Going out with your local pack and wondering what to wear out hunting? If you haven’t been hunting before, one thing you don’t want to be worrying about is looking the part. Follow our tips and you’ll be smart, comfortable and look like you’ve been going for years.

The main thing to bear in mind before you go hunting is that it can be a fairly long day, so for maximum enjoyment you need to be warm and comfortable.

It is far more important to be clean, tidy and safe than to buy any additional clothing that you may not wear again.

There are some specifics when it comes to hunting turnout – for you and your horse – but the general rule of thumb is to dress along similar lines to if you were going to a competition (minus any bling) and take pride in how smart you look. It’s highly unlikely you’ll be turned away if you get it wrong – especially if you look like you’ve really made an effort. If there’s anything you’re still unsure about after reading this guide, contact your hunt’s secretary and they’ll be more than happy to help.

What to wear for autumn hunting

If you’re going before your pack’s opening meet (usually around late October/early November), you should follow the dress code for autumn hunting. This dress code is also suitable for autumn hound exercise, which is a great introduction to hunting.

For you:

• tweed jacket (also known as ratcatcher)
• shirt with appropriate collar (depending on whether you have a stock or tie)
• coloured stock or tie (like this one) – Pony Club members can wear Pony Club ties
• pale breeches
• short boots and gaiters/half-chaps or long boots – make sure they’re clean
• dark riding gloves (brown looks best with tweed, but really any colour will be fine)
• riding hat – with a dark hat silk if you have a jockey skull
• hairnet (like this one)

For your horse: 

• plain saddle-shaped numnah in black or brown
• clean correctly fitted tack
• unplaited – but tidy – mane
• coloured ribbon in tail if necessary (red = liable to kick, green = young horse, white = for sale)

What to wear out hunting

In the season proper (opening meet onwards), there are a few changes to the dress code.

For you:

• black or navy wool hunting coat, but if you’re unlikely to go regularly a plain, dark show jacket will be fine (just add an extra base layer under your shirt)
• shirt with stock collar
• light-coloured stock (like this one) – Pony Club members can wear Pony Club ties
• pale breeches – waterproof breeches are a bonus, and dark are acceptable if that’s all you have
• short boots and gaiters/half-chaps or long boots – make sure they’re clean
• riding gloves – again, waterproof a bonus
• riding hat – with a dark hat silk if you have a jockey skull
• hairnet (like this one)

For your horse:

• plain saddle-shaped numnah in black or brown
• clean correctly fitted tack
• coloured ribbon in tail if necessary (red = liable to kick, green = young horse, white = for sale)

Can you wear a body protector out hunting?

Yes, you may wear a body protector, and if you would like to wear an air jacket, do so. They are both becoming more commonplace on the hunting field. You should also wear a suitable riding helmet (with a dark navy/black silk if you have a jockey skull).

Do I need to plait for hunting?

Plaiting is not expected for autumn hunting, or for native breeds. It is traditional to plait from the opening meet and during the main hunting season. However, it is never compulsory to do so.

The unique appeal of the bloodhound dog breed lies in its extraordinary scenting abilities and distinctive physical characteristics. Nicknamed the “sleuth hound”, they are renowned for possessing the keenest sense of smell among all dog breeds. Bloodhounds are often employed in tracking and search-and-rescue operations. It is the only breed whose evidence is admissible in court to match crime scene findings to criminals. They’re also used in drag hunting or “hunting the clean boot”.

Their long, droopy ears and loose, wrinkled skin give them a striking appearance, while their soulful, expressive eyes add to their charm. Despite their somewhat solemn demeanour, bloodhounds are known for their gentle and friendly nature. They have a naturally docile, patient and loyal temperament.

The historical and cultural significance of the bloodhound adds to its allure. The breed’s lineage can be traced back centuries, and its use in tracking and trailing has been well-documented throughout history. This rich heritage, combined with the bloodhound’s versatility whether as a working dog or a devoted companion, attracts those who appreciate a breed with a storied past, unwavering loyalty, and an exceptional aptitude for scent detection. While most of us aren’t involved in gathering crime scene evidence or search-and-rescue, for those who have these marvellous hounds in their home, you can join in with bloodhound working trials for those who enjoy a challenge and want to let their bloodhound’s talent shine.

Bloodhound dog breed: fact file

Size: large

Daily exercise: more than two hours a day

Coat: short, shedding

Colours: black and tan, liver, liver and tan, red. Dark brown or hazel eyes.

Lifespan: less than 10 years

Bark: loud and vocal

History: the breed has been developed in Britain since the 12th century, and its origins may go back even earlier to the St Hubert monastery in Belgium. The bloodhound was originally used to hunt deer and wild boar, but also in tracking humans, to chase thieves and raiders in the middle ages. Bloodhounds were used to prevent the St Hubert breed on the Continent from going extinct, and they are now considered to be the same breed.

Distinctive features: long, substantial, yet narrow, the bloodhound has a noble and dignified appearance, with a long, narrow head and a solemn, wise and powerful expression. Loose skin, powerful and strong physique with swinging movement. Long, soft ears falling in elegant folds.

Temperament: affectionate, reserved and sensitive, never aggressive either to humans or other dogs. They may look lazy with their droopy ears and saggy skin, but they are full of energy and stamina and love the outdoors.

Things to consider: in common with other large, deep-chested dogs, bloodhounds can experience the potentially fatal condition of bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus), when the stomach twists.

Their long ears need to be checked frequently for any signs of infection, as well as the wrinkles on their body daily.

They are indiscriminate eaters, so find out what foods are harmful to dogs and be careful to hide away anything that is inappropriate or toxic. Remember how tall they are, and therefore their reach once on their hindlegs.

They tend to drool, which is off-putting for some potential dog owners.

As they are a substantial dog, one of the best large breed puppy foods is advisable, and – of course – they’ll need one of the best beds for large dogs.

Training: as a brilliant, independent and determined working scent hound, bloodhounds need professional and consistent training to bring out the best in them. Remember that they have been bred to be a working dog, and need plenty of exercise and stimulation or they can develop destructive habits and love to help themselves to things to eat.

If you’re new to hunting or buying for someone but don’t hunt yourself, you might be surprised to learn there are a number of features that promote what you might think is an average hip flask to one of the best hip flasks. Daring side-saddle enthusiasts are being invited to enter a newly launched hunt scurry that will take place over a 2.5-mile course this autumn.

The Staff College Drag Hunt, based at Sandhurst, Berks, is organising the race, which will also feature an open (astride) and a junior class.

“The last two seasons have been a bit of a disaster for hunts, with terrible weather followed by Covid, so we are working hard to fundraise,” said organiser Rebecca Hathaway-White, who has hunted side-saddle for the past 12 years.

“I wanted to see something aimed at side-saddlers as well as catering for the astride rider as we have a fantastic following of both ladies and gents who regularly follow the hunt tackling both hedges and timber with huge amounts of style throughout the season. So with this in mind we decided to run a hunt scurry and have put together a really jumpable course.”

The scurry is due to take place at Loddon Court Farm on 12 September, over a course made up of natural timber fences and hedges, and numbers will be restricted to 15 entries per class.

Side-saddlers already on the entries list include Bruce Langley-McKim, who will be riding his Cleveland Bay stallion Pembridge Justice, and Roger Edmunds, who previously garnered attention for hunting in a side-saddle while his leg was in a plaster cast.

The schedule will also include a 90cm inter-hunt relay, open to teams from hunts, Pony Club branches or riding clubs.

Scotland’s new drag hunt — the Highland Drag — has been forced to fold before it even began, due to allegations of neglect of hounds and the arrest of its huntsman.

Paul Lawrence joined the hunt in May, but turned out to be on the run from Thames Valley Police. He was arrested on 22 June in relation to a series of fraud offences across Oxfordshire and Berkshire and is in custody awaiting trial.

Officers from the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) were called to a property in Dores by the hunt’s joint secretary Moira McCallum the same day.

Miss McCallum told H&H: “Paul had told me that the four hounds, which were being looked after by another person, needed rehoming.

“I was to meet him at the kennels but when he didn’t turn up — I later found he’d been arrested — I went in.

“Their pens hadn’t been cleaned and they had been given great buckets of food, as if that was to keep them going for days before someone would go back to them.”

She decided to call in the welfare charity.

Scottish SPCA chief inspector Iain Allan added: “Our inspectors found the kennels to be filthy, therefore we arranged to have the dogs moved to a more suitable environment. This is now complete and no further action will be taken.”

A spokesman for the charity added that the hounds had not been found in a poor condition — they seemed well-fed and healthy — but the conditions in which they were being kept were deemed unsuitable.

Joint-master of the Highland Drag Georgie Rutherford told H&H: “It has been a very sorry episode. We put our trust in someone, and they have let us down so badly. The Highland Drag Hunt has now been officially disbanded.

“The remaining six couple of hounds are here with me at our home farm, and are being kennelled and exercised properly. And we are open to any inspection.”

The Highland Drag had been due to hold its inaugural opening meet this September and had applied to join the Masters of Draghounds and Bloodhounds Association.

Scottish hunting supporters, tired of eight-hour round trips to meets, have set up a new drag hunt in the Highlands.

The Highland Drag hunt will hold its opening meeting in September and is currently advertising for a huntsman.

“I can’t wait for the new season,” said committee member Sheree Dobson. “I used to hunt with the Fife and the Kingdom Drag, both of which are a four-hour lorry ride away.”

The Highland territory is vast, covering all the country north of Inverness except for a small area around Huntly where a private pack operates.

Joint-master Georgie Rutherford said: “Having a hunt up here is going to make so much difference. Hounds arrived last week from Michael Hughes, who was master of the Kyre.

“We have seven and a half couple and a very naughty puppy that’s busy tearing his walker’s house apart.”

Hounds will be kennelled on the Black Isle, six miles from Inverness.

Ms Rutherford said they have had fantastic support from locals. And a horse trials and country fair have asked them to visit.

Chairman of the Masters of Draghounds and Bloodhounds Association (MDBA) Pat Sutton said: “The Highland have applied to become MDBA members. Their application will be considered at our next board meeting in June.”

She said the last pack to be formed was the West Wales Farmers’ Bloodhounds in 2008.

The Highland Drag hounds will be at Burgie International Horse Trials on Sunday, 20 June.

What exactly is drag hunting?

A runner is used to lay a scent about 20 minutes in advance of the hunt. The days when the scent was laid with aniseed are long gone. Nowadays a chemical crystal, mixed with water and oil, is used. The runner simply dips a cloth in the scent mixture and trails it along the ground behind him. The scent, repulsive to humans, is irresistible to hounds – though bloodhounds follow the human scent of the runner.

What is the difference between drag hunts that use Foxhounds and those that use Bloodhounds?

Drag hunts use a variety of hounds, including Foxhounds (a distinct breed) and Bloodhounds. Bloodhounds track a human runner, while other hounds follow a chemical scent. Aficionados say Foxhounds may be a little faster – although the sight of a pack of bloodhounds in full cry is one not to be missed.

Who is in charge during a drag hunt?

There is a field master who leads the riders, and a huntsman and several whippers-in who are in control of the hounds. Some hunt staff wear traditional red coats, while others have developed their own ‘uniforms’.

Who is drag hunting suitable for?

Drag hunting is all about jumping, so if you are a novice, you will be out of your depth. Young children are not encouraged for the same reason (although some hunts do have special Christmas children’s days). However, there is no lower age limit, and if a child or teenager is capable of safely handling a sharp gallop and some cross-country jumping, they will be welcomed. Some days are more strenuous than others, however, so it’s worth ringing the hunt secretary to decide on a day that suits your ability.

How many hounds are there?

The Staff College and RMAS Drag Hunt uses eight couple (pairs); other drag hunts have up to 15. The packs are smaller than those used for fox hunting, which usually use 17 couple.

How are the hounds trained to follow the scent?

It’s in the dogs’ nature to pick up and follow a scent, and it takes a hound only a day or so to get the idea.

What happens if the dogs pick up the scent of a fox or deer?

The whippers-in must stop them giving chase.

What sort of horse do you need?

Most drag hunters have their own horses, although some hunts may be able to put you in touch with riding schools that can hire you a mount. Horses – and riders – must be comfortable jumping fences of up to around 4ft. Although the field master will warn you about compulsory fences before each line, and give you the opportunity to sit them out, it defeats the object of the hunt to go through a full day without jumping anything.

How is a drag hunting day usually structured?

The day is divided into three or four ‘lines’. The hunt meets and then hacks to the start of the first line. On the signal of the master, the hounds are unleashed. Once they are moving, the hunt follows along a prearranged course, with built fences, for up to two miles. At the end of the line there is a pause to allow the riders to retrench, followed by a short hack to the start of the next line. Some people liken it to taking part in three or four hunter trials in an afternoon.

What drag hunting etiquette should I know about?

First and foremost: stay behind the field master. Overtaking him is a serious offence, and could put hounds in danger. Otherwise, keep out of the way of your fellow riders, behave courteously, and if your horse refuses a fence, get out of the way fast to let others take their turn. If your horse tends to kick, you must tie a red ribbon in its tail and give others a wide berth. If it is a novice and you don’t know how it will react to the hunt, tie a green ribbon in its tail.

How much does it cost?

The cost varies between hunts. Most will allow you to attend for a single day at a cost of around £40. A full annual subscription costs around £360 (this allows you to hunt each weekend plus at occasional midweek meets). There is a nominal cap for each meet, usually around £5, to help with the cost of building fences. In general drag hunting is cheaper than fox hunting, for which annual subscriptions are usually around £1,000.

Why do farmers allow drag hunts on their land?

Drag hunting offers no pest-control service to farmers, and they are not paid for the use of their land. However, many drag hunts have been hunting in the area for generations, so relations are warm between them and hunt staff, and most farmers are happy to play host. The hunt builds and repairs its own jumps, liaises closely with farmers when planning its seasons, and expects its riders to behave scrupulously at all times.

Who goes drag hunting?

All sorts of people. From computer experts and company directors, to mechanics and landscape gardeners, there is a huge mixture. Ages range from young teenagers to sixty-somethings, and the split between men and women tends to be quite evenly matched.

What about foot followers?

Drag hunts do attract foot followers, and may designate a field master to make sure they get to the best vantage points on each line. There are not as many as on a fox hunt.

How many drag hunts are there in the UK?

Bloodhounds hunt the “clean boot” – the fresh scent of a runner following a predetermined line. An average day’s hunting consists of three or four lines of up to 30 fences, covering up to 20 miles in total.

The Farmers Bloodhounds were established in 1989 to complement foxhunting across the Midlands, rather than replace it.

The hunt’s country stretches from Northamptonshire, through Warwickshire and Worcestershire and down into the Cotswolds. Terrain varies, but most days are on grass.

The FMD crisis almost caused the hunt to be disbanded due to financial difficulties, but a rescue plan was put together and the pack is now owned by the Tutton family. Jan Hutton, a successful local businesswoman, supports the hunt financially and is hon joint secretary and treasurer.

Jan’s son Graham is huntsman and the mastership is headed by Warwickshire hunt stalwart Sue Busby, plus Grafton farmer Brian Temple and former point-to-point rider Andy Tutton.

“The next step is to increase our membership,”says Jan. “We have a children’s meet and houndexercise meets and a social calendar throughout the year including a point-to-point, so there is something for everyone.

“To avoid a clash with foxhunting, meets are held on Sundays, and we are careful not to hunt in the same area Foxhounds have crossed that week.”

“Anyone coming out with the Farmers Bloodhounds is always made extremely welcome and we give people the opportunity to ride to hounds over some of the best hunting country in England,” says Andy Tutton.

“However, it is always made very clear by the masters that supporting the Bloodhounds is to support other country sports – foxhunting, shooting, point-to-point, fishing etc.

“It is essential that all of us who enjoy the country way of life stick together in these times of political correctness.”
