The family of a young rider who died last year have set up a trust in his memory to help others “achieve their Everest”.

George Crawford (pictured, below), 20, passed away in October after he was hit by a car while walking back to his university halls at Harper Adams.

The Crawford family has founded the George Crawford Legacy Trust, which is supporting many causes including the Riding for the Disabled Association and the Injured Jockeys Fund.

George’s father, Cameron Crawford, told H&H they want it to help individuals, as well as recognised charities, with bursaries for those who need help to achieve their passion — whether that is music, sport, art or riding.

“That is the type of person George was, always helping out,” said Mr Crawford. “We wanted to reflect this and along with supporting recognised charities, we want to help individuals get to their Everest.

“We want this to be a lasting legacy that will hopefully be there for years to come.”

The trust has already bought a pony for its local RDA group with the proceeds raised so far.

Fundraisers planned for this year include a cycle from the family’s farm in the Scottish borders to Harper Adams on 2 to 5 June, plus a gala at the end of the season.

George’s horse Cryptonite is also on course to make his Badminton debut in May with fellow first-timer Emily Parker and will be running in the livery of the trust, which will be printed on her eye-catching cross-country colours.

Mr Crawford said they are hoping to bring some other riders on board to help raise the trust’s profile.

Bought out of a field in Ireland via Greg Kinsella, the horse was initially evented by Cameron, with the plan that George would take over the reins.

But after a fall at Belsay in 2015, the ride went to Emily who has taken him up through the levels over the past four years.

“He is not your classic looking event horse — he makes Ben Hobday’s Harelaw Wizard [a 16.3hh part-bred Clydesdale] look small,” said Cameron.

“He is a dude, all he wants to do is please you and he doesn’t understand the word ‘no’.”

Emily and Cryptonite finished second at Ballindenisk CCI3* (now CCI4*-L) in September and are heading to Belton this weekend following a good opening run for the season in the advanced intermediate at Lincoln (15 March).

Hazel Towers achieved a CCI3* victory on her first attempt at the level today at the Blair Castle Equi-Trek International Horse Trials, confirming her win with one showjump down.

None of the seven remaining in this class showjumped clear, but Hazel and Simply Smart’s four faults at the first part of the treble at fence 10 left them four penalties clear of runner-up Louise Harwood (Balladeer Miller Man).

“Winning this class means everything – all the hard work has paid off,” said Hazel.

Louise had fence eight down and three time-faults, but held second. Alice Dunsdon and Sambo III dropped a rank to fourth with eight faults, while last year’s CCI2* winners Caroline Clarke and Touch Too Much pulled up one spot to third when just 10c fell for them.

CCI2*

Australia’s Shane Rose scored his second win of the afternoon after taking the Event Rider Masters when he showjumped clear to overhaul Emily King in the CCI2*.

Shane’s ride was Gurtera Cher, who he has been riding instead of the injured Sam Griffiths.

“I’m excited for her future with Sam as I think she’s a proper four-star horse for him and you can never have enough of them,” he said.

Emily and Walitze F Vejgard just hit the wavy planks at fence four to drop to second.

Oliver Townend jumped out of order on Tregilder, who was seventh overnight, and ended up finishing third on him, while his fourth-placed ride Khoi Traveler dropped to seventh with two down.

“I couldn’t be happier with him,” said Oliver of seven-year-old Tregilder, who he has ridden since he was four.

CCI*

Emily Parker jumped clear to win the CCI* with David Mactaggart’s Highly Delighted. She was second overnight, but moved up when overnight leader Carlos Parro took the back rail off the oxer at fence three to drop to third with Sir Digby.

“He wasn’t enjoying the sticky ground outside, so I wasn’t that confident, but he jumped as well as he could have on the conditions,” said Emily.

US rider Elisabeth Halliday-Sharp was also fault-free to move up from sixth to second on Gorsehill Cooley.

“He’s for sale now and you couldn’t ask for a more genuine jumper,” said Elisabeth.

Three members of the British team have been selected for the final leg of the eventing Nations Cup series.

Britain is currently in the lead ahead of the last stage of the competition series, which takes place at Military Boekelo-Enschede in the Netherlands (8-11 October).

British Nations Cup team manager Philip Surl has confirmed that the team will include Dani Evans with Luana Edge’s Smart Time, Izzy Taylor with KBIS Starburst and Emily Parker with Cindy Onslow’s Diamond Sundance.

A fourth rider will be announced when all horses registered to compete for Britain have arrived at the competition.

“We are in a strong position going into final leg of the cup with both Dani and Izzy who are experienced members of the Nations Cup squad,” said Mr Surl.

“I am really pleased to give Emily Parker, who is a former GB young rider gold medal winner, the opportunity to ride on the team following her very consistent form across the board this year.”

The British team has been at the top of the Nations Cup leader board for much of the season. They have had wins at Ballindenisk and Strzegom as well as high placings throughout the year giving them a lead of 49 points.

Germany stand in second place with 40 points and Australia are in third with 35.

Britannia League

The results from Boekelo will also be the decider of this year’s Britannia League winner.

The league is for riders competing at British three-star competitions as well as the Nations Cup, who have not ridden under the British flag at Olympic, FEI European or World Equestrian Games.

The league was launched by British Eventing (BE) last year and the 2014 winner was Jodie Amos.

Hello everyone,

Well, this is not quite the news I was hoping to impart this evening after cross-country at the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials, however we are both alive and will live to fight another day.

After a solitary course walk this morning, I was eventually beginning to picture myself jumping round. I stomached breakfast and then headed to watch the first few jump on the screens at the start – the yawning had begun (classic nervous sign)!

I managed to break the zip on my boots before I got on – good start – then headed to the warm up. To say Trev (Treefers) was a tad fresh is an understatement. I nearly fell off as he darted sideways from an abnormal blade of grass – but he was jumping out of his skin and filled me with confidence.

The walk down to the cross-country start was daunting but after a quick pep talk from Caroline Moore and Ian Stark I was well up for it… unfortunately so was Trevor – a little too much! He stormed out of the start box and breezed the first few, leapt off the Leaf Pit Classic drop and just continued to gallop, not even noticing my attempts at steering to the fence. Bugger.

Once I eventually stopped and jumped the alternative we cracked on – one silly missing of a fence was not going to deter us. However, the next time I needed to turn left, at Discovery Valley, Trevor had very different ideas and continued to canter along ignoring me yet again. Really bugger.

After this I decided I really wasn’t strong enough to try and haul him around the course and called it a day. We got nannyed back through the crowds by a kind gentleman from the Blankney hunt and crept sheepishly into the stables.

Certainly not the fairytale description I’d have loved to have given of the course, but we’re certainly not down and out – already planning where to take my racehorse next.

I’m obviously devastated to have let everyone down who has supported me this far, however I am determined to make up for it in the near future! Lynny Babes tells me Trev has been squealing and leaping around while grazing this evening – definitely needs a good gallop. Maybe I’ll sneak round later!

I’m staying tonight to drown sorrows then watch everyone showjump tomorrow before heading back up north, so I will blog tomorrow as spectator rather than competitor (boo) but it is still such a privilege to be here.

Hopefully my next blog will make some sense after tonight, could be entertaining if not…

Hi everyone,

I haven’t quite lived up to expectations again I’m afraid… sunshine is to blame for making me late this time… excuses are getting silly now!

I was feeling just a tad hungover and still eating my breakfast as groom Lynny legged me on to Trev (Treefers). Willa Newton and I set off hacking, very smug that we didn’t have to think about circles! I only span round once and didn’t even feel the need to hold the neck strap – a very tame hack.

Ian the dog, Livvy (Olivia Wilmot) and I had walked the course twice yesterday – so we set off on trip three this morning… it is perhaps getting marginally better every time I go, although I’d have to walk it a thousand times before I was saying it looks a piece of cake!

Minute markers were sussed out, direct routes planned, what to do if it went tits up anywhere sorted and I was still struggling to believe I’m actually jumping round it tomorrow! I’ve tried never to be a superstitious person, however, I have been dragged into one stupid ritual by my Scottish friend… we must walk through the start and finish every time we walk the course – sounds easy, but not when these are located in Ring 2, holding the Pony Club showjumping yesterday and young event horse classes today! This didn’t stop us strolling in the arena and running round the flags – I hope it is worth it.

Next up was an interview with BBC Radio Lincolnshire, I was kindly chauffeur driven through the main tradestand area to the press tent (I could get used to that). Luckily it wasn’t live as I did struggle with a bit of sandwich stuck in my throat – but other than that I don’t think I embarrassed myself or anyone else too much.

I had the quickest browse through the shops and only bought a JCB digger and haulage truck – don’t ask – then headed back to meet Caroline Moore who had just arrived, to go on yet another course walk. We took it leisurely, but eventually made our way round without Caroline getting too excited about being here.

The Scottish party appeared with enough alcohol to last a week, I’m not sure if that’s to drown my sorrows or celebrate – fingers crossed for the latter please everyone!

Lynny Babes has been amazing grazing the wee man all day and having him ready to go down a catwalk even when I go out hacking – however I also have to mention Mother Malcom whom I have borrowed the Babes from, plus whose hospitality is far superior to a five-star hotel and who has a laugh I can rely on to calm me down when I start thinking too much about the cross-country! Grandpa and brother Ben have also arrived tonight so I nearly have enough people for each fence on the course, nice.

I’m very late (as always) for supper chez Malcom so I had better stop waffling and get over there. Jump high and go fast vibes from every one tomorrow please, big Trev is ready to kick on!

Hello everyone,

I’m afraid today’s Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials first-timer blog is going to have to be a shorter version of my normal rambling (this might suit most of you) as I am currently on my way to the cocktail party and Event Riders’ Association supper! Do not fear though, as tomorrow is a “day off” so I will blabber twice as much.

Big Trev (Treefers) did not disappoint in the dressage… lying in 4th place at the end of the day…what! Still a long way to go, but I shall be living off this at least for the evening – he was a complete legend, only adding in one extra move – much to the crowd’s shock gasping as he leapt across the arena. I fluffed 3 out of 4 flying changes, but one is certainly better than none!

I couldn’t be prouder of my wee pony, I’ve walked the cross-country course twice today and am trying to explain the course to the big man so he can ponder over it tomorrow!

Huge thanks to my family, friends, super groom, the big dog (Ian) and anyone else who has got me this far – this is nuts!

Sorry for being rubbish, I will be more organised with my time tomorrow!

Ruth Edge tops the leader board at the end of the first day of dressage at the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials.

Ruth rode Susan Kerfoot’s home-bred 10-year-old Rogersdale with her customary professionalism and polish to pick up every possible mark, just losing points in the flying changes. She scored 45.5.

“I’m really pleased,” she said. “It was a shame he got a bit tired towards the end and couldn’t keep it together for the flying changes, but with strength and maturity that will change. He has a lovely rhythm and cadence, which makes my job easier.

“He’s a really kind horse, very genuine and generous. He’s easy to prepare and I trust him not to get lit up in the atmosphere. He doesn’t take long to warm-up, which makes my trainer Judy Harvey’s job easy too.”

The Welton Ambassador gelding was seventh in the CCI*** at Tattersalls in June and makes his four-star debut here.

Jock Paget is just 0.7 of a penalty behind on Lucy Allison and Frances Stead’s Clifton Lush, fifth here last year.

The horse was prepared for London as a reserve to Jock’s team bronze medallist Clifton Promise and has been kept ticking over by his stable jockey Hollie Swain and dressage rider Andrew Gould while Jock was away in New Zealand for the Olympic celebrations.

“I’m really happy with him today – he did what I thought was his best test yet,” said Jock.

Six-times Burghley winner William Fox-Pitt lies third on 46.5 with Catherine Witt’s Seacookie, who was second here in 2010 but was off for most of last year with an injury.

“We got him ready for Badminton in the spring, then when it was cancelled we decided not to take him to Luhm ¼hlen in view of having an autumn campaign,” said William.

“He’s managed to have some runs [despite the bad weather] and is in a good frame of mind. He was very controlled in the dressage and wasn’t spooky. That was probably the most settled he’s been.”

William said that the early part of Mark Phillips’ cross-country course from Discovery Valley (fences 6 and 7) to the Land Rover Dairy Farm (fence 19) is particularly testing.

“Once you’ve jumped the Dairy Farm there is a little less to think about apart from how your horse is feeling and how he’s going to come home [in terms of whether he is tiring],” said William.

“I think the cross-country will be demanding. The ground is superb at present, but it could get a bit soft.”

Today at Burghley was punctuated by sporadic rain showers, including a heavy one during the lunchbreak.

First-timer Emily Parker – who is keeping a daily diary from Burghley on the H&H website – excelled herself today to take fourth place on her former young rider European champion Treefers.

Another pair who have won individual young rider gold, Emily Llewellyn and Pardon Me II, are sixth, while Oliver Townend is fifth on ODT Sonas Rovatio.

The dressage kicks off again at 9.30am tomorrow with stars scattered throughout the day.

Hi everyone,

I’m already regretting my promise at the end of the last blog to be “more exciting” next time… thank you to the kind friend who pointed this out, however I shall give it a shot!

After a quick stop at Wetherby services (classy) for Trev (Treefers) and I to be interviewed by Look North, we arrived at the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials and settled into stable number 30.

We collected our wristbands and various other exciting gift bags – including the famous black Burghley cross-country numbers (which set my stomach churning!) and our plaque to say we’ve arrived… even if I fall at the first they can’t take that away!

I set off for a hack in glorious evening sunshine, leaving my father squeezing the lorry into a space just big enough for a mini cooper and my mother telling him off for doing so. My sense of direction isn’t renowned for being top notch, so when I came across an enormous cross-country fence on my travels I did begin to panic – however, a horseshoe sign reassured me I was heading the right way.

I trundled past Burghley House and along to the main arena (still cannot quite believe I can say that) while Trev squeaked and I clung to my neck strap – trying not to pay too much attention to the enormity of it all.

Once we’d managed to partly calm ourselves down, Trev retired to his stable for the evening while I helped organise the lorry and caught up with fellow Burghley virgin Willa Newton. We made plans to hack in the morning holding hands so neither of us could do any wrong / have a mini breakdown.

Hack was successful – phew – Chip (Neelix) and Trev talked man things, they’ve missed each other. Willa and I managed to only go off course a handful of times, caught up on life and turned into tourists marvelling at the beautiful setting – trying to take pictures on fresh ponies is certainly not big or clever so unfortunately crazy photos will have to do until I’m on two feet.

The rider briefing was the next thing to make me feel rather out of my depth… the imminent arrival of my groom/nanny/legend of the week Lynn Cree (Lynny Babes) couldn’t come soon enough!

So now I’m sitting in Big Trev’s stable watching Lynny Babes work her magic (yes, I am very spoilt) while the rain batters down – making me regret my decision to wear suede boots and a dress to the trot-up… I knew I went to Scotland for a reason – to acclimatise myself to this delightful weather.

Hopefully next time I’m writing Trev and I will have swanned through the trot-up without embarrassing ourselves, our training from Ian Stark will have been foot perfect with minimal shouting on his part and whimpering on mine, the arena walk will produce a calm mannerly Trevor, I’ll have behaved at the BBQ and we will be ready to do the dressage test of our lives… Seeing is believing!

We were perhaps marginally more exciting this time… no doubt I will soon find out from said “friend”!

Hello everyone,

I’m currently driving down the A1 on our 6hr journey from the Scottish Borders to what should be a reasonably local event to me — the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials.

I’ve kindly been given the chance to keep you all updated throughout the week on mine and my steed, Treefers, first ever Burghley… and first ever four star event. So I will begin today by giving you the boring background details before we start getting excited about the actual event!

I’m Emily Parker, 22, and come from Lincolnshire (home of the big B). I’ve been riding since I could hold myself upright and got my first pony aged 7. Coming from a reasonably non-horsey background I went to a riding school, then got into the Burton Hunt pony club, managing to make the ponies well and truly my family’s hobby! My parents, Chris and Sonia, encouraged this ‘hobby’ at the time — my father probably hoping it would keep my away from boys and on the straight and narrow — little did they know it would still be costing them 15years on…

I had a fab time in pony club doing everything from Prince Philip Cup to qualifying for the championships in eventing, showjumping and dressage — it’s what got me hooked on eventing so I’m forever grateful for that.

I progressed to British Eventing, with the help of my event coach and now owner of two horses I ride, Caroline Moore. Caroline’s constant guidance has been paramount in my on-going transformation from pony clubber to ‘professional eventer’.

Her help led to a place on the Midlands and North East JRN team and then my first call up to represent Great Britain at the Young Rider European championships in 2009 with Treefers, where we won team gold.

The following year (2010) was a fairy tale as we won both team and individual gold, giving us the chance to interview for the World Class programme and I’ve now enjoyed two years of amazing support from it.

In 2011 I graduated from Nottingham Trent university with a degree in Real Estate management. Then after a dunking in the water at Boekelo, and a panicked phone call to Sarah Verney (my World Class co-ordinator), I packed my bags, took two horses and trucked up to the Scottish Borders where Ian Stark’s yard was awaiting me.

I had been warned that I probably wouldn’t cope with the hard work and harsh weather (the snow was worse down south — fact) but I had the most amazing time: hunting with the Buccleugh — clinging for dear life on feral ponies; jumping expensive horses over hugely dangerous obstacles on hills; and most importantly learning from one of the best in the world.

Unfortunately for Ian and everyone at Haughead, my new found love of the place and the people has led to me going back for stints with ever-increasing numbers of horses (five this time). So this is where Treefers and I have been preparing for our biggest event to date.

On to Treefers, Trevor, big Trev, Trev the Rev or various other expletives when he is standing waving at us on his back legs. He was bought as a 6yo (now 12) 16hh on his tippy toes, having done a bit of showjumping and one cross-country schooling session, to be my top pony club eventer. Mother was not too keen on buying a horse who I tried with my legs as far away from his sides as I could manage to prevent him exploding across the arena — but she was eventually persuaded.

Trev has done much more than I could have ever comprehended, especially as, being the rather opinionated pony he can be, he likes to show the world his tummy on rather important occasions… including both European dressage tests — naughty boy. However he has won me three gold medals, a place on the World Class programme, the chance to go up and work for Ian Stark, and now a crack at our first four star — I wouldn’t change him for the world.

So now we have nearly arrived — I will have to learn to type quicker and be less easily distracted throughout the week… Hmmm, sounds tricky. I hope I haven’t bored anyone to tears yet, or if so I promise it will be more exciting tomorrow as I will have arrived and the nerves will have started kicking in big time!

Britain has won team gold at the young rider eventing European Championships for the sixth year in a row.

This year’s squad clinched victory at Pardubice in the Czech Republic in a tight final showjumping phase yesterday. They well went clear across country on Saturday to take the lead from the Germans, who held top spot after dressage.

Emily Parker went clear on Treefers to hold her overnight lead and become young rider European champion.

This is also the third year in a row Britain has fielded the individual gold medallist and in the team contest this time Emily was ably backed up by the two riders who took that title in 2008 and 2009, Emily Llewellyn and Laura Collett.

Emily, riding Society Spice, and Laura, riding Fernhill Cristal, each had one showjump down yesterday to finish fifth and eighth and provide the other two counting scores for the British team.

Britain finished just 0.1pen ahead of Germany and there was briefly some confusion about who had actually won, before the British riders were given the gold medals.

All the Brits finished in the top 15 individually, with fourth team member Tom McEwen (Major Sweep) 14th and individuals Willa Newton (Neexlix) and Rosie Fry (Bankon Louie) sixth and 15th.

Chairman of selectors Alex Colquhoun said: “You couldn’t ask for a better result for a nicer group of riders. They have all been fantastic throughout the championships and have shown real maturity. I would also like to thank all the parents and sponsors who have been so supportive.”

Britain lies in the silver medal position after the dressage at the eventing young rider European Championships at Parubice in the Czech Republic.

The British quartet’s combined scores put them just 0.18pen behind Sweden and 2.4pen ahead of Germany, so tomorrow’s cross-country promises to be exciting with every time-fault being influential.

Emily Parker (pictured) — a team gold medallist last year — is best of the Brits in second individually with Treefers, while fellow team member Emily Llewellyn is seventh with Society Spice.

Laura Collett (12th with Fernhill Cristal) and Tom McEwen (15th with Major Sweep) are the other two team members.

Britain’s individuals are Willa Newton, ninth with Neexlix, and Rosie Fry, 14th with Bankon Louie.

France’s Nicolas Astier holds the lead on Jhakti Du Janlie, with whom he won the individual silver last year at the young rider Europeans.
