Council to consider banning trail-hunting on its land

A vote on whether trail-hunting should be banned on a local authority’s land is set to be held this week.

Councillor Lee Scordis, of Essex County Council, is proposing the motion at the full council meeting tomorrow (14 May).

The Countryside Alliance (CA) is urging people in Essex to contact their ward councillors and ask them to oppose the “draconian” motion.

Trail-hunting, where hounds follow a laid scent, is legal under the Hunting Act (2004).

But Cllr Scordis, seconded by Cllr Allan Davies, is calling for a ban on “any future trail hunting and exercising of packs of foxhounds on Essex County Council land”.

Cllr Scordis told H&H he is concerned trail-hunting is being used as a cover for illegal hunting and that he has received a “significant amount of abuse” from pro-hunting supporters since proposing the motion.

“We are concerned that trail hunting is being used as a guise by a minority to hunt foxes and hares,” he said.

“We have no issue with drag hunting. This is only a ban on county council land and will hopefully send a strong message that the rules need tightening up.”

Polly Portwin, head of hunting at the CA, told H&H there is “no justification for this motion other than pure prejudice”.

“There have been no prosecutions of hunts for illegal hunting in Essex since the Hunting Act was enforced, nor is there any evidence to suggest that Essex hunts break the law,” she said.

“It is ironic that it was the Labour Party, during the passage of the Hunting Act, that argued trail-hunting was a viable alternative to traditional forms of hunting, yet this Labour councillor is proposing to ban a perfectly legal activity that is enjoyed by thousands of Essex residents.”

In a message to CA members, Tim Bonner stressed the importance of people lobbying their councillors after a recent vote to ban trail hunting on Nottinghamshire County Council land was won by one vote.

“We want to ensure that Essex county councillors fully understand the strength of feeling and support for these legal activities in order for them to vote against it, and therefore we urge you to contact your local councillor immediately asking them to oppose this motion,” he said.

He added suggested wording could include pointing out that the motion is “entirely illogical”.

“Trail-hunting and hound exercising are no different to any other legal activity like dog walking or drag hunting,” he said.

“To seek to ban lawful recreational activities on council land is draconian and unnecessary.

“No one, including the council, can give permission for an unlawful activity, without themselves committing an offence, and no council should be banning lawful activities, without very serious reasons and the motion provides no justification for the action being proposed.

‘Exhausted’ colts saved from sewage-filled bog

Firefighters worked in waist-deep sewage to rescue a pair of horses who had become submerged in ditch last week.

The fire service pulled two colts out of a sewage-filled ditch in a remote location in Essex on 8 October after a dog walker reported them stuck.

Crews from Corringham fire station and Great Baddow and South Woodham Ferrers animal rescue units took two hours to free the ponies.

They were found up to their necks in mud, having slipped down a steep bank.

RSPCA inspector Marie Hammerton,who joined the emergency services at Ford Road in Tilbury, said the colts were exhausted by the ordeal.

“They were absolutely submerged, only their heads were sticking out from the thick mud. It was very worrying,” she said.

The ponies were taken to House and Jackson veterinary hospital in Blackmoor for a much needed bath.

Vets at Essex’s only equine hospital have named the six-month old ponies Jammy and Dodger.

Both are expected to make a full recovery, but are still a little nervous.

If nobody comes forward to claim the ponies by the weekend they will be taken to an RSPCA centre for rehoming.

“We don’t know if these two young ponies were abandoned, however we have yet to have anyone to come forward to claim them,” said Inspector Hammerton.

Boyfriend of murdered groom given life sentence

The boyfriend of groom Laura Davies has been sentenced to life in prison for her murder.

Jordan Taylor, 22, of Churchill Avenue, Basildon, stabbed Laura multiple times in a “frenzied attack” on 3 July.

She died later that night in Basildon Hospital.

He was found guilty of murder yesterday (Thursday, 14 January) at Chelmsford Crown Court following an eight-day trial at the same court.

He was sentenced today (Friday, 15 January) and will serve at least 23 years behind bars.

DCI Marina Ericson, from the Kent and Essex serious crime directorate, led the investigation.

“Taylor attacked Laura in the kitchen of [her] flat and as she tried to get away from him, he had followed her through a small garden and in to a grassed area where he then stabbed her repeatedly,” she said.

“She was fighting for her life. His vengeful and violent actions took that young life away.”

She added that Taylor had displayed “controlling and jealous” behaviour and Laura (pictured, top) had tried to end their relationship.

This came to a head on the night that she was killed.

Laura, 21, worked as a groom at the Essex Horse and Pony Protection Society in Pitsea.

She lived onsite and had been in a relationship with Taylor (pictured, left) since December 2014.

The court heard that she had grown tired of Taylor’s controlling and jealous behaviour and had planned to break up with him on the evening of 3 July.

Police were called to the sanctuary at around 8.15pm that evening following a call from a member of the public, who said he had seen a woman being stabbed and a man standing over her covered in blood.

Officers found Taylor hiding in bushes near the flat and the nine-inch kitchen knife used to attack her was found in undergrowth nearby.

They rushed to help Laura, who had been critically injured in the attack, and Taylor was initially arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm.

He was later arrested on suspicion of murder and was subsequently charged.

“We miss her dreadfully and are struggling to come to terms with what happened,” said her mother, Dyanne Lambert, following Laura’s death.

“She was a very loving child who lived for her horses. She had been riding since she was three-years-old when she had her first pony. She had worked at the horse sanctuary for two-and-a-half-years and it was her life.”

Speaking after the trial, her family thanked the eyewitness who called the emergency services and all those who worked on the case.

“Through Laura’s death the world has lost an amazing person and our lives will never be the same without her,” they said.

“Laura was a loving, caring person, who didn’t have a bad bone in her body. She had a passion for animals and devoted her life to caring for and protecting them.

“Laura was beautiful and loved by all who knew her. She is greatly missed and will always be in our hearts and never forgotten.”

Thieves steal £15,000 of tack from riding for the disabled

More than £15,000 worth of tack has been stolen from a Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) centre in Essex.

Barrow Farm riding centre, in Highwood, had 14 bridles and 14 saddles taken during the break in on Monday (7 December).

The centre has temporarily closed as it has no equipment to offer riding lessons.

This means the 100 children and adults who have lessons there will be unable to ride until more tack is sourced.

The centre is calling for people in the area to keep their eyes open for tack for sale. All the centres tack is marked so is identifiable.

Essex police are currently investigating the break in.

“We are appalled and saddened by this burglary, which has devastated a vital and much loved charity,” an RDA spokesman told H&H.

“We have offered the group what help and support we can — including an emergency grant — and we understand they are being hugely supported by offers of help and donations in the local area.

“If any good can come of this thoughtless and cold-hearted crime, it is the out-pouring of generosity and kindness shown to Barrow Farm RDA — for which I know they are truly grateful.”

The theft happened between 10pm on Monday 7 December and 8.50am on Tuesday 8 December.

Barrow Farm is based between Chelmsford and Brentwood and has been providing riding and carriage driving lessons for disabled children and adults since 1976, run by chief instructor Anne Mitchell.

The centre started nearly 40 years ago with Exmoor ponies and now has 12 “hard-working dependable ponies with their own individual characteristics”.

TOWIE brings showbiz to Essex riding school

A riding school had a taste of showbiz after cast members from The Only Way Is Essex joined them for an afternoon of filming.

Chelmsford Equestrian Centre was host to stars of the ITV reality TV show model Chloe Lewis and footballer Jake Hall, who came for a riding lesson on a date on 6 November.

They were joined by friends Georgia Kousoulou and Tommy Mallet.

“We had good fun,” centre owner Walter Brinzer told H&H. “The whole team were very professional and very engaging.”

Around 18 people made up the film crew.

“The crew and cast were great to watch in action,” Walter added.

After arriving at the centre in Chelmsford, the pair were introduced to their riding school horses before heading to the outdoor arena for a lesson.

Chloe rode Mac, a 15.1hh dark bay gelding, and Jake rode York, a 17.2hh black thoroughbred.

“Jump on a horse for first time today and done a cantar [sic],” Jake tweeted after the lesson.

The cast enjoyed a tour of the livery yard, where they met the largest horse at the centre — 18hh Oreo.

“So much fun horse riding today,” Chloe said later.

Before they left, the reality stars posed with Oreo and the equestrian centre staff for photos.

The stars shared photos of their new equine friends across Twitter and Instagram.

“It has given us very good coverage for the yard,” Walter added.

He said that the centre posted the news and photos last night and it has already been seen by 7,000 people.

The riding scenes had been planned to be included in last night’s season 16 finale, but were cut from the final edit.

Equestrian centre plans given the go ahead by council

The go ahead to build a new equestrian centre in Essex has been granted by councillors.

Longwood Equestrian Centre was forced to move from its home in Dry Street, Basildon, earlier this year to make way for a major new housing development.

Livery services ceased at the beginning of this year and the last show was held in April.

The riding school first moved to its new site at Whites Farm in Barleylands Road, Billericay, on a temporary basis on 20 September and lessons are continuing as normal.

The application to develop the site into a permanent equestrian centre was approved by Basildon councillors at a meeting on 3 November.

Leaseholder Ian Lewington told H&H that he was feeling “very positive”.

“It is obviously very good news,” he said.

“Now we are just finalising when we can start building.”

He added that will mainly depend on the weather.

The approved development includes plans for 44 stables with an indoor and outdoor arena, parking, a café, 40 acres of grazing and a 5km hacking route.

“The support has been overwhelming,” Mr Lewington added.

“We will be running all the shows that we used to and hopefully more.”

Mr Lewington told H&H in August that he hopes to start hosting affiliated showjumping and dressage competitions as well as the “bread and butter” unaffiliated events.

He also plans to run services previously offered at their former site, including livery and educational training course.

There has been a long-running campaign to save Longwood Equestrian Centre from developers.

The outline plans for the major development at Dry Street were approved in June 2013 and proposals for the first stage of the project were accepted in September.

A total of 725 new homes are planned for Dry Street as part of the regeneration of Basildon.

Cllr Richard Moore, cabinet member for regeneration and planning, said: “We have always said our priority is to generate a stronger local economy through regeneration and building business opportunities and jobs for local people.

“This is another step towards making that vision a reality.”

He added the regeneration with bring “£40million of investment” to the area.

Could Essex have a new equestrian centre?

Plans for a new equestrian centre in Essex have been put forward to Basildon Council.

The application for the site at Whites Farm in Barleylands Road, Basildon, was submitted on 9 July and a decision is due by mid-October.

It was put forward by Ian Lewington, the business owner of soon to close Longwood Equestrian Centre.

Longwood EC in Dry Street, Basildon, has to be vacated by the end of next month to make way for a major new development.

Shows and livery services closed at Longwood EC earlier this year and currently just the British Horse Society (BHS) approved riding school remains in operation.

This, along with the riding school horses, will move to a temporary base on the new site at the end of September, allowing lessons and education courses to continue.

There has been a long-running campaign against the forced closure of the centre by its supporters.

The development that will be built over Longwood includes more than 700 homes, a primary school, shops and green spaces.

The outline plans for this major development were approved in June 2013, but campaigners have continued to call for Longwood to be saved.

Plans for the first part of the development – which include the Longwood site – were submitted in June this year.

An indoor and outdoor arena, 44 stables, parking and grazing are included in the designs for the new centre.

If it goes ahead, it will also have space for offices, a viewing area and a café.

Mr Lewington said if approval is given, they will run all the services previously offered at Longwood EC.

These include a riding school, livery, competitions and educational training courses.

He told H&H he hopes to also run affiliated dressage and showjumping, as well as “bread and butter” unaffiliated events.

“We have about six to eight weeks to wait until the decision,” said Mr Lewington.

“I am hoping it should be positive as it is something the local authority want.”

Mr Lewington added the feedback to the proposals has been “very positive” so far.

“I have had a lot of local support,” he said.

“It will be an asset to the local community and the equine world in general.”

Where can you get competitive?

Brook Farm runs affiliated and unaffiliated showing competitions, including qualifiers for the Royal International Horse Show (RIHS).

The National Pony Society’s (NPS) Area 14’s RIHS qualifiers are held at Ashfields Carriage Centre. Essex’s convenient location and good transport link make it easy to reach other venues across East Anglia and the South of England.

What can you expect to pay?

Have you seen these stolen hound puppies?

Police are investigating after 2 hound puppies were stolen from a farm in Essex.

The 2 bitches, who belong to the Essex Farmers Union, were taken from a farm at Ramsden Heath, near Chelmsford between 9pm on 18 November and 8am on 19 November.

The 14-week-old hounds had only been with their puppy walker Debbie Friswell for 9 days before they were taken.

“I think they must have seen them [the puppies] or heard the noise,” Ms Friswell told H&H.

“It was the first night that I had put the outside in the barn rather than had them in the house. They didn’t take anything else.”

One puppy is called Vintage and has a number 1 tattooed on the inside of one ear and the other is called Village and has a number 2.

Ms Friswell is concerned that thieves have mistaken the hounds for Labrador or Beagle crosses.

“People don’t realise that they are outdoor pack animals,” Ms Friswell added.

“They are not going to be able to train them in terms of continence or how boisterous they are.”

Countryside Alliance spokesman Charlotte Cooper reiterated that hound puppies are not domestic pets.

“While a 3-month-old hound puppy is a very appealing house pet, the same cannot be said of a fully grown one – ask any puppy walker!” Mrs Cooper said.

“Hounds are highly intelligent canines and bred to do a job. They are big and have very energetic natures and can become extremely destructive when forced to live the life of a pampered pet.

“Anyone who takes these on thinking they are Labradors will have a big surprise.”

OMG! TOWIE goes equestrian

Do you showjump, live in Essex and perhaps have a soft spot for Botox and love rats? Well, you could be just what the producers of the BAFTA-award winning The Only Way is Essex (TOWIE) are looking for.

Rumour has it that the current cast of fake-tanned reality superstars is set to be joined by a showjumper for the 10th series, which will be aired later this year.

2 producers visited a British Showjumping show at Codham Park Equestrian last month (25 July) in the search for another flesh-flashing recruit.

Sharon Peters, who runs the centre, told H&H: “They were mingling among the riders and doing interviews.

“They also took details of suitable people who weren’t there. They are after good-looking, interesting showjumpers from Essex.”

The cast of TOWIE are not complete strangers to the equestrian world. In March, James “Arg” Argent, Gemma Collins and Sam and Billie Faiers were spotted on screen taking riding lessons.

Carriage driving lessons on offer in the south-east

Carriage driving enthusiasts in West Sussex and Essex have the opportunity to pick up the reins and learn more about the sport by taking part in subsidised training courses.

The “Driving Back to Sport” project, funded by Sport England, has already introduced 120 new adults to driving in the counties of Nottinghamshire, Devon, Cheshire and Yorkshire.

There are 68 places now available on five-day courses taking place at Albourne Equestrian Centre (West Sussex) and Ashfields Carriage and Polo Club (Essex) throughout April, May and June.

Man airlifted to hospital after fall with Essex and Suffolk hunt

A man injured while out hunting with the Essex and Suffolk last Saturday (15 January) is making a good recovery in hospital.

Charles Williamson, 77, suffered a fractured pelvis when his horse reared up and fell over backwards.

Due to the isolated location of the accident, near Hadleigh, Mr Williamson was airlifted to Ipswich Hospital, and then transferred to the Norwich and Norfolk Hospital, where he had an operation to pin his pelvis.

Joint-master Gillie Cranfield was one of the hunt members who stayed with Mr Williamson while waiting for the air ambulance to arrive.

“Charles had been waiting for another rider to remount when his horse went up on his back legs and fell on him,” she said.

“But he seems to be recovering well — he’s sitting up in bed and complaining he is bored, which has to be a good sign.”

Riders claim kite surfers scared their horses

Riders in Essex claim a girl was thrown from her horse after a kite surfer deliberately tried to scare her horse.

Nine riders from Billericay were riding at East Beach, in Shoebury on Sunday when they claim a kite surfer aimed his machine at the group, seemingly for fun.

Peter Hayward, was riding in the group with his wife Julie, told local paper The Echo: “The kite surfers were going up and down the channel so we waited for them to pass.

“When they got about 600 yards away from us we decided to cross, but they started to come back towards us.

“They stopped and one said something to his mate, then came roaring towards us laughing and veering off just 5ft away from Nicole’s horse.

“Her horse started jumping and bucking. It threw her off and her foot caught in the stirrup, which broke along with her reins.”

15-year-old Nicole Scorah, of Laurel Avenue, Wickford, was uninjured.

Another witness told the paper: “The kite surfer went sailing into this little grey horse which reared up and the girl came off. It galloped off.

“The kite surfers were then just circling them, almost taunting them. It was so irresponsible.

A spokesman for Essex Police said they were not investigating the incident.

Brook Farm Training Centre is new BSJA venue for Essex

A new venue for British Show Jumping Association (BSJA) show jumping has been approved in Essex.

Brook Farm Training Centre in Stapleford Abbotts has been approved to host affiliated competitions and will run its first senior affiliated intro show on 20 September.

Adrienne Tinworth, speaking on behalf of Brook Farm, said: “There are relatively few affiliated centres in Essex so we have had a lot of positive feedback about hosting BSJA events, particularly among junior riders.”

The centre has been established as a venue for British Dressage competitions for two years, and began hosting unaffiliated show jumping competitions in April.

Owned by Sid and Jackie Jones, Brook Farm boasts a 50×30 wax track indoor arena with a viewing gallery that seats 280, and a 60×20 warm-up arena.

Beaten, dead pony dumped in Essex field

Essex Horsewatch has put out a further appeal for information after the body of a dead and badly beaten pony was found dumped in a field in Pea Lane, Ockendon.

Valerie Crawford, of the Horsewatch group, said a farmer found the mare in his field, under a pile of wood a week ago.

The skewbald was around 14hh and had feathered front feet.

“The field was close to the road so we believe whoever dumped her may have dragged her into the field from a vehicle,” said Ms Crawford.

The mare, estimated to be 10 years old, had a broken eye socket, which was almost definitely sustained before death.

The mare’s ears had also been ringed in red tape and she had spots of purple spray all over her body.

“We want to find out who attacked her in this way,” said Ms Crawford. “She did not deserve this ill-treatment and must have died in great pain.”
