First Black British female jump jockey hopes to inspire others to achieve their dreams

Aamilah Aswat made her racing dream a reality and became the first ever Black British female jump jockey to ride in Britain, coming fifth on her professional debut yesterday (10 November).

The 19-year-old conditional jockey, who learnt to ride at a city equestrian centre, partnered Guchen for trainers Kim Bailey and Mat Nicolls, and owners Friends of Ebony Horse Club, in the JCB Handicap Hurdle at Kempton Park on Monday.

“I can’t believe that my dream to race has finally come true. I couldn’t ask for a better horse – Guchen gave me such a great feeling and I will remember this day for ever,” said Aamilah.

“I just wanted to get round safely and repay the trust that Kim and Mat have had in me. I am so grateful to them and the owners, the Friends of Ebony Horse Club, for giving me this opportunity.”

Aamilah grew up in Gloucester and first learned to ride at St James’s City Farm, under the tutelage of Imran Atcha, and competed in pony races in 2017 and 2018 with the Pony Racing Authority.

She joined the Riding A Dream Academy’s inaugural Khadijah Mellah Scholarship programme in 2021-22, where she was sponsored by The Jockey Club.

The Riding A Dream Academy is part of the British Racing School and aims to support young people from diverse ethnic backgrounds, disadvantaged communities and urban equestrian centres get involved in British horseracing. It is inspired by Khadijah, who was the first British Muslim woman to ride in and win a British race when she won the 2019 Magnolia Cup charity race at Goodwood. The Khadijah Mellah Scholarship is a year-long programme for talented riders, supported by Goodwood racecourse

After the scholarship programme, Aamilah went on to complete the foundation course at the British Racing School and then join the yard of Grand National-winning trainer Kim Bailey.

“I am really proud to be the first Black British female jump jockey. When I was growing up I looked up to Khadijah and I hope that now other young people will look up to me as well and know that they can also reach their dreams,” she said.

Khadijah, who is also one of the co-founders of the Riding A Dream Academy, said she has watched Aamilah progress over the years and “could not be more excited and proud to see her race”.

“She is a brilliant role model for the other Riding a Dream Academy students. Visibility is so important and I am excited for her to have the opportunity to display her talent and hard work,” she said.

“Huge thanks to Kim Bailey, Mat Nicholls and their team and also the Friends of Ebony for facilitating this huge day. It is a privilege to support the next generation and Aamilah is the future of talent in horse racing.”

Naomi Lawson, co-founder of the Riding A Dream Academy, said: “Representation really matters and what we’re seeking to do at the Riding A Dream Academy is ensure that young people from diverse ethnic communities have the chance to shine in the sport.

“Only around two to three percent of licensed jockeys come from these communities, far below the national average, so we hope that Aamilah is the first of many to come through the ranks and succeed in the sport.

“None of these things happen without a huge number of people and we are so grateful to our funders the Racing Foundation, the staff at the Riding A Dream Academy and British Racing School and the team at Kim Bailey’s for making today possible.”

Turning words into action to ensure everyone can enjoy the horse world

The second year of British Equestrian’s (BEF) diversity and inclusion action plan is about “turning words into tangible action and results”.

The BEF has officially launched year two of its plan, which sets out objectives and actions for the next 12 months.

“This ‘road map’ is vital as we and our 20 member bodies continue a long-term commitment to building a more inclusive and equitable equestrian community,” a BEF spokesperson said, adding that it builds on initiatives from the first year, guided by the BEF’s “Horses For All” strategy launched in late 2023.

The spokesperson said the strategy’s core aim is to make inclusion reality every day, at every level.

It aims to give “every individual the opportunity to thrive, regardless of background with a clear vision of an equestrian community truly representative of society, where everyone feels valued, safe and a strong sense of belonging”.

BEF CEO Jim Eyre added that the team is very proud of the progress made so far, which has “motivated us to continue to drive our work forward”.

“This year-two plan deepens our commitment to systemic change by setting out clear, measurable steps we are taking to ensure inclusion becomes part of our everyday thinking and practice,” he said. “This plan is about turning words in a strategy into tangible actions and results – it’s about creating structures and environments where everyone can access and feel they belong in equestrian sport.”

Highlights include new learning materials, a rulebook for all in the industry, inclusive training and improved data collection and tracking.

Steps taken to ensure everyone can enjoy horses’ magic

Everyone should be able to be part of equestrianism and feel valued.

This is the message behind British Equestrian’s (BEF) new diversity and inclusion action plan, which it said is a “crucial step towards ensuring a more inclusive and equitable future for equestrian sport”. The move comes as universities and colleges have joined forces to increase diversity on equestrian and land-based courses.

The BEF plan was inspired by its “horses for all” research, and aims to “address barriers to taking part and promote diversity within British Equestrian, our member bodies and across the wider equestrian sector as well as British Equestrian as a business organisation”.

“Everyone, regardless of their background, should have the opportunity to participate in equestrianism and feel welcomed and valued,” said BEF head of participation and development Mandana Mehran Pour.

“Our plan is a vital step in ensuring that the equestrian sector continues to grow as an inclusive sport, where anyone can experience the incredible relationship that can be built between horse and human, as well as benefiting from the activity and environment.”

The strategy is aimed at creating, it states: “An equestrian community that is truly representative of society, where everyone feels valued, safe and a strong sense of belonging.”

The plan sets out the actions needed to achieve aims in six key areas: leadership and governance, data and diversity indicators, workforce, participation and collaboration, education and accountability, and communication and engagement.

“The horses for all research, which laid the foundation for this action plan, highlighted the need for improved accessibility, representation and opportunities for underrepresented groups within equestrianism,” Ms Mehran Pour said. “We are committed to working with our member bodies and the community to provide equitable opportunities for those who might be underrepresented in our sport.”

She added that the member bodies have been “actively engaged” and the BEF will work with them to develop their own plans.

A BEF spokesperson said: “British Equestrian invites the entire community to join in this journey towards a more inclusive future, where diversity is celebrated, and everyone has the opportunity to participate and succeed.”

As part of the drive to increase the diversity of UK equestrianism, a new guidebook has been released by BLOC (BERF Landex Outreach Collaboration), a collaboration between Hartpury University, Landex educational institutions and the British Ethnic Riders Federation.

“The project aims to enhance diversity and inclusivity in land-based education by opening the doors to more rural campuses, breaking down barriers to participation, and promoting fair access to higher education,” a Hartpury spokesperson said.

“It is hoped that the guide will encourage its target audience, community groups, to explore the outreach activities, engagement programmes and support services offered by members of the BLOC project.”

The guidebook covers the range of associated outreach activities and events across UK university centres.

Hartpury head of inclusivity Linda Greening said: “Historically, participation in subjects including agriculture, animal and equine sciences has been predominantly white, largely due to perceptions of applicants from the global majority.

“This project has sought to address some of those perceptions by inviting community groups to rural campuses to provide tailor-made experiences that go some way to address the myths surrounding study and career opportunities in these areas of study.”

The project also offers activities including subject taster days, campus tours, career pathway workshops, open days and equine events.

“We hope the activities run because of the BLOC guide will help to raise young people’s awareness of and interest in land-based studies, with the British Ethnic Riders Federation there specifically supporting those who choose to participate in equestrianism,” Ms Greening added.

New scheme to ensure horse sport is available to all

Horse welfare, competition and trying to make sure equestrian sport is for everyone are the central themes of a new British Dressage (BD) urban equestrian centre programme.

BD was “delighted” to welcome the first group of 10 riders on to its pilot scheme, at Summerfield Stables near Birmingham. The group will take part in a six-week training programme at Solihull Riding Club, with which Summerfield has a partnership, led by BD coach Jo Swain. The aim is for the riders to perform a BD test in a competition at the end of the course.

“Aside from learning about dressage and falling in love with the sport, it’s all about improving the confidence of these young people,” said BD project delivery lead Emma Bayliss, who has been instrumental in delivering the scheme.

“The programme gives them the opportunity to learn from our coach, interact with each other and develop valuable life skills that they will be able to take forward into the wider world.”

A BD spokesperson said that one of the organisation’s key principles is making the sport accessible to all by removing barriers to participation.

“Summerfield Stables is a community riding school in the heart of Birmingham, offering an inclusive environment that provides access to horse riding for young people, as well as volunteering opportunities for those keen to learn and care for horses,” she said.

“Their ethos is to give everyone the chance to experience the special bond between horse and human, regardless of age, race, gender or disability, while demonstrating the important role that horses play in society, especially for those who may not be fortunate to be able to learn, interact or engage with equines in their daily lives.”

The initial selection involved people who already ride at Summerfield. A second cohort will follow there, followed by programmes in London and the north-east.

Georgina Urwin, who runs Summerfield Stables, said: “It’s really important that all riders have the same opportunities as those who own their own horses. We want to give this experience to as many young people as possible, so they don’t feel excluded from activities within the equestrian world. We don’t want them to have to deal with a huge financial outlay just to experience affiliated sport.

“The programme has given our students a wonderful opportunity to experience these great facilities and give themselves a chance to shine, showing that they are as good as any other rider. Often, it’s assumed that riding school pupils can’t ride to a good enough level.

“We have a variety of lovely horses and Jo Swain has commented that our riders already work to a high standard – it’s great to have that affirmed, so they can move forward with more self-belief.”

The 10 riders will also be able to complete the first two levels of the BD horse-care programme.

“Awareness of equine welfare is a central tenet, and educating these new students at the very start of their dressage journey will be a major part of the development activities,” the BD spokesperson said.

Phoebe, one of the students who volunteers as well as rides at Summerfield, said horses have had a positive influence on her.

“Horses mean a lot to me – if I’ve had a bad day, I can come to the stables, they reset me and allow me to be OK,” she said.

Britain’s first international Black para rider hopes to break down barriers

Britain’s first international Black para rider hopes to become a role model for others in equestrianism, as the sport continues to work on inclusivity.

Tegan Vincent-Cooke and her own Stolen Kiss contested the CPEDI3* freestyle at Addington last month. Tegan told H&H she hopes to compete at more events at this level and above – and be part of a British team.

“I want to give it my best shot,” she said. “But even getting to where I am shows that you don’t have to be white or middle-class; you can be any level and of any race, we’re all here to enjoy horses and the sport.”

Tegan comes from a non-horsey family, but started riding aged four as it was recommended by her physiotherapist. She started with the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) and went on to become a four-time RDA champion.

“Growing up with no hero, there wasn’t really anyone who looked like me at the top level; I found role models in other sports,” Tegan said, adding that she is often the only person of colour at events or training. And although a great deal of progress has been made in improving diversity and inclusivity, “there’s still lots that could be done”.

She added that there are small issues that could be addressed to remove some barriers, such as competition uniform. It is hard to wear Afro hair in a bun and with a riding helmet, or to wear a stock with a headscarf.

“I wasn’t shocked; this is a very real issue in our sport and other sports,” she told H&H. “As soon as I saw that post, I knew there would be issues but when I looked back, the BEF had posted about Diwali and Hanukkah, and hadn’t got that response. It is an issue and it affects people’s self-confidence.

“If you know people in the sport are thinking things like that, it affects you; if you make a mistake or fall off, you might be more self-conscious, so you don’t put yourself out there. It’s not a level playing field.”

Ms Urwin said this was one aim of a new partnership with Solihull Riding Club, which allows Summerfield riders the chance to take the next step, in a welcoming environment.

Ms Urwin said that during Ramadan, when people fast from sunrise to sunset, some members of Summerfield break their fast together as a community. They also sing carols at Christmas and do trick-or-treating at Halloween.

“We’re trying to bring the community together and have understanding of everyone’s traditions and beliefs,” she said.

“We need to act; our sport is seen as elitist and when negative things happen, it confirms that belief.”

The BEF launched its “Horses for all” strategy at the end of 2023, as the culmination of work designed to improve equality, diversity and inclusion in the industry.

CEO Jim Eyre said at the time: “We recognise our need to do better and this document gives a blueprint to facilitate the positive change needed, and our action plan to generate change will soon be published. It’s our collective mission to encourage more people to engage with horses in a forum free from discrimination where equity is paramount, and we want to underpin our commitment to achieving this with our strategy.”

‘No one else will chase your dreams’: meet the inner-city rider hoping to change lives

A rider who credits horses for changing his life is now hoping to inspire others into the industry – including social media personality James Argent.

Fabian Williams, known as the Blessed Equestrian, grew up in a deprived area of London and first rode at an early age but, his friend Jordan Abankwah told H&H, Fabian was bullied as he did not fit in.

“He didn’t look like the others or talk like them,” Jordan said. “He didn’t feel accepted by the industry; he started hanging around with the wrong people, he was struggling to find his own identity. But things changed. He started engaging with boxing, and found confidence and acceptance, then he found a horse called Apple, who changed his life. Without that horse, I don’t know if he would know who he is.”

“A few weeks ago, he spoke at the National Equine Show, and so many young people came up to him and said they were being bullied, and how hearing his story and what he’d been through made them feel passionate about continuing,” Jordan said. “He wants to improve inclusivity and diversity – and he wants to ride at the Olympics.”

Fabian is also friends with James Argent, who for eight years was a regular on The Only Way is Essex, and has since lost 13 stone; the pair boxed together, and then Fabian invited James to the yard.

“Then James asked to go again, he loved it,” Jordan said. “He said it was great, but his legs were in agony!”

Fabian’s ambitions include representing his country at the Olympics and becoming a five-time gold medallist.

“Believe in yourself and chase your dreams as no one else will be able to chase them for you,” he said. “I want to be the example; I want to be the person that paves the way for other people who thought they couldn’t.”

‘Everyone has the right to shine’ – and how this could benefit the horse world

Everyone has the right to shine – and as an industry it is our duty to provide the opportunity to do so, which could benefit all of us.

This was the message at a session on accessibility, at the National Equine Forum on 7 March. Speakers considered different pathways to ensure everyone is welcome in equestrianism.

First to present was Jane Cooper, managing director of Access & Inclusion UK, whose daughter Megan was born with a rare chromosomal condition.

“That was a real life-changing moment,” she said. “I realised then the extra challenges people face, which I wasn’t aware of. That’s why I do what I do.

“Disabled people want the same things others do from spending time with horses; the emotional and therapeutic benefits, the bond and the physical benefits. There has been a shift in thinking; it used to be that the issue was the individual, now the issue is actually the inaccessible world. If you make changes, you can improve accessibility, so every organisation can make a difference.”

Ms Cooper advised looking at barriers to accessibility and then considering how to take them down, for example having written information for people with hearing impairment and audio equivalents for those with visual impairment.

“You can do things that mean everyone who wants to can have this experience,” she said.

British Equestrian (BEF) head of participation and development Mandana Mehran Pour spoke about the BEF’s #HorsesForAll project, which has included research on barriers to participation and the development of an equality, diversity and inclusion action plan.

“The biggest barrier could be your biggest opportunity, and I think that’s important,” she said. “Everyone has the right to shine, and as an industry we have a duty to provide that opportunity. If you believe everyone should have that chance, we all have a role to play in creating a more welcoming environment.”

Ms Mehran Pour said one key point from the BEF’s work is that representation and visual diversity matter to the research participants: “They wanted to see people who looked like them, so we really need role models”.

“Diversity isn’t just the colour of your skin,” she said. “We need to ask questions and better understand the people we communicate with, putting inclusion at the heart of all we do.”

Rebecca Cogswell, director of marketing, communications and fundraising at the British Horse Society (BHS), asked guests why it matters that everyone is welcome.

“Because many times, that unique bond has made a massive difference to people’s lives,” she said. “The bond between people and horses is like no other.”

Ms Cogswell said understanding current and potential audiences is key. She cited BHS research that found that equestrianism is perceived as elitist, and that many saw it as a community to which they could not belong.

“But love for horses unites us all,” she said. “There are strong positives on which we can focus. So how to make the benefits more available to all? We need clear strategies for inclusion. It matters because of the power of the horse-human bond. That’s why it’s so important horses in society continues, we must keep Britain riding and listen to our audience to ensure everyone is welcome to experience it.”

‘Horses for all’: new strategy aims to encourage more people to engage with equines

The new British Equestrian (BEF) “Horses for all” strategy is “crucial to our future relevance”, its creators believe, and to ensuring the industry remains relevant.

The BEF and its 20 member bodies and partners have signed a pledge that states: “Our collective aim is to encourage more people to engage with horses – as a hobby, a sport, a career, a fan or simply wanting to spend time with and around horses. This strategy unites us in our desire, and outlines our inspirations to effect generational, lasting change.”

The diversity and inclusion strategy is the “culmination of an extensive research, listening and learning process, [which] sets the agenda for our long-term commitment to lead change in our industry and foster a culture and environment of everyday inclusion and equity”.

H&H has reported on the BEF’s project to address the barriers to participation, focusing on ethnic minorities and those from a low socio-economic background, the results of research in this area, and the plan to create the strategy that has now been published.

The aim is for the document to be a framework for action plans, which will deliver “meaningful, generational results”, ensuring that equestrianism is reflective of society, relevant in the 21st century, a “safe, respectful and inclusive community with a culture that values and welcomes everyone”, and accessible to people from any background.

Its key strategies cover leadership and governance, data and diversity indicators, the workforce, collaborative working, education and accountability.

BEF CEO Jim Eyre said: “This strategy is fundamental for British Equestrian and our member bodies but even more so for the wider equestrian community; it’s crucial for our future relevance. We recognise our need to do better and this document gives a blueprint to facilitate the positive change needed. It’s our collective mission to encourage more people to engage with horses in a forum free from discrimination where equity is paramount, and we want to underpin our commitment to achieving this with our strategy.”

The BEF has started work on a diversity and inclusion action plan to action the strategy’s objective, and will work with member bodies on their plans.

BEF head of participation Mandana Mehran Pour said: “The genuine enthusiasm and ambition throughout this project has been inspiring and I’m proud of where we’ve got to but now is the time to take responsibility and action to drive the vision forwards. We’ve acknowledged our previous shortcomings but now must seize the opportunities outlined in the strategy to initiate the actions and changes required.

“The BEF team is looking forward to formulating and delivering an action plan, and supporting our member bodies to do the same, which puts us on a path to the vibrant future we collaboratively want to achieve.”

Real progress being made towards increasing equestrianism’s diversity

Real progress is being made to improve the industry’s diversity, as a long-term change that cannot happen overnight.

As British Equestrian (BEF) announced “six months of change, achievement and progress” in its #Horses4All research project on underrepresented communities’ engagement with equestrianism, campaigners for change have told H&H of the progress being made at all levels.

H&H reported last spring on the results of a survey commissioned by the BEF to “discover the barriers to participation in equestrian sport and activity from the perspective of ethnically diverse communities and or those from a low socio-economic background”.

Six months on, the BEF released an update stating that it has made progress with commitments it made in response to the report.

The main action was to create an equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) strategy; an outline of this is under review and it is to be published this year, to act as a blueprint for BEF member bodies or a basis for their own EDI strategies.

The BEF has been working on a diversity and inclusion action plan, which it expects to implement early next year, and is revising its member rulebook to “incorporate elements of #HorsesForAll’s recommendations around conduct and behaviours, alongside other integrity matters”.

“The strategy will help to shape culture and values, and we’re backing that up with an education programme,” a BEF spokesman said, adding that this 18-month programme will be delivered across the BEF and member bodies. Other action includes over £100,000 distributed in financial support, and working with faith and youth groups to promote equestrianism in underrepresented communities.

“The progress by the teams in a relatively short space of time is certainly testament to our collective commitment to tackling inequalities in our industry,” said BEF CEO Jim Eyre.

“While there have been some tangible short-term outcomes, what’s most rewarding is the amount of foundation work completed or commenced, which will ensure the required long-term change. We are under no illusions as to how long this will take, but the progress in six months is hugely encouraging and has set us up well to ensure horses really are for all.”

Ashleigh Wicheard, who was shortlisted in the inspiration of the year and moment of the year categories in the 2022 H&H Awards, having led her fellow jockeys in taking the knee before she won the Magnolia Cup charity race at Goodwood, told H&H that at the awards ceremony, she became aware of sponsor Tommy Hilfiger’s equestrian range. She contacted the brand, and was invited to the Netherlands to model.

“I explained to them that the images they had of people of colour with horses were very casual and riding school,” she said. “What I loved about them was that when I said you don’t often see people of colour in competition wear, they took shots of me like that.”

Ashleigh said such imagery is important, as if young people do not see other people of colour competing, as well as riding, they may not realise this is something they can aspire to.

She has also completed a placement at Racing TV through the Racing Media Academy, and has presented at Goodwood, although she said she would rather have the chance to present behind-the-scenes documentaries on the equestrian world, to appeal to the public as well as insiders.

“Someone at Blenheim asked me about box-ticking, and that people might feel they’re only being asked to do things as they’re people of colour,” she said. “But I thought if you want to make a difference for future generations, it’s all about ticking boxes. I want to represent in as many ways as possible, so young people can have the images and representation, and if ticking boxes is what we need to do, that’s the gateway. You could see it as a negative but I choose to see it as positive. If me doing something ticks someone’s box and a young person can feel, ‘That could be me’, that’s what needs to happen.”

Ashleigh said change will not happen overnight, but things are moving in the right direction.

“Five people will become 10, and then 20,” she said. “But if numbers go up slowly, it’s more likely to be sustainable. I take time off work to do things and fund them myself but that’s my purpose and I’m happy to do it as it’s making a difference. Slow and steady wins the race.”

Sandra Murphy, who set up the group BERF, the British Ethnic Riders Foundation, told H&H she is in the process of registering the group as a community interest company, to allow fundraising for its plans to help riders from diverse backgrounds progress in the industry. The group’s plans for a residential training centre for these riders are still in progress, and Sandra has been working with the BEF and the Pony Club on EDI.

“Everything is ramping up and it’s all good,” she said. “Things are starting to happen and we’re getting fantastic feedback from different sectors.”

Sandra said BERF hosted a training weekend this summer; sisters Shanice and Sheneka Reid from Ebony Horse Club in Brixton spent time with her, riding her stallion Monet for training with a British Eventing accredited coach, and competing at a showjumping competition where both riders were placed.

Sandra has long said that progression is key; riders who may have learned at urban riding schools then need the opportunity to progress to the next stage to allow them to move up further.

“The girls rode Monet beautifully and it was so good,” she said. “It showed what they could do with a level playing field; a competition horse and good training and access to competition was all it took. Sheneka burst into tears when she found out she’d won; we all cried like babies.”

Sandra said the training and the centre are key to giving riders the opportunities they need.

“As a Black person, coming into the industry can be daunting as there’s no one who looks like you,” she said. “We’re going to bring this forward, we’re going to help.”

‘Exciting opportunity’ for real change in our industry

A REPORT on under-represented communities within equestrianism is an “exciting” opportunity to make real, lasting change in the industry, it is hoped.

British Equestrian (BEF) commissioned major research last year, aiming to “discover the barriers to participation in equestrian sport and activity from the perspective of ethnically diverse communities and or those from a low socio-economic background”.

AKD Solutions, which carried out the research, made recommendations on how the industry should act, and as a result, the BEF has set out its short-, medium- and long-term commitments.

“Everyone wants this to happen,” BEF head of participation Mandana Mehran Pour told H&H. “The interest is there and that’s the most important part; we all want to do this and we’re going to find out how.”

AKD was asked to speak to 800 people, Black, Asian and from other ethnicities, and those from “under-served” communities, to learn more about perceptions, engagement and interest in equestrianism, and understand the barriers to it. It included a nationwide survey, interviews, forums and equestrian experience days.

Headline results included that 46% of respondents would take part in, or consider taking part in, equestrian activity. Some participants felt the industry could learn from the increasing inclusivity of racing, and from the impact of money invested in young Black and Asian talent.

Factors that would increase participation were found to be seeing more participants like themselves, more available information about equestrian activities, taster sessions and promotional material featuring “people like me”. More affordable equestrian activities was also a factor. Barriers were named as lack of awareness of such activity and affordability.

One mixed-heritage participant said that with her heritage and “class connotations that are inextricably linked with the sport”, she did not believe she could belong. A Black respondent said not seeing top riders who “look like me” was a deterrent, and a mixed-heritage respondent had ridden once, as the only non-white person there, and “did not feel welcomed”.

“She stands out because she isn’t white,” one Asian equestrian wrote. “We notice the additional criticism we face because we’re not white; we have to work harder, be better.” Incidents of bullying and racialised experiences emerged.

“People may feel racism or bullying every day, and everywhere,” Ms Mehran Pour said. “We know we have to support our industry to be a bit more welcoming and more inclusive to everyone, regardless of background or the colour of their face.”

AKD’s recommendations include a universal commitment to anti-discriminatory equestrian environments, building strong partnerships with alternative structures and diverse spaces, planning generationally and leading from the front on diversity.

“This report presents a huge opportunity to make equestrianism inclusive and more diverse,” the report states in AKD’s reflections. “Through collaborative, targeted and adequately resourced opportunities in less affluent and ethnically diverse communities, the equestrian industry can benefit from wider engagement, more talent and investment.”

The BEF said the report was “a hugely beneficial base” to understand the current situation, and give clear guidance on progressing its equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) strategy.

“It is imperative we see this as a catalyst for driving positive change that will help shape the future of equestrianism,” it states in its response. “We acknowledge that creating meaningful and lasting change will take time but collectively we are committed. This is just the beginning of our journey towards building a more inclusive equestrian community that is reflective of Great Britain.”

The BEF’s commitments are based on the recommendations, and Ms Mehran Pour said: “This is a generational movement.

“In the next 15 years, we will see people from different backgrounds being comfortable, and it will be quite visual. One thing brought up in the report was people not being welcome at riding schools or livery yards, but people from white British backgrounds had the same issues. My aim in 10 years’ time is to have more welcoming environments, whoever you are. That’s my vision.”

Ms Mehran Pour said everyone in the industry can contribute by being more welcoming, but that in the main, the issues raised are “cultural, not equestrian”.

“We’re not alone in this,” she said. “If anyone has had issues, we’re here to listen as unless we know where the problems are, we can’t fix them. And if we do our bit in our sport, we’re doing it for all society. The hope is creating more welcoming, understanding people for society, not just the riding population.”

Another key finding is that all those who had not ridden before and did so for this report “absolutely loved it”.

“It’s the magic of horses,” Ms Mehran Pour said. “People want to be involved but think they can’t for financial reasons or because they don’t see people like them but the latent demand is absolutely essential.”

She added: “This is really exciting and I’m proud of everyone in the federation and member bodies. People want to make the change and that’s the most important thing. If you want to do something, you’ll find a way to do it.”

British Showjumping (BS) CEO Iain Graham told H&H the member bodies will work with the BEF to deliver on all the commitments.

“We’ve all been doing our bit to try to make sure as organisations we’re welcoming to everyone but it’s really useful to have independent recommendations,” he said, adding that BS appointed a director for EDI two years ago, and has plans in this area.

“One of the benefits of our sport is that men and women compete equally so there’s no gender separation,” he said. “But everyone is equal in the horse’s eyes; the horse doesn’t care what your background is.”

British Dressage (BD) CEO Jason Brautigam told H&H BD is committed to ensuring the sport is inclusive and accessible to all.

“We have a lot to celebrate in this regard – men and women compete on an equal basis, with riders from eight to 80 taking part in dressage, while we also have a successful record in disability sport, and strong representation from the LGBTQ+ community,” he said. “However, we acknowledge that equestrianism is not as ethnically diverse as we would want it to be, while there are communities that are currently under-represented and under-served, particularly in less affluent urban areas. There are many socio-economic factors that contribute to this, but we want to break down any barriers that exist to participation and ensure that our sport is welcoming to everyone.

“This report identifies some of the areas where we need to focus our efforts, as well as recognising the strong foundations we can build on. I was personally very heartened by the findings, as it reveals that there is a latent demand to take part in equestrian sport and highlights where there are opportunities to promote dressage to a wider audience. We will work collectively with other member bodies across the federation to address these inequalities and collaborate with groups that have already established excellent initiatives in this area.

“We have set aside designated funds from our reserves specifically for outreach projects to bridge the gaps that currently exist, and the feedback in this report will help us to deliver meaningful, tangible, and long-lasting change.”

British Eventing (BE) CEO Helen West added that BE is committing to “leading from the front and encouraging a culture that actively encourages diversity and inclusivity”.

“BE is proactively developing alignments that can assist us reach these objectives,” she said. “We recently delivered a The Howden Way Academy [BE’s training framework] session to a group of diverse riders from Cool Ridings. It was such an inspiring day, which was a success on so many levels.

“Our focus is unwavering on ensuring that we create a welcoming and nurturing environment for riders from underrepresented groups that have an interest in eventing. We applaud the undertaking of the report, its findings and recommendations.”

Simba Chinyemba of SLC Veterinary Physiotherapy had some concerns about how he would be accepted in a white-dominated industry. Having ridden as a child and a teenager, he considered veterinary medicine as a career but settled on physiotherapy as a middle ground.

“I haven’t really had any bad experience in terms of racism or barriers to opportunities but it crossed my mind a bit,” he said. “A bit of concern about how seriously I’d be taken, but I think it does work to my benefit as people remember me.”

Mr Chinyemba said he hopes he might be able to inspire others into the industry, and recently spoke at an equine careers event at Bishop Burton College.

Pippa Winkworth, co-chair of the National Association of Veterinary Physiotherapy (NAVP), told H&H vet physios have mainly been white females, and the NAVP is keen to attract applicants from all backgrounds.

“Existing NAVP members from ethnic minority groups, who initially felt concerned about the possibility of issues arising about gender or ethnicity, have been pleasantly surprised by how welcoming and open the association, wider industry and the public have been,” she said.

“Anyone is welcome if they are passionate about animal care, veterinary physiotherapy and can meet the requirements of membership. With the recent change of management at NAVP, we are evaluating our equal opportunities and diversity policy, as well as looking at ways we can reach out ethnic minority groups.

“NAVP is committed to and proactive in achieving excellence in equality of opportunity of our members, including all under-represented groups. We want to promote an inclusive culture and we value diversity. One of our core values is freedom from discrimination. All membership will be determined by personal merit and by performance. No student, member of the association, executive team or applicant for admission as a member will be treated less favourably than another because of their belonging to a protected group.”

‘This is what I pray for’: riders’ dreams start to become reality

Young riders from underrepresented communities have enjoyed access to top-class training and taken a step towards their “dreams becoming a reality” thanks to British Eventing (BE) and the Howden Way.

This month 20 Cool Ridings members took part in a BE Howden Way regional training academy, held at the British Showjumping National Training Centre in Leicestershire. Cool Ridings was formed in 2020 by Jamaican event rider Lydia Heywood, to improve diversity and ensure long-term sustainability in equestrian sport, while the Howden Way regional academies are a new BE initiative that provide training to riders “no matter their age or ability”.

The riders, some of whom had competition experience and some who are relatively new to riding and had borrowed horses, were trained by BE level four coach Michael Paveley. The sessions focused on flatwork, a practice trot-up, and showjumping, and a feed and nutrition session was provided by Baileys Horse Feeds.

“I come from a deprived area in London and I haven’t had many opportunities with horses, but I have a passion which has enabled me to create opportunities,” said 18-year-old rider Fabian Williams.

“To have the chance to ride with a BE level four coach feels surreal because coming from Inner London, where there are absolutely no opportunities like this, it felt unreachable, unreal and unimaginable. These are the things I pray for and being able to attend, felt like my dreams were becoming a reality.”

Lydia said Cool Ridings recognises that bringing riders from underrepresented communities together for training creates an “enormous amount of camaraderie and confidence”, which is vital for progressing in equestrian sport.

“I had high expectations for this but the experience certainly went above and beyond them,” she said.

“Michael Paveley made the perfect coach with his kind, wise and well-informed approach. I am overjoyed to witness these academies in action and the spectacular syllabus that was distributed. We are truly very grateful for the opportunities that have been made available to us by BE and the Howden Way.”

Justine Parker, BE head of training and development, said it had been an “inspirational day” and the talent and commitment of the riders had been “exceptional”.

“This is the first academy of its kind that we have run, and it has been an absolute success on so many levels,” she said.

“This absolutely reinforces why we should be delivering days like this for specific groups of riders, who may not normally have had access to our academies which run across the country for our members. By creating a bespoke day to cater for those who were borrowing horses and were perhaps coming to their first ever training day, it allowed them to take on the day confidently without the added pressure they may have felt otherwise.”

Ms Parker added that one of the “core messages” of the Howden Way training structure is that it is to be a “vehicle to deliver safe, governed and top-level training to all riders that may wish to access it”.

“The academies are open to non-members for their first two sessions, and we trust that today’s riders will feel it has given them a stepping stone to move into our national Howden Way regional academies with confidence,” she said.

New ‘vision’ to help diverse young riding talent progress

GREAT strides are being made in improving equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in the equestrian world but more must be – and is being – done.

H&H has reported on work carried out across the UK racing and wider industry, as well as in other areas of rural and agricultural operation.

Sandra Murphy, who set up the BAME Equine and Rural Activities Focus group (BERF), told H&H its members have been working hard behind the scenes, including with universities and colleges offering related courses, and towards Sandra’s vision of a BERACE centre, to offer opportunities for talented young riders from underrepresented communities.

“I wrote the proposal for the centre three years ago and some things in it have changed, but not the concept,” she said.

Sandra explained that the centre is to be the next step for riders, many of whom may have learned at inner-city riding schools but need to go on to gain experience at a higher level.

“We don’t want to take them to elite level as we can’t do that,” she said. “But we can take them, for example, from jumping 70cm or doing prelim dressage to jumping 1.10m or riding at elementary. It’s not just the competition experience they need to have to progress to the next level, it’s everything, and we’re going to try to bridge that gap.”

Sandra said she has had meetings with British Equestrian, and her council has donated time with one of its business development officers. The plan is to develop a community interest company to run and secure funding for the centre, then start with shorter courses. Sandra said a local school has also agreed to be involved, and the long-term aim is to roll the project out across the country.

“It’s the vision, and it still is that but it can start moving forwards now,” she said, adding that she has also been appointed as a Pony Club trustee, and EDI advisor.

“In general, things are starting to change,” she said. “A lot of effort is going in but there needs to be consistency as it’s all a bit fragmented.

“I’m the first Black person to be on the Pony Club board, but I’m still often the only Black person at events. Things aren’t changing at all levels but that takes time. They asked us to do a photoshoot for their ‘join us’ page and we took 15 Pony Club members from ethnic minorities and we had a fantastic time. They got lots of pictures and made a fantastic video, and they’re using some of the pictures to revamp the website.

“On other sites, there is still little representation of young Black people doing the job; we want to work with organisations, and brands, to make progress.

“I need to push this now as if I don’t, it will take years to get the ball rolling, but we can’t do this on our own; we need support.”

Ashleigh Wicheard, a work rider for Neil Mulholland, has been shortlisted for the Equipe moment of the year and HorseDialog inspiration of the year categories in the 2022 H&H awards, for winning the Magnolia Cup at Goodwood.

Before the race, Ashleigh took the knee, and all 11 of her fellow jockeys followed suit.

The long-term campaigner for increasing diversity in equestrianism said although her presence in the paddock on racedays is a good start, this was an opportunity not to be missed.

“The fact that the others did it with me made the whole image so much more powerful,” she told H&H. “Had it just been me, which I thought it might, it wouldn’t have had the same effect. There were people of all walks of life in that line-up and it created a powerful image everyone could relate to.”

Ashleigh said it feels like more action is being taken in racing, and that more time is being given to considering EDI, and “more people are willing to listen”.

“People seem to accept that there is an issue, which is great as it means it’s being acknowledged,” she said. “I’m not as aware about equestrianism as a whole but there seems to be more representation in the media.”

Ashleigh believes one thing that would help is unconscious bias training for more equestrian organisations and people such as coaches.

“If people at the top have certain beliefs, they filter down,” she said. “A friend of mine asked if I’d come in to talk to the young people and I said fine but don’t tell them what I do and I’ll ask them to guess, and I guarantee riding horses won’t be suggested. That’s a thought-provoking type of exercise that I think will help.”

Pony Club CEO Marcus Capel told H&H it is “really exciting” to have Sandra on board.

“She is helping us develop our EDI strategy, with first steps being to ensure our images represent a diverse range of members,” he said. “The participation photoshoot was a great, fun-packed day. The resulting images and video are being used in our current and future marketing materials as we promote the organisation as being more accessible and diverse.

“We have a long way to go, but being proactive and having Sandra on board is a great first step. As a former headteacher, I am passionate about accessibility, inclusion and diversity, and am thrilled that we are moving The Pony Club in the right direction.”

British Equestrian head of performance pathways Davd Hamer told H&H: “Sandra has an ambitious vision to develop a centre that will offer riding opportunities and equestrian workplace experience to riders from Black and mixed ethnicity communities. Sandra reached out to British Equestrian for advice on the requirements to set up the project and we have provided information on the steps that are necessary to be able to apply for funding to help develop the project further, as well as contacts within other agencies that can provide advice and support. British Equestrian will continue to provide Sandra with advice where it can and commend her for her dedication and commitment to making her vision a reality.”

Real action not ‘ticking boxes’: the collective responsibility for progress in diversity

We are all collectively responsible for making sure that the sport is making real progress – and not just “ticking boxes” when it comes to equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI).

That was the underpinning message that came from a panel debate on the subject at the Horseracing Industry Conference at Newbury racecourse on 30 June.

How success is measured, why representation matters, where to start when looking at gender imbalance among jockeys and what action people can take to make change happen headlined the discussion.

“When we’re discussing this topic, it can seem enormous. And actually, what every one of us really wants to know is, what can each of us do?” said diversity and inclusion steering group chairman Susannah Gill, director of communications and corporate affairs for the UK Tote Group.

“Don’t be a passive member of our industry and our society. If we don’t stand up for what we believe in, nothing’s going to change. So be a proactive advocate and not passive about these things,” she said.

Freedom Zampaladus, founder and chief executive of the Urban Equestrian Academy and member of British Equestrian’s equality engagement group, stressed the importance of representation.

“We need everyone to play their part to help make a change,” he said. “I think there’s something missing from EDI and that is R – R stands for representation. Representation is just as important as equality, inclusion and diversity. If there’s no representation, then it really could be seen as ticking boxes.

“What I mean by representation is someone like myself, who works at that level, every single day, lives the experiences every single day.”

Mr Zampaladus added that there is “a lot of fantastic work” being done in racing, which in his experience has led the way compared to the other equestrian disciplines.

He was not the only person to raise the point, and British Equestrian chief executive Jim Eyre responded, promising action.

“Rest assured on my watch things will change,” he said. “In other areas of diversity, we are very strong. But equally, I put my hand up and we will do whatever we can. We haven’t yet got a strategy for ethnic diversity, because we need to understand the data, we need to understand the baseline of where we’re at.”

He added that the next step is to have “tangible objectives and deliverables” rather than “box-ticking research”.

“In many areas I’ve heard [today], we will be much better together and stronger together if we speak with a single voice and approach these things collectively,” he said.

Naomi Lawson, director of communications at British Champions Series and Great British Racing, and co-founder of the Riding a Dream academy, continued Mr Zampaladus’ point about representation.

“If we wait for people to organically come up from racing, as it exists at the moment, into boardrooms, that’s going to take years and years,” she said, adding that racing has to be “much bolder” and look to action change at management level too.

She said the industry has lots of activity happening in this area, but what is lacking is an ethnicity strategy and to understand the lived experiences of people within the industry.

“What are the improvements we want to make? And what are the tangible actions we’re going to take which take us beyond commitment, and take us beyond elearning?” she said, adding that it is crucial to know these so the industry can look back and measure its progress.

She gave the example of how Riding a Dream, founded with the intention of increasing diversity and inclusion in British horseracing, is seeking to address this within the weighing room.

“Two percent of jockeys are from a diverse ethnic background; that doesn’t match up with 14% of the population across the UK,” she said.

“So what are the incremental steps that we’re going to take so that in 10 years’ time, 14% are from diverse ethnic backgrounds? That has to be part of the wider strategy work that is taking place, or is going to be taking place in the near future.”

Two young showjumpers aspire to be first mixed-heritage British Olympic riders

TWO young showjumpers have ambitions to be the first riders of colour to represent Britain at an Olympics – as British Equestrian (BEF) has pledged to improve diversity and inclusion in the industry.

The BEF and its 18 member bodies have signed the “unity pledge”, which commits to making equestrian “representative of the diverse communities around us”, to grow a welcoming community for all united by the love of horses, and to promote the physical and mental benefits of equestrianism.

BEF CEO Jim Eyre said: “Equestrianism and the passion for horses is by its nature hugely diverse and open to all, regardless of age, gender, religion, ability or background. However, we know ethnically diverse communities and people from lower socio-economic backgrounds are under-represented across equestrianism and may not feel it is for them.

“If we are to thrive as an industry and open up participation for everyone to experience the unique joy horses bring, we have to do more to embrace our differences and recognise what can be possible when equality, diversity and inclusion is woven into our culture.

“While this is a strategic imperative for the federation, it’s more about working to break down those barriers and creating a community where everyone truly feels they belong.”

H&H has reported that the BEF had initiated research into understanding barriers to participation, focusing on ethnically diverse communities and lower socio-economic backgrounds. Another project will focus on urban riding schools.

Two riders also hoping to break down barriers and encourage other people of colour into the industry are Darcey Williams and Myrtle Hallion, both 12.

Darcey’s mother Samantha told H&H her family is “not horsey at all, but life’s all about horses now”.

Darcy, whose heritage is white/Afro-Caribbean, had a ride at a party aged three and was hooked. Her talent was clear to those who taught her and, after her family moved from Bradford to the Yorkshire countryside, she met showjumper Guy Williams, with whom she is now based.

“You don’t have to be born into a horsey family,” Samantha said. “I think that’s a perception; there aren’t many Black families that are riders, and even Darcey’s nan asked if she’d be accepted because she’s mixed-race. She’s happy now and wants Darcey to do well and encourage more diversity. And Darcey wants to encourage more people to take it up and get the love for it like she has.”

Samantha was pleased to hear of the BEF initiatives, as was Claire Hallion, who is married to showjumper Mark and whose mixed-heritage daughter Myrtle, also 12 and aiming for the Olympics, is following in her adoptive father’s footsteps.

Myrtle (pictured) was placed in the top 10 at the London Global Champions Tour leg last summer, and jumped in the main ring at Hickstead, and has been invited to the GCT in Monaco in July.

Claire told H&H her daughter, who is also a successful model, wants to be a role model for other young people of colour.

“It’s good for British showjumping to have young people of colour coming through; it is such a white sport but it should be accessible to everyone,” she said.

Claire said Myrtle and Mark had heard comments about “the Black girl” at shows, and that Myrtle felt more accepted once Mark and Claire married and she took his surname, adding that Myrtle is already inspiring other riders.

Michael Owen to compete at major British show, plus more sponsorship news

Former England footballer Michael Owen will be behind the wheel in the ride and drive competition at Bolesworth International Horse Show (29 June to 3 July) as part of a new partnership agreement.

The former England striker turned racehorse owner/breeder has signed a deal with Bolesworth Estate to attend a number of events in the Cheshire venue’s calendar in 2022.

Michael will be the “headline name” at Bolesworth International. He will join 20-time champion jockey AP McCoy and other celebrities from the sport and entertainment worlds competing in the ride and drive on “speed and style day” (30 June).

“Bolesworth is a fabulous location with a superb event calendar running across the year – where there really is something for everyone to enjoy,” said Michael.

“I am looking forward to the partnership and to be taking part in the first big event at Bolesworth this summer.

“There is real synergy between Bolesworth and [my] Manor House Stables and I hope through this partnership there will be the opportunity to showcase horse racing and racehorse ownership to a new and interested audience.”

Bolesworth Estate managing director Nina Barbour said that Michael, owner of nearby Manor House Stables, is a “familiar face” at Bolesworth.

“It is wonderful that we have now taken this a step further,” said Nina, who added that Michael’s daughter, dressage rider Gemma Owen – who has recently entered the Love Island villa – has competed at Bolesworth in the past.

“I am really looking forward to welcoming Michael to a host of events throughout the year ahead – and to be competing with him too in our big season launch event.”

Riding a Dream Academy secures funding and expansion

The Riding a Dream Academy has secured three years’ seed funding by the Racing Foundation to expand its programmes following a successful pilot year.

The academy supports young riders aged 14 to 18 from diverse ethnic backgrounds, under-represented communities and urban equestrian centres get involved in racing.

It currently runs the year-long Khadijah Mellah Scholarship for riders, plus a riding-based residential week at the British Racing School (BRS).

A parent of one of the academy students said that the positive impact it has had on her daughter’s life is “immeasurable”.

“Her lifelong dream of training as a jockey has been made possible by this opportunity and I hope she can continue to work towards her goals now that this door has opened,” the parent said. “It has literally changed her life in ways I could not have made possible – I am for ever grateful.”

To date, 60% of the academy’s applicants, and 73% of students in the pilot year, are from diverse ethnic backgrounds. This compares to just 2% of jockeys and between 3 and 5% of individuals who currently go on the industry’s entry-level foundation course.

The academy has also announced that it will add a non-riding residential week to its rosta, catering for large numbers applying who lacked access to horses and sufficient riding experience, as well as regional weeks to take the academy out into communities. All programmes will be delivered by the BRS team.

“Being able to provide amazing opportunities to talented riders and young people with an interest in horse racing from a wide range of communities is at the heart of the academy,” said co-founder Naomi Lawson, who will move from her role of director of communications at Great British Racing to lead the academy.

“We are excited to be able to expand our programmes and reach many more individuals thanks to the Racing Foundation’s funding. The pilot has demonstrated the impact that the academy can have in making racing more diverse and inclusive with our students already working in the industry, applying for the foundation course and taking up other opportunities within the sport.”

ITV Racing’s Oli Bell, who co-founded the academy, said they are “incredibly grateful” to the Racing Foundation for its “enduring support” of the academy and sharing their vision of a more diverse and inclusive sport.

“The foundation has been with us from the start when they helped to fund the original Riding A Dream documentary, which followed Khadijah Mellah’s incredible story [to become the first Muslim woman to participate – and win – a horse race in Britain], through to our pilot year,” he said.

“For us to be in the position to support many other young people from diverse and under-represented backgrounds through their funding is a fitting legacy to all that Khadijah achieved and will help racing identify and support diverse talent from across the country.”

Riders Minds’ focus is on supporting the mental health of horse riders of all levels through online resources and a free, confidential 24-hour phone and text service.

“As part of our commitment to the equestrian community, Bates Saddles are delighted to support Riders Minds to raise awareness and promote the importance of mental health,” said Bates Saddles managing director Ron Bates.

Boodles extends Gold Cup sponsorship after ‘epic’ 2022

Jeweller Boodles is extending its sponsorship of the Cheltenham Gold Cup at the Cheltenham Festival to 2023 and 2024.

Boodles managing director Michael Wainwright said the company’s board had “no hesitation” in extending its association following the success of the 2022 Gold Cup.

“After an epic build-up to this year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup and then a wonderful day for the race itself, capped by the charismatic Rachael Blackmore being the first female jockey to win it, the Boodles board had no hesitation in extending our association by another two years,” he said.

“The whole experience was fabulous exposure for Boodles, and for me personally it provided one of the best days of my life.”

Boodles is also extending its sponsorship of the Boodles juvenile handicap hurdle at the Festival, which it has supported since 2018, for a further two years and gains further sponsorship rights across the Jockey Club.

British Equestrian to receive +£5 million to ‘level up’ access to horse sport

More than £5m of funding is being invested into equestrian sport as part of the Government’s plans to “level up” access to physical activity across the country.

British Equestrian (BEF) is one of more than 120 organisations working in partnership with Sport England on the 10-year “Uniting the Movement” strategy. The project was developed after Sport England research found some groups are “typically less active” including women, people with long-term health conditions, disabled people and those from ethnically diverse communities and lower socio-economic groups.

More than £550m is being invested by Sport England into the strategy, of which BEF will receive £5,187,216. Organisations were selected because of their ability to “influence change and improvement at the heart of the system they are a part of”.

“Equestrianism is a model sport for gender equality, age range, disability access and at its core is accessible to most socio-economic groups,” said a BEF spokesman. “However, we’re less successful in promoting ethnic diversity and this must become a feature of our future if we are to thrive and represent society better.

“Alongside our unique position, we will utilise this funding in partnership with stakeholders to ensure those who feel excluded are catered for by providing insight about the barriers communities face. This in turn will enable us to adapt our approaches to remove those barriers and increase access.”

Sport England chief executive Tim Hollingsworth said the Sport England’s goal is to get everyone active “no matter who they are, where they live or what their background is”.

“We can only innovate and tackle inequalities effectively by thinking about long-term change; Uniting the Movement is a long-term vision and our funding approach needs to reflect that,” he said.

BEF head of participation Mandana Mehran Pour added the organisation is “very excited” to be working with Sport England and playing its role in providing the voice, inspiration and leadership for all those involved with equestrianism.

“Our aim is to tackle inequalities in equestrian sport and it will form a major part of our workflow as a key focus in our overall strategy,” she said.

Last month, BEF announced plans to carry out research to understand the barriers to participation in riding, vaulting and carriage driving (news, 21 April). Following a tender process, BEF has confirmed the work will be carried out by learning and development consultancy AKD Solutions.

“This is the first major piece of work done in this area and we hope to learn through lived experience of people from ethnically diverse communities and low socio-economic backgrounds, which will help us to facilitate the way forward to our end goal,” said Ms Mehran Pour.

Young equestrian entrepreneur’s dream to inspire as diversity work continues

A RIDER who started a clothing brand aged 17 hopes her success will encourage more people of colour into equestrianism – as work continues to increase the industry’s diversity.

Caroline Ogunshola (pictured, left) was 17 when she founded Lusso Equestrian Apparel, which grew to a five-figure turnover in its first year.

Caroline told H&H she started riding aged 10, near her home in London.

“I was very lucky; it cost £8 for a weekend, so you’d get there at 9am, help out and ride for half an hour. Any more than that and I couldn’t have done it,” she said, adding that horses had to take a back seat while she studied for her A levels and then a business admin apprenticeship.

“But horses have always been a big part of my life and during the first lockdown, I started watching things like Heartland,” she said. “It made me want to start again but everywhere was closed so I decided to use my interest to start a business, just to reconnect.”

Caroline watched countless YouTube videos and used money she had saved for a car, doing everything from creating her logo to designing her website.

“My driving test kept being cancelled because of Covid; it was like everything aligned,” she said. “I had no design experience, just thought about what I wanted and was needed, and it was good riding leggings, which were comfortable. My brand is about a luxury feel without the price tag, comfort and, most importantly, trying to build a community.”

Caroline said once she had created her products, she needed pictures, but did not want to model herself.

“You don’t see many people of colour riding, and I thought people might judge, and think I didn’t know what I was doing, or my clothes were no good,” she said. “I tried to hide that the person behind it was a person of colour.

“Then I read about Khadijah [Mellah] and found Ebony Horse Club, and thought, ‘This is exactly what’s needed.’ I realised I wasn’t helping by doing what I was doing.”

Caroline says people are “taken aback” by the fact she rides, but she wants to encourage more people of colour into the industry, into riding and also careers.

“I think people want to be involved but think they can’t as they don’t see others who look like them,” she said. “My video did start a conversation and I think there need to be more, even if they’re uncomfortable.”

Caroline hopes imagery such as hers, using herself and her sister Toni, who also rides (pictured, right), will help.

“I hope other people will see it and think, ‘I can do that,’” she said. “I’m proud to have become a business owner and even more proud to pave the way for other ethnic minorities to enter this industry.”

Linda Greening, head of inclusivity at Hartpury University, spoke on diversity in relation to the staffing crisis at the National Equine Forum (3 March) as part of her aim to “keep inclusivity on the agenda”.

She told H&H of recent developments, including British Equestrian’s (BEF) programme for coaches in urban riding schools and its invitation to tender for research to help “understand the barriers to making equestrian activity more inclusive and representative of the UK population”.

She added that joint work between land-based colleges to encourage people from under-represented communities into the industry had stalled somewhat owing to a Government change in focus to outreach teams going into schools, and efforts to maintain momentum are ongoing.

Miss Greening agreed raising awareness of the range of jobs in the industry, as well as riding, is key, adding that she has tendered for some research on increasing diversity in equestrian post-graduate studies, for example.

“There’s definitely movement and momentum,” she said. “Everyone is mobilising, which is really good, and we’ve got to keep it on the agenda so people keep talking about it.”

Miss Greening added that the industry has to be a welcome place for all in it.

BEF head of participation Mandana Mehran Pour told H&H the BEF is “committed to making equestrianism more inclusive and accessible”, and continues to focus on equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI). She said the research open for tender, on behalf of BEF members, focuses on people from ethnically diverse communities and low socio-economic backgrounds.

“The outcome will help us shape an EDI strategy, to be developed with federation members,” she said. “We are all committed to make our sport diverse, inclusive, and welcoming to people from all backgrounds. The BEF is taking leadership in this area on behalf of the federation, and we’re also linked with the British Horseracing Authority and will collaborate more closely with it and its stakeholders.”

Ms Mehran Pour agreed that the focus is not just on riding but the huge range of activities people can be involved in within equestrianism, “from volunteering at a riding school or event to the career opportunities available”, adding that a report is also due to be released on diversity within the BEF workforce.

She said the Government is encouraging sporting governing bodies to address diversity, and people’s experiences in sports, and that the BEF will commit to “harness a culture of everyday inclusion to enable us to make real headway towards tackling inequalities within our ecosystem”.

The BEF also plans to carry out research aiming to develop urban equestrianism, working with urban riding schools.

‘London is boring by comparison’: milestone racing moment for teen who started at inner-city riding school

A teenager who learnt to ride in inner-city London has taken a major step towards his goal of being a jockey by becoming the first Riding A Dream Academy student to graduate from the British Racing School’s foundation course.

Oshane, 16, from southeast London, learnt to ride at Ebony Horse Club in Brixton, and joined the foundation course in December 2021.

He was one of the first students on the academy’s Khadijah Mellah Scholarship programme, which supports young riders from underrepresented communities get into British horse racing.

“I loved the scholarship and really enjoyed the foundation course, but it was a lot of hard work,” said Oshane.

“You get up at 6am to look after the horses and are busy all day. I loved riding all the different horses, particularly the challenging ones, and I really liked a horse called The Gay Cavalier – I just liked his way and his intelligence.

“I went back to London for a few days before starting on my yard placement and London is boring by comparison – usually you would be busy the whole time in Newmarket so I am looking forward to getting started.”

Broadcaster Oli Bell, who founded the Riding A Dream Academy alongside Great British Racing’s Naomi Lawson, said they are “all so proud” of what Oshane has achieved and “can’t wait to follow his career”.

“I first saw him at Ebony Horse Club a few years ago, and for him to have grown into the stylish rider he is today and be riding racehorses is so exciting,” said Oli.

“Oshane is the perfect example of how the Riding A Dream Academy can support young riders into the racing industry and our hope is that he is the first of many young people from the academy who go on to pursue a career in the sport.”

The academy, funded by the Racing Foundation, is based at the British Racing School in Newmarket. Demand for its programmes, which include the scholarship and a residential week, have outstripped places nearly four times over.

It aims to help racing become more diverse and inclusive and to support young people from underrepresented communities, disadvantaged backgrounds and diverse ethnic backgrounds get into racing.

New coaching scheme aims to transform lives

PEOPLE working in urban riding schools are working with British Equestrian (BEF) in a new scheme to help “transform lives and communities”.

The Equi-Youth programme, funded by Sport England and run with the Pony Club, is supporting volunteers and staff, from centres including Ebony Horse Club, the Urban Equestrian Academy, St James City Farm and Park Palace Ponies, to develop their skills and enable them to coach young people.

The 18-month scheme is designed to give a “complete coaching education”, including building skills in teaching riding, getting the most out of riders and working with young people.

BEF head of performance pathways David Hamer said: “Interviewing for our first cohort was a very rewarding experience – we were blown away by the enthusiasm, passion for the sport, and love of horses that each candidate shared.

“They all had a compelling narrative as to how they got into equestrianism and how much they’ve gained from being able to ride. They also expressed so much gratitude for this opportunity, but we are genuinely grateful to them for coming forward. Already, I’m enjoying following their journeys and can’t wait to see how they progress.”

The scheme’s lead mentors are British Horse Society fellows Darrell Scaife and Sarah MacDonald.

Mr Scaife said: “It’s been a great experience so far and the candidates are incredibly engaged, despite having to fit the programme in around busy lives and work commitments. All the coaches involved have the ability to go on and inspire so many young people and get them enjoying riding, and it’s really exciting to be a part of it.”

Mother-of-three Shantelle Griffith, who worked for the NHS and rode as a child, wanted to get back into horses and stumbled upon the Urban Equestrian Academy, where she now volunteers.

“I jumped at the chance to take part in the programme. It’s really interesting – Sarah and Darrell are guiding us in the right direction, making us feel really comfortable and welcome, and it’s really exciting,” she said. “I feel as though I’ve gone full circle – the course is building my confidence and confirming that I’m doing the right thing. I’m able to apply what I learn to the kids back to Urban Equestrian Academy, who inspire me as much as I’d like to inspire them.

“Horses have always been my passion and it’s a dream for me to be able to be a coach and mentor to the young kids. It’s everything, and I feel proud to be picked to be on the programme.”

More action needed to improve diversity in racing

Calls for more action on tackling racial inequality in British racing have been made following a panel discussion on the issue.

The Diversity in Racing steering group’s Let’s Talk About Race webinar on 10 November was hosted by broadcaster Nick Luck, joined by panellists Sheeren Daniels of anti-racism advisory firm HR Rewired, sports presenter and former cricketer Michael Holding, Great British Racing non-executive chairman Tony Langham and racehorse trainer Suzy Smith. There were 250 people engaged with the event, which focused on providing an “educational insight and a collective conversation on racism” and how the industry can progress.

Suzy Smith highlighted the gap between racing’s “actual behaviour” and the industry’s perceived behaviour.

“British racing has a diverse workforce, but people will not stay in the sport if our understanding of racism and behaviours around race are not improved,” she said.

“People of colour are [strongly] represented in our yards, but what message is it giving to them when as a sport we have not addressed anything since the murder of George Floyd? Forget about bringing people into horseracing, I worry that our silence has affected the people we already have.”

Jamaican-born Michael, who lives in Newmarket and has written a book Why We Kneel, How We Rise, highlighted the importance of more education on Black history, and discussed the meaning of “white privilege”.

“White privilege means that white people do not have the problem of overcoming dark skin. Because of the colour of my skin people form an immediate impression of me; someone once came up to me at the Epsom Derby when I was standing by a lift, dressed in top hat and tails, asking for directions automatically thinking I was working there,” he said.

“It doesn’t mean white people don’t have challenges, all people do, but they don’t have to overcome the obstacle of having dark skin before they even start their journey.”

Shereen Daniels discussed progressing racial diversity on a corporate level. She said this should start at board level, which can then filter down a business.

“When it comes to board representation, I don’t want to see black faces in white spaces, I want to know they have got budget responsibilities, they have profit and loss to look after and can make decisions because of their capabilities,” she said.

The Diversity in Racing steering group will launch a diversity and inclusion e-learning module on the British Horseracing Authority’s Racing2Learn platform at the end of the year, which joins to the LGBT+ module, and will provide a “valuable opportunity” for anyone in racing to learn more on key issues related to diversity and inclusion.

Sex harassment ‘epidemic’ and lack of diversity must be tackled for sport’s future

AN “epidemic” of sexual harassment and a lack of ethnic diversity are two issues the industry must tackle to secure a sustainable future.

A host of experts spoke at the 2021 Racing Foundation conference on 30 September, which was titled, “Future-proofing the racing industry: protecting people and the planet”.

British Horseracing Authority CEO Julie Harrington had pointed out that although horse welfare is always the top priority, this has been the focus of the independently chaired Horse Welfare Board, set up in 2020, so this conference concentrated on other areas.

Eleanor Boden gave a talk titled, “Where did all the girls go?” She explained she had intended to study teaching and education in racing for her PhD, but that it “became quite gendered”.

“We wanted to know why young people, especially females, were coming into education and training but not continuing,” Dr Boden said. She added that she spoke to 87% female jockeys, who came into the industry with aspirations.

Issues raised included acceptance of terms such as “a lad’s ride”, to safety issues – “Have you tried to get your boobs into a body protector?” – and bosses’ comments such as, “Your arse is too big.”

“Period shame wasn’t considered but some women are on contraceptives, to avoid embarrassment or weight fluctuations,” Dr Boden said.

She added that maternity and pregnancy were big issues, as could be hyper-femininity, with certain expectations to the point “some women were warned not to be bikes”.

A major issue though was sexual harassment. Dr Boden found women were told their place was in the kitchen rather than on the yard, and offered rides in exchange for sexual favours. She had to submit her study with a language and content warning.

“We’re in a sexual harassment epidemic,” she said. “It’s a societal problem and racing can’t be arrogant enough to think it’s not happening in our spaces. Racing has a massive opportunity to get this right and lead.”

Dr Boden said what is often brushed off as “just banter” is harassment or bullying, but many women said they did not report it as it was “not worth the hassle”, or they felt their jobs would be at risk. She said there is an acceptance of inappropriate comments, that it is OK to comment on a female body and that “part of the racing attitude means it goes unchallenged”.

“Gender stereotypes are widely accepted and unchallenged, and those who succeed are ‘those who learn to play the game’, but women can never win,” she said.

“This is happening and it needs sorting. It’s not going away, it’s getting worse.”

Dr Boden proposed creating a toolkit to let people know their responsibilities and an e-learning module has been written and will soon go live. Employers need to know their additional responsibilities and there should be a clear and easy way to report any concerns.

“It’s really important we all know safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility,” she said. “We should challenge behaviour and language and create awareness. If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t and if you stop the behaviour now, they won’t do it to someone else. If we get this right, everyone will benefit.”

Introducing the ethnicity in racing discussion panel, conference host Oli Bell, of ITV Racing, said increasing diversity in the industry is “hugely important and something we as a sport haven’t done enough about”.

Susannah Gill, chair of the diversity in racing steering group, said she was “sitting here pretty much as a posh white person”, but had long been the only woman in her areas of work, which led her into her efforts to increase diversity.

She told a story of a mayor who wanted his town’s fountain to run with milk on his birthday. Every resident was meant to empty in a jug of milk the night before, but on the day, the fountain ran with water.

“People thought that if everyone else put their milk in, no one would notice, but everyone had thought that,” she said. “And when it comes to ethnic diversity, I think that’s what happens; everyone thinks someone else will confront it, but they’re not. It’s a conversation we should all have.”

Ms Gill said everyone can help. If they work for an organisation that has signed up to the industry commitment on diversity and inclusion, they can contribute to its work in the area, and if not, they can try to work towards a sign-up. A webinar titled “Let’s talk about race” is planned for 10 November.

Sky Sports Racing researcher Callum Helliwell explained that he had ridden since childhood, but his dreams of being a jockey were “shattered” when he was told he was too tall. After a journalism degree, a course in Newmarket and working with racehorses in New Zealand, he took part in Sky documentary The Uncomfortable Race this spring, which led to his current job.

Mr Helliwell said it is crucial the industry attracts more fans and participants from all races, classes and backgrounds.

“Put yourself in someone else’s shoes and think about what it must be like from someone from a diverse background on a racecourse,” he said. “At Cheltenham, you walk into a sea of tweed, with white people under it, and if you’re not white and wearing tweed, you feel uncomfortable, as you feel you stick out. You find yourself wearing tweed and talking a different way, but the one thing I can’t change is my skin colour. You have to feel you’re accepted.”

Mr Helliwell said people from diverse communities will not return to the races if they feel uncomfortable and that everyone can help. He likened it to men taking on women’s comments about feeling unsafe in public after Sarah Everard’s murder, and what they could do to allay those fears.

“That’s the way to attract people from diverse backgrounds into the sport, we’ve got to make sure they want to come back,” he said, adding that one example is the creation of alcohol- and gambling-free “quiet zones” at racecourses for Muslims who do not drink or gamble.

Ashleigh Wicheard, assistant travelling head person for Neil Mulholland Racing, has previously told H&H she was often the only Black person in the paddock.

At the conference, she said she is passionate about boosting diversity and wants to concentrate on positives.

“My main message is that I’m not just trying to promote diversity, but inclusion for everyone,” she said, adding that building on the momentum created in 2019 by Muslim jockey Khadijah Mellah winning the Magnolia Cup at Goodwood is key.

Mr Helliwell added: “We need to put our foot down and make change. We can talk about it as much as we want, but we have to do more.”

Inner-city riders’ chance to shine with top eventing partnership

Young inner-city riders look set to benefit from new pathways into the eventing world thanks to a new partnership with the Windrush Equestrian Foundation.

Ebony Horse Club and the foundation, which was set up in memory of rider Christina Knudsen to support talented young eventers, have joined forces to offer more opportunities to Ebony riders.

The partnership kicked off this month at the young eventers’ programme summer camp, held at the Billy Stud, at which Ebony riders joined foundation eventers for a day of training with Pippa Funnell.

Windrush chief executive Mariachiara Apruzzese said: “It was truly special to have a few young riders from Ebony Horse Club attend the training at the Billy Stud with our riders.

“We are very excited about this partnership and are looking forward to offering more opportunities for Ebony riders to experience the eventing world alongside our mentors and riders.”

The Ebony riders, with yard manager Tom, spent time with Windrush mentor Pippa, learning about running a professional yard and training future star riders. The partnership aims to offer training and work experience in eventing.

Ebony Horse Club general manager Naomi Howgate said: “A key part of Ebony Horse Club’s mission is to provide new opportunities and raise the aspirations of our young people.

“Working with the Windrush Equestrian Foundation helps us do this in a very exciting way. Having our youngsters work with top riders and coaches inspires them for the future and helps them learn things that they wouldn’t learn in their regular lessons at our centre. Maybe one day we will see an Ebony rider compete alongside a Windrush rider as a result of this exciting partnership.”

Great work ongoing to boost industry’s diversity

H&H finds out about ongoing efforts to improve diversity in the equestrian industry, and what more still needs to be done

GREAT strides have been made in improving diversity in the equestrian industry – although there is of course more work to be done.

Providers of higher and further education are working together to increase and improve access to their land-based courses to under-represented communities, while campaigners are working with brands and sporting bodies to improve representation.

Linda Greening, head of inclusivity at Hartpury University Centre, told H&H she approached Landex, Land-Based Colleges & Universities Aspiring to Excellence, about a joint plan.

She said it came from her role as education liaison officer with the BAME Equine and Rural Activities Focus Group (BERF).

“The executive members were very keen to pass on details to their widening participation groups,” she said. “I think a lot of us have been challenged to address the high proportion of white students we’ve historically attracted.”

Ms Greening said the group is working on an action plan, and outcomes from that, on linking with education providers’ regional communities.

“We [Hartpury] are developing a good relationship with St James City Farm, and I know Hadlow College has a good relationship with Ebony Horse Club, and there are lots more community-based projects that could be involved,” she said, adding that the range of equestrian courses on offer at the different institutions gives a huge number of options for careers in the equestrian industry.

“It opens so many doors,” she said, adding that the colleges and universities can also share imagery and resources to provide role models to young people from under-represented communities.

“I think the community-based outreach is a fantastic way to reach families; educating them as much as the young people,” she said. “I’m really excited about this.”

BERF founder Sandra Murphy said Ms Greening’s “fantastic” work addresses an issue she has raised before, of the lack of opportunities for young people from under-represented communities to progress in the equestrian industry .

Ms Murphy is now on the British Equestrian (BEF) equality engagement group, and has been working with BEF member bodies.

“The Pony Club, for example, has been really proactive; they’ve got one of our BERF members on the handbook cover,” she told H&H. “We’re also collaborating with a leading equestrian brand, which is looking at working with us, on design, like hats with skin colour chin straps, and using BERF members to do their modelling. They’ll be so lifted to see their pictures in magazines; isn’t it wonderful we can do things like that?”

Ms Murphy also cited the diversity presentations at ths 2021 National Equine Forum (news, 11 March) and progress in her plans for a “centre of BAME excellence” for riders.

“We’ve sent out the proposal for the centre, now we need support and guidance,” she said. “We need a pilot, to see if it works, but we need people to believe in the vision. If we build it, people will come; if we don’t, there’s nowhere to go.”

The FEI’s centenary celebrations, which launched on 28 May, aim to “shine a spotlight on diversity in equestrian sport”.

“The FEI’s 100-year celebration is about bringing together each and every individual who connects with the horse at any level,” said FEI president Ingmar De Vos.

“We want this to be an inclusive celebration commemorating our collective journey over the past 100 years and looking ahead to shaping the future of equestrian sports together as a united community.

“Equestrian sport is rich in diversity and the one key factor that binds everyone together is our shared connection with and passion for the horse. For equestrian sport to continue to grow and flourish we need to make sure that together we cherish all members of our community and that everyone contributes to the key values at the heart of the sport.”

Speakers from across the industry discussed the efforts being made to improve diversity and inclusion in equestrianism, at the 2021 National Equine Forum. H&H finds out what has been done — and what is to come

EFFORTS are being made across the equestrian sector to make it one in which “everyone can belong and thrive”.

Diversity and inclusion within equestrianism was the subject of debate at the virtual National Equine Forum on 4 March. Speakers from across the industry looked at work that is already being carried out – and what still needs to be done.

Jess Cook, chairman of British Equestrian’s (BEF) equality engagement group (EEG), explained that equality, diversity and inclusion is “making sure no one feels left out or discriminated against”, owing to factors including age, ethnicity, gender, disability or other factors.

She said the EEG meets quarterly at minimum, its members representing disability, young people, women and girls, ethnically diverse communities, LGBTQ and low socio-economic groups. Members have helped the BEF form an action plan, shared photos to increase the image bank, shared stories to help develop case studies and given advice on the BEF’s future priorities. The focus will be on ethnically diverse communities.

“If we fail to address existing inequalities or engage more people from diverse ethnic backgrounds, it will only lead to greater challenges in levels of engagement in equestrianism,” she said.

The BEF is developing an action plan with Sporting Equals, which promotes ethnic diversity in sport, to address the issue,

looking at the workforce, training and resources, and perception of equestrianism in diverse communities.

“We wanted young people to see that being part of equestrianism is for them,” Ms Cook said,

Sandra Murphy, director of nutrition company Equidiet, and vet Navaratnam Partheeban spoke about the BAME Equine and Rural Activities Focus Group (BERF) of which they are founder and committee member respectively.

Ms Murphy spoke of her intention to open a centre of equestrian excellence for riders from ethnically diverse communities, to ensure they have appropriate opportunities for progression.

“If we work together, this could be a reality for the BAME community,” she said. “We are the change.”

She added: “It’s vital, if we want a sector that welcomes people from all walks of life, we must look up, speak up and challenge ourselves, no matter how uncomfortable the conversation gets.

“We’re very lucky to live and work with horses, so it’s up to us to encourage others to join us and feel they belong too, and can be themselves.”

Rose Grissell, head of diversity and inclusion at the British Horseracing Authority, discussed how “racing is everyone’s sport”, adding that this is a “fantastic opportunity” to increase involvement in the industry.

She spoke of efforts to ensure everyone can feel welcome at the races, and working and participating in the industry, such as talent pathways for young people from diverse communities, and planned research into the barriers to attending racing and participation.

Imran Atcha, of the St James City Farm & Riding School, spoke of his work, bringing access to horses to those who would not otherwise have had that chance.

“We’re finding our way still, as it’s difficult to keep horses in the city but it’s achievable,” he said. “Our kids could be as good as anyone if we give them a chance, and that’s what we’re all about.”

The mother of a young dual-heritage rider is campaigning for more diversity in equestrian publications, advertising and imagery.

Claire Goodwin carried out research into the subject as she had seen her daughter Erin-Mae, now seven, make observations.

A few years ago, Erin-Mae was in a showing line-up, and she said: ‘Why am I the only brown person, Mummy?’ Claire told H&H. “At that age, it’s an observation, and I didn’t really know what to say, just kind of ‘That’s how it is in this class’.

“Over the next year or so, she was becoming more able to communicate her ideas. We’re in quite a rural area, in Shropshire, and at the shows we go to, it would be unusual to see another person of colour. It opened my eyes.”

During lockdown last spring, Claire bought a number of magazines, including equestrian publications.

“By that point, I think Erin-Mae had realised it wasn’t just in the horse world; she’s in quite a minority in the area,” Claire said. “We were flicking through and she was asking what things were; I said they were adverts, and there was one with four people in it. She said ‘Well, I’m not there’.”

Claire and Erin-Mae found no more pictures of people of colour, and then after George Floyd’s death in the US, and trying to explain the subsequent events to her daughter, Claire contacted a local newspaper, who ran a story on Erin-Mae’s riding.

“That was really positive, and I could see people making changes,” Claire said. “So we decided to do this survey. We might be a minority, but let’s see if other people think like us.”

More than 110 people responded, and the majority felt that equestrian media and brands do not represent or use people from BAME (Black, Asian and minority ethnic) communities enough.

In a section for other comments, respondents said they would like to see more diverse representation, as they felt this would benefit the whole industry as well as individuals, and that they think changes are being made.

One wrote: “I feel advertising should be more diverse, but putting articles in about BAME riders just to make up the percentage isn’t right, they need to be meaningful or deserved articles to have an impact.”

Claire believes increasing diversity in imagery and publications will help younger people relate to the industry and aspire to be involved.

“If the first thing a child notices is ‘That’s not the colour of my skin, that person isn’t like me’ — it’s about identifying with people, especially when you’re young.”

She also stressed that her research is not aimed at trying to label the equestrian world as racist, but about observing and raising awareness.

“It’s about doing things that will give magazines the people to write about,” she said.

“I’d like to do this survey again in 12-18 months to see if things have really changed; I’d like to think we’re at a turning point and things are here to stay. If every brand could just use a percentage of people who aren’t white in their adverts, that would increase the diversity.”

Top riders including Nick Skelton, Laura Collett and Carl Hester are backing a new campaign to drive increased diversity and inclusion in equestrianism.

Reece McCook, founder of Ride Out Racism, has joined forces with Daisy Honeybunn and her husband Pravin Mukhi, founders of the DHD Foundation charitable trust, to launch #IAMPARTOFTHECHANGE.

H&H reported this summer that Reece had set up his campaign after years of discrimination, judging and verbal abuse, not to mention the fact he was the only person of colour in every equestrian establishment he had been in.

“It was disheartening and I lost my confidence – my dreams were shattered and I didn’t think I’d ever be able to work in the industry,” he said. “But with the support of friends and family I set up Ride Out Racism, to lower barriers and make the sport more accessible and diverse on every level.”

Reece met Hickstead director Daisy when he was nominated to appear on her Horse & Country TV series Daisy Dines With, through his work as an ambassador for the Urban Equestrian Academy.

“Reece is a very determined and impressive young man, and he is doing such important work within our sport and industry,” Daisy said.

“We have become great friends, and we wanted to work on a campaign together that could actually spark real effective change. We want to build a more diverse equestrian world, where seeing faces of every colour, and people from every sphere of life is the norm, and where acceptance is automatic.

“Many people and organisations are already working extraordinarily hard within the industry towards this goal, but there is still a long way to go. We wanted our campaign not only to show people the projects we are working on, but also to create a platform for others to share their own work and ideas.”

An equestrian feed company founder who won a prestigious Black British Business Award hopes her success will inspire BAME people across the industry. H&H spoke to her, and others, about progress towards greater diversity in equestrianism

AN equestrian entrepreneur hopes her recent prestigious award will help inspire other young BAME people into all areas of the industry.

Sandra Murphy, founder and managing director of Equidiet UK, was announced as the consumer and luxury senior leader winner of the Black British Business Awards, on 30 October.

Ms Murphy, whose brand has a European patent, making her the first Black woman to secure such a patent in the UK, is also the founder of the BAME Equine and Rural Activities Focus Group (BERF), which aims to “support, encourage, inspire, educate and progress members of the BAME community in all disciplines, all areas of the equine industry and all rural activities”.

Ms Murphy told H&H she hopes her win will inspire others.

“I was very excited about the win; there were a lot of dynamic, entrepreneurial people in that category, and the award recognises how hard we’ve worked,” she said.

“This represents achievement by a Black female and a Black business, and the fact it’s a Black woman in the equestrian industry, I hope will act as a platform.

“I want to inspire Black women, and young Black business people, and those in the equestrian industry. Not just riding – in all areas.”

Ms Murphy says she has struggled to be accepted in the industry, but that this award is timely, with greater awareness of the drive to increase diversity.

“With Black History Month [in October] and the Black Lives Matter movement, it’s come at the right time for people to be more aware of the issues,” she said. “The more we can keep the momentum up, the better.

“There’s still a chasm but I want to see an overspill of BAME riders – we’ve been discovering some phenomenal talent – but I’d like to see that become the norm.”

Linda Greening, head of inclusivity at Hartpury University and Hartpury College, has joined the BERF group.

She told H&H it is important to address all issues around minorities.

“There are so many barriers to getting into equestrianism, and ethnicity definitely shouldn’t be one of them,” she said. “At Hartpury, we recognise we have a low proportion of BAME students across the board, specifically in equine, and are racking our brains on how to address that.”

Ms Greening said a commitment to working in the community and raising awareness of what the college can offer is one approach, but she believes now is an “exciting time” for equestrianism.

“It’s an opportunity to reflect as an industry on what’s happening and why, but momentum is building,” she said, adding that being a member of the BERF group has led her to realise the traction the movement has gained.

“This isn’t an activist movement, it’s passive and peaceful; people wanting to raise awareness and remove barriers to people getting into equestrianism and progressing, across the industry,” she said. “I’m so pleased Sandra has won this award; we recognise the importance of positive role models, but it also helps the rest of the industry recognise that these people exist, and it’s the norm.”

Jess Powell, a mixed heritage BERF member, doctor and lifelong rider, who team chases and follows hounds on her horse Mojo, told H&H she grew up in rural North Yorkshire, and was “always the only brown person, at school or doing anything”, but her equestrian experiences have been largely positive.

“There was snobbery at Pony Club from parents about our cheap ponies, but that was the same for everyone!” she said. “I’ve had more surprise that I’m a female doctor than because I’m a brown person riding a horse.”

Mrs Powell said she believes a big issue is the urban-rural divide, as most rural communities are predominantly white, and there is less access to riding in cities.

“I think it’s very much a town-country and a cultural thing, more than a colour thing, in my experience,” she said. “When I lived in London, I was more into athletics and rugby, because they were accessible; there aren’t ponies in cities, whereas I grew up with them.

“I think to be more inclusive, we’ve got to get city kids out playing with ponies, whatever their colour. Someone said to me the other day the industry has had a bit of a beating over diversity, but it’s not all negative news.”

The mother of a pony-mad five-year-old hopes the “stigma” of boys riding can be decreased, and hopes the industry can acknowledge it is not just a girls’ sport.

Jessica Flack told H&H her son Dylan enjoys riding and competing his pony Pepper, including representing his branch of the Pony Club, “just as much as the girls”.

But not only has she found it a struggle to find clothes that fit and are not pink, sparkly or covered in unicorns, she is also concerned about whether her son will want to keep riding in future

“I’ve always had and worked with horses, and he’s always been round them but I never really thought about getting him a pony,” she said. “It just seemed to happen.

“He’s always been keen, especially so now he can jump and go fast! But it’s so hard trying to get what he needs.”

Jessica said it is a general perception that ponies and little girls go together, citing a widely shared social media post about reasons to “buy your daughter a pony”, in which she changed “daughter” to “child”.

“It worries me a bit,” she said. “He’s only five and all his friends think it’s really cool he’s got a pony but as he gets older, it could be a problem, and that could be why some boys stop riding. I know people whose sons have been called names, and they don’t ride any more.

“It’s weird it’s seen as a girls’ sport when such a high percentage of the top riders are men; I don’t get it.”

Jessica said she taught in a riding school for four years, and almost none of her pupils were boys.

“Maybe non-horsey people think they’ll try little girls on riding, but not their little boys,” she said. “I want to make it more normal, as the whole stereotype worries me. I don’t want Dylan to think riding’s a girls’ sport when he gets older.”

H&H speaks to leading figures to find out out what work is being undertaken in ongoing attempts to increase diversity in the equestrian industry

PROGRESSION is key in promoting and retaining diversity in the equestrian industry, campaigners believe, as efforts to improve the situation step up a gear.

British Equestrian (BEF) has held the second meeting of its equality engagement group, which aims to help the BEF engage with people already working in the area to “help us provide equal opportunities for all to take part in equestrian sport, and to make what we do more accessible”.

One of those who has had input into the equality group is Sandra Murphy, founder of equine nutrition company Equidiet UK, who has recently been named as a finalist for the Black British Business Awards 2020.

Ms Murphy has also started the BAME Equine and Rural Activities Focus Group (BERF), which has been having regular committee meetings as it aims to “support, encourage, inspire, educate and progress members of the BAME community in all disciplines, in all areas of the equine industry and in all rural activities”.

Ms Murphy told H&H membership of BERF is currently through a Facebook group, which members have to be approved to join. They then share details of their involvement, helping connect opportunities with those who would benefit from taking them.

The committee is also working on ideas to boost diversity and inclusion, such as a BAME charter.

“This is for anyone from senior executives of businesses and governing bodies, to coaches and trainers,” Ms Murphy said. “They would have unconscious bias training, and be made aware of issues in equality and diversity, which they can then pass on.

“Once somewhere has got that mark, riders will know that’s somewhere that understands the issues they might have, and can recognise if they’re being discriminated against – and it means accountability for the yard or business.”

BERF would also like to see changes made to governing bodies’ social media policies to ensure any members making discriminatory comments online can be held accountable.

But its overriding aims are to provide ways into the industry, and then progression, for BAME people.

“There’s a hole people fall into,” Ms Murphy said. “You get to a certain point and there’s no progression. The talent is there but there’s nowhere to go.”

Ms Murphy praised the work of inner-city riding schools such as St James City Farm in Gloucester and the Urban Equestrian Academy in Leicester, which aim to make riding available to those who might not otherwise have had the opportunity. She would also like more opportunities for those who want to stay in the industry.

“These might be top riders, but also grooms, physios, farriers or business people,” she said. “We need to give them a stepping stone across the gap.”

Ms Murphy is to take on a PhD student to live with her while she completes her dissertation, during which time the student will be able to ride Sandra’s horses, and have training and competition opportunities. If the scheme works, she will repeat it.

She would also like to see a “centre of BAME excellence” set up for equestrians, at which people who might not feel they can take up college courses can progress in the industry.

“We’ll still have the same situation in 10 years, unless we get BAME people into the rural communities now, so they can be working their way up,” she said. “If we’ve got more than two or three people thinking the same thing, we can and will change things.”

Anna Ross: We must aim for gold in equality H&H Plus

H&H’s dressage columnist on where the sport succeeds in diversity, and where it needs work

Jen Greenhalgh, head of equine at Myerscough College in Preston, told H&H she had been in contact with the Urban Equestrian Academy, to find out what the college could offer riders, before the pandemic. And although Covid has disrupted her plans, she is still keen to continue.

“I was hoping to get some of the kids up to us to see the things we do,” she said. “I think what the academy does is brilliant.”

Ms Greenhalgh said she wants to help “move the industry forwards”.

“There are more people out there than white ladies!” she said. “We just need to keep pushing it, and get the diversity. Once we have got it, we will end up with all sorts of other ideas and diverse thinking coming through from different cultures, which will make what we already have so much richer.”

She added that the college aims to showcase all aspects of the equestrian industry.

“It’s not just about riding,” she said. “The more people we can get involved in different parts of the industry, the richer it will be.”

A BEF spokesman said: “We had a productive second meeting but it’s still early days and we lost some impetus with Covid, sadly. The group will work towards putting proposals together for board approval and implementation with the member bodies.

“We’re working to get two dates in the diary before the year end so we build up momentum and hopefully have some tangible plans to share early next year.”

‘Horses don’t see Black or white’: mother of young Black rider hopes to nurture future talent

“Talent has no boundaries”, says the mother of a young Black rider who hopes to help inspire adults to nurture the equestrian stars of the future.

Shona Kelly says her six-year-old daughter has inherited her own love of horses. Shona has ridden since her childhood, in East Dulwich, London.

“I think she’s inherited my enthusiasm,” Shona said. “She’s taken to it amazingly quickly and is doing really well.”

Shona said that now, in their West Wickham home, as was the case in East Dulwich, there were not many Black riders.

“Because Aisha’s only six, she doesn’t feel different, just does it and everyone loves her,” she said. “I feel more minority people should take up riding, because it’s for everyone. Talent doesn’t have boundaries.

“Talent should be nurtured; I’ve always supported my kids in what they want to do and that’s what I’m doing with Aisha.”

Shona added: “I think a lot of Black people feel that because riding is mainly white people, it’s not for them but I never felt like that; my parents raised me to think I could do anything I wanted.”

Shona said she fears a lot of talent is wasted as people never have the chance to prove what they can do.

“Horses are for everyone; they don’t see Black or white,” she said.

Move over Carpool Karaoke: here comes Celebrities in the Saddle

Move over James Corden, Carpool Karaoke has had its day.

The Urban Equestrian Academy is taking over, with filming of its new series Celebrities in the Saddle already under way.

Rather than singing, the stars of the series will be trying their hand at riding, in episodes to be screened initially on the academy’s YouTube channel and shared on its social media.

Academy founder Fr33dom Zampaladus told H&H he had the idea some years ago.

“I sat on it until I was in a position to have a real production company making it, and could draw the celebrities I wanted,” he said. “Now, the time feels right.”

The series kicked off with former boxing world champion and Sky Sports commentator Johnny Nelson on Thursday (3 September) and Radio 1Xtra DJ Melody Kane the following day. Among those also lined up to take part is actor and former So Solid Crew member Ashley Walters, aka Asher D.

The celebrities will ride in different areas, including severely deprived districts of the academy’s home town Leicester.

Fr33dom said the stars will share the episodes with their thousands of social media followers, helping to raise money towards building a new equestrian centre in the inner city, to boost the academy’s ambition of taking riding to those who could not otherwise access it, and also boost awareness.

“We’ll tap into audiences that aren’t necessarily horsey, who will see their role models engaging with horses; it’ll bring a whole new audience to the equestrian world,” he said, adding that he hopes the boost to inclusion and diversity within equestrianism will be significant.

£150,000 funding to help beat inequality in equestrianism

British Equestrian (BEF) has launched a fund to help struggling riding centres that are tackling inequality.

The BEF has been awarded £150,000 Lottery funding by Sport England, to support struggling centres by providing immediate funding to “those most in need”.

It is targeted at centres and groups that provide activity for disabled people, which have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic but have been unable to secure other financial support.

In addition, applying centres will be judged on their work with people from Black, Asian and other minority ethinic communities, as well as those from “lower socio-economic backgrounds”.

“We know the immense benefits that being around horses can have for disabled people, so we are very grateful to Sport England for helping us to support centres in this way,” said BEF head of participation David Butler.

“We look forward to receiving applications and being able to help equestrian centres in financial need to continue the great work they do in providing riding activity for disabled participants in their community.”

Equestrian centres experiencing short-term financial hardship owing to the coronavirus can apply, and the funds can be used to pay bills and staff costs.

The grant is part of Sport England’s Tackling Inequalities Fund, which aims to “address inequalities in sport and activity levels by working with its partners to reach those most in need”.

“The funding will enable community groups working with target audiences — lower socio-economic groups, Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities, disabled people and people with long-term health conditions — to continue to exist and engage with their communities with a view to keeping them active during both the lockdown and early recovery stages,” a BEF spokesman said.

Sport England chief executive Tim Hollingsworth said the body was proud to be able to offer the support.

Calls for greater efforts to enable disabled individuals to work in the equestrian industry H&H Plus

As some disabled individuals are finding they are unable to complete their equestrian qualifications after being accepted on courses, H&H investigates the issue and asks what the solutions are...

Blowing a breath of fresh air through the equestrian industry in terms of inclusivity in relation to physical disabilities could have benefits across the board.

This is the view of students and teachers who have come across barriers – not necessarily in riding, but in working with horses.

H&H spoke to Jemima Croft, who is studying for a foundation degree in equine science and management, and staff from Myerscough College, Lancashire.

Jen Greenhalgh and Charlotte Brigden, head and assistant head respectively of equine at the college, agree with Jemima that while huge progress has been made in riding for those with physical disabilities, recognition  of disabled workers in the industry is not well established.

Jemima, who has functional neurological disorder which causes many complex neurological and joint issues, moved to Myerscough a year ago. Despite the fact she had been unable to complete practical assessments in her previous foundation qualification, the college accepted her, and has ensured she has everything she needs to progress.

But as she was told by examining bodies that she could not undertake the lungeing assessments, she does not have that part of the qualification. Jemima sometimes uses a wheelchair and sometimes sticks, and lunges with a stick in each hand, while being able to control the horse, which the bodies do not feel is safe.

“Myerscough has been my first positive experience as a disabled person in education,” Jemima told H&H. “There’s so much in place there; there’s not been a single time I’ve felt disabled. I was able to get on with my studies, without having to prove myself.

“But because I don’t lunge like an able-bodied person does, I can’t progress.”

Ms Greenhalgh told H&H changes to vocational qualifications were brought in as a result of a report some years ago.

“There had been options for people who were unable to complete mandatory units; with some adjustments, it was possible to have successful students, and Jemima would have been one of them,” she said. “But the qualifications were said to be not fit for purpose. So they were revamped, and now are fit for purpose, if you can do everything.

“Now, with Jemima’s lungeing, there’s no option or moveability. So we see someone like her, totally capable if you make reasonable adjustments, but there’s not enough ability for her to progress and get the qualification.”

Jemima’s concern is that if she cannot get qualified, she will not be able to become a disabled worker in the equestrian industry.

“I feel my disability isn’t what makes me disabled, it’s more society,” she said. “I’ve had my issues eight years and am pretty clued up on what I can and can’t do; the bigger issues are put in place by other people, making me more disabled than I actually am.”

Ms Greenhalgh believes the industry has scope to reflect on its views and actions in this area, and that while cost is sometimes cited as a barrier to “reasonable adjustments”, “I think sometimes we need to blow some fresh air in, and look for possibilities, rather than closing doors”.

Jemima agreed, adding: “This needs to be positive. Why don’t we look at the fact there’s a minority group here that could have a positive influence?

“I’ve got hypersensitivity and can feel a horse is going to spook before it does, I’m very good at problem-solving, because I do that every day.

“There are things a disabled rider can do or pick up on that an able-bodied person couldn’t. That could help develop the industry.

“There’s so much been done for riding for people with disabilities, but I just want to work and can’t; if we could apply that positivity to the workforce, and have an open mind, I think that would solve the one thing holding us back.”

Rachel Wade, whose 17-year-old daughter Ash was told by her college she could not complete certain practical assessments owing to her lack of vision, agrees about the need for change.

“Absolutely there are health and safety considerations,” she told H&H. “But Ash does these things every day. I’m confident she can pass but they’re not even allowing her the chance to fail because she’s blind; that’s wrong.

“The worst thing the college has done is not just deprive her of her education; they’ve imposed their limiting beliefs on her.

“Education should be at the forefront of empowering people with disabilities, but every person in Ash’s class is seeing that she can’t do things because she’s blind. What message does that send?”

British Horse Society (BHS) director of education Alex Copeland told H&H the BHS’s aim is to “promote equity, diversity and equality of opportunity in assessment, and facilitate the widest possible range of candidates”.

“A reasonable adjustment is an alteration to an assessment that will enable a candidate to participate on a fair basis,” he said.

“Although adjustments cannot be made to the assessment criteria, the BHS makes many reasonable adjustments to the process to ensure candidates can access the qualification. Examples of this include adjusted or specialist tack, providing a translator or person who can sign, and allowing additional time.

“The BHS welcomes applications from candidates requiring reasonable adjustments, and we carefully consider each application. On average, we arrange around 250 assessments every year, in all parts of the UK, for candidates who have requested reasonable adjustment on the grounds of permanent or temporary conditions.

“Our efforts are ongoing, with a working group to focus specifically on how we can continue to enhance our reasonable adjustment process to ensure all our qualifications are widely accessible. The group consists of our qualifications awarding body Activity Alliance, Riding for the Disabled Association, and other industry professionals. This aims to complete in autumn 2020.”

The Department for Education told H&H all students must have equal access to assessment.

“All qualifications have special arrangements and consideration to ensure all students can access assessments,” a spokesman said. “Colleges can, and should, apply to their awarding organisation for consideration for any students affected by circumstances out of their control or may be suffering from a condition or illness that could disadvantage them.

“Changes brought in following the Wolf Review of Vocational Qualifications in 2011 did not affect the need for all awarding organisations and all providers to ensure that all students had equal access to assessment.”

A year on from her Magnolia Cup victory at Goodwood, Khadijah Mellah hopes her success will inspire other young people and help encourage diversity in the industry.

Last August, the then-18-year-old became the first person to ride in a hijab on a British racecourse, taking the win on the Charlie Fellowes-trained Haverland.

She went on to be named the Sunday Times young sportswoman of the year and is now an ambassador for Great British Racing.

Khadijah, who grew up in Peckham, south London, and learnt to ride at Ebony Horse Club in Brixton, is the subject of documentary Riding a Dream, which will be shown on ITV this Saturday (1 August) at 12.50pm, and which has been named best British short film at the prestigious British Documentary Film Festival.

In an interview with Great British Racing, Khadijah said her win has changed some perceptions of young Muslim women.

“That’s something I am proud of and will continue to do,” she said. “Me being Muslim isn’t just it. It is important that people realise that being a certain religion or from a certain background doesn’t determine your interests and the person you are, and it certainly doesn’t determine how good you are.

‘We’re looking at ways to change the industry’: anti-racism campaign gathers pace

Training and opportunities for people from under-represented communities to get into equestrianism are among the projects in the pipeline as campaigners seek to increase ethnic diversity in the horse world.

Reece McCook and his colleagues on the Ride out Racism campaign are working on unconscious bias training for equestrians, and an inclusion project, among other schemes.

Reece, a mixed-heritage rider who has pledged to promote and support BAME people in the UK horse industry, has also been applying to various sources for the funding the campaign needs to progress. He has also been promoting his work in the media, to almost entirely positive feedback.

“We haven’t really had any negativity,” he said. “The only thing that’s a big disheartening is that we feel some of the bigger establishments could be doing more to help share our message. But apart from that, the response from the general public has been phenomenal.”

Reece explained that the training on unconscious bias would be delivered to yards, either managers to pass the knowledge on to staff, or for all employees. Centres that had completed the training would then receive accreditation.

“It would be like safeguarding training, based on ethnic diversity and our whole message,” he said. “[It would be] telling the public about institutionalised racism, and the different types of discrimination that can occur.”

The courses would also provide education on different religions and cultures, to “try to make sure everyone’s as comfortable as possible”.

The inclusion project aims to make riding accessible to as many people as possible, including those in inner-city areas.

“There’s lots in the pipeline,” Reece said. “We’re waiting to hear back about funding as we need that, and sponsorship, but I’d love Ride out Racism to be like the Kick it Out campaign in football. I’d like it to be almost a governing body, to support BAME people in equestrianism.

“We’re looking at ways to change our industry.”

When I was six, I was strolling to the local shop with my auntie and we passed a field with two Shetlands. I automatically decided I was going to call them Bobbie and Jack and wanted to feed them carrots. Since that moment, my love for horses has grown and grown.

I volunteered at my local riding school in Coventry, in return for rides. Once I fell off two horses in one day. I went home and told Mum. I had no confidence. A week later, I got an envelope addressed to me. All I did was scream! It was a picture of Carl Hester at the 2012 Olympics. It said, “Wishing you all the luck in your equestrian career, reach for the stars, best of luck, Carl.” My mum had told one of her colleagues about my loss of confidence, they had emailed Carl and that was his response.

It’s not something you see every day, a Black person riding horses. I’m from an inner-city community and I hid the fact I rode from my friends until I finished college. I felt I’d be judged. Being in the saddle, nothing else matters. The only thing I’m concentrating on is the way my horse is going, my position, my posture, I love the technicality horses bring. I love even saying I can ride. You’re as one, a team, learning non-verbal communication skills.

In every equestrian establishment I’ve been the only person of colour. My family is multi-cultural; Scottish, Barbadian, Irish and Jamaican. I’ve had some negative experiences. I was at a little DIY yard for two weeks, and I was refused a tack room key by a woman who didn’t trust me; she thought I must be a thief.

I felt judged by a stereotype. It was disheartening.

I’ve always wanted to be an event rider. I finally got my working pupil placement and it felt like gold dust. My family threw a big party, we were so excited about the opportunity. I lasted three weeks. The rider I was working for was off competing almost all the time. I was called useless ******, chimney sweeper, black jack (that’s the paint we used to paint stables).

It knocked my confidence. The yard manager said, “We’ll speak to the person.” My auntie is a policewoman and said, “You need to take it further,” but the witnesses refused to give a statement.

My dream was shattered, I didn’t think I’d ever get anywhere in the industry. I wanted to give up, but thanks to the support of my friends and family I came up with “Ride Out Racism”. I want to make changes for everyone else.

I didn’t want to come across as an angry Black man with a chip on my shoulder. I’m absolutely not saying the equestrian world is racist, that’s not my message. We want to lower the barriers and make the sport more accessible and diverse.

Ride Out Racism sells rosettes as a promotional thing. A percentage of sales goes to inner-city riding school Urban Equestrian Academy, plus commission to the sales platform Etsy, and to fund future projects. As they’re usually awarded in competition, there’s a positive connotation with achievement.

Future plans include producing a calendar featuring ethnic riders, and an education pilot working with schoolchildren in inner-city communities to deter them from anti-social behaviour and get them involved with horses.

There are inspiring stories out there. I’ve heard from the first Black physiotherapist for the equestrian industry; that was so powerful. Empathising with ethnic riders who have been through the same struggles is empowering. I know I’m not alone and I’m making a difference.

The journey to success is so rewarding; my goal is to ride at Badminton, competing with William Fox-Pitt and Oliver Townend. I want to stick out like a sore thumb. I want people to say, “I remember him, he started Ride Out Racism, now look at him.”

Anna Ross: We must aim for gold in equality H&H Plus

What fun we had at the Hickstead Rotterdam Grand Prix Challenge, which will be broadcast online this weekend (18–19 July). The spectator app makes it all the more enjoyable and means that every armchair judge in the land will doubtless have a G&T and their keyboards at the ready while watching.

I’m already congratulating the 44 riders who have put themselves “out there” by taking part, and Dane Rawlins’ team who gave us something to enjoy after a drought of top sport.

“We must do better”

“Real” shows have now restarted and it’s great to see everyone again, with the bonus that we no longer feel obliged to kiss people we don’t like!

Joking aside, emotions have run high on social media, fuelled by different interpretations of the Covid-19 regulations and with racism at the forefront of public attention. It’s about time we reminded ourselves of our commonalities. Reactions to recent world events have shocked me and I feel we need to do better when it comes to inclusivity.

On the whole, I think we do pretty well in dressage by many criteria. We have old and young, male and female, para and able-bodied all competing against each other – and by my reckoning, there are more gay men in the sport than straight.

Unconscious bias is becoming more of a buzzword in society, but we’ve recognised this and have tried to eliminate it in dressage circles for many years. Halo bias, contrast bias, name bias, conformity bias and affinity bias, to name a few, have all been examined in depth amid attempts to create a fair field of play and transparency in dressage judging.

Racism is the very epitome of bias and utterly contradictory to the concept of the level playing field in sport. We are passionately opposed to the idea of bias in dressage and are well placed to improve; by embracing the rules and aims of dressage and in agreeing that judges should assess without preconception, our sport is already echoing the wider message of equality.

“Ethnic minorities need a leg-up”

Equestrianism has been criticised in the past for being inaccessible. By being completely committed to creating more diversity in the sport, we are better representing the fundamental principles of Olympism. It is not the alleged “boringness”’ of dressage that could eventually lead to it being dropped from the worldwide sporting stage, but instead the perception of it as an elitist sport for rich white people. Just over 18% of people living in the UK are not white and they are under-represented in dressage.

People from ethnic minorities need a leg-up into our sport. British Equestrian is “on it” and is progressing towards the advanced level of the UK Equality Standard, having achieved the intermediate level in 2016. To achieve this “upgrade”, it must demonstrate significant progress towards increasing diversity.

To date, we have only had white riders on our championship teams, but one of them, Emile Faurie, is taking positive action to bring riders from more diverse backgrounds into the sport through his charitable foundation.

To quote Reece McCook, an 18-year-old rider who is passionate about helping other young minority groups into riding with his “Ride Out Racism” campaign: “It’s a start towards building a more diverse equestrian world where black faces are normal, riding in hijab is standard and acceptance is automatic.”

We in dressage are well placed to lead the way and we should be proud to do so. To be the gold standard when it comes to racial equality, as well as gold medallists in the ring, really would be a win for us all.

‘Change is coming’ to improve diversity in equestrianism

“Things can’t stay the same, if we don’t act the same”.

Action is being taken across the industry to try to address the lack of ethnic diversity in our sport.

H&H reported last month on the barriers to diversity in equestrianism and what is being done to bring them down.

In the past few weeks, measures taken at different levels of the industry include equestrian governing bodies’ signing up to a Sport and Recreation Alliance pledge to tackle racism and inequality to photographer Jade Greenfield’s pictures of young mixed-heritage rider Trinity Allman.

Ashleigh Wicheard, who has ridden from a young age, worked for years in racing and was often the only Black woman in the paddock, told H&H she feels confident change is coming.

“There is definitely a lack of Black people in the sport, but there’s a lot we can do about that; that can change,” she said.

“We need role models. In other sports, there are people for everyone to relate to, but at the moment, in the equestrian world, we don’t have those Black faces for people to aspire to.”

Ashleigh started riding as a child, and was on the Avon Vale Pony Club mounted games team for years. She moved on to working with point-to-pointers and, although she had to cut back on riding for a while to concentrate on schoolwork, she returned to working with horses, in racing, after she had her daughter.

She rode work, and led up at courses including Aintree and Cheltenham, going on to work with a project that uses equine therapy to help current and former prisoners.

Ashleigh said that apart from one or two comments, she never experienced direct or deliberate racism but she knows how it feels to be the only Black person in a situation.

“With the recent Black Lives Matter movement, I feel so much positivity has come out,” she said. “We’re really coming together as a community and I now feel aware of other Black people in the sport, and I can communicate with them, and we’ve got common interests.”

Ashleigh has thought about whether taking horses into schools — as her previous projects have in prisons — would help, to give young children access to the sport and realise they could be part of it. But however it happens, she thinks change will come.

“There are so many people dedicated to the cause,” she said. “Or maybe not that many, but those who are are saying ‘come on, let’s do this’. They are the game-changers who aren’t afraid to ruffle feathers. Some people might feel uncomfortable, as they think pro-Black means anti-white, but it doesn’t.

“There is a level of racism in equestrianism; maybe not direct name-calling but assumptions, and looks, and underlying feelings.

“But I’m sure things will change. They can’t stay the same, if we don’t act the same.”

Sandra Murphy, the director of Equidiet who has also in the past been the only Black rider or person in an equestrian setting, is also campaigning for change.

She has set up the BAME equines and rural focus group (BERF) to try to open doors for BAME people into rural activities and jobs such as farriery or farming, as well as riding.

She is gathering information and supporters for this project, and hopes also to use her experience with the National Schools Equestrian Association to help BAME riders progress, so of those who start learning at riding schools, the talented riders can be helped to progress higher in the sport.

She is to offer a place as an equestrian administration assistant in her firm, to someone who will also have the chance to ride and compete, but acknowledges that change will be a slow process.

“You’re never going to rush this sort of thing; people need time to gain the skills and experience,” she told H&H. “The problem is progression; we need to see the BAME riders at our national championships, which are achievable for anyone, people of colour or not.”

Sandra has also been in touch with Sport England, to find out if she can work with the body on diversity, also acknowledging that to see people work up to board level in sports administration will also be a long job.

But she says she has also noticed increased positivity recently, with “lovely messages” from people online, and others fighting her corner in debates.

“I think this movement has allowed more white people to challenge their belief systems,” she said. “Things won’t be turned around instantly, but I think we’re at the turning point.”

A Muslim rider who has always felt welcome in the horse world wants to encourage more BAME people to try the sport she loves.

Noori Husain, who fits riding and competing her shared horse Joy round her work as a junior doctor in Oxford, told H&H her experience in the horse world has been “overwhelmingly positive”.

She has been the only Asian person at events on many occasions, says she has been told her headscarf would not be allowed as part of show wear, or asked if she is going to take it off, but says she has never felt excluded, and “feels I am part of the equestrian community in my area”.

“Having Joy has been the only thing that’s kept me going at times,” Noori said, adding that the long shifts she has worked as a junior doctor have been hard.

Noori said she has always been interested in horses, and rode as a child in London. Her family then moved to Buckinghamshire and her lessons stopped.

“I think some people were a bit put off; my mum also wears a headscarf,” she said. “I don’t know if people were being racist or unwelcoming, but I ended up not having lessons. Then I went to medical school and started volunteering for a Riding for the Disabled Association group.”

This brought Noori back into the equestrian world and about a year later, a friend told her her aunt was looking for a sharer for Irish cob Joy.

After a couple of years to get back into the swing of riding, she started entering competitions again, including while she was fasting for Ramadan, and on occasion, changing into riding clothes at the hospital and going straight to a show after a night shift.

Noori said riding has helped her unwind after stressful days at work, but she has sometimes felt the odd one out.

“I’m Asian and wear a headscarf,” she said. “I don’t think anyone means anything unkindly but people do stare. I also don’t drink, and can’t eat anything on sale from the vans – and it smells so nice!

“It’s a novelty to see someone who looks like me, and it takes longer for people to think I’m serious about things. People are really nice, but there are comments, like ‘are you sure you’re allowed to wear that?’ about the headscarf. I’m not offended but it would be good for people to realise it’s not a sport for just one type of person.”

Noori said her family supports her riding — her mother has also ridden Joy — but she believes there is some associated stigma from some Asians.

“It’s seen as quite an out-there thing to do,” she said. “You’re seen as very visible doing it, and a lot of young Muslim girls aren’t that into different types of sport.

“I think Khadijah Mellah [who won the Magnolia Cup at Goodwood last year] is amazing and I’m so pleased to see another rider who wears a headscarf. It’s great there are different role models for young people — but Asian girls and other ethnic minorities shouldn’t feel put off if there aren’t many in their field.”

Noori said it never occurred to her that she could not ride, despite the lack of BAME riders in general, but said she then felt extra pressure when she first competed, as she was the only non-white person present.

“I felt like if I did something stupid, people might think all Asian people ride like this,” she said. “Thankfully that hasn’t happened but I try to make it that it’s just me. I’m just a person doing what she loves – the more it’s made a big deal, the more it is one.

“But it’s not only people in the equestrian world who need to change their mindset; BAME people need to encourage their children to explore different things, and know what’s out there.

“Being part of the equestrian world is so much fun, and there’s so much people can do, it’s a shame if people feel it’s a world they can’t get into.”

We can all do our bit to help combat inequality and lack of diversity in equestrianism, the mother of a mixed-heritage rider believes.

Trinity Allman, a 13-year-old showjumper and eventer, appears in pictures taken by Jade Greenfield, of Mountain Photography, which mum Kerrie Rycroft hopes will help promote and celebrate racial diversity in our industry.

Kerrie told H&H the pictures have been widely shared online, with positive feedback and supportive comments.

And although she said Trinity has not experienced negativity related to her ethnic background in the horse world, she is often the only non-white rider present – and the family has been the victim of direct racist abuse in other places.

“I wrote a post on social media about some of my kids’ experiences, and it’s been shared thousands of times,” she said. “People have said they had no idea what it was like but until you’ve been the only person who looks like you in a school, or at Pony Club, or at a show, it doesn’t occur to you.”

For a report into the barriers to ethnic diversity in equestrianism H&H spoke to Imran Atcha, St James City Farm Riding School in Gloucester, who said he has been approached when riding by people who have said they did not think Black or Asian people could ride horses, and a key to increasing diversity is to change that mindset.

Jade, a close friend of Kerrie’s, agrees, telling H&H she is not only planning more photoshoots with Trinity, she has also contacted a number of brands to ask them to use more diverse models in their imagery.

“When I saw Kerrie’s post about racism, I looked into it more, and thought ‘how can I help?’” she said.

“I’m no good with words, but maybe my pictures can say something instead.”

Jade used her own horse, Siangie Ruby Mountain, for the pictures, and gave Trinity a white dress to wear, in a woodland setting. She has since set up another shoot, with her rescue pony Mountain of Fire.

“It looks like something from a fairy tale,” she said. “I’ve trained a lot of people, and been to a lot of shows and taken a lot of pictures, but none of them have been Black people before.

“This has really opened my eyes. I’ve had one company come back to me to say they’re looking into their marketing and their image library and I’m going to contact more, and do more shoots with Trinity, to really try to help get this out there.”

Kerrie added: “I think there’s a willingness for people to accept that just because something’s always been one way, that doesn’t mean it’s the right way to do it.

“I think this will be a slow burn, not a quick fix, but it’s nice to see people are making an effort, and we can all do our bit. I’m very vocal about it because I’m a mum, and I have no intention of stopping.”

Equestrian governing bodies are among those pledging their commitment to tackling inequality, as the sporting sector admits “we have not done enough”.

The Sport and Recreation Alliance this week has stated: “It is time to confront racism and inequality that exists across sport, from grassroots participation through to the boardroom.”

The pledge is signed by bodies from the Rugby Football League to the Lawn Tennis Association, including British Dressage, British Eventing, British Showjumping, the British Horse Society and the Association of British Riding Schools.

“The appalling death of George Floyd, the global protests that have followed and the powerful message of the Black Lives Matter movement has made every section of society take notice and confront an ugly truth,” it reads.

“Sport and recreation has an influential role to bring about meaningful change and this period has rightly led the sector to reflect, listen, question, learn and openly discuss how to take positive action.

“It is time to confront racism and inequality that exists across sport, from grassroots participation through to the boardroom.”

Research carried out by the Sport and Recreation Alliance in 2018 found four in 10 BAME participants have endured a negative experience in sport or physical activity settings, more than double that of white participants.

A report published by Sport England in January, found people from Asian, Black and Chinese backgrounds are more likely to be physically inactive than those who are white.

People from these ethnic groups are also far less likely to volunteer in sport and enjoy the associated benefits.

A 2018/19 report into diversity in sport governance found is only 5% BAME board representation across Sport England and UK Sport-funded organisations.

“Constructive work has already been started to address a number of these problems including a committed effort to increase boardroom diversity, additional funding to tackle inequality and an array of inspiring inclusiveness projects from across the sport and recreation sector,” the pledge states. “This can only be seen as the start.

“Systemic change must be made at all levels so we can become truly reflective of our wonderfully diverse society. We can no longer rely on Black role models at the elite level speaking out, we must join together to become better and to support every member of the sport and recreation community.

“We must become more inclusive. We must create opportunities that are truly accessible. We must do more.”

The pledge states that a “significant” increase in resources and funding is needed to achieve this.

“There is no easy solution and change will require a consolidated approach both from within and outside of our sector,” the pledge reads. “It is time to face awkward questions, to become involved in uncomfortable conversations and to hold ourselves to account.”

Increasing diversity in UK equestrian sport: useful links

Following on from H&H’s news report on removing barriers to diversity in the UK equestrian world, here is a selection of accounts, groups and organisations you may be interested in, including those quoted in the article, so you can find out more about them. This article is by no means exhaustive and we welcome suggestions of other useful links we can add to this page.

H&H’s editor-in-chief Sarah Jenkins believes the equestrian world should be for everyone and she discusses this further in both 11 June H&H Plus newsletter and her column in this Thursday’s magazine (18 June). As she says, now is the time to actively educate ourselves, remove barriers and ensure everyone feels welcome to enjoy the wonderful relationship that goes with riding and caring for horses.

Sarah says: “I’ve always been proud that in our sports, women and men compete on equal terms. Though there is still some gender inequality, in that respect we are leagues ahead of some other disciplines. But when it comes to diversity, BAME riders do not feature proportionally to the UK population in our many events across multiple disciplines. That is something the horse world needs to acknowledge and address – as indeed it is in small pockets.

“It should go without saying that we support equality, we despise racism, and we must call it out. But to say so sounds hypocritical, empty even, when you look at the reality of the UK equestrian demographic. Now is the time for every one of us to actively educate ourselves about unconscious bias and acknowledge that one major factor preventing many BAME people from enjoying the benefits of a relationship with horses is that they simply do not feel welcome. Which is a terrible situation. We need to create an environment where everyone feels welcome, by demonstrating to all the kindness, encouragement and willingness to share knowledge that there is in our community.

“I’ve previously mentioned how fortunate many of us are feeling to have our horses, our countryside, space and subsequent freedom – these privileges should be available to everyone who is interested in them. Nobody should feel the horse world isn’t for them. Everyone should be able to experience the physical and emotional benefits of a life with horses, be that for work or pleasure. We need to accelerate that work and we all have our part to play in supporting it in whatever way we can.”

As a spotlight is thrown on the lack of ethnic diversity in the British equestrian industry, H&H investigates what action is being taken to address the issue...

“I’ve had people stop me to say: ‘I didn’t think Black or Asian people rode horses’. It’s about changing that mindset.”

Imran Atcha, who runs St James City Farm Riding School in Gloucester, told H&H he has often been approached, when riding, by people who had never thought they could sit on a horse – and want to try.

He believes this lack of awareness is a major factor in the lack of ethnic diversity in British equestrianism – which he and others are working to change, to improve accessibility to our sport for all.

“We need role models,” Imran said. “We need someone who people in the area can relate to. If they see someone from the same background, they can relate to that person, but if everyone appears to be the same type, and wealthy, there’s a feeling riding is only for wealthy people – and for the ethnic minority community, it’s multiplied. When they see someone like me, that I can ride and am willing to help others into the sport, and there are other people like me, it’s easier.”

Imran believes change has to come from the grassroots level; the top riders of the future have to start at the bottom, but these potential equestrians have to be inspired, to know it is possible for them, to take the sport up in the first place.

He cites Peckham teenager Khadijah Mellah’s 2019 victory in the Magnolia Cup – the first time a British Muslim had ridden a winner in the UK, and the first time anyone had raced in a hijab – as an inspiration.

“People from minority communities, second or third generation, might not have heard of Carl Hester or AP McCoy, but they’ve heard of her,” he said. “That’s the first step.”

Khadijah learned to ride at Ebony Horse Club in Brixton, another city riding school aiming to make horses accessible to those who may not otherwise have had the opportunity.

Like Imran, Ebony’s co-founder Naomi Howgate is involved with a new British Equestrian (BEF) initiative set up last autumn, the equality engagement group, which the BEF hopes will help it engage with people already working in the area to “help us provide equal opportunities for all to take part in equestrian sport, and to make what we do more accessible”.

Imran said Khadijah’s story shows the importance of schools like Ebony, but that many such organisations are in a “vacuum”. BEF head of participation Anna Hall told H&H the equality group wants to help connect and support these organisations in their work.

“We have challenges, but the way we’re approaching them is through these groups – to link people who can drive action,” she said. “We don’t want the BEF to plan a misguided project; there’s nothing worse than a bunch of well-meaning people saying, ‘This is what we think you want’; the idea is to support people. It might take more time, but it’ll deliver a better result.”

The first group meeting was held last autumn, to find out about the barriers to accessing the sport. The next session, planned to start addressing the issues, was due to be held this spring, but was delayed by the coronavirus.

Anna said the barriers cited were much as expected – cost is a major factor in accessing riding, perception of elitism – but geography is also a major barrier. Rural areas, in which horses are most often found, are also generally those with the lowest proportions of BAME residents.

“We know that if riding schools go into urban areas, people are interested, and want to be involved,” she said. “The love of horses goes across all races.”

Dressage Olympian Emile Faurie set up the Emile Faurie Foundation 14 years ago to help children access riding who may not otherwise have been able to.

“One of the first programmes we did was in Birmingham; we took a couple of horses to a location and the children came out to see them,” he told H&H.

“There was a Black girl who stayed at the back, and when we encouraged her to come forward, she said, ‘I can’t’. I asked why not and she said, ‘Black people don’t ride’. That really struck a chord.”

Emile’s foundation sponsored a young Black rider to complete a college degree in equine studies, and he believes, and hopes, diversity in equestrianism is moving in the right direction.

“It boils down to money,” he said. “If we can get more funding, we can help more kids ride.

“We require school attendance from children [who take part], and we’ve had so many letters from schools about the incredible difference it’s made to children when they get the opportunity to ride, on attendance and concentration. Especially children from minority groups; it integrates them so much more and gives them more confidence.”

Lydia Heywood, a 23-year-old event rider who grew up in Britain and rides for Jamaica, currently at two-star level, said she “puts a lot of thought into ideas that could make a difference”.

“Thankfully my mum has given everything to get me where I am, but funds to build a competitive string and train towards the Olympics need establishing now,” she told H&H.

Lydia works with Ebony, giving her time free of charge as much as possible, and is keen to be involved with the BEF work. She created her Cool Ridings project, which will aid her aims to grow a bursary scheme for young riders.

“There’s a link missing between the foundations and competitive riding; there’s not enough diversity on the circuit,” she said.

“I make trips to Ebony and have trained groups in Jamaica; there’s a lot of natural ability and passion – I’d like to inspire other people into the sport.”

Lydia, who said “children can’t be what they don’t see”, wants to “reveal the avenues of hope in the equestrian world” and has been working with St James.

“Since Pony Club days, I felt people double-take seeing me on a horse, but it never upset me,” she added. “I’d like to think it’s a positive thing, and let my riding and smiling do the talking.”

Lydia’s grandparents are from Jamaica and she believes we will see more diversity at the elite level of the sport in the next generation; “But I’d love to see more help for people now,” she said.

Another figure working with the BEF is Reece McCook, a mixed-heritage rider who has launched the Ride out Racism campaign.

The 18-year-old told H&H he has wanted to be an eventer since childhood, so completed a college course and then went to work on a yard – but left after he was racially abused.

“I wanted to give up riding as I felt I wasn’t the right stereotype,” he said. “After a lot of encouragement, I picked myself up, and had the idea to start the campaign to try to defeat the barriers I and other ethnic minorities face. Racism is still there in our sport.”

Support for others

Reece said he wants riders to know they are not alone, and that there is support and people to talk to, for others in his situation.

“It had never been as direct as that one incident, but growing up, and say, going to tack shops, I always felt I stuck out like a sore thumb,” he said. “Even at college, people would ask if I was sure this was what I wanted to do, or if I’d ridden before; [racism] was implicit in what was said.

“There are so many barriers that need to be broken down, and with all the Black Lives Matter coverage, I thought it the perfect time to see what I can do to open doors for people.

“So many people have come forward to tell their stories; it’s empowering to know you’re not alone. Horses bring so much good; everyone should have the chance to get involved, whatever their heritage or background.”

Reece hopes to promote cohesion and raise awareness of issues, including helping to dispel the stereotype of a typical rider. He feels social media can play a big part, and also hopes to encourage equestrian brands to feature riders from underrepresented ethnic backgrounds in their imagery.

“It looks like the industry is willing to listen, and open to change, which is good,” he said.

Dannie Morgan, an advanced eventer and grand prix dressage rider, has had a more positive experience than some. He told H&H he has never experienced any discrimination, or felt different to others in his sport, praising the governing bodies for their support of his career.

Imran added: “There’s much more to be done. We need more capacity; people with the passion to act may not have the paperwork skills, and need to be hand-held. I’d like to see organisations like ours elsewhere, offering affordable riding to everyone.

“But I’m an optimistic person. With the BEF approach, that can filter down through the disciplines and they can lead the way. That gives me hope.”

‘A big part of my life has been proving people wrong’: history-making teenager in TV documentary this weekend

A documentary charting the story the Peckham teenager Khadijah Mellah, who made history at this summer’s Glorious Goodwood, will air on ITV this weekend.

Khadijah, 18, stormed into the history books when she won the Magnolia Cup at the Sussex racecourse on 1 August.

She first sat on a racehorse just four months previously and the Magnolia Cup marked the first time a person had raced in a hijab on a British racecourse, with her victory making her the first British Muslim woman to ride a winner on UK soil.

Riding A Dream, produced by UnVeil Arts, will be shown on ITV at 12.15pm on Saturday (2 November) — directly after the Rugby World Cup final.

“A big part of my life has been proving people wrong,” said Khadijah, who won the charity race aboard the Charlie Fellows-trained Haverland.

“I am thrilled that I am part of a shift in social understanding of what women can achieve and what they can be good at. There’s quite a stereotype around Muslim girls and them ‘not being able to follow their sporting dreams’. I want to be a role model to anyone who wants to do something that they wouldn’t initially believe was in their comfort zone and allow people to follow their aspirations and dreams.”

The documentary follows Khadijah’s journey from Ebony Horse Club in Brixton, where she learnt to ride, through the challenges she faced while preparing for the race — including fasting during Ramadan, preparing for her A-levels and making the jump from riding in a school to galloping racehorses.

“Growing up in Peckham with no real connection to horses before she started riding at Ebony Horse Club, Khadijah’s fairytale story broke down barriers and stereotypes and proved that there are no limits to what you can achieve when you put your mind to it,” states the synopsis from ITV.

“Hers is a story that not only impressed a nation but also inspired the world.”

Teenager Khadijah Mellah made history with her winning ride in the Magnolia Cup at the Qatar Goodwood Festival today (1 August) as the first woman to race in a hijab in Britain.

Khadijah gave the Charlie Fellowes-trained Haverland a well-judged ride, pipping Land Filly and BBC presenter Alexis Green into second by three-quarters of a length. In third was Clewbrious Company, ridden by Rachael Gowland.

The 18-year-old from Peckham, south London, sat on a racehorse for the first time in April and started riding out for Charlie just six weeks ago.

Her introduction to riding came through Brixton-based charity, Ebony Horse Club.

“There are no words to describe this — I’m lost for words,” said the A-level student.

“I’m still trying to figure out how it all happened, and I’m so grateful to everyone who has come along to support. I’m so happy that Haverland is well — I’ve been riding him a lot at Charlie’s and I love him so much.”

Khadijah, who has revealed she would like to apply for her amateur licence, added horses bring her “immeasurable amounts of happiness”.

“I’ve always loved them and always will and I hope to carry on and keep riding,” she said.

“Ambitious women can make it — that’s all I want to represent. Be ambitious and do it. I’ve had so much support, and I can’t wait to see other stories about women who achieve something.”

She said while she wanted to win, she never expected to.

“At the start it was dead silent, and I wanted people [other riders] to start talking. I thought ‘Oh my god, would someone smile, please’. I didn’t really know what I was doing. It was crazy,” she said.

“When we set off there were three horses in front of me and the kickback was flying in my face and I decided to pull out and see what happens. When I passed the post I couldn’t believe it, and then I saw all my family and friends and started crying.”

Khadijah thanked her instructor, Naomi, and all those who have helped her in her journey.

“Initially, riding out at Charlie Fellowes’ yard was quite difficult because it was such a new experience, but Charlie, and Chris Wall and all the trainers I’ve ridden out with have been amazing in helping me,” she said.

“I didn’t really know how to ride, and Charlie has been so amazing, I can’t thank him enough.”

Charlie added that Khadijah gave the horse “the most unbelievable ride”.

“She was so cool — she followed the right horse through and she did absolutely brilliantly,” said the Newmarket-based trainer.

“I’m speechless, shaking, I can’t believe it. She is the most incredible young lady you will ever come across. How she has done that is beyond remarkable.

“Every single time we have asked Khadijah to come forward she has done so, emphatically. She is the most wonderful young lady I have ever had anything to do with — she has a smile that lights up our yard. She has taken this so incredibly well.

“I thought she might finish in the first four, but she has ridden an absolute peach of a race. She was in the perfect position, won nicely and a shade cosily — I hope the handicapper wasn’t watching!”

The partnership came about via Oli Bell, Khadijah’s mentor for the Magnolia Cup, who called Charlie to ask if he had a suitable horse — which he did.

“[Haverland] is a gentleman and very safe, and I knew he would look after her — also the conditions of the race suit him,” said Charlie.

“The two of them have become the most fantastic partnership, but never did I think they could win the race.

“Khadijah is so brave and the process never fazed her one bit. We’ve taken baby steps, but until last week she had never galloped or gone at this pace.

“We took her to the Rowley Mile for a piece of work, Hayley [Turner] rode with her, and I said to Oli, ‘If she nails this then we are okay’. She absolutely nailed it and I came away with a smile on my face.

“Females in racing have always had a good position but Muslim females? There’s not many of them [in the industry]. It’s wonderful and it shows actually what an inclusive sport this is because I think it has a reputation for not being inclusive. It’s not, it is open to everyone and we welcome everyone with open arms, especially young ladies like that.”

From Brixton to Goodwood: inner-city teenager has her sights set on racecourse debut

One young rider from Brixton’s Ebony Horse Club will be donning silks and breeches for the first time in this year’s Magnolia Cup on 1 August, during the Qatar Goodwood Festival.

Khadijah Mellah is currently combining studying for her A-levels this summer with a gruelling fitness regime, in preparation for her transition from riding club ponies to thoroughbreds on raceday at the West Sussex track.

The 18-year-old, who hopes to study engineering at university in September, has been a member of the Ebony Horse Club for five years. Having learnt to ride at the London riding school — which offers inner-city children the opportunity to develop and work alongside horses — Khadijah went on to ride out for racehorse trainers Chris Wall in Newmarket and Simon Dow in Epsom. The teenager visited a racecourse for the first time when attending Newmarket’s Craven Meeting in April.

“I am super-duper excited about riding in the Magnolia Cup,” she said. “It was a great experience riding at Chris and Simon’s yards, and seeing how different racehorses are.

“It was my first time on a racecourse at Newmarket last month so it was good to get my head around what a raceday is like and what it’ll be like on the day. It’s going to be a busy few months with my A-levels as well but I can’t wait to get going.”

She will be joining 11 other riders at the start line in the famous charity race, including model Vogue Williams and former Olympic cyclist Victoria Pendleton.

A short film, funded by Great British Racing, Goodwood Racecourse and The Racing Foundation, will document Khadijah’s journey from Brixton to Goodwood.

ITV Racing presenter Oli Bell, who is a patron of Ebony Horse Club, added: “I am incredibly excited about the documentary and its potential to shine a light on Ebony’s brilliant work, plus the ways in which it is opening up opportunities for its members in racing — the sport that I love.

Children from tough city backgrounds take to the Ascot turf during pony racing initiative

Young jockeys and their mini mounts took to the hallowed Ascot Racecourse turf on Monday, 8 April, during a pony-racing day organised by the Lord Leconfield branch of the Pony Club.

For many of the youngsters, racing is in their blood and they have become established jockeys in the racing saddle at a young age, but for five children on Monday, the day’s experience was a far cry from their home-life in the City.

The children from Ebony Horse Club in Brixton, London, have been trained up by coach Natalie O’Rourke at her Park Lane Stables in Teddington over a period of six months — enjoying two training sessions a month culminating in the Ascot raceday.

“I did a total of 12 sessions with the children, who are all from disadvantaged backgrounds without their own ponies to ride,” said Natalie. “They were all so committed to the training and I gave them fitness targets to work on at home, including some running and squat exercises.”

The training started in the sand school at Park Lane Stables on the riding school’s ponies, building the children’s balance and confidence, before they headed out on hacks in the parkland surrounding the yard.

During the final countdown to the raceday at Ascot, Natalie took the children and ponies to the point-to-point yard of Phil York in Effingham, Surrey, to use his gallops on Sundays.

“This helped the children become more competent going fast on the ponies and, although there were some tumbles along the way, all the children did brilliantly,” Natalie added.

“They had all had lessons at Ebony previously, but had never ridden at the standard of their fellow competitors at Ascot. My role as their coach was to build their confidence and teach them vital racing skills such as bridging their reins — they all worked so hard and I am very proud of them.

“All of their mounts were riding-school ponies from Park Lane Stables, which shows how versatile ponies can be.”

The icing on the cake came in the maiden 148cm race, when one of Natalie’s students, 12-year-old O’Shane Marsh (pictured, below), won on his debut aboard “the best all-rounder you could ever meet”, Dougie.

“All the children did so well on the day, but to get a winner was a fairytale,” added Natalie, who has been involved in the Pony Racing Authority (PRA) initiative for three years. “O’Shane was really chuffed with his achievement and his family was there to watch him, they were over the moon too. I think the cheer he received was louder than the one for Tiger Roll at Aintree on Saturday!

“The goal now for O’Shane is to pursue his dream of being a jockey and he will head to the British Racing School when he is old enough.”

Natalie’s Park Lane Stables works collaboratively with Ebony Horse Club in an initiative funded by the PRA. Following the raceday at Ascot, there is a graduate scheme put in place by the PRA, which is designed to help young jockeys climb the ladder and progress onto faster ponies.

“The initiative is a great way for children, who have grown up in difficult circumstances and don’t have a pony, to channel their energy in a positive way,” she added. “For many who struggle at school, it is also a path into a career within the racing industry.

“It is brilliant to be involved in the scheme, after all everyone has to start somewhere. I will now start training another five children for a pony-racing day at Lingfield in October.”

The selection process for the young Ebony jockeys includes them writing a letter to the PRA explaining their wish to be on the pony-racing scheme.

“It is such a great opportunity for these children,” concluded Natalie. “Seeing them gallop past the finishing post at Ascot is always very special.”

‘As soon as that bell rings, I’m on my way here’: how a charity brightens lives through horses

A short film highlighting the impact a riding school is having on the lives of inner city children has gone viral online.

Ebony Horse Club is based in Coldharbour, south London, which is one of the most deprived areas in the country.

More than 120 young people visit the centre each week and more than 1,000 children have learnt to ride there.

Among these is 12-year-old Omari, who stars in the clip by ITV.

“Coming here has calmed me down in school, stopped me from coming to trouble, because I know as soon as that bell rings, I’m on my way here” said Omari.

“Coming here has helped me mentally and physically. It’s calmed me down and taught me a lot — and it’s helped me outside school and outside Ebony.

“The horses themselves have taught us a lot. They’ve taught us to be caring, kind, calm, and to be ourselves around horses.

“Before I came to horse club I had never, ever interacted with a horse, I had only seen pictures or seen one from a far distance.

“No matter how poor you are, or how rich you are, it doesn’t stop you from loving horses.”

The clip has been viewed more than a million times on Facebook and the surge in public interest temporarily crashed the charity’s website.

Naomi Howgate, Ebony Horse Club’s business and funding manager, told H&H: “We’re very proud of Omari and all our star riders and we’re delighted that the video has touched so many people.

“As a small charity we are always striving to help more young people like Omari and we are grateful for any ongoing support to do this.”

In 2015, the Pony Racing Authority teamed up with the charity and Appletree Stud to teach members of the club how to race-ride.

Just under two years later, two riders from the club made their pony racing debut at Ascot.

Members have also learnt how to play polo and played in front of crowds in a charity match at Ham Polo Club in September.

Brixton teenagers take to the polo field

Young riders from an inner-city riding school have made their polo debut.

The team, from Ebony Horse Club in Brixton, have been practising over the summer and played in front of crowds at Ham Polo Club on 23 September.

The youngsters were pitted against staff and volunteers from the charity, who were also polo novices, in a match to raise funds for the riding club.

ITV broadcaster and Ebony Horse Club patron Ronke Phillips threw in the first ball and after two chukkas, a 2-1 victory was claimed by the staff and volunteers’ team.

Pint-sized Shetland Pedro, who became an internet sensation after a specially-designed periscope was made for his stable, also attended as mascot.

“Polo is a team sport, which is different to other riding we’ve done, like dressage,” said 16-year-old Khadijah.

“You’re working together and there’s one aim – to score goals!”

Her teammate Grace added she would “love to do it again”.

“Where I live people don’t really know about horses, let alone polo, so it was amazing to be able to play,” she said.

Later that afternoon, Vendetta, captained by Garrie Renucci, took on Natascha Hedegaard’s University of London team, winning 5-4.

Ebony Horse Club chair of trustees Sue Collins said 2017 marks the charity’s 21st year.

“It was the perfect time to launch this new fundraising event, and we hope to make this a regular summer fixture,” she added.

“It’s been a thoroughly enjoyable day for spectators and players alike and every penny we raised today helps young people to build better futures.”

The charity is based in Coldharbour, south London, which is one of the most deprived areas in the country.

In 2011, the Duchess of Cornwall officially opened the charity’s community riding centre. Before this, children were taken by minibus to riding schools around London.

Since the riding centre opened, more than 1,000 children have learnt to ride in Brixton.

The charity has also teamed up with Appletree Stud and the Pony Racing Authority in recent years to give its members the chance to try pony racing.

“Aside from learning about dressage and falling in love with the sport, it’s all about improving the confidence of these young people,” said BD project delivery lead Emma Bayliss, who has been instrumental in delivering the scheme.

“The programme gives them the opportunity to learn from our coach, interact with each other and develop valuable life skills that they will be able to take forward into the wider world.”

“Summerfield Stables is a community riding school in the heart of Birmingham, offering an inclusive environment that provides access to horse riding for young people, as well as volunteering opportunities for those keen to learn and care for horses,” she said.

The initial selection involved people who already ride at Summerfield. A second cohort will follow there, followed by programmes in London and the north-east.

“The programme has given our students a wonderful opportunity to experience these great facilities and give themselves a chance to shine, showing that they are as good as any other rider. Often, it’s assumed that riding school pupils can’t ride to a good enough level.

“We have a variety of lovely horses and Jo Swain has commented that our riders already work to a high standard – it’s great to have that affirmed, so they can move forward with more self-belief.”

The 10 riders will also be able to complete the first two levels of the BD horse-care programme.

“Awareness of equine welfare is a central tenet, and educating these new students at the very start of their dressage journey will be a major part of the development activities,” the BD spokesperson said.

Phoebe, one of the students who volunteers as well as rides at Summerfield, said horses have had a positive influence on her.

“Horses mean a lot to me – if I’ve had a bad day, I can come to the stables, they reset me and allow me to be OK,” she said.

“I want to give it my best shot,” she said. “But even getting to where I am shows that you don’t have to be white or middle-class; you can be any level and of any race, we’re all here to enjoy horses and the sport.”

Tegan comes from a non-horsey family, but started riding aged four as it was recommended by her physiotherapist. She started with the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) and went on to become a four-time RDA champion.

She added that there are small issues that could be addressed to remove some barriers, such as competition uniform. It is hard to wear Afro hair in a bun and with a riding helmet, or to wear a stock with a headscarf.

“If you know people in the sport are thinking things like that, it affects you; if you make a mistake or fall off, you might be more self-conscious, so you don’t put yourself out there. It’s not a level playing field.”

Ms Urwin said this was one aim of a new partnership with Solihull Riding Club, which allows Summerfield riders the chance to take the next step, in a welcoming environment.

“I think this highlights why our project is so important, as there are extra barriers,” she said. “We want to give people a leg up and we need to make sure that if there is one negative comment on social media, there are 20 positive ones to outweigh it.”

Ms Urwin said that during Ramadan, when people fast from sunrise to sunset, some members of Summerfield break their fast together as a community. They also sing carols at Christmas and do trick-or-treating at Halloween.

“We’re trying to bring the community together and have understanding of everyone’s traditions and beliefs,” she said.

“We need to act; our sport is seen as elitist and when negative things happen, it confirms that belief.”

Fabian started creating videos featuring Apple and attracted a following on social media, which he hopes will show others that they can do what he does.

Fabian is also friends with James Argent, who for eight years was a regular on The Only Way is Essex, and has since lost 13 stone; the pair boxed together, and then Fabian invited James to the yard.

“Then James asked to go again, he loved it,” Jordan said. “He said it was great, but his legs were in agony!”

Fabian’s ambitions include representing his country at the Olympics and becoming a five-time gold medallist.

“Believe in yourself and chase your dreams as no one else will be able to chase them for you,” he said. “I want to be the example; I want to be the person that paves the way for other people who thought they couldn’t.”

First to present was Jane Cooper, managing director of Access & Inclusion UK, whose daughter Megan was born with a rare chromosomal condition.

“That was a real life-changing moment,” she said. “I realised then the extra challenges people face, which I wasn’t aware of. That’s why I do what I do.

Ms Cooper advised looking at barriers to accessibility and then considering how to take them down, for example having written information for people with hearing impairment and audio equivalents for those with visual impairment.

“You can do things that mean everyone who wants to can have this experience,” she said.

Ms Mehran Pour said one key point from the BEF’s work is that representation and visual diversity matter to the research participants: “They wanted to see people who looked like them, so we really need role models”.

“Diversity isn’t just the colour of your skin,” she said. “We need to ask questions and better understand the people we communicate with, putting inclusion at the heart of all we do.”

“Because many times, that unique bond has made a massive difference to people’s lives,” she said. “The bond between people and horses is like no other.”

Ms Cogswell said understanding current and potential audiences is key. She cited BHS research that found that equestrianism is perceived as elitist, and that many saw it as a community to which they could not belong.

The diversity and inclusion strategy is the “culmination of an extensive research, listening and learning process, [which] sets the agenda for our long-term commitment to lead change in our industry and foster a culture and environment of everyday inclusion and equity”.

H&H has reported on the BEF’s project to address the barriers to participation, focusing on ethnic minorities and those from a low socio-economic background, the results of research in this area, and the plan to create the strategy that has now been published.

Its key strategies cover leadership and governance, data and diversity indicators, the workforce, collaborative working, education and accountability.

The BEF has started work on a diversity and inclusion action plan to action the strategy’s objective, and will work with member bodies on their plans.

“The BEF team is looking forward to formulating and delivering an action plan, and supporting our member bodies to do the same, which puts us on a path to the vibrant future we collaboratively want to achieve.”

Six months on, the BEF released an update stating that it has made progress with commitments it made in response to the report.

The main action was to create an equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) strategy; an outline of this is under review and it is to be published this year, to act as a blueprint for BEF member bodies or a basis for their own EDI strategies.

The BEF has been working on a diversity and inclusion action plan, which it expects to implement early next year, and is revising its member rulebook to “incorporate elements of #HorsesForAll’s recommendations around conduct and behaviours, alongside other integrity matters”.

“The progress by the teams in a relatively short space of time is certainly testament to our collective commitment to tackling inequalities in our industry,” said BEF CEO Jim Eyre.

“I explained to them that the images they had of people of colour with horses were very casual and riding school,” she said. “What I loved about them was that when I said you don’t often see people of colour in competition wear, they took shots of me like that.”

Ashleigh said such imagery is important, as if young people do not see other people of colour competing, as well as riding, they may not realise this is something they can aspire to.

She has also completed a placement at Racing TV through the Racing Media Academy, and has presented at Goodwood, although she said she would rather have the chance to present behind-the-scenes documentaries on the equestrian world, to appeal to the public as well as insiders.

Ashleigh said change will not happen overnight, but things are moving in the right direction.

“Five people will become 10, and then 20,” she said. “But if numbers go up slowly, it’s more likely to be sustainable. I take time off work to do things and fund them myself but that’s my purpose and I’m happy to do it as it’s making a difference. Slow and steady wins the race.”

“Everything is ramping up and it’s all good,” she said. “Things are starting to happen and we’re getting fantastic feedback from different sectors.”

Sandra said BERF hosted a training weekend this summer; sisters Shanice and Sheneka Reid from Ebony Horse Club in Brixton spent time with her, riding her stallion Monet for training with a British Eventing accredited coach, and competing at a showjumping competition where both riders were placed.

“The girls rode Monet beautifully and it was so good,” she said. “It showed what they could do with a level playing field; a competition horse and good training and access to competition was all it took. Sheneka burst into tears when she found out she’d won; we all cried like babies.”

Sandra said the training and the centre are key to giving riders the opportunities they need.

“As a Black person, coming into the industry can be daunting as there’s no one who looks like you,” she said. “We’re going to bring this forward, we’re going to help.”

AKD Solutions, which carried out the research, made recommendations on how the industry should act, and as a result, the BEF has set out its short-, medium- and long-term commitments.

“Everyone wants this to happen,” BEF head of participation Mandana Mehran Pour told H&H. “The interest is there and that’s the most important part; we all want to do this and we’re going to find out how.”

Headline results included that 46% of respondents would take part in, or consider taking part in, equestrian activity. Some participants felt the industry could learn from the increasing inclusivity of racing, and from the impact of money invested in young Black and Asian talent.

But 24% felt that racial discrimination adversely affected their ability to fully access and benefit from horse-related activities.

“She stands out because she isn’t white,” one Asian equestrian wrote. “We notice the additional criticism we face because we’re not white; we have to work harder, be better.” Incidents of bullying and racialised experiences emerged.

“People may feel racism or bullying every day, and everywhere,” Ms Mehran Pour said. “We know we have to support our industry to be a bit more welcoming and more inclusive to everyone, regardless of background or the colour of their face.”

AKD’s recommendations include a universal commitment to anti-discriminatory equestrian environments, building strong partnerships with alternative structures and diverse spaces, planning generationally and leading from the front on diversity.

The BEF said the report was “a hugely beneficial base” to understand the current situation, and give clear guidance on progressing its equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) strategy.

The BEF’s commitments are based on the recommendations, and Ms Mehran Pour said: “This is a generational movement.
