Police call for vigilance as horse attacked in its field overnight has to be put down

A horse who suffered “serious and unexplained” injuries in its field overnight had to be put down, police have confirmed, as owners are urged to be vigilant.

Officers from Devon & Cornwall Police are investigating after one of five horses in a field in Cheriton Bishop, Dartmoor, was seriously injured on Monday night (11 August).

PC Lucy Wyatt of the rural affairs team, equine lead for Devon & Cornwall Police, said “We’ve received reports that a horse suffered serious and unexplained injuries during the night on 11 August, and sadly had to be put to sleep.

“While investigations are ongoing, we’re urging horse owners and those with livestock in the area to be extra vigilant”.

None of the other horses in the field was hurt. The cause of the wounds is unconfirmed but it is believed they were caused by a sharp or bladed instrument.

Officers are recommending:

• Checking fields where animals are kept to ensure fences have not been breached and no one else is in the field

• Keeping hedges, fences and gates in good repair: gates should have capping hinges so they cannot be removed easily, cattle grids should be removable and locked out of position when not in use and locking posts should be used to obstruct large openings to yards

• Using CCTV if possible

• Keeping gates padlocked

Find out which county came out on top in our study to find the horsiest county in Britain

In today’s issue of Horse & Hound magazine (21 June 2018), our extensive study has crowned Devon as the horsiest county in Great Britain.

Having analysed data across a number of elements of equestrian life, Olympic eventer Mary King’s county came out on top, with Hampshire taking the runner up spot and Somerset in third place.

Thanks to help from governing bodies and other organisations, statistics were compiled for eventing, showjumping, dressage, showing, racing, pointing, hunting, polo, veterinary care, access to farriers, Pony Clubs, riding clubs, bridleways, livery yards, riding instructors, riding centres and tack shops and feed merchants.

We also took into account where some of the biggest events in the equestrian calendar take place as well as where top riders and equestrian legends of yesteryear live.

“Looking at the stunning images of Olympic legend Mary King exercising Kings Ginger along the south Devon coast and surrounding villages for the cover and feature in this week’s Horse & Hound magazine is enough to make any equestrian enthusiast covet a property in this area,” says H&H’s Editor-in-Chief Sarah Jenkins.

“Well served by hunts, Pony Club branches, equestrian centres and instructors, too, Devon really is rider heaven. No doubt readers will be keen to see how their our own counties are rated, and with such a diverse readership the overall winner will not be of as much interest to some as the county that fared best in their preference discipline, for example.

“There were some surprises for H&H’s journalists compiling the research — who would have guessed Essex would be best served by bridleways, for example? — but the overwhelming feeling we had in creating the article is how fortunate we are to be based in a country with such rich equestrian heritage and provision across the board. We might long to move to Devon, but wherever we are based we are not far from equestrian excellence on our small island.”

With the summer season well under way, one of the first county ‘biggies’ for the showing community to flock to in search of an early Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) ticket and a jolly good day out was Devon.

Held over three days (17 — 19 May), the annual fixture saw some old faces return to reclaim their top spots, while some young jockeys also came to the fore.

Horse put down after suspected attack in field

A horse has died in Devon, after what police suspect to be a deliberate attack.

The 16.3hh bay mare was put down after it was found lying in its field with a serious head injury on Sunday (2 August).

Police believe the 15-year-old thoroughbred had been deliberately attacked, though they are “unable to say for certain” what happened to the animal.

The owners of the horse think the attack happened between 6pm and 8.30pm at the property in Chittlehampton, near Umberleigh in North Devon.

Vets who attended the incident were forced to put the horse down due to the extent of its injuries.

However, Devon and Cornwall police told H&H the cause of injury is “still being determined”.

“One thought is that it has been struck with a blunt instrument like a hammer,” a spokesman told H&H.

The police are now appealing for information, and are urging all horse owners in the area to be on their guard.

“Due to the severity of its injuries the 15-year old thoroughbred had to be put down,” police spokesman Steve Grant told H&H.

“We are asking owners of horses and livestock in the area to remain vigilant and to report anything suspicious.

“If any member of the public has any information relating to this crime, please contact police on 101@Devonandcornwall.pnn.police.uk quoting crime reference CR/054196/15.”

Bicton Arena in Budleigh Salterton has a cross-country course, plus dedicated dressage and showjumping arenas for hire. It also holds regular training clinics with top riders, as does Coxleigh Barton Equestrian Centre in Shirwell.

When can you satisfy your competitive spirit?

Bicton runs showjumping, dressage and horse trials. For those with stamina, the Golden Horseshoe Ride takes place on Exmoor, across the border between Devon and Somerset, although its future is uncertain.

Hunting is also exceptional, with both foxhound packs, such as the Exmoor Foxhounds and the Dulverton Farmers, and staghunting with the Devon & Somerset Staghounds.

What are the property prices like?

Prices depend on location in Devon. As a guideline, Marcus Lucock of Marchand Petit says you’re unlikely to find an equestrian property below £500,000 in the sought-after South Hams.

H&H tracks down where the equestrian world’s biggest names are based — and discovers why you’ll want to head there, too

1. Gloucestershire

Celeb-spotting: Carl Hester, Charlotte Dujardin and Laura Tomlinson fly the flag for dressage, Nick Gauntlett and Zara Phillips for eventing and Nigel Twiston-Davies and Jonjo O’Neill for racing.

In vogue: South Gloucestershire is especially sought after, says Rupert Sturgis of Knight Frank, but the Hartpury area is also fast becoming a serious contender, according to Liz Langford of Fox Grant.

Property prices: Near Stow-on-the-Wold and Moreton-in-Marsh, a good home with five stables and five-10 acres costs £2-3 million, according to Rupert Sweeting of Knight Frank. The Hartpury area is somewhat cheaper.

Competitions and shows: Eventing reigns supreme, with Badminton, Gatcombe and Hartpury International Horse Trials, while polo is at the Cirencester Park and Beaufort Polo Clubs and racing is at Cheltenham.

Where to train: “AM Dressage, the home of Matt Frost and Adam Kemp, attracts riders from all over the UK and Europe,” says Liz. Training is also available at Hartpury College, Talland School of Equitation and Summerhouse, among others.

Where to hack: Gloucestershire offers plenty of good outriding, especially in some estates, such as Cirencester Park, says Rupert Sturgis of Knight Frank.

Hunting matters: 10 packs hunt in the county, including the Vale of the White Horse (VWH), the Berkeley, the Heythrop and the Duke of Beaufort’s.

2. Hampshire

Celeb-spotting: Showjumper Peter Charles and dressage supremo Jennie Loriston-Clarke both live locally.

In vogue: The New Forest is always a favourite for its scenic hacking, as is the Meon Valley, with the countryside near Alton being particularly popular for the Hampshire Hunt (HH).

Property prices: You can expect to pay upwards of £2.5 million for an equestrian property with a large American barn,well-fenced paddocks, and quality outbuildings, according to Philip Blanchard of Jackson-Stops & Staff.

Competitions and shows: Somerley Park International Horse Trials is the top eventing competition, with other events held at Mattingley and Tweseldown Racecourse. In addition, you will find racing at Tweseldown and point-to-pointing at Hackwood Park — plus polo at the New Forest Polo Club. Crofton Manor stages showjumping, dressage and showing competitions.

Where to train: Crofton Manor holds regular showjumping and dressage clinics, GB Equestrian offers dressage clinics and Rogate Equestrian Centre, on the Hampshire to West Sussex border, provides tuition in most disciplines. Tweseldown also offers cross-country schooling.

Where to hack: “Great hacking comes in abundance in Hampshire,” says Philip, with the Meon Valley Trail, Queen Elizabeth Country Park and the vast expanse of the New Forest offering miles of car-free riding.

Hunting matters: Eight packs hunt in Hampshire, including the New Forest Hounds and the HH.

3. Dorset

Celeb-spotting: William Fox-Pitt is the local star.

In vogue: The most sought-after villages among riders include Cattistock, Cerne Abbas and Buckland Newton, plus the area around Beaminster. In the north of the county, Motcombe is popular with recreational riders.

Property prices: A medium-size family house with seven acres and basic outbuildings costs from £780,000, according to Fred Cook of Jackson-Stops & Staff. A large main house, with a small cottage, some stables and up to 10 acres of land commands more than £1 million.

Competitions and shows: There’s a lively local circuit with showjumping and dressage competitions at Kingston Maurward College, the Dorset Showground and Parley Court Equestrian Centre. You’ll find horse trials at Bovington Equestrian and Bricky Farm, and three large shows — Gillingham and Shaftesbury, Melplash, as well as the Dorset County Show.

Where to train: Moreton Stables and South Coast Equestrian both hold regular dressage and showjumping clinics, Bovington Equestrian provides private tuition for experienced and competition riders while Kingston Maurward College offers diplomas in horse care and management.

Where to hack: Miles of bridleways and quiet country lanes criss-cross the county. Among the longer rides are the Wessex Ridgeway, the North Dorset Trailway and the Castleman Trailway.

Hunting matters: Dorset counts eight packs, with the vale country hunts being particularly popular. Rupert Sweeting of Knight Frank picks the Cattistock as one of the top three hunts among all the counties featured in these pages.

4. Sussex

Celeb-spotting: Showjumping’s Shane and Chloe Breen are based at Hickstead. Racehorse trainer Gary Moore is at Lower Beeding and Nick Gifford is at Findon — where Tina Cook also lives.

In vogue: The South Downs and Ashdown Forest are particularly sought after among recreational riders, the area around Hickstead draws showjumping riders, while polo players want to be near Cowdray Park, according to Chris Spofforth of Savills.

Property prices: Chris quotes £1.5-2 million for a good five-bedroom farmhouse, with five-10 acres and decent equestrian facilities, depending on location.

Competitions and shows: From the Derby Meeting to the Royal International Horse Show, Hickstead is at the heart of the equestrian calendar. Other county highlights include the Gold Cup at Cowdray Park Polo Club, Glorious Goodwood at Goodwood racecourse and the South of England Show at Ardingly.

Where to train: Coombelands Equestrian in Pulburough has excellent facilities, according to Katherine Watters of The Buying Solution. Other equestrian centres, such as Chelwood, in Nutley, also offer high-level tuition and clinics.

Where to hack: The South Downs Way and the Downs Link offer a lifetime of scenic riding. Should these not suffice, the Worth Way takes in the beauty of the High Weald, while several coastal areas, including the Witterings and Thanet, offer beach riding. Best of all, says Katherine: “Many local pubs now have tie-ups and head collars ready for impromptu visitors.”

Hunting matters: Six packs hunt across the area, including the Chiddingfold, Leconfield and Cowdray Hunt, the Crawley and Horsham and the East Sussex and Romney Marsh.

5. Devon

Celeb-spotting: This is eventing heartland, with both Mary King and Lucy Wiegersma based in the county.

In vogue: Exmoor and Dartmoor are firm favourites with equestrian buyers, followed by the South Hams.

Property prices: In Honiton, on the county’s eastern fringes, prices for a good home with five stables and five-10 acres are around £1.25-1.5 million, according to Rupert Sweeting. The further west you go, the more value you get for your money.

Competitions and shows: The Golden Horseshoe Ride takes place in Exmoor, straddling the border between Devon and Somerset. The local county show is also “very big”, according to Rupert Sweeting. Other events include horse trials and showjumping at Bicton Arena, plus racing at Exeter and Newton Abbot racecourses.

Where to train: Bicton College runs regular dressage and showjumping clinics, as well as offering an equine studies course, while Southcott Farm in Winkleigh was previously voted by Horse & Hound readers as one of their favourite venues for cross-country schooling.

Where to hack: Exmoor and Dartmoor alone provide seemingly endless opportunities for off-road hacking, but the county also has many trails (such as the Dittisham and the Tarka) and free-riding areas (Cookworthy Moor, Haldon Forest Park and Woodbury Common).

Hunting matters: Hunting is superlative with 18 packs, including the Exmoor Foxhounds and the Dulverton Farmers — and of course there’s the Devon & Somerset Staghounds.

6. Yorkshire

Celeb-spotting: Yorkshire is the cradle of the Whitaker dynasty, with John and William both based near Huddersfield and Ellen and Joe near Barnsley. Team GBR endurance rider Catriona Moon also lives in the area, as do a number of racehorse trainers, including Richard Fahey and Mark Johnston, who are based in Middleham.

In vogue: The pretty countryside between Wetherby, Harrogate and Ilkley is always sought after, although some riders prefer the wilder expanses — and cheaper acres — further north. Another popular area is Malton, just by the Howardian Hills.

Property prices: Yorkshire is huge and prices vary enormously depending on location. Being higher in the York to Wetherby corridor, they go down in West Yorkshire. Near Malton you can expect to spend about £1-1.25 million for a house with about five stables and five-10 acres.

Competitions and shows: Bramham is one of the biggest events in the local calendar, but the Great Yorkshire Show, with its showing and showjumping rings, is equally popular — as is racing at York.

Where to train: The Yorkshire Riding Centre and the Richmond Equestrian Centre both hold clinics, as well as offering private hire of their facilities.

Where to hack: With two National Parks (North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales) and a portion of a third (Peak District), the area is criss-crossed by trails — including the 205-mile-long Pennine Bridleway route linking Derbyshire to Cumbria.

Hunting matters: Hunting in Yorkshire is good, thanks to its 21 varied packs. Knight Frank’s Rupert Sweeting names the Badsworth & Bramham Moor and the Middleton as his favourites.

They say horses are a great leveller and boy is that true. The high from my last blog has certainly been dampened by Royal Windsor and Devon County and I don’t mean the weather.

Nobody should expect anything, but I certainly could not have predicted such disappointing results with what I consider to be beautiful horses and ponies. They say be happy with the ones your taking home and that certainly applies in my case.

I was always taught when judging to think of your championship and that it was your responsibility to ensure it was a spectacle with the best ponies or horses on display. Some championships at Windsor were indeed this, but sadly in my opinion they didn’t all quite get it right.

All young horses have to start in the ring somewhere, as do mine, but to be on a lovely baby horse going correctly makes you feel very proud of the job you. So while the judges may not have shared my view, I was very pleased with my horses on the day.

OK rant over. I would still rather have been at Windsor in the sunshine than not. It was a shame there were so many shows on that same weekend. I do hope they all got enough entries.

It’s always disappointing when shows have to cancel, and the question of where the qualifiers will go always comes up. Hambleton and Devon County have both been very quick to inform competitors where their qualifiers have gone and shows have opened entries up to accommodate.

It won’t be easy to please everyone though. Some qualifiers are now midweek when people are working and therefore unable to go or have moved a long way from their area. Cancelling itself is a tricky one — not whether to, but when.

I’ve heard some very sad and conflicting reports of an accident in the lorry park at Devon County. My thoughts are with anyone who suffered in any way.

Thankfully I had decided not to go to many shows over Bank Holiday weekend or half term so wasn’t caught up in too much stress, although Alice was due to ride 2 show ponies for Cath Hughes-Jones at Devon. She was very disappointed to miss that opportunity.

During the past few weeks we have moved 2 houses and a yard. It has been quite a task! During the move we uncovered many old photos and scrapbooks of Dad. My father is an unbelievable man. I can honestly say they don’t make them like that anymore!

Make 2,400 new friends at the Donkey Sanctuary

The Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth, Devon is inviting visitors to come and celebrate its 27th annual Donkey Week which kicked off yesterday (Tuesday 5 May).

There are 2,400 donkeys waiting to be made a fuss of at the sanctuary’s seven Devon and Dorset farms, which are not normally open to the public, plus the main sanctuary near Sidmouth.

Spokesman Amanda Gordon said: “Admission is free and we welcome anybody who would like to come down, meet the donkeys and learn a bit more about what we do.”

The charity, which was founded in 1969 by Dr Elisabeth Svendson, launched its Sanctuary from Suffering campaign this year to highlight its work in 18 countries around the world including Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Kenya and Mexico.

Ms Gordon added: “In these countries Sanctuary from Suffering comes in the form of free mobile clinics and education for donkey owners, children and veterinary surgeons and students.”

Welcome to Golden Lane Stables. This yard boasts an excellent range of equestrian facilities and is currently run as a livery business.

The property is set in 10.65 acres of land. The majority of the well-drained gently sloping land is to the south east of the yard and is divided into a number of turnout paddocks. There is an access track which runs from the parking area parallel to the lane and continues around the paddocks.

The lower land adjacent to the woodland, is steeper with an area of gorse bank. There are a further three smaller paddocks directly to the south of the main stable block.

There is stabling for 19 horses. The boxes are split between three separate yards. The main stable block is a wooden barn housing 10 boxes, a tack room and an open fronted store.

The second block boasts five stables while the third houses four stables. There is also an additional wooden building with lean-to containing four secure stores.

One of the main features of the property is the 20x60m Olympic outdoor arena with sand and fibre surface.

The rural location and rolling countryside lends itself to lovely hacking and outriding.
