Horse & Hound is celebrating winning awards in 5 categories of this year’s Equestrian Social Media Awards (ESMAs).

H&H won in the following categories:

Best use of Facebook: people’s choice
Best use of Twitter: judges’ and people’s choice
Best use of social media by publication: judges’ and people’s choice
Best equestrian social network: judges’ and people’s choice
Best use of social media in UK and Ireland: people’s choice award

“I’m delighted that both the judging panel and our fans agree that our social media services are top notch” said H&H webiste editor Carol Phillips.

Since it started in 2010, the ESMAs have “aimed to connect the global equestrian community and reward those who enrich the online world for equestrians”.

For this year’s ESMAs there were 2 prizes up for grabs in each category.

The first was the judges’ choice ESMA, decided by an expert panel. The second was the People’s Choice ESMA — 100% decided by public vote, so thank you for your votes.

Vote H&H in Equestrian Social Media Awards

Horse & Hound has been nominated in 5 categories in this year’s Equestrian Social Media Awards (ESMAs).

And we need your help to win!

H&H is in the mix for the following awards:

Best use of Facebook
Best use of Twitter
Best use of social media by a publication
Best social network (for the H&H forum)
Best use of social media in UK & Ireland

The ESMA team recieved more than 17,000 nominates, which were whittled down to a short-list of around 10 for each category.

The selections were based on the “strength of supporting statements made in nominations” and the “degree to which they are active and engaging in their online efforts”.

“We have enjoyed considerable success in the ESMAs during the past 3 years and we are hoping to build on that in 2014,” says H&H website editor, Carol Phillips. “If you enjoy our social media service, then please take a moment to vote for us this time.”

Horse & Hound was named best social media service in the UK and Ireland for the 2nd time last year, and retained both best use of social media by a publication and most informative social media service for the 3rd year in a row. Public nominations for the 2014 Equine Online Equestrian Social Media Awards (ESMAs) have opened and Horse & Hound is looking for your support in 5 categories.

Now in its 4th year, this year’s ESMAs have a new format. Equestrian brands, charities, personalities and organisations will be competing for 2 awards in each category. The 1st will be the Judges’ Choice, decided by a panel of experts. The 2nd will be the People’s Choice, decided by public vote.

ESMA director Liam Killen explains: “Members of the public have until 4pm (GMT) on Friday 20 December to tell us who shines in your social media world. Each nomination must include a short supporting statement, telling us why you enjoy their social media activity. The finalists in each category will be announced on Monday 20 January.”

Horse & Hound is hoping to add to our tally of ESMAs with entries in the facebook, twitter, best social media by a publication, best social network (for the H&H forum) and best use of social media in the UK and Ireland.

Horse & Hound wins four Equestrian Social Media Awards

As this year’s Equestrian Social Media Awards (ESMAs) week comes to a close, Horse & Hound is celebrating receiving four of the online accolades.

Horse & Hound was named best social media service in the UK and Ireland for the second time, and retained both best use of social media by a publication and most informative social media service for the third year in a row. The publication also won the ESMA for best use of facebook for the first time.

Carol Phillips, H&H website editor says: “We are thrilled to have equalled last year’s tally of four ESMAs. Congratulations to the Chronicle of the Horse’s forums, which beat us to the Best Social Network prize, but I’m sure our forum users will be out to claim that one back next year.”

The ESMAs were set up in 2010 to reward equestrians across the globe for enriching the online world for horse lovers everywhere. Now in their third year, the ESMAs have gone from strength to strength with 107,624 votes being cast in the finals for 2013.

Each of the 35 category had 10 finalists, which were selected based on:

The strength of supporting statements made in nominations.
The degree to which they are active and engaging in their online efforts.
Their adherence to the rules of the social media platforms they use

The finalists were then awarded a score, based 75% on the views of an expert panel and 25% on a public vote.

All of the 12 twelve regional winners went forward to the world award, which was judged by the FEI’s director of corporate communications, Richard Johnson. This year’s winner was the United States Equestrian Federation.

Liam Killen, ESMA director said: “All the finalists have done a tremendous job helping to promote equestrian sports to a wider audience, while achieving their own goals with the help of social media. We’re honoured to be able to showcase their talents.”

Day four of the Equestrian Social Media Awards brings a fourth accolade for the Horse & Hound team as we are crowned the best social media service in the UK and Ireland.

Described by the judges as “a brilliant online resource and gathering place”, it is the second year running that Horse & Hound has claimed this award.

Carol Phillips, H&H website editor says: “We are delighted to receive the award for the best use of social media in the UK and Ireland. It’s a really tough category as we are competing against all brands using social media.

It’s day three of the 2013 Equestrian Social Media Awards (ESMAs) and H&H has picked up its third award.

For the third year running, we have won the award for the “most informative use of social media”.

H&H was praised by the judges as providing “all the relevant information from all areas of the horsey world conveyed on a professional, yet friendly, basis”.

H&H website editor Carol Phillips said: “Sharing information is at the heart of what we do here at H&H and we are delighted to have received this award.”

The awards are being revealed at 2pm UK time every day this week.

Horse & Hound has picked up a second Equestrian Social Media Award (ESMA), this time for the ‘best use of facebook’.

H&H website editor Carol Phillips said: “I’m delighted to have won this award as we haven’t received ‘best use of facebook’ before. It’s great that the ESMA judges agree with our 178,000-plus fans.”

It’s that time of year again — time to get voting for your favourite horse-related Twitter, Facebook and forums.

The shortlist for the 2013 Equestrian Social Media Awards (ESMAs) has been announced and Horse & Hound is short-listed for five awards.

Best equestrian social network site/forum
Best use of social media in UK and Ireland

H&H website editor Carol Phillips says: “Horse & Hound believes social media is a great way of engaging with our fans beyond our magazine and website and this has been reflected in our ESMA successes in previous years.

Last year H&H picked up four awards

Liam Killen from the ESMA team told H&H: “We’re delighted with the response and passion shown by this year’s finalists and those who took the time to nominate their social media champions.

“The global equestrian industry has taken to social media like a duck to water. The finalists range from established associations to grassroots organisations and cottage industries to well-known brands. The ESMA finalists are all doing their bit to increase participation, educate and entertain the online equestrian community — to be able to bring them together is a real privilege.”

Finalists are awarded scores, which are based 75% on an expert panel and 25% on your votes.

Nominations for the 2013 ESMAs took place before Christmas and 10,016 nominations from over 90 countries were received. This was whittled down to 297 finalists.

Do you enjoy Horse & Hound’s Twitter and Facebook pages, forum, blogs and You Tube channel? If you like what we do in the world of social media, please take a moment to nominate us for the Equestrian Social Media Awards (ESMA).

Nominations for the 2013 awards opened yesterday (10 December) and close at midday on 21 December.

Since it started in 2010, the ESMAs have aimed to connect the global equestrian community and reward those who enrich the online world for equestrians.

“This year builds on much previous success — the 2012 awards reached over 800,000 people,” said a spokesman for ESMA.

“That the equestrian world is incredibly active on social media was especially evident during the London Olympics. A number of horse and rider name combinations trended on Twitter both in their home countries and globally during the events.”

Horse & Hound is top social media service in UK and Ireland

Horse & Hound has been named the winner of the UK and Ireland category in the Equestrian Social Media Awards (ESMAs).

Earlier this week H&H picked up the ESMAs for “best use of social media by a publication“, “best equestrian social network” for the forum and “most informative social media service“.

H&H website editor Carol Phillips said: “If someone had told me at the start of the week that we were going to win four Equestrian Social Media Awards, including being crowned best social media service across the UK and Ireland, I would have thought they were pulling my leg.

“Our thanks go to the ESMA team for organising the event, the expert judging panel for liking what we do and all of our social media fans for supporting us by liking, following, posting and sharing our content. We couldn’t have won these awards without you.”

The ESMAs were set up in 2010 to bring together the global equestrian community and show the benefits of social media for horse lovers and businesses.

The best blog went to Eventing Nation, the best use of social medial by a riding school was taken by Parelli Natural Horsemanship and best use of social media by a professional rider was won by William Fox Pitt.

Anky van Grunsven receieved the North-West Europe award and the North American award went to Stolen Horse International.

H&H has been nominated for five categories in the 2012 Equestrian Social Media Awards (ESMAs).

We have been nominated in the “Facebook”, “publication”, “most informative”, “social network” and “UK and Ireland” categories.

The awards were set up last year to recognise the worth of social media within the equestrian industry.

Last year H&H scooped the awards for “most informative”, “best YouTube” and “best use of social media by a magazine in UK and Ireland”.

“I am delighted that we have been nominated for five ESMAs this year,” said H&H web editor Carol Phillips.

“After winning three awards last year, we hope that both the public and the expert panel will recognise Horse & Hound’s excellent social media offerings and take a moment to vote for us.”

More than 8,000 nominations came in for the ESMAs in the run up to Christmas.

“It is an honour to reward equestrians for enriching the online world for horse enthusiasts globally. The standard of finalists is truly exceptional and we’re delighted to see that so many equestrians have embraced social media with such passion, creating amazing content,” said Liam Killen from the ESMA team.

The final results are based on 70% on scores from the expert panel and 30% on votes from the public.

Other categories include professional rider, amateur rider, celebrity, charity and riding school.

Each person can only cast one set of votes. Voting closes at 12noon on 10 February, 2012.

Starving horses in Egypt still need your help

The plight of working horses in Egypt continues, four months after political unrest caused tourism there to grind to a standstill.

And charities are appealing to the British public for help.

In February H&H reported that 2,000 Egyptian equines were suffering after the uprisings left owners unable to earn a living to feed their animals (news, 24 February).

Susie Nassar from the Egyptian Society for Mercy to Animals (ESMA) said: “We have been feeding the malnourished horses since 13 February, when the crisis started.”

She said there had been a gradual decrease of the “really emaciated horses” in the past couple of months. But there were “at least 300 starving horses” that still needed help.

Around 3,500 bags of food were given out by ESMA during April and May, but feed is still needed and donations are decreasing.

Medical treatment — including de-worming and first aid — has been administered thanks to ESMA.

The charity also aims to teach the community to feed horses and how to be compassionate.

“There are still around 50 horses that need de-worming and we would like to buy padded saddle cloths for those who have no respite from heavy leather saddles on their saddle sores,” said Ms Nassar.

The Brooke equine welfare charity, working with The Donkey Sanctuary and the Egyptian Society for Animal Friends, has also been involved.

The Brooke’s Karen Reed said: “We launched an emergency response programme for equines in Cairo, Edfu, Aswan and Luxor after the crisis. This ran until late April and more than 90,000kg of feed was distributed and more than 28,000 veterinary treatments were given.”

She added: “Some animals remain in a poor state of health, particularly in the area of the Pyramids, and a mobile veterinary team visits the area twice weekly. We are also running a special six-month education programme to train owners in better equine care.”

FEI to judge an Equestrian Social Media Award next year

The FEI, equestrian sport’s governing body, is to judge an award in the 2012 Equestrian Social Media Awards (ESMAs).

In next year’s awards there will be categories for best use of social media by region. Based on the FEI regional groups, the categories are designed to connect the global equestrian community through social media.

The winners of the regional categories will be passed to the FEI for them to decide the winner of the “FEI Award for the Best Use of Social Media in the Equestrian World”.

FEI President, HRH Princess Haya said: “We are delighted to be part of the ESMAs and look forward to judging the international categories from the online equestrian community.”

The FEI joined the world of social media in early 2011 and has seen a huge amount of online support.

The FEI’s director of communications, Richard Johnson added: “It’s a real testament to the thriving equestrian social media community that the ESMAs have been set up — I really hope the global equestrian community starts to think about the scheme and looks forward to being involved in the judging process”.

ESMA founder Liam Killen said: “The aim of the ESMAs is not just to shine a spotlight on those who excel in the world of social media, but to also connect the global equestrian community. This alliance will raise the profile of social media within the equestrian world.”

The ESMAs were launched this year and H&H won three categories — most informative’ social media service in the UK and Ireland, best YouTube channel (UK/Ireland) and best use of social media by a magazine (UK/Ireland).

Horse & Hound crowned ‘most informative’ service by ESMAs

On the final day of the Equestrian Social Media Awards (ESMA), Horse & Hound has been named the ‘most informative’ social media service in the UK and Ireland.

This brings Horse & Hound’s tally of ESMAs to three — a figure which no other UK equestrian brand was able to match. Horse & Hound beat Horse & County and Horse & Rider to the ‘most informative’ crown. The international title was won by TheHorse.com.

H&H’s website editor Carol Phillips says: “I’m blown away to have picked up a third Equestrian Social Media Award. It was great to win the ‘most informative’ award as the H&H team prides itself in bringing the most important and useful information to our social media fans each and every day.”

Other winners on the final day of the awards included the Riding for the Disabled Association, Parelli, Derby House, EcoGold, Horses UK and the online radio show Horses in the Morning.

Winner of the international newcomers award, Horses in the Morning dedicated a whole show to the ESMAs and spoke to some of the winners, including H&H’s website editor Carol Phillips, on Monday 14 March.

Horse & Hound has won its second Equestrian Social Media Award (ESMA) of the week — Best use of social media by a magazine in the UK and Ireland.

H&H website editor Carol Phillips said: “I’m really pleased to have won the magazine ESMA. We were up against some stiff competition, but I’m delighted that our social media followers rallied round and took the time to vote for us. Thank you to all of our fans on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.”

In a further boost for H&H, the winner of the award for Best use of social media by an amateur rider was won by H&H forum member Sarah_Jane, aka shoestringeventing.

Another H&H forum member Chloe_GHE, aka GiftHorseEventing, was second in this category.

The winner of the Best use of social media by a professional rider award was Oliver Townend, while Spillers picked up its second award of the week for Best use of social media by a feed company.

Spillers also won the Best use of Facebook award on Monday.

Horse & Hound wins YouTube Equestrian Social Media Award

Horse & Hound has won its first Equestrian Social Media Award (ESMA) for the best use of YouTube in the UK and Ireland.

The award was announced at 2pm today (Monday 7 March) via the ESMA’s YouTube channel by awards’ co-founders Liam Killen and Rhea Freeman.

Horse & Hound’s ‘how to’ videos, rider interviews and behind the scenes action from top events such as Badminton and Burghley, attracted enough votes to beat second-placed Badminton Horse Trials, with the British Horse Society in third.

H&H’s website editor Carol Phillips says: “I’m delighted that the H&H team has won this award. The best international YouTube channel was won by Parelli.

In the second of the 15 awards to be announced this week, Spillers Horse Feeds won the best use of Facebook for their campaign in which the company donated feed to Redwings Horse Sanctuary in return for every new Facebook fan it received.

Parelli picked up its second ESMA by winning the international award for the best use of Facebook.

The remaining awards will be announced as follows:

Tuesday: Best use of social media by a charity, Best use of Twitter
Wednesday: Best use of social media by a professional rider, Best use of social media by an amateur rider, Best use of social media by a feed company, Best use of social media by a magazine.
Thursday: Best use of social media by a brand, Best use of social media by an event/competition, Best use of social media by a talking animal.
Friday: Most informative social media platform, Best use of social media by a riding school, Best use of social media by a tack shop/saddlery, Best newcomer

Horse & Hound has also been shortlisted for ‘Best use of social media by a magazine’ and ‘Most informative social media platform’.

“Each episode contains videos from the winners,” says Liam Killen. “The videos are amazing, some will make you laugh, some will make you well-up inside, but either way, we’re thrilled by the standard and can’t wait for the world to see them.”

New equestrian awards to recognise social media success

Calling all equestrian social networkers — awards to recognise the best tweeters, Facebookers and YouTubers in the horseworld were launched last week.

More than 1,500 nominations have already been made.

The Equestrian Social Media Awards are the brainchild of equestrian website provider Abbeyview Equine’s Liam Killen and equestrian PR Rhea Freeman.

The pair say they’ve seen an increasing number of equestrian companies and individuals embracing social media recently and want to celebrate this.

“I believe in social media for business and there are a number of people within the equestrian community who are reaping the rewards,” said Rhea.

“There have been some great campaigns that have helped equestrian charities [such as the Spillers/Redwings campaign] and the awards are a great way to highlight who really contributes towards the world of equestrian social media.”

Mr Killen added: “We want people to acknowledge who makes them laugh, who is interesting and who does social media well. We’ve had an absolutely amazing response — literally hundreds in the first few hours.”

Nominations close at midday on Friday (24 December). Those with the most nominations will be shortlisted and can then be voted for. Voting closes on 18 February and the winners will be announced shortly afterwards.

Categories are: YouTube channel, Facebook campaign, Twitter account, charity, professional rider, amateur rider, feed company, magazine, clothing brand, event/competition, talking animal, most informative, riding centre, saddlery and newcomer.

Following considerable international interest, each category has been split into UK/Ireland and international sections.
