Are anatomical girths better?

They can be – it really does depend on your horse. Anatomical girths are shaped to avoid pressure on sensitive areas, especially around the elbows and sternum, which can make a big difference for horses who get tight or uncomfortable when girthed.

Some horses show an immediate improvement in movement or softness; others feel no different at all. Like most tack, it’s about finding what works for your horse’s body shape and way of going. Not every anatomical girth will suit every horse.

How to choose a dressage girth?

Start with your horse’s shape. Think about how deep the girth groove (the narrowest part of a horse’s body, behind the elbows, where the girth sits) is, how wide or narrow the chest is, and whether there’s enough clearance behind the elbows.

Look for soft materials, even pressure distribution, and enough flexibility to move with the horse. If your horse is girthy, sensitive, or changes shape easily, it’s worth spending a bit more on something with anatomical shaping or specialist cushioning.

And always check the sizing charts – height and barrel shape matter just as much as the length.

Do short girths need to be tight?

They need to be snug – but not cranked right up. With monoflap saddles, especially, it can be tempting to overtighten to stop the saddle moving, but a properly shaped girth with good elasticity shouldn’t need to be done up to the last hole.

Synthetic girths tend to be less expensive, but may not last as long or stay looking as smart as a well-cared-for leather girth.

Some of the best long girths are designed with an anatomical shape, padding and elastic ends. These additions to the standard design all aim to increase comfort and freedom of movement, ultimately to improve performance. Some designs will boast wicking, antibacterial or hypoallergenic properties, so it’s wise to consider the benefits these could bring your horse. Finally, D-rings that allow for the attachment of martingales and other training aids are particularly useful as they make tacking up quicker but also eliminate the need for a martingale to loop around the girth and sit against the skin, for example, which improves comfort.

What size girth do I need?

The length of girth you need will depend on the style of your saddle and size of your horse. You can measure your current girth, but be aware that it may have stretched. When measuring a girth, always measure from buckle end to buckle end.

The best way to measure up your horse is to put your saddle (including the saddle pad) on and use a tape measure (or baler twine and then measure that) to determine the length from the second holes on the girth straps on one side to the second holes on the other.

What is a narrow gauge girth?

Narrow gauge girths are designed to fit horses with a narrower ribcage. If the flat area between your horses elbows is less than 20cm, your horse could benefit from a narrow gauge girth. Horses with a forward girth groove are also likely to benefit from this girth design.

Do I need a girth sleeve?

A girth sleeve can be useful if your horse has sensitive skin as they can help to prevent rubbing, sores and pinching.

Girth lengths: how to measure at home

Of all the essential parts of a horse’s saddlery, the girth is often the most overlooked item. Knowing how to measure a horse’s girth correctly is vital for your safety – this is not a piece of kit that you can muddle through if it’s a little on the small or large side.

The most straightforward method of making sure you buy the right size, is to measure your old girth if it fitted correctly, or – if it’s a new horse or a new saddle – to try a friend’s to see what length fits your saddle and horse best. Your girth should naturally fit around the middle hole of the straps, to allow room for tightening a few holes – going up evenly on each side – and also to be able to do it up gradually.

Girths are measured from end of buckle to end of buckle, i.e. the full length, and normally come in two-inch increments. However, taking your old girth into the shop will ensure there’s no guesswork. Bear in mind that old girths or ones with elastic can stretch over time. Also, if the girth’s buckles are set back, as on some dressage girths, it might measure slightly longer and affect which size of girth will fit correctly.

With long billet straps and a short girth, you should have about three fingers between the top of the girth and the bottom of the saddle pad. This will keep the saddle stable and helps avoid the straps pinching or the horse’s elbow hitting the buckles.

For a long girth, the buckles should not be so high under your thigh that they feel bulky – this means that the girth is on the long side. Ideally you should have at least two billet holes above and at least one below the buckles.

How to measure a horse’s girth at home

Find a piece of string of at least 60in long or a fabric tape measure. Place your saddle, pad and whatever else you normally use under your saddle on the horse in the usual position. Pass the piece of string or tape measure from the middle hole on one of the girth straps and pass the string under your horse, about four inches back from his elbow, to the corresponding girth hole on the other side. Measure the length of the string (or consult the tape measure) in inches and this is the size girth you need.

As a very general rule, the average 15–16hh horse will use a 46–48in long girth; and around 26in short girth. However, it depends a good deal on the saddle and type of girth as well as the horse’s breed and condition.

7 tips for fitting your horse’s girth correctly

The girth just holds your saddle on, right? Actually, choosing and fitting a girth requires as much careful consideration as the rest of your tack — not every girth is suitable for every horse, and it’s always worth consulting a saddle fitter.

“The girth has to be used in the right way — if your horse doesn’t have the conformation the girth is designed for, then it will cause a bigger problem,” says master saddle fitting consultant Lauren Knott.

Once you have selected an appropriate girth for your horse, check out our top tips for ensuring comfort, safety and longevity of your girth.

1. Feel around your horse’s girth area before putting the girth on, checking for lumps, bumps, cuts, mud and dirt.

2. Always use girths with roller buckles. Rollers ensure the straps stay healthy; buckles without rollers scrape and weaken the leather each time you use them and ultimately wear them out.

3. When untacking, make sure you undo the girth on both sides before placing it over the saddle.

4. When putting the girth on, do it up incrementally on either side so that the girth is always on a similar hole each side.

5. Once the saddle is in the correct position, the girth should sit in the horse’s natural girth groove and attach to the billet straps, which it lines up with vertically. It’s imperative that the girth is attached to the correct straps; if none of the straps point directly to the girth, then new ones need to be added.

“The girth should be vertical,” says Lauren Knott. “If the girth is slightly forward or backward, then that’s a red flag it’s not fitting correctly, so speak to your saddle fitter.”

6. Ensure you regularly check that the buckles, stitching and other materials that form part of the girth, such as elastic, are in good working condition.

“I frequently see girths which have not been cleaned and consequently are rock hard with sharp edges and sides,” says qualified independent saddle fitter Steph Bradley. “Care of your girth is so important, particularly when the horse has been clipped, as it lies on such a sensitive area.”

Horse and jockey survive tack malfunction to win Welsh National

When you’re piloting half a tonne of fit thoroughbred over 23 steeplechase fences in a three-mile six-and-a-half-furlong race, the last thing you want to happen part way around is a tack malfunction.

But when Adam Wedge sauntered to victory in the Coral Welsh National aboard Secret Reprieve on Saturday (9 January), that’s exactly what he found himself dealing with.

The gelding’s girth became unattached while the partnership was jumping the third from last fence. Despite the potential distraction from the flapping equipment, horse and jockey remained straight and true to the post to take the win for local trainer Evan Williams, who is based just 40 minutes from Chepstow Racecourse, in the Vale Of Glamorgan.

Luckily, with Adam riding at 10st 1lb, there was no lead to be lost from underneath the slipped saddle, which would have resulted in disqualification upon weighing in.

“I’m not sure what happened with the saddle,” Adam said to ITV Racing afterwards. “I think the girth snapped or came undone, but thank God we’ve got the overgirth and everything stayed in place. All credit to the horse — he’s an absolute warrior.”

Adam brushed off two heavy falls in previous races on the card, in order to ride in the Welsh National.

“This win makes up for the falls,” he said. “I’m so pleased for Evan and the team as it’s the one race he’s always wanted to win.”

An emotional Evan said after the race: “It means everything to win and the man on top has been crushed twice today, so he deserves so much credit.”

Girths recalled over safety concerns

A leading equestrian clothing and equipment company has recalled two of its girths as a safety precaution.

Shires made the decision due to a query with the quality of the thread used in a “small quantity” of two models of neoprene girths.

These are the 477 Neoprene dressage girth, bought between 1 August 2015 and 21 October 2016; and the 472 elasticated web girth with neoprene lining, bought between 1 January 2015 and 31 January 2017.

At-risk stock has been withdrawn from retailers and customers have been told directly if they bought either of the products through the Shires website.

The company has also put notices out on Facebook and Twitter, and adverts in the press and through retailers who stock Shires products.

Shires is offering to replace the girths — with or without a receipt — if they are returned to its head office.

They can also be returned to the shop from which they were bought, if accompanied with a receipt or proof of purchase.

New anatomical girth from Bucas

Bucas equine supplies has added a new girth to its range of products — the Bucas Optima.

The girth’s lining is made of a high perfomance fabric, similar to a wetsuit, which prevents the girth from slipping during riding.

Fairfax girth scientifically proven to enhance equine performance

A vet is praising a tack manufacturer for testing a girth to prove its worth as a performance tool — and is urging other companies to do the same.

A paper published last month (20 August) in The Veterinary Journal showed that the Fairfax Performance Girth — used by Team GBR at last summer’s Olympics (feature, 30 August 2012) — is scientifically proven to boost performance in horses.

“There is not nearly enough rigorous scientific research into tack,” said Rachel Murray from the Animal Heath Trust, who led the writing on the paper in The Veterinary Journal.

“People accept that a horse needs to be comfortable to be at its optimum but there has been very little scientific testing into how to improve the interaction between horses and types of tack.

“Very few companies invest in research as it is expensive. I hope the publication of this paper encourages other members of the industry to follow suit, and think more about how tack can benefit both performance and welfare.”

The girth was designed after finding that high levels of pressure occur under many girths, particularly just behind the elbow where the muscles are contracting when the horse puts its foot to the floor. A girth designed to avoid this pressure point and reduce the pressures was tested on 22 World Class performance horses in February 2012.

Using the specially designed girth, there were lower pressures under the girth in trot, and gait analysis found horses wearing the girth reached further forward with their front and hind legs, and flexed the knee and hock more.

Childéric launches new dressage girth

Amerigo launches new dressage girth

Alice tried the girth with her five-year-old Faconnable, who was competing at British Dressage novice level and working towards elementary at the time.

“I like that this girth is cut back behind the elbows, but I didn’t notice any difference in my mare’s usual reaction when girthing her.

“I schooled in the girth a couple of times before a weekend competition. My horse is very short-coupled, and drops her back and draws her neck up and back towards me, especially in competition.

“Using this girth, I found she was more willing to stay up through the centre of her body, with her neck forward and down, and dropping the quarters a little to make a bridge, rather than me feeling I am riding a ditch.

“We competed at Classic Dressage in Buckinghamshire in the novice restricted classes and won both. It was 32°C and she scored 68.46% in the first test and 69.58% in the qualifier. This was our highest ever novice score. To achieve decent percentages in two tests is unusual, as we usually bomb in the first.

Britain’s secret weapon: the girth that helped win Olympic gold

A new girth being launched today (Thursday 30 August) at the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials is set to revolutionise the way riders think about girths.

At the beginning of 2011 the British Equestrian Federation, through the World Class Performance programme, were involved in the testing of a new design of girth that they felt was so influential on a horse’s performance they asked the manufacturers, Fairfax Saddles, to hold the launch until after the London 2012 to prevent details leaking to our rivals.

Tested by our Olympic eventers and dressage riders and used for Olympic competition by several team members including Carl Hester, Laura Bechtolsheimer and Mary King, this girth is now available to the general public.

What’s new: Barnsby ergonomic girths

Girth design has come a long way from the traditional string and webbing models of yesteryear. The introduction of synthetic materials, combined with the use of elastic, has helped make life more comfortable for the horse, but a totally new design by Eric Le Tixerant looks set to take equine comfort levels a step further.

Launched by Barnsby at the BETA International trade fair earlier this year, the Ergonomic Girth has an elasticated panel in the centre, which is designed to allow the horse’s ribs to expand and contract without restriction. This allows the horse to breathe more freely, preventing any unnecessary tightening of the chest muscles, which in turn can impinge on the shoulders and impair movement.

The panel is shaped to spread pressure across the horse’s sternum and reduce any risk of pinching the soft skin behind the horse’s elbows. It is lined with natural non-slip alveolar rubber to prevent the saddle from slipping, removing the temptation to over tighten the girth.

The rest of the girth is made from soft, yet durable, gently padded leather, while in the dressage version, the buckles are enclosed by hook and loop fastening covers to prevent them from coming into contact with the horse.

Suitable for all types and levels of competition, Barnsby believes that the improved mobility of the chest that the girth allows can result in an increase in the horse’s respiratory capacity, leading to improved energy and stamina levels.
