The most recognised certification for equestrian air vests is NF S72-800:2022, the only official standard created specifically for horse riding airbags. You may also see this standard referred to as CE NF S72-800:2022 — the “CE” marking indicates that the product complies with European Union safety directives, while NF S72-800:2022 is the specific airbag testing protocol within that framework. In short: if you see either, it means the vest has passed the most up-to-date and relevant air vest safety testing for equestrian use.

Some vests are also tested to EN 1621-4 (for motorcycle airbags) or EN 1621-2 (for back protectors). These aren’t riding-specific but still confirm a high level of impact absorption, particularly for the spine and torso.

You may also see references to EN 13158:2009, the standard for traditional equestrian body protectors, not air vests. While air jackets don’t typically meet this standard, some brands use it for comparison to show their vest offers similar or better protection.

When choosing body protectors for children, it’s worth considering designs that have adjustable features so that the fit lasts that little bit longer. Children can find some body protectors uncomfortable, so finding one that’s flexible, quick to put on and easy to adjust is beneficial.

What standard do children’s body protectors need to be?

There are three levels of protection that one of the best children’s body protectors for horse riding can offer, but if you’re shopping for a child you should look for BETA level 3 (2018) as this is the highest body protector standard for horse riding. How long do body protectors last?

Under normal circumstances, a body protector should be replaced at least every three to five years because after this time the impact absorption properties of the foam may have started to decline, which means it will no longer provide your child with the same level of protection that it did the first day they wore it. Coupled with that, although even the best children’s body protectors for horse riding usually offer a good level of adjustment, it’s likely that your child will outgrow theirs and need a new one before it has reached the end of its life.

If your child has a heavy fall, check the body protector for dents immediately. The foam will return to its original shape within 30 minutes, but a dent would suggest that this part of the body protector will have lost some absorption properties and you should, therefore, replace it.

Taking good care of a body protector means that it will probably last closer to five years than three, which is handy if you have multiple children who are into riding. Avoid leaving it lying around at the yard, in the lorry where it might get damaged, and don’t store it in your hot car or damp tack room – all of these locations are likely to cause it to deteriorate faster. When not in use, it’s best to hang it up in a wardrobe at home with the zips and Velcro fastened.

When do you need to wear a body protector for horse riding?

What standard do body protectors need to be?

There are three levels of protection and, of these, the BETA Level 3 (2018) body protector standard offers the highest level. All of the body protectors we’ve featured in this guide meet this standard and are accepted by all major organisations.

There were two versions of this BETA standard – 2009 (purple label) and 2018 (blue label). They have the same level of protection, but the 2009 version ceased manufacturing in 2018. Although unlikely, you may still find these purple-labelled body protectors in stores and online, governing bodies and rider organisations, including The Pony Club and British Eventing, stopped accepting the purple label at the end of 2023, so make sure to check if your existing body protector needs an upgrade.

If you are looking to buy a new body protector, we recommend you check that it meets the 2018 version of the standard to ensure you’re able to wear it in the future, so look out for the blue label. Some products will look exactly the same and have the same name – it’s only the label that’s different.

If your sport’s governing body – such as The Pony Club, British Eventing, British Riding Clubs, or BSPS – requires a body protector, this is the version you’ll need.

How long do body protectors last?

You should replace your body protector at least every three to five years – after this time the impact absorption properties of the foam may have started to decline. If you have a heavy fall, check your body protector for dents immediately. The foam will return to its original shape within half an hour but a dent would suggest that this part of the body protector will have lot some absorption properties and you should, therefore, replace it.

How to care for a body protector

You can extend the lifespan of your body protector by:

• Cleaning it with a sponge and warm, soapy water
• Storing it in a dry, warm space, avoiding excessive heat
• Avoiding keeping it in the car as direct sunlight, excessive heat and damp will cause the fabric and foam to deteriorate more quickly
• Hanging it up to maintain shape
• Closing fastenings when not in use to prevent hair and dirt clogging them up

Body protectors and back protectors are easily confused. Although they appear alike, their functions differ significantly.

A body protector is the stronger option, offering comprehensive protection for your torso. It is designed to shield your back, chest, ribs, and internal organs from injury in case of a fall or kick. Body protectors are designed to absorb impact from a fall, a kick or being stepped on by a horse, and certain body protector standards are compulsory for competitions under the rules of governing bodies.

The body protector standards were originally developed by the British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA), with the help of riding organisations, doctors, riders, manufacturers and retailers. In 2000, the new BETA standard superseded all previous standards, but it has been revised twice since – in 2009 and 2018.

As of 1 January 2024, major governing bodies only accept body protectors that meet the latest BETA level 3 (2018) version of the standard, so if you plan to compete and your body protector is not up to standard, you’ll need to buy one of the best up-to-standard body protectors for horse riding or best body protectors for children.

What are the current body protector standards?

There are three levels of protection – and the vast majority of horse riders should look for BETA level 3, which is the highest standard of protection on offer.

BETA level 3 (2018)

This is the latest version of the BETA level 3 standard and it is marked with a blue label. It’s the standard you need to look for if your governing body or rider organisation – for example, The Pony Club, British Eventing, British Riding Clubs or BSPS – requires you to wear a body protector.

All of the body protectors we’ve featured in our buying guides are currently accepted by all major governing bodies.

What about BETA level 3 (2009)?

The 2009 version of the BETA level 3 standard (with a purple label) ceased manufacturing in 2018 and it’s unlikely that you’ll see any of these purple-labelled body protectors in stores or online.

Governing bodies and rider organisations that require a body protector no longer recognise the purple 2009 label, with most ceasing to accept this on 31 December 2023. They can still be worn if you’re competing at British Dressage or British Showjumping as a body protector is optional and no guidance for a standard is given – or, indeed, if you’re not competing at all. However, it’s recommended that you replace your body protector every three to five years and the BETA level 3 (2018) standard offers the highest level of protection.

CE marks

A CE mark which, although not a quality mark, shows that a product is fit for purpose as outlined in personal protective equipment guidelines.

Body protectors that are CE marked to EN 13158:2018 (the European standard for equestrian body protectors) are annually retested to the BETA 2018 standard, which means they consistently meet the very latest in safety standards.

What are the different levels of body protector?

There are three levels of the 2018 revision, each designed for different activities and denoted by a colour-coded label on the garment.

• Level 1 (green label) provides the lowest level of protection that is only considered appropriate for licensed jockeys while racing.
• Level 2 (orange label) is only considered suitable for low-risk situations, which does not include jumping, riding on the road, riding young or excitable horses or riding while inexperienced.
• Level 3 (blue label) is considered appropriate for general riding and competing. Level 3 body protectors should prevent minor injuries, including bruising that would have produced stiffness and pain, reduce soft tissue injuries and prevent some rib fractures.

Shoulder protection standards

There is also a BETA Standard for shoulder protectors. Shoulder pads that are sold to be worn with a particular body protector, such as the Racesafe Motion 3.0 shoulder pads, will have been tested to the same level as the body protector. Research into falls onto the shoulder during eventing competitions has shown that wearing adequate shoulder protection reduces the risk of breaking the collarbone by up to 80%.

British safety brand Racesafe has launched its first lightweight, slimline inflating gilet – the VeloAir air jacket.

“Protection shouldn’t be something you constantly notice – it should simply be there when it’s needed,” said Racesafe managing director James How. “We’ve gone to great lengths to develop an air jacket that meets the Racesafe standard that delivers confidence without compromising comfort, movement or style.”

The VeloAir meets the safety standard for equestrian airbags (NF S72-800:2022) and promises rapid inflation (in 0.095 seconds).

The bespoke airbag pattern has been designed to help maintain a slim, unobtrusive silhouette and a lighter more streamlined fit, while maintaining maximal impact absorption.

Voices in dressage tests

Rule 6.1.4.5, page 44

What’s changed: this is an interesting “non-change” insofar as BE has had to add wording saying use of the voice is prohibited in dressage tests and will be penalised with the loss of two marks for each movement where it occurs.

There is no change here – use of the voice was not previously allowed in BE tests, but because BE dressage is governed by the rules of British Dressage, which now allow discreet voice aids, BE has had to clarify that it’s still banned in eventing.

Pulling yourself up across country for safety reasons

Rule 6.3.9.14, page 60

What’s changed: for the first time the rulebook makes provision for a rider to pull themselves up across country “on grounds of safety” – the specific reasons mentioned are a loose horse, loose dog or something blocking the course – and have their time adjusted.

Previously this time adjustment has only been covered in the rulebook if the competitor was pulled up by officials (which can also still happen).

Water trays in showjumping

Rule 6.2.6.3, page 50

What’s changed: if you’re competing at novice level or above, you need to teach your horse to jump a water tray – the new showjumping course and obstacle table shows that a water tray will be used from this level upwards if available. This isn’t actually a change, but a clarification aimed at improving consistency in course design and horse education.

Tack rules

Rule 7.19.2, page 68

What’s changed: bridles without throat lashes are now allowed in the dressage (but a throat lash is still needed for the jumping phases).

Rule 7.19.2, page 69

What’s changed: two changes around nosebands. Firstly, double or dual nosebands are now allowed for the jumping phases, including Kineton nosebands/bit lifters.

Secondly, a chain on the lower strap of a grackle is now allowed in the jumping phases, but the chain must be covered for cross-country. Chains on the inner surface of nosebands are still banned.

Rule 7.19.7, page 72

What’s changed: this is not a new rule, but it has been clarified that when using a running martingale in the jumping phases with two reins, the martingale rings can only be used on the top rein.

Option to run British open championships at four-star

Annex 6, page 170

What’s changed: the option has been added for the British open to be run at four-star, rather than as an advanced. With the championships now at Hartpury Horse Trials and the CCI4*-S proving much more popular than the British open there in terms of quality and quantity of entries, it will be interesting to see if the classes are combined this year and whether that can rejuvenate the open.

Jumping fences after retirement in showjumping

Rule 6.2.9, page 49

What’s changed: the rulebook now formalises that you can “make up to two attempts to jump any single obstacle in the proper direction” after retirement in the showjumping; previously the rule only allowed this after elimination.

Continuing before the bell after being stopped in showjumping

Rule 6.2.7, page 48

What’s changed: if you are stopped by the judge or stop voluntarily in the showjumping and then continue before the bell, you are eliminated – this is unchanged from last year’s rules. However, what’s new is that at BE80, BE90 and BE100 level, you will be allowed to finish the round before being eliminated.

Eligibility for BE80 championships

What’s changed: combinations who have gained foundation points at BE100 can now compete in BE80 regional and national championships.

Qualifying after the ballot date

What’s changed: a new rule states that combinations qualifying for a championship, series or qualifier after the ballot date will only be accepted at the organisers discretion and if the timetable allows for that specific class. If necessary, a wait list may be held.

Cross-country falls on the flat

What’s changed: a new cross-country rule sets out that a fall of rider or horse and rider that is not associated with a fence is a fall on the

flat (FOF) and that any fall within the lettered elements of a combination is considered to be associated to that fence.

Vaccinations

Rule 10.2.1, page 90

What’s changed: the wording has been updated to reflect BE moving from six-monthly to annual boosters and also remind riders that disciplinary sanctions will be applied for vaccination violations.

Coaching sessions for those whose riding gives cause for concern

Rule 3.8.6, page 23

What’s changed: the wording covering what happens if someone’s riding has given cause for concern, but without resulting in a disciplinary sanction, has been updated to say that if additional coaching sessions or assessments are needed, they will be paid for by the member or associate.

Electric and push bikes

Rule 5.2.1, page 38

What’s changed: the wording has been updated so that the clause covering disciplinary sanctions if members or their connections are found to be riding or parking bikes in an unsafe manner, which includes following a horse cross-country.

What’s changed: penalties for missing a flag across country have been reduced from 15 to nine.

What’s changed: at higher level events and four-star championships, previously only marks for flying changes could be reviewed and altered when there was a difference of three points or more between judges. This has now been expanded to include halts, rein-backs and walk pirouettes.

Blood rules

Article 526.4, page 44

What’s changed: the rules around blood on the horse in the showjumping phase have been rewritten to bring them in line with the new blood rules in pure showjumping. In short, previously all horses with blood on the flanks or bleeding in the mouth were eliminated. This has been replaced with wording stating that any blood on the horse caused by the tack, equipment or athlete results in a recorded warning.

These will be issued by the ground jury in minor cases after providing the rider with the opportunity to have a hearing. There is still provision for stronger penalties where warranted as cases indicating abuse can be dealt with under that rule and in all cases of blood, the horse can only continue in the competition if the ground jury, in consultation with the veterinary delegate deems the horse fit to compete.

Whip rules and sanctions

Article 525.2, page 22; article 526.1.3, page 45; annex 1, page 87

What’s changed: the wording around use of the whip has been tweaked and separated by sanction type in terms of what offences lead to a recording warning and what to a yellow card. There is also new wording stating the whip is “not to be used to discipline the horse”.

A new Annex 1 has also been introduced “presenting all eventing sanctions in a single table for easier overview and comparison”.

Horses acting as schoolmasters

Article 504.2.1, page 19

What’s changed: previously, horses that had achieved minimum eligibility requirements (MERs) at World Championships, Olympic Games, or CCI5*s could not compete in one or two-star events in the same or following year. This has been removed “to support the development of less experienced athletes and allow experienced horses to act as schoolmasters”.

In addition, horses at junior championships now cannot have obtained an MER in World Championships, Olympic Games, or CCI5* in the current year, whereas previously it was the preceding or current year.

Dress and kit mistakes in dressage

Article 544.2.1, page 59

What’s changed: there is some new wording around “technical faults” in dressage, which includes that if a rider starts their test with a whip, boots or bandages on the horse’s legs or with discrepancy in dress (for example, no gloves), “the judge at C stops the athlete and, if needed and possible, an assistant may enter the arena to remove the item(s). The athlete then continues the test from the movement where they were stopped. The marks given before they were stopped are not changed.”

The implication seems to be that this will be penalised with two penalties rather than elimination – we have asked the FEI for clarification on this and whether it’s a change from previous rules.

An air jacket or body protector can make all the difference in a fall, but knowing how they work and when to wear them is key. They’re often grouped together as rider safety gear, but the protection they offer is very different.

So, which one do you actually need, and when should you wear both? Here’s everything you need to know about choosing between the best air jackets and the best body protectors – or using them together – depending on how and what you ride.

Air jacket vs body protector: What’s the difference?

A body protector is a foam-filled vest designed to absorb impact and reduce blunt trauma in the event of a fall, kick, or collision. It offers constant, passive protection to your back, chest, ribs and internal organs. Once it’s on, it’s ready – no activation needed.

By contrast, an air jacket is an inflatable vest that only deploys when triggered. It’s worn over your clothing (and usually over a body protector) and attaches to the saddle via a lanyard. If the rider is thrown from the saddle, the lanyard pulls a cord which activates a CO₂ canister, inflating the jacket in a fraction of a second. This creates an air cushion around key areas including the spine, neck, pelvis and sometimes the chest.

So while a body protector reduces impact force using dense materials, an air jacket reduces it by creating a pressurised air buffer – but only after a fall is in progress.

Which should you wear – and when?

Body protectors are essential for high-risk riding and mandatory in certain competitions, such as:

• Cross-country (and are mandatory in British Eventing for the cross-country phase, and over solid fences in arena eventing)
• Riding young, green or unpredictable horses
• Schooling in potentially hazardous situations

To meet current competition rules, your body protector must be BETA Level 3 (2018) standard – look for the blue label. Most governing bodies won’t accept older body protector standards (e.g. purple 2009) or lower protection levels. It’s also worth noting that body protectors should be replaced every three to five years, even if they haven’t been involved in a fall.

Air jackets, while offering excellent protection for certain injuries (such as spinal compression or internal bruising), are not a substitute for a BETA-approved body protector in any discipline where one is required, like eventing. They’re an optional, additional layer.

Air jackets are commonly worn by:

• Eventers, over the top of a body protector for cross-country
• Riders schooling or hacking who want extra peace of mind
• Experienced riders working with sensitive or high-level horses
• Riders with previous injury history seeking more upper-body protection

Some air jackets offer additional neck and pelvis protection that body protectors don’t. But remember: they only work if they inflate – and that requires separation from the saddle. In situations where you fall with your horse, or aren’t fully separated, some may not trigger in time.

Pros and cons

Body protectors:

✔ Constant protection – no need to “arm” or trigger

✔ Approved for use in affiliated competitions

✔ Protects torso, ribs and organs from impact and kicks

✔ Offers coverage even in close falls or entanglements

✖ Can feel bulky or warm, especially in hot weather

✖ Some riders find them restrictive, especially to start with

Air jackets:

✔ Lightweight and unobtrusive when not deployed

✔ Inflates to offer neck, spine, chest and pelvis protection

✔ Often more comfortable for long hours in the saddle

✔ Can reduce whiplash-type injuries

✖ Must be worn with a body protector in most competitions

✖ Requires rearming after deployment (usually by replacing the gas canister)

✖ Won’t inflate if the rider isn’t fully separated from the horse

Air jacket vs body protector: How to choose

Choosing the right safety gear depends on the type of riding you’re doing – and whether you’re competing or not.

If your discipline requires a BETA Level 3 body protector, that’s non-negotiable. Air jackets can be worn over the top for additional protection, but they don’t meet the criteria on their own and won’t be accepted in competition without a body protector underneath.

For everyday riding where safety gear is optional, the choice depends on what you’re doing and the level of protection you want. Some riders stick with a body protector for its consistent coverage, others go for the lighter feel of an air jacket, knowing it only activates during a fall, and many choose to wear both. There’s also the option of a back protector for riders who want minimal coverage without the bulk.

Fit is critical, especially if you’re combining an air jacket with a body protector. They need to work together without restricting movement or interfering with inflation. Most brands provide compatibility guidelines, and a professional fitting can make a big difference. If you can, try the gear on while mounted to check that everything moves with you in the saddle, and check that lanyards are properly adjusted.

What’s the difference between a GP and a jump saddle?

A GP (general purpose) saddle is designed for riders who enjoy doing a bit of everything. They typically have a fairly deep seat and short flaps, which offers balance and a good range of movement for you and your horse. A jump saddle tends to be more forward cut, have a much flatter seat and give you a closer contact with your horse. What’s a monoflap saddle?

A traditional (or dual flap) saddle has two flaps that sit under your leg, and the girth straps lie between them, while the stirrup leathers lay on top. If you’re shopping for rider safety gear, you might have come across two similar-sounding options: body protector and back protector. While they might seem quite similar at first glance, they’re designed for different purposes. So, what’s the difference, and which one do you actually need?

Here’s everything you need to know to make the right choice for your riding when it comes to choosing between the best body protectors and best back protectors.

Body protector vs back protector: What’s the difference?

A body protector is the more robust of the two. Designed to safeguard your entire torso, it covers your back, chest, ribs and internal organs in the event of a fall or kick. These padded vests are usually made from layers of shock-absorbing foam, and their design varies from flexible and lightweight to more rigid depending on the level of protection.

A back protector, by contrast, does exactly what it says – it protects your spine and lower back, and nothing more. These are generally thinner, lighter and more comfortable, but don’t offer the same level of overall coverage. They’re ideal for riders who want a bit of extra peace of mind during flatter work or hacking, but they’re not designed for high-risk disciplines.

Which should you wear – and when?

The simple answer is: it depends on what you’re doing.

Body protectors are best suited to riskier activities such as:

• Cross-country (and are mandatory in British Eventing for the cross-country phase, and over solid fences in arena eventing)
• Jumping young or unpredictable horses
• Backing horses
• Schooling in more unpredictable environments

From 1 January 2024, most major governing bodies will only accept body protectors that meet the latest BETA Level 3 (2018) standard.

You can spot BETA Level 3 (2018) approved body protectors by their blue label. If your sport’s governing body – such as The Pony Club, British Eventing, British Riding Clubs, or BSPS – requires a body protector, this is the version you’ll need.

Body protectors with green, orange, or the older purple (2009) labels aren’t accepted by most governing bodies. While you can still wear them for unaffiliated riding or in disciplines like British Dressage or British Showjumping – where body protectors are optional – it’s recommended to replace them every three to five years.

For full peace of mind, the BETA Level 3 (2018) body protector standard offers the highest level of protection currently available. Back protectors are a good choice for:

• Hacking
• Schooling on the flat
• Riders who don’t like the feel of a full-body protector but still want a bit of spinal protection

Body protector vs back protector: How to choose

Start by considering what kind of riding you usually do. If you’re mostly hacking or doing flatwork, a back protector may be sufficient. But if you’re jumping, eventing or working with unpredictable horses, a body protector is likely to be the safer choice.

Next, think about fit. A well-fitted protector – whether full body or back-only – should feel snug but not restrictive. It shouldn’t shift or ride up when you’re in the saddle. Many tack shops offer professional fitting services, and it’s worth taking advantage of this: a poorly fitted protector can’t do its job properly.

We recommend having your body protector or back protector fitted by a BETA-trained retailer.

Comfort matters, too. Try mounting and moving around while trying it on – can you lift your arms, sit comfortably, and would you be able to dismount easily? If not, try a different size or model. Some riders also choose to pair a body protector with one of the best air jackets for added protection.

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution, but wearing the right safety gear – every time you ride – is one of the most effective ways to reduce your risk of injury.

The best cross-country boots for horses are lightweight, fit well and offer excellent protection against impacts – whether it be from a fence or a strike from another leg. While the best brushing boots are sometimes seen on the cross-country course – usually when a rider does not take their horse cross-country regularly as they offer better protection than nothing – specifically designed cross-country boots offer a higher level of protection, and are often teamed with overreach boots where necessary.

Cross-country boots are an essential part of an eventer’s safety kit – in the same way that we kit ourselves out with the best riding hats and best body protectors, it’s important to offer as much protection as we can to our horses. We’ve rounded up a selection of the best cross-country boots on the market, and we’ve been testing them out, too.

These boots from Equilibrium are independently tested in the same laboratory as hats and body protectors for full confidence that they will protect against the typical knocks and strikes horses may get out on the cross-country course. They are flexible, breathable, and lightweight, as well as easy to wash. They also come with a one-year guarantee.

Sophie Cheeseman put these boots to the test and found that they didn’t move, slip, rotate or rub in any way. The vinyl strike pad isn’t solid in the same way that many other boots are, but it feels like it would provide ample protection to the tendons, whilst being supple enough not to restrict movement. They are at the higher end of the market, but we think they are worth the money and live up to their price point.

I tested these boots with a variety of disciplines. “They are really impressive boots with plenty of technical features and materials they gave me peace of mind weather I was jumping round XC jumps, paddling on the beach or during fast work on the gallops. Event rider Sam Jennings tested these boots, and found them to be lightweight, extremely breathable, easy to get on and off, and didn’t slip. She said “They also didn’t collect any water, which would add extra weight, and offered great protection to the leg.”

These fully vented boots from LeMieux allow air to strategically flow through the boot to keep tendons cool. They feature shock absorption and tendon support with a flexible polycarbonate strike guard, which offers great protection while retaining a lightweight profile. The new perforated lining is soft and non-slip, while an elasticated central locking strap keeps the boot secure.

When Sophie tested these boots she found them easy to put on, particularly as the middle strap is elasticated. The price for a full set is mid-market and for the quality, protection and feel of the boots we think is a very reasonable price point. We’d recommend these boots for people wanting a smart set of XC boots, with a good level of protection and a sensible budget.

They are made of Carbon Tech Microfibre leather, which is stronger than real leather, stretches and moulds to the leg. It is also lighter and machine washable. The front boots have a strike guard that runs down the back of the boot protecting the tendons and ligaments from knocks and overreach injuries, while on the hind boots it runs down the front to protect from impact with fences.

How to choose the best XC boots

Fit is extremely important when it comes to choosing a new pair of cross-country boots as a boot that slips or twists while you’re on course could be a real problem – and you don’t want the boots to rub either. Secure fastenings are also essential for a good fit and to keep the boots in place. While you want the fastenings to be strong, they shouldn’t be difficult to remove in a hurry once you’ve completed the phase.

Some boots have a rigid strike pad, while others are more flexible but may offer less protection – this is something you’ll want to weigh up while selecting a pair. As an increase in tendon temperature in fast work can lead to fibre damage, breathability and airflow are also important features. It’s advantageous to have boots that do not absorb water, too, so as to not add unnecessary drag to your horse’s leg.

These high-performance cross-country boots are designed in collaboration with MIMsafe, creators of the MIMclip. Engineered for ultimate protection and stability, they are made of materials that radiate shock away from an impact, which is new for equestrian sport. They are made from an ultra-strong outer shell that is a one-piece TPU mould to ensure maximum flexibility and freedom of movement, and offer 360° leg protection and support. The V-cut front profile is designed to reduce friction and drag upon contact with a fence.

First impressions

These boots look really smart, felt super-lightweight, and appear to be well designed with protection in all the right places. I found them a bit fiddly to fit to begin with – to ensure the V-cut front was in the correct position – but after a few attempts I was more confident. 

Overview of performance

These boots are seriously impressive, proving themselves to be tough and hard-wearing. I’ve used them for nearly a year on the cross-country course, for fast work on the gallops, and even in the sea.

I tested both the front and hind boots in size medium on a 15.2hh Irish Draught mare, and they were a great fit. My mare is super-sensitive but didn’t experience any rubs or slipping, and I believe her legs stayed cooler than in her previous cross-country boots. They were very secure and didn’t move at all.

Being so lightweight and having plenty of features to prevent them hindering movement, combined with the level of protection offered, gave me peace of mind whatever discipline we were doing. 

I liked how they offered all-round protection while staying so lightweight. They didn’t hold water and have cleaned up really well even with regular, long-term use. 

You can’t get away from the fact that these boots are expensive, so if you’re not planning to use them frequently you might be better off with a more affordable option – however, they’re excellent quality, definitely one of the best cross-country boots I’ve tried, and if you’ll get the use out of them they are a great investment.

Verdict

Super smart boots with plenty of technical features and materials that gave me peace of mind as they really keep my horse’s legs protected and cool. These boots are pricey, but a worthwhile investment for the competitive rider.

Let’s face it – men’s competition breeches don’t offer as much variety as women’s. But there are still great options out there, and we’ve found the best at every budget.

Just like the best ladies’ competition breeches, the best men’s competition breeches are lightweight, breathable, and made from technical fabrics that wick moisture, offer stretch, and provide grip and support in the saddle. With fewer options on the market, any style that sticks around is probably doing something right.

The silicone knee grip is subtle but effective, and thoughtful extras like a phone sleeve inside the pocket give them day-to-day practicality. If you ride and compete often, they’re a smart investment – just keep in mind you’re paying for performance as much as appearance.

They were tested for H&H by staff of international event rider Jo Rimmer, who found them to be comfortable and well-fitting, deeming them a “good value, smart, tough pair of breeches that are suitable for hunting, rather than mid-summer wear”.

The Shires Saddlehugger Breeches do exactly what you want from a basic pair – no frills, no gimmicks, just a solid fit and feel at a very fair price. The cotton fabric is soft and forgiving, with just enough stretch to stay comfortable in the saddle.

Also, the front is cut with a bit of extra room, which makes a difference if you don’t like anything too tight or restrictive. They’re finished with simple but effective features – fabric knee patches, velcro at the ankles – and while they won’t win awards for innovation, they’re dependable and practical, especially for everyday use or first-time buyers.

I’ve found the Velcro fastenings can rub a bit under tighter boots or against the horse’s side – and it’s worth keeping an eye on them in the wash, as they can easily pick up fluff or hair.

These breeches are a great everyday pair that combines comfort with a traditional touch. The four-way stretch fabric makes them feel light and easy to move in, and the lack of an inner-leg seam means no rubbing, even after hours in the saddle.

The knee patches are subtle but do the job, giving just enough grip without getting in the way. I rotate a charcoal and a navy pair for everyday riding and honestly have few complaints – they’re comfy, not overly tight, and they hold up well wash after wash. They’d also work well for competition, but don’t have the sleek finish of the more premium brands.

However, the pockets are a bit snug, so if you carry treats, keys, or a phone, you might want to test them first.

Can I wear dark breeches for competition?

Yes, but it depends on where you’re riding. A growing number of governing bodies – like British Riding Clubs, which introduced dark breeches in 2022 – have relaxed their rules in recent years.

Navy and black breeches are now widely accepted, especially for lower levels and unaffiliated events. Even in British Dressage, where white used to be the gold standard, a recent rule now allows wearing dark solid colours and contrast seats, as long as the look remains tidy and understated.

Eventing Ireland (EI) and British Eventing (BE) also permit the wearing of dark and navy breeches in all three phases. But for anything else, it’s always worth double-checking the latest rulebook for your discipline before show day.

Full-seat or knee-patch – what’s actually better for men?

There’s no universal answer, but here’s a rule of thumb: full-seat breeches give you more grip and stability, which is great for dressage or if you like feeling anchored in the saddle. Knee patches give you more freedom to move, making them a better fit for jumping or mixed disciplines. If you’re new to competing, try both and see what feels right – some riders even switch depending on the phase or horse.

What features really matter in a good pair of men’s breeches?

Fit is top priority – comfort and confidence start with how they feel. Look for a waistband that doesn’t dig in or sag, and leg panels that don’t bunch under boots. Grip material is next: modern silicone often beats traditional suede for a lighter, more flexible hold. And don’t underestimate fabric – four-way stretch, breathable materials are game-changers when you’re riding multiple horses or out all day. Pockets are a personal thing, but once you’ve had a secure phone pocket, it’s hard to go back.

Can I wear dark breeches in competition?

Wearing dark breeches is permitted in some cases, as some competition bodies have updated their rules in recent years. These changes have included the relaxation of dress code. Some bodies now allow black and navy breeches in competition, while others now accept coloured jackets, or those with embellishments such as diamanté.

Following rule changes in the US, British Riding Clubs (BRC) introduced black and navy breeches into their dress code in late 2022. British Dressage (BD) updated their 2024 handbook to say ‘Breeches or jodhpurs should predominantly be of a solid, single colour. Dark-coloured contrast seats are permitted. Stripes or bold patterned breeches or jodhpurs are not allowed.’

Eventing Ireland (EI) and British Eventing (BE) also permit the wearing of dark and navy breeches in all three phases. This rule applies to national and training competitions.

Full-seat vs knee-patch breeches

Full-seat breeches tend to be favoured by riders who hack or do dressage as they are great for helping you stay secure in the saddle by promoting stillness from your seat down. For this reason, they can be a little more restrictive and can make it harder to adjust your position. Knee-patch breeches only have grip at the knee – this offers less security, but makes it easier to come out of the saddle and adopt the two-point position if you’re jumping. Traditionally the seat or patches were suede, but more recently variations of silicone grip have become more popular.

If you’re thinking about entering your first-ever unaffiliated one-day event or you’ve been out of the game a while but have just signed back up with British Eventing (BE), then you might be wondering what to wear for eventing to make sure you’re well prepared for the big day.

Correct dress at competitions depends slightly on the level at which you are competing and whether you’re going affiliated or unaffiliated. If you’ve got an unaffiliated event in mind, their guidelines will be based on the affiliated rules, which you can skip down to read about in full. What to wear for eventing

Exactly what’s required for each phase is a combination of safety, tradition and rider comfort, however, at lower levels you will wear the same for the dressage and showjumping.

In short, you’ll need the following items, but we’ve got lots more information on the specific rules, including for each discipline and level, below:

• stock or tie – it’s up to you, but stocks are more common (tradition suggests to wear white with black/navy jacket but coloured with tweed)
• gloves – make sure you’ve got good grip, especially for cross-country. (See our guide to the best riding gloves)
• base layer – any colour, long sleeves recommended. (See our guide to the best base layers)
• body protector – must be BETA level 3 (2018), air jackets optional. (See our guide to the best body protectors)
• number bib – it’s best to get some bib numbers, too, in case you need to provide your own
• stopwatch – optional, but can be useful

Other important tips

• Stocks should always be tied properly
• Long hair should be secured appropriately – tied back and in a hairnet
• Competitors are advised to remove jewellery

What to wear at an unaffiliated eventing competition

You won’t go wrong if you adhere to the affiliated rulebook, as described below. However, the dress code tends to be more lenient at local unaffiliated shows. Whatever the level of show, you’ll want to be smartly turned out in jacket, breeches and stock or tie for the dressage and showjumping phases. For cross-country, a body protector is mandatory and you can choose your cross-country colours, although long sleeves are recommended.

Your best best is to stick to the list above, and if you want to wear something different – for example, different coloured breeches – contact the show secretary to check that it is permitted. You will also need to find out what sort of bib numbers are required – some shows provide bib numbers, others will ask you to print them out at home.

Two items that are essential whatever the code, are a hat that meets the current riding hat safety standards and a body protector that has the blue BETA Level 3 (2018) label, which shows it meets the current body protector safety standards.

If you wish to wear an inflatable/air jacket, for cross-country it must be worn over a permitted body protector.

What to wear for affiliated eventing

Hats

In a nutshell: For dressage and showjumping, as long as your riding hat is up to standard you can wear any style. For cross-country, however, you’ll need a jockey skull, which you can wear for all three phases if you’d like.

More specifically:

• Protective headwear must be worn by anyone mounted at a BE competition, with the harness correctly fastened.
• All hats must be tagged with a visible current BE (or Pony Club/British Riding Clubs) tag.

The hat must meet at least one of the following standards:

• – British and European: PAS 015 (2011), VG01.040 2014-12 or BS EN1384:2023, all with BSI Kitemark or Inspec IC Mark
• – American: ASTM F1163 15 or 23 with SEI Mark or SNELL 2016 or 2021
• – Australian and New Zealand: AS/NZS 3838 2006 onwards with SAI Global Mark
• Cross-country headwear must have no peak or peak-type extensions. Protuberances above the eyes limited to 5mm max and must be smooth or rounded in nature. A removable hat cover with light flexible peak is permitted.

Spurs

In a nutshell: These are optional at all levels.

More specifically:

• Must be smooth metal, blunt and incapable of wounding a horse.
• Shank must be no longer than 4cm long and must point to the rear and downwards.
• Metal spurs with round plastic, metal or rubber knobs are not permitted.
• Rowel spurs are permitted but not in young horse classes.
• Tines and Spursuader spurs are not permitted.

What to wear for eventing dressage and showjumping

For all classes, competitors should wear:

• Protective headwear of any colour
• Jackets may be any single conservative colour in muted tones. Subtle pinstripes, piping and coloured collars are permitted, as is contrast piping to the collar, lapels, pockets and vents. Tweed should not be brightly coloured or boldly patterned. Navy jackets with red collar and white piping are reserved solely for British team members
• If a waistcoat is worn, it must be in a conservative colour with muted tones.
• Long or short-sleeved shirt that fastens at the neck (white, cream or conservative/muted colour)
• Tie, American collar or correctly fastened stock
• Breeches in white, buff, fawn, navy or black
• Gloves – mandatory for the dressage phase only
• Plain dark boots of any conservative colour or topped boots or full grain smooth dark leather gaiters of any conservative colour with matching boots
• Below intermediate, riders can wear brown boots or brown leather gaiters with matching boots
• For ONu18 classes, riders under the age of 16 may wear jodhpur boots with matching plain black or brown half chaps
• Or, uniform with protective headwear

For advanced; advanced intermediate; and intermediate championships; in addition to the above:

• The option of a black or dark blue tailcoat. Jackets of official national colours may be worn
• Plain black/brown boots or full grain smooth black/brown leather gaiters with matching boots or topped boots

Things to note

Whips are not permitted in any form during the dressage test. One whip, no longer than 120cm including lash, maybe carried while riding on the flat.

The type of bib number worn is at the discretion of the organiser. Competitors may need to produce their own bib number.

One whip, maximum length 75cm and not weighted, may be carried for the showjumping phase.

What to wear for cross-country

Competitors should wear a sweatshirt, shirt or base layer. Long sleeves are strongly recommended.

Breeches and boots rules are as the dressage and showjumping phases.

Safety wear

At all levels, protective headwear with no peak and a cover should be worn.

Body protectors are mandatory and must be British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) approved, labelled as Level 3 (2018). Exo Body Cages can be worn but must be declared to the event secretary before going cross-country.

Air jackets are optional, but must be worn over a permitted body protector if you want to wear one for the cross-country phase. However, they can be worn for showjumping and dressage without the body protector.

Things to note

One whip, maximum length 75cm and not weighted, may be carried for the cross-country phase.

Bib numbers must be worn and be clearly visible from in front and behind.

The best tendon boots for horses provide the backs of your horse’s forelegs with support and protection from strikes and blows that are caused by clashing opposing legs and hind hooves. This part of your horse’s leg is particularly vulnerable to injury as the majority of the tendons and ligaments run down the back of the leg.

As they’re made with shockproof materials, tendon boots are usually fairly rigid but they should not affect your horse’s ability to flex his joints – and it’s helpful if they’re lightweight, too. It’s important they sit comfortably and don’t cause rubbing, plus many are designed with ventilating materials to prevent heat build up. Open-fronted boots are particularly popular in showjumping as they allow your horse to feel the poles. Tendon boots are often paired with fetlock boots on the hindlegs and are usually available in matching sets.

We loved these stirrups and found them to be really shock absorbing – and our tester said she “would be more than happy to ride in these every single day”. They’re a bit heavier than other technical stirrups, but if weight isn’t one of your top deciding factors then these are a great option.

The ‘Green’ in the name refers to the environmentally sourced polyamide that covers the sprung steel frame. They are also available in a junior size (for riders under 40kg).

Topping the list in our guide to the best safety stirrups, the Safe-Ons are based on the design for Flex-On’s Green Composite Stirrup. They have shock-absorbing and ergonomic features and can be customised in the same way. The outer branch is designed to open in the event of a fall when at least 40kg weight is exerted on it – and can quickly and easily be re-attached using a tool supplied. They are also available in a junior size (for riders under 40kg).

Just like the Green Composite stirrups, the elastomers provide shock absorption to protect joints, while the off-set leather slot ensures the stirrup sits at the optimum angle. The inclined tread also helps you to maintain the correct leg position. The junior stirrups are available with flat or inclined treads, and an optional stirrup cage for the junior stirrup and endurance riders is also available.

We found these stirrups to be well suited to jumping. They also felt very springy, which suggests they offer good shock absorption.

The Freejump Soft’Up Pro Plus stirrups are designed with both safety and comfort in mind. The inner branch is fixed, while the outer open branch can bend open to easily release your foot in the event of a fall. They also offer a high degree of shock absorption – the stirrups flex at the lower inside bend of the stirrups, which absorbs shock travelling into riders ankles, knees and hips in addition to the shock travelling across the horses back.

The main difference from the Soft’Up Classics is the position of the stirrup eye, which is on a 45° angle to provide extra comfort and allow riders to easily find a lost stirrup. The Pro+ tread is also 27% larger – this extra size combined with the raised metal studs across each footplate provides extra grip and stability.

LeMieux Vector Balance Stirrup

These stirrups have a slight incline of 5° and a studded grip surface. It also benefits from an integrated hinged arm that releases when abnormal pressure is applied during a fall, and allows the foot to come out of the stirrup.

They are shock-absorbing, which reduces fatigue at the knee and ankle, particularly as your horse lands. The eyelet for the stirrup leather is recessed and off-set at 45°, which makes it easier to regain a lost stirrup.

These stirrups certainly aren’t the most technical on this list, but when you compare them to traditional irons they definitely offer a range of benefits, which makes them a great option if you’re shopping on a budget.

They’re available in a wide range of colours and this elastomer soleplate is what offers the shock absorption. They have a wide tread and a slight tilt, which helps reduce the tension in your joints.

Acavallo Opera Stirrups

The way these Acavallo stirrups are suspended allows these lightweight stirrups to hang with optimal balance, angle and flexibility. The laser-cut stainless steel foot plate is supported by twin moulded side sections. Each side of the stirrup works independently, which spreads the load and helps to absorb shock.

The Opera stirrup is a completely new concept in riding because of its special patented loop construction, which allows the stirrup to adhere to the saddle flap, avoiding friction between the leg and the stirrup, for a more correct, comfortable and secure ride. The large stirrup pad in stainless steel gives riders better grip and relieves tension in the hips, knees, ankles and calves.

What are the benefits of technical stirrups?

When you compare the best technical stirrups that are currently available with the simple, traditional steel irons, it’s easy to see how far we’ve come. Technical stirrups are more shock-absorbing, which is great news for our joints as they’re some of the best stirrups for knee pain or ankle pain. They also have better grip, which helps us retain our stirrups, and are ergonomically designed. The angles used in technical stirrups not only help you regain a lost stirrup more easily, but some designs help you keep your heels down, too.

The safety aspect is also important – many technical stirrups are now also shaped to allow your foot to slide out more easily in the event of a fall, while others have a breakaway arm.

Technical stirrups for dressage vs jumping

While stirrups can be used in any discipline (assuming they comply with the rules if you’re competing), some designs are made with particular disciplines in mind. By investing in a quality training stirrup that guides you into the right position, you can begin to develop improved feel, coordination and technique.

With the different leg positions and demands on the body in each discipline, some stirrup designs will be more beneficial to you than others. What size stirrups do I need?

Not all stirrups come in a range of sizes, but where they do you should choose a pair that are one inch wider than the width of your boot at the ball of your foot. This gives you half an inch of space each side once your foot is in place. Some stirrup sizes are determined by weight – particularly when it comes to safety stirrups. While you might have feet small enough to fit junior stirrups, for example, you need to check the rider weight limits for activating the safety mechanism.

The best half pads for horses can be used for a variety of reasons. Some are added beneath correctly fitting saddles to add an extra layer of shock absorption and aid stability, while others can be added to account for changes in the horse’s shape and help to temporarily improve saddle fit. This is particularly useful when horses are developing or changing shape due to weight, fitness or age, and many of these have shims, which you can add and remove as necessary.

Some half pads are designed to be used alone, but most can also be used with alongside one of the best saddle pads – some should be used underneath and against your horse’s back, while others should be used between the saddlecloth and saddle. CONFUSION has arisen about the FEI’s tack approval processes, as the organisation states there is “no certification system” in place – but that new items can be submitted via an app for “review” by an expert equipment group.

Ongoing discussions have been taking place around tack approval after it was announced that the Quantum cavesson bridle, now known as the welfare bridle, is no longer permitted in dressage under FEI rules from this year (news, 5 January).

Quantum co-founder Gill Batt told H&H that when the bridle was launched in November 2018, the company approached the FEI for approval and submitted an FEI dressage equipment form. In response, they were told by the FEI that the bridle was “very similar to a bridle that has already been approved and so you do not need to submit an application, it would already be allowed for use in FEI dressage competitions”.

Ms Batt said in November 2022 that when they found out the bridle would be banned, they spoke to the FEI and were asked to have the bridle pressure-tested – but were not given any protocols on how this should be conducted. Quantum had the bridle independently tested by the University of Copenhagen, during which it was compared against four FEI-approved bridles, and the results concluded the welfare bridle “exerts significantly less pressure on the nose” than the other bridles, under different pressure-testing measures.

“We were thrilled with the results, the bridle was what we said it was. But when we submitted the results to the FEI, we immediately got the rebuff, saying they were not interested,” she said.

Ms Batt said despite more communication, the FEI will not permit the bridle.

“Absolutely you should be challenged about your product, you should have to put your money where your mouth is – which we have done. But they are still blocking it and we don’t understand why,” she said.

Last month, when H&H approached the FEI for comment, at first a spokesman said the organisation “can only repeat their statement” given to H&H in January about concerns over the bridle’s noseband pressure – and reiterated that horse welfare is “paramount” and that the FEI “continuously reviews new tack and equipment to ensure the healthy and safety of equine athletes”.

The spokesman added that the FEI “does not have certification processes for individual pieces of tack and equipment”.

“In other words, there is no mechanism where the manufacturer or other parties are able to submit a piece of tack and/or equipment for review by a panel, and get a ‘stamp of approval’ by the FEI,” he said. “Therefore, the officials are expected to apply the rules as written.”

Since this statement, the FEI announced the launch of a new tack and equipment app at the FEI Sports Forum (news, 4 May). The app provides riders and officials clarity on what is and is not permitted in each discipline, with updates planned including a function to allow FEI officials to submit photos and videos of new equipment to be reviewed by the FEI equipment expert group.

Following this announcement, H&H approached the FEI again to clarify the organisation’s position around tack approval and the spokesman told H&H that Quantum submitted a picture of the bridle to the FEI dressage department in 2018 – and at the time, the bridle was “approved”.

“At the time, the dressage department had an informal approval process in place for equipment, whereby manufacturers were advised if their equipment was compatible with the rules or not,” he said.

“According to the picture sent by the company, the bridle appeared to have a standard cavesson noseband and was therefore approved. However, it was later discovered that the cheekpiece passed through the noseband, altering its function and rendering it non-compliant with FEI rules.”

The spokesman added that in 2019, the expert equipment group was formed by the FEI board to devise a “scientific-based and unified approach” to tack and equipment across all disciplines where possible, while “taking into account their uniqueness”. He said this group consists of people with sport, vet and legal backgrounds and the group works closely with external experts and equine researchers including Hilary Clayton and Rachel Murray.

“The expert group has been mandated to review the existing rules and processes, to propose amended rules in the future with the aim of achieving consistency of on-site decisions, at FEI Events, across all disciplines.”

The spokesman then reiterated that “there is currently no tack and equipment certification system in place where manufacturers, riders or other parties can submit a piece of tack for a stamp of approval”.

“However, due to the ever-evolving market of tack and equipment and with the high number of new products being launched every day, there will be instances where the applicable sport and/or veterinary rules will not provide a definite answer on the compliance of individual tack and/or equipment,” he said.

“In such cases, and in particular where there are potential horse welfare concerns, the group will make a decision whether the relevant tack or equipment is permitted to be used at FEI events in order to provide clarity to stakeholders.”

Another manufacturer, Salute Equestrian, has raised concerns about FEI tack approval processes after 16-year-old Lucy Standish was asked by a steward to remove her Salute Click & Connect neck strap before entering the cross-country start box in the CCI2*-S at Thoresby Park last month. The neck strap was designed with three connection options – to the saddle, girth or breastplate.

Lucy, who had the neck strap connected to her girth, said: “The cross-country steward said I wasn’t allowed to use my neck strap as it didn’t connect to the saddle.

Salute Equestrian founder Anna Bruce told H&H that after investigation, it was understood that the stewards received an email from the FEI last autumn stating, “This particular neck strap has been reviewed by the eventing committee and their feedback is that it is not allowed for eventing.” Under FEI rules, if neck straps are used for cross-country, they must be attached either to the breastplate or to the saddle.

“I believed, when connected to the girth, it met the rules – after all, it’s approved when connected to a breastplate that in turn is connected to the girth,” said Ms Bruce.

She added that she “hoped for a discussion” with the FEI to enable the rules to allow for neck straps to be attached to the girth, or for the neck strap to be “considered a hybrid breastplate in this format”. But she said the FEI told her there was no mechanism where the manufacturer or other parties are able to submit a piece of tack for review

“While we can work with the ruling as it stands [because the Click & Connect neck strap can also connect to the breastplate or saddle], I’m hoping the FEI or stewards will ask to view the neck strap in practice and not just from a photograph, and give it a fair assessment in this format for the benefit of horses, riders and the perception of our sport,” she said.

An FEI spokesman told H&H the decision at Thoresby Park was a “field of play decision and appeared to have been taken correctly by the relevant official”.

Base layers are an incredibly popular for horse riding. They are smart, can be worn on their own, as part of a layering system or even as your cross-country colours. Base layers lend themselves very well to the matchy-matchy trend, too, and can be teamed with matching riding leggings, saddle pads and more. Many brands offer a very wide range of colours, so while black and navy are a staple, there is plenty more choice if you want it – lights and brights make for great pictures.

The best base layers for horse riding are made of technical materials that keep you cool, dry and comfortable by efficiently wicking away sweat and drying. Some also have a UPF rating, which demonstrates how much UV they block out. Base layers should also offer a great freedom of movement and, due to their slim fit, should be designed to flatter. There are many types of girth and the best stud girths will protect your horse’s girth area additional protection when he’s got studs in for additional grip while jumping. For this reason it is important that the middle section or kicking plate is of a suitable size, while added padding increases pressure distribution and comfort.

The best show rugs for horses are versatile. QHP Q-Cross Technical Eventing Boots

I was really impressed with the vibrant and diverse colours the QHP cross-country boots were available in – perfect for matching to cross-country colours.

On first impressions I thought these boots looked quite basic – so I was surprised by the higher price point especially in comparison to some other boots on the market. They felt more like a brushing boot than a more substantial and technical cross-country boot – I would have expected slightly sturdier fastenings and more breathable material.

However, the boots fitted well, provided ample protection to the tendons and remained firmly in place while out on course. While they didn’t hold any water, they gathered a fair bit of dirt from a sandy course but this brushed off well.

They survived wear and wash really well, staying bright and vibrant. They stored neatly in pairs, too.

I used a medium front and back on a 16.3hh Irish Sport Horse. I think they measured up well and I wouldn’t have wanted them any longer or shorter.

Verdict

These boots performed really well and did their job effectively. They protected my horse’s legs while looking smart and remaining firmly in place. I would recommend these to someone who was looking for a pair of cross-country boots available in a range of colours.

Equilibrium Tri-Zone Impact Sports Boots

On first impressions, I wasn’t overly keen on the honeycomb aesthetic of these boots and the owner of the horse I was using to test the boots mentioned she had previously had trouble fitting a pair of Equilibrium boots on the gelding. However, as soon as we put them on, we was pleasantly surprised with the fit, quality and how lightweight they were. They are similar to the Tri-Zone All Sports boots, but offer much more protection.

When out eventing, the straps were strong and durable, so I didn’t feel the need to tape them, which I often would do to ensure they don’t come undone. After completing the course, the boots hadn’t moved, slipped, rotated or rubbed my horses legs at all and they still felt nice and snug. They also didn’t hold any water, which I was really pleased about because I wouldn’t want a boot that holds extra weight. The vinyl strike pad felt like it would provide ample protection to the tendons, whilst being supple enough not to restrict her movement. This isn’t solid in the same way that other boots are, but it definitely felt protective.

The boots washed very well at 30° and dried looking as new. They store neatly in pairs. There is a small colour selection for these boots (black, white, red or blue), which worked for me as my colours are blue and black. The boots were £150 for a full set, which are the most expensive of all the boots I’ve tested, but I would say they are worth the money and lived up to their price point.

I used a medium front and back on a 16.3hh Irish Sport Horse – they were the perfect length to protect his tendons and the Velcro did up neatly around the leg.

Verdict

Overall I really liked the Tri-Zone Impact Sports boots. I couldn’t really find any faults with them and would highly recommend to anyone wanting a higher budget smart, protective boot for cross-country or other activities where the legs needs protecting.

LeMieux Carbon Air XC Boots

On first look at the LeMieux Carbon Air XC boots, I found them to already be soft and supple, which meant I was less worried about the likelihood of them rubbing my sensitive horse’s legs.

They are very lightweight and I found them easy to put on, and the middle strap is elasticated to help with this. The strike pad sits neatly against the leg and the boot offers full tendon protection. I liked their simple design – the discreet black, grey and red detailing is smart and clean looking. I also liked the design of the vent panel. The Velcro straps are single layer, which made me think they might not be as strong as others that had leather uppers, such as the Mark Todd cross-country boots. However, they were really easy to do up/undo as they weren’t too sticky, which is great for taking them off quickly at the end of a round. I didn’t feel the need to tape the boots either, which I would normally do.

After completing a cross-country round, the boots had remained in place – not slipping or twisting at all – and were still protecting all the key areas. They hadn’t retained much water and weren’t too dirty, either. I was worried that sand or dirt would stick to the vented areas or go into the gaps, but this didn’t seem to happen too much, which was good.

They washed very well at 30° and have come out looking really smart. They also store extremely neatly in pairs. The boots are only available in black, however this wouldn’t bother me as they look really smart. The total price for a set was around £105, which is mid-market and for the quality, protection and feel of the boots I think is a very reasonable price point.

Verdict

I felt these boots were great value for money. I would love it if they were slightly more breathable all round rather than only where the vented detail is, but I expect this would compromise their level of protection. I would recommend these boots for people wanting a smart set of XC boots, with a good level of protection and a sensible budget.

First impressions

A modern looking shirt that looked most suited to eventing and showjumping.

Overview of performance

This is a very smart looking shirt, which is breathable and quick drying. It was a pleasure to wear all day in the heat. A tie fitted nicely in the collar and buttons down the front looked really stylish.

Likes and dislikes

I liked how comfortable, well fitted and stylish this shirt is. I also like how it can be worn without a jacket and still looks very smart. I am finding it very hard to fault as a summer competition shirt.

Verdict

A good priced, smart shirt that is ideal for competitions throughout the summer

British rider Michael Jackson attracted some puzzled glances as he rode round the CCI3* track at the Equi-Trek Bramham Horse Trials on Saturday.

His mount, PSH Promise Me, appeared to have two sets of reins, with one on the bit and the other attached to the cheekpiece of his bridle.

It turns out that Michael does have a slightly unusual tack arrangement — but on this occasion it actually went wrong so ended up being even odder than normal.

“He has a normal pelham in his mouth, which he wears with a flash noseband, plus he also has a kineton noseband,” explains Michael. “The kineton noseband has a metal ring on it and we attach one rein to the metal ring. When the pressure gets too much in his mouth, I can ride him off the metal ring.

“I’ve been riding him in this all season and he’s gone like a lamb in it. But at Bramham he came out of the start box, chucked his head up in the air and the rein slipped from the metal ring up onto the cheekpiece.

“It’s never done that before and it left the rein completely useless. I tried to slide it back down, but then decided I was better to concentrate on jumping the fences. I looked a bit of a wally going round with the rein on the cheekpiece, but he was awesome, I’m really pleased with him.”

Michael adds that PSH Promise Me, a 10-year-old stallion belonging to Gary Power, is not particularly strong.

“He is really forward and just wants to get on with it — you can get away with that at two-star, but at three-star you need the organisation, the lengthening and shortening. We wanted to keep him happy without overbitting him — the amount of tack he’s got on his head looks worse than it is.

“The headshaking he does in front of a fence became a habit, so we’ve been trying to break that habit. I ride him in a hackamore [a bitless bridle which puts pressure on the nose] sometimes for schooling at home, so we put our thinking caps on and came up with this. It’s been working really well to take the pressure off his mouth and ride him off the rein on his nose.”

This bit connector is an interesting alternative to traditional pelham roundings, commonly used to prevent a rider having to cope with two reins. The difference here is that it allows the rider to adjust the amount of pressure to the upper and lower part of the pelham, influencing the amount of curb action felt by the horse, while allowing the rider to use a single rein.

How can they help?

Walsh Harness & Saddlery is among those manufacturing these bit connectors. The company describes this piece of tack as “ideal for getting the response necessary from a two-rein bit without the hassle of holding two reins”.

They are similar in design to show couplings, but each leather connector has a few holes and a buckle so that you can adjust the amount of action you want on the curb. For example, some people might tighten the bottom buckle and loosen the top for more leverage on a pelham, or you can leave them on both the same holes for equal pressure between the snaffle and curb.

Ema Odlin-Baxter, senior bitting advisor at The Horse Bit Shop, which supplies these connectors in the UK, explains why they are growing in popularity.

“Traditional leather roundings don’t provide a fixed position for the rein, which means they aren’t very accurate when it comes to how much curb action you would like on a pelham,” she says. “Bit connectors are more precise thanks to the double buckle system which means you can play with the strength of the curb action you require, gaining more accurate results with pressure down the rein.”

Scott Brash uses these roundings, as does event rider Pixie Thomas. She said: “They offer finer tuning than standard roundings as you can adjust how much you’re using the snaffle vs. curb action. I didn’t have an issue with rein position and they are an ideal alternative to going cross-country with two reins.”

Some riders prefer another style of rounding, made of leather and nylon, which is much shorter. These are lightweight, easy to attach and designed to offer a closer, clearer contact.

At first glance, it’s easy to spot that Southerly Roberts’ mare Fizz IV isn’t wearing a noseband. Unusual, yes, but not unprecedented.

But look again. Notice anything else missing? Yes, that’s right — she’s not wearing a browband either.

When we realised the 12-year-old mare, who won the novice class at the British Eventing Baileys Jumping and Style finals last Saturday (17 February), competes wearing essentially only half a bridle, we had to know more…

“Fizz was bred by Keith Doyle and his son Peter and they sent her away to be broken as a youngster,” says Southerly. “Two weeks later, she was dropped back at the Doyles, who were told they would never get a bridle on her again.

“You couldn’t touch her ears and she was an emotional wreck. She spent two years turned out in the field — she was basically feral and wore a lunge line, so you could catch one end and work your way towards her.”

At the time Southerly was helping Peter’s wife Sally with her racehorses and eventually she started backing Fizz again.

“Anything new she was fine with, but anything which she’d experienced when she was sent away she had a strong memory of and the bridle was one of those things,” says Southerly, who ended up buying the Carnaval Pleasure mare, who she has now had five years.

“She’s still petrified of anything going near her ears and head — everything has go to round her neck and be slid up the neck. You have to use a noseband for dressage and I can get a noseband on her, but she never wears a browband. She’s 17.2hh so by the time she puts her head in the air she’s huge and as she doesn’t need a strong noseband, most of the time she goes without one. It’s easier and saves cleaning tack!”

Fizz wears an eggbutt snaffle with a sweet iron mouthpiece and Southerly says she has to ensure the bit is slightly high in her mouth so that the headpiece doesn’t flap about, but otherwise the bridle is completely normal to ride in. The pair have won up to novice level in affiliated eventing, as well as competing in working hunters and unaffiliated dressage.
