David Beckham’s private chef opens what may be UK’s first ‘ride-through’

If you’re out hacking in the Cotswolds and feel the urge for a coffee and cake, look no further.

A boutique farm shop in Guiting Power, Gloucestershire, has opened what may be the country’s first “ride-through”. Riders can stop off at The Cotswold Guy, call their orders in, and then collect them from handy shelves.

Owner Christopher Davey, who is also David Beckham’s and Simon Cowell’s private chef, told H&H horses and riders frequently pass his shop and “a few times, I thought I needed something for them”.

“The other week, I told my new business partner James, who’s an engineer, and 48 hours later, he’d knocked this up,” he said. “So there are the shelves and an automated payment system, and they can call orders to us. It’s got to be the first one in the country?”

Christopher added that there are plenty of horses in the area, and that one of his chefs is also a farrier, who changed careers owing to injury.

“We keep joking with him, telling him he should be out there doing any shoeing that’s needed when they stop too,” he said, adding that to mark the opening of the ride-through, he offered free hot drinks for the first weekend (17-18 February).

“Everyone loved it,” he said. “A few people were still coming on Monday so we gave them free coffees too.”

Christopher said his other branch of The Cotswold Guy, in Gagingwell, offers pizza including “The DB”, ham and pineapple, as this is David Beckham’s favourite.

Christopher will also appear in episode eight of Prue Leith’s Cotswold Kitchen, the first of which aired last Saturday (24 February) on ITV at 11.40am.

Two people and horse killed in collision on main road

Two people and a horse died in a late-night collision between a car and a carriage on an A road in Gloucestershire.

The men and the horse were declared dead at the scene on Friday (15 September).

A spokesman for Gloucestershire Constabulary said the collision happened on the A38, north of junction one of the M50, at about 11.35pm. A blue Volkswagen Golf and a horse-drawn carriage were involved.

“Two men, both from Worcestershire, who were riding in the trap, and the horse were declared dead at the scene,” the police spokesman said. “The coroner has been informed.

“No other people were believed to have been injured in the collision.”

Road closures were put in place while police carried out an investigation into the circumstances of the collision. Anyone who was in the area at the time is asked to come forward..

“Anyone who witnessed the collision or who has relevant dashcam footage is asked to contact Gloucestershire Constabulary through the website, quoting incident 563 of 15 September,” the spokesman said.

‘Now I can see the value of horses’: police force’s mounted unit saved

A police force’s mounted unit whose future was in doubt will remain in operation thanks to the value it brings – but concerns have been raised about the unit’s “harmed reputation”.

In July a review of Gloucestershire Constabulary’s mounted unit was launched by the office of the police and crime commissioner (PCC), following the appointment of the new PCC Chris Nelson. During a meeting in September, the future of the unit was on the agenda; Mr Nelson said the review had found the current model was “not optimal”, and further work was requested.

This week, Mr Nelson backed the case to retain the mounted unit, which has six horses.

“I’m clear that the mounted section should continue as is and be focused more on the area of neighbourhood policing, night-time economy, [and] things like missing people – in addition to the role that people often talk to me about, which is public order, but that’s actually quite a small part of their business,” said Mr Nelson.

The force’s horses are currently used for patrolling the streets of Cheltenham and Gloucester on Friday and Saturday evenings. They were also involved in a number of high-profile operations and investigations including a mutual aid contribution at COP26, and “providing reassurance” following stabbings in Walton Cardiff in October, and other community concerns in Frampton on Severn.

But Mr Nelson said he wants to see more “tangible intelligence” emanating from the mounted unit’s patrols, and that there are no plans to expand the unit.

“I feel it has taken an unacceptably long period of time for the unit to get up to full operational strength and capability, which in my view has harmed its reputation,” he said.

Gloucestershire Constabulary chief constable Rod Hansen said it was “very good news” to know where the force stands in relation to the mounted unit.

“Mounted units and their officers are six times more visible in our communities than any other police asset. We know that they tend to draw a large crowd, in a positive way, and we also know that they are of course very useful for large gatherings of people, whether that’s a passive or hostile crowd,” he said.

“What we want is just enough of all the capabilities that help us to keep the community safe from harm; whether that’s road policing vehicles, specialist firearms teams, patrol officers or police community support officers. We have a whole range of skills and capabilities, they’re all important. The sklll is to make sure we have just the right amount so we’re not overspending on it at the expense of something else.”

Mr Hansen said were officers not on horses, they would be patrolling the community in another way.

“It just happens to be more visibly on the back of a horse opposed to a car, where quite often we hear from the public that, ‘We might see a police officer but they’re zooming by in a car and there’s no change to engage’. Yes they come at some price, but it’s more about the value that they bring.”

Police horses to remain ‘on the beat’ after successful trial

Police horses will remain on the beat in Gloucestershire after a successful year-long trial.

The force started the trial in 2016 following independent academic research by Oxford University and the RAND Institute in Gloucestershire that showed horses are a “useful tactic” for policing.

Gloucestershire Constabulary’s mounted section will continue to be based at Highnam Court with four horses — Teddy, Barton, Boris and General — three police officers, an equine manager and a groom.

Chief Constable Rod Hansen said trust was among the reasons for retaining the unit.

“In a county so well known for its equestrian interests, why wouldn’t we be proud to bring horses back into the mix?” he said.

“We have to gain and retain the public’s trust not only by providing a professional service at times of crisis but also by being approachable and accessible at all times so that people feel confident in helping us.

“Academic findings have shown that members of the public are six times more likely to engage with officers on horseback than officers on foot offering more opportunities for people to talk to us, and share what they know or suspect.

“That for me was one of the most compelling reasons to retain the section.”

The decision was made by the force’s executive board this month and is supported by Gloucestershire’s police and crime commissioner, Martin Surl.

The force is trying to make the section as “cost neutral” as possible, through sponsorship and other work, such as helping other forces which need mounted support.

“The costs of maintaining a small mounted section are acceptable when offset against the proven benefits the extra capability brings, not least as part of an integral neighbourhood policing service,” added Mr Hansen.

“A key feature of neighbourhood policing is for us to get as close as possible to the communities we serve and we can only do that if we have their support.

“Even in austerity I want a balanced and optimised constabulary that puts the public first.”

Two die in Boxing Day horse box crash

Two people have died following a crash between a car and a horse box on Boxing Day (Saturday, 26 December).

The collision happened at about 2.30pm on the A436 between Stow on the Wold and Chipping Norton in Gloucestershire.

The driver of the black Kia car and a female passenger in the same vehicle both died at the scene.

Their next of kin have been informed.

A horse was also injured in the accident.

The A436 and Sheep Street were shut following the crash while the vehicles were recovered.

“Two people have sadly died after a collision on the A436 in Stow on the Wold,” Gloucestershire Constabulary tweeted.

Police are appealing for anyone who saw the collision to call 101 with information, quoting incident 161 of 26 December.

No other information is available at this time. H&H has contacted the police and will publish updates when they are available.

Horses on the ‘brink of death’ rescued from beauty spot

Two horses have been found “on the brink of death” at a beauty spot, forcing the RSPCA to appeal for information.

A coloured filly and a grey gelding were found on May Hill Common in Gloucestershire on 16 July.

Two RSPCA inspectors were called to the site, near Huntley, and were told by members of the public that the pair had been dumped there.

Suzi Smith, one of the inspectors that attended, said her “heart sank” when she saw the dire condition of the horses – especially the filly.

“The poor girl was filthy and weak and looked like she was on the verge of collapse,” she said.

“She was a bag of bones, her coat was alive with lice and flies were literally crawling all over her, it was horrific.”

The inspectors had a struggle to catch the filly and to load her into the trailer as she did not seem to be used to being handled.

“She buckled three times while we were doing this and I started to fear the worst but she somehow managed to get up in the end,” Ms Smith added.

“Thankfully in this case the future is going to be so much brighter for this pair — they were on the brink of death and had a lucky escape.”

Both horses were taken to a horse sanctuary in Herefordshire for specialist veterinary treatment and have settled in well to their new home.

“We do not know how they got here or why someone chose to leave them here to die but abandoning any animal in this cruel manner is a serious offence against the Animal Welfare Act,” said Ms Smith.

“We take incidents like this extremely seriously and those caught and found guilty can face a large fine and up to six months in prison.”

Why should I choose Gloucestershire for my eventing and dressage needs?

Both dressage and eventing are incredibly strong in Gloucestershire. Home to three major horse trials, the county is practically a synonym for eventing. Having said that, dressage is equally well represented, with three out of four Olympic gold medallists based in the county.

Hartpury College also hosts the NAF Five Star Winter Dressage Championships, the Festival of Dressage, the Senior Home International team competition and several other affiliated and unaffiliated events.

Other disciplines are pretty well catered for too, with Hartpury College’s Showjumping Spectacular and polo at the Cirencester and Beaufort Polo Clubs.

Where can I hone my skills?

Pammy Hutton’s Talland School of Equitation in Ampney Knowle near Cirencester offers world-class lessons in dressage, showjumping and cross-country. Training is also available at Hartpury College, and at Matt Frost and Adam Kemp’s AM Dressage in Elton.

H&H tracks down where the equestrian world’s biggest names are based — and discovers why you’ll want to head there, too

1. Gloucestershire

Celeb-spotting: Carl Hester, Charlotte Dujardin and Laura Tomlinson fly the flag for dressage, Nick Gauntlett and Zara Phillips for eventing and Nigel Twiston-Davies and Jonjo O’Neill for racing.

In vogue: South Gloucestershire is especially sought after, says Rupert Sturgis of Knight Frank, but the Hartpury area is also fast becoming a serious contender, according to Liz Langford of Fox Grant.

Property prices: Near Stow-on-the-Wold and Moreton-in-Marsh, a good home with five stables and five-10 acres costs £2-3 million, according to Rupert Sweeting of Knight Frank. The Hartpury area is somewhat cheaper.

Competitions and shows: Eventing reigns supreme, with Badminton, Gatcombe and Hartpury International Horse Trials, while polo is at the Cirencester Park and Beaufort Polo Clubs and racing is at Cheltenham.

Where to train: “AM Dressage, the home of Matt Frost and Adam Kemp, attracts riders from all over the UK and Europe,” says Liz. Training is also available at Hartpury College, Talland School of Equitation and Summerhouse, among others.

Where to hack: Gloucestershire offers plenty of good outriding, especially in some estates, such as Cirencester Park, says Rupert Sturgis of Knight Frank.

Hunting matters: 10 packs hunt in the county, including the Vale of the White Horse (VWH), the Berkeley, the Heythrop and the Duke of Beaufort’s.

2. Hampshire

Celeb-spotting: Showjumper Peter Charles and dressage supremo Jennie Loriston-Clarke both live locally.

In vogue: The New Forest is always a favourite for its scenic hacking, as is the Meon Valley, with the countryside near Alton being particularly popular for the Hampshire Hunt (HH).

Property prices: You can expect to pay upwards of £2.5 million for an equestrian property with a large American barn,well-fenced paddocks, and quality outbuildings, according to Philip Blanchard of Jackson-Stops & Staff.

Competitions and shows: Somerley Park International Horse Trials is the top eventing competition, with other events held at Mattingley and Tweseldown Racecourse. In addition, you will find racing at Tweseldown and point-to-pointing at Hackwood Park — plus polo at the New Forest Polo Club. Crofton Manor stages showjumping, dressage and showing competitions.

Where to train: Crofton Manor holds regular showjumping and dressage clinics, GB Equestrian offers dressage clinics and Rogate Equestrian Centre, on the Hampshire to West Sussex border, provides tuition in most disciplines. Tweseldown also offers cross-country schooling.

Where to hack: “Great hacking comes in abundance in Hampshire,” says Philip, with the Meon Valley Trail, Queen Elizabeth Country Park and the vast expanse of the New Forest offering miles of car-free riding.

Hunting matters: Eight packs hunt in Hampshire, including the New Forest Hounds and the HH.

3. Dorset

Celeb-spotting: William Fox-Pitt is the local star.

In vogue: The most sought-after villages among riders include Cattistock, Cerne Abbas and Buckland Newton, plus the area around Beaminster. In the north of the county, Motcombe is popular with recreational riders.

Property prices: A medium-size family house with seven acres and basic outbuildings costs from £780,000, according to Fred Cook of Jackson-Stops & Staff. A large main house, with a small cottage, some stables and up to 10 acres of land commands more than £1 million.

Competitions and shows: There’s a lively local circuit with showjumping and dressage competitions at Kingston Maurward College, the Dorset Showground and Parley Court Equestrian Centre. You’ll find horse trials at Bovington Equestrian and Bricky Farm, and three large shows — Gillingham and Shaftesbury, Melplash, as well as the Dorset County Show.

Where to train: Moreton Stables and South Coast Equestrian both hold regular dressage and showjumping clinics, Bovington Equestrian provides private tuition for experienced and competition riders while Kingston Maurward College offers diplomas in horse care and management.

Where to hack: Miles of bridleways and quiet country lanes criss-cross the county. Among the longer rides are the Wessex Ridgeway, the North Dorset Trailway and the Castleman Trailway.

Hunting matters: Dorset counts eight packs, with the vale country hunts being particularly popular. Rupert Sweeting of Knight Frank picks the Cattistock as one of the top three hunts among all the counties featured in these pages.

4. Sussex

Celeb-spotting: Showjumping’s Shane and Chloe Breen are based at Hickstead. Racehorse trainer Gary Moore is at Lower Beeding and Nick Gifford is at Findon — where Tina Cook also lives.

In vogue: The South Downs and Ashdown Forest are particularly sought after among recreational riders, the area around Hickstead draws showjumping riders, while polo players want to be near Cowdray Park, according to Chris Spofforth of Savills.

Property prices: Chris quotes £1.5-2 million for a good five-bedroom farmhouse, with five-10 acres and decent equestrian facilities, depending on location.

Competitions and shows: From the Derby Meeting to the Royal International Horse Show, Hickstead is at the heart of the equestrian calendar. Other county highlights include the Gold Cup at Cowdray Park Polo Club, Glorious Goodwood at Goodwood racecourse and the South of England Show at Ardingly.

Where to train: Coombelands Equestrian in Pulburough has excellent facilities, according to Katherine Watters of The Buying Solution. Other equestrian centres, such as Chelwood, in Nutley, also offer high-level tuition and clinics.

Where to hack: The South Downs Way and the Downs Link offer a lifetime of scenic riding. Should these not suffice, the Worth Way takes in the beauty of the High Weald, while several coastal areas, including the Witterings and Thanet, offer beach riding. Best of all, says Katherine: “Many local pubs now have tie-ups and head collars ready for impromptu visitors.”

Hunting matters: Six packs hunt across the area, including the Chiddingfold, Leconfield and Cowdray Hunt, the Crawley and Horsham and the East Sussex and Romney Marsh.

5. Devon

Celeb-spotting: This is eventing heartland, with both Mary King and Lucy Wiegersma based in the county.

In vogue: Exmoor and Dartmoor are firm favourites with equestrian buyers, followed by the South Hams.

Property prices: In Honiton, on the county’s eastern fringes, prices for a good home with five stables and five-10 acres are around £1.25-1.5 million, according to Rupert Sweeting. The further west you go, the more value you get for your money.

Competitions and shows: The Golden Horseshoe Ride takes place in Exmoor, straddling the border between Devon and Somerset. The local county show is also “very big”, according to Rupert Sweeting. Other events include horse trials and showjumping at Bicton Arena, plus racing at Exeter and Newton Abbot racecourses.

Where to train: Bicton College runs regular dressage and showjumping clinics, as well as offering an equine studies course, while Southcott Farm in Winkleigh was previously voted by Horse & Hound readers as one of their favourite venues for cross-country schooling.

Where to hack: Exmoor and Dartmoor alone provide seemingly endless opportunities for off-road hacking, but the county also has many trails (such as the Dittisham and the Tarka) and free-riding areas (Cookworthy Moor, Haldon Forest Park and Woodbury Common).

Hunting matters: Hunting is superlative with 18 packs, including the Exmoor Foxhounds and the Dulverton Farmers — and of course there’s the Devon & Somerset Staghounds.

6. Yorkshire

Celeb-spotting: Yorkshire is the cradle of the Whitaker dynasty, with John and William both based near Huddersfield and Ellen and Joe near Barnsley. Team GBR endurance rider Catriona Moon also lives in the area, as do a number of racehorse trainers, including Richard Fahey and Mark Johnston, who are based in Middleham.

In vogue: The pretty countryside between Wetherby, Harrogate and Ilkley is always sought after, although some riders prefer the wilder expanses — and cheaper acres — further north. Another popular area is Malton, just by the Howardian Hills.

Property prices: Yorkshire is huge and prices vary enormously depending on location. Being higher in the York to Wetherby corridor, they go down in West Yorkshire. Near Malton you can expect to spend about £1-1.25 million for a house with about five stables and five-10 acres.

Competitions and shows: Bramham is one of the biggest events in the local calendar, but the Great Yorkshire Show, with its showing and showjumping rings, is equally popular — as is racing at York.

Where to train: The Yorkshire Riding Centre and the Richmond Equestrian Centre both hold clinics, as well as offering private hire of their facilities.

Where to hack: With two National Parks (North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales) and a portion of a third (Peak District), the area is criss-crossed by trails — including the 205-mile-long Pennine Bridleway route linking Derbyshire to Cumbria.

Hunting matters: Hunting in Yorkshire is good, thanks to its 21 varied packs. Knight Frank’s Rupert Sweeting names the Badsworth & Bramham Moor and the Middleton as his favourites.

Curtain falls on home of Giffords Circus

The final curtain has come down at the home of the Gifford family and their circus in Bourton-on-the-Water, Glos.

For the past 14 years, Nell and Toti Gifford’s eclectic circus performances have been created at The Garden, but they have now outgrown the property and put it on the market.

The property has a two-bedroom family home and adjacent barn with office, stabling for seven horses and 11.5 acres.

The many storerooms and barns have been used for making scenery and staging rehearsals, but the property would, said local agents Butler Sherborn “suit a buyer looking to create an impressive equestrian facility”.

Viewers won’t meet any of the circus’ menagerie — which includes a Shire horse, two appaloosas and a turkey — as the 2014 show, The Thunders, is touring across the south-west until 21 September.

Teenage girl dies after falling while jumping at home

A 14-year-old schoolgirl has died after falling from her horse while jumping at her father’s yard in Quegley, near Gloucester.

Reports suggest that when Charlotte James fell, the horse she was riding trod on her chest as she lay on the ground.

A spokesman for Gloucester coroner Alan Crickmore said her grief-stricken father, Simon James, has identified Charlotte’s body. A post-mortem was carried out.

“The cause of death has been given as a severe chest injury,” said the spokesman.

Peter Rowland, headteacher of Severn Vale comprehensive school, where Charlotte was a pupil, told press: “Charlotte was a model student who was admired and respected by her fellow pupils and staff. Our thoughts are with her family at this difficult time.”

The coroner confirmed an inquest has been opened and adjourned for at least six months to allow a full investigation.

Gloucestershire landlady dies after falling from her horse

A pub landlady from Gloucestershire has died after falling from her horse.

Jan Madden, 57, who ran The Rising Sun pub for 25 years, died in hospital on Monday (5 October).

It is thought her horse was spooked by a motorbike while she was riding along Over Old Road at about 10.40am.

She was thrown from the horse and suffered serious head injuries.

Mrs Madden was taken to hospital but died later that day.

Neighbour Jean Mullins looked after Jan until the ambulance arrived. She told local website www.thisisgloucestershire.co.uk: “I rushed out to see Jan and took towels with me, she was in a really bad way.

“The paramedic was telling me what to do [over the phone] and I gave Jan mouth to mouth, but there wasn’t much sign of life. I did all I could. Everybody knows her, it is such a shock.”

A Gloucestershire Constabulary spokesman said: “The woman was taken by ambulance to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital after suffering serious head injuries. She later died of her injuries.

“This incident is not being treated as suspicious. The coroner and the woman’s family have been informed.”
