This is a really stylish padded gilet that came in a large box with multiple extras and lots of instructions.

Overview of performance

An absolutely fantastic piece of kit for those of us that spend hours on end outside working, riding and teaching. I wore this while riding and was more than warm enough without using the battery heating facility. Spending long days teaching in particularly low temperatures means it is so easy to start suffering from the cold, but with the very controllable heat source in the gilet I was so warm — it made a phenomenal difference.

Wild Farm’s likes and dislikes

I loved the fact that the heat was completely controllable from a button on the inside of the jacket, which was easily accessible and allows you to select between three levels of heat. The removable battery is very easy to use, charge and can also serve as a backup battery supply for your iPhone if necessary. The battery is on the big side, but the trade-off is more than worth it when you spend as many hours outside as we do. The sizing was quite snug for me, so it’s probably well worth trying the gilet on before purchase to make sure you are comfortable with the sizes.

Verdict

I would wholeheartedly recommend this gilet if you spend hours outside especially teaching. It’s a fantastic product and while it is a lot of money, I personally think it’s well worth it. I would kill to have a full-length (coat) version for long days teaching throughout the winter.

There are two large front pockets with flap closure, and a centre front zip covered by a storm flap, with stud fastening for added protection. This tailored country gilet is weatherproof, windproof and breathable and will keep you warm and smart when the weather gets cold. The collar has been reinforced with a soft, warm imitation nubuck material that looks good and feels great. It can be worn over a jumper or layered under a thin jacket.

First impressions

This is a great looking, all-round country style gilet, with really nice imitation nubuck style detailing around the collar, pockets and arm holes.

Overview of performance

This gilet was really nice to wear: comfortable, stylish and very practical. To be honest, it almost felt too smart to wear around the yard and the horses — I felt guilty I might spoil it. That said, it meant it was equally suitable to be worn with jeans to go out and about in any non-horsey environment.

Wild Farm’s likes and dislikes

This gilet surprised me by ending up being a real favourite. I don’t normally go for the classic ‘country’ look but I really loved this gilet. The magnetic closures on the pockets are a nice touch and, as mentioned, it really is smart enough to wear out and about away from the yard.

Verdict

I'd definitely recommend this gilet though you may find you want to keep it for best.

This gilet performed brilliantly; it is incredibly lightweight and yet warm enough to wear over a thin jumper in cooler weather, or as an under layer beneath a jacket when the temperatures drop further.

I really liked the quality and styling of this gilet, which is something Pikeur does very well. As a personal preference I would have liked zip pockets as opposed to popper closures, especially as when riding with anything in your pockets it is so easy to lose it. The stuff-bag is a nice touch and I can see lots of people finding this useful, although having mild OCD I don’t think I could ever settle for just crushing this gilet in without folding it tidily. A small is still quite generous, so it may be worth double checking sizings before purchase.

Verdict

I would absolutely recommend this gilet for its design, usability and style.

The Felix Bühler David Quilted Gilet  is a modern gilet with a stand-up collar, two-way front zip, two zip insertion pockets and one zip breast pocket. It also features a Felix Bühler emblem on the back.

First impressions

This is a slightly more traditional looking, bodywarmer style gilet. It has some nice alternating padded detailing and multiple pockets.

Overview of performance

This has proved to be a really well made classic bodywarmer style jacket. It is slightly bulkier than some of the others, so it didn’t really work as an under garment, but in isolation over a jumper in cool weather it was great.

Wild Farm’s likes and dislikes

Despite its more classic design, it was actually quite fitted and that made it much more flattering and more functional as a riding garment, so you do benefit from less bulk than you might imagine. The pockets have long tags on making them easy to open even with gloves on. Personally I prefer jackets/tops to sit on or around my waist when I’m riding, whereas this jackets tries to sit slightly lower by design, so I would have liked a drawstring or similar to allow me some adjustability.

Verdict

This is a great value for money item if you’re looking an all round gilet. It's smart enough to wear all the time, but not so expensive that you mind it getting dirty or doing its job around the horses.

This gilet performed extremely well. It functioned brilliantly as an under layer, being lightweight and slim-fitting enough to be worn under a jacket while breathable enough that you didn’t feel you were overheating when riding.

Likes and dislikes

I really liked the stretch of the fabric but I did feel that sizing was generally a little snug. The two-way zip and drawstring hem were very helpful as a riding garment, and it is a benefit to have the pockets — as equestrians we always have multiple things to carry around.

Verdict

I would definitely recommend this gilet for its performance and functionality, but I have to question the price in relation to other products in the market.

First impressions

This is a classic bodywarmer style jacket. It’s bulkier than some of the others so I’m not sure it would work as an under garment, but in its own right over a jumper it should be OK.

Overview of performance

As expected, this gilet was great worn over a jumper on cooler mornings — lightweight enough to not get in the way, but really helpful keeping you warm enough while working or riding without a full coat.

Wild Farm’s likes and dislikes

It is very classic in design, so possibly isn’t the most stylish garment, but it certainly does do its job. It features long tags on all its pockets, making them easily usable even with gloves on. It is, however, slightly longer in design than I personally like and has no drawstring to adjust it.

As an all-round bodywarmer for the yard it really does do its job; what it lacks in style it makes up for in functionality.

First impressions

An extremely lightweight gilet, with a slick design. As expected from Helly Hansen it looked like a really well made item, but I wondered what such a thin gilet could do.

Overview of performance

This really comes into its own when it’s viewed as a ‘layer’. I’ve long been an advocate of multiple thin layers, rather than one or two bulky ones, as the best way to keep warm and give maximum flexibility. This really does fall into that category. On its own it’s not incredibly warm, but brilliantly thin to function as one of many layers. It’s also great for riding because of the lack of bulk.

Wild Farm’s likes and dislikes

I really liked the lightweight design, helpful drawstring and pockets. The sizing however was very generous, especially when considering this as an under layer; a small was very much on the big side for me. It is such an easy item of clothing to throw in a bag or in the car as it takes up no space at all. While I really like the slick look outer, I wasn’t keen on the appearance of it in black.

Verdict

Recommended if you are willing to spend the money on well-designed item that it is on hand when needed.

I found the Carmen gilet very comfortable to wear both on and off the horse and kept me very warm. I was also a fan of very useful zipped pockets, which kept my essentials securely stowed while I was busy around the yard and while riding.

I really like how well this gilet fits, plus how smart and fashionable it is. There is nothing I dislike about it. I would definitely recommend it to others.

The well padded material is comfortable to wear. But I would say that it may be difficult to find someone to fit the unusual cut across the shoulders.

Generally, people fall into two camps when it comes to gilets: those who swear by them, and those who don’t see the point in them.

I always used to be the former, but over the years I’d rather lost my faith in gilets, after a few disappointing experiences. The Windermere, however, is a gilet I’m confident will be appreciated even by those who claim not to like them.

Firstly, it looks incredibly smart, especially in the royal blue that I tested. The suede outer gives it a touch of glamour, and feels really soft and luxurious, as does the silk lining. I wasn’t overly keen on the fact that the lining is bright pink, but that’s personal preference — and I mostly wore it with the zip done up anyway.

The gilet is true to size and fits nicely, and is generally flattering. It’s not too bulky — something that has put me off gilets in the past — and is cut generously around the shoulders, giving quite a good range of movement while riding. The gold zip adds to the luxury look and feel, and although I found it a little stiff it never got stuck. I also loved the faux fur around the collar – the brown looks very stylish against the blue suede.

I found it equally appropriate to wear out reporting, or around town, as well as on a horse, although I’d avoid wearing it on the yard as it’s definitely too nice! That said, the dirt and marks that inevitably appear the moment you wear any item of clean clothing around a horse, did brush off easily.

One of my main gripes about gilets is that although in theory they can adapt for many different weather scenarios, the reality can be very different. But because this one has a durable water repellent membrane added to the suede, I found that it stood up to unexpected showers much better than I expected. Twice I got caught in light but persistent rain while riding in it, and neither time did I come in feeling as soggy as I thought I would. The gilet also dries impressively quickly, retaining the softness of the suede.

The fact that I wore this gilet on a frequent basis from late August through to December is testament to how versatile it is — it made for a perfect layer on chilly summer mornings and evenings, and kept me cosy come winter with a base layer, or three, underneath.

As a size 10, the gilet I tried fitted too snugly to wear multiple thicker layers underneath, so I’d advise going up a size if you want to team it with woolly jumpers. However, because it keeps you so warm, I’m not sure you’d ever need to, especially for riding.

Verdict

All in all, the Windermere has restored my faith in gilets. It comes into its own during autumn and spring, but suits mild British summers and winters just as well. And it looks fantastic whatever the weather!

2 new products are being launched at this year’s British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA), by Treehouse Sporting Colours.

From next week (16-18 February), a new gilet will be available as part of the Helite Air Shell Range, along with a new hand cream called Outdoor Hands.

The gilet is the third product to be added to the Helite Air Shell Range, along with the Original Jacket and the Blouson.

Riding wear company Caldene has added a new gilet to its range for the spring and summer.

The “Hetton” gilet is semi-fitted and lightweight, featuring two pockets and a zip fastening at the front.
