I grew up knowing I wanted a job with horses, but I didn’t have a specific career path in mind at first. I just knew I loved horses – and that was that. Instagram didn’t exist and Facebook was somewhere that you posted pictures of nights out rather than a place of career research and inspiration.

I knew about the obvious jobs with horses – riding instructor, equine vet or groom, for example – but I hadn’t thought any further than that, and the careers advice at school just wasn’t set up for someone who wanted to do something a bit different. It focused on traditional professions and classic business roles.

Since then, I’ve done a three-year equine degree and spent at least a decade working in the industry. Over that time, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and speaking to hundreds of people with jobs in all corners of the horse world. Some of them work hands-on with horses on a daily basis, but many of them have what most people might consider a “normal job” with a horsey twist.

It’s hard to land your dream job – and not everyone does – as there are lots of people looking to turn their passion into a career, but knowing what’s out there in the world of equestrian jobs is the best place to start. And some has to do them, so why not you?

Jobs with horses you’re likely to be aware of

• Equine vet
• Veterinary nurse
• Farrier
• Equine behaviourist
• Equine nutritionist
• Saddle fitter
• Equine dental technician
• Equine physiotherapist, chiropractor or massage therapist
• Groom, ranging from a freelance groom in a specific discipline, to travelling groom or stud groom
• Rider
• Trainer
• Coach or instructor

Jobs with horses you might not have considered

Below are some examples of jobs in the horse world that you might not have thought of – it’s not an extensive list, but I hope it might spark an idea and give you somewhere to start your search.

You might find you benefit from a broader experience in the related industry at first, which when added to your passion for horses and knowledge of the equestrian industry, will make you a great candidate for interview in a more specific role.

Marketing and advertising

Every company will need to market and advertise their product or service in some way. Within these roles, you could be involved with creating marketing plans and assets, such as adverts or social media creatives, or developing strategies to target new audiences who would benefit from your product or service. These roles are likely to suit problem-solvers and good communicators.

Education and research

Does teaching and inspiring the next generation of the equine industry sound like something you could do? While being a maths teacher might not be something you’d ever contemplate, teaching other horse enthusiasts in a further education setting is a totally different prospect.

You might develop a specialist area – my lecturers taught everything from breeding science and equine husbandry to nutrition and biomechanics. Many people who work in higher education also conduct research alongside their teaching.

Communications

Most companies have a press and communications team or take on external PR support. These roles are all about getting a message out to the public. I receive emails from PR teams every day and they could include results from an event, advance information on a product release or potential news stories about welfare cases.

These roles are varied, but usually require decision making skills and the natural ability to connect with people.

Event management

Do you like the idea of being involved with the running of a big show like London International or Horse of the Year Show? These events can’t happen without a team behind the scenes who plan for months and years in advance to make them possible. Within these teams, you’ll have people responsible for schedules and entries, while others plan the trade stand layouts and sell the units to retailers.

These roles require excellent organisation skills, the ability to multi-task and work under pressure as there will be times where it’s “all hands on deck”.

Media and journalism

This world doesn’t end at event and news reporting. These creative industries need designers, editors, website specialists, photographers, producers, commentators and presenters, and there is work to be found within print and digital publishing, TV, radio, podcasting and social media.

There are a range of skills needed in these roles – if I look at my own team, we all have strengths in different areas. Some roles require creativity, while others focus on accuracy, but all require good communication skills.

Insurance and law

From underwriting and customer service, to finance and legal services, there are a range of opportunities in these areas. In each case, it’s unlikely that you’ll spend any time with horses in person, but you can use what you know as a horse owner to identify with clients and understand their needs.

In jobs like this, it’s easier to separate your own horse life from your work, while still doing something connected to the world you love. These jobs would suit an analytical and logical thinker.

Retail and ecommerce

Are you one of those people who can sell anything to anyone? Do you love equestrian products and fashion, or a passion and talent for product design? There are a wide range of roles in retail, from working on a shop floor or managing an online equestrian retailer to working on a trade stand at major equestrian events.

Working in a customer facing role requires excellent people skills, while managing an ecommerce website would need particular IT skills. Everyone working in retail benefits from customer service experience.

Business support

Some of the more practical professions require a wide range of support staff. There are people behind the scenes at veterinary practices and welfare charities, for example, who do crucial work that isn’t directly involved with a horse’s daily care.

These roles could include office management, customer services, human resources or finance and payroll, and are likely to require an organised person who enjoys working as part of a larger team.

What to consider when looking for a job with horses

If you’re set on a career connected to the equestrian world, thinking about the following might help you narrow down which jobs with horses might suit you:

• Your skills and interests outside of horses – what are you particularly good at and what do you get satisfaction from doing well?
• Level of horse involvement – do you want to be behind the scenes in an office or would you prefer to be at the heart of the action? Or a mix of the two?
• Career prospects – is there an obvious route for growth and development?
• Working hours – are you happy to be working early starts, evenings and weekends or would you prefer a regular 9–5?
• Travel – does national or international travel interest you?
• Employment prospects – is an area saturated with staff or are there always jobs available?
• Job security – how do you feel about working for yourself versus an employed role?
• Remote work – do you want the flexibility of working remotely or do you prefer in-person collaboration?

How I found my career with horses

I left school on a path to become an equine sports therapist, but soon realised that although I could do all the assessments and massage techniques, I just didn’t have the passion and couldn’t imagine going out into the world and doing it every day. Some people on my course had a feel and eye for it – I did not.

However, during my time at university, I discovered skills I didn’t realise I had – writing and editing – as friends soon asked me to read through all their assignments before they handed them in. I would translate complicated anatomy and physiology we’d learnt in lectures to a language they could understand, offer suggestions of ways to improve assignments, and make corrections of spelling and grammar. In my third year, I realised I’d like a job where I took information and reproduced it in a way that people could understand. As it turns out, this is skill required in the world of editing and publishing – finally I could see a path ahead of me.

Oh how I wish I’d known about this skill sooner – or someone had opened my eyes to the jobs that were linked to horses, but didn’t involve the obvious practical element. I also wish someone had pointed out that I didn’t want to work during other people’s leisure time – I wanted to be off when everyone else was, too, whereas for other people the 9–5 is something they purposely look to avoid. I also didn’t want to be self-employed – there are certainly benefits, but at the time it wasn’t for me.

Over the last decade, I’ve worked my way through the publishing industry, carving out my niche. I am now deputy website editor at Horse & Hound but if you’d told me 10 years ago that I’d specialise in ecommerce and SEO as part of my ideal role, I wouldn’t even have known what they were. This just goes to show that there are lots of opportunities out there and as the world changes, businesses (and possibly your career) will adapt, too.

Catherine Waterfall spoke to individuals currently working as freelance grooms, and Bethany Stone caught up with Lucy Katan of the British Grooms Association for the essential information

Wondering how to become a freelance groom? The idea of being your own boss is appealing to many, and the freedom to choose your hours, clients and rates sounds liberating on the face of it.

Rachel, a 34-year-old former senior manager in the corporate world, decided to become a freelance groom in 2018, giving up her lucrative career for a brave new lifestyle. “I love the variety. Instead of doing the same thing day in, day out, I have a whole pool of clients, which keeps the job fresh,” she tells H&H.

Cheshire-based Rachel says her high-paying corporate job was “amazing”, but it wasn’t making her happy. “My daughter was three and I was missing all these milestones,” she explains.

“So I quit. My husband asked: ‘What are you going to do?’ I said, ‘I’ll play with ponies for a bit,’” she laughs.

Rachel worked for a livery yard for a year to improve her fitness and then started attending competitions with a local event rider to “get my eye back in”.

“Everything has grown at an enormous rate – it’s just been incredible,” she says. “I’ve been fortunate, as a lot of my work has come naturally through networking and word of mouth, so talking to people is a skill you have to develop.

What is a freelance groom?

According to Lucy Katan, executive director of the British Grooms Association (BGA), a freelance groom is self-employed, and essentially their own boss. They:

• Choose their clients and the services they offer
• Set their own rates and negotiate terms
• Submit invoices and manage their own business finances
• Are responsible for paying their own tax and national insurance (NI) via HMRC self assessment
• Must provide or pay for their own insurance
• Can work for multiple clients

Self-employed grooms are not entitled to employee rights such as:

• Statutory sick pay
• Holiday pay
• Maternity/paternity leave
• Employer pension contributions

What insurance do I need to be a freelance groom?

Good insurance cover is a must, and should include public liability, which protects against claims made by third parties who suffer an injury or property damage due to a freelancer’s negligence.

As well as public liability cover, Lucy recommends:

• Care, custody and control cover – animal-specific clauses that protect you if a horse in your care is injured or dies due to your negligence
• Personal accident insurance – essential since freelancers don’t get statutory sick pay and accidents do happen with horses

How much do freelance grooms charge?

While rates of pay vary depending on experience, services provided and distance travelled, the average for working at a local yard is around £15 per hour, whereas competition grooms charge an average of £25 per hour.

“A lot of people think going freelance means charging more, but every extra cost becomes your responsibility – sick days, holidays, equipment, transport. You have to build everything into your bottom line,” Rachel warns.

Becoming a freelance groom: what is the reality of the job?

Many grooms take the plunge into a freelance career are happy to swap job security for more independence, as is the case for 31-year-old Becca Nicholson.

“I decided to go freelance to have more flexibility and a healthier work-life balance,” she says. “Before, I’d never be able to switch off and would feel guilty taking holidays or time out. So it was time to think of myself.”

But while freelancers have the freedom to choose, the work isn’t easier. “Any competition day is generally long – averaging about 12 hours,” Becca adds. “So you must be prepared for early starts and late finishes.”

Variety is a huge part of a groom’s life. “I’ve worked for Andrew Downes for nearly six years, but I also have a showjumping client who only uses me twice a year,” says Rachel. “I love joining Team [Harry] Meade for their five-stars each year, and some jobs are one-offs.”

Rachel adds that it’s important to be flexible, and slot into whatever team you’re working with. “Being personable and willing to listen is vital,” she adds. “You have to be a sponge as there’s no ‘your way’.

“One of the ongoing challenges is ensuring that invoices get paid,” she continues. “Being upfront about costs, payment terms and what you expect from clients makes all the difference.

“The resources on the BGA website are brilliant for people who are just starting out, and communication really is key.”

Tax and finances for freelance grooms

Insurance isn’t the only cost to a self-employed groom. “There are accounting and bookkeeping costs if you choose professional help, as well as time spent on marketing, admin and client relations,” says Lucy. “You may also have the cost of a work uniform and equipment, such as clippers, to think about.”

While employers pay through pay-as-you-earn (PAYE), which deducts NI and tax automatically, and provide statutory benefits such as sick pay and a pension, self employed grooms are responsible for this themselves.

“You must register with HMRC as self-employed (usually as a sole trader) if your freelance grooming income exceeds HMRC thresholds,” says Lucy.

“Once registered, you file a self assessment tax return yearly and pay income tax and NI on profits.

“If your turnover rises above the VAT threshold (which is high at £90,000), VAT registration becomes relevant — but most sole-trader grooms are below that.

“If you earn less than a set amount, you may not need to register right away – and HMRC’s thresholds change – but the safe rule of thumb is to register before you send your first invoices once you expect to earn significant income.”

Lucy emphasises the importance of tracking your finances, which includes:

• Filing tax returns/self assessments on time
• Holding a separate business bank account
• Setting aside money for tax and NI contributions

How can I make my business a success?

Paperwork and finances are a big part of how to become a freelance groom, but not all. “Hard work, passion and having a professional, friendly nature go a long way and get you noticed,” says Becca.

“I love meeting people, getting to know how different riders do things and learning,” Rachel adds. “Building a confidential and trusting relationship is essential as they need to feel they can rely on you completely.”

In practical terms, Lucy says freelance grooms can build their brand by listing themselves in relevant directories, such as the BGA freelance grooms directory.

“Using client agreements and having insurance shows clients you’re serious,” she adds.

She also recommends standardising your business process with clear booking terms and cancellation policies, as well as implementing formal quotes and invoicing.

She also advises joining an industry body. “BGA membership gives you insurance deals, contracts and marketing tools and professional credibility,” she adds.

Be aware of false self-employment

“False self-employment is a huge problem within our industry,” says Lucy. “We speak to grooms on a weekly basis who have been told that they are self-employed, when the reality is that they should be an employed member of staff.”

If a client starts treating you like an employee, they might:

• Set fixed hours
• Dictate your rate of pay
• Not allow you to work for others

Lucy says it is wise to stop and reassess the situation. Steps you can take include:

• Review your client agreement and clarify your status
• Assert your independence (you decide your hours, negotiate terms, take on other clients)
• If the situation doesn’t change, consider renegotiating your role as a proper employee or politely walking away
• If necessary, get advice from the BGA or Citizens Advice

Employment law can be complicated, so it is well worth seeking professional advice. “A groom is never, ever told that they are self-employed or freelance – it’s a decision that an individual will make themselves as they are setting up their own business,” Lucy adds.

“HMRC can reclassify you as an employee, forcing back-payments of tax and NI and meaning statutory rights should have applied — this can be costly for both you and your client/employer.

“If unsure whether you are falsely self-employed, you can use HRMC’s employment status checker or contact the BGA for advice.”

• Our ideal candidate would have experience working on a print publication or online (not necessarily in the equestrian field), but we are happy to consider applications from people without this experience, if you fulfil the other criteria and show the right attitude and willingness to learn.
• Knowledge of Indesign and WordPress CMS would be an advantage but is not essential.

This is a part-time role working from home three days a week, with occasional required visits to our Paddington, Bath or Winnersh Triangle offices. We are flexible on what days/hours are worked and plan to discuss this with candidates at the interview stage. There will be a requirement to work a full day on the Monday press days following the biggest shows each year (approximately eight per year). The job includes opportunities to travel within Britain.

A top rider might have ridden around Badminton, won Olympic medals and not stepped inside a riding school for 20 years – but they will recognise that anyone with experience working at a riding school has learnt the basics and notched up their fair share of practical experience.

4. Confidence boost

Working at a yard is a great opportunity to build on your communication skills — whether it’s chatting with like-minded people in the tack room over a cup of coffee, or having to deal with highly strung parents, or nervous pint-sized jockeys.

5. Get the edge

If you’re looking at applying for university in the not-so-distant future, a regular job to which you have shown commitment can look very attractive to universities where places on courses are competitive (even more so if you are looking at a future career involving animals…).

6. And finally… A wake-up call

It can be tempting to while away a long Saturday morning in bed, on your phone, but commitment to a job — and the prospect of the sack if you switch off your alarm again — will tempt you out of bed, and keep your parents on side. And surely it’s more enticing than a paper round?

The successful candidate will also have good organisational skills and be IT literate, to cope with the demands of a fast-paced, weekly magazine, while juggling this with working on our website.

We are recruiting for a dressage and sport horse breeding editor and products assistant. This is a full-time role working from home, with occasional required visits to our Paddington, Bath or Winnersh Triangle offices. The job includes opportunities to travel within Britain and potentially occasionally internationally for work.

Finding employment after education is key. Horse & Hound discovers which of the versatile equine-based courses are most likely to get you a job...

WHETHER you are a school leaver looking for your next step in education or are on the path towards a new career, you’re not short of choice when it comes to degrees, certificates and diplomas in the equestrian industry.

“The most versatile courses that colleges run for school leavers are level three diplomas which cover a wide aspect of the equine industry via theory and practical units,” explains Helen Cranfield-Findlay, head of equine at Berkshire College of Agriculture. “Each unit has some practical assessment which is why these qualifications are more recognised by the equine industry.

“Level three diplomas not only give students an overview of all aspects of the equine industry, they also allow progression directly into a practical role such as groom, vet nurse, working for a governing body, insurance companies, stud hand, equine events organisation and instructor, as many learners sit their British Horse Society exams alongside this qualification.”

A number do progress to higher education courses such as nutritionist, lecturer, veterinary physiotherapy and business management.

The Royal Agricultural University (RAU) offers a number of undergraduate equine courses, including BSc (Hons) programmes in applied equine science and business, bloodstock and performance horse management, and international equine and agricultural business management.

“Graduates in equine subjects develop first-hand appreciation of the business aspects and the day-to-day running of equestrian establishments, gain transferable skills in science and business and complete an industry placement to boost their employability,” says Rachel Jones, interim communications manager at the RAU. “The teaching team has great links and experience working with various elements of the equine industry.”

The RAU says that all their equine degrees equip graduates with the skills and contacts required to succeed in the equestrian sector.

“Recent graduates have taken up roles as bloodstock agents, yard managers, bloodstock account managers, research scientists and marketing and communications assistants to name but a few, working with employers that include Highclere Stud, Lingfield Equine Vets, King Power Racing, Newbury Racecourse, Racing Post, NFU Mutual, the Racecourse Association and Plusvital-Equinome,” says Rachel.

Working in racing

IF racing is your area of interest, the National Stud diploma is a comprehensive introduction to a career in the thoroughbred bloodstock industry.

“Students work alongside stud staff during the breeding season to hone their practical skills and gain a fuller understanding of all areas of stud work,” explains Anna Kerr of the National Stud. “Regular evening lectures cover everything from veterinary practice and stallion selection to marketing and the business elements of stud management.”

The National Stud diploma is recognised worldwide throughout the bloodstock industry.

“Students benefit from our international connections and have regular mentoring sessions to guide them in the next steps in their career,” continues Anna. “In addition to the diploma, students also graduate with a level three certificate in thoroughbred stud practice accredited by 1st4Sport.”

There are also degree options in the racing industry, such as the BSc in equine science and thoroughbred management at Abingdon and Witney College with Oxford Brookes University.

“Students take their third year as a placement or a mix of different placements around the world,” says Rose Scofield of Witney College. “This puts them in an excellent position once they have graduated to return to the industry they were involved in, or to gain places on graduate schemes such as Godolphin Flying Start where they have two years in the racehorse industry.

“We have graduates in many positions with places like Weatherbys and the British Racing School [BRS]. The networking aspect of the placement year also gives students brilliant opportunities to gain employment, such as one who went straight into a career as a bloodstock agent and another who is now working in racing television.”

Equine physiotherapy

FOR those with an interest in physiotherapy, The Open College of Equine Studies (TOCES) offers a level five equine sports massage and level six equine physiotherapy diploma which permit graduates to work in the industry.

“The application of equine manual therapies is of growing interest within the equine industry,” says Yasmin Stuart, equine physiotherapy programme manager. “TOCES offers two equine therapy qualifications which, upon completion, allow graduates to obtain insurance, join voluntary governing bodies and establish their own freelance equine therapy practice working within the guidance of UK Government legislation.”

The level five diploma in equine sports massage and rehabilitation provides a thorough understanding of equine anatomy and physiology, orthopaedics, and the application of massage therapy skills and rehabilitation techniques, while the level six equine physiotherapy diploma programme encompasses all the above plus an understanding of physical therapies, electro-therapies and rehabilitation strategies used to restore and maintain the horse’s mobility, function and performance.

Already working in the equine industry, but fancy a change of direction? A new veterinary nursing school, VetPartners Equine Nursing School, was launched in 2019 to ensure equine nurses receive the best-possible training and skills. Applicants must already work at an equine veterinary practice.

Based at Liphook Equine Hospital in Hampshire, the two-year diploma awards successful students a City & Guilds level three diploma in equine veterinary nursing.

“They become qualified equine veterinary nurses eligible to register with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons,” explains Joanna Browne, PR and communications manager at VetPartners Ltd.

“Students benefit from using the facilities at Liphook and visit the veterinary hospital on block release for six weeks each academic year, which enables them to study while continuing to work at their own practice.”

Coaching and teaching

THERE are also coaching degrees for people interested in a teaching career, such as the BSc (Hons) in equine performance coaching at Warwickshire College Group.

“Knowledge of areas such as sports psychology, nutrition, biomechanics, fitness and new technology are vital to coach horse and rider partnerships to fulfil potential and reach peak performance,” says Sarah Winnett, higher education and international marketing officer.

“This course is suited to students who are keen to study equine to degree level in order to successfully coach horse riders of all levels. While studying students have the opportunity to ride weekly and will also gain a 1st4sport level two certificate in equestrian coaching, helping students to secure their chosen career.”

For those already with degrees or previous work experience in more administrative, marketing and operational roles, the British Horseracing development programme is a great choice for gaining further experience and developing skills.

“The programme starts with a free, comprehensive two-week residential introduction course usually held at the BRS in July,” says Zoe Elliott, head of careers marketing and recruitment at the British Horseracing Authority. “It includes speakers, field trips, learning opportunities, personal development and networking. The course gives an insight into many of the organisations and their functions within the industry. Participants then go on to their selected paid placements which are usually eight weeks, but sometimes longer.”

Equine apprenticeships

LEARNING on the job means that you get paid while learning a skill, which is a great way to embark on a career.

“Apprentices have all the rights of an employee, while also being allowed time to learn and train with their employer and their trainer coach,” says Haddon Training marketing executive Kate Arkinstall.

“Many apprenticeships can be tailored to the specific area of the equine industry that the apprentice wishes to focus on. For example, our equine groom and senior equine groom apprenticeships can be focused around racing, breeding, riding, or non-riding. This allows the learner to hone their skills in the area they wish to progress into. Learners are in a real, working environment and learning practical skills on the job.”

Emilia Bishop, an apprentice at Judy Harvey Equestrian, says: “The best part of my apprenticeship so far is how much confidence I have gained and the progression in my riding. The apprenticeship really appealed because I knew I would be able to ride more but at the same time gain valuable experience, receive a great qualification and further my knowledge to help me develop my own business in the future.”

Working with horses is hard graft, so it’s no surprise that the equestrian industry demands some of the toughest initiations.

Finding and retaining good staff can be a challenge for all employers and was one of the topics up for discussion at the recent Equestrian Employers Association conference. Below we look at advice and tips from some of the speakers on how to be a good employer and how to avoid a high turnover of staff.

1. When recruiting have a clear idea of what you are looking for. Look at prospective employee’s CV’s and how long they have spent in previous jobs — this gives you an indication of how long they are likely to stay with you.

“Staff are your biggest investment. Make time for recruitment and invest in the process,” says Chris Hewlett, managing director at Haddon Training.

2. Check their references are genuine and trust your instinct – you will have a sixth sense as to whether they will fit well into your existing team.

3. Be professional at all times. Ensure employees have the correct employment status, have a written contract and that the minimum wage is observed. Have reasonable working hours and expectations, plan their holidays, be clear on benefits and ensure they are delivered.

4. Get to know your employees. Treat them like another person and find out what makes them tick both personally and professionally. That way it is easier to recognise if there is a problem or something isn’t right.

“Be approachable. Bullying develops because people won’t communicate,” says Rosie Lord, owner of Berkshire Riding Centre which employs 15 members of staff.

5. Recognise achievement in order to install a sense of responsibility and job satisfaction.

6. Go the extra mile.

“We give all our staff a cake and card on their birthday and try to make their day special. Little gestures like that — especially if they are away from home — really make a difference,” says Rosie.

7. Encourage, motivate and inspire your employees.

8. Be patient, flexible and adaptable.

“Without employees I don’t have a business, they are my extended family. I hope they will bend a bit for me and I will bend for them,” continues Rosie.

“I’m always checking my staff have had breakfast, have drunk enough water and have applied sun cream when it’s hot. They are busy and sometimes forget the obvious things like eating and drinking which are so important particularly when they are working hard,” concludes Rosie.

Working with horses is hard graft, so it’s no surprise that the equestrian industry demands some of the toughest initiations. Madeleine Silver talks to those who have taken the plunge

If a horse came out of one of the late Badminton-winner Sheila Wilcox’s boxes with straw in its tail, 10 pence had to go in a box; stable floors had to be clean enough to eat off; summer sheets were ironed and her honesty was startlingly refreshing – she had no qualms in telling a working pupil that her hair was greasy. But two years spent on Sheila’s Cotswold yard was, says Olympian Mary King, the making of her.

“[She] was a perfectionist,” the now 58-year-old remembers in her autobiography. “The awful thing was that if she was critical of someone else, you couldn’t help but be relieved that you were getting a break.”

Fast forward more than 40 years, and the road to the top is often no smoother for those with their hearts set on a life working with horses; eye-wateringly early starts, bruised muscles and equally battered egos are par for the course.

Trooper Laura Angus, soldier

Camaraderie and physical resilience are vital to surviving the Household Cavalry’s 12-week riding course for new recruits. Laura Angus had a childhood spent riding on her side when she embarked on the course last year – but that didn’t ease the pain of the first four weeks spent in the indoor school without stirrups.

“Having ridden before, I didn’t know if it was going to be a bit tedious [at the beginning]. But because they took everything back to basics, it got rid of any bad habits,” she says. While others who’d never sat on a horse might have taken more tumbles than Laura, it was the grooming regime that was her steepest learning curve.

“It was like you were going to a show every single day,” she says. “Before you ride in civvy street you flick your horse off, pick its feet out, make sure there’s nothing where the girth goes and that’s about it. [Here] you have to be able to run your hands through the horse’s mane and tail with ease. But it’s amazing how quickly it becomes second nature.”

Now in situ at Hyde Park Barracks in London on ceremonial duties, cleaning the reams of tack can be done in just an hour – two hours shaved off the three-hour slog that ensued on starting out.

“It’s only looking back that you realise how fast you have become at things,” she says, reminiscing about a schedule that included everything from bandaging to feeding, with regular night guards on the yard adding a dose of sleep deprivation. “For the people who had never been around horses I think it probably was a lot more full-on, because they didn’t realise just how time-consuming horses are. Everything that civilians might learn in a couple of years of being on a yard get thrown into that 12 weeks. But it doesn’t matter how long your day is, you learn to push through.”

Kieran King, racing yard exercise rider and groom

When Kieran King embarked on the British Racing School’s (BRS) foundation course last winter – an apprenticeship programme designed to open the doors of the racing industry – he’d never been on a horse.

“I couldn’t even tell you where you were meant to sit,” he says. “My mate had come off the horse that I was about to ride on that first day, and I remember laughing at him thinking that that couldn’t happen to me. But I got knocked clean out. Once I was back on my feet, I got back on the horse, but I couldn’t tell you what direction we went in.”

A year earlier, the 21-year-old had his heart set on a career playing football, when an injury scuppered his plans.

“The BRS popped up on Instagram one day and I happened to click on it,” says Kieran, whose equestrian experience until then extended to watching racing on TV. His initiation into Newmarket life was on the BRS’s ground-based yard staff course – six weeks of gruelling 4.30am starts, mastering mucking out, feeding, horse health and handling. But having lost weight and caught a glimmer of life on the track, he set his sights on becoming a jockey, signing up for the 14-week foundation course, which coaches non-riders from the safety of the indoor school to navigating the gallops.

“For the first few weeks I thought to myself: ‘No, I’m not putting up with this every day’,” he says, wincing at the recollection of his sore legs. “I thought I was out of breath after football, but this was on another level.”

Now on the other side, working for Flat trainer Chris Wall – and pinching himself each morning as he heads out on the hallowed turf of Newmarket Heath – he’s realised the value of the friendships he formed on the course.

“My roommate and I will always stay in contact,” he says. “When you have a bad day, you look to those people [for support], and vice versa.”

Rosie Heath, equine veterinary nurse

For others it is emotional reserves, rather than physical robustness, that are called upon to carve out their chosen path. Newly qualified equine veterinary nurse Rosie Heath admits that she’s found foals to be the toughest stumbling block.

“Everybody loves a foal, but they take huge amounts of nursing care and time. You get really fond of them and when they are very poorly, that is hard to deal with,” she says.

Six years spent grooming before making the leap, aged 24, to veterinary nursing stood her in good stead; a demanding medley of preparing horses for surgery, cleaning surgical instruments, dressing wounds and carrying out diagnostic tests. But balancing training on the job as an apprentice had its challenges.

“It was full-on. I was working as a nurse full time, including doing my share of the out of hours rota, and also going to Hartpury one day a week to complete the degree,” she says.

Now working as a clinic nurse at Liphook Equine Hospital in Hampshire, her busiest day to date involved three elective surgeries with a colic surgery thrown in the middle.

“You can’t be squeamish to do this job, for sure,” she says. “And you have to be empathetic with the owners, but honest too. It’s about being prepared and learning to adjust, whether it’s an elective joint surgery during the day or an emergency c-section in the middle of the night. But put the work in and you’ll definitely reap the rewards.”

Claire Gordon, welfare charity field officer

A decade working for World Horse Welfare hasn’t diminished the intensity of being faced with horses living in implausibly difficult situations for Claire Gordon, the charity’s chief field officer. When she decided to move into the sector, first working for the RSPCA as an inspector, an intensive training course beckoned; Claire found herself abseiling off cliffs to rescue sheep, working in a slaughterhouse, navigating her way to animals stuck in remote locations and handling snakes.

“Give me a horse any day of the week!” she laughs. Her experience might have meant that when she started at World Horse Welfare “it was easier to hit the ground running”, but her days are still wildly unpredictable.

“I recently had a call at midday asking if I could come and help with a situation, and I was out that night until 9pm,” she says. “But it’s really rewarding. For me it’s about being able to help horses, and we’re often also able to help people at their worst moment. Taking people’s animals is always a last resort; charities are there to help people help their animals, and work out a way that they can keep them.”

Working alone on cases is one of the toughest aspects of the job, says Claire. “You can find yourself in the middle of nowhere, at the wrong time of day to draft in the help you need, while trying to figure out what the right course of action is. It can be anything from one right up to 100-plus horses. You have to be a problem-solver, with a cool head and lots of patience and determination.”

And there are cases that she won’t forget; the lice-ridden mare who made a remarkable recovery and was the muse for the first World Horse Welfare sculpture trail around Badminton, or the time when police dramatically descended on a case in Kent to help with hostile owners.

As well as the high-octane rescue cases, visiting rehabilitated horses in their new homes is also in Claire’s remit.

“Remembering where a horse came from and then seeing it being adored in its new home is amazing,” she says. “It really helps put things in perspective. A lot of people say: ‘Oh I could never do your job. I would be so angry.’ But I manage to keep a cool head because I always have the bigger picture in mind. And we’re not judging people; people don’t set out to be cruel. There’s always a human story behind every situation.”

H&H examines what measures announced in the chancellor’s summer statement could help struggling equestrian businesses and seeks reaction from the Equestrian Employers Association and an apprenticeship provider...

Bonuses for employees returning from furlough and extra money to take on trainees and apprenticeships could help equestrian businesses in the wake of the pandemic. While the support on offer is by no means a magic wand for companies hit hard by the impact of Covid-19, it could offer some assistance.

“Our plan has a clear goal: to protect, support and create jobs,” said chancellor Rishi Sunak in his summer statement on 8 July. “It will give businesses the confidence to retain and hire. To create jobs in every part of our country. To give young people a better start. To give people everywhere the opportunity of a fresh start.”

Measures that could help include the “eat out to help out” scheme, which has already been taken up by show venues including Keysoe. This involves a Government-subsidised 50% discount for each diner, of up to £10 per head from Monday to Wednesday in August plus a six-month VAT cut.

Other help includes a “job retention bonus” of £1,000 for businesses that retain previously furloughed staff until the end of January, a “kick-start” scheme for work placements of young people on universal credit, and apprenticeship and trainee bonuses of between £1,000 and £2,000.

Tullis Matson, president of the Equestrian Employers Association (EEA) told H&H he is “very conscious” of the furlough scheme coming to an end, and has already had an increase in people asking if there are any jobs with his company, Stallion AI Services.

“I’m quite nervous come October of what is going to happen, especially for some of the centres whose margins are very small as they could really struggle when money is tight,” he said.

Mr Matson added it is not simply a case of businesses themselves finding the situation tricky, but the knock-on impact of other job losses, such as liveries losing their jobs and no longer having that money to spend.

“I feel the Government is trying to help,” he said, adding the £1,000 bonus is “great for the short term”, but the longer-term economic picture remains unclear.

“That can help, but there is always going to be that eventuality when the furlough scheme stops, of how many people are not going to have jobs at the end of it.”

He said it is vital employees are not exploited for their love of horses to prop businesses up, and equally that businesses seek help where it is available.

“The Government is much more on it with enforcing the minimum wage now – and rightly so,” he added. “There is part of the industry that doesn’t want to be compliant with the law, but there is a larger section that slightly doesn’t know where to find the help, and EEA membership really can bring that help to them.

“If we can help employers, that in turn will help employees.”

Mr Matson also said exploring the possibility of taking on less experienced staff, where applicable within a business, can bring additional benefits other than the money the Government has set aside.

“We have people coming in here very green and new to the industry and they flourish,” he said, adding this has to be balanced with experienced staff.

Chris Hewlett, of apprenticeship provider Haddon Training, told H&H the additional funding is a “great opportunity” for equestrian businesses.

“That said, businesses must be viable and not take an apprentice on for the sake of it because there is money attached,” he said.

Mr Hewlett explained the money for traineeships and apprenticeships could add up to as much as £4,000, provided all the criteria are met.

“As a training provider, we are going to be very inquisitive of businesses we haven’t worked with before as there is a moral commitment for employers to support somebody through training,” he said. “It is taxpayers’ money, and as a training provider we have a responsibility with how that is spent.”

Since the Covid-19 lockdown, online learning is all the rage. Leslie Bliss takes a look at what it has to offer those who wish to upskill from the comfort of their own home...

Everyone’s doing it. From toddlers to pensioners, all and sundry have embraced e-learning since the Covid-19 lockdown. Learning online is more accessible and enjoyable than ever.

As the entire country has been confined, video conferencing has suddenly become mainstream. Everyone is using it – Zoom, Facetime, Microsoft Teams, Skype and Cisco WebEx to name but a few – from the BBC with its daily government coronavirus press conferences to Have I Got News For You, as well as schools and universities.

Online education providers have been inundated since the lockdown as e-learning has come into its own, even for equestrians. No, you can’t beat practical experience, but there is a huge amount you can learn.

After all, distance learning has been around for a long time, once upon a time reliant on good old-fashioned Royal Mail.

BHSII Julie Brega founded The Open College of Equine Studies (TOCES) some 32 years ago, offering what were then called correspondence courses.

“I was filling a gap in the market. While training British Horse Society (BHS) students on my yard, I was running evening classes for them, setting homework, and it progressed from there,” she says.

The college has come a long way since then, catering for complete beginners to those aiming for a degree-level diploma. There are 100%-online courses, but others require hands-on experience. For those, TOCES combines e-learning with practical study weeks at its new, purpose-built training facility in Suffolk.

“Our youngest student is 13, our oldest 72, and 20% come from abroad. Students fly in from all over the world for the study weeks – from the Singapore Turf Club, Hong Kong, Finland and South Africa.

“It’s been a big investment to set up; it takes a long time to develop a breadth of courses.

We have the advantage that we can use the best experts from around the world to contribute and develop the programmes. We have a team of around 20 advisers, tutors and lecturers. Students have their own course adviser from the outset. We use Moodle as our virtual learning environment. It provides access to study guides, planners, webinars, assignments and tutor feedback. There’s even a virtual coffee shop where students can socialise.

“Programmes start at £75 up to our most expensive, which is a four-year, level six equine physiotherapy diploma, which is £5,250 annually, including all the study weeks. This is good value for a degree-level programme,” points out Julie, whose students choose e-learning over full-time college and university courses as they are looking to fit study around other commitments, such as a job, horses and children.

“You can teach almost anything online, but you do need to handle horses in real life, which is why we provide blended learning. For our City & Guilds equine veterinary nursing course, there are nine different study weeks to teach all the clinical skills,” says Julie, whose former students include Dr Stephanie Valentin, now a lecturer in sport and exercise science at the University of the West of Scotland.

BHS Stage 4 senior coach and neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) master practitioner Sarah Tame was inspired to set up Equine Distance Learning (EDL) in 2010, while working as a lecturer at Merrist Wood College in Surrey.

“We are about delivering correct information to horse owners. We are geared towards hobby riders, people who want to learn to do the right thing by their horse, people who are thinking about buying a horse and some who are looking for a starting point for their equestrian career. Our aim is to give owners confidence while enjoying learning about horses,” says Sarah, whose company provides 100% online training based on BHS content and up-to-date research with the assistance of a handful of tutors.

“We encourage students to finish within a year and tutors give regular feedback. For some of the courses, students create videos of themselves doing tasks, which we then assess,” says Sarah, who has found that this way of learning appeals particularly to those who are shy or nervous.

Repeat business speaks for itself and EDL’s top student of 2018, Olivia Sanders, has completed 11 courses successfully: competition psychology, the foot and shoeing, horse identification, horse health, winter ailments, clipping, equine behaviour and psychology, equine nutrition, ride with confidence, introduction to equine massage and BHS Stage 1 preparation course.

Olivia says: “The pros are that you can complete courses at your own pace, in your own time, with no deadlines, which is a big plus for me as I am dyslexic. I had one-to-one support from the course director and there is a section when you are studying particular subjects online where you and other students can post thoughts, which is great for discussing different situations. It’s boosted my confidence. Also, the certificates bump up the CV, plus you don’t have to own your own horse.

“The cons are that you don’t have face-to-face social interaction and it can be harder to contact a course director than if you were in a classroom. It can also be difficult to stay motivated and ignore distractions when you are studying at home. Having said that, I would recommend it without hesitation.”

BHSAI Paula Clements set up Lingfield Equine Distance Learning in 1996 after she frequently found herself spending half an hour at the end of riding lessons giving her students advice related to horse care and management.

Now with 2,000 students on her books and a team of five tutors, she agrees with Sarah that motivation is the hardest part of distance learning. It is good to have a set space with a table and chair to study, rather than on the couch or in the kitchen with lots of distractions and interruptions. Find a place of your own. Turn the garden shed into a study. Turn off your phone to avoid social media distraction – mobiles are usually not allowed in classrooms, so avoid them with home study, too. Only study for short periods, so you look forward to getting your coursework out.

E-learning is metamorphosing at an incredible rate and enables tuition from some of the most respected instructors in the world, wherever you happen to be based. In 2016, Dressage Training TV – Ride With Your Mind launched in collaboration with Mary Wanless BHSI, BSc, for example. It provides videos, articles and live webinars covering subjects from rider biomechanics to test riding, with monthly membership from £17.50. Many coaches have started giving lessons online during the lockdown, too, negating travel time and costs. It certainly opens up a whole new world of learning.

Questions to ask before you sign up

With such a huge variety of online courses, it’s worth considering a few questions to make sure you choose the right one:

• Does the company’s website have the right tone and feel for you?
• Who founded the company, when, why and what are their qualifications?
• Who is the coursework written by and what are their credentials?
• Is the course based on a recognised training system?
• What is your aim; will the course provide you with the qualification you want? Are you looking to increase your knowledge in a specific area, prepare for BHS exams or gain a recognised qualification?
• How is the coursework provided? Some companies send you PDFs to print at home, others use sophisticated bespoke educational platforms for you to access it using a variety of formats, including videos and interactive, live webinars. Everyone learns differently, so consider how you enjoy studying.
• What is the pass rate? It will vary from course to course.
• How much support and feedback are provided?
• Check out any time frames. The beauty of e-courses is that you can work at a rate that fits around your life, but some courses, such as City & Guilds equine veterinary nursing, will have assignment deadlines. Make sure you are able to schedule these into your diary.
• What is your budget? Is it realistic? Remember, you usually get what you pay for, but there is also a certain amount of free, quality training available. The BHS offers a host of training guides and how-to videos on YouTube, for example. It’s a list of approved training centres and includes online ones, too.

Marketing your business used to centre around magazine advertising, but these days you can publicise yourself well on little or no money thanks to the internet and the rise of social media. PR, marketing and social media expert Rhea Freeman, a speaker at the Equestrian Employer Association’s conference last month, gives her advice for promoting equestrian businesses online.

1. Do your research

Think about your target market and where your audience hangs out. Are they found reading magazines, viewing websites or on social media? If it’s the latter which platforms do they prefer?

2. Social media is free, so why not use it?

“As well as not needing to cost anything, social media also allows you to promote yourself whenever you like. You are in control of when and how you promote yourself and what content you put out there,” explains Rhea.

3. “While social media is good for the above reasons, you don’t own it. If it goes offline then that can cause you problems. Algorithms on social media can also be tricky but everyone has to work within them; try not to get too frustrated by them as at the end of the day social media is a free tool,” says Rhea.

4. All businesses should have a website even if it’s only a basic one

A free website will help your SEO (search engine optimisation) and as well as visually representing your brand it also lets people know who you are.

“These days most people will Google people who they aren’t familiar with to find out about them. If they don’t have a website it makes you think ‘how legit are they?’” continues Rhea.

5. “You own your website so you can do what you like with it. You can’t do that with Facebook, Instagram and other social media platforms. If social media breaks down and you lose that presence, you still have a website and the ability to contact your client list (if you have a database set up) which ensures your business remains credible,” concludes Rhea.

With A Level results day in full-swing (15 August), you might be unsure as to whether university is for you. In the equestrian industry, there are plenty of career opportunities that do not require you to go to university, instead offering alternative qualifications to get you on the right career path. Here is a selection that might interest you…

1. Farrier

Being a farrier is a physically demanding job, however, it is also highly skilled and is often self-employed, which gives you flexibility in your career. Responsibilities include creating and fitting shoes onto horses, trimming feet and corrective shoeing following lameness or injury.

In order to practice legally, all farriers must register with The Farriers Registration Council.

Potential farriers, over 16 years, will need to complete an advanced apprenticeship placement lasting approximately four years, while also employed by an approved training farrier.

A 23-week training course is also required at one of the following approved colleges: Herefordshire and Ludlow College, Myerscough College (Preston) and Warwickshire College.

2. Racing stable staff

Working in the racing industry is an exciting, sociable career that requires a good level of riding experience in order to exercise thoroughbred racehorses.

Working on a racing yard also includes basic yard duties, as well as caring and turning out the racehorses to a high standard and accompanying them to the races.

It is advised that those hoping to work in a racing yard study an equine college course, before a stint at either the British Racing School or the Northern Racing College, which offer a variety of training courses — however, anyone aged over 16 can apply.

On successful completion of the level two diploma apprenticeship, students will be placed into employment at a racehorse trainer’s yard.

3. Saddler

Professional saddlers are skilled and qualified individuals who make and repair saddlery.

In order to become a qualified saddler, you will need to obtain level three of the City & Guilds Saddlery qualification and complete a four-year apprenticeship working alongside a qualified master saddler.

To become a master saddler, the above qualifications are required and you have to have been in the trade for at least seven years. There are also qualifications available to become a professional saddle fitter.

4. Hunt groom

If you take pride in turning horses out in tip top condition, enjoy riding horse of all sizes and aren’t scared of hard word, a career as a hunt groom could be for you.

You will need to have an interest in the hunting lifestyle and be enthusiastic. Helping out in a local hunt kennels is the best way to get a foot in the door in the industry.

Qualifications are not necessary in all hunt groom positions and each hunt will have different requirements, but riding and practical experience, plus being able to turning horses out to a high standard, is vital.

Additional qualifications, such as taking your HGV licence, will help you stand out to potential employers.

5. The mounted police

Mounted police officers work as part of the emergency services when extra control is required. Responsibilities include safeguarding the community, attending sporting events or demonstrations, ceremonial duties and general care of the horses and tack.

To become a mounted police officer, you have to be a normal police officer on the ground for at least three years initially, before being selected to join a mounted police section. At the moment you don’t need to have an university-level qualification to join the police, but this is due to change in 2020. Find out more about becoming a police officer.

While no previous riding experience is necessary to join the mounted police, it helps to be an accomplished rider and comfortable around horses. While there a number of mounted police forces across the country, getting a place in a mounted branch is very competitive.

6. The Household Cavalry

The Household Cavalry mounted regiment is made up of horse-mounted soldiers, who are most commonly seen taking part in royal and state ceremonies. The Household Cavalry also has a non-mounted regiment, which drive armoured vehicles.

The specialist training to become part of the Household Cavalry mounted regiment includes a 12-week course on riding and how to look after a horse, plus a four-week course on looking after the equipment, if you are going into a ceremonial role.

There is a variety of roles and trades within the Household Cavalry mounted regiment, including farrier, riding instructor, saddler, tailor (pictured top) and others.

The “disturbing” and illegal practice of false self-employment is still occurring in the equestrian industry, a survey has indicated.

The study, conducted by the British Grooms Association (BGA) last year, revealed that almost a fifth of respondents are told they are self-employed when this is not the case, which is breaking the law.

“This survey indicates that there is still a disturbing practice occurring in the equestrian industry, whereby employers are telling some employed grooms that they are self-employed, which is an illegal practice and tax evasion,” said BGA executive director Lucy Katan.

“Furthermore, grooms are also being denied their employment rights and benefits of being self-employed. In short, those who have been told that they are self-employed when they are not are suffering a double disadvantage.

“We would invite anyone who has been incorrectly told that they are self-employed to get in contact for advice.”

UK law states that someone is self-employed if he or she “runs their business for themselves and take responsibility for its success or failure”.

Those who are truly self-employed must be able to make decisions about their work, such as how much they charge and the hours they work.

False self-employment is illegal on employers’ part, as they are not making their contribution, but also for that of the grooms, who will pay lower tax rates than they should if they are registered as self-employed.

If you are keen to work with horses, taking an equestrian course at college will provide you with lifelong skills and qualifications for your future. But, with so many equine colleges to choose from, how do you know which is best for you?

Check out these useful tips to help you find the perfect place to learn:

• Make a wish list: Write down all the things that are important to you for the college to provide, be that excellent livery services or support for a learning difficulty, and prioritise which are the most important. Then make sure your chosen college ticks these boxes.
• Get advice: Advice from those close to you can prove invaluable when making life decisions. Talk to friends and family and allow them to help you through the process.
• Be open-minded: You may have been set to go to a certain college for years, but it is always worth considering a number of places so that you can make an informed decision.
• Think about your goals: Consider which qualification would be most useful to you — do you need a certain accreditation to secure your dream job, or are you studying to generally widen your equestrian knowledge? Once you have cemented your goals, you will find it easier make a choice.
• Work experience: Think about how much time you want to spend in a practical environment. If you want more hands-on experience, then make sure your college provides the opportunity for ample work placements.
• Home or away: If you decide to stay at home, make sure your college is not so far away that travelling will become exhausting and expensive. And if your horse is coming with you, will you be able to move from the yard to your lectures easily?
• Finances: Make sure that your chosen college is affordable. Living closer to home may seem less exciting, but could provide you with a more financially viable option.
• Visit colleges: Prospectuses can provide a helpful insight into a college, but it is difficult to form any real idea of what they are like without visiting in person. Attend open days and talk to current students and staff.
• Rankings: Although it is best not to get hung up on leaderboards, it can help you make comparisons between different establishments.
• Facilities: If schooling outside in the winter is your idea of hell, it will be important that your livery yard has an indoor arena. Similarly, if you prefer not to work at home, you will need to make sure your colleges provides a suitable space for you to study.
• Accommodation: Take time to view student accommodation so you know where you will be living.
• Free time: Think about what you like to do in your spare time and if your college will allow you to do these things. For example, hacking fans would need access to bridleways and socialites may wish to consider the pubs and bars in the area.
• Ask questions: Don’t be afraid to get in touch with colleges if you have any questions — that way you can sign up without any doubt in your mind.

Are you wondering how you’re going to land your dream job in the equestrian industry when you leave college or university? Horse & Hound finds out how to make yourself as employable as possible

1. Meet your careers adviser

Standing out from the crowd when applying for a job is vital in the current climate, and making the most of the resources at college is a great place to start.

One such resource is the college’s careers adviser, who will discuss career options, help find work experience placements, and assist with applying for jobs.

“For those undecided about their career path, impartial careers guidance is available from the careers office, in addition to the advice and support available from academic staff,” says Royal Agricultural University’s (RAU) Dr Andrew Hemmings, head of the centre for equine management and science.

“Students also have access to an online job portal, and there is considerable enterprise support available for students interested in self-employment on our website.”

2. Make the most of lecture demonstrations and talks from industry representatives

Alongside access to a careers advisor, students are also exposed to a variety of industry representatives through lecture demonstrations and talks.

“We regularly invite speakers to come and talk to our students. For instance, the British Grooms Association came in recently to talk about opportunities and give information about employment practices and regulations,” explains Mark Yates, careers coordinator at Writtle University College in Essex.

At Hadlow College, students have enjoyed lecture demos from the likes of Ben Maher, Mary and Emily King, Ben Hobday and Pammy Hutton, to name a few.

“We hold frequent lecture demonstrations as well as regular clinics with national and international trainers and riders, and put on careers events with a wide range of industry experts and further training providers,” says Sonia Wilkes, head of faculty for equine and business at Hadlow College.

“Alongside lectures from top riders, we offer tasters in horseball and mounted games along with cross-country clinics with Caroline Moore to help inspire those students wishing to progress in their own riding abilities and competitions,” adds Philippa Gerrard, head 
of further education sport, animal welfare 
and equine at Warwickshire’s Moreton 
Morrell campus.

3. Tap into your college’s alumni network

“Our students take advantage of a network 25+ years in the making with some high-profile alumni, such as Tim Hadaway,” RAU’s Dr Hemmings says. “Students are encouraged to learn good networking skills as contacts mean everything in the equine industry.”

Careers events are the perfect way to find out more about a career, and network with industry representatives.

“Our FILM [Faculty Industry Liaison Meeting] events promote effective development of our programmes in line with current industry feedback and requirements,” explains Jenny Paddison, acting higher education team leader, equine, and programme leader for BSc (hons) equine sports therapy and rehabilitation at at Hadlow College.

“They give us the chance to build strong relationships between our lecturing team and students, and local equestrian businesses. By giving industries the opportunity to see the students’ work and practical skills, the representatives can see how students’ skills are developed and the high standards that they meet. It’s also an excellent networking opportunity, and builds confidence and pride.”

4. Embrace hands-on experience

Many equestrian colleges centre around working yards, which are the perfect environments for students to gain hands-on experience.

“Yard duties encourage students to develop not only excellent practical husbandry skills, but also promote effective communication, teamwork, organisation, timekeeping and dedication,” explains Jenny Paddison. “Duties prepare students for groom, yard manager and stud-hand roles, but the wider employability skills are transferable to many more jobs.”

One such student to benefit from in-house experience is Tom Gilbert, who after studying an extended diploma in horse management at Hadlow and working part time on their yard, took up a full-time position as technical instructor.

“I did my work experience on a local showjumping yard, which led me to pursue a role with Ben Maher after completing my course,” says Tom. “After 18 months at Ben’s, I saw the advert for technical instructor at Hadlow and I started in October last year. 
I want to become a lecturer so it is the perfect stepping stone.”

At Hartpury, students have the opportunity to assist with the running of shows, and gain experience working in the equine therapy centre, rider performance centre, and marketing and communications department.

Former H&H blogger Fizz Marshall studied BSc equine science at Hartpury, during which time she volunteered at the equine therapy centre.

“Volunteering at the equine therapy centre then led to me earning a graduate assistantship, a type of working scholarship,” explains Fizz. “The assistantship allowed me to undertake an MA in equine business management, which has set up various aspects of my career so far. I was then asked to go back to the equine therapy centre as assistant manager, and was promoted to centre manager four years later. The work experience programme at Hartpury allowed me to gain a huge array of skills and get a foot in the door.”

5. Carefully plan your work placement

Colleges assist students in securing work experience placements in order to enhance their industry experience.

Hartpury approves around 150 equine work placements each year, including with local employers such as NAF, Tweenhills Stud, Carl Hester, and local livery and competition yards.

At RAU, all degrees feature a 20-week work placement in the industry.

“It is critical for students’ employability that they develop a good understanding of the equine sector, including opportunities available, and a good commercial awareness of the current challenges facing the industry,” says Dr Hemmings. “The industry placement is an excellent opportunity to do this, with many students making important contacts during this time which can lead to full-time employment after graduation.”

Former Warwickshire College student Annabel Willis landed herself a full-time job at Sir Mark Prescott’s Flat racing yard in Newmarket following a four-week work placement there in her second year of a level three extended diploma in horse management.

“I wanted my four-week work placement to count, so jumped at the opportunity to work with Sir Mark,” said Annabel. “I’m now there full time, and watching and learning from the best. I know that if I get a good reference from Sir Mark Prescott, it’ll be like gold dust.”

6. Are there any other qualifications you could be getting alongside your course?

Alongside their courses, students have opportunities to gain further qualifications such as British Horse Society exams, and certificates in health and safety, first aid and project management.

“Consultation with industry revealed that alongside a degree and work experience, the completion of industry-relevant short courses was considered exceptionally valuable,” Rosie Scott-Ward, vice-principal and dean at Hartpury College advises.

“Employers felt that evidence of these on an application form would significantly increase the likelihood of gaining an interview. To support this, Hartpury committed over £100,000 in 2016/17 to support students in gaining such certifications.”

7. Sign up to extracurricular activities

RAU students are encouraged to take part in extracurricular activities including membership of sports teams, helping to run other clubs, and positions on the student union and student ambassador roles, all of which can help to develop key employment 
skills.

Placements can be five days of toe-curling agony, and finger-tapping boredom — or it can set you on the right path for your chosen career. Hanna Lindon finds out the dos and don’ts

If you thought that work experience was just an excuse to slack off from studying, think again. A work placement can be another hoop that you have to jump through to complete your course — or it can be a life-changing experience that sets you up for a career in the equine industry.

From making contacts and collecting glowing references to gathering insight into what different jobs really involve on a day-to-day basis, the opportunities up for grabs are endless. So how can you ensure your first incursion into the world of work is a success?

Take a look at these dos and don’ts to set you on the right track, whether you’re going to work in an office-based equestrian company or on a yard.

DOs

✓ Be proactive. Find your own perfect placement rather than relying on your school, university or parents.✓ Be enthusiastic. “The more sulky you are, the less chance you’ll be offered the better and more responsible jobs,” says Peter Morris of the Royal Agricultural University (RAU).✓ Learn to manage your time. Arriving on the dot and getting tasks done within a time limit will impress your placement provider.✓ Take any extra opportunities offered to you. “You never know where it might lead,” explains Berkshire College of Agriculture (BCA)’s Kim Offord.

✗ Dress inappropriately. Sensible shoes and smart clothing will go down better than a mini skirt and full makeup.

✗ Hide your mistakes. “If you do something incorrectly then it’s best to notify your placement provider straight away,” adds Peter.

✗ Put yourself in danger. Talk to your manager about any task that concerns you.

✗ Don’t worry if the job isn’t for you. At the very least, work experience can be a chance to discover what you don’t want to do.

The “situations vacant” column has been particularly busy this year as jobs within hunt service become available and then positions are filled, which has a knock-on effect, filtering down through the ranks until hopefully everyone finds a suitable position.

There are two ways to progress within hunt service. Firstly, to climb the ranks of responsibility. Roughly speaking, the order of progression might go from kennelman or second whipper-in, to first whipper-in then kennel-huntsman.

In the latter role you are, as the name suggests, responsible for the care of the hounds and running of the kennels but still acting as first whipper-in on the hunting field, usually to an amateur huntsman — most often one of the masters. The top of the professional tree is, obviously, huntsman.

While it is possible to progress within a hunt, it is usually easier to move to advance, which also has the added bonus of adding to one’s experience in terms of types of hounds and country.

The second way to progress is by moving to a “bigger” pack. This is usually measured in terms of numbers of days hunted, although quality of country is also a factor and everybody has an unofficial league table in their head based on their own preferences. So one might move as a first whipper-in from a two-day-a-week pack to a three- or four-day-a-week pack, or to a pack with a perceived better country.

At 33 I am still a relatively young huntsman, but I can now look back on 17 seasons in hunt service. As with many of my generation, I went straight as a first whipper-in. This is more of sign of the times than of any particular brilliance on my part.

There are many fewer jobs available, with fewer kennels employing two whippers-in. There is also less demand for the jobs, making the progression up the ranks much quicker than days of old, and vital experience and maturity are not necessarily gained along the way.

Huntsmen 20 years my senior are far more likely to have entered hunt service as a second whipper-in, and 20 years prior to that they would likely have started in the stables as second horseman — a job now sadly defunct.

Joining forces

There has been much talk of late on amalgamation and, while I don’t want to dwell on specific cases, one great bonus would be that there would be fewer hunts.

“Why is that a bonus?” I hear you cry. Hear me out. Fewer hunts would mean bigger hunts with healthier finances and more country available to hunt, which hopefully would lead to better hunts with a better staffed kennels on more traditional lines. With any luck there would be fewer two-day-a-week packs and more three/four-day packs, which would have the result of increasing the number of junior roles.

It would also increase the demand for jobs so that hunts had an even greater choice of applicants and the career path would slow down, which in turn would add to the depth of experience within the profession.

Despite all the challenges that the hunting community faces, hunting is still a wonderful career option. As I walk out the Pytchley hounds on a morning and pass the streams of cars on their way to the office or the station, I reflect that there really is nothing I would rather do. If you can make a career out of what you are most passionate about, then you are blessed indeed.

So, I would certainly say to any young hunting enthusiasts, go and spend a few days helping in your local kennels and, who knows, you could live happily ever after.

Sophie Callahan turned her weekend hobby of equine portraiture into a full time job despite her dad’s doubts…

“I got into photography after I fell off my own horse and ended up going to shows with a camera instead. I’d never had any training but decided I quite liked it, so I started photographing events, which became of source of pocket money through university. Then after university I ran an event photography business, Big Image, with my dad, which turned into a national franchise.

“During that period, I found an equine portrait photographer online and thought ‘that’s what I want to be doing – it’s way more creative, it’s way more me’. My dad didn’t think there would be a market for that but I said, ‘I’ll do it at weekends as a passion project and see how it goes’. A year later we ended selling Big Image because I was so busy with equine photography shoots, my dad went back to a corporate job in London, and I never looked back.

“I have two types of days in my job; shoot days and editing days. I try and only do one shoot on a shoot day so my client gets as much time as needed, although when it rains shoots do back up because I’ve had to reschedule (a few weeks ago I had eight shoots in one week). A typical editing day is literally me getting up, putting on a clean pair of pyjamas and sitting at my desk and getting lost in editing. In a normal week I try and fit in three to four shoots and then two days of editing alongside admin and marketing.

“I do mostly portraiture. This kind of photography has been huge in America for a long time as having your photo taken there is par for the course; you have a toddler shoot, a maternity shoot, etc, whereas over here we’re taught it’s a bit self-absorbed to have your photo taken and put up on the wall. There is less of that thinking now and it is becoming much more fashionable.

“My shoots are very much guided by the horse and the owner because obviously nobody knows that horse like they do. So if they’re happy to get on bareback and gallop across the field, then great. But some owners will be like “absolutely not, we shall just stand there and look pretty”. I’ve had a few ‘trash the wedding dress’ shoots too.

“One of my most incredible shoots was with a stunt team. I photographed the horse in the new Beauty and the Beast film and the stallion that was in The Huntsman with Chris Hemsworth. The girl who runs the stunt team was galloping around at sunset on him with no tack on, which was just awesome.

“Accidents do happen on shoots sometimes. I often make the owners kiss their horse on the nose and one pony lifted his head at the wrong time and bust his owner’s lip. I just said ‘keep smiling, I’ll edit out the blood, it’s fine’.”

“One of the biggest things people worry about is what to wear and my top tip would be to wear something you feel totally comfortable in because that feeds through to the rest of the shoot. You do not want to be worrying about a dress riding up while your horse is spinning around on the end of the lead rope.’

“Use the free Horse Sounds app on your phone — press that and I guarantee you can get the ears forward.’

After years photographing celebrities in her signature portraiture style, Lucy Sewill decided to turn her lens to her other passion in life, horses. Lucy’s work in this field, as well the story of how her life has been entwined with horses, is detailed in her book Horses & Humans

“I did a lot of endurance riding when I was younger and I had this amazing endurance horse who had Cushing’s disease, which is common in horses but only one in a million people get it. I’ve had a lifetime of really random illnesses that really never made sense like heart infections, but once I had this horse and found out a lot about her condition, I thought ‘maybe this is something I’ve got’. I then went to my GP and it turned out I do have it.

“So when I got to the stage in my career as a celebrity photographer where I could start to choose my own subjects, I went to my publisher and said I want to do horses, mainly because of what had happened.

“Once my publisher said yes, I travelled to places such as America to see Monty Roberts and Dublin to see the urban cowboys as well as all around England, and tried to use the skills I had developed through photographing human beings in the equine world.

“I’d always been quite frustrated with horse photography because it doesn’t really necessarily show much of what’s really going on. What I like to do when I shoot is create a studio in an enclosed area and put the horse and person together and just see what happens. The horse always leads the shoot, so you never know where a shoot is going, especially if you take a horse’s tack off and give them that freedom. You can see what they really think of a person and they have wonderful facial expressions, which we don’t really see when they have bridles on.

“My favourite shoot took place at home, my acrobat friend set up her silks in the tree in my horses’ field. We just let the horses in and the pictures were of the horses naturally walking up to her to see what this person was doing in their tree.

“A more humorous outcome of letting the horse lead was the shoot with Chilli Morning, William Fox-Pitt’s former eventer. He’s a big and powerful stallion and was about to go off to the Olympics, and knew he was important. He was very good about standing on the back drop I set up for about 10 minutes but then he got bored, got hold of it in his teeth and ripped it as if to say ‘that’s it, I’m done’.”

Top tip for posing in a photo shoot with your horse:

“I would say be really brave and take the tack off and see what happens. You horse will be more interested in what’s going on, become much more expressive and you’ll get something very beautiful.”

Top tip for taking a picture of your horse:

“Put your horse somewhere different or do something different with it so it becomes a bit more interested in its environment. The horse just standing somewhere where it is normally all the time is probably going to look a bit dozy and not very alert.”

After a career mentor convinced her that she could combine her passion of horses and photography, Hannah Freeland now travels the world doing equine portraiture and photographing equestrian stars, all attracted to the whole photography experience she offers

“I’ve always had a camera in my hand, but I assumed that you couldn’t have a full–time job you love that combines all of your passions. Then 10 years ago I was really lucky that a great friend bought me a mentor to kick my arse weekly for a year. My friend said ‘look, you’re wasting talent here, you’ve got to create a full time equine photography business’. And that’s what I did.

“About 99.99% of my work is private portraits and 0.1% commercial work for some really lovely clients that I do about four or five times a year. The whole point of hiring me is to create artwork that will last for generations, the sort of thing mummies can pass to their daughters and they can pass to their daughters so they can see Granny with her pony.

“I also offer a whole experience. After the photo shoot has happened and I’ve edited the photos, I then either travel back to the client’s home or the client comes to me and we look through the images together on my big screen. We start off with a beautiful slide show to music and then we go through the images one by one. My clients then order frames, albums and prints. The digital versions are secondary; it’s all about getting these images on the wall, not stuck on an iPad.

“I travel a lot around the globe and am booked up for over a year, but that’s taken 10 years of proper hustle and graft and connecting with amazing people. I strongly believe that word of mouth is the strongest form of marketing. This is where collaborations work. I collaborate with trainers or top top players within a certain discipline, because once they see what I can do and the experience they get then they start telling followers, who trust them, about me. With my most recent collaborator, I gifted him a couple of big frames, an album and some digitals for him to use on social media, which is a package worth about £3,500.

“One of the highlights of my career so far was working alongside Harry Meade for three years, capturing everything behind the scenes as well as in front, (you have to run like a blue-arsed fly around the cross-country course to photograph six horses). Harry used a lot of the photos for his blog and social media. And his sponsors loved them so they got a lot of the photos – those shots of putting the saddle cloth on or the bridle that’s been sponsored are always very popular. I gave Equus Leather, who used to sponsor Harry, some lovely dog collar shots from when his dog was fast asleep in the lorry doorway.”

“It’s all about relaxing and having fun.”

“Don’t have a busy background so avoid anything like a tree or telegraph pole or a fence coming out of the horse’s head or back

“Also try and get the horse to relax and bend. Bends are so beautiful in horses. Get your horse in position and make your feet move, because your horse will absolutely watch what you’re doing and as they bend their neck to follow you, you’ll see that beautiful bend, and that muzzle will come out so stunningly.”

Volunteer programme

Olympia’s volunteer programme encompasses a variety of roles including ticket checking and greeting visitors at the front entrances, managing the riders seating, working with Olympia’s contracted security company (G4S) on the pubic seating and opening and closing the Olympia tunnel gates from the main arena to the collecting ring.

How much does it pay?

The volunteer roles are unpaid, but you will receive branded Olympia clothing to wear during your shift, meal vouchers that can be redeemed on site and two complimentary tickets to a performance. Accommodation and help with transport costs are not covered.

What sort of prior experience is required?

Prior volunteer experience is not necessary, just a willingness to work hard and be involved.

Catering and hospitality

Levy Restaurants UK is the main catering company at Olympia. They offer work for the duration of Olympia (17–23 December 2018) including a range of catering roles, host and hostess roles, box waiting and general waiting staff.

How much does it pay?

Pay ranges from £8 to £10 an hour, paid weekly so you’ll have your wages in time for Christmas and New Year. A lot of the guests tip generously as well. Half of the uniform is provided (shirts, aprons, bow ties etc.) excluding shoes and trousers.

What sort of prior experience is required?

Some experience in restaurants or events catering is ideal, although Andrew Thomas, Recruitment Officer at Levy Restaurants UK confirms he “would consider those who perhaps lack experience but are really charismatic, not afraid of hard work and want to be part of something really exciting.”

There are multiple roles available at horse trials up and down the country for BE volunteers, ranging from fence judging and stewarding to coordinating the lorry park and litter control. However, don’t expect a four-star gig immediately. Fence judging at Badminton and Burghley is a great honour and takes many years of experience.

Register with BE as a volunteer, which is free to do. BE membership is not required.

What sort of prior experience is required?

BE provides training (usually in the off season) for the roles of fence judge, scorer, controller, commentator and steward.

The competition: 113 applications for approximately 30 starters in 2016.

The course: the core topics include anatomy, physiology and animal health, with optional subject areas in animal genetics, animal microbiology, equine behaviour, stud management and equine therapy. Full-time in three years, or four years with a sandwich year.

The end goal: examples of graduate employment have included equine veterinary nursing, equine facilities managers, veterinary assistants, laboratory researchers, lecturing and teaching, nutritional sales, nutritional development and equine therapists. Further study can lead onto masters programmes including the MSc equine science or a PhD.

The appeal: “There is an increasing recognition within the equine industry and by prospective students that studying for an equine programme alongside gaining practical and work experience is the ideal preparation for a good career, with Hartpury equine graduates able to hit the ground running whatever career or further study pathway they choose,” says Rosie Scott-Ward, vice principal higher education at Hartpury University Centre.

Get the edge: three A-Levels at BBB or equivalent. This must include a minimum of two A-Levels including one in a biological science and excludes general studies.

Godolphin Flying Start

The competition: 100 applicants for 12 places annually.

The course: a management and leadership training program for the horse racing industry, which includes phases in UK, USA, Ireland, Dubai and Australia. Each trainee receives a full scholarship. Two years full-time.

The end goal: the programme aims to produce thoroughbred industry leaders. Careers include bloodstock, racing, breeding, media, sales, marketing, administration, consultancy and auctioneering.

The appeal: the success of its graduates, the quality of the training and education, and the scholarship.

Get the edge: “Excellent academic backgrounds and full-time employment in the thoroughbred industry — including time spent abroad or promotion to positions of responsibility — help to build towards a Godolphin Flying Start application,” says the programme’s general manager Clodagh Kavanagh.

British Horseracing Authority, British Horseracing Graduate Development Programme

The competition: 200-300 applicants for 20 places.

The course: the programme starts with a two-week residential course, held at the British Racing School in Newmarket, which includes a wide range of lectures from industry experts, field trips, personal development and networking opportunities. Graduates then go on to a paid work experience placement. Course lasts 10-18 weeks, depending on the length of the chosen work experience placement as they range from 8-16 weeks.

The end goal: the careers graduates go on to vary enormously from management positions at racecourses, bookmakers and the press to trainers’ yards, bloodstock sales and broadcasting.

The appeal: the programme is well known and highly regarded throughout the British racing industry, and many of the alumni are now key figures in horseracing. The course itself provides graduates with a wealth of knowledge and career opportunities.

Get the edge: the programme is intended for degree students who are in their final year of university or those who have recently graduated. A passion for horse racing is a must and it is beneficial to have some work experience in the industry.

Royal Agricultural University (RAU), BSc (Hons) international equine and agricultural business management

The competition: 72 applicants for 2016, of which 28 enrolled.The course: this well-established degree provides a thorough grounding in agriculture, agricultural economics, equine production systems, science, marketing, and finance and business management. A three-year course.The end goal: graduates go on to a wide variety of careers that include research/industry roles, bloodstock, journalism, event management, racing, farm/livery yard management, marketing and university lecturing.The appeal: the course is unique and offers an industry relevant qualification that dovetails agriculture with equine science and business. How to choose the right equine college and course for you

British Racing School, the apprenticeship in racehorse care

The competition: about 800 applications for 200 places each year.

The course: riding racehorses, taking horses racing, care of horses in the stable and at grass, caring for horses after exercise along with a host of personal development modules for the trainees including fitness training, diet and nutrition, personal safety and finance. The course is residential for 4-14 weeks (depending on prior experience) and then trainees are placed in a racing yard for an apprenticeship that lasts about 18 months.

The end goal: all will begin as riders/grooms, a small number go on to become professional jockeys but many others become travelling staff, yard managers and work riders.

The appeal: It gives young people a fantastic start in the racing world. It prepares them both mentally and physical for riding racehorses and allows those with a love for horses to pursue their goals in a structured, supportive manner.

Get the edge: “We are not interested in academic requirements but those who are successful are very physically fit,” says Carol Bramhill, recruitment manager at the British Racing School. “If a young person can get some experience in a racing yard during school holidays before applying it gives them a great insight into the realities of the job, however, we don’t expect them to be able to ride racehorses before coming.”

Equestrian employees aged 25 and over on the minimum wage will be entitled to a pay rise from today (1 April).

The minimum wage for all over 25s (except those in the first year of an apprenticeship) is rising from £6.70 to £7.20 an hour — an increase of 50p.

Lucy Katan, of the British Grooms Association (BGA), stressed this new “national living wage” is a legal requirement, and employers need to be prepared.

“That is going to have an impact on the employer’s business costings,” she told H&H.

“The only option for some businesses will be to increase the amount they charge for [their services]”.

Ms Katan also voiced her concern that the industry may become an “unfair employer”, preferring younger staff.

“Having said that, grooms are highly skilled individuals who work exceptionally hard and should be paid fairly,” she said.

“They should be rewarded with their salary for their dedication and skill.”

Eventer Kelly McCarthy-Maine currently employs one full-time and one part-time member of staff.

“It is a tough job — the hours are long and it takes commitment,” she said.

“But it is a professional role, so that should be recognised and employees should be rewarded.”

She added you “cannot put a price” on having the right person, but expects commitment to the job.

Simon Hall, who pays a freelance groom at his private yard, said he is “all for it” and that employees deserve to be rewarded for their work.

“You pay for what you get,” he said.

Mr Hall added that the way employees will be rewarded, in terms of money and other benefits, needs to be set out in a written contract, not verbally.

Meanwhile, racing has its own scales of pay for stable staff in line with government requirements.

The rise means the bottom-line of pay for racing staff on levels one to three (trainees, improvers and riders, grooms or yard staff) will be £288 for a basic 40-hour week compared to the current £268.

Staff aged 25 and over working on a consolidated rota — which is already over the minimum wage — will also receive a pay rise.

It also affects overtime payments for time worked away from the yard, for example when staff are at race meetings.

George McGrath, of the National Association of Stable Staff (NASS), said the living wage is a “good thing”, but there are “dark clouds” around the issue.

“I feel it is somewhat disappointing that racing has to have the government tell it that it is not paying its members enough,” he said.

“I would have hoped racing could have seen the work the lads do is worth more than the national minimum wage.”

He added he does also acknowledge the majority of the industry pays above the minimum and would advocate that a career in racing is a good way of life.

A spokesman from the British Horseracing Authority added: “While we are aware that staff wages in racing are, generally, higher than in other equine industries we would welcome anything that helps provide more funding to our grassroots.”

He said the BHA is working with the NASS to provide better career prospects and progression for those employed in the sport.

“To become a hunt groom you need to have a real interest in the lifestyle and bring determination and enthusiasm to the role,” says Jane Copsey of Haddon Training, which offers apprenticeships to those wishing to work in kennels.

The most important point is to make sure you enter into hunt service with your eyes open.

“I wouldn’t suggest becoming a hunt groom to anyone unless they have done some work in kennels,” says Sue Tutcher, who is the Warwickshire Hunt’s stud groom.

“You need to be prepared for long days. You may be up at 3am for autumn hunting, but you still have to finish off the horses in the evening.”

It’s worth contacting your local hunts to see whether you could help out in kennels.

“[Voluntary work] may lead to your perfect job in the future,” says Lucy Katan, executive director of the British Grooms Association (BGA).

Qualifications are not necessary in all hunt groom positions and each hunt will have different requirements.

“It’s far from nine to five and is hard work,” says Charles Carter, master and huntsman of the West Norfolk. “For this reason we find hands-on work experience outweighs college qualifications.”

Lucy adds: “My advice is to get qualifications under your belt, whatever they may be. But think outside the box and consider things like taking your HGV licence.”

But she warns: “Don’t believe you’ll get a job solely on qualifications. You must have practical experience, too.”

Hunting and riding experience will stand you in good stead.

“You need to be able to get on and ride most horses in most conditions,” says Sue Tutcher. “Many horses are the most fantastic hunters, but can be quirky at home.”

Sue also emphasises the importance of practical knowledge.

“It’s knowing when to call the vet and when to fix it yourself,” she says. “It’s the stud groom’s job to educate hunt grooms through the season if necessary.”

In terms of what to expect, every hunt is different. Talk to the employer and make sure you are comfortable with the set-up.

“You must be paid at least the national minimum wage,” adds Lucy. “You could expect to look after between four and six horses and it is not uncommon to work a six-day week.”

“You have to take pride in your work,” concludes Sue. “If the horses aren’t in tip-top shape, the hunt staff can’t do their job properly.”

Reread your CV or application form and the job advert before attending the interview so you are familiar with what you said and the brief.

Working with horses will always require long hours in sometimes challenging weather conditions, and over the past few years employers have told H&H they are finding it tough to find staff.

It is a problem that is growing industry-wide, but has come under the spotlight recently, particulary in racing (Horse & Hound, 5 November). Figures show there is a shortfall of about 400 staff in the racing industry, with 100 of those being skilled work riders.

In order to tackle this, British Racing has launched a number of new initiatives to make the prospect of being a member of stable staff more attractive, investing £1m to address the issue.

Tackling a shortage in skilled riders

Part of the plan to combat the lack of experienced riders is to bring in equestrians from other disciplines.

In his comment in the National Hunt special (H&H, 5 November) trainer Paul Nicholls said the main difficulty he encountered was finding skilled work riders.

“It’s tough. Good riders are not always forthcoming,” he said.

In a campaign that started last month, the The British Horseracing Authority’s (BHA) careers team are now targeting equine colleges to attract riders outside of racing, and have produced a video campaign with trainer and former showjumper Rebecca Curtis on the benefits of swapping disciplines.

The BHA has worked with 13 colleges so far and said the reaction has been favourable.

“We want to show people they can move between sectors,” said the BHA careers team’s Zoe Elliott.

“People may have grown up with horses but not thought about racing. We need to break down the idea that the sports are an exclusive club and encourage the idea that that one discipline can feed into another; they could return to their original discipline later having learnt new skills.”

The lack of skilled riders is a country-wide problem, but is concentrated in some areas, especially Newmarket.

“I think it’s partly because there’s more competition, more trainers, more horses. But there also seem to be fewer people that want to do it — it’s a hard way to make a living,” said Gloucestershire trainer Fergal O’Brien.

Trainer David Pipe told H&H that it was “as hard as it’s ever been” to find staff.

“It’s a difficult job and all year round — maybe they’re put off by that,” he added.

In a further bid to find competent riders to fill the shortfall, a three-month social media trial was launched last month, targeting riders in Europe.

“It is all done in English, so they have to have a good standard of the language,” said Carole Goldsmith, director of people and development at the BHA.

“We are testing this new digital route and with luck we will find riders with good abilities and match them with trainers.”

Employer-led training opportunity

For those who feel they’ve missed their time for school-based training, a pilot employer-led training programme has also been set up to enable new recruits aged 19 years and over to enter the racing industry by learning on the job.

The trainer receives funding to take on the unskilled workers, who will learn “on the ground” at the trainers’ yards.

The National Trainers Federation’s Rupert Arnold told H&H the reaction from trainers at regional meetings late last year was positive.

“It’s still early days, but it has been well received and is an entry point for people who might have a lot of experience with horses, but not in racing,” he added.

Averting a crisis

The BHA wants 1,000 more horses in training by 2020, which means more staff in an already depleted pool, which is part of the reason the organisation is taking strong action now.

“We are not at crisis levels yet, but could be if we didn’t act,” said the BHA’s Robin Mounsey.

The Royal Agricultural University (RAU) has launched a new bloodstock degree for equine students looking to work in the racing and performance horse industry.

The new BSc (Hons) degree in bloodstock and performance horse management begins in September 2016.

Students on the three-year course will study horse physiology, ethics and production issues affecting high performance horses.

The course also covers business theory and practice with an emphasis on equine businesses.

All students complete a 20-week placement in an equine-related business to gain valuable work experience.

“This is a unique BSc(Hons) degree that will take students on a journey of learning and development which is targeted specifically at the high-level performance horse industry,” said Dr Meriel Moore-Colyer, dean of the RAU’s school of equine management and science (SEMS).

“The blend of fundamental and production science in the context of performance horse business will produce the innovators of tomorrow and help develop and ‘future-proof’ this valuable section of the equine industry,” she added.

The degree course has been developed after consultation with the thoroughbred and racing industry.

Students will go on visits to racing and performance horse enterprises and gain an insight into the different facets of the European equine businesses.

The entry requirements for the new degree course are either three Cs at A level with a science subject desirable or three merits in a BTEC. English and maths GCSEs at a minimum of Grade C level are also needed.

Applicants should also have some practical experience.

Students hoping to a pursue a career in the equestrian profession will now have a specialist site to help point them in the right direction.

A new website of equine-related college courses has been launched by recruitment specialists Equine Careers.

The website, launched earlier this month (10 December), gives details of the equine courses on offer at Hartpury College, Moreton Morrell, the Royal Agricultural University and Sparsholt College in Hampshire.

Equine Careers founder Emma Dyer said the range of courses on offer aims to “widen students’ horizons.”

“There wasn’t one place where the colleges could be compared and contrasted by potential students,” she said.

Other colleges offering equine courses are expected to be featured on the website in the coming weeks.

Equine science is currently one of the most popular courses Emma told H&H, followed by welfare and therapy courses.

“We’re actively seeking to promote useful, commercial skills. Equine science is vital to work in nutrition and feed,” she said.

Students looking at equine courses should seriously consider where the course is going to take them and the job opportunities available she advised.

“We’re geared to science, coaching and business management, slightly more commercially minded courses,” she added.

The new website — www.equine-careers.co.uk/equine-college-courses/ — is optimised for mobiles and tablets.

At Hartpury there are 14 equine courses listed ranging from diplomas in horse care and horse management to degree courses in equine science and new for 2016 equine science and therapy.

The college’s integrated masters equine science degree course covers nutrition, therapy and rehabilitation, breeding, behaviour and welfare, and health and disease.

There are also equestrian sports coaching and equine business management degree courses on offer.

At Moreton Morrell in Warwickshire there are 12 degree courses listed ranging from equine performance coaching to equine business management and the racing industry.

In Cirencester the Royal Agricultural University has BSc degree courses in equine management, international equine and agricultural business management, bloodstock and performance horse management and an MSc in applied equine science.

At Sparsholt equine students can take a diploma in equine and rider performance, a BSc in equestrian performance management or equine science or an MSc in equine behaviour, performance and training.

Two new initiatives have been launched by the British Horseracing Education Standards Trust (BHEST) to encourage young people to consider a career in racing.

The new “Racing to Work” scheme will support schools with racing-specific careers advice.

Meanwhile, the “Racing for Riders” programme will target those already taking part in other equestrian sports to consider racing as an option.

“BHEST is in a unique position to support through relevant education and guidance the work being undertaken by the racing and breeding industries to recruit and retain staff,” said the charity’s executive director Judith Allen.

“We want to inspire young people by opening up opportunities for training towards a career in the racing industry that they probably never knew existed, or perhaps felt was somehow out of reach.”

The BHEST currently runs a “Racing to School” scheme, which gives more than 10,000 schoolchildren a year the chance to learn about racing at a racecourse, stud or trainer’s yard.

The charity has also appointed former Great British Racing PR director Nick Attenborough to its board of trustees.

John Blake has joined the BHEST from World Horse Welfare as fundraising director.

“The future success of racing depends upon attracting young people into the sport, either as fans or as a career path,” said Nick.

John added that it is in the industry’s interest for the charity to generate ideas, choices and ambition among children of all backgrounds.

“I will be asking individuals and businesses who invest in racing and breeding to take up the opportunity to support and share in the success of BHEST’s development,” he said.

Record numbers of students are graduating from equine colleges this summer, but will they be able to secure jobs?

Over the next few weeks, equine students across the country will be donning robes and mortarboards for their graduation ceremonies.

They are among the first students to have paid the £9,000 annual tuition fees, and so will be graduating with huge debts.

So was it worth it? Will signing up for an equine-based education course have set them up on an equestrian career path?

Due to the double-dip recession, unemployment figures previously made for grim reading.

According to UK poverty statistics the unemployment rate for 16-24 year-olds rose from 15% in 2008 to 20% in 2010 (features, 17 January 2013), and competition for jobs was tough.

However, are things looking up? That figure is now at 16.7%, with 735,000 16-24 year-olds unemployed in January to March 2015, down slightly on the previous quarter and down 140,000 on the last year.

There are signs that the industry is recovering, which may bode well for current graduates. H&H reported earlier this year that the equestrian industry appeared to be emerging from the recession, with a rise in spending.

Results from the National Equestrian Survey run by the British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) showed that spending in 2014 was £4.3bn, up from £3.8bn when the previous survey was carried out in 2011. This compares to £4.15bn in 2006.

And according to the latest figures from equine colleges the future looks positive.

A recent survey of Royal Agricultural University (RAU) students who graduated in 2014 showed that 98.2% of respondents were in full employment or further study within six months of leaving the university.

RAU vice-principal, Professor Paul Davies, said: “We are very encouraged by this latest survey. Student employment has been high for very many years at the RAU — but the figures this year are particularly pleasing. Employers clearly find RAU graduates attractive, and long may this jobs record for Cirencester continue.”

Employability is one of “the key factors we are asked about by prospective students”, said Jessica Taylor, the RAU’s head of marketing and student recruitment.

The university’s most popular equine degree is international equine and agricultural business management, which includes a five-month work placement and field trips to equestrian businesses in Kentucky, Germany and France.

This summer the RAU has a record number of equine students graduating, and the hike in fees has not deterred applicants.

“Overall our undergraduate courses, which include equine, have recorded a 9% increase in applications this year,” added Ms Taylor.

This compares to an increase of 3% in the number of applications made to UCAS overall.

Olympic boom continues

“London 2012 really shone a light on our industry and the opportunities available, and this has translated into more applications for both our diploma and degree equine courses,” said Rosie Scott Ward, director of equine at Hartpury.

The RAU has expanded its equine department and told H&H it has received increased applications.

And the post-Olympic rise in the number of students studying equine courses has continued at Moulton College in Northampton.

Student numbers at the college, which runs a range of courses from equine therapy to performance and coaching at its jumping and dressage academies, have increased by 18% since the London

2012 Games.

“Our most popular courses are undoubtedly within our jumping academy, particularly our Level 3 extended diploma. This is closely followed by our range of equine rehabilitation and therapy courses,” said Moulton’s press officer.

Half of Moulton’s Level 3 students go on to a university-level course; the remaining 50% go into employment, over half of whom — 30% of all Moulton’s students — enter the equine industry.

“Moulton College equine students study a variety of courses that allow them to enhance their employability skills. Students have the opportunity to undertake 300 hours of work experience and can develop their skills — on which they are assessed and graded — at our state-of-the-art commercial equine therapy centre. This, coupled with their academic studies, helps to prepare students for the world of work,” said Craig Jackson, assistant director of curriculum at Moulton College.

Moulton currently has 136 equine students, of whom 95 are on further education courses and 41 are in higher education studies.

Applications up for 2015

At Hartpury College the most popular equine courses starting in September 2015 are business and technology council (BTEC) diplomas in horse management (Levels 2 and 3) and degree courses in equine business management, equine science and management, equine science and equestrian sports science.

The college currently has 162 students enrolled on equine programmes at college level, and 327 on equine programmes at degree level. Applications for September 2015 courses are up 10% compared with the same time last year.

This September the college is running a new course in equestrian sports coaching, which is proving popular. Also new is an integrated masters in equine science enabling students to get finance for a four-year masters course.

A new rider performance centre is also opening this September, to give equestrian students more opportunities to apply the theory learnt in a classroom in a practical setting.

Rosie Scott-Ward, of Hartpury added: “There is an increasing recognition within the equine industry and by prospective students that studying for an equine programme alongside gaining practical and work experience is the ideal preparation for a good career.”

More than 70% of Hartpury’s equine business management graduates “are in professional or managerial positions within six months of graduating”, she added.

Eloise Caisley worked for four years as an apprentice saddler at Colne Saddlery after graduating from the BA (Hons) equine business management course at Hartpury in 2010.

“I carried out my work placement at Colne Saddlery and used my experience there as a basis for my third-year dissertation, which focused on updating a business,” she said.

Last June she set up her own bespoke leather goods company after winning a Queen Elizabeth Scholarship.

“Having now started my own business, everything I studied on the business management side has come flooding back,” she said.

Judging by the success of the current crop of equine students, the mortarboards will be flying high this summer as more students celebrate moving from education into employment.

Ellen Svennerstal has been appointed as sales and marketing assistant at Keyflow Feeds.

The 22-year-old event rider competes at three-star with her horse, Southway, and has represented Sweden on several occasions.

Keyflow’s Cam Price said: “We are really excited to have Ellen on the team. The combination of business training and practical equestrian knowledge and experience will be hugely valuable to Keyflow.”

Nigel Laughton is the new chief executive for Pentathlon GB.

Nigel has 17 years’ experience working in elite sport and joins the organisation in November.

He comes to Pentathlon GB after three years as performance director of British Skeleton.

“I am honoured to have been offered this incredible opportunity in the lead-up to Rio 2016 and beyond,” said Nigel.

The Society of Master Saddlers has a new president — Peter Wilkes.

Well-known throughout the industry as head of Vale Brothers, Peter is passionate about excellence in saddlery craftsmanship, saddle fitting and the development and progress of the industry as a whole.

Peter takes over from Helen Dart, with Laura Dempsey moving into the vice president role.

“It is important that we never let go of our traditional craftsmanship while also adopting and looking into new manufacturing processes,” he said.

“I am starting my term feeling confident that consumers are buying again and it looks set to be a very positive time for all involved.”

Norbrook Laboratories has appointed Mark Brady as national sales manager for trade in Britain.

With more than 20 years’ experience in the animal health industry, he was most recently with Pfizer, which is now Zoetis.

Norbrook is a British veterinary pharmaceutical company set up in 1968 by the late Lord Ballyedmond.

Rory MacDonald has officially retired from his position as chief executive of the British Racing School in Newmarket after 22 years.

He has been succeeded by Grant Harris.

Grant Harris has previously worked for the National Trainers’ Federation, the British Horseracing Board and Weatherbys.

“I am honoured and proud to have been given the opportunity to carry on the great work Rory and the BRS team have achieved over the past 20 years that has led to the School’s reputation as a world-class training provider,” he said.

“We will strive to continue to improve the quality of training and trainees for the industry in this country and wider afield.”

Champion Chase-winning is jockey Jamie Moore the new “jumps ambassador” for the London region of Jockey Club Racecourses.

“It is a pleasure to be working with Sandown Park and Kempton Park racecourses as their ambassador for the coming season,” he said.

“They are two tracks that I enjoy riding at and I have been lucky enough to have had some great successes at both, so I feel honoured to have been asked to take on this role.”

Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre’s board of Trustees has announced a management restructure which will see the new role of chief executive created at the charity.

The current roles of operations director and fund raiser will be replaced with the chief executive and an executive assistant.

“This is a time of great opportunity and change for the TRC as we move into the next three-year strategic plan,” said chairman of Trustees, Brian Acott.

There have been a number of staff changes at Cumbria-based equestrian lick manufacturer, Horslyx.

Horslyx product and sales manager, Gillian Neill, is now on maternity leave and Nick Mackley, who recently joined the team as UK north sales manager, will be covering.

Becky Brennan has now been appointed as UK north sales manager.

Longstanding Horslyx team member, Anita Watson, will be leaving the company this autumn and Jonathan Bagg has been appointed as export manager.

Dengie has employed a new thoroughbred specialist and sales manager for Ireland.

Former National Hunt jockey Padge Whelan is joining the company and has has extentsive experience of the thoroughbred sector, thanks to a successful racing career that saw him ride more than 120 winners.

Dengie national sales manager Chris Allen said: “We are pleased to welcome Padge to the team. We are confident that, with his high level of knowledge, enthusiasm and drive, he will be a tremendous asset to the Dengie brand as he works to develop our potential in Ireland.”

The Pony Club’s chief executive Judy Edwards will be stepping down next March.

During her ten-year tenure she has raised the profile of the Pony Club, established an in-house IT, press and marketing department and instigated the office move to new premises.

She said she “felt enormously privileged” to have held office for so long and “to have been so well supported by the team at Stoneleigh, the members of the Pony Club equestrian council and the committees and the myriad of volunteers who make the Pony Club what it is.”

There have been “many challenges and changes” but when she finally says farewell “it will be with the knowledge that I will be handing over the charity in good shape to serve future generations of young riders,” she added.

Judy Edwards is an FEI showjumping judge, and had a competitive careeer before creating Coppice Acres Show Jumping Arena at her Warwickshire home.

Her successor is expected to be in place by the end of the year to allow for a handover period.

London firm the Inzito Partnership has been appointed to find Judy’s replacement.

“We are keen to secure an appointment for this important position, which has a new job specification as part of our strategic review outcomes” said Pony Club chairman Mary Tuckett.

“The Pony Club is currently in an exciting period of change and development, and the new appointment is part of that ongoing process. We have appointed Inzito for their expertise, both within the equestrian industry and also the wider sporting and business community.”

Stubbing Court Training’s apprentice of the year is 19-year-old Kirsty Buchanan from Stirling.

She was judged the winner by showjumper Matthew Sampson at Parklands Equestrian Centre on 11 July.

Miss Buchanan completed her 15-month apprenticeship at event riders, Mark and Tanya Kyle’s Leicestershire yard.

“I feel the apprenticeship has really widened my knowledge of the equestrian industry, as well as giving me the chance to see how a top-level competition yard is run,” she said.

Miss Buchanan won an embroidered Ariat jacket donated by Thomas Irving Equestrian Superstore, and three days’ work experience with Matthew Sampson.

A new equine dentistry foundation degree course is being run at Plumpton College, East Sussex.

The four-year part-time course allows students to spend two years working in the equine industry, alongside a registered dental technician.

The course has modules in equine cranial anatomy and physiology, and students will research an area within equine dentistry for the final project.

Students will finish with the skills needed to take the professional British Association of Equine Dental Technicians (BAEDT) qualification.

Tuition fees are £3,450 per annum.

The successful candidate will work with the Digital Editorial Manager to schedule social media and online content — overseeing the day-to-day running of the website.

Other responsibilities include producing regular newsletters, ensuring information on the site remains accurate, and covering for the Digital Editorial Manager in their absence. You will also have the opportunity to work on magazine pages.

Excellent subbing skills and knowledge of CMS, SEO and analytics are required for this role. You must also have the ability to prioritise, be flexible and communicate effectively with the team, as well as understanding the brand’s market and being a keen equestrian.

Junior Digital Sub Editor

This role entails subbing and uploading SEO web content, ensuring accuracy and maximising outreach further by building links where appropriate. Job responsibilities vary from writing witty or engaging captions for web galleries to compiling regular newsletters, circulating web stats and being a point of contact for website enquiries. You will also assist with sub editing of print pages when possible.

Searching for newly employed graduates in the equine sector, it soon becomes clear that there are far more people trying to kick-start their careers than those happily settled in secure positions. Which begs the question: are equine jobseekers struggling?

With hundreds of new equine studies graduates every year, is our recession-afflicted industry running out of positions to cater for them?

Hannah Wild set up Supplement Solutions, an online outlet, 10 years ago and often employs graduates.

“As an equine degree holder myself, I understand the difficulties,” says Hannah. “I ended up working as an equine groom for a year after I graduated, followed by a series of office jobs, before setting up my own equine business 5 years later.”

Hannah believes graduates need to be realistic about their salary expectations in the equestrian industry, too.

“Many new equine graduates expect a starting salary of £20k or a salary in line with other graduates, but the equine industry is not a place to earn high wages,” she explains. “The hard part is getting your foot in the door. You may have to accept a lower salary to start with, especially as most graduates are happy just to get a job in the industry.”

Are colleges failing their students?

So how do you go about getting that vital foot on the ladder?

“Colleges need to prepare graduates much more for the industry, with mock interviews, helping with applications and bringing industry speakers in,” Hannah believes. “If they worked more to find out what employers were looking for, the system would be much better.

“Students also need to be realistic and maybe think twice about graduating with yet another equine degree.”

Peter Morris, equine development director at the Royal Agricultural University (RAU), believes it isn’t all doom and gloom. But he does stress the importance of gaining work experience, saying it is absolutely essential.

“The RAU runs a successful 20-week work placement scheme,” he says. “It’s clear there is still a lot of goodwill in the UK and global equine industries to help people seeking jobs to get a foot on the career ladder.

“Finding a way to gain experience is key to getting the right job; thereby acquiring not only particular industry skills but good interpersonal skills.

“It all starts with relevant research into the particular job area, a well-written CV and initial contact and a positive and persistent approach.”

Tips for applications and interviews

➤ Follow instructions — if the advert says post your CV and covering letter to a given name and address, do exactly that.

➤ Always include your full contact details.

➤ Adjust the covering letter to suit the particular role.

➤ Use common sense, show initiative and don’t be shy.

➤ Find out more about the role before you apply.

➤ Learn about the company before your interview.

➤ Be prepared for the interview and be yourself. Be honest, too — if you decide it’s not for you, say so.

➤ Make an effort with your appearance, be on time for interviews and show you are interested.

➤ Be confident about yourself and show what you could bring to the company.

➤ Work out the logistics of travel and/or accommodation if you were to be offered the position.

➤ Be realistic about salary and wages. The equine industry is not particularly well paid.

With Britain in a double dip recession, times are tough, and the equestrian industry is no exception.

According to UK poverty statistics, the unemployment rate for 16- to 24-year-olds has increased noticeably in recent years — rising from 15% in 2008 to 20% in 2010. And two-fifths of those who are unemployed are under 25 — with more men than women out of work.

Competition for jobs is rife — there can be up to 100 applications for one role as recent graduates, mature students and newly redundant professionals all fight for positions.

Follow our tips for success:

• Read the job description and be clear on what type of contract is on offer, temporary or permanent, full- or part-time. Don’t be afraid to ask questions
• Be clear on any commission, pay or bonus schemes. Understand targets and employer expectations
• Clarify the use of any company car and mobile phone
• Clarify holiday entitlement, or paid holiday and time in lieu if working away or at the weekend
• For employment rights seek specialist advice. Your local Citizens Advice Bureau is a good place to start
• Have a good CV — make sure your spelling and grammar are spot on and that the content of your CV specifically targets the job you’re applying for
• You can never have too much work experience — volunteer wherever you can
• Attend events, courses and lectures to gain knowledge and contacts
• Be flexible — you might have to move for your perfect job

Equestrian employees from Battle, Hayward & Bower and Brendon Horse & Rider were recognised at the British Equestrian Trade Association awards last week (19 February).

Stephen Neale from Battle, Hayward & Bower in Lincoln was named the Equine Careers sales representative of the year.

The award recognises “excellence in product knowledge and service to retail customers”.

Nominations were received from retailers, followed by an interview with the finalists.

One of Stephen’s nominators said: “He’s a terrific ambassador for his company. If it can be done, it will be done.”

A judge added: “Out of all the calls we made, this one was one of the most professionally handled.”

Runner-up was Jonathan Canty of Natural Animal Feeds in Monmouth.

The Harry Hall retail employee of the year went to Caraleen Light, Brendon Horse & Rider in Brighton, where she’s worked for five years.

This award is given to the retail employee showing initiative, excellence in customer service, good product knowledge and a commitment to retailing.

“Caraleen deals with riders in a professional manner and she has extensive product knowledge,” said a nominator.

The independent judge added: “If I were looking for a member of staff, I would be very happy if she was selling for me.”

The Hendelah Waley Equestrian Fund is accepting applications for training grants from people committed to making a career with horses.

The fund was set up 30 years ago by Ann and Simon Waley after their daughter Hendelah was tragically killed in an accident, aged 17.

Funds of £2,000 will be divided between three or four recipients, and can be used to pay for lessons with a professional or to contribute towards BHS examinations.

The Waleys are looking for people aged 18 or over with exceptional motivation, attitude and aspiration, rather than specific riding talent, who would like to go into teaching, horse welfare or other equestrian careers.

Applicants will undergo assessment at a riding day near Reigate, Surrey on 14 November.

An international equine recruitment website has now launched in the UK.

Equus Connect International is for employers and job seekers in all areas of the equestrian industry, and aims to provide a platform for them to communicate directly with each other.

As the Australian site was attracting users from further afield, directors Bill Williams, a former Australian jockey, and Gary Waters, an equine dental technician, decided to expand into the UK, Europe and Middle East.

The company is keen that it is seen as being “run by horse people for horse people”.

Tina Dawson, who will be managing the venture, said: “Equestrianism is big business and has a significant resource need, our website simplifies the recruitment process for employers and eases the job seeking process for those wishing to work within the equine industry.”

For an introductory period Equus Connect will be free to users.
