spirited mares and one boisterous gelding looking for their forever homes. We also have an abundance of coloured cobs and many others looking for that special someone.

Elf, Mistletoe, Pudding and Merry recover from ‘desperate situation’ to enjoy a happy Christmas

A donkey foal rescued with two other donkeys and a pony from a “desperate situation” has made a full recovery and the group is “on the road to a happy future”.

Last December Donkey Sanctuary welfare adviser Keira Benham discovered three-month-old Elf with his mum Mistletoe, seven-year-old Pudding, and a pony named Merry, in a field in Lancaster.

“All the donkeys had long hooves and Pudding was grossly overweight, with a cresty neck and fat pockets over her spine and ribs,” said a Donkey Sanctuary spokesman.

“The animals lived with minimum shelter to shield themselves from the wind and rain. They huddled together to keep warm in a muddy corner.”

Ms Benham said when she saw the donkeys’ feet she felt “heartbroken”.

“I was so shocked at their condition and I knew they needed veterinary care as soon as possible,” she said.

“Mistletoe’s feet were curled up. She seemed reluctant to move, and she was cautious and protective of her foal. Her demeanour suggested that she must have been in so much discomfort.”

The spokesman added that Elf’s ears were “patchy and sore” from rain scald and his legs were “scabbed” with mud fever. His hooves were also overgrown.

“After unsuccessfully trying to locate the donkeys’ owner, Keira contacted our partner organisations, and enlisted the assistance of a local vet, who confirmed the animals were suffering,” said the spokesman.

The Horses and Ponies Protection Association (HAPPA) and the Lancashire rural police team assisted the Donkey Sanctuary with the transportation of the groups. The donkeys were taken to a holding base where they received veterinary care and attention from grooms. Merry was taken in by HAPPA.

“Mistletoe is not nervous any more. At the time of her rescue, she refused to be handled but now comes to her grooms and nudges them for affection. She is everybody’s friend,” said Ms Benham.

“Pudding has come on very well too. Although she still has some confidence issues when grooms touch her ears, she is improving all of the time. She was completely head-shy when she was rescued, but now allows the grooms to touch most of her head and pick up her feet.”

Elf shares a paddock with his mother and Pudding at the holding base, and it is hoped they will be eligible for rehoming in the future.

“Elf is a dream. He is the sweetest donkey, and has fully recovered from his ailments. His coat is amazing and glossy, and the hair has grown back on his ears,” said Ms Benham.

A HAPPA spokesman said Merry has been on a “long rehabilitation journey” at the charity’s site in Burnley and is now on HAPPA’s rehoming scheme.

“Merry is a delight to have on the yard, she always comes to say hello to anyone passing her stable. Merry took to her new routine almost instantly, her calm and willing nature has touched us all, especially after she had been left to her own devices for so long,” said HAPPA equine manager Rachael Wallace.

“I truly feel she will make a fantastic foster pony and cannot wait to match her with a perfect foster carer.”

‘The rest is history’: abandoned pony enjoying new life after ‘makeover’

An abandoned pony rescued from wasteland who underwent a “makeover” is enjoying life as a much-loved companion in her permanent home.

Mandy was discovered alone in 2015, and when her owner could not be identified, she was taken in by the Horses and Ponies Protection Association (HAPPA). The 12.1hh mare, thought to be around eight years old at the time, was underweight and suffering from a skin infection, mud fever, and a lice infestation.

A spokesman for the charity said Mandy was nervous of people and the rescue team was “completely in the dark” about what interaction the mare had had with humans.

“She only trusted one person in the equine care team, Lucy, and would do anything for her. Thankfully Lucy had worked with handling feral ponies like Mandy before and was a natural with her,” said a HAPPA spokesman.

The charity launched the “Mandy makeover appeal” to raise funds towards the mare’s recovery.

“The uptake to turn this little girl back into a beauty was great. She even had Miss Lancashire Galaxy visit her with gifts for her makeover,” said the spokesman.

Having completed her rehabilitation In 2017, Mandy found her home with the Singleton family, as a companion. The family had lost a horse unexpectedly and was looking for a companion for their granddaughter’s pony.

“I looked on HAPPA’s website and went to visit a sweet little pony that I thought would be suitable. However, it was suggested that I have a look at another pony while I was there.” said Mrs Singleton.

“When I first saw Mandy I thought ‘Oh no what a grump!’. She was standing at the back of her stable, with her ears back. I was given a grooming kit and asked if I would like to groom her. To my amazement, she was brilliant and let me brush her and pick out her feet with no problems. I think she had decided she wanted to come and live with us.”

The Singleton family said “the rest is history”.

“Mandy came to live with us and is an absolute star. She settled in very quickly and is a lovely pony with a big character and attitude and is so easy to look after although she does get into mischief at times,” said Mrs Singleton.

“She is a very happy pony, loves to be out in the field whatever the weather and also enjoys walking in hand with me around the estate where we live. We love her dearly and can’t think of being without her.”

Calls to include equines in new pet abduction law

Pet abduction will be made a specific criminal offence to distinguish it clearly from other types of theft, the Government has announced, as calls are made to include equines in the new legislation.

In May the Government launched a pet theft taskforce, made up of officials from departments including Defra, the Home Office, the Ministry of Justice, and the Crown Prosecution Service. The taskforce considered evidence from groups including academics, animal welfare organisations and enforcement agencies and this month released recommendations. One of these is the creation of a new pet abduction law. The Home Office also committed to ensuring pet abduction is recorded in a “consistent manner” across police forces, and officials from each department will be able to review the way data is collected.

“The new offence will prioritise the welfare of our pets as sentient beings and recognise the emotional Sdistress to the animal in addition to its owner,” said a spokesman for the taskforce.

The new law, which will be brought in in “due course”, is part of the Government’s action plan for animal welfare announced this year, and follows a parliament debate in October 2020 calling for an amendment to the Theft Act 1968 or for a new offence to be created under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 (news, 29 October)

H&H asked Defra whether horses will be included under the new law and Defra said the details are “subject to further consideration”.

“The scope of the offence should include dogs, and the applicability to other types of animal will be explored during the development of the policy,” said a Defra spokesman.

A spokesman for welfare charity Horses and Ponies Protection Association (HAPPA) said the topic of pet theft was close to the charity’s heart following the suspected theft of Welsh mare HAPPA Lottie from her permanent loan home last year. Despite appeals, Lottie has not been found.

“We have been left wondering what has happened to Lottie for more than 12 months,” the spokesman said. “We grow concerned she has entered the welfare system once more, and could be anywhere not receiving the care, attention and love she got from her home. Her family have gone through all the motions many of us would feel at the loss of a pet, but with added angst that they don’t know what has happened to her.

“The impact of dog thefts is heavily documented in the report, but HAPPA would urge the Government to consider the theft of any companion animal. We would be pleased to see this report result in supportive legislation, but to include horses, ponies, donkeys and their hybrids.”

A Blue Cross spokesman told H&H the charity has been campaigning for years to encourage the Government and police forces to take pet theft more seriously and make it a crime in its own right. While the Blue Cross is “delighted” Defra has recognised changes to the law must be made, the charity hopes horses will be included too.

Three grossly obese Shetland pony stallions will begin their “difficult recovery” thanks to their rescue by a welfare charity.

The Horses and Ponies Protection Association (HAPPA) was alerted to the 17-year-old stallions, in Cumbria, by a member of the public. On investigation, the ponies were found to be unhandled and grossly overweight, with extremely overgrown hooves. They were taken to the charity’s Shores Hey Farm, Lancashire, on 31 July.

HAPPA equine inspector Tracy Heaton said this type of rescue does not happen often.

“The majority of the time I respond to equines who are underweight. In an extreme contrast, these three are so overweight that we needed to act immediately to ensure we put an end to their suffering,” she said.

“It is the owner’s responsibility to ensure their animals don’t get this overweight, it is animal cruelty. As with humans the effects on health can be catastrophic.”

Tracy added the temporary carer of the ponies didn’t have the knowledge to meet their needs, and she was told the owner had died from Covid-19.

“It was agreed by all concerned they needed to be signed into the care of HAPPA to prevent further suffering,” she said.

Kelly Laird, senior equine care officer, said it will be a “difficult recovery” ahead for stallions who have been named Samson, Sunny and Sol.

“We will have to manage their weight to ensure they still receive enough nutrients, but begin to lose weight. We will also have to slowly introduce exercise to their daily routine while monitoring their heart and respiratory rates,” she said.

A HAPPA spokesman added the stallions will receive a bespoke rehabilitation plan to begin their weight loss and will receive farriery treatment. The charity is appealing for donations to help purchase an equine weighbridge.

“Weight management is crucial for both the Shetlands and for all the horses and ponies in our care. A weigh bridge will give an accurate measurement of the ponies’ weight over the coming months to ensure they are on target,” she said.

A rescue pony, believed to be stolen, is still missing almost four weeks after disappearing from her field as a fresh appeal is made to help find her.

An urgent appeal was launched on 4 June after the Horse & Pony Protection Association’s (HAPPA) 12.2hh companion mare Lottie disappeared from her borrower’s home at Amberswood Common, Wigan, while grazing with two other ponies. Lottie had been seen by her borrower in the morning but on her return from work in the evening the mare was gone, and fencing appeared to have been cut. As of today (30 June) the mare has still not been found.

HAPPA welfare inspector Tracy Heaton told H&H Lottie’s disappearance had been “heartbreaking” for her borrower and for the charity.

“It’s incredibly distressing because we don’t know what’s happened to her – she has completely disappeared. It’s in my mind all of the time,” she said.

“Her borrower is tiring herself out searching every day. With the help of a colleague at World Horse Welfare we have walked miles searching fields and woodlands, putting notices up and doing everything we physically can – we’ve been everywhere. The area is so large and dense with shrubbery in parts, a pony could be kept tethered and you wouldn’t know it was there.”

Tracy said the charity has received a couple of calls from the public with possible sightings but they have turned out not to be Lottie, who is a bay Welsh with a distinctive snip on her nose.

“The police have been very good but there have been no concrete leads to follow up,” she said.

“We really need people to share Lottie’s details as much as possible with their horsey and non-horsey friends, and to bear in mind what she looks like in case they spot her. She could have even been put in a field with other horses and might be grazing somewhere but we just don’t know.”

An urgent appeal has been launched after a companion pony belonging to the Horse & Pony Protection Association (HAPPA) was stolen from her field.

Lottie, a 12.2hh bay Welsh mare with a distinctive snip on her nose, was stolen from her borrower’s home at Amberswood Common, Wigan, on Thursday (4 June). The mare, who is microchipped, had been grazing with two other ponies, who were not taken.

Amanda Berry, head of equine operations at HAPPA, told H&H Lottie’s borrower last saw the mare when she left for work on Thursday morning and discovered her missing on her return around 5pm.

“Her borrower is absolutely devastated – we all are,” Amanda said.

“She was in a secure field and the fencing appears to have been cut. If she’d escaped the others would have followed, a pony doesn’t just leave her friends.”

Amanda said a possible sighting was reported on Snapchat on Thursday lunchtime of a bay pony loose on land near Hemfield Road – a few minutes away from where she was taken – but there have been no further sightings.

“People have been searching for her day and night. There has been a drone looking for her and riders in the area have been helping too,” said Amanda.

“The worry is if she’s being hidden away somewhere. Lottie isn’t a suitable children’s pony and she can’t be ridden – we don’t want to think about what’s happening to her, we’re all frantic.”

Lottie was reported stolen to Greater Manchester Police and a post on HAPPA’s Facebook page has been shared more than 8,000 times.

“We’ve been speaking with the Blue Cross after the pony, Basil, was stolen from his borrower in Gloucestershire and found 11 days later. They’ve told us to hang in there and keep making her too hot to handle,” said Amanda.

“We have alerted the National Equine Welfare Council, and their members such as World Horse Welfare and Redwings have been sharing Lottie’s information too. Everyone is pulling together and helping to get her picture out there. We just need her found and brought home safe.”

A pregnant mare found in “desperate need” last year has given birth to a healthy colt who is lifting spirits at a charity.

Six year-old mare Khaleesi arrived at Burnley-based welfare charity the Horses and Ponies Protection Association (HAPPA) in June 2019 with her two-year-old daughter Sansa and two-year-old filly Arya as part of a multi-agency rescue.

A spokesman for the charity said the group, named after characters from Game of Thrones, arrived unhandled, extremely underweight and suffering from a severe lice infestation, and Khaleesi’s pregnancy came as an “extra surprise”.

“It was a real shock, and a shame, that in her poor condition Khaleesi was trying to support her unborn foal too,” said HAPPA equine development officer Laura Brown.

“The team ensured all three ponies received the care and attention needed, and on 22 March we were rewarded by Khaleesi giving birth to a very healthy colt.”

The spokesman said following suggestions from the charity’s supporters the colt was named Kevan, after Ser Kevan Lannister – younger brother of Lord Tywin Lannister in the TV series.

HAPPA senior equine care officer Kelly Laird said the team had been unsure how Khaleesi would react to Kevan, because she was so nervous when she arrived at the charity.

“We thought she may revert to type and this would have made it difficult for us to support her or Kevan if it was needed. But she has been a dream with all the staff and the vet, and lets us check her and Kevan daily,” she said.

“He went out for his first ‘play-out’ in the indoor arena on Monday (23 March) and has been having daily play time since. Next week he should be able to enjoy some time in fields. He is feeding very well, and like all youngsters is full of energy and mischief already.”

“The arrival of little Kevan has really lifted the spirits. Like so many other charities and businesses we are struggling, having the centre closed means a significant drop in our income. We will still continue to provide the very best for Kevan and all the horses and ponies in our care, but any support the public can give is truly appreciated in these challenging times.”

Abandoned miniature ponies take on new showing careers

Two miniature ponies that were rescued by the Horses and Ponies Protection Association (HAPPA) have been successful in the show ring.

HAPPA Little John was found tied to a tree in a remote forest in November. He had strangles and had been abandoned.

HAPPA Gandalf was found emaciated in September 2013. A member of the public alerted the charity when they found him abandoned on wasteland tethered with a chain without food or water.

After rehabilitation by the charity the ponies were both found loan homes.

And now HAPPA Foula Orlando (Little John) and HAPPA Liscombe Park Jim Hawkin (Gandalf) have embarked on a showing career.

The pair competed at the Red Rose Shetland Show at Crow Wood Equestrian Centre earlier this month (7 June), which is affiliated to the Shetland Pony Stud Book Society. Both ponies came home with ribbons and Little John secured a first place in the coloured section for best gelding.

“It was wonderful to get the boys together and they became ‘stablemates’ for the day. Their manners were impeccable with each other for a first time meeting,” said Louise Bleasdale, borrower of Little John.

“We are going to get together in the future to show them again and help promote the wonderful work HAPPA do. People were amazed when speaking to us about the ponies to be told their stories of how they came to be rescued from such terrible circumstances. We had so many wonderful comments about the fantastic condition both ponies are in.”

Natalie Lofthouse, borrower of Gandalf, added: “Gandalf has been doing really well this year, securing placings in mountain and moorland classes. He has lots of accolades including two trophies and a sash. He is a real character and loves to gallop around the fields at home keeping up with the bigger horses. He is also the boss and most definitely rules the roost; his favourite pastime is eating grass and having a little buck. He is a tiny pony with a big personality and has captured our hearts — he is a little superstar and we love him dearly.”

As the ponies were microchipped, when they were rescued HAPPA could trace their parentage and obtain passports for the ponies, enabling them to enter affiliated shows. Their owners, however, have not been traced.

Man banned from ownership after pony found starving on ‘filthy allotment’

A man has been banned from keeping animals for life after a pony and poultry were found staving on a “filthy allotment”.

David Alex Slater of Wycherley Road, Rochdale, appeared at Bury Magistrates Court on Wednesday (3 June).

The case was brought by the RSPCA. Slater had previously pleaded guilty to five allegations under the Animal Welfare Act at a hearing on 13 May.

The RSPCA was contacted by the Horses and Ponies Protection Association (HAPPA), on 1 September 2014. The organisation was concerned about a grey Welsh section A pony and a number of poultry on an allotment off Bridgefold Road in Rochdale.

“The pony was up to his fetlocks in mud, in fact the whole allotment was swimming in a horrible mixture of mud and faeces,” said RSPCA inspector Catherine Byrnes.

“The pony was very thin but the poultry were even worse. The vet said if they’d been there another five days they’d have died. When you felt them they were literally skeletons with feathers. They had severe lice infestations and scaly leg.

“All the animals had shelters but they were woefully inadequate — filthy, dark and dingy with no dry resting areas. Four cockerels were in what can only be described as a cupboard inside a shed. I couldn’t believe it when I found them living inside. It was pitch black and there were no roosting or nesting areas.

“All of the animals had access to water but it was either stale and absolutely filthy or rain water.”

Slater was also handed a 12-month community order including 200 hours of unpaid work to be undertaken at an animal charity shop. He was ordered to pay £560 in costs.

The pony remains in the care of HAPPA, which has been looking after him since he was rescued. The poultry have been rehomed by the RSPCA.

RSPCA inspector Byrnes added: “Though we brought the prosecution it would never have happened without HAPPA. We are really grateful to them.”

Equine charity HAPPA closes one of its two rescue centres

Equine welfare charity HAPPA has closed one of its two rescue centres, in order to “consolidate” its work and invest in its main site near Burnley, Lancs.

Staff at Gregory Farm, near Chepstow, have been made redundant.

The land is for sale and horses previously kept there have been rehomed or transferred to the Burnley centre, Shores Hey Farm.

In a statement, HAPPA chairman Ken Cranage said he accepted the closure had “alienated” many supporters, but the decision was necessary to ensure the charity’s survival.

Concern as equine welfare charity HAPPA shuts rescue centre

Equine welfare charity HAPPA has closed one of its two rescue centres temporarily, following abusive behaviour towards staff by local supporters.

The charity said it had come under increasing “pressure” from people living close to Gregory Farm near Chepstow due to unfounded rumours that animals in its care were being euthanased.

Carla Holgate from HAPPA told H&H they had received “a lot of negative feedback” since starting a consultation on the future of Gregory Farm at the end of last year.

“But of more concern was a verbal incident with a staff member, which was enough for the board to consider the situation,” she added.

“From the tone of the messages we were receiving, we were concerned that ill-advised people might have taken matters into their own hands and attempted to move the animals.”

Operations at Gregory Farm were shut down on 21 December and its horses and ponies were moved to HAPPA’s headquarters near Burnley, Lancs.

HAPPA supporter Jill Detheridge, who has adopted three horses at the Chepstow site, told local media she was concerned about the animals’ welfare.

“It’s a really dreadful thing to do [closing the centre] to anybody, especially to lots of young people who can’t actually find out what’s going on,” she said.

HAPPA says it has written to all current adopters. The 12 staff at Gregory Farm are on full paid leave.

In a statement, HAPPA chairman Ken Cranage said a final decision on the future of Gregory Farm would not be made until an internal consultation process with staff was completed.

The charity insisted that financial pressures “were not the primary reason” for considering the closure of Gregory Farm.

HAPPA gets four wheel drive donation

HILLENDALE Land Rover in Nelson, Lancashire, has donated a Land Rover Defender 90 to the Horse and Pony Protection Agency (HAPPA) to help the charity respond to emergency calls and rescue injured animals.

HAPPA, which celebrates its 70th anniversary this year, receives about 20 requests for assistance every week at its headquarters in Briercliffe, near Burnley.

The new vehicle will be of particular use in coming months with challenging weather conditions and consequent rising call numbers.

Ken Cranage, chairman of HAPPA, said: “This donation means we will be relieved of the cost of the vehicle and that extra money can now be spent directly on equine welfare.”

“The Arabs at HAPPA are very high-maintenance and not for the faint-hearted; they are intelligent and sensitive, typical of the breed. The geldings were castrated late in life and have stallion-like behaviours, the mares are sensitive and highly strung with quirky personalities.

“They definitely pose a challenge, but with the right person, they will come on leaps and bounds. Arabs can be very sociable with people they trust and if you love the breed, then you will love the challenge.”

HAPPA wants to free up space to be ready to intervene; it expects to be “inundated” with requests to take in horses as the cost-of-living crisis continues.

“If people are struggling to feed themselves, the charity worries that people will be looking at downsizing other costs, such as keeping their horses,” the spokesman said.

A spokesman for the charity said Mandy was nervous of people and the rescue team was “completely in the dark” about what interaction the mare had had with humans.

“She only trusted one person in the equine care team, Lucy, and would do anything for her. Thankfully Lucy had worked with handling feral ponies like Mandy before and was a natural with her,” said a HAPPA spokesman.

The charity launched the “Mandy makeover appeal” to raise funds towards the mare’s recovery.

“The uptake to turn this little girl back into a beauty was great. She even had Miss Lancashire Galaxy visit her with gifts for her makeover,” said the spokesman.

“I looked on HAPPA’s website and went to visit a sweet little pony that I thought would be suitable. However, it was suggested that I have a look at another pony while I was there.” said Mrs Singleton.

The Singleton family said “the rest is history”.

“Mandy came to live with us and is an absolute star. She settled in very quickly and is a lovely pony with a big character and attitude and is so easy to look after although she does get into mischief at times,” said Mrs Singleton.

“She is a very happy pony, loves to be out in the field whatever the weather and also enjoys walking in hand with me around the estate where we live. We love her dearly and can’t think of being without her.”

“The new offence will prioritise the welfare of our pets as sentient beings and recognise the emotional Sdistress to the animal in addition to its owner,” said a spokesman for the taskforce.

H&H asked Defra whether horses will be included under the new law and Defra said the details are “subject to further consideration”.

“The scope of the offence should include dogs, and the applicability to other types of animal will be explored during the development of the policy,” said a Defra spokesman.

“The impact of dog thefts is heavily documented in the report, but HAPPA would urge the Government to consider the theft of any companion animal. We would be pleased to see this report result in supportive legislation, but to include horses, ponies, donkeys and their hybrids.”
