The Queen said she “hopes Badminton Horse Trials goes on for ever” as she visited today (8 May) in her role as patron of Ebony Horse Club.

Ebony is Mars Badminton’s charity of the year; riders from the stables based in Brixton, London, put on a display for Her Majesty in the main arena today.

The Queen first became aware of Ebony, which enables young riders from disadvantaged backgrounds to be with horses and potentially train for careers, some years ago at a meeting in Brixton when the club did not have premises.

“I was so moved and humbled by the whole thing, I felt now was the time to get it going with a riding school,” she said. “I can hardly believe now that there it is. I remember it as a patch of ground with nothing on it, and now all these ponies, these wonderful riders doing a fantastic job.

“Huge thanks to all the volunteers who come in and help because it wouldn’t happen otherwise, and it’s given all these children the most fantastic chance to get on in life. I’m so thrilled to be a patron.”

The club’s chief executive Sid Holdsworth said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for our brilliantly talented young people, who were so excited to ride for The Queen. Thanks to our fantastic group of volunteers, the team at Badminton and The Queen, we have all had a fantastic day.”

Theo Dorton, one of the four riders who performed the demo, said all of them were “beyond thrilled”.

“To have taken part in this, something so big, I never thought I would be part of,” he said.

“Thank you to Ebony for having me and giving me the opportunity to perform at Badminton. It has been amazing and I just can’t wait to do more.”

The Queen, who arrived at Badminton Horse Trials just as defending champions Ros Canter and Lordships Graffalo were performing the test that took them into the lead, said she has been going to the event for years.

“Always on my feet, but I never cease to be impressed by all the wonderful riders here,” she said. “It’s such fun, and I just hope it can go on for ever.”

The Queen will attend Mars Badminton Horse Trials on Friday (8 May) in her role as patron of the Ebony Horse Club, the event’s chosen charity this year.

The Ebony Horse Club, founded in 1996, is a community stables in Brixton, London, which aims to use horses to transform the lives of young people from disadvantaged communities. The charity offers training and career opportunities and cultivates life skills in its beneficiaries, giving them the responsibility of caring for an animal.

The charity’s stand at Badminton is at number 253 Beaufort Way, and the cross-country fence carrying its name, a double of gates on one stride called the Ebony Horse Club Gates, is number 5ab on the five-star cross-country course.

The day The Queen is visiting Badminton Horse Trials, Friday, is the second day of dressage.

As favourites and defending champions Ros Canter and Lordships Graffalo are currently set to be the 38th pair to start from a field of 65, pending final withdrawals (see the full list of remaining Badminton entries), it’s likely Ros will be one of the first into the dressage arena on this day – so The Queen will have to arrive promptly if she wants to catch what may well be the best dressage test of the day.

Following the withdrawal of second favourites Oliver Townend and Cooley Rosalent yesterday, data analytics experts EquiRatings give Ros and “Walter” a 38% win chance; Bubby Upton and her stalwart Cola are now second in the prediction centre with an 11% win chance.

A horse who is enjoying his retirement at Redwings Horse Sanctuary had a special visit from some of the children he has helped in the past.

Young people and staff from Ebony Horse Club, Brixton, visited their much-loved cob Harley, who moved to the charity’s Norfolk base in April.

“Harley helped hundreds of youngsters during four years at the club, which gives young people, largely from low-income backgrounds, the opportunity to interact with horses,” a Redings spokesperson said.

“The club contacted Redwings earlier this year after their efforts to find a suitable retirement home for Harley had failed. The 13-year-old has osteoarthritis in his hind fetlocks, meaning he can no longer work, and needs closely monitored care.”

Ebony’s chief operating officer Sidony Holdsworth said Harley was a favourite and much loved.

“We are very grateful that Redwings agreed to take Harley,” she said.

“It was so special for us to be able to come and see him. It means such a lot to all of us to see Harley looking so settled, well and happy with his new friends, living his best life for however much time he has.

“He’s a sweetheart of a horse, who has done so much for so many, and we know that he has the very best of everything at Redwings.”

The visitors had a guided tour of Redwings Aylsham, and met some other residents, including Maya, who is now a close friend of Harley’s.

Redwings’ Charlotte McMorran-Stock said: “It was so special to see the children and young people with Harley, and the other horses. I’ve worked at Redwings for six years and I don’t think I’ve seen such beautiful interactions between our residents and people.

“Harley clearly loved seeing his old friends and enjoyed lots of scritches and introducing them to his new pals.”

London International Horse Show reveals official charity

Ebony Horse Club is the London International Horse Show’s official charity for 2022 (15 to 19 December).

The charity, based in Brixton, south London, works with young people and its mission is to use horses to raise the education, life skills, wellbeing and aspirations of those from disadvantaged communities in Lambeth.

Ebony already has links with the show. In 2021, it hosted the London International Horse Show Riding Academy, which is an annual event and involves the show’s riders, organisers and associates sharing knowledge with the club’s members. Last year, Jack Whitaker gave a jumping lesson and Natasha Baker spoke about her journey to the top.

A total of 50p from every ticket sold for the Thursday afternoon performance will go directly to the charity, and the show will provide tickets for the club members and staff. The club will also be taking an active part in preparations for the show.

“We are extremely excited to be chosen as the London International Horse Show’s official charity this year,” said Ebony Horse Club admin and yard coordinator Christine Lewis.

“To be selected by such a prestigious event really speaks volumes to the reach of our message and it’s great to be recognised at such a high-profile occasion.

“We have worked with the London International Horse Show a few times in the past and our members absolutely love going to the show.”

She added the 2021 academy was “just amazing” and something members “still talk about now”.

“We cannot wait to be more involved this year. It’ll be a great platform to raise awareness about our work. It’s truly going to be a day to remember for all involved,” she said.

Club member Jasmine, 17, added: “The fact that the London International Horse Show has chosen Ebony as its 2022 charity is amazing [and] more young people will have the opportunity to experience the magic of Ebony.”

London International Horse Show director Simon Brooks-Ward said the show is “delighted to be able to support [Ebony] this year” and looks forward to working together in the build-up and at the event itself.

“Ebony Horse Club is a fantastic charity, enabling children from central London to be involved with horses, where they otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity,” he added.

Two charity partners for Blair Castle International Horse Trials

The Land Rover Blair Castle International Horse Trials (25 to 28 August) has named the British Eventing Support Trust and the Moredun Foundation Equine Grass Sickness Fund as its official charity partners for 2022.

The British Eventing Support Trust, which launched in September 2021, aims to support riders through injury and mental health struggles. The grass sickness fund is dedicated to supporting, improving treatment and advancing research into the disease.

Nicky Townshend, assistant director of Blair Castle Horse Trials, said: “Both of the charities we have chosen for this year’s event are hugely important to the equestrian world. Eventing is a high risk sport and, whilst everything is done to minimise the risk, to now have British Eventing Support Trust as a resource is fantastic.

“Grass sickness has long been a distressing illness for horse owners to deal with, and the work of the Equine Grass Sickness Fund is truly invaluable.

“We are delighted to support these causes and look forward to working together to raise funds and awareness for the charities.”

Clothing brand signs title deal for Coronation Cup

The Hurlingham Polo Association’s (HPA) clothing brand Hurlingham Polo 1875 has signed a headline sponsorship deal for the Coronation Cup at Guards Polo Club (23 July).

The partnership means the day will be titled the Hurlingham Polo 1875 International Day for the Coronation Cup.

HPA chief executive Anna Hall said Hurlingham 1875 is the “perfect match” for the day that will showcase “the full range that British polo has to offer”.

The deal involves providing team shirts for England and Uruguay, high-profile advertising and a presence at the event.

Hurlingham Polo 1875 chief executive Simon Hawkins added: “We are confident that working closely with the Hurlingham Polo Association will help raise awareness of, and participation in, the game of polo alongside the growth of the lifestyle brand. Through design, creativity and innovation, we will continue to position the sport of polo, and its British heritage, at the heart of everything we do. We will always be aligned to our core value of authenticity.”

New deals for Riding for the Disabled

Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) has revealed two new sponsorship deals.

Equine feed specialists Dodson & Horrell has pledged support for dressage classes at the RDA National Championships in a three-year deal. Pet insurance provider Agria is also supporting the championships and raising additional funds for the charity.

The 2022 championships are underway at Hartpury this week (15 to 17 July).

RDA interim chief executive Paul Ringer said: “Dressage at our RDA National Championships is a fantastic display of skill and accuracy, and in the past has been a springboard for riders joining the para-dressage pathway.

“I’d like to thank Dodson & Horrell for its ongoing support of RDA and helping us to nurture and develop the talent of RDA riders across the UK.”

Dodson & Horrell marketing manager Lucy Scott added: “We are extremely pleased to announce our support of the RDA National Championships and are excited to welcome this brilliant event back to the competition calendar.

“The work the RDA does and the support it provides for the equestrian community is invaluable to riders across the country. Being able to be involved and support the event and indeed the RDA themselves as an organisation, is something we’re very proud of.”

Agria’s managing director Vicki Wentworth said the firm is “incredibly excited and proud” to be involved with the RDA.

“We are so aware of how much horses do to enrich our lives and what building a relationship with a horse can do for building confidence and happiness,” she said.

“Nothing illustrates this more than the amazing work done by the RDA, which is such a valuable and loved charity. As a horse lover, for me this charity epitomises all the good that horses bring to our lives.”

Clare Prysbet, from the RDA, said the charity is delighted to be starting a new partnership with Agria at “this important time for both our organisations”.

“With Agria’s help, we can continue to support our groups all over the UK, delivering life-changing opportunities for disabled people to benefit from time spent with horses,” she said.

“With disabled people having been disproportionately affected by Covid and lockdown, our activities are more important than ever, and we are doing everything we can to help our groups get back to strength and help more people take part.”

Celebrity Shetland partners with bedding provider

Pint-sized heartbreaker Teddy the Shetland has joined sustainable bedding firm Sorbeo’s roster of ambassadors.

Under the new sponsorship arrangement, Sorbeo and Teddy will be collaborating to promote Sorbeo through social media platforms.

“We are thrilled about our sponsorship of Teddy,’ said Fiona Hill, marketing director at Sorbeo. “As well as the highly visible aspects of the partnership, we think Teddy is the perfect character to represent our brand – he even looks like our logo!”

A teenager who learnt to ride in inner-city London has taken a major step towards his goal of being a jockey by becoming the first Riding A Dream Academy student to graduate from the British Racing School’s foundation course.

Oshane, 16, from southeast London, learnt to ride at Ebony Horse Club in Brixton, and joined the foundation course in December 2021.

He was one of the first students on the academy’s Khadijah Mellah Scholarship programme, which supports young riders from underrepresented communities get into British horse racing.

“I loved the scholarship and really enjoyed the foundation course, but it was a lot of hard work,” said Oshane.

“You get up at 6am to look after the horses and are busy all day. I loved riding all the different horses, particularly the challenging ones, and I really liked a horse called The Gay Cavalier – I just liked his way and his intelligence.

“I went back to London for a few days before starting on my yard placement and London is boring by comparison – usually you would be busy the whole time in Newmarket so I am looking forward to getting started.”

Broadcaster Oli Bell, who founded the Riding A Dream Academy alongside Great British Racing’s Naomi Lawson, said they are “all so proud” of what Oshane has achieved and “can’t wait to follow his career”.

“I first saw him at Ebony Horse Club a few years ago, and for him to have grown into the stylish rider he is today and be riding racehorses is so exciting,” said Oli.

“Oshane is the perfect example of how the Riding A Dream Academy can support young riders into the racing industry and our hope is that he is the first of many young people from the academy who go on to pursue a career in the sport.”

The academy, funded by the Racing Foundation, is based at the British Racing School in Newmarket. Demand for its programmes, which include the scholarship and a residential week, have outstripped places nearly four times over.

It aims to help racing become more diverse and inclusive and to support young people from underrepresented communities, disadvantaged backgrounds and diverse ethnic backgrounds get into racing.

A pony who helped disadvantaged young people learn to ride and was a “friend to so many” has been put down in retirement aged 20.

In 2018 Beau retired to the Horse Trust after several years with Brixton-based Ebony Horse Club. The club aims to promote education, life skills and the aspirations of young people from disadvantaged communities in the area and during his time with the organisation 14hh Beau took part in many showjumping competitions and was known for looking after his young riders carefully.

“After several years of service in the city it was decided Beau had earned his retirement in the beautiful Buckinghamshire countryside,” said a Horse Trust spokesman.

“We spent three wonderful years caring for Beau at the Horse Trust. Three years filled with love, affection and lots of cuddles. Our adorable pony enjoyed nothing more than lots of fuss and attention and was usually the first to be seen at the gate in his field patiently waiting for his breakfast each morning.”

The spokesman said Beau suffered from severe arthritis in his hocks, which progressed “quite quickly” last year.

“He was lovingly managed by our team and had lots of different treatments in order to keep him comfortable,” he said.

“We were devastated when recently Beau reached a point where we were unable to keep him free from pain and we had to make the heartbreaking decision to say goodbye.”

The spokesman said Beau was a “special pony and friends with everyone”.

“He really did enjoy the company of all humans and horses. He loved to be groomed and enjoyed spending time in his field with fellow resident Teddy. It just won’t be the same, greeting his former field friends and not seeing Beau’s loving face popping over the gate to say hello. We are so incredibly saddened and we all miss him so much.

“Our kind-hearted and affable pony was a friend to so many at the Horse Trust. He was just the most sweet, loving soul who made us smile every time we would see him.

“Beau, you had a wonderful career helping so many young people and impacting so many lives for the better. We have been honoured to provide you with even more love and happiness in retirement and we know you are now galloping free over the rainbow bridge, pain free. Sleep tight Beau, you really were one superstar pony.”

A spokesman for Ebony Horse Club said the organisation was “so sad” to hear “wonderful” Beau had died and thanked the Horse Trust for caring for him during his retirement.

“He was so loved,” he said.

PEOPLE working in urban riding schools are working with British Equestrian (BEF) in a new scheme to help “transform lives and communities”.

The Equi-Youth programme, funded by Sport England and run with the Pony Club, is supporting volunteers and staff, from centres including Ebony Horse Club, the Urban Equestrian Academy, St James City Farm and Park Palace Ponies, to develop their skills and enable them to coach young people.

The 18-month scheme is designed to give a “complete coaching education”, including building skills in teaching riding, getting the most out of riders and working with young people.

BEF head of performance pathways David Hamer said: “Interviewing for our first cohort was a very rewarding experience – we were blown away by the enthusiasm, passion for the sport, and love of horses that each candidate shared.

“They all had a compelling narrative as to how they got into equestrianism and how much they’ve gained from being able to ride. They also expressed so much gratitude for this opportunity, but we are genuinely grateful to them for coming forward. Already, I’m enjoying following their journeys and can’t wait to see how they progress.”

The scheme’s lead mentors are British Horse Society fellows Darrell Scaife and Sarah MacDonald.

Mr Scaife said: “It’s been a great experience so far and the candidates are incredibly engaged, despite having to fit the programme in around busy lives and work commitments. All the coaches involved have the ability to go on and inspire so many young people and get them enjoying riding, and it’s really exciting to be a part of it.”

Mother-of-three Shantelle Griffith, who worked for the NHS and rode as a child, wanted to get back into horses and stumbled upon the Urban Equestrian Academy, where she now volunteers.

“I jumped at the chance to take part in the programme. It’s really interesting – Sarah and Darrell are guiding us in the right direction, making us feel really comfortable and welcome, and it’s really exciting,” she said. “I feel as though I’ve gone full circle – the course is building my confidence and confirming that I’m doing the right thing. I’m able to apply what I learn to the kids back to Urban Equestrian Academy, who inspire me as much as I’d like to inspire them.

“Horses have always been my passion and it’s a dream for me to be able to be a coach and mentor to the young kids. It’s everything, and I feel proud to be picked to be on the programme.”

An initiative aimed at introducing disadvantaged children to the wide range of career opportunities in the equestrian industry has been relaunched.

The London International Horse Show Riding Academy, first initiated in 2019 by London International (formerly Olympia) organisers with Ebony Horse Club in Brixton, returned with an event on 3 November attended by showjumper Jack Whitaker, Paralympic dressage rider Natasha Baker, and equestrian officials.

A spokesman for the academy said 12 teenagers from Ebony attended and gained “invaluable experience”.

“Attendees had the opportunity to meet top riders and equestrian officials, learn and engage, and receive advice and guidance on possible career paths,” said the spokesman “For many, the highlight of the day was a riding lesson from Jack. Students were also given the opportunity to spend time with Natasha and learn about her journey and successes, as well as viewing her many medals.

“Participants also benefited from an informative talk from Winnie Murphy [British Equestrian head of communications] who spoke about the various career opportunities within equestrianism, beyond riding, and the pathways available to kick-start their chosen vocations.”

The spokesman added that the London International recognises the importance of supporting and reaching out to less privileged local communities to inspire and advise children on how to further their passion for equestrianism. The event had mental health as a “central theme”, from keeping in the best frame of mind for competition to the role horses can play in improving a person’s mental health.

Jack said it was “amazing” to see the opportunities Ebony Horse Club provides to young people.

“It’s brilliant the London International Horse Show has brought everyone together and used their platform to support the local community in this way. The show always goes above and beyond and I have really enjoyed it and learnt a lot myself too,” he said.

London International show director Simon Brooks-Ward said the academy is “so important” to the organising team.

“With this initiative we hope to widen accessibility and participation to the equestrian industry to those individuals and communities who have more barriers to the sport,” he said.

“The academy provides a platform in which children can learn about how to create a career within the industry and we hope the children were inspired from the day.”

Olympic medallist Tina Cook and her European team gold medal-winning ride Billy The Red are helping to inspire the next generation of riders at an inner-city riding club.

Following the success of equestrian sport at the Tokyo Olympics, Tina and the 14-year-old gelding surprised the young people of Brixton-based charity Ebony Horse Club with a visit. The charity uses riding and horses to help build young people’s life skills.

Tina gave a demonstration of riding and jumping Billy The Red, spent time teaching the young people and joined them on a group hack on one of the centre’s horses. The children also enjoyed trying on some of Tina’s medals.

“I’m here to show that riding can be for everybody, whether you live in the countryside with luscious fields and acres of land to ride over, or here in London. They’ve got lovely horses here for the children to come and have a taste of it and see if it’s what they want to do and if they have a passion for it,” said Tina.

“In the end it’s the passion and the hard work and dedication that goes into this sport – there are many people that have proved that, who have gone on to be the best in the world. I love my horses, I’ve worked very hard with them but I want the kids to realise that I enjoy mucking out, brushing, and the general everyday graft that goes with our sport. It’s not just keeping myself fit and healthy, it’s making sure the horses are fit and healthy.”

Ebony business and funding manager Naomi Howgate said it was “so inspiring” for the young people to meet Tina and Billy The Red.

“Having this beautiful horse being ridden by an Olympic rider in our arena, interacting and being taught by her really gives them a huge boost in their aspirations and ambitions,” she said.

Parent Julia said meeting Tina had given the children something to aspire to.

“When you meet someone it’s different from reading about it or seeing it on TV so I think that was really special,” she said.

Young inner-city riders look set to benefit from new pathways into the eventing world thanks to a new partnership with the Windrush Equestrian Foundation.

Ebony Horse Club and the foundation, which was set up in memory of rider Christina Knudsen to support talented young eventers, have joined forces to offer more opportunities to Ebony riders.

The partnership kicked off this month at the young eventers’ programme summer camp, held at the Billy Stud, at which Ebony riders joined foundation eventers for a day of training with Pippa Funnell.

Windrush chief executive Mariachiara Apruzzese said: “It was truly special to have a few young riders from Ebony Horse Club attend the training at the Billy Stud with our riders.

“We are very excited about this partnership and are looking forward to offering more opportunities for Ebony riders to experience the eventing world alongside our mentors and riders.”

The Ebony riders, with yard manager Tom, spent time with Windrush mentor Pippa, learning about running a professional yard and training future star riders. The partnership aims to offer training and work experience in eventing.

Ebony Horse Club general manager Naomi Howgate said: “A key part of Ebony Horse Club’s mission is to provide new opportunities and raise the aspirations of our young people.

“Working with the Windrush Equestrian Foundation helps us do this in a very exciting way. Having our youngsters work with top riders and coaches inspires them for the future and helps them learn things that they wouldn’t learn in their regular lessons at our centre. Maybe one day we will see an Ebony rider compete alongside a Windrush rider as a result of this exciting partnership.”

The foundation wants to explore the possibility of eventing work experience placements that would be suitable for Ebony members. Any yards or businesses that could offer such opportunities is asked to email info@windrushfoundation.org.uk

H&H finds out about ongoing efforts to improve diversity in the equestrian industry, and what more still needs to be done

GREAT strides have been made in improving diversity in the equestrian industry – although there is of course more work to be done.

Providers of higher and further education are working together to increase and improve access to their land-based courses to under-represented communities, while campaigners are working with brands and sporting bodies to improve representation.

Linda Greening, head of inclusivity at Hartpury University Centre, told H&H she approached Landex, Land-Based Colleges & Universities Aspiring to Excellence, about a joint plan.

She said it came from her role as education liaison officer with the BAME Equine and Rural Activities Focus Group (BERF).

“The executive members were very keen to pass on details to their widening participation groups,” she said. “I think a lot of us have been challenged to address the high proportion of white students we’ve historically attracted.”

Ms Greening said the group is working on an action plan, and outcomes from that, on linking with education providers’ regional communities.

“We [Hartpury] are developing a good relationship with St James City Farm, and I know Hadlow College has a good relationship with Ebony Horse Club, and there are lots more community-based projects that could be involved,” she said, adding that the range of equestrian courses on offer at the different institutions gives a huge number of options for careers in the equestrian industry.

“It opens so many doors,” she said, adding that the colleges and universities can also share imagery and resources to provide role models to young people from under-represented communities.

“I think the community-based outreach is a fantastic way to reach families; educating them as much as the young people,” she said. “I’m really excited about this.”

BERF founder Sandra Murphy said Ms Greening’s “fantastic” work addresses an issue she has raised before, of the lack of opportunities for young people from under-represented communities to progress in the equestrian industry .

Ms Murphy is now on the British Equestrian (BEF) equality engagement group, and has been working with BEF member bodies.

“The Pony Club, for example, has been really proactive; they’ve got one of our BERF members on the handbook cover,” she told H&H. “We’re also collaborating with a leading equestrian brand, which is looking at working with us, on design, like hats with skin colour chin straps, and using BERF members to do their modelling. They’ll be so lifted to see their pictures in magazines; isn’t it wonderful we can do things like that?”

Ms Murphy also cited the diversity presentations at ths 2021 National Equine Forum (news, 11 March) and progress in her plans for a “centre of BAME excellence” for riders.

“We’ve sent out the proposal for the centre, now we need support and guidance,” she said. “We need a pilot, to see if it works, but we need people to believe in the vision. If we build it, people will come; if we don’t, there’s nowhere to go.”

The FEI’s centenary celebrations, which launched on 28 May, aim to “shine a spotlight on diversity in equestrian sport”.

“The FEI’s 100-year celebration is about bringing together each and every individual who connects with the horse at any level,” said FEI president Ingmar De Vos.

“We want this to be an inclusive celebration commemorating our collective journey over the past 100 years and looking ahead to shaping the future of equestrian sports together as a united community.

“Equestrian sport is rich in diversity and the one key factor that binds everyone together is our shared connection with and passion for the horse. For equestrian sport to continue to grow and flourish we need to make sure that together we cherish all members of our community and that everyone contributes to the key values at the heart of the sport.”

Christmas Day was a bit different for many people this winter — possibly for none more so than Stewart Turner.

The 40-something father of three found himself riding in the buff, apart from a fetching Father Christmas hat, late in the evening of 25 December.

Stewart, who has only recently taken up riding and bought his first horse soon afterwards, has amassed a huge following on social media, and has used that to raise money for equestrian charities.

He told H&H he realised last year that he had some 16,000 followers on Instagram, including Carl Hester, which gave him an idea.

“I said if I made it to 20,000 by Christmas — which was pretty unbelievable — I’d ride naked on Christmas Day,” he said.

“I wanted to cheer people up, then everyone started sharing the post and I had a slight panic!”

Stewart spoke to a friend who had supported his fundraising in the past, and who agreed to donate £500. Another two friends said they would match this.

“Some other people said they’d sponsor me too, all in aid of Ebony Horse Club. I didn’t get to 20,000 but people weren’t giving me money to get followers, they were doing it for me to get naked on a horse, so I thought ‘Right, I’m going to have to do it!’”

Stewart had intended to do the deed on Christmas morning but there were children about at the yard, which scuppered his plans, so he went back in the evening.

“I thought there wouldn’t be anyone there but there was,” he said. “I chatted for a bit, and then thought ‘You’re not going, are you?’ So I went to put the school lights on and the yard owner asked what I was doing.

“I said ‘Something for charity’, and she said ‘You’re not getting naked, are you?’ I put music on the video soundtrack but before that, all you could hear was her laughing her head off.”

Stewart used an automatic tracking device to film his ride — “my wife said she wouldn’t and neither would my children; the looks of disgust on their faces!” — and then did some tactful editing on the footage, especially when sitting trot meant “a bit too much was on show”.

Stewart said he chose Ebony to benefit as he has long felt that he would like to help children from disadvantaged backgrounds learn to ride, and have access to horses, which the inner-city riding club does so well.

And is he a convert to riding in the buff?

“Well, if something else came up, I’d consider it,” he said. “I’m not sure what I’d do next though, maybe showjumping!”

Ebony Horse Club has won its second FEI solidarity award, 10 years after it first took the title.

The London club has been recognised as the best of the decade in this year’s international awards, which sought the winners of the past 10 years rather than just 2020 owing to the coronavirus pandemic.

It was the second award of the week for Ebony, whose horse Splash was named inspirational animal of the year in the 2020 Daily Mirror Animal Hero Awards.

Ebony general manager Naomi Howate told H&H it was a fantastic week for the club.

“It’s been amazing to win these two awards,” she said. “We were the furthest back nominee as we won in 2009, so we weren’t fresh in people’s minds, and the others in the category were fantastic.

“We had no idea we were going to win. It was all down to public vote, and worldwide; the fact people took the time to look at what we do and vote is brilliant.

“The fact we won again 10 years on shows the longevity of our work, that it’s still effective and having an impact on kids’ lives. That’s what’s really special about it.”

She added: “Ebony is a youth club with horses, rather than a riding centre, because our ethos is all about helping our young people be the best they can be both on and off the horses.”

The FEI has given Ebony a grant to support its projects.

“We are a small club and we don’t have lots of resources,” Naomi said. “Donations are everything, as it is how we can provide the work we are doing. We support about 400 young people in a year and we can only do that with donations of money that allow us to run our services. So receiving this from the FEI is fantastic.”

More than 70,000 votes were cast for the awards, the winners of which were revealed in a video narrated by multiple medal-winning British para dressage rider Natasha Baker.

Double Olympic Eventing team gold medallist Ingrid Klimke won a second Peden Bloodstock best athlete award, while team Klimke’s head groom Carmen Thiemann took the Cavalor best groom award.

The runners-up in these awards were another partnership; Charlotte Dujardin and supergroom Alan Davies.

The against all odds award went to German Paralympian Angelika Trabert, who was born without legs and only three fingers on her right hand, and is well known for her “indefatigable” spirit and her motto “It’s ability, not disability, that counts”.

German dressage rider Semmieke Rothenberger won the Longines FEI Rising Star Award.

FEI president Ingmar de Vos said: “Our global and diverse community is built on our shared passion for horsemanship, and the team spirit, which is so present in all five of our winners, is replicated around the world and at every level of the sport, both on and off the field.

“Passion and resilience define our community, and these values are echoed in the stories of each of our FEI awards winners for 2020. A coloured gelding who not only teaches young people to ride but is also their friend and confidante has been named inspirational animal of the year.

Splash, from Ebony Horse Club in Brixton, was among the worthy winners of the 2020 Daily Mirror Animal Hero Awards.

Ebony general manager Naomi Howgate told H&H that when Splash arrived as a five-year-old, six years ago, he “didn’t know what a cross-pole was and would trip over trotting poles”.

“But he’s absolutely flourished,” she said. “He’s amazing; truly one in a million.”

The award citation states that Splash has “helped to transform the lives of children and disadvantaged young people at a groundbreaking inner city riding club”.

Naomi said when the Ebony team heard about the awards, they were discussing which of their horses they should put forward.

“All our horses are heroes to us because they’re so fantastic but Splash is one who can do absolutely anything,” she said.

“He’s as solid as anything; the other week a football flew over the fence into the arena and hit him, and he didn’t flinch. We work with children with disabilities and additional needs and he’s great with them, but with our more experienced teenagers, he’ll jump round at a metre and do lateral work, and if we take him to shows, he always gets placed in cob and coloured classes. He’s incredible.”

Naomi said the role horses like Splash play is not just as an animal to ride.

“They’re literally the kids’ best friends,” she said. “When they get here, the first thing they want to do is give him a carrot or groom him; he’s like a confidante to people.

“Some of our kids might have grown up in an environment without much love, or someone to tell secrets to — he’s that for them.”

Splash’s CV also includes work in prisons, and he was the star of a Blue Peter challenge to take a presenter who had never ridden before to jumping a course in six weeks.

“We knew Splash could do it,” Naomi said, adding that the programme is due to be aired next year. “He was brilliant, and totally turned it on for the cameras.”

Naomi said the team was “absolutely over the moon” at Splash’s win.

“It was the proudest day of my career!” she said. “Especially in a year that’s been challenging for everyone but especially heartbreaking for the kids when they were separated from the horses. Most of our kids aren’t from high-income families, they don’t have big gardens or access to open space and during lockdown, they just wanted to see the horses.

“We couldn’t do any of what we do without horses like Splash so for him to get this recognition is super special.”

Top riders including Nick Skelton, Laura Collett and Carl Hester are backing a new campaign to drive increased diversity and inclusion in equestrianism.

Reece McCook, founder of Ride Out Racism, has joined forces with Daisy Honeybunn and her husband Pravin Mukhi, founders of the DHD Foundation charitable trust, to launch #IAMPARTOFTHECHANGE.

H&H reported this summer that Reece had set up his campaign after years of discrimination, judging and verbal abuse, not to mention the fact he was the only person of colour in every equestrian establishment he had been in.

“It was disheartening and I lost my confidence – my dreams were shattered and I didn’t think I’d ever be able to work in the industry,” he said. “But with the support of friends and family I set up Ride Out Racism, to lower barriers and make the sport more accessible and diverse on every level.”

Reece met Hickstead director Daisy when he was nominated to appear on her Horse & Country TV series Daisy Dines With, through his work as an ambassador for the Urban Equestrian Academy.

“Reece is a very determined and impressive young man, and he is doing such important work within our sport and industry,” Daisy said.

“We have become great friends, and we wanted to work on a campaign together that could actually spark real effective change. We want to build a more diverse equestrian world, where seeing faces of every colour, and people from every sphere of life is the norm, and where acceptance is automatic.

“Many people and organisations are already working extraordinarily hard within the industry towards this goal, but there is still a long way to go. We wanted our campaign not only to show people the projects we are working on, but also to create a platform for others to share their own work and ideas.”

Some of Britain’s top equestrians are in the running for the 2020 FEI Awards, which aim to celebrate the best of the last decade.

Nick Skelton, Charlotte Dujardin and the Ebony Horse Club in Brixton feature on the shortlists for the awards, which will be decided entirely by public vote.

As there has been so little sport this year owing to the coronavirus pandemic, the nominees in each category are those who have won that award in the past.

There are 55 nominees, from 19 nations, in five awards categories: Longines FEI rising star; Peden Bloodstock FEI best athlete; Cavalor FEI best groom; FEI against all odds; and FEI solidarity.

Both Nick and Charlotte feature in the best athlete category, against the likes of Michael Jung, Isabell Werth and Ingris Klimke. The British riders’ grooms, Mark Beever and Alan Davies respectively, appear in the grooms’ shortlist, along with William Fox-Pitt’s head girl Jackie Potts and freelancer Michelle Tipper.

Showjumper Jessica Mendoza is Britain’s representative in the rising star category, in which Irish showjumper Harry Allen also features.

South London’s Ebony Horse Club, which aims to transform the lives of young people in disadvantaged communities, is shortlisted for the solidarity award.

“These awards are a way to honour the heroes of our sport through their amazing stories of resilience, horsemanship, determination and passion,” said FEI president Ingmar De Vos.

“Equestrian is not just a sport, but a way of life for many people and this has been a desperately difficult year for the equestrian community, just as it has been for everyone, in every sector. Now, more than ever, we need to focus on the positives that our sport has to offer and celebrate the fantastic ambassadors that we have, both on the field of play and behind the scenes making a difference.”

Voting is open, via the FEI website, from today (10 November) until 22 November. The winners will be announced the second week of December.

As a spotlight is thrown on the lack of ethnic diversity in the British equestrian industry, H&H investigates what action is being taken to address the issue...

“I’ve had people stop me to say: ‘I didn’t think Black or Asian people rode horses’. It’s about changing that mindset.”

Imran Atcha, who runs St James City Farm Riding School in Gloucester, told H&H he has often been approached, when riding, by people who had never thought they could sit on a horse – and want to try.

He believes this lack of awareness is a major factor in the lack of ethnic diversity in British equestrianism – which he and others are working to change, to improve accessibility to our sport for all.

“We need role models,” Imran said. “We need someone who people in the area can relate to. If they see someone from the same background, they can relate to that person, but if everyone appears to be the same type, and wealthy, there’s a feeling riding is only for wealthy people – and for the ethnic minority community, it’s multiplied. When they see someone like me, that I can ride and am willing to help others into the sport, and there are other people like me, it’s easier.”

Imran believes change has to come from the grassroots level; the top riders of the future have to start at the bottom, but these potential equestrians have to be inspired, to know it is possible for them, to take the sport up in the first place.

He cites Peckham teenager Khadijah Mellah’s 2019 victory in the Magnolia Cup – the first time a British Muslim had ridden a winner in the UK, and the first time anyone had raced in a hijab – as an inspiration.

“People from minority communities, second or third generation, might not have heard of Carl Hester or AP McCoy, but they’ve heard of her,” he said. “That’s the first step.”

Khadijah learned to ride at Ebony Horse Club in Brixton, another city riding school aiming to make horses accessible to those who may not otherwise have had the opportunity.

Like Imran, Ebony’s co-founder Naomi Howgate is involved with a new British Equestrian (BEF) initiative set up last autumn, the equality engagement group, which the BEF hopes will help it engage with people already working in the area to “help us provide equal opportunities for all to take part in equestrian sport, and to make what we do more accessible”.

Imran said Khadijah’s story shows the importance of schools like Ebony, but that many such organisations are in a “vacuum”. BEF head of participation Anna Hall told H&H the equality group wants to help connect and support these organisations in their work.

“We have challenges, but the way we’re approaching them is through these groups – to link people who can drive action,” she said. “We don’t want the BEF to plan a misguided project; there’s nothing worse than a bunch of well-meaning people saying, ‘This is what we think you want’; the idea is to support people. It might take more time, but it’ll deliver a better result.”

The first group meeting was held last autumn, to find out about the barriers to accessing the sport. The next session, planned to start addressing the issues, was due to be held this spring, but was delayed by the coronavirus.

Anna said the barriers cited were much as expected – cost is a major factor in accessing riding, perception of elitism – but geography is also a major barrier. Rural areas, in which horses are most often found, are also generally those with the lowest proportions of BAME residents.

“We know that if riding schools go into urban areas, people are interested, and want to be involved,” she said. “The love of horses goes across all races.”

Dressage Olympian Emile Faurie set up the Emile Faurie Foundation 14 years ago to help children access riding who may not otherwise have been able to.

“One of the first programmes we did was in Birmingham; we took a couple of horses to a location and the children came out to see them,” he told H&H.

“There was a Black girl who stayed at the back, and when we encouraged her to come forward, she said, ‘I can’t’. I asked why not and she said, ‘Black people don’t ride’. That really struck a chord.”

Emile’s foundation sponsored a young Black rider to complete a college degree in equine studies, and he believes, and hopes, diversity in equestrianism is moving in the right direction.

“It boils down to money,” he said. “If we can get more funding, we can help more kids ride.

“We require school attendance from children [who take part], and we’ve had so many letters from schools about the incredible difference it’s made to children when they get the opportunity to ride, on attendance and concentration. Especially children from minority groups; it integrates them so much more and gives them more confidence.”

Lydia Heywood, a 23-year-old event rider who grew up in Britain and rides for Jamaica, currently at two-star level, said she “puts a lot of thought into ideas that could make a difference”.

“Thankfully my mum has given everything to get me where I am, but funds to build a competitive string and train towards the Olympics need establishing now,” she told H&H.

Lydia works with Ebony, giving her time free of charge as much as possible, and is keen to be involved with the BEF work. She created her Cool Ridings project, which will aid her aims to grow a bursary scheme for young riders.

“There’s a link missing between the foundations and competitive riding; there’s not enough diversity on the circuit,” she said.

“I make trips to Ebony and have trained groups in Jamaica; there’s a lot of natural ability and passion – I’d like to inspire other people into the sport.”

Lydia, who said “children can’t be what they don’t see”, wants to “reveal the avenues of hope in the equestrian world” and has been working with St James.

“Since Pony Club days, I felt people double-take seeing me on a horse, but it never upset me,” she added. “I’d like to think it’s a positive thing, and let my riding and smiling do the talking.”

Lydia’s grandparents are from Jamaica and she believes we will see more diversity at the elite level of the sport in the next generation; “But I’d love to see more help for people now,” she said.

Another figure working with the BEF is Reece McCook, a mixed-heritage rider who has launched the Ride out Racism campaign.

The 18-year-old told H&H he has wanted to be an eventer since childhood, so completed a college course and then went to work on a yard – but left after he was racially abused.

“I wanted to give up riding as I felt I wasn’t the right stereotype,” he said. “After a lot of encouragement, I picked myself up, and had the idea to start the campaign to try to defeat the barriers I and other ethnic minorities face. Racism is still there in our sport.”

Support for others

Reece said he wants riders to know they are not alone, and that there is support and people to talk to, for others in his situation.

“It had never been as direct as that one incident, but growing up, and say, going to tack shops, I always felt I stuck out like a sore thumb,” he said. “Even at college, people would ask if I was sure this was what I wanted to do, or if I’d ridden before; [racism] was implicit in what was said.

“There are so many barriers that need to be broken down, and with all the Black Lives Matter coverage, I thought it the perfect time to see what I can do to open doors for people.

“So many people have come forward to tell their stories; it’s empowering to know you’re not alone. Horses bring so much good; everyone should have the chance to get involved, whatever their heritage or background.”

Reece hopes to promote cohesion and raise awareness of issues, including helping to dispel the stereotype of a typical rider. He feels social media can play a big part, and also hopes to encourage equestrian brands to feature riders from underrepresented ethnic backgrounds in their imagery.

“It looks like the industry is willing to listen, and open to change, which is good,” he said.

Dannie Morgan, an advanced eventer and grand prix dressage rider, has had a more positive experience than some. He told H&H he has never experienced any discrimination, or felt different to others in his sport, praising the governing bodies for their support of his career.

Imran added: “There’s much more to be done. We need more capacity; people with the passion to act may not have the paperwork skills, and need to be hand-held. I’d like to see organisations like ours elsewhere, offering affordable riding to everyone.

“But I’m an optimistic person. With the BEF approach, that can filter down through the disciplines and they can lead the way. That gives me hope.”

A documentary charting the story the Peckham teenager Khadijah Mellah, who made history at this summer’s Glorious Goodwood, will air on ITV this weekend.

Khadijah, 18, stormed into the history books when she won the Magnolia Cup at the Sussex racecourse on 1 August.

She first sat on a racehorse just four months previously and the Magnolia Cup marked the first time a person had raced in a hijab on a British racecourse, with her victory making her the first British Muslim woman to ride a winner on UK soil.

Riding A Dream, produced by UnVeil Arts, will be shown on ITV at 12.15pm on Saturday (2 November) — directly after the Rugby World Cup final.

“A big part of my life has been proving people wrong,” said Khadijah, who won the charity race aboard the Charlie Fellows-trained Haverland.

“I am thrilled that I am part of a shift in social understanding of what women can achieve and what they can be good at. There’s quite a stereotype around Muslim girls and them ‘not being able to follow their sporting dreams’. I want to be a role model to anyone who wants to do something that they wouldn’t initially believe was in their comfort zone and allow people to follow their aspirations and dreams.”

One young rider from Brixton’s Ebony Horse Club will be donning silks and breeches for the first time in this year’s Magnolia Cup on 1 August, during the Qatar Goodwood Festival.

Khadijah Mellah is currently combining studying for her A-levels this summer with a gruelling fitness regime, in preparation for her transition from riding club ponies to thoroughbreds on raceday at the West Sussex track.

The 18-year-old, who hopes to study engineering at university in September, has been a member of the Ebony Horse Club for five years. Having learnt to ride at the London riding school — which offers inner-city children the opportunity to develop and work alongside horses — Khadijah went on to ride out for racehorse trainers Chris Wall in Newmarket and Simon Dow in Epsom. The teenager visited a racecourse for the first time when attending Newmarket’s Craven Meeting in April.

“I am super-duper excited about riding in the Magnolia Cup,” she said. “It was a great experience riding at Chris and Simon’s yards, and seeing how different racehorses are.

“It was my first time on a racecourse at Newmarket last month so it was good to get my head around what a raceday is like and what it’ll be like on the day. It’s going to be a busy few months with my A-levels as well but I can’t wait to get going.”

She will be joining 11 other riders at the start line in the famous charity race, including model Vogue Williams and former Olympic cyclist Victoria Pendleton.

Young jockeys and their mini mounts took to the hallowed Ascot Racecourse turf on Monday, 8 April, during a pony-racing day organised by the Lord Leconfield branch of the Pony Club.

For many of the youngsters, racing is in their blood and they have become established jockeys in the racing saddle at a young age, but for five children on Monday, the day’s experience was a far cry from their home-life in the City.

The children from Ebony Horse Club in Brixton, London, have been trained up by coach Natalie O’Rourke at her Park Lane Stables in Teddington over a period of six months — enjoying two training sessions a month culminating in the Ascot raceday.

“I did a total of 12 sessions with the children, who are all from disadvantaged backgrounds without their own ponies to ride,” said Natalie. “They were all so committed to the training and I gave them fitness targets to work on at home, including some running and squat exercises.”

The training started in the sand school at Park Lane Stables on the riding school’s ponies, building the children’s balance and confidence, before they headed out on hacks in the parkland surrounding the yard.

During the final countdown to the raceday at Ascot, Natalie took the children and ponies to the point-to-point yard of Phil York in Effingham, Surrey, to use his gallops on Sundays.

“This helped the children become more competent going fast on the ponies and, although there were some tumbles along the way, all the children did brilliantly,” Natalie added.

“They had all had lessons at Ebony previously, but had never ridden at the standard of their fellow competitors at Ascot. My role as their coach was to build their confidence and teach them vital racing skills such as bridging their reins — they all worked so hard and I am very proud of them.

“All of their mounts were riding-school ponies from Park Lane Stables, which shows how versatile ponies can be.”

The icing on the cake came in the maiden 148cm race, when one of Natalie’s students, 12-year-old O’Shane Marsh (pictured, below), won on his debut aboard “the best all-rounder you could ever meet”, Dougie.

“All the children did so well on the day, but to get a winner was a fairytale,” added Natalie, who has been involved in the Pony Racing Authority (PRA) initiative for three years. “O’Shane was really chuffed with his achievement and his family was there to watch him, they were over the moon too. I think the cheer he received was louder than the one for Tiger Roll at Aintree on Saturday!

“The goal now for O’Shane is to pursue his dream of being a jockey and he will head to the British Racing School when he is old enough.”

Natalie’s Park Lane Stables works collaboratively with Ebony Horse Club in an initiative funded by the PRA. Following the raceday at Ascot, there is a graduate scheme put in place by the PRA, which is designed to help young jockeys climb the ladder and progress onto faster ponies.

“The initiative is a great way for children, who have grown up in difficult circumstances and don’t have a pony, to channel their energy in a positive way,” she added. “For many who struggle at school, it is also a path into a career within the racing industry.

“It is brilliant to be involved in the scheme, after all everyone has to start somewhere. I will now start training another five children for a pony-racing day at Lingfield in October.”

The selection process for the young Ebony jockeys includes them writing a letter to the PRA explaining their wish to be on the pony-racing scheme.

“It is such a great opportunity for these children,” concluded Natalie. “Seeing them gallop past the finishing post at Ascot is always very special.”

A short film highlighting the impact a riding school is having on the lives of inner city children has gone viral online.

Ebony Horse Club is based in Coldharbour, south London, which is one of the most deprived areas in the country.

More than 120 young people visit the centre each week and more than 1,000 children have learnt to ride there.

Among these is 12-year-old Omari, who stars in the clip by ITV.

“Coming here has calmed me down in school, stopped me from coming to trouble, because I know as soon as that bell rings, I’m on my way here” said Omari.

“Coming here has helped me mentally and physically. It’s calmed me down and taught me a lot — and it’s helped me outside school and outside Ebony.

“The horses themselves have taught us a lot. They’ve taught us to be caring, kind, calm, and to be ourselves around horses.

“Before I came to horse club I had never, ever interacted with a horse, I had only seen pictures or seen one from a far distance.

“No matter how poor you are, or how rich you are, it doesn’t stop you from loving horses.”

The clip has been viewed more than a million times on Facebook and the surge in public interest temporarily crashed the charity’s website.

Naomi Howgate, Ebony Horse Club’s business and funding manager, told H&H: “We’re very proud of Omari and all our star riders and we’re delighted that the video has touched so many people.

“As a small charity we are always striving to help more young people like Omari and we are grateful for any ongoing support to do this.”

Just under two years later, two riders from the club made their pony racing debut at Ascot.

Young riders from an inner-city riding school have made their polo debut.

The team, from Ebony Horse Club in Brixton, have been practising over the summer and played in front of crowds at Ham Polo Club on 23 September.

The youngsters were pitted against staff and volunteers from the charity, who were also polo novices, in a match to raise funds for the riding club.

ITV broadcaster and Ebony Horse Club patron Ronke Phillips threw in the first ball and after two chukkas, a 2-1 victory was claimed by the staff and volunteers’ team.

Pint-sized Shetland Pedro, who became an internet sensation after a specially-designed periscope was made for his stable, also attended as mascot.

“Polo is a team sport, which is different to other riding we’ve done, like dressage,” said 16-year-old Khadijah.

“You’re working together and there’s one aim – to score goals!”

Her teammate Grace added she would “love to do it again”.

“Where I live people don’t really know about horses, let alone polo, so it was amazing to be able to play,” she said.

Later that afternoon, Vendetta, captained by Garrie Renucci, took on Natascha Hedegaard’s University of London team, winning 5-4.

Ebony Horse Club chair of trustees Sue Collins said 2017 marks the charity’s 21st year.

“It was the perfect time to launch this new fundraising event, and we hope to make this a regular summer fixture,” she added.

“It’s been a thoroughly enjoyable day for spectators and players alike and every penny we raised today helps young people to build better futures.”

The charity is based in Coldharbour, south London, which is one of the most deprived areas in the country.

In 2011, the Duchess of Cornwall officially opened the charity’s community riding centre. Before this, children were taken by minibus to riding schools around London.

Since the riding centre opened, more than 1,000 children have learnt to ride in Brixton.

The charity has also teamed up with Appletree Stud and the Pony Racing Authority in recent years to give its members the chance to try pony racing.

Hard-working Shetland Pedro is retiring to the countryside after years of bringing joy to young people in inner-city London.

The pint-sized star rose to fame after winning hearts by learning to use a specially designed periscope — dubbed a “Pedroscope” — to see out over his stable door.

He has been living with Ebony Horse Club in Brixton for the past three years and has met numerous celebrities during his time with the charity.

Sadly arthritis has started to set in and the 17-year-old gelding has moved Surrey to live out his twilight years in the countryside.

“It was a tough decision as he’s been such an asset to the club and everyone loves having him here, said Dan Cook from the charity.

“But the welfare of the horses has to take priority, so he’s going to a wonderful home in Epsom that will help his condition.”

Among his famous pals are Clare Balding, showjumper Ben Maher, the Duchess of Cornwall, presenter Lauren Lavern and author James Bowen (A Street Cat Named Bob).

“May I wish Pedro a very happy retirement after a life lived in the service of others,” said Clare.

“He has mastered the art of pretending to let children take control while dragging them towards a patch of tasty grass.

“He has been a marvellous mascot for Ebony Horse Club as it continues to help children grow in confidence, develop relationships with and learn the discipline of caring for another living being.”

The pony will be much missed by his best friend Parker, a miniature poodle who enjoys sitting on Pedro’s back (pictured).

“Parker was super timid and afraid of everything,” said his owner, senior youth worker Holly Lieberson.

“Then one day I found him sat next to Pedro in the yard and since then they’ve been inseparable pals. Parker is very sad to see Pedro go, as are we all.”

The diminutive pony also met feline film star “Bob”, of A Street Cat Named Bob fame.

“Bob likes horses,” said James (pictured, below, with Bob and Pedro).

“We used to meet the police horses when we were busking around Covent Garden but he’d never sat on one until we visited Ebony Horse Club and he got a ride on Pedro.

“It’s an amazing charity that helps young people through introducing them to horses. I know the power that caring for an animal can have.

“The horses help the kids face their problems, like how Bob has helped me. I hope he enjoys his retirement. He deserves it.”

Young equestrians from an inner-city riding school made their racecourse debut at none other than the hallowed ground of Ascot earlier this week.

Members of Brixton’s Ebony Horse Club have been learning to race-ride over the past 18 months in a joint scheme with the Pony Racing Authority (PRA).

Four aspiring jockeys from south east London have been taking part in the initiative, which has also enlisted the help of Julie and Patrick Scott of Appletree Stud in Banbury.

On Monday (10 April), two of these members — Grace Mpungi and Abdus Mellah — both aged 13, rode in their first race at the Lord Leconfield Hunt’s Pony Club Raceday at Ascot.

Their respective rides were Eddy and Trigger, both leant by Park Lane Stables in Teddington.

“To begin with I felt a bit sick because I was so nervous,” said Grace. “The race went by in a flash — I went faster than I have ever been before and I was really proud of myself.

“For me to be racing at a prestigious place like Ascot gives me a great story to tell my family and friends. I would definitely do it again.”

They were joined by a support team of family, friends, volunteers, youth workers and fellow Ebony Horse Club members.

“I had an amazing day and loved the environment,” said Abdus (pictured, top).

“It was a good learning opportunity and it taught me what I should and shouldn’t do for next time.

“I went so fast as I rode up I could see the stands and the scenery was mind blowing. I had this rush of adrenaline. I love racing!”

Ebony Horse Club is a charity that offers young people an opportunity to learn to ride and care for horses.

Based between tower blocks and a railway line in Coldharbour — one of the most disadvantaged areas of the capital — the charity provides access to horses for more than 160 youngsters a week.

Edward Gillespie, former managing director at Cheltenham and PRA chairman, has been among those helping the young riders. He also attended the day and gave the supporters a tour of the world-famous racecourse and to explain the ins and outs of racing.

“Seeing Grace and Abdus ride so well in their first ever races was a real thrill,” he said. “Many, many congratulations to all the team at Ebony Horse Club for taking this project on with such enthusiasm and expertise.

“This is just the beginning and the PRA looks forward to working with Ebony and other city-centre equestrian academies to give young people an opportunity to fulfill a dream of experiencing race-riding.”

Letty Porter, engagement and funding manager at Ebony Horse Club, told H&H that it was the “most amazing day”.

“To have Brixton riders on Ascot racecourse was just incredible,” she added. “What was amazing about the whole day was that it was a replica of a professional race meeting.

“The young riders had to be registered and weigh-in with their saddles — it was all done very properly — and there were escort ponies to take the combinations down to the racetrack.

“That was what made it so incredibly special.”

An inner-city London stables has celebrated 21 years of teaching young people to ride.

The Duchess of Cornwall visited Ebony Horse Club in Brixton, of which she is president, to mark the milestone and meet its ponies, riders and supporters.

The community riding club was founded in 1996 by Ros Spearing and volunteers would drive members to London riding schools for lessons. In 2011 the club secured its own base in Coldharbour ward.

Since the stables opened, more than 1,000 children have learnt to ride in Brixton.

Natasha Williams, 19, showed the duchess around the centre and said it was “amazing” to meet her.

“Today made me realise how much she cares,” said Natasha, who started riding lessons at Ebony aged 14 and is now studying for a BSc in equine performance and business management at Writtle University College.

“She asked me about my studies and we spoke about what Ebony Horse Club has done for young people like me.”

During the celebrations, the duchess heard about the pony racing scheme, which the club is taking part in, and was given an Equicizer demonstration (pictured) by one of the members under the watchful eye of former Cheltenham director Edward Gillespie.

Other members took part in a drill ride and the Duchess was introduced to Spin and then visited Allegra’s paddock where she met Shetland Pedro, of “Pedroscope” fame.

“Natasha did an amazing job,” said Letty Porter, Ebony Horse Club’s engagement and funding manager.

“We really wanted to push our young people forward to give them the opportunity to speak to the duchess and to tell her about what they have been up to and learning.”

The riding centre is an Olympic legacy project and has been supported by a number of funders, including Sport England and the British Equestrian Federation.

“Having our president, the Duchess of Cornwall, here marking our 21st birthday allowed our young Brixton riders to shine,” said chair of trustees, Susan Collins.

“The duchess has grown up around horses, so understands as much as anyone the joy and value of being around horses. The charity has changed many young lives.”

An inner city stables is to be given £240,000 of Sport England funding.

Ebony Horse Club (EHC), a community equestrian centre in Brixton, London, will receive £80,000 a year over three years.

The funding means the club can offer activities in addition to its core services, which are used by 400 children and young people a year.

The club, established in 1996, uses horses to improve the education, life skills and aspirations of young people from disadvantaged south London communities.

In August, H&H reported on a collaboration between EHC and the Pony Racing Authority to give children a chance to race-ride.

Based next to Loughborough Junction, the centre’s home is within the top 10% most deprived areas in England and Wales.

The club’s “Raising our Games” project focuses on youngsters aged 14 and over who struggle to frequently take part in sport.

The centre plans to introduce other sports that are not normally found in schools or leisure centres.

“We see daily how horse riding increases confidence and self-esteem and with this funding we will be able to reach out to more young people by offering a range of activities,” said Ebony’s Davinia Robinson.

Letty Porter, also from the charity, told H&H they have not yet finalised what the activities will be, but they are intending to stick to the theme of non-traditional sports.

“Bike polo seems to be a very popular option so far,” she added.

“Raising our Games” was launched in the summer holidays when a mobile climbing wall was installed by the club in Wyck Gardens, next to the Loughborough Estate.

In total, 137 young people climbed over 4,000 times.

The project is one of more than 40 to secure a share of the £8.2m National Lottery funding from Sport England.

Sport England’s director of community sport, Mike Diaper, said it is great to be working with “innovative projects” like EHC.

“Given the overwhelming benefits of being active, it’s important that age, gender, or income never prevent anyone from taking part,” he said.

Aspiring jockeys from South London are preparing to have their first taste of racing.

The Pony Racing Authority (PRA) has teamed up with Ebony Horse Club (EHC) in Brixton to give children a chance to learn to race-ride.

EHC is an inner-city charity that offers young people an opportunity to learn to ride and care for horses.

Based between tower blocks and a railway line in Coldharbour, the charity provides access to horses for more than 160 youngsters a week.

“We work with young, disadvantaged children and our aim is to open up life for them,” said Linda Hinds of the charity.

In May, EHC members visited Lingfield races, where they were given a behind the scenes tour and also presented prizes.

“Two weeks later, Clarissa Daly [PRA chief executive] got in touch with us to see if some of our members would be interested in pony racing,” Linda told H&H.

“We thought ‘this is really exciting’.”

Four young members aged between 11-14 years old have been chosen to take part in the scheme.

The aim is for them to compete in their first race in the spring on one of the charity’s ponies.

Julie and Patrick Scott from Appletree Stud in Banbury kick-started the training session in Brixton at the beginning of the summer holidays.

As well as mounted training, the youngsters have been strengthening their muscles using space hoppers and balance boards.

Ollie McPhail, the British Horseracing Education and Standards Trust’s lead education officer, also ran an Equicizer training session for members.

“They are loving it – absolutely loving it,” said Linda.

“It is another opportunity for them. We do quite a lot with them, they have been doing quite a bit of polo over the summer.”

On Tuesday (18 August) the young jockeys and ponies put their skills into practice on a gallops for the first time at Parwood Equestrian Centre in Guildford, Surrey.

The PRA runs a similar scheme at Appletree Stud near Banbury, Oxon, which started two years ago.

The idea behind it is to provide children who otherwise would not be able to try pony racing to have a go.

“From that, we then realised we could also take the scheme into inner cities,” chief executive of the PRA Clarissa Daly told H&H.

She added this gives more children the opportunity to try pony racing who might not have had the chance before.

“We are looking to show children that there is a whole wealth of jobs they can do in racing,” she said.

The programme started at EHC in July and is also running at St James City Farm in Gloucester.

Both centres have been provided with an Equicizer for the children to practice on over the winter.

The schemes are funded by the PRA with money from the British Horseracing Authority and the department for culture, media and sport.

Turn right out of Brixton tube, right again at Foot Locker – burnt out during the August riots – travel half a mile along the road, and there, sandwiched between tower blocks and a railway line, one of Britain’s most unusual riding schools is taking shape.

The new 20x40m man ¨ge and row of boxes with eight alert heads looking out is the culmination of nine years’ fundraising by Ebony Riding Club.

The club caters for children from Brixton’s Coldharbour ward, one of the most deprived boroughs in the country.

Lessons are free if parents are on benefits; others pay £6 for a half-hour.

Ros Spearing founded the club in 1996. “It’s been a monumental effort to get here,” she said. “The challenge now is to keep it going.”

The riding school will cost about £200,000 a year to run, but Ms Spearing said the benefits are immeasurable.

“None of these children would have any opportunity to ride if it wasn’t for us,” she said. “It gives them a sense of achievement and a healthy outdoor activity.”

Instructor Julian White agrees. “It teaches them about nurturing and responsibility,” he said.

“If you don’t fill your pony’s water bucket before you go home, he won’t get a drink tonight – it’s that taking responsibility they get here that can be lacking at home.”

Chloe Alleyne, 13, told H&H that the riding school has made a huge difference to her life.

“It’s like an escape from home and my little sisters,” she said. “I can get here in under two minutes – and groom before school.”

Meanwhile, 15-year-old Shanice Reid is hoping to join the Ebony alumni who have gone on to horsey careers.

“We’ve sent two to the National Racing School and two to Plumpton College,” said Ms Spearing.

A group of children from London received an early Christmas present yesterday (Wednesday, 15 December) when they were taken to Olympia, The London International Horse Show.

International fashion designer Reem Acra, new sponsor of the FEI World Cup Dressage, invited the children from Brixton’s Ebony Horse Club to experience the magic of dressage while enjoying dinner in the sponsor’s hospitality suite.

The group also met World Equestrian Games silver medallist Laura Bechtolsheimer.

“Coming here tonight is the best Christmas present ever,” said 15-year-old, Ronny Jacome.

“I felt like royalty for the night and feel really privileged to have met Laura who was so encouraging to us.”

Reem Acra added: “We were delighted to be able to give these children a wonderful experience like this, especially in the lead-up to Christmas. The work that Ebony Horse Club does is truly inspirational and we were pleased that we could support them in some small way.”

Ebony Horse Club aims to improve the life skills, education and aspirations of children and young people growing up in deprived communities in Brixton, South London, by encouraging them to take part in horse sport.

Two British winners were among equestrian heroes honoured at the FEI Awards ceremony in Taipei last week.

The awards recognise outstanding dedication to horse sport and the winners were announced on 5 November.

The Ebony Horse Club, a riding club based in Brixton that helps disadvantaged children, received the Alltech development award.

And British groom Michelle Tipper, who worked as travelling groom from Nicky Barrett before turning freelance, was named best groom.

World Equestrian Games triple gold medallists Edward Gal and Totilas were named the winners of the Reem Acra best athlete award, US dressage rider Caroline Roffman received the HSBC rising star award and German paradressage rider Angelika Trabert won the against all odds award.

“The nominations we received for the 2010 FEI Awards once again demonstrated that the equestrian community counts many heroes,” said FEI secretary general Alex McLin.

“It is an honour for the FEI to acknowledge the achievements and dedication of five people, and a horse, whose work on the equestrian stage or behind the scenes has contributed to highlighting the greatness of our sport or making it accessible.”

Sport England has donated £600,000 of National Lottery Funding to London riding charity the Ebony Horse Club.

The funds will go towards a new £1.75million riding centre in the south London district of Brixton.

The Ebony Horse Club was set up 15 years ago by Ros Spearing.

“I saw the need to occupy the local children,” said Ros, now director of Ebony Horse Club.

“I was a rider, and wanted to take them riding. It was just five of children to begin with, but they loved it so much and tried so hard that it just grew.”

Since then, the Ebony Horse Club has taught riding to hundreds of children in the London district of Brixton, despite the hindrance of never owning riding facilities.

The aim is to open the centre in time for the 2012 Olympics, to become part of the equestrian Olympic Legacy Project.

Campaigners have so far raised £1.2 million, and are awaiting news on a further £400,000. They are searching for donors for the remaining £150,000.

Tessa Jowell, MP for Brixton, said: “My congratulations and admiration go to everyone at Ebony Horse Club who have argued, cajoled, persuaded and campaigned to bring an equestrian centre to Brixton.”

Contributions to a London riding charity have dropped after a £200,000 cash injection from the British Equestrian Federation (BEF).

The BEF’s Hoof project, to create a lasting equestrian legacy after the London 2012 Olympics, announced its donation to the Ebony Horse Club in Brixton last December (news, 24 December 2009).

“We are very grateful to the BEF, but people have got the impression that we are sorted — it was not stressed that it was only a small proportion of the money we need to raise,” said Rose Spearing, Ebony’s development manager.

The charity needs to raise £1.75m to build a riding centre in Brixton.

With the Hoof money, it has £400,000 and bids for £1m are being considered by Sport England and other funds.

Hoof London manager David Gadsby said: “Endorsement from the national federation shows Ebony is an organisation that should be supported.”
