Andrew Nicholson galloped to victory in the Amlin Plus Eventers’ Challenge at the Royal International Horse Show at Hickstead today (30 July).

Piloting Cillnabradden Evo (pictured below), owned by Sally-Anne Eggington, around the 19-fence cross-country course, Andrew rode every tight line available to him. Bar rattling the first part of the second road jump, the horse, a nine-year-old geding, never looked like making a mistake and came home clear in a time of 124.94.

Andrew said of his round: “The fences come up very quickly in the International Arena and it was a very intense course. You’ve got no time to think about what you might have for lunch!”

Interestingly, Cillnabradden Evo who events at advanced and CCI3* level, hasn’t had a fence down so far this season. Andrew last won here in 2002 riding Mallards Treat, and the reinvention of the Eventers’ Grand Prix provided a real spectacle for spectators.

Irish rider Elizabeth Power was last to go riding the Good Times Syndicate’s Doonaveeragh O One. The 14-year-old gelding won the Speed Derby at Hickstead with Elizabeth’s brother Robbie Power in 2013 and has also been placed twice in the Eventers’ Grand Prix, so was no stranger to the course or the speed that was required to win this class.

Doonaveeragh O One oozed class throughout his round, galloping and jumping every question out of his stride. Sadly they rattled the first part of the second road jump, and it fell. Elizabeth still kept her foot to the floor though, and finished in a time of 121.02, but sadly the four seconds added for the fence down meant she finished on a total of 125.02, just 0.08 seconds behind the winner.

“Andrew [Nicholson] obviously loosened the pole when he rattled it!” joked Elizabeth whose brother won a race at Galway today: “My family rang me before I went into the arena and said; ‘No pressure, but your bother has just won, so you know what you need to do!'”

Tom McEwen set a great pace when he was first into the arena riding his own eight-year-old Cuarento. The pair jumped a polished clear round to finish in a time of 126.16. Tom said of his round: “There’s nowhere to hide in that arena, but it was great fun.”

The course caused a number of problems with only four combinations from the original 20 starters jumping clear.

Many people’s favourtie to take the class, Tim Price and his four-star winner Wesko looked like they were on for the win until the last fence fell. They eventually finished in fourth place.

Problems were littered around the course and many riders took the long route at the famous Derby Bank.

Unfortunately Tanya Kyle (Emerald Butterfly), Rose Carnegie (Master Rory) and Joseph Murphy (Electric Cruise) all took a dunking at the spooky water, but they walked away safe and sound.

Tina Cook took an unscheduled dismount at fence four, the open ditch, when her horse, Zhi Zancoringo took an exception to the ditch and jumped the hedged wing, unshipping Tina who was none the worse for wear.

Twenty riders lined up for the Amlin Plus eventers’ challenge at the Longines Royal International Horse Show at Hickstead earlier today (30 July).

The class, reinvented from the original eventing grand prix by Hickstead directors Lizzie and Edward Bunn, saw event riders tackle a 19-fence course of both solid and knock down cross-country style fences, including some of the Hickstead arena’s best famous natural obstacles including the devil’s dyke, derby bank and Irish bank.

Andrew Nicholson and Cillnabradden Evo proved unbeatable over the technical track against the clock to take the title.

8ab. Derby Bank: Riders go up a fairly gentle slope to the top of the bank. They then have to ride down a very steep side of the bank. There is a black flag alternative if riders fancy a slightly less steep decline! This will waste some precious seconds though

9. Oxer: located just a few strides away from the base of the bank.

11abc. Horse & Hound Irish Bank: This fence features a skinny brush followed by two strides to the bank then approximately another two strides on the landing side of the bank to another narrow triple brush

The popular Eventing Grand Prix will not take place at Hickstead this summer.

The class — in which eventers and showjumpers go head-to-head over a range of coloured poles and fixed cross-country fences — is usually held on the Thursday of the Royal International Horse Show.

But due to a change in television scheduling, Hickstead organisers have withdrawn the Eventing Grand Prix from the programme.

“This year, Sky Sports will be filming the action from the Longines Royal International Horse Show from Friday onwards,” said Hickstead director Lizzie Bunn.

“In the Amlin Plus Eventing Grand Prix, the horses and riders spend several minutes jumping the cross-country fences in the gardens of Hickstead Place, and without TV cameras to capture the action, the visitors watching live in the grandstands would be unable to follow what was happening.

“Viewers will still be able to watch live action from a number of classes, including the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup, the Templant Events Queen Elizabeth II Cup and the Longines King George V Gold Cup.”

The eventing grand prix was set up in 1998 by Hickstead founder Douglas Bunn, international showjumper Paul Schockemöhle and event rider Robert Lemieux.

During the class riders had to tackle obstacles such as the side of the Derby bank, the Irish bank and the Devil’s Dyke. Any fences knocked down added 5 seconds to the rider’s time, with the fastest time winning.

Pippa Funnell and The Tourmaline Rose won the 1^st running of the class, and the pair won it twice more in 2000 and 2001.

Michael Whitaker became the first showjumper to win the Eventing Grand Prix with Sir Dino in 2003.

Eventer Gary Parsonage was the most successful rider in the class, winning in 1999 on Just So I and winning a further 3 times on great Peter Street (pictured).

British showjumper Zoe Adams won the Amlin Plus Eventing Grand Prix 2013 at the Longines Royal International Horse Show at Hickstead.

Satonamillion just had a single rail negotiating the road crossing/table fence towards the end of the course to finish on 190.66sec. Joseph Murphy riding Sportsfield Othello was slightly quicker around the course, but had to settle for 2nd place with 2 fences down. Elizabeth Power and the Hickstead Speed Derby winner Doonaveeragh O One were 3rd.

At 20 years old, he’s no spring chicken, but Lenamore is not one to laze around in “retirement”.

The gutsy grey retired from eventing earlier this year, but this afternoon (1 August) from 3pm fans will see him flying round Hickstead — tackling massive obstacles, including the Devil’s Dyke — 
in the Amlin Plus Eventing Grand Prix at the Longines Royal International Horse Show. 

“He’s in great form,” his rider Caroline Powell told H&H. “I’ve been taking him out showjumping to give him a bit of fun and keep his mind busy. He’s fit, well and still loving life.”

The 2010 Burghley winner and Kiwi team stalwart has taken part once before, in 2010, when he finished 4th.

“He thoroughly enjoyed it and we’ll be giving it a good bash again this time,” added Caroline.

Competitors tackle a course of showjumps before embarking on a series of mainly knock-down cross-country style fences.

Another combination to watch is Grand National-winning jockey Robbie Power, who is hoping to escape the Galway racing festival to ride Speed Derby winner Doonaveeragh O One (pictured below).

Trevor Breen will partner Laura Collett’s Badminton ride, Noble Bestman, while she recovers from her fall.

A Grand National-winning jockey, Olympic eventers and a Speed Derby champion will be lining up in this afternoon’s (Thursday 19 July) Eventing Grand Prix at Hickstead.

Robbie Power, who won the 2007 Grand National on Silver Birch, is taking part in the event for the first time.

Before switching to racing he used to be a professional showjumper and was a former young rider European gold medallist.

Robbie will be borrowing Doonaveeragh O One from his sister, event rider Elizabeth, for the class.

“The horse I’ll be competing on is an ex-eventer of hers – last year she competed him in this class and I thought this year I’d have a go,” said Robbie. “I hope I’ll do well – he’s had plenty of experience. I’ve always wanted to have a go at it, it looks a lot of fun.

“I’ve been competing in Ireland on days when we haven’t had any racing, to get my eye in, and I’d like to think that I’ll do racing proud.”

And he’ll be up against New Zealand Olympic eventer Andrew Nicholson, Ireland’s Mark Kyle and Rolex Grand Slam winner Pippa Funnell. Trevor Breen and Speed Derby winner Adventure De Kannan will also be competing.

In the eventing grand prix riders must tackle a course of showjumps before embarking on a series of cross-country fences in the grounds of Hickstead. They then turn back into the arena to contend with some of Hickstead’s most famous fences including the Derby bank (from side to side).

The Amlin Plus Evening Grand Prix will start at 3pm with TV coverage starting an hour earlier on Sky Sports 2.

Gary Parsonage and Peter Street won their third Amlin Plus Eventing Grand Prix at Hickstead’s Longines Royal International Horse Show today with a brilliant clear round.

Gary was last of the 23 starters to go, and jumped a perfect round to stop the clock at 198.47sec.

He retired 17-year-old Peter Street immediately after the class. The pair won in 2008 and 2009, and finished second to Shane Breen last year.

“This was his best round — he felt very comfortable,” said Gary.

Gary also won in back in 1999 on Just So I and becomes the first rider to claim four victories.

Mark Kyle and Step In Time were several seconds faster but picked up 20pen for knock-downs, relegating them to second in a time of 210.74.

Andrew Nicholson, another former winner along with Mark, finished third on his four-star eventer Avebury. The pair jumped a beautiful clear but were a fraction of a second slower than Mark.

Oliver Townend and new ride Pepper Anne were fourth with just the final fence down. George Spence (Bow House Mandalin) and Pippa Funnell (Mirage D’Elle) completed the top six, giving the eventers a clean sweep.

Shane Breen scored a blow for the showjumpers in their traditional contest against the eventers today when he won Hickstead’s Amlin Plus eventing grand prix.

The Irishman, who is based at Hickstead, rode a faultless clear round on Dorada II — last year’s runner-up — in the only performance to break the 200sec barrier. It was his second win in the class after also taking it in 2006 on Mullaghdrin Gold Rain.

Shane revealed that he had deliberately gone steadily through the water — where Dorada had a rail down at the arrowhead (fence 10 and 15) on the return trip last year — and over the new double of angled gates (fence 17, pictured), but knew he could be quicker than his main challenger Gary Parsonage over the showjumps.

“I’ve had him since he was three and he does everything,” said Shane. “The only thing he doesn’t like is puissances.”

Favourite and last-to-go Gary Parsonage was challenging for a record fourth victory on his winner of the past two years, Peter Street, and he looked on track to challenge Shane until he had a rail down going into the Devils Dyke. He ended up 10sec behind for second.

Another Irishman, Mark Kyle, was third on his ride for the forthcoming World Equestrian Games, Step In Time. It was the horse’s first time competing in the class, although Mark has previously won it on Drunken Disorderly, who was retired from competition aged 20 in a special main arena ceremony this afternoon.

Caroline Powell was fourth on another eventing grand prix virgin, Lenamore, who went as neatly as ever, with Nicole Pavitt (Blake) fifth for the showjumpers and Nicola Wilson (Portersize Top Dollar) sixth.

Tomorrow’s Amlin Plus eventing grand prix at Hickstead’s Royal International Horse Show should be a classic running of the contest.

It’s the 13th time the eventing grand prix has taken place, and there’s no doubt about who is the one to beat this time round.

Gary Parsonage goes into the class bidding for his third victory in a row on Peter Street, and his fourth in total after also winning back in 1999 on Just So.

If he succeeds, Gary will become the only person to have won four eventing grand prix titles, having equalled Pippa Funnell’s record of three (1998, 2000 and 2001 with The Tourmaline Rose) last year.

“I’m trying not to think about the record — a lot can go wrong in that 70 or 80 seconds. But the horse loves it at Hickstead and I’m looking forward to riding him there again,” says Gary.

Pippa Funnell is in the class this year as well, so she too could set a new record, but as she rides the promising eight-year-old Billy Landretti, she may wish to preserve his confidence for the future rather than throwing all caution to the winds — normally necessary for victory here.

On the eventing side, Caroline Powell could be another one to watch. Her mount, Lexi Mackinnon’s experienced four-star campaigner Lenamore, makes his first assault on this class, but he’s a great jumper and generally records fast times cross-country so he could be tailor-made for the eventing grand prix.

Former winner Shane Breen heads up the showjumpers’ challenge on Dorada, who he rode into second place last year — just ahead of his brother Trevor, who is not entered this year.

Nicole Pavitt is another to keep an eye on as she rides Blake with whom she was fourth in 2009.

Only two showjumpers have ever won — Michael Whitaker in 2003 and Shane Breen in 2006 — so they have some way to go to beat the eventers’ tally. Could they get one step closer tomorrow, or will the eventers triumph again?

Blenheim Horse Trials is running a new Tri Zone BE100 eventer challenge on the Sunday of the main event (9-12 September) this year.

The eventing grand prix-style competition is aimed at amateur riders who compete at BE100 (formerly pre-novice) level.

To enter, competitors need three double clears (jumping and time showjumping, jumping cross-country) at BE100 at selected British Eventing horse trials — all within 65 miles of Blenheim — between 31 July 2009 and 1 August 2010. Riders cannot have competed at CIC** or higher in the past 12 months.

The Tri Zone BE100 eventer challenge will take place in the 70x90m Bladon Arena, which is sited by the bridge into the tradestand area.

Competitors will tackle 8 to 10 showjumps, then 6 to 8 cross-country fences. At the end of course, riders can either take on a 1.10m “joker” showjump, or a smaller fence, which will be on a longer line making the optimum time more difficult to achieve. Penalties will be awarded for jumping faults and exceeding the optimum time.

Blenheim director Mandy Herview said: “We created this class based on the popularity of our Dodson and Horrell Pony Club and Riding Club team eventer challenges and felt if we could do an individual eventer challenge it would allow other competitive amateur riders the opportunity to ride at Blenheim.

“We specifically chose the qualification of three double clear jumping results and not overall placings at the BE100 qualifying venues to enable those who may struggle with the dressage to have a chance to ride in a final at this fantastic venue.”

Entries open on 1 May and close on 4 August and there will be a ballot if it is oversubscribed. Entry costs £35. Gary Parsonage scored a last-minute victory for the eventers in the Quantum Saddle eventing grand prix at Hickstead this afternoon.

Gary was last to go on his winner from last year, Peter Street (pictured), and as he entered the arena show jumpers — normally the underdogs in this class — held a one-two-three, with Irish brothers Shane and Trevor Breen leading Nicole Pavitt.

But Gary stormed round on the chestnut eventer-turned-show jumper and finished on a time of 200.71, including 10sec to add for two fences down. This put him just ahead of Shane on Dorada (203.25) and Trevor on Adventure De Kannan (205.66).

“I didn’t have a plan — just to go as fast as I could,” said Gary. “I know these two [the Breens] can go quick and hats off to Nicole Pavitt for setting everybody up by going fast in the middle of the class.”

Eventual runner-up Shane, the 2006 winner on Mullaghdrin Gold Rain, said: “My plan was to go as quick as I could and try to jump clear, but unfortunately I had a fence down. I knew watching Gary I was in trouble — his was a fantastic round.”

Third-placed Trevor’s ride, Adventure De Kannan, evented with his owner Karen Swan before turning to show jumping, which was why Trevor first decided to try him in this class last year, when he was too slow for the honours. This year the pair put in the fastest round, but 15sec to add for three fences down kept them out of the top spot.

Long-term leader Nicole Pavitt finished up fourth on Blake.

Gary Parsonage now equals Pippa Funnell’s record of three wins in this class — as well as last year’s victory, he took the eventing grand prix in 1999 on Just So II.

GARY Parsonage reclaimed the title he first won nine years ago when he piloted Peter Street to victory in the Ford Ranger Eventing Grand Prix.

Drawn sixth to go out of a field of 23, Gary had his foot flat to the board from start to finish around Hickstead’s revamped 27-fence course and the pair stopped the clock in a time of 205.20sec, having jumped an immaculate clear.

Gary, who won this class with Just So II in 1999, admitted that he had high expectations of Peter Street.

“He’s an advanced eventer and a Grade A show jumper, so this class was designed for him,” said Gary. “He won Burgie CCI** four years ago, but gave himself – and me – a few frights eventing at the higher levels, so we decided to change jobs.”

Last year’s winners, Emilie Chandler and Kellymoss, came within a whisker of a second victory, finishing on 207.47. Drawn last to go, the pair recorded one of three clear jumping rounds of the competition — the third came from 11th placed show jumper Steven Franks and Royal Crown.

Matthew Wright and Caunton Welldone occupied third spot for the second year running. Theirs was one of the most exhilarating rounds of the afternoon, but two rails down across the country prevented them from topping the leaderboard.

Shane Breen was the highest placed of the show jumpers, finishing fourth with the stallion Royal Concorde, whose nosedive into the Martin Collins Ford at fence 10 marred an otherwise brilliant round.

This unique competition always sees a few dramas and this year was no exception. New Zealand’s Hong Kong-bound Joe Meyer was eliminated when his ride, Black Andy, jumped the wrong way down the Derby Bank, taking most of the newly laid turf with him, and Lucy Wiegersma performed a spectacular somersault when her ride Loustic De Lechenau (who events under the name of French Leave), stumbled up the Ford Ranger Bank at fence 21, stopped and ejected his jockey on top.

Hickstead’s unique Ford Ranger Eventing Grand Prix gets a new look at this week’s Royal International Horse Show, with riders taking on a revised show jumping track and new cross-country obstacles.

Changes introduced by course designers Kelvin Bywater and Robert Lemieux include two time-saving short cuts in the first eight show jumps.

Out in the country there is The Bunn Leisure Brush and Carlsberg Beer Garden — a related combination of three fences comprising a V-shaped brush, a large bench seat and a stack of beer kegs — plus the The Gastro Gold Sheep Pens, a new complex of hurdle pens – alongside one filled with sheep – plus two five-barred gates and a hedge and bank.

Back in the international arena the large dry ditch, which is normally jumped in the DFS Derby, has had the addition of some substantial timber to make the BHS Trakhener. And the course includes some of Hickstead’s famous permanent fences including the Derby Bank, the Irish Bank, the Devil’s Dyke, which is jumped in reverse, and the Hickstead Lake.

Starters this year include four previous winners, Irish show jumper Shane Breen and event riders Mark Kyle, Gary Parsonage and last year’s number one, Emilie Chandler.

Eventing challengers include Australian Stuart Tinney, who won eventing gold at the Sydney Olympics eight years ago, Household Cavalry riding master Major Richard Waygood, Eddie Stibbe, who has ridden in more three-day events than any other rider, and Olympic contenders Lucy Wiegersma and Oliver Townend.

DFS Derby winner Ben Maher, Hickstead specialist Jane Annett and Shane Breen’s brother Trevor are among the show jumping specialists competing to win a Ford Ranger for a year plus a share of the £13,000 prize fund.

Jeanette Brakewell’s famous equine partner, Over To You, will be heading a world-class field in today’s Ford Ranger Eventing Grand Prix at the Longines Royal International Horse Show.

Over To You was retired from three-day eventing at Badminton this spring, but the 19-year-old will be out to show his younger rivals a clean pair of heels in Hickstead’s traditional head-to-head between event riders and show jumpers.

Jeanette Brakewell will be the penultimate rider to tackle the Hickstead course, which combines show jumps and permanent obstacles in the International Arena and knock-down cross-country fences across the River Lawn and out into the countryside beyond.

She will be followed by last year’s winner, Shane Breen riding Royal Concorde, who is only the second show jumper to have won the competition since its inception nine years ago. Other show jumpers taking part include DFS Derby winner Ben Maher (North Astor Group Sir Vine) and Steven Franks (Gold Crown).

The class will get underway with evergreen event rider Eddy Stibbe riding Dusky Moon. Other faces to look out for include previous winners Mark Kyle (Drunken Disorderly) and Gary Parsonage (Peter Street) along with Richard Waywood, who will be riding The Queen’s coloured eventer Peter Pan. Also in action will be Sarah Cohen aboard The Wexford Lady, Oliver Townend on Daisy Crazy, Matt Ryan with Slight Of Hand and Tina Cook riding First Flight.

The Hickstead team having been working hard to ensure that the show will go ahead despite the recent heavy rain. Yesterday’s classes that were due to take place in the International Area were moved to the all-weather to preserve the ground. Today a number of classes from outside rings will take place on the all-weather, but the major classes of the day will take place in the International Arena as planned.

A Hickstead spokesman told Horse & Hound Online: “The show is going great guns. We are not going to let the weather beat us.”
