Material – make sure you look for materials that suit your needs. Technical materials mean you no longer have to wear a bulky pair of gloves to keep warm. You may want to consider waterproof or water-resistant outers and fleece-lined options for those colder days. Some materials will off more stretch than others so take this into account when thinking about sizing.

Use – consider what riding you’ll wear them for as schooling, hacking and competing will all have different demands. Do you want them to be multi-purpose so you can wear them in and out of the saddle and still be able to tie up haynets and change rugs without taking them off?

Grip – silicone, leather, synthetic suede are all designed to give a better feel on the reins but which one do you prefer?

Fastening – some gloves simply slip on and off with elastic round the wrist while others have a Velcro fastening to give a more secure feeling. Make sure you try different styles so you can find out which one suits you best.

How to measure your glove size

Gloves are measured in inches. Using a tape measure, measure around the widest part of your hand (at your knuckles) without including your thumb. This measurement (in inches) is your glove size – most brands offer sizes 6–11 and include half sizes. Some brands sell their gloves in universal small, medium or large sizes, but usually have a size guide that will convert to glove sizes.

Should riding gloves feel tight?

Choosing the best children’s riding gloves depends on a variety of factors. Gloves not only keep a child’s hands warm in the winter, but they provide a better grip on the reins and protect the skin from damage – for example, if their pony puts his head down and pulls the reins through their fingers. If your child is competing or part of Pony Club, they’ll have to wear gloves for that, too.

Equetech Storm waterproof riding gloves

The Equetech storm waterproof riding gloves are a very practical-looking winter glove with a plain stylish finish. They are a chunky-looking glove with a bulky top. At £39.50 they are at the more expensive end of the market, but if you are looking for the ultimate warm, waterproof pair of gloves look no further.

These gloves fit true to size. I thought at first that they may not offer enough contact as they are a thicker glove, but when tested them I felt able to grip the reins well and had good grip. That said, I would feel more comfortable schooling in a thinner glove.

The gloves have a band of elastic around the wrist, which offers a nice level of support. After using the gloves for a few weeks, the elastic continued to feel as strong and the Velcro just as secure.

These Equetech gloves are made up of multiple layers offering a waterproof and windproof outer shell, a mid-layer waterproof membrane and an inner micro fleece lining. The combination of these materials offers a very warm glove even on the coldest windiest day whilst keeping your hands nice and dry.

The touch-screen finger feature for use with smartphones worked most of the time. This feature is really handy on cold days when you don’t want to remove your gloves.

Woof Wear Precision thermal gloves

The Woof Wear Precision thermal gloves are really stylish modern-looking winter riding gloves. Available in navy or black, I tested the navy version – it is a really nice colour that styles perfectly with the black padded areas. 

I found these gloves to be true to size. They’re a nice, snug fit that allows you to really mould your fingers around the reins while still allowing plenty of movement. They were great for schooling as I could really feel the reins. 

The gloves have a slightly thicker material around the wrist, which makes them feel really supported, with a wide, strong Velcro fastening on the back of the wrist. After testing the product for a few weeks, they continued to have the same level of support and the Velcro felt just as strong.

These gloves were breathable – they kept my hands warm enough without them getting sweaty. They are water-resistant, so perfect for use in light rain. I also used these gloves for leading in and out of the field and they had a really good grip, but again you could still feel the leadrope and hold it easily.

These gloves are suitable for machine washing at 30°C and have washed well. I think these gloves are fairly priced and look like they’re going to last well.

Ariat Tek grip insulated gloves

The Ariat Tek grip insulated gloves are a very classy, traditional pair of winter riding gloves. They are available in both black and brown, with a very plain finish with a subtle checked detail, which makes them perfect for all disciplines. At £40 these gloves are at the more expensive end of the market, but they’re a product that feel quality and will last.

The gloves fit true to size, I found them slightly long on the fingers but it doesn’t affect the way they feel when ridden in. They offer a lightweight feel allowing plenty of movement but offering plenty of support around the wrist and padding in the areas needed. The gloves took a few uses to wear in and lose their ‘new glove’ stiffness but once they had they moulded around the hands very comfortably.

The gloves are make with a Polartec stretch fleece which makes them lovely and warm, and also very soft to touch, with a hardface coating making them stronger and water resistant. I found the gloves really warm, even on a cold day when hacking slowly. They are not completely waterproof but perfect for use in light rain and kept my hands nice and dry.

The gloves offer a lovely amount of movement and grip, making them perfect for both hacking and school where more contact and flexibility is needed. I also tested the gloves for leading in and out of the field and they offer a good amount of grip.

Uvex CRX700 riding gloves

The Uvex CRX700 gloves offer a very modern, stylish look with a simple reflective pattern on the top that gives them a unique finish. At £41.99 they are at the more expensive end of the market, but with the high durability offering of these gloves, you should get your moneys worth.

The fit of these gloves is true to size. At first I thought that they may not offer enough contact as they are a thicker glove but upon testing I found them to be incredibly grippy and extremely comfortable. The stretchy material allows a nice amount of movement and enough contact to school and jump in as well and hacking.

The gloves have a band of elastic around the wrist that offers a nice level of support – and after using the products for a few weeks the elastic continued to feel as strong and the Velcro just as secure.

These gloves are made up of multiple layers offering moisture control, heat retention and wind- and water-repellency. The gloves are made of a Schoeller softshell material with an inner fleece lining. I found the gloves to be a really good winter riding glove – I found they did a good job of keeping my hands warm and it was only when temperatures really dropped that my hands felt cold.

I really like the reflective print on the backs of the gloves, which offers a bit of extra visibility when doing hand signals on the roads.

These gloves looked very well made, the material felt of high quality and they felt like they were made to last. I really liked the style of this glove in general.

Overview of performance

I felt these gloves came up just a little on the small side, I am usually an 8 and felt I could have comfortably gone up half a size, possibly because of the extra winter lining in these. They were, however, extremely comfortable and they did not feel bulky to ride in, even with the winter lining. I wore them for riding, teaching in and general use around the yard. They provided plenty of protection in the cooler weather, particularly from the wind, and kept my hands really warm. They also had really good grip. They dried quickly if they got wet without any change to the glove itself, and they’ve worn well, too. They aren’t waterproof, but I didn’t feel I had to avoid getting them wet at all cost.

Wild Farm’s likes and dislikes

The design and comfort provided by these gloves was excellent — they look both sporty and stylish. I would recommend taking a second look at your normal sizing and consider going up by half a glove size.

The gloves looked really smart and I immediately thought they looked of good quality for the price. I prefer this style to other winter gloves as some are too thick to work in and too puffy. These gloves are great as you can move your fingers and hold yard tools easier.

Overview of performance

These gloves were really comfortable and they kept my hands really warm, so I wore them for both riding and yard work. I had a small, but I could have done with an extra-small — they were OK to ride in, but I think they would have been even better if I had a smaller size. They stood up to regular wear really well and still look smart.

My first impressions were very positive — the gloves looked expensive and of good quality. I also really liked the style, especially the silicone badge on the front.

They fitted perfectly and were very comfortable — I had no issues wearing them all day around the yard and lungeing. Sadly, however, I found them too chunky to ride in and I occasionally had to take them off to do something fiddly. But, importantly, they were amazing at keeping my hands warm. I washed these gloves weekly and every time they came up beautifully with no signs of wear.

The gloves fitted nicely and were generally very comfortable to wear. I found them too bulky to ride in as it was difficult to get an effective grip on the reins. However, they were great for wearing on the yard and kept my hands really warm even when it was really cold. They washed and dried very well and stayed looking new even after a lot of use.

It was so useful to be able to use a touch-screen phone without taking the gloves off — this was great! I also found the grip on the gloves very useful. The only thing I’d change would be to make them more suited to regular ridden use. I will definitely keep wearing them next winter!

First impressions

These gloves looked well made. They are fairly plain with a distinctive emblem on the wrist tab — I think you will either like it or not, depending on your personal tastes.

Overview of performance

I tested an extra-large pair, which is bigger than I would normally wear, so it was a little difficult for me to judge the fit and sizing, but I would expect they were probably sized to normal expectations. They were comfortable to wear and were thin enough enough to keep a good feel while riding. I wore them for riding, lungeing and general yard duties — they definitely helped to keep the wind out, but I did feel a little compromised on really cold days. They dried well after use in the rain and have stood up to the use they’ve had so far.

I really liked the silicone grip to the fingers and thumbs. I would be tempted to increase the lining for warmth but, as ever, it’s a trade off for bulk over functionality.

These gloves were comfortable but I got hot in them very quickly as they weren’t very breathable. I wore them for yard work and hacking — they were particularly handy in dull/dark conditions as they are reflective. The material was strong and they stood up to regular wear, but it was quite thick, which made gripping some things tricky. They were waterproof, though, which was great!

These gloves fitted perfectly and were really comfortable. They weren’t waterproof, but they did keep my hands warm while it was dry. I mostly wore them for riding but also didn’t find them a hinderance in any way on the yard — not like some gloves that you have to take off to do things. They also washed well but took a long time to dry.

I thought the material and fit were great. The only thing I’d change is to make them waterproof because you often can’t avoid the rain in the winter.

They washed well, but were slow to dry, but they stood up to regular wear very well. I wore them for riding mostly as they were difficult to wear for some things, such as tacking up.

These gloves were lightweight, very comfortable to wear, breathable and with plenty of grip. I wore them during hunter trials and cross-country and never once lost the grip on my reins, even when the horses were very sweaty.

I really like everything about these gloves, especially how they perform. My only criticism would be that a brown pair is missing from the collection! They are good value for how well they performed and they are very multi-purpose.

These gloves offered very close contact with good airflow, but I found them slightly on the small side. They gave me a good range of movement and the reinforced synthetic suede panels on the inside of the glove where you would normally hold your reins have helped prevent wear and tear. The stitching has held up really well and still look brand new after lots of use.

I really like the style as they smart, yet very practical. My only minor dislike was that they came up slightly small and I would have preferred if they fitted further up my wrist.

While testing these gloves, I found my hands were quite warm while wearing them in the hotter weather, but since it has cooled down to more normal British temperatures, they have been very comfortable and useful. They are lacking in airflow in comparison to the other gloves on test, but they have been smart and robust enough to wear for competition and autumn hunting. They don’t quite offer the same amount of grip as some, but they have still been very useful.

I like the simple appearance and minimal detailing. I would have preferred more grip and better breathability. I’ve found they are not as touch screen compatible as the others.

These gloves are extremely lightweight and you barely even notice they are on. They have been particularly useful this summer on the very hot days we have had. They are very breathable with plenty of airflow. They had an excellent grip on the reins and are touchscreen compatible. These gloves came up fairly small on me, so would recommend ordering a size up. They also prevent tan lines on the front of your hands and wrists.

Likes and dislikes

I really liked how close they are to your skin and I never got too hot while wearing them. I found them rather tight around my wrists.

Verdict

A brilliant choice for a very hot summer or if you struggle with hot hands.

I like the colour of these gloves with the suede palm. They did offer a good range of movement and a close-contact feel. It was just a shame that they weren’t a little bigger. They are also quite expensive.

I thought these gloves looked quite flimsy and I wasn’t convinced they would be warm.

Overview of performance

The fit wasn’t great, and they weren’t particularly durable for intense riding. One of the fingers split at the seam during the testing period. The touch screen ability, which is one of their big selling points, is intermittent.

Rob’s likes and dislikes

While I liked the neoprene material, I didn’t find them comfortable to wear and they were not a generous fit.

Verdict

I wasn’t a fan of these gloves

Our reviewer found these gloves to be excellent if you like using your touchscreen phone while riding, but they took a lot of breaking in in order to make them soft

Before I begin I should say that when it comes to riding gloves, I am very fussy. I have small hands with slim fingers and dislike anything that is in any way bulky or that interferes with my ability to close my fingers securely around the reins.

On initial wear I found these gloves to not be particularly flexible and the internal seams in the fingers interfered with my ability to close them securely around the rein. The flexibility of the material did improve with time, but I was never really able to forget I was wearing them, which consider being the sign of a really good pair of riding gloves.

I typically prefer the fastening on the back of the hand (as it is here), rather than it being positioned around the wrist area, but found the material at the opening of the glove (around the wrist) stuck out quite a bit and so tended to catch on the sleeve of my jacket or top. Also on the right hand glove, the material where the Velcro flap closed on the back of my hand didn’t sit quite flat. It was a minor irritation, but an irritation all the same.

I tested these gloves during the winter when they are really designed for wearing in the spring/summer. I did suffer from cold hands from time to time, so I would say they are more suitable for wearing in warmer months (the manufacturer recommends them as ideal for temperatures above 5 degrees C).

The grip on the gloves was fairly good and I have worn them for all types of riding including hacking, schooling, cross-country and dressage. After four months of regular use, the technical fabric on the inside of the fingers is showing signs of wear, which I think is acceptable and to be expected.

Based on the size guide on the website, my hands measure 17cm from base to fingertip, which means I could wear either the small or extra small sizes. I had a small pair to test and I think that I might have got on better with the extra small. The website does advise that if your measurement is between sizes you should go for the smaller size.

These gloves have conductive fabric on the top of the forefinger and thumb, to allow you to use your smartphone without taking them off. This works well and is a bonus if you are a heavy smart phone user. However, the lack of comfort and flexibility outweighs this aspect for me and I won’t be looking to purchase a new pair when these wear out.

Verdict

If you like to be able to use your smart phone without removing your gloves, these could be a good choice, but make sure you choose the right size and don’t be surprised if it takes a few rides for the gloves to soften up

Our reviewer liked these gloves despite them not being particularly durable

I love these gloves. The Aquatec material on the fingers and palms is thin enough that you can do jobs such as tacking up and adjusting girths without taking them off, which I find extremely useful. It also allows excellent feel on the reins, but still provides sufficient grip that you don’t find your reins slipping through your fingers. No grip is lost when the gloves get wet. This makes them ideal for wearing in all weather conditions.

The gloves are available in both long cuff and short cuff versions. The ones on test were the long cuff and I think this is very much a case of personal choice for the individual. It’s nice to have the choice. I normally prefer ‘short cuff’ gloves, where the fastening is on the back of the hand, but I didn’t find the long cuff bulky around my wrist either. The Velcro is reliable and doesn’t come undone until you want it to.

The ‘climatic’ version of these gloves has a thicker, fleece-lined material across the back of the hand. This makes them more suitable for use in colder temperatures. Due to the thin material elsewhere, I wouldn’t say they were ideal for very cold, wet winter weather, but they are ideal for hacking, schooling and competing in cool weather. There is also a version with a thinner Micromesh material on the back of the hand suitable for riding in warmer temperatures.

While these are my gloves of choice, I have to admit they are not the most hardwearing. This pair lasted around three months being used five times a week for about an hour each time before developing a hole on the inside of my third finger. I wonder whether a double thickness of Aquatec material in that area would improve how long the gloves last without impacting negatively on the flexibility and feel? However for me, the benefits in terms of improved feel down the rein and the ability to use my fingers for other tasks without having to remove the gloves outweighs the fact they need replacing fairly frequently.

These gloves are sold in traditional glove sizes (there is a size guide available on the MacWet website if you’re unsure which size you are) in a choice of brown, black, green or navy.

Verdict

These gloves provide excellent feel and flexibility, but are not particularly hardwearing

Although our reviewer found these gloves expensive, they are recommend them if you want to ride with warm, dry hands

These gloves were waterproof and very warm for riding in the winter, without being bulky but they were slightly awkward to put on as the inner came away from the outer covering and got twisted on the fingers.

They were fleece lined and felt very snug.

The sizing was a little tricky. These were medium but came up much looser than other pairs of Woof gloves I have owned, and in consequence were not as neat to look at.

They had good long cuffs and the Velcro tightened them well at the wrist.

The quality overall is good although the stitching is coming apart on one finger.

They have only been used for hacking when the grip was fine, and they did not become slippery in the rain, but I am not sure how good the grip would have been for jumping, and also because they were in two layers they did not give such good “feel”.

They are quite expensive but they did keep my hands warm, so I would certainly recommend them to anyone like me, who suffers from very cold hands riding in the winter.

Verdict

Although these gloves are expensive they are worth it if you want to ride with warm, dry hands

Schwenkel has revealed its new gloves that use CeraTex effects that reportedly help to “increase the blood flow in hands by up to 80%.”

CeraTex fibres claim to “give added warmth and stimulation in the fingers” as well as “reduce muscle tension in the hands, accelerate bone healing and activate cell metabolism.”
